El recorrido comienza por los viñedos en la campiña cercana a la ciudad capital. En la localidad El Portillo (a 9 Km. de la ciudad de Tarija) existe una plantación que se denomina Viñas de Oro, donde el visitante no sólo puede observar el proceso de elaboración del vino sino que tiene la oportunidad de experimentar y ser parte activa del cultivo, la poda, el riego y la cosecha, interactuando constantemente con los viticultores para conocer a fondo todo el trabajo que se desarrolla en la producción de vides. Do you fancy a trip through the Chapaco (the name given to the Tarija region) countryside, to get familiar with the grape production and the preparation of the highest wines in the world? Well, here is your boarding pass to enjoy and experience the ‘Wine Trail’, a journey that will allow you to savor the incomparable quality of this Bolivian product.

Tarija offers its visitors an attractive and varied range of trips nearby, sites like the San Jacinto reservoir, the Tajzara lagoons or the Jurina waterfalls, are obligatory stops for the tourist. Likewise, the ‘Wine Trail’ – the main tourist attraction of the town of flowers, another name for the Chapaco capital, due to its fertile lands-, becomes a not to be missed trip for those who wish to understand the real spirit of Tarija. The tour begins in the vineyards in the countryside near to the capital city. In the village of El Portillo (some 9 km from the city of Tarija) there is a plantation called Viñas de Oro (Golden vineyards), where the visitor can not only see the winemaking process but also have the opportunity to experiment and be an active part of the production, the pruning, the irrigation and the harvest, constantly interacting with the viticulturists to better understand all the work that goes into the production of the vines. UN POCO DE HISTORIA

La producción de vino en Tarija tiene muchos años de historia.

Las primeras plantaciones de uvas en Bolivia se desarrollaron en Mizque, y fue en 1584 que el cultivo de la vid llegó a Tarija. El primer registro de una viña tarijeña data de 1606 en la localidad de Entre Ríos.

La uva cultivada se utilizaba para el consumo y la elaboración de vinos con fines litúrgicos, además era parte de la dieta tradicional de los colonizadores.

El desarrollo tecnológico e industrial que permitiría despertar al valle tarijeño como productor de vino y singani llegó recién en 1960, y desde entonces la elaboración del vino de altura ha dotado a Tarija de un atractivo turístico lleno de sabor y aroma.

Por su parte, el Singani, la bebida tradicional de Bolivia, consiste en el destilado de vino natural proveniente de una moscatel de Alejandría de Viñedos de Altura. Su origen data de las épocas coloniales cuando la población de Sinkani, al Sur de Bolivia, inicia la destilación de uva Moscatel de Alejandría para proveer de una bebida de mayor grado alcohólico a las frías minas de Potosí (4.000 m.s.n.m.), ciudad que por su gran actividad minera contaba con una población mayor a la del París en su gran época de auge.

Desde siempre, la autenticidad de aromas obtenida de los viñedos bolivianos de altura es de tal magnitud que, aun después de producido y destilado el vino, se percibe la frescura y fuerte aroma de la variedad de la uva.

Many of the products from these wineries now compete with famous wines from France, Chile and Argentina.

A LITTLE HISTORY Wine production in Tarija has a long history.

The first grape plantations in Bolivia were developed in Mizque, and it was in 1584 that the grapevine crop arrived in Tarija. The first recording of a Tarija wine dates from 1606 in the town of Entre Ríos.

The grapes grown were used for eating and for making wine for religious ceremonies; in addition it formed part of the traditional diet of the settlers.

The technological and industrial advances that allowed the Tarija valley to develop as a wine and Singani producer arrived only in 1960, and since then the elaboration of wine with altitude has blessed Tarija as a tourist attraction full of taste and bouquet.

For its part, Singani, the traditional Bolivian drink, is made from the distillation of natural wine from a muscatel from Alejandra from high altitude vineyards. Its origin dates from colonial times when the population of Sinkani, in southern Bolivia, began the distillation of a Muscatel de Alejandra grape to provide a drink with a higher grade of alcohol for the cold mines of Potosí (4,000 m.a.s.l.), a city that due to its great mining activity had a larger population than that of Paris during its boom years.

From time immemorial, the intensity of the aroma from the Bolivian vineyards at high altitude is of such greatness that, even after producing and distilling the wine, the freshness and strong aroma of the grape variety can be still be sensed.

“Our wines have a good image abroad”

Dejarse envolver por los encantos de un buen vino es cuestión de gustos. Pero detectar la calidad y las características de una determinada reserva requiere de conocimientos específicos sobre el arLuis Fernando te de la vitiTerrazas Salas vinicultura.

Por eso es importante saber qué observar y cómo saborear un vino para distinguir su calidad. Luis Fernando Terrazas, enólogo y organizador del Festival Internacional de Vinos y Quesos que se realiza cada año en Santa Cruz, y que actualmente se encuentra en las puertas de su séptima versión, nos explica algunos pasos esenciales: “Primero es el color. Se puede destacar si se observa el líquido a través de la copa sobre un fondo blanco. El segundo paso se refiere al aroma. Necesariamente debemos generar pequeños movimientos a la copa para poder distinguir los aromas secundarios del vino, porque los primarios son aquellos que se pueden sentir sin ningún movimiento. El tercer paso es la degustación: hay varias formas, porque en la lengua y el paladar existen diferentes sectores que pueden Organizador del Festival destacar el dulce, el ácido o el amargo”, de Vinos & Quesos explica este conocedor de vinos que, con la propiedad de un verdadero experto, nos entrega también algunas observaciones sobre los vinos de altura de Tarija.

“La altura otorga una buena aptitud térmica a los microclimas, y ésa es una de las características que se necesita para obtener una buena cepa”, señala Terrazas, que no puede dejar de destacar la evolución del campo vitivinícola en Bolivia tanto en la calidad de los vinos como en su consumo.

