editorial “Comrades, there is no true social revolution without the liberation of women.” – Thomas Sankara Aggry Dion AKA Rue Baby caps an issue wholly dedicated to putting the Women on the foreline. Women are the pillars and glue that hold our society together and without them there wouldnt be a society to speak of. They are our mothers, sisters, daughters, girl friends and wives and in as much as men say they can't understand them, they dont really need to. because they understand them and in that understanding love them too. As is usual in every issue, the crucial issues are front and centre. We discuss feminism, what it means and ask questions on why so many men and women hate it so much. We also show you how to dress for power and level up your confidence. We then delve into health and why you should always put fitness on top of your agenda. The benefits and the various ways of getting fit. What does success mean to you? How do you achieve your version of this? We provide you a checklist of how to achieve success in campus and still get to have the time of your life. This March Issue of CampusMag is optimistic, fun, colourful and slightly eccentric. We live in serious times, but I hope that there is still room for a little fun. Dressing For The
POWER In You
MAKE YOUR OWN RULES Always opt for flat shoes in order to feel comfortable and selfassured. Nothing can knock your confidence like tired, achy feet. Whether for a first date or business meeting, You'll be much more confident with your feet firmly on the ground. Wear flats with a pair of high-waisted trousers to elongate your legs. They look so classic teamed with a crisp white shirt or a navy turtleneck. Overall it's quite a paired back look, but one that usually puts more focus on your personality.
DISCOVER YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE Allocating time to discover what suits you is so important when it comes to feeling confident through fashion. Put in the effort to find what works for you and which pieces make you feel great without the worry of rushing to get ready in the morning then regretting your choice later. Once you've found your mojo, you can keep on repeating outfits that make you feel good.
8 CampusMag
There's no denying power dressing has evolved since the days of relying on shoulder-pads and pinstripes for a little chutzpah. We no longer need a flashy outfit to communicate confidence, but anyone with a love for fashion will tell you it can help boost the spirit, talent and skills within. Our in-house fashionista Maggie Ninno talks about fittings that are designed to make you feel even stronger. Of course there is no one-size-fits-all formula when it comes to finding your power ourfit and so she gave us a list of ideas, tricks and methods as way of inspiration.
LET YOUR PERSONALITY SHINE THROUGH Empowerment is all about confidence and fashion is an amazing tool to reflect that. It's about having a highly personal aesthetic—that could be about prints, colour, proportion or having the confidence to pair unusual pieces together.
STEP OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE It can be empowering to try something new and make it your own.
Fashion Speak FIND YOUR OUTFIT ENHANCERS Sartorial confidence comes from key accessories: a wide belt, a pair of cocktail earrings, some statement shoes and a scraped back smooth hairstyle. For someone else, that might be a crisp mans shirt worn with skinny trousers to give a strong silhouette; or a high necked, long sleeved long dress that reveals nothing but fits like a glove and is somehow the sexiest thing of all.
FIND YOUR IDEAL LENGTH You'll feel most confident when in an outfit that you truly love and feel comfortable in. The last thing you want to worry about is having to adjust your dress before sitting down or accidentally flashing your bum on the way out. It's hard to make knees look elegant. MAKE FASHION YOUR EXPRESSION Think about how powerful using that theory is.Enabling you to speak to everyone through your clothing without uttering a single word. One day you may feel quiet, but confidently calm. The next you might be feeling feisty, so you'll reach for a badass accessory or statement shoe to make sure you're heard when you walk. When you dress in a way that reflects your emotions, you'll feel in control of your day.
BE BOLD WITH COLORS If you need a wardrobe boost, turn to all things colourful. Rich, vibrant colours lift my moods. When Iyou need to make an entrance, put on a bright statement accessory. Whether it's oversized earrings or a bold bag. Accessories can take your outfit from average to fabulous.

