IN DEPTH Our campsites are committed to the environment Because the accommodation does not have a high impact on the surroundings and nature is central to the location, camping has always been a green way of spending your holidays. However, this isn't enough. To further commit to protecting the environment and sustainable development, many campsites in Europe have decided to use green materials, reduce their CO2 emissions and look into clean energy sources. Here is a short overview of some of our campsites that are most committed to respecting the environment.

Like a finger pointing towards America, Brittany is a rock standing up to the furious assaults of the Atlantic winds and waves that have sculpted its coastline over the centuries. Sea and land come together everywhere to create wild and unusual landscapes, where fishing ports nestle and still reverberate with the stories of sailors who have set off to conquer the oceans. 3 Seasons invites you to travel in a motorhome around this rocky coastline, as well as into the vast expanses of moorland steeped in legends.
GOLD CARD RALLY Heritage, culture and gastronomy For several years, Camping Cheque suspended the rallies that had been key to its success in the early years. For an exceptional rally, exclusively reserved to its Gold Card customers, Camping Cheque and 3 campsites of the network are revisiting this tradition and invite you to a 12 day discovery of the charms of South West France. Be tempted!

Rallies are back
When I was a boy, at that age when your only worry is about missing your favourite cartoon programme, I had various, ever-changing dreams of what I would for a career. I just needed to watch Indiana Jones to have my sights set on archaeology and any visit to a wildlife park turned me into a vet. I imagined myself in turn as a cowboy, an architect and even a designer of video games. However, when we took to the road on holiday with my parents, the caravan hitched up and the boot loaded, I should have never thought that travelling in a caravan or a motorhome would one day be my job. Many people envy this occupation, constantly repeating that I am always on holiday. It is true that I am privileged to have this job, which allows me to travel all across Europe. Nevertheless, it is not always ...some of my best easy. In fact, although travelling memories as editor-inthrough the most beautiful regions chief of 3 Seasons were of the continent and taking photos is a very pleasant occupation, a t h o s e ra l l i e s w h e n I degree of solitude can sometimes spent time with other creep in during these long trips. It is not the end of the world but rally participants for a sometimes I should like to have a few days... bit of company when driving along the motorways of France, Spain or Norway. Also, some of my best memories as editor-in-chief of 3 Seasons were those rallies when I spent time with other rally participants for a few days, in order to prepare a report for your magazine. I really enjoyed spending a bit of time with some of you during meals at campsite restaurants, on bus trips and also during the many tasting sessions that peppered the programme. It was all imbued with the warm and convivial atmosphere that characterised Camping Cheque rallies. So in some way I envy those who will be taking part in the Gold Card rally in the spring, the first Camping Cheque rally for a few years. By spending a few days in the south-west of France, they will discover everything that has made these rallies the success that they have been for several years. Moreover, if this latest one is a success, it will just be the first in a long series. There is therefore no doubt that I would find many reasons to join rally participants for part of their stay.

LETTERS FROM OUR READERS
w
Would you like to share stories of your anecdotes about your
experience
h o l i d a y s spent at one of the network's campsites? Do you have
a comment about 3 Seasons Magazine? Do you have a to solicit
using Camping Cheques? Or share
question to ask, or would you like
advice of some kind? 3 Seasons is listening. Send us your letters, all
will be read, and some will be published. Since the beginning of the 2010 season, many of you have written and asked questions about changes in Camping Cheque. In the 2010 Spring edition of the 3 Seasons Magazine, we wanted to answer several of these.
The price of a Camping Cheque has increased by 1€, why?
«
3 Seasons / Camping Cheque Answer The success of Camping Cheque is first and foremost due to the fact that every participant in this programme enjoys its benefits. Campsites are pleased to welcome more customers in the low season and understand that they must adapt their prices and offer the same service as the rest of the year. Customers benefit from this discount, the safety of the system and the qualitative selection of campsites. For four years, the public price of campsites has increased steadily but not their revenue in low season with Camping Cheques. Many constantly invest and increase the quality of their facilities and infrastructure. For 2 years we have refused to increase the price in line with the sectors' and other low season service providers. To ensure durability of the system, it was no longer reasonable to wait another year.
«
Almost 600 campsites is a wide selection, but why not further increase the range?
«
«
3 Seasons / Camping Cheque Answer We are a small team, touring Europe takes time! The campsites are selected, we must visit them in detail to know what they are like. Also, we do not seek to be exhaustive. We designed Camping Cheque for peace of mind: when you stay in any one of our campsites, you should not have any bad surprises and be assured that the site will meet our criteria for quality and hygiene. We also believe that the friendliness and service offered by the campsite owners are of paramount importance. This is why we strive to offer only the best campsites. You can help us increase our selection by helping us to discover a gem. Send us your suggestions: suggestion@hotmail.com.
However, one euro represents less than a 2% increase per year, a lot less than the rise in prices in campsites in the same period. Camping Cheque remains an advantageous formula: up to 60% less than the normal price.
«
Why pay for the Gold Card when the Silver Card is free?

