Africans now back on migrants’ trail Continued from Front It is 10 years since the constant arrival of migrants in narrow, dug-out cayucos in the Canary Islands, was at its height. But the port area was soon converted into a reception, and Red Cross treatment area. It brought back harrowing memories of a cruel, vicious trade, in which heartless criminal gangs took every meagre spot of cash the passengers had, and enslaved them with unpayable debts at the delivery point. The alarm was raised at 5.30am on Tuesday when the cayuco was spotted, drifting off Playa El Camison. Search-and-rescue patrol ship Salvamar Alpheratz

sped out from Los Cristianos and guided the old wreck, in which the migrants had sailed, into the port. One passenger, with a head wound, was transferred to the South’s El Mojon hospital for treatment, while others received medical examinations and

nourishing food, before being taken away to recovery centres. Of the 36 on board, 34 were originally from Senegal, one from Gambia and the other from Mali. It was difficult to tell their ages, but 11 boat people appeared to be children, and tests will have helped

establish their status. The old boat was divided into sections, with little room to move. There was a metal bucket used to house a fire, plus a few blankets and random clothes. A modern, outboard engine was the vessel’s only source of power. At the peak of the 2006

arrivals, many small boats carried over 100 people each, and the Canary Islands saw 31,678 refugees from the sea that year. But from 2007 to 2016, the overall total was down to 26,706, leading the authorities to believe that they had stemmed the tide, thanks to tighter seapatrols near the African shores. They had also rooted out and prosecuted the ruthless gang bosses, who preyed on the vulnerable, desperate Africans. Vigilance will certainly be increased now, for fear of another flood of migrants. And there will have been a sigh of relief that no fatalities emerged on this voyage.

Diabetes rife in Canaries

WORLD Diabetes Day took place on Tuesday, and, with that in mind, the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned that the disease had quadrupled over the past 35 years. Diabetes is higher in the Canaries than on the Spanish mainland, and experts say the increase in children and young people is alarming. Unfortunately, the Islands alone have a high rate of childhood diabetes and obesity. Paediatricians, who are particularly concerned about the increase of Type-2 diabetes, stress that the

disease is affecting very young children, and that a healthy diet, along with exercise, is so importance to this generation. The reason for such a diabetes increase is down to the high rate of poverty, with many families not having the economical resources to buy fresh, healthy products, The Canaries are yet another place on the map, along with Mexico and America, with much poverty, and significant rates of social inequality, together with a high rate of diabetes. It was suggested over a year ago that a prevention plan would be put in place, and that the Canarian Goverment, in particular, would put a higher tax on sugared and sweetened beverages. But

there appears to be no sign of these new taxes yet. A study in 2006 proved that fresh produce, fruit and

vegetables in the Canary Islands accounted for 39% of the income for a family on the minimum level.

And, to date, Canary Islanders have the most expensive shopping trolley in all of Spain.

Major tourist platform gives Canaries a boost

ADEJE and Arona were represented by their respective mayors at the recent meeting of the Alliance of Tourism Municipalities (ATM) in Spain. It was held during last week’s World Travel Market in London, and, along with representatives from San Bartolomé de Tirajana (Gran Canaria), they constituted the Canarian presence at the group event.

The ATM, conceived in March, has created a unified platform for tourism boroughs, enabling them to work on common causes, exchanging information and experiences, as well as proposing strategies to advance the industry as a whole. The group also work to defend quality in hotel infrastructure, leisure options, sustainability and respect for the environment. “The tourists who visit Spain choose to visit specific places where they expect certain services, and we need to make sure these

destinations are in the best possible condition,” said Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodriguez Fraga. By working together, he said, they could access regional and national governments, and the European Union, to explain the realities of the industry to them, and create positive synergies to meet future challenges. Arona Mayor José Julian Mena added: “Our integration into the alliance is very important for Arona, and also the South of Tenerife, as a zone. “Here, we have eight of the

most important tourist destinations in Spain, working together as a force to benefit competitivity, economic growth and job creation.” Mayor Mena also said that the presence of his colleagues, from Adeje and San Bartolome de Tirajana, would give Tenerife and the Canaries their own voice at the table, with equal billing as leaders of the industry. The Adeje Mayor added that, together, they were working “to evolve, improve and renovate the offer in a very active manner”.

PM’s plea for solidarity from a ‘silent majority’

SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy feels that next month’s snap elections in Catalonia will help end “the havoc of separatism” in the troubled region. Rajoy’s belief came during his first visit to Barcelona since the Government imposed direct rule on the region, more than a fortnight ago. Rajoy was in the Catalan capital last Sunday, addressing a campaign meeting, and showing support for his centre-right Popular Party ahead of the poll. He said he had “exhausted all roads” after the Catalonia Government, led by Carles Puigdemont, issued a unilateral declaration of independence at the end of October, and called on the “silent majority” to “convert their voice into a vote”. The PM added: “We will never let anyone break the ties that bind us. We must recover Catalonia from the havoc of separatism.” Earlier, former Parliamentary speaker Carme Forcadell, and five other former law-makers, were released on bail after being quizzed by a Supreme Court judge. But sacked leader Carles Puigdemont, who is still in Brussels, must appear in a Belgian court today (Friday), following a judge’s deliberation over a European Arrest Warrant issued in his name.

Our ‘ugly’ Make sure all your papers are in order capital! THERE was a lower turn-out than expected for the recent Adeje Focus meeting, featuring speakers from Blevins Franks and DeCotta Law. But those who attended will have been delighted. Important details were relayed to them on tax matters, information-exchange between jurisdictions and inheritance tax. Paul Montague spoke of the alarming number of people who don’t believe they need to pay tax here, even though they spend much more than half of the calendar year living in Tenerife. They also use the “residencia” discounts, are registered with, and use, the local medical services, own a home and car, and, perhaps, stay with a family member for a few weeks

back in the UK. They are, and will be, deemed to be “de facto” tax residents legally, said Paul, and he added that it was really important for people to realise this and get their financial matters in order. He stressed: “You do not have a choice where you pay your taxes,” and also said it was vital to make a tax declaration “now more than ever”. He also quoted Spanish Government sources, who have stated that British residents, “who have legitimised themselves” in Spain, will have few, if any, problems post-Brexit. In other words, get your paperwork, resident and tax status in order, now! Wayne Sheridan looked at the issue of the automatic exchange of financial

information on individuals between the Spanish and UK Government, which has been in operation since September 2016, saying: “It really was a gamechanger”. He quoted the experience of clients, who have received letters from the Central Bank in London because officials there have realised they have a Spanish phone number or car registration, so they should be declaring assets in Spain. The bottom line, he said, was that “if you have a financial asset you have not declared in Spain, or in another country, rest assured the Hacienda (Spanish tax office) will find out about it in due course”. The third speaker was Jon Sutton, from DeCotta Law,

who addressed the issues of wills and inheritance taxes. He spoke of changes in the laws regarding both, and urged non-Spanish residents with assets here (from a car to a home or business) to make a will. Having a will here will make life easier for your beneficiaries, and will also help them avoid inheritance-tax fines. His company also reminds people to ensure that if they have a UK will, or are about to make one, they must make sure that it does not have the wording: “I hereby revoke all former Wills and Testamentary dispositions heretofore made by me, and declare this to be my last Will”, because this would revoke any Spanish will you have.

A STUDY, published by Excite website, reveals that Tenerife capital Santa Cruz has been voted one of Spain’s ugliest cities. Among the arguments put forward in the publication is that Santa Cruz is old and heavily neglected. Also, the streets are dirty and the facias on many old buildings could do with a bit of a lift. In addition, says the survey, the city has a lack of history, compared with La Laguna and other neighbouring towns.

Mighty Barcelona protest demands leaders’ freedom AS many as 750,000 people took part in last Saturday’s mammoth protest in Barcelona, demanding the release of the politicians and proindependence association leaders. They are being held in pretrial custody over Catalonia’s secessionist drive. And family members of the ousted Catalan Government ministers, together with the ANC and Òmnium association leaders, read letters and messages from the imprisoned group. Present at the protest, held in favour of “the freedom of political prisoners”, was Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau. Catalan Parliament Speaker Carme Forcadell, also being investigated by the courts for her role in the recent unilateral declaration of independence, voted through the regional chamber, took her lawyer’s advice and stayed away, having been released from

pre-trial custody just a day before, upon full bail payment. At 4pm, an hour before the march began, thousands of people were already thronging the streets, many wearing a yellow ribbon in tribute to whom they consider to be “political prisoners”. They included former deputy premier Oriol Junqueras, and another seven ousted members of the Catalan Parliament.

