YouTube vision is key to the perfect holiday here
THE Tenerife government is going flat-out to entice UK holidaymakers, with the help of a new YouTube site. Those who want a taste of the Island, or want to recall their happy memories here, can now do so on the site, which has been specifically created for them. The series of destination
videos has been commissioned by the Tenerife Tourism Corporation. It is designed to illustrate Tenerife’s surprising diversity, and focuses on aspects of the Island not generally wellknown to Brits. Tenerife Tourism Minister Jose Manuel Bermudez, who is also Vice-President of the Cabildo, says: “The internet is an important place to research travel, so we are keen to ensure that Tenerife’s

Tourists figures on the rise, especially in the 5star sector Police battling to halt a wave of petty crimes TENERIFE has seen a surprise rise in petty theft over the last fortnight, the police have confirmed.
TENERIFE’S upmarket hotels attracted more than 10% extra visitors in July against the corresponding month last year. In fact, there was another ray of sunshine all round for the Island this week when overall figures released by the Government’s Research Department of Tourism for that period rose by nearly 9% to 450 554, in comparison with last July. It is no coincidence that the
euro against the pound has risen by some 15% from the same period last year. That, in effect, means that hotels are that much cheaper now for British holiday-makers. And the news is even better for Tenerife when measured against the Icelandic ash-cloud controversy earlier in the year, which caused havoc in the airline industry for weeks and dissuaded many people from travelling abroad. Add that to the recent threat of strikes by airline crews, which would again have put people off flying,

and the tourism figures look even rosier. Happily, those disputes were either settled recently, or put aside until the autumn, which means we should be able to look forward to even better figures for August. The hotel trade improved by 2.89% to 262,789 tourists, while the other sectors enjoyed an increase of 5.02%, attracting 187 765 visitors. In the main holiday-maker areas, the south accounted for 364 189 visitors - 7.14% more than last year - with the

north hosting 72 923, representing an 8.70% decrease. Overall, for the first seven months of 2010, Tenerife recorded a total of 2,765,488 tourists, which is an improvement of 1.35% on that period last year. Of great importance was the fact that Britain and Germany, the two main markets, had increases of 14.79% and 9.31% respectively. Other countries, especially France (up 37.42%), Russia (26%), Italy (9.85%) and Belgium (9.38%), also made big contributions to the tourism growth. Distribution audited and certified by
National Police, Guardia Civil and Local Police have all seen a steady rise in the number of crimes being reported. Most of the reports cover property crime, mainly robberies, and some of them have taken place while people have been sleeping in their homes, which has caused police the most concern. There has also been a marked increase in vehicle theft. Last week, various police forces made a number of arrests, and one day alone saw 13 people arrested in just 24 hours. Despite this, the number of thefts committed daily has continued to soar. The Arico area, in Abades, has been badly hit. The small settlement on the east coast, has been targeted by thieves and residents are understandably worried. According to preliminary forensic investigations, a
band of young children have robbed 12 houses in just ten days, and even more alarming is that all the robberies were committed in the same street. The last thefts took place at dawn last Wednesday, when intruders entered a home and left with a stash of jewels and money. The offenders ransacked all the rooms in the house, left cabinet doors open, destroyed mattresses, emptied drawers and scattered the owners’ belongings across the floor. They even taunted the police by leaving a note on the kitchen table that read: “Look and see what we do.” Special Guardia Civil agents are investigating these crimes, but no arrests have so far been made. Police sources indicate that they believe the chief cause of this crimewave is the economic crisis, which has left many people unemployed. They believe it has also led to a “drop in the black money that had been circulating in the streets.”

She will be resting her hardworked bones after a busy summer editing this fine weekly paper. A week in Bristol is a fine decision. Leaving me to look after the paper... Well that's for you to judge. So there I was on Thursday afternoon going through the pages happy as Larry when I stumbled across Joe Ferguson's column on page 36. Who is that guy holding a baby as though it's a bomb? Then it hit me. It's me! Cheeky git. He swore on his life that he would never, ever show anyone that pic. I will get him back for that. But with my editor’s hat on, I wondered if anyone would realise it was actually
me? The joy of working in radio is the fact that on the whole you remain anonymous. Radio stars can walk down the street safe in the knowledge that they will only get the looks from the public if we open our mouths. But the problem with 'that' baby picture is it's clearly me. I cannot blag it and deny by saying it's someone else. I look like nobody else! I am unique. Joe looks like a million people including Kif from Futurama for example. I look like....grr! Maybe it's just me. For example one of our dj's Dave Tappin. He is going through another one of his mid-life crisis. He has recently dyed his hair blonde, got it nicely gelled up and is ready for action. The problem is, as the pictures on this page show, he looks like local entertainment legend Paul Stone. Or The Academy Bar owner Mark. So bring it on. Yes, that's me holding a baby. No it isn't mine. Yes I look terrified. And no I'm not getting broody. Enjoy the issue...

captain Marc Bertran made an offering of a bouquet of flowers. Club President Miguel Concepción said: “This
visit is always very important to us. It helps us leave with a winning mentality - and with luck.”
We want a beach for our dogs to walk on IT’S not just the British who are dog lovers, and a major campaign in the Island’s capital proves this. More than 3,000 Santa Cruz residents have signed a petition aimed at forcing the authorities to create a dogfriendly beach. At the moment, there are no official recreation facilities for dogwalkers in Tenerife. Since the campaign launched in May, organiser Abigail Perez has collected thousands of signatures. They hope to be able to turn the beach behind
Parque Marítimo in Santa Cruz into one where owners can walk their pets without risk of a fine. Abigail, spokesperson for the group Dog Owners of Santa Cruz, said: “Our intention is to enjoy a stroll on the beach with our animals. Nowhere in the Canary Islands is there a beach where we can enjoy this. “We understand the issues raised by bathers, but all we are asking for is one safe area. We have chosen the Parque Marítimo Beach because it is now virtually obsolete, and of no obvious interest to sunbathers.” The campaign has snow-
balled in the last few weeks, and many supporters do not own dogs. It’s an historic campaign and Abigail added: “Nobody has tried to get these rights before. Sometimes, many owners are forced to go with their animals at night or early morning to enjoy walks on the beach, and we are fined for doing it. “It seems so unfair. Our dogs are fully trained, wormed and vaccinated and have all the documentation required to make them legal. All their droppings are collected in plastic bags on the beach. We are careful” Next Wednesday (1st Sept),

Livia Bernardi, a professional dog trainer, said there were many benefits from beach walking: “There are lots of positives for dogs being on the sands,” he added. “As well as the dog enjoying a different environment, it would be so much fun for the pet. “People forget that dogs are essentially children in behaviour. They enjoy the beach as much as a child does, and can interact with other animals. It becomes an enriching experience for them.”

THE crowning of the 15th Miss Norte takes place tonight (Friday) at La Victoria, in the north. The well-established beauty pageant is one of the highlights of the social calender in tha part of the Island, and
LOS CRISTIANOS harbour was rocking last weekend as the extremely popular Noche de Boleros concert wowed the masses. The annual event goes from strength to strength, and it is a real example of what the south of the island can do when all the local authorities work together.
The organisation was excellent for the free concert, which ran on both Friday and Saturday. There was hardly a free seat, and hundreds sat on the beach to catch a glimpse of the two-hour event. Full credit must go to the excellent musical ensemble. They were magnificent support for the vocalists, who are all from the Canary Islands. They included: José Manuel Ramos, Chago Melian, Sergio
this year’s competition is being billed as the best yet. There are 20 finalists competing for the title, and the event is being broadcast live on local television. Last year, nearly 200,000 people watched on TV as Talia María Delgado was crowned Miss Norte 2009.
Nunez, Nauzet (pictured), Pepe Barrios, Beatriz Alonso, Alexis Miranda, María José Chamber, Alma de Bolero and 15-year-old Alba, who was amazing. The event was organised by the Association of ‘Shirelles XXI’, and the collaboration of the Municipality of Arona, through the Board of Culture, Tenerife Cabildo and the Port Authority. It will definitely be back next year to delight the Los Cristianos crowd again..
Help! We’ll all be sweltering again! TENERIFE faces another boiling hot weekend, with temperatures up to 100f, and the Island has been placed on a Yellow Alert by the Meteorological Agency.

After relegation from La Liga last season, the club were hoping to sell around 8,000 tickets - but the response has been breathtaking. Delighted club president Miguel Concepcion said: “This goes to show how great our fans are. It’s a great number and we
hope to get some more.” As you can read in our full preview on page 47, Tenerife’s first home match is not until next Sunday (5th September), when they host Salamanca, so the sale of a few thousand more is not inconceivable. Tenerife’s early sales make
them the third best-supported club in the division, behind sleeping giants Real Betis and Recreativo Huelva. Tenerife are expected to mount a serious challenge for promotion after making some big-name signings this summer.
Up to 1,500 people, gathered in Benirras for a sunset party, were evacuated by boat and overland last Sunday evening as they risked being stranded by the blaze. Every firefighter on the island was mobilised, and reinforcements were drafted in from the neighbouring island of Majorca as the blaze moved towards the pine forest surrounding the beach, spreading to the car park on Sunday and setting alight dozens of vehicles. Several of those evacuated had light injuries, including smoke inhalation, burns and panic attacks.
Benirras beach, a secluded bay in the north of the Spanish island, is popular with celebrity holiday-makers, and has hosted Kate Moss, Sadie Frost and Sienna Miller. Londoner Patti Smith fled by sea with her husband and young daugher and son,, six and three respectively. “It was pandemonium and we could hardly breathe,” she said. “But we managed to get out on one of the boats moored offshore.” Rob Saunders, a 26-yearold from Brighton, said: “There was smoke and ash everywhere. Cars near the beach were gutted, and there were bangs as tyres expolode d in the heat of the flames.” Local reports suggest the blazde was sparked by a barbecue, which got out of control in he pine trees. Two pople needed tratement for smoke inhalation and burns.

