For the Ladies
HAIR
LetsTalk
Choosing hairstyles for ladies is a night mare in choices. As they are simply endless possibilities & combinations that can be tried out. Here are some that are trending at the moment, are easy to maintain and last long if well taken care of. 1. Box Braids: This is a protective style that is achieved by parting the hairs into tiny sections and then braiding the hair while infusing wefts of braiding hair. Braiding hair is synthetic hair with a thicker texture used to make braids appear longer and thicker. This hairstyle can take from 4 to 8 hours to complete and last for 3 months, at the longest 2. Sew-Ins : This is a durable, low-maintenance hairstyle that can last up to three months with proper care. This style is known as protective styles as it allows women to style their hair without breaking or damaging their natural hair from any heating tools. This technique involves French braiding the natural hair into a circular pattern and using needles to sew the ends of the track into the braided hair. These tracks come in the form of bundles or packs, which are extended collections of hair held together by wefts that vary in length and color.

3. Natural Hair: This is the state-of-being of all hair without assistance from extensions or heated tools. It is one of the most versatile patterns that can be worn in endless ways. This often includes thick-textured hair that results in many curl patterns. This style often requires products due to natural hair being prone to dryness and frizz. It is easily damaged due to humidity and breakage. This damage is why many women often turn to the protective styles listed above, as to not ruin or damage their natural hair. 4. Goddess Braids : These give a tiara kind of look and accentuate the forehead and eyes. It is much like a large inverted cornrow. In this, the hair is not braided completely, but a major portion of it is left flowing. This hair would require synthetic hair as well.

For the Guys
Men, the excuse of having the same hairstyle or haircut has run its course. Nowadays, there are many latest hairstyles for men that can specifically cater to any length and texture without sacrificing masculinity. From professional short haircuts, trendy fade hairstyles, dreadlocks, buzzcuts to funky long hair, men can have it all. Here are some to try out. 1. The High Top Fade : The classic high top haircut is back in all its 90’s glory. Also known as the box cut, the high top fade is a sharp and structured style perfect for those who want manageable but voluminous hair. The style involves a fade down to the base of the neck, with short sides and about 3 inches of hair on top. The top section of the hair is cut into a rectangular shape that gives the box fade its name 2. Mid Fade with Dreadlocks This fade usually creates an arc behind the ears which helps the dreadlocks to stand out regardless of whether your locs are short, long or medium.

3. Fringe Undercut To recreate a fringe undercut hairstyle, allow your hair on the top section to fall on the forehead and combine that with an undercut. Ideally, its best to show your barber an example of the hairstyle you want so that they can advise you on how to maintain it. 4. Two Strand Twists + Fade So first, you take the basic fade, then you add two strand twists at the top. In other words, twist at least two strands together as you see in the photo. Some of the best hairstyles combine contrasts, and the resulting look is pretty unique.

