Campus Hangouts

The Elegant

PATRIOT

This month, we have a chat with Brian Jura, The founder of Home254, an apparel line which focuses on the niche of patritism without the flag cliche of other brands in the same line. His designs have been worn by highly famous and well travelled celebrities such as Fena Gitu, Avril, Eric Omondi, Butita & Otos just to name a few. With orders coming from as far as the States, we had a sit down with him to learn the secrets of his success.

1. When did you decide to choose fashion designing as a career ? I decided to do this when i realized its what I love, its what I would wake up every morning happy to do. I love creating and this allows me to create.

4. What skills according to you are necessary to be a successful fashion entrepreneur? Just be a thinker and creative. 5. What role do you think social media plays in fashion today? social media plays a very big role both positive and negative. Pro is its easier for people to know exactly what they want and easier to set up an e commerce. the cons is that people can easily duplicate your work so many counterfeit products out here.

2. The designs that you created are no doubt great, but who and which things were your inspiration while creating such designs? I love this country, I love fashion and art...I had to bring this three together and not be cliche. That is what inspired me, people to look patriotic in an elegant way 6. Where do you see Home254 in the next five years ? 3. How much did you start with Where i want to see it is, trading and how did you use this to grow in the stock market. the business? I started off with Ksh. 2,300 which 7. How would you describe your was my rent while in campus plus personal style? 2,300 loan from M-shwari. I used I would call it Elegantly Patriotic. this to buy apparels at that time Simple is the new cool and print them for selling (nowadays we make our own) 8. Tell us something about your background.

I graduated in 201 6 with a BS in Electronics and Computer Engineering from JKUAT but man I love looking good and creating so had to put the Engineering aside but surely I will be back. 9. How did you handle disappointment when you wee starting out? I always handle this as a challenge, we are told to do one crazy thing everyday...if you do this you will never let disappointment put you down. I believe i was meant to be a champion. 1 0. Parting shot. There are those people will see what they want but there are those that will see what is stopping them from getting what they want. Be the Millennial that sees what they want and go for IT.

AFRICA NAZA

-The Vibe Tight Knit Family

Africa Nazarene University is a private, Christian founded institution and an affiliate of The Church of the Nazarene Colleges and Universities around the world. The main campus - Leah T. Marangu - is located at Ongata Rongai and is approximately 22 kilometers south of Nairobi City Center.

-What it feels like to go here

Describing ANU as a second home for students feels like a bit of an understatement for all who have passed through here and made lasting memories in the adjacent town of Ongata Rongai. The inviting faculty and atmosphere that comes with a small campus makes it nearly impossible to leave after four years without professorial connections or a group of friends that redefines the meaning of “squad goals.” The dedicated team of professors invest countless hours in their students’ success in and outside of the classroom.

-Where we hang

There are a couple of spaces to hange around within the school and some of these include; The TV room, also known to some as Gandiza, The cafeteria which has great banana cakes by the way. The chapel, where there are two services a week offering divine inspiration with amazing speakers and the various sport fields for ardent game lovers.

-Awesome Alumni

Like any great university, ANU has some great alumni who include Beatrice Elachi, who until recently was the Majority chief whip in the Senate of Kenya. Other great Alumni include Elijah Miano, Corporate Communications Officer-Kenya Airports Authority(KAA), Jacquiline Magloire- Owner The Manor 540,

Feel Like Giving Up

ome days are light and filled with inspiration. Some days are simply routine and on some days you may feel like just giving up on… Your Degree or diploma that you are pursuing Your new habit of working out or eating healthier. Your own small business or blog because you haven’t had the results you wanted. Truly feeling better about yourself. Dating because you can’t seem to find the right person or even have a good date at all.

Winding up in such situations is a normal part of making positive changes in life. But what you do when you feel like giving up will determine a lot about where your life will go. In this article we’d like to share 6 habits that will help you to hold on or to change direction on those difficult days.

1 . Tap into realistic expectations.

If you feel like giving up or you are bored a lot, if you feel no real passion or excitement or curiosity about a change or your current path then ask yourself these two questions: Am doing this because I truly want it? Or am I doing it because someone told me to or because so many people around me seem to have done it or are working on it? What you want isn’t easy to know before you get started though. You may need to try different paths before you find one that fits you. And just because everyone around you seem to love running doesn’t mean that you have to love it or that you have to give up on the habit of regular exercise. Try walking, biking, playing football or basketball instead. Try a new way of doing what you want and see if it is a better fit and more enjoyable for you.

or many final years in campus, the time leading up to graduation and the start of a first job is often chaotic and stressful. You are trying to complete your campus career without too much of a meltdown while dealing with the demands of job-hunting, interviewing, and facing the reality of the end of schooling (at least for the foreseeable future). few campus students jump straight from campus to their dream jobs. Sure ... every school has that coder who got an offer from a high end software company in his second year or that KASNEB savvy student who gets a six figure job with a bank. But for the rest of us, the transition from campus to career is a marathon, not a 1 00m dash. his transition is a difficult time for many people as it's a struggle that most young adults are left to figure out on their own. Do not despair as there are ways to thrive and grow during this transition period - even if you are entering the job market under less than suitable situations.

n all our discussions with campus seniors and recent graduates, ten issues arise time and time again as the keys to making a successful transition from life as a student to life as a productive employee. Understanding these issues and being prepared for them before they occur should help you make a smoother transition.

