Evolution, not revolution
Generally, when things are going well, we're not too keen on changing them. As a child when we were at that age when girls are annoying because all they do is stop you enjoying your game of marbles or football, the young Marine Julliard was put next to me in the classroom. At first I missed my previous classmate with whom we discussed crucial and fascinating issues such as the relative strengths of Batman and Superman and swapping Panini cards to complete by World Cup 82 album (for that matter, if anyone has a Didier Six and a Socrates, I could finish it off) but as the weeks passed by, I learnt to appreciate this lovely girl with brown The shrewder among you hair, a cajoling smile and ringing may have noticed. After 10 laugh more and more. For the first time in my life, I found out that a girl years of good and loyal could be more that just someone services, we have decided whose hair you pulled in the playto give the Camping ground. After several months sitting at the same desk I saw Marine in a Cheque logo a make-over. new light and then destiny came along and played a trick on me by sending the father of my adorable neighbour to the other side of the country without giving me a chance to tell her that I liked her. I was told how you lose one, ten others will come running back, which turned out to be sadly untrue with experience. A tall blonde girl, whose name I cannot recall, came to sit in Marine's place and, although it wasn't her fault, I never got on with her. The shrewder among you may have noticed. After 10 years of good and loyal services, we have decided to give the Camping Cheque logo a make-over. But we don't want to replace a little girl with brown hair by a tall blonde that you might hate, so in order not change everything we took the decision to modernise it while sticking to the overall look and feel of this logo with which we have become familiar. And in order to prove that everything is moving forwards without any dramatic changes, you will find all your favourite destinations in your 2010 guide with a few novelties such as Turkey, the latest arrival to the network, which you can preview in the pages of this magazine.

If you have a few queries, other Camping Cheque users may be able to assist you: there is a scoring system allowing you to consult comments made by campers, camping-car and caravan owners for each campsite. An easier-to-use forum is also available to chat about the network. Encourage other users to benefit from your experience. Kawan Village Lac de la Liez - Champagne (F) Lac de Panthier Bourgogne (F)
Chef competition The professional SITEO exhibition in Lyon is attended by many campsite owners. At last October’s event, a cooking competition was organised for chefs at campsite restaurants.
Kawan Village le Mas de Reilhe - Languedoc Roussillon (F)
New toilet blocks at the Mas de Reilhe The Kawan Village le Mas de Reilhe (p. 147 of the 2010 guide) gets a new toilet block in 2010. This toilet block will be heated and have a PA system installed. Of course, it will have all the amenities you will need for a successful stay: access for people with reduced mobility, baby changing area, washing machine and tumble dryer, etc. This toilet block is just part of the regular and ongoing efforts by the management to improve the campsite and for which it has been given, this year, a recommendation by the ANWB, the highly regarded Dutch automobile club.
Camping Cheque members are privileged on this occasion because first place was awarded to David Plet from the Lac de Panthier (p. 194 in the 2010 guide) in Burgundy. This is not surprising if you consider his successful career in several top class restaurants before he took over at this campsite, located 40 km from Dijon. Be sure to stop by to taste his delicious cuisine whilst appreciating the view across the lake from the restaurant terrace. Second place on the podium also went to a Camping Cheque location, to the chef at Kawan Village Lac de la Liez (p. 179 in the 2010 guide), who was a runner up in the competition; irrefutable proof of the quality of this restaurant, situated en route to your holiday destination, where the A5 crosses the A31. For more information, do not hesitate to contact these two campsites directly: www.lac-de-panthier.com and www.campingliez.com.

the Club Eriba South West
A low season that is high in colour Camping Cheque has always come to the support of caravan clubs looking to organise rallies. With holidays in over 40 campsites in the network, the Club Eriba South West is one of those clubs with which Camping Cheque maintains special relations. A word from its president, Jean Antonini. "The Club Eriba South West has stayed as a group in over 40 "Camping Cheque" websites, mainly in France but also in Spain, the Netherlands, Italy and Portugal. Our members often decide to stop off in a campsite chosen from the guide book when travelling privately. Our stays have risen from just a few days to over a week and numbers of participants have increased from ten to over fifty at times. Unforgettable evenings and the great pleasures of getting together to share a nice meal and a drink, tasting the regional specialities.