The Queen of
HEADWRAPS
This month, we have a chat with the award winning fashion designer & headwrap stylist, Maryne Keseri. She is the founder of Afrikeseri Kollections, a fashion outfit that deals with all kinds of African wear with a primary focus on womens headwraps and dera clothing. She has appeared in multiple television, radio and magazine interviews to discus her work & what drives her passion for African wear and her designs. She has been named The House of Legacy designer of the year, three years in a row (201 6-201 8) and shows no signs of slowing down. We had a sitdown with her to find out what drives her success. 1. Tell us about yourself? Okay. This is a hard one. I am the first born in a family of five. My roots are from western Kenya but I was born and raised in Nakuru. I am very focused, hardworking and ambitious student & designer at Multimedia University. My hobbies include mat sewing, swimming and I am a fitness enthusiast. I love travelling, which is quite helpful with my line business and I am also into doing charity.
post picture of my clients wearing my outfits and people would like and do enquiries and orders. I also posted on sales groups on facebook and managed to get some orders too. I also managed to get the best suppliers and also know the demographic which was interested in deras.
5. You've had multiple interviews both on television & magazines. How has that impacted on your business? 2. How much did you start with & how did you The interviews, I've had are on a number of various topics. Some of viewers call to mention use this to grow your business? how they like my work & how I inspire them. I started my business with Ksh 5,000, I had On sales, the shows have really boosted these saved up 3000 shillings and I asked a family friend for a loan of 2000 shillings to top it up. I as people are always calling to make orders or ask for our physical locations so that they used the 3K as transport to Mombasa (I was relatively new there) and with the remaining can come and buy our inventory. I have had people call in from as far as Lebanon & The 2K I bought my first stock of deras at Marikiti U.S to make orders because of the magazine market for Ksh 250 a dera. Came back to interviews. I really thank God for them as they school and sold them off mostly to the staff help my business grow. and then using the profits, repeated the process each time expanding my client base. 6. You re particularly known for your 3. How did you handle dissapointment when headwraps but that's not the only thing that you do, is it? starting out? Yes. So ... Pulse live Kenya gave me a name. Every business has its challenges. Especially The Queen of Headwraps. Daily Nation called with deras which are mostly bought by a niche community and also by pregnant ladies me a Jack of all trades but a master of so this could leave me with unsold stock. But headwraps. They were actually right, because through persavearance, I have managed to I am a headwraps stylist, fashion designer and outgrown these and see the business expand an entrepreneur with a boutique & barber shop in Eldoret and mabuyu outlets in Ongata to more clients. Rongai, Nairobi CBD and also Eldoret town. 4. What role do you think social media plays in 7. As a designer, what are some of the your business today? Social media has been of great help especilly toughest moments you've had to face in your line of work? with marketing. When I started out, I would
Wow. We have some pretty serious challenges. For instance, as I am not quite that established, I don't have ready made inventory. Most clients look for ready made Items and if not available, I end up loosing lots of business. Also, the flooding of the dera market with cheap generic products from Eastleigh really cuts down business flow. 8. What's next for Maryne Keseri ? I want to have opened a shoe line in the next couple of months as I am working on the designs now. I also want to have a Monthly fvents TV like series titled 'The Headwrap Affair' starting out at the Coast, heading to Central Kenya, Rift Valley then Western and finally culminating in Nairobi for a series finale in one of the Fancy hotels. I also intend to have a beauty parlour and a photography studio for my clientelle. 9. What inspires you and how you work? I had a rough childhood growing up and I wouldn't want my siblings or children, any children to go through the same. I hope to open up a rescue center, Afrikeseri Rescue Center for children especially for the 'Boy Child' who doesn't receive as much care as they should. My family is my primary inspiration though and I can't let myself rest until I get what I want for them. They are proud of me and it's this pride that keeps me going. 1 0. What
Is Making MILLENIALS
So BROKE ! I
'm pretty sure that everyone's parents (and even mine!) constantly drill into your heads how lucky you are or how spoilt you are compared to ‘their time’. You know what? Your parents aren’t wrong. They lived in a time and survived a period where money was hard to come by. So hard that some of them couldn’t even afford high school education let alone higher education, unlike you – and that’s only the tip of the iceberg for them with regards to the challenges that they’ve faced in their lifetime. While your whole future lies ahead of you from
now till you graduate and post-graduation, there will be more challenges whether you like it or not. Challenges beyond working on assignments, sitting for final exams or pursuing a higher education. Yup. We’re talking about money matters. Knowing that basically everyone your age feels an intense pressure to keep up appearances, both online and in real life, can actually give you an edge when it comes to learning about financial planning and how to change your status from broke to ... well not broke. This actually begs the question, why are millennials broke?
Mai Everything Is Expensive! Here’s the truth: trying to manage your finances in your 20’s is tough. Even the working crowd who are in their 30’s will tell you the same thing as it’s not something you stop doing. Of course, looking at where you tend to spend too much and saving for your future is the smart thing to do – but it isn’t always a fun thing to do. What if you’re forced to spend a certain amount a month whether or not you want to? We’re not talking about luxuries like holidays and shopping sprees. In general, the cost of living around the world is on the rise. Here in Kenya, the price of everyday items are rising, including general food products and even fuel. Furthermore, with the recent budget announcement for 201 7, it was announced that a GST (Goods and Services Tax) will be implemented. If you don’t know what GST is, it’s a broad-based consumption tax covering all sectors of the economy. Yes, it will affect Kenyan rich and poor, old and young, employed or unemployed. Why do we need to pay taxes like these? Well, that is so that the government can finance socio-economic development; which includes providing infrastructure, education, welfare, healthcare, national security etc. That and also to pay off some pretty serious Chinese debt. Millenials Are Spending Under Pressure Loans and low incomes seem to hold a lot of the blame for why millennials are so broke, but there is also some weirdness when it comes to how we spend our money. Most millennials feel a weird pressure to keep up the appearance that they aren’t actually broke and social media is one major source of this pressure. Social media has created a new set of rules. It used to be that the style conscious might
consider an outfit for an evening and wonder whether the other dinner guests might have seen it previously. Now, once the outfit is displayed on social media, every single person the trend-setter knows has seen it, meaning it’s dead and new outfits are in order Millenials Are More Exposed Wait, but isn't that a good thing? Yes, it is. However, if you consider that a decade ago we never had to worry about such things as money to buy data daily, to pay for Uber, look for an AirBnB, go on that random Tinder date, to do quick impulsive online shopping or go for that retreat you saw in an online ad. It is not so good for our finances. Also being exposed to more opportunities in Campus exposes us to people from higher social classes and in a bid to keep up, we end up spending way more than we actually have in a bid to keep up appearances. Instant Gratification Millenials were enabled as kids and didn’t learn responsibility or how to fend for themselves so they make poor decisions. Ultimately this generation has been set up to fail more than our parent's generation ever was. We have become more of a credit
Main Feature fact that the millennial generation has more access to information than our parents did gives us leeway to navigate most of these issues. A little discipline and attending financial literacy classes like those offered by Waceke Nduati's Centonomy can aid us to chart brighter financial futures. Fiscal discipline Have a budget and always stick to one! It’s the most important tool to properly plan the ‘in’ and ‘out’ of your pocket. If you spend less than what you earn, you’ll definitely end up with a surplus that leads into savings and investments. You don’t want to end up with a deficit that’ll require loans or the tightening of your belt, do you? If you continuously sit on deficit budgets, say for over a decade, you’d be buying a one-way ticket to financial hell. Rain Rain, Go Away Saving for rainy days is good but don’t forget that there are a few types of rainy days. Two, in fact. A ‘predictable rainy day’ is when you know it will fall e.g time to pay off a loan. There’s also an ‘unpredictable rainy day’ when you just don’t know when or how bad it will be. Incidents such as car accidents or illnesses (yours or any one of your family members) fall under the ‘unpredictable rainy day’ type of rainy day. By saving each month, you will be more prepared when something happens. Be Honest With Yourself To quote Will Smith, “Too many people spend money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t need, to impress people they don’t like.” If Non-Existent Financial Lessons you spend your own money on or for yourself, it’s In Africa, the way most of us were brought up. We prudent. If you spend your own money on or for were taught that money is evil and to shun it. others, it’s generosity. If you spend someone else’s Having a discussion around money is almost as money on or for someone else’s interest, our similar as having a discussion around sex - a taboo question is, why are you even doing that? Be honest and bad manners. Thus we grow up knowing with yourself! Spend according to affordability and nothing about financial responsibility such as saving rationality, and cut wastage and leakages. for the future. Here’s the bottom line, Wants and needs are two Fewer Jobs very different things that are often confused. We It is an open secret that older generations are not have to live and consume within our means, thus to dying or retiring as they usually do thus taking jobs save wisely. At times, millennials would otherwise occupy. This leaves a lot it can be a struggle but it’s all about the choices we of talent being churned out of our universities with make, be it daily or five-yearly. If you don’t expect no jobs to go to. In turn, graduates end up doing to support others later on in life because of the bad things that they never studied for at low pay to get money decisions that they’ve made, don’t expect a paycheck. Also, over the years, inflation levels others to support you too have risen making the cost of everything to rise.
But all is not lost in doom and gloom as it seems, the

