Roxy’s meeting with the Queen is far from a drag

Continued from Front

Last year the 7ft drag queen (in high heels), otherwise known as Tony Race, and his partner Billy, went to dinner with a friend, Corrin Cassini, and her mum, Carey Knox. The conversation got around to “fantasy” dinner guests and people they’d like to meet, past and present. And Tony said he’d always wanted to meet The Queen (HRH)! Carey said she could possibly make that happen, because she was commentating at this year’s 55th British Driving Society Annual Show, held at the Guards Polo Club, in Windsor Park. She added: “If you’d like to attend as my assistant, you would, possibly, be able to meet the Queen!” Tony’s first thought was: “Carrying a radio and a clipboard is a ridiculously-small price to pay to meet the most famous woman in the world!” He added: “The show was outstanding in all categories of horse-drawn carriages. Corrin was competing

and won first place in her category.” At the end of the afternoon, the winners were invited to drive past the royal pavilion, and were then awarded their relevant prizes by her Majesty, with Carey introducing each one. After the presentation, The Queen spared a suitedand-booted Tony two minutes for a chat, and the delighted drag star said: “To be in the presence of HRH was astounding, but for her to ask me, in her beautiful, softly-spoken voice, if I had

‘enjoyed my day’, was a dream come true. “It was an opportunity I had to make the most of, and I had recently launched my artist website. So I thought it only fitting to give her Private Secretary a pencil portrait of the Queen, which I had drawn. “I do hope she will be happy with it, because it’s a day I will cherish forever!”

The sand, salt and petal carpets on Calle Grande THE making of carpets from flower petals, sand and salt, to celebrate Corpus Christi, has been part of Tenerife traditions for many years.

And in Adeje, the carpets along the Calle Grande and adjoining streets are made from coloured salt. Various associations and collectives take responsibility for a section of the carpet, with an overall design created by the Culture Department, which also supplies the salt and the design stencils. Among the groups taking part were the Focus international resident group and Ñandú Rugby Club, signifying the truly-inclusive nature of these kinds of Adeje events. The carpets were created last Saturday afternoon, on the eve of Corpus Christi, and walked upon after Sunday’s morning Mass. Adeje’s main streets were closed, from early afternoon on Saturday until after the Sunday event, to allow for the making of, and protection of, the carpets. But the public were able to view the colourful carpets, from about 5.30pm on Saturday, to see how they were made.

20% of Spain’s olive farms may vanish within 10 years MORE than 240,000 Spanish olive estates could vanish in the next 10 years, warns giant olive-oil company Deoleo, in an in-depth study.

It says that international competition, and stagnating prices, are making it difficult for smaller producers to retain their position in the market. The Salvemos el buen aceite (Save the good oil) study, researched Andalucia, Castilla La Mancha, Valencia, Aragon and Catalunya, and discovered that 320,000 acres of traditional, olive-tree farming had already been abandoned. Experts suggest the decline is down to 64 countries now producing olive oil, compared with 46 some 15 years ago. In fact, every second, 10 olive trees are being planted

SUMMER sales are gradually starting in high-street stores and boutiques across the country, beginning with the Greater Madrid region last Saturday, and spreading to other regions between now and 1st July.

Big names, typically, are the first to slash their prices: Spanish chain Mango and Swedish store H&M began in Madrid last weekend, and more sales are expected to be launched this week, elsewhere in the country. The Inditex chain of Zara, Bershka, Stradivarius, Massimo Dutti, Uterqüe, Pull&Bear, Oysho and Zara Home, as well as El Corte Inglés department store, begin their summer sale season tomorrow (Saturday). The OCU, leading national consumer organisation, has published a raft of recommendations to ensure shoppers are not blinded by low prices, which, from an average of 30% off at the beginning of the sales, can be reduced to as much as 80% by the end. Firstly, and most obviously, avoid impulse buys. Customers are advised to make a list of what they really need or want, before they set off. And here are the rules: firstly, set a budget and stick to it, take a walk and some time

somewhere on the planet! Meanwhile, almost 40% of the total quantity of olive oil comes from intensive farming, which yields almost 50% more than traditional farming, at half the cost. In recent weeks, prices of extra virgin olive oil in Spain have sat around €2.20 per kilogram, which is already below the profitability threshold, according to agricultural organisation COAG. The study’s prediction, if correct, means that it would affect 240,000 small farmers and almost 300,000 families in Spain. Traditional farmers are now being pressured to take the intensive route, producing higher volumes of lesser quality. But these methods are also bad news for the environment. Traditional olive orchards preserve land from desertification and absorb large volumes of carbon

dioxide, mainly thanks to the age and size of the trees. Intensive farming, in the main, uses younger and smaller trees, with less foliage and shorter roots. Juan Vilar, the study’s

author, said: “It is possible and necessary to reverse the situation. It takes the commitment of the sector’s agents to maintain a type of olive grove which has an important social, eco-

out before committing to a purchase, to enable you to consider the purchase in full. Secondly, retailers are obliged to comply with a series of legal requirements, and consumers should make

sure they do so. All goods in the sales must have their original price-tag displayed on them, so shoppers know how much they are saving. Nothing should change about the goods or the offers,

except the price. The same guarantees apply, which is a minimum of two years for electrical items, and the quality must not, in any way, be diminished. If something is of lesser quality, such as an item of clothing with a tear or a button missing, this should be clearly indicated. It is usually recommended that they be sold at an even lower price, since many shoppers do not mind buying something that needs sewing if it saves them money. But they still have the right to know that this is, in fact, what they are getting. Payment methods must remain the same. For example, shops cannot insist on cash-only purchases for sales items, when they would normally accept credit or debit cards at any other time of the year, or on goods sold at full price. If special conditions apply to sale items, or during sale season, such as payment methods or exchange and refund options, these must be clearly and visibly stated on signs, so that the consumer

For online sales, customers have up to 14 days to request returns and refunds, unless clearly stated otherwise at the point of sale. Typically, in physical shops, the “cooling-off” period is 30 days. Price comparisons should be made with identical or similar goods, especially mass-produced branded products, since these can often be found cheaper elsewhere. Whenever a customer feels his or her rights as a consumer, online or in a physical shop, have been breached, or the requirements outlined by the OCU have not been kept, they are recommended to file a complaint, using a form which must always be made available upon request. This is known as an hoja de reclamación. Where the complaint is valid, the consumer should not give up until a satisfactory and legal solution is provided, states the OCU. Retail jobs in Spain have now begun to multiply, ahead of the summer sales season. And this, along with the Christmas period and January sales, is when stores and boutiques make the majority of their annual profits. Under Spanish law, shops are allowed to hold sales periods at any time of the year, and whenever they want, although most stick to the original summer and winter seasons.

Four injured in home fire

Moped thieves simply couldn’t fool Guardia

FOUR people were injured after a fire broke out at their home in Santa Cruz, La Palma, on Tuesday afternoon.

It happened in their third-floor apartment, on Avenida El Puente, in the Los Nacientes area. One of the injured had to be transferred to La Palma’s General Hospital for emergency treatment, after sustaining severe facial burns. Local Police, along with the National Police, attended the scene to assist in the emergency.

TWO of the three youngsters, arrested by Guardia Civil for stealing eight or more mopeds, were minors.

The trio used a community garage, at the Guia de Isora home of one detainee, to store the mopeds, before breaking them down to rebuild other mopeds, or to sell the parts separately. All three, who live in Guia de Isora, were spotted by a local inhabitant. He later informed the Guardia Civil, who caught them as they were stealing two mopeds from a

Youngster, 8, chokes to death at San Juan fiesta

AN eight-year-old boy, to his family’s horror, choked to death at Gran Canaria’s San Juan celebrations, during a party in the early hours of last Sunday. The youngster had a choking fit while eating a hot dog, but, tragically, neither his parents, nor the emergency services, were able to keep him alive. He had been enjoying the fiesta with his parents and other family members, when the disaster occurred. Consequently, as a mark of respect,

two days of mourning were decreed by Telde Council. Parents are warned that the foods small children often choke on are dried fruits, sausages, sweets, carrots, apples and small fish bones. It is estimated that no more than four minutes should pass, while trying to clear the airways. But if the person choking is also coughing, he or she should be left to carry on because this is the body’s natural way of dislodging anything stuck. If the victim isn’t coughing, then abdominal thrusts, known as the Heimlich Procedure, should be carried out.

care/bike hire company. Guardia officers decided to visit the garage location, as well as inspect the area where the youngsters were spotted, and where they could possibly be found. When the officers arrived, they discovered that the three boys were each wearing a motorbike helmet, from the hire company. The officers then approached them, for identification purposes, as well as to question them. They asked where the trio had parked their mopeds and were told they were parked in a neighbouring street.

But when the officers found them and took a closer look, it was clear that the machines had been tampered with. The Guardia officers then took a closer look at the community garage, where they found the eight mopeds, along with other several parts. They were able to retrieve all eight models, which hadn’t been tampered with, along with several items from other mopeds. All eight have been returned to their rightful owners, while the three youngsters are awaiting a date for their court visit.

NEWS IN BRIEF Weekend drivers hit Men accused of tourist abuse

with a trio of injuries THREE people were hurt badly after being involved in Tenerife road-traffic accidents last weekend, in the Santa Cruz area of La Victoria, Puerto de la Cruz and Granadilla de Abona.

TWO men were arrested last Monday over an alleged sexual assault of a Finland tourist on the Costa del Sol, during the San Juan festival in Fuengirola.

The first to be reported was

in La Victoria, where a man suffered serious injuries after his vehicle left the road in Calle Chamizo, toppling some four metres. The emergency services were informed and the required services were dispatched to the scene rapidly. Medics assessed the driver’s condition and realised he had a severe head injury, so he was whisked off to the

The men, a Moroccan, 27, and a 24-year-old Indian, were accused of pinning her on the ground and touching her. The 20-year-old had been staying in Fuengirola for a few days, and had been enjoying the celebrations. But at around 6am yesterday, police were alerted by a witness, and nearby officers heard the woman scream. Fuengirola’s Local Police officers then held the pair, before the woman was taken to a health centre to be assessed.

University Hospital for further treatment. The fire-fighters were at the scene and took charge of recovering the vehicle from where it fell. Local Police were also in the vicinity to assist with the emergency The second incident occurred when a 63-year-old suffered various injuries in an accident on the TF-636, in Granadilla de Abona. He was taken to Hospiten Sur for treatment immediately, and Guardia Civil officers were on hand to help regulate the traffic. Then, in the early hours of Sunday, a 25-year-old man was injured after losing control of his car, causing it to turn on to its side at Calle el Pozo, in Puerto de la Cruz, As a result, the driver, who suffered injuries to his neck and back, was transferred to Bellevue Hospital for further treatment and observation.

Migrant boat with 15 minors A SMALL wooden vessel, carrying two adults and 15 minors, arrived on Tuesday afternoon at around 4.30, and sailed into Palm Mar’s el Punta de Rasca. Jose Luis Camison, Aronabased Red Cross Co-coordinator, said the boat had been at sea for around seven days, after leaving Dakhla, in Morocco. Once the boat was located, its occupants were checked over

PASSENGERS from the British airways flight, which took off from Tenerife for Gatwick last Sunday, were soon panicking when the plane performed a rapid about-turn. That’s because the cabin became smoke-filled and, alongside the flight crew, they were obligated to use oxygen masks. Initially, a passenger informed a staff member that he was having problems breathing, and it became clear that he was being deprived of oxygen, a symptom known as hypoxia. The BA flight pilot followed protocol and completed an immediate U-turn, back to Tenerife South Airport, from where all passengers were taken to nearby medical centres to be examined. Once the passengers and crew were checked over medically, they were all given the all-clear, and were ready to restart their journey home.

Scrapyard hit by blaze

A BLAZE, which broke out on Tuesday evening in a Guaza scrapyard for vehicles, near Camping Nauta, caused San Miguel firefighters to ensure the area was safe before tackling it. The fire-fighter team had the situation under control at around 9pm, and they watered the surrounding area to prevent the fire reoccurring. No one was hurt, and fire-fighter investigators are looking to determine the cause of the fire.

The Mexican five-peso coin and the Egyptian onepound coin are very similar to the two-Euro coin, and, on first look, the difference would probably go unnoticed. Driver’s truck carried Cyclist, 71, a mighty haul of drugs has a tumble

A DUTCH trucker was arrested outside Malaga, with drugs weighing more than 1,000kg, hidden within his cargo.