Sin temor a equivocarse, señala que el hecho de que nuestros vinos hayan comenzado a exportarse hace unos cuatro años a mercados europeos y americanos, es una muestra de que el producto boliviano ya puede competir con los vinos de otros países.

Y explica que la promoción que se logra a través de los festivales internacionales ha sido –indudablemente- positiva. “No solamente han hecho que las bodegas se esfuercen por lograr una mejor calidad, sino que han comenzado a surgir vinos varietales, bivarietales y trivarietales; es decir, reservas que dan una muy buena imagen a nuestros vinos para la exportación”, apunta.

Para tener una idea más clara, Terrazas nos explica que los vinos de buena calidad se caracterizan por tener atributos especiales que sólo se consiguen con un periodo de añejamiento o maduración en el que intervienen aspectos tan importantes como las características de las uvas o la madera de las barricas.

The quality of a wine is recognized according to its body, its bouquet and its color. If you wish to understand the magic of this drink you must let yourself be taken in by the qualities and special characteristics of its originality.

Experts explain that the body of a wine is measured according to the lack of water. As such, it can be full bodied, medium bodied or light bodied.

Those with full body are heavy and robust; those with medium body, on the other hand, are lighter and let you appreciate their slightly watery taste; the light wines, or light bodied, for their part, are characterized by having greater water content.

Likewise, the color of the wine must also de defined, they can be white, rosé or red, or variations.

The Burgundy wines, for example, must be a deep red.

As regards the bouquet, this can be sensed when you breathe in the wine in a glass with a relatively wide mouth. Some wines have quite a pronounced bouquet easy to detect, while others are characterized by having a moderate bouquet that can be recognized easily. The wines with a delicate and subtle bouquet in contrast, have a very volatile aroma difficult to detect (this is called a dark bouquet).

La calidad del vino se reconoce según su cuerpo, su aroma y su color. Si usted quiere conocer la magia de esta bebida debe dejarse llevar por las cualidades y particularidades de su frescura.

Los expertos explican que el cuerpo del vino se mide según la carencia de agua. Así, pueden ser de mucho, mediano o de poco cuerpo. Los de mucho cuerpo son pesados y robustos; los de mediano cuerpo, en cambio, son más delgados y dejan apreciar su sabor ligeramente aguado; los vinos livianos o de poco cuerpo, por su parte, se caracterizan por contener mayor cantidad de agua.

Así también, el color de los vinos debe ser bien definido, pueden ser blancos, rosados o rojos, o sus variaciones. Los vinos Borgoña, por ejemplo, deben ser de color rojo oscuro.

En cuanto al aroma se refiere, éste puede ser percibido cuando se inhala el vino en una copa de boca relativamente ancha. Algunos vinos tienen un olor bastante pronunciado fácil de detectar, mientras que otros se caracterizan por tener una fragancia moderada que se reconoce fácilmente. Los vinos de aroma delicado y sutil, en cambio, tienen un olor muy etéreo difícil de detectar (se dice que se trata de un olor oscuro).

Characteristics: This is a building that combines technology, art and innovation.

It can withstand earthquakes of up to 7 degrees on the Richter scale and winds of more than 450 kilometers an hour. A huge ball of steel, of 680 tons, is suspended from its highest point and serves as a mechanical balance against vibrations. It has also won the world record for the speed of its elevator; which in a mere 37 seconds can take 30 people from the fifth floor of the building to the 89th floor, reaching a speed of 16.83 meters per second.

Characteristics: These twin skyscrapers have become the symbol of Kuala Lumpur with their facade of steel and glass. The structure honors the Muslim culture of Malaysia with its motifs of Islamic art: its geometric design intertwines two squares of decreasing size in its higher part, making the shape of a star. The two towers are joined at 171 meters from the ground (on the 41st and 42nd floor), to allow movement from one to the other, through the ‘Skybridge’, which creates a space that symbolizes “a door towards the infinity of the sky”.

Characteristics: Its exterior is black aluminum with bronze colored glass cut with stunning black lines. For two decades it held the title for the highest building in the world, until the Petrona Towers took over the position in 1998.

This building is SEARS TOWER supported by square tubes of soldered steel (the floors are suspended from these tubes), this being a technological innovation of the engineer Fazlur Kahn, who discovered that a building constructed with a series of tubes would be lighter and stronger that one constructed with the traditional steel framework.

ike every father or mother, you want your child to enjoy his/her youth in the best possible way, for this reason there is the famous and much awaited “graduation trip” just around the corner... so much joy for him/her, but... full of worry for you!

To somewhat soothe this anxiety of sending your child abroad – perhaps for the first time -, below we present you with some guidelines of what to do so that you can also enjoy your child’s happiness. The recipe is simple, do things on time, in an organized way and with the help of people who know what they are doing; for this reason Jerónimo Vaqueiro, manager of Tropical Tours, and Mario Rodo, manager of Cuarta Dimensión Viajes, provide us with some very useful advice about what to do and what not to do, let’s see:

En primer lugar se recomienda realizar los trámites correspondientes para el viaje (pasaporte, visa, vacuna contra la fiebre amarilla) con 1 ó 2 meses de anticipación, para evitar cualquier contratiempo.

2. Al elegir el programa de turismo, es bueno tomar en cuenta no solamente el precio del paquete, sino que se debe buscar la empresa que tenga mayor responsabilidad y experiencia en el tema: el personal debe estar altamente capacitado y tener una amplia experiencia en imprevistos.

3. No dejarse influenciar por los comentarios de parientes o amigos que ya enviaron a sus hijos al viaje de promoción. Muchas veces los jóvenes tienden a exagerar lo bien que la pasaron. Las fiestas no son tan desenfrenadas como se cree.

