uede tomar un avión y desplazarse cientos o miles de millas, dar la vuelta al mundo simplemente tomar una mochila, una cantimplora y visitar el parque natural más cercano a su ciudad, no importa el lugar, lo importante es conocer.

A lo largo de las ediciones de Mi Tierra, que está punto de cumplir dos años, hemos propuesto muchos y maravillosos lugares, urbanos, rurales, cerca del mar, en las montañas, en los lagos y hasta nos atrevimos a proponerles en esta edición, una visita a los lugares “místicos” más conocidos o más famosos del mundo, aunque podemos pecar por olvidarnos de más de uno, creemos no equivocarnos y seguimos las sugerencias de muchos sitios de Internet y de expertos en turismo que nos ayudaron a decidir los destinos.

Y es que las ofertas turísticas tanto en Bolivia, como en el exterior son tan variadas que están al alcance de cualquier persona que tome la sabia decisión de aprovechar al máximo sus vacaciones, se suba a un avión, monte un tren, se suba a un bus o llene el tanque de su vehículo y cambie su perspectiva del planeta, porque si hay algo para lo que sirven los viajes es precisamente para mostrarnos que la geografía no se termina en el patio de nuestra casa o en la calle de nuestro barrio, si no que es tan amplia que algunos, por supuesto respetando la capacidad adquisitiva, se aventuraron a realizar “paseos espaciales”, lo que nos demuestra que las ganas por conocer son ilimitadas y sólo dependen de cuan lejos nos propongamos llegar.

Felizmente, tanto el país como los vecinos, Argentina, Chile, Brasil y Perú, cuentan con destinos turísticos tan atractivos como económicos, tal el caso de Salta, Tucumán y todo el resto del noroeste argentino, que además de sus bellísimos paisajes ofrece una gran variedad culinaria y una inigualable propuesta de vinos. Chile con sus desiertos y sus larguísimas costas es siempre una opción que no se debe dejar de considerar, más aún si se cuenta con vuelos casi diarios de prestigiosas aerolíneas como LAN ó TACA, que además enlazan la atractiva capital peruana, Lima, con el norte del país andino, teniendo como principal atractivo el milenario Cuzco, destino casi obligado para el viajero.

En Brasil, la oferta es tan grande que se podría cerrar los ojos y apuntar con un dedo a cualquier punto del gran país amazónico y con seguridad se elegiría un lugar espléndido en la selva, los miles de kilómetros de costas transparentes y cálidas en el Atlántico ó los acogedores lugares del sur brasileño tan apasionantes que dan ganas de quedarse para siempre.

En fín, como decimos en el título, lo importante es conocer el mundo, el lugar se presentará ante nuestros ojos como un regalo de Dios, de la naturaleza y del ingenio del hombre.

Gracias por llevarnos consigo en su viaje y que tenga un año 2009 como usted realmente lo sueña.

The place does not matter, what is importan is the adventure

Y

ou can take an airplane and travel hundreds or thousands of miles, even go around the world or just strap a backpack to your back, a canteen and go explore a natural park close to your city, the destination does not matter, what is important is the adventure.

Through the editions of Mi Tierra, which is about to celebrate its second anniversary, we have proposed a variety of marvelous destinations: urban, rural, by the seashore, in the mountains, along lakes and now we dare to bring you in this issue a list of the best known or most famous mystical locations in the world. We know that we will have omitted some places, but we researched the subject on the internet and conducted with travel experts and we feel we are mostly right in selecting these ten destinations.

The tourist attractions of Bolivia, as well as those outside our borders, are so varied and are within reach of anyone who makes the wise decision to take advantage to the maximum of their vacations by getting on an airplane, train, or a bus or just fill the tank of their vehicle and change their perspective of the planet; because if there is something travel is good for it is exactly to show us that there is an entire world out there beyond our front door or our neighborhood. It is so big that some people with the financial resources have even booked trips to outer space, which shows us that the desire to explore is limitless and only depends on our ability to set our goals and our drive to achieve them.

Fortunately, our country as well as our neighbors, Argentina, Chile, Brazil and Peru, all have tourist destinations that are not only beautiful but also inexpensive, as is the case of Salta, Tucuman and the whole North of Argentina; which not only offer spectacular scenery but a wide culinary variety and a large variety of wines to delight the pallet. Chile, with its endless coastline is always an option that should be considered, especially since there are daily connections on prestigious airlines such as LAN and TACA, which also link us to the Peruvian capital Lima. Cusco is a must see destination for all tourists that visit the region and especially the neighboring Andean country.

In Brazil, the destinations are so endless that you can almost close your eyes and point anywhere on the map of this great country and you will surely find a splendid place in the jungle or along the thousands of kilometers of coastline bathed by the clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean or the pampas of Southern Brazil that are so welcoming that you feel like staying forever.

Anyway, as we say in the title, what is important is the adventure and to see the world. The new sites will appear before our eyes as gift from God, nature and man´s ingenuity.

Thank for taking us along on your travels and may 2009 be the year you have dreamt with.

persona”. Pirámides y templos maravillosos ocupan la lista de los lugares místicos más famosos del planeta, aquí les presentamos diez de ellos, sin pretender que esta sea una selección definitiva o científica, es un simple acercamiento a monumentos de gran valor sentimental para mucha gente.

The 10 most Mystical Places in the World pyramids and exotic temples head the list of the most famous mystical places on earth; we have listed ten below, which we do not intend to be a definitive list by any means, but just a list of majestic places that have a lot of sentimental value for many people.

