Korsarz

By *Krezus (Czort pasb x Kreolka pasb) • Out of *Genua (Grand pasb x Gwara pasb)

The sire of Korsarz, *KREZUS, won the 1967 Polish Derby, hIs record: 4/21 (9-6-1)Derby+6. He was referred to in his day as “the Iron Horse.” As important as it is to have a classic sire, it is even more important to have a strong female family. Korsarz’s dam, GENUA, is the progenitrix of one of the top families in Arabian racing. Her sire GRAND 3/18(14-1-3)Criterium 2x+8, represents the magic combination of Kuhailan Abu Urkub with a French dam, in this case SAGAR 2/7(7-0-0)Derby, Oaks+2. (FORTA, who produced 17 winners, most of them being Stakes winners, was also by Kuhailan Abu Urkub and out of a French mare, PORTA.) Genua is close behind many of the most famous modern Arabian racehorses including Samsheik 5/32(14-7-5)4, SGR Vayu, Cassel’s Roszlem 13(6-3-0)1, Genuine Ruler, and Genuine Monarch, both Stakes winners. Genua is also the dam of FMR Grand Jubilee who produced FMR Grand Jete 1/5(3-1-0)1, the sire of many winners and stakes winners including Le Fromage, the winner of the Oct 12, 2008, ARC K--Cuch Jedan Stakes at Fresno. Le Fromage is still going strong and sound at age 10 and defeating French and top American horses consistently.

Our guest speaker at dinner was Peter Cameron, decorated judge, who attended with wife Velma. Peter entertained the audience with anecdotes from his past and some side-splitting descriptions of events from the show arena. Thanks Peter, you are a “great Canadian resource.” The 2009 Sport Horse Nationals will be held in Lexington, Kentucky at the horse park. This show offers Sport Horse In Hand & Under Saddle, Sport Horse Show Hack, Dressage, Hunter/Jumper, Hunter Hack and Carriage Driving. If you are looking to go, there are many shows in Ontario offering qualifying classes – Milestone Spring & Summer Arabian Shows, Zone 9, AHAEC Summer Sizzler, Ottawa Valley, Pickering Horse Centre. Let’s make a good presence at this show when it’s reasonably close. We still have two active zones – Zone 1 in the London area and Zone 9 in the Orono area with possible activity in Zone 4 (Grey/ Bruce). These areas promote the Arabian horse in smaller locales and need your support and input! Mary Burpee - In Memoriam

Mary Burpee with Ebony Angel, 2007 filly from Smokeyridge Nikita.

A great lover of Arabian horses, Mary Burpee (nee Kennedy), passed away in January 2008. Mary, who farmed with her husband Clarence in Hughenden, AB, was one of the early Arabian breeders in Canada. Her stallion Khem was the 241st Arabian registered in Canada. Mary loved the people-loving nature of Arabians, their beauty, stamina, intelligence, willingness to please, agility and spirit.

Although Mary had not been actively raising Arabs since Khem died in 1982, she continued to ride his daughter Gango Fantasy, and then his grandson, Gango Boldfire. Well into her eighties, Mary would often saddle up and go for a ride just for the joy of it. She took part in the twice annual 12-mile cattle drive from home to summer pasture for 55 years, with her last trip being just months before her death. In 2006 Mary purchased the mare Smokyridge Nikita (CAHR 0038346). Even though Nikita was in foal, Mary rode her when there was cattle work to do, and when Nikita’s filly was born, she took part in teaching her to lead. Mary Burpee was also an author, publishing her first book after her 80th birthday. Her love of horses, and Arabians in particular, is documented in her book Horses Around My Heart. It was followed by two novels in which horses played an important role. The second of the novels, Shades of Ebony, was delivered from the publisher just days after her death, but the family was delighted that she had been able to review and approve the proofs, and the cover.

