Spain and Portugal. To those living in the rest of Europe, the two nations of the Iberian peninsula may seem strangely similar. However, other than their geographical proximity, both countries undoubtedly have more differences between them than similarities. Despite its glorious colonial past, the history of Spain was directed towards the Mediterranean and Europe while the attentions of its more isolated Lusitanian neighbour were always focused on the Atlantic, like those of the seafarers' wives who lost their husbands to the sea. 3 Seasons invites you on a voyage of discovery between Porto and Madrid, to explore the exuberance of Spain and the discretion of Portugal.

DESTINATION An impression of the Dolce Vita Tuscany. The name alone conjures up impressions of a relaxed way of life on a fragrant summer evening. And images of hillsides covered in vineyards and olive trees swept by a warm breeze come to mind, with medieval villages encircling Romanesque chapels and beautiful cities where the greatest artists of the Renaissance expressed their ideas in the stone and marble of the palaces and churches. Forget your watch and sat nav. Just get used to taking your time and getting lost in the countryside of Tuscany to fully appreciate this region and enjoy the song of the cicadas in this little corner of Italy that will occasionally take you to a place that is lost in time.

SPECIAL REPORT Wellness and fitness in camping grounds The days when camping was just a few pitches grouped around a toilet block are well and truly over. Now, camping grounds offer a range of top end services, including increasingly comfortable spa and wellness centres. As you flick through the pages of our guide, you'll find more and more camping grounds with spas, hammams, saunas and even massage services. But some stand out from the rest, with their fullyequipped spa and wellness centres. 3 Seasons offers you a quick glimpse of a few of our most fabulous wellness destinations.

With 2012 already on the mind...

If there is one thing that annoys the campsite owners, is that people can imagine that, once the last campers left, they closed the door with a double turn and fly to the Bahamas where they spend the winter lingering on a long sandy beach. If autumn’s arrival means, for those who are not open all year round, a return to a normal life, this is not necessarily synonymous with vacation. Between meetings of regional federations, the meetings of the chain, communication work (website update, new brochure to be printed), the tourism fairs across Europe and of course grounds maintenance or construction of new infrastructures with the aim of offering more comfort, the winter schedule is often full. And even if the approach of the opening day of camping is creating an increase of stress among the most Zen of them it is with a real impatience that they all await the return of summer and the arrival of the first campers to make them reveal the new swimming pool built during the winter or to find out what they think of the card concocted by the chef.

E

l impa…it is with a rea await ll tience that they a mmer u the return of s e first th and the arrival of campers …

For us, at Camping Cheque, it is a little bit different. After working for several months on the 2011 edition of the Site Directory and its promotion across Europe, we have already set our minds in 2012. We are obviously pleased that the majority of you are getting ready in a few days to take the caravan out to the garage to discover new addresses of the 2011 edition of the Site Directory and curious to know who amongst new entrants, will seduce you the most. However, the bulk of our work for the 2011 season is behind us. We're back on the road to inspect new sites and in the hope to uncover even more beautiful places to offer in next year Site Directory. And, as often in this season, we offer you in this spring issue of 3 Seasons a foretaste of what the guide will be next year with 8 campsites which have integrated the Camping Cheque network after the 2010 Site Directory was printed. During your holidays 2011, we will be preparing your holiday 2012. And with Camping Cheque, they are expected without a doubt, excellent.

3 Seasons / Camping Cheque answer First of all, you need to know that only digital camping cheques can be ordered at distance and be used straight away when you are not at home (except for purchases made in the ANWB agencies, only in the Netherlands). As a matter of fact papered camping cheques are only sent to your house. To order digital cheques, you can contact us directly by phone or connect yourself on campingcheque.com. Then you just need to charge your Gold Card at the reception desk of the campsite (even during your stay). You can then extend your holiday as you see fit.

”Hello, Having subscribed for 3 years' Gold Card membership in June 2008, my subscription is going to expire soon. How can I renew my subscription? Is it automatic? Can I benefit from any special offers on renewing my subscription? Thank you for your answer.” 3 Seasons / Camping Cheque answer Your subscription is going to expire in June 2011. You will be informed by post a few weeks before the expiry date that is during the month of May, of the subscription renewal procedure and the number of Loyalty points that you have at your disposal. Depending on the number of points you have, there are 3 possible renewal offers open to you. If you have 70 points, we will exchange them automatically and without charge against 3 additional years’ subscription. Between 20 and 69 points, you can benefit from a renewal offered at a price of €22, 50 (that is 50% of the normal price). You have less than 20 points; the renewal price will be €30. If you wish to know the balance of your loyalty points right now, take a look at the Gold Card customer area on the www.campingcheque.com website.