The 50-year-old driver was picked up while on route to the city on the A-357 motorway, after a National

Police surveillance operation. Sniffer dogs alerted officers to the truck’s trailer, in which they discovered the huge hashish haul, as well as 225kg of marijuana, in hollowed-out pallets. Investigators had learned that, every two months, a lorry from the suspect’s Dutch haulage company would meet with Moroccan

hashish smugglers in Andalucia’s Bajo Guadalhorce. In addition to the hidden drugs, destined for Holland, police also found nearly €3,000 in cash in the lorry. The arrest followed the launch of Operation Coffee, a European-wide operation against large-scale, international drug-trafficking.

A CYCLIST, aged 71, was injured after falling off his bike in Granadilla at around 11.15am on Tuesday.

The Canarian emergency services received a call, requesting an ambulance because the man had fallen badly, injuring himself in the Hermano Pedro Cave area. The operator dispatched an ambulance, and, upon arrival, it was clear to medics that he had injuries to his upper and lower limbs. He was taken to hospital for further treatment, along with close observation. A private company, working for the airport security, assisted the emergency services, and Guardia Civil officers were also at the scene to provide further help.

Taxing wedding for a bewildered couple YOUR wedding day is supposed to be the happiest day of your life, but it can be quite taxing, as a Spanish couple discovered.

Inspectors from the tax office suddenly descended on their reception as uninvited guests, demanding that they hand over the cash, set aside to pay for the meal. Too make matters worse, the debt owed had nothing to do with the couple themselves, but with the catering company, which was organising the nuptials in the city of Badajoz (Extremadura). The day had started well enough with a beautiful ceremony, and family and guests coming from as far afield as the UK and Madrid. But things were soon to take a turn for the worse for the unnamed couple, as their happiest day became the wedding from hell. One hundred guests had just sat down to enjoy the meal when the bride asked two of her cousins to accompany her to a private room, to help her adjust her bulky wedding dress. As she walked in, she was confronted by two men with a laptop computer. One showed her his ID and said, allegedly: “We’re from the Hacienda (tax office). We’ve come to embargo your wedding.” The groom was called, and the duo initially “played along”, thinking it was some kind of prank. But slowly it dawned on them that it was for real, and that is how their nightmare began. The couple thought, initially, that the inspectors were looking for “black money” payments, or were investigating the gifts, but they weren’t.

Guardia’s paws for thought

THE Guardia Civil, making use of social media, have posted an important message on their Twitter account, aimed at dog-owners, specifically.

In fact, the matter had nothing to do with the couple because the inspectors demanded that they hand over the money, set aside for the reception, because their catering company owed cash to the Hacienda. But even though the not-sohappy couple asked them to sort it out during the following week, the inspectors refused. Although the couple were obviously not to blame, their wedding celebrations were wrecked. By the time the bride and bridegroom had finished talking to the inspectors, the meal was finished, and they had missed their own wedding lunch. There was no Champagne toast and everyone missed out on the cake as well, because waiters refused to serve it as the couple were not present. “Well at least we can enjoy the dance,” thought the bride, but even that belief went out of the window, because she was called away from the dancing by two more unwelcome guests! Guardia Civil officers, called by the tax inspectors,

wanted to have a word, but at least they seemed more sympathetic and soon left. But by this time, the bride had just about had enough. Her new, shaken husband said: “You’re full of happiness and they put you in hell.” To make matters even worse, no one could get the airconditioning to work, leaving everyone sweltering, in 43-degree Celsius heat. The sound system for the video system was malfunctioning as well, so they couldn’t even view the film of the ceremony. The couple have now employed a lawyer to sue the tax office for “moral damages”. The bridegroom said: “I do not understand the aggressiveness of going to the wedding, talking to us, and calling the Guardia Civil. “They could have notified us, as they did later in writing and by email, that we should not pay the company. “They wanted us to make the payment directly to the Treasury as creditors, but we lost services, not to mention moral damages.”

The message states: “Our pets also struggle and suffer when we have heatwaves, so we are asking all dogowners to consider the heat when taking their dogs for a walk. “When the sun beats down for several hours, the floor

becomes very hot, and the pads under a dog’s paws are their shoes, in effect. They are very sensitive, and can burn easily if walking on hot ground. “There is a small test you can do to make sure the ground is safe for them. To check to see if your dogs can put up with the hot ground while walking, you should put your hand on the floor for five seconds, and, if it’s comfortable for you, then it’s comfortable for our pets. “If your hand can stand the five-second test then it’s allsystems-go. If not, wait until it becomes cooler.”

Five men arrested on nudist-beach charges

THE Guardia Civil have arrested five men for harassing a woman on a nudist beach in Valencia’s Cullera region.

The woman was heading for the car park when the men, aged 45-50, were alleged to have pestered her with insulting, sexual innuendos. They cornered her as she drew level with them

and began to abuse her, maintained the woman, but she reached the car park, seeking help from her partner. The five men then got into their own vehicle, manoeuvring abruptly, and, allegedly, attempting to run her down. The five were later identified, thanks to the description the woman gave the Guardia Civil, and four of them were found to have police records. All five are facing sexual-abuse charges.

Spain’s schoolteachers enjoy work, despite all the pupils’ distractions

Falling rubble halts cars THE Civil Protection Services posted a message on their Twitter account last Tuesday, about rubble falling from the rooftops in La Orotava’s Avenida Sor Soledad.

The group’s aim was to raise public awareness, because the falling rubble caused huge traffic jams in the area, from around 6pm. Fire-fighters, along with the Local Police, were soon in the vicinity, attempting to regain normality in the area. The fire-fighters began by making the rooftop safe, while the officers assisted in redirecting the traffic.

Watch out for these ‘gluten’ magdalenas

SPAIN’S Ministry of Health has issued a warning about several batches of magdalenas, which have been found to contain gluten and dairy, by mistake. Specifically, “gluten-free” versions of the Sol Natural and Mdalen brands contain gluten, which could set off allergic reactions for coeliac sufferers. The affected batches are the 145g and 70g packages, with the following serial numbers: ECO91024080 (expiration 06/25/2019) ECO91024051 (expiry date 06/29/2019) ECO91024032 (expiration 08/07/2019) ECO91024092 (expiration 14/07/2019) ECO91025060 (expiration 20/07/2019) ECO91025031 (expiration date 29/07/2019)

ECO91025002 (expiration 05/08/2019) ECO91025072 (expiration 12/08/2019) ECO91026030 (expiration 18/08/2019) There is also an alert regarding the 190g Diet Radisson maizebased magdalenas. The affected lot is 260120, with a 26/01/20 consumption date. In this case, the labelling does not reflect the presence of milk, which means that its consumption can be harmful for people allergic or intolerant to dairy. The product with this defect has been manufactured in the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León. It has been distributed by a Catalunya company to establishments in CastillaLa Mancha, Valencia, Asturias, Castilla y León, Andalucia, Basque Country, Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Madrid, Murcia and Galicia, as well as to Portugal outlets.

NINE in 10 schoolteachers in Spain are happy in their chosen profession and say they have a good relationship with their pupils. That’s according to the TALIS International Teaching and Learning Study, released recently by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). This organisation, which covers all the world’s developed countries, as well as a handful of its emerging economies, reveals that 90% of primaryschool teachers, and 85.6% of those in secondary schools, would choose their profession if they had their time again. And 90% believe that compulsory education allows them to influence children’s development, offering a positive contribution to society. But the report also reveals that “class interruptions”, such as children talking, misbehaving or being a bit rowdy, occur more often in Spanish schools than in the OECD average. Some 45.1% of Spain’s teachers admit they have to waste a lot of time, getting children to behave and focus, compared with a typical 28.7% in the rest of the developed world. The percentage rises to 31.3% for the European Union as a whole, and Brazil is the only country where child classdisruption time exceeds that of Spain. As for how easy, or otherwise, teachers find classes to control, the volume of experience appears to be a huge contributing factor: 82% of those who have been in the profession a long time say they feel capable of restoring order in the classroom, compared with 66% of new or relatively new teachers. Alejandro Tiana, Secretary of State for Education in Spain, and Marta Encinas-Martín, head of Education and Competence for the OECD, both say the discipline issue is more a matter of training, rather than children’s behavioural problems, in general. However, just 35% of teachers believe they have the knowledge and skills to keep classes under control, compared with 53% of the OECD, with those who do not, yet manage it anyway, with relative ease, saying they have learnt to do so “on the hoof” and through experience. And only four in 10 teachers feel they have been given sufficient training to handle rowdy classes, compared

with 72% across the OECD as a whole. Ms Encinas-Martín says the issue of how to handle disruptive classes increases in those schools with “a more complex structure”, such as those with a high number of immigrants, or children with specific learning needs. In other OECD countries, she says, teachers with the most experience will normally be put in charge of classes with a diverse range of abilities, origins, backgrounds and personalities, although this is less the case in Spain. Her verdict is that Spain’s teachers need more training in techniques and procedures, for helping with the integration of refugee pupils, foreign pupils and those with special learning needs. But that definition covers the full scale, from those with an exceptionally-high IQ to those with severe development disabilities. Spain has one of the most multi-cultural school communities on earth, while 17% of teachers in the OECD work in centres where at least one in 10 pupils has a different native language from that of the classroom. This figure rises to 22% in Spain, and 26% of teachers work in schools where at least one in 10 children is a foreigner. In practice, as many expats with children, or who have been children in a foreign system, will testify, linguistic and cultural integration in primary schools, in particular, tends to be fairly swift. Parents report that their children end up being completely bilingual or trilingual in less than a year of starting school in a foreign country. But the language aspect can be more challenging if the child does not begin his or her education abroad until high school. Even then, success stories are numerous, and foreign families recognise that in doing so, their children have been granted an excellent opportunity to become fully immersed in two cultures, and to reach adulthood with, effectively, at least two native languages. But some schools in Spain offer more support than others to children who speak a different language. And those in much more cosmopolitan areas, usually by default, offer intense, remedial Spanishlanguage classes, a facility which has been increasing and improving dramatically

over the past decade or so. Teachers in Spain, however, do complain about lack of resources, lower pay than their international counterparts, and lack of incentives. But these are issues that the socialist government, which has been in power for a year, and many regional governments, particularly in Valencia, are focusing heavily on resolving. In the Valencia region, for example, investment in schools, facilities, material and teaching staff has increased considerably in the past three years. That’s because the regional education authorities decided to outsource spending in this area to local councils, and decentralising the process of building new schools and renovating existing ones, limiting itself to handing out the funds. Marta Encinas-Martín recalls that Spain has one of the highest rates of pupils leaving at 16. Early-leaving percentages have, however, gone down considerably in the past decade, through the financial crisis which broke out at the end of 2008. More pupils opted to continue with their education, because of the scarcity of jobs and apprenticeships. Spain’s teachers in Spain say they receive less training on discipline and special learning needs because of a “lack of incentives and a lack of relevant courses they can take up”. Despite their overwhelming love of the job, teachers do not feel valued by society in general, as a profession: just 12% of primary teachers do, and 14% of secondary teachers. Overall, they want to be offered more and better-quality training in non-academic issues, such as child behaviour and class control, and, also, on special educational needs, and higher salaries, and for class groups to shrink. Spain’s class sizes are “slightly higher” than the average for the OECD, although some regional governments have pledged to increase funding, so that groups never go beyond a maximum of 20 to 25 pupils, compared with 30-orso, as they have been in past years. Ms Encinas-Martín believes class sizes remain a little larger than they should be, because education authorities have focused their concerns more on other aspects of teaching and learning.

Brazilian sergeant smuggled drugs on President’s convoy

A BRAZILIAN Airforce sergeant was arrested on Wednesday for, allegedly, trying to smuggle cocaine aboard the military convoy of President Jair Bolsonaro. He was found carrying 39kg of the Class A drug at Sevilla airport, after hiding the narcotics inside an Embraer 190 aircraft. It was being used by the Brazilian Air Force to transport military personnel, who were accompanying Bolsonaro on his trip to Japan. The

plane, an emergency backup for the Brazilian leader, was flying from Brasilia and stopped on the way at Seville Airport, where the sergeant was arrested. Investigators believe the cocaine’s final destination was Spain, and that the sergeant, and, probably, other soldiers from his unit, were bribed to accept the batch on the official plane. Bolsonaro and his closest advisers, travelling to Osaka on an Airbus 319, had stopped over in Lisbon. The controversial leader, who, famously, labelled himself a proud homophobe,

said on Twitter that he would collaborate fully with Spanish police. The suspect, who does not have diplomatic immunity, was being held by the Guardia Civil in the Andalucian capital, and faced a judge yesterday (Thursday). The embarrassing event occurred after Bolsonaro had vowed to clamp down on drugs in Brazil. He promised to increase the military’s drug-war role by giving security forces more power to shoot and kill armed criminals. And he is making it easier for everyday citizens to buy guns!