La Meseta de Giza

Located twenty kilometers southeast of the city of Cairo, Egypt; where 4,600 years ago three great pyramids were built during the IV dynasty. Giza is part of the great necropolis of Memphis. Each of the three great pyramids had a name which designated the necropolis around it. Khufu is the one belonging to the horizon, Great is Khafre, Menkaure is Divine. During the reign of Khufu the Giza Plateau reached its maximum relevance. The pyramids that guard the tombs of the pharaohs formed part of a vast funerary complex, with temples, other tombs and smaller pyramids.

Situada unos veinte kilómetros al sudoeste del centro de El Cairo lugar donde hace unos 4.600 años se erigieron las tres grandes pirámides de la Dinastía IV. Giza forma parte de la gran necrópolis de Menfis. Cada una de las tres grandes pirámides tenía su propio nombre, que designaba también a la necrópolis que la circundaba. El horizonte de Keops, Ke Kefrén es grande y Micerino es divino. Durante el reinado de Keops fue cuando la meseta de Giza alcanza gran relevancia. Las pirámides que custodiaron los restos de los faraones formaban parte de amplios complejos funerarios, con templos, otras tumbas, y pirámides menores.

Es un monumento neolítico, tipo Cromlech, de la Edad del Bronce situado cerca de Amesbury en Wiltshire, Gran Bretaña, unos trece kilómetros al norte de Salisbury. Stonehenge está conformado por grandes bloques de piedra distribuidos en cuatro circunferencias concéntricas. Éste encierra una estructura piecon forma herradura construida por pie indras de arenisca del mismo color, en su in terior permanece una losa de arenisca micácea conocida como «el Altar». Todo el conjunto está rodeado por un foso circular que mide 104 m de diámetro. Cerca se halla la «Piedra del Sacrificio». Está compuesto de un gran círculo de grandes megalitos cuya construcción se fecha hacia el 2500 A. C.

Is a Neolithic monument from the Bronze Age located near Amesbury in Wiltshire, Great Britain, thirteen kilometers north of Salisbury. One of the most famous prehistoric sites in the world, Stonehenge is composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones and sits at the centre of the densest complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred burial mounds. Archaeologists had believed that the iconic stone monument was erected around 2500 B.C.; however one recent theory has suggested that the first stones were not erected until 2400-2200 BC, whilst another suggests that bluestones may have been erected at the site as early as 3000 BC

Es un conjunto de alineamientos megalíticos de Francia. Es el monumento prehistórico más extenso del mundo. Está situado al norte y en las afueras del pueblo del mismo nombre, junto al Golfo de Morbihan (departamento de Morbihan, Bretaña). Está incluido en el patrimonio histórico de Francia. Los menhires de Carnac fueron levantados durante siel Neolítico en un proceso de si glos de duración, entre el 4500 y seel 2500 A.C, por comunidades se dentarias que vivían en grandes casas de madera y barro y practicaban la agricultura y la ganadería. El papel de Carnac como asentamiento tiene una antigüedad de 6000 años, constituyendo el enclave arqueológico más viejo de toda Europa. Los alineamientos de Carnac totalizan unos 4000 menhires, repartidos en 40 hectáreas de superficie y 4 km de longitud.

Carnac is famous as the site of more than 3,000 prehistoric standing stones. The stones were hewn from local rock and erected by the pre-Celtic people of Brittany. Local tradition claims that the reason they stand in such perfectly straight lines is that they are a Roman legion turned to stone by Merlin.

The Carnac stones were erected during the Neolithic period which lasted from around 4500 BC until 2000 BC. The precise date of the stones is difficult to ascertain as little dateable material has been found beneath them, but 3300 BC is commonly attributed to the site's main phase of activity. One interpretation of the site is that successive generations visited the site to erect a stone in honor of their ancestors.

La isla es en sí misma es un museo al aire libre, llena de moáis (estatuas de piedra monolítica), con más de 1.000 existentes (aproximadamente) en toda la Isla de Pascua. La mitología de la Isla de Rapa Nui presenta características únicas; producto de que esta isla es la más aislada de las islas polinésicas. En Rapa Nui la mitología costambién ha desarrollado una cos explimovisión particular, que ha llevado a sus habitantes a expli caciones muy singulares sobre la creación del hombre y de su territorio. Entre los mitos más importantes encontramos el de la llegada del pueblo rapanui desde el continente de Hiva, el culto al dios Make-Make, que está representado en Rapa Nui como el creador del mundo, y el posterior culto al Tangata Manu (hombre pájaro).

The entire island is an open air museum full of moais (stone monoliths), with over 1,000 scattered throughout Rapa Nui. The mythology of Rapa Nui has unique characteristics; as a consequence of its isolation as the most distant of the islands of polynesia. In Rapa Nui the mythology also developed a unique vision of the cosmos which includes an explanation for the creation of man and their territory. Among the myths of Rapanui are the legends of the lost continent of hiva, the cult to the god make-make who is venerated as the creator of the world and the cult to Tangata manu, the bird man.

Es un monumento de las Ruinas Arqueológicas de Tiwanaku, Bolivia. Es conocido a nivel mundial como la mayor muestra del grado de perfección que alcanzó la cultura, tanto por el arte, como por la simbología que atesoran sus bajos relieves. Este hermoso portal lítico -trabajado en un solo bloque de piedra andesita de aproximadamente 10 toneladas de peso no fue, en el pasado, una pieza aislada sino, más bien, parte de una edificación mayor que pudo ubicarse en la cima de la Pirámide de Akapana o en el mismo conjunto del denominado templo de Kalasasaya, donde existen varias piezas del mismo material del portal andino.

Is a monument located in the archeological ruins of Tiahuanaco, Bolivia. It is known worldwide as an example of the high quality achieved by this culture in stone carving. It is appreciated for its bass relieves and iconography. It is a beautiful stone portal carved out of a single block of stone, weighing over 10 tons and was part of a larger building complex and could have been located atop the pyramid of Akapana or in the temple of Kalasasaya, where several similar stones have been identified. Tiahuanaco flourished between 1500 B.C. and 800 A.D.