4. Si existe condiciones especiales de salud como asma, alergias o cualquier otro tipo de afección, se debe notificar a la empresa encargada. También es bueno identificar previamente la aceptación o no de los jóvenes a los mariscos, pues en destinos de playas la mezcla de estos frutos marinos con el sol, la salinidad del agua y muchas veces el alcohol (no es ningún secreto que a esa edad los jóvenes empiezan a consumirlo), puede generar alguna reacción adversa.

5. Se recomienda tener una charla previa con los chicos para recordarles que salir a disfrutar no significa romper las reglas del hogar. No se debe olvidar que los padres, en el caso de los menores de edad, son los directos responsables de las acciones de sus hijos ante la empresa de turismo y ante las autoridades extranjeras. Es importante saber que, aunque en Bolivia las peleas en discotecas no traen consecuencias mayores a la expulsión, en otros países como México después de una pelea inevitablemente viene la cárcel.

6. Se debe evitar llevar aparatos electrónicos costosos como cámaras fotográficas, filmadoras o celulares de última generación, porque la idea es disfrutar del viaje y no convertirse en esclavo de estos artefactos. Es mejor llevar unos relativamente baratos para que, en caso de extravío, no se vuelva la gran amargura del paseo.

7. Es muy común que el equipaje de unos y otros sea muy parecido, por lo que no estaría de más intentar personalizar de alguna manera cada maleta. La misma recomendación va para la ropa, pues las habitaciones suelen ser compartidas entre cuatro personas.

8. Es muy oportuno que los chicos cuenten con una tarjeta de crédito de consumo limitado para utilizarla en casos de emergencia, y no se recomienda viajar con un monto menor a los 300 dólares ni mayor a los 800. La idea de este viaje es que los jóvenes disfruten de momentos de compañerismo, por eso es bueno evitar susceptibilidades como las que surgen cuando unos pueden comprar mucho más que otros.

9. Llevar la protección adecuada contra el sol: bloqueadores, sombreros, gafas de sol, etc. Y no pretender quedar completamente bronceado desde el primer día, pues una prolongada exposición al sol puede llegar a interrumpir el disfrute del viaje.

10. Mucho cuidado con las continuas llamadas de mamá y papá. No pidan a sus hijos que gasten en las conferencias y tampoco les llamen a cada momento, porque los horarios de ingreso y salida al hotel son muy variables, incluso durante la noche. Tenga en cuenta que si algo malo llegara a ocurrir, usted será el primero en enterarse.

In the first place, it is recommended that you carry out all the corresponding paperwork for the trip (passport, visa, vaccination against yellow fever) 1 or 2 weeks beforehand, to avoid any delays or mishaps.

On choosing the tour package, it is good to keep in mind not only the cost of the package, but you should also look for the most responsible and experienced company in the area: the staff must be highly trained and have a wide experience of handling the unexpected.

3.

Do not be influenced by the comments from family or friends who have already sent their children on graduation trips.

Often kids tend to exaggerate how much fun they had. The parties are not as out of control as you think.

4.

If there are any special health considerations such as asthma, allergies or any other type of illness, the company in charge must be notified. It is also good to previously identify your child’s tolerance, or not, to seafood, as in beach holidays the mixture of seafood with sun, salty water and often alcohol (it is no secret that at this age youths begin to drink) can cause some adverse reactions.

It is recommended that you have a chat beforehand with your son/daughter to remind them that going out to enjoy themselves does not mean breaking the rules at home. It must not be forgotten that parents, in the case of minors, are directly responsible for the actions of their children towards the tour company and the authorities abroad. It is important to know that, while in Bolivia fights in discotheques do not have greater consequences than being thrown out of the place, in other countries like Mexico, after a fight a trip to jail inevitably follows.

You should avoid taking expensive electronic appliances with you like cameras, video-cameras or cell phones of the latest technology, because the idea is to enjoy the trip and not to become a slave to these devices. It is better to take along some relatively cheap equipment that, if lost, does not turn into the biggest frustration of the trip.

It is very common for people’s luggage to be very similar, for this reason it would be good to try to personalize the suitcase in some way. The same goes for clothes, as rooms are often shared with four people.

8.

This is the right moment for the kids to have a credit card with restricted use to use in cases of emergency, and it is not recommended to travel with less than 300 dollars or more than 800. The idea of this trip is that the kids enjoy their time together, for this reason it is good to avoid susceptibilities such as those that arise when some can buy much more that others.

9.

Take adequate protection against the sun: sun blocks, hats, sunglasses, etc. And do not attempt to get completely tanned on the first day, as extended exposure to the sun can prevent you from enjoying the rest of trip.

10. Take great care with constant calls to mummy and daddy. Do not ask your children to spend money on calls and do not call them all the time either, because the hours of comings and goings to the hotel are very variable, even at night. Keep in mind that if something bad should happen, you will be the first to know.

De los diez libros de su autoría que hasta el momento han salido a la luz, seis llevan el nombre de Bolivia, y a diferencia de obras de otros autores, las suyas despliegan con gran sentido equitativo todos y cada uno de los contrastantes rincones bolivianos.

Sin embargo, con su última obra, Santa Cruz, la Bolivia del siglo XXI, Willy Kenning deja claro que después de 25 años de trabajo fotográfico y 15 publicando libros, ya es tiempo de ‘ponerse la camiseta’ por su región y mostrar más a fondo todas sus particularidades, destacando el sentir dinámico y trabajador del cruceño. “Es el momento de que Santa Cruz se desmarque del contexto andino del país y tenga su propia imagen”, explica.

De esa manera Santa Cruz, la Bolivia del siglo XXI es el resultado de un Willy Kenning que pasó de ser perfectamente boliviano a ser orgullosamente cruceño, para mostrar a través de las más espectaculares fotografías el poderío y la riqueza productiva de una Santa Cruz pujante, alegre y emprendedora.