Football coach said to have abused at least 25 children

A MALAGA football coach, understood to have abused at least 25 children in his care, is facing a whole-oflife sentence behind bars. The coach, known only as J.C.C.F., was actually looking at a 100-year sentence as his trial resumed last Monday, behind closed doors to protect the alleged victims, after one of the leading magistrates had fallen ill. The court heard statements from two children, who had reported the coach in 2016. Sources have indicated that the remaining court dates were scheduled for three days this week, and three in early July. The 44-year-old coach, who is married and has children, will remain in Alhaurin de la

Torre prison throughout the trial. Prosecutors allege that the man took advantage of his coaching status and popularity with the minors he trained, winning their trust before abusing at least one of the victims, physically, on several occasions. He propositioned at least two dozen others, sexually, either in person or over WhatsApp, allege prosecutors, while asking them to send him intimate photos. The accused is a Level III coach, which enables him to coach at national or international level. He has coached, among other teams, Victoriana Olympic, Puerto Malagueño, Rincon de la Victoria and even Malaga FC, where he was employed from 2012 to 2014. Since October 2016, he had been coaching at Alhaurin de la Torre FC.

Grown-up kids, who lived with dead wardrobe mum

THE grown-up son and daughter of an elderly woman, whose was discovered, sealed in a wardrobe, could have been living with the corpse for two years.

In a statement to a judge, the son confessed to smothering his mother, then collecting her pension. Police are awaiting forensic reports, but they say neighbours in the tiny village of Pozondon in the Teruel province of Aragon, population just 45, had not seen the old lady for two years. Local Council officers had reported their worries about the elderly woman’s wellbeing to social services two months ago, after villagers realised they had

not seen her for some time. The deceased, who had reduced mobility, lived at home with her two unmarried children. And newly-elected Mayor Mario Cáceres said the woman was rarely seen out and about because of her condition. But her absence became noticeable after a while, and her children seemed to give evasive answers when asked about her. As a result, Pozondon Council notified Social Services in the Sierra de Albarracín region, which, in turn, called the Guardia Civil. Officers, who searched their home and found the body in a sealed wardrobe, were aware that she had been dead for many months. The two children have been arrested and are under investigation for possible murder, as well as socialsecurity fraud.

Irishman’s fatal stabbing, by coward’s broken-bottle

The scene of the early-morning tragedy in Fuengirola

A BRITISH expat has been arrested for the murder of an Irish tourist in a Costa del Sol pub, after, allegedly, stabbing his 53-year-old victim with a broken bottle.

The deceased, a father-oftwo, is believed to have been attacked in the men’s toilets of Pogs Old Irish Rock Pub in Fuengirola, according to the MailOnline. The killer, a man aged 49, who lives in Mijas, is thought

to have been pestering the Irishman and his partner before the incident, at 1.50am last Friday, said observers. One claimed that the Irishman was using a urinal, when he was stabbed in the neck from behind by the coward, with a broken bottle. Witnesses added that he collapsed in a pool of blood, as the alleged killer was stopped by bouncers when he tried to flee. A source told the MailOnline: “The attacker showed no signs of emotion, either immediately after his arrest or

once he was in police cells.” The attacker carried two broken bottles, according to police, before wounding his victim several times, especially in the neck. A National Police spokesperson said the man “had taken interest in several women inside the pub”, and was reported to have pestered them. He added: “Officers have arrested a 49-year-old British man in Malaga in the early hours of this morning, over his suspected involvement in the death of an Irishman, aged 53, at a pub in the town.”

British Ambassador Manley bowing out on a Royal high! MORE than 700 people celebrated the strong links that unite the UK and Spain last Thursday, at The Queen’s Birthday Party in Madrid.

The Royal occasion was held to acknowledge Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s 93rd birthday, who in 2019 also celebrates 67 years as sovereign. It took place in the British Ambassador’s official residence in Madrid, under the banner of “Creating Our Future”, and brought together personalities from the worlds of politics, business and society. These included the Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Pedro Duque; the Secretary of State for Tourism, Isabel Maria Oliver, and the Congressional spokesperson for Ciudadanos, Inés Arrimada, along with Banco Santander Vice-President Matías Rodríguez-Inciarte. It was also a special occasion for Spain’s British Ambassador, Simon Manley, who will be standing down from his role in August, having completed his sixyear service in the country. And Simon underlined the excellent ties between both countries, calling for the continuation of this special relationship in the future. “We have shared challenges such as climate change, the ageing population, Islamist terrorism and the digital revolution,” he said. “Inside or outside the European Union, we have to tackle them together.” Spain and the UK have trade flows of more than €62,000m per year. More than 300,000 UK nationals live in Spain and nearly 200,000 Spaniards live, study and work in the UK. Academic ties, along with the collaboration between security forces in the fight

against drug-trafficking and terrorism are also very strong. This was also the last Queen’s Birthday Party in Madrid for Simon, who will pass the baton to his successor, Ambassador Hugh Elliott, who has been Director of Communications in the Government’s Department for Exiting the EU, and the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. “I am grateful to the Spanish people for their collaboration and help, and I confess that this has been the best job of my life,” added Simon. The video summary of the party is available on YouTube and the photos can be downloaded from Flickr.

Using the hashtag #QBPMadrid2019 on Twitter and Instagram, you can see everything related to the party. The Embassy has just launched its official Instagram channel @ukinspain. *The party’s sponsors are British and Spanish businesses: BP Oil Spain, BT Global Services, Ferrovial, HSBC, Iberdrola, Intu Eurofund, JCB, King’s Group, KPMG, NatWest Markets, Sanitas and Santander Bank. *Every year, The Queen celebrates two birthdays: the day of her actual birth, which is 21st April, and her “official” birthday, on the second Saturday in June, this year the 8th. *The UK and Spain have had diplomatic ties for more than 500 years, since Catherine of Aragon married Henry VIII. *This year, The Queen became a great grandmother for the eighth time with the birth of Archie, son of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Summer-camp kids stricken with a bug AT least 20 children, aged between 10 and 12, have been taken ill after spending the night at a “summer camp”.

The youngsters, from San Antonio Abad school in Son Ferriol, attended the Hipocampo camp in Calas de Mallorca last Wednesday. When they returned to Palma the following afternoon, some children were, reportedly, feeling dizzy. And the alarm went off on Friday morning, when several children, who began suffering from vomiting and headaches, were taken to a nearby clinic for treatment. Local authority sources have not yet given an exact number for the children

affected, because several of them did not go to school, having felt unwell overnight. And at least two teachers have also been affected. Health Department experts have been to the camp to try to trace the source of the poisoning. Parents of children at San Antonio Abad School, and in a nearby clinic, attributed the poisoning to the food eaten at the camp. One pupil said: “It was not edible. They gave us meatballs with mashed potatoes and they looked like ice cubes. The water, which had a very strong taste, looked like a tap water.” So far, symptoms have been relatively mild, with none of the youngsters being hospitalised. But parents have demanded a full explanation.

ANYONE signing for a new mortgage since last Monday will have noticed a dramatic change in processes, now that legislation has introduced a complete overhaul of the home-loan system.

It covers who pays what, how applications are approved, and what the lend can and cannot do. A European Union directive means that practices across the EU are now streamlined, meaning fewer nasty shocks for those seeking to buy new homes in a nation that is not their own. Spain has exceeded the deadline for incorporating the directive into national law by three years, leading to EU threats of daily fines of €100,000. But because all EU countries have now complied with their obligations, borrowing money to purchase a property abroad should involve a relatively familiar system to customers. The major overhaul has made borrowing and home ownership safer and more thorough, and has also seen costs come down. Until now, in Spain, the sum of a mortgage loan agreed would be based entirely on either the bank’s survey value of the property, or its market value, or a combination of both, normally with between 60% and 80% of the lower of these two being the maximum offered. Pre-financial crisis, the survey value was the main factor, with affordability for the owner being secondary, or even not considered in some cases. That meant widespread negative equity, when artificially-inflated

Mortgage-law reform makes it much easier for borrowers today

prices suddenly plummeted. Also, customers with limited financial knowledge often discovered that they were genuinely not aware of what they were buying. But this new law changes all that. The lender is required to carry out an exhaustive evaluation of the applicant’s solvency, including his or her work situation, current income, assets if any, savings, and regular expenses. Other financial commitments are also taken into account, such as car finance or personal loans, plus any other likely outgoings, which could

Person hurt in gas blast

A GAS explosion on the Costa del Sol, in Mijas Costa, sent the unidentified occupant of a home to a local hospital for treatment on Wednesday afternoon. The emergency services were alerted at 2.45, and the Mijas Fire Department soon arrived. Doors, windows and furniture were all damaged at the property, in Calle Virgen de la Paz. Fire sources indicated that a leaking pipe, attached to a gas cylinder, enabled gas to build up in the house, before the blast.

crop up during the mortgage term. It means that if the loan term is likely to extend beyond retirement, the buyer’s likely pension income will be taken into account. Irrespective of the sale price, market value, survey value or predicted fluctuations in any of these, a bank is permitted, only, to grant a mortgage if its evaluation indicates that the borrower will be able to make the payments. Where a mortgage loan is denied, the law states that the bank is required to give written explanations “without delay”. All advertising for mortgages must clearly indicate the rate of interest applied, expenses involved, the sum of monthly payments, the total sum which the customer will have paid by the end of the term, and whether or not the borrower is required to take out insurance. Banks can make it compulsory to take out life insurance, buildings insurance or both, as a mortgage condition, but are not permitted to force customers to purchase their own insurance products. As long as these provide

the cover required, they can be taken out through any provider chosen by the borrower. All details of products offered by the bank itself must be explained, until the lender is satisfied that the customer understands, fully, the terms and conditions, and is in a position to make an informed choice. Lenders are permitted to sell combined packages of mortgages with other products, such as deposit accounts, credit cards or pension plans, attracting a discount on mortgage repayment interest. But “hard-sell” practices are not permitted and exhaustive explanations are required. Borrowers will now make two visits to the notary, rather than one. The final visit, for signing documents and handing over deeds to the property, has always been necessary, but a new, earlier visit to give the customer full and free advice is a requirement of the contract. The home-buyer can attend the notary of his or her choice, and will be given a complete explanation of the purchasing and mortgage process and all

details of the loan, including a full breakdown of contract terms, and be given help and answers to questions. Afterwards, the customer will be given a small test to check his or her understanding. For this, the tab is picked up by the bank, since it is in the lender’s best interest to ensure the customer is fully aware of what he or she is getting into. During the final notary visit, as well as during the first, the consumer is able to ask for any issues or queries to be clarified, before signing the contract. Good news for those buying their own property is that interest rates have remained relatively stable, and extremely low in the Eurozone for several years, and there are no medium-term plans for any sharp increase. Spain’s new mortgage law is, largely, a response to the repossession crisis, which was particularly severe in 2012. That was one of the worst recession years, which, eventually, led to certain banks and even entire towns declaring themselves “repossession-free zones”. Some banks would send repossession notices after just one or two missed payments, but others, recognising that taking a person’s house from them leaves nobody a winner, opted to exhaust every possible solution through negotiations with the owner: payment holidays, to cover periods of unemployment; interestonly payments; capped payments; extended terms, and so on. All banks in Spain are morally obliged, through the new Code of Good Practice, to negotiate first. But this new mortgage law, now active, means the customer has a long stay of grace before repossession proceedings can even start.

Solar-panel systems are red hot in Spain

THE sun has been shining on Spain’s self-produced energy sector, since new regulations were approved in April by the Government.