Es una estupa budista relacionada con la tradición Mahāyāna, y es el monumento budista más grande del mundo. Está ubicado en la provincia Java Central de Indonesia, 40 kilómetros al noroeste de Yogyakarta. Fue construido entre los años 750 y 850 por los soberanos de la dinastía Sailendra. El nombre puede derivar del sánscrito "Vihara Buddha Ur", que se traduce como "el templo budista en la montaña". Is a Buddhist stupa related to the Mahāyāna tradition. It is the largest Buddhist monument in the world. It is located 40 kilometers from Yogyakarta in the province of Central Java in Indonesia. It was built between the years 750 and 850 A.D. by the rulers of the Sailendra dynasty. The name is derived from the Sanskrit "Vihara Buddha Ur", which translates to “the temple of the Buddha on the mountain”. The monument consists of six square platforms crowned by circular platforms and is decorated by 2,672 bas relief panels and 504 statues of Buddha.

En el oeste de la India, en el estado de Maharashtra, existe un lugar escondido en medio de las montañas de Charanandri. Ellora, uno de los santuarios más excepcionales de Asia. Emplazado entre cascadas y riachuelos, se levanta un conjunto de 34 cuevas-templo excavadas en la roca hace más de mil años. Pero sin duda, los templos más interesantes del emplazamiento son los hinduistas, y entre ellos la joya de Ellora, el templo de Kailash -la morada de placer-, del mismo nombre que la montaña más sagrada del Himalaya, lugar santo de peregrinación para los tibetanos.

Located in western India in the state of Maharashtra, there is a hidden place in the mountains of Charanandri. Ellora is one of the most exceptional sanctuaries in Asia. Hidden between mountain stream and waterfalls, lies a complex of 34 temple-caves carved over 1,000 years ago into the rock.

Without a doubt the most interesting temple, and the jewel of Ellora is the Hindu temple of Kailasa or Kailasanatha Temple, is the unrivaled centerpiece of Ellora. This gargantuan structure – designed to recall Mount Kailash, the abode of Lord Shiva – looks like a freestanding, multi-storeyed temple complex, but it was carved out of one single rock, and covers an area double the size of Parthenon in Athens

Ellora Caves

Es uno de los tesoros arqueológicos más importantes del mundo y seguramente el mayor complejo religioso jamás construido. Es el mayor complejo dedicado a las deidades hindúes fuera del territorio de la India. Ubicado en la Ciudad de Siem Riep, Reino de Camboya, fue el centro político y religioso del antiguo Imperio Jemer. Abarca cer cerca de 200 km², pero sus límites reales trascienden las fronteras de Camboya hacia Tailandia y Laos, en cuyos territorios se encuentran vestigios de templos y de la actividad política, religiosa y cultural del antiguo imperio.

Dentro del inmenso complejo, el principal templo es el Angkor Wat, el templo más grande del mundo y el mejor conservado de todos los que integran el complejo.

Is one of the most important archeological treasures in the world and the largest religious complex ever built. It is located near the city of Siem Riep, Cambodia, and was the political and religious center of the ancient Khmer Empire. It covers an area of 200 square kilometers, but its influence transcended the borders of Cambodia and reached into Thailand and Laos, in whose territories vestiges of temples and the political and reli religious activity of the Khmer Empire remain today. Within the huge complex, the main temple is Angkor Wat, the largest temple in the world and the best preserved of the entire complex.

Es el mayor templo de su clase en toda la República Popular de China. Fue construido en el año 1420 y tanto la dinastía Ming como la Qing lo utilizaron para rogar por las cosechas (en primavera) y dar las gracias al cielo por los frutos obtenidos (otoño). Desde el año 1998 está considerado como Pa Patrimonio de la Hu Humanidad por la UNESCO. Está situado en el parque Tiantan Gongyuan, al sur de la ciudad de Pekín. El Templo del Cielo es en realidad un conjunto de edificios: al norte se sitúa el Salón de Oración por la Buena Cosecha; al sur, el Altar Circular y la Bóveda Imperial del Cielo. El conjunto está rodeado de una muralla interior y otra exterior formadas por una base rectangular que significa la tierra y rematadas con formas redondeadas para simbolizar el cielo.

Is the mayor temple in the entire people´s Republic of China. It was built in 1420 and was utilized by the Ming and Qing Dynasties to invoke the blessings of heaven for a good harvest in the springtime and to give thanks for the harvest in the fall. Since 1998 it has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It is located in Tiantan Gongyuan Park in the south of Peking.

The Temple of Heaven is a complex consisting of several buildings: The Hall of Prayers for Good Harvest, the Circualr Altar, and the Imperial Vault of Heaven. The entire complex is surrounded by an interior and exterior wall in the shape of a rectangle which signifies the earth.

risionera entre el mar y las faldas de un anfiteatro natural de cumbres que se levantan a espaldas de la ciudad, yace uno de los más espectaculares lugares de la zona costera del norte de Chile, cuyas cálidas playas ideales para el baño de mar y sol, contrastan con la aridez del desierto de Atacama que la rodea. Iquique, es la ciudad donde nunca llueve, ni una gota de agua en todo el año, pero derrama a borbotones la diversión que no tiene límite de tiempo, puesto que la urbe no duerme.

Y ahí está, la ciudad histórica que crece arrinconada por el cerro y custodiada por el mar. Impresiona. Enamora. Muchos se sorprenden de no haberla visitado antes porque hay bastante por ver y disfrutar. Primero hay que acomodarse lo mejor posible, ya sea en un hotel de clase mundial, porque los hay, o en un albergue más modesto, pero no por ello menos limpio y generoso.