En esta su décima entrega, que viene a conformar la segunda parte de una primera publicación denominada Santa Cruz, la otra cara de Bolivia (1991), Kenning ha reafirmado su amor y admiración por Santa Cruz, y su gran interés por dotar de una imagen propia a la región cruceña que, como él mismo explica, necesita contrarrestar el perfil esencialmente andino con el que se conoce al país.

Así, los colores más variados sobre el progreso y el coraje de Santa Cruz se ven reflejados en las 256 páginas de este último libro, que cobija retratos de su gente, su cultura, su economía, su geografía y hasta de su turismo. Un capítulo especial contiene la propuesta autonómica que Santa Cruz le hace al resto del país; Nuestra Visión, como se ha titulado esta sección del libro, es el corazón y la parte más emotiva del libro. “El cruceño estaba esperando esto, porque ahora puede mostrar en imágenes todo su orgullo y su postura regional”, señala.

Con las más de 500 fotos que reviven lo que es y lo que ha logrado Santa Cruz, acompañadas de los textos explicativos de profesionales del medio como los historiadores Paula Peña y Alcides Parejas, el economista Juan Manuel Arias, el arquitecto Fernando Prado, Adolfo Moreno, Mariel Palma, el abogado Juan Carlos Urenda y la comunicadora Susana Seleme, Santa Cruz, la Bolivia del siglo XXI logra describir con todas sus luces las cualidades y los elementos que conforman el brazo productivo de Bolivia. “Este libro podría ser una propuesta de desarrollo para el resto del país: miren cómo hemos crecido y cómo hemos avanzado”, expresa.

Cuando Willy Kenning habla sobre lo que vendrá, necesariamente debe recurrir a esa postura cruceñista que plasmó tan claramente en su último libro. In his tenth publication, which forms the second part of a previous publication called Santa Cruz, the other face of Bolivia (1991), Kenning has reaffirmed his love and admiration for Santa Cruz, and his great interest in providing the Santa Cruz region with its own image, as he himself explains, we need to counteract the essentially Andean profile for which the country is known.

Therefore, the progress and courage of Santa Cruz are reflected in the most varied colors in the 256 pages of this latest book that contains portraits of its people, its culture, its economy, its geography and even its tourism. One special chapter contains the proposal for autonomy that Santa Cruz is presenting to the rest of the country; Our Vision, as this section of the book is titled, is the core and the most emotional part of the book. “The people of Santa Cruz were waiting for this, because now they can show all their pride and their regional standpoint in images” he indicates.

With more than 500 photos showing what Santa Cruz is and what it has achieved, accompanied by explanatory texts written by professionals in the area, such as the historians Paula Peña and Alcides Parejas, the economist Juan Manuel Arias, the architect Fernando Prado, Adolfo Moreno, Mariel Palma, the lawyer Juan Carlos Urenda and the communicator Susana Seleme, Santa Cruz, Bolivia in the 21st Century manages to describe openly, the traits and elements that make up the productive region of Bolivia. “This book could be a development proposal for the rest of the country: look how we have grown and how we have progressed”, he states.

When Willy Kenning talks about things to come, he must obviously turn to the Santa Cruz stance that is expressed so clearly in his latest book. He explains that Santa Cruz, Bolivia in the 21st Century, is the second edition of a series of books that he will make on this Camba (the name for the Santa Cruz region) land. “I have decided to dedicate my work to Santa Cruz, because it is very important for me that Santa Cruz should have its own image and profile”, he concludes.

RAZÓN DE SER La idea de hacer un libro sobre Santa Cruz venía madurando en la cabeza de Willy Kenning desde hace varios años, pero por otros proyectos que ocupaban su tiempo no podía materializarla.

Sin embargo, llegó un momento en el que ya resultaba imprescindible que Santa Cruz cuente con un soporte de su identidad y su gran progreso, pues ya no necesitaba solamente mostrar que es la otra cara de Bolivia, sino que tiene una postura frente al desarrollo y su propia propuesta de crecimiento.

“La patada inicial para que yo decida hacer este libro fue durante el cabildo de enero de 2005. Ese era el momento más adecuado para mostrar lo que nosotros somos, lo que hacemos y lo que producimos”, sostiene Kenning. Desde entonces el proyecto fue tomando forma hasta convertirse en un compendio de imágenes sobre la realidad cruceña.

RAISON D’ÊTRE The idea of making a book about Santa Cruz has been growing in Willy Kenning’s head for several years, but due to other projects that occupied his time he could not get around to it. However, there came a time when it became essential that Santa Cruz should get some recognition for its identity and for its great progress, as it no longer only needed to show that it was the other face of Bolivia, but also that it had a position on development and its own proposal for growth.

“The initial incentive that made me decide to make this book came during the city gathering in January 2005. This was the best time to show what we are, what we do and what we produce”, maintains Kenning.

Since then the project began to take shape until it became a compendium of images about the reality of Santa Cruz.

ave, save, save... people are always talking about saving... but, are we able to do it?

Many times we become confused and upset on realizing that our intention to save is not enough to achieve our goals and, on the contrary, we see our money evaporating as if by magic. To avoid this, it is necessary to take some actions and to begin to save as you ought to, firstly by placing all your cards on the table. Likewise, it is worthwhile remembering what saving actually is and why this activity that means sacrifice, perseverance and foresight is useful. Sacrifice for not immediately spending what we have today; perseverance to do it every week, every month, every year; foresight for the difficult times, in order to reach out goals or to live better. It sounds simple, doesn’t it?

However, on countless occasions the question arises as to how to save when the money appears to be a ghost that nobody sees or that it appears to have wings and takes flight. Don’t despair, there are always some basic formulas that we can follow to put us on the path to save and have some economic perspective. The first thing that you must be clear about is that to save it is essential that your total income is greater than your total expenditure. The strategy then ought to be to increase income or reduce expenses...what a dilemma!