”The Gold Card icon does not appear on all the campsites pages on the 2011 Site directory. Does this mean it that the Gold Card is not accepted in these establishments?”

3 Seasons / Camping Cheque answer The Gold Card is accepted in all campsites on the Camping Cheque network. This symbol is simply used to highlight the benefits offered to Gold Card holders in specific campsites. So you can bring your Gold Card in the 603 campsites of our network.

INFOS Campsites Kawan Village Domaine de Louvarel – Burgundy (F)

New covered swimming pool on the shores of Lac de Louvarel Kawan Village Domaine de Louvarel (p. 194 in the 2011 guide) on the shores of a lake between Burgundy and Jura will have a new covered pool this spring. Just another good reason to (re-)discover the lovely camping ground that you voted Top Camping in 2010. Domaine de Louvarel is a pretty tree-lined camping ground with camping spots that look out over the lake and the gently rolling countryside of Bresse Bourguignonne. It has direct access to the Louvarel swimming area next to the camping ground. This winter, the camping ground changed hands. The new owners have made some changes to the site, renovating the restaurant and adding a covered swimming pool which comes as an addition to the lake's swimming area.

In brief Kawan Village le Futuriste (p. 83 in the 2011 guide), opposite Futuroscope amusement park, opened a new covered swimming pool this year.

For more information about Domaine de Louvarel, please contact the camping ground directly or visit the website: www.louvarel.com.

Belvédère de l'Obiou camping ground (p. 219 in the 2011 guide) is located along the Route Napoleon. This winter, the camping ground moved its entrance to make access to the camping ground more practical, especially for large caravans. In addition, a new wall has been built between the camping ground and the road to reduce noise from the road.

Three errors have slipped into the Camping Cheque road map. Camping de Nevers (p. 201 in the 2011 guide) has been given the number 203 instead of 201. Camping Plage du Midi (p. 202) has been given the number 201, but should be number 202. Camping et Gites des Bains (p. 203) has been given the number 202 instead of 203.

Visit of the exhibition Artenciel offered to Gold Card members

Tourism and Handicap Label

From March 25th till May 15th, the Domaine de la Bergerie (p248 of the 2011 Site Directory) invites you on the discovery of the Artenciel exhibition in St Paul de Vence.

Nestling in a beautiful valley in the Auvergne region, near Le Puy en Velay, Kawan Village Camping Vaubarlet (p. 160, 2011 Site Directory) has just been awarded the Tourism and Handicap label. This label was given to the campsite for the 3 disabilities: mobility, hearing impaired and mentally. To obtain this, the campsite has made numerous improvements such as concrete paths for easy movement of wheelchairs or even an elevator to allow pool access for disabled people..

Saint-Paul de Vence, a picturesque village perched high on a hill, is one of the most popular tourist spots on the French Riviera as well as a village with a rich artistic life. As a matter of fact many exhibitions are on offer, particularly this year’s exhibition Artenciel (open sky exhibition of sculptures in the streets of the village). In order for you to visit this exhibition in the best conditions, the Domaine de la Bergerie offers to Gold Card holders 2 guided tours of the exhibition for a minimum stay of 3 nights and for all Camping Cheque customers, a free guided tour for every guided tour bought. If the visit of the Artenciel exhibition is impossible, the guided tour can be exchanged against any guided tour on offer by the tourist information center of Saint Paul de Vence (in Chagall’s footstep, guided tour of the village etc.) For further information on the Artenciel exhibition, you can visit the website of Saint Paul de Vence’s tourist information centre: www.saint-pauldevence.com; or get in touch directly with the campsite www.camping-domainedelabergerie.com, tel.: +33 4 93 58 09 36

ZOOM > B elgium > B elgisch Limburg > Wilhelm Tell

Wilhelm Tell 3 Seasons invites you to discover the province of Limburg (Belgium) and Wilhem Tell camping ground, in the company of its owner, Lode Nulmans. We met up for an interview: 3 Seasons: How did this camping ground become established? Lode Nulmans: My parents started the camping ground on a small plot of land in 1967. At the time, it was a field without any facilities. Little by little, they invested in high quality facilities, with an aquatic centre (Waterparadijs), a Jacuzzi for cloudy days, a wave pool, a water slide and an aquatic games area. Since 1998, I have been in charge of the camping ground with my wife Helga and our three children, Ine (11), Evi (10) and Lien (8). We seem to have our future all laid out for us. 3 Seasons: What are the main changes you have made since you arrived and what are your plans for the future? LN : In the last few years, we have been investing in sustainable development and the camping ground is now run on 100% green energy. In the years to come, we are going to build a new toilet block for the camping ground and add additional tourist camping spots (e.g. 16A for electricity). For a short time now we've also had free Wi-Fi in the camping ground. 3 Seasons: What do campers like most about the camping ground? LN: The spacious and peaceful camping spots, as well as our warm welcome and the pool. They

also like the location in Limburg. 3 Seasons: ...and in the region? LN: The 2,000 km of bike trails and the hiking trails in Hoge Kempen National Park. And the closeness of villages like Genk and Maastricht. Not forgetting the delicious Burgundy-style cooking in Limburg. 3 Seasons: What is the best season for visiting the area? LN: The camping ground is open all year round and every period has something different to offer. n