In any case, our preference for holidays lasting a few days goes to campsites located within an area that has plenty of tourist sites to be visited. We sometimes organise our annual meeting there. We enjoy getting together for the evening entertainment in the rooms and facilities provided for us by those in charge of the campsite and our club. Thank you to our hosts for their friendly welcome. The club Eriba South West is at home at the Camping Cheque campsites. There will be other opportunities in the future for us to get together and appreciate them for their good-natured and caring companionship.

he Roussel family has historical links to the land where the Alpes Dauphiné campsite is situated dating back to the beginning of last century. Originally from the Hautes-Alpes, the grandfather of Roland Roussel, current site owner, set out for the United States where French sheep farming expertise was in great deman. He came back to the Old Continent during the First World War and eventually settled back in his homeland, where he bought a few acres of land on the sunny side of the Col Bayard and set up his farm. Several decades later, his son Lucien decided to turn this farm into a campsite. Although this choice left his neighbours somewhat confused, it has proven to be the right one; 35 years on, his son Roland is now the head of this family run campsite.

that the Norwegian wilderness has all the space it needs to express itself. There are very few towns and most are situated along the coast. It is worth taking the time to explore Oslo. Nestled at the bottom of the only large fjord on the south coast, the

Norway is home to beautiful cities such as Oslo, offering both the classic architecture of its parliament buildings (left) and little boutiques with traditional, coloured wooden facades (opposite), as well as Bergen and its delightful medieval town, and Bryggen on the coast. However this diverse country also possesses wild landscapes like the spectacular Geirangerfjord (opposite, right), and the Jotunheimen mountains (below, right), which are all well worth the trip.

Norwegian capital enjoys a beautiful natural setting surrounded by wooded hillsides. Ideal for those who like exploring on foot, this city is a seductive mix of old and new buildings. The whole city seems to be organised around the elegant central street, Karl Johans Gate. All the main tourist attractions can be reached from this long road, such as the Akershus castle and gateway. This medieval fortress, used as a prison by the Nazis, now houses the Resistance museum. Any visit to Oslo would not be complete without a trip to the Viking boat museum, which displays the contents of three Viking burial sites. In accordance with tradition, three boats were used for these funerals and they are presented here in perfect condition. A visit to this museum is a great opportunity to discover the culture of

the Vikings, beyond the cliché of bearded warriors terrorising medieval Europe. Bergen, former capital of Norway, with its medieval old town and pretty wooden houses is certainly less famous than Oslo, but is equally worth the trip. The main tourist attractions in Norway are the fjords. These immense valleys carved by the sea along the coast make up some of the most spectacular scenery in Europe. Especially in the west of the country, some are particularly impressive such as Sognefjord (the longest and deepest at 200km long and 1300 metres deep) and Geirangerfjord, recently named a UNESCO world heritage site. After reading the guide books and seeing the documentaries, tourists naturally expect to be left open mou-
thed in front of these natural wonders, but nothing fully prepares you for the shock when you finally come face to face with these gigantic, mystical places. However, there is a lot more to the Norwegian wilderness than the fjords. In the centre of the country, the Jotunheimen national park is a highly sought after destination for lovers of wide open spaces. Steep valleys, ravines, lakes, waterfalls and 60 glaciers on some of the highest mountains in Norway are crisscrossed by hundreds of hiking paths so you can discover all the secrets of this magnificent place. Although nature is omnipresent and you can drive for several dozen kilometres without coming across a living soul, do not forget that man has also made his mark on the country. Other than Oslo and

Interview with Even Aarethun, owner of the Lærdal Ferie- og Fritidspark campsite What do people like most about your region? E. Aarethun : The spectacular natural scenery with fjords, glaciers and mountains. The Norwegian fjords are a UNESCO world heritage site. People also like spending activity holidays here in this exceptional setting where they can go hiking, cycling, fishing, canoeing etc. What do your guests enjoy most about Lærdal? E. Aarethun: They love the tranquil natural environment: the campsite looks directly over the fjord. They also benefit from the campsite’s central location, ideal for visits and activities in the Fjords region. Cycle paths and walking trails are accessible directly from the campsite.

