Time Sure flies!

It's just the other day that we were setting plans for the year and now we just have a month and a half to close off that year. Worldwide, October is designated as the Cancer awareness month so let's not remember to do all possible tests to asses your health and attend the free clinics being offered by various organizations in and around Campus. This month, we're introducing some new sections in the magazine just for you on top of the awesome content we usually have for you. We have introduced a second column for interviews to get more students talking about what they are into in their professional lives, more recipes for your expansive palletes and the Doodle page now includes Memes of the month replacing the preious humorous jokes that we had. In the next issue, We shall introduce Campus Talk where we ask student opinions on serious Campus Issues that affect students and what they think about them. And that's not all that we have for you. Some of our fantastic regular sections such as 'Escape', Series review, TV review and Techzone have amazing content written just for you. Don't forget to check out Ivy Muigai's amazing review of Zetech University and how the students find life here. This being the third issue of CampusMag, it is my pleasure to inform you that from the next issue of the magazine. We shall be having the magazine's issue editors coming in from various campuses and serving three month stints. Do you think you have what it takes to be an editor for this amazing publication? Send your sample works and ideas to any of the email adresses provided below. On a final note, we had an issue with our last publication in which we accidentally placed the wrong text on a section for the article on campus review. We humbly apologise for this grave mistake and we promise to pay more attention in our editorial process in the future. As Always, Dream BIG, Work Hard and Stay Focused .. Don't Forget to Play even Harder

WHAT TO WEAR AND

WHAT NOT TO WEAR

TO AN INTERVIEW Words : Mercy Apondi

You've spent weeks trying to land that big interview with your dream company and you finally got it. But before you step into that interview, consult the guide below to make the best first impression possible. Because a first impression is a form of nonverbal communication, you must be ready for snap judgements and prepared to turn them in your favor. There’s a lot of grey area and deciding what to wear for a job interview can be a daunting task. Dress codes usually fall into one of three categories: casual, business casual, or business. So let’s dispel the grey.

CASUAL WEAR

Make sure you’ve done your homework before showing up dressed casually to an interview. Remember, you can never be overdressed but you can certainly be underdressed. If you do land an interview and you’re sure that you should be dressing casually, you’ll want to look smart, not casual. For women, pair dark denim with a blouse and some simple jewelry. The key is to look polished. The top should be dressier to balance out the denim and you should absolutely wear a professional shoe with this look.

For men, it’s about sending that same message: casual, crisp, and clean. Even if it’s a casual look, wear a collar because t-shirts won’t cut it in a job interview. Dark denim paired with a shirt with good lines and thoughtful accessories will do the trick — you can never go wrong with a strong watch. You might be able to get away with sneakers, but they should be dressy sneakers, not your trainers.

BUSINESS CASUAL

If you’ve researched the company and you still don’t know what to wear, go for business casual interview attire. When in doubt, it’s almost always business casual. Most simply put, this dress code means business clothing without a mandatory tie or jacket. For women, business casual interview attire is a sharp button-up shirt or a conservative blouse paired with trousers or a skirt. You could also wear a tailored dress. Shoes should absolutely be business appropriate — flats, loafers, or heels. Ladies, do not wear shoes that are uncomfortable. Keep cleavage to a minimum and skirts at knee length. For men, business casual interview attire means a collared shirt (tie optional) and dress pants. While a jacket is also optional, it does set a polished tone. Every other candidate is probably wearing a black or grey suit with a similar shirt and tie combo. Stand out with a unique shirt or suit color. If you’re totally against wearing a jacket, you could choose dress pants with a dress shirt under a nice sweater. This is a comfortable look that will keep you looking professional and feeling at ease.

BUSINESS

For men and women alike, business means that you want to look as tailored as possible-- you want to look as if your clothing was cut especially for you. For women, a traditional suit is a solid option, but there are also some nontraditional items available that can achieve the dress code just as well. Stick to the rule of dress pant/skirt and jacket and find a creative balance that will work for you.