Maasai Market AWalkThrough
Maasai Markets in Nairobi are great places to shop for and see amazing handicrafts from indeginous tribes around the coutry. The colorful Maasai markets mainly sell traditional wares ranging from wooden sculptures, beaded necklaces, batik wall hangings, shoes, soap stone carvings, sisal bags, kikois, textiles and a whole host of other exciting goods.
The Maasai Market has endured the test of time and numerous re-locations by the Nairobi City Council to become the premier market for African artefacts and curios in Nairobi for the many tourists who throng the city as the main start point in their exploration of Kenya’s tourist destinations. Maasai market borrows its name for the Maasaione of Kenya’s Tribes and one that has retained its culture, traditions, identity and pride. What I love about the market is how easy the Jua Kali artisans are able to pick on trends and provide an artistic alternative with the best examples being Candle holders, ladies bags, clutches, wall hangings, wallets, Sandals, clothing and utensils such as bowls, table cloths, spoons etc. This to me is what perfecting an art means. Maasai Market Schedule Below is a schedule of where to catch these Jua Kali artisans and find that unique wedding gift or items for your home or wardrobe. Monday -There is usually no market on this day. Tuesday – Kijabe Street Park next to Nairobi River and Prestige Plaza along Ngong Road. Wednesday – Capital Center along Mombasa rd Thursday – The junction Mall & along Ngong road Friday – The Village market along Limuru road & Lavington Mall Saturday -The High court parking in the city Center opposite Re-Insurance Plaza & Prestige Plaza along Ngong road Sunday -Yaya Center along Valley Road in Hurlingham
Although many of their items which sometimes are not given a good finishing touch, I have a weakness for them because they are unique and make one’s home or dressing seem very elegant. The items are priced quite fairly compared to
similar shops found along Nairobi’s Biashara street or those in upmarket malls. Tips Fot Shopping at Maasai Market 1. Be very specific on quality and don’t just buy an item from the first artisan who sells to you if the finishing has not been well done. Chances are, there is another who has perfected the item’s quality – especially for items such as wall hangings, ornaments or kitchenware. 2. Be the typical Kenyan, in other words, bargain till you run him/her out of breath. Kenyans have perfected the art of bargaining except in when they go to 5 star hotels. From experience, the markets at Kijabe Street and the High court parking have the best rates as they are perceived to be for Kenyans as opposed to those in up-market venues like malls. It’s all about perceptions and the venue cost. The items and the traders are the same ones in all these markets. Bargaining Tips Once you have walked around, noted which traders/stalls have the items you want. You can now proceed with the actual buying. bargaing is part of our culture as Kenyans so be ready to engage in some back and forth. Here are some tips that I have always used and which work like a charm. a). Ask how much the item is nonchalantly b). Act shocked (chances are, the trader has given you the cost with a very high mark up) c). State matter of factly that you have half of that amount d). Insist that that’s the only amount you have and you were actually looking for something else e). If they are adamant on their rate, pretend to be going to another trader, chances are, they will call you as you leave. f). Depending on how much time you have, sometimes you will only add at most Ksh. 50 or Ksh. 1 00 above your stated amount.