Ontario Arabian Mares Win Dressage Awards for 2008

Final scores for the Ontario Cadora Silver Dressage awards have been tabulated for 2008 and two Arabian mares were named Champion and Reserve at Open Training Level against all breeds. MSU Legacysonkore+ (Huck’s Legacy x Onkore), owned by Miriam Adams Haslett and ridden by Shelley Higgins, was named Champion and Zaikalia (Amurath Baikal X Avondale Zaihab), owned and bred by Marie Gravel and ridden by Genevieve Lavigne, was named Reserve. Although the two mares did not compete against each other last season, (Legacysonkore competed in southern Ontario while Zaikalia showed the Ottawa circuit), both continue to promote the breed by excelling inside and outside of the dressage arena. Legacysonkore, who is also registered as a Sport Pony, finished her season at the Royal Winter Fair while Zaikalia showed on the line at the Tulip Arabian Show in June and was named Grand Champion mare. Hopefully both will continue on in their training and continue to advance through the dressage levels.

Arabian Racing on the Rise Again Courtesy Roxanne Rogers

Everyone is talking about racing these days and some big names are prepared to jump in so it’s time we got back on the track here in Alberta. At one time we had the second largest number of horses racing in North America but it fizzled out because the purses were too small – that is not the case now. Currently, Horse Racing Alberta (HRA) is being lobbied to officially recognize Arabians for racing so that we can expect the same purses as the Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses Photo courtesy Graustarkian Stud and furthermore and utmost, we will not take any purse money away from other breeds. I have spoken to quite a few people on the Board of Directors and a meeting can be arranged with Dr. David Reid (the head of HRA) when we have a solid proposal. I also have contacts in Europe who are willing to support us through sponsorship which could make it possible to have two good stakes races in the first season (a Derby and a Distaff). We are looking for about forty horses to be able to move forward. No racing dates can be obtained by us until the beginning of next year, so I am hoping that by alerting everyone now, we can get the support needed to go ahead. What we need the most at this time are letters of support from owners and trainers. Letters can be sent to Roxanne Rogers (address below) and should list the number of horses you are willing to put on the track. I have also spoken with Bob Allen, the owner of the new Lacombe track, and he is willing to have Arabian racing once we obtain status. Its always a good thing to have the track management behind us. If you have never been involved at the track before, HRA recommends using an experienced Quarter Horse or Thoroughbred track trainer. We are putting together a list of trainers who might be interested in training Arabians. There are so many reasons I could list to consider racing – it is a business, not a hobby and there is potential to make serious money. The horses love it and for owners, there is no bigger thrill than seeing your horse cross the finish line first. I sincerely hope that I will hear from many of you and once I have enough letters I have been assured that Arabians will finally be recognized as a racing breed in Alberta. Please contact me for further information and/or with your letters of support at: Roxanne Rogers, RR#1, New Norway, AB T0B 3L0 home 780-352-6413 • cell 780-362-1796 • email: roxannerogers13@gmail.com

A WAHO Conference Diary

By Marg Martin

Jan 23, 2009 Left Calgary (-30ºC), arriving in Muscat on the 24th at 11pm to a temperature of 27ºC. My childhood friend Kaye and her husband Rod were there to greet me at the airport, as well as an official WAHO greeter, I was surprised to find out. Rod is working on a project for Tethys Oil Ltd (Oman), and Kaye joined him there last year in September.

World Arabian Horse Organization Jan 30th - Feb 5th, 2009 Muscat, Oman

Jan 25, 2009 Kaye and I left for Sri Lanka, returning on the 29th. Temperature there was close to 40ºC; along with up to 85% humidity it was a shock to my system! But that is another story and adventure.

Jan 30, 2009 Rod thought we should take a drive out to the Al Bandar Hotel at Shangri-La’s Barr Jissah Resort, where the conference would be held. It was quite the drive from Muscat; one side of the road mountains, the other the Arabian Sea. The resort, a very large complex, was the color of sand so it blended in well with the mountains close by. A welcome desk was set up in the lobby with two young girls as our welcome to WAHO, but they were able to understand very little English. Finally someone came along and told us to go downstairs. It was nice to be able to

Jan 29, 2009 Arrived back in Muscat and was greeted by a full welcoming committee from WAHO and the Royal Court Affairs of the Sultanate of Oman. There were cameras and video cameras everywhere, most of the time face-to-face with you as you filled out the forms. Of course during this time there was trouble with my Visa since I had come and left again. It was a long wait – one of the young Omani men tried to calm me by saying that everything takes longer here, but all shall be well. Kaye was off in another area of the airport wondering what had happened. Over an hour later we are reunited and I’m off to Kaye’s home, which I use as a base (along with the conference hotel) during my time here.

