Plan
Do

Everyone loves to flex their creative muscles and for our style team it’s a full-time occupation. A weather shift is the excuse we all need to run a keen eye over our living spaces with “cosy” in mind. And in excellent news, there is no one way to warm up this winter.

The current decorating climate is particularly forgiving, due to a “new-old” direction that encourages the mixing of colour, pattern and pieces from different eras. Our team went country to

bring this to life and the result is a maximalist’s dream, high on charm (page 63).

Those who believe neutral layers are the key to happiness will love the calm and layered, interior and textural depth achieved with new-season rugs (page 15), one of the fastest ways to take a room from cool to cosy. In natural jute and wool plus plusher piles and even washable styles, rugs bring affordable, instant comfort and visual gratification.

So, to maximalists and minimalists and everyone in the middle, relax and have fun! It’s your turn to shine.

Control weeds in the vegie patch, along paths and in garden beds. They can harbour pests and diseases and steal valuable water and nutrients from plants. Build frames around cold or frost-sensitive plants, cover overnight with a frost cloth and remove in the morning. Move pots into warm, protected spots, such as indoors or in a greenhouse.

Prepare planting spots for new deciduous trees and shrubs. Pick a spot with welldrained soil and enrich with plenty of organic matter. Delay planting until mid-winter when trees and shrubs are at their most dormant.

Look out for lawn weeds, especially the fine, fern-like leaves of bindii or jo-jo. Treat at first sight with a weedkiller for lawns.

Reduce watering of indoor plants and move them away from heat sources or cool draughts. If your home is darker in winter, put plants near a window, or use a grow light.

After applying fertiliser around edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, always read the label, follow the instructions carefully and wear suitable protective equipment. Store all garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets.

Bunnings Workshop community member Liesel (@lieselroberts) did just that when she needed a new bookshelf – and this secondhand one was perfect for her project. “I just love the VJ back panel,” she says. After a thorough sand with 120-grit sandpaper, two coats of primer and three coats of leftover house paint, the salvaged bookshelf is now a living room statement piece that’s simple to restyle. “It’s a beautiful feature and so easy to change up and give our space a seasonal refresh,” she says. Nothing brings a room together like a cosy rug, especially when the weather cools down. Aside from the feetwarming appeal, these adaptable floor coverings instantly add a layer of noise and scuff protection while also revamping the look and feel of surrounding decor. But before you roll out the carpet for this season’s neutral shades and natural textures, there are a few rules to remember that will help you answer important size, material and positioning questions.

Bigger is always better

This is true in most cases, as a generous rug helps make any space feel larger. If you can’t find one that’s big enough for the living area, try buying two the same size and lay them side-by-side, or layer up several natural jute and wool styles for a relaxed aesthetic. 

We created this room divider by grouping indoor plants on ladder shelves. It divides an open-plan space and freshens the room and air.

Make sure your rug is large enough to contain the table and the chairs when pulled out; it looks better and the legs won’t catch on the edge

Create a zone

A rug placed under a dining table, coffee table or comfy armchair not only looks fantastic, it helps define different zones within an open-plan area of the home. But when it comes to family meal times, remember to choose one that is easy to care for, as it will no doubt face a beating from dropped foods and spills. A washable polypropylene rug can be hosed off and dried outdoors, and suits a variety of style preferences. Alternatively, a tufted texture under an occasional table or chair gently turns a throughway into a place to pause and relax. Add rug grippers or tape to keep rugs from moving.

Set the tone

Quieter, less utilised rooms such as bedrooms, playrooms or home offices are the ideal places for a plush, shaggy or bouclé wool rug. What could be better than stepping out of bed in the morning into a cushiony cloud? Add complementing pillows and the room is transformed. The bedroom is another location that benefits from layering rug styles to create depth and warmth.

Meanwhile, choosing a deeper pile in a tactile, colourful style is a playful option for a kids’ room that will help to define a calm wind-down area. 

“Bright, soft character rugs set up a comfy zone for hours of imaginative play”

HOW TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT RUG FOR YOU

n When picking the material, think about the final location of the rug and what kind of foot (or food) traffic it will see. You want one that is simple to clean and won’t show up wear and tear as easily.

n Decide on the type of feeling you want to evoke from the decor of the room – the aim is to soften, warm and anchor a space.

n Natural and neutral are the most versatile choices this season.

Fit your st yle

Where you want to locate your rug is imperative to deciding what kind of material it should be and how that fits within the style of your space.

Natural materials, such as jute and hemp, can withstand heavy foot traffic, won’t show marks as easily and look great in circular shapes.

Tufted and shag varieties, often created of wool, cotton or man-made fibres, add a touch of luxury and warmth, but also require regular maintenance for their rewards.

Polypropylene rugs come in a great range of colours and patterns to suit all styles. They’re also easier to wash and more affordable.

Nature was a major inspiration for the colours and textures of the living room. “I wanted to make it feel cosy so I chose a beautiful light tan tone for the walls, Dulux Recycled, paired with Dulux Thurman green on the joinery,” explains Jono. The original floor plan was long and thin, which wasn’t conducive to family-friendly living. “By taking out a rear workshop area and knocking through, we were able to make this room a much grander size.”

LEFT Blocking an unnecessary doorway to the garage freed up an entire wall for elegant media-centre cabinetry. It doesn’t steal all the attention, though. “By having seating facing each other, the room feels conversational,” explains Jono. “This way the focal point of the room isn’t just the TV, but the other people sharing the space with you.”

A large-scale painting makes a statement, but it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. “The artwork cost under $200 and was painted by me!” says Jono, who used leftover sample pots and joint compound filler to give texture. “If you need an oversized artwork, this is the way to go: it’s personal, easy to paint and a lot more affordable than buying original art,” he says.

“This was all about bringing natural light in and taking advantage of the beautiful views,” says Jono, the mastermind behind the window seat. “A few cushions and you instantly have a relaxing reading nook.”

A mix of cupboards and open shelves allows for seasonal updates. “Swap things around, bring some items out of storage and put others away,” says Jono. “You’d be amazed how this can refresh a room.”

KIDS’ ZONE

Colour and curves combine in this fun-filled children’s room

Child’s play

Setting out to prove that a kid’s room can be bursting with cheer without turning gaudy, Jono took a considered approach to the palette. “Pairing the deeper navy with accents of brass and golden tones gave the space a modern, elevated feel.” The walls are

painted in Dulux Pre School, with Kaboodle Kitchen ‘Paint Your Own’ cabinetry and a wave-edged bulkhead (which conceals a projector screen, no less) in Dulux Blue Quarry. The final touch? “I took a big risk!” admits Jono. “It felt like the room was missing one final layer and by putting wallpaper on the ceiling, it draws the eye up, bringing visual interest all the way from the floor to overhead.”

TEEN RETREAT

Pretty pastels and a colourful corkboard transform this space into a teenage dream

Surface appeal

When it came time to design this teenager’s sanctuary, adaptability was a key consideration, and luckily the ‘bones’ of the room were ideal. “During renovations, the fewer walls you move around, the more affordable

it will be. With this room, Jono was happy to leave the layout pretty much as it was,” says builder Tim. Jono chose an on-trend, 1990s-inspired colour scheme. “Accents of soft yellows, purples and greens all help create a bright and vibrant palette, but this is easily a space that can be repainted with a more subtle palette, depending on how tastes change,” he says.

Study in style

Under-bench storage drawers were swapped out for a DIY floating desk under the arch (see opposite), and Jono handcrafted a patterned feature. “Using cork floor tiles, I painted every other tile in the purple tone to give a great checkerboard effect. I glued these to the wall and they now act as a pinboard behind the desk.”

A light touch

The size of this window was reduced to improve privacy in this street-facing room. “It still allows light into the space, and makes the room feel more intimate,” says Jono. Sheer curtains were installed to filter the natural light as well as add extra privacy, with roller blinds providing blockout.

Up the wall

Scalloped panelling painted in Dulux Unbleached Calico Half introduces depth and texture to the design. “With such a small space, adding interest to the walls is a great way to make the most of it, creating little details without encroaching on the floor space,” says Jono. Dulux Cuddle Half from cornice to dado adds pleasing contrast.

1 Decide on the height of the desk, and mark where the underside will sit. Using a spirit level, draw a horizontal line along the walls of the alcove at this mark. Measure side lines, subtract 50mm and cut two pieces of aluminium angle to this length using a hacksaw.

2 Using a stud finder, locate and mark studs along side lines Place a piece of angle along a line with the back end against the wall, leaving a 50mm gap at the front, and transfer the stud marks onto the angle. Repeat at the other side. Tip: Mark which angle is left or right.

3 Predrill both the walls and angle pieces at the stud marks and attach angles to the walls using 50mm screws, to form supports. Measure the desk area and cut benchtop to size using a circular saw. Tip: If the alcove angles aren’t true, make a template first from scrap MDF.

4 Smooth over desk top with 180-grit abrasive paper, wipe off dust with a damp cloth and apply your chosen finish. Drill guide holes through the tops of the angle supports, enlist help to place desk top in position and secure from underneath using 25mm screws.

How to build a hallway organiser

Sort your entranceway with a stylish solution to hold hats, bags, keys and more. Here’s how to make it with a little weekend time and tools from Ryobi

STEP

1: MEASURE AND CUT BACKING BOARD

First, decide how long your organiser should be, depending on your wall space and organisational needs. Grab a piece of timber and your Ryobi 18V ONE+ HP™ brushless circular saw. Measure up, then cut the back piece of the organiser to size.

STEP

2: MAKE CURVED ENDS

Next, using a curved edge, like a bowl, mark out matching curves at each end of the backing board and cut them using the Ryobi 18V ONE+ HP™ brushless jigsaw Tip: Smooth the edges with a Ryobi 18V ONE+ random orbital sander

STEP 3: CUT AND SAND SHELF

Use a square ruler to mark where each arch starts on both ends – the distance between these points is the length of shelf you’ll need to cut. With this measurement, mark another piece of timber and cut in a straight line on each end. Sand it to finish.

STEP 4: ATTACH SHELF

Measure the width of your backing board and divide in two, then draw a line down the centre. Place the shelf over this line and pencil-mark the top and bottom of the shelf on the backing board. Now measure 9mm down from the top line and pre-drill holes through the backing. Apply PVA to the shelf edge and screw it to the backing using 10G 75mm timber screws.

your entryway clear –and avoid lost keys – with this weekend DIY project

STEP 5: MARK HOOK SPACING AND PRE-DRILL

Decide how many dowel hooks you need and the spacing between them. Mark where they’ll go and pre-drill 4mm holes in the backing board. Draw a straight line before you drill to ensure they’re in line.

