As of its establishment in 1978 in Prato, where its registered office is still located, Cellini GTC has been active in the field of plant engineering. Its considerable experience has been gained in more than thirtyfive years of activity. The works done include more and more specialized and technologic plants (electric systems, intrusion prevention systems, CCTV, telephony and data transmission systems, articulated wiring, plumbing, conditioning and cogeneration plants) for hospitals, shopping centres, facilities in general (such as barracks, purification plants, train stations, etc.), schools, houses, public entertainment and art buildings, hotels.

GTC uses the slogan “ENERGIA VITALE” [VITAL ENERGY] which, besides representing well the company itself, summarizes its project in tune with the evolution of the market and of technology.

At the moment, Cellini GTC has a headquarter of 2,000 sqm covering all the different areas of planning, management and control of all the processes related to the implementation of big commission orders, from the planning to the testing and maintenance of the works done. Cellini GTC has then found a new domain of growth in the field of renewable energies; in fact, the negative economic trend of the markets in the last two years has led it to choose new research politics and develop new products/services. Therefore, Cellini GTC has gained a considerable attention and a strong participation in the market of renewable energies, by installing important photovoltaic plants and envisaging to involve itself also in small wind, biomass, hydro-power and cogeneration plants. Cellini GTC’s aim is to further develop its competence, following with firm belief the target to reach the highest quality in results, consistent with the company’s social dimension. As of the beginning of its activity, the company has in fact participated in and implemented contract works and, in the last years, has strengthened its presence in calls for tenders for project financing obtaining even long-term construction and maintenance permissions. With a supply chain of proven efficacy, based on the solid grounds of a know-how going from research to development and management of resources and plants, Cellini GTC is able to offer its clients a guarantee on their investment.

S T R U CT U RA L E N G I N E E R I N G The essence, and the challenge, of structural engineering is nearly always to design buildings to be stable, stiff and durable under all their imposed conditions while using the fewest resources possible. By using a multidisciplinary approach, aei progetti is not only able to provide its clients with high performance structures, but can also create designs that ensure elegant solutions aligned with the architects vision and, at the same time, cost and timeefficiency. The use of innovative materials, such as high-strength concrete and carbon fibre, or innovative techniques, such as in-situ post-tensioning for concrete, steel and wooden elements, combined with the analysis of every single detail from materials, allow AEI PROGETTI to deliver original and optimized solutions. Advanced finite element analysis enable us to predict the actual behavior of structures in terms of stresses, displacements and motions, trying to assess the static and dynamic responses of structures in order to reach the best performing and reliable solution. Our project can be developed according to all the worldwide codes and regulations (Eurocodes, ACI, ASTM, DIN, etc.). We try to approach every project as unique,
SEISMIC DESIGN
As AEI PROGETTI is based in one of the most earthquake-prone countries, we have significantly developed earthquake engineering since the company was founded. Earthquake engineering is a wide field that encompasses a broad range of specialist skills, ranging from geology, seismology, geotechnical and structural engineering to risk analysis. Thanks to its continuous study of all the most important international researches and seismic codes of practice, a collaborative cooperation with universities and participation in post-earthquake field missions, aei progetti is able to properly answer to the rapidly changing and demanding field of seismic engineering. We carry out extensive and advanced computer modelling to analyze structural stability when subjected to extreme earthquake ground motion and we try to experiment the latest construction techniques and materials to provide innovative and original solutions able to minimize the effect of seism on buildings. Advanced damping systems, such as tuned mass dampers and tuned liquid dampers, viscous and visco-elastic systems and base-isolated structures are some of the modern structural techniques we are experimenting. We believe that understanding how a structure reacts to the earthquake and how such response can be improved could save people’s lives.
WIND ENGINEERING
Wind loading is an important or dominant factor in the design of many structures, such as tall buildings and long-span structures. Gianni Bartoli, one of the founder partners, is professor of Theory of Structures at the University of Florence and is an internationally recognized wind engineering expert. His consultation with other wind engineering researchers and his activity at the wind tunnel laboratory of the University of Florence gives aei progetti a uniquely informed view on the state of the art. AEI PROGETTI is able to provide advanced wind engineering, design and consulting services to architects, contractors, developers and building owners, giving them specifications, supervisions, interpretation and analysis for a full range of wind tunnel studies. Wind loads on claddings, if not carefully estimated, may significantly affect the structural costs. Wind tunnel surface pressure measurements, combined with design skills and wind knowledge, allow us to provide a focused, quality answer. All buildings move, whatever their form, when subjected to wind actions. When such dynamic movements become excessive, as for tall buildings in high wind areas, the structural components are lead to overstressing and fatigue levels. In other cases many towers and bridges are susceptible to wind-induced sway oscillation that, when exceeding certain levels, can cause discomfort to occupants. All such movements in windy weather, self-induced (aeroelastic) wind responses included, can be reduced by outriggers and/or advanced damping systems through software tools able to help our engineers to visualize wind effects and to evaluate the effect of design changes.