Un poco de protector solar y a caminar: el parque temático Cavancha se presenta como una buena opción para estirar las piernas. Después puede organizar su agenda, salir a almorzar y dormir la siesta, institución iquiqueña imposible de abolir. Así de estimulado y relajado ¿Está listo para el recorrido posterior?

Antes del paseo, un poco de geografía e historia. Iquique es una ciudad del norte grande de Chile, capital de la I Región de Tarapacá, que se encuentra localizada a 1.845 kilómetros de Santiago, a 356 kilómetros de la frontera con Perú y a 265 de la de Bolivia. Su clima templado que se caracteriza por una temperatura promedio de 18°C. hace agradable la estadía al visitante.

La ciudad de Iquique, que en lengua originaria significa “donde duermen las aves y los lobos”, es la capital de la I Región. Pertenecía a Perú antes de la Guerra del Pacífico. Fue el 23 de noviembre de 1879 cuando el ejército chileno logró conquistarla y desde ese momento la ciudad, que comenzó a embellecerse por el éxito de la explotación salitrera y la pesca comercial, no dejó de crecer.

Hoy, no sólo es la ciudad más grande e importante del norte de Chile, sino también una de las más bellas de este país. La decisión política de convertir a Iquique en Zona Franca (hoy allí funciona la renombrada “Zofri”) le otorgó un crecimiento económico que impulsó la creación de industrias acordes a las nuevas necesidades de la ciudad.

Before your city tour, some geography and history. Iquique is located in the north of Chile and is the capital of the First administrative Region of Tarapaca. It is located 1,845 kilometers north of Santiago and 356 kilometers south of the border with Peru and 265 kilometers from the border with Bolivia. Its climate is mild and has an average temperature of 18°C. which makes for an agreeable visit.

los Verdes and Huayquique. The extensive seaside boulevards and boardwalks, theme parks, and kilometers of warm sand are ideal for sunbathing and swimming and also offer a large variety of water sports and boat excursions.

Actually, Iquique is considered one of the best places to practice wind gliding. Besides the absence of rain, the cliffs along the coast are excellent for launching hand gliders. Other sports that can be enjoyed on weekends by the local residents are cross country 4 x 4, sailing, kayaking, surfing and windsurfing.

For those that wish to tour the city and visit historic buildings, they can visit the Teatro Municipal, which is over 100 years old, and has a rich history which includes ghosts. Also visit the Torre del Reloj (Clocktower), built in 1877 as a symbol of Iquique and the Palacio Astoreca, built in 1904,which has witnessed the most important events of the last century.

The surrounding Highland plateau, with an altitude of over 4,000 meters above sea level at the foothills of the Andes, with its native flora and fauna, and full of beautiful landscapes.

You can also discover the great salt flats, and volcanoes which beckon you to explore.

Its vibrant night life is among the many peculiarities that Iquique has. There are dozens of first rate restaurants, bars, pubs, night clubs, discos, and all sort of adult entertainment.

For those that want to try their luck, there is the City Casino which offers high level entertainment. The night ends quickly, at around five in the morning, when the sun rises welcoming a new day.

En efecto, Iquique es considerada una de las mejores zonas del mundo para practicar parapente. Y es que además de la falta de lluvias, el farellón costero largo y abrupto, se presta para el despegue. Otros deportes que le disputan los maridos a las dueñas de casa iquiqueñas los fines de semana, son los tours con camionetas 4 por 4, motos de agua, veleros, kayaks, lanchas y hasta la sencilla tabla de surf o de windsurf.

Para los que deseen darse una vuelta por la ciudad para visitar edificios históricos, pueden acudir al Teatro Municipal, con más de cien años a cuestas, misma que tiene historias hasta de fantasmas. Del mismo modo la Torre del Reloj, construida en 1877 es un símbolo para los iquiqueños, junto al Palacio Astoreca, edificado en 1904, testigo privilegiado de los hechos más relevantes del siglo pasado.

El altiplano circundante a Iquique, a más de cuatro mil metros planos, que yace bajo la cordillera de los Andes, junto a su flora y fauna, amén de los paisajes que la circundan es de una belleza inconmensurable.

Asimismo se descubren salares gigantescos, interminables e inagotables, además de volcanes que invitan a investigar sus entrañas.

Entre las muchas peculiaridades que tiene Iquique, está su intensa vida nocturna. Hay decenas de restaurantes de primer nivel, pubs, bares, discoteques, picadas y sitios de diversión de adultos. Para quienes gustan de tentar la suerte, el Casino de Juegos de la ciudad entrega una serie de opciones del más alto nivel. La noche termina muy temprano, a eso de las cinco de la mañana, cuando el sol ya está invitando a una nueva jornada.

a respiración húmeda que estremece el cuerpo, se entremezcla a momentos con el sonido de las pequeñas olas que levantan los dos remos de madera, dispuestos a cada lado del bote. La sensación visual es increíble.

Verde a la derecha, a la izquierda y abajo. El guía dice que hay que estar atento, puesto que tal vez pueda divisarse una anaconda.

Aunque en la travesía por el Pantanal boliviano en esta oportunidad no pudo observarse a la “boa del agua”, la diversidad de aves, principalmente acuáticas, mamíferos, anfibios y reptiles, entran en escena a medida que se transita uno de los rincones más salvajes e inexplorados de la región.

The visual sensation all around you is incredible: green to the right, green to the left and below you. The guide says to be on the lookout for an anaconda. Even though on this trip through the Bolivian Pantanal we did not see a “water boa”, the diversity of birds, mostly water fowl, mammals, amphibians and reptiles more than made up for it, as we explored one of the most pristine and unexplored wetlands in the area.

Durante el recorrido turístico, las maravillas saltan a la vista.