STEP 6: MEASURE AND CUT DOWELS

To work out the length of the dowels, measure the width of the shelf, then halve it. Cut the dowels to size using a drop saw. Pre-drill, glue and screw the dowels into place on the backing board.

STEP 7: INSTALL METAL HOOKS

Mark where you want the metal hooks to go, again, drawing a line to ensure they’re straight. Leave enough room between each for the items you’ll hang.

STEP 8: PREPARE FRENCH CLEAT

To hang your organiser flush with the wall, you’ll need a French cleat. Take an 85mm x 19mm piece of hardwood and cut a mitre down the middle using the Ryobi 18V ONE+ mitre saw. These two pieces will form the French cleat. Cut them 200mm shorter than your backing board, so they’re neatly tucked away.

STEP 9: SCREW IN FRENCH CLEAT

Screw one piece of the cleat onto the back of the organiser with the mitre facing inwards and down. You’re almost ready to hang it.

STEP 10: HANG IT

Find the studs in your wall using the Ryobi stud finder with AC detection and mark the height for your organiser. Allowing for the distance between the top of the organiser and the bottom of the cleat, draw a line on the wall where the other half of the cleat will go. Use a spirit level to ensure a straight line. Finally, screw the wall cleat into the studs and check the screws aren’t sticking out. Hang the organiser and admire your handiwork.

Upgrade insulation

As Guy Manthel of Knauf Insulation explains, when a home is well insulated, heat is prevented from escaping through the walls, roof and other surfaces. “So less energy is required to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature,” he says (see table, below).

Not sure whether your insulation needs updating? Firstly, consider that older homes may not have any insulation at all! Secondly, look at your energy bills. “Consistently high bills could be a sign that your insulation – if you have it – is no longer performing effectively,” says Guy. “If it is no longer doing its job, your heating and cooling systems will have to work harder to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature, which can drive up your energy bills.” An uneven temperature is another clue – having some rooms significantly cooler than others can signal poorly installed or ineffective insulation.

Updating your insulation may be an achievable DIY job, particularly in the ceiling (see Watch it!, next page).

“When retrofitting ceiling insulation, it’s important to choose a product with a suitable R-value – a measure of insulation’s resistance to heat flow – for the specific location, and ensure it is installed correctly,” advises Guy.

Unless you’re doing an extensive reno, retrofitting wall insulation can be complex. If you have access to the ceiling and underfloor, Guy suggests insulating these first, using the highest R-value possible for the ceiling to help compensate for uninsulated areas.

TYPICAL ENERGY SAVINGS DUE TO INSULATION*

Plug the draughts

No matter how effective your heating system, if your home is riddled with draughts, you might as well be pointing the heater outside. To find the most likely culprits, close all windows and doors, turn off appliances that might create a breeze, then light a candle and – very carefully! –hold it near the window and door frames, running it up and down, watching for a flicker in the flame.

The most common draughts can be simply fixed with a few cheap DIY tools. Using a caulking gun and gap filler, you can quickly fill cracks between the walls and window or door frames, and even between timber floorboards. Adhesive weather seal tape can be applied around window and door frames, where the wind often whistles in. Seal the bottom of exterior doors by installing a door sweep or utilising an old-fashioned door snake.

Treat your windows

Even after sealing any gaps, your windows are still likely to be the greatest heat thief in your home, especially if you don’t have double glazing. However, there is a range of window treatments that can make a big difference. Shutters are really efficient insulators and are also good for light control, but they’re not the most affordable option.

Curtains are a more cost-effective solution. Maddy Porter, of Smart Home Products, says when choosing curtains it’s important to consider the fabric type. “For maximum insulation and protection against cold drafts, we recommend you opt for blockout curtains,” she says. “Blockout fabric is designed to retain warmth and prevent air infiltration, helping to keep your interior spaces cosy and comfortable.” Look for extra width in your curtain rail as well, so the curtains extend beyond the window frame, which can help prevent heat sneaking out through the sides.

Still feeling a chill? Heat may be escaping through the top of the curtain rail – this is why many homes have pelmets above the curtains. For a quick fix, try this hack: roll up a towel and place it on top of the curtains to plug the gap.

Let the sunshine in

If you’re interested in heating your home for free – and who isn’t? – harness the power of the sun. Passive solar energy simply requires that you allow sunlight in at the right time of day. Open the curtains during the day for free heat, soak up the rays and let them boost your mood along with increasing the temperature. Then – and this is the crucial bit – close the curtains before sunset to lock in the warmth and prevent the chill creeping in. Loving

that free heat? Consider a future investment in a solar hot water system. Heating water accounts for up to a quarter of an average home’s energy usage, while a solar system preheats the water, slashing bills and eventually paying for itself. You may also be eligible for government rebates**.

Make a fanfare

It sounds counter-intuitive, but your ceiling fan can actually help heat your home. Check if your fan has a reverse or ‘winter’ mode. On most models, this changes the fan direction to clockwise which, when operated at a low speed, pulls cooler air upwards and moves warm air that has collected near the ceiling back down to where you need it.

Create personal heat

There’s no point in heating the house if you don’t need to. When there’s a chill in the air, put on a jumper or reach for a throw. A wearable electric blanket is particularly handy for those who feel the cold more than most – snuggle up on the sofa or at your desk and plug yourself in to instant heat. Bliss! And don’t forget about tried-and-tested solutions like a good oldfashioned hot water bottle – or a snuggly cat or dog!

GET THE MOST FROM YOUR HEATER

Turn it down: Set the temperature to between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius – any higher is not necessary. Do what your mother told you to do and put on a jumper and warm socks. Time it right: Rather than blasting the heater at max temp when you come home, set it on a timer to turn on 15 minutes before your expected return. Or, if it’s wi-fi connected, switch it on using your smartphone on the way home! Switch it off: Turn the heater off when you’re not in the room and don’t leave it on overnight. If you do need all-night heating, lower the temperature to 16 to 18 degrees Celsius. Use a fan: Electric heaters aren’t the most efficient option, but you can boost their effectiveness by switching on the fan function. No fan function? Point a small desk fan at the heater, which will help to distribute the heat throughout the room. Give a full service: Maintain heaters to keep them running at peak efficiency. Clean filters regularly, have the reverse cycle air con serviced professionally, and the chimney and/or flue swept annually if you’re running a wood burner.

Rug up

Timber boards or floor tiles that feel so deliciously cool in summer can get a bit too cold in winter. And those gaps between floorboards can be a source of draughts. The answer is rugs! Not only are they fantastic insulators, rugs will also give you a lovely soft surface underfoot. And the bigger the better – the more floor you can cover, the better insulated your room will be.

Wool is said to be the best insulating material, while a shaggy rug feels delightfully cosy. But what you most want is thickness. If your rugs are thin, try using more than one and layering them (see from page 15) or bulking them up with a felt rug pad.

HEAT FOR LESS

Cut power bills by wrapping your home in a blanket of warmth this winter, with Earthwool® insulation

Trying to heat an under-insulated home is like cooking a Sunday roast with the oven door open. The good news is, by upgrading your insulation, you can keep all that toasty warmth inside where it belongs – and slash your energy bills in the process! Find out how to get that warm fuzzy feeling, with Earthwool®

COST-EFFECTIVE COMFORT

Cutting living costs is a universal preoccupation right now, and one of the best ways to keep your energy bills low is with insulation, so your heating systems aren’t fighting a losing battle with the outside elements. Earthwool® insulation does this by forming a thermal barrier in your ceilings, walls and underfloor, which blocks cold air from entering, stops heat escaping and keeps your home’s internal temperature at an optimum level.

To insulate ceilings, just roll out the Earthwool® and you’re all set

FIND THE RIGHT PRODUCT

Step one in your journey to a cosier home is choosing the right insulation. Earthwool® insulation products are designed for ceilings, walls and underfloors – each type clearly labelled and colour-coded – all of which are equipped to wrap your home in comfort, as well as providing exceptional acoustic performance. Once you know which area you’re tackling, the next bit is choosing the R-value. This is the measure of thermal resistance – essentially, how effectively it will keep warmth where you want it. The higher the R-value, the better your insulation will perform.

EASY TO INSTALL

If you’re looking at DIY insulation, look no further than Earthwool® insulation. It’s lightweight and easy to handle – and with the support of Earthwool’s DIY instructions and videos, you can get your home toasty in no time. Best of all, Earthwool’s revolutionary ECOSE® Technology results in a super-soft insulation product that’s less itchy or dusty, and formaldehyde-free. For even easier installation, look to Earthwool® Multi-Use rolls – these 19-metre rolls are compact and easier to transport, making them ideal for topping up existing ceiling insulation.

With Earthwool® insulation, you can be sure of year-round comfort – and lower heating/cooling costs

Summer never seems to last long enough, but while the season of warm temperatures might be over, there’s no need to say goodbye to barbecues and outdoor dinner parties. Banish the chill and use your outdoor spaces through all the seasons with Heatstrip, the go-to solution for outdoor heating and comfort.

ON HIGH

When it comes to outdoor heaters, there are a few options, but Heatstrip heaters come out head and shoulders above the rest – literally. Designed to be ceiling or wall mounted, Heatstrip heaters evenly distribute radiant heat down onto the area below them – the dining table or a cosy conversation zone, for example – instead of inefficiently trying to heat the air in between. Since they warm only specific areas and objects, you don’t waste energy heating an entire outdoor room. Sleek and discreet, the black slimline Heatstrip Classic or Heatstrip Enhance sit elegantly and unobtrusively in any space, while the white Heatstrip Elegance achieves virtual invisibility on a white ceiling.

TURN UP THE HEAT

Some outdoor spaces are harder to heat than others and when you’re dealing with a semi-exposed area, with limited protection from the elements, you need a high-intensity heat. Heatstrip Intense is the high-heat, energy-efficient solution. The carbon filament infrared heating element gives instant, high-performance heat with a gentle and visually warming glow.

CONNECT TO CONTROL

Providing instant heat at the flick of a switch – meaning no wheeling out portable heaters or mucking around with gas bottles – Heatstrip outdoor heaters are already winners when it comes to ease of use, but it gets even better; they also come with remote and app control. This smart home connectivity makes it simple to change the heat setting, set a timer, turn it on before you go outside, or check you’ve turned it off at the end of the night. Just use the app on your smartphone, or control via Google or Amazon smart home platforms.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR ALFRESCO SPACE AND TURN YOUR SUMMER HUB INTO A YEARROUND ENTERTAINING ZONE

Enjoying life outside can continue well beyond the end of summer. With a little planning and a few key pieces, you can make the most of your backyard throughout the year. Ramping up alfresco cooking options and specialised outdoor furniture can help reinvent a backyard, but even small changes mean you can enjoy time outdoors during the cooler months. It can also add value to your home by creating a usable backyard for every season, whether you’re entertaining guests, relaxing with the family or doing yoga!

