German TV series having a Loro fun! TOP Tenerife tourist attraction Loro Parque was transformed into a real TV studio for six months - for the Germans! The parrot park, in Puerto de la Cruz, has become the main stage for a long-running series on German TV, which starts on Tuesday (7th September), at prime time. The daily show, to be broadcast on the country’s leading station, ARD, will reveal how the animals live. It will also depict the dayto-day happenings behind the scenes of the most recognised environmental park in the whole of Spain. The TV series, filmed between January and June, of this year, will be shown at prime time from next Tuesday (7th September). Leading roles in this huge project are all played by the park’s animal inhabitants, supported by resident biologists, veterinarians and keepers. A spokesperson for the company which shot the series said: “We have captured first-hand the beauty and majesty of the park, and the different activities that are operational every day. “We have combined these stories with the Island landscapes, and its outstanding eco-systems and natural parks. “We have also emphasised the privileged climate enjoyed by the animals and people involved.” It is such a shame the series is not being shown on a local Tenerife channel because it really does show the Island at its sunniest,
colourful best. Yet such is the splendour that it could entice more German tourists, especially families, to the Island. Altogether, 40 one-hour episodes have been recorded in high definition, with the best technology avail-

able, to ensure the success of the huge project. The Germans flew in a complete production team and spent half the year recording, producing and even editing the series, directly in the park. The spokesperson added: “We did the entire produc-
tion at Loro Parque. It was something exceptional and we have never before carried this out in similar productions.” Patricia Delponti, Director of Communications at Loro Parque, said: “This series is a great boost for the international promotion of our island. “It has also been a great, dedicated effort by the German team, and we are convinced that with the high quality of its content, and its unique settings, it will become a real magnet for
attracting visitors to the island. “It shows our excellence in facilities, environmental responsibility and beauty in every landscape, scenery and the activities promoted in the series.” Loro Parque began life in 1972 as a zoo featuring 150 parrots. It now boasts 3,000, with over 300 species, and is acknowledged as having the most important collection in the world. But the park is far moved from those early days because it is now home to dolphins, sea lions, gorillas,
chimpanzees, tigers, flamingos, alligators, sharks and many other attractions. It also has the world’s largest penguin population living in the Penguinarium, which displays a reproduction Antarctic climate and has 12 tons of snow falling every day. Such is the variety, and number of shows featuring dolphins, orca whales and sea lions, that Loro Park is rightly regarded as the second biggest attraction in Tenerife, after Mount Teide. Joint Spanish-UK police operation lands British gang and drugs haul organisation involved in drug trafficking on Ibiza. Following analysis of documents and information obtained, SOCA were contacted and worked together with the Guardia Civil to identify the group operating in Ibiza, which was directed from the UK. Earlier this summer, the people now under arrest were detected and several surveillance measures were put in place. Police believed they were trying to build the infrastructure necessary for drug distribution in Ibiza. Gang members visited the island regularly to supervise and collect the proceeds. The UK-based drugs group rented several properties on Ibiza, including luxury villas for the ringleaders. The dealers, who were put up in apartments in tourist resorts, retained various quantities of drugs for daily distribution, but the bulk of them were kept in secure houses which they did not occupy. Young “public relations” people were employed in nightclubs to distribute drugs and ensure similar prices were charged at each point of sale, depending on the time and place. The drugs were hidden in UK cars brought on to the island, and in the luggage of British tourists coming into Ibiza airport. A major breakthrough came on 8th August when a young British woman was caught trying to smuggle three kilos of cocaine through the airport.
A HUGE drugs haul, and the British gang involved, have been seized in Ibiza during a joint operation between the Spanish police and a specialist UK crime-buster organisation. The Guardia Civil and the UK Serious and Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) were elated to have rounded up the gang after searching 12 houses. In all, 25 people were held as part of Operation Arrow (Operación Flecha), together with 38,000 ecstasy tablets, four kilos of cocaine, 250gms of ketamine, four litres of GHB ( a popular but dangerous club drug), 50gms of crystal MDMA (ecstasy), 1kg of MCATS (a mix of various drugs; also known as mephedrone) and cash amounting to 56,000 euros. The UK-led gang had two branches in Ibiza - one in charge of establishing contacts on the island and the other responsible for distributing the drugs. The Guardia Civil arrested 20 Britons, two Irish people, one Czech, one Slovak and a Spaniard, all alleged to be members of the island’s most active drug organisation. They were said to be involved in the distribution of ecstasy tablets and other drugs near nightclubs and other leisure areas. The investigation began a year ago following Operation Trafalgar, when the Civil Guard dismantled a British

FOR THOSE wishing to stay one step ahead of the competition thinking outside the box is the key and that’s exactly what one local newspaper has done. Forget your HD’S, LCD’S, Digital and any other ‘techy’ acronym you want to come up with, an evening newspaper in Swindon has come up with an ingenious way to beat a League One football club’s ban on photographers. Instead of real-life pictures of their team thumping Southampton, readers of the Swindon Advertiser were treated to Subbuteo recreations. The newspaper resorted to the tiny plastic figures so fans could savour their team’s 3-0 win last week. They were treated to five key moments of action from the game, sports writer Andy Marshall said: “We were left unable to print images of the match unless we paid Southampton for their own copies. “But, along with almost every paper - regional and national - across the country, we boycotted that idea

the Puerto de la Cruz tourist attraction building up a 40part series, to be broadcast in Germany daily from Tuesday. The parrots, sea lions, dolphins, sharks and all the other species at the park are stars of the show, which
means the resident biologists, veterinarians and keepers have to make do with supporting roles. A spokesperson for the company which shot the series said: “We have captured first-hand the beauty and majesty of the park, and
the different activities that are operational every day.” And looking ahead, Patricia Delponti, Director of Communications at Loro Parque, said: “This series is a great boost for the international promotion of our island.”
and decided to come up with something original and innovative instead.” “Several members of the sports desk raided their parents’ attics and came up with quite a collection of items from the childhood game. “After a quick paint job we were able to go back to our youths and recreate the key moments from the match.” Andy, who was at the game in Southampton, sent back pictures from his mobile phone to make sure the Subbuteo re-enactments were as accurate as possible. If the photography ban is still in place when the two teams meet in the league next February, Andy says the Subbuteo players could be brought out of retirement again. The Swindon Advertiser is not the only newspaper to find a novel way of beating Southampton at their own game. One in Plymouth commissioned a series of Roy of the Rovers-style cartoons while another in Bournemouth Echo reprinted black and white photos from the 1920s. So the moral of this story is that anything is possible, it just needs to be thought through!

The Emperor asked the Prime Minister to convey warm greetings to the King of Spain. The Prime Minister, meanwhile, has sent greetings to Emperor Akihito from Don Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, who made his last official visit to Japan in 2008. The Japanese Emperor wanted to transfer their solidarity and sympathy over the recent death in Afghanistan of two police officers and a Spanish translator. As protocol, the meeting was not to discuss politics or economics. Also. the Prime Minister visited the Embassy of Spain in Tokyo, where he met with a group of Spanish living in Japan. The Prime Minister wanted to congratulate all the Spanish that “contribute their efforts to progress in Japan.” Rodriguez Zapatero has said that “during this visit we will try to improve human relations, both political and economic relations between Spain and Japan.” He reminded those present that “any relationship has to start at the rapprochement between the people, by the understanding, communication, ultimately, the human side, and from this relationship is built cultural, economic and politics.“ The President stressed the need for our country to maintain good relations with Japan. Rodriguez Zapatero has said Spain is “one country, above all, open to friendship and co-operation with all countries in the world. And with Japan in a unique way, as it plays a decisive role in Asia and in the international context.” The Chief Executive also
referred to the climate change challenge facing the two countries together. Rodriguez Zapatero has said that “another major goal in the world and the economy
have ahead is to make a planet that we do not ever apologise for having exhausted all natural resources, its energy sources, their habitat. If we have any challenge,
as countries Japan and Spain, is to address seriously the fight against climate change, protect the environment and rational use of energy. “

Eurozone growth of 1% confirmed This followed four months of falling claims, but was entirely expected as the summer tourism season comes to an end. The Spanish unemployment rate remains at about 20%. Figures released earlier this week showed unemployment in the wider eurozone
ACCORDING to figures just released the eurozone economy grew by 1% between April and June. The initial estimate was published last month, showing stronger growth than expected, largely due to strong exports that were boosted by a weaker euro. The German economy, which grew by 2.2% over the three months, helped to drive the zone’s overall growth. Interestingly the figures highlight that the euro zone as it is termed is growing faster than the US economy, which only saw growth of 0.4% during the quarter. Exports grew by 4.4%, exactly the same amount in percentage terms as the increase in imports, the zone’s official statistics agency, Eurostat, said. Growth in the eurozone was also boosted by a rise in house-

Oil rig explodes in the Gulf of Mexico hold spending, which was 0.5% higher than in the previous quarter. Eurostat also confirmed that growth in the UK between April and June was 1.2%, while growth was 0.6% in France, 0.4% in Italy and 0.2% in Spain. Sadly, the Greek economy shrank by 1.5% and was the only economy in the euro zone
to contract during the period. “It’s an externally led recovery - if you look at export growth it’s very, very strong,” said Stefan Schneider at Deutsche Bank. However, he questioned the strength of household spending, despite the modest rise in the last quarter. “If you look at private con-
sumption, this is still very modest given the labour market situation in various European countries, which is not very positive for consumption.” Figures also released last Thursday showed a rise of 61,000 in unemployment benefit claims in Spain in August, as short-term summer contracts began to expire.
AS WE GO to print another oil rig has exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, west of the platform where the last awful BP disaster occurred. All 13 people working on board the oil rig are alive and have been accounted for,
the coastguard has said. Lousiana radio has said the rig is the Vermilion Oil rig 380, owned by Houstonbased Mariner Energy, which is reported not to be an active well. There are currently no sightings of oil in the water The exact circumstances of the accident are not yet known.

Doctors call for clampdown on cigarette sales
DOCTORS have called on the Spanish government to ban cigarette sales in machines in bars and from kiosks. The National Committee for the Prevention of Tobacco Addiction also wants smoking to be banished from children’s parks and on pavements near colleges and hospitals. And police should have the power to fine those who defy the law. According to doctors, numerous point-of-sale machines increases the
accessibility of tobacco to youngsters, and they want the number of hotel rooms made available for smokers in the forthcoming new legislation halved to 15%. They are also concerned about smoking on terraces, where there are obstacles which stop the free circulation of the air. Tobacco is reckoned to kill some 50,000 people in Spain each year, with 2% working in the hostelry sector. Changes to the 2005 tobacco law is now at the amendment state in parliament, and the government plans to introduce the new legislation on 1st January 2011.