The Silver Card is currently free with the guide, and like the Gold Card, it is a way of paying for your nights electronically. However, the Silver Card does not offer all the advantages of the Gold Card: discounts on processing fees, cheques valid 4 years, free renewal, 3 Seasons magazines, Guide free every year, for three years etc. The Gold Card gives access to a "privilege club", whereas the Silver Card is only a means of payment.

Following Isabelle Huppert last time, this year it will be the director of Ed Wood and Edward Scissorhands who will preside over a jury responsible for finding a successor to Michael Haeneke’s The White Ribbon. Apart from the chance to see on screen some of the great films of 2010, the Festival is above all a celebration of the cinema and the opportunity to spot some of the greatest stars of the silver screen, such as Georges Clooney or Brad Pitt, on the famous steps of the Palais des Festivals; you may also come across less famous but much more accessible actors on the streets of Cannes and above all experience the energy and the madness that brings the city to life during these 10 days. Beer Festival – Munich

Caption: This year, one of Europe’s greatest events is celebrating its 200th anniversary. 3 Seasons invites you to the Munich Beer Festival. EVERY YEAR SINCE 1810, IN SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER, THE CITY OF MUNICH HAS COME ALIVE TO THE BEAT OF ITS BEER FESTIVAL, THE FAMOUS OKTOBERFEST. THIS YEAR, ON THE OCCASION OF THE 200TH EVENT, THE OKTOBERFEST IS GETTING READY TO CELEBRATE ITS ANNIVERSARY IN STYLE. WHETHER YOU LIKE BEER OR JUST WANT TO ENJOY THE ATMOSPHERE OF THIS HUGE FESTIVAL, THIS AUTUMN WILL BE THE ONCE -IN-A-LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY TO DISCOVER BAVARIA. he origin of the beer festival goes back to 1810. To celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Louis 1st with Princess Thérèse of SaxeHildburghausen, the citizens of Munich were invited to the festivities in a meadow that was then at the city gates. This meadow has since been renamed Theresienwiese, the Meadow of Thérèse, in honour of the bride. The festivities concluded with a horse race and it was decided to run it again the following year. The following

year, an agricultural festival was added to the horse race. The horse race has since disappeared but the agricultural festival has always taken place, every three years. It was only in 1818 that the first merry-go-round appeared, then, in 1896, huge tents were added by the city's brewers. The festival has not stopped expanding since then and it is now the largest popular festival in the world, with some 6 million visitors going there every year.
The festival starts on a Saturday in September (18 September this year) with a procession by brewers through the city streets and by the tapping of the first barrel of beer. It lasts 16 days. On the first Sunday there is a second procession with traditional costumes, brass bands, carriages, etc. and on the second Sunday a huge concert is staged by all the groups participating in the festival at the foot of the statue of Bavaria, a Bavarian romantic allegory, which stands at the top of Theresienwiese. The tents where beer is served throughout the 16 days are run by the 14 major breweries in Munich. You can drink beer in Maß, huge one-litre tankards (for a price that varies between 8 and 9 euros). Given that the Oktoberfest is becoming more and more popular each year, it is advisable to book a table before arriving. All the addresses of bars are available on the Munich tourist office website. n

A FEW FIGURES The beer festival on its own represents 30% of annual beer sales for Munich breweries (between 6 and 7 million litres over the 16 days). Some 12,000 people work there, including 1,600 waiters who are on hand to welcome the 6 million people who argue over the 100,000 seats.
A TRADITIONAL BEER Bavarian brewers have been brewing their beer since the 16th century, following very precise rules. In fact, a law dating from 1516 and enacted by Duke William IV only allows them to brew using water, barley and hops.