Fort Rustaq

There were 420 participants and 58 countries represented. Each delegate gave a report regarding Arabian horse affairs in their country. I found this very interesting as the reports listed the number of Arabian mares and stallions, activities that their Arabians are used for, and how they are promoting their Arabians. At the top of most of the countries’ activities were racing and endurance riding. I had made friends with the Belize delegate, Christine Tupper, formerly from Mission, BC. Belize was the country with the smallest number of Arabians, only 22. Unfortunately Canada did not have a delegate but did have myself and another couple, Jim and Joyce Summers from Ayr, Ontario, attending. Major General Sultan Bin Mohammed Al-Na’amani, Secretary General of Royal Court Affairs, invited us to dinner at the Al-Bustan Hotel’s Majan Ballroom where music was performed by the Royal Guard of Oman. It was another great meal and gathering to end the day. This was a very elegant hotel as it had been a former palace.

equestrian skills were unbelievable with the movements and tricks they did at full speed and then some. At the end they came past at a dead gallop, undoing their cinches and taking their saddles off and waving them over their heads. I should add, everything was done at a flat-out speed – at times I am sure we had some runaways! The show closed with a record-breaking twenty-three beautiful grey Arabians pulling a coach. Music during the festival was by the Royal Guard of Oman. This was our first view of the Arabian horses in Oman so it was hard to leave for our next event. That evening we were off to the Al-Felay Fort Theatre for the Oman Folklore Show and music by the Senior Royal Band under the stars. We enjoyed dinner a short walk away under tents. I must say we had shrimp kabobs with the largest shrimp EVER. Christine said it was like eating lobster.

Feb 9, 2009 Our last day at Salalah before returning to Muscat. The first stop was Al Balid, the Frankincense Land Archaeological Park, an impressive early Islamic excavation site with a museum and botanical garden. The museum was a beautiful building of polished wood and marble. A traditional Dohow boat was on display showing beautiful carved wood. The next stop was at the old slave-trading port of Mirbat where thousands of Arabian horses were once exported to India, long ago. Carrying on to Samhuran, the former centre of the international frankincense trade, we viewed the ancient ruins of the Queen of Sheba’s palace. The last stop before our picnic lunch by the sea was Taqa, an Feb 6, 2009 Today’s post-conference tour started with a flight from ancient port and fishing village and then we were off to the airport Seeb Airport to Salalah. After a brief rest we were off to The Royal for flight to Muscat. Many goodbyes were exchanged along with Cavalry Stud Farm to view their horses, mostly French-bred and “see you again in two years!” racing stock. The best was left for last, a dark bay Russian stallion full of Arabian presence – Khallaboman, whose sire is Kubinec. Feb 10, 2009 At the Seeb airport leaving for home, I spotted During the showing we were treated to that lovely Omani coffee another blue WAHO bag, belonging to a gentleman from Bolivia and halwa, which is made from sugar, rose water, cardamom and and his 12-year-old daughter. So, more good-byes and see you in saffron. Riders came out in Native and English tack. Those with two years. We were told there were fifty Arabians there but I’m sure there were more. To see the riders come before us in a swirl of sand was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We were also treated to a show of horsemanship at break-neck speeds, including a roman rider with his horse running away. This was truly the Desert Horse in the Desert. Once it was over we were off to the Black Tents and a traditional Bedouin dinner. There was quite a wait to get our string of eight buses, police escorts and two ambulances ready for the trip back to hotel. At each roundabout the police had blocked off traffic and some had very long lines of cars backed up. I imagine the local traffic was glad to see the WAHO tours end.