They are all in pre-trial custody in Madrid prisons, while being investigated by the courts for rebellion and sedition offences. The march was the bestattended since 16th October, when some 200,000 people protested about the jailing of pro-independence ANC, and Òmnium association leaders Jordi Sànchez and Jordi Cuixart. They are accused of organising and encouraging protests in September,

said to have impeded the Spanish authorities from carrying out searches for material being prepared for Catalonia’s illegal 1st October, independence referendum. Another protest, on 21st October, calling for their release, attracted 450,000 people to the streets of the Catalan capital. Carles Puigdemont, the ousted regional premier facing similar charges to the members of his former

government, who has fled to Brussels, sent a video message to the protest, calling on citizens to remain “very active”, and expressing his trust that his jailed colleagues would hear the “clamour” of the people. “Let’s not let ourselves be frightened or constrained by those who want to impose the law of [Article] 155,” he said, in reference to the clause in the Spanish Constitution. It was used by the Spanish Government in Madrid to sack the entire Catalan Government, and to suspend self-government in the region. Puigdemont added: “The Spanish state cannot carry on like this. The European community must stop looking the other way.” His message was received with applause, and cries of “President, President!” Leading the march were family members of the jailed pro-independence figures, as well as the heads of the PDeCAT, ERC and CUP parties, all in favour of the secession of the region from the rest of Spain.

Mother We’re backing campaign stabbed to death against domestic violence ADEJE’S Department of Equality Politics has added its support to the Canarian Equality Institute campaign to counter domestic and gender violence.

A MURDER investigation began after a mother-of-two was stabbed to death in Gibraltar last Friday night. She was found in an apartment alongside a man in his forties, who also had serious knife wounds. The mum was treated at the scene before being taken to St Bernard’s Hospital, where, sadly, she passed away. The unnamed man remained in a critical condition there. A local resident described the victim, said to have grown up in North London, as “a lovely girl”. “She’s a beautiful woman,” said the woman. “ I can’t believe it it’s so sad.” The Royal Gibraltar Police say there is no danger to the public, and that they are not looking for anyone else as they launched a probe. A spokesperson said: “Members of the RGP’s Crime and Protective Services Division have been recalled. A murder investigation has been instigated, with a crime-scene investigation being conducted at the residence.” Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward, while Chief Minister Fabian Picardo called for people to respect the woman’s family at “this tragic time”. He added. “The harrowing circumstances of this matter are not for socialmedia speculation.”

The campaign slogan is, “If you don’t think like him, REACT. Pick equality”, with the aim of reinforcing relationships built on equality and mutual respect between men and women. It also underlines the reality of alternative forms of masculinity, promoting a peaceful resolution to conflict, rejecting domination and control as acceptable forms of behaviour in inter-personal relationships, and the benefits of a relationship built and based on equality between the sexes. Councillor Carmen Lucía Rodríguez, who presides over the department, said: “We are delighted to support

this campaign because the message being transmitted by the Canarian Equality Institute is also our message.” Of the campaign, she stressed that it was launched to combat all forms of machismo. The Equality Department is also running a series of events during the coming week, in the lead-up to next Saturday (25th Nov), which is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Included is a literacy course for women in the Costa Adeje Tourism Development Centre (CDTCA), from Monday (20th Nov) until 1st December, an art exhibition in the Cultural Centre, from Monday (21st Nov) to Tuesday (28th Nov), and a series of events and films for secondary-school students. And next Friday (24th Nov), there will be a reading of Adeje Council’s manifesto against gender violence, as

well as a minute’s silence on the steps of the Town Hall, in memory of all those who have died as a result of violent behaviour. Secondary-school students, who have taken part in the annual short-story competition on the theme, will also find out who has won the main prize. Other related activities include an “inter-generational” walk from Ifonche to La Quinta, and related workshops.

EMERGENCY services, trawling the Arucas coastline on the north side of Gran Canaria on Monday, found the body of a fisherman who had been reported missing since the weekend. The call was made at around 5pm on Saturday, claiming that a man a fallen into the sea after being knocked over by a huge wave. The body has since been transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine, in Las Palmas, where a full autopsy will take place. Seven fishermen have died this year, on and around the Canarian waters. In addition, six have been seriously injured, and two sea-rescue attempts with helicopters have taken place. For the second year running, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria have had three fatali-

ties at sea, and Lanzorote one. An awareness campaign has begun, reminding people about the preventive measures while fishing and being out sea. It is all about respect for the ocean, especially around the rocky shoreline, and it advises people to check the sea’s conditions, always. It also tells people to make a plan of where they will be, and when, and then sticking to it, always letting family and friends know. Unbelievably, with so many annual deaths at sea, the most important piece of advice is to wear a life-jacket and protective head gear… and the obvious: know how to swim! Not being able to, surprisingly, is one of the main causes of these tragedies.

What has changed?

Basically, you have more choice with what to do with the money you save in your pension. From age 55 you will now be able to access all the money which is in your pension pot. Before the changes were made you were limited to what you could take out each year.

Your Pension Pot Take your money as cash

Income payments as and when you want them

Guaranteed income for life

You can do this in one go or as a series of smaller amounts

Flexi-access drawdown

An annuity can secure regular income for the rest of your life

Or Any combination of the above options You don’t have to do anything with your pension pot now. You can leave it invested until you need it. And it’s at that point you can see which of the options available to you that will best suit your circumstances. It’s important you fully understand all the options and the different tax implications they have. Sebastian & St James will be able to help you with this and give you advise which suits your own needs.

Building your pension pot

You can see the amount of choices you have to take money from your pension pot. But to have those choices you will need to have first built up a pension pot. You might find yourself in one or more of the following circumstances, each of which could be the potential solution to increasing the size of the pension pot you have:

• You’re close to paying off your mortgage so may soon have further scope to consider an increase in pension contributions. • Your children are leaving home, easing some of your monthly financial commitments. • You have old pension plans that you may wish to take advice on, as to whether or not they may be better served within a new plan. • You’ve received some inheritance that you could consider the merits of investing into your current pension pot.

Do you know you get tax relief on payments you make to a pension pot? For a basic-rate taxpayer, this means it would only cost £80 to get £100 paid into your pot. The pension changes have had a positive impact on people’s feelings towards retirement and do give them more choices to help achieve the retirement they want. How you take advantage of the changes is up to you. But speaking to us can help you find out more about the changes or if your current circumstances mean you might be able to build up your pension pot.

Animal-shelter leader who killed thousands

THE former president of a Costa del Sol animal shelter is set to become the first person ever to be jailed for animal cruelty in Spain. A Malaga judge has ordered Carmen Marin, who previously ran the municipal cat and dog sanctuary in Torremolinos, to be imprisoned before the weekend. The landmark decision comes three weeks after the Provincial Court upheld her 45-month sentence, in the wake of an appeal. Marin was last year found guilty of slaughtering thousands of animals, from 2008-2010, despite preaching a zero-sacrifice policy. The judge released a statement saying that Marin had injected cats and dogs with euthanasia drugs “without any veterinary control or form of sedation, using inadequate methods and lower doses than recommended, causing

prolonged agony”. It proved lucrative because the shelter received cash from the town council each time it took in a new animal. Although the majority of the sentence is related to forged documents, it will go down as a historic case. That’s because one year of the punishment relates to animal cruelty, and it is the first time anyone has been jailed for such an offence in Spain. If Marin fails to present herself to police, a searchand-capture warrant will be issued in her name. Also, her sentence could even be extended because she and her two daughters remain under investigation by a Torremolinos court for suspected fraud, misappropriation and money-laundering. It is alleged that the trio used shelter money to fund a lavish lifestyle, including a 104,000-euro shopping trip, plastic surgery, luxury holidays to several countries, high-end cars and expensive meals.

Spanish nurses offered easier passages to UK SPANISH nurses, hoping to work in the UK, will be given easier Englishlanguage tests in future. Existing exams, thought to be too academic, have been blamed for a 96% drop in recruiting EU nurses, leading to a shortfall of them across the NHS. The exams were so difficult that even Australian nurses failed, despite English being their mother tongue. The Occupational English

Test is said to be easier because it tests nurses’ knowledge of medical terms, in contrast to understanding complex scientific processes and articles. Under the new rules, set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, overseas nurses can take a simpler exam to demonstrate their English language capability. The move comes into force this month, but the Royal College of Nursing is “firmly opposed” to any relaxation of standards “just to plug workforce gaps”.

A special playground for disabled children

ARONA Council is planning to build a playground, geared, especially, towards children with disabilities. The park, enclosed with coloured railings, will be built in Avenida Las Americas, known to many

as The Golden Mile. It has an estimated budget of 235,000 euros, and is expected to be completed within three months. The area will be set up with attractions, including special swings and a maze. There will also be a multi-game structure, wide enough to enable children in wheelchairs

to enjoy the fun as well. This special, recreational area will have a doublelayered, non-slip floor, to cushion the impact of small kids falling over. The project, which must meet all European Standards, has been subsidised by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Shark species that can be a real angel

THE waters around the Canary Islands are home to many mammals and fish, which are known to us. But an unfamiliar specimen is the Angel Shark. Those who dive and snorkel around the coast might have had the pleasure of spotting one, because they generally come into shallower waters for breeding refuge, and to lay their eggs. In fact, there is one in resi-

dence off the Las Teresitas beach, near Santa Cruz. These fish are in danger of extinction, so it is a pleasant treat to learn that they have adopted the calmer, warmer waters of the Canaries, especially around Tenerife. And the species is not

dangerous. It has a gentle and solitary nature, generally, and will not attack you. But it will defend itself… usually when it is trodden on by accident, or hassled by a swimmer or diver! But locals have become used to these visitors over the years, and know how to prevent upsetting them. The Angel Shark has a flat body and wide pectoral fins, with a huge resemblance to a stingray, especially as they both hide in the sand to camouflage themselves on the seabed.