n n n Villefranche as well as Najac and its fortress. In the area of the gorges, these villages nestle in wild landscapes. This is the case for the delightfully charming mediaeval village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, which has numerous listed monuments, one of these being the 12th century town hall, one of the oldest examples of civil architecture in France; it is especially so for Penne, whose castle, standing on a rocky outcrop, seems to defy the laws of gravity. Apart from the architectural evidence, people in this region have left behind a long tradition of fine eating, with tasty specialities such as aligot (mashed potato with garlic and cheese), fouace (oven-cooked bread), the famous Roquefort cheese in the Ruthénois area and duck-based recipes (conserves, foie gras, etc.) in the western section. It makes your stay even more delectable. n

Leaving the Channel coast, we then venture into the interior of the region to find two cities with a wealth of history: Fougères, a walled city dominated by a mediaeval castle, and Rennes, the capital of Brittany. You need to take your time in the latter to appreciate its maze of mediaeval streets and the elegance of its 18 th-century buildings. Apart from its symbolic monuments, and
notably the palace of the Parliament of Brittany, which has been superbly restored after the fire that severely damaged it in 1994, the city is also rated for its nightlife entertainment. Over the following days we continue to delve into Breton history and architecture through some of its finest cities; first of all comes Dinan and its old town, hemmed in by its stone walls, and then the superb pirate city of St Malo. (We shall not expand here on St Malo: for that we refer you to the article that appeared in 3 Seasons no.113).

attention. This chain of "mountains" (even though the word is a bit of an exaggeration given that it is 384 metres above sea level at its highest point) has sandstone and granitetopped peaks rounded by erosion called "Ménez" and sharp peaks, pointing skywards, or "Roc'hs". Austere yet spellbinding at the same time, covered in heathland swept by the wind and only brightened up by the yellow and mauve touches of colour of the gorse and heather, the Monts d'Arrée are home to many natural species, notably the Drosera, a very rare carnivorous plant. However, you need a trained eye to see it. After spending several days in the region, it needed a guide to show us how to find one. In the evening, when the mist takes hold of these desert landscapes, the atmosphere is tinged with mystery and you understand how the region gave rise to so many legends that live on today. Indeed it is said that here lived Ankou (the personification

of death in Breton legends) and that it was the location of the Youdig (the chasm that serves as the gateway to Hell). Leaving the world of legend, we immerse ourselves in the history of Brittany by breaking our journey in Cornouaille. This region, which formerly extended well beyond its current borders, was in the Middle Ages the Kingdom and then the Duchy of Brittany. Quimper was its capital at the time. The city has also retained a rich heritage from that era, which you can appreciate by wandering down its narrow streets of half-timbered houses, which extend around the very beautiful Gothic cathedral of Saint-Corentin. From Quimper we pick up the coast road again but this time head eastwards. We stop at Pont-Aven, where the many art galleries are still evidence of the position that painting occupies in the city, since Paul Gauguin and other artists came here to live n n n

n n n and work in the middle of the 19th century. On leaving Pont-Aven we are back on the road taking us to Carnac, where once again history defined the region. This small Breton city is home to some of the most impressive megalithic stone alignments (menhirs), which appear to date from the Middle Neolithic period (approximately 3,000 years BC). The two most spectacular alignments are those at Menec and Kermario (a dozen parallel lines stretching for more than a kilometre). The Museum of Prehistory and megalith centre help us to find out a little bit more about prehistory and the various theories that abound with regard to these alignments. To the great disappointment of a science fiction fan such as me, no record has been kept of any theories suggesting extraterrestrials. Apart from its historical importance, Carnac is also an excellent starting point for exploring the Quiberon Peninsula and its truly beautiful wild coast, or the charming village of Auray nestling at the end of a narrow inlet that is an extension of the Gulf of Morbihan. Not far away, Vannes with its mediaeval old town protected by its ramparts offers us an alternative destination.
Our last stop takes us to La Brière Regional Park. The term "Breton" is no longer applicable, however, since we have left the administrative area of Brittany to cross over into the Pays de la Loire. It is nevertheless difficult to distinguish a border that would deprive us of excursions into historic Brittany. This park is made up in the main of channels and aquatic plants and is the second largest area of marshland in France after the Camargue. It is therefore best visited by boat and is bordered by the Guérande Peninsula and its salt marshes, which extend as far as the eye can see, like a mosaic of mirrors. Nantes awaits us on the other side of La Brière Nature Park. However, the big question that remains unanswered is whether Nantes is in Brittany or the Pays de la Loire. Although it was previously part of Brittany (the Castle of the Dukes of Brittany is also to be found here), it is now attached to the Pays de la Loire. Not wishing to get further involved in this argument, we finish our tour here, leaving Nantes for another article. n