For men, your clothing options are more limited. You’re going to have to wear a full suit, tie included. But, you can spice it up by adding interesting pieces like a vest or a sweater that will give some dimension to your otherwise simple look. You can also add touches like cufflinks to your suit to show a little flair.

MAKEUP Makeup should be minimal and natural. Do not wearthe smoky eye look for your interview or red lipstick. Neutral shades and a single coat of mascara is appropriate. NAIL CARE Every detail counts. For both men and women, clean nails are a must. Women should choose a natural shade if you decide to put on nail color - no neon.

OVERALL GROOMING

FACIAL HAIR You should be clean shaven before your interview. If you wear facial hair, make sure it is well groomed. If you are unsure what facial hair is appropriate, look at the other men in your industry.

A Minute to

PrayzzZ

This month, we have a chat with the music artist and actor, PrayzzZ from Africa Nazarene University. PrayzzZ's work has been featured in local stations and he has appeared in multiple TV shows promoting his work and he has also been a guest in EBRU TVs controversial hook up show. We had a sit down with him to find out what drives his work.

Why the name PrayzzZ Praise is my name actuallly. But I looked at how to best brand myself from an African and Global perspective and I slightly modified my name. I like it as you can't pinpoint where in Africa it is from. What genre of music do you do view your music as and who inspires your work? I have a BIG issue with this whole genre thing coz i dn't like being in a box and that kinda puts you in it. Art is fluid and I'd like to express myself as I feel at any given moment. If you listen to my album, Aftermath, you'll notice the huge variety in all the fourteen songs in it. What got you into music? It's a very funny story. January 201 7. I didn't have any plans at all. So my bro had a studio session and asked me to come along. Since I had nothing to do at the moment, I went with him. I remember the producer was working on a beat and I was feeling it. So I asked him if I can jump in on it and he said sure. I remember that weekend we ended up doing four songs and I was ectastic. After that I did the album Test Drive and then Aftermath and now I'm working on a third album. How do you seek out opportunities? I don't really have a formula but what I look for in opportunities is not from a short term perspective. I'm all about building relationships. To be honest, a lot of opportunities actually come to me. You never really know who is watching so I've learnt to put in my best work in every thing I do and the work kinda just sells me. What songs do you perform most frequently and do you play covers? It depends on the kind of event or show I'm in coz not every song goes with every event. For example, I can't do a trap song at a wedding.

On covers. I used to do covers. Actually, the last time I did a cover was in January this year. A Wizkid song. What is the best song you've ever done? Umm, for me, let me say the most fulfiling song I've ever done is Pretty Lady. That's because of the story behind it. That song was actually an accident. We'd been recording the whole day and we went into the night like eleven, twelve. The producer had given me a track to work on and I had my headphones on all the time I was working on it. So when I needed a break, I took my headphones off and that's when I heard him playing this other amazing beat. So I just stood. I was pacing and the hook just came to me. So I told my producer, 'Hey bro, I am not doing this alone. I want you in it as well.' So we actually did work on a few ideas for his verse and the swahili fusion sounded really good. And the Interesting part of that song is that we actually did everything in under seven hours, napping time included. And it's one of the most popular breakout songs in the album. Given the opportunity, who would you like to colaborate with? I have four right now. Actually five. Wow! Basically Burna Boy, Sauti Sol, Nasty C, WizKid of course and Khaligraph coz he does that trap thing I do. His trap songs have stories. Not just meaningless catchy words thrown around with beats. What would you want your fans to remember about you? Hmm. He changed my life. I want my fans to think of me and go, 'He changed my life'. Coz for me, it's bigger than just music. I want them to be inspired by my work and my life. I want them to have feelings that relate to and are related to my songs.