No es para menos, puesto que el Pantanal boliviano concentra y conserva como ecosistema una gran cantidad de especies de flora y fauna en medio de un paisaje paradisiaco, lo que lo convierte en uno de los hábitats vírgenes más apetecidos del mundo para los visitantes. Sin embargo, el ingreso aguas adentro del Pantanal sobre las márgenes del río Paraguay, tiene límites, puesto que en algunas zonas el pantano es más denso y con sedimento que imposibilita el viaje en bote.

Para los que quieren disfrutar al máximo la experiencia de tener un contacto pleno con la naturaleza, el remar es un reto que se asume desde el encanto del silencio. Sin motores encendidos, los sonidos son exclusividad de las aves. Sin oropel ni lujos, el viaje se transforma en un pasaporte al mundo cinco estrellas cuando los tucanes, de impecables picos naranjas, hacen su vuelo recto a cielo despejado.

Los días se iluminan bien temprano, como si las aves dieran la orden para comenzar. De a poco, el sol baña el suelo tórrido y el pantanal es una invitación irresistible. Por la cuenca alta del río Paraguay puede navegarse mientras por el agua pasean pacúes y pirañas. En las márgenes, expectantes, se acomodan los yacarés.

Pero hay un dato que sorprende: “Las pirañas y los yacarés no atacan; lo peligroso son las abejas”, revela un guía del sitio.

Durante el día las cifras de la temperatura pueden engañar al cuerpo. Es que los 35 grados que registran los termómetros no condicen con las sensaciones. Cuando cae la tarde, llega el turno de la noche que, por lo general, se llena de estrellas. Y ahí, sin velos la vía láctea hace su presentación. Las estrellas brillan como en aquellos sitios donde se desconoce la luz artificial. Involucrarse y dejarse llevar por los olores y los sonidos es parte del asunto.

You can travel through the upper basin of the Paraguay River and see piranhas and pacu swimming in the water. Along the shores of the river, the crocodiles sunbathe. The tour guide gives a surprising fact: “piranhas and crocodiles do not attack; the real danger is the bees”.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has identified it as one of the 200 priority eco-regions that requires conservation on a worldwide level. The Pantanal is a critical habitat for many endangered species that are in danger of extinction such as the Marsh Deer (Blastocerus dichotomus), the Hyacinth Macau (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus), the Giant Otter (Pteronura brasiliensis) and others.

Over 120 species of mammals, 650 species of birds, 90 species of reptiles, 40 species of amphibians, 260 species of fish, 1030 species of butterflies and more than 1650 species of plants live in the Pantanal. The biological diversity of these wetlands in fauna and flora caused the Bolivian government, with the support of the WWF, to designate the entire area as an official Ramsar Convention on Wetlands designated area in 2001, recognizing its importance on an international level.

The Bolivian portion of the Pantanal has an area of 32,000 square kilometers and helps regulate floods and droughts in Eastern Bolivia. The wetlands retain and distribute uniformly the waters of the Paraguay River, acting as a sponge, and also distribute the sediments and nutrients necessary to maintain the high concentration of biodiversity that characterizes the area.

The Bolivian Pantanal is located in the far eastern part of the Department of Santa Cruz and is divided into three areas.

The area around San Matias is located in the Precambrian Shield to the north of the department. It is made of permanent and temporary marshes, lakes, streams, and rivers which flow into Curiche Grande River, which in turn flows into the Paraguay River.

The central zone of the Pantanal is a transitional area between the Precambrian shield and the plains of the Chaco.

It is made up of large lakes among which are Ubera, La Gaiba, Mandiore, and Caceres which are joined to the Paraguay River. Finally the last part of the Pantanal is the marshlands of Otuquis which is located in the extreme southern part of the Department of Santa Cruz and encompasses the Chaco region.

It is formed by the Tucavaca and San Rafael Rivers, which come together to form the Otuquis River, whose waters flow into the Paraguay and Negro River on the Bolivian-Paraguayan border.

Retiene y distribuye uniformemente las inundaciones del Río Paraguay, actuando como una esponja, y con ello también distribuye los sedimentos y nutrientes, necesarios para mantener la alta concentración de biodiversidad que lo caracteriza.

El Pantanal boliviano ocupa la parte más oriental de Santa Cruz y se divide en tres zonas. El de San Matías, situado en el norte de la parte oeste del departamento, en el Escudo Precámbrico. Está compuesto por pantanos permanentes, temporales, lagunas, vertientes, ríos y pequeños cursos fluviales permanentes y temporales cuyas aguas confluyen en el río Curiche Grande, que a su vez desemboca en el río Paraguay.

A su vez, el Pantanal central es una zona de transición entre el que está en el escudo precámbrico y el de la llanura chaqueña. Está compuesta por un sector de grandes lagunas entre las que destacan Uberaba, La Gaiba, Mandioré y Cáceres, que están comunicadas con el río Paraguay. Y por último el Pantanal de Otuquis que está situado al sureste del Departamento de Santa Cruz, mismo que recibe influencias de la región chaqueña. Está formado por el río Tucavaca y San Rafael, que se unen para formar el río Otuquis, el curso del cual desaparece formando los bañados de Otuquis, cuyas aguas desembocan en el río Paraguay y el Río Negro (frontera Bolivia-Paraguay).

HOMBRE Y NATURALEZA

La Asociación Hombre y Naturaleza, organización sin fines de lucro, maneja entre otros proyectos la promoción del Pantanal como destino ecoturístico. Cuenta con el Centro Ecológico “El Tumbador” en Puerto Suárez y el Centro Ecológico “Laguna Algarañaz” en San Matías.