Mobile phone companies lacking that ring of truth A DAMNING report on customer-service offered by mobile phone operators in Spain criticises every company. The Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU), says that not one of them has a service capable of helping users, and that the sector generates most complaints. The 11 companies studied Vodafone, Movistar, Orange, R, Pepephone, Yoigo, Másmovil, Happy Movil, Simyo, Euskatel and Carrefour - made mistakes in responding to six questions put to them by the researchers. They included the subjects of 902 tariffs, calls abroad, internet coverage, and how to obtain the PUK number
Page 08
when the PIN number has been entered incorrectly. The OCU said the time taken by some operators to give the answers was “interminable”: Happy Movil took 15 minutes, Vodafone 26, Simyo 51, Orange 69, and Telefónica’s Movistar nearly two hours. In addition, the research shows that in Movistar’s case, it was normal for the call to hang up, be engaged, or end in an inescapable loop of automatic options. All the operators, with the exception of Happy Movil, Másmovil and Yoigo, were guilty of that last complaint. The OCU ended up with a tariff which was “far worse” than the previous one when ringing to find a cheaper contract with Orange and Vodafone Only R admitted to limited
coverage in rural areas when that was the case, while the rest gave “confused or erroneous” information, or did not answer. Yoigo were the only operators to give complete information to the questions, while the rest gave partial answers only, “some times through lack of interest, and in others in a hurry to end the call”. Orange and Movistar gave “completely incorrect” information on the cost of connecting to the internet when abroad. When asked for the PUK, said the OCU: “Few operators asked for the additional information of name and DNI number to ensure that the phone owner was calling, and to avoid a possible fraudulent use of the phone.”

call for Jobless queues Unions all-out strike growing again THE end of summer jobs in Spain led to the unemployed list expanding by more than 61,000 last month to nearly four million people. It represented a 1.56% rise, from the previous month to 3.97 million, and on an annual basis, the figure was up 9.3%, or 340,581.The rise followed four months of falling unemployment.

Worryingly, the European statistics office, Eurostat, said on Tuesday that Spain’s unemployment rate in July was 20.3% - the highest among the 16 nations using the euro single currency, There is a 10% average for the entire region. The Spanish government attempted to sweep the latest figures under the carpet, saying that the jobless toll traditionally rises in August, as seasonal contracts and summer sales end, and big
businesses are closed for the holidays. Finance Minister Elena Salgado said the figures were “much better” than last August, when there were 84,985 additional unemployed, and added: “In view of the seasonal context, the figure is less bad.”. total rose 1.7% in August. Maravillas Rojo, Secretary General for Employment said: “Today’s figures show that the labour market is beginning to stabilise and so, in the coming months, we can begin to have better news on unemployment.” The Spanish economy, Europe’s fifth-largest, fell into recession in 2008 through the collapse of a property boom, but has recovered slightly so far this year. Inditex Deputy Chairman and CEO Pablo Isla said: “Internet and the world of social networking are indispensable tools and extraordinary channels for communication, and fit perfectly with our Group’s philosophy”. Arch rival H&M first put its business online in the Netherlands in 2006 and also plans to launch a site in Britain in September.
SPAIN’S leading unions, CCOO and UGT, have called for a General Strike across the country on 29th September. They feel there is no chance of the government halting the labour reforms legislation - which is what they are protesting about - knowing they will definitively be
approved by the government next Thursday (9th Sept). The two union organisation secretaries, Antonio del Campo and José Javier Cubillo, accused the PNV and CiU parties of not voting against the labour reforms which, they believed, worsened the workers’ conditions.
Moped kids are forced to wait until next year YOUNGSTERS itching to get their hands on a moped received bad news on Wednesday when the Spanish government raised the minimum age for riding a 50cc bike from 14 to 15. And moped manufacturers fear a drop in sales as a result of the 1st September ruling. The minimum-age issue was first mooted two years ago, but the government decided to postpone it until now to
give those affected time to adapt. Jordi Jané, spokesman for left-wing party CiU, called for the period of grace to be extended, stressing that riding a moped was a good, early-learning basis for driving a car. He believes it can mean fewer motor accidents among the young when they eventually pass their driving tests. But the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) said the move could help reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries seen among moped riders.
Spain puts on a top-glass act THE Spanish have proved they’ve got bottle in abundance by recycling more glass in 2010 already than in the whole of last year, More than 4,000 tonnes extra has been delivered to bottle banks across the country, which means that more than 350,000 tonnes on top of the 2009 figure has been deposited. Non-profit-making association Ecovidrio, which recycles glass, handled at least 750,000 tonnes last year,
while around 70% of households say they use bottle banks. But a survey by Ecovidrio reveals that medicine bottles, plus broken crockery and tiles are dropped into the bottle banks by mistake. Ecovidrio, which says 100% of all glass deposited in bottle banks is recycled, points out that only bottles and jars are acceptable, and not drinking vessels, medication containers or any other kind of breakable materials.

New car sales plummet again
NEW car sales in Spain were down drastically in August for the second month running, following a sales-tax rise and the end of the Scrappage Scheme. Sales fell by a whopping 23.8%, hard on the heels of July’s 24.1% decline. It meant that August’s total of 44,578 new cars sold was the lowest number for that month since records began 21 years ago. The total was down from July’s 82,167 and 58,509 in August 2009, according to figures released by Anfac, the auto-makers association. Anfac blames the sharp drop on a 2% sales-tax increase, introduced on 1st July, and the government’s car Scrappage Scheme, which
had boosted sales. The decline will fuel doubts about the ability of the Spanish economy, Europe’s fifth largest, to maintain its timid recovery from its worst recession in decades, when government stimulus measures end. Spain’s gross domestic product expanded by an annual rate of 0.2% in the second quarter, following growth of 0.1% in the first quarter, when the country emerged from recession. The country entered its worst recession in decades at the end of 2008, and the Spanish government responded by adopting one of the largest stimulus plans in Europe, based on tax cuts and industry subsidies. But with the government under pressure to rein in its growing public deficit, many of these measures have ended - or are about to.
Ryanair’s threat to Catalan’s airports
RYANAIR chief Michael port, El Prat, on his O’Leary flew into company’s maiden pasBarcelona’s main air- senger trip there on Tuesday, and issued an immediate warning. He told the authorities that his Irish airline would reduce their flights to other Catalan airports, Reus and Girona, if landing taxes were not reduced. He called on the AENA (Spanish Airports Authority) to reduce charges at smaller air-
ports, and noted that in Lleida the airline paid nothing, like Vueling, its only competitor there. Ryanair already receives more than eight million euros a year in grants for its operations at secondary airports in Cataluña. The company now flies to 23 destinations, from Barcelona’s Terminal 2 - 11 of them in Spain and 12 in Europe, including Paris and Milan. Meanwhile, Cádiz will find
itself without international air connections, despite a ninemillion-euro investment by the Ministry for Development in a new terminal at Jerez. The terminal is intended to double the capacity of the airport to three million passengers a year. But from November, only the Flyniki weekly flight to Vienna will remain operational because Ryanair considers Jerez unprofitable in the winter. Air Berlin is also planning to drop its services.

Ten Afghanistan workers killed in Nato airstrike TEN civilians have been killed in a Nato airstrike on vehicles carrying election workers in northern Afghanistan, according to Afghan President Hamid Karzai.President Karzai strongly condemned the strike on Thursday, which he said had killed 10 campaigners working for a candidate in this month’s election. Nato said the attack, in the northeastern province of Takhar’s Rustaq district, was believed to have killed or wounded at least 12 insurgents, including two commanders. The alliance said it was aware of President Karzai’s
claims and was investigating. News of the attack coincided with the arrival in Kabul of US Defence Secretary Robert Gates. Civilian casualties caused by foreign forces while hunting militants have been a major source of tension between Karzai and his Western backers. Gates is to meet General David Petraeus, commander of US and Nato forces in Afghanistan and US ambassador Karl Eikenberry, as well as visiting US troops. A statement issued by the presidential palace said: “The president of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan... strongly condemned this attack, saying air bombardments in the villages of Afghanistan will only end up killing civilians and will not be effective in the fight against terrorism.” At about the same time, a statement issued by the Nato-led International
Security Assistance Force said coalition forces had conducted a precision air strike against a senior member of the militant group the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan. It said coalition aircraft conducted a precision strike against one vehicle travelling in a six-car convoy. It said “initial reflections” indicated eight to 12 insurgents were killed or wounded, including a Taliban commander. “We’re aware of the allegations that this strike caused civilian casualties and we’ll do our best to get to the bottom of the accusations,” the statement quoted US Marine Corps Major General David Garza as saying. “What I can say is these vehicles were nowhere near a populated area and we’re confident this strike hit only the targeted vehicle after days of tracking the occupants’ activity.”
‘Horror’ as RBS sack 3,500 more ROYAL BANK of Scotland is cutting a further 3,500 British jobs in a move a major trade union has described as a “horror story”. Part-nationalised RBS said the losses would go across back office and IT functions in the business services arm. The cutbacks - part of plans to more than halve the bank’s administration centres across the UK - come on top of the division’s 9,000 job losses announced last year. The bank, which is 83% owned by the taxpayer, will close 12 of its business services centres in Britain and put three under review. Having to cut jobs is the most difficult part of our work to rebuild RBS and repay taxpayers for their support. RBS said the latest jobs cull would start next year and run through to the end of 2012. The cuts were announced just a week after RBS
revealed 14 of its 27 offices in the Churchill and Direct Line insurance arm were being axed. Trade union Unite’s Rob MacGregor described the announcement as a “horror story”. He said it would be a particularly “bitter pill for staff to swallow” as RBS has decided to move 500 of the jobs offshore to the Far East, India and the US. RBS said it had almost completed the 9,000 job losses first revealed last year, of which 4,500 were in the UK. The business services division previously employed around 45,000 globally. The bank will retain 10 back office centres, but those in the following sites will be

affected: Leeds, Bolton, Enfield, Harrogate, Bristol, Borehamwood, Liverpool, Milton Keynes, Plymouth, Telford, Bradford and Norwich. RBS said around a third of the job cuts come as a direct result of the sale of 318 branches to Santander, which it was ordered to offload by the European Commission. In a statement, the firm said: “Having to cut jobs is the most difficult part of our work to rebuild RBS and repay taxpayers for their support. “We continue to make efficiencies across our business and adjust our plans in line with the divestments we have been required to make by the European Union.”