Bergen, the Norwegian coast shelters many little towns full of charm, such as the delightful city of Risør on the south coast, where the U shaped port is bordered by white houses from the 17th-19th century. From here you can catch a water taxi to take you to the skerries. Inland, the regions are still steeped in tradition. If you want to immerse yourself in Norwegian culture, there is nowhere better than the region of Gol. Dotted with beautiful, traditional farms and emblematic, upright wooden churches, it offers an exciting insight into rural life in Norway. Norway is like a buffet where every dish is too tempting. You want to visit it all and it is hard to choose. Unless you stay for several months, a visit to Norway is always mildly frustrating because you will want to spend weeks in each region. It is therefore
a brilliant coincidence that the days are so long in the spring time, so tourists have the time to make the absolute most of their trip. n

Casablanca, but it still maintains a certain rural charm. The city alone is worth spending a few days in so you can appreciate all its treasures; the Medina quarter with its pink walls and famous Koutoubia minaret, a real work of Hispano-Arabic art, its lush gardens and especially the souks which are one of the city’s biggest attractions. Make sure you take the opportunity to wander through the narrow lanes and meet some of the city’s inhabitants. Around Marrakech, you can enjoy getting lost in the sprawling palm groves at the edge of the city or you can take a day trip to explore the hilly landscape of the Oukaïmeden, or even go as far as the Ouzoud falls, a splendid waterfall over 100 metres high. Leaving Marrakech and the Upper-Atlas
we take the Atlantic road and after a day’s travel we stop not far from Agadir. We take the road past Essaouira, which is better for large vehicles, leaving the hilly route of Tizi-n-Test that links Marrakech and Taroudant for a different excursion. Its landscapes with diverse vegetation and crystal clear waters are worth taking time over. You would therefore be wise to rent a smaller vehicle for these mountain roads. After arriving at the Atlantic coast we enjoy the superb beaches which trim the ocean. With 300 days of sunshine a year, you can have lazy days by the sea in any season. Not far from our next port of call, Agadir nestles in a cove sheltered from the Atlantic weather, between the western Atlas Mountains that plunge into the ocean and the Anti-Atlas, the last mountain range before the desert.
The beauty of this region is painted with contrasts between vast stretches of arid, rocky land and gorges and valleys abundant with vegetation. The dry Souss plain, which extends to the foot of the mountains between Essaouira and Goulimine, is not unlike the desert that begins just outside Tiznit, and yet only a few kilometres from Agadir is the “paradise valley”, a haven of lush vegetation worthy of its name, which leads to the village of Imouzzer des Ida Outanane, famous for its waterfalls, which tumble down into a natural pool. Leaving the coast, we take the road to M'hamid south of Zagora. The road is long so we need to plan a stop before our most southerly destination on our Moroccan adventure. At certain points, the road is narrow and windy but always
At 100m high, the impressive Ouzoud falls, hidden amongst lush vegetation a few dozen kilometres from Marrakesh, contrast with the red clay of the ramparts that border Moroccan towns, which can be seen dotted across the fascinating dessert-mountain landscape that lines our campervan route. On seeing Essaouira and its port full of pretty blue boats, it is hard to believe that the dessert begins only a few kilometres away.

good quality. Very large trailers must be driven with caution when they pass other vehicles. The last leg out our journey leads us across the Draa valley. This river, which used to be the longest in Morocco before a section disappeared into the sand, forms a long oasis that runs almost uninterrupted through the dessert for over 200 kilometres. The section between Zagora and M’hamid is certainly the most spectacular. We decide to come back later to visit the village of Tamegroute which is riddled with underground pathways, and to see Ouled Driss where the oldest Kasbah has been transformed into a museum on life in the Draa valley. When we arrive in M'hamid, we find ourselves on the outskirts of the desert in a charming artisan village. Particularly when the souk is on, the town comes alive with

the sounds and smells of one of the most colourful markets in Morocco. Make sure you spend a night in the dessert: the experience is unforgettable. Going back along the Draa valley in the opposite direction, we ascend northwards and head inland to our next destination: Erfoud. The endless arid mountain landscape is beautiful but sometimes monotonous, except in this last section where vegetation has taken hold. Too far to travel in a single day, you will need to stop half way. Erfoud is a small trading post that sits between the vast Tafilalet palm groves on one side and the first sand dunes of the Sahara on the other. These dunes, the sand dunes of the Erg Chebbi, are the only dunes in the Moroccan Sahara. They extend for 40 kilometres and some
reach a height of 170 metres. The most beautiful time to admire these sand dunes is at sunrise or sunset when they are bathed in soft, low light. They are highlighted by the sun in a delicate spectrum of colours. It is hard not to be overcome by a sense of wonder as you contemplate this rolling sea of sand which seems to go on forever. On the return journey, we take the opportunity to visit the harsh, rocky landscape of the narrow Ziz gorges, before heading back to Azrou and then taking the motorway to Tangiers. Depending on the season, it may be worth checking the accessibility to the Azrou pass, which can be blocked by snow. Although it is particularly beautiful, the road between Erfoud and Marrakech should be avoided if you have a large caravan or campervan. This windy route rises to 2000 metres above