he history of Santiago goes back to the 9th century. Legend tells it that a star helped shepherds discover the resting place of St. James the Apostle, the Spanish evangelist. In those days of the Reconquest of the country occupied by the Moors, the Spanish church was happy that this symbolic figure should appear; it made him the patron saint of the Reconquista and built a basilica on the apostle's tomb. It was, however, in the 11th century that the city really came into its own. With the Turkish presence making pilgrimage to the Holy Land hazardous, many believers fell back on Santiago. Its success would never be denied and the city was enhanced during the following centuries with sumptuous Baroque and Neoclassical religious buildings, which merited the city being listed

We begin our walk in the park of Santo Domingo de Bonaval, formerly the farm and cemetery of the Dominican convent of Santo Domingo de Bonaval, which currently houses the Museum of the Galician People (1) and where you can still admire the city’s only Gothic church. THE SCALLOP SHELL, EMBLEM OF ST JAMES Legend has it that a knight was thrown into the water by his bolting horse. St James is supposed to have saved him and he emerged covered in shells. The shell has therefore become the emblem of St James and many pilgrims wear it attached to their bag or their hat. It is also used to mark out the ways of St James.

art in Spain. Built by the Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza, this monument reflects the pronounced taste of this city, steeped in history, for contemporary architecture. You can indeed also find in Santiago many very fine buildings created by talented 20 th-century artists, such as the Trisca socio-cultural centre, designed by John Heiduk, the Sar multi-purpose sports complex, by Josep Maria de Arenaza and Joaquin Pujol, or even the unusual music school by Anton Garcia Abril. From the park, we venture into the old town through the Porta do Camiño, the gate used by pilgrims who have followed the French way to the tomb of St. James. The French way is the itinerary most rooted in tradition. It was firmly defined in the 12th century in the Codex Calixtinus,
the essential work for the pilgrimage of St. James. We then go up Casas Reais, a street that runs alongside some very pretty buildings, notably the Neoclassical parish church of Nosa Señora do Camiño (4) and then the imposing chapel of As Animas (5), both built at the end of the 18 th century. Crossing Cervantes Square (Praza de Cervantes) (6), which was the city's first major trading area, we can then appreciate the Neoclassical church of San Bieito. We leave the itinerary of the French way for a few yards to dive down a small side street, the Calella de Xerusalén, which leads us into the square of San Martiño Pinario (7), where the majestic facade of the eponymous convent awaits us; the latter was arranged like an altarpiece, notably with a double-flight staircase. Inside this building, constructed in the 17th
and 18th centuries, lies one of the finest cloisters in Spain. We leave the monastery through its main façade that overlooks the Praza de Immaculada (8), alongside which is the cathedral (9), the ultimate goal of the pilgrimage of St. James. Even though we have not crossed Europe on foot, as many pilgrims still do today, it is easy to understand the feelings experienced by these pilgrims when they arrive in front of this splendid building; although built between the 11th and 13th centuries, it n n n 3 Seasons - 33