Light it up

Great outdoor lighting is essential for producing a warm and inviting atmosphere in your outside space, says Marianne Zagaras of Lytworx. “Fairy lights are versatile – use them to create a dispersed, twinkling glow,” she says. “Trace them along awnings, pergolas and columns to frame an entertaining area or chill-out space with soft sparkling light.” Winding fairy lights around the branches of a tree can bring it to life at night. “This can

add a welcoming, whimsical vibe to your garden,” says Marianne. Net lights can create a canopy over an uncovered patio setting, or be wrapped around tree trunks for columns of lattice-shaped light. Curtain lights work well as outdoor space dividers, or to turn a wall, fence or hedge into a sparkling feature. Warm festoon lights look wonderful almost anywhere, and provide a brighter, more punctuated effect. “Place them loosely for a fun, abstract vibe or in a straight line for a sleek, streamlined look,” says Marianne.

Many of these lights come in solar options, making it easier (and more affordable) to illuminate even the farthest reaches of the garden.

Eating under the stars

No matter the season, a barbecue is a must for any outdoor dining space. From small charcoal models to a full alfresco kitchen, an outdoor grill creates a fantastic atmosphere. It’s also great for those with limited indoor entertaining space and keeps cooking odours out of the house. While it’s designed for cooking rather than heating, there’s something wonderfully cosy about standing around a hot grill. To make this more of a feature, consider a woodfired pizza oven, so you can watch the flickering flames before your dinner is cooked.

Heatwave

There’s a huge variety of outdoor heaters to warm up chilly evenings, from freestanding propane heaters to electric patio models. But it’s important to consider the needs of your space before making a decision – for example, a heat source that’s within reach of small hands may not be the best option for families with littlies. And how big an area do you need to heat? Is it wired for electricity or plumbed for natural gas?

Cosy up a corner with an abundance of lights and seating grouped around a sparkly fire pit. (Remember to remove fairy lights before lighting the pit!)
“Whether creating a calm space or a lively party vibe, outdoor lighting can make it happen – fast!”

An open fire adds an extra layer of appeal to an outdoor space, says Andrew Di Bartolo from Aurus Firepits. “There’s nothing like huddling around a cosy wood fire with family and friends,” he says. For smaller courtyard spaces, Andrew recommends a compact, low-smoke fire pit. “The dual walls and perforated base optimise airflow to all sides of the fire, which enables efficient burning and means less smoke is produced,” he explains.

Seasonal colours

To create a comfortable space, it’s important to keep your outdoor area clear of plant debris, which can be abundant in the cooler months. As the season begins, prune any dead or damaged branches, as well as any overgrown shrubs and trees. This will tidy up your plants’ shapes as well as help to keep their size under control.

Plants can also provide decorative colour and texture so, if designing a space from scratch, keep autumn hues in mind. Gardening writer Rachel Clare suggests choosing plants that respond to cooler weather by turning shades of orange, yellow and red before shedding their leaves.

Along with an autumnal colour show, deciduous trees help to regulate the temperature of a garden. Once their

foliage has fallen, sunlight can filter through (and into your home) during winter; they also provide leafy shade for plants and people in summer.

Weather protection

Setting up an area in which family and friends can gather – with shelter from light rain (and glaring sun in summer) – is key, but adding further weatherproofing will help extend your nights outdoors. Cafe blinds come in a range of materials and styles to suit any outdoor space. They’re easily installed and removed, making them a versatile option for both entertaining and everyday use. Just be sure to check with your local planning authority before installing external structures like blinds or awnings.

Cosy comforts

Comfy rugs, outdoor cushions and good music will go a long way in warding off the chill and encouraging friends to settle in for a convivial evening under the stars. Make your space extra welcoming with an outdoor rug, and place warm throws in a basket nearby so guests can reach for one as the temperature drops. And you don’t need a fancy outdoor entertainment system – a portable Bluetooth speaker will do the trick.

HOT STUFF

Take your pick from a range of wood-fired outdoor heaters, but position them away from nearby structures or overhanging vegetation

Chimeneas Front loading, freestanding and designed to omit heat from their top, chimeneas are good for small spaces such as courtyards.

Braziers Self-contained and portable, braziers often stand on feet and feature a grill for cooking over coals or firewood.

Fire pits Whether they are dug out and lined with stones and bricks or placed as a freestanding bowl to gather around, fire pits tend to have more open flames. This makes an attractive feature but also requires extra caution as they need to be placed away from anything combustible.

Keep in mind…

n Make sure any lighting used outside is suitable for outdoors. Any hardwired electrical fixtures must be installed by a licensed electrician.

n Position fire pits well away from combustible structures including fencing, decking and overhanging trees. Always check your fire pit manufacturer’s safety and set-up advice.

n Burn dry, sustainably forested timber. Choose hardwood and don’t burn driftwood, wood that has been painted, pressure-treated or stained, plywood or particle board, as it can release toxins into the air.

n Check with your local fire authority if and when there are fire bans in your area or if you need a licence to light an open fire.

n Ensure lit fires are never left unattended, supervise children and pets at all times and have a bucket or water or hose nearby.

DON’T LEAVE YOUR GARDEN OUT IN THE COLD – THERE’S PLENTY YOU CAN DO TO GET IT READY FOR THE SEASON AHEAD

When cool weather sets in, it’s so tempting to stay inside with a warm cuppa. But before you get too comfortable, spare a thought for the garden. Now’s a good time to get stuck into those outdoor jobs to ensure it’s looking lush and ready for action come spring.

Clean & clear

Clutter and mess make gardening harder than it needs to be. Don’t wait until spring to do a big clean, advises horticulturist Tyler Howard (@ thoward_hort). “Organise pots, tidy areas and sweep away debris from around the shed or greenhouse,” he says. “Give paths and benches a good clean with a high-pressure

hose or stiff brush to remove algae and help prevent slippery surfaces.”

While you’re in the cleaning mood, remove all dead, damaged and diseased growth, fallen fruit and leaf litter, says Tyler. These can be broken up into small bits and added directly to the compost heap or discarded in green waste bins. Any diseased plant material can be disposed of

in green waste, as council composting facilities should reach temperatures capable of killing most pathogens.

New opportunities

The garden may be looking a little bare now, but horticulturist and Scotts Osmocote ambassador

Melissa King says that this can be a blessing. “The bones and structure of a garden are often revealed in winter, so now is an ideal time to assess what is and isn’t working,” she says. “Pull out plants that aren’t up to scratch, fill bare spots with new and interesting plants and introduce splashes of colour where they are needed most.”

Ground breaking

For new plantings of deciduous trees, shrubs and roses, enrich the soil with plenty of organic matter, like a quality compost and soil improver. “Doing this will nourish and revitalise the soil, providing a strong foundation for plant growth – healthy soil means healthy plants,” says Melissa. “Get bare-rooted specimens into the garden as soon as possible because they don’t like their roots drying out.” And if you have no planting plans, Tyler suggests it’s still a good idea to improve the soil. “Apply plenty of manure and compost, such as cow manure and mushroom compost, for general garden areas, around perennials and throughout

the vegetable beds. This provides insulation and warmth for the soil and feeds microbes, too,” he says.

Cold comforts

If you live in a frost-prone area, you will need to protect frost-sensitive plants, like seedlings, and trees and shrubs from subtropical or tropical climes. “If a frosty night is forecast, move tender plants to a warm, protected spot (if they are in pots) or cover them before dark with buckets, frost cloths, upturned pots or even cardboard boxes, and remove the coverings in the morning,” says Melissa. “Also, try to water the garden well before frost – moist soil holds onto more heat than dry soil.”

Many pet owners are reluctant to cut their animal’s claws (it’s not easy) but there’s an alternative to tricky clippers: a grinding tool. Dremel has these tips. Introduce your pup Tap the claw before clipping to desensitise and let your dog sniff the grinder as you reassure them. Then turn it on to familiarise them with its sound and vibration. Locate the quick On white claws, the quick shows pink. With black nails, find the spot on the underside where it separates out into a triangular shape with two outer ‘walls’. Don’t grind beyond this point.

A WINTER’S TAIL

Ever had to move your warmth -hogging pet away from the heater or fire? Despite their furry coverings, our dogs and cats do sometimes feel the cold. According to Dr David Lee, president of the Australian Small Animal Veterinarians Group of the Australian Veterinary Association, size rather than breed matters when it comes to who feels it the most. “Due to a smaller body and a higher surface area compared to weight, the smaller the pet, the more likely they are to feel the cold, so it’s more size than actual breed dependent,” he explains. “Plus, shorter-coated pets will naturally feel the chill more than fluffier pets.”

Super chill

Signs to watch out for include shivering or huddling in warm spaces. David says that the general rule of thumb is that if you are feeling cold, it’s safe to assume your pet is likely feeling it, too. And if you need a coat outside, your dog will probably need one.

Be extra alert if your pet is more than seven years old – that’s when they’re considered seniors and are more likely to be sensitive to dropping temperatures and suffer from conditions made worse by the cold, such as arthritis.

Hot dog

What’s the best way to keep a pet

warm? For dogs, the range of fashionforward coats is enormous, so there is bound to be one that suits your climate and dog’s shape and size. Usually these can be left on all day, but David suggests monitoring your dog on warmer days to ensure there are no signs of overheating, such as panting. Remember also that many breeds take matters into their own paws and develop a thicker coat

during the cooler months (then shed it everywhere when it warms up).

Use heat pads cautiously. David says he has seen dogs with thermal burns. A good coat and extra blankets on their bed should be all they need, unless a vet suggests otherwise.

Make sure your dog always has access to plenty of fresh water. The combination of a heated house and low humidity means dogs need more water in winter than you might expect.

Cosy kitty

Protecting felines from the cold weather is yet another good reason to keep them inside. Setting them up with an igloo or bed filled with fluffy blankets will keep your cat comfortable. Like dogs, cats also develop an undercoat during winter, so don’t forget to groom regularly to prevent matting – plus, brushing also helps you bond with your pet. 

Puppy love

You’re about to welcome a new four-legged member of the family – congratulations! But as you will quickly realise, the decisions don’t end with picking a breed that’s right for you. They call it pet parenthood for a reason. Whether you have a lively puppy or a laidback senior on your hands, a dog needs guidance - and the right accessories. The PEDIGREE ® brand has these top tips for you.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Most dogs – whether a pup or adult – take about a month to settle into their new environment, so be patient. As with humans, a good meal can go a long way towards making them feel at home. A nutritionally balanced diet to suit your dog’s age and lifestyle is key. PEDIGREE canned and dry foods are formulated with vitamins and minerals at the right levels to support healthy development. For puppies aged four months and over, PEDIGREE ® DENTASTIX ™ Daily Oral Care Treats can reduce tartar build-up and clean hard-to-reach teeth.