The first step is to keep a list of all the income and expenditure during the month. This will help you to decide what the next action should be. It is possible that on finishing the list we will discover that many of the expenses that we incur are superfluous and unnecessary and that we can reduce them.

The next advisable step is to establish saving objectives; that is to say, find a reason for saving: a new car, house, university for the children, vacation, etc. This will then make it easier to define the amounts of money that need to be saved each week, month or year.

Once the objectives are clear, what is left is to prepare a monthly or yearly budget, where the fixed costs are clearly identified (water, electricity, cable TV, telephone services, school fees, etc.) along with the amount that must be saved to achieve our goals.

horrar, ahorrar, ahorrar... siempre se habla de ahorrar... pero ¿logramos hacerlo?

Muchas veces podemos vernos confundidos y alterados al darnos cuenta que nuestras intenciones de ahorro no son suficientes para lograr nuestros objetivos y, por el contrario, notamos que nuestro dinero se evapora como por arte de magia. Para evitar esto es necesario tomar algunas medidas y empezar a ahorrar como se debe, poniendo –primeramente- todas las cartas sobre la mesa.

Así, no está de más recordar qué es y para qué sirve el ahorro, esa actividad que implica sacrificio, constancia y previsión. Sacrificio de no gastar inmediatamente lo que tenemos hoy; constancia de hacerlo cada semana, cada mes, cada año; previsión para los tiempos difíciles, para alcanzar nuestras metas o para vivir mejor.

Suena simple ¿no es cierto?

Sin embargo, infinidad de veces ha surgido la pregunta de cómo ahorrar si el dinero parece un fantasma que nadie ve o un aparenta tener alas y se va volando. No hay que desesperarse, siempre pueden existir algunas fórmulas básicas que podemos seguir para encaminarnos por el sendero de la reserva y de la perspectiva económica.

Lo primero que se debe tener claro es que para ahorrar lo esencial es que el total de los ingresos sea mayor que el total de los ahorros. La estrategia entonces debería ser aumentar los ingresos o reducir los gastos... ¡vaya dilema!

Llevar un registro detallado de todas las entradas y de todos los egresos del mes es el primer paso. Esto ayudará a determinar cuáles pueden ser las acciones a seguir. Es posible que al finalizar la lista descubramos los muchos gastos superfluos e innecesarios que hacemos y que podemos recortar.

El siguiente paso aconsejable es establecer objetivos de ahorro; es decir, encontrar una razón para ahorrar: un auto nuevo, una casa, la universidad de los chicos, unas vacaciones, etc. Entonces será más fácil definir los montos de dinero que se necesita guardar a la semana, al mes o al año.

Una vez los objetivos estén claros, lo que queda es preparar un presupuesto mensual y/o anual, donde se identifiquen perfectamente los gastos fijos (servicios de agua, luz, cable, teléfono, la mensualidad del colegio, etc.) y el monto que se debe reservar para alcanzar nuestras metas.

La clave del éxito está en seguir al pie de la letra nuestro presupuesto, serle fiel y respetarlo. Y tener mucho cuidado de no dejarse tentar por la idea encantadora de ahorrar lo que nos sobre a fin de mes ¡ése es un tremendo error! Lo primero que se debe hacer al recibir un sueldo es pagarse a uno mismo; es decir, guardar la cantidad que queremos ahorrar.

Luego viene lo más difícil: reducir los gastos. A simple vista puede parecer prácticamente imposible, pero con algunas medidas sencillas las oportunidades de ahorro hasta llegarán solas.

Revisar las facturas de agua, luz y teléfono, por ejemplo, puede darnos una idea de si estamos o no consumiendo de más. No dejar correr el agua mientras nos cepillamos los dientes, apagar las luces que no se estén utilizando o no usar la lavadora con cantidades pequeñas de ropa, son algunas de las acciones que se deberían convertir en rutina.

Asimismo, acostumbrarnos a hacer las compras de mercado con una lista de las necesidades básicas e indispensables y no comprar sólo por impulso, es otra medida importantísima. También podríamos intentar aprovechar inteligentemente las ofertas de descuentos; llevar otro producto de la misma calidad del que necesitamos por un precio menor no le cae mal a nadie.

Por otro lado, sería bueno hacer un análisis de si ya es tiempo de dejar a un lado la tarjeta de crédito ó simplemente reducir su uso pensando que es “un barril sin fondo”. Cancelar todas las deudas lo más rápido que sea posible ó programarlas de manera que no excedan nuestra capacidad de pago mensual, incrementará las posibilidades de empezar a ahorrar. En el caso de requerir necesariamente una tarjeta de crédito, debemos encontrar tiempo para buscar la que nos ofrezca el interés más bajo.

Siguiendo estas simples pero valiosas medidas, la palabra ‘ahorro’ será de uso cotidiano en nuestra casa y los resultados, indudablemente, serán satisfactorios. Recuerde, sin embargo, que la filosofía del ahorro debe ser compartida por todos los miembros de la familia, porque de nada le valdrá a usted hacer todos los esfuerzos de manera solitaria, si los demás no están conscientes de la importancia de ahorrar.

Por lo tanto, no olvide nunca que todo dependerá de qué tan decididos estemos de hacerlo, y de que el ahorro se trata de sacrificio, constancia y previsión.

And be very careful not to be tempted by the enticing idea of saving what is left at the end of the month, this is a big mistake! The first thing to do on receiving our salary is to pay ourselves; that is to say, keep aside the quantity that we want to save.

Then comes the most difficult part: reducing our expenses. On first sight, this can appear practically impossible, but with some simple measures the opportunities to save will almost appear on their own.