We go round the cathedral to go in through the entrance located in the Praza do Obradoiro (10), a superb square surrounded by monuments that compete with each other in elegance. The cathedral shows its best side with the facade of the Obradoiro, a richly sculpted masterpiece of Baroque architecture. In holy years (when the day of St. James falls on a Sunday), pilgrims are allowed to enter the cathedral by the holy door, which is located on the Praza da Quintana and which is only open in those years. The interior of the cathedral has no reason to be envious of its facade, in particular with its Pórtico de la Gloria, a very beautiful sculpture created at the end of the 12th century by Master Mateo. Behind it stands a statue of Mateo, the "saint of bumps", which is said to bestow intelligence and memory on anyone who bumps their head against it. However, it seems to be that you gain nothing apart from bumps from this exercise. The cathedral's other surprise is its 3 Seasons - 34

incense-burner, the Botafumeiro, the most impressive in the world. It is, however, only used on certain occasions, notably in holy years. The rest of the time it can be seen in the cathedral's museum. Not far from the cathedral, we come across the very fine College of Saint Xerome (11) and its 15th-century gate, before continuing on our itinerary towards the romantic Alameda Park (12), where we end our tour of the old town of Santiago. This park, and particularly along the Paseo da Ferradura, is one of the best spots in the city for taking photographs of the old town and the cathedral. It is a view that must seem like a welldeserved reward to brave pilgrims. n
The rural produce market, the Mercado de Abastos (14), is the second most visited attraction after the cathedral. In fact, there are only 100 pitches. These are very spacious with an average surface area of 140 m2. Some of these pitches even have their own sanitary facilities. The campsite services have also been improved, with freshly renovated sanitary facilities equipped with private washrooms, a restaurant serving excellent food and even a swimming pool and sauna. Campers appreciate the modest size of this site, where they are not considered just as numbers, as is reflected in comments taken from prestigious guides such as that of the ANWB (Royal Dutch Touring Club). On the occasion of its 25th anniversary, the campsite is in the process of putting together a programme of festivities. MEETING WITH MARGHERITA FACCHINI, OWNER OF THE SAN FRANCESCO CAMPSITE IN ITALY recreate the atmosphere of the former campsite, so as to let those who never knew that era to experience it. 3 Seasons: What is it that people particularly like about your campsite? Margherita Facchini: It's the wonderful setting of the campsite, situated at the gateway to the Sirmione Peninsula, where the sunsets are superb and where nature offers a relaxing backdrop. 3 Seasons: How did the San Francesco campsite come into being? Margherita Facchini: The campsite was set up by my father in 1963 and he took care of it until 2002. He was always at the forefront in the field and always had innovative ideas. When I took up the torch in 2002, I tried to bring a more modern touch, by focusing on training my staff and renovating the facilities. In 9 years, the campsite has changed in appearance, with the larger pitches, more services and particular attention paid to the disabled, green spaces, etc.
3 Seasons: What is it that people like most about the region? Margherita Facchini: The campsite is quite close to Verona, the amphitheatres and the Opera in Venice, the Dolomites and the mediaeval villages of the Moraine Hills. The best times to visit are May and September, when the weather is mild and the influx of tourists is limited. n
THINGS TO DO AND SEE

Further information: www.veronatuttintorno.it
Mantua This little city has a quite particular charm of its own with a rich heritage created by some of the most prestigious artists of the Renaissance. Its Palazzo Ducale, in particular, is well worth a visit. Further information: http://turismo.comune.mantova.it
3 Seasons: Do you have projects for the future? Margherita Facchini: On the one hand, I'm working on a project to set up a carfree mobile home village and on the other hand I'm working on the idea of creating a modern campsite but one that could

Zmar Eco Camping Resort – Portugal Located in Algarve, Zmar Eco Camping Resort (p.605, 2010 Site Directory) opened very recently. As its name suggests, it was designed taking into account the need to preserve the environment and blend in completely with the surroundings. The campsite has been built using renewable materials such as wood and stone where possible. Wood has many advantages (thermal comfort, acoustic insulation, anti-earthquake properties, easy maintenance, etc). The wood used comes from certified forests where the growth rate of trees is higher than that of trees cut down. Objects that had to be made out of plastic were made using recycled plastic.
to facilitate air circulation to reduce the use of air conditioning. When energy is needed, it comes mainly from solar panels which are particularly productive in this region, where the sun shines over 300 days per year. To reduce consumption, the toilet block is of course equipped with movement detectors for the lights, the taps have water saving devices and eco-bulbs are used.
To save energy, the buildings were built in areas that make the most of natural shade and the windows fitted
www.zmar.eu (You will also find an application that works out your CO2 emissions.)
The campsite has its own water treatment centre to recycle water and use it for watering plants. To find out more about the environmental commitments of the Zmar campsite, check out their website:
Les Gorges du Chambon – France Les Gorges du Chambon, located in a beautiful natural area in the Charente region of France, (p.100, 2010 Site Directory) has made the environment their main concern for years, and every aspect of the campsite reflects this preoccupation. The labels awarded to the campsite in the last few years attest to this commitment (Clef Verte in 2002, European Eco-Label in 2009) as does its participation in several ecological associations (Via Natura since 2006, creation of the first Eco-Label certified club in France in the Poitou-Charente region). Jacques Petit, the owner, is strongly committed to the protection of the environment, and shows this by respecting the site on which the campsite is built, using organic products, choosing local suppliers, informing guests, a charter and reducing water and electricity consumption, etc. To enable customers to enjoy this commitment, an organic market comes to the campsite and the restaurant menu includes at least 20% organic products. To compensate for the CO2 emissions of guests coming on holidays, les Gorges du Chambon takes part in a project in Benin where mangroves are replanted according to the quantity of CO2 to be compensated. 3 Seasons - 40

