The Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Arabian Horse Registry was called to order at 12:07pm by Marcia Friesen. Executive present at the meeting were Marcia Friesen (President), Bill Lee (BC Director/Breeders Chair), Mike Steenhart (AB Director), Bob Sproule (AB Director/Treasurer), Tex Kam (Communications Chair) and Jill Barton (Ontario Director). Also attending were CAHR members Nicole Toren (Office/Exec. Editor of the Canadian Arabian News), Ed and Laura Friesen, Bob Wasylyk, Robert Sproule, Murray Popplewell, Terry Johnson and Deb Charnuski. Christina Weese, Managing Editor of the Canadian Arabian News, was also present. It was announced at this time that Marcia Friesen would be stepping down as President and that Tex Kam would be taking over the position as of January 1, 2009. (See New Business). The 2008 AGM minutes were presented for review. Marcia made note of the Board’s decision in 2008 to suspend Axel Hinz-Schleuter and Dale Huber from CAHR membership for life. Neither individual was present to appeal these suspensions. An amendment to the 2008 minutes was requested regarding the 2009 Western Canadian Breeders show. The show was originally awarded to the Calgary Arabian Horse Association (CAHA). However, CAHA stepped aside to allow the Aurora Arabian Horse Association (AAHA) to host the show due to the AAHA’s financial status. A motion was made by Mike Steenhart to accept the 2008 minutes as read, plus the amendment regarding the WCB show. It was seconded by Bob Wasylyk and the motion was carried.

Financial Report Registry income is similar to the previous year. Financial declines are due mainly to the decline in the number of registrations and transfers being submitted. Revenue from membership numbers and DNA kits was also down. In 2008, the News contributed to overall revenues, leaving the final numbers in a slightly positive position. The office has also made several changes and cuts to its operating budget and has managed to keep office costs static. A question arose regarding the nature of the condo units owned by the Registry. It was explained that they are adjoining units; one unit is rented out and the other serves as the Registry office. A motion was made by Bob Sproule to accept the Financial reports as presented. It was seconded by Laura Friesen and the motion was carried.

Registry statistics show 558 purebreds registered in 2008. Of those, 113 were U.S. transfers, 6 imported in-utero and 1 was a non-U.S. import registration. This is down from 2007’s total of 626 purebreds registered. In 2008 a total of 242 partbred Arabians were registered, also down from 2007 (285 partbreds registered). Thus far in 2009, we have 277 purebreds registered (slightly up from this time last year), and 120 partbreds registered (down from 143 at this time last year). CAHR Memberships were down as well, to 812 members in 2008, from 929 in 2007.

CAHR resumed membership with WAHO in 2007; therefore, we now process export documents for horses to overseas destinations. Twelve Arabians were exported in 2008.

A special on over-age registrations has been offered until the end of 2009, at which time it will be reviewed and possibly extended. Members can register purebreds over the age of two for $204.75 including gst and DNA testing, and partbreds over the age of two for $78.75 including gst.

Canadian Breeders Championships A discussion was held on the Top Six placings at the Canadian Breeders Championships. Previously, the rules stated that, in classes with less than 12 entries, only 50% of the class was to receive a Top 6 award. The rule will now specify that a full Top 6 will be awarded regardless of the number of entrants in the class. Quality of horses has been high in recent years, including Nationals and Scottsdale winners, however class numbers are down. This rule change is intended to encourage participation which is extremely necessary in the industry at present. The question was raised as to why Native Costume was not on the approved list of classes for Breeders’ shows. It was argued that the costume class epitomizes the breed, that it would be

2009 CAHR AGM Minutes continued... a draw for both spectators and competitors, and that it is technically something that all Arabians should be able to participate in. It was also noted that several (5) entries decided not to show at the ECB since without a costume class, they were reduced to one class to show in. It was agreed that it is important for the ECB and WCB shows to be able to attract participants by catering to the needs of the hosting area. A motion was made by Jill Barton that the selection of classes for Breeders shows will henceforth consist of the traditional mandatory classes, and that optional classes that may be chosen from any AHA approved class where the emphasis is on judging the horse. Because this is a Breeders’ Showcase, classes are not to be chosen where the emphasis is on the rider or handler (ie, equitation/showmanship classes). The motion was seconded by Terry Johnson and the motion carried.

Janet & Bud Oddy have said good-bye to their lovely Pure Polish mare Double Dare (pictured above). She & her son Double Exposure PW (below), by Matinee Bey, have come to live at Piney Wood Arabians. Judy Haynes, who purchased her first Arabian from Janet and Bud in 1972, says that she is absolutely thrilled, and would like to say thankyou to Janet and Bud for many years of friendship and ownership of these fine horses.