An impression of the Dolce Vita Tuscany.

DESTINATION Tuscany

Going through the hilly landscapes of Tuscany where grapes and olives grow, you will discover villages where it feels good to let time roll by but also an incredible density of architectural masterpieces, for many of them the legacy of Renaissance, such as the famous Tower of Pisa on Piazza dei Miracoli.

Florence The entire town is a real museum piece with some of the most beautiful monuments of the Renaissance and the most beautiful collection of Renaissance and medieval paintings in the world (The Uffizi Gallery). Here, the glorious past of this city, where the Medici family reigned , is manifest on every street corner. Its cathedral boasts a sumptuous facade of pink, white and green marble, ranked among the most famous monuments of the country and the Palazzio Vecchio, the traditional seat of the government of the town, overshadowing the magnificence of Florence in the 14th century. For these essential visits, remember to book your place in advance because the sheer numbers of masterpieces have an unfortunate and unpleasant consequence: the numbers

of tourists. Whatever their attractions, do not spend your entire stay in Florence visiting museums. Take the time to wander around the town on foot and take a walk along the Arno in particular.

The greatest problem, for those visiting Tuscany for the first time, is to succeed in balancing leisure time to enjoy the relaxed way of life that is a feature of the region by wandering around colourful market places or sipping a glass of Chianti in the shade of an olive tree on the paved square of a medieval village and visiting as many sites as possible. For a long time now, artistic talent has been a feature of the Tuscany region and there are very few places in the world that can boast such a plethora of masterpieces. Its towns, in particular, are teeming with architectural treasures handed down from the finest periods of the Middle Ages and the Italian Renaissance in particular. Here, every facade, each fountain and church in the historical town centres provide a new

opportunity to wonder. It was during the 14th and 15th centuries, when Italian art was illuminating Europe, that all the greatest creators of the time lived or passed through Tuscany. Sculptors, painters or architects, they all seemed to converge on this region turning it into a real museum piece. Although every town can boast one or more monuments of outstanding beauty, our favourite has to be Florence (see box) along with Pisa and Siena. At the Square of Miracles in Pisa, overshadowed by its famous leaning tower, there is a cathedral (Duomo) that was the largest in Europe at the time, the facade of which served as the model for Tuscany's Romanesque churches. When one looks carefully at the town, one is surprised to see that, although it owes its reputation to n n n

A fact that was not accounted for by Medieval architects. Consequently, before the tower began to lean, the Duomo and the Palazzo Agostini are also leaning, as well as many of the city's other churches. This, however, takes nothing away from their majesty. As for Siena, this is a medieval town where Gothic features triumph over Renaissance art. Its cathedral, in particular, is a prime example of the genre. However, the most interesting aspect of the town is its maze of paved streets and its historical centre where cars are banned wherever possible. Although one can visit Siena all year round and get the same enjoyment, visiting the town during the Palio, the legendary horse race where Siena's different districts confront one another, is a unique experience (July 2 and August 16). For those who are not afraid of

crowds. Near to these large cities, Tuscany has a host of small medieval towns and villages that are often perched on top of hills. Although of variable architectural interest, they often have a charm that is more authentic than the large towns. However, the towns are only one of the many aspects of Tuscany. Yet this little piece of Italy has 3 national parks: the Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi (the largest and best preserved forest in Italy), the Parco Nazionale dell Apennino Toscano-Emiliano (that includes the Apennine Mountains) and the Parco Nazionale dell'Arcipelago Toscano, the largest marine park in Italy. According to