For example, examining the water, electricity and phone bills can give us an idea if we are consuming too much or not. Don’t let the water run while you are brushing your teeth, turn off all lights that are not needed or do not use the washing machine with small amounts of clothes, are all some actions that ought to become routine.

Likewise, another important measure is to make ourselves do our shopping with a list of the basic needs and indispensable items and not just buy on impulse. We can also try to make use of discount offers intelligently; choosing a product of the same quality as we need for a lower price never did anyone any harm.

On the other hand, it would be good to examine whether it is now time to put the credit card to one side or simply to reduce its use and stop thinking of it as a “bottomless pit”. Canceling all debts as soon as is possible or programming them in a way that they do not exceed our monthly ability to pay will increase the possibilities to start to save. In the case of really needing a credit card, we must take the time to find one that offers the lowest interest rate.

By following these simple but valuable actions, the word “save” will become a daily word in our homes and without doubt the results will be satisfactory. Remember, however, that the saving philosophy must be shared by all members of the family, because it is no use you making all the efforts alone if the rest of the family is not aware of the importance of saving. Also, never forget that everything depends on how determined we are to do it, and that saving means sacrifice, perseverance and foresight.

Este 2007 se cumplen diez años desde que se creó la empresa Servicios de Aeropuertos Bolivianos S.A. (SABSA), y es por eso que usted estimado viajero ya ha notado las muchas innovaciones y mejoras que se están realizando en los aeropuertos del eje central: la ampliación y renovación de nuestras principales terminales aéreas son, de alguna manera, parte de la celebración por estos diez primeros años de trabajo sirviendo a los bolivianos.

Estas líneas son una forma más de festejar junto a usted el trabajo permanente de la administradora de los aeropuertos del Estado boliviano.

The concession contract celebrated with the Bolivian State, represented by the Airport Administration and Air Navigation Auxiliary Services (Administración de Aeropuertos y Servicios Auxiliares a la Navegación Aérea - AASANA), awarded the concession holder the administration, operation, maintenance, economic development and expansion of the three principal airports in the country: El Alto (La Paz), Jorge Wilstermann (Cochabamba) and Viru Viru (Santa Cruz), for a period of 25 years, for which effect the company Bolivian Airport Services Inc. (Servicios de Aeropuertos Bolivianos S.A.

En 1997 la compañía Airport Group Internacional (A.G.l.) obtuvo la Concesión Maestra de Aeropuertos a través de una licitación pública internacional emitida por el Estado Boliviano. El contrato de concesión celebrado con el Estado boliviano representado por la Administración de Aeropuertos y Servicios Auxiliares a la Navegación Aérea (AASANA), otorgó al concesionario la administración, operación, mantenimiento, explotación económica y expansión de los tres principales aeropuertos del país: El Alto (La Paz), Jorge Wilstermann (Cochabamba) y Viru Viru (Santa Cruz), por un periodo de 25 años, para cuyo efecto constituyó la empresa Servicios de Aeropuertos Bolivianos S.A. (SABSA); según explica el gerente general de SABSA, Anthony Alicastro, para que esta última brinde, apoyo tecnológico y económico a los aeropuertos del Estado boliviano a través de los pagos que realiza al fisco como contraprestación de la concesión y que a la fecha alcanza la suma de US$40 millones pagados a AASANA. “En lo tecnológico la idea fue traer un operador con experiencia que pueda transferir a la empresa y a sus 450 empleados los conocimientos de cómo manejar un aeropuerto con estándares internacionales”, señala. Y siendo A.G.I. una empresa especializada en la prestación de servicios aeroportuarios y con gran experiencia a nivel mundial, la labor desarrollada sin duda ha sido de alto vuelo. Hoy, con la participación de Abertis/Aena, la posición de los aeropuertos bolivianos en el escenario mundial se ha incrementado. Abertis es una de las principales empresas de infraestructura en España y Europa y Aena es la administradora de aeropuertos del Estado español, un referente en la aviación internacional. Hoy, el grupo Abertis del que SABSA forma parte, administra directa o indirectamente más de diez aeropuertos en Europa, Estados Unidos y Latinoamérica, colocando el nombre de Bolivia en la industria aeroportuaria mundial, con estándares de calidad y seguridad similares a cualquier aeropuerto del mundo, lo que ha sido corroborado por la OACI (Organización de Aviación Civil Internacional).

En relación al fin último de la concesión, Alicastro apunta al peso que tienen las constantes inversiones: “Haciendo una radiografía de los primeros años, estoy tranquilo porque se ha cumplido la misión de transferir los costos para mantener y mejorar los aeropuertos de la troncal, y al mismo tiempo de alimentar a los aeropuertos del resto del país, porque también se tiene esa función”, explica.

- SABSA) was created; as the general manager of SABSA, Anthony Alicastro, explains, so that the latter can provide technical and economic support to the Bolivian State’s airports through the payments that it makes to the Treasury in accordance with the concession and that to date has reached the sum of US$40 million paid to AASANA. “As regards technology, the idea was to bring in an operator with experience, who could transfer the knowledge of how to manage an airport to international standards to the company and its 450 employees”, he states. As A.G.I. is a company specialized in the provision of airport services and with great experience on a world level, the work developed has without doubt been of great importance. Today, with the participation of Abertis/Aena, the position of the Bolivian airports in the world stage has increased. Abertis is one of the main infrastructure companies in Spain and Europe and Aena is the airport administrator for the Spanish State, a leader in international aviation. Today, the Abertis group, of which SABSA forms part, directly or indirectly administrates more than ten airports in Europe, USA and Latin America, placing the name of Bolivia in the world airport industry, with standards of quality and safety similar to any airport in the world, which has been corroborated by the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization).