El Centro Ecológico “El Tumbador” implementa desde 1998 hasta la fecha actividades de capacitación, concienciación, educación e interpretación ambiental, así como de promoción y oferta ecoturística en el Pantanal, ecosistema de gran abundancia y diversidad biológica que permite desarrollar actividades socioeconómicas que pueden contribuir al desarrollo sostenible de la región.

Los recorridos identificados y organizados en esta región ofrecen variedad de hábitats dentro de los cuales se encuentran la rica fauna y flora pantanera, que puede ser observada y conocida por quienes deseen apreciar su belleza y diversidad. El Bosque Seco Chiquitano, Palmares, Llanuras Inundables del Pantanal, Bosques Galería, ríos, Lagunas, Bosque Cerrado, Bosque Chaqueño son los hábitats que esperan ser explorados por personas que gusten de entrar en contacto con una naturaleza pródiga y agreste.

La Laguna Cáceres, el Canal Tamengo, el Bosque de El Tumbador, la Cueva de Motacusito, el Cerro Mutún, el Parque Nacional y Área Natural de Manejo Integrado Pantanal de Otuquis son atractivos turísticos naturales de la región que pueden ser visitados y explorados desde este Centro Ecológico. También se ofrecen recorridos por el río Paraguay.

“EL TUMBADOR”

El Centro Ecológico “El Tumbador” se encuentra ubicado dentro del Bosque Seco Chiquitano, sobre un terraplén natural elevado de unos 15 metros sobre el nivel de la orilla de la laguna Cáceres, de la que se tienen magníficas vistas panorámicas. Se encuentra a 6 km de Puerto Suárez por carretera (1,5 km de camino de tierra atravesando el bosque y 4,5 km de carretera asfaltada) y a unos 40 minutos andando, si se toma el camino que bordea una parte de la orilla de la Laguna.

El Centro está compuesto por varias construcciones rústicas. Cuenta con 6 habitaciones tipo albergue, con camas de dos pisos o literas, que cuentan con baño privado, agua caliente (duchas eléctricas) en 4 de ellas, ventiladores y están aisladas de los insectos y otra fauna del bosque por medio de mallas milimétricas en las ventanas. Cuenta asimismo con una oficina (con una pequeña biblioteca) y comedor, que ofrece servicio gastronómico típico de la región.

The Asociación Hombre y Naturaleza, a nonprofit foundation, manages the promotion of the Pantanal as a tourist destination for ecotourism. It manages the Centro Ecológico “El Tumbador” in Puerto Suárez and the Centro Ecológico “Laguna Algarañaz” in San Matías.

The Centro Ecológico “El Tumbador” in existence since 1998, conducts training, and activities to educate and raise awareness of the environment and offers ecotourism in the Pantanal. Part of their activity is to protect the great biodiversity of the ecosystem and promote sustainable economic development that can contribute to the development of the region.

The organized excursions available offer a variety of habitats where the rich fauna and flora of the marshlands can be observed up close by those who want to partake of its beauty and diversity. The Dry Forest of Chiquitos, Palm groves, flooded plains of the Pantanal, woodlands, Chaco forests are the habitats that await exploration by adventurous tourists who want to have close contact with the prolific local wildlife.

Laguna Cáceres, the Tamengo Canal , the Bosque de El Tumbador, the Cave of Motacusito, the Mutún Mountain, the Parque Nacional y Área Natural de Manejo Integrado Pantanal de Otuquis are among the natural tourist attractions the región has to offer visitors and explorers from the confort of the ecological Center. It also offers excursions along the Paraguay River.

“EL TUMBADOR” The Ecological Center “El Tumbador” is located in the Chiquitano Dry Forest, above a natural raised embankment, about 15 meters above the shores of Lake Caceres, from which there are magnificent panoramic vistas. It is 6 km. from Puerto Suarez by land (4.5 km of paved road and 1.5 km of dirt road through the woods) and a 40 minute walk if you take the path that follows the lakeshore.

The center is consists of various rustic buildings. It is modeled on a hostel with six shared bedrooms with bunkbeds, each with a private bathroom, 4 of which have hot water showers (electric), electric fans, and have window screens to keep out the mosquitoes and other flying insects. It also has an office (with a small library) and a mess hall which serve local cuisine.

El paseo tiene una duración aproximada 4 horas. La navegación es entre Bolivia y Brasil, donde puede lograrse avistamiento de caimanes, aves, iguanas. El canal Tamengo, une la laguna Cáceres con el río Paraguay y es una gran alternativa para el recorrido por la laguna en los meses de estiaje. Puede observarse y fotografiarse desde la barca caimanes, multitud de aves acuáticas, iguanas y las nutrias gigantes.

El Recorrido es por tierra en vehículos 4x4 hacia la comunidad de San Juan del Mutún, situada a unos 40 km de Puerto Suárez, en la base del Cerro Mutún. Mientras esté permitido, y si las condiciones lo permiten, se subirá a la cumbre del cerro en el 4x4 (10 km de subida), desde donde se puede obtener una vista panorámica de los alrededores. Pueden observase monos, tucanes, peni, en medio de la vegetación del Bosque Seco Chiquitano. El paseo tiene una duración aproximada de 5 horas.

LAGUNA CÁCERES You can navigate the lake in a six meter long aluminum excursion boat with an outboard motor and a canopy and seats. You have the possibility of seeing birds, mammals, and aquatic plants in a wetland setting. Laguna Caceres, due to its shallowness permits you to take side trips into the many canals that border the lake, where you can see the wildlife up close. The excursions last 3 to 4 hours.

CANAL TAMENGO The excursions last approximately 4 hours. You travel by boat between Bolivia and Brazil, where you can see crocodiles, birds and iguanas. Tamengo Canal links Laguna Caceres with the Parguay River and is a good alternative to excursions on the lake during droughts.

You can observe and photograph from your boat: crocodiles, a great variety of water fowl, iguanas and giant otters.