legend, this is the birthplace of Venus, who occasionally threw jewels into the sea. These became the islands of the archipelago off the coast of Piombino, the largest of which is the Isle of Elba. Spain and Portugal. To those living in the rest of Europe, the two nations of the Iberian peninsula may seem strangely similar. However, other than their geographical proximity, both countries undoubtedly have more differences between them than similarities. Despite its glorious colonial past, the history of Spain was directed towards the Mediterranean and Europe while the attentions of its more isolated Lusitanian neighbour were always focused on the Atlantic, like those of the seafarers' Bilbao wives who lost their husbands to the sea. 3 Seasons invites Porto you on a voyage of discovery Madrid between Porto and Madrid, to explore the exuberance of Lisbonne Spain and the discretion of Séville Portugal. adrid is the starting point for our tour. Visiting Madrid inevitably invites comparisons with Barcelona. Undoubtedly not as flamboyant as its eternal Catalonian rival, the city boasts an architectural elegance with wide avenues that provide a permanent reminder that the Castilian city is the seat of royal Spanish power. In addition to the superb monuments and royal gardens, Madrid will delight art lovers with the plethora of museums and prestigious collections that, in and of themselves, are worth

a stay lasting several days. Admittedly not as popular with tourists as the beaches of the Costa Brava or the Costa del Sol, Spain's countryside is no less worth a visit. Indeed, quite the contrary is true. When leaving Madrid heading westwards towards Portugal, we cross some very beautiful countryside dotted with authentic and charming villages such as Hervas and its historical Jewish district with their adobe houses that line the steep alleyways, or Caparra that is famous for its arch built by the 1 st century

Romans. Many of these historic sites are highlighted along the Way of St. James linking Seville and Compostela, known as the Via de la Plata. Other than Salamanca and its extraordinary heritage, the land stretching out between Madrid and the Portuguese border also shelters several villages that are worth visiting. We particularly appreciate Tordesillas. little later at Lisbon, we head northwards aiming for Porto. On the road we make a stop at Coimbra to visit the ancient capital of the country, built atop a hill, dotted with gardens and historical monuments. Before venturing into Porto itself, we come across the river Douro, pacing along its banks at Tordesillas. It has sculpted a meandering valley with steep slopes where the vines that produce Portugal's famous wine are grown before flowing into the Atlantic at Porto, having streamed past the bustling quaysides of Ribeira or Vila Nova de Gaia. ISTRIA Skirted by the seaa and separated from the rest of the continent by a mountain range, Istria could be a country in its own right. As the gateway to Croatia, it is different from the rest of the country because of its dual culture shared with Italy and Croatia. In addition to the widespread use of the Italian language, the region also has many of the features of the Mediterranean world with its landscapes, covered in vineyards, wheat crops and olive trees and its coastline bathed in turquoise waters. 3 Seasons invites you to explore this land shaped like a heart, is archaeological treasures and its vast sandy beaches.

ore than any other region of Croatia, Istria is a link between the Slavonic and Latin worlds. Indeed, on the outskirts of the towns, you will find signs written in both Croat and Italian, since bilingualism has been officially recognised since 1995. It must be said that the Italian-speaking community is prominent throughout the land with a population in the thousands. The close proximity with Italy is strong, but Istria has been affected by other influences throughout the centuries, particularly that of the Hapsburgs and Byzantium. This multiple influences can be seen in the region's architecture. Consequently, at Pula, one can visit one of the largest amphitheatres still standing from the

The picturesque and colourful fishing harbours also betray the close ties that exist between Istria and Italy. The town of Pula in particular, symbolises this blend of cultures. Founded, according to legend, by the people of Colchis who attempted to recapture Jason and the Argonauts after they had stolen the Golden Fleece, the city was Illyrian, Roman, Gothic, Byzantine and even Venetian at various times through its history. It even became the main port of Austria at one time.

ne of the main tourist attractions of Istria are its shores lined with picturesque villages and seaside resorts. Most of the beaches are located on the West and South coasts, as the East coast is much more rugged. On the Western side, the green hills flatten out towards the sea to form deep bays, that decorate the coastline with beautiful sandy beaches that are great for relaxing and bathing. Large residential complexes have been built along the coastline, but some villages have managed to retain an authentic laid back Italian character and are worth a visit. Of the noteworthy towns, Rovinj is of particular interest. Its colourful old town, built on an island connected to the continent, is covered

with narrow and deep intertwining streets and the facades of the houses of the North coast look as if they are falling into the sea. Further inland, the landscape becomes more hilly and the green slopes are covered with vineyards and olive trees. On the hilltops, fortified villages dating back to the Middle Ages still watch over the valleys where wheat is grown. This plentiful land with its Italian influences, has resulted in Istria being one of the great gourmet regions of Croatia with luxurious restaurants as well as small inns serving simple yet delicious meals. Le Mas de Champel A panoramic view of the Ardèche 3 Seasons invites you to the banks of the river Eyrieux in a valley dotted with villages full of character. The Mas de Champel Kawan Village awaits you with its terraced pitches and its panoramic views of the Ardeche mountains. Franck and Valérie Coellier were no beginners when they took over responsibilities at the Mas de Champel in 2008. They had managed the Lac de Panthier, in Burgundy, also part of Camping Cheque scheme, for 10 years. When they decided to move further South, they fell under the spell of this site, arranged around a traditional building of the Ardeche region nestled at the centre of the Eyrieux valley. Without taking anything away from the authentic feel of the site, they have added their own touches improving its facilities with a restaurant built under the shelter of the old stone building that has a terrace with a view, a leisure swimming pool for the children as well as a well-being area that opened this year. They also have an authentic sense of hospitality, making the Mas de Champel a family campsite in every sense of the word: a family-owned campsite that