Do you get nervous before a perfomance Yeah I do. I used to think that getting nervous was a problem until, I can't remember who said it but it is one of those people look up to. He said, 'The day you no longer feel butterflies in your stomach when doing something, wake up and leave and look for something else to do' How do you balance music with your other obligations such as school, love life, acting and general life? It just boils down to priorities. You have to learn how to plan your time and stick to schedule. It is easy to get carried away with one thing and forget another. What's the strangest thing you've heard from fans in a concert? Well, there's a lot. But I once had a lady fan come up to me after a performance and just directly say that she wanted to have my baby. To make it even weirder, she said she'd take care of it. Like, I don't have to do anything or think about it. I've also had advances from guys and I just had to learn to deal with this kind of extra attention and not be mad or throw a fit. It is part of the package. What would you tell people who want do music? Make sure it is what you want to do. Making the song is easy. What happens after is where the work is. The sleepless nights, the constant planning and marketing your work. It's intense, so if you want to be an artist, look into yourself and decide its what you really really want to do. Parting shot Never feel like you know it all or that you've 'Arrived'. That's the fastest way to destroy yourself.

Wijdaan Wayua

Wijdaan Wayua is a Hijab fashion model who works with Hafsa Doll house, which is a major Fashion House in Nairobi. Through her modeling career she’s been able to showcase the beauty of the hijab and prove that one can wear the Hijab and still have their their personal style intact. Wijdaan took her time to talk to CampusMag and tell us more about herself and Hijab fashion. Words : Fred Wanjohi Tell us about yourself. I was born and raised in Mombasa county and I am in love with fashion and design despite being a media student, I also love travelling and I am a model and makeup artist . When did you discover your love for fashion? It all started when I was a kid, I always loved dressing well and trying out different styles. If you grew up in a family like mine, modesty was the norm and growing up, I was taught that some things are not worn in public. Today I can say “I wear heels and walk proudly” knowing that modesty is the freedom to be creative, comfortable and contented with the beauty God gave you. Tell us a bit about Hijab Fashion? I am a Muslim and in Islam is where I found the true beauty of staying modest. Hijab not only gives me confidence but also makes me standout. I have learnt that wearing Hijab is not a sign of personal pity as the Western Media likes to potray it, but that it reflects individual and common identities. It forces society to look past my appearance and to look at me for who I am and what I represent with what I consider most important : my intellect. I think Hijab fashion has made me and other young Muslim girls more confident.

is more about modesty and virtues, there’s a predominant misconception that Muslim women are forced to wear long black dresses and face veils; however the Quran does not explicitly tell a woman what type of scarf or dress to wear and how one should wear it. It’s simply prescribed to dress modestly and every Muslim woman has the right to interpret modesty the way she wishes and feels appropriate for herself and that’s where Hijab fashion comes in to give you that opportunity to show your personal So what is Hijab fashion is all about? style and at same time strengthening Hijab is something very personal to a your relationship with God. Muslim woman, and it means something Do we have hijab for different occasions? different for each on of them. Personally, Just like all other types of fashion clothes it serves a dual purpose, in which I use it hijab also has different styles for different to strengthen my relationship with God occasions. We have bridal wear, Fancy and as a means of empowerment. Hijab and also official.

Who is your mentor in your modeling career? Hafsa, who is the CEO of Hafsa Doll house, is my mentor. She took me under her wings when I started my modeling career in 201 6 and taught me everything I needed to know about modeling and until now I continue learning more about modelling and hijab fashion. Do you think the internet plays a part in hijab fashion and modeling? Yes it has because in today's world everyone and everything is on the internet. I personally follow all kinds of women in the fashion industry on social media and read fashion blogs to get inspiration. We use the internet to market and socialize with people who like our modelling shoots and our customers and also to showcase our designs and my brand as Wijdaan and also the Hafsa Doll House brand. What next for Wijdaan Wayua? I pray that God helps me with my modeling career since I have plans of traveling and pursuing a course in fashion and design. I also plan on starting my own fashion house and build an empire from there. It is not going to be easy but I am patient and I will continue working hard for it like the Queen I am. Parting shot? Go for what you belive in and listen to your heart. Don’t stop when you're tired, but only when you're done.

Health

A flat belly is a badge of honour. It’s an outward sign that you keep fit and watch what you eat. Beyond the vanity aspects, a more chiseled torso makes you stronger and less prone to injury. That’s because the dozens of muscles between your shoulders and hips are involved in every movement you do. To create a lean, rock-hard waist you need to start with the right moves. We compiled five of these for you.