Wilhelm Tell – Belgium This year, the Wilhelm Tell campsite (p. 273 of the 2010 guide) has equipped itself with solar panels enabling it to produce 28% of the electricity needed to run the campsite. Thanks to a tracking system, some panels follow the sun all day for an even higher yield. For more information about the Wilhelm Tell campsite: www.wilhelmtell.com

Sérignan Plage Nature – France
River Dart Country Park – Angleterre
In the Sérignan Plage Nature campsite (p.612, 2010 Site Directory), on the seaside South of Béziers, ecology is not a recent concern born of the current fashion for all things green. Indeed, 45 years ago the campsite decided to invest in a water treatment system that combines infiltration and evaporation in the ground with plant transpiration: trees ensure half of the water treatment. This system has also enabled the growth of a wooded park which provides shade for 1400 pitches at the heart of coastal plain with salty soil which normally cannot support much vegetation. This system has many advantages, both for the campsite (extra space thanks to underground irrigation, softening of the water table which encourages vegetation, low investment and running costs) and for campers (landscaping, good quality sea water). This system was picked in 2000 by the European Commission from 900 projects to be a Life Environment project (The Financial instrument for the environment).
To preserve the natural beauty of the area in which the River Dart Country Park campsite is located, (p.317, 2010 Site Directory), the owners decided to install their own hydro-electric generator to produce electricity using the river that runs alongside the campsite, thus reducing the campsite's CO2 emissions. This generator supplies enough electricity for 9 months of the year and significantly reduces consumption during the summer, when the campsite is at its busiest. This system has been rewarded by a DEBI Award (Devon Environmental Business Initiative) in 2007 and the BCE Environmental Award in 2009. In the first two years of use, 600 tons of CO2 emissions have been saved.
For more information about Sérignan Plage Nature and the GEOASSEV project, you can check out the campsite's website: www.leserignannature.com and the project's website: www.reevanver.org.
De Luttenberg – Netherlands On the doorstep of the Sallandse Heuvelrug national park, the de Luttenberg campsite (p.286, 2010 Site Directory) benefits from a leafy environment. To help preserve its environment, in 2006 the campsite built toilet blocks with plant-based insulation. The toilets have a living roof, which is an efficient and natural type of insulation, enabling the building to blend into the landscape of this site and its wide pitches. For more information about the de Luttenberg campsite: www.luttenberg.nl
European Ecolabel The European Ecolabel was created in 1992 and rewards companies that respect the environment. The selection criteria for this label are very strict and guarantee the true commitment of those who are awarded it. The criteria include the impact of the product on the environment during its entire life cycle, from design to recycling. Several campsites have been awarded this label, including some Camping Cheque campsites: Alpencamp (p.457), Cevedale campsite (p.486), Les Gorges du Chambon (p.100), Due Laghi (p.488), La Brande (p.92), Vidor Campsite (p.483), Elbsee (p.396), FDM Holbaek Fjord Campsite (p.357), FDM Hegedal Strand Campsite (p.345). For more information about the eco-label: www.eco-label.com