Cheryl to reveal intimate photos ON THE back of heavyweight autobiographies released this year from the likes of Tony Blair and Alastair Campbell, the British public is in for a treat of a similar nature courtesy of Cheryl Cole. Everyone's favourite Girls Aloud singer is releasing her first official book, due to chronicle her super glam life over the past year. And what a year it has been for Cole, now one of the world's most photographed women... She has had a Number One single, Number One album and was a judge on the UK's most successful television programme X Factor. As for the year ahead, she will soon be releasing her second solo album. Speaking about the book, entitled Through My Eyes, Cole gushed: "Sometimes I find things happen so quickly, it's possible to forget all those personal moments that
Page 12
make up the amazing experiences I've had over the last year. "This book is filled with pictures that capture those moments, my memories and the people I'm closest to. I'm thrilled to see it all together for the first time." The book is set to include previously unseen photographs from Cheryl's own personal collection of favourites. But it has not been all happy times for the singer and it is doubtful the book will make any reference to the breakdown of her marriage to Chelsea and England footballer Ashley. Instead, it will focus on a variety of better times, from the recording studio in Los Angeles to backstage in Dublin on the opening night of her tour with the Black Eyed Peas. Published by Transworld Publishers, it is also said to contain behind the scenes images from the X Factor and from the red carpets of the music industry's top awards ceremonies. The book will be published on 30 September 2010
Pakistan’s trio pull out of England tour THE THREE Pakistan cricketers at the centre of spot-betting allegations have maintained their innocence after withdrawing from the rest of the team’s England tour. Test captain Salman Butt and bowlers Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif vowed to clear their names at a meeting in London with Pakistan officials. Speaking after the talks High Commissioner Wajid Shamsul Hasanwiut said the players were pulling out of the tour because of the “mental torture” of the scandal. “The three players have said that they are extremely disturbed by what has happened in the past week, especially in regard of their alleged involvement in the crime,” Mr Hasan told reporters. “They mentioned that they are entirely innocent in the whole episode and shall defend their innocence as such.
“They maintain that on account of the mental torture which has deeply affected them, they are not in the right frame of mind to play the remaining matches. “Therefore, they have requested that the Pakistan Cricket Board not consider them for the remaining matches.” Asked later if he believed the trio were innocent, Hasan replied: “Yes, I believe in their innocence.” It had already been announced the trio would miss Pakistan’s match against Somerset, a warm-up for the team’s Twenty20 matches against England which start on Sunday. The trio were questioned at the Pakistan High Commission over a claim Mazhar Majeed, a 35-year-old agent for several Pakistan players, took £150,000 to arrange deliberate no-balls. The News of the World newspaper said Mr Majeed arranged for the no-balls to be bowled at precise points in last week’s Fourth Test against England.
The information would be of enormous value to the spot-betting industry, where money is wagered on specific incidents in matches. After the story came out, Mr Majeed, who also owns Croydon Athletic Football Club, was arrested by Scotland Yard detectives and later released on police bail. The three players were questioned by police at the weekend at their London hotel. The England and Wales Cricket Board are understood to have lobbied for the players to be stood down, by whatever means, from the forthcoming limited-overs matches. England’s players meanwhile are reportedly reluctant to line up against a Pakistan team containing the men, the chief executive of the Professional Cricketers’ Association said. “The England players understand it is important the games go ahead and they will be professional but they would or will find it really difficult to play against the guys directly implicated,” Angus
Last month was the coldest August for 17 years in the UK, with a complete absence of “hot days”, weather experts have said. Heavy rain across large swathes of the country and an exceptionally cloudy few weeks in the South East put a dampener on the end of the summer holiday. Last week there were several “notably” cold nights and by the end of the month there had not been a single day when the mercury rose above 27C. The month also saw the chill-
iest temperature recorded in August for 23 years - 12.8C in Edgbaston, Birmingham. Data showed rainfall in England and Wales was almost one and a half times the average amount, at 106.2mm. In the last 100 years, only 22 Augusts have been wetter. But sun-seekers were not entirely disappointed and many flocked to the beaches to soak up the rays. In Weybourne, Norfolk, tem-
Porter told the Daily Telegraph. Haroon Lorgat, of the International Cricket Council (ICC), said he hopes there will be “some sort of a conclusion” to its own investigation by the weekend. He said “prompt and decisive action” would be taken against anyone who sought to harm the game’s integrity and they could be thrown out of the sport. However, he said “a couple of individuals that might have got caught up in corrupt practices” should not bring the entire game to a standstill. The claims are the latest in a string of match-fixing allegations to dog the Pakistan team since the 1990s. Three people have also been arrested by customs officials in connection with betting allegations against Pakistani players. Two men and a woman, all from London, were questioned on Monday as part of an investigation into money laundering before being released on bail, HM Revenue and Customs said.
Awful August peratures soared to 26.7C, but failed to reach the scorching levels of July, when they hit the 30s in some areas. Figures showed England and Wales enjoyed 148 hours of sunshine this month - 25% less than average. Meanwhile, Scotland saw 142 hours of sunshine, meeting its average, and Northern Ireland had better weather than usual, clocking up 192 hours of sunshine.

UK house prices dip
THE NUMBER of people looking to buy their first home fell sharply during the past year - as house prices edged lower in August. Only 22% of potential buyers were looking to purchase their first home in July, down from 31% during the same month of 2009, according to property website Rightmove.co.uk. The average cost of a home also dropped by 0.3% during August to £158,300, compared with a 0.1% decrease in July, property intelligence group Hometrack said. Rightmove warned that the proportion of first-time buyers was half the level needed
for a healthy housing market. The group’s director Miles Shipside said: “With the number of prospective buyers at the bottom of the chain being half of normal levels, the question sellers further up the chain will be asking is, ‘Who will be at the bottom of my chain?”‘ There is growing weakness on the demand side - a weakness which represents more than just a seasonal blip. The availability of mortgages continued to be people’s main concern about buying a home. Many first-time buyers quizzed in the survey (55%) said mortgage-related issues, like raising a deposit, were among their biggest worries. But people were less concerned about house price falls, with 73% saying they

thought prices would be around the same or higher in 12 months’ time. The price decline in August was driven by a drop in the number of people looking to move home, with demand for housing falling for the second month in a row by 2.2%, Hometrack said. At the same time, the number of new properties on the market increased, with estate agents reporting a 2.4% jump in the number of homes they had on their books. The change in conditions has seen the average time a property takes to sell increase to 8.9 weeks, the highest level for more than a year, Hometrack said. Sellers are also getting a lower proportion of their asking price, dropping to 93.5% from 94% in July.
TV for over-50s launches THE UK’s first music and popular culture TV channel dedicated to the so-called “vintage age” is going on air. Broadcasting 24 hours a day, Vintage TV will cater to the over-50s audience, covering pop music, culture and fashion from the 1940s to the 1980s. Accessible on platforms Sky and Freesat, it is set to reach more than 10 million households and an audience of 21 million. Presenters include Paul Gambaccini, Tony Blackburn, Lesley-Ann Jones and Kim Wilde.
Vintage TV creates special videos for songs in the charts prior to 1976, before the era of promotional videos. They include Not Fade Away by the Rolling Stones, featuring classic archive footage of the band, and If I Can Dream by Elvis Presley, played across footage of Martin Luther King’s fight for racial equality. It has signed a deal with Getty Images to use some of its 360,000 still images and 8,000 hours of video content. It will also use archive material from ITN, Reuters and the BBC. Vintage TV founder and chief executive David Pick told Sky News Online: “There is no other destination channel like this around.
03 September 2010 - 09 September 2010
“It will feature music videos from those decades when music videos weren’t around. Nobody has thought of a way of creating these videos until now.” Despite the channel being aimed at the over-50s market, Pick is keen to attract other age groups. “It’s fascinating stuff something no one who grew up in the 1940s - 1980s has ever experienced before. “But of course, this shouldn’t disqualify other age groups and people who want to experience the great music that was created in these eras,” Pick added. Vintage TV will be broadcast on Freesat channel 515 and Sky channel 369.

Operation San Lorenzo THE 33 miners trapped 2,000ft underground in Chile will have to move more than 3,000 tons of rock to ensure their rescue is successful, experts have said. While the trapped men are in high spirits after being sent food and clothing, they still face continuous work to remove rock that will fall as the rescue tunnel is bored. The digging operation codenamed Operation San Lorenzo after the martyred Christian saint - has begun, but will take between three and four months to complete. Experts have voiced concerns about the hard work the men will have to undertake to help rescuers, particularly if they are already in a fragile mental state. Chilean officials say rock will begin to fall into the area where the men are trapped as the drilling nears them - in about a month’s time. They will have to work in non-stop shifts to remove it

with wheelbarrows and industrial sweepers. “The thing that concerns me is the welfare of workers, their mental state. That will be real tough,” said Alex Gryska, a mine rescue manager with the Canadian government. “From a health perspective, it’s hot down there. They’re talking about working 24/7 in 85 degrees for two months. Their mental state for that work will be critical.” The men, aged between 19 and 63, have already spent more time trapped than any other miners in modern memory. The only other miners to have spent almost as long underground were three
Chinese men rescued in July last year. They endured 25 days in a flooded shaft, chewing on coal and surrounded by their 13 dead colleagues. “They’re facing the most unusual rescue that has ever been dealt with,” said Dave Feickert, director of KiaOra, a mine safety consulting firm in New Zealand that has worked to improve China’s dangerous mines. A 31-ton drill has already been deployed to dig through solid rock down to the miners and replacement parts are being ordered in case the drill sustains any damage during the operation. Even once the tunnel is
secure, bringing the men to the surface will be a timeconsuming task. They will be lifted out one by one in a purpose-built metal cage - a trip that will take three hours for each miner. To extract all 33 men will take more than four days as long as there are no problems. “Nothing of this magnitude has happened before, it’s absolutely unheard of,” said Mr Gryska. But Mark Popernack, an American miner who survived the 2002 Quecreek Mine accident in Pennsylvania, said when the men emerge “they’ll feel like they’re being born again”.
THE CAREER of racing driver Ben Collins as Top Gear’s The Stig is likely to have skidded to a halt following his High Court battle with the BBC, sources are saying. The 35-year-old, from Bristol, is thought to be highly unlikely to return as the show’s mystery driver after he was unmasked on Wednesday. The court case has also cast doubt on whether the character will reappear at all in the next series of the programme. However, Jana Bennett, Director of BBC Vision, said: “Viewers of Top Gear shouldn’t worry. The Stig lives on and will be back in the new year.” The next series of the programme, which is watched by an estimated 350m people worldwide, goes out in December and an announcement is unlikely before then. Bookmakers are already taking bets on who the next Stig will be. Nigel Mansell is a favourite at 10/1. The identity of the driver
has been a badly-kept secret, having already been published in the media last year. Collins’ identity was revealed after the BBC lost a legal move to block the publication by HarperCollins of an autobiography which would unmask Mr Collins’s identity. A spokesman for the corporation, which claimed the book would breach confidentiality obligations, said: “The Top Gear audience has always made it clear they enjoyed the mystery around the identity of The Stig. “The BBC brought this action as we believe it is vital to protect the character of The Stig.”