WHY DO SO MANY MEN AND WOMEN HATE IT?
WHAT IS
FEMINISM ?
12 CampusMag
I
n honor of International Women’s Day this month, We’d like to share on what feminism signifies at its core, and why so many men and women in our world still hate and resist it fiercely. A version of this article originaly appeared on Forbes written by Kathy Caprino. In exploring the latest data from around the world on gender equality, and if we read any news at all or engage in social media activity, the following is abundantly clear – there is tremendous dissent and vehement disagreement today among people around the world about the status and importance of equality. I’ve seen this: • There are millions of people who both inwardly and outwardly do not support the idea that there should be equal rights and equal opportunities for men and women • There are thousands of people who feel we’ve already arrived at equality for men and women. • There are also thousands of people who believe we’re not at all there yet, and support continuing efforts to pave the way for equal rights for men and women. • There are thousands who believe in equal rights but find “feminism” a word and a movement that doesn’t align with their personal beliefs or values • It’s abundantly clear that our specific views on these issues are rooted deeply in our own personal and direct experiences, rather than on any data, research or science surrounding the issues. (In other words, if we’ve personally faced discrimination, we know beyond doubt that it exists. But if we haven’t faced it ourselves, we often doubt that it happens.) • Finally, both conscious and unconscious gender bias is rampant within us, but most us aren’t aware of it So, what would be helpful in this dialogue, or in this situation we find ourselves in today where there is a great divide among men and women, and among the people of our country who see things dramatically differently from each other? First, let’s understand what feminism is meant to be. If you look up the definition of “Feminism” in the dictionary, you’ll see these statements: Feminism is: 1. The advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes 2. The theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes 3. The belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities 4. The doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men Feminism at its core is about equality of men and women, not “sameness.” So many people offer up the argument that women are not the “same” as men so there can’t be equality. In other words, because their bodies are different, and because men and women have different physical capabilities, these physical differences mean equality is not possible. It’s critical to understand that “same” does not mean “equal.” The issue here is about equal rights and equal access to opportunities. Men and women don’t have to be the “same” in physicality to have the right to equality.

So how can we gain a deeper understanding of where we personally stand on the issue of equality? Asking yourself these questions and answering them candidly will get you closer to recognizing what you truly, honestly believe: 1. Do you believe that women and men deserve equal rights and equal opportunities? If not, why not, specifically? 2. Do you oppose the idea that every human being on the planet deserves equal rights and equal access to all opportunities? If you oppose it, what are you concerned will happen if equality is achieved? What are the downsides, in your way of thinking? 3. Do you believe that only certain groups of people should be allowed to have access to certain opportunities and rights? If so, which groups should be favored and granted this access, and who should decide that? 4. Do you believe that it would be inherently fair to grant women access to only partial rights while men have full array of other rights and opportunities? 5. Think back on what has shaped all your beliefs about these issues. Where did they come from specifically? Childhood, early adulthood? Your personal experiences with men and women, or what you read and watch in the media? Who in your “tribe,” family or peers influences your beliefs today? 6. What makes you mad and agitated to read in the media, about men, women and equality? 7. Do you believe that a world that prevents certain people from accessing full rights and opportunities would lead to a fair, healthy, prosperous world for all? 8. In the end, do your beliefs actually feel right for you? Do they feel aligned with who you really are -- healthy, whole, integrity-filled, compassionate, and fair? The vast majority of people I speak to do believe in equal rights for men and women, but the conflict is about how that equality should be achieved. Many resist calling themselves a “feminist” or supporting the feminist “movement.” Why do so many hate the term feminism and the feminist movement? There are five critical reasons behind this: 1. Feminism has been associated with strong, forceful and angry women, and our society continues to punish forceful women. 2. Many people fear that feminism will mean that men will eventually lose out – of power, influence, impact, authority, and control, and economic opportunities. 3. Many people believe that feminists want to control the world and put men down. 4. Many people fear that feminism will overturn time-honored traditions, religious beliefs and established gender roles, and that feels scary and wrong. 5. Many people fear that feminism will bring about negative shifts in relationships, marriage, society, culture, power and authority dynamics, and in business, job and economic opportunities if and when women are on an equal footing with men.
CampusMag 13

What about sexuality – what does that have to do with feminism? Women are fighting among themselves about what feminism is and how women should behave if they’re true feminists. Feminism at its core is about choice. Feminists can wear whatever they want. If we cannot choose freely how to behave, speak, act and present ourselves, then how then can we say we are free to choose. Remember #MyDressMyChoice. In the end, we all must honor the beliefs, values, and ideals that feel right and good to us. To help us do that, I’d ask you to think about these final questions: • Do your beliefs and behaviors support equality for all, or just for some? • Could your personal experiences be tainting how you’re looking at the whole world? • If you believe in equality for women, but not in feminism, can you articulate why? • If you believe in equality for all, are you able to take a brave stand for it, in a way that feels right to you, in your own life and in your own sphere of influence?