MOUNTAIN CLIMBER

Think of the mountain climber as a moving plank. You perform a mini crunch when you explosively draw one knee into your chest. What makes this move so difficult, however, is that your core has to work overtime to keep your body stable and straight every time you lift a foot off of the floor.

DO IT : Assume a pushup position with your hands below your shoulders and your body forming a straight line from your head to your heels. This is the starting position. Lifting your right foot off of the floor, drive your right knee towards your chest. Tap the floor with your right foot and then return to the starting position. Alternate legs with each repetition.

BURPEE

If you want to lose your gut, you need to work as many muscles as possible. The burpee does just that. The explosive exercise – which entails going from a pushup position to a jump and back to a pushup position – hits every muscle from head to toe.

DO IT : Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Lower your body until your palms rest on the floor about shoulder-width apart. Kick your legs backward into a pushup position, perform a pushup, and then quickly reverse the movement and perform a jump when you stand. That's 1 rep.You need to do at least 20 reps a day for this to work.

MEDICINE BALL SLAM

If you haven’t used a medicine ball, you’re missing out. Your core is your center of power, so performing explosive movements like the med-ball slam requires all the muscles between your neck and your hips to work together. And if you pick up the pace and propel the ball with more power and velocity, you’ll elevate your heart rate and burn some serious belly flab. You don’t even need to increase the weight. A 3-kilo medicine ball (Or Regular ball) will work just fine if you go hard and push yourself.

DO IT : Hold the ball above your head with your feet shoulder-width apart. Slam the ball on the floor as hard as you can. Catch the rebound and repeat.

DUMBELL OVERHEAD LUNGE

Add a dumbbell overhead during a lunge, and you suddenly have a core chiseler. As the load shifts with every rep, all of the muscles in your torso need to work together to keep the weight directly above you. The move engages your back and butt, too, because hunched shoulders and weak glutes also contribute to a bulging belly.

DO IT : Grab a pair of medium- to light-weight dumbbells. Press the dumbbells overhead so your palms face each other. Be careful not to scrunch your shoulders up by your ears. Step forward into a lunge position, pause, and then bring your back leg forward to step your feet together. Alternate legs as you walk forward.

KETTLEBELL SWING

The kettlebell swing might be one of the best calorie-torching exercises of all time. In order to propel the heavy ball of iron, you need to engage big fat-burning muscle groups like your glutes, hips, and quads. The explosive nature of this movement skyrockets your heart rate right away, but it also hammers your core. The momentum of the bell at the top of the swing will try to pull you forward, so you have to clench your abs as if you were performing a standing plank.

DO IT: Bend at your hips and hold a kettlebell with both hands at arms length down in front of you. Rock back slightly and “hike” the kettlebell between your legs. Then squeeze your glutes, thrust your hips forward forcefully, and swing the weight to shoulder height. Reverse the move between your legs and repeat.

Advice

BLESSING OR Curse

Sponsor, a slang that is often associated with older men and at times women who, in return for sponsoring students lifestyles, are given sex and the joys of dating a young person who is virile and in the prime of their youth. The slang is used as a replacement for the 'Sugar Daddy/Mommy' and it literally referes to the main act they do in the relationship, that is to ‘sponsor’ their partner. Dating sponsors is viewed by some to be empowering and profitable or as lack of moral compass. Depending on who you ask. To the sponsor, the relationship is a way to show oppulance by being someone who is able to maintain a youngling, both in and out of bed. Moreso. they control the relationship and can end it at whim and pick up another with the same ease.

T 1T

hese relationships may be good while they last for the people in it to be 'sponsored' but the moment they end, thats when the rain starts beating them as they have been given a taste of finer things in life and now they an only want more. This and several other dangers that are not seen coming at the start of it all is the bane of this opinion / advice piece. I will try and highlight a few of the disadvantages of dating sponsors in this post.

LOVELESS Affair

There is no physical attraction, sexual attraction or emotional feelings involved in it all. In most instances therefore you find that you put up with somebody who you don’t even like just to get something that you want. This gradually leads to you developing hard cold feelings towards that person and may get annoyed and start looking at them in disgust with a lot of vengeance inside. They may use what it is that you are seeking and hold that over your head or use that against you making you mostly feel less worthy.