Looking back from the ferry on the return crossing to Europe, we watch the faint lights of Tangiers fade into the distance as the shapes of the cliffs at Rif disappear into nothingness, our eyes full of stars from the Saharan sky. Our spirits still soaring with the mysteries of the Orient, we dream of our next journey to this country of bright colours and heady perfume. n

I have never been camping outside of Europe. What sort of campsites should I expect to find?
What are the driving conditions like? Major roads are good, particularly motorways, but secondary roads can be narrow and windy. In a car, this does not normally cause any problems but with a large campervan or trailer, it can be difficult. Under these conditions, it is better to stick to major roads and to only
travel on smaller roads without the caravan in tow, or in a rental car. You are also strongly recommended not to travel at night. There is little or no lighting (except on motorways) and Moroccans only turn on their headlights when they pass another vehicle, which can be startling. In winter, it is therefore wise to find a place to stay before nightfall. You also need to be careful on the valley roads (Drâa valley) near the desert. Since the sand is constantly moving, small dunes can form on the roads at any point, without any warning signs or indications.
to driver a little slower. The Moroccan police can be somewhat over-zealous with foreign vehicles. It is therefore better not to give them any reason to act. Speeding results in a fine of 400 Dhr which is around 40€. How safe is Morocco? The Moroccans are very friendly and there are usually no problems with security as long as visitors respect local customs and are careful, just like in any other foreign tourist destination. However, avoid the Rif area which is less stable due to high levels of drug trafficking.
There are also “wadis” which regularly flood the roads in the rainy season. You must also strictly obey the speed limits. They are often not well signed and it is always better

Istanbul is a city with a rich and surprising heritage. It would be impossible to see it all properly in a day, so this article will content itself with a stroll through its most famous quarter, Sultanahmet. This area alone is worth several days in Istanbul. Situated to the south of the eastern city and a UNESCO world heritage site, this is the old Istanbul. At its heart, it houses some of Istanbul’s greatest works of architectural art, like the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and Hagia Sophia (Aya Sofya), where we will begin our visit. It is worth saying that this was the largest Christian church in the world until 1453, before it was transformed into a mosque and then into a museum (1935). It is a place of incredible beauty. Emperor Justinian the Great who oversaw the construction exclai-
med as he entered, “Glory to God who has judged me worthy of such a work”. We understand what he meant. It is difficult not to spend a few minutes in contemplative silence looking up at the lavish dome. The mosaics which decorate the building are particularly beautiful and you will be surprised to discover the adjoining hammam. It was once a church but tradition dictated that a hamman should be built beside all mosques. The one in Hagia Sophia is probably the most beautiful of the 32 hammams built by Sinan, the architect of Suleiman the Magnificent and great architect of Istanbul.

Erected on the order of Mehmet II, this majestic palace was the Sultans’ residence until 19th century. It would take more than a week to discover all of its many secrets, so allow at least half a day for a mouth-watering taster. Depending on how much time you have, you can visit the whole palace or focus on the unmissable harem and treasury. Although today, many people imagine the harem to be a place of
With eyes still full of colours and lights after visiting two of the most beautiful religious constructions in Europe, we take a detour past the Basilica Cistern on our way to the Topkapi Palace. This cistern is testimony to the Byzantine Emperors’ taste for grand constructions: 65 metres wide and 143 metres long, with 36 columns and around 80,000m3 of water. Built under Emperor Justinian the Great in the 6th century, this cistern was forgotten and not rediscovered until 16th century, before eventually being restored. Today, it is a strange place, very popular with tourists thanks to its cool interior during the summertime. Not far away is the Topkapi Palace.
debauchery where the Sultan satisfied his desires, it was nothing like that at all. The harem was a group of apartments for the imperial family. The Sultan could only have 4 official wives, but he could have as many concubines as he wished. The children he had with these women had as much right to the throne as those he had with his official wives. Given that power was not always conferred to the eldest child, the harem was often a place of plots and treachery for the wives and concubines who wanted their sons to become Sultan. The treasury houses objects of great value including the Topkapi dagger, which Peter Ustinov tried to steal in the film Topkapi by

A stone’s throw from Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque awaits us. Built during the reign of Sultan Ahmet I at the beginning of the 17th century, this mosque openly sought to compete with Hagia Sophia. Judges would have a hard task deciding between them as both monuments rival each other in beauty. From the outside, the mosque is absolutely astounding and the inside shows off its height: the 260 stained glass windows create an unparalleled atmosphere. The main problem with the mosque is its popularity. Still used as a place of worship, there are often too many tourists and they can only enter from the south entrance, as the main door is reserved for worshippers.