Any tomato sauce left? A SQUELCHING time was had by all on Wednesday at the annual La Tomatina festival in Buñol, a town in the Valencia region. If you took part in the incredible event, you will definitely have been squashed or squelched because tens of metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes some 150,000 weighing around 90,000lbs - were hurled in the streets in one hour of madness.. The Tomatina takes place on the last Wednesday of August each year, and supporters travel from all over the world to take part in what must be regarded as the most unusual fiesta of all. It forms part of a weeklong festival featuring music, parades, dancing, and fireworks and on the eve of the great tomato bash, participants of the festival compete in a paella-cooking contest. This fantasic festival, designed to give everyone the pip, started in a casual way in 1945 but wasn’t recognised officially until 1952. Between 20,000 and 50,000 tourists from all over the globe either return to continue “hostilities” each year, or are first-timers, bidding to find out more about the great tomato fight. Buñol’s population is just over 9,000, which means there is limited accommodation for tourists. The town can squash so many in, but most participants stay in Valencia and travel by bus or train to Buñol, about 38km outside the city. In preparation for the almighty mess to come, shopkeepers use huge plastic covers on their shop fronts to protect them. No one really knows how the event originated, but possible theories include a local food fight among friends which got out of hand, a volley of tomatoes from bystanders at a carnival parade, a practical joke on a bad musician, and even the aftermath of an accidental lorry spillage.
New pizza burger is a real mouthful IT seems our tastes are always changing, and the major food chains are always looking for new ideas. But this is more like a merger, as Burger King have confirmed they will be trialling a new product at their flagship New York outlet in Times Square. The brand new Pizza Burger, comprising beef burger, pepperoni, mozzarella, pesto and marinara sauce, will be launched next month,
It will be about the size of four Burger King Whoppers and will be served sliced into six pieces to resemble a pizza. John Schaufelberger, Burger King’s vice president of global marketing, said the meal was intended as a homage to New York. “It’s designed to be shared,” he added. “It demonstrates the type of menu offerings our customers can expect.” The Pizza Burger will cost $13 (10.31 euros, £8.44) and, if successful, could be sold around the world.
Paris, my love?
THERE was more good news for the Tenerife travel industry this week when Spanish airline Air Europa included flights to Paris in their winter schedules. From November, they will be starting a direct service to Orly airport from the South airport (Reina Sofia). The new route will see two weekly flights, on Thursdays and Sundays, which will be serviced by Air Europa’s fleet of 189-seat Boeing 737-800s.

We are known in the French market and wellregarded by both the public and the tourism sector as a member of Sky Team alliance, which is also Air France.”

A blistering feat of feet!
FUND-RAISERS at Thomas Cook’s Holiday Division office, in Playa de Las America, completed their 12km walk for the company’s Children’s Charity on Monday - with a little help from their friends. Staff from PAL (pure authentic lambs wool blanket trip) joined them on the stroll
along the front, from Arona Gran Hotel in Los Cristianos to the Costa Adeje Palace, in La Caleta. In all, the walkers raised a grand total of over 320 euros for the kids, and completed the course much quicker than expected. Rebecca Bennett, of Thomas Cook, said: “We started just after 5pm and expected to arrive around 7.30pm. But some of the walkers finished in 1hr 30mins and the rest of us 27 minutes later.
“We all had sore feet afterwards, and some of us were suffering with blisters the next day. But our ‘slowmotion’ run was worth it and we are all really pleased with the result.” The gallant foot-sloggers who gave up their time for the charity were: Thomas Cook - Rebecca Bennett, Marie Fowler, Sean Edwards, Kassy Lissenden and Sara Hook; PAL - Jayne Carfoot, Kat Thomson, Jeanette Whittington, Sarah Mawby and Ally Morris.
Schools are spruced up around the clock
ALMOST every school in Santiago del Teide is being spruced up by the Town Hall ahead of the new academic year. The funding is coming from the Department of Education and Work, and

work is going on around the clock following a late decision to make the upgrades. It was sanctioned only after members of the school councils met with the management teams of different schools in order to identify areas that needed work. It is a large job, and the work includes the installation of
security fencing and patios, and extra wall conditioning. Inside, extensive painting and polishing will be carried out, while many schools will have replacement flooring, an electrical overhaul, and a full plumbing review. Work is also being carried out on school sports fields and locker rooms.

Brit is Clean as a whistle! Boozed-up found oar-struck Cabildo beach campaign shifts 815lbs of rubbish
in a stolen boat A BOOZED-UP Briton was rescued at sea after trying to row from Minorca to Mallorca in a stolen dinghy. He spent nearly 24 hours drifting without food and water after stealing the inflatable Zodiac from outside a restaurant in the port of Ciutadella on the west of the island. A fisherman spotted 20year-old Zirian Kamarin Tahirli sunbathing eight miles out to sea, using a sail made from an oar and a piece of cloth. He begged to be left alone, saying in broken Spanish that he was heading to Mallorca to visit a friend. Coastguards rescued him after the fisherman told police he suspected the boat was stolen from a Spanish couple who had moored in
A HUGE gang of volunteers removed 370 kilos (815lbs) of rubbish from the coast and sea bed at Candelaria last Saturday. It was the second operation instigated by the Cabildo in its great sea and beach clean-up campaign, and the third “La mar de limpia 2010” will take place next week. The 150-strong group picked the coast clean of litter and garbage weighing70 kilos (154lbs), while divers from Quimera Sub collected 300 kilos (661lbs)of rubbish from the sea bed. And, thanks to the work carried out by the Fundación Neotrópico and the Cabildo’s Centro de Recuperación de Fauna Silvestre La Tahonilla, some sea turtles were released into the wild. A variety of children’s
workshops themed on the environment were also staged during the day. In addition, there was a display by the Town & Country Planning Department’s Gestos por el Paisaje, a campaign which aims to raise public awareness about the need to cherish our Island. The La mar de limpia campaign is being staged to make locals and visitors aware of the importance of protecting and conserving our marine

biodiversity, as well as helping to conserve the sea. Another goal is to give fishermen a nudge to make them more sensitive to the issue of sustaining a healthy marine ecosystem. The campaign’s main aim is not just to collect rubbísh, but also to raise awareness and create better habits concerning the problem of pollution, which affects the beaches and the coast, and to help preserve our marine
biodiversity. Ciutadella for lunch. A spokesman for the rescue service said: “He was lucky he was spotted. The winds were changing, and without food and water, he could have come to a very sticky end.” Fisherman Josep Anglada said: “The Zodiac was stolen around lunchtime last Thursday and I spotted it at 11.30 the following morning. “At first, I couldn’t see anyone in it but then my son saw an ankle poking up over the side and then a man laying down inside, sunbathing with just a pair of shorts on. “He looked very disorientated and he’d put himself in a very dangerous situation.” A worker at the marine club in Ciutadella, said: “We’ve heard the man had a few too many drinks at lunchtime, saw the mountains of Mallorca and decided to take someone else’s boat to get him there.”
Barcelona has bite of Apple SPAIN has its first Apple shop, following months of speculation, and it will open in Barcelona next month. Until now, Apple had operated on the mainland only,
through authorised dealerships such as K-tuin, FNAC and department store El Corte Ingles. The US technology giant is opening a huge shop in the La Maquinista shopping mall, and it hoped that another Apple store will follow in Madrid in the next few months.

Tenerife trip tempts Inga
ONE of the world’s best-ever swimmers could be making a return to the pool, thanks to her extended stay in Santa Cruz. Inge de Bruijn was in the capital recently as coach to the Netherlands swimming team, ahead of the European Championships in Hungary. It is believed that her spell working with the swimmers has given her the zest to make a return to action. De Bruijn won three gold medals at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, in the 50m and 100m freestyle, plus the 100m butterfly, smashing the world record in each event. She won gold again in 2004 in the 50m freestyle before retiring in 2007. Since then,

she has been busy modelling and doing media work, before helping out the Dutch team in Santa Cruz. Her expertise was praised by the squad and she is seriously considering coming back. “Swimming is so contagious,” she said. “I enjoyed the training camp and I definitely have the itch back. “The standard is much better now than when I was last in the pool. But the experts say I can still do it at the highest level, so maybe.” The obvious comeback target for de Bruijin would be the London Olympics in 2012, but she will have to reveal her hand very soon. Under swimming rules, anyone making a comeback has to give a year’s notice so that he/she can be drug-tested in training and out of competition.
TENERIFE Rural Federation’s recent Honey Tour to Teide National Park was so successful that similar walking excursions are in the pipeline. The “Bee’s Eye View of Teide”, which attracted 40 people, was staged in association with the Teide National Park and Tenerife’s Casa de la Miel (Honey Centre in El Sauzal), run by the Cabildo. tour of the history of the flora and scenery linked to honey production. They also got to know the hives, which produce a variety of honey that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The hikers took the route called Volcán de Fasnia, which leads to the observatory at Izaña, and descended to the National Park’s Visitors Centro Centre to see the red Tajinastes in bloom. Honey made from Teide Broom is produced in late spring and early summer, and the hives are up in the mountains, over 1,500 metres
above sea level, a habitat which is unique in the world. Tenerife honey is a very light amber colour with slightly golden shades. It takes a long time to crystalise and has a delicate plant scent.. José Joaquín Bethencourt, Island Councillor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, said: “The tour is very interesting. You learn all about the intensive work the Island’s beekeepers have been doing for centuries, which has resulted in local honey varieties that boast extraordinary quality.” Tenerife Rural Federation is funded by the Cabildo.

Mars attacks the healthy food market
CONFECTIONERY group Mars says it is certain the new, lower-fat versions of its iconic chocolate bars will go down a treat with consumers. The company will launch Mars, Snickers, Milky Way and Topic bars containing 15% less saturated fat than their previous recipes, next month. The company said it had taken ÂŁ9m and five years to
achieve its "technical breakthrough". It said the result was a lower-fat product it claimed tasted exactly the same as the original. Fiona Dawson, managing director of Mars Chocolate UK, told Sky News: "We've got every confidence consumers will love the new Mars - we've got every confidence it's going to continue being the best-selling bar in the future. "With a product like Mars they don't have to buy it every day - they don't have to buy it at all if they don't
want to - so giving them the taste they want is absolutely imperative to us." The move follows new guidelines from the Food Standards Agency earlier this year recommending manufacturers reduce the saturated fat in chocolate confectionery by at least 10% by the end of 2012. Mars said the new range will remove more than 600 tons of saturated fat a year from the UK diet - but accepted that it was still a long way from representing a healthy option.