Europe Music Awards head for Spain in 2018 MTV’S annual Europe Music Awards will be hosted in Bilbao for the first time next year, following last Sunday’s event at London’s SSE Wembley Arena. It marks the first time the ceremony will be held in Spain’s Basque capital, and the third time the event goes to the country. Barcelona first hosted the awards back in 2002, and, eight years later, the ceremony went to Madrid. More than 100,000 people are expected to attend next year’s show, where a host of international recording artists will be featured. The initial MTV Europe Music Awards were celebrated at Germany’s Brandenburg Gate, in Berlin, and the glittering event has changed location to other European cities every year since, with the UK notching up six venues. The Wembley crowd enjoyed performances from the likes of Camila Cabello, Demi Levato, Eminem and U2.

Rajoy’s party opposes bullfighting death law THE Spanish Government is to contest a law on the Balearic Islands, which bans the death of bulls in bullfights. A spokesman for the conservative government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said it was challenging “certain parts” of the legislation, which was adopted last year and hailed by animal-rights groups. “The autonomous community doesn’t have in its mandate the specific power to protect animal rights,” said Inigo Mendez de Vigo, from Madrid. The new law does not outlaw bullfighting completely, but it forbids the use of “sharp implements that can injure and/or kill the bull”, which, effectively, outlaws the animal’s slaughter. It also limits the number of animals that bullfighters can spar with to just three, with a maximum duration of 10 minutes per bull. In addition, it forces

bullfighters and animals to have anti-doping tests, before and after the corrida, and allows people aged 18 and above, only, to view the spectacles. Restrictions and bans have increased across the country, as a growing number of Spaniards believe the “sport” to be a cruel spectacle. But these restrictions have often come up against strong resistance from bullfight supporters, who still maintain the tradition

is an integral part of Spanish culture. Meanwhile, UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson left Spanish officials “fuming”, after speaking in support of bullfighting at an AngloSaxon dinner in Bath. The gaffe came as the UK’s Foreign Secretary told guests that attempts to ban the controversial practice were “political - correctness gone mad”. MPs honouring ties between the two countries at the event, said Johnson’s

“lecture,” during which he encouraged Spanish officials to support the “sport”, had sparked outrage. A source told UK media: “He antagonised every Spaniard there. They fumed for the rest of the dinner. Bullfighting is the subject of lively debate, and some parts of Spain have banned it. “But the Spanish don’t like people painting a caricature of their country as bullfighting, flamenco and paella.”

Passengers warned about flight delays DISRUPTIONS and delays to flights between the UK and Spain were expected yesterday (Thursday) as French air-traffic controllers joined a general strike in the country. The walk-out was called from 1am until midnight, in protest over changes to France’s labour laws. France’s Civil Aviation Authority called on airlines to reduce their schedules, and all airline companies warned that flights to and from France, and those travelling through French airspace, could be affected. Travellers were also encouraged to check the status of their flights yesterday, before departure. On Tuesday, Ryanair announced flight cancellations, but easyJet was planning to operate a full programme. A Jet2 spokesperson said the company would stick to scheduled departure times, advising customers to check-in for the normal departure times. During the last French a i r- t r a f f i c - c o n t r o l strike, on 10th October, there was huge disruption in the skies, Ryanair cancelling more than 100 flights to or from Spain. Now, though, Europe’s largest airline association has renewed its call for new measures to minimise the effect on travellers during strike action in France. Thomas Reynaert, who runs A4E, said: “With two-thirds of all European ATC strike days taking place in France, policymakers there, and throughout Europe, need to implement measures capable of minimising Air Traffic Management disruption’s impact on travellers. “More than 250 strike days since 2004 are

enough, and we cannot allow these well-paid, air-traffic controllers to restrict the rights of millions of European passengers.” Ryanair has said previously: “President Macron’s French Government has announced a major transformation of its labour laws. But it appears that nothing changes when it comes to air-trafficcontrol disruption, and unions holding Europe to ransom. “Enough is enough. If the French Government is serious about changing France, it should start by tackling these air-trafficcontrol unions, and, together with the European Commission, should take action to prevent thousands of European consumers having their travel plans disrupted by a tiny group of ATC unions going on strike. “They cannot stand idly by, as more disruption and travel misery is inflicted upon Europe’s consumers and airlines.” Ryanair and other airlines have called on the commission, repeatedly, to introduce the following measures, which would alleviate the impact of these frequent airtraffic-control strikes: *Require French airtraffic-control unions to engage in binding arbitration instead of strikes *Allow Europe’s other air-traffic controllers to operate flights over France during strikes *Protect flights over France under minimum-service obligations during French air-trafficcontrol strikes

A tasty treat for all to remember

NOVEMBER has been gastronomy month in Adeje for a number of years, and the 2017 Degusta. me (Taste Me) programme was launched last week.

As in previous years, thanks to Adeje Council, there are a range of workshops for all members of the family, plus trips events, and, of course, the Tapas Route, with prizes for the best restaurants as well as for the public.

Economic Development Councillor Manuel Luis Méndez Martín said: “Degusta. me is a gastronomic get-together for different sectors of the food industry, offering culinary creations, and promoting the best of cooking in the region. “Adeje Council knows that the tourist industry is the economic motor of the South of the island, and, in this regard, we have top-class hotels, which attracted about two million visitors last year. “We also have over 50,000 residents, so our gastronomy must offer

different and diverse elements, as well what is good, locally. We must also create jobs for our residents here, always bearing in mind that gastronomy is one of the determining factors in a tourist destination.” The tapas route began yesterday (Thursday), and runs until Sunday (26th Nov) with 14 establishments taking part: El Puente; Taberna Amores; Loren’s tasca; El Rincón del Sushi; Tasca Italiana La Favorita cake shop; cafetería Atlántida; La Salud bar; tasca El Cañón; cafetería Casa

Juan; Compostela restaurant; Metro pizza; León de Venezia and Rincón de Aranda. The full programme ends on 9th December, and 350 people have already signed up for events on offer. Most of the workshops take place in the CDTCA (Costa Adeje Tourism Development Centre), and registration is already open. The full programme is available in Spanish and English on the borough’s webpage, www.adeje.es, and flyers are available with the programme in public buildings in the town.

Quo planning on rocking this way

Pensioner dies on a flight from Tenerife A PASSENGER died on a flight back to the UK from Tenerife, despite the desperate efforts of a medical team to resuscitate him.

STATUS Quo, still touring and rocking after the death of front-man Rick Parfitt, are staging two Canarian concerts next year. They will be appearing in Tenerife, at the 5,000-capacity Pabellon Santiago Martin arena in La Laguna, on 25th May, and in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas the following night. The rockers started out in 1962, formed by Francis Rossi and Alan Lancaster, and have wowed generations with their non-stop hits. Parfitt died last Christmas Eve, and many thought the band would finally hang up their instruments. But they have been touring this year and are now

planning gigs for 2018. The Canarian shows form part of the Legends Live series, which has a proven track record, including last year’s UB40 concert at the 1,500-capacity Piramide de Arona, in Las Americas. The current line-up features long-standing members Francis Rossi and Andy Bown, plus John Edwards, Leon Cave and Richie Malone. It’s time to dig out those denims and practise your air-guitar. And whether your generation favours Pictures of Matchstick Men, Caroline, or What You’re Proposing, the Quo will have Whatever You Want. Ticket details are expected to be released within the next few days.

The holiday-makers were on board a Jet2 flight to Newcastle, when the elderly man passed away while the plane was in mid-air. Witnesses said they saw medics trying to revive the 81-year-old in his seat, as his horrified wife looked on. But they were unable to save him, and the pensioner passed away on the Sundaynight flight, causing it to be diverted to County Cork, in the Republic of Ireland. Wayne Clarke, 47, who was sitting towards the middle of the plane as the tragedy unfolded, said: “From what people were saying, this man must have taken ill in Tenerife because he had medical staff on the plane with him. He was sitting at the front of the plane with them and his wife.” Wayne said the flight was about an hour away from Newcastle when the man’s

condition deteriorated, and the medical staff tried to resuscitate him. He was in his seat and I could see them working on him, doing chest compressions.” He added. “The stewards told us the plane would have to be diverted because of a medical emergency, and I was absolutely devastated. “I wasn’t bothered about the delay, but my heart went out to the poor woman who had lost her husband. What a way for it to happen.” Another traveller, Vicki Jackman, said: “I was near the back of the plane, and I could see that a passenger was receiving CPR at the front. The crew and the

captain were outstanding.” The Boeing 737-800 plane was diverted to Cork Airport as the crew sought emergency medical assistance, but the man was pronounced dead shortly after landing. Passengers eventually touched down at Newcastle airport in a replacement plane at around 2.30am. A Jet2 spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a customer passed away on our Tenerife-to-Newcastle flight, despite our crew diverting to Cork Airport to seek emergency medical assistance. “We extend our sincere condolences to his family at this very sad time.”