www.canarianweekly.com THE FIRST direct peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians in nearly two years are getting under-way in Washington. Barack Obama inaugurated the new peace process saying “too much blood” had already been spilled in the Middle East The US President hosted a dinner in the White House at which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas sat at the table. Jordan’s King Abdullah and Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak were there in supporting roles. Before dinner the President said he was “cautiously hopeful” of the chances of success. “Do we have the wisdom and the courage to walk the path of peace?” Mr Obama asked of each of the four Middle East leaders seated next to him. Mr Netanyahu responded with a personal appeal to his Palestinian counterpart. He stressed the need for a peace that guaranteed Israeli security on a day that saw four Jewish settlers buried. They were killed in the West Bank by Hamas, which opposes these talks.
Middle East peace talks under-way But Mr Abbas also vowed to make these talks work. “We will spare no effort and we will work diligently and tirelessly to ensure these negotiations achieve their cause,” he said. If the settlement impasse
can be overcome, success or failure will depend on the chemistry between Mr Abbas and Mr Netanyahu and their ability to find a dynamic that has for so long eluded peace efforts between their two peoples.
Cowell fuming over schedule clash
Only hours before the White House ceremony, another two Israelis had been attacked by Palestinian gunmen on a West Bank road, leaving both wounded. Expectations have never been lower among the press and the Israeli public, one veteran of over a decade of peace efforts tells me, summing up the mood among his peers.
03 September 2010 - 09 September 2010
King Abdullah warned there would be more attempts to sabotage this new peace process. These talks begin with low expectations. It has taken 20 months to simply bring the Israelis and Palestinians face to face in negotiations again. Even before the first words are uttered, the negotiations are threatened by a row over
Jewish settlements on occupied land. The Israelis are indicating they are unlikely to renew a ten-month reduction in settlement construction. The Palestinians say they cannot stay in talks without one. Both Mr Abbas and Mr Mubarak have called on Israel to freeze settlement construction.
STRICTLY Come Dancing and X Factor are set to clash in the TV schedules for the second year running and Simon Cowell isn’t happy. The music mogul has ranted at the BBC for putting Strictly at the same time as The X Factor on Saturdays and Sundays. Cowell, 50, has argued it is the wrong move for two of the most popular shows on television to be shown simultaneously. He’s also mocked the Beeb’s more senior Strictly audience by suggesting it should go out around 5pm, so they can rest after it’s over.
“I would suggest they put it on a bit earlier in the afternoon because their audience is older. I am being serious. Then they can have a nap afterwards if it finishes at six,” Cowell quipped. Last year Simon admitted his mother complained about the schedule clash. “This is nothing more than being pathetic, childish and doing a disservice to people who pay the licence fee,” he said. “We don’t pay the licence fee for people to play games with ratings. It is completely and utterly wrong.

Blocko the legend is coming to Sintillate! SINTILLATE Tenerife is proud to present legendary British club Dj Brandon Block next Thursday (9th September). Sintillate’s Sunset Party starts at The Monkey Beach Bar at 9pm, with Audio Kartel, until 12.30am, when the main event moves on to TIBU, the most exclusive VIP discotheque in Tenerife, where the party continues until 6am. Brandon, an East End lad, began his career back in 1985 at the John Lion pub in Harrow, West London, and retains fond memories of the venue. “My friends and I used to buy a lot of funk and soul (the sound at the time) and one night the Dj there didn’t show,” he recalled. “So me and my then Dj partner, Ali Jobe, asked the
governor if we could bring our records down and do it. We were so good that he fired the Dj. In fact, it got so popular that they started
charging an entrance fee.” Since then, he has gone from strength to strength, taking up his first UK club residency at a nightclub
called ZigZag, at the Broadway Boulevard in Ealing, London, in 1988. While there, he met Dean Thatcher and started up his own nightclub called Haven Stables, which ran until 1991. But Blocko is not just for the youngsters of today; many clubbers remember seeing him at his residencies, including Godskitchen UK/Ibiza, Gatecrasher and Passion, plus appearances at Ministry of Sound, Turnmills, Miss Moneypenny’s,
Republica, Progress, Karanga and Colours. He was one of the first Djs in Dubai, performing from 1999, and he has been back there three times a year since then. He is also holding residencies at Chi, Zinc, Diamonds, Atlantis, and The original Hardrock. Other destinations include Marbella, BCM Mallorca, Hong Kong and yearly excursions to Koh Samui, playing at Black Moon, Full Moon and various clubs.
One constantly hears that he is known as an Ibiza Veteran, an Ibiza Legend. His residency at the Space Terrace on that island is thought to be a major force in establishing Ibiza as one of the best clubbing places in the world. You would have to travel far and wide to find a place where the name Brandon Block is not known. He has carried a “legendary” status tag ever since being one of the first resident Djs on the Space Terrace Ibiza in 1990. His residency was, arguably, one of the initial driving forces behind the club’s worldwide notoriety as one of the best places to party. Brandon is infamous for his party spirit and, in equal measures, his ability to capture that raw energy in his Dj sets. Musically, Brandon has a wealth of experience and is a staunch champion of the Funkier end of House. His continued success means Brandon Block is still one of the UK’s most sought-after Djs, and you can see him here in Tenerife next Thursday. For further information about this amazing Sintillate event, please contact Chantelle on 638 440 863.
Earl strengthens on approach to US THE EAST coast of America is on high alert as Hurricane Earl gathers strength and experts warn it could make landfall within two days. Residents living on islands off North Carolina have already evacuated their homes as President Barack Obama declared a state of emergency. Holidaymakers and residents jammed ferries bound for the mainland after evacuations were ordered on Ocracoke and Hatteras islands. Earl was expected to pass about 50m (80km) to the east of North Carolina early on Friday. However, there were fears any westward deviation from the forecast track could bring the eye of the storm over the
Page 16
coast. National Hurricane Centre (NHC) director Bill Read said: “If the turns occur a little bit later than we’re forecasting it could bring more of a threat at that time to extreme eastern Long Island or southeastern New England. The hurricane has been upgraded to a category four and areas as far north as New York have been told stormforce winds are on the way. Earl is generating gales of 135mph (217kph) across parts of the Atlantic, but experts hoped a change in pressure over the next few days would result in minor damage along the eastern US coast. Despite this, hurricane warnings have been issued
for most of North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island and part of Massachusetts. The NHC said a “dangerous” storm surge was due to raise water levels by three to five feet in the affected areas, bringing with it large and destructive waves. Mr Obama said officials were preparing for the “worst case” scenario and would do all they could to protect vulnerable east coast communities. Earlier this week, Hurricane Earl wrecked havoc across the Bahamas and eastern Caribbean where heavy rain and powerful winds brought down trees, damaged homes and snapped power lines.

Obesity adding weight to men’s horrific disease THE number of men contracting throat cancer has gone up by 50% in the last 25 years because of obesity and bad diet. Back in the Eighties, around 2,600 men were diagnosed with oesophageal cancer every year, but now the figure is more than 5,100. The most dramatic rise was among men in their 50s, as rates increased by 67% over the same period. Women’s also rose, but only by 8% from 5.1 to 5.5 per 100,000 people. Professor Janusz Jankowski, a Cancer Research UK-funded clinician at Barts & The London School of Medicine & Dentistry, said: “We don’t know exactly why we’re seeing this steep rise in oesophageal cancer rates, and why it’s having such a dramatic effect on men. “But we believe the obesity epidemic may be a big reason behind the increase. We know that being overweight significantly increases the risk of adenocarcinoma - the main type of oesophageal cancer that’s on the up. “Our changing diets are also likely to be influencing the rise, with people eating less
FOREIGN Secretary William Hague has defended his deeply personal denial of claims he had an improper relationship with a male aide. It came as Downing Street confirmed the Foreign Secretary had David Cameron’s “100% support”. At a news conference, the Foreign Secretary said: “I made a very personal statement, not an easy thing to do. “I will not expand on it today. “My wife and I felt we had had enough of the circulation of false allegations, particularly on the internet. “At some point, you have to speak out about it. “You have to put the record straight. In his statement, Mr Hague dismissed reports his marriage was in trouble, revealing he and his wife Ffion have suffered the trauma of multiple miscarriages. He also said his special advisor Christopher Myers had quit as a result of the “pressure” put on his family by the
Page 18
fruit and vegetables.” In 1983, 9.6 in every 100,000 men were diagnosed with oesophageal cancer, but 14.4 in every 100,000 men now have the disease. Oesophageal cancer is the ninth most-common cancer in the UK. In 2007, around 8,000 people were diagnosed with the disease, including 5,226 men. The risk of developing it increases with age and affects few people under 40. To make matters worse, it is one of the most difficult cancers to detect and treat, with only 8% of people diagnosed surviving at least five years. Dr Lesley Walker, director of cancer information at Cancer Research UK, said: “These new figures are particularly concerning as oesophageal cancer is very difficult to treat. “Oesophageal cancer rates have risen dramatically in the UK compared with many other Western countries, so we need to determine the underlying causes. “ He added: “To combat the poor survival rate, Cancer Research UK is funding research to find new ways to identify the disease earlier and improve treatment, so that more people beat the disease.” By Val Sainsbury
An outrage over ‘Princess Diana’ lingerie advert A CHINESE lingerie company has unveiled a new range of underwear featuring a Princess of Wales look-alike model on the 13th anniversary of her death. Under the slogan “Feel the romance of British royalty”, the ad features the “Princess” wearing a tiara, necklace and blue bra and knickers as she plays a cello to a child. The controversial poster has been splashed on giant billboards in shops and airports throughout China for millions to see. The firm which has produced the lingerie, Jealousy International, is based in China’s southern Guandong province. On its website, the manufacturer has a section on the “Diana” range with the further slogan “Free your mind, free your style” and confus-
ingly describes Diana’s taste as “French Romantic”. The apparent attempt to exploit the Princess’ image is the latest example of how companies have sought to capitalise on her popularity. Britain has restrictions on using images of the Royal Family to promote products but is powerless to act against companies doing so abroad. Clarence House, which rep-
resents Prince Charles, has declined to comment on the ad. But a British journalist who spotted the ad while at Shenzhen airport in the south of the country was appalled. Sam Chambers, who has worked in China for a decade, was reported as saying: “I was just going to collect my baggage from the carousel when I saw it flash up on a rolling advertising screen and could-
n’t quite believe what I was seeing.” Mr Chambers added: “I thought, surely not, because it was rolling quite quickly. So I waited to check when it came up again and, sure enough, there was an image of Diana. It’s all the more striking because it was on the anniversary of her death.” Princess Diana died on August 31, 1997, in a car crash in a tunnel in Paris.
Hague defends denial of ‘gay affair’ claims “untrue and malicious allegations made about him”. In his statement Mr Hague said: “Any suggestion (Mr Myers’) appointment was due to an improper relationship between us is utterly false, as is any suggestion that I have ever been involved in a relationship with any man.” Mr Myers, 25, was employed by Mr Hague during the general election campaign as a constituency aide and had worked for him as a policy advisor. Mr Hague admitted to “occasionally” sharing hotel rooms with the Durham university graduate during the election, which apparently sparked the reports of an affair. But he added: “Neither of us would have done so if we had
thought that it in any way meant or implied something else.” Mr Hague insisted he and
Ffion, whom he married in 1997, were “very happy” together and had been trying for a family.
He went on to reveal she has suffered a number of miscarriages, the latest this summer - a revelation that has drawn
some criticism. Mr Hague said: “I have made no secret of the fact that Ffion and I would love to start a family. “For many years this has been our goal. Sadly, this has proved more difficult for us than for most couples. “We have encountered many difficulties and suffered multiple miscarriages, and indeed are still grieving for the loss of a pregnancy this summer. “We are aware that the stress of infertility can often strain a marriage, but in our case, thankfully, it has only brought us closer together.” Mr Hague acknowledged his statement would cause “distress” for their families but insisted he had to reveal the “straightforward truth”.