CRAYFISH CAMP Weekend trips don't always have to be only about staying in fancy hotels or travelling down to the coast for a to have some sand up you toes. Going inland to Naivasha can also be fun. As our inhouse trave sepcialist finds out.
Words : ANNE KIMANI
Crayfish Camp Naivasha is one of the best and most famous camping sites in Naivasha. Located on the shores of Lake Naivasha, Moi S Lake Rd which is about 2-3 hours from Nairobi and 1 8 km from Naivasha town, it is famous for both domestic and international tourists and offers a variety of activities which include mountain biking, boat riding, horse riding, swimming, nature walks, picnic activities and also indoor games. The accommodation at the camp ranges from self-contained cottages, modern tents of different sizes, vehicle and boat sleeping rooms to camping facilities using your own tents. For purposes of this article we will focus more on the camping bit which is cost saving for campus students. Crayfish camp can accommodate more than 400 campers in their campsite either in their own tents or in use of crayfish’s one or two person tents. The Crayfish camping site has facilities such as restaurant which also offers vegetarian meals and bar which are a stroll away from the tents and also not too far from the lake. Hot, cold showers and toilet facilities are also availed to the campers which are close at hand. The costs for hiring the couple tents is Ksh. 2300. This price is inclusive of camping fee per person per night for two, two mattresses, two blankets and two bed sheets. This is a fair price considering it comes with all the above. Consequently, one can decide to carry their own camping materials inclusive of the tents and with that they will only be required to pay for the camping fee per person which is Ksh. 700 per night which is handy especially if one is a frequent camper. Crayfish camp is also renowned for its amazing cuisine especially fresh crayfish from Lake Naivasha. From the well-stocked modern bars to the restaurant and open beer gardens, one can have a spectacular view if the Aberdares to the East and Eburu Hills to the North West. The fact that crayfish has a restaurant and
16 CampusMag
‘disco bar’ which is open during the weekends and has Crayfish’s popular Dj who will play popular tunes till you drop is quite amazing as one does not have to leave the place in search of a club to enjoy the night life. The Crayfish main bar is fully-stocked with beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks and is equipped with big screen DSTV, pool tables and dartboards. One amazing fact about crayfish is that once you’ve paid for the camping fee you can as well do as you wish. This includes cooking your own meals, buying your own drinks, listening to one’s own music etc. If you are looking into saving even more extra pennies it would be advisable to carry your own cooking materials such as gas, cooking pots etc. and ingredients to make your own meals to save on buying the already cooked food which is pricier. It is cheaper and adds on the spirit of camping. There is a small centre which is 300m from the camping site where one can go get their resources from. During the night time campers can decide to make a campfire and sit around it telling stories or playing outdoor games such as truth or dare or never have I ever. You can carry your own wood or purchase them from there. For swimming, the uniquely designed pool offers a platform to relax. The other camping activity which is boat riding is conducted by a locally-born captain who has detailed knowledge of birdlife and wildlife in and around the lake. The views from the lake which include the dormant yet smoking Mount Longonot volcano, the Aberdare, Mau ranges and a peek of Hell’s gate. Picnics at the Crescent island with a basketful of food is also available upon request. Crayfish generally offers an amazing experience and you should definitely want to visit the place.