It beggars belief about this bewitching Bugatti A HUGE fuss was made last week about the sale of a rare Bugatti Type 51, which was expected to be auctioned off for a record $4.5 million (3.4m euros). Unfortunately for the mystery English seller, the bidding reached only $2.7m, so the Grand Prix racer, one of the finest specimens of the Type 51 remaining, was withdrawn. It must be a sign of the times because the private collector, who had set a world record two years ago when his Type 35 Bugatti was sold for a whopping $3.9 million (3m euros), was confident his Bugatti would top that figure easily. And so were officials at the famed RM Auctions in a spectacular sale of classic cars at Monterey, California. Curiously, for the all the preauction fuss, there was not a word to be read about the Bugatti for days, until I found out about the no-sale in the Bugatti Page, a splendid website devoted to the renowned car-maker, celebrating a cen-
tury in the business but now owned by Volkswagon. Historian David Sewell seemed in no doubt about the Type 51, noting that it was a “remarkably complete and original car and that there was no doubt to its authenticity”. It even has the original bodywork. The vintage car raced in 17 European Grands Prix, fitted with a 185 hp, 2,262 cc DOHC super-charged inline eightcylinder engine, Zenith carburetor, four-speed manual transmission, front semi-elliptic springs, rear quarter-elliptic inverted springs, live axle and four-wheel mechanical brakes. As if we weren’t aware of those facts anyway!
Along with other alternative investments, the collector car market has been boosted over the past 18 months as the wealthy move towards more tangible assets in the wake of the credit crunch. The last time a Bugatti Type 51 came to auction, in 2001, it made in excess of £1m, so expectations were high. Dan Warrener, car specialist at RM Auctions, said beforehand: “Rare collector cars, like fine art, have increased in value dramatically in the past decade. “Many price records have been broken in the past two years, while more traditional investments have gone down.” Not this time, buster!
The Facebook murder riddle
A TOWN has been thrown into panic after three teenagers named on a Facebook hit list were murdered in the past 10 days. Police are investigating the deaths in Puerto Asis, Colombia, after the list appeared on the web warning 69 boys to leave the area in three days or be executed. Officers at first thought it was a hoax until they discovered two youths, who had been shot dead two days earlier, were on the list. Diego Jaramillo, 16, and Eibart Munoz, 17, were gunned down while travelling on a motorbike between Puerto Asis and the nearby town of Puerto Caicedo.
Another name was Norbey Vargas, 19, who was killed five days later. More anonymous threats have appeared on leaflets flyposted on cars in the town. “Please, as relatives, ask them to leave town in less than three days, or we’ll see ourselves forced to carry out more acts,” it read. Another list was published on Facebook on Monday, this time naming 31 girls in the town. Detectives have brought in internet experts from the Colombian capital Bogota to help them track down the killers. There is speculation that a criminal gang known as Los Rastrojos as well as Marxist guerrilla group FARC may be involved.
Mr Perez said Los Rastrojos had stepped up operations in the area. He said the gang was known for “intimidating and meting punishment against...drug sellers and consumers, sex workers, people with criminal and unlawful histories, and threatening social leaders, business people and taxi drivers.” Local official Andres Gerardo Verdugo said there is “panic and anxiety” in the town, with reports that some families have already fled. Some have taken to Twitter to voice their concerns. “Panic in Puerto Asis, Putumayo, because of threats against young people,” said a blogger called JuanSepulvedah. “Our youth must be protected.”
Nine kids dead in Schoolbus tragedy NINE CHILDREN have been killed after a minibus driver taking pupils to school swerved around a closed railway crossing gate into an oncoming train. Grieving families cried at the scene as they stood near the completely destroyed van. It is thought 13 children aged between eight and 11 were on the school run through the Blackheath area of Cape Town. Police are investigating a case of murder against the

van driver, Cape Town police confirmed. He was taken to hospital in a serious condition. Two of the injured children had to be cut from the wreckage, said emergency ER24 spokesman Andre Visser. “When (rescue workers) arrived it was chaos,” he said. An investigation showed all precautionary measures were correctly in place at the crossing, railway officials said. “The crossing is protected by road signs, flashing lights and booms, which were confirmed to be in working order,” the officials said in a
statement. “Preliminary indications point towards possible negligent vehicle driver behaviour at the crossing point.” There were no reports of injuries among those on the train. President Jacob Zuma and Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele, who are currently on a state visit to China, conveyed their condolences to the families of the children. South Africa’s privately owned minibus taxi industry provides the bulk of public transport in the country but is plagued by poor driving and safety standards.

Lorry driver is held over sex attack
A SCOTTISH lorry driver has been arrested in Romania accused of sexually assaulting young boys. James Connor was held on Sunday after police had searched for a missing nine year-old boy. The youngster was found in the back of a truck being driven by Connor, along with another child. Romanian police say Connor filmed himself abusing the children. Connor, who is 33, is
accused of luring youngsters into his lorry with offers of chocolate and sweets. According to reports up to ten children aged between nine and 13 could be involved. Connor was driving in Romania for Ross International Haulage, who are based in Bellshill in Lanarkshire, the paper said. Police sources claim he spent four days preying on boys in the area between the towns of Brasov and Vaslui. Connor has appeared in court and is being held in custody while a police investigation continues.
Most-wanted fugative is held in Spain ONE OF Britain’s most wanted men has been arrested by Spanish police after a fouryear manhunt. James Tomkins was located in Marbella, on the southern coast, by officers working on behalf of the Met Police. The 61-year-old is suspected of being involved in a drive-by shooting in May 2006. Rocky Dawson, 24, was killed outside his parents’ home in Hornchurch, Essex, after a gunman drove past and opened fire. Mr Dawson, who had been putting his two children into his car at the time of the attack, died shortly after in
the arms of his mother. A Met Police spokesman said Tomkins will appear in a Madrid court when extradition proceedings will begin. Contract killer Christopher Pearman, of Waltham Abbey, was jailed for life in January 2007 after pleading guilty to the murder of Mr Dawson. Police allege Tomkins drove the stolen Land Rover Freelander used in the shooting and helped to destroy evidence. At one point, investigators suspected he was in Puerto Banus, but the trail went cold. Tomkins used several aliases, including Raymond John Farmer and the surname O’Flynn, and was also known as “Jimbles”.

Not a G'day for Hogan
THE AUSTRALIAN actor Paul Hogan has been banned from leaving the country because of claims he owes millions of pounds in unpaid tax. The 70-year-old star of the Crocodile Dundee films has been under investigation for five years, with the tax authorities claiming he owes more than £21.3m. Hogan now lives in Los Angeles with his wife Linda Kozlowski and their 12-yearold son, but he returned to Australia to attend his mother's funeral. She died last week aged 101. Hogan's lawyer told the
Sydney Daily Telegraph officers served a notice on the eve of the funeral. "It was served on Paul's daughter at her Sydney home on Friday night with the funeral on Saturday morning," he said. "Imagine on the night before you bury your mother for this to happen. "The process of detaining Paul in Australia away from his wife and child in Los Angeles has devastated him and he hopes that discussions between us and the Australian Tax Office (ATO) will lead to a prompt resolution allowing him to return to his family." "Following five years of intrusive investigations by the Australian Crime
Commission and the ATO, no charges have been laid." The investigation is centred on earnings made a decade ago when Hogan was in the process of moving to America. The bill has risen because of interest and penalties through non-payment. Hogan has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing in several interviews in recent years. "I'm insulted to be called a tax cheat. My financial adviser and my manager are not tax cheats either, nor have they done any cheating on my behalf. "I've paid my tax. Go away. Stop sticking your nose in about what money I've got here or where, or what I'm
going to do with it, or how I got it. Am I going to get arrested? Bring it on." The Federal Court was told last week the Crime Commission was getting ready to lay criminal charges against Hogan, and two business partners John Cornell and Anthony Stewart. Hogan and Cornell are believed to have made upwards of £97m from their successful partnership but the tax office alleges that some of the income was sent offshore to hide it. Hogan used to be the face of Australian tourism, fronting a number of television ads, famously telling viewers he'd "slip another shrimp on the barbie for ya".

HIV Pop star avoids prison AN HIV-positive German pop star accused of infecting an ex-boyfriend has been given a two-year suspended sentence. Nadja Benaissa, 28, who is a member of Germany’s most successful girl band, No Angels, was convicted on one count of grievous bodily harm and two counts of attempted bodily harm. The singer had admitted to having unprotected sex and keeping her virus a secret but denied deliberately infecting anyone. Prosecutors and the defence argued for a suspended sentence as she had confessed to the crime and said sorry. During the trial’s closing arguments, Ms Benaissa made an emotional apology. “I am sorry from the bottom of my heart. I would love to turn back the clock, but I can’t.” Medical experts determined she had almost certainly infected one of her exboyfriends with the HIV virus, as they both had a strain of

the virus that is relatively rare in Germany. Ms Benaissa told the court that she had kept her disease a secret because she was afraid of the consequences for her career. She admitted it was a “cowardly act”. Ms Benaissa was arrested in Frankfurt last year, shortly before she was due to perform a solo concert. She spent ten days in custody. The singer was diagnosed with the disease when she was 17 during a routine screening after she became pregnant. No Angels formed on the TV talent show Popstars in 2000 and went on to sell more than 5 million albums.
New York building leaves the Empire owner in a State A SOARING addition to New York's iconic skyline has been approved, despite the owner of the Empire State Building claiming it is "an assault" on the city. The 67-storey skyscraper, known as 15 Penn Plaza, will rise from Manhattan's streets, just two blocks away from the city's tallest building. At 1,190ft (363m), it will be just short of the Empire State Building - which stands at 1,454ft (443m) and has been largely unobstructed since it was built in 1931. But the owner had raised objections, claiming the new building would ruin "the very uniqueness of the New York City skyline". Lobbying to cut 15 Penn Plaza's proposed height by a third, Anthony Malkin called
it "an assault on New York City and its iconography". He added his skyscraper "is the defining building on the city's skyline and its single most important landmark". However, the city council
evidently disagreed and voted in favour of construction by a margin of 47 to one. Mayor Michael Bloomberg said: "Anybody that builds a building in New York City
changes its skyline. We don't have to run around to every other owner and apologise. "One guy owns a building and he'd like to have it be the only tall building. I'm sorry that's not the real world."