In conjunction with Aktiontier, the dog sanctuary based at Accion del Sol, Granadilla, she is launching a keep-fit club for your dogs On Thursday, 16th September. The aim is to provide owners and their dogs with more physical and mental stimulation. Aktiontier fund-raiser Karen Clack, who is behind the project with Danni (of Tenerife Fitness), says: “We intend to start with a couple of walks.
“We’ll begin at the Arona Grand Hotel, in Los Cristianos, at 6.30pm, and then go on to do various agility games with your dog to get your heart rate up and both of you moving. “It’s a fun way for both parties to get fit, and it will boost your metabolism and burn off more calories. It’s also a great way for your dog and you to socialise more and make new friends.” The cost is just three euros per session, and if you want more details, please contact Karen (687 905 511) or Danni (619 008 035) if you have any fitness queries. Karen adds: “Everybody is welcome to join, and we even have refuge dogs who would love to take part if you don’t have your own dog. They would love to
partner them.” The second doggie keep-fit meeting will be held on the 30th September at 6.30pm near the children’s play area in Fanabe, behind the Adeje Grand Hotel. Incidentally, Aktiontier officials have issued a plea to anyone finding a dog abandoned on the street. Call the correct number for your area featured here and the police will inform Protection Civil, who will collect the animal and take it to the appropriate legal refuge. There, the dog will immediately receive medical care/treatment, de-flead, wormed, castrated/sterilised, micro-chipped, and be given the necessary injections, including rabies, and issued with its passport. Should the dog be micro-
chipped already, then the owner will be contacted and the animal returned to him/her. But owners will be prosecuted if the dog has been abandoned or ill-treated. Karen says: “If you really want to help the situation here in the south of Tenerife, then we all need to work in a legal and correct way. “Every dog collected by Protection Civil is paid for by the Town Hall covering the area in which the dog is found. Call one of the following local police numbers to help a stray dog: San Miguel: 922 700 807, Granadilla: 922 759 911, Arona: 922 725 562, Las Galletas: 922 053 032, Guia de Isora: 922 850 101, Adeje: 922 716 508.

Liquidacion Complementaria AFTER buying a property you normally have to pay Transfer Tax (Im-puesto de Transmisiones Patrimoniales). In some cases this tax is exempt, especially here in Tenerife, because the tax applicable is IGIC (Canary VAT). The Transfer Tax is “self-liquidated” and paid within 30 days from the date of the signature of the Purchase Deed by means of an “autoliquidación” (self-liquidation) application form. The tax is paid at the Oficina Tributaria, which belongs to the Canary Government. The applicable rate is 6.5% of the price. However, I am not referring to this payment today. Instead, I am going to talk about the problem that comes when the Tax Authority reviews the value assessed at the Deed through a valuation and says that the “real” price is higher than the price “assessed” at the Title Deed. This act is call “comprobación de valores” (verification of value). Consequently, according to the Tax Office, the rate should have been applied on the highest price. In other words, the Tax Office reassesses the value of the property and asks for the payment of the difference between 6.5% on the real price and 6.5% on the assessed price. For example, the price assessed at the Public Title Deed is 50,000 euros and you paid 6.5% (self-liquidation) on this price, which is 3,250 euros. The Tax Office sends a verification of valuation saying that the real price is 70,000 euros (instead of 50,000) and liquidates the 6.5% on this price, which is 4,550 euros. Consequently, as you have
paid 3,250 euros, you have now to pay extra 1,300 euros, up to 4,550. The liquidation includes fines and interests which, at the end, mean you are paying, proportionally, a substantial sum. At the beginning, you normally receive a proposal and you have the opportunity to do “allegations”. After allegations, the authority takes a decision which is normally the Further Liquidation, which puts an end to the administrative proceeding. What can we do? Back to the article “What can I do if I receive a tax fine?” and we have similar possibilities: 1) Accept the liquidation and pay 2) Object to the liquidation because you do not agree with the valuation made by the Authority, or that the liquidation was wrongly made. 1) Accept the liquidation: Either because you agree with it, or the new liquidation figures are not so high and you consider the appeal is not worth pursuing. 2) Do not accept the liquidation: Object to the valuation. There is a procedure which lets you ask for a “contradictory valuation” in which you suggest a valuation lower than the one made by the Tax Office. If you consider that the liquidation of the authority has not been properly made, you can also present a “Recurso de Reposición” (revision of decision by the same authority) and “Reclamación Economico Administrativa” (revision of decision by a higher authority). A) Verification of value: in this procedure, you appoint an independent surveyor, who makes a valuation of the property lower than the authority. B) Recurso: The “Recurso de Reposición” is presented before the same body which
03 September 2010 - 09 September 2010
valued the property and issued the new liquidation. The target of this “recurso de reposición” is to object to the liquidation and persuade the authority to change its mind and revoke the liquidation. C) Reclamación: The “Reclamación Económico Administrativa” is presented before “Tribunal Economico Administrativo” which is a higher authority (and depends on the Ministry of Economy). This “reclamación” can be presented after the decision taken in “recurso de reposición”. In any case, you can go direct to “reclamación” without previous “reposición”. You are not allowed to present both appeals (“reposicion” and “reclamacion”) at the same time.
In either of the cases, the liquidation must be guaranteed or paidbefore the “recurso” or “reclamación” have a decision. If you do not pay or guarantee payment, the authority can enforce the payment by means of “embargos” (attachments) on your assets. If you do not succeed with “Reclamación Economico Administrativa”, the next step is to present a “Recurso Contencioso-Administrativo” before the Administrative Court. Once again, it is very important to bear in mind that this article does not replace any legal advice. This is just a summary of complex matters which are impossible to explain in a few lines. If you have any queries,
please, do not hesitate to contact me. Mariano Zunino Siri is a lawyer, registered in Tenerife Bar Association since 1991. His office in Los Cristianos is at Edificio Valdes Center Torre A, oficina 1, piso 2º. Phone: 922 794 412. Letters to Mariano I have received an embargo from Administracion de Hacienda in my bank account. What can I do? Is it possible to appeal? ND You have not specified the reason for the embargo (fine, liquidation). Also, you do not say whether you have received previous notifications of the debt, or if this is the first time you have taken notice of the outstanding sum. Normally,
the embargo is the end of the proceeding, and its origin is the lack of payment of a debt or fine. This means that the Tax Office starts with a notification and you have time to do allegations. After that, officials send the fine or liquidation and you can object to it. If you don’t do that, the proceedings come to the end and there is a final sum to be paid. If you object to the fine or liquidation and the Tax Office does not revoke its decision, you have to appeal (see this article). In the meantime, you have to pay the debt. If you do not pay, there could be an embargo on your assets (including bank accounts).

Alan Davies’ Teenage Revolution, 9:00pm 10:00pm, Channel 4 The actor and comedian hosts a personal history of his formative decade - the 1980s - a highly politicised time when radicalism was rife and race relations, the class struggle, unemployment and sexual politics dominated the agenda. Olly flying straight to No.1 spot Killing in the Name Of. Joe’s cover version of Miley Cyrus’s The Climb finally peaked the following week. If Olly’s single enters at No1, it will be the 10th new chart-topper in 10 weeks - a feat not yet witnessed on the UK Top 40. Rival talent show Must Be The Music release their first act this week. The duo Pepper & Piano have released debut song You Took My Heart , and are expected to gain at least a top-five position this week, much to the pleasure of the anti-X Factor brigade.
OLLY MURS, the 2009 X Factor runner-up, looks set to enter the UK top-40 singles chart at No1 this weekend. His debut single, Please Don’t Let Me Go, is flying out of the shops and looks set to do what his rival, Joe McElderry, couldn’t and debut at the top spot. McElderry was famously held off pole position last Christmas by the Facebookled campaign for Rage Against The Machine’s
The Script’s Irish eyes are smiling again IRISH trio The Script release their second album, Science & Faith, next Friday (10th September. The follow-up to debut album The Script is expected to emulate the success they achieved in 2008 in the UK. The States, always a hard nut to crack for British bands, are usually more receptive to Irish acts. The band’s debut made little impact across the pond, while the single, Break Even, was hugely successful. Danny, Mark and Glen have been on a promotional tour of the UK, receiving much attention from daytime TV shows. The Dublin boys had
moderate success in 1996 as boyband MyTown, although they are keen to dismiss that era. They have certainly grown up since those days, and after several years in America and Canada, they are firmly back where they belong with a bigger sound, and equally catchy and soulful melodies that we saw from the debut. We Cry, The Man Who Can’t Be Moved and Breakeven were all commercial top sellers, and were 5x Platinum in their native Ireland. The first single off the new record, For The First Time, is receiving promotional airplay on most radio stations as the push for the release dates closes in.
Katy is in Dreamland again KATY PERRY is making a downloads impact with the second single off her second album, Teenage Dream.