SAFE AND SOUND

Puppies can be a lot like children; busy investigating, having fun and making messy mistakes. You’ll need to pup-proof your home. Stash choking

hazards, cleaning products and electrical devices out of reach, secure cupboards and make sure your dog is never left alone near open doors or windows. Don’t forget the yard either. Cover ponds or pools, and patch any holes in fences and gates that your dog could squeeze through or dig under. Check garden beds for toxic plants, too.

WARM WELCOME

Make a checklist of potential purchases before your pup arrives. A bed, blankets, toys, a crate, and even a kennel provide a comfortable place for your dog day or night, while a collar and lead, bowls and grooming tools are all must-haves

to help them settle in, stay safe and give you the tools for the daily exercise dogs require. All Australian states and territories require a dog to be registered and microchipped. Check with your vet which vaccinations are needed for where you live.

Finally, remember patience is key to creating a fun and rewarding friendship between you and your furry new pal.

Dog crates are useful for training and to give your pup a safe space of their own, but they’re not always pretty. Bunnings Workshop member Rylie (@LePallet) solved the problem by making a custom den for lovely mutt Nala, complete with a mini sliding barn door which perfectly matches the human-sized ones in her home.

“I built the cabinet from recycled materials – pine and a piece of hardwood benchtop left over from our house renovation,” says DIYer and keen carpentry hobbyist Rylie. “The cabinet-size rail track I found in store for the barn door was a perfect size for this job.” And installing the

window bars was not as difficult as it looks, he says: “The secret is to drill the holes at the top of the window frame deeper than the base.”

Rylie has the skills to build the cabinet and door from scratch and his finished cabinet measures 1100mm wide and 650mm deep, with a 40mm-thick benchtop making it a standard kitchen counter height of 900mm. However, pretty much any kind of cabinet could be upcycled as a den – just make sure that the proportions are appropriate for the size and habits of your pet, and reinforce the structure if necessary so it’s sturdy enough for the task.

Here’s how you can re-create Rylie’s warm-toned timber benchtop, a cute viewing window and clever slidingdoor mechanism. Finish with petfriendly water-based, low-VOC paint, tinted in store in a colour to suit your interior scheme.

1 On the hardwood panel, round over the edges and corners with 120-grit abrasive paper, then smooth all over with 180-grit. Seal with timber oil, applying and buffing with a cloth. Position the top on the cabinet with 20mm overhang at the sides and 30mm at the front. Secure to the inside frame using two brackets each corner, predrilling with a 3mm bit for 20mm button head screws.

2 Measure the height of the viewing window frame, add 20mm, then, wearing safety glasses, use a hacksaw to cut curtain rod into four pieces at this length. Use a 16mm bit to drill four evenly spaced holes 10mm into the base rail of the frame and 40mm into the top. To install the bars, slide the top ends up into the top holes to clear the base frame, then drop the bottom ends into the base holes.

DIY TOOLKIT

3 To install the door hardware, follow the pack instructions to centre the rail of the door track set along the front, leaving the recommended clearance down from the top of the cabinet, then pre-drill with a 3mm bit to secure with supplied screws. Attach rollers and hang the door. Position the barrel bolt at the base of the door, with catches on the base rail at the centre and the end, securing with the supplied screws. 1 2 5 4

BOLD AND

Textures, patterns and colours are all important ingredients when creating the daring and eclectic look known as maximalism. It’s perfect for those who love to experiment with different styles, and who are not afraid to make a strong statement in their home.

Interior stylist Evie Kemp (evie kemp.com) says a maximalist interior should look like it has evolved over time, not been bought from a showroom. “Think of the first ‘layer’ as being the walls and how they’re decorated,” she explains. “Next, art, rugs, furniture and then cushions, lighting and curtains. Lastly, objects, books, glass and ceramics. Don’t get

too hung up on matching – try and just go for what you love and let it come together organically.”

More is more

Don’t be afraid to combine multiple patterns, says stylist Sam van Kan. “Mix checks, florals, stripes, even animal prints in the same room, but balance them with a consistent colour palette.” Wallpaper can be a powerful tool here. As Superfresco Easy trend and design expert Paula Taylor explains, “Botanical designs add character and bring the outside in, geometrics introduce calmness with their structured order [see above], while patterned wallpaper creates a stylish focal point.” 

CLOUD-FRAME MIRROR

Make a heavenly statement piece from humble building materials. Here’s how

1 Take a plain round mirror (ours is 80cm), place on stiff cardboard and trace the outline with a felt-tip pen. Cut this out using scissors, then draw a 10cm border within this circle and cut out to form a ring-shaped frame. Tip: Don’t bother cutting too neatly as the cardboard will be covered.

2 In a well-ventilated area, cover a flat work surface with a plastic drop sheet, place the frame on top and put on a mask, eye protection and white disposable gloves. Using the applicator provided, apply expanding foam to the frame, building layers and smoothing with gloved hands. Allow to dry.

3 Using gloved hands, apply at least two layers of plaster joint compound, allowing to dry after each coat. Sand with 120-grit abrasive paper to shape, apply white water-based paint and allow to dry. Attach the finished cloud frame to the mirror using contact adhesive, then secure in position with the provided brackets and fixings suitable for your wall type.

Add bursts of brightness in unexpected ways, such as customising a cupboard with paint and flamboyant curtains

Be inspired

Unsure of where to start? Begin with a statement piece, suggests Evie. “This might be an artwork, a piece of furniture or a rug – something substantial that can be a starting point for the rest of the room. Think about colours or styles that go with that piece, and then let those additions inform the next.” Paint is a fast and affordable option for creating cohesiveness. “Look for a shade that works with all the disparate elements you’ve gathered,” says Evie. 

Eclectic tastes

Mixing textures, such as velvety soft furnishings with chunky knit throws and woven rugs, can help to add depth and interest. Curating modern, antique and retro elements evokes authenticity. “Lamps are key, and make the most of a fabulous backdrop or wall colour,” adds Evie Kemp.

WAVE BEDHEAD

Make an on-trend headboard by drawing and cutting wavy curves along the length of a standard sheet of MDF

Tools & mater ials

n Safety equipment (mask, ear and eye protection)

n Ruler, pencil and eraser

n Combination square

n Round object (we used a paint can)

n Quick-grip clamps

n Jigsaw

n Cloth

n Drop sheet

n 230mm paint roller with spare cover and tray with liners

n Mini microfibre roller

n 2400mm x 1200mm x 18mm MDF sheet•

n 180-grit abrasive paper

n Primer

n Water-based enamel paint in two contrasting colours (we used Dulux Sink Hole and British Paints Wisteria Wonder)

n Furniture safety anchors

1 Decide how deep you want the waves to be by sketching a few on scrap paper until you’re happy with the outline. Measure vertically from the peak of the waves to the lowest point. Halve this measurement to find the centre of the waves.

2 Using a combination square, mark the centre measurement down from the top of the MDF sheet. Slide the combination square along the top to mark along the entire length, then join marks using a ruler to form a continuous centre line.

3 Using a round object as a template, draw opposing equal-sized curves above and below the centre line to fit the length of the MDF sheet, creating a wave design. Tip: Use pencil not pen, so you can erase marks easily and redraw the waves if necessary.

4 Working in a well-ventilated area, clamp the MDF sheet to a workbench with the wave edge overhanging. Wearing safety gear, use a jigsaw to carefully cut out the waves, cutting towards the top edge to remove each excess piece safely (they will become heavy and start to drop).

Smooth edges with 180-grit abrasive paper, then wipe off dust with a damp cloth.

5 Unclamp the MDF sheet and, using a 230mm roller and lined tray, apply primer all over the bedhead, including both faces and the edges, to help prevent the MDF absorbing moisture and bowing. Once the primer is dry, use a clean roller and tray to apply two coats of the main colour of water-based enamel paint to the front face of the headboard, allowing to dry after each coat. Tip: The MDF is heavy, so enlist a second pair of hands to help flip it over.

6 Using a mini microfibre roller and clean tray, carefully apply two coats of the detail colour of water-based enamel paint along the cut edge of the wave shapes, allowing to dry after each coat. Tip: To help achieve a clean, crisp edge, don’t load the mini roller with too much paint.

7 Once completely dry, install the headboard in position with safety anchors and fasteners appropriate for your wall type.

You could use painter’s tape to mask up a more abstract design if you prefer, or use lettering stencils to spell out a greeting

PATTERNED DOORMAT

Personalise a plain mat to create a warm welcome

1 To achieve our checkerboard pattern, apply 24mm painter’s tape to a plain doormat (ours is 60cm x 40cm) in a grid, forming square gaps the same width as the tape.

2 Working in a well-ventilated area and wearing a mask, eye protection and disposable gloves, apply white spray primer to the taped mat, allow to dry, then apply two coats of your chosen spray

Exterior walls look great with a statement hue, too. This corrugated iron cladding positively glows in Dulux Indian Red, with French doors in Dulux Falkland and classic white trims providing charming contrast

paint colour (we used Dulux Pompeian Pink), allowing to dry after each coat. Tip: Use spray primer and paint formulated for use outdoors.

3 Remove the tape to reveal spaced coloured squares, then apply fresh tape, again in a grid, but this time laying the tape over the coloured squares. Repeat step 2.

4 Remove the tape again to reveal a checkerboard pattern. Allow the doormat to dry thoroughly (check the paint manufacturer’s instructions) before placing in position.

THEY’RE OFTEN THE STAR OF A BATHROOM – SO HERE’S HOW TO FIND A TUB THAT PLAYS THE ROLE PERFECTLY

A wall recess provides excellent storage alongside a freestanding tub

Being the centrepiece of many bathrooms, baths need to not only look good, but be functional and practical. With an array of shapes, styles and materials available, there’s a lot to consider before buying. Here are some tips on how to choose the ideal soaker.

Size considerations

You may love the idea of a luxurious spa-like freestanding bath but, if space is tight, look at more compact alternatives. Interior designer Trudi Scrymgour, from Form Follows Function (formfollowsfunction.com.au), suggests inset (built-in) or back-towall designs instead. “These styles can

be more affordable to buy as well as install,” she adds. Luke Di Michiel, industrial designer at Caroma, agrees it’s crucial to balance the size of your bathroom with your choice of bath. “That will mean less chance of the bathtub impacting the traffic and flow to the basin, shower or toilet,” he says.