Young drug-dealer’s painful school lesson Carmelo Diaz Pezcos is still missing

Adeje seeks your help HIS name is Carmelo Diaz Pezcos, a local man from Adeje, and it has been a year since he was last seen. Now, the Council is again asking for the community’s help.

AN 18-year-old youth has been arrested for dealing drugs outside a Tenerife school, in Adeje’s Avenida del Madroñal. The young Spaniard, known to the National Police because of his past record, was caught red-handed by officers, selling marijuana

outside the school gates. They discovered he was carrying 105 euros, plus a bag containing 9gms of marijuana. The incident happened at around 2pm as the students were finishing school for the day. Police, who were patrolling the area, became suspicious when they spotted objects being passed through the wound-down window of a car, parked right

outside the school gates. When they drew closer to the vehicle, the driver became agitated, which created more suspicion among officers. And when they detained the youngster, they discovered the drugs, hidden in his underwear. He was promptly arrested, and a subsequent report was forwarded to the courts, where the young drug-dealer will appear.

Carmelo was last seen in the Las Torres area, walking home after shopping at a local supermarket. An Adeje Council spokesperson said: “We know he was alone and was wearing a pair of glasses with a yellow lenses. He used these glasses regularly because of the dizzy spells he use to get through his diabetes condition.” The search began when his wife called the Local Police after Carmelo failed to return home.

Areas with difficult access, such as ravines and Adeje’s barranco, were searched by all the local emergency authorities. Posters were put up on lamp-posts and in bus shelters, and Carmelo’s face was also spread across social media. But with no information on his disappearance forthcoming, a second search was undertaken by the Guardia Civil, Red Cross and a Maritime search-andrescue team, who were all involved in hunting through neighbouring islands and the sea. Carmelo is still considered missing, and, with no successful leads, the investigation remains open and the search still continues. Any information of his whereabouts would be much appreciated by all concerned.

NEWS IN BRIEF Kitten fury at vineyard

RESCUE attempts to save a trapped kitten are being thwarted by vineyard owners in Cadiz, claim animal rights activists. It is believed that the huge Barbadillo bodega is not allowing local residents to save the poor mite, who has been trapped for at least two weeks in a drainage pipe, six metres high. Locals are devastated because the vineyard owners, who, allegedly, will not allow anyone to drill into the pipe, have also rejected help from a local plumber. Resident Maria Penya, said she had heard the kitten wailing for “well over a week”, adding: “I can hear its cries. It’s heart-breaking.” Animal rights group Brigada Animalista Rescate says that the police and the fire service were called, but no one has managed to reach the helpless kitten. The group believes it would involve drilling into the pipe, which would prove costly to the famous vineyard. Activist group members have now criticised the owners for their “cruelty”, calling for their wine to be boycotted.

Heart-attack man recovered

A MAN who suffered a heart attack while walking in Valle San Lorenzo is now recovering in Santa Cruz University Hospital. A call was made to the Canarian Emergency Services at around 7.45am, reporting that the 40-year-old had fallen in a street and was thought to have fainted. But Local Police officers, who arrived promptly, realised he was not breathing and began resuscitation immediately. Once the specialist life-support ambulance reached the scene, the medics administered further CPR and stabilised him, before transferring him to hospital.

I’m not hanging around…

A VEHICLE was left dangling out of a building after smashing through the wall of a Spanish car park. Residents of A Coruña, in Galicia, feared the worst when they heard “a tremendous bang, which sounded as though a gas canister had exploded”. But they were shocked to see a car hanging 30 metres above the street. Several people ran to the driver’s rescue, helping to hold the vehicle while she escaped, via the back seat. Happily, she was unharmed, and the car has since been removed… leaving a gaping hole in the wall.

Lifeguards save swimmer

PASSERS-BY, who spotted a man struggling in the sea at El Camison, alerted lifeguards, who carried him to safety. It was soon apparent that the 40-year-old was suffering a heart attack, and the lifeguards began resuscitation until the emergency services arrived shortly afterwards. Medics, who continued to resuscitate him, then transferred him to Hospiten Sur, albeit in a serious condition.

Ignacio is the supreme hero IGNACIO Echeverría, the London terrorist-attack hero from Spain, is to be given a posthumous distinction for his bravery, which is acknowledged as being the Metropolitan Police’s most-prestigious award. Metropolitan Police chief Helen Ball has written to Echeverría’s family, expressing the force’s “sincere condolences”, and inviting them to a ceremony, hosted by the City of London Corporation, at the Guildhall on 4th December. She said Ignacio’s “extraordinary acts of courage” would be recognised officially at the event by granting him the Commissioner’s High Commendation. It will also be the first time the award is given, jointly, by all three emergency services. Ignacio (pictured), an analyst at HSBC, living and working in the UK capital, lost his life when helping a police officer fend off the three terrorists who,

after ploughing through pedestrians on London Bridge, went on a random, knife-wielding spree in nearby Borough Market. The Spaniard, who lived in Galicia until he was 11, and then grew up in Madrid, was riding his bicycle with his friends and carrying his beloved skateboard. Ignacio, who spotted that the policeman was struggling, and that backup could take valuable

seconds to arrive, dropped his bike and began beating one of the terrorists with his skateboard. He almost certainly prevented a few deaths or serious injuries in doing so, but he was knifed in the back by another of the attackers, and, tragically, died in hospital hours later. The heroic Spaniard has been dubbed “the skateboard hero” by the British press ever since.

Big eye-opener for angels of the night FOR many women, street-walking is not an option. Many are young, lured by false promises through advertising and websites, offering them a world of opportunities.

But once they arrive at their destination, Tenerife included, it becomes clear that it’s a different story altogether. Most of these women, brought here through organised crime, face a lot of psychological and physical abuse. Then, once they are here, or elsewhere in the world, they are made to work as prostitutes to pay off their debts. The women are, generally, between the ages of 18 and 30, and are taken to countries where they cannot communicate because they cannot speak the language. And they are made to feel like aliens. Nigerian women, along with those from Romania, are made to work the streets, while South Americans tend to have appointments in private establishments. As for Central European woman, they are forced to

work the club circuit, nearly always rotating from club to club. And, it is believed, 95% of the woman “working” in this oldest profession here in Tenerife tend to be foreigners. The Cruz Blanca Foundation, now working alongside Arona Council since last year, is doing its utmost to help the prostitutes. Mediators and volunteers work alongside the Cruz Blanca team, speaking with these working ladies and offering them protective materials. They are also trying to gain trust by letting them know they have a voice, and that there is help available to them. The overall message is: “You are not alone!” The Cruz Blanca Foundation is in constant contact with the Organised Crime Unit, and with the National Police.

Beginning of the end for low-interest rates?

By Paul Montague

Partner, blevins Franks

ON 2nd November, the Bank of England increased the UK interest rate for the first time in over 10 years. Having lifted only from 0.25% to 0.5%, this is by no means a seismic shift. In fact, it brings it back to the previous, historic low, set in March 2009 and marking a 104-month run of rates below 1%. However, this represents a gear-change in the Bank’s outlook, following a decade in which “down” has been the only direction for interest rates. Is this a sign that the economy is improving? The previous rate change, which shaved off a quarter percentage point in August last year, was made in response to the Brexit vote. For some, this increase is not so much a sign of economic

recovery as a removal of the temporary “sticking plaster”, put in place during a time of intense uncertainty about the future. Now that the rate is back to its previous low of 0.5%, Britain is simply back to where it was, prereferendum. The Monetary Policy Committee, which sets interest rates, confirmed that Brexit is having a “noticeable impact” on its economic outlook. However, they outlined that better-than-expected UK economic growth was one of the drivers behind their decision to increase, along with low unemployment and resilient consumer confidence. Many see the rate increase as evidence that the Bank of England has changed course, and is preparing for future rate increases. With inflation (based on the Consumer Price Index) rising, and predicted to exceed 3% this month, interest rates are expected to be lifted further to dampen inflation growth.

How can the interest rates affect inflation? Generally, low interest rates help boost inflation by encouraging economic activity through cheaper credit, whereas higher rates put the brakes on creeping inflation by making borrowing more expensive. The Monetary Policy Committee indicated that future increases would be at “a gradual pace, and to a limited extent”. It estimates that two further increases within as many years, lifting the rate to 1% by late 2019, could be enough to reach its inflation target, amid Brexit headwinds.