The single, of the same name, has received a lot of attention because her debut song, I Kissed a Girl, was a massive global hit. Her debut album, One of The Boys, couldn’t crack the top ten. Yet her new album should make No1 on Sunday, as her appeal has received a boost this season from her impending marriage to Brit funny man Russell Brand. California Gurls made No1 in July as the taster for her new material, and stayed at the top in her native US for six weeks, eventually notching up three million digital sales. Not bad for the pastor’s daughter who claims she “just got lucky”.

Flowers continuing to bloom on his own BRANDON FLOWERS, front man with the Killers, embarks on his solo project next week with the UK release of his debut album, Flamingo.. The first single, Crossfire, made No8 in the British charts, and paves the way for the album. Although The Killers are on a hiatus, their
vocalist is keeping himself busy. Flowers collaborated with Daniel Lanois on most of the tracks. The music guru is often called U2’s silent partner, as he has been instrumental in most of their albums since 1984’s Unforgettable Fire. Flamingo is released on Monday (6th Sept), and the partnership should yield an album which is clearly set for stardom.

JOE ‘IN MY OPINION’ FERGUSON Weekly Update Email: joe.ferguson@canarianweekly.com
I just don’t care… AFTER seven years on the TV show Top Gear, this week we found out the answer to the greatest mystery ever. Ben Collins is The Stig! I don’t know about you but I took an interest for a matter of seconds and forgot about it. I certainly didn’t lose any sleep whatsoever! Now that the identity is public, let’s take a look at the biggest non-story of the week. Just like Batman and Superman, The Stig is simply a character made up for two minutes of television. Yes, we enjoyed the million references per show to the helmet by Jeremy Clarkson, and the now milked-to-death Celebrity Lap in a cheap car. As much as I enjoy the BBC show, this continued selfindulgence of a fictional character was getting very, very boring. Then at the start of the year, we hear The Stig is going to be unmasked in special edition of Top Gear. The BBC promoted the show to death over a week, and even in Clarkson’s own newspaper column he told us all to tune in to see this great event. Like most people, I bought into it - not because I’d wondered for years who it was, but just as a weekly viewer of the show. That night, to cheers and fireworks, we are told that it’s actually been Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher all along. The papers went ballistic and it was the subject on everyone’s lips for about an hour! We all got back to our lives and forgot the whole thing. But then a strange thing happened. Not only did we forget about the unmasking of The Stig but in the last two weeks, everyone, from the BBC to the press, has been getting on as if the whole Top Gear episode did not happen. Have we all been hypnotised to erase the memory? For the past fortnight, the press have been going nuts about the whole story. Ben Collins (Stig) wanted to release his autobiography, but
Page 36
the BBC wanted an injunction as they did not want the identity to be out in the public. They said that if he were to be unmasked, it would ruin the show for millions of viewers. Millions of viewers? Ruin it? A little above their station there, I feel. We all watch the show because of the banter between the three presenters. It seems to be no longer about the cars but the laughs and exploits that the trio get up to. The 2008 Christmas special in Vietnam will, no doubt, go down as a television classic! I for one, and I’m sure millions of others, couldn’t care less about the identity of a guy under a white helmet, who drives a car around a racetrack. The court hearing was closed to the press and public, which was the right thing
considering the case. Then, this Wednesday, after the BBC were refused an injunction, we see Mr Ben Collins walking out of the court, his identity revealed, and happy that he is to earn a fortune. And we have yet to get an apology for telling all of us that it was Michael Schumacher earlier in the year! Am I the only one who seems not to have forgotten this? I obviously am. The only thing I can compare this with was when Charlie’s Angels started on the TV and the big thing was who provided the voice of Charlie. Turned out to be Blake, from Dynasty. Who killed JR? Well actually, is it was all the lead characters. They filmed everyone shooting him and picked one at random before they started to even write the next series.
But it’s all fiction and, at the end of the day, do we really care? Not really, is the answer. It will fill front pages over the next few days and an exclusive will be given for the right amount of money. The winners out of it are Mr Collins with his book and chatshow appearances, along with the BBC, who will have a new Stig for the forthcoming series. We can all get on with our lives again. The other big story is that of ex-Prime Minister Tony Blair and his sob story called “Journey”. Why should this book be bought, because we were all there with him during his “Journey”. Let me point out that I am not political. Back in Belfast, we vote only for local politicians and have no say in who forms the UK Government. We have a bunch of comedians who take a huge wage
packet every month and open their mouths only to say: “We are not talking to other parties.” I have never voted back home and never will until this bunch of religious bigots are banned from the whole planet. So I am not Labour, nor Conservative. Unlike Sky News this week, who had all their reporters on screen with a copy of said book in their hands. You make your own mind up as what their politics are. But for Tony Blair two months ago to not say one simple word to the families who have lost loved ones in Iraq during the enquiry is a scandal. That word “sorry” would have meant the world at the time. But it seems that they all have to buy the book to actually see it. Er, no! He hasn’t even apologised to those poor families.
Blair merely “regrets” the loss of life and, just like exPresident George W Bush, he can walk around with a smug look on his face as he pockets millions. Certainly, enough money to get much-needed equipment for our heroes in battle. It’s up to all of us to raise money during charity functions to get money together. But on Sunday, during all the political TV shows Blair’s face will look solemn as he promotes his “story” of what actually happened over the last few years. And obviously, talking about the blood money he is giving back to the British Legion. So there you have it. Two books to make the headlines this week. Which is fact and which is fiction? In my opinion, there will be no facts whatsoever in either story. Joe

Intensity of colour HOW you use a colour, and to what effect, is a matter of personal taste. Much will depend whether you are looking to create an area that is peaceful and calm, or whether you want your soft furnishings to make a statement. In the first photo, the colour scheme is in brown and blue, but in very muted tones. Because the colours are pale, the effect is very muted, and it could be said, restful. Others will find the combination a bit insipid. There is a combination of patterns in this scheme, although all in the same tones so that they are easy on the
eye. In the second photo, I have actually used the same colours, browns and blues, but the effect has been completely changed by the use of more intense versions of the colours. It is, of course, safer to use the same pattern throughout the room because you really can’t go wrong this way. In the third photo of yellows and oranges, the combination sits together well. However, when you look closely, there are six different patterns involved. Why don’t they clash and look awful? Because they are complementary in colour and tone. Years ago, I can remember when the bedspreads usually matched the curtains. Today, we would consider this a bit twee. Nowadays, you can achieve a much more modern and con-
temporary look by mixing and matching patterns and plains, and different patterns in the same tone. If you are not sure about your choices, consult the interior designer where you buy your fabrics, and he or she should be able to guide you in the right direction. So don’t play safe, mix it up a bit, and see how you can liven up your home.

DAVID HUDGELL Getting to the root of your gardening problems! Email: David.hudgell@canarianweekly.com
Going to seed, and How to clone a house plant keeping cost down THE way to create a second house plant of the same species and structure without having to grow from seed is known as cloning.
SAVING vegetable seeds from year to year can save money and preserve plants that are not easily available from other sources. Seeds from any vegetable can be saved, but annuals such as peas, beans, tomatoes, peppers, squash, melons and broccoli are the easiest. Self-pollinated plants will produce offspring much like the original plant. Plants that need pollen from a different plant (cross-pollinated) will produce one like the original, but only if no other varieties were grown nearby. Seeds from hybrid plants may produce a whole variety of characteristics different from the original plant, which can make things really interesting Things you’ll need · Mature vegetable plants · Paper bags · Water · Cloth, clean boards or trays · Jars with lids, envelopes or plastic bags Labels or permanent marker Cool, dry place or refrigerator 1. Harvest seeds when they are mature, but before they fall from the plant. For vegetables that produce a flower, such as lettuce, shake the flower head over a paper bag to collect the
seeds. For vegetables, like melons and peppers, remove seeds by hand from the ripe fruit. The pulpy seeds of cucumbers and tomatoes should be allowed to ferment in water for two to four days. Dead seeds will float. When seeds settle out, pour off the pulp and collect the seeds. 2. Wash the seeds from melons, cucumbers and tomatoes; seeds from flowering heads and plants with dry interiors like peppers do not need to be washed. Spread all seeds out thinly on cloth, clean boards or
trays to dry in the shade or indoors. Seeds dry best when the air is dry and in motion. 3. Store completely dry seeds separated by type in envelopes, glass jars with lids, or sealed plastic bags in a cool, dry place, or in the refrigerator. Label the containers with the type of seed and the date the seeds were harvested. 4. Collect seeds from mature plants throughout their growing seasons. Do not wait until the end of the season or the plants may have a late-blooming charac-
teristic. Save the seeds of those plants which have the best characteristics to increase the percentage of successes each year. Most seeds will stay viable for three to four years, with the exception of onion and parsnips (one year) and corn (two years). In some cases, celery, cabbage and cucumber seeds sprout well even when they are 10 years old. Seeds not fully mature when gathered, stored before completely dry, or stored at too high a temperature, may sprout very poorly or not at all.
This is actually an advantage because it takes away the mystery of what appears when growing plants from seeds. When a plant is started from seed, it can inherit the worst or best qualities of its species, which can be determined only a few months into life. However, cloning a plant ensures that the new one will have all of the characteristics of the parent plant. Because of this, it is important to make sure that the parent houseplant you use is in perfect health because the clone will inherit all of its parent traits. Things you’ll need · Water · Potting soil · Small planter · Pencil · Razor blade · Liquid rooting hormone Method 1. Soak the parent plant’s soil in water for 24 hours before the cloning process. The houseplant to be cloned is called the parent plant because it provides the stems to produce the cloned offspring. 2. Fill the planter with potting soil, stopping about one
inch from the top of the container. 3.Mix the liquid root hormone with the water at the ratio prescribed by the manufacturer. This varies by brand, though it typically is about one tablespoon per gallon of water. 4. Soak the soil in the planter with the fertilised water. The soil should be very wet, though not soaked enough to have water pooling on top. 5. Poke a small hole in the middle of the soil, using the pencil. 6. Sever a thick, healthy stem near the bottom of the parent plant’s stalk at a 45degree angle with the razor blade, as close to the base of the stem as possible. Be careful not to crush the stem in between your fingers while doing so. 7. Place the freshly-cut side of the stem in the hole in the middle of the soil in the small planter. Gently push soil around its base to hold it upright. 8. Place the plant in a sunny window in a room that maintains a temperature between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit and allow it to grow. 9. Repeat this process, using stems from the parent plant as many times as you wish. The cuts will begin to root in three to five days and begin to show growth within one month. 10. Sit back and enjoy the fruit of your labours!
Titchmarsh has big dig at revamped gardening show ALAN TITCHMARSH, one of the bestknown TV gardeners, has told television chiefs to forget celebrity appearances on shows aimed at attracting younger viewers. Titchmarsh, now a TV
chat-show host and author, on top of his gardening exploits, warned that older followers of long-running shows like BBC2’s Gardeners’ World must not be compromised. His fears were revealed following a Gardeners’ World makeover which introduced Top Gear-style features. The show’s former pre-

senter said: “I am rattled when a Radio 1 DJ is hauled in to show his veg patch,” he said. “Those who tune in want advice from someone who knows what he’s talking about. Never undervalue a mature audience.” Another former Gardeners’ World co-presenter claims the revamped show was “toe-curling” and irrelevant
for real gardeners. Stefan Buczacki, who worked on the show in the Eighjties and Nineties, said it had become an entertainment show which no longer had “credibility”. Buczacki added: “The real rot set in after Alan Titchmarsh left, because the programme then ceased to be made in the presenter’s own garden.”