Since then, demand for photovoltaic solar panels by homes and businesses has soared. And, though it is still early, the Spanish Photovoltaic Union (UNEF) is already talking about “an enormous, renewed interest” in solar energy selfgeneration. Last year, 235 megawatts (MW) of new photovoltaic power were added in Spain, and the industry expects to see an installed capacity of 400 MW this year, says UNEF Director General José Donoso. Most of this extra power is being demanded by small and medium businesses, and by the industrial sector, which stand to benefit the most because they can produce

and consume energy, simultaneously. For now, households which, typically, have 3kW solar power systems, represent around 10% of self-generation from the sun. But Donoso is expecting that figure to rise throughout the year. Now that self-generation is legal and makes economic sense, companies are working round the clock to

meet the demand. Gone are the administrative hurdles kept in place for years by the right-wing Popular Party (PP) administrations. And the price of installing solar systems has dropped by nearly 80% in a decade. Even some local authorities are incentivising self-production, with lower property taxes for homes with solar systems. A spokesperson for the

renewable energy company Holaluz said they were being contacted by 300 clients a week, requesting a quote, and that they were setting up five systems a day. The company expects to have installed 1,500 systems by the end of the year, and 5,000 by 2021. These are mostly home systems for stand-alone houses and other installations, which do

not send excess production back into the grid. In 2017, the company set up the first shared selfproduction system, which is also legal since April, in a Barcelona residential building in Rubí. Even traditional utilities like Iberdrola and Endesa are vying for a slice of this ebullient new market. And requests for photovoltaic installations have soared 140% at a company named SotySolar. “We’ve gone from being two workers, a year-anda-half ago, to a team of 11, and we’re still short on people,” said José Antonio González, sales director for Red-Fotovoltaica, the company producing turnkey installations for Leroy Merlin clients. “We’re having trouble keeping up with demand.” Experts are convinced that, in a short while, apartments will not just have energyproducing panels, but also storage batteries, which provide the greatest energy savings.

IT is no secret that dogs love to sniff around. Take them for a walk, and, chances are, they’ll spend most of their time sniffing about, taking in as much of the world around them as possible.

The canine sense of smell has, actually, long been a potent tool used by humans, be it in police operations, forensic investigations, and even detecting pests such as bed bugs. With anything between 200300 million sense receptors in a dog’s nose, against a paltry five million in human noses, man’s best friend is highly sensitive to the odours we have no ability to perceive. Dogs have even proven their effectiveness at detecting human health conditions, such as migraine headaches. And now, a new study proves the theory that dogs can use their highly-evolved sense of smell to detect blood samples from people with cancer, at a spectacularlyprecise rate of 97% accuracy. The discovery could revolutionise the way in which researchers have sought new methods to detect cancer, which has ranged from artificial intelligence to breathalyser tests.

Dogs can sniff out bed bugs, and even cancer in humans!

BioScentDx, a Florida-based company, has presented its study of canine cancerdetection at Experimental Biology, a life sciences and medical research conference. Lead researcher Heather Junqueira, of BioScentDx said in a press statement: “Although there is currently no cure for cancer, early detection offers the best hope of survival. A highly-sensitive test

for detecting cancer could, potentially, save thousands of lives and change the way the disease is treated.” And, reflecting on their presentation, the research team said: “Canines are able to differentiate between serum samples taken from cancer patients, and samples taken from normal controls. “This study further supports the use of dogs as biomedi-

cal research tools for detection of cancer biomarkers. In particular, this study was designed to determine the accuracy of canines’ ability to detect, by scent alone, lung cancer biomarkers in blood serum.” During the study, the scientists utilised a behavioural technique known as “clicker training”, to instruct four beagles to tell the difference between blood serum belong-

ing to healthy people, and samples taken from people with malignant lung cancer. While one of the participating beagles, Snuggles, was “unmotivated to perform during training”, the other three beagles reached an average accuracy rate of 96.7% when identifying lung cancer samples, and 97.5% when detecting healthy samples. Junqueira said: “This work is very exciting because it paves the way for further research along two paths, both of which could lead to new, cancer-detection tools. “One is using canine scent detection as a screening method for cancers, and the other would be to determine the biologic compounds the dogs detect, and then design cancer-screening tests, based on those compounds.” The team hopes that the study could help pave the way to larger-scale research projects that can unlock the power of canine scent detection, as an efficient means of ultimately identifying cancer biomarkers. The team is planning further research in November, when breast-cancer patients will donate samples of their breath for trained cancersniffing dogs, in the hope that the samples can be separated into their chemical components, and presented to the dogs.

Guardia trio are injured by runaway thieves’ car

The silver Mercedes used in the chase after the collision

THREE Guardia Civil officers were injured when trying to prevent a fleeing car from entering the A-67 motorway in Cantabria’s Corrales de Buelna area, in the opposite direction.

The car’s occupants, two men aged 26 and 22, of Romanian nationality, were suspected of stealing five high-end mobile phones in the neighbouring town of Torrelavega, earlier that day. The incident occurred at around midday last week, and a call was circulated to officers that a robbery had taken place, and that the accused had fled the scene in a silver Mercedes. The car was quickly discovered, trying to enter the A-67 motorway towards Palencia, and an operation was set

up by fellow Guardia officers to seal all exits along the stretch of road. But, in an attempt to confuse the chasing patrol cars, the Mercedes left the motorway at the Los Corrales exit and attempted to rejoin the motorway in the opposite direction. Given the inherent danger of driving against traffic, a swift decision was made to intercept the vehicle by colliding with it, and forcing the driver to stop. But, following the successful crash, the suspects ran into nearby woodland, where one of them was arrested quickly. The other man was detained later in the day, following a search. An earlier probe determined that the same thieves had been linked to an earlier robbery in the week, helping themselves to electrical equipment worth around €40,000. An investigation is in place, hopefully, to uncover any further links to unsolved robberies in the area.

Chloe, 3, nearly turfed off an overbooked flight home

BRITISH girl Chloe Meacock, aged just three, was almost forced off an easyJet plane, heading to the UK from Mallorca, because the airline had overbooked the flight.

Chloe, from Chester, had been on a Thomas Cook package holiday with her parents, Claire Quick and Chris Meacock, and her 18-month-old sister, Charlotte. The family had been advised by Thomas Cook to check in for their easyJet flight before

they arrived at Palma airport, but it was not possible. “When we got to the airport, they told us that because we hadn’t checked in online, they had re-sold Chloe’s seat and that she might not fly,” Claire told the Independent newspaper. “Then the check-in manager rejigged things, so that my husband was overbooked.” In fact, Mr Meacock had to wait until everyone had boarded and there was an empty seat, before he was allowed on the plane. An easyJet spokesman said: “We do our best to look after young families, providing regular and specific

information, encouraging them to check-in online as early as possible, before arriving at the airport, so they can be seated together.” Many airlines practise overbooking, where more tickets are sold than there are seats available. However, European airpassenger rights require airlines to seek volunteers, before selecting people to be offloaded against their will. A Thomas Cook spokesperson said: “We are very sorry that Mrs Quick and her family experienced this issue on their return flight, and we have asked easyJet to look into what happened.”

Exploding warehouse leads to black, hazardous fumes

A LARGE cloud of black smoke, from an industrial explosion, emanated from a site in San Roque, near Gibraltar, on Tuesday afternoon.

The fire, and dense-black clouds of potentiallyhazardous fumes, filled the skies from 3.10pm. The explosion source was confirmed as a warehouse on the industrial complex, owned by the Indorama Ventures Quimica company, which manufactures plastics. The flames caused a huge column of smoke, which spread across the Bay of Algeciras. A crew from the Cadiz Fire Department was at the scene, and more firefighters, from the Málaga province, were transferred to San Roque. Finally, the roaring fire was controlled, and, according

to the Junta, the Indorama factory assured authorities that the flames had remained inside the warehouse, where additives were stored for plastic manufacturing. The regional government urged locals to remain calm, and follow the advice of official sources only. It also advised people to close doors and windows to prevent the potentiallyharmful smoke from entering homes, after one person was rushed to La Linea hospital, suffering from smoke inhalation. Two makeshift, intensive-care units were set up near the site, in case any of the 100 personnel battling the blaze needed medical attention. But no one else had been injured at this stage, although Green groups advised residents near to the flames to lock up their homes, and even wear face masks if possible.

Migrant deaths over 1,000 since the start of last year MORE than 1,000 migrants have, reportedly, died since the start of 2018, while attempting to cross the Mediterranean to Spain from North Africa.

According to a Spanish group, fewer than 25% of those crossing have been found. And migrant rights NGO Caminando Fronteras reported that only the remains of 204 migrants have been retrieved, from the 1,020 believed to have perished. She added that 12 boats, carrying the migrants to

Spain, had gone missing on their voyage across the Mediterranean Sea, since the beginning of last year. But because of restrictions on immigration by Italy and other countries, Spain became the preferred route to Europe. Many of these migrants have crossed the 15km Strait of Gibraltar, from Morocco, in small, extremely overcrowded, inflatable boats. According to activists, European countries are now leaving sea rescues to North African countries, who have fewer resources and skill, and thus, potentially, endangering their own lives.

THE last tax year was yet another record year for UK inheritance tax (IHT) receipts. HM Revenue & Customs received an extra £200 million in 2018/19, generating a total of £5.4 billion.

This was shared between 27,000 families, paying an average tax bill of £200,000 each. Why is IHT revenue increasing, and even forecasted to reach £10 billion by 2030? Limited allowances and rising property prices While the 40% tax rate has been unchanged since IHT’s inception in 1986, the ‘nilrate band’, an individual’s tax-free allowance, has been frozen at £325,000 for the last decade, and the annual

More families caught in UK inheritance-tax net

exemption for lifetime gifts at £3,000, since 1981. Being static, these bands have not kept up with inflation over the years, and have been eradicated further by rising property values. As house prices have continued to grow, so has the number of estates being pushed over the IHT threshold, and the amount of tax payable. Over the past five years, it is estimated that 50% more properties have fallen into the IHT net. Since April 2017, the residential nil rate band (RNRB) has provided extra inheritancetax relief when passing on a main home, including overseas homes owned by UK domiciles. Starting at £100,000 per person, the allowance increased by £25,000 in 2018, and by the same amount this April, to reach its current level of £150,000. It will peak at £175,000 in 2020/21, before it starts tracking the Consumer Price Index, each year.

Day-care nursery leader bullied and hit children A WOMAN, aged 28, has been charged by the National Police with mistreating small children at a La Laguna nursery. She is the day-care Nursery Director at the centre, looking after small children, from birth to three years of age. But anxious parents reported her behaviour, after listening to their children, not only complaining about her, but terrified to attend the centre. The investigation began after the first official complaint was made on 12th June. And, as well as mistreating the youngsters, there is also a possibility of administrative irregularities, which is why work inspectors are also involved. As well as their probe, and the official complaints, the police discovered that the detainee punished the children by locking them inside a room if they misbehaved. She also denied them breakfast, as well as pinching their tiny noses to forcefeed them. And officers were also made aware that she would smack the kids on their hands, arms and faces, as well shaking them,

28th June 2019 - 4th July 2019

Any unused relief is transferable to a spouse on death. When combined with the standard allowance, couples today can potentially pass on up to £950,000 tax-free, or £475,000 for individuals (increasing to £1 million/£500,000 in April 2020/21). While this sounds high, remember that all owned assets may be considered for IHT purposes, including savings, investments, vehicles, businesses, life-insurance policies and other properties. Furthermore, eligibility for the RNRB is quite restrictive. The full allowance only applies to a main residential home, directly passed to children and grandchildren, and valued under £2 million. Higher-value properties are subject to a tapering system that eliminates the allowance when a home exceeds £2.3 million (in 2019/20). Regardless of value, heirs other than direct descendants, and second homes or investment

properties, do not qualify. There are also concerns that many people are not taking advantage of the RNRB because they are simply not aware it exists, or cannot understand how it works. Changes to non-domicile rules Reforms to non-domicile rules could have also helped increase IHT earnings. As it is domicile that determines liability, not where you are resident, many expatriates remain subject to UK IHT, often without realising it. Changes from April 2017 mean it can take up to four years to lose a UK domicile of origin, after relocating and acquiring a domicile of choice in your new country. Foreign-born UK residents are also now deemed to be UK domiciled, after living in the UK for 15 (previously 17) out of the last 20 tax years. Regardless of domicile, UKbased assets always attract UK inheritance tax. Before 2017, however, this did not include

UK residential properties that were indirectly-owned (“enveloped”) through a trust or corporate structure. Now, all UK residential property is within IHT firing range. Cross-border estate planning can be a minefield. You could even be subject to inheritance taxes in more than one country, so take specialist advice to get it right, and take advantage of the planning opportunities available. The tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices which are subject to change. The costliest 3-star holiday of them all Hotel Club Palia La Roca, not worth €30,000 for holiday

while she shouted and screamed at them. The parents and a guardian, who made the official complaints, had all noticed behavioural changes in their children. The smaller kids were frightened and didn’t want to go the nursery, and though a few of them had marks and bruises on them, the parents were told by staff that it was kids’ stuff, caused by other children, To date, there have been nine official complaints made about the Nursery Director, although police are expecting more to follow. Once all the statements were collected, the relevant procedures were carried out, and the woman running the centres was presented before the judicial authorities. The shocking case is now in the hands of the courts.