For the 2010 Breeders shows, the Zone 9 Club in Ontario has requested to host in the east; the BCIAHA has requested to host in the west. Both requests are being considered by the Breeders committee. It was noted that in the past, host clubs have been unclear about their responsibilities and requirements pertaining to the Breeders rules, CAHR and the Breeders’ Chair. A “Breeders Host Package” is in development to ensure clarity on this issue so that host clubs can meet all requirements and timelines. It was also decided that, in an effort to build the Breeders shows into premier events to showcase Canadian horses, a Breeders Management Committee will be set up. Murray Popplwell volunteered to head the committee with the assistance of Bob Wasylyk. The committee will look into ways to standardize and streamline the shows and to determine how the CAHR and host clubs should benefit jointly from the revenues. The resulting templates will take into consideration the differing needs of the ECB and WCB shows. The committee plans to bring recommendations to the board within two to three months. It was decided to discontinue the Futurity Program after 2010 due to lack of interest/support. The program will run in 2010 as entries have already been collected by the office. We may look at offering Jackpot classes in the future.

The new magazine is now 18 months into publication and has thus far consistently shown a profit. It has attracted a lot of positive attention and is widely viewed as a high-quality product by members, advertisers, and those in the publishing industry. In addition to printed issues, the magazine has its own website, a Facebook page and Twitter account and is available for free as an on-line flip-book. E-blasts are sent out regularly to keep members/ subscribers up to date. The News and its extensions are important communication tools for the Registry. It was noted that although most of the creation of the magazine is done by staff or by contract work, a great deal of time and materials are donated by Tex Kam, Christy Weese, Nicole Toren and some of our contributors. The revenue from the News (including revenue from the membership fee increase) has been used for promotional items such as the CAHR booth, banner stands, and event attendance. Promotion of Canadian horses is as important to the Registry as registrations, and is vital to maintaining the status of the breed in Canada. Positive revenues will continue to be considered for the funding of future projects/materials. A member asked about criteria for the selection of the covers of the News. Previously it had been decided that the January cover would be offered to the Canadian National Champion Stallion and, should the owner choose not to take the cover, it would be offered to another Canadian National winner. Several members made clear their disapproval of having a nonCanadian-owned horse featured on the cover of the main breeding issue. Cover selection has been critical to maintaining the quality of the magazine. Communications Director Tex Kam stressed the importance of making business decisions for the future of the magazine that will ensure its longevity. While acquiescing to the wishes of those at the meeting, Tex reiterated that, “For the record, I do not feel that limiting who can be on the cover is a wise choice for the magazine, if it is to be run as a business.” It was also stated that many U.S. owned horses have graced the cover of the magazine over its life span and that has certainly not had a detrimental impact on Canadians.

Canadian Arabian Horse News

New Business New Executive – As of January 1st, 2010, Tex Kam (Alberta) will take over from Marcia Friesen as CAHR President. Marcia will continue in the position of Past President. Ron Johnson steps down as Vice President and will be replaced by Hilda Markis (Quebec). Bob Sproule (Alberta) will remain as Treasurer. Committee Chairs will be chosen in January, 2010. Other News – Concerns over lethal genetic disorders such as Cerebellar Abiotrophy (CA) prompted discussions of mandatory testing for all breeding stock. This was decided against, taking into account that affordability would be a problem for many breeders. At this time CAHR will focus its efforts on education and encouraging members to test breeding stock. A publically accessible database will be developed on the website, where owners can voluntarily submit results for horses that have been tested for genetic disorders.

Barn News It’s official – Polar Pinatbians is moving to Winfield, AB. “It is just our little piece of heaven,” says Bob Williams. “I hope that all of you can come and visit with us some day and enjoy it like we will. We will officially be moved in the first week in November.”

– The Board decided that the executive will now have the power to suspend any member(s) whose horses are seized by the SPCA. Suspensions of this nature may be automatically served at the discretion of the board. – As a member of WAHO, the CAHR is given a Waho Trophy to award to an Arabian horse in Canada. There are standards set by WAHO as to which horse may qualify; however, individual selection is in the hands of each WAHO member registry. A committee will be set up to determine selection criteria for the CAHR. – Currently, the CAHR Rules state that a Permit to Transport Semen becomes void once a stallion is exported from Canada. In cases where the stallion does not change ownership and is only standing outside of Canada temporarily (less than one year), it was suggested that the permit may be re-instated for a reduced fee of $55.00. A motion to this effect was made by Bob Wasylyk and seconded by Laura Friesen. The motion carried. The motion to adjourn was made at 2:30 by Robert Sproule.