COMPROMISOS SABSA, a través de su concesión asumió responsabilidades económicas con el Estado Boliviano, propietario de los aeropuertos. El gerente general, Anthony Alicastro, nos habla de tres grandes cifras en estos diez años: el pago a AASANA por concepto de Tasa de Concesión (40 millones de dólares), el pago de impuestos (20 millones de dólares) y la Tasa de Regulación que se cancela a la Superintendencia de Transportes (1.5 millones de dólares).

“Por otro lado, hay otra obligación que tiene SABSA y que el público desconoce: el contrato de concesión nos pasa el compromiso de pagar la deuda que el Estado Boliviano contrajo con el Estado Italiano para la construcción del aeropuerto Jorge Wilstermann de la ciudad de Cochabamba (10 millones de euros), que estamos pagando en su integridad”, manifiesta Alicastro, haciendo un recuento de los aportes que hace SABSA al Gobierno.

De igual manera, SABSA se comprometió a ser la responsable del mantenimiento de la terminal de pasajeros, la pista de aterrizaje, la plataforma, las calles de rodaje, las ayudas visuales y del sistema ILS. Así como de la seguridad aeroportuaria (la Policía Nacional es responsable de la vigilancia de las áreas públicas y la Fuerza Aérea Boliviana es responsable de la protección del área aeronáutica del aeropuerto). SABSA también está a cargo de prestar el Servicio de Extinción de Incendios en los tres aeropuertos concesionados, para lo que cuenta con un cuerpo de bomberos especializados, así como equipos de nueva tecnología.

El contrato de concesión especifica que los servicios aeroportuarios concesionados deben corresponder a altos niveles de comodidad y funcionalidad, los mismos que corresponden a la Categoría B estipulada por la Asociación de Transporte Aéreo Internacional (IATA, por sus siglas en inglés), en ese sentido, SABSA debía entregar un Plan Maestro para cada Terminal doce meses después de la fecha de inicio del contrato. “SABSA lo entregó en 1998. En 2001 hemos insistido con actualizaciones y lo hemos transformado, y recién el 2005 se trabajó en coordinación con el Estado y finalmente se aprobó. Entonces el 2006 hemos arrancado con la etapa fuerte de planificación de obras, que sabíamos que eran necesarias de encarar inmediatamente”, cuenta Alicastro, haciendo referencia a la primera serie de obras que estamos viendo ejecutar este 2007.

El Plan Maestro cubre hasta la finalización del contrato de concesión, determinado para el año 2022. Sin embargo, actualmente se están ejecutando las proyecciones hechas para los próximos cinco años.

Se trata básicamente de trabajos de mejoramiento de la infraestructura, para asegurar que los aeropuertos tengan la capacidad de satisfacer las crecientes demandas de los pasajeros, cuyo incremento va en ascenso.

COMMITMENTS SABSA, through its concession, assumed economic responsibilities with the Bolivian State, owner of the airports. The general manager, Anthony Alicastro, tells us of three large figures in these ten years: the payment to AASANA for the Concession Tax (40 million dollars), the payment of taxes (20 million dollars) and the Regulation Tax that was paid to the Transport Superintendent (1.5 million dollars).

“On the other hand, SABSA has another obligation that the public are unaware of: the concession contract passed on to us the commitment to pay the debt that the Bolivian State incurred with the Italian State for the building of the Jorge Wilstermann airport in the city of Cochabamba (10 million Euros), that we are paying in full”, declares Alicastro, recounting the contributions that SABSA makes to the Government.

In the same way, SABSA promised to be responsible for the maintenance of the passenger terminal, the runway, the platforms, the taxiing runways, visual aids and the ILS system, in addition to airport security (the National Police are responsible for the safety of public areas and the Bolivian Air Force is responsible for the protection of the airspace of the airport). SABSA is also in charge of providing Fire Extinction Services in the three concessionary airports, for which they have a specialized team of fire-fighters, along with the latest equipment.

LOOKING TO THE IMMEDIATE FUTURE The concession contract specifies that the concessionary airport services must correspond to high levels of comfort and functionality, the same ones that correspond to category B stipulated by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), in this way, SABSA had to present a Master Plan for each Terminal twelve months after the starting date of the contract. “SABSA presented this in 1998. In 2001 we insisted on updates and we altered it, and only in 2005 was it coordinated with the State and finally approved. Therefore in 2006, we began with the intense phase of planning the works that we knew we needed to begin immediately”, Alicastro tells us, making reference to the first series of works that we are seeing being implemented in 2007.

The Master Plan lasts until the end of the concession contract, intended for the year 2022. However, currently the projections made for the next five years are being implemented.

Basically it is all about works to improve infrastructure, to ensure the airports have the capacity to satisfy the growing demands of passengers, the number of which is increasing.

Of all the planned modifications, those that are programmed for the El Alto airport have a different viewpoint, because they not only consist of expanding the building, but also of a process of EL ALTO modernization of the structure that was built in the 1950s. The work consists of completely demolishing the current international Terminal to optimize and increase the flow of passengers in all its areas (baggage claim, government control and waiting areas).

The expansion and improvement plans for this important airport have the objective of planning to satisfy the demand and they are being developed according to the chronogram approved VIRU VIRU for the current period, which concentrates particularly on the expansion of the public areas of the national and international terminals.

As mentioned previously, the new Cochabamba Terminal inaugurated in 1999 does not require major expansion, in fact there is actually an underutilization of the areas constructed on JORGE WILSTERMANN the top floor, the reason for which the plans to adapt the top floor of the terminal and its corresponding equipping are the tasks that are proposed to be carried out within the framework of the State’s proposal.

De todas las modificaciones planeadas, las que se tienen programadas para el aeropuerto de El Alto tienen una óptica diferente, porque no consiste solamente en la ampliación del edificio, sino que se trata de un EL ALTO proceso de modernización de la estructura que se levantó en los años 50. La obra comprende la demolición total de la actual Terminal internacional para optimizar e incrementar el flujo de pasajeros en todas sus áreas (recojo de equipajes, control gubernamental y sala de espera).