A shocking one in 10 readymade salads on sale contains more salt than a Big Mac, according to the Consensus Action on Salt (Cash) research. Out of the 270 salad and pasta bowls surveyed, only six contained less salt than a packet of crisps and a tenth had more than the 2.1g contained in a Big Mac burger. The worst offender was found to be a spicy crayfish noodles salad from Eat, containing 3.51g of salt - more than 17 times saltier than a Pret A Manger No Bread Tricolore with 0.2g of salt. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) recommends adults eat no more than 6g of salt a day - about a teaspoonful - to minimise the risk of high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease. Among the supermarkets, Marks & Spencer sell seven of the 10 saltiest salads, the worst being its Taste of Asia salad (2.83g), containing almost as much salt as six packets of crisps, Cash said. Just 22% of the salads branded as “healthy” would get a green traffic light label,

Graham MacGregor, from the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine, said: “It is absurd that only six salads contain less salt than a packet of crisps. “Clearly the manufacturers still have a long way to go if we are to reduce our salt
intake to 6g a day and save the maximum number of lives. “Every gram of salt removed from our diet is estimated to prevent 6,000 deaths from heart attacks, heart disease and strokes per year, creating potential healthcare savings of £1.5bn per year.” M&S nutritionist Claire Hughes insisted Cash’s survey looked at different pack sizes, making comparison of salt levels in salads “very confusing” for consumers. “We want to make it as easy as possible for our customers to eat a healthy diet and we meet all of the FSA salt targets for salads,” she added. “We always provide front of pack colour-coded labelling on our salads and are committed to continuing to review the salt in our products whilst still offering a broad range of cuisines for our customers to enjoy.”

There’s no Happy Mondays for Bez FORMER Happy Mondays star Bez has been jailed for four weeks after assaulting his ex-girlfriend during a row over money. The star, real name Mark Berry, accused the mother of his two-year-old son of stealing money from him before flying into a rage and throttling her. Bez was originally given a community order at Manchester Magistrates court and asked to pay £450 in costs. But he told the chair of the magistrates’ bench he would not obey the sentence, and protested his innocence. “I’m not doing it. Bothered. I’m going to appeal and take this to a real court,” he said. In response, Ms Cash told the former Celebrity Big Brother winner he was going to jail for one month. Bez, who represented himself, shouted, “Victory is in my grasp” as he was handcuffed and taken to the cells. The argrument between the
former couple broke out at their flat in Manchester in May when Bez could not find the takings from a concert the night before. Ms Ward is the lead singer in Bez’s band Domino Bones. She previously told the court he was “looking insane” as he squeezed her neck and kicked down a door. Bez claimed he was acting in self-defence but was convicted of the assault earlier this month.

He was also convicted of using unlawful violence to gain entry into their home. Bez found fame for his freaky dancing in the Happy Mondays during the 1980s. Following the sentence, he instructed a solicitor who was in court for another case to make a bail application on his behalf. He was also issued with a restraining order preventing his from contacting his former partner for two years.

The track, released on October 4, marks the beginning of the reconciliation of Take That as a five piece. Williams has confirmed he will tour with the group. Mexican drug war worries are intensified
A MASS grave containing the bodies of 72 people has been found in northeast Mexico after a gun battle between suspected drug cartel members and the country’s military. The bodies of 58 men and 14 women were found at a ranch south of the border town of Matamoros, close to the US state of Texas. The grave appears to be the largest drug cartel body dumping ground found in Mexico since President Felipe Calderon began his fight against drug trafficking in late 2006. “The federal government categorically condemns the barbarous acts committed by criminal organisations,” the navy said in a statement. “Society as a whole should condemn these type of acts, which illustrate the absolute necessity to continue fighting crime with all rigour.” Mexican drug cartels often use empty building sites, ranches or mine shafts to dump the bodies of executed rivals or kidnap victims. The discovery of the bodies
came after security officers manning a checkpoint on a motorway were approached by a wounded man who said he had been attacked by cartel gunmen at a nearby ranch. Navy aircraft sent to the scene were fired on by gunmen who tried to escape in a convoy of vehicles. The gun battle left one marine and three suspected gunmen dead. Numerous weapons were later seized. The area has been at the centre of turf wars between the Gulf drug cartel and their one-time allies, the Zetas drug gang. Authorities have made a number of grisly finds over the summer, including the discovery in May of 55 bodies in an abandoned mine near Taxco, a city popular with international tourists and, in July, 51 bodies dumped near a rubbish tip outside the city of Monterrey. Many of those found are believed to have been dealers from a rival gang, although cartels often get rid of the bodies of kidnap victims in the same way. More than 28,000 people have been killed in violence tied to Mexico’s drug war since the offensive began.
Oil companies to look North
DESPITE hostile conditions and intense environmental opposition, the Arctic is set to become a key global oil supplier as demand for fossil fuels continues to rise, analysts have said this week. Edinbugh-based Cairn Energy has found “early indications of a working hydrocarbon system” with its first well in Greenland. But while the indications look positive for locating oil and gas, retrieving it will present huge difficulties for oil and gas producers. “In terms of reserves, the
Arctic has plenty. It is about being able to find it at level which don’t involve too much cost and too much risk,” said Amrita Sen, commodities researcher at Barclays Capital. “You’re looking at 10 or 20 years at least [before it becomes a big supplier] because it’s not just about the finds, it’s about building the pipelines an the infrastructure to be able to get that oil out into the world. “Potentially by that time the easily accessible fields of Norway, the UK and Mexico are dwindling quite fast, so the Arctic may make up a significant proportion - even up to 10% - of global supplies.” Manouchehr Takin, an expert from Centre for Global
Energy Studies, added that the sheer size of potential reserves hidden below the icy waters meant the region would not be overlooked. He said estimates for the amount of oil remaining to be discovered in the Arctic ranged from 100 to 200 billion barrels, while between 1,000 and 2,000 trillion cubic feet of gas could be found there. “Even if you take the lower part of the estimated range, the resources look very significant indeed,” he told Sky News. However, Mr Takin said the dangers and difficulties of accessing the supplies were numerous. Icebergs pose a threat,
exploration and production limited to the summer and there is no opportunity to have a base nearby - so all the basic necessities for the drilling and the workers would have to be prepared in advance. Then, when oil begins to be produced, firms have to make a decision over where and how to station the infrastructure and transport etc. Even so, technological advances, experience gained through other deepwater operations and the anticipation that the Arctic will become more navigable for strategic and commercial purposes mean energy firms are likely to pursue their interests there.
Lionel says Hello to Lineker advert POP superstar Lionel Richie is teaming up with Gary Lineker in his first TV advert for 30 years. The US singer teams up with the Match of the Day host for the new Walkers crisps campaign in which he sings a revamped version of his hit song, ‘Say You, Say Me’. To fit the advert, which airs for the first time this weekend, the lyrics have been changed to ‘Share You, Share Me’.

Maxine’s given fond farewell A MEMORIAL service in the form of a celebration of her life was held for Maxine Michaela in her home town of St John’s, in Worcester, last Saturday. Friends and family gathered to pay tribute to the popular teacher’s assistant from Tijoco, who died recently
from an aggressive strain of ALS, which affected her muscles. Maxine, who was 41, leaves a partner, Fran, and her fiveyear-old daughter Jessie. She was attached to the Spanish School at El Medano before her illness took a grip 15 months ago.
Refuge dogs can’t wait to show off their slick agility EVEN the Aktiontier dogs are counting the days to their next agility fun meeting, to be held on 5th September. Owners and staff at the dog refuge, based at the Accion Del Sol centre in Granadilla, will start with a gentle stroll to the beach with the animals at 4pm. That will be followed by afternoon tea and cakes at the refuge, and a guided tour by Marion, who runs the sanctuary. Then comes the entertainment with the dog agility class. It’s great fun for the owners and even more so for the dogs as they strut their stuff. There is no charge for this event, but a few euros in the

pot would be welcomed by the staff - and dogs - towards the new quiet area which is being built. It is open from Monday to Friday (3-6pm) and staff are always looking for walkers to help with the 170-plus dogs in their care. So if you have a few hours to spare, then please lend a hand. The centre is situated at ITER Windmill Farm, on the Granadilla Industrial Estate. Turn off at junction 51 on the TF1 and just head for the windmills, where you will find Accion Del Sol, directly underneath them.
Procedure for found/abandoned dogs Because of financial constraints, we have to insist that the public do not visit the refuge out of hours (36pm). We do not have the manpower to deal with both the dogs and visitors at the same time. If you find an abandoned dog, please take it to Hospivet Sur in Las Chafiras. They will check the dog for a microchip and, in most cases, contact his owner. If the dog is truly abandoned, then we’ll be informed and will collect the dog from there. Many thanks. British Consuls see how the Lions are still doing roaring trade for locals MATTHEW VICKERS, British Consul to the Canary Islands and Dave Thomas, British Consul General for Iberia, paid a visit this week to the Lions Charity Shop at the Apolo Centre in Los Cristianos. They were there to have a look at the work the Lions are doing in the local community, and how it fits in with that of the Consulate. The visitors were welcomed by Tenerife Sur President Norman Goodall MBE, who gave them a tour of the facility, which opened just under a year ago. It includes an extensive ladies’ section, a library and a general area where men’s and children’s clothing, electrical goods, toys and general bric-a-brac are displayed. The shop is one of two operated by Tenerife Sur Lions; the other is located in Costa del Silencio and has been running successfully for 10 years. All items in the shops are priced very competitively and, in today’s economic climate, represent excellent value for money. They have all been generously donated by members of the public and local businesses. The Lions do need your support to continue with their valuable work, so remember: DON’T DUMP IT, DONATE IT. Norman Goodall then went on to explain how the cash generated from the shops, and other traditional fundraising activities, had been used since the branch was formed over 25 years ago. Projects included the supply of a deep-sea lifeboat, a quick-response ambulance, children’s holidays, furniture, bedding, food, repatriation, disaster funds; help with accommodation, plus mortgage or rent payments. Medically the Lions have supplied hearing aids, eyeglasses, supported osteoporosis and prostate cancer testing. They have also helped arrange funerals and have loaned out wheelchairs, crutches and frames from the shop at Costa del Silencio. By far the biggest projects of recent years have been the annual children’s holi-
Kalle the cat make incredible journey A STRAY cat called Kalle somehow found his way back to the base he called home after an incredible 10kilometre journey. Kalle is one of several strays neutered by K9, who all live within the Laguna Park 2 holiday complex at Torviscas. Rauni, a cat-loving Finnish lady who spends her holidays there each year, keeps K9 informed of any concerns about the animals. In 2009 she took home one of the stray cats and, during her holiday here last March, decided to take Kalle back to Finland with her. However, Kalle had a problem with one of his ears, so K9’s Hazel took the animal to the vet, who prescribed antibiotics. Kalle was returned to Rauni, who cared for him until she returned home on 13th March. But the cat was still not well enough to travel, so he came into the K9 cattery to continue his treatment. After that, and before his travel documents had arrived, Kalle escaped from the cattery on 2nd April. As he had been there for three weeks, it was assumed he would return when hungry, but he didn’t.
Rauni was given the bad news and was, understandably, upset. She returned for another holiday in June and, happily, found Kalle after a search of the complex. He had lost weight, having somehow found his way back to Laguna Park from the K9 kennels at San Miguel. But a check-up revealed he was none the worse for his ordeal. Some holiday-makers and staff at the complex continue to feed him, and he has regained weight. But he won’t be travelling to Finland. It has been decided that he will be allowed to spend his remaining years at Laguna Park 2, which is obviously where his heart lies. Laguna Park 2 is one of a number of responsible complexes which co-operate fully with K9 and other animal welfare organisations in their quest to neuter the stray and feral cats living on their properties, thus preventing further breeding.