2S

GREY Areas

Some sponsors also tend to grow feelings towards you seeing as you are having a sexual relationship which by default, in my own opinion of course, can cause them to feel jealous or even outraged whenever they feel threatened by you wanting to move on or have a relationship outside of them. It may cause them to act as if you are actually a couple and their emotions may get mixed up as to what the relationship really is to you regardless of what it was in the beginning. This may create a more stressful environment and life for you recallingthe way you guys actually started out. The major reason most sponsors are here, is to satisfy their kinky desires or fetishes which their spouses won’t really provide and anytime they get more than they bargained for, they usually want to stay longer than they were supposed to.

Advice

STIs & HIV/AIDS

TIs and and the increase in HIV/Aids risk is something that can not be ignored. The sponsors in most cases being in control of the sex life with their ‘partners’ like to have things their way as a return value for 'sponsoring'. Most ladies and younger boys have admitted to the fact that these sponsors do not use protection. For you to get the favors you actually want, you have to abide by the sexual terms placed on you by them. This, brings to consideration the fact that they do not disclose their status willingly making a risk of you contracting a myriad plethora of STIs and not to forget the main virus.

F 4

GRIEVOUS Harm

inally, risk of death for the beneficiaries. It is not suprising to hear stories of love gone sour and ladies killed in the process. We have witnessed the death of many young people most especially girls who have been in the sponsorbeneficiary relationships. Generally, the girls develop a thirst for more money than the expense granted to them by these sponsors, they in turn push the sponsors to a certain limits which makes the relationship start having ‘issues’ because of the 'extortion' problem. The lady having noted that the sponsor has declined granting the increase in allowances, may get tempted to look for other sponsors. The initial or rather main sponsor of this lady as explained earlier gets jealous / angry or feel betrayed and this may result in homicidal thoughts going through their minds. Some follow throuh these with tragic actions asa self sought out solution to maintain their status quo. At other times, the lady knowing the sponsor is some rich guy, will tend to blackmail them into exposure through their jobs or to their family, this causes rage in the sponsors and they will plan an execution due to the trust issues developed as some of these people don't take threats so lightly.

In conclusion, sponsor relationships are not a guarantee to happiness as they presume to be nor are they a shortcutto riches. It is most especially hard living a hard, secretive and unhappy life. In my opinion, ladies find a man you are attracted to, build each other and desist from sponsors. Money is not really the solution to everything. Making flashy statements that you really can’t really afford on your own wont really add value in the long run. These relationships are business relationships and not love as they are supposed to actually be when two people 'see' each other.

Chill Spot

A

dios,” mutters Benicio del Toro’s steely hitman Alejandro Gillick before unloading eight bullets into a corrupt lawyer in a theatrical display of wrath without breaking a sweat - an appropriate re-introduction to the casually brutal world of Sicario. In 201 5, the original shone a light on issues rife in the US. This unnerving follow-up, titled Sicario 2: Soldado, has done so again with a sequel that's every bit its predecessor's match. The movie promises to be this year’s most scintillating, pin-you-to-your-seat opening sequences (built around a suicide bombing scene that nails the chilling banality of modern terror) and only cranks things up from there. In fact, by the time the last bodies have fallen and the border country dust has cleared, the only thing really blotting this follow-up is a mildly frustrating ending. Sollima is great with building up. He becomes successful in creating some real tension. When you see your hero trapped in a situation, you are constantly feeling that mind-numbing blow in your heart, scanning tiny moves by the enemy. You are constantly rooting for him to escape a tight situation. If a director is able to create that thrilling nail-biting moment without giving away what’s going to happen, he has managed to rivet you in a trance. That’s what happens here. A suicide bombing in a Kansas City kills fifteen people and The United States government responds by authorizing CIA agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) to apply extreme measures to combat Me