Los fieles practicantes del método Pilates hablan de los beneficios de realizar esta actividad sin temor a equivocarse. Se trata, afirman, de la receta más efectiva contra una vida abrumada por el stress y por las constantes tensiones.

Rosa Elena Araoz, instructora certificada de Pilates System, asegura que nunca dejará de ejercitar su rutina, pues le ayuda a mantener su cuerpo saludable y a tener un día a día más llevadero. Esta experta en la materia nos comenta que una sola hora de práctica se puede convertir en una completa y vigorizante terapia, con la cual todas las preocupaciones pueden alejarse.

Por eso, más allá de pensar en el método Pilates como un estricto e inusual sistema de ejercicios, esta práctica podría considerarse como un botón de energía y de bienestar que inyecta precisión, flexibilidad y destreza a cada uno de nuestros actos, en una búsqueda incansable por integrar el cuerpo y la mente como un solo componente.

El método Pilates se basa en ocho principios fundamentales que garantizan su éxito. El primero consiste en encontrar el centro del cuerpo, referido principalmente a la musculatura del tronco; luego, los preceptos de la concentración, el control del ejercicio y la precisión (pocas pero efectivas repeticiones), protagonizan el proceso de perfeccionamiento de este sistema de ejercicios. La estabilización -que consiste en controlar las diferentes fuerzas que actúan en el cuerpo para mantenerlo en equilibrio y en balance-, así como la coordinación, la fluidez de movimiento y la respiración, son los siguientes principios que hacen palpables los resultados del método.

After the perfection of this “science”, results are seen in a more firm body, with greater agility and strength, and with full mental control, increasing self worth and confidence; there is an obvious improvement in muscle flexibility and mobility in the articulations, along with a general body strengthening and the correction of coordination, posture, equilibrium and alignment. This practice also promises to reduce tiredness, discomfort and pain, while providing a peaceful sleep and an enriched sexual life.

ITS PRINCIPLES The Pilates method is based on eight basic principles that guarantee its success. The first consists in finding the centre of the body, relating mainly to the torso muscles; then, the rules of concentration, the control of the exercise and the precision (few but effective repetitions), form part of the process of perfecting this system of exercises. Stability – which consists of controlling the different forces that act on the body to maintain it in equilibrium and balance-, along with coordination, fluidity of movement and breathing, are the principles followed that make the results of this method evident.

Joseph Pilates created these exercises in 1920. Although at the beginning dancers were the first to be interested in using it, Pilates wanted to develop the method further and use it in other ways such as in rehabilitation, above all based on his experiences in different hospitals after the First World War.

eguramente usted se ha imaginado, más de una vez, lo grandioso que sería cambiar su televisor actual por uno de esos monitores de cristal líquido que están invadiendo sin compasión los negocios del mundo entero. Colocar uno de estos flamantes aparatos en su sala de estar y disfrutar de un emocionante partido de fútbol o de una buena película a través de imágenes de altísima definición, es una tentación a la que muy pocas personas podrán resistirse... ¿logrará usted mantenerse al margen de tan maravillosa tecnología?

Las pantallas de cristal líquido o LCD, por sus siglas en inglés ‘Li-

quid Crystal Display’, son la nueva generación de televisores que está causando sensación en todos los rincones de este planeta; las compañías de este sector en Europa han registrado un increíble incremento de sus ventas durante todo el 2006, hasta el punto de que ya hablan del deceso seguro de los televisores CRT (tubos de rayos catódicos).

El éxito de la tecnología LCD es tal, que hasta las pantallas de Plasma se están viendo afectadas. Los entendidos en la materia hablan de una batalla entre los dos tipos de pantallas planas, ya no solamente en lo que respecta al tamaño del monitor o a la resolución de la imagen sino también en el tema del precio, puesto que los televisores LCD ya se ajustan al costo de los Plasma. Aunque, en ambos casos, la adquisición de uno de estos caprichos supone una importante suma de dinero.

Pero si hay una razón para que millones de personas en el mundo ya se hayan entregado a los placeres de tener una pantalla plana en su hogar, además de la alta definición, es porque el tamaño, el peso y el espesor de estos televisores permiten disfrutar de las bondades de un verdadero cine en la comodidad del hogar.

Entre los tamaños más solicitados están los televisores de 32 pulgadas, pero un crecimiento más radical lo han experimentado los de 37 y 40 pulgadas, convirtiéndose en las estrellas del momento.

Cuando la corriente circula entre los electrodos transparentes con la forma a representar (por ejemplo, un segmento de un número) el material cristalino se reorienta alterando su transparencia.

PANTALLA DE PLASMA El panel de la pantalla de plasma se compone de una multitud de píxeles. Cada píxel se compone de tres celdas rellenas con un gas inerte, que están separados por costillas. Al activar la celda, el gas emite una luz ultravioleta que activa el fósforo incorporado.

Después, el píxel brilla en los colores primarios rojo, verde o azul (RGB). Una tecnología de filtro en la celda garantiza unos colores claros y naturales.

LIQUID CRYSTAL SCREEN This is an electrical system to present data created by two layers of transparent conductors in the middle of a special crystalline material (liquid crystal) that has the ability to direct light through it. When current circulates between the transparent electrodes to represent some shape (for example, number segment) the crystalline material is redirected thereby altering its transparency.

PLASMA SCREEN The panel of the plasma screen is made up of a multitude of pixels.

Each pixel is made up of three cells filled with an inert gas, which are separated by rods. On activating the cell, the gas emits an ultraviolet light that activates the incorporated phosphorous. Afterwards, the pixel shines in the primary colors –red, green or blue (RGB). A filter technology in the cell guarantees clear and natural colors.