It’s all about you! Fighting the arm flab! CONTINUING with our question-and-answer session on health and fitness, this week, I’m covering an underarm exercise for beginners, smoking and your metabolism, plus aqua-aerobics.
STYLING your hair at home has never been easier. Keeping up to that salon look guarantees you will always look immaculate. I’ve looked at some ways that you maybe could improve the way you look after your hair. These are answers to the many questions I get asked in the salon every week. Lacking shine? Use a shine-enhancing shampoo to give you the glossy effect you’re after. Always use a serum before you blow-dry, and never use hot water to shampoo your hair as this dulls it. Cool or cold is best. Never blow-dry hair in an upward direction, so always point the nozzle downwards. This smoothes the cuticle and gives you extra shine. Finally, spray a hairbrush with lacquer and then brush hair to smooth any frizzes and flyaways. Can’t hold curls? If curling, remember not to condition the hair because it holds better if it is not too soft. Make sure the form of curling you are using is super-hot. Some cold rollers aren’t going to do much. So whether you use heated rollers or straighteners, make sure they are too hot to touch, and always apply a heat-defence spray. Let the rollers or tongued sections dry completely before spraying with lacquer, and then rake through slowly with your fingers - never a brush or comb.
Page 40
Finally, at the ends only, apply a curl serum or crème to smooth and give added definition. Fix with a strong hold spray and don’t go back into the steamy bathroom. Want bold colour but scared to go full head? Then try colour slices. These are bold colours placed into your hair at specific points to complement the style. Normally placed underneath the look so as not to show too much root re-growth, these colours last forever and, as they grow out, they still look great! These colours, which normally work best on darker hair but can be used on blondes, create a striking look on anyone and bring out the shape of any haircut when placed correctly. Don’t overdo them, though - less is more! Hair looks flat in-between washes? Then re-apply your products and quickly go over with
a hairdryer to add the oomph you had yesterday. If your hair goes greasy at the roots, add a dry shampoo to revitalise your hair. Don’t forget the heat-defence sprays to prevent damage. I want to colour my natural hair, but I’m scared to do so First of all, consult a professional, who will advise you as to what shade will suit you best. He or she will know the difference between cooler and warmer shades to enhance your skin tone. Depending on your hairstyle, he/she will advise you on the colour that will work for you. An all-over chocolate-brown won’t work too well with a short, funky cut, because the two need to complement each other. Let the expert show you the options available. Colouring hair to us professionals is our art, and it’s not something you should try at home.
Q: My arms are a flabby mess. Do you have a simple exercise to tone them up? A: Absolutely! I’ve got just the thing. With toned triceps, you can wave them about all you want without being embarrassed - no more upper-arm jiggle. Get started with tricep kickbacks, a terrific beginner exercise for sculpting the backs of your upper arms. But to do this properly, remember to keep your abs tight and your back flat. Tricep Kickbacks Hold a dumbbell ( or two small bottles of water filled with sand) in each hand and stand with your feet hipwidth apart with a slight bend to your knees. Bend over at the waist so that your torso is slightly above parallel with the floor. Bend both elbows so that your upper arms are locked at your sides, parallel to the floor. Keeping your arms still, straighten them behind you until the end of the dumbbell is pointing down toward the floor with your palms facing in towards your body. Hold for a beat and inhale, slowly lowering your arms back to the starting position, and repeat.
Q: I realise smoking is considered unhealthy under any circumstances, but how does it affect metabolism? Any tips for quitting without going on a major eating binge? A: Smoking doesn’t affect metabolism, but it does serve as a form of oral fixation. For that reason, people tend to eat more when they quit smoking and, therefore, gain weight. However, I recommend making exercise your new addiction. Exercise releases endorphins and serotonin, which make you feel good and will help combat the tendency to overeat. For those attempting to quit smoking, PLEASE, PLEASE do. I have lost loved ones to this habit, yet death from smoking is totally preventable - and besides, it is a horrible way to die. I have turned many people on to a book by Alan Carr, The Easy Way to Stop Smoking, and everyone swears by it. Check it out, and please do whatever you can to quit. Ask yourself this question: Do I want 20 extra years to see my grandchildren grow up, or do I want a cigarette? Q: My mother took up water aerobics because she was told
it would be easier on her joints, but she never feels like she’s getting a good workout and is getting frustrated. Why? A: This is common complaint among people who work out in pools, but your mother is getting more of a workout than she thinks she is. That’s because the water keeps the body cool and prevents sweating, which makes people who are used to working up a sweat exercising on dry land think their pool workouts are less challenging. An important point to remember is that when it comes to improving and maintaining your general health, any physical activity is better than none. Even if a workout doesn’t feel strenuous, or you aren’t losing weight, you are enjoying the health benefits of exercise. Now, if your mum wants to exercise more and is capable of workouts beyond the pool, she should consider adding a walking programme to her routine, even if it has to be done at a slow pace. Regular walking has been shown to improve mood and reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, strokes, and some types of cancers. A good walking goal is 150 minutes per week at moderate pace. But again, this is not an allor-nothing deal. If she can’t do 150 minutes, she’ll get a health boost from walking as little as 75 minutes. Tip from Danni: A healthy life is about balance. We’re so used to too much or not enough all the time that we often forget what it feels like to be on an even keel with ourselves. If you’re used to feeling as though you’re going 200mph, 24/7, remember to pull over every now and then and simply enjoy life.

Just keeping one step ahead in the brain department WALKING for 40 minutes at your own pace, three times a week, can improve intelligence At least, that’s the latest theory put forward by scientists. They say their research shows that moderate walking enhances connections between the brain’s circuits, combats a drop in brain function linked to ageing, and even improves performance in reasoning tasks. Psychologists at Illinois University found brainfunction levels among nearly 100 self-confessed couch potatoes improved dramatically, after a year in which they walked several times a week. All the volunteers, aged
18-35 and 59-80, led a sedentary lifestyle before the study, with fewer than two bouts of physical activity of 30 minutes or more, during the previous six months. Professor Art Kramer, who led the study (published in the science journal Frontiers in Ageing Neuroscience), said: “Almost nothing in the brain gets done by one area. It’s more of a circuit. “These networks can become more or less connected. As we get older, they become less connected, so we were interested in the effects of fitness on connectivity of brain networks that showed the most dysfunction with age.” The team found that fitter, older adults tended to have better connectivity in specific regions of the brain
03 September 2010 - 09 September 2010
than their sedentary peers. Those with more brain network connections also tended to be better at planning, prioritising, strategising and multi-tasking. The study used brain scans to determine whether aerobic activity increased connectivity in the brain’s networks. Researchers measured participants’ brain connectivity and performance on cognitive tasks at the beginning of the study, again at six months, and then after a year of either walking or toning and stretching. At the end of the year, brain network connectivity was significantly improved in the brains of the older walkers, but not among those who did stretching and toning exercises only. The walkers also had increased connectivity in the part of the brain which helped in the performance of complex tasks, and they did significantly better on cognitive tests than their toning and stretching peers. Professor Kramer said previous studies had determined that aerobic exercise could enhance the function of specific brain structures. But this latest study shows that even moderate aerobic exercise also improves the co-ordination of important brain networks. He said: “The higher the connectivity, the better the performance on some of these cognitive tasks, especially the ones we call ‘executive control tasks’.
“These include things like planning, scheduling, dealing with ambiguity, working memory and multi-tasking.” Prof Kramer added: “These are the very skills that tend to decline with ageing.”

Brits still prefer mum’s cooking BRITONS secretly prefer mum’s home cooking to their partners’ – and would go home for mum’s grub over a swanky meal at a five star restaurant. British blokes in particular would even give up watching the footie and going out with their mates for some of their mum’s nosh, according to new study released. The study was commissioned by Richmond Sausages, who are searching for the
nation’s favourite sausage based recipe - giving the winning Brit a huge £10,000. The results reveal our partners should be taking more tips from ‘mother’, with almost a third (31%) of us admitting that we wished our partner would cook more like our dearest mums. Nearly a quarter (24%) of us wouldn’t dare share this with our partner though, through fear of an argument erupting. Almost a third (29%) of men in Britain put their mum’s home cooking above their mates and even above supporting their beloved footie
team. The research results demonstrate that British mums undoubtedly know what they’re doing in the kitchen, as almost half of the nation (40%) rate their mum’s home cooking above anyone else’s - including that of a five star restaurants. If we can’t get back for mum’s cooking, then for almost a third of us (30%), even just the smell of someone else making our favourite childhood meal can evoke sentimental memories of home. According to the survey, the nations favourite ‘tastes’ that would take them home included bangers and mash and sausages, chips and

beans! The top 5 ‘tastes that bring them home’: 1. Roast Dinner 62% 2. Shepherd’s Pie 44%
3. Bangers and Mash 41% 4. Sausages, chips and beans 40% 5. Fry up 35% Richmond has launched ‘The
Taste That Brings Them Home’ competition to celebrate the nation’s love for mum’s home cooked meals. Derek Williamson, Marketing Director of Kerry Foods said: “An overwhelming 40 per cent of the population prefer their mum’s home cooking to anyone else’s, so we want to find and celebrate the nations ultimate ‘taste that brings them home’ recipe.” Richmond has called for the help of James Martin’s and Lesley Waters’ mums, Sue and Frances to help find the nation’s favourite Richmond Sausage based recipe. Sue Martin remembers the tastes that used to bring James home: “It’s great to see that mum’s home cooked meals are still loved by the nation and it’s really nice to know that our efforts in the kitchen are appreciated! Sausages, chips and beans and toad in the hole were definitely popular in our household and James still loves to come home to enjoy some of my cooking. I can’t wait to find out what the nation’s favourite sausage based recipe is and with a £10,000 prize for the winner – what an incentive to enter!” To enter the competition, Brits are being urged to post favourite recipe ideas online at: richmondsausages.co.uk

Sudoku - X
The rules of sudoku X are simple - just enter the numbers 1 - 9 once in each row, column and 3 x 3 square within the sudoku X puzzle grid. In addition to standard sudoku, the numbers must only occur once in each side of the 'X' that is marked on the grid. Use logic alone to deduce where each of these numbers must be placed in every cell of a puzzle. Don’t worry! We´ve kept in two original sudokus for you on the right.