TouchWood Arabians is pleased with the success of TW Marshall in the actionpacked world of the cutting arena. Marshall (Eldans Wotan x TW Brittania) began his cutting career with three wins this year in three CCHA approved classes. It’s a great start, 3 for 3. In training with Neil McCleod from Thunderbird Horse Center, Marshall practises with both cattle and bison.

The 2009 Canadian National Championships

welcomed exhibitors and enthusiasts to Regina for the 52nd running of the Royal Red. With the forecast calling for record rainfall, 675 horses made their way through the gates at Evraz Place with their owners hoping not only for a chance at top honours, but also for the weatherman to be very, very wrong. Although it did end up cold and rainy for most of the week, we somehow avoided the biblical downpours that were predicted, and were treated to the usual warm atmosphere and great hospitality that this city always gives us when the show rolls into town. Despite being down in entries, most of the classes were still packed with quality horses and fantastic performances. Taking the most noticeable hit were some of the working divisions, with Jumpers and Working Hunters seeing a marked decline in numbers and disappointingly, there were no entries in the Working Cow and Cutting. The elimination of many of the cuts and sections, as well as cancelled classes, meant we were left with a considerably thinned 12 Canadian Arabian Horse News

out show schedule. That allowed for some classes traditionally run in Ring 2 to get Main Ring exposure this year. Water leakage in Ring Two also resulted in several classes being moved into main ring (to the delight of many a reiner) while crews struggled to dry out the footing. On a good note, spectator attendance was up this year, thanks in part to free admission and parking offered. And in the main arena, amid all the upgrading and remodeling going on, was the icing on the cake - a shiny new theatre-worthy big screen monitor. Spectators, exhibitors and (if they felt so inclined) the horses themselves could gaze up above the concourse atop the ingate and watch the action in centre ring.

Canadian Nationals Action...

The Belle of the Ball this year was British Columbia’s Island Elegance, who impressed a six-judge halter panel and claimed the title of 2009 Canadian National Champion Mare for owner and breeder Don James of Island Arabians. Her pedigree is

MARIACHI WA

IONA L S all-Canadian, sired by Wunderbar’s stallion Couturier and out of the GH Venture daughter Island Mist. It has been a particularly successful year for this fantastic mare, including a Reserve Championship at Scottsdale and her glorious win at Region 17 in the Mares ATH with Jody Pringle, making her the talk of the show at many stalls. Another Canadian-bred contender that’s been on the top of the ‘it List’ this year is Ed and Laura Friesen’s junior stallion, Mariachi WA. Eager to get in the ring, Mariachi was all business once he made his entrance and with Joel Kiesner in the irons, the pair cleaned house in PB Country Pleasure Junior Horse. The Championship was an exciting win for Saskatchewan’s Wunderbar Arabians. Our Canadian National Champion Stallion this year was show ring veteran Odyssey SC with Jerry Schall on the lead for owner Duke Mendel of Florida. Two Reserve Championships went to Canadians in other stallion classes; ER Invictus and owner/ breeder Janice Tokar of Airdrie, AB took Reserve in the Stallion ATH class, while Saskatchewan’s Rae-Dawn Arabians claimed Reserve in the Purebred Futurity Colts with Bey Ambition, handled by Claudinei

Machado. Rae-Dawn owners Murray and Shirley Popplewell had the chance to introduce their grandchildren to the excitement of the show this year, perhaps instilling the ‘horse show bug’ in the next generation. Is there a Champion walk/trot horse in-the-making in that herd somewhere? Top Ten honours went to Alberta stallion Cyty Heat in the very competitive PB Western Pleasure Open on the final Saturday of the show. The handsome dark bay was ridden to his title by Joe Reser for owner Bob Sproule of Salisbury Farms. OCTOBER 2009 13