A little history to better understand Istanbul
What not to miss outside Sultanahmet
From 7th century BC to 324, Byzantium: Byzantium was established by a Greek colonist by the name of Byzas on the European bank of the Bosphorus. For several centuries this community was allied with Rome in times of war.
The Kariye museum (7): this museum, which was once Chora church, houses the most beautiful mosaics of the Byzantine world.
From 324 to 1453, The Byzantine Empire: The Roman Emperor Constantine followed his rival Licinius to the banks of the Bosphorus. He then decided to make Byzantium the “new Rome” and the eastern capital of his Empire. The city was therefore renamed Constantinople in his honour. As eastern capital of the Roman Empire, it became the capital of the Byzantine Empire after the fall of Rome. This glorious period gave the city some of its most beautiful monuments including Hagia Sophia. From 1453 to 1923, the Ottoman era: When Constantinople was seized by Sultan Mehmet II in 1453, it became part of the Ottoman Empire and was then its capital for five centuries. Considering himself to be an heir of the Roman Emperors, the Sultan undertook to rebuild and repopulate the city. It was only under the rein of his descendant, Suleiman the Magnificent, that the city was covered in mosques and other Ottoman monuments. At this time, Istanbul was a cosmopolitan city and probably one of the most civilised in the world. From 1923 to the present: Now on the losing side, in 1918 the Ottoman Empire was destroyed and Turkey was occupied by the Greeks. There was an uprising led by Mustafa Kemal, who established the Turkish Republic. Istanbul lost its capital status to Ankara, but it has never ceased to be the most important city in the country. 2010: Istanbul has been chosen as the cultural capital of Europe and is undergoing major construction works.
The Bosphorus River: ferries and cruise liners allow visitors to discover the city from the waters of the Bosphorus. At night, the view will take your breath away. The spice market (8): this traditional market sells a great number of culinary specialities (spices, Turkish delight, dried fruit, olive oil soap, etc.). Istiklal Caddesi (9): the modern side to the city with boutiques and restaurants. Nevizade Sokak (10): this picturesque street is lined with restaurants and bars where you can enjoy the Istanbul nightlife.

A DUTCH FAMILY SHARE THEIR LOVE OF HUNGARY AT THE AMEDI CAMPSITE

n arrival at the Amedi campsite, guests are surprised to be greeted by a Dutch family. However, the Wesselink family left the Netherlands to settle in Hungary in the little village of Borsodbóta, right next to the Bükk nature reserve, where they set up their campsite. It is worth saying that Gert Wesselink’s mother-in-law is Hungarian and the family used to regularly go to Hungary for the summer holidays. After several years getting to know all about the country in a campervan, Gert and his wife Annie decided to set up a campsite in this country they both love so much. After finding the ideal spot in a charming natural environment, they opened the doors to their new establishment in May 2005, helped by their daughter Joke and her husband. After significant building works including new wash blocks and a swimming pool, Amedi is now a small family campsite with 40 plots shaded by fruit trees. More than anything else, this campsite’s biggest charm is its natural setting. The Wesselink family have created a beautiful garden and the eggs from their chickens and their fruit and vegetables are on-sale in the campsite grocery store. Just like the red wine which they grow near the campsite, which you can try at tasting sessions run by Joke once a week. Both set on sharing their love of Hungary, Joke and her father organise a dinner once a week where guests can sample real Hungarian goulash. They are always very happy to share their favourite things about this region and its wild landscapes and rich variety of flora and fauna. So feel free to ask them for advice on places to visit. In the near future, they are also planning to set up a mini-bus tour service from the campsite. n