Kawan Village le Couspeau – France The Kawan Village le Couspeau (p.219, 2010 Site Directory), in © swiss-images.ch / Christof Provencal Drôme, has built anSonderegger ecologically friendly toilet block made from non-treated wood (only the foundations are made out of concrete), with a solar panel heating system and a green roof so that the building blends into its natural environment. For more information on the Kawan Village le Couspeau: www.couspeau.com
Camping Wildhoeve Wildhoeve campsite, which received the gold Clef Verte (green key) in March 2010 and the Alan Rogers Country Award in January 2010 (p. 288 of the 2010 guide) is a resolutely green campsite. To reduce its CO2 emissions, the campsite has decided to reduce its energy consumption as much as possible. The outside pool is heated with solar panels and the campsite has just bought 3 wood granule stoves to heat its indoor pool. The pool no longer emits any CO2. More information on this campsite: www.wildhoeve.nl
Kawan Nature The chain Kawan Villages has decided to make ecology a forefront issue and has created the label Kawan Nature. To be awarded this label, campsites must commit to preserving the environment by sorting rubbish, using recyclable products and environment friendly cleaning products, as well as fitting water saving devices in the toilets. To promote their natural environment, the campsites also put up bird nesting boxes and information boards presenting the different species of trees on site. IN DEPTH w Héliomonde – France
Rivendale – England
With 116 acres at the heart of a preserved natural environment, the Héliomonde campsite (p.608, 2010 Site Directory) has exceptional surroundings which it wishes to preserve. The campsite therefore has a very active conservation policy which raises the awareness of users, monitors water consumption and manages refuse carefully. It also promotes local produce through responsible purchasing, trains staff, places under 10 families per acre, rents electrical vehicles, animals (goats and sheep) are used to maintain fallow land and cars are forbidden to drive in the campsite, etc. In the future, the campsite wants to develop solar energy.
The English campsite Rivendale (p.309, 2010 Site Directory) has won 11 David Bellamy Awards, a prize that rewards conservation efforts on English campsites. Water recycling, energy savings, the promotion of local products, biodiversity, etc are taken into account for these awards. Buildings are heated by a stove which uses wood scraps, almost all food is purchased within a 20 km radius of the campsite and a pond has been dug to encourage the return of certain wild life and plants, as well as other measures. hose who knew the Camping Cheque rallies a few years ago and their predecessors, the French Flavour Holidays, know that what made the charm of the rallies was a clever mix of culture, heritage and good food, with a warm atmosphere which favours contact. For this Gold Card rally, we have decided to go back to the traditional formula with a 12 day programme full of visits and tastings and to do that we have decided to take you to South-west France, in the Gers, Landes and Atlantic areas. As always, the programme will include fascinating visits, including the discovery of beautiful towns and sites such as Auch, a medieval town listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, the Flarans Abbey, Pau and the Spanish town of San Sebastian, as well as walks in authentic landscapes such as the Jurançon vineyards and Cantabria in the North of Spain. Of course these visits will be livened up by tastings of local products (Armagnac, Jurançon, goat's cheese, etc.), picnics, traditional meals in the campsite restaurants and events such as Bearn songs. However, the highlight of this rally will be the time you spend with the owners of the 3 campsites which have decided to welcome you. They will share their passion of their regions and their good humour will rub off on you. After 12 days, you will have a head full of memories and plenty of new friends with whom you can share your next holiday.

1. Purchase. I order my digital Camping Cheques from my customary agent, stating that I am a Gold Card holder. My cheques are then credited onto my customer account, waiting to be downloaded onto your Gold Card via the payment terminal. This transaction takes place on the first campsite visited. 2. Downloading. On arrival at a Camping Cheque member campsite, I request the downloading of my digital Camping Cheques. I will be handed a ticket stating my balance; my digital cheques are now ready to be used for payment.
1. Earning the Points. I earn Loyalty Points exclusively with my digital Camping Cheques. 2. Collecting the Points. You are no longer required to present your Gold Card at the campsite to collect Loyalty Points; they are, in effect, automatically credited with each night spent on a Camping Cheque campsite. 3. Earning Bonus Points. Two rules apply here: 6 Camping Cheques used on the same campsite earns 7 Loyalty Points; 11 cheques earns 14 points (6=7, 11=14).
3. Payment. When it is time to pay for your stay, my Gold Card is inserted in the payment terminal, which will in turn debit the number of Camping Cheques due. I will receive a transaction receipt on which my Camping Cheque balance is indicated. My Loyalty Points are credited on to the Gold Card.