As is appropriate for a first time win at Canadian Nationals, Sandra Daniel gave a great big hug to Courage Under Fire+/ when the pair was announced as this year’s Champions in the HA Western AATR 40 & Over. She had a flawless ride on the gelding and it was no surprise for those of us in the stands to see them ride off with the roses. When they hit the ring for their second class, you could tell the pressure was off. Sandra looked as relaxed as if they were on the trails at home in rural Alberta…until they called her up for their second Championship title of the show. That was fun to watch! Kohlminer, who is quickly developing his own fan club, had people sitting up and taking notice whether they were in the ring or not. Those watching the show via live feed at their stalls could be overheard saying, “take a look, Kohlminer just won another class.” It’s hard to mistake “B & W,” as he is affectionately known, and the judges had no problem singling him out as their clear winner. Unanimous Championships went to Kohlminer in the HA Show Hack AAOTR with owner Vanessa Parsons, in the Open with trainer Todd Ehret, as well as in the HA Country JTR 17 & Under with Isobelle Ehret. VLQ Friendly Fire was on fire for both of his riders in the purebred reining. Owner Allison Mostowich had competitors hot on her heels in the AAOTR 18-39 final, but this team was on the money 14 Canadian Arabian Horse News

and took the Championship by half a point with an impressive run. Trainer LaRae Fletcher-Powell rode the Alberta-bred gelding to a win in the Open. Other Canadian entries to make Top Ten in reining included Joelle Stasiewich and Neeranna, Sharon McLean and The Midnite Mist for Carol Cross and LaRae Fletcher-Powell on Katie Mostowich’s entry, Phoenix CA. Chance To Jam, owned by Ashley Toye and ridden by Cheryl Fletcher, were unanimous in HA Hunter Open and also took the championship in HA Side Saddle English. Ashley rode the gelding to a Reserve in Hunter AAOTR 18-39 and put in a repeat performance aboard her purebred entry, Cielo E, with a Reserve in Western Pleasure AAOTR 18-39. At the top of her game in several divisions, Leah McKinney had fantastic rides on all three of her entries. Teamed with half-Arabian gelding BSF Gunsmoke, they won Reining Seat Equitation JTR 14-17 and were Reserve in HA Reining AOTR. She also earned a Championship in the PB Trail AOTR on PS Poison and a Reserve with Dos A Tango in PB Reining JOTR 17 & Under. Trainer LaRae Fletcher-Powell piloted BSF Gunsmoke and PS Poison to Championship titles in HA Reining Open and PB Trail Open, respectively. One of the main contenders in the Jumping and Working Hunter division, Allan Ehrlick took home a record number of rose garlands

this year. Four Championships each were earned aboard DalApollo (PB Working Hunter Open, AAOTR, ATR and PB Hunter Hack Open) and R Jay Bakaro (HA Jumper ATR and HA Working Hunter Open, ATR, AAOTR). This is a record number of wins for an amateur at Nationals. Double National Championships were in the cards for Elaine Ward-Turcotte of St George, ON aboard her partbred mare, KF Almaz. The pair handily won both the HA Show Hack Open and the HA Sport Horse Under Saddle Open along with a Reserve in Dressage 3rd Level, Open. Elaine won an additional two Championships aboard partbred Gen Custer, in Dressage Fourth Level and Prix St. Georges. Also earning roses in the sporthorse division was Irresistible Grace and owner/breeder Lori Quinn of Surrey, BC, winning HA Sport Horse Under Saddle ATR and taking Reserve in the Open. Courage Under Fire+/ is a home-bred dream-come-true for owner Sandra Daniel. The pair took not one but two National Championships, in HA Western Pleasure AATR 40 & Over and AAOTR 40 & Over. This was “Curry’s” first time at Nationals; Sandra has competed at Nationals twice but not in the last 15 years. “Curry follows in the footsteps of some great Canadian performance horses,” says Sandra. She owned Curry’s granddam, Lady Michelle+/, and bred his dam, Bint Michelle+/. Lady Michelle+/ was the first Canadian horse to earn the newly established Legion of Supreme Honor award in 1984. Sandra competed with Lady Michelle+/ as a junior rider in the 1980’s and with Bint Michelle+/ in the 1990’s. Her first Regional Champion HA Western Pleasure AOTR wins were on both of these mares. Bint Michelle+/ is sired by Rahcountoro+++ (owned by Austin and Shirley Rowbotham), who was renowned for producing great Canadian half-Arabians. Curry’s sire is JM Mystairs Fire +//, owned by Linda Henry of Meadowlark Arabians in Lacombe, AB. He is a two-time National Champion Western Pleasure JTR winner and has numerous other National Top Tens. Curry was trained to his wins by Carla Jackson of Jackson Place, Sherwood Park, AB. Carla also trained Curry’s sire and dam. Sandra attributes much of her success to Carla’s training and support. “Curry is the dream come true,” says Sandra. “To have bred, owned and rode a National Champion... twice, our first time out – Curry has taught me to believe anything is possible and to never give up on THE dream.”