With horses or without, Scottsdale

in February is a much-needed break for snow-bound Canadians. This year it seemed it couldn’t come fast enough. The snow followed our escape route, carpeting the landscape as far south as Flagstaff and highlighting the Grand Canyon in icy clarity as our plane flew over at dusk. Horses, trainers and grooms that arrived the week before the show ran into some miserable weather of their own – constant rain, chilly temps, flooded stalls and frosty mornings. Thankfully, as the show started, the sun came out and the Scottsdale we had been longing for welcomed us to West World for ten glorious horse-filled days.

Considering that Phoenix is one of the epicenters of the current recession the US is facing, and the fact that Scottsdale chose to forego Nationals qualifications for its halter classes, this year’s show was a spectacular success and a real testament to Scottsdale’s enduring popularity. There were over 2300 entries for the 54th annual running of the show. Numbers were down just a few hundred from last year’s record-breaking 2,560 entries. An extra day was added to the show to accommodate the new schedule, leaving most days with only morning and afternoon sessions. Evenings were free to take in barn parties, open houses and some of the local sights and flavors.

JUNIOR DIVISIONS The beginning of the show belonged to the junior riders and handlers. There were great rides throughout the qualifying rounds, and some well-deserved top honours in the Championships. Connely Driediger and Winning Afire collected a number of accolades, including Reserve Championships in PB Country JTR 14-17 and Show Hack 17 & Under. The duo also earned an impressive Top Ten in the PB Show Hack Open and in Country JOTR 14-17. Connely added one more Top Ten with C Sir Madre in the PB Hunter JOTR 14-17. With three entries, Leah McKinney-Lawrence had her work cut out for her. Among her many successful placings, she paired with the sturdy BSF Gunsmoke for a Top Ten in HA Reining JTR 14-17, and with Dos A Tango and PS Poison for Top Tens in PB Reining JTR 14-17 and PB Trail AOTR, respectively. Isobelle Ehret’s busy week saw her teamed with So Double Your Bet to take the Championship in HA Hunter JTR 14-17 and Top Ten in HA Hunter JOTR 14-17. Isobelle and the handsom black and white Kohlminer picked up a Top Ten in HA Country JTR 14-17 for owner Vanessa Parsons. Taking up the halter lead, she placed 2nd in PB Geldings 7 & Over JTH with brother Carson’s Monticello. Brandon Leubner and Mista Poco Mon put forth some great rides and earned Top Tens in HA Western JOTR 17 & Under and JTR 14-17. The youngest Luebner sibling, Khennedy, graduated out of walk/trot this year and piloted Weegotcha to a pair of Top Tens in HA Country JTR and JOTR 13 & Under, while middle sister Mackenzie trotted out of HA Country JOTR 14-17 with a Top Ten on the sparky bay mare CA Prom Queen. Cylent Ally++++//, owned by Donna Preston of Westbank BC, was ridden by Sierra Reyes to a 5th in HA Hunter JTR 14-17 and to a Top Ten in the Hunter Seat Eq 14-17 Championship. Island Elegance, owned by Donald James and Pat Simmonds of North Saanich, BC was shown by Jody Pringle to a Top Ten in PB Mares (4 & Over) JTH. And, in her first visit to Scottsdale, Abigaile Greendyk slid nicely into a Top Ten on her mare WCT Shimmr N Shyne in PB Reining JTR 14-17.

Top left: MONTICELLO and Carson Ehret Top right: Brandon Leubner riding MISTA POCO MON. Bottom left: Conley Driediger and WINNING AFIRE in Show Hack. Bottom right: Maegan Friesen showing FAMOSO WA in the Scottsdale Signature Stallion Auction Yearling Colts Championship.