A BRITISH mother, who was looking to book a family holiday, was bewildered to be quoted more than €30,000 for a threestar resort on the Costa del Sol. Rachael Morrell was browsing easyJet for a 10-night, allinclusive stay, when she spotted a Benalmadena hotel that ticked all the boxes. However, she could not quite believe the £32,949 price tag, which was more than the average UK salary for a year. Other searches for the package holiday, at the

Hotel Club Palia La Roca, departing from different UK airports, were also advertised as being around £30,000 for a family of four. A similar deal at a nearby five-star hotel, however, cost less than half that price. Rachael’s screenshots showed how her holiday would cost her £32,949 between 29th July and 8th August for four people in one room, flying from Newcastle to Malaga. The same stay, at the Don Carlos Leisure Resort & Spa in Marbella, added up to £13,789. She uploaded the images online, asking: “Is there something extra special about this hotel for this price?”

The Hotel Club Palia La Roca, which boasts a 4/5 rating on TripAdvisor, is just metres from the beach, and it offers an all-inclusive option, as well as a kids’ club. EasyJet has since removed the offer from its website, and a spokesman told MailOnline that the extortionate quote was given in error. He added: “We’d like to say thanks for alerting us to this simple error. We have put a temporary hold on the sale of this particular hotel, while we look in to what has happened in the background. “We hope to have it fixed and available at the correct price to book again as quickly as possible.”

Around every corner there’s always an extraordinary creature.” Dame Judi Dench In this brand new documentary series for ITV, national treasure Dame Judi Dench embarks on a wild adventure to Borneo to explore one of the oldest and most spectacular rainforests, meet its enchanting animals and get a vivid insight into the importance of this rainforest to life on our planet. Judi reveals her passion for both orangutans and their habitat as she delves deep into one of the few untouched rainforests remaining in South East Asia. Featuring stunning footage, the series brings to life this incredible rainforest which has some of the most diverse wildlife on the planet and the tallest tropical trees in the world. The tallest was recently discovered to be over 100 metres tall and the series sees Judi climbing one. During her adventure in Borneo, the world’s third largest island, Judi experiences amazing interactions with animals including orangutans, sun bears, elephants, crocodiles and hornbills. She glimpses stunning flying creatures like the unusual gliding mammal, the Kubong, that can fly for over 100 metres. She also sees more than a million bats, a dung beetle called Bob and a snake she names James Bond. Dame Judi is astonished when the jungle comes alive at night. With as many as 80,000 species, the insects in Borneo could make up nearly one tenth of the number on the planet As she travels down one of Borneo’s mightiest rivers, the Kinabatangan, Dame Judi goes on an extraordinary crocodile hunt where young crocodiles are plucked from the river by hand and adult crocodiles wrestled - all in the name of science. And finally she explores the wonderful marine life – the forests of coral that fringe the shores of the tropical island. As she shares her magical wildlife adventure with her chap, naturalist David Mills, they learn how important the rainforest is as the lungs of the world and how the animals are actually helping us by maintaining the health of this unique environment and helping save the planet.

Anna: The Woman Who Went To Fight ISIS Wednesday 3rd July, BBC2, 21.30

Trevor McDonald’s Indian Train Adventure Sunday 30th June, ITV1, 20.00

The veteran newsman boards the Maharajas Express – an extraordinary train that recreates the heritage of India’s richest kings – for an eight day tour of India, taking in its most wondrous sights. Thirty years after he last visited as a foreign correspondent, he sees how India is rapidly transforming itself into an economic superpower, complete with high-tech factories, five-star hotels and the most expensive home on the planet. In the second part of his eight-day journey on the Maharajas Express, Sir Trevor sees how the former jewel of the Empire is now overtaking Britain as an economic superpower. Along the way he visits an unusual temple where the locals worship rats; visits the Taj Mahal, and reveals the shocking extent of pollution that threatens the future of the monument. He concludes his journey at the very spot where Mahatma Gandhi – the man who lead India to its independence - was assassinated.

What made 25 year-old Anna Campbell leave the safety of her home in Sussex to travel to Syria and fight against the so-called Islamic State? Despite having no military background Anna joined the YPJ, an all-female Kurdish fighting force in 2017. Just eight months after arriving in Northern Syria, Anna went to the front line to fight. A month later she was killed by a Turkish air strike. Although Anna died a hero for many, her death left unanswered questions for her family and friends back home in the UK. Now her father Dirk is trying to make sense of his daughter’s decision, by following in her steps and travelling to Rojava in Northern Syria to speak with commanders of the YPJ and fellow members of the militia who knew Anna, and lived and fought alongside her. With exclusive access to Anna’s diary, and footage she filmed while she was in Rojava, Dirk explores what motivated his daughter to leave, and how to make sense of its tragic consequences.

Sarah Payne: The Untold Story Thursday 4th July, ITV1, 21.00

“When I think about her, I think of her playing with her brothers and her sister. If those were her last moments on this earth, then that’s what I would have chosen for her… That must have been a lovely afternoon for them. Both the boys are dads now. I can live with her not being here any more. I can’t live with them not being able to live their lives because she’s not. And I can’t have him [Roy Whiting] take any more than he took. He took enough that day and I won’t give him any more.” - Sara Payne In this new documentary for ITV’s Crime & Punishment strand, Susanna Reid speaks to Sara Payne about the murder of her eight-year-old daughter Sarah, reflecting on the devastating impact it has had on her family, and the lasting legacy of her death nearly 20 years on. The abduction and murder of Sarah Payne from a field near her grandparents’ home in Sussex in July 2000 shocked the nation, particularly when it was revealed the culprit Roy Whiting was a convicted paedophile who had committed a similar crime - though not murdered the girl - some years previously. Sarah’s mother campaigned to change the law, allowing concerned parents access to the sex offender register, and succeeded in changing the criminal justice system. A decade on, as she turns 50, Sara Payne gives Susanna a vivid insight into her daughter, her family and the effects the murder and ensuing court case had on those left behind in their wake. Featuring interviews with Sarah’s brothers and sister, as well as her grandparents, who have never spoken before, the documentary explores the case from the Payne family’s perspective, going behind the headlines to explore how they coped at the time, and the long-lasting impact it has had on all of them.

The Looming Tower BBC2, 21.00

At the 2004 Congressional Joint Enquiry into 9/11 former National Security Co-ordinator Richard Clarke (Michael Stuhlbarg) has an apology to make. Later, CIA witness Diane Marsh (Wrenn Schmidt) testifies anonymously - and less candidly. Tuesday 11 September is just another day at the office for John O’Neill (Jeff Daniels), now the World Trade Centre’s Chief of Security - until disaster strikes. In Yemen, FBI agent Ali Soufan (Tahar Rahim) is with other Americans being hurriedly evacuated when he is summoned back to the US Embassy. The CIA needs his expertise to confirm if the hijacked aircraft attacks are the work of al-Qaeda, so local agent John Chihoyne (Joe Corrigall) finally hands over intel Soufan has been requesting for months - and Soufan has a troubling call with agency go-between Vince Stuart (Louis Cancelmi). As White House staff are ordered to vacate, CIA chief George Tenet (Alec Baldwin) reveals to Clarke a diplomatic headache, while Condoleezza Rice (Eisa Davis) has a surprising response to the al-Qaeda angle. Out at Langley, Virginia, vindicated Martin Schmidt (Peter Sarsgaard) is asked to return to ‘Alec Station’ - but the man has conditions. In New York, dust covered Bob Chesney (Bill Camp) visits Liz (Annie Parisse). Has she heard from O’Neill? Soufan’s aggression gets him in trouble, but when General Qamish (Ali Suliman) learns the motivation he allows the FBI agent to finally question Abu Jandal (Zaki Youssef). Can Soufan rein-in his anger and get anything useful from the man, former bodyguard to Sheikh Usama [Usama bin Laden]?

Kylie at Glastonbury BBC1, 18.00

Lauren Laverne and Clara Amfo introduce an epic hit-filled set from Queen of Pop Kylie Minogue, who finally makes her Worthy Farm debut in her own right after being forced to pull out in 2005 following her breast cancer diagnosis. Expect wall-to-wall hits, stunning song-and-dance routines and a massive crowd all dressed up and ready to celebrate Kylie’s 30-year reign as adopted British pop royalty. Following Kylie onto the Pyramid Stage there’s highlights from Miley Cyrus with plenty of attitude, global hits like Wrecking Ball and the recent Mark Ronson collab, Nothing Breaks Like A Heart. Plus there’s an acoustic set from emerging reggae princess Koffee and a film introduced by the Reverend Kate Bottley exploring the spiritual pull of the Vale of Avalon and the legend of The Glastonbury Thorn.

Hey Tracey!

In the third show of the series the celebrities taking part are Love Islands Eyal Booker, reality star Ferne Mccann and comedian Stephen Bailey and playing on the opposite team is Ibiza Weekender Jordan Davies, Real Housewives of Cheshire star Tanya Bardsley and comedian London Hughes. If our celebrities don’t know the answer to Joel’s unusual questions, they can say “Hey Tracey!” and enlist the help of his very own virtual assistant. But forget your high-end Silicon Valley artificial intelligence – Tracey was thrown together by some sixth formers in the late 90’s as part of their technology coursework… and she can usually be found tucking into a pie or painting her nails.

In every household right across Britain, food and drink is one of our biggest weekly outgoings. In Save Money: Good Diet, Sian Williams and chef Phil Vickery investigate how we can spend less and get super tasty, healthy food. This week we continue our countdown of our top 10 favourite family dishes and challenge Phil Vickery to wow us with his own super healthy, low cost and of course mouth-watering version. This week Phil takes on two recipes which delicious dish will claim number six and number five in our countdown this week? Sian investigates what’s money well spent in our shopping baskets – this week she and dietician Liz Fleming lift the lid on kids’ lunchboxes to see what really goes into them and how much sugar they contain. Can they create a healthier, cheaper lunch box which is still tasty and fun but contains less sugar? Nutrition Therapist Ian Marber looks at breakfast cereals to give his guide to the best and worst of the best sellers. And we’ll be asking, is it possible to get a taste of luxury at affordable prices? This time it’s that summer high tea favourite - macarons. Our group of trusty taste testers will take part in a blind taste test of two award-winning products, one significantly cheaper than the other. Which will get their taste buds tingling?

Her Majesty’s Cavalry ITV1, 20.30

The Household Cavalry’s 280 horses descend on a Norfolk beach as the regiment heads off for its spectacular annual summer camp. For outgoing Colonel, James Gaselee, it’s a time to reflect on his time commanding the regiment. After weeks of drop-outs, the remaining new recruits need to pass the final, and hardest, inspection if they are to make it as fully fledged cavalrymen. We go behind the scenes as the regiment’s vet shows how she deals with the challenge of looking after the horses, who famously work as hard as the soldiers, before the best of the Cavalry’s troopers are pushed to the limit to compete for the chance of promotion.

Police relieve baffled driver of new Bentley

31 CW

Evil ‘Wolfpack’ did rape girl, aged 18, rules Supreme Court

The so-called “Wolfpack” go down for 15 years

A BRITISH driver was left fuming after his new, UK-plated Bentley was removed, with the help of six police officers in Benidorm, because of a slow, online database. In fact, he had to drive his twin-turbo supercar, accompanied by two police cars and six officers, who stopped traffic to escort him through Benidorm, because it did not fit on to a tow-truck that turned up. The officers had the car removed after checking a UK Government website and failing to find evidence that Dave McQueen had paid UK tax. Instead, they believed the twin-turbo Continental GT “was stolen”.