What does an increased rate mean for everyone? While the increase is relatively small, any rise for savers can be a boost for money held in bank deposits. But, in practice, the link between the official base rate and savings rates is weaker than ever. An increase of this size is unlikely to warrant an overhaul of your finances. In the wake of the announcement, the British Pound dropped 1.8% against the Euro to just over 1.12 euros, as investors reacted to the Bank’s cautious tone about sluggish growth. Sterling is likely to remain volatile during Brexit uncertainty. This serves as a reminder that you are at the mercy of exchange rates if you draw income in Sterling while living in Europe, so seek advice on how you may be able to protect your investments and pensions. With interest rates expected to hover no higher than 1% over the next two years,

achieving better returns than money in the bank means considering “riskier” investments. Although market dips can be unsettling, you should have less cause for concern if you are invested, for the medium-to-longterm, in a well-diversified portfolio. Spreading your interests across different regions, asset types and sectors will limit your exposure in any one area. In any scenario, how you structure your finances should depend on your unique circumstances, aims, risk tolerance and time horizon, and not on speculation of where interest rates may go. Make sure you are bestplaced to deal with the challenges of the moment, be they prolonged, low interest rates, or Brexit uncertainty, with regular financial reviews. End of a TV era as Keith Barron dies

CO-STARS of seasoned actor Keith Barron have paid tribute to the television stalwart following his death, from a short illness, at the age of 83.

Gwen Taylor, who starred as Barron’s on-screen wife in Duty Free, was among those to express their sadness. “I have just heard that my old friend and colleague has died,” she said. “It’s quite a blow. Keith was such a kind, lovely man, and I don’t think I’ve met anyone that would disagree. My thoughts and prayers go to his loving wife, Mary, and his son, Jamie, who meant so much to him.” A statement from Barron’s agent said the star enjoyed a “long and varied career”, and that he was survived by his wife of 58 years, and his actor son. The veteran, from Mexborough, in South Yorkshire, was a regular TV fixture in Britain, starring in several popular shows, including Coronation Street. After national service in the RAF, he joined an amateur-dramatics group, which also

attracted actor Brian Blessed. His first major role came during the 1960s, as easy-going Detective Sergeant Swift in The Odd Man. He became a household name in Britain soon after, starring as Nigel Barton in the 1965 plays Stand Up, Nigel Barton, and Vote, Vote, Vote for Nigel Barton. He went on to make sporadic appearances in many top shows of the time, such as The New Avengers and The Professionals. But his most memorable role came as a leading man in the 1980s sitcom Duty Free, in which he starred as Yorkshireman David Pearce. It was set in Spain and ran for three series, from 1984 until 1986. More recently, Barron returned to screens in ITV’s DCI Banks, as well as having roles in Holby City, Doctors and Heartbeat. Former Casualty

actress Sunetra Sarker also paid tribute to her former co-star, writing on Twitter: “So sad to hear of dear friend Keith Barron passing away. One of a kind. Guaranteed laughter. Shall never forget those days. Old school.” Keith could well be considered to have been one of the hardest-working people in TV. He was rarely out of work, which, he confessed, was a bit “masochistic”. He said in 2003: “If I’m out of work, I’m terrible. I’m no good to anyone. If I go out, I’m all the time wondering whether the phone’s rung while I’ve been out. “And, if I sit in, waiting for it to ring, I’m like a bear with a sore head, wondering why it hasn’t. You take nothing for granted. “And the best thing about it, is being offered another job. It keeps the whole thing alive.”

Police pounce on pervy pensioner A PENSIONER has been held by police in Valladolid, alleged to have committed six acts of child-grooming, with sexual intentions, in the administrative capital of Castilla y León. The unnamed, 69-year-old Spaniard, would wait outside the school gates for young girls, who had finished for the day.

He selected children aged 10-13, in particular, handing each one a piece of paper with his telephone number written on it. He then told them, individually: “I like you very much. I would like you to call me.” Fortunately, one of the victims confided in her parents, which enabled the police to start investigating the pervy pensioner. As the probe got under way, the cops discovered that he had already committed

six acts of grooming, with similar characteristics, across three other Spanish provinces. The investigation started over a month ago, when the Valladolid mother of a 13-year-old girl reported the incident to the police. They learned that he had a history of this behaviour, adopting exactly the same grooming techniques in Zaragoza, Sevilla and Valencia. Fortunately for the victims, no sexual abuse took place.

Blue Planet II

Sunday 19 November, BBC1, 20.00

The big blue is a marine desert, far from shore, kilometres deep, with almost nothing to eat - and home to some of the largest and most spectacular creatures on Earth. With special pressure-proofed cameras we witness record-breaking feats of endurance, as sperm whales hunt for squid a kilometre down in the abyss. Until recently, no one knew how baby turtles survived in the vast open ocean. Big Blue reveals that they head to the centre of the ocean, where they use floating debris as life-rafts. Jelly-like Portuguese man-of-war harness sail-power to trawl for fish. Thousands of dolphins herd vast shoals of Lanternfish to trap them against the surface. Unique aerial footage reveals a centuries-old legend: the savage feeding frenzy of the ‘boiling seas’. Whale sharks make an epic voyage across the Pacific to a spot where, scientists now think, it may be safest to give birth. And a pair of ageing albatrosses give their lives to raise their very last chick. Yet even thousands of kilometres from land, there is evidence of human activity. Globe-spanning currents carry plastic into the heart of every ocean, often with tragic consequences. Could plastic be one challenge too far for the creatures of the Big Blue?

Blitz: The Bombs That Changed Britain Thursday 23 November, BBC2, 21.00

During the Blitz more than 450,000 bombs dropped on Britain - and every bomb has its own story. This series examines the specific effect of four bombs, from their initial impact on individual lives, right through to their wider consequences for the Second World War and all the way to the present day. Each episode begins with a single bomb in a single street in a single place: London, Hull, Clydebank and Bristol. Across the series incredible personal testimony, gutwrenching memoirs, and the meticulous records kept at the time, provide a visceral and terrifying account of the Blitz that directly connects with the human experience of the bombs. As survivors and relatives attest, these bombs touched the lives of everyone and created a legacy we all still live with today. Episode one follows a bomb that fell on Martindale Road in the East End of London on the first night of the Blitz. Stan Harris (pictured) and Norman Pirie were boys in 1940, but their memories of that fateful night are crystal clear. Initially there was relief as the bomb remained unexploded. As Martindale Road residents were evacuated, Sandra Belchamber’s grandparents were caught up in the chaos; she explains their fortuitous decision to leave London and head for Kent. But Judy Gregory’s grandmother, uncle, aunt and cousins put their faith in the authorities and headed to a local school to wait for buses to take them to safety. The buses do not come, and they and hundreds of others became a sitting-target for returning bombers. One man - journalist Ritchie Calder - tried to warn the authorities that the school was a tragedy waiting to happen. When the bombers did return they scored a direct hit, killing hundreds of people.

Australian Wilderness with Ray Mears ITV1, 20.00

CW

Ray is up at sunrise on the rugged Dampier peninsula in North West Australia. He’s here to see a unique phenomenon - the incredible high tides that vary as much as 12 metres between high and low. He wants to find out just how much these wild tides shape the lives of the animals and people here. Ray explores the rough and heavily indented coastline of Dampier - if it was straightened out, it would stretch half way round the world! He’s going to cross the peninsula from East to West, and the rushing waters, hidden reefs and whirlpools makes him wonder how the early explorers, with their wooden sailings ships, were able to survive here at all! As he watches rugged rocks rapidly emerge from the tide, Ray learns that the stirring of the water and the ocean floor creates feeding opportunities for marine life. Further out, he sees a dolphin mother and her calf. They are indo-pacific bottlenose dolphins, and they are either playing or chasing something to eat, stirred up by the tide. Perhaps the mother is teaching the little one how to hunt.

Andrew Graham-Dixon and Giorgio Locatelli explore the culture and cuisine of Italy, travelling from the tip of the heel up Italy’s dramatic east coast. The last leg of Andrew and Giorgio’s journey is the Veneto - a true melting pot thanks to its geographical position in north eastern Italy. They begin their journey harvesting clams which Giorgio cooks as spaghetti alle vongole in the middle of the Venetian lagoon. They continue their tour with amazing frescoes in Padua, the river Brenta and on land in Vicenza, they admire one of the most beautiful paintings in Italy - Giovanni Bellini’s Baptism of Christ. Andrew and Giorgio end their journey where the Venetians ended theirs - at the top of the Dolomites.

This week, Susanna Reid and Matt Tebbutt are in Kent with the Ockendens. This family of six are overspending on their food bill because Mum Sarah has to cook many meals to satisfy her fussy family. Matt takes on the challenge to reinvigorate their meal times with sumptuous dishes which will get them all eating together and save them money- including with veg packed meatballs for just 88p per person and a fabulous Mexican Feast for £6.71 for six people. Susanna is finding out how we can all save money by shopping smarter when it comes to veg - and she puts the nations favourite cheese and onion crisps to the taste test- how will the supercheap winner stand up to market leader Walkers?

In this quarter-final, the week’s best chefs return to continue their quest for the title. Their first challenge is an invention test set by Monica and Marcus. From a table filled with citrus, herbs and spices, they must create something truly special to impress the judges. They have 10 minutes to decide, then 70 minutes to cook their hearts out and create a dish from scratch, which allows the flavours of their chosen ingredients to shine through. The remaining chefs then face the critics - a test that has seen even the best fall apart under pressure. They must cook a two-course menu of their own design to be scrutinised by the judges and three of the UK’s most renowned critics Tracey MacLeod, Jay Rayner and William Sitwell.