xican drug cartels, who are suspected of smuggling the terrorists across the border. Graver and the DoD decide the best option is to instigate a war between the major cartels, and Graver recruits black operative Alejandro Gillick(Benicio del Toro) for the mission. Gillick assassinates a high-profile lawyer of the Matamoros cartel in Mexico City while Graver and his team kidnap Isabel Reyes, the daughter of the kingpin of their rival, in a false flag operation. Graver, Gillick, and their team take Isabel to Texas and stage a "rescue" with the DEA and local police to make her think she was kidnapped by her father's enemies. Gillick bonds with Isabel and the team makes plans to transport her back to Mexico, intending to leave her in territory controlled by her father's rivals in order to escalate the conflict. However, the Mexican police escort for their trip back across the border double-cross them and attack the American vehicles. Graver and his team kill dozens of Mexican policemen to escape the ambush. Isabel takes advantage of the ensuing chaos and flees the scene and Gillick goes after her alone. Meanwhile, the American government determines that at least two of the suicide bombers in Kansas were actually domestic terrorists, not foreign nationals and thus were not smuggled into the US by the cartels. In order to quell tensions with Mexico, the Secretary of Defense orders the CIA to abandon the mission and erase all proof of American involvement by having Isabel killed as part of the cover-up.

Graver orders Gillick to kill Isabel, but he refuses and goes rogue to keep her alive. Graver assembles his team to hunt them down in Mexico. Gillick and Isabel move to enter the United States disguised as illegal immigrants, as it would be illegal for the CIA to execute Isabel on American soil. Miguel, a young Mexican-American (who had made appearances throughout the movie), recognizes Gillick from a previous encounter in a parking lot in Texas and alerts his boss making Gillick and Isabel to be captured. Miguel is forced to execute Gillick and He shoots Gillick and they leave him for dead. Graver and his team track down the Mexican gang and Isabel with the help of a GPS transmitter inserted into her shoe, and kill all the gang members. Graver decides to bring Isabel back to the United States and put her in witness protection rather than following his orders. Meanwhile, Gillick wakes up finding the bullet went through his cheek, takes one of the gang members' cars and drives for the border; killing a couple of criminals after encountering them along the road. One year later, Gillick has recovered from his injuries. He locates Miguel and asks him if he wants to be a sicario.

Recipes WHOLE FRIED FISH IN TOMATO PEANUT BUTTER SAUCE

There is just something special about crispy whole fried fish that is soaked in a sauce. It is comfort food on another level. I love having my fried fish in a tomato peanut butter sauce. The sweetness and tanginess from the sauce is nicely soaked up by the marinated and fried fish.

-Ingredients

To boil the meat: 1 whole tilapia fish, cleaned and cut little slits on the surface on both sides 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste 1 tsp chili powder 1 /2 tsp turmeric powder Salt to taste 2 tbsp lemon juice 1 tbsp oil 1 large onion, chopped 1 tbsp tomato paste Coriander leaves, chopped 1 cup tomatoes, chopped 1 tbsp Nuteez Smooth Peanut Butter 1 cup water Oil, for deep frying

-Instructions

1 In a small bowl, mix together ginger-garlic paste, chili powder, turmeric, salt and lemon juice. 2 Rub the mixture into the slits of the fish and all over both sides of the fish. Set aside and let marinate for 1 0 minutes. 3 Deep fry for 8-1 0 minutes on each side until crispy, or to your liking. Set aside. 4 For the sauce, heat oil in a pan and add the onions. Cook until they turn translucent. 5 Add the tomato paste and coriander leaves and stir for 1 minute. Add the tomatoes and salt and cook for 5 minutes or until the tomatoes soften. 6 Finally add the peanut butter and water, stir and cook for 1 0 minutes. Add some more water if the sauce becomes too thick. 7 Place the fried fish in the pan and cover with the sauce. Let simmer for 2-3 minutes and then take it off the flame and serve with Ugali and some greens.

KENYAN STYLE GOAT PILAU

The best thing about this Kenyan Style Goat Pilau is the perfect marriage of the tender goat meat with the spiced rice. This dish is a burst of flavour and a whole meal in itself. This dish is known to be best cooked by the women of the Kenyan Coastal region, but it’s so simple to make and I’m sure this will be one of those recipes that will be made very often in your home.