Mr McQueen told the police that the website stated it could take “five working days” to update, and that he’d bought the car just four days earlier. The angry driver said: “Surely, if the police are going to check your car, they must use a system that doesn’t take five days to update.” The next day a Link Point Legal solicitor retrieved the car for Mr McQueen, without any charges. The baffled owner later found that he had been driving home on two front tyres, which were flat. It cost him €650 for repairs… and left him with another week missing his pride and joy. His only explanation for being stopped in the first place could have been because of his ‘BE04ORM’ number plate.

SPAIN’s Supreme Court ruled last Friday that the group of men, including a Guardia Civil officer did rape an 18-yearold girl in the highly-controversial scenario. The “La Manada” verdict was delivered after the five-man group had initially been convicted of “sexual abuse”, having attacked the teenager during the

2016 Pamplona bull-running festival. In the sickening attack, the so-called “Wolfpack”, all from Sevilla, took turns to commit anal, vaginal and oral rape on the young tourist, while one of them recorded the ordeal on his mobile phone. But, following the initial, controversial trial, judges in Navarra found the five men, Antonio Manuel Guerrero, Jesus Escudero, Jose Angel Prenda, Alfonso Jesus Cabezuelo and Angel Boza, guilty of “sexual abuse”,

not rape. The earlier ruling, in April last year, sparked huge protests, and inspired women’s rights movements across the country. But, following an appeal from prosecutors, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously last week that the men had committed rape. Judges in the land’s highest court not only criticised the previous judgement of Navarra’s Superior Court of Justice, but increased each offender’s prison sentence by six years, to 15 years!

Cable thief caused huge problems for everybody

Dental work leaves woman with nothing to smile about AN angry woman has served a denuncia on a 10-strong group of dentists, after their numerous, botched implant procedures left her front teeth in tatters. The appalling dental work is said to have taken place over a six-year period, between 2010 and 2016. And she had to face more than 80 visits, as well as a bill in excess of €12,000. After many failed treatments, the state of her teeth has led her to be diagnosed with chronic oral candidiasis (oral thrush) and severe depression and anxiety. The official complaint was made after the dentists who treated the woman informed her that the warranty of treatment had expired, and advised her to look elsewhere for any further work.

She took the matter to the Cadiz College of Dentists, which later submitted a report to the Junta de Andalucia. It stated: “Obvious damage has been caused to the patient by a treatment, apparently, not planned correctly, which has been unjustifiably delayed, and without providing the functional and aesthetic objectives to which she aspired when contracting oral rehabilitation with the clinic.” The College of Dentists has urged the two parties to reach a “friendly agreement”, but compensation is likely to be received by the patient, who can expect a sum of roughly €125,000. But that still won’t put a smile on her face!

Homes and businesses were left without phone and internet connections

A MAN aged 30, who had been stealing communication cables, was arrested for causing havoc, leaving homes and businesses without a phone or internet connection.

His ridiculous behaviour disconnected a large area of Cuevas del Almanzora, in the Almeria province of Andalucia.

Individuals and companies were unable to make even emergency calls, and alarms weren’t working either. The Guardia Civil 062 centre alerted a patrol to the problem on the night of 30th May. Fortunately, officers were quickly able to locate where the cables had been cut, and they also spotted an individual fleeing the scene. A search of the area the following morning led to the discovery of the tools used, and what officers believed was the criminal’s vehicle.

Officers detained the 30-yearold Cuevas resident a day later when he tried to retrieve the car. Their inspection of the vehicle revealed that he had the back seats down, so that he could load it up with stolen cable. The Guardia also found additional evidence, linking the man with the theft. His actions caused damage costing more than €2,000 to repair the communications lines, and he was charged with a crime against collective security.

Egyptian tomb still bursting with colour…4,300 years on!

Ex-partner remanded after body is recovered at home THE tomb of a Fifth Dynasty official has been unearthed in Egypt, and, incredibly, the interior still remains colourful, while the adornments and inscriptions are well-preserved. Archaeologists made the astounding find in March this year. The tomb is located near Saqqara, a metropolis near Cairo, and it belongs to a senior official named Khuwy,

who is believed to have been a nobleman. He and his family were a part of the Fifth Dynasty, which ruled over Egypt some 4,300 years ago. Reportedly, several tombs related to the Fifth Dynasty have been discovered lately. Archaeologists recently found an inscription on a granite column, dedicated to Queen Setibhor, said to have been the wife of King Djedkare Isesis, the Dynasty’ eighth king. Mohamed Megahed, leader of the excavation team, said in an Antiquities Ministry

statement: “The L-shaped Khuwy tomb starts with a small corridor, heading downwards into an antechamber. And from there, a larger chamber, with painted reliefs, depicts the tombowner seated at an offerings table.” The tomb was unveiled to the public recently, and, according to reports, Egypt has dedicated itself to promoting archaeological discoveries across the country. The aim is to revive tourism, which took a hit from the country’s turmoil in the country, which began in 2011.

THE former partner of a woman, whose body was found buried under a workshop floor of their shared home, has been remanded in custody.

Jaume Badiella, 54, is said to have broken down and confessed to being responsible for the death of 49-year-old Mónica Borràs Villaró, when police investigating her disappearance dug up her body. But he has since invoked his right to silence. Badiella was watching as officers lifted tiles in his Terrassa home, in the Catalan town, to make the gruesome

discovery, after using radar to pinpoint the location. He has always denied any responsibility for her disappearance last August, despite reporting her missing. Although they were no longer involved romantically, they still shared a two-storey house in the Catalan town. The suspect maintained that she had stormed out of the house after one of her periodic outbursts, for which she received medication. But police were highly suspicious because she left behind her mobile phone, keys and car. After several months of investigation, the regional police gained a warrant to arrest the suspect and search his home.

Spanish doctor banned for spreading claims of vaccines causing autism

THE Madrid Medical Association (Icomem) has banned Spanish doctor Isabel Bellostas for 364 days for spreading “unsupported claims, against scientific evidence, on the origin and cause of the autism spectrum disorder,” health sources have told national newspaper El PAÍS. According to these sources, Bellostas has been charged with serious misconduct for her theories on autism, and for “promoting treatment and operations, completely lacking in evidence that have serious health effects for patients”. Icomem has confirmed the length of the ban, but not, specifically, whether it has been applied to Bellostas. The case was brought by the Spanish Autism Confederation, which also preferred not to reveal the identity of the doctor, who works at a private medical centre. “Our primary goal is to protect families from messages and practices that go against scientific evidence,” said a spokesperson for the organisation, which represents 77 pro-

vincial and regional autism associations. Bellostas is a well-known figure in anti-vaccination circles. She presents herself as a paediatrician, and is listed as such in listings at some private medical centres in the Madrid region. But El PAÍS was unable to confirm whether she was qualified in this area; nor could it confirm her version of events, despite numerous calls to her phone numbers. Bellostas has claimed in various online articles and interviews that vaccines are dangerous and linked to autism: theories that have no medical basis. “A child with autism is suffering

from digestive problems, with 100% of their small intestines affected,” she writes, in a letter published on the website of Josep Pámies. He is another defender of pseudo therapies, currently being investigated by the public prosecutor for promoting a type of bleach as a cure for AIDS and cancer. In a letter, presented in the case against Bellostas, she gives false hope to the parents of autistic children, assuring them that the disorder is reversible. “Once the diagnosis is made, the future looks black and very dark, because they don’t give you hope of recovery,” she writes. “But that is not true. It’s just that normal doctors are not trained to help your child recover.” Bellostas also warns parents: “Never again vaccinate a child with autism.” In other online texts and videos, the doctor espouses other popular pseudo-therapy claims, which go against scientific evidence and can lead to serious health risks.

In one, she says she was fired from a public centre for “informing parents of the existence of human foetal DNA in paediatric vaccines, and its possible link to autism”. The ban against Bellostas comes after the Spanish Autism Confederation reported the doctor. It marked the first time disciplinary action had been taken in Spain against the theory that vaccines and autism were linked. This claim is one of the most common, repeated by pseudo therapy defenders, despite having been disproved, repeatedly, by scientific studies. In April 2018, the Barcelona Medical Association banned a doctor for five years for “sharing and practising with cancer patients the so-called Hamer Method, also known as New Medicine”. In this instance, the disciplinary proceedings were brought on by the doctor himself, after he sent the Barcelona Medical Association a letter defending his practices. Last August, the Spanish Autism Confederation gave the

Madrid Medical Association a folder containing writings from Bellostas on autism. According to the disciplinary filing, her actions violated the medical code of ethics. The doctor failed in her duty to provide patients with “human and scientific medical attention”, to give prescriptions that respect “scientific evidence and authorised instructions,” to “offer honest and competent advice to the patient”, such as “promoting preventive activities of proven value,” and to respect that “medical information has to be objective, prudent and truthful, so as to not raise false hope or spread unfounded ideas.” In a press release, the Spanish Autism Confederation explains that claims like those spread by Bellostas hurt people with autism, who could choose to “delay or stop really effective treatment, which is a health risk”. The organisation said: “These claims raise false hopes, and also hurt public health by spreading disinformation and causing confusion.”

IT should have been a straightforward business trip, and engineer Robert Mansfield-Hewitt had rented a room in what seemed an ordinary apartment, in San Roque, in the Cadiz province of Andalucia.

He was preparing to attend meetings in Gibraltar, but what the 51-year-old engineer didn’t know was that someone was using the adjoining garage to stockpile 1.5 tonnes of hashish, worth a whopping €5.5m. The Chichester man found out the hard way, when he was arrested and handcuffed in a dramatic raid on the property last June. And, despite urgent appeals from family and friends, as well as his local MP in the UK, he has since been locked up in Algeciras’ notorious Botafuegos prison, home to ETA terrorists and murderers. Hewitt. who has a PHD and is an avid poet in his spare time, had been incarcerated behind bars for exactly one year yesterday (Thursday). For a man with ascites, a severe liver disease, who has not been getting his medication regularly, if at all, it has now been 366 days of hell. Police were alerted to the rental property’s garage, which Robert claims he never stepped foot inside, when a Moroccan man was seen trying to break in. As the Olive Press online newspaper reported last year, the home was owned by a man with previous convictions for drug-dealing, and Mansfield-Hewitt had a business he worked with in Gibraltar. But that seemed irrelevant, when, 48 hours later, Robert was placed before a judge at San Roque court, who sent him to prison to await trial. He has since been denied

bail three times, despite suffering serious health issues, which led to him to being rushed to hospital on two occasions. His health is still “touch and go”, according to a close friend and neighbour in the UK. Worse than that, he faces losing his home there because the rent has not been paid for months. “It’s just awful, and the authorities in Spain are burying their heads in the sand,” said Cliff Ruffle, 57, who has known MansfieldHewitt for years. “Rob is a lovely, lovely guy who wouldn’t hurt a fly. He’s a sensitive soul, and it’s just awful what is happening.” The teacher added that Mansfield-Hewitt is “just a hair’s width” from losing his home in

Emsworth, Hampshire. “We have just been able to stop the repossession order, but the courts are saying that if they don’t hear news shortly, it will have to happen,” he said. “I’ve written so many emails to different government departments, and I feel as though I’m banging my head against a wall.” Mansfield-Hewitt, despite his deteriorating health condition, along with a lack of evidence, continues to be detained. One bizarre reason for the denial of bail was that investigators found a Japanese ‘Katana’ Samurai sword in the house, which, they said, constituted a lethal weapon. And. shockingly, it wasn’t until 27th May this year that he finally had a court hearing.

Prosecutors are said to be seeking four years and eight months of jail time for him, as well as an €8m fine. Yet an official court verdict, which was meant to have been delivered within 10 days, has yet to be made. “They offered to let him go if he pleaded guilty,” said his UK supporter and friend, Ruffle. “But Robert refused. He is a man of great ethics and will fight this to the very end.” Meanwhile, his friend of 20 years, Vicar and RAF Padre Rebekah Cannon has also described the “hopeless” situation as “a stalemate”. Mansfield-Hewitt’s PA, Pillie Ford, told the Olive Press: “It has now gone beyond the limits. This is an innocent man… and the real man in question is hiding in Gibraltar.”

Man fails to flee Spain with his four children

GUARDIA CIVIL officers moved swiftly to arrest a man at Malaga Airport last Thursday, as he prepared to flee the country with his four children. The incident happened after a 28-year-old Swedish woman reported her husband for domestic abuse to the Guardia in Nerja, on the Costa del Sol. She told them that they’d had an argument over a phone-charger, which he then used in an attempt to strangle her. The woman was worried

that he would leave the country with their children, after finding an email with flight tickets to Sweden. Guardia officers waited at Malaga Airport’s security area, and spotted the man with his children, and

arrested him. A Torrex judge has released him, but an investigation into domestic abuse will be staged, and the husband is not allowed within a 500m radius of his four children and wife.