1.Acknowledge that you’re in a transition The key ingredient to fixing anything is to usually acknowledge the present state in order to face it better. Be truthful to yourself and others about your situation and its challenges. People are going to ask you what you’re doing now that campus is over. Embracing uncertainty during your postcampus transition reduces stress of unrealized (often unrealistic) expectations. It creates a nonjudgmental mental space for you to explore your options.

time work. You probably have friends who are in the same situation you are in and these people are a valuable network for support, information sharing, and professional growth. Get together regularly to talk about your career ambitions and the steps you are taking to get there. Focus on small, immediate goals that support your job hunt: conducting informational interviews, editing your resume, writing blog posts, etcetera. Hold each other accountable for completing these tasks and staying on-track with your job hunt.

2. Create an accountability group 3. Keep a journal Most young people experience a Sometimes you don’t have clear lull between campus and fullprofessional ambitions and need

time to figure out what you want to do. Keeping a journal can help organize your thoughts and guide you in the right direction. Find time at least once a week to write down your thoughts and dreams. Be honest with yourself. Over time, you’ll find recurring themes and interests that may influence your thinking about a career. The time after campus also gives you an opportunity to strengthen your marketability. Learning never really ends with school, so take this time to address any weaknesses in your professional portfolio. This leads us to the next three tips:

Advice that you are relevant to the needs of the marketplace. 7. Find Gaps and Exploit Them Certain companies could use someone better versed with certain skills you currently posses. The advent of the internet has brought about new non traditional careers 4. Master the “hard skills” such as Digital Marketers. Entitlement Having that degree does not entitle you to a job, and it’s best to prepare yourself now that most employers will not be impressed with your grades or your education as you are with them. Attending a “name” school or having an extremely high grade-point average are definitely selling points in your favor, but not something you solely rely to get a job. Focus less on why employers should be so impressed with your credentials that they should be hunting you down — and more on how you can use your talent and initiative to make a contribution to the employer’s bottom line. Be sure to tell the employer how you will make a strong contribution. Final Thoughts Strive to get the best job offers from the best employers, but remember to temper everything you do with a realistic vision of what to really expect — in the job-hunt and in getting job offers. Take to heart the advice from all the recent graduands that have come before you and been in your shoes — and you’ll be better prepared and more satisfied with your job-hunt.

BORN A CRIME :

Stories From A South African Childhood TREVOR NOAH

STAY WITH ME AYOBAMI ADEBAYO Yejide and Akin have been married since they met and fell in love at university. Though many expected Akin to take several wives, he and Yejide have always agreed: polygamy is not for them. But four years into their marriage–after consulting fertility doctors and healers, trying strange teas and unlikely cures–Yejide is still not pregnant. She assumes she still has time–until her family arrives on her doorstep with a young woman they introduce as Akin’s second wife. Furious, shocked, and livid with jealousy, Yejide knows the only way to save her marriage is to get pregnant, which, finally, she does, but at a cost far greater than she could have dared to imagine. An electrifying novel of enormous emotional power, Stay With Me asks how much we can sacrifice for the sake of family.

Trevor Noah’s unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away. Finally liberated by the end of South Africa’s tyrannical white rule. Born a Crime is the story of a mischievous young boy who grows into a restless young man as he struggles to find himself in a world where he was never supposed to exist. It is also the story of that young man’s relationship with his fearless, rebellious, and fervently religious mother—his teammate, a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence, and abuse that would ultimately threaten her own life..

Beauty USE CLEANSING OILS

The great oils have slickly taken over our world. Mixed with water, cleansing body oils turn into milky emulsions to lift of dirt from your skin while leaving it supple and protecting its moisture barrier. That does sound better than using a regular shower gel, doesn't it?

SOAP RIGHT

Take time to understand what things affect your skin and chose your soap with care. Avoid strong soaps. Strong soaps and detergents can strip oil from your skin. Instead, choose mild cleansers to wach your hands and self.

REMOVE MAKE UP WITH ESSENTIALS OILS

The best make up removers are a blend of essential oils that melt into your skin and remove every last speck of makeup without leaveing your face tight and dehydrated.

SLEEP ON IT

Let’s face the fact that just a night's sleep isn’t enough to fade a circles, lines and dullness that brave the skin stressors the day throws at us. Gelcream will work the graveyard shift with your skin’s natural overnight recovery process to bring life back into it. Charcoal masks will also draw out bacteria and fight acne. Apply mostly on acne-infected areas.

Beauty UP YOUR HYDRATION LEVELS

You’re leaving your skin thirsty more often than you know. In order to keep the skin well moisturized, it is important to choose daily moisturizing skin care products that balance the level of water within the skin well. It is also important to note what skin type you have whether its dry or oily and what special care needs be taken. Call them needy but, with dry skins, if you don't give them moisture they will flake.

DON'T NEGELECT THE LIPS

LOVE YOUR HANDS

You use them all the time, wash them the most, and yet, when was the last time you used a targeted cream just for your hands? Companies have dedicated hand lotions to help them feel soft and smooth as silk and well moistured, Try out one.

DON'T SMOKE

Smoking narrows the tiny blood vessels in the outermost layers of skin, which decreases blood flow and makes skin paler. This also depletes the skin of oxygen and nutrients that are important to skin health.

As soon as you feel the need, use a restorative cream for the lips. Do not hesitate to reapply to this particularly fragile area as often as necessary.