days. With the continuous help of Lions Clubs in the UK, more than 500 handicapped and under-privileged young people and their carers have been brought to Tenerife for holidays of a lifetime. Similarly Tenerife Sur Lions have organised and financed holidays in the UK for local under-privileged young people from schools and orphanages across Tenerife. The latest took place last month, when a 31-strong

party enjoyed a holiday at Pontins, Prestatyn Sands Holiday Park, in North Wales. Tenerife Sur Lions also run a bi-lingual “Helpline” service, enabling those in difficulty to contact the club directly for assistance. British film-maker Paul Greengrass (Bloody Sunday, United 93) took over the directing duties from Doug Liman for this sequel to The Bourne Identity and manages the rare feat of improving (if only slightly) on the original. Two years after ex-CIA operative Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) apparently escaped the attentions of his spymasters, a corrupt Russian businessman frames him for a double assassination, which drags Bourne back into the murky world of international espionage. Greengrass uses his drama-documentary background to good effect, delivering consistently exciting action without ever pushing the bounds of credibility. As Bourne, Damon continues to impress in a role that goes against his wholesome, all-American image - moving slickly and almost silently through the film like a small, angry black hole.

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, protector of poultry, guardian of gourds and foragers’ friend, only gets picked for panel shows because he doesn’t kick up a stink when comedians tease him for being a wet hedge-muncher. Here, though, his sense of self-humour is tested to the max when he reads out the line, “Occasionally, I put Marmite on my face and let my dog lick it off.” If Hugh’s telling the truth, he’s an even better sport than we’ve given him credit for. But, all angles considered, we watched hoping it was a fib. The alternative is just too creepy. Also guesting is Miranda Hart who, thankfully, gets through the half-hour without once referencing her boringly self-deprecating belief that she looks like a man. Best in show is David Mitchell’s fight with Rhod Gilbert over the aforementioned yeast-based spread.

What a difference a month makes... I HAVE deliberately waited a month to write this as I didn’t want to come over as a gushing father. And am so glad I did. Never again will I look into the eyes of a brand-new dad and believe a word he says. If you are a mother reading this and thinking, “Oh, you have it easy”, please let me finish before passing judgement. The life I once had has now been banished and never to return. It’s there alongside that first kiss, first beer and first base! I knew it was not going to be easy but never, in a million years, did I think it was going to be this hard. The first week was brilliant: all the presents from family and friends - even perfect strangers. The good wishes and cards were all lovely, and I was enjoying the start of family life. I even thanked everyone who said my son was beautiful. I am not stupid: he had buggy eyes, wrinkly skin and what I can only describe as gammon steaks for ears. But naturally, I fell in love with him and even convinced myself he was a good-looking kid. Mrs Ferguson’s family were over for the first week-and-ahalf of his life, and they all carried on with some kind of normality as the child was passed from person to person while the bonding process began. Then, as the group became three, I felt as though I was looking on at my life through someone else’s eyes. It was like an episode of The Twilight Zone as what I was so used to became a life I did not recognise. I thought the only pain I would experience was on a personal level was that of watching the person you are in love with going through contractions, without any kind of pain relief, and feeling

helpless as there was not a thing I could do. But I now feel the pain in my ears of the highest sound level in the world. The piercing shriek of this noise has now given me a permanent headache. I have tried every tablet known to man to relieve this, but to no avail. My sense of smell has gone completely awol because of the strength of baby pooh. Why is it so strong? I watch the History Channel and have seen many years of programmes about the First World War and the witness reports of Mustard Gas. No disrespect, but I’m sure that if our side had fired
filled-up nappies at the enemy, the conflict would have all ended a lot quicker. When thinking of babies,
you are supposed to think of rainbows. Sorry, but I have yet to see the multitude of colours I have witnessed from his nappy in a rainbow. I love my sleep. If I don’t get at least nine hours a night, I am a psycho ready to burst at the seams. Ask anyone who knows me - if I am moody going into Oasis Fm, the staff know my sleep pattern has gone. I was on the nightshift for a week and was the worst human being in the world. I don’t get it. They spend nine months in the dark and all they do is sleep until they pop out. So you’d think they would be in check with what hap-
pens at night. But no, when visitors are around at ours, and he sits there cooing away, they all think he is an angel. I have news for you. From now on, I am accepting visitors during the early hours only, and I am considering changing his name to Damien. He has the look of the Devil in him as he looks around to see if I notice that he is awake. I swear he does it in badness, giving me a false sense of security and, as my eyes start to close, that’s when the wailing begins again. Feeding time is for me taking the biscuit. How much milk can one person drink? I Googled, asked friends who are midwives and they all said the same thing: “A baby has a stomach only the size of a walnut.” Okay then, let’s save time and give him a walnut! It’s a win-win situation. I can finish the job within a matter of seconds to get some sleep, and the kid has a full stomach. That’s maybe me being a little harsh there, but it’s a good idea come the next episode of evolution. This week has been the worst, though. I am seriously considering contacting the Guinness Book of World Records as I seem to have had a cold for the longest period in history. My throat kills, I have the sniffles and my chest feels like it belongs to an 80-yearold. It’s driving me mental and I have now passed this on to Taylor. Talk about attention seeking- this kid has turned into a right little diva. His Mum cleans the bogies from his nose, and he is a little wheezy. So every ten minutes, he lulls us again into thinking he is sleeping, and then we hear the dummy being spat out and the foghorn voice starting again. We pick him up, his eyes close, and we then lay him in the Moses basket. By this time, the area where I live goes into blackout and all the people living there take to
their underground bunkers as he cries like a 1940s warning siren. And it goes on and on and on. I am well freaked out with all this going on. When I started to court Mrs Ferguson, I never thought I would see the beautiful woman I fell in love with sitting on the couch with a breast pump going full blast! This is simply from a male’s point of view and I know for a fact that you ladies reading this right now are fuming. And I also know what’s going on in your mind and exactly what you are going say. So let me stop you there and let me find cap lock on my keyboard: BEING A MOTHER IS THE HARDEST JOB IN THE WORLD! No matter what career in life down the millions of years, not one job can be like that of being a mother. I can write a little column and let off steam about how frustrating it all is. But that’s only a small percentage of what his Mum goes through. She is with him 24 hours a day. I can go to work, make an excuse to pop out for a bit of quiet and yes, I do feel a little guilty after the fifth pint, knowing the two of them are alone. So whatever I and every other male feel on the planet about being a new father, it’s NOTHING to what your wife/girlfriend goes through, from conception to the end of their days. Final note. When he looks into my eyes as I give him a cuddle, or just makes strange noises at me, my heart melts. I know at that very instant I would do anything for him. He was planned and Kate and I have never been happier. I am deeply in love with a boy and would not change a thing … not even his gammon-steak ears! For Taylor: When you are old enough to read this, I will have lost count the times I have said that I love you . Dad xx

DRESSING your windows is one of the most important factors of your home, and one that will draw attention immediately. The curtains are probably one of the first things you see when you walk into a room. If you moved to Tenerife for the sunshine and that fabulous view from your lounge window, why frame it with a pale rag hanging on either side? Having said that, there are many ready-made curtains and blinds available, and you may be lucky and get something that fits your windows perfectly. If not, though, made-to-measure curtains are not that expensive, and you can definitely tell the difference! Window dressings need a sense of proportion and the eye responds better to poles that are midway between the top of the window and the
Made to measure, ...on or off the peg? ceiling, for example. Curtains fitted right to the top of the wall can be overpowering, and make the room look smaller and the ceiling lower. Maybe you like the idea of white voiles blowing in the breeze, but also need some privacy at night? No problem, you can choose your fresh, white voile, but back it with white sun curtain behind it on a separate pole. That will enable you to use them on their own during the day, and together at night. Sun curtain is something which has been used here in Tenerife for many years, because of the intense sun and heat. However, they have
now been developed so that they bear no relation to the plastic ones which are white on one side and silver on the other. They now come in a wide variety of vibrant and muted colours, so you can use them on their own if you need to keep the cost down, or to back other curtains or voiles in white. Apart from their obvious use - to keep the sun out of rooms - they also have the added advantage of preventing fading to furniture, and are ideal for people who leave their properties shut up for long periods. The bedroom is one area
where sun curtain is a real asset. In fact, I don’t know why it isn’t more in use in the UK! After all, whether you are on holiday, or just like the occasional lie-in or afternoon siesta, sun curtain will ensure that your bedroom stays cool and dark at any time of day. This is also a real bonus
when you are trying to get the kids to sleep early on our long summer evenings! If you have a window with direct sunlight that causes you a problem (when you are watching TV, say), but you don’t want to make the room completely dark, why not consider vertical blinds in sun curtain material?