British boy, aged 5, dies in a swim-pool tragedy

Heartbreak in La Vinuela, on the Costa del Sol

A BRITISH youngster aged five, who drowned on Spain’s Costa del Sol last Thursday morning, was with his family, visiting his expat grandfather in La Vinuela.

A telephone operator at Spain’s emergency centre told The Sun newspaper: “A call was received at 10am saying a child had fallen into a swimming pool, and had been pulled out, unconscious. “The incident happened in

an area of La Vinuela called Los Romanes. The Guardia Civil, Local Police and the emergency ambulance service were alerted. “An air ambulance was sent to the scene, along with a medical ambulance, but we were later informed that the boy had died.” He could not confirm or deny whether the death had occurred at the home of the boy’s grandfather. A Guardia Civil spokesman confirmed the tragedy, adding: “There is nothing else to report at this moment, other than that a routine investigation has been opened to determine the facts.”

Website managers acquitted of piracy FORMER administrators of websites, spanning three film and TV series, which became popular in the Spanish-speaking world, were acquitted last Friday of violating intellectual property rights.

A court ruled that they merely directed users to illegal servers, yet one association of audio-visual producers had estimated the damages they caused to rights holders at more than $565 million. Prosecutors had sought a two-year jail sentence against the four defendants, as well as fines and compensation. The three websites concerned were seriesyonkis. com, peliculasyonkis.com and videosyonkis.com; “series junkies,” “film junkies” and “video junkies” in English. The sites, created in 2008 by an intern at the University of Murcia in Spain’s south-east, became hugely popular in the Spanish-speaking world. But prosecutors said the

websites “gave internet users access to audio-visual material, protected by intellectual property rights,” providing web links to other sites, in which online users could watch or download films and series for free. But a Murcia court ruled that the defendants’ three websites “did not contain any kind of audio-visual content, but only published the links that led to other

servers, where the works were put up.” The court also ruled that none of the defendants obtained direct income from the number of downloads of the banned films or series on external servers. “The income received was indirect profit from advertising, that appeared on the web pages in the form of pop-ups and banners.” it said.

Madrid’s booziest street, with 72 bars in just 1km A RESIDENTIAL street in Madrid, which has morphed into a theme park, is now known as the hottest road in the capital, according to Lonely Planet.

Its guide to Madrid describes it as being “lined with tapas bars and cocktail spots in Madrid’s Chamberí neighbourhood, which has rocketed in recent years”. One in two commercial premises along this onekilometre stretch of the capital is a bar… in fact, there are 72 in total! Back in 2008, bars constituted 34% of the street’s commercial activity, but that figure now stands at 49%. And they are all open for business, seven days a week. Such is their success that queues form outside some of these venues, just to get a beer, or a glass of wine. But while the bars are bustling, the residents are angry, fed up with the relentless noise. Parking space has also become a problem, not to mention the gentrification of the area and the landlords’ strategies, forcing out long-term tenants in favour of tourists. “The area is almost at breaking point,” said Julio López de la Sen, President of El Organillo neighbourhood association. And, says López de la Sen: “The rise in bars, which is pushing out other local business, is going to end by pushing out the residents. “It has happened gradually. We’ve been aware of it, but it is now out of control. It is hard to imagine the problems that ‘ponzaning’ brings.” ‘Ponzaning’ is a term, coined a few years ago by area entrepreneurs, to describe the activities of drinking, eating and having fun, which they defined as “a trend” and “a philosophy”. Ponzano street wasn’t always synonymous with fashion, but Michelin-starred chef and MasterChef panellist Pepe Rodríguez fuelled its popularity in 2015, when he said: “Two of my favourite restaurants are on this street,” referring to El Doblado and Taberna Averías. The neighbourhood’s turning point probably happened 10 years earlier, when the Sudestada restaurant opened up. Until then, Ponzano street was on the fringes of Madrid’s celebrated bar and restaurant scene. Almost instantly, Sudestada became a roaring success,

with chef Estanis Carenzo receiving praise, not only from clients but also from fellow chefs such as Dabiz Muñoz from DiverXo. In 2013, the Academia de Despiece opened with its adjacent Sala de Despiece, which offered an innovative combination of dinner and gastronomy masterclass. Two years later, La Contraseña popped up, and then, in July 2016, the street became absorbed into the local Fiestas del Carmen, consolidating its “hot” reputation. “The problem was obvious then,” said 68-year-old Pilar Rodríguez, district spokeswoman for Socialist Party (PSOE) and a resident of 30 years in the area. At first, the new bars were welcomed, and Rodríguez, a pharmacist, was told by locals 15 years ago that it was a relief to see different businesses coming to the area. After all, this was a neighbourhood with one of Madrid’s largest, ageing populations! In fact, it still is: there are 220 residents over the age of 65 for every 100 under the age of 16. It is also the area with the

most female residents: 78,140 women to 61,308 men. “Many years ago, Ponzano street needed an injection of life, but this is too much,” said Rodríguez, who also sits on the Board of Noise, which was set up in 2015. “What we need now is some peace and

quiet.” Four years ago, a new bar opened every two months, and there is now a watering hole every 15 metres. The phenomenon is one side of the coin, while the other is the closure of small retailers, after decades of struggle. There has been a 3.5% decline in local business in the Madrid region since 2014, while the number of food and drink establishments has risen in the same period by 1.2%. But the local mum-anddad stores, selling clothing, electronics or spectacles, have more than bars to blame. For years they’ve been dealing with competition from shopping centres, rising rent, and, most recently, the popularity of online sales. Ponzano street is undergoing a huge transformation, with bars

replacing local shops. Where there was once an antique store, there is now a trendy café, and, instead of a bakery, there is a cocktail bar. Even some of the original venues, which triggered the trend, have gone out of business, such as the iconic Sudestada, which shut in 2017. The most recent to go under is Lambuzo, which specialised in cuisine from Cádiz. The vacuum is filled quickly by chain restaurants and cocktail bars. But a few of the smaller outfits continue to thrive, such as Charnela, whose owner Alejandro Yravedra specialises in cuisine, using home-grown ingredients. He has long dreamed of setting up a food-and-drink business, having invested all his savings in a street with a good future, the way he sees it. And who would argue?

Dead wife’s husband is released without charge THE husband of a 63-year-old Swiss woman, who was found dead at her home last Friday, has been released, provisionally, without charge. The 64-year-old man, also from Switzerland, was arrested and taken into police custody for questioning about alleged domestic violence. He was in court, before a judge, first thing last Monday morning, along

with the autopsy report, showing that the woman’s death was not the result of a traumatic event. The cause of her death is still pending further laboratory testing. But during the autopsy, multiple bruising across the body, mainly the abdomen, skull, face and chest, as well as her limbs, were clearly visible. Yet the autopsy also proved that the bruises were not recent, and had not contributed to her death. Autopsy tests clearly revealed that the deceased had suffered dehydration, as well as malnutrition.

But they also proved that the woman hadn’t died a violent death, and that there was no other proof to suggest her husband’s involvement. However, the cause of death is still suspicious, because there were indications that the woman had been left abandoned, so further autopsy tests will be carried out. But tests did reveal that the woman had an infection in one arm, which came from a fracture she had endured at the beginning of this month.

Through hell to help others

FRIDAY 21st June 2019 was the longest day of the year, even more so for Craig Phillips, who completed “The Ultimate 50” challenge. The day after his 50th birthday, Craig went through hell to help others in need. He completed 50 sets of 50 exercises, and ran 50 km, to raise awareness and money for charity. Cruz Creative was there to broadcast the event live, and capture Craig’s journey, throughout the day. The day started at 6.30am on Puerto Colon beach, where Craig set off on his first run, and started what turned out

Steve Coster, owner of Bootcamp Tenerife, told James Tucker: “He is the most dedicated person I know, and I have no doubt that he is going to make it.” After 2pm, the crowd gathered in Yates Show Bar and Restaurant, dressed in sponsorship T-shirts, made especially for the event. Spectators enjoyed free entertainment and a barbecue during Craig’s runs, holding their breath each time he returned to struggle through yet another

set of 50 reps of his exercises. The afternoon was focused on raising money and awareness for charities like Helping Hands, which helps underprivileged children of Tenerife, and EPIC, a charity providing access to safe drinking water, for villages in Tanzania. By late afternoon, it became very clear how exhausting

“The Ultimate 50” was. But, through all the aches and pains, Craig crossed the finishing line at 6.29pm, and everyone sighed with relief. He had made it, completing what was a very demanding challenge. At the end of the day, he told Agata Pawlak: “I will obviously try to carry “The Ultimate 50” name forward

and put it out there, so other people can try it”. We are very excited to see what Craig does next. But, for now, he is happy to announce on “The Ultimate 50” page on Facebook that he has raised over €3500 for the charities. Give Nyssa a chance! ALL dogs deserve a second chance, and a new beginning. Meet this beautiful dog, Nyssa. Her name, in Greek, means new beginnings, and this girl really needed one.

One night, over a year ago, she was abandoned at K9, and we put her in with two other dogs. They were in our bigger kennel, across the road. These dogs were not great with other dogs, so it was a miracle they did not harm her. But when we saw Nyssa the next day, we could see why they hadn’t. When we arrived at the kennels the next morning, we saw this very scared, nervous dog, who was not in good condition at all. She had massive sores on her back end, and her skin was quite bad. It became quite clear that she had been used for breeding, and these sores were from constantly sitting on hard floors. She hadn’t had a life. She immediately touched all our hearts at K9. Her trust was gone, understandably, and it took a long time, months

even, for her to begin to trust us. Her tail remained down between her legs for quite some time. We gave her lots of love and affection, and she began to gain confidence. The more we get to know her,

Walnuts go back a long way! Walnuts (Juglans regia) are tree nuts belonging to the walnut family.

They originated in the Mediterranean region and Central Asia, and have been part of the human diet for thousands of years. These nuts are rich in omega-3 fats, and contain higher amounts of antioxidants than most other foods. Walnuts are usually eaten on their own, as a snack, but can also be added to salads, pastas, breakfast cereals, soups and

baked goods. They’re also used to make walnut oil, an expensive culinary oil, frequently used in salad dressings. There are a few edible walnut species. The common walnut, sometimes referred to as the English or Persian walnut, is grown worldwide. Another related species of commercial interest is the eastern black walnut (Juglans nigra), which is native to North America. Fats Walnuts contain about 65% fat, by weight.

Like other nuts, most of the calories in walnuts come from fat, and

this makes them an energy-dense, highcalorie food. However, even though walnuts are rich in fat and calories, studies indicate that they don’t increase obesity risk, when replacing other foods in your diet. Walnuts are also richer than most other nuts in polyunsaturated fats. The most abundant one is an omega-6 fatty acid called linoleic acid. Vitamins and minerals Walnuts are an excellent source of several vitamins and minerals, including: *Copper: this mineral promotes heart health. It also helps maintain bone, nerve, and immune system function. *Folic acid: also known as folate or Vitamin B9, folic acid has many important biological functions. Folic-acid deficiency during pregnancy may cause birth defects *Phosphorus: about 1% of your body is made up of phosphorus, a mineral that is mainly present in bones. It has numerous functions *Vitamin B6: this vitamin may strengthen your immune system and support nerve health. Vitamin B6 deficiency

may cause anaemia *Manganese: this trace mineral is found in the highest amounts in nuts, whole grains, fruits and vegetables *Vitamin E: compared with other nuts, walnuts contain high levels of a special form of Vitamin E called gammatocopherol. Other plant compounds Walnuts contain a complex mixture of bioactive plant compounds. They’re exceptionally rich in antioxidants, which are concentrated in the brown skin. Health benefits of walnuts Walnuts are linked to a number of health benefits. They have been associated with a reduced risk of heart disease and cancer, as well as improved brain function. Heart health Heart disease, or cardiovascular disease, is a broad term used for chronic conditions related to the heart and blood vessels. In many cases, your risk of heart disease can be reduced with healthy lifestyle habits, such as eating nuts. These effects are likely caused by the beneficial fat composition of walnuts, as well as their rich

antioxidant content. Brain health Several studies indicate that eating nuts may improve brain function. They also show that walnuts can help with depression, and agerelated decline in brain function. A study in older adults linked regular consumption of walnuts with significant memory improvement. Walnuts have also been shown to improve brain function in animals. When mice with Alzheimer’s disease were fed walnuts every day for 10 months, their memory and learning skills improved significantly. Similarly, studies in older rats found that eating walnuts for eight weeks reversed age-related impairments in brain function. These effects are likely due to the high antioxidant content of walnuts, though their omega-3 fatty acids may play a role as well. Cancer prevention Cancer is a group of diseases characterised by abnormal cell growth. Your risk of developing certain types of cancer can be reduced by eating healthy food, exercising, and avoiding unhealthy lifestyle habits. Since walnuts are a rich source of beneficial plant compounds, they could be an effective part of a cancerpreventive diet. Observational studies have linked the regular consumption of nuts to a lower risk of colon and prostate cancer. This is supported by animal studies indicating that eating walnuts may suppress cancer growth in breast, prostate, colon and kidney tissue.