Soak ing style

If you love indulgent soaks and space is not an issue, a freestanding bath could be best. Or check out the Caroma Newbury inset bath that comes with an optional head and backrest. If your tub is primarily practical – for example, getting kids clean – an inset bath fits the bill. Their design means they have a ledge that’s ideal for

Also known as built-in baths, these are fitted flush against a wall and enclosed by a customised surround. “This space-saving option can also be integrated with an overhead shower,” says Trudi. “If so, you’ll also need to install a screen or shower curtain.” Matching tiles on the wall and surround keep the look sleek. “Or try a mix of plain and patterned or coloured tiles to lift a family bathroom,” suggests Trudi.

Back-to-wall (D-shaped) baths

These models are a blend of inset and freestanding baths. “For those who love the look of a freestanding bath, but don’t have the space in the bathroom, a solution is a D-shaped tub that looks like it is freestanding from the front but actually sits flush against the wall,” says Luke. “This saves space and also means you don’t need to clean behind it.” In addition, their design means these can be easier to plumb.

Freestanding baths

Deep, freestanding baths in striking shapes – rectangular, oval and slipper-style – have grown increasingly popular because they make a strong design statement. The Caroma ‘Contura’ (above) creates a striking focal point. However, due to their generous dimensions, they need plenty of room, says Luke. “Bear in mind freestanding baths need space around them so you can fit a mop or vacuum cleaner,” he says.

“Don’t be shy about testing out the tub you’re thinking about buying. Climbing inside and lying down will show you how comfortable it is, and also if there are any issues getting in and out of it”

keeping shampoos and soaps handy, which freestanding baths don’t have. For freestanding styles, intended to float in the centre of a space, you’ll need to position a stool or table within easy reach, or place accessories on a moveable shelf or caddy that sits across the tub.

“In a smaller bathroom, shelves or a wall niche positioned within easy reach of the bath are spaceefficient ideas,” says Trudi. “You just need to be careful when renovating an old home, as a wall recess may impact plumbing.” If your bath is likely to be used by more than one person at a time, choose a model with a central wastewater outlet, so one person doesn’t end up perched on the plug.

Plumbing options

This is crucial if you are renovating – your existing plumbing may not be easily compatible with the type of bath you want. Inset baths are much easier to plumb in as they sit against the wall and their pipework is hidden behind the surround. For freestanding baths, you need to consider the tapware and wastewater location. “Freestanding baths generally require the installation of a freestanding bath filler, which needs specialised floor mounting and water supply access via the floor,” says Luke Di Michiel. “This might not be possible for all installations.”

Materials matter

Most baths tend to be made from acrylic, which Luke notes is usually more affordable and lighter than alternative materials and has good heat-retention properties. Solid surface baths – with a smooth, seamless, non-porous finish made from engineered composite materials such as natural minerals and resin – are also popular.

Note that heavier styles, such as freestanding natural stone baths, can weigh up to 500kg, so may require structural reinforcement under the supervision of a structural engineer.

REINVENT YOUR ROOM WITH A NEW LAMINATE FLOOR. FIND OUT HOW WITH THESE NEED-TOKNOW TIPS AND DIY CHECKLIST

Words SHELLEY TUSTIN and LORNA GOW

Photography JAMES MOFFATT Styling SAMANTHA POINTON

Abeautiful room starts from the ground up, and if your current flooring is letting you down, floating laminate floorboards could be the simple fix of your dreams. Not only do they offer all the warmth and character of real timber for a fraction of the cost, they are a fast solution you can DIY in a weekend. We’ve stepped out all you need to know, from product decisions to how to set about your very own floor revamp.

Decisions, decisions

Among the many benefits of laminate flooring is the incredible range of styles and designs available. There are products created to replicate timbers including oak, blackbutt and spotted gum, in every shade from sandy pale to almost black, and in board layout patterns from straight brick to basket, chevron or herringbone. Aside from looks, consider your lifestyle – a hectic home with kids and pets needs the most hardwearing surface, and laminate flooring is extremely durable. It also comes in a more waterproof ‘hybrid’ option, designed to even better withstand liquid spills and high humidity.

What lies beneath

Laminate boards can be laid over virtually any floor surface, as long as it’s in reasonable condition: clean, level, structurally sound and dry. Before laying your new floor, you need to install an underlay – this adds insulation and muffles noise underfoot, but most importantly will help to protect the laminate from any moisture that may come up through the subfloor. Some laminate products come with underlay already attached to each board.

On the edge

If you have skirting boards, it’s a good idea to remove them before laying a laminate floor. While it is possible to lay the flooring without removing the skirting boards first, you won’t get a perfect, professional finish and there will likely be a visible gap where the floorboards butt up against the skirting. Instead, carefully lever off the skirting boards and replace them when you’re done, so they neatly overlap the laminate. If you can’t remove the skirting, another option is to install narrow timber moulding to cover the gap as an attractive trim.

LAMINATE FLOORING CHECKLIST

So, you’re ready to take the plunge and tackle DIY floating floorboards for the first time? Here’s what you need to do...

Keep in mind...

n When using power cutting tools, always wear the appropriate safety gear, follow the instructions for the product or equipment and work in a well-ventilated area.

1

A smooth, level subfloor or substrate is optimal when laying floating boards on top. If the subfloor is concrete, remove any fitted carpet or loose bits of old flooring, give it a sweep, then lay a 2m straightedge or spirit level across it. Get down and check for gaps between the straightedge and the subfloor – if there are any more than 3mm deep, you’re going to need a levelling compound For timber, ply or particleboard subfloors, check for loose sections and fix or replace to level. Laminate boards can also be laid over a tiled subfloor as is, so long as it’s flat and the grout lines are less than 2mm wide and deep.

2 Now the real fun begins: shopping! To calculate the amount of materials you’ll need and get a sense of budget, first measure the room width and length to establish the area. Many brands of flooring have a useful table on the packaging to help you work out the number of packs required but, if you’re unsure, ask a flooring department team member in store. Once that’s sorted, browse the range online or in store, keeping a note of the details of your favourites – the item number (I/N) of each product will help most during this research, and for checking availability.

3 You’ve made your final selection of laminate boards so, next, make sure you have factored in all the other necessary bits and pieces. Some brands come with an installation kit but, if yours doesn’t, pop one in your trolley. You’ll need 10mm flooring spacers, plus a tapping block and pulling bar (included in the kit) which will probably come in handy for tight spots. Appropriate underlay is essential – check with the board manufacturer or in store to ensure what you choose is fit for the task – as is adequate safety gear (mask, plus eye and ear protection).

Finally, ensure you’re kitted out with the right tools. Experts recommend starting the first row of boards from the left corner of the room, but if that left-hand wall isn’t dead straight, a chalk line will help save the day. For paler-hued boards, consider using a white rubber mallet, which is less likely to leave marks than black. Flooring invariably involves a lot of cutting, so check your circular saw (for straight cuts and rips) and jigsaw (for the fiddly bits) are up to scratch. All that’s left now is to read your board packaging instructions thoroughly, browse how-to videos (see Watch it!, above), and get geared up to expand your DIY skill set.

HOME WORK

GIVE YOUR WFH BUSINESS A BOOST WITH AN OFFICE SPACE THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU, YOUR JOB AND YOUR CLIENTS

The end of the financial year is a great time to review the set-up of your home-based business, including whether your home office suits you and the work you do. If you’ve been putting up with a less-than-ideal space, you can take advantage of the end of the financial year to make changes. Plus, you may be able to claim home-office purchases against your income for tax purposes, but check with your tax advisor or accountant before you invest.

Sort out your space

If your job takes you out and about, your kitchen table may be where you tackle admin and invoicing. Look around to see if there’s somewhere you can carve out a work area. John Harrison of Kaboodle Kitchen says a great way to maximise space for a home office is to extend your wardrobe or kitchen cabinetry. “Create a cohesive, seamless look by using benchtops or shelving that match existing joinery to make a desk extension or to add floating or open shelves,” he says.

If you already have a dedicated area for business, think about how well it works. Improvements could be as simple as redecorating, moving furniture and investing in a few key pieces. Try fresh paint (blues are said to be good for productivity) and place your desk to take advantage of any natural light. Position it side-on to a window to help reduce screen glare.

Good artificial lighting is a must. Engage an electrician to install downlights for general illumination and a professional look, but anyone can add a stylish desk lamp for a targeted glow – perfect for both close work and a hit of personality.

Find the right furniture

Your desk should be big and comfortable enough so that you can spread out, but it shouldn’t take over the space, says stylist Tilly Roberts (tillyrobertsdesign.com). Make sure there’s enough room to easily access your chair and move around the desk in

APP ASSISTANCE

Holly Shoebridge of Oceans Accounting (oceansaccounting. com.au) suggests four apps to help smooth your working life.* Xero Cloud-based accounting app for small-to-medium enterprise (SME) businesses of all sizes and structures.

Rounded Costeffective accounting app, targeted to sole traders. “The team at Rounded are very responsive, and the platform is really easy to use,” says Holly.

comfort. “Face it towards something inspiring, like an artwork, photos of loved ones or a moodboard,” she suggests.

When seated on your chair, your thighs should be parallel to the ground and feet flat. Chair back support is important, says Tilly. “Make sure you can lean against it – a short back can be restrictive.” The seat should be deep enough for you to sit back while having clearance behind your knees at the front edge.

Stash your stuff

Paperwork tends to hang around, but switching to digital record-keeping can help tame the paper mountain. Plus, says Jessica Haslem of Flexi Storage, “One of the easiest ways to optimise home office storage is to declutter.”

Review your current storage options – if you need lockable cabinetry for valuable items, now could be a good time to invest. For documents you may need to keep, such as for tax returns, try archive boxes or lidded plastic tubs. Store them somewhere accessible but out of the way to keep your workspace clear.

Some storage systems let you mix and match pieces. “Pair a Flexi Storage Clever Cube unit with a range of inserts, like a two-drawer insert or wire undershelf basket, to store important paperwork or hold frequently used items like pens,” suggests Jessica. “Use the remaining compartments for smaller electronics such as chargers, headphones and flash drives.”

“Could your office be relocated to a better place on your home’s floorplan, like near an entryway?”

Go public

First impressions are important when your workspace needs to host client meetings. “For a home office that looks great on a video call, open and floating shelves are perfect for showcasing your personal style,” says John. “Add plants for a touch of green, or even wall panelling for visual interest in a colour of your choice.”

If your space doesn’t allow for a stylish or neutral backdrop, turn to tech. Plenty of virtual meeting apps, including Teams and Zoom, have a blur or replacement background option, but read the room; humorous or frivolous scenes can send an unprofessional message. With in-person client meetings, a calm, tidy space will likely instil confidence in prospective customers. “Imagine the space from the client’s perspective,” says Tilly. “Be mindful of items you might be used to seeing, but can be an eyesore to others. Hide messy cords in a cord station, use beautiful storage boxes for office essentials and bring it to life with art, fresh flowers or photos.”