G E OT E C H N I CA L Our multidisciplinary and integrated engineering approach include geotechnical specialists who, from the earliest stages of the project, work closely with external teams involved in geology, hydrogeology and environment, to design structures in the ground. aei progetti offers expertise in advanced ground investigation techniques as well as a complete range of geotechnical design options for all foundation types, basements, retaining walls, tunnels, and bridges. We develop solutions to improve soil mechanical characteristics through jet-grouting, vibro replacement (stone columns) and dynamic replacement systems and we are often involved in the design of temporary works, dewatering, instrumentation and monitoring. Advanced finite element analysis and monitoring systems enable us to analyze ground movements in order to minimize the interferences with other buildings when we work in close proximity with them. Our engineering solutions are developed to properly manage potential ground risks and to avoid unforeseen ground conditions during construction.
S U S TA I N A B I L I TY
aei progetti recently moved into the area of building physics and sustainability, providing clients and architects at the earliest stages of the design process with a range of strategies for design buildings: sustainable materials, energy and resource conserving, low or neutral carbon, self-sufficiency by collecting and reusing water and sustainability during construction phase. We try to give communities our contribute in the environmental impact of cities, planning and delivering environmentally friendly buildings complying with national and international green building accreditations CasaClima and BREEAM. Our knowledge and the use of advance simulation software enables us to analyze multiple design options and provide our clients with a range of solutions that meet overall objectives.
FIRE ENGINEERING
In aei progetti, fire engineering is a fundamental part of multidisciplinary design for a wide variety of buildings and infrastructure. The knowledge of fire science and fire safety design, combined with advanced computer modelling and an understanding of fire risk assessment are fundamental to improve the design quality of complex structural and infrastructure projects ensuring significant cost savings. A performancebased approach to fire safety (FSE – Fire Safety Engineering), that has increased its reliability thanks to the Computational Fluid Dynamics progress and the evolution of advanced computer technology, together with all regulatory requirements and safety standards knowledge, enable our engineers to facilitate architectural aims and the design of all types of structures producing tailor-made fire safety solutions suited to each project’s unique needs.

ARCHITECTURAL SERVICES
A multidisciplinary and integrated engineering approach lead aei progetti to develop an extensive knowledge of a wide range of architectural components, all of them referable to construction technology, enabling us to provide construction advices, consulting services and design to architects, contractors, developers and building owners. We are mainly involved in façades design and in the construction phase of architecture and interior design where our skills of both traditional and innovative construction practices allow to develop fully detailed design ensuring quality and respecting time and costs. Façades are fundamental to create the architectural expression of a building defining its visual impact on the urban environment and they are increasingly important for the energy efficiency of the building and the quality of internal comfort. New cladding materials and systems and manufacturing processing techniques are continually being developed to improve façade quality and to assess their environmental performance. Natural ventilation, shading and daylighting systems with environmental factors such as solar gain, wind flow and weather proofing, are only some of the issues we work on with architects and manufacturers from the earliest conceptual stages in order to provide our clients with high performance façades that would allow a reduction of energy and running costs. Many architectural firms are asking us to elaborate their project at the detail stage; at the same time we are involved in the development of interior construction drawings for several fashion brands.