CM'S GUIDE TO CATHOLIC UNIVERSITYOF EASTAFRICA CUEA was founded by the regional ecclesiastical authority known as Association of Member Episcopal Conferences of Eastern Africa (AMECEA) on 3 September 1 984 in Nairobi Kenya as a Graduate School of Theology, under the name the Catholic Higher Institute of Eastern Africa (CHIEA). The main campus is located on Magadi road in Langata, Nairobi Kenya. The University campus is also the host of IBM Research Africa offices.
What It Feels like to Go Here CUEA lies on a beautiful campus, deep in the heart of the Langata, Nairobi. Inside the walls of the university, you will find it has turned into home for a lot of students from a lot of backgrounds, both local and international. This university offers more than just scenery, though. CUEA provides its students a city with student groups, community, great academics and of course, a great football team.
At CUEA, some of the countless things to do include getting involved with some of many student groups dotting the campus, spending time improving your smarts with great academics and attending loads of sports events, ranging from recreational sports to inter-campus sports events. In addition, students here echo the fact that CUEA is a pro at creating and engaging, home-like environment and solid community for students who attend the university.
Where We Hang CUEA students don’t limit themselves to the classroom. Students here love football games and all other sportsrelated activities, but they also enjoy taking time to appreciate the little things in life. Students spend their free time grabbing coffee with pals, traveling and exploring the outdoor scenery that the nearby national park has to offer. “A lot of my friends play rugby, go to the Nairobi national park, go to coffee shops in Karen and lately my friends and I have liked taking day/weekend trips to different towns to hike and camp,” said second year Ben Otieno. Whether they find themselves indoors or outdoors, many CUEA students share the common favorite activity of building and investing in their community of friends. Student Reviews “I’ve really appreciated the intentionality of community building. I was a little scared of how friendly people were at first because I didn’t know how to make sense of it. But what I learned really quickly was people just really, genuinely want you to feel welcome and to help you understand how things work at CUEA and how to be a good citizen of the school.” — Paul “My whole life, I have gone to international schools and have been in class from everywhere around the world. I wanted to find a similar environment also for campus. After the first day and the [International Student Orientation] meeting...I already had the feeling I was in a place that could be a good fit for me.” – Marco
Q&A 1. How much are students partying? “It’s really relaxed, whether you want to go out or not no one judges each other. There’s no pressure to party because there are lots of other things to do,” Ian. “Students at CUEA are pretty focused on their academics and long-term goals. However, there are plenty of students who go out Thursday–Sunday. There are a lot of campuses nearby, so the bar scene is pretty exciting on the mainline. While I would say academics are the primary goal, students also know how to enjoy themselves,” Michael 2. What will you get in trouble for at your school? “One thing that this school is really big on is class attendance. Some kids, though, simply scan into the class and leave the building before class starts, making it probably the thing most students get in trouble for here. Another thing that will get you in trouble is the dresscode. It is quite strict here and you need to adhere to it” Nicole. 3. What would you tell incoming freshman about your school? “One of the things people said when I first came in my visit is CUEA is one big family and after being here for a year that is the truth,” Benjamin . “I would tell freshman to make sure they prioritize academics here from the beginning because the classes are very fast paced. Freshmen should really make an effort to become friends with anyone and everyone in their classes too. It becomes so useful to have friends in all aspects of campus as you get older,” Laeticia.
Awesome Alumni Members of CUEA alumni span across career fields ranging from entertainment industry to politics. Notable alumni include: Stella Kilonzo, former executive director of the Capital Markets Authority of Kenya, Eve D'Souza, media personality, George Khaniri, senator, Vihiga County, Vanessa Mdee, singer just to mention a few of the awesome personalities the institution has produced.

K
icking off on an alien planet with an entirely unfamiliar cast of characters is a bold way to start your big new superhero origin story. But then directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the team behind Mississippi Grind and Half Nelson, don’t pander to audiences. So they set us down on the alien world of Hala and throw us in with Vers (Brie Larson), a mysteriously powered amnesiac training to join “noble warrior heroes” the Kree. She scoffs at authority, drives herself to extremes and sometimes loses her temper. She’s Marvel’s first solo female lead and she is not here to play. If you’ve been slacking in Marvel history class you’ll have to figure out both Kree and Skrull on the fly, because the film doesn’t pause for exposition. The former civilisation is ruled by an AI called the Supreme Intelligence. Vers is mentored by a Kree called Yon-Rogg (Jude Law), a charismatic leader who prepares her for their war against the shape-shifting Skrull. Guardians Of The Galaxy’s baddie Ronan The Accuser is among them (Lee Pace makes an appearance) but that doesn’t mean they’re all genocidal madmen. The Skrull, meanwhile, look like Deep Space Nine visitors, or alternatively like literally anyone, thanks to those camouflage abilities, and that sneaky power creates a rich fug of paranoia over the whole story. One way or another, Vers and her prey end up on Earth in 1 995. The Skrull, led by Ben Mende
Chill Spot lsohn’s Talos, are searching for Dr Wendy Lawson (Annette Bening) to secure an all-important piece of tech she invented. Vers, who’s beginning to recover old memories, learns that she was once test pilot Carol Danvers and that Lawson was her boss. She connects with S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson, stunningly well de-aged) and old BFF Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch, nimbly avoiding limiting token-blackfriend clichés) to save the tech and save the day. There’s a lot to absorb — a few pauses in the first act might have been welcome — and the film is so anxious to emphasise Danvers’ toughness that it sometimes forgets to allow us to glimpse her inner life and (presumable) insecurities; it’s a good thing that Larson is both gifted and charismatic, or she’d be a little dull. It also feels like it’s been chopped down a lot: some glimpses of Mckenna Grace as the young Carol, showing her troubled relationship with her dad, feel surprisingly thin. You also sense that there might have been more for Bening to do, given how good she is in the little time she’s on screen. Still, once Danvers connects with Fury, their odd-couple banter blasts the film into the stratosphere. There are small but fun fight scenes highlighting Danvers’ tenacity, and the joy of seeing Fury having things explained to him for once. There’s a friendly cat called Goose who takes a shine to Fury
and threatens to steal the entire film. It all unrolls to a killer ’90s soundtrack, with bangin’ choons from such decadedefining artists as TLC, Elastica and Hole. And as Danvers spends time with Rambeau, we get our first real glimpse under her skin and into her humanity. It’s the last act before this film truly lives up to its potential, but at crunch time it delivers in a more satisfying way than almost any other superhero film of recent years. Carol Danvers’ final battle offers a radical message and becomes a powerful metaphor for what could happen if we stop waiting to be told that we are enough; if we stop believing the people who tell us we’re too emotional or too weak. Captain Marvel says that, when we stop looking for approval, we can become literally godlike. This is not another cheap girl-power cliché; it’s an explicitly feminist apotheosis. Some people will find it disorientating to watch. Captain Marvel offers zero concessions to ease anyone in or win them over to Carol Danvers’ point of view. If that makes it hard for some viewers to relate to her, she’ll deal.