SPAIN has again dominated the World’s 50 Best Restaurants List, with three kitchens in the top 10. It was pipped to the No.1 spot by Argentine-Italian chef Mauro Colagreco’s Mirazur, in Menton, France. But Spain equalled its record haul of 2018, with seven Spanish restaurants handed gongs at the event, dubbed the “Oscars of fine dining”. Spain’s highest entry, Victor Arguinzoniz’s Asador Etxebarri in Atxondo, the Basque Country, rose to thirdbest after coming 10th last year. Another Basque star, Andoni Luis Aduriz’s rural San Sebastian restaurant, Mugaritz, also climbed to seventh. Meanwhile, ninth place went to last year’s highest new entry, Barcelona’s avantgarde Disfrutar, which shot up from 18th. The Basque Country shone at the glitzy ceremony,

staged at Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands hotel, with five restaurants in the top 50, while Barcelona had two. Azurmendi, in Larrabetzu, came in at 14th, Barcelona’s Tickets 20th, Elkano, Getaria, in 30th, and 32nd place went to Bilbao’s Nerua. Conspicuous by their absence from the list were the famous Roca brothers, of El Celler de Can Roca, whose Catalan kitchen had previously been the best on the top-50 list. That was because this year’s awards, sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna, saw restaurants previously crowned “best in the world”, elevated to a “Best of the Best” list. Since its 2002 inception, the illustrious parade of global gastronomy has put a Spanish restaurant top of the pile on seven occasions: El Bulli five, and El Cellar de Can Roca twice.

Accidents - what to do if there are injuries

and assist, if possible. In Spain, this is known as PAS, Proteger, Avisar y Socorrer. Steps to follow after an accident: The first step is to check the vital functions of the injured party. To do this correctly, we need to observe their breathing, then attempt to talk to the victim to assess their level of consciousness, and the answers they are

able to give. Once these steps have been taken, you would then need to see if they are suffering from any bleeding or bad wounds. If the victim is unconscious or isn’t breathing, then CPR may need to be performed. This is carried out by placing the victim, preferably, on their back on a flat surface. If the victim has a severe bleed, then we would need

to attempt to stem the bleeding. This can be done by elevating the wounded area, if possible, by applying pressure on the artery that is providing the blood flow, or by applying a compression bandage over the affected area. If none of these is possible, then apply pressure directly to the wound with a cloth or rag. Always use gloves, to protect yourself.

If you can’t help in any of these ways, one of the most vital tools used is to keep the victim calm by talking to them. Don’t attempt to remove the victim from the vehicle until the emergency services have arrived, unless his or her life is in imminent danger. Never remove bikers’ helmets, unless they are affecting their breathing, or they are having trouble breathing, or, specifically, if they have vomited. Always call the emergency services and request an ambulance. This can be done by calling 112. The call is free and can be made without credit on your mobile, or call time needing to be used. As in a UK 999 call, you will be asked which service you require, and for the location. Try to give as much detail as you can. brain. They may slow age-related mental decline and help ward off Alzheimer’s disease, but not getting enough is linked to learning impairments, as well as depression. In general, eating fish seems to have positive health benefits. One study found that people who ate baked or broiled fish, regularly, had more grey matter in their brains. Grey matter contains most of the nerve cells that control decision making, memory and emotion. Coffee Two main components in coffee, caffeine and antioxidants, help your brain. Caffeine has a number of positive effects on the brain, including: *Increased alertness: caffeine keeps your brain alert by blocking adenosine, a chemical messenger that makes you sleepy *Improved mood: caffeine may also boost some of your “feel-good” neurotransmitters, such as serotonin *Sharpened concentration:

one study found that when participants drank one large coffee in the morning, or smaller amounts throughout the day, they were more effective at tasks that required concentration. Drinking coffee, over the long term, is also linked to a reduced risk of neurological diseases, such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Blueberries Blueberries provide numerous health benefits, including some that are specifically for your brain. Blueberries and other deeply-coloured berries deliver anthocyanins, a group of plant compounds with antiinflammatory and antioxidant effects. Antioxidants act against both oxidative stress and inflammation, conditions that may contribute to brain ageing and neurodegenerative diseases. Some of the antioxidants in blueberries have been found to accumulate in the brain, and help improve communication between brain cells. Animal studies have shown that blueberries help improve memory, and

may even delay short-term memory loss. Turmeric This deep-yellow spice is a key ingredient in curry powder, and has a number of benefits for the brain. Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, has been shown to cross the blood-brain barrier, meaning it can directly enter the brain, and benefit the cells there. Broccoli Broccoli is packed with powerful plant compounds, including antioxidants. It’s also very high in Vitamin K. This fatsoluble vitamin is essential for forming sphingolipids, a type of fat that’s densely packed into brain cells. A few studies in older adults have linked a higher Vitamin K intake to better memory. Beyond Vitamin K, broccoli contains a number of compounds that give it antiinflammatory and antioxidant effects, which may help protect the brain against damage. Pumpkin seeds Pumpkin seeds contain powerful antioxidants that protect the body and brain from free radical damage.

They’re also an excellent source of magnesium, iron, zinc and copper. Oranges You can get all the Vitamin C you need in a day by eating one medium orange. Doing so is important for brain health, since Vitamin C is a key factor in preventing mental decline. Eating sufficient amounts of foods which are rich in Vitamin C can protect against agerelated mental decline and Alzheimer’s disease. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps fight off the free radicals that can damage brain cells, and it supports brain health as you age. You can also get excellent amounts of this vitamin from bell peppers, guava, kiwi, tomatoes and strawberries. Eggs Eggs are a good source of several nutrients tied to brain health, including Vitamins B6 and B12, folate and choline. Choline is an important micronutrient that your body uses to create acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood and memory.

ACCORDING to the Spanish Penal Code (Código Penal), it is every citizen’s responsibility to assist an injured person after an accident.

What needs to be done? The first sixty minutes after an accident are crucial for injured parties. Between 30%50% of deaths occur in the first five minutes, and 75% within the first hour. In the majority of cases, death is caused by extreme blood loss, or breathing problems caused by airway obstructions. This is why it is crucial that all road users know basic first aid, to help reduce the number of deaths. It is important to remember that, in an accident situation, we need, first of all, to protect the injured party from further injury. Then we must call for help from the professionals,

By Val Sainsbury Your brain is the control centre of your body, and it’s in charge of keeping your heart beating and allowing you to move, feel and think, amongst other things!

That’s why it’s a good idea to keep your brain in peak working condition. The foods you eat play a role in keeping your brain healthy, and can improve specific mental tasks, such as memory and concentration. Fatty fish This type of fish includes salmon, trout and sardines, which are all rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids. About 60% of your brain is made of fat, and half of that fat is the omega-3 kind. Your brain uses omega-3s to build brain and nerve cells, and these fats are essential for learning and memory. Omega 3s also have a couple of additional benefits for your

Scooters and Mad Hatters

OURPLACE Playboys started off well against Suters 20:30 Crew, going 2-0 ahead, thanks to a Del Boy maximum.

But check-outs from Ray (113) and Jamie (105) helped the visitors set up a match-deciding trebles, which Playboys won to earn a 4-4 draw. Sandy’s Bookie Boys also went two-up, thanks to a 180 from Taylor. But Luc replied for the champions with another maximum, which helped to win the trebles to secure a 5-3 home win. In another topsy-turvy game, Mad Hatters won the singles 4-1, with Pocket Rocket Janice making headlines again. But, sadly, she just missed a fabulous 151 finish. Scooters & Chevy’s ‘A’ showed their resolve as they stormed back in the team games to record a creditable 4-4 draw. A 100 check-out by Marco Zurbo was the highlight of Emerald ‘B’s night, because they were brushed aside 7-1 by Pas O Nadas International. And The Pub, who were in sparkling form,

Playboys’ trebles all round

brought Waterfall back to earth with a 6-2 victory. In Division 2, Alex set the tone for his team-mates with a 137 finish in their whitewash at Clouseau’s, who could do nothing about the 8-0 score. Similarly, Marilyns welcomed Scooters & Chevys ‘B’ around the corner, and showed no mercy as they also completed an 8-0 win. Pas O Nadas travelled to newcomers Pink Elephant who sent them packing, again with a whitewash. Ourplace Playgirls, in fine fettle this season, travelled to Sundowners and came

back with a fantastic 5-3 win. Naughty Nautas welcomed Palms Sports Bar, and found themselves on the wrong end of a 6-2 scoreline, while Emerald Lounge’s experienced ‘A’ team took the same score home, following their visit to Picasso’s. The division’s two new teams fought out their first derby, as Charlie, for The Club House, recorded a 76 check-out, only for Activo to help themselves to the trebles, and a 4-4 score. Don’t forget, there’s a Captains’ Meeting at 1pm on Sunday (30th June), at Picasso’s Pool Bar.

Football MALLORCA are back in the big time, after a stunning comeback in the second leg of their play-off final saw them overcome Deportivo la Coruña. They are returning to La Liga, and will face the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid for the first time in six years, after overturning a first-leg, two-goal deficit. Ante Budimir, Salva Sevilla and Abdon Prats scored during a 3-0 win in the second leg, held at their home Iberostar Stadium, which led to a 3-2 success on aggregate. It means they join Osasuna and Granada as the promoted teams this year. Last Sunday’s result led to scenes of celebrations, with thousands of fans flooding on to the pitch to salute their team at the final whistle. And there were noisy scenes in Palma through the night as the jubilation spilled over. Rafa Nadal, French Open tennis champion and Mallorca native, who was in the stands, backing his local team, posted a picture of

Cycling BELGIAN cyclist Joren Touquet, who had been suffering heart problems, died in his sleep while on holiday in Tenerife. The professional rider had been forced to stop racing earlier this year after being

the fans’ celebrations on Instagram stating: “No words, incredible emotions.” Mallorca had finished the La

Liga 2 season in fifth place, but they overcame fourthplaced Albacete in the playoff

semi-final. Third-place Malaga were beaten by Deportivo, who had finished sixth.

Deportivo won last Thursday’s first leg 2-0 after Mallorca’s Marc Pedraza was shown a red card in the first half.

Pro cyclist Touquet dies on a holiday, in Tenerife diagnosed with a heart condition. In April, the 26-year-old found himself struggling in races, unexpectedly, and, after several tests, doctors said Touquet must stop racing

immediately. Luc Courtens, manager of Touquet’s DecockVan Eyck-DevosDapoen team, said: “We are all in shock. At first there was disbelief, but we have to face the

tough reality because Jorgen is no longer with us.” Touquet finished fourth during a race in his home town of Wevelgem, on 13th April, but told the team

he wasn’t feeling well. Then, five days later, he was forced to pulled out after two laps, struggling to recover. Touquet, who went for a cardiogram and was told not to push himself hard on the bike, was expected to have further medical tests to see whether he would even be able to compete again. After working for the team as a mechanic and caretaker off the bike, he went on holiday to Tenerife with his girlfriend, Elisabeth Vermeersch. But when she awoke on Tuesday morning (18th June), she realised he was not breathing. Touquet previously rode for the Continental Vérandas Willems team, who were struck by tragedy at the 2018 Paris-Roubaix. Belgian rider Michael Goolaerts suffered a cardiac arrest during the race and died in hospital hours later. His team said the

23-year-old received emergency treatment from medical staff at the scene. He was then transferred by helicopter to hospital in Lille for further treatment. But his team later confirmed that Goolaerts had died in hospital, surrounded by friends and family.