-Ingredients

To boil the meat: 500 gms Goat meat, cut into pieces 1 tsp ginger, minced 1 tsp garlic, minced 1 tsp Blue Band Margarine Salt to taste For the rest of the dish: 1 tsp Blue Band Margarine 4 tbsp oil 1 tsp cumin seeds 4-5 cardamoms 4-5 cloves 6-8 black pepper corns 1 cinnamon stick 2 bay leaves 4 large onions, sliced 1 tbsp garlic, minced 1 tbsp ginger, minced 1 tsp green chillies, finely chopped 4 potatoes, cut into 2 inch cubes 1 tsp turmeric powder Salt to taste 1 1 /2 cups Rice, soaked in water for 30 minutes Coriander leaves, chopped

-Instructions 1.

In a pot, add the meat, ginger, garlic, margarine and salt. Add enough water to cover all the meat. Boil for 2-3 hours or pressure cook for 25 mins (5-6 whistles). If the water starts to reduce too much, add more to prevent it from going dry. 2. Once the meat is tender, use a sieve to separate the meat from the stock. Don't throw away the stock. 3. In a large pot, heat oil and margarine. Add the cumin seeds, cardamoms, cloves, cinnamon, bay leaves and black pepper corns and toss for 1 -2 minutes. 4. Add the onions and stir. Let these cook for 1 0 minutes or until golden brown. Make sure you let them cook this long and get them brown. It is also what gives the pilau it's colour and adds a whole different layer of flavour to the dish. 5. Add the ginger, garlic and green chillies and cook for 1 -2 minutes. 6. Add the potatoes, turmeric powder, boiled meat and salt and stir. Pour in 3 cups of the stock and boil for 1 5 minutes. 7. Add the rice and stir. Sprinkle some coriander leaves on top of the stock and let come to a boil. Once it comes to a boil, reduce the heat, cover the pot with a lid and let simmer for 1 8-20 minutes. 8. Serve with a side of Kachumbari.

I studied Graphic Design a few years ago, and my uni course was just 2 years, but boy, did I make the most of my time whilst I was there! Luckily, I met a great bunch of friends which I am still mates with today. Between us we would play many pranks and had loads of messy nights. The pranks started off quite tame. Our bedroom doors, in halls of residence used to be directly opposite, so we used to tie each door handle to one another, knock on both doors then run away. It’s surprising how much joy a piece of string can provide. We used to do silly things to annoy the security (because all they used to do was hassle us, knocking on our doors at night asking for people to go back to their own rooms). We used to draw funny characters of this one particular security guy, and you’d hear him on the door above running and grabbing these funny pictures we drew of him. If a fellow mate left their room open, we’d swap their belongings for another room – that one’s pretty harsh, especially if the other person isn’t in your friend group. I could go on and on... But I had this personal friendly vendetta, where my mate Paul alway s used to prank me and vice versa. I remember he loved his DVDs so I swapped every single one (he had around 300), so when he next wanted to spend his Sunday, hung-over watching his favourite movie, he couldn’t find it! Then he really got me. I had fairly short hair at the time, but not that short. And he thought thougt it was funny (it was looking back now), to shave a tiny amou nt of hair off the back of my head with a bic razor. The next day I went to uni and everyone was laughing at me, and I couldn’t work out why, because if I rubbed my hand over the back of my head I couldn’t feel it! Then someone told me, and I had no option but to shave my head to a 0! I looked ridiculous, plus I worked at the supermarket on the tills! That was it, one step too far, so I went to a high street cosme tic shop, and bought some laxatives. Now, this is harsh but what’s done is done...I waited for one Friday evening when we had a party, and poured a load of laxative into his barely watered down Vodka . I don’t know how he didn’t realise sooner, because the drink went a dark cloudy colour. Shortly after, all these girls came round, and it wasn’t long after that we were all in the living room listening to tunes and BAM, he literally shat himself. It was so funny. My stomach hurt so bad I laughed so much. Needless to say Paul did not get lucky with the ladies that night.