Africa Nazarene University is a private, Christian founded institution and an affiliate of The Church of the Nazarene Colleges and Universities around the world. The main campus - Leah T. Marangu - is located at Ongata Rongai and is approximately 22 kilometers south of Nairobi City Center.
-What it feels like to go here
It feels awesome. You get to learn so many things. You get to see new things and experience new amazing things every day. Its a scenic place. You learn with animals, where else do you do that. Mike Otako You get to interact with new people from different cultures with different traditions and expectations. You learn new things everyday and the scenes are just amazing. Linda Barasa
-Awesome Alumni
You wouldn’t believe the number of recognizable names and faces that trekked KU’s hilly grounds before you. Take Tom Wanjala who works for radio China. Lois Lihanda, The first ever Miss Albinism Kenya(We did an interview with her on our first issue. Check it out on our website). Akuku Danger, the commedian. Maurice Oniang’o, 201 5 Environment Reporter of the Year, Michael Were Mukhusiah, SuperSport's Bonga Boli competition winner 201 8 just to mention a few.
-Student Reviews
"I was most surprised by the type of community that MMU has. It’s a very warm and welcoming environment. My favorite part about the University is that there is always something to do on or off campus. There’s really something for everyone.” – Linda "MMU is a very different experience for everyone. There are thousands of ways to get involved and meet plenty of different people. As someone who didn’t have any friends or family in MMU or Rongai, prior to moving into school, I found it was very easy to make friends. The nearby Rongai town is a very laid-back and easy going. My education process has been wonderful." Mike
-Getting In
The admission process for MMU has only a few requirements. You can join through KUCPS or PSSP. Other requirements are KCSE certificate or past academic records from recognized examination bodies.
-Top 3 Courses Journalism B.Com BSc. IT
-Top Student Organizations The CU Accounting and Finance Club Drama Club (Masqueraiders) AISEC
-Where we hang
Don’t stress if you’d rather spend more time in a low-key environment. The university also has tons of places to hangout and chill if you’re looking for a more relaxing spot. Some of the most popular ones are the Church, the swimming pool, nature park, the gazebos, behind the library, pavilion. The most favorite places though would have to be at 'Chafua' and the stadium.
-What would you tell incoming freshman about your school?
"Brace for some serious academic work. Because these people tend to be serious when it comes to academics. Here there actually isn't any culture shock. There are few things to do outside of academics as there are no things such as a gym, so fitness buffs will have to make their own arrangements to keep fit." Mike "Join clubs, religious organizations such as the Christian Union. Be religios, the school is quite open to different religions as we even have a mosque within the grounds." Mercy
-How much are the students partying?
When it comes to nightlife, MMU’s party never ends on the weekends. With nearly 20 bars in Ongata Rongai, students can be found hitting up budget-friendly drink specials and hanging out with friends almost every other weekend. In school though, not so much. If you come into the school over the weekend, don't be suprsised to find ghost town.
What has been one takeaway from your campus experience thus far?
"The learning experience. You learn to be punctual in everything you do. I have learnt that you need some level of seriousness and also to grab opportunities around you or other people will grab them while youre still contemplating. You get to learn to stand for yourself and be your own person. no matter what comes your way.