NEW SURGERY AND EMERGENCY BUILDING Florence, ITALY The reorganization and expansion of General Surgery Pavillion and Emergency Room is an extremely important intervention in the HospitalUniversity Careggi complex (Florence), that is the leading point of reference for regional sanitary survey, hosting the most highly regarded medical-consultant departments also at a national level. The realization of hospital activities connected to 8 out of 12 existing integrated care departments, of 20 operating rooms, 37 diagnostic-radiology rooms and 650 sleeping accommodations, is foreseen. The project also involves the following interventions: the rehabilitation of the block currently housing both the operation and emergency rooms; the demolition and reconstruction of the 4 side-buildings intended for in-patient wards; the construction of a new block for mechanical and electrical services; the demolition of the central block together with the construction of a department intended to be the ‘fulcrum’ of the hospital premises where the new E-R, operating rooms and diagnosticradiology rooms will be placed. One of the project’s peculiarity that made it quite complex, is that all demolitionreconstruction interventions took place at different times, in order to guarantee health services’ continuity in the neighboring buildings not involved in the construction phase in progress. The alignment of empty circular columns on a 10.8x10.8m mesh, supports a row of circular main beams where double-T secondary beams rest in a perpendicular way and are in turn the support for the third row of elements where both upper and lower roof panels are placed. Such a structural hierarchy extends to the architectural solution for supporting the ring volume bordering the internal part of the square: an air-volume partially resting on circular columns and partially suspended from the roof structure by means of circular small-section rods. The typology of joints requires the welding in the workshop both of the top-part of the pillars to main-beams’ abutments and of the main beams to the secondary elements’ chunks. Such typology therefore enables to move bolted-on-site joints to less stressed sections hence significantly lightening the joints and, at the same time, stiffening and connecting the junctions where all structural elements converge. The continuity of critical junctions and the typology of sections gives the two-way frame construction a high resistance both to wind horizontal actions and to seismic actions despite the lack of bracing elements: the dissipation of seismic energy is entrusted to the structure’s post elastic resources.

FLORENCE ONCOLOGY CENTRE Florence, ITALY The intervention foresees both the restructuration of historical Villa Ragionieri and the construction of a new sanitary block in the foothills area surrounding the Villa. The Oncology Clinic is equipped with operating rooms, diagnostic wards, in-patient wards and cancer wards with cutting-edge cancer treatments. The historical part will be intended for administration management and expansion in health care service. The new building, running parallel to the Villa’s nineteenthcentury block, has 1 basement and 3 above ground floors and its approximately pentagonal plan has maximum dimensions of about 90 m and a maximum depth of about 55 m. The structure is composed by steel multistorey columns supporting two-way r.c. slabs and by stiffening elements as r.c. walls and cores (intended to accommodate vertical connections and ducts) that are designed to withstand horizontal seismic actions. Foundations are in structural ground slab. The high dimensions of the building characterize the complex only for what concerns the basement level while the remaining levels are set (by means of expansion joints) in structural independent blocks in order to reduce thermal stress due to seasonal thermal variations.

The irregularity of the structural mesh together with the need to reduce the floor thickness and the purpose to avoid slabs with drop-beams or protrusions that would obstruct the free circulation of the duct distribution, led to choose platforms realized with full concrete poststressed slabs by means of non-adherent cables. Such a solution turns the platform into a slab which is directly supported by pillars where beams are ultimately not evident resulting as slab stripes next to the pillars more reinforced than the adjoining ones. The use of concrete covers both for weak and post-stressed reinforcements located on the lower surface, guarantees an adequate fire resistance without forecasting the use of particular plasters or false ceiling installations and expensive fire dampers for the plants. The renovation project of Villa Ragionieri and particularly of its historical Renaissance core, aims to recover its original condition by means of several demolition and reconstruction interventions issued from a detailed analysis of the historical records, also required by Superintendence pursuant to its check-constrain on the entire complex. All interventions are designed to meet the need to improve the building’s resistance to seismic actions, according to codes and regulations.

NEW CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL A. MEYER Florence, ITALY The intervention was a renovation of the pavilions in Villa Ognissanti’s area, and the realization of new buildings for the construction of the new site of Polo Pediatrico. The renovation area is in Careggi’s hills surrounding the northeast side of the vast plain of Florence. The area is between 95.00 and 105.00 m a.s.l., being therefore characterized by a morphological profile which is slightly steep towards NNE-SSW and bulging in transversal direction. The design forecasts the following number of interventions: – realization of a new hospital block in the foothills area between Villa Ognissanti and Via di Careggi, that runs parallel to Villa Ognissanti for a total length of about 180 m and maximum depth of about 50 m. The building is constituted by 3 above ground floors plus a roof almost totally covered by green areas. The structure is a r.c. framework with r.c. stiffening elements as staircase, elevator cores and partitions that are used to provide the required resistance to horizontal seismic actions. Either strips or raft foundations (when under the stiffening elements) are foreseen. – Realization of retaining structures in the environs of Via Careggi by means of continuous concrete diaphragms (with several kinds of permanent tie rods) running through the back part of the new Hospital for a total length of about 240 meters.