country of sailors and fishermen, Portugal is always oriented towards the sea. It is therefore no surprise that fish and sea food are some of the best dishes. Naturally, cod has a central place in Portuguese cuisine. It is said that there are 365 different ways to cook it, but since you probably won’t have time to try them all, make sure you sample the cod fritters known as Bolinhos de Bacalhau or Pastéis de Bacalhau, which are often eaten as a snack between meals. Although cod is extremely widely available, do not forget the diverse sea food and other fish, served grilled in little fishing ports or right on the beach. You will certainly have an opportunity to taste Arroz de Mariscos (seafood risotto) and a cataplana. This copper utensil is used to steam food with vegetables and spices. This cooking technique is great for seafood, fish or meat. Even though Portuguese cooking is strongly linked to the sea, meat is also widely eaten. Among the most typical recipes are Cozido à Portuguesa, a type of Portuguese stew made from braised chicken in consommé or simmered with ham, tomatoes, garlic and port; and the Caldo Verde, a soup made from potato and sausage. Many Portuguese recipes also use very high quality olive oil, which has been produced right across the country for centuries. As a result, the landscape is decked with olive trees, as with vines in the north. Portugal produces succulent wines including its most famous; port. The Alto Douro valley where port and Douro wines are produced is now a UNESCO world heritage site. It is the oldest wine growing region in the world. The espalier vine-covered hillsides and meandering river carving its way among them makes a very beautiful picture. Towards the south, the vines spread out between the river Dão and river Mondego. Vineyard roads waiting to be explored lead up into the hilly, inland landscape and down

towards the coast, past beautiful lagoons. These roads pass through many small villages with a rich heritage. This is where they make Dão (a full bodied red wine) and Bairrada wines with a strong tannin flavour. Around Lisbon and along the Tagus, the Bucelas, Ribatejo and Oeste wines await you. Tourist routes will take you

to visit the vineyards, past many hidden gems like the little medieval village of Obidos or the green Serra de Sintra. Even farther south are the vines used to make Alentejo wine, which tastes of the hot sun and scorched earth. Each of these wines go perfectly with different Portuguese dishes, so do not be afraid to ask advice to choose the perfect combination. n
Pastéis de Nata These little flans date back to the 19th century and are a speciality of Portuguese cuisine. Only the manufacturer in Belem, near Lisbonne, in the part of the city with the Belem tower and Hieronymite monastery, still makes them according to the original recipe and is allowed to call them Pastéis de Belém. The master bakers must vow not to divulge the recipe. Come and try them in the famous Fabrica where you can also appreciate the very beautiful azulejo pannels. These pastéis are very popular and around 10,000 are sold every day.

New Year’s Eve celebrations There are many reasons to visit Germany and the regions along its borders during winter, but New Year is the time when the season really shows its true colours in these parts. Traditional Christmas markets add a charming touch and, in some places, visitors can even enjoy cross-country skiing. During these periods, several of our campsites organise Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations, so do not hesitate to check their websites or contact them for more information.
A skier’s paradise During the winter months, a number of Alpine campsites on the Camping Cheque network (France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland) welcome you for caravan holidays at the foot of the ski slopes. Many of these offer top quality facilities (private heated bathroom, heated indoor pool, sauna, shuttle to ski slopes, ski equipment storage room, etc.) so you can enjoy the pleasure of skiing without ever feeling the harshness of winter.

North Cape During the winter months, the countries in the North of Europe take on a truly special atmosphere. The nights are longer than in other countries but this actually adds to their charm. In fact, in the most northern areas, this is time when you are most likely to witness phenomena like the aurora borealis. Depending on the region, you can also enjoy Nordic and cross-country skiing, or explore cities like Copenhagen, Oslo and Arhus, all draped in their glittering winter finery.

At the borders of Europe Although inland Bulgaria and Romania suffer from harsh winters, the Black Sea coast enjoys a much more pleasant climate and can be visited during any season. However, it is worth planning your itinerary because only a few campsites en route to the coast are open here during this period. In Greece, the inland mountain regions have short cold winters while the weather on the coast remains very pleasant even during the worst months. A winter holiday in Greece or Turkey is also the perfect way to avoid the tourist crowds of spring and summer.

Museums and shopping The Netherlands, Belgium and the United Kingdom are ideal winter destinations. Although the countryside will not be at its best during these colder months, this is a great opportunity to discover the countless cultural riches that these different countries have to offer; Amsterdam, The Hague, Brussels, Bruges and London are packed full of museums and other tourist attractions which can be visited in all seasons. Visitors can also enjoy seasonal events such as carnivals which have an important role in this part of Europe (particularly those in Binche, Belgium and Dunkirk, France) as well as the winter sales in London’s shopping streets.