Advice
TOP TIPS TO KEEP YOUR HAIR PROFESSIONAL
There is some heavy truth to the idea that a person's choice of hairstyle makes a statement about them. Depending on your workplace, expressing your personality and sense of individualism through your hairstyle can be a tricky situation to navigate. Furthermore, not paying attention to the messages your hairstyle conveys can be just as much of a problem. Here are some great tips to help you ensure your hair makes a solid impression in your place of business. Whether you own your own business or work for someone else, these tips will help you keep your hairstyle professional and workplace-appropriate.
If your hair is long, avoid playing with it or touching it. Doing so makes you appear youthful and immature, which can adversely affect your credibility and sense of authority. It’s one thing to tie it up, but twirling it or continuing to fuss with it may impact how others view you. Short, but not super styled, is the way to go. An Individual who shows up for a corporate position with an overstyled hairdo will be perceived as high maintenance, finicky, and as someone who wastes time on things other than work. In most professional settings, having your hair an unnatural color is considered inappropriate. While it can be fun to sport some purple locks, your manager and/or clients may frown upon it. If you are going to go with extensions, find some that are natural and will not damage your hair. These will offer versatility, but will not do damage to your looks. As a bonus, the more natural your hair looks, the more professional you will come across to others. Keep your hair clean. As simple as this sounds, it's not actually that simple. Wash & shampoo your hair regularly and apply oils give a neat and shiny appearance. Not only does a clean hair give you confidence, it also leaves you more focused on tasks at hand.

t this point, it may be a good idea to clone Tom Cruise, if only to ensure he can continue to churn out installments to the “Mission: Impossible” series for years to come — so long, that is, if they are all as good as Christopher McQuarrie’s “Mission: Impossible Fallout.” This latest is a fantastic ride, and may be the best installment in the series yet. Set two years after the last instalment, Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation, the dastardly Syndicate group has morphed into the Apostles after the capture of its leader Solomon Lane (Sean Harris). When Ethan (Cruise), Benji (Simon Pegg) and Luther (Ving Rhames) receive intel that fundamentalist members of the Apostles plan to detonate three nuclear bombs in crowded religious centres, the team tries to disrupt the sale of the plutonium cores. The mission fails when Ethan
chooses to save Luther’s life and the bombs are in the wind. After the latest cock-up, CIA director Erica Sloan (Angela Bassett) sends her agent August Walker (a moustachioed Henry Cavill) on the next mission with Ethan. Walker is a brute force kind of guy, preferring to punch, shoot and kill first, which makes him Ethan’s opposite and foil. The mission puts them in the path of a duplicitous arms dealer named White Widow (Vanessa Kirby) who is to serve as an intermediary for the plutonium cores, which Ethan can only get his hands on if he agrees to free Lane. He also faces off with Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson), the MI5 agent who’s determined to kill Lane. Ferguson’s return is a first for the franchise, which usually leaves its female cast members behind, only carrying over the men from one film to the next. Ditto with director Christopher
McQuarrie, who previously directed Rogue Nation, becoming the first MI repeat director.Michelle Monaghan, who played Ethan’s wife Julia in the third movie — she has popped up in cameo form once before and also returns in Fallout, which is supposed to be the culmination of all of Ethan’s choices up to this point, coming home to roost.Mission Impossible has never been super concerned about legacy until now and it’s refreshing to see it devote so much story time and character development to the consequences of Ethan’s decades gallivanting around the world playing hero, which tends to leave a lot of collateral damage.