TO DIY FOR

HAVING THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT ALWAYS MAKES A JOB EASIER, BUT SOME TOOLS CAN BE GAME CHANGERS

While your toolkit probably includes the absolute essentials, there’s a world of lesserknown equipment that can help you power through projects with precision and ease, or broaden the scope of what you can tackle. Check out a few of our surprise favourites.

Plunge saw

Many DIYers and tradies consider a circular saw a must, but when there’s a need for greater precision, for example when trimming millimetres off a door, laying a floating floor or starting a cut in the middle of a material, Andrew Murray of Ozito recommends using a plunge saw. “The addition of a straight track for the saw to run along allows for a perfectly straight cut, even when cutting a bevel,” explains Andrew.

“And, unlike a circular saw, a plunge saw has an accurate depth stop to achieve a plunge cut without kickback, making tasks like cutting a hole in a timber benchtop for a sink achievable,” he adds.

Laser measurer

To gauge distances or spaces, a laser measurer is much easier to use and more accurate than a traditional tape measure, according to Vindi Chathrine of Bosch. “With the click of a button, a laser measurer can be used to accurately measure distances up to 150m, with the ability to store and

transfer data and calculate volume and area,” says Vindi. “This is ideal if you need to determine square meterage for flooring materials, wallpaper or paint.” If you opt for a model with bluetooth connectivity, the data can be transferred to an app and documented for easy reference.

Handheld rotary tool

The endlessly adaptable ‘go-to gadget’ for DIY and craft enthusiasts has to be a handheld rotary power tool. As Caroline Chagas of Dremel explains, “Rotary tools can be used for cutting, sanding, engraving, cleaning, polishing, sharpening, grinding, routing and drilling holes, making them one of the most flexible pieces of equipment in a home workshop.” Cordless models are great for short bursts of work that need mobility, like shaving off plaster, whereas for hobbyists who want to

ABOVE For long, smooth cuts through solid timber, plywood, melamine or MDF, a plunge saw with track does the trick

use the tool for prolonged periods, a corded solution may be preferable. You can change the function by adding accessories, with each serving a specific purpose, from tile cutting and buffing metal to grout removal.

Tool bag

A sturdy tool bag allows you to take stock, gather everything you need for a project and cart it from your tool area. Alternatively, use it as a ‘go bag’ stocked with regularly used tools and accessories. When choosing, consider which size suits your tools and look for a bag made from durable material with multiple organisational pockets and a wide, easy-access opening.

Wet and dry vacuum

DIY projects are prone to mess, but with a wet and dry vac, you can suck up everything from sawdust, wood shavings and rubble to soil, leaves, grass clippings and water with ease. “Being so powerful and versatile, they allow you to clean all areas of the home, outdoors and garage in a way a stick vac can’t,” explains Mark Giannakopoulos of Karcher. “You can also add accessories like a car cleaning attachment kit,” he says. Some models have a blower function and, with suitable attachments, can even inflate air mattresses. Mark recommends choosing a machine with good suction power and manoeuvrability, a great accessory range and adequate cord length.

Multi-function scraper

Priced at under $20 and small enough to fit in your pocket, a multi-function paint scraper tool can be invaluable throughout the painting process. Designed to function as a chisel to scrape flat surfaces and get into cracks to remove flaky paint or debris, this handy tool can also be used as a putty knife to smooth gap sealant into cracks. The blade’s point easily lifts paint lids, the curved scraping edge is ideal for removing excess paint from rollers before washing, and some include a hole which acts as a lever to remove nails. For added functionality, look for a scraper with a metal end, which can be used for hammering and firmly securing paint lids.

Weed extractor

Pesky weeds are the thorn in every gardener’s side, yet with the right tool, removing them can be surprisingly quick and satisfying. Weed extractors such as Cyclone’s ‘Extract’ weeder make light work of plucking weeds from lawns and garden beds. Far easier than digging or pulling, the device has tines and a foot grip that allow you to lever weeds and deep roots from the ground without having to bend or kneel. Then, thanks to a spring-loaded eject release, the weeds can be dropped straight into a wheelbarrow or green bin.

THIS PAINTED PEGBOARD TAKES

TOOL ORGANISING UP A NOTCH

Project and styling SAMANTHA POINTON

Photography JAMES MOFFATT

Atrusty roll of good-quality painter’s tape is the only secret to this low-effort, big-impact style hack. We turned a bland tool-tidying space in a garage into a fun and functional work of art, by carefully masking a simple, chevron-like design onto our black metal pegboards and spray-painting away! Here’s how we did it.

Tools & materials

n Safety equipment (eye protection, mask and gloves)

n Drop sheet

n Sugar soap wipes

n Pegboard/s (we used three 900mm x 450mm pegboards)

n Painter’s tape

n Specialty spray paint for metal/prepainted surfaces

EXPERT TIP

SPRAY THE PAINT IN LIGHT ‘PASSES’, AND FOLLOW THE RECOMMENDED DRYING TIMES FOR YOUR CONDITIONS

1 Decide on a design, then clean the pegboard surface with sugar soap wipes. In a well-ventilated area, spread drop sheets over the work surface and surrounds. Place pegboard face up and position tape, pressing along edges of each strip with your fingertips.

2 Wearing safety gear, apply spray paint according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Tip: Cover sections for different colours (or negative space) with scrap paper and tape to protect from overspray, wait for the first colour to dry, then cover that before spraying the next.

3 Once all the spray-painted panels are dry, carefully remove the tape by pulling back and up at a low, 90° angle to reveal your design. Tip: If paint does start flaking, lightly run the point of a craft scalpel blade along the edge of the tape before continuing to peel off.

Keep in mind...

n When spray-painting, always wear safety equipment (eye protection, gloves and a mask) and ensure the work area is well ventilated.

n If drilling into walls to install a finished pegboard, use a stud finder to check for wiring or pipework and turn off the power before working, then use fixings appropriate for your wall type. If unsure, call a professional.

Two standard finger-jointed timber panels are the perfect size for this home office project. You’ll need a jigsaw to navigate the curved corner cuts, but the laminate finish is so lovely it just needs a light sand and wipe-on wax.

Keep in mind…

n Work in a well-ventilated area and wear a mask when using cutting tools and sanding.

n Enlist a second pair of hands to move the desk, avoiding sideways pressure on the legs.

n For stability, position against a wall. Note: this desk is not designed for climbing or sitting on.

1 For the top, on the back of a timber panel, mark 300mm in from the sides and the ends and tap in a nail. Attach string to a pencil then wrap the string around the nail and mark curves from edge to edge. Cut curves with a jigsaw.

2 On the other panel, cut two 750mm legs using a circular saw with straightedge. Mark 250mm down from the tops and 300mm in from the sides to tap in the nail with pencil and string. Mark curves from edge to edge (top section is flat). Cut with a jigsaw.

3 Round over all edges, except the top and base of the legs, using a sander with 60-grit disc. Change to 120-grit to smooth again, then 180-grit. Wipe away dust with a damp cloth. Position the top face down on a drop sheet.

4 On the outside of the legs, secure two 20mm brackets against the flat section with 25mm screws. On the inside, secure 50mm brackets slightly offset. Centre a 1200mm pine rail, with the legs against it, checking overhang is even, then mark around them.

5 Apply timber adhesive along the top of a leg, reposition and secure through brackets. Apply adhesive along a 19mm side of the centre rail, position it against the leg and secure from the outside with two 50mm screws. Secure the remaining leg to top and rail.

Tuft love

Add texture and interest with these strappy specimens

Carex

Also known as sedge, this large group of ornamental grasses encompasses a variety of forms, from dwarf tufts to large tussocks, with slender leaves ranging from pale green to bronze. The ribbonlike, variegated foliage of ‘Feather Falls (PBR)’ cascades beautifully over pots, edges or retaining walls.

Blue fescue

With finely textured tufts of silverblue foliage, this landscaping superstar is perfect for creating dreamy drifts or adding texture and interest to rockeries or perennial beds. It grows up to 30cm tall and produces spikes of pale-green-tolight-brown flowers in summer.

Lomandra

Depending on the variety, this wonderfully versatile, clumpforming native with glossy, grasslike leaves grows up to a metre tall. It makes a striking feature when mass planted or used as edging. Its fountain-like foliage also looks great spilling over the side of a pot. Tolerant of drought, wind, frost, sun and shade, it grows well anywhere.

Mondo grass

This hardy, evergreen perennial forms dense mounds up to 30cm tall and 10-15cm wide. Happy in full sun or part shade, it’s ideal for defining borders and edges, planting between pavers or mass grouping under trees, and is low maintenance once established.

LET’S TALK ABOUT TAX

AUSTRALIAN TAXATION OFFICE ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER TIM LOH ANSWERS ALL THE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS ABOUT LODGING YOUR TAX RETURN THIS YEAR

Tax time is right around the corner. And whether you’re employed as a tradie, you’re a sole trader or running a company or trust, you’ll no doubt have some questions about what you can and can’t claim in your next return. Here to help is Tim Loh, Assistant Commissioner at the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), to explain your obligations at tax time. With tradespeople and the construction industry in mind, we will

drill into the details of buying assets for your business, the records that you need to keep when claiming deductions, explain decline in value (depreciation) and help you understand personal services income.

And, if you’re one of the five million people who worked at least some of the time from home during the 2022/2023 tax period, then Tim’s explanation of recent changes to calculating your work-from-home deductions is essential reading.

QWhat are the general rules to keep in mind when claiming a deduction? Do the rules differ if I’m running a business or if I am an employee?

AIf you’re a business owner, you can claim a tax deduction for most expenses you incur in carrying on your business if they are directly related to earning your assessable income. When claiming a business expense, there are three golden rules to remember.

1 The money must have been spent for your business (not a private expense).

2 If it is for a mix of business and private use, you can only claim the portion that is related to your business.

3 You must have a record to prove it. If you’re an employee and you’re

claiming a deduction, again there are three golden rules to remember.

1 You must have spent the money yourself and were not reimbursed.

2 The expenses must directly relate to earning your income.

3 You must have a record to prove it (such as a receipt).

QFor business owners who can claim home-based business expenses, what is the difference between running expenses and occupancy expenses? When can you claim both?

AIf you operate one or more businesses from home, you may be able to claim the business-use portion of expenses you incur which relate to the use and ownership of your home. This includes the following: Running expenses: expenses related to the use of facilities within the home, including electricity, gas, stationery, computer consumables, phone and internet usage, and the decline in value of assets.