MUTÚN The excursion by land is in a 4 x 4 vehicle from the community of San Juan del Mutun, located about 40 km from Puerto Suarez, at the base of the Mutun Mountain. While access is unencumbered, and weather permitting, you will climb the mountain on your 4 x 4 vehicle (an assent 10 km), from where you will have a panoramic view of the surrounding area. You will see monkeys, toucans, and large iguanas in the midst of the Chiquitano dry forest. The excursion lasts about 5 hours.

El recorrido tiene una duración aproximada de 3 horas por tierra hacia una cueva llena de vida dentro del Bosque Seco Chiquitano. El paseo se efectúa en 4x4 durante unos 15 Km. hasta llegar a las cercanías de la cueva, desde donde se tiene que caminar entre 10 y 30 minutos.

En el bosque de la comunidad de Motacusito el agua subterránea abrió en la roca un paso de trazado horizontal de una longitud aproximada de 100 metros. En el interior de la cueva vive una variada y peculiar fauna cavernícola que incluye peces, insectos, extraños arácnidos (amblipigios), anfibios y murciélagos.

The excursion consists of floating on a barge down the river and canals to see as much variety of scenery and local wildlife as possible in the Pantanal. Among the main attractions are the giant otters, black howling monkeys, capibara, and aquatic birds of the shores, white heron, toucans, gulls, iguanas, and crocodiles.

You will also experience the local flora which includes varieties of palm trees such as the totai, motacu, and coconuts, as well as local fruit trees such as the ambaibo and extensive aquatic vegetation.

This excursion is for those that have the time to take a leisurely excursion to discover the magic of the Pantanal, by day as well as by night.

You set out at dawn and cross over to the city of Corumba and its suburb Ladario. At the end of the day you stop at a riverside hotel run by fishermen, where you will dine and spend the night in the small town of Porto da Manga. The second day in the morning, after breakfast, you will travel 30 km to parquet Estrada, and from there in a four wheel drive pickup truck, on a small dirt road raised about 4 meters above the flooded plains, where you will observe more crocodiles, capibaras and a multitude of aquatic birds up close.

Se trata de los substitutos artificiales de las raíces naturales de los dientes, fabricados de titanio, a manera de pequeños anclajes con forma de tornillos, que se colocan dentro del hueso maxilar.

Los dientes de reemplazo van unidos a la parte del implante que sobresale a través de la encía.

El concepto de unión de los implantes dentales al hueso maxilar para formar una base segura en reemplazo de las raíces dentales, se desarrolló en la década del sesenta por el profesor Per – Ingvar Barnemark, quién realizó experimentos para estudiar la respuesta de la médula ósea ante diferentes procedimientos clínicos y de traumatología. It is the procedure by which missing teeth are replaced with artificial roots, made out of titanium, by anchoring the screws in the jawbone. The replacement teeth are attached to these anchors that protrude through the gums.

The goal is to provide esthetic and functional alternatives to patients, since the replacement teeth look, feel and function like their natural teeth, which will allow them to recover their self esteem and self confidence since in many cases patients had prosthesis that did not give them the desired comfort, explains the Periodontist and director of the Orest Clinic, Dr. Alejandro Unzueta.

The concept of anchoring the implants in the maxillary bone to create a safe base for replacement teeth was developed in the decade of the seventies by Professor Per-Ingvar Barnemark, who realized experiments to gage the reaction of the bone to different types of implants and clinical procedures. After several studies with animal bones and partial dental prosthesis, the orthopedic surgeon and Swedish scientist, discovered that after awhile the bone affixes strongly to titanium, a metal that permits this process.

Según la Academia Americana de Periodontología, a pesar de que los implantes trajeron satisfacción y una sonrisa confiable a una gran cantidad de personas, no constituyen la solución en todos los casos. En primera instancia lo ideal para el paciente es que hubiera terminado su crecimiento óseo maxilar, es decir, que tenga más de 16 años. También se espera que cuente con salud general y bucal buena y un hueso maxilar capaz de recibirlos. Igualmente es importante que el candidato realice una higiene oral adecuada y responsable, además de cumplir con visitas periódicas al dentista para su control.

El odontólogo general o periodoncista puede ayudar a decidir si los implantes son adecuados para una persona. Recomiendan para tomar esta decisión un previo examen dental completo, en el que se revisará su historia médica y dental, examen cuidadoso de los tejidos bucales y huesos maxilares, control de la forma en que los dientes contactan al morder, toma de radiografías y fabricación de modelos.

WHO IS A SUITABLE CANDIDATE? A general dentist or a periodontist can help you decide if you are a suitable candidate for implants. It is recommended a patient have a complete oral examination before making the decision, and at the same time that they review their complete medical and dental history, take x-rays and bite impressions.

WARNING Persons with diabetes, or uncontrolled high blood sugar, should first get treatment before undergoing surgery. Also patients with osteoporosis or problems fixing calcium should see an endocrinologist and have their metabolism adjusted before undergoing the procedure.

COSTO El costo de un implante dental, es el doble de un prótesis fija convencional, dependiendo de los químicos, el tipo y material que se utilice. Según Unzueta el tratamiento, más la colocación de todas las piezas varía entre 600 y 1000 dólares.

The tooth part of the implants can be attached with titanium, silicone, which is a white metal that permits the treatment to be aesthetically pleasing and natural looking.