is designed with families in mind, particularly young children. The site's greatest advantage, however, is its exceptional setting. The verdant shaded pitches stretch out over the terraces overlooking the Eyrieux river, giving campers unobstructed views of the beautiful Ardeche countryside and the enchanting village of les Ollières sur Eyrieux, located at the campsite's edge. Not to mention the river, that is great for fly-fishing and canoe trips and flows alongside the campsite providing campers with a private beach that is perfect for bathing during the hot summer afternoons. n

restaurant is also a big asset. In winter, the free ski bus takes campers up to the Zillertall-Arena slopes in just 15 minutes; one of the biggest ski resorts in Austria.

3 Seasons: How did Hofer camping ground get started? Hofer: The camping ground was created in 1948 on our father's (Guntram Hofer) farm. It was one of the first camping ground's in Tyrol. Some of the original campers, from the first few years still come camping here. The camping ground has changed a lot since back then. Especially, the toilet facilities and the restaurant.

3 Seasons: What is your favourite time of year for visiting Zillertall? Hofe : The first weekend in May is always a special time of year, with the "Gauderfest", the spring festival. They make a special beer for the occasion: Gauder-Bock. There are stands with local arts and crafts and on the Sunday there is a parade in traditional costumes that passes in front of the camping ground. Zillertall is also called: 'The Valley of Folk Music". There are a lot of festivals and concerts from May to September. n

3 Seasons: Do you have any plans for changes in the near future? Hofer: The latest development in the camping ground was a redesign based on Feng Shui principles, in harmony with the 5 elements: earth, metal, water, wood and fire. The next development will be to offer gas outlets in all of our camping spots and to build a small spa. 3 Seasons: What appeals to clients the most in your camping ground? Hofer: Our proximity to Zell shopping village. We are only 200 metres to the town centre, but we are still in the countryside. I think people like the camping ground's family atmosphere too. In the camping ground and the restaurant, we are constantly in contact with our clients, which means we have a close relationship. Our

3 Seasons n째118 - 38

Since the very beginning, Camping Cheque has always been a low season formula. For most camping grounds in the network, the low season excludes the months of July and August. However, as the years have gone by, we have seen an increasing number of Camping grounds accepting Camping Cheques for longer and longer periods, which are usually considered "high season". So now 3 Seasons would like to put a spotlight on a few of our summer destinations accepting Camping Cheques for 30 days or under, from the 1st of July to the 31st of August.

La Source Aveyron

LOCAL SITES OF INTEREST

Take a breath of fresh air at the Source

Conques 60 km

The construction of the Millau viaduct made it easier to cross the Aveyron region by motorway. But 3 Seasons would like to invite you to stray from the main road links to explore the hidden charms of this region from the lovely campsite of the Source. The Source is one of those campsites where a little effort will be rewarded in spades. This is not a stopover that you stumble upon by chance on the way to Spain or the Languedoc coast. Off the beaten track, you get there by crossing the stone villages and hilly landscapes between Cantal and Aubrac. But, at the end of the road, a reward awaits you. As you approach the campsite, the Lake of Sarrans appears, nestled in a preserved natural setting. Jean Soulenq, founder of the campsite in the 1980s, successfully took advantage of what others would have considered to be a technical drawback. Consequently, the Source, located on the slopes that drop down towards the lake, is situated on terraces that give campers a feeling of space and superb views overlooking the surrounding hills. Since the beginning of the 1990s, his daughter, Marielle, and her husband, Stephane, have taken over the

establishment, carefully preserving the authentic character of this site that is a haven of nature and peace. There are many reasons for staying at the Source. Some will appreciate the calm sunny afternoons, spent resting in the shade of a tree, taking in the view. Others will enjoy the countless walking opportunities in the Northern Aveyron (and particularly two paths that start at the campsite) or even the bathing opportunities in the lake or the campsite swimming pool. Everyone, however, will relish the high standard of the hospitality and the unspoilt beauty of what resembles a little corner of paradise. n