Occupancy expenses: expenses relating to the ownership or use of your home, including mortgage interest or rent, council rates, land taxes and home insurance premiums. You can claim both running expenses and occupancy expenses if you have

an area of your home set aside exclusively as a ‘place of business’. If you do not have an area set aside exclusively as a ‘place of business’, you may still be entitled to claim a portion of your running expenses. However, keep in mind that you may not be able to claim occupancy expenses if personal services income (PSI) rules apply to the income of your business. (See PSI question, opposite page.) Be aware that you may have to pay capital gains tax (CGT) when you sell your home if you used part of your home for business purposes.

NOTE To read more, visit ato.gov.au and search ‘homebased business expenses’.

QCan you claim improvements or renovations to the business area of your home? For example, converting a garage into a business-only workshop or client-facing home office.

AYes, there are special rules that may allow you to claim deductions over time for the cost of renovations or improvements done to convert part of your home to a place of business. However, if you do convert your home to a place of business, it will likely impact your entitlement to the main residence exemption for CGT purposes when you sell your home.

NOTE To understand what you may be entitled to claim, the records you need to keep and how this will impact your entitlement to the main residence exemption, visit ato.gov.au and search ‘capital works deductions’.

QWhat advice can you offer to employees and smallbusiness owners to assist with their record-keeping?

AKeeping records is essential, and while the old ‘throw the receipts in the glove box’ trick might have worked for you in the past, my advice would be to keep digital records. This

sure to only claim the business portion of an expense, like car usage Keeping records for tax purposes is essential if you own a business

has many advantages and there are a range of options to choose from. For example, record-keeping software. Some software allows you to securely send, receive and store eInvoices, simplifying your invoicing process and record-keeping.

If you’re an employee or sole trader, the myDeductions tool within the ATO app helps you keep and organise your tax records on the go by simply snapping a photo. You can even upload your records straight to your tax return or to your registered tax agent. This is a real time saver.

Remember to back up your digital records to keep them safe from flood, fire or theft. Generally, you will need to keep records for five years from the date your tax return is lodged.

In addition to keeping your records, the ATO app has several other helpful features and tools you can use to keep on top of your tax and super.

NOTE To learn more, visit ato.gov.au and search ‘digital record keeping’.

QAnd what about Personal Services Income (PSI)?

What is it and how do you know if it applies to you?

AIf more than half the income you’ve received from a contract is a reward for your personal efforts or skills (rather than from the use of assets, the sale of goods or from a business structure), then

your income is classified as personal services income (PSI). You can receive PSI in almost any industry, trade or profession. For example, as a construction worker, engineer, financial professional or IT consultant.

PSI rules help keep a level playing field among individuals. They do this by preventing PSI from being diverted or split with other individuals or entities in an attempt to pay less tax. The PSI rules can affect the deductions you claim and how you report your PSI in your tax return. If you earn PSI, it’s important to check whether these rules apply to you.

NOTE For more information, visit ato.gov.au and search ‘personal services income’, or talk to your registered tax agent or local industry association.

QThere were some recent changes to the way taxpayers calculate their deductions for working-from-home expenses. What can an employee claim when they work from home?

AIf you’re eligible to claim workingfrom-home expenses, you can use either the revised fixed-rate method or the actual cost method to calculate your deduction.

The revised fixed-rate method allows you to claim 67 cents per hour worked from home, which covers your electricity, gas, stationery, computer consumables, internet and phone usage. You can also separately claim a deduction for expenses that are not included in the hourly rate, for example, the decline in value of depreciating assets, such as a laptop or office furniture.

As the name implies, the actual cost method allows you to claim a deduction for the actual expenses you incur as a result of working from home, but this method will probably require a bit more work to calculate your deduction.

You can choose the method that gives you the best outcome, as long as you meet the eligibility and recordkeeping requirements.

NOTE Visit ato.gov.au/home to learn more about which method is right for your circumstances.

QWhat records do employees need to keep to back up their workingfrom-home deduction?

AThe records you need to keep will depend on the method you use. If you’re using the revised fixed-rate method, you’ll need to have a record showing the total number of hours you

If you work from home, there are a couple of ways to approach deductions

worked from home during the income year using a diary, timesheet roster or similar. However, there is a transitional arrangement in place for July 1 2022 to February 28 2023 only, allowing you to keep a representative record (for example, a diary or similar) for a four-week period. For the remainder of the year, you’ll need the full records.

You’ll also need to keep one bill or invoice for each of the expenses you incurred that are covered by the revised fixed rate (such as a phone or internet bill), and records for any other expenses not covered by the hourly rate that you claim separately. For example, if you are claiming the decline in value of depreciating assets, you will need to keep records for the purchase of those assets, and records which show your work-related use.

The actual cost method requires more detailed calculations and records. For example, you will need to know and have records of the cost per unit of electricity and average units used per hour.

NOTE You can read more about the records required at ato.gov.au/home.

QLet’s talk about depreciation and temporary full expensing rules – how does it work?

AIf you’re an employee, you can claim a deduction for tools or equipment if you use them for work purposes. If a tool or item of equipment is only used for work and:

8 bunnings.com.au
Keep track of your business expenditure throughout the year for easier returns

Costs more than $300: you can claim a deduction for the cost over a number of years (that is, decline in value or depreciation)

Costs $300 or less: you can claim an immediate deduction for the whole cost of the work product.

If you are buying depreciable assets for your business, such as tools or machinery, you can immediately

deduct the business portion of the cost of the asset under temporary full expensing rules – but you need to meet the eligibility criteria. The rules apply to new depreciable assets and the cost of improvements to existing eligible assets that are first used or installed by June 30 2023. It also applies to second-hand assets if you’re a small business.

Eligible assets include most assets used in the running of a business, such as tools for use on a worksite, like drills, ladders and toolboxes; equipment, including a fridge or a grill; and shelving and storage.

NOTE Visit ato.gov.au/tradies to learn more.

QFinally, when do you recommend is the best time to lodge your tax return?

AIf you lodge your own tax return, the best time to do it is from late July, when information from employers, banks, health funds and government agencies is automatically pre-filled into your tax return. All you need to do is check your information is correct and add anything that’s missing. We see lots of people making mistakes when they rush to lodge in early July, which can also delay your return from being processed. But if you wait just a few weeks, most of this information should be there waiting for you. Lodging at the end of July will also give you time to find those receipts for work-related expenses since July 1 last year to maximise your tax deductions.

If you use a registered tax agent to lodge your return, they will work with you to determine the best time to lodge it.

WHY POWERPASS IS THE SHARPEST TOOL IN THE KIT

TAP INTO e RECEIPTS ON THE POWERPASS APP TO MAKE YOUR ESSENTIAL BUSINESS RECORD KEEPING A BREEZE

Bunnings Trade PowerPass membership is a well-loved tool for tradies that offers members exclusive benefits, including flexible payment options and much more. Plus, members have access to the free PowerPass App, which has a load of other useful features – including your eReceipts – to make staying on top of business bookkeeping so much easier.

All Australian businesses must keep written records for five years to back up the information they submit in their tax return. Receipts are a big part of proving you spent what you said you did, and how it relates to the operation of your business – if you bought new power tool batteries, for example, or invested in a pair of new work boots.

The PowerPass App lets you keep your business-related receipts digitally – no more stuffing bits of paper in forgotten drawers or the glove box – and in one place. So when you come to complete your tax return (or hand off the required information to your accountant or tax agent), you can find and collate them easily.

Any transactions linked to your PowerPass account can be accessed via the PowerPass portal on the Bunnings Trade website. Receipts are listed by store, date and time of purchase, so they’re easy to find, and you can download and collate them as a PDF to file or share when invoicing clients. And if you need to exchange anything, you’ve always got a record.

WHAT THE TRADIES SAY...

THREE REGULAR POWERPASS MEMBERS SHARE HOW THEIR MEMBERSHIP HELPS RUN AND GROW THEIR BUSINESS

Thomas Taylor

For Thomas, whose northern beaches-based company mainly works on renovations, custom timber work and building decks and pergolas, PowerPass is invaluable for tracking spending across his jobs.

“I’ve been using PowerPass for four or five years now and it’s good for many reasons,” he says. “But most importantly, I can send one of my guys into Bunnings and, when I’m back in the office later on, I’m able to track expenditure on that particular job. That’s such a big help when you’ve got a lot of different projects going on.”

Wrangling surplus materials is also straightforward. “If I don’t end up needing all the timber I’ve ordered, it can be returned – and all the information is there, which makes the process so simple.”

Checking prices and stock is another great time-saver. “I often jump on the app to look at pricing as well as to check stock – that’s especially helpful if you’re looking for something a bit specialised. And you can find out where that stock is if it’s not in your local store,” he says.

Brodie Young

Based on the Mornington Peninsula, Brodie’s main focus is landscape design and creating outdoor rooms, with the occasional renovation project.

“All of these jobs require many visits to Bunnings, and plenty of long nights spent scrolling the PowerPass App for products and answers to our design quandaries,” he says.

The app, says Brodie, is a great tool to have in the bag. “You can instantly look up items, do budgets, see what quantity is where and, best of all, show clients real-life images of what product they’re going to get – things like feature steel screens or a side entrance gate,” he says.

“The fast check-out feature allows me to quickly swing by my local store, grab those extra four bags of cement or a box of screws and shoot straight out again – avoiding a stop at the registers altogether. Another great feature is the ‘similar searched items’ section at the bottom of a product description, which sometimes helps me to think laterally when something isn’t available.”

Brodie often finds himself visiting other Bunnings stores beyond his local one, and says it is easy to switch locations on the app. “While most store layouts are similar, some catch you off-guard,” he explains, adding that the aisle guide and stock location is a “massive plus”.

“The history of receipts and job breakdowns is also a fantastic benefit, allowing me to easily track my progress and the spend on all of my projects,” he adds. “It means I can provide accurate quotes on new, similar jobs based on what my spend was on previous ones. It’s like having a databank I can reference.” instagram.com/brodie_young_design

Natasha Dickins

Little Red Industries, NSW

Natasha is a sole trader with a small, but busy, business that relies on being able to access hardware materials quickly and easily.

“I regularly do home improvements, renovating projects, make furniture and build structures like decks and retaining walls,” says Natasha, who’s also a DIY content producer. “I’m in Bunnings every week, so PowerPass is an essential part of my business. I have the PowerPass card and the app, which makes shopping quicker, saves me cash and keeps a record of all my purchases, so I can always check exactly what I’ve bought, from screw sizes to paint colours.

“It makes exchanges super simple, too – no more fading bits of paper in the glove box! It’s also essential for bookkeeping and invoicing clients, as I can pass on the receipts easily.” Each project Natasha does requires

researching products online, so she finds the list feature invaluable. “Once I’ve found what I need, I either click and collect, or go in store and use the list to find the aisle numbers and use the store map,” she adds. “Then I simply pay with the PowerPass App on my phone, saving me time at the check-out.” littleredindustries.com

SIMPLY BRILLIANT BUYS

UPGRADE YOUR TOOLKIT WITH THESE EOFY OFFERS

The last couple of months of the financial year are the perfect time to review how your business is going and consider purchases that might help your working life run more smoothly in the future. And you may be able to offset a businessessential buy against your tax.