The show, however, was not completely immune to the economic problems facing the country. Sales were reportedly down at both the Cedar Ridge Select Sale IV (high seller was SHF Encore for $239,000 US; The Color of Fame sold at $75,000US) and the Scottsdale Signature Stallion Auction, as might be expected. It seems, however, that when the spending slows down we can return to the old-fashioned joy of seeing plain ol’ really good horses. For many, two of the show’s highlights were seeing Magnum Psyche and Baske Afire in the show ring. Midwest Arabians’ Magnum Psyche and David Boggs were unanimous in the 8 Yrs & Older Stallions class, then waltzed away with the Senior Stallions and Scottsdale Supreme Championship; Strawberry Banks’ Baske Afire had the ring almost to himself as he claimed the Arabian Pleasure Driving Championship and a standing ovation from the crowd with trainer Brian Murch on the lines. Also on display were Sheila Varian’s latest purchase, Audacious PS, and 2007’s Scottsdale Supreme Champion, Aria Impresario, shown by Michael Byatt. In April, 1974, an article in the Canadian Arabian News touted the single Canadian entry to make it to Scottsdale that year – Patrick Newby and his grey gelding Sur Jorj+, of Sardis, BC. This year, just over 100 Canadian horses made the trip. Considering that we made up less than 5% of the horses at the show, every one of our horse and rider combinations deserve a huge round of congratulations for the results we’ve worked so hard to bring home! AS ALWAYS, FULL RESULTS ARE ON OUR WEBSITE: www.CanadianArabian.com > Show Results Leading the charge in the halter arena was Saskatchewan’s Ed and Laura Friesen of Wunderbar Arabians. With daughter Maegan handling in the amateur classes, the wins came early. Champion AAOTH. This was followed by a 2nd in PB Yearling Colts (Apr 16-July 31) AAOTH with Maegan’s colt Dorian WA (BHF Denali x Design By Class), and a Top Ten for Forever Famess WA (Sir Fames HBV x Bejewelled WA) in Yearling Fillies (Jan1 – Apr 15) AAOTH. For those of you who were wondering, the answer is no – he’s not just another pretty face! Friesens’ junior stallion Mariachi WA (Baske Afire x Brooklyn Bey) proved that he can excel not only in the halter arena (as he did in 2007), but also as a performance horse and successful sire. First on the cards with Joel Kiesner in PB Country Jr Horses (5 Yrs), he went on to take the Reserve Championship in the Jr Horse Final. An impressive group of Mariachi WA foals showed well in the yearling halter classes, earning numerous Top Tens, including Maegan Friesen’s El Mariachi WA (x Magnificent Lace), Daughtry (x RD Bey Lauren), owned and bred by Ashley David, Marianna ESA (x RD Shoshanna), owned and bred by Doug Amell & Heidi Keyzer, STLA Commotion (x London Folly), owned by Barrie Padgham, and RK Marilina (x Catalina Lady), owned by Ed & Laura Friesen. However, the highlight of the show for Wunderbar had to be with Famoso WA (Mariachi WA x Famess N Parys WA) in the Scottsdale Signature Stallion Auction Yearling Colts/Geldings AOTH Championship. In a class of 30 entries, Maegan and Famoso WA won Reserve, and a take-home prize of $25, 377.18 US. Just behind Wunderbar, Ernie Patterson of Grande Prairie, AB picked up 3rd

with a colt he purchased just prior to the class, SF Sir Real (Sir Fames HBV x Veronica GA), handled by Holly McDonald. Rae-Dawn Arabians’ Bey Ambition (Regal Actor JP x Bey Shahs Lady) hit the 3-Year-Old Colts class on a mission. With Claudinei Machado at the lead, the striking youngster went up against 18 competitors and earned an impressive 3rd behind Aria Impresario (who went on to be Reserve Champion overall) and WH Patriot. Owners Murray and Shirley Popplewell also enjoyed Top Ten honours with RD Solar Thyme (Pyro Thyme SA x TF Falconsimprint) in the Scottsdale Signature Stallion 2-Year-Old Geldings ATH with Murray on the lead. Not to be left out of the fun, Shirley Popplewell made her showring debut (in the Wendell no less) with the very pretty RD Sireena (Sir Fames HVB x Psyches Radiance), earning Top Ten in the Yearling Fillies (Jan 1-April 15) AAOTH. For someone who has been behind the scenes as a volunteer for many years, this was an exciting year for Sandra Arabsky of Sky’s The Limit Arabians. Sandra (who owns Sky’s the Limit along with business partner Herman Steunenberg), brought horses to the show for the first time and was thrilled to have her chance to show under the Arizona sun. Admittedly overwhelmed by anticipation, Sandra says one of the most thrilling moments was waiting outside the gates of the Wendell and having the announcer in the paddock call her name as “next into the ring.” “I can’t even tell you how it felt,” said Sandra. “You just want everything to go in slow motion so you don’t miss any of the experience of showing in Scottsdale.” Sandra handled STLA Shaya April 2009 25