Golden oldies who just can’t get away OLDER couples hoping to down-size their UK properties are finding it far more difficult than they thought they would. Yet they perform an integral role in the market because they are cash buyers, so they don't need mortgages. They move when they want to, rather than because of economic conditions, and they have all

looked a recession in the eyes before. Richard Donnell, director of property analysts Hometrack, says: “The over-65s own £1,100 billion of housing equity in this country, which means they constitute 25% of the value of the housing market. “We spend huge amounts of time and effort getting people on to the housing ladder, but very little time helping people down-size at the other end. “They are effectively blocking beds in family houses
because we are not supplying enough retirement homes. “We need to free up this very valuable tier of housing for families, and cater for a section of society which is growing faster than any other.” Mr Donnell calculates that builders have produced between 1,300 and 2,200 retirement homes in each of the past five years, while around 26,000 seniors each year have gone to claim their pensions abroad. “It is crazy,” he adds.

Some colourful cures for so many ailments AS most of you must know by now, herbs can be grown in Tenerife all year round, and not just to flavour food. But were you also aware that many plants in the garden that we consider flowers are actually herbs as well? Take nasturtiums and marigolds - both extremely colourful flowers. They are also used as alternative medicine remedies, and thegood thing is that you can grow a variety of them in containers on your patio or in your garden. There is so much more to both these plant/herb-type flowers. Nasturtiums have orange, yellow and red flowers, and can be used in hanging baskets, or simply tumbling down the side of a wall. They spread like mad once they get a hold, and pop up everywhere in the garden in the most unexpected of places,maing a fabulous show where you least expect it, thanks to the seeds being blown around by the wind. Did you know that nasturtiums can be used to add colour and a hot peppery flavour to salads. You can also pickle the seeds to provide a substitute for capers. On the medical side, they are also high in vitamin C (the sunshine vitamin) and can be used to prevent scurvy. The Pot Marigold (Calendula officinalis) is recognised as herb now widely used for many purposes - as a medicine, food colourant and cosmetic ingredient. Amazingly (if you weren’t aware), it is effective for most minor skin complaints, and even helps to alleviate nappy rash. The other side of the coin is that just looking at the sunny orange flowers cheers the spirit, and it is also an excellent companion plant in an organic garden. This happy flower, known as the “merrybuds” of
Shakespeare, was first used in Indian and Arabic cultures before being discovered by the ancient Egyptians, who valued marigold as a rejuvenating herb. The marigold’s uses are manifold. In the kitchen, the flower petals make a very good culinary dye. They have even been used for butter and cheese, and as a poor

man’s saffron to colour rice. They are also an attractive addition to salads and omelettes (young leaves can be added to salads) and, believe it or not, they make an interesting cup of tea. As for the medical factor, marigold flowers contain antiseptic, anti-fungal and antibacterial properties, which promote healing, and you can
make a compress or a poultice of the flowers for burns, scalds and stings. They are also useful in the treatment of varicose veins, chilblains and impetigo. A cold infusion may be used as eyewash for conjunctivitis, and can be a help in the treatment of thrush. The sap from the stem is known for removing warts,
corns and calluses, while there are many skin and cosmetic preparations which contain marigold. Infuse the flowers and use as a skin lotion to reduce large pores, nourish and clear the skin, and clear up spots and pimples. Blimey, who needs the chemist? As well as the popular, culinary herbs such as mint, basil thyme, parsley, and rosemary, which all thrive out here, lavender is a wonderful source of scent, as well as oil. Oh, and don’t forget, it can also be used for pest control and cooking. It is one of the most popular medicinal plants, used by many past civilisations, and the Romans are credited with helping to spread the wide use of the plant/herb today. Judging by the number of species available, lavender never seems to have fallen out of popularity throughout thousands of years of history. It is one of the most-used
medicinal plants, perhaps because of its versatile ability to heal a wide number of health problems. Although there are many species of lavender, true lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and, to some extent, spike lavender (Lavandula latifolia) were the most commonly-used medicinal varieties used in ancient times. It was used both as a herb and as an oil to treat ancient ailments. In fact, these two varieties have been used medicinally in a number of ways throughout history. That’s because lavender embraces a complex chemical make-up, which is capable of treating many problems. Dispersing dried lavender petals around the bed and applying a few drops of lavender oil on pillows and bed sheets helps reduce sleep disorders and calms the nerves, acting as a sedative to induce deep slumber. Lighting scented lavender candles can also be conducive to relaxation and meditation, besides adding lavender petals to bath water. Also, using lavender perfume keeps the nerves soothed throughout the day, and leaves you feeling fresh and positive Some of the most common medicinal uses of lavender are: · Insect repellent · Eases cramps · Eases muscular aches and pain · Treats coughs and colds · Mends headaches · Helps you relax Several records indicate that lavender was even used by the ancient Egyptians as one of the ancient oils in the mummification process. Records also indicate that they used many other herbs and plants medicinally and for cosmetic purposes. The list goes on and on, and it is no wonder that lavender, especially, seems to have been used forever, one way or another

Let’s face facts THIS month’s men’s section is all about cleaning …no, not the house or apartment. You! I think some of you guys out there are still stuck in the 70s when it comes to grooming. I bet you all still use soap or, even worse, shower gel to wash your face. Things have changed, and it’s now so easy to care for your skin without changing your routine or spending more time in the bathroom. Most toiletries contain two main ingredients: water and salt. Yes salt, which is used to thicken products like shampoo, shower gel, bubble bath, etc. Okay, a little is not so bad, but look on the back of the product. If it says sodium (salt), then you can safely say that this product could be drying you out, or making a skin condition worse. When washing your face, try to look for a gentle face cleanser, which comes in a tube normally or, sometimes, in the form of a bar (like soap). These products are designed for your face area only. They are much milder and don’t have the harshness that soap does. Never wash your face in shower gel. When using a face cleanser, choose one that is designed for your skin type. Choose from normal, normal to dry or normal to greasy. Other types are available, usually from a perfumerie. I can’t mention brands, but try to choose a non-super-
market brand, usually around £10-15. With daily use, these will last around 3-4 months. Start by wetting face with warm (not hot) water, then apply a small amount of your chosen product and work into a lather in your hands. Apply to your face in a circular movement, not forgetting your nose and neck area, too. Be particularly careful around the eye area as this skin is much thinner. Massage in well for around 30 seconds, then rinse well in cool water - or cold if you can stand it. This cooler water will close your pores, helping guard against spots, tightening up your skin and making it appear brighter. If you really want to look after your face, then apply a toner (usually in liquid form), which will seal the skin and calm down any irritations (usually from shaving). If used after shaving, be warned that it could sting slightly, but don’t be alarmed because this is normal. Next, the most important step: moisturising. It was once
thought of as not a “man thing”, but is now considered an everyday, essential procedure. Getting your moisturiser right is very important - too much, and you could get spots or overly greasy skin; too little, and your skin can feel tight and even dehydrated. Depending on your skin type, you should be using a quantity around the size of a euro to moisturise your face and neck area. Massage well into the skin, using circular movements but in an upward direction, especially on the neck. Never apply aftershave to your face area because it contains alcohol, which dries the face. Instead, use over body and clothes. Yes, having a new routine just to wash your face may seem like a chore, but you will get used to it, and it takes only a few minutes. You will see the results after a few weeks, and the benefits in years to come! Carl

Dear Shirley, It’s lovely that you helped your daughter to buy a nice home. Now, though, you need to let go - with love. Your daughter’s a wife and mother; she’s an adult who’s allowed to decide how she’ll live - and that’s not according to your rules. Getting angry and upset with her is certainly not going to make her change. It’s even possible that your criticisms, however well-meaning, are making her rebel and be messier than she would otherwise be. It’s not her job in life to please you, remember. For the moment, why not meet your daughter only for pleasure trips, such as going to the beach, shopping or out for lunch or coffee? You don’t have to go to her home. Treat her with respect and give her some genuine praise, even if it’s only about her nice smile, her shiny hair or how lovely her daughter is. Once you’ve had a few noncontentious outings, you might ask her if there’s anything she’d like a hand with. If there is, great! But if she sees your help as
unnecessary or critical, accept that and let her do things her own way. Who knows, without feeling criticised, she might be sufficiently relieved and energised to do more housework. She also may not, because it’s her choice. Dear Brian, You’re in a difficult position through no fault of your own and I truly sympathise. What neither of us knows is why your friend is to be replaced. The bosses must have some reason for this. Maybe very recent problems have arisen within the company so they can no longer afford two fork-lift truck drivers; maybe he’s done something to put him at odds with the management, or maybe they can save money by employing you for less money than they pay him. I don’t know how your friend will react when they give him the boot, but I don’t suppose he’ll be very happy about it. He may even try to blame you, which would be totally unfair because you haven’t chosen the management’s action and wouldn’t have taken your friend’s job deliberately. Hopefully, they’ll decide they can move him to some other position. What can you do about this? I’d advise you to keep quiet. After all, you’re in no way responsible for the situation. If you did tell your friend, (a) there’s nothing he can do about it and (b), you’d be doing yourself a disservice with the management. So when he finds out, it’s probably best if you don’t let on that you knew. I hope he’ll continue to be your friend, because you’ll be able to support him in looking for a better job. If he falls out with you, it would be through no fault of your own. I’d be fairly wary of this particular company, though. Good luck. Heart-lifting delight for chocolate lovers IT IS the news millions of sweet-toothed women have been waiting to hear - a small chocolate treat helps lower the risk of heart failure. A study of middle-aged and elderly women who ate a small amount of chocolate no more than twice a week found they had a lower risk of heart failure. Unfortunately, eating even a little chocolate every day did not have the same health benefits. The nine-year study, involving 31,823 Swedish women, looked at the relationship between the amount of highquality chocolate the women ate and their risk of heart failure.
The quality of chocolate eaten by the women had a higher-density cocoa content. And the researchers found that women who ate an average of one to two servings of the high-quality chocolate per week had a 32% lower risk of developing heart failure. Those who had one to three servings per month had a 26% lower risk, but those who ate at least one serving daily did not appear to benefit from the protective effect against heart failure. Lead researcher Dr Murray Mittleman said the lack of a positive effect among women eating chocolate every day was probably through the additional calories consumed. Dr Mittleman, director of the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Research Unit in
Boston, said: “You can’t ignore that chocolate is a relatively calorie-dense food, and large amounts of habitual consumption will raise your risks for weight gain. “But if you’re going to have a treat, dark chocolate is probably a good choice, as long as it’s in moderation.” High concentration of compounds called “flavonoids” in chocolate may lower blood pressure, among other benefits, according to mostly short-term studies. However, this is the first research to show long-term outcomes related specifically to heart failure, which can result from ongoing, untreated, high blood pressure. Dr Mittleman added: “Anything that helps to decrease heart failure is an
important issue worth examining.” But Dr Linda Van Horn, former chair of the American Heart Association Nutrition Committee, said: “This is not an ‘eat all you want’, takehome message. It’s actually that eating a little dark chocolate can be healthful, as long as other adverse behaviours do not occur, such as weight gain.”
Goggle-eyed tanning is the only safe way THOSE who still worship sunbeds have been warned that they are risking their eyesight by failing to wear protective goggles or shades. The UV damage caused by bright sunbed lamps can cause long-term problems and growths in the eyes, according to the College of Optometrists. Merely closing the eyes while on the sunbed does not offer full protection, because the skin there is so thin that it could burn. The College recommends that people wear the goggles or “winkies” provided by
tanning salons. Dr Susan Blakeney, optometric adviser to the College, said: “ The skin on the eyelid is very thin and delicate, so it’s vital to protect this area from UV rays. “While we do not advocate the use of sunbeds, if you do use them it is important to ensure that you always use protective eye wear - as you would wear sunglasses when outside - to safeguard your eyes from UV rays. “Avoiding wearing goggles or ‘winkies’ whilst using a sunbed can lead to benign eye growths called pterygium.” Tanning beds use ultraviolet light that produce both UVA and UVB rays, which can be more powerful than sunlight