SOAP RIGHT
Take time to understand what things affect your skin and chose your soap with care. Avoid strong soaps. Strong soaps and detergents can strip oil from your skin. Instead, choose mild cleansers to wach your hands and self.
REMOVE MAKE UP WITH ESSENTIALS OILS
The best make up removers are a blend of essential oils that melt into your skin and remove every last speck of makeup without leaveing your face tight and dehydrated.
SLEEP ON IT
Let’s face the fact that just a night's sleep isn’t enough to fade a circles, lines and dullness that brave the skin stressors the day throws at us. Gelcream will work the graveyard shift with your skin’s natural overnight recovery process to bring life back into it. Charcoal masks will also draw out bacteria and fight acne. Apply mostly on acne-infected areas.
Beauty UP YOUR HYDRATION LEVELS
You’re leaving your skin thirsty more often than you know. In order to keep the skin well moisturized, it is important to choose daily moisturizing skin care products that balance the level of water within the skin well. It is also important to note what skin type you have whether its dry or oily and what special care needs be taken. Call them needy but, with dry skins, if you don't give them moisture they will flake.
DON'T NEGELECT THE LIPS
LOVE YOUR HANDS
You use them all the time, wash them the most, and yet, when was the last time you used a targeted cream just for your hands? Companies have dedicated hand lotions to help them feel soft and smooth as silk and well moistured, Try out one.
As soon as you feel the need, use a restorative cream for the lips. Do not hesitate to reapply to this particularly fragile area as often as necessary.
DON'T SMOKE
Smoking narrows the tiny blood vessels in the outermost layers of skin, which decreases blood flow and makes skin paler. This also depletes the skin of oxygen and nutrients that are important to skin health.

What Are Some of Things That Affect Campus Students?
For those of you in campus, chances are there are numerous things that affect you more than you actually gave thought to initially before joining campus. Now, you can imagine how many other people there are like you who are affected by the same issues in campuses around the country and just want to talk about it. Our writer, Fred Wanjohi took a look at the issue a bit more from your perspective and asked a few students what are some of the things that affect you most in campus.
Speaking from experience, what really affected me was bad company, missing classes to be with older friends with much more campus experience. This lead to really bad results since I used to miss CATS which would add up to me failing my end of semester exams. But experience is a good teacher. At least I got to learn and know the people I should hung out with and to always put my education first.
I think as a student what affects us so much as students is peer pressure. Especially freshermen who have come to this new world where there is no much supervision from teachers like high school so they end up trying new things like drugs just because of pressure from peers. Most students also try to live an expensive life like their peers so they end up using the money that that their parents have given them for school fees.

Life inexperience probably could be the biggest challenge that faces campus students. Every student out here wants to have money to have fun but don’t know how to get it this leads to other students dating older people for money or as we like to call them “sponsors some of them end up getting impregnated which could lead them to dropping out. Institutions should take initiative to give life and guidance and counseling.
Personally what experience as a campus student is lack of finance sometimes as a young lady I want to go out with my girls and enjoy myself in the mall or party but the amount of money given to me by my parents is just not enough. Another thing is money management some of people in campus do not know how to spend their money wisely.