Reserve Championship in the Signature Futurity, ridden by Liz Bentley, and Carrie’s Journey X (Odyssey SC x Marissa Bey) took Reserve in PB Hunter Jr Horse. Championship honours went home with Joanne Grossman and Cabarret (Toi Soldier x Santana Song) in HA Hunter AAOTR 55 & Over, along with a Top Ten in the AATR 40 & Over final. Joanne also won Top Ten in PB Hunter AAOTR 55 & Over aboard her new purebred, Psyches Stardust+ (Padrons Psyche x Starstruckk). Back in Canadian hands with new owner Wendy Obst, Allegacy WF++++// (Allionce x Miss USA) won what is sure to be the first of many Top Tens in HA Hunter AATR 40 & Over. Breeders Bev and Eldon Krause of Wetaskiwin, AB were thrilled to see the gelding “come home” to northern soil. So Double Your Bet+// (Soldat x Margarita Monday), owned and bred by the Ehret family, was Reserve Champion HA Hunter AAOTR 36-54 with Andrea Ehret and earned Top Ten in HA Hunter Open and 2nd in HA Hunter Geldings & Stallions with Todd Ehret. Also trotting out with Top Tens in hunter: Addicted To Love, owned and bred by Win Furman, ridden in HA Hunter Jr Horse by Todd Ehret, DH Tygercat, owned and ridden by Kayla Mills, EVG Julieus, owned by Barrie Padgham, ridden in the PB Hunter Open by Cheryl Fletcher, and O Lordy, owned and ridden by Laura Wolesley. You’d never guess they were a new team – Vanessa Parsons and Kohlminer (RA Hot Every Nite x Orriya) made nice work of their show ring debut. With grandfather Neil Duggan proudly watching from the rail (video camera in hand), Vanessa and Kohlminer got the judges attention with back-to-back Top Tens in the HA Country AATR 18-39 and AAOTR 18-35. 28 Canadian Arabian Horse News

This year saw Pinnacle Arabians return to the show ring with the Matoi son Matafax (x Beckys Legacy), placing Top Ten in PB Country AATR 40 & Over with Cindy High-Fischmann and 4th in PB Country Limit Horse with Denis Wigren. Top Ten honours in Country, English and Costume classes also belong to: CA Prom Queen, owned by Wanda Leubner, ridden by Ilka Ferguson, LBF WildCard+ and owner Kayla Mills, Heritage Bey Kat and owner Carol Dorin, Promiscuous, owned and ridden by Nicole Toren, and She’s Got Game, owned by Jodie Surerus, ridden by Tricia Urick. Both Strikes Sinbad, owned by Isobelle Ehret and ridden by Todd Ehret, and Promiscuous, owned by Nicole Toren and ridden by Wanda Leubner, went Top Ten in a very competitive HA Show Hack class. Nicole and her gelding also claimed Top Ten in the AATR, as did Kayla Mills and LBF WildCard+. The young stallion JF Verrisk (Versace x FS Risque), ridden by Tommy Garland for owner Barbara Lynn Hunt of Schomberg, ON, placed first in his Western Pleasure Jr Horses Stallions class and Top Ten in the PB Western Pleasure Jr Horse Championship. Other Top Tens in the Western Pleasure division went home with: Lode Em Up, owned and ridden by Katie Mostowich, Grace Under Fire GA, owned and ridden by Yvonne Metcalfe, and Hot Prissy Miss, ridden by Deb Storey in HA Western Jr. Horse for owners Liz Hagell and Neil Kirkwood. It seemed that people all over the grounds couldn’t get to the Reining and Working Cow Horse rings quick enough when they were running – these fast-action classes in Scottsdale are fantastic. Two of Kevin and Nadine Cusack’s entries paired with trainer Gord Hester to make the dirt fly. KC Rain N Fire (VLQ Friendly Fire

O

n February 26, 2008 a herd of more than 100 horses was seized by the Alberta SPCA from a ranch in north central Alberta.