When it comes to phone releases, no on does more per month than Xiaomi, and in my honest opinion, they should go slow on this . It clouds the market and confuses the consumers as they are all almost similar. That aside, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus is one of the best phones produce by the company and comes at quite a bargain. WASH YOUR HAIR ONCE EVERY 1 TO 2 WEEKS The more often you wash your hair, the more you strip it of its moisture. This results in dry, brittle hair. You should wash your hair every 7 to 10 days, but you can get away with washing it once every 14 days. Washing your hair prevents dryness and product buildup. If you can't find a shampoo and conditioner meant for ethnic hair, try to use a moisturizing shampoo meant for dry hair & then follow up with a moisturizing conditioner. If you must wash your hair more often, dilute your shampoo with 50% water and 50% shampoo.

DO NOT USE WRONG HAIR BANDS
With the blustery weather conditions, it's tempting to quickly tie hair back away from the wind and rain. However, using elastic or plastic bands will pull on the hair resulting in damaged cuticles, friction and stress. Use bands covered in silk or satin. The smooth surface will help protect from breakage and damage and secretly, your hair couldn't be more happy about it!
4
WRAP YOUR HAIR IN SILK SCARF BEFORE BED Wrap hair in a silk scarf. This will help ensure the moisture is retained, so you're less likely to need to resort to heated appliances and extra product because your hair will already be beautifully hydrated.
Beauty Beauty USE THE RIGHT HAIR BRUSH
A boar bristle brush or a wet brush should be your best friend! With long hair, It's super important that your hair brush helps smooth the hair shaft, to minimize any breakage. A natural fiber brush, like the boar bristle, helps to minimize friction when brushing. Therefore, the hair doesn't get caught on any knots, leaving the hair smooth and silky without pulling out hair strands. The trusty wet brush also does a fantastic job as the bristles bend around any tangles putting less stress on the hair.
7
GO NATURAL EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE
Let your hair go natural every once in a while for a few weeks. This is especially important if you are using highstress hairstyles, such as weaves, cornrows, and braids. While fashionable, these styles put a lot of strain on your hair. Let your hair go natural for a week or two in between styles so that it can relax. If you must do something with your hair, consider wrapping a scarf or headband around it, or adding in a cute hair clip.

Language Barrier I had gone to see the assistant Dean of students over a pro ject I was interested in doing within the institution. Being a governm ent run varsity, bureaucracy was rife and after being gven the run around for a while, I was eventually directed to the Dean of students office to address my request. When I got to the deans office, which was on the fourth flou r of a building with no lift, I found some former students of the institution who had come to do clearance with the sports wasn’t quite pleased with one of the students mohawk hairoffian do and the hair he’d left at the sides to finish off his look. He decided to express his dissapointment and when he saw the students native tongue and rattled on for about 5 minutes while theo the student calmly listened to him and nodded along. When he was done, he intoned with "Umesikia Vizuri” to ensu re that his message got home and the student repl ied him just as calmly as he was listening to him with ‘To be honest, I don much of my tribal language so i haven’t really understood’t know what you were saying’. I had to hold my nose and turn around in order to avoid bur sting into an uncontrollable fit as the assistant Dean sat there look ing like a bewildered fool trying to decide if he should repeat his rant in a language that the student understood or just attend to the next persons problems. He chose to go with the latter.