WINDOW dressing is a vital part of any interior-decoration scheme. Curtains clearly have a practical use: to control the entry of light and heat, to give privacy and to create an intimate environment. Net curtains used to be a bit of a clichĂŠ in decorating terms, but new manufacturing

methods and a wider range of materials, combined with slimmer poles and rails, have brought them back in fashion, under the more

delicate name of voiles. Voiles can bring that finishing touch the room needs! They can be plain white or off-white, billowing freshly in a breeze, or more dramatic with a pattern or texture, and in a variety of colours. Coupled with a curtain or sun curtain, they can be used to decorate the room and provide privacy, while keeping it cool during stuffy, summer afternoons. If your property is overlooked, a voile is the best of both worlds, giving you a degree of privacy, while not blocking out the light completely. Voiles are also perfect for bedrooms, where you may wish to move around or get changed without anyone being able to see into the room, without blocking the outside light during the day. Because voiles are quite light in weight, they can be secured with slim, stylish poles. In addition, a

mixture of polyester, linen and cotton combinations means that voiles are easily washed and do not need ironing. This can be very handy when we have had a dusty calima here! The type of heading also influences your decorating scheme. For example, using heavily-gathered voiles will give an impression of opulence, and, perhaps, a colonial effect, while

flat curtains are to be used in a more-minimalist environment. The new perfect wave heading allows curtains to hang beautifully, with wide, even folds. If you need to open and close your voiles more often during the day, you might consider the rail with remote control, a futuristic gadget that will be warmly embraced by the man of the house. Ready-made curtains

are cheaper, and you may get lucky with the size, but there is nothing like a pair that have been tailor-made for your property. A professional will know what measurements the voiles should be to frame the window, and to be in proportion with the room, as well as giving advice on the perfect length. All items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo – 922 789 729.

The perfect combination TWO successful w e d d i n g planners, Tina and Claire, have joined forces to bring Weddings In Tenerife to the island, having lived here for a lengthy period.

They have also worked in the bridal industry for several years, both here and in the UK. Claire, a successful celebrant, writes unique ceremonies for each couple’s needs. She also has an eye for finding the perfect location for the style of wedding you want, through her extensive knowledge of Tenerife. And she can secure almost any location required. Tina, on the other hand, has an eye for detail and designs, turning the location into the dream wedding their customers require. From the colour scheme, the theme that flows through the individual weddings, she can also provide the invitations, favours, flowers, centre-pieces and everything in the middle. Oh, and she can also lay on the release of butterflies and doves.

Planning your day A couple’s wedding day is one of the most important times of their lives, and should be remembered fondly by their families and friends. The aim of Weddings In Tenerife is to turn that dream and vision into a reality, offering a passionate and personalised day, along with the support that only a local weddingplanner can bring to the bride, the groom and everyone involved connected to them.

stocks of wedding dresses and other wedding/party items.”

Weddings In Tenerife do all the hard work prior to the big day, and they are also there, right to the end, to make sure your day is as perfect as you imagined it could be.

Styling Tina and Claire take pride in creating a beautiful, bespoke wedding, which is unique and reflects the personality of the bride and bridegroom. And, with Tina, attention to detail is perfect. The pair always encapsulate the style, tastes and wishes of happy couples, be it traditional or modern, and bring it alive through the styling of their weddings.

The shop The opening of the Wedding In Tenerife’s bridal shop took place

this year. Actually, it’s not just a shop, but a place in which, from the moment you enter, you’re in a wedding paradise. It’s somewhere you can discuss, with two professionals, anything concerning the most important day in your life. It’s a shop where you can get the whole bridal experience, browse through wedding dresses and try them on.

Your choice You can select a colour scheme, a venue, the favours and the music, as well as the photographer. And you can obviously discuss dates and numbers, and if it’s going to be a legal ceremony, a blessing or a renewal of vows; everything, in fact, from venue to veil - and all in between! The shop has given Tina and Claire a firm base on which to conduct their much specialised business. When asked why they opened the shop now,

it was a very simple answer: “It was a natural progression of the business, and another step forward in establishing ourselves as the No.1 wedding planner, here in the south. “It also meant that we could expand our

Wedding dress (sale/ hire/lender) Tina explained that opening the shop enabled them to stock a beautiful range of wedding dresses and accessories. They have a variety of styles and sizes, from top designers including Hillary Morgan, Alfred Angelo and Amanda Wyatt, along with a range of veils, shoes,

tiaras and jewellery. And you don’t have to pay a million to look a million dollars, because they also offer a hire service on certain wedding dresses. In some cases, this may be the better option. One of the other services Weddings In Tenerife offer (believed to be unique in the south of Tenerife) is “Become a Lender’”. We all like the phrase “money for nothing”, and we all want that phrase to work for us. Tina and Claire have, over the years, had a lot of brides asking them to purchase their used dresses. The company is now in a position to do this, but cannot buy everyone’s. So they have come up with a concept of the lender partnership, which enables you to keep your dress, and earn an income from it.

Home hairdressing rules! hair & Fashion By Carl pattison from Robot

KEEPING up to your hair at home, after your salon visit, is the key to looking good until your next appointment. If you blow dry your hair, start with a good, moisturising shampoo and conditioner. Apply a blow-dry cream and/or serum to wet hair, to tame those frizzes. Then dry hair off to around 90%, pointing the hairdryer down to keep those cuticles flat. Then take medium sections and start to dry the hair, keeping the hairdryer moving at all times, or

you will fry your hair. Work quickly, in the direction of your haircut, pressing the cool button to seal in the shape, once dry. Then apply a small amount of serum again, to smooth down flyaway hair. Try not to run fingers through your hair during the day, and use a brush to maintain the shape. If you’re

ironing hair straight, then only blast hair dry, or leave it to dry naturally. This will minimise heat damage. Always keep the iron moving, and keep applying heat protection on every section. Your styled hair should last a few days, if you’ve done it correctly. Ask your stylist for tips when styling at home, too.

VERY few women are made in a perfect shape to fit all clothes. We come in all shapes and sizes, and this is why we should dress for our size, and not the figure we think we have. Curvier women shouldn’t be afraid to show off their shape. Find the right clothes, and you can enhance your figure, not cover it up. It’s all about selecting the right items to show off your best bits, and take away the attention from the parts you don’t like. I know it’s difficult to buy plus-sized clothing, but it is out there; it just needs finding. If you’re a

curvier girl, then you have every right to dress as you feel. Don’t blend into the background; stand out and be proud

of your figure. What is the ideal shape, and who wants to be “normal”? Be the best version of you, always.

Top fashion event THE Hotel Sheraton, La Caleta, will be staging the first Tenerife Fashion Extravaganza on Sunday, 19th November, an event that will unite a selection of the best names of international and local fashion which have settled on the island of Tenerife.

It will take place in the Pelinor Room, an outstanding venue known for its incredible quality,

design and easy access. The area will be divided into strategically-placed stands, which will give a perfect setting for all products. To guarantee its success, there will be widespread media publicity within the Spanish and foreign newspapers and magazines, informing many different people, both residents and tourists.

Sophia’s Wellness Centre If you hate gyms then give it a try; even non-exercisers love EASYTONE & Powertone. The revolutionary power-assisted exercise system makes shaping up EASY! The programme takes 30 minutes, and a personal appointment ensures no waiting! Just come as you are - no special clothing needed. Whatever your age, weight or fitness, you can shape up & help roll back the years, improving posture, developing shape, flattening your tummy, slimming your waist & hips & strengthening your legs.

By Val Sainsbury CABBAGE is a leafy vegetable of the Brassica family, and is round or oval in shape. It consists of soft, light green or whitish inner leaves, covered with harder, dark-green outer ones. It is widely used throughout the world, and can be prepared in a number of ways, but, most commonly, it is included, either cooked or raw, in many types of salad. The health benefits of cabbage include its frequent use as a treatment for constipation, stomach ulcers, headaches, obesity, skin disorders, eczema, jaundice, scurvy, rheumatism, arthritis, gout, eye disorders, heart disease and Alzheimer’s. It is beneficial in curing various other health ailments. Vitamin C deficiency Cabbage is an abundant source of Vitamin C, which is the best of the antioxidants, reducing free radicals in the body that are the fundamental causes of premature ageing. This vitamin also helps in repairing the wear and tear of

the body, through the course of life. Cabbage is actually richer in Vitamin C than oranges. It is very helpful in treating ulcers, certain cancers and depression, and boosts the immune system, defending us against coughs and colds. It can also speed up the healing process for wounds and damaged tissues, regulate the proper functioning of the nervous system, and reduce the effects and presence of Alzheimer’s and other degenerative neural diseases Anti-inflammatory agent Cabbage is known to accumulate a build-up of cadmiumbinding complexes in its leaves, and one of the main components of that is glutamine. Glutamine is a strong anti-inflammatory agent, so consuming cabbage can reduce the effects of many types of inflammation, irritation, allergies, joint pain, fever and various skin disorders. Improves vision Cabbage is a rich source of beta-carotene. Many people, particularly as they get older, turn to cabbage for its ability to prevent macular

degeneration, promote good eye health and delay cataract formation. Improves brain health Cabbage is a very powerful brain food! The presence of Vitamin K and anthocyanins within cabbage can give a strong boost to mental function and concentration. This wrapping is what protects nerves from damage and decay. So consuming Vitamin

K can improve your defence against neural degeneration, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Improves bones Cabbage is a great source of minerals, like calcium, magnesium, and potassium. These three essential minerals are integral in the protection of bones from degradation, and the onset of conditions like osteoporosis and general bone weakening.