as it is directed straight at the face, stressed Dr Blakeney. “Repeated exposure to UV may cause long-term damage, which could affect sight in later life. We have only one pair of eyes, so if you want to safeguard your sight, always ensure you wear the proper protection whether on the sunbed or in the sun.” The news comes on top of the warning to sunbed-users about the risks of skin cancer. Sunbeds have been linked to malignant melanoma, and incidence rates of this deadly type of skin cancer have risen dramatically among both sexes since the 1970s. More than 10,400 cases are now diagnosed each year in the UK.

The perfect paella! HOW do you make the perfect paella? Easy - just marry a Spanish girl who loves home cooking. Actually, you don’t have to make that connection to enjoy what is acknowledged as the most famous and popular Spanish dish around the world. Yet there are as many versions of paella as there are cooks in Spain! It originated in Valencia, on the Mediterranean coast of Spain between Barcelona and Murcia, which is well known for its rice dishes. This region still has extensive rice fields and rich soil, and its coastal position adds an abundance of seafood and shellfish to make up a
wonderful seafood paella. And if you add the flavourable olive oil produced in Spain, you have everything necessary to make the paella or your choice: meat and vegetable, or seafood. It will take 45 minutes to prepare, and another 60 minutes of cooking time to produce the tastiest, most traditional dish of all. Ingredients (This seafood paella recipe makes approximately 12 servings) 1 yellow onion, diced 2 medium tomatoes, diced 1 whole chicken or 8 chicken drumsticks 1½lbs pork loin (fat trimmed), cut into ¾-inch pieces ½lb calamari (squid) cleaned and sliced into rings
Medium grain or pearl rice (the exact quantity depends on the size of the pan, so have at least 1lb on hand) 4-6 cups chicken broth 1 large pinch Saffron 1½lbs raw mussels in shell (frozen or fresh) 1lb small clams (frozen or fresh) 1½lbs raw shrimp, medium or large - shell on 1 red pepper seeded and sliced 10oz pkt frozen peas Olive oil, salt to taste Equipment (Before you start, make sure you have all the ingredients and gather all the equipment you’ll need) 17in (144cm) paella pan Round charcoal BBQ Medium saucepan Meat cleaver Sharp knife for chopping meat and vegetables Aluminum foil or large tea towel to cover paella Preparation: Cut the chicken and pork into serving-size pieces – You’ll need one whole chicken, cut into serving-size pieces, or 8 chicken drumsticks. If you use a whole chicken, use a meat cleaver to cut the chicken into pieces small enough to mix easily while sautéing. Cut the pork into ¾in pieces. Clean the squid and remove the tentacles. Make sure to remove the innards and the “spine” and discard. Then, cut the squid into rings. A good tip is to buy fresh squid whenever possible. If fresh squid is not available, look for packages of squid in the frozen-food section. The squid should NOT have batter or coating on them, since that type is used for frying. Slice red pepper and chop onions and tomatoes, set aside, and that’s the ingredients cleaned and chopped. Now it’s time to start the BBQ and begin cooking. But
do make sure the barbecue coals are covered in white ash, before you start cooking. Assemble all the ingredients on a table near the BBQ, so that you can stay in the area and monitor the cooking. Place the paella pan on the grate and add enough olive oil to coat the bottom and allow the pan to heat up. When hot enough, sauté the onions and tomatoes in the olive oil. Add olive oil as and when needed to prevent sticking. Once the onions are translucent, add the chicken
and cook, stirring constantly for about 15 minutes. Add pork and squid and cook, stirring often. Add the rice, sprinkling in the form of a large cross on the pan. Stir for 2-3 minutes to coat the rice thoroughly with oil and mix with the other ingredients. Add saffron threads to the chicken broth and stir. Slowly pour broth into pan until the contents are covered. Spread ingredients evenly over bottom of pan. Arrange mussels around outside edge of pan, pointing up. Place clams and shrimp in pan, distributing
them evenly around, then add slices of pepper on top. Allow to simmer, cooking rice. Add more broth if necessary. When rice is almost cooked, sprinkle peas over the pan. When rice is cooked, remove from heat and cover with aluminium foil or large tea towel, allowing paella to “rest” for 5-10 minutes before serving with lemon wedges. This is just one of many paella recipes. Some feature rabbit, bacon or chorizo, but the end product always turns out the same: delicious!

This sporting life - in days gone by THIS WEEK, David Penny takes a look at the early days of tourism and the various institutions created by the British community of the day to cater for both resident and visitor alike THE start of the tourist movement in the islands was determined by many factors, including the promotion of passenger travel by steam ships, which were bringing in manufactured goods and taking out agricultural produce. In 1895, Mr Alfred L Jones (the Freddy Laker of his day), of the Elder Dempster Line, managed to reduce the price of a return ticket from Liverpool to Las Palmas from between £15-25 in an attempt to secure a greater number of visitors to Gran Canaria. The increase in the influx of visitors was also linked to improvements in the available accommodation, with hotels like the Grand Hotel Orotava, Camacho’s Hotel, The Grand Hotel Taoro, or Quisiana Hotel in Tenerife, and Quiney Hotel, Bellavista Hotel, Santa Catalina Hotel or the Metropole Hotel in Gran Canaria. Their increasing demands brought about the opening of numerous establishments in all sectors: clothing stores, hat shops, bars, restaurants, photo studios, shops with English goods, and even established banks which, until 1885, were unknown in the islands. It is noteworthy that these establishments all accepted sterling as the currency of preference, and that great steps were taken to ensure that all assistants and clerks were able to converse to a high level in English. The resident British population, together with the now

sizable influx of visitors at this period, created a need for services provided by the various British Institutions formed around this time: Las Palmas Golf Club: this is the oldest golf club in Spain. Founded on December 17th 1891, it had its first headquarters in Altavista and among many other trophies is the Palmer Cup, which is the oldest sporting trophy in all of Spain. Las Palmas Lawn Tennis Club: this was founded in 1895 and its courts were located in the gardens of the Metropole Hotel. It held numerous tournaments, including American, doubles, and mixed, all of which enjoyed great popularity among the islanders. One
of the most famous players was Mr Sydney Head, who won the All-Spain championship in 1907 and received the trophy, in Madrid, from His Majesty King Alfonso XIII. Las Palmas Football Club: the pitch for this club was to be found within Puerto de la Luz, outside the offices of Wilson Sons & Co, near to Santa Catalina Pier. It was a British institution in which the Canary islanders themselves soon changed from being spectators to becoming players, and it enjoyed great popularity over a number of years. Las Palmas Cricket Club: this was formed around the same time and was situated between Santa Catalina Clinic
and La Casa del Caminero. Matches were played between every combination of teams, including Married v Single, Male v Female, Metropolie guests v Sta Catalina guests, and even residents against the crews of visiting British warships. It caused a Mr Seddon to comment, in 1903, that the capital of Gran Canaria could be proud of itself as it’s “the only port where you could find golf clubs, cricket, lawn tennis and football, not to mention croquet and poker”. El Club Español: it was founded in 1909 in Tenerife and was located at No9 Calle Constitucion. Cultural and recreational events were often organised, as well as many charitable functions. According to the statutes, only British members were accepted, but this was extended, in 1916, to include any English-speaking members, because of low membership numbers as a result of the First World War. Orotava Bowling and Recreation Club: founded in
1902, and soon saw its membership boom. It practised various sporting activities, most notably, golf, croquet, tennis and badminton. British Orotava Out-ofdoors Games Club: this club developed during the Twenties. All manner of ball games and other outdoor activities took place here. The building had been extended and modernised over the years, and was famous for its card room and bridge championships. It also had a terrace bar and a tea pavilion. One area in which Tenerife did lead was with its English language library. It started life in 1831 as the Tenerife Book Society, and was a sort of mobile library situated in what is now called Sitio Litre, in La Orotava. It was started by a Mr Charles Smith, who came here for health reasons. In 1904, the library opened in its current location within the Taoro Park, next to The British Yeoward School. It is reputed to hold the largest selection of English books in any library, in a non-English-
speaking country, in the world. There was also the British Club of Las Palmas, but this establishment warrants its own article, as it is such an institution and is, in fact, still operating to this day. It is interesting to note that more seemed to be going on in Las Palmas than in Santa Cruz at this time, and this was indeed the case; if we look at the British resident population figures for this period we can see that in 1890, Tenerife had 71 and Gran Canaria 189. In the 20 years to 1910, Tenerife had 79 while Gran Canaria had grown to 437. According to Ruiz Benetiz de Lugo, writing in 1904, this was down to: “In Tenerife, a certain politician owned the coal stores, within the port facilities, and hampered the installation of British companies, which he saw as a threat to his monopoly.” It’s nice to see that nothing changes. China is brimful of new millionaires 870,000, in fact - and many of them appear to be looking to invest in luxury cars, both modern and classic. To say that Mercedes Benz are overjoyed is to understate their mood. They report increased sales and Dieter Zetsche, of the parent company, Daimler, said: “China is almost exploding as far as the market is concerned.” Mercedes have seen increasing numbers of wealthy Chinese individuals paying up to £100,000 for their luxury cars, and the car-makers are not alone The largest luxury-car manufacturer in the world, BMW, saw sales figures rise 9.1% in July, with much of this attributed to the growth of demand from China. According to published figures, BMW sales in The People’s Republic surged 82% to 13,852 last month. Audi also reported a 7.7% increase, thanks to record deliveries in China. Zetsche forecast: “China has become the biggest automotive market but for us, as a company, it will be another 3-4 years before China becomes our largest market as well.” These results look set to rise further in the next five years, despite the significant taxes charged on high powered foreign vehicles in the country. Status symbols like luxury cars are now a major part of Chinese culture. This increasing interest is sure to filter through to investmentgrade classic cars, which offer the perfect blend of status symbol and investment opportunity. And with the huge disposable wealth available in China, investors are already looking at the future impact the Chinese will have on the classic-car market. In particular, the effect they will have on prices. This classic orginally cost just £2,098 (2,539 euros), and a good speciman will fetch around £37,000 (44,790 euros) today. High hopes for a promotion push THE disappointment of relegation for CD Tenerife fans on the last day of the season has faded. Well, slightly. All the talk of “If only Real Madrid had won at Malaga, we would have held on at Valencia …” It’s gone, and tomorrow, (Saturday), the campaign to get us back to La Liga starts. And make no bones about it, Tenerife are ready. History will judge whether it was the right thing to fire coach Jose Luis Oltra. He had his faults but boy, did he have a go. His five-man attacking line will long stay in the memory. He got the best out of Nino, Aragoneses, Omar and, in the end, Ayoze. But he never got to grips with the defence, which is not something that can be levelled at new manager Gonzalo Arconada. Where he failed at Numancia, he must succeed in Santa Cruz. It’s a bold appointment because there were stronger candidates. But the board need backing since they got it right with Oltra The new manager has been handed what looks like the strongest squad in a decade. Well, on paper anyway. The aforementioned Ayoze has gone to Sporting Gijon, Manolo Martinez to Recreativo and Culebras to Numancia. Angel pitches up at Elche, Richi moves back to Real Murcia , while Hector and Dinei have disappeared. So there has been a raft of new blood, and the signings look rock-solid. None more so than centreback Melli, who has joined from Real Betis. This is a real coup. The 26-year-old has 21 Spanish Under-21 caps, and his signing on a free could be the best of the season. He made over 180 appearances for Betis and was the club captain. But he had a major bust-up with the directors and was told he could leave.