QUARANTINE Television reporter Angela Vidal and her cameraman are assigned to spend the night shift with a Los Angeles Fire Station. After a routine 911 call takes them to a small apartment building, they find police officers already on the scene in response to blood curdling screams coming from one of the apartment units. They soon learn that a woman living in the building has been infected by something unknown. After a few of the residents are viciously attacked, they try to escape with the news crew in tow, only to find that the CDC has quarantined the building. Phones, internet, televisions and cell phone access have been cut-off, and officials are not relaying information to those locked inside. EL COSTO DE UNA VALIJA En el último año, todas las grandes aerolíneas estadounidenses pasaron a cobrar el despacho de la primera valija en todos los vuelos internos. El valor promedio es de 15 dólares, pero ese precio aumenta en el caso de la segunda valija. En ese caso, llega a 25 dólares. Por ello, el diario The Wall Street Journal decidió hacer una pequeña investigación para determinar cuál es el costo, para una aerolínea, de despachar una valija.

Tras una serie de charlas con consultores y profesionales del sector, se llegó a un valor que sumaba los costos laborales y el gasto en combustible por el peso. El precio final: 15 dólares. No es sorprendente, entonces, que las aerolíneas hayan tomado ese valor como referencia. No ganan nada con el despacho de la primera valija, pero tampoco pierden nada y salvan los costos que antes tenían que asumir como parte del pasaje.

Pero el tema cambia con la segunda valija, porque el precio estándar allí es de 25 dólares. En ese caso, las aerolíneas estadounidenses estarían obteniendo un interesante margen de ganancia, que permite sumar dólares a su problemática situación financiera. Ni que decir de las terceras valijas, que pueden llegar a ser facturadas a valores por encima de los 100 dólares, siempre en vuelos internos en Estados Unidos.

United, una de las grandes aerolíneas de Estados Unidos, espera facturar 275 millones de dólares al año por los cobros de las primeras y segundas valijas en vuelos internos.

During the last year, all the major airlines in the United States have started charging for shipping the first bag on domestic flights. The average charge is $15, but the price goes up for subsequent bags.

The average cost for the second bag is $25. The Wall Street Journal decided to do a small market survey to determine the cost per airline for shipping luggage.

After consulting with professionals in the area and market consultants, the airlines arrived at a labor cost per shipping a bag and the fuel consumed per weight. The final price was $15. It is not surprising then that airlines have taken that value as a reference.

They do not make a profit on the first bag, but they do not lose either and save the costs that they use to absorb as part of the ticket.

The situation is different with the second bag, because the standard price charged is $25. In this case, the North American airlines make an interesting profit margin, which allows them to add dollars to their troubling financial situation. Not to mention that the third bag is charged at a rate of $100 or more, but only on domestic flights.

United, one of the major airlines in the United States expects to earn $275 million by charging for the first and second bag on domestic flights this year.

With an irreverent humor that defies the clasical standards, Aquirre Lavayen delves into the latrine that incubated the attack on the Bolivian Coastline on the Pacific Ocean. “More than two thousand boats loaded with guano were powered by the wind in their sails. There has never been such a movement of shit on such a grand scale and it has nothing to envy the current shipments of oil” observes Aguirre in the realistic language he uses to treat this subject.

The odyssey of guano, that international tragic comedy is written in an original style. Under the guise of humor, the author explores the causes of the War of the Paqcific between Bolivia and Chile in 1879.

Alejandra Meschwitz Fusión entre ritmos guaraníes con música urbana se unen por primera vez en Ivi Iyambae (Tierra Sin Dueño), un disco producido por Alejandra Meschwitz del que además es su vocalista. Cuenta con la participación de reconocidos DJ como Guerrero, Genova, Proyecto 4 Ojos y Charango que juntos forman ETNIA, una agrupación que dar a conocer un nuevo estilo melódico.

“Es música de exportación de muy buena calidad”, califica Meschwitz al referirse a las interpretaciones melódicas que forman parte del CD, que significó varios meses de elaboración. El esfuerzo de producción se recompensa con la favorable recepción que recibe de la gente que escucha canciones como Avati Arete, Cruceños, Eclipse, Se Ro Pota, Proyecto Cuatro Ojos, Soy, Toborochi, Aborigen, Tumpa y Kandire. ¿Qué ritmos se encuentran? De todo. House, electrónico, tecno y hasta reggaetón, entremezclados con sonidos propios de la cultura guaraní. “El oriente, ha sido y es olvidado por lo que nos propusimos mostrar al público urbano la riqueza cultural de nuestros antepasados, de nuestras costumbres”, relata.

El CD si bien recién está en fase de presentación, puede ser adquirido en la Manzana 1. ETNIA no tiene definido fechas de actuaciones en público, puesto que aún está en tratativas, pero anticipan que muy pronto habrá novedades para los amantes del Tecno con una variable musical muy peculiar.

IVI IYAMBAE - ETNIA A fusion between Guarani rhythms and urban music brought together for the first time in Ivi Iyambae (Tierra Sin Dueño), a CD produced by Alejandra Meschwitz who is also the vocalist.

It includes the participation of renowned DJ´s such as Guerrero, Genova, Proyecto4, Ojos and Charango who together are known as ETNIA, a grouping that produces this new style of music.

“This is very good quality music for export” says Meschwitz, referring to the compositions that are part of her CD, which are the result of several months of work. The production effort has been rewarded with a positive reception from the people that have heard her music, singers such as: Avati Arete, Cruceños, Eclipse, Se Ro Pota, Proyecto Cuatro Ojos, Soy, Toborochi, Aborigen, Tumpa and Kandire.

What rhythms do you find? All sorts. House, electronic, techno and even reggaeton mixed in with the instruments and sounds of the Guarani culture. “The east (ern Bolivia) has always been forgotten or ignored, so we set out to bring to the attention of the urban public the richness of the culture of our ancestors and their customs” she says.

The CD is still in the introductory phase and can be heard at Manzana 1. ETNIA does not yet have a calendar of public performances scheduled, since they are still negotiating, but they expect that soon there will be something new to offer followers of techno music, with a unique new twist.