Regulates blood pressure The presence of potassium in cabbage also makes it a wonderful way to protect yourself from elevated blood pressure, which increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. Potassium is a vasodilator, which means that it opens up the blood vessels and eases the flow of blood. Reduces muscle aches When certain bacteria ferment the sugars in cabbage during the preparation of sauerkraut, lactic acid is released. It isn't the easiest compound to find in a diet, but it has been shown to reduce muscle soreness and aches. In some small way, cabbage can help

general pain relief and muscle discomfort, depending on how it is prepared. Detoxifies the body Cabbage acts as a good detoxifier, purifying the blood and removing toxins, primarily free radicals and uric acid, which are the main causes of rheumatism, gout, arthritis, kidney stones, skin diseases and eczema. The detoxifying effect of cabbage is due to the high content of Vitamin C and sulfur. Cooked cabbage is how most people get it into their diet, but cooking actually causes a loss of many of the nutrients, particularly the high levels of Vitamin C. The best option is to eat it raw!

Cats Welfare News

Cat facts galore DID you know that cats are one of, if not the, most popular pet in the world? There are, globally, over 500 million domestic cats. They conserve their energy by sleeping for an average of 1314 hours a day, and have teeth and flexible bodies, designed for hunting small animals such as mice and rats. They can be lethal hunters and very sneaky; when they walk, their back paws step almost exactly in the same place as the front paws did beforehand. This keeps noise to a minimum, and limits visible tracks. The heaviest domestic cat on record is 21.297 kilograms (46lbs 15.2 oz). They have powerful night vision, allowing them to see at light levels six times

lower than required by a human. This is why they make such great hunters. Cats love to play, especially kittens who adore play-fighting and chasing toys. Playfighting may be a way for them to practise and learn skills for hunting and fighting. On average, cats live for around 12-15 years. They spend a large amount of time grooming their coats to keep themselves clean. Beautiful Mia Pretty, five-month-old Mia is waiting to be adopted. Remembrance Sunday apology

OUR preview for Remembrance Sunday, in last week’s Canarian Weekly, included an incorrect time for the start of the Royal British Legion’s annual service, at Westhaven Bay, Costa del Silencio. Inadvertently, we said it began at 12.30pm, when, in fact, it took place at its regular time of 10.30am. Apologies to those affected, especially the young service personnel who arrived at Noon, complete with their medals. They were, naturally, extremely unhappy.

or Whatsapp Sharon on 662 52 40 06 (seven days a week 9-6pm), or Sandra (Spanish and German) after 6pm, on 6712 82773. Message us on Facebook, or contact us on our website www.catswelfare-tenerife.com. All cats and kittens go on a week's trial, in your home, so you can be sure you’ve made the right decision. If you adopt two kittens together, kitten injections, micro-chips and neutering is FREE for the second kitten. Adopt a black kitten, or two, and both kittens receive the above treatments, free of charge! Foster carers needed We do not have a refuge, so we urgently need people who are willing to foster kittens who are too young to be adopted, but need a safe place to stay until they are old enough to go to a forever home. Also, cats recovering from surgery, illness or injury need somewhere

Ritmania

Ritmania plans to tap into a record

IF you hear a strange sound, this Sunday morning, coming from The Beer Trap restaurant at the golf club on Golf del Sur, don’t worry!

It’ll be the dancers from the Ritmania Fame Academy, taking part in a Tapathon to raise money for BBC Children In Need, in collaboration with “The Performers Project”. They’ll be attempting to break the record for the most tap dancers performing the same tap routine at the same time, throughout

England and Europe. If successful, they will be added to the Guinness Book of World Records. The Tapathon starts at one o’clock on the dot, and the dancers will be rehearsing from 11.30am. Academy owner, Carla Guest, said: “We’ll be linked to the UK via mobile, on which we have to video our group performing. We bought the Tapathon T-shirts from the UK, with 100% going to Children In Need. “We will also be taking round a bucket at the end of the event for people to donate, which will go to the Helping Hands charity,

here on the island, and help fund our muchneeded ballet barres. We are also organising a raffle.” She added: “It has been great for all our students, and some of the mums, to get involved and learn the routine. Ritmania is passionate about tap dancing, and the kids love it. The thought of maybe breaking a record has been exciting for them, too. “We will have approximately 74 dancers taking part, aged 7-50 something, and there will be a special performance by Ritmania, with a mini-disco afterwards. Everyone is welcome!”

DIVISION 2 RESULTS Team Captian of Legends Elite, Paddy

Elite gang batter Union

By Andy Maughan IT has not been the best of weeks for Union Bar, who

suffered an 11-1 thrashing by Legends Elite at home. Their only win came from Vinny Ines, in the opening frame, which, at least, prevented a whitewash. But his minitriumph also meant that John Willmott was the only Elite player to lose! Scruffy Macs A secured a magnificent 7-5 away win against Legends B, with fatherand-son pair, Julian and Martin Young, the stars. They won five of the seven games required to take all three points.

Legends A’s new signings settled in quickly with a 7-5 away defeat of Scruffy Boys, and, on another excellent night of pool, Jambo won his three games. Bar Leones will be playing all their games away for the next few weeks because the bar, which is under new management, is closing to be refurbished. And the team were soon in the groove for playing away, chalking up a superb 9-3 win at The Hunters.

Running

Fife flyer Sheena a ray of sunshine ON a day of shattered records, the Brits made their mark in last Sunday’s Santa Cruz Marathon, especially Scotland’s Sheena Logan, from Fife Athletic Club. She finished sixth in the 42km main event, and was top lady on the day, with a tremendous time of 3hr 1min 9secs. The fastest runner on the day, and overall marathon winner, was Cristobal Ortigosa Pareja, in 2hrs 27mins 42secs, followed by Julio Rey ( 2.43.08). There were other notable achievements, from Ashley Middlewick, of Reading Roadrunners, in 12th place,

and Sonka Reimers, of Beeston Athletic Club, 14th. The demand for places in the 8km, 21km and 42km categories outstripped all previous years, with 3,500 people pounding the streets of the capital. Runners, who came from 55 countries, swarmed around the city centre, then out to Las Teresitas and back. For Sheena, it was the culmination of lots of hard work. “I came here to be in the marathon as we wanted to take a family holiday to the sun in November, so Tenerife was a good idea,” she said. “When I had my two sons (three years old, and 10 months), I returned to racing quite quickly after each one. For the past

four years, I have raced up to half-marathons but not the full distance. My best time was 2hrs 55mins in 2013, before I had my first son. It is a challenging distance, so I wanted to be ready. But having trained for so many half-marathons and shorter distances, I decided to give Tenerife a go on the training I had. “Usually, I would prefer to do a lot more 20-mile training runs. But I really enjoyed the event, and took a great lift from the support, which was fantastic.” Sheena added: “It was a novelty to have a TV motorbike with me from 14 miles, when I overtook Sonka, so I made the most of the experience and kept smiling (I think!).”

Back in the groove CD Tenerife 2 Cultural Leonesa 0 By Colin Kirby

CD Tenerife review

LINGERING at the turnstiles was not a good idea last Saturday, because an explosive start saw the ball hit the back of the net twice in the first minute, as Tenerife returned to winning ways.

The visitors caught Tenerife cold, and a deep, crossfield pass was headed down by Señe to Rodri, who netted, only for the goal to be ruled offside. Immediately, it was Tenerife’s turn to show they were no slouches, Juan Carlos taking the ball to the byline from the left, and tucking it back for Malbasic to bury it in the goal. Captain Suso, recalled to the starting line-up, then raced down the right after 10 minutes and into the box, where the keeper brought him down and a penalty was given. Suso stepped up and hit his kick straight at the keeper, who parried the ball. But Longo responded sharply, and popped the ball in at the post for a 2-0 lead. Position

It was a tough act to follow, and, though Leonesa were shocked, they still demonstrated that they had come to play football. It was such a refreshing change from those stonewall merchants, who just want to strangle the game. Tenerife’s full-backs were not at their best, particularly Luis Perez, and Leonesa attacked with flair. Buendia, who was buzzing for them, Points

kept popping up on both sides of the pitch. Longo matched him for effort and persistence, and, though he didn’t receive the support he deserved, he never lost faith. Dani had to be on his toes to race out and take the ball off Rodri, while Carlos Ruiz was as solid as ever in the centre of defence. Buendia set Guarrotxena up for a shot, but it was too straight to beat Lost

Dani, and a header from former West Brom player Zuiverloon was dealt with easily by the keeper. But after a bright opening half, Tenerife slipped back into some of their bad habits, and plucky Leonesa continued to chase the game. Rodri kept Dani busy, and there was concern that if they scored once, they would be capable of adding more. The 12,555 crowd were

pleased to see Juan Villar come on for Malbasic, and he added a touch of class in the home attack. He had the beating of the Leonesa defence, and set up Longo for a shot that went wide. Hopefully, coach Pep Marti will soon feel confident enough to play injuryprone Villar for the full 90 minutes. The ref deserved credit for trying to let the game flow, and it certainly encouraged the more expressive players, like Juan Carlos, who saw a neat header to Longo go close. Another ex-West-Brom player, Bouy, took to the field for Leonesa and was soon in action, his foul on Juan Villar provoking a hopeful penalty shout. Tayron arrived from the bench for Juan Carlos with just a few minutes on the clock, as the tireless Longo pushed his aching muscles in the dying embers of the game. It wasn’t the most convincing win for Tenerife, but it was the most welcome, boosting them to seventh in the league. Football can be extremely fickle, and, in 90 minutes, talk changed from Tenerife’s five straight draws, to them being unbeaten in seven games. But a stern test awaits them tomorrow (Saturday), when they travel to bangin-form Second Division leaders Huesca for a 5pm kick-off.