Twenty-four hours later, he was at the Heliodoro on a three-year contract, and he cannot wait to start his career there. “I have settled in very well,” he said. “The players have been brilliant and I can feel the passion of the fans. It’s important to start well, and if we can, then we have a massive chance of going up.” He will be partnered by David Prieto at the back. Prieto joins from Sevilla, who have excellent links with Tenerife. Following the two-year success of Alfaro in Santa Cruz, another Sevilla player was always going to join, and the 6ft 1inch defender is here for the whole season. He has played the last two seasons at Xerez and was one of their best players in La Liga last campaign. At left-back will be Gerard Beranger, and his capture is another coup. He was 20092010 player of the season for Las Palmas, but Tenerife swooped to sign him on a free to move him to the west of the Canary Islands!
It has not gone down well in Gran Canaria, I can tell you. Like Melli and Prieto, he is the right age at 28. He likes to get forward and has pace. Throw in captain Marc Betran at rightback and you can see where the improvement is. In midfield,Antonio Hidalgo is back after a five-year hiatus. He played 91 games for Tenerife before spells at Malaga, Zaragoza, Osasuna and Albacete. He has already looked sharp in pre-season and should bolster the midfield in place of Roman Martinez. The departure of Ayoze means that Omar should have more game time, as will Iriome, back after a year’s loan at Huesca. Dani Kome and Juanlu have resigned and Natalio is the man to replace Alfaro. He comes in from Almeria and takes a step down, despite having offers from La Liga clubs. He has big boots to fill, but he is a different sort of player and will offer a physical hand to Nino. one more signing, and that will surely be a striker - ideally, someone with a bit of height! The big “signing” of the summer has been the retention of Nino. The striker had offers from many clubs, but none of them came close to Tenerife’s valuation. Also, Nino is very settled here. He recently became a dad, and he was very happy to sign a massive new four-year contract. It is rumoured to be worth 800,000 euros a year and makes him one of the highest-paid players in the league. Talking of re-signings, Tenerife did well to hang on to new wonderkid Josmar Zambrano. Fans have been waiting a few years for him to mature, and this is the season he gets a chance to shine.
Last week, Barcelona and Valancia offered him a contract, but he has shown loyalty by inking a new four-year deal. There is a buy-out clause of 12 million euros, and he will start with the B team in the third tier of Spanish football. But unlike Airam, he has stayed.
The squad looks balanced, the fans have bought a record number of season tickets - so what can go wrong? Well this is Tenerife. Things happen. Often! It can be argued that we are due a run of injuries, that we are now a big team and will be seen as a scalp. Our away form is still horrific. All are true. But we have a very deep squad and this is not the strongest division. Over the last few seasons, a few provincial sides have gone up and there are now two B teams as well. Some traditionally-strong sides have money worries, and the league is there for the taking. Tenerife should battle Real Betis for the title, with Elche, Xerez, Valladolid and Recerativo all chasing hard. Of the outsiders, Albacete have strengthened well and Alcorcon, who beat Real Madrid in the cup last season, may claim a few scalps. Over in Gran Canaria, Las Palmas will do well to simply survive. They are skint, almost Portsmouth-style, and they barely have a working squad. Shame! The season starts tomorrow and Tenerife travel to Girona, where they secured promotion 15 months ago. It’s the perfect start and, hopefully, Dani Kome can leave the field fully clothed this time! The first home match sees Salamanca visit Santa Cruz a week on Sunday.

OASIS Fm darts league players took a break from normal proceedings last Friday to battle it out for a place on the big doubles stage on Finals Night. The competition was spread between five venues, with 32 pairs entering the general event and 12 pairs in the ladies-only show. At Sundowners, the match of the night proved to be a high-scoring semi-final between Tam and John of the Suns and X-Men’s Graham and Alex, who forced themselves into a pulsating final against Gary and Wayne, of Bar 180. The 180 boys, at 2-1 up, came flying out with three tons on the trot and seemed to be home and dry. But Alex then hit back with a 140 and Graham checked out. With the match evenly balanced at 2-2, it was anyone’s game. However, the Golf

And at Toscales Bar (where the curry is hot!), Sergio and Dave, of the Suns, earned a Finals’ spot by beating Graham and Roly from Heroes 3-2 in the decider. The Heroes Bar draw threw up some real league heavyweights all at the same venue. Game of the night was a scintillating semi-final between Steve and Bubbles, of the Phoenix and Luc and Jorge, of Cafe Rood. Steve’s 180 was matched immediately by Luc, and then Bubbles joined in the fun with one of his own! The most popular and unpopular trips have been uncovered by a survey conducted by the Lonely Planet travel guide book, which questioned 3,500 travellers. Despite millions of holidaymakers enjoying “staycations” in Britain this year, mainly because of financial restraints following the recession, researchers found some of country’s most beautiful locations were being ignored. The most “under-rated” experience in Britain is walking along Scotland’s “wild beaches”, such as those in Sandwood Bay, on the north-west tip of the country. Other under-valued adventures include hunting for fossils along the 95-mile Jurassic Coast in Dorset, a World Heritage site,

Tom Hall, the Lonely Planet's travel editor, says: “Capturing the magic of Britain sometimes involves getting away from the crowds, getting off the many tried and well-trodden paths and finding other great places to visit. “It really highlights how worthwhile it is to venture away from some of the best known places and sights to discover what else is on offer.” An all-inclusive resort in Benidorm at the height of the school summer holidays was considered the worst idea for 25% of travellers, who say they would refuse the trip, “even if you paid me”. Other “hated” experiences
included drinking at a bar in San Antonio, Ibiza, late on a Saturday night, or visiting Madame Tussauds in London on a bank holiday Monday. Staying at the Butlins holiday park in Bognor Regis, West Sussex, and even flying from Heathrow Terminal 3 at 7pm on a Friday night were also given the thumbs-down. And 25% of holiday-makers, when asked what would make their holiday a better experience - excluding “more sun-
shine” - wanted cheaper train travel. The categories, ranging from food and culture to journeys and activities, were based on experiences featured in Lonely Planet magazines, as well as incidents involving staff. Mr Hall said the results showed “people continue to be surprised at finding some incredibly beautiful and varied places in Britain”. And he urged travellers to have more “imagination” when it came to holidays. He added: “Many people are
aware of the big-ticket items in this country, but these places do not always sum up what is a great thing to do.” The online poll also found that the greatest journey for Britons would be the TransSiberian Railway from Russia to Beijing, while the best cultural experience would be attending the mighty, magical Rio Carnival in Brazil, rated the world’s best.. Watching motor-racing’s Monaco Formula One Grand Prix live was voted the best sporting experience, while a Thai beach would be the best place to relax. Actor and travel documentary-maker Michael Palin, the former Monty Python star, was viewed as the ideal travelling companion. “We are better travelled than ever before, and better informed about the world - and that, in turn, inspires us to explore farther and wider,” said Mr Hall. One in ten property sales for houses worth £500,000 to £1 million in the first six months of 2010 was the result of families and relationships splitting up, according to a new survey. The rate is almost twice that for the same period in 2009, when 6% of house sales were put down to divorce. Property experts said it was because of rising house prices in the mid-range of the market, allowing couples who were hampered by the lower prices last year to consider splitting up.
Lucian Cook, director of Savills residential research, who commissioned the survey, said: “Greater fluidity in the lower tiers of prime market has allowed divorces to proceed. “Regrettably, at this level, a house sale can often be inevitable; hence, the increase in divorce-related sales, from 6% of this mar-
ket segment in 2009 to 10% so far this year.” Wealthier families are less likely to sell the marital home to accommodate a divorce because one partner is more likely to buy or rent another property instead.