Whether you want to overhaul your old toolkit or expand it with new additions, there are plenty of great deals to be had in store right now. Chippy brothers Tim and Mat share their thoughts on these fantastic new offers.

AEG ‘Fusion’ 18V and ‘Force’ 5.0Ah 10 piece combo kit

This selection of high-quality, heavyduty Fusion tools from AEG will cover a broad range of jobs on site, and comes with three 18V 5.0Ah Force batteries. The Fusion hammer drill delivers up to 141Nm of torque and has an anti-kickback feature for added safety. The compact Fusion 4 mode impact driver with 260Nm lets you choose the right speed and torque to suit the task, including Tek-screw mode to tackle metal fasteners.

Get tough with the Fusion ½" midtorque impact wrench, with 1100Nm breakaway torque. “The torque of the impact wrench is really impressive,” says Tim. “With that tool in particular, torque is really important, because it’s designed for taking out big bolts, so it’s really handy to have.”

The hardworking Fusion SDS+ rotary hammer drill has a special anti-vibration handle to help reduce fatigue if you’re using it on a big job. “That’s obviously very good because using that tool can wear on your body a bit,” adds Tim.

For grinding and cutting tasks, you can’t go past the Fusion 125mm angle grinder, with safety features including anti-kickback, an electronic disc brake and a dead man paddle switch. Adding to the round-up of cutting tools is the durable but lightweight Fusion 184mm circular saw, which will cut up to 65mm deep, and the Fusion reciprocating saw, with a stroke length of 32mm and orbital action for fast, aggressive cuts into timber.

The versatile 18V brushless multitool can be used for all sorts of jobs, with a tool-free blade change to make switching between tasks quick and easy. Working on gloomy afternoons or in dark corners? Light up with the 3200lm 18V spotlight, featuring three lighting modes and a 30m beam. Completing the collection is the 18V worksite blower and inflator/deflator, which has a three speed fan for easy end-of-day cleanups, and handy nozzles for use on inflatables such as air mattresses.

DeWALT ‘XR’ 18V 5.0Ah brushless 9 piece Li-ion combo kit

Here’s a kit that will help you take on plenty of tasks. “A lot of the tools are quite compact and lightweight,” says Tim. “Obviously, working with them all day, the lighter the tools, the more you can use them.” For example, the XR Atomic 18V brushless hammer drill driver, with 65Nm of torque and a 15-position torque control to handle screw-driving into multiple materials. And the XR 18V brushless 3 speed impact driver, which offers PrecisionDrive mode for extra screwdriving control. With up to 205Nm of torque, it’s a fast operator with heavy applications and has a ¼" drop-in bit holder for speedy one-handed changes. “They didn’t sacrifice on power either,” adds Mat. “I think the impact driver had more torque than some of the other tools we picked up, so they’re quite powerful, too.”

The Atomic SDS+ 18V brushless rotary hammer delivers 1.4J of impact energy in a lightweight, ergonomically designed package. Use it for drilling anchors and fixing holes into concrete, brick and masonry from 4mm to 16mm.

Next out of the box is the Atomic XR 18V brushless reciprocating saw, with a cutting capacity of up to 90mm and a tool-free blade clamp for fast blade changes. If you need to rip, cross cut or bevel wood and other construction materials, turn to the XR 18V 184mm brushless circular saw, which will give you a cut depth of up to 64mm.

The 18V brushless 3 speed oscillating multi-tool delivers a range of cutting and sanding tasks and lets you select the speed setting, with up to 20,000rpm of power and a

patented Quick-Change accessory system. “I thought the multi-tool was really impressive with the quick change blade,” says Tim. “I thought that was a cool feature. I hadn’t seen that before.”

Featuring a no-load speed of 9000rpm, the XR 18V 125mm brushless angle grinder gives you extended working time. It has an electronic clutch to reduce the kickback reaction in case of a pinch or stall.

Rounding out the collection is the compact and lightweight

AEG ‘Fusion’ lawnmower kit

There’s much to love about a battery-powered lawnmower. “You don’t have to worry about mixing fuel,” says Tim. “Or running out of it!” adds Mat. The Fusion 2 x 18V 6.0Ah 18" lawnmower has the latest in AEG’s advanced brushless motor technology, operating on two 18V batteries running simultaneously (in series) for excellent cutting power.

“One thing I liked about the lawnmower was that it looks cool, but it has a steel base, which makes it quite durable,” says Tim. The reinforced handles can be folded down for storage when the job’s finished. And its 7-position height adjustment feature means you can achieve a short lawn trim or longer cut with minimal fuss.

“It’s also a lot lighter than a petrol lawnmower, so is a bit easier to move around,” says Mat. “I carry my mower from the shed to the lawn – I’ve got a battery one so I can just pick it up, whereas the petrol one is a bit too heavy.”

Choose from side throw, mulching or catching modes, with a side throw shoot, mulching plug and 50L catching bag included in the kit, along with two Force 18V 6.0Ah batteries and two standard chargers, to start turning rough grass into smooth, lovely lawn.

DeWALT double bevel slide compound mitre saw and stand

This package brings you the 305mm (12") double bevel slide compound mitre saw and mitre saw stand A heavy-duty, solid piece of kit, it produces an excellent cutting performance from small profiles right up to construction timbers of 110mm x 303mm. A blade diameter of 305mm delivers a maximum depth of cut of 170mm, and it has a bevel capacity of 49/49 degrees and a mitre capacity (right/left) of 60/50 degrees. The XPS shadow line cut indicator assists with precise blade alignment. “This helps you cut more accurately, especially if you’re doing a mitre or something like that,” says Tim. “It’s a really cool feature.”

Built to last, this mitre saw has a large, dual sliding fence to give maximum support when cutting large materials at any angle or combination of angles. The blade speed is adjustable from 1900rpm to 3800rpm via an electronic speed control, allowing you to set the cutting speed to suit when you are working with materials other than wood, and a dust control and deflection feature to help keep the cutting area clear. Team it with the stand: It has a generous 1.7m beam which extends to support material up to 3.83m in length and 227kg in weight.

Makita 18V brushless 9 piece combo kit

“Tim uses Makita every day so he’s a big fan,” says Mat. “I’ve got a few Makita tools too – they’re always reliable.” The company created its 18V Lithium-ion cordless tool category in 2005; today’s LXT 18V range has all the benefits of Makita’s long experience of efficient, brushless technology in a convenient cord-free package. They’ve sorted through the world’s largest 18V cordless tool line-up for nine tools essential for anyone who knows their way around a worksite.

First on the list is the 18V brushless heavy duty compact hammer driver drill, which offers tough aluminium gear housing, mechanical 2 speed gearing with all-metal gear construction, and 60Nm max lock torque. It has a single sleeve keyless chuck and LED light for working in darker spaces. Pair it with the lightweight and compact 18V brushless impact driver, with its 170Nm of max fastening torque and high rotational speed for a quick result.

The 18V 125mm brushless slide switch angle grinder is your friend when it comes to tackling concrete: it has a deep concrete-cutting capacity at 20mm. “The deeper a smaller angle grinder will cut through concrete is very handy,” says Tim. “It saves you getting the big nine inch out.”

The 18V 165mm brushless circular saw can slice through suitable materials of up to 57mm, with a bevel capacity of up to 50 degrees. It has up to 5000rpm no-load speed and an innovative automatic torque drive, which increases torque to help push through any cut. The lightweight size of the 18V brushless compact reciprocating saw is a boon when operating in tight spaces, while a counterweight feature helps reduce vibration for less fatigue when working for long periods. A 22mm stroke length at 3100spm delivers fast cutting speed. Smooth operators will like the 18V 82mm mobile planer, with its

14,000rpm motor and planing-depth adjustment knob to give cutting depths of up to 2mm. A clever fan design helps with ejecting chips away. Fine-tune the job with the 18V random orbital sander. With three speed settings – 7000, 9500 and 11,000 – it deals with removing material quickly, while the 2.8mm random orbit action is designed for fast sanding without leaving telltale swirls on your treasured piece.

“Usually, not too many of these 9-piece kits come with a planer,” comments Mat. “That’s a big bonus, especially if you’re a carpenter or you work with timber.” Adds Tim: “I thought the sander was a good little addition as well.”

Once you’re done for the day, clean up in no time with the 18V blower and 18V mobile vacuum

cleaner. Even with attached battery, this efficient blower pulls just over 2kg, while the variable speed trigger and 3-stage air volume settings let you easily direct the clean-up. Easy to manoeuvre, the vacuum has powerful suction and a 650ml dust container with filter for a fast cleaning fix.

Your new tools need power, so the combo kit also comes with two 18V 5.0Ah batteries – which have a useful gauge that indicates how much charge is left – and a single port rapid charger, which can charge a Li-ion 5.0Ah battery in just 45 minutes. The clever charger also determines the optimum charging method by gathering information from the battery’s memory chip. Finally, tidy up your tools with a handy tool bag. Its large, deep main pocket lets you quickly find what you’re looking for.

BUNNINGS MAKES LIFE EASIER FOR TRADIES WITH A BATTERY TRADE-IN OFFER AND THE HANDY POWERPASS APP

Battery trade-in offer

Trade in your old 18V power tool battery for $50 off a new battery twin pack

We love a trade deal – and we love it more when the impact is kinder on the environment. So we’re predicting that our Battery Trade-In offer for this tax time will be a winner.

All you have to do is bring your old 18V power tool battery to the Tool Shop Desk at your local Bunnings store, trade it in and get $50 off selected twin-pack batteries: choose a 5.0Ah battery twin pack from Makita, AEG, DeWALT, Bosch Blue or Metabo,

or a Hikoki Multivolt 18/36V 5.0/2.5Ah battery twin pack. You don’t have to stick to the same brands; for example, you could trade in a Makita battery for a Makita twin pack, or bring in an old Makita battery and go home with an AEG twin pack. In fact, you can trade in any 18V battery, even if the brand isn’t stocked at Bunnings.

The offer is for one battery per transaction: you’ll receive $50 off each new twin pack for every 18V battery you trade in. And, if your preferred

battery isn’t available in your local store, Bunnings can process a special order for you or direct you to a store in the area that has stock on hand.

While you’re in store, why not drop off any end-of-life household batteries at the battery recycling unit? Bunnings’ national battery recycling program has been running since November 2021. For more about the scheme and which batteries are accepted, check online at bunnings. com.au/recycle-batteries.