At the time of the seizure several dead animals were discovered on the property; this included 27 horses.” – Rescue100.com In the April, 2008 issue of the Canadian Arabian News, an article was printed on the emergency rescue of a herd of horses from northern Alberta. The story had a unique if unfortunate resonance in the Arabian horse community – the horses involved were primarily of Arabian stock; the owners of the farm had at one time been accepted members of the Arabian horse breeders’ community. How could this have happened? Some people asked not, how could this have happened, but instead, what can we do to help. It was with that intent that Donna-Rae Coatta, Sysan Fyfe, and Pat Galloway got together to form the Rescue 100 Foundation. Donna-Rae Coatta remembers just how quickly everything moved. “Even though the horses had been seized on Feb. 26,” she explains, “the story wasn’t in the media until March 9th. Pat Galloway and I saw the article on Sunday morning in the Edmonton Sun, and we were on the telephone Monday morning talking to Susan. Monday night we went to an Aurora (Arabian Horse Club) meeting. Late Tuesday afternoon, we found out that Keno Hills had been approved by the SPCA as a suitable facility. And the first trailer load arrived at 11:00am Wednesday morning.” There were six trailer loads of horses altogether. “The first three trailer loads – we were thinking, well, these were bad, but we can work with this,” says Donna-Rae. “But by the last trailer load, we were warned that it was not a pretty sight. They had to make several stops on the way, and there were horses down in the trailer. There was this poor grey mare, she was shaking when she was unloaded. We put her in where it was warm, with some company. The next morning it was decided by the veterinarian that she would not make it (she was humanely euthanized). There were also three horses that expired at the feed lot (where the

horses were held before coming to Keno Hills). That made up the total of 100 horses, and we chose to stick with the number of 100 to honor the ones that did not make it as well.” The remaining herd, 96 horses, have thus far had a happy ending. All of them were successfully rehabilitated and placed in caring new homes. The majority were placed all over Alberta, with others finding homes in Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Utah. Over four hundred and fifty people volunteered to help with the rescue effort. Thousands more stepped forward to offer support. The last two geldings left for their new home just four short months later, on July 5th, 2008. Incidentally, none of the horses were placed with Rescue 100 Directors as their new owners, although a couple are boarded at facilities owned by directors. Nobody wanted to be accused of helping the horses for their own gain. “I think that we did the best possible for the horses,” says Donna-Rae. “There’s always times when you look back and think you could have done some things differently. But on the whole it’s really worked out well.” As stated on the Rescue 100 website, “It was not only the horses that benefited. We needed them too. Each one of the horses touched us, healed us and inspired us. They have demonstrated forgiveness, acceptance, love of life, hope, courage, peace, strength and beauty.” As for the court case, on December 17, 2008, Axel Hinz-Schleuter was fined $12,000 and prohibited from owning horses for life. He pleaded guilty in November to twelve charges under the Animal Protection Act. Dale Huber, who was charged with the same offences, was fined $6,000 and cannot own horses for 10 years. Rescue 100 volunteers believe that this is due at least in part to their appearances (complete with t-shirts and signs) at all the court proceedings. The foundation, now called the Rescue 100 Horses Foundation, is still fund-raising in anticipation of being ready should this situation ever happen again. They are working exclusively with the Alberta SPCA as a rescue shelter. Due to the economy, it was expected that they might receive horses needing care this winter, but as Donna-Rae says, “We were fortunate – the SPCA was watching a couple of herds, but we did not have any come in to us. That was amazing – what a wonderful feeling!” The foundation’s next fund raiser will be a Silent Auction held in conjunction with Horse Showcase 2009 in the Fultonvale Arena on May 24, 2009. All are welcome to attend and can check the Rescue 100 Facebook Group for more details. April 2009 31