EXTRA-TIME

WRESTLING: Canarian wrestling is a thriving tradition, in which large fighters compete in a sand circle. It has been compared with Japanese Sumo or even Indian Kabbadi. But 13 Tenerife fighters will be testing their skills in South Korea. The Korean Open Sisireum Festival is dedicated to their own local wrestling tradition, and the Tenerife contingency are honoured guests from tomorrow (Saturday) until 29th November. GOLF: The Tenerife Scottish Open, at Amarilla Golf Club, exceeded the organiser’s expectations by raising 4,200 euros for the charity FACT (Fighting Against Cancer Tenerife). Plans are already being hatched for next year’s 20th competition. Take a bow, organiser Alex Love and the 52 players, who made this year such a success. SHOW-JUMPING: Oh the grace, the elegance, and the power. Show-jumping has the lot, and this weekend there will be plenty of horse-mounted action at Buzanada equestrian centre, in Arona. It starts at 3pm today (Friday) and continues through Saturday and Sunday, from 11am. Entry is free. You don’t need to recall the glory days of Harvey Smith and the Horse of the Year show; simply enjoy local-based riders testing themselves over a range of jumps. The Centro Hipico del Sur is in Buzanada’s Camino Los Migueles, up from Guaza roundabout.

The Pub sink all eight! THE Pub welcomed Sundowners with open arms, but that was where the generosity ended as the ruthless home team won 8-0, despite some really close games. The Tavern A travelled to Loch-In, on the bottom square in San Blas, and, after close singles games, the home side proved stronger in the team game, earning a 6-2 home win.

Is it, or isn’t it? That was the question as Waterfall found themselves nearing their first win of the campaign, but Emerald Lounge came through in the trebles for a 4-4 draw. Top-class darts from Daddy Cool, with three perfect 180s, plus one from Walter, paved the way for a 6-2 win for Pas O Nadas A over Spear Chuckers. There was another close game, with Gaffers inflicting a rare defeat over Boothen, who were not up to their usual high standards. Gaffers pinched the

Tough defeat will be spur

Ready for League leaders Valencia 2 Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife 0

ARONA Tenerife Sur fought all the way, before going down in the deciding set for a 3-2 defeat at Cajasol Juvasa Voley last week. Yet they were never overwhelmed. Each set was a real battle, as they came back from a 25-19 opening loss to take the next sets 27-25 and 25-18.

But Juvasa edged the fourth set 27-25 to set up a thrilling decider, which they took 15-12. That still leaves Arona sitting seventh in the 12team Superliga, and they are learning all the time in Spain’s top division. Tomorrow (Saturday), they have a home game against Haro Rioja Voley, from northern Spain, at the Los Cristianos sports hall, by the outdoor swimming complex, at 6pm.

IT was not a good day for Tenerife at Valencia last Sunday, because the hosts halted their progress in Spain’s Premier League.

An unfortunate first half saw Valencia go ahead through Esther after 19 minutes, and an own-goal on 36 minutes left Tenerife with too much to do. American Jackie Simpson put the ball in her own net, after making a late lunge to stop a Valencia shot. But, like her team-mates, she is still upbeat because Tenerife’s improved performances have taken

them up to seventh in the League. This Sunday should feature a cracking game for Tenerife, who entertain leaders Barcelona in San Isidro, kicking-off at noon. Goals have been a little

hard to come by lately for the home side. But they have plenty of attacking flair, and they are aware that they must raise their game if they are to knock Barcelona off their perch.

What a shambles! THE hardest damage to take in football is, obviously, selfinflicted, and though the La Palma side were impressive, Marino were extremely poor, as the scoreline shows. Warning signs are now flashing as Marino have fallen to 12th in their Tercera Division group. Mauri tormented the Blues all game. Petar did well to save from him, low at the post, in the second minute, but the warning went unheeded. Nami hooked a good chance over the bar for the home team, which was a brief respite from Tenisca´s next effort - a floated cross from Pitti to Adib, whose header missed. But he would be back for much more. The danger-men combined for the opening goal after 13 minutes: Pitti to Mauri, to Adib… and a crisp header into the home net. Four minutes later, Yarek had a clear shot that eluded a diving Petar to make it 2-0. The main problem was a puzzling, right-sided formation for Marino. Kevin Castro has performed well at right-back. But he kept playing nearer the centre, so close to Tato that he could have been his shadow, and the central defender was, clearly, unhappy. That left Mauri acres of

room to exploit, and he wouldn’t have seen more space had he joined NASA. Further upfield, goal-scoring forward Nami was mostly wide on the right wing. Another free run for Mauri saw him face to face with Marino keeper Petar, and the forward put the ball between his legs for a perfect nutmeg, and into the net. So, 3-0 with just 20 minutes gone. Marino tried to rally and

Zeben headed down a shot, but keeper Aaron took it easily. Soon after that, another shot missed the target, as the better-placed Fran Delgado awaited a pass. Zeben tested the Tenisca keeper as his free-kick beat the wall. But, again, it was just a minor irritation for the visitors. Tenisca were welldrilled and tweaked their tactics, with Mauri veering into the centre, and full-back

Cristofer taking his wing slot for a while. And Mauri wasn’t out of the spotlight for long. He beat two Marino defenders and put in a low cross, which was cleared by Tato for a corner. Just before half-time, Petar came running out to clear a Tenisca attack, but Adjib leapt and got there first for a powerful header to give the visitors a 4-0 lead. The air in the Marino dressing

room must have been as blue as their shirts, and a change greeted their return. Bolivian midfielder Ricky Vaca took over from Ghana´s Dadzie Prince, and added a bit of bite. Pedro responded with a shot at the keeper, and Fran Delgado provided a right cross that went a fraction wide from Zeben. Toñeca skied a shot in front of goal, and then made the keeper work for a low save in what was Marino’s best spell. A series of corners pinned Tenisca down, and the pressure paid off when Pedro headed home to reduce the arrears. But the relief didn’t last, because a defensive error from Fran let Mauri in for the fifth goal. Even a double substitution couldn’t rescue Marino. Rodrigo and Juanma replaced Toñeca and Nami, adding some bulk to the attack. but Tenisca were cruising. Rodrigo had a couple of decent chances, but, even though Tenisca had subbed star men Mauri and Adib, they had plenty of quality to keep driving forward. Castro came closest with a long, speculative shot, but a well-beaten Marino went off to ponder a miserable home defeat.

Golden-oldies still dazzle

Basketball

Champs’ ups and downs SECOND place in their European Champions League group is just reward for another great away victory for Iberostar Tenerife. The venue on Wednesday night was in France, the opponents Elan Chalon… and a comfortable 73-61 win kept the pot bubbling for the reigning champions. Quarter scores of 18-22, 7-11, 15-25 and 21-15 were enough to see off the French resistance, and captain Nico

Richotti added another chapter to the record books. After breaking the clubappearance total recently, he recorded his 250th game by top-scoring with 15 points. There was also a good debut from injury-cover recruit Pedro Llompart, who weighed in with six points. But Tenerife, thumped 33-21 in the final quarter, were left licking their wounds after going

down 89-77 at Zaragoza. Until that point, they had held on well and were poised to take the match. But once it started slipping away from them, they couldn’t stop Zaragoza´s momentum. The game opened with quarter scores of 16-17, 16-23, and 24-16 and Tenerife had the dominant player in Mateusz Ponitka, his 22 points deserving to belong to a winning team.

THE 2017 Soccer Experience Veterans’ tournament, which featured several golden-oldie professionals, provided another fantastic weekend of fun, families and football. The event was supported by Adeje Sports Department, and games were played over two days at Adeje’s Las Torres Pavilion. As usual, competition was fierce,

with local players mounting stiff challenges to the former Football League players. Nayim, who played for Bacelona and Tottenham Hotspur in central-midfield in his heyday, appeared for Royale International. But Nottingham Forest Mobsters ruled the roost, winning both the Over-35 and Over-45 finals.