Virgo Aug-24-Sept-23 The Sun brings home matters to the fore and will see you choosing your loved ones over the friends who will also be banging on your door. Don’t make fun of a younger person’s problem in the next few days or they will not confide in you again. Treat them as an equal and you’ll get to hear the real story. Libra Sept 24-Oct 23 If close ones are not giving you the support you have asked for in your career, don’t take it as a mark of disrespect. They are simply scared for you and are waiting to see which way things may go. Your own confidence should give you all the proof you need that you are, indeed, on the right track. You will soon find out what a great boss you’ve got as well. Scorpio Oct 24-Nov 2 You know for a sign which is usually so determined and strong that you are feeling extremely vulnerable. It would be in your best interests to avoid anyone you know who is capable of getting the better of you, especially verbally. An old friend returns and provides the relaxation at the weekend. Sagittarius Nov 23Dec 21 Revelations are going to be coming to you soon which will enable you to get the better of what has been an extremely difficult work situation. A new side to will be shown to a loved one, which should lead them to open up to you more emotionally. Capricorn Dec 22Jan 20 There is plenty of gossip about to start circulat-
ing. However, be careful of getting drawn into a lie someone is spreading. You will be the one blamed, should the centre of this speculation ever hear the words that are being said of him or her. Wear yellow for confidence in family issues, and you’ll have reason to smile. Aquarius Jan 21-Feb 19 It is going to be very difficult for you to know which offers are genuine and which are not. Make sure you get any promises in writing. You have worked too long and hard to play silly games, and you must also make sure to ask for the weight you are worth in gold! Pisces Feb 20-Mar 2 A close one wants you to do something you do not feel is right but, as emotions blur your vision, you will find it difficult to know what to do. Only you can decide how far is too far. Just make sure you let them know if you are proceeding against your will, or they may take your silence as approval. Aries Mar 21-April 20 You appear to have become bored with your usual routine and will be going to great lengths in order to make a change. There is much you can do to ease your mind about a financial hiccup if you converse with a Scorpio. Don’t tell tales on family mat-

ters over the weekend, or they will come back on you. Taurus April 21-May 21 Everybody appears to be looking to you for answers on life, and your close ones are seeking commitments from you about an important, upcoming event. They are not being mean or nasty. It’s just that you are feeling very independent, so try not to bite if you begin to feel pressured. Gemini May 22-June 21 Leos tell lies in business, so beware. You must stop blaming yourself for things that have already happened. Instead, why not try learning from the events that have passed and improving the current situation that is waiting around for your love and attention. Be careful of Pisceans blowing hot air with their promises. Cancer June 22-July 23 Both work and personal matters clash, as both find problems with your commitment to the other. Someone you thought you would not like will prove just how very wrong you can be to judge people on first impressions. Dress extra smartly at work because there is someone powerful whose attention you can attract if you do. Leo July 24-August 23 New options to family worries appear. The need for some more money is going to see you trying some very strange ways of gathering funds. Don’t worry because help is on hand in the form of some last-minute assistance from a loved one, who has been watching from the wings. .

No substitute for class! THE success of the uniquely-designed first Mercedes CLS has seen a number of copycats from rival manufacturers. These include Porsche’s Panamera and the upcoming Audi A7 Sportback, plus fastback versions of regular saloons such as the Volkswagen Passat CC. They have all adopted the curving, sweeping shape of the old CLS. But this new Merc is in a different class. Its striking design has evolved to include styling cues from the manufacturers’ latest concepts, such as the Shooting Break estate, with a more sculpted, athletic look to replace the cleaner shape of the original car. The pronounced panel creases, plus flared arches and sills, combined with the angular new front end, make the CLS seem lower and wider than the previous model, and they hint at the shape of the SLS AMG supercar. Triple-layered LED headlights house 71 separate diodes. They provide everything, from the indicators to full-beam illumination, which
Mercedes claim is a production-car first. An additional row of daytime. running lamps completes the dazzling effect. The tail is heavily inspired by the Shooting Break concept that wowed crowds at this year’s Beijing Motor Show. Its large, leaf-shaped rear lights and polished metal strip give an extra touch of class to the high-shouldered back end. There will be a wide engine line-up to choose from when this model hits the showrooms in January next year,
including a 261bhp 3.5-litre V6 diesel, and V6 and V8 petrols with 302bhp and 435bhp respectively. But the big news is the introduction next March of a four-cylinder oil-burner, which is a first for the CLS. And producing 204bhp will help lower the overall carbon emissions of the entire range. Although pictures of the cabin haven’t yet been released, it will remain a strict four-seater by keeping the spacious 2+2 layout from before, with a wide, centre-storage console sep-
arating the leather back seats. The dash will feature the usual wood and hide, but details such as the air vents and steering wheel will be picked out with gloss metal inserts. All these changes are
designed to move the CLS further away from its lessprestigious impersonators, and re-establish the Mercedes reputation for unrivalled build quality and luxurious performance cars. Prices for the CLS have yet
to be announced, but you can expect more details to arrive closer to next month’s prestigious Paris Motor Show. However, the initial range should start at around £48,000 (58,300 euros) for the V6 diesel model.
Illegal young drivers are to blame for higher insurance YOUNGER drivers in the UK have been blamed for costing responsible motorists an extra £50 a year on insurances policies. The total bill, through fraudulent and uninsured drivers, amounts to £1.25 billion annually, and more than 23,000 people are injured or killed each year by those who take to the road illegally. Research by the Co-operative Insurance found that the extra charge was equivalent to the cost of 52 days of insurance cover for most British motorists. Almost 25% of under-21s admitted to having driven without a valid licence, or using a car which hadn’t been okayed by an MOT station.
“Millions of people are deliberately flouting the law by not insuring their cars, at massive cost to honest roadusers and the wider insurance industry, said Tim Franklin, head of the Co-Operative Financial Services. They pose an unnecessary and unjustified risk. “While work is continuing to be done to highlight the dangers of uninsured drivers and keep them off the public highways by police, roadsafety groups and the insurance industry, there is clearly more to be done.” Kathie Shephard, spokesman for national road safety charity Brake, said: “Young people are involved in a huge proportion of deaths and serious injuries on our roads. “That’s because of their inexperience, and the tenden-

Tenerife’s torrid start Girona 4 CD Tenerife 2 Elche 4 CD Tenerife 1
I'VE just had to read the results at the top of this page three times. It still doesn’t seem real. Wednesday’s defeat against Elche in the Spanish Cup is not worth a row of beans. Both teams played the reserves and the Cup is pointless this season for Tenerife. For the record, Nino got our goal and Luna got sent off. Again. But the defeat, and another four goals shipped, four days previously … well that's another story. I can be as one-eyed as any football fan. There you go chaps, I've admitted it. It hurts to tell the truth at times. But when it comes to writing or broadcasting, I’ve always played to a Geoffrey style. That's a straight bat to you non-cricket types. The dirty, stinking bookies had chalked up Tenerife as 6-4 pokes to beat Girona, and I thought it was the bet of the year. Sure the hosts are okay at home, but Tenerife are different gravy. I explained to a mate of mine that this was like Newcastle playing at Scunthorpe. The problem is, Newcastle have never won a league match at Scunthorpe! D’oh! Sure enough the new-look Tenerife team played like the old Tenerife. They dominated possession, passed the ball like Brazil, but finished like Alan Brazil. On a bad day. The first home goal was a dodgy penalty which Jandro, on his debut, stroked past the hapless Luis Garcia after just nine minutes. Tenerife dusted themselves down and missed chance after chance before Nino finally found the net. Well, sort of. His 25-yard shot took a deflection off Natalio and wrong-footed Dani Mallo. Nino claimed it, as did Natalio. It was streaky, but deserved. Just when it
Page 46
Girona enjoy their goal
seemed that Tenerife would sneak a half-time lead, the hosts nicked another. Poor marking has long been a Tenerife trademark, and new boss Arconada has not ironed out this flaw. This time, Jandro had the freedom of Spain as he sidefooted home from inside the box after a poor Angel cross. It was kids’ defending. Half-time saw a change of formation and emphasis. Omar was replaced by Julio Alvarez and Tenerife looked a different team. They tore forward and needed just two minutes to equalise from a wicked Serra deflection. This was the starting pistol for one-way traffic as Tenerife destroyed Girona. Chance after chance went begging, and keeper Mallo was having the game of his life. No matter what Tenerife did, the ball would just not go in. And seasoned fans knew what was coming. A regulation corner saw trademark Tenerife defending, and Kiko powered home a free header. Straight from the kick-off, the ball was played back to Melli, who misread the pace on the ball. His weak back-pass was pounced on by Peragon, who knocked it past Garcia. There are lies, damn lies and statis-
settling of some old scores. The first visitors to the Heliodoro this season are familiar foes, and a juicy, goalladen battle is guaranteed. Salamanca don’t do boring, goalless draws. They have the old Kevin Keegan ideas about the beautiful game. If they had concentrated on defence last season, they may well have finished in the top half. New coach Oscar Cano is perfect for the club because he has refused to address the problems at the back. His main signings have all been attacking players! Former Las Palmas striker
Marcos Marquez was his major addition, and we know all about him. He was bizarrely released by the Gran Canarians in the summer, and there was talk that he would end up in Santa Cruz. But he pitches up along with fellow “Custard Coward” Miguel Garcia this weekend. Marquez has bags of experience and joins Salamanca legend Quique Martin in attack. Martin is like a Spanish Teddy Sheringham. He is nearly 38 but is no fool. He notched twice at the Heliodoro two seasons back in a 3-2 win, and produced one of the displays of the season. His legs are still there and he ruled out retirement to give promotion one more shot. Brian Sarimiento is the third striker, and he joined from La Liga’s Racing, along with centre-back Moraton. Throw in wily old centralmidfielder Mario Rosas, back for a second spell, and exIpswich defender Sito, and it’s not hard to see why they fall into the “dark horses” category this season. As I’ve mentioned, they love to fly forward ,and this should be their Achilles heel on Sunday. Tenerife are made for the counter-attack and, as in a decent boxing contest, the styles should blend. It’s far from an ideal match for a side who have shipped eight goals in two games, but the fans should enjoy this one. We will know much more about the way the season will unfold for Tenerife come 9pm on Sunday.
Marcos Marquez
tics. Girona had six shots on goal and Tenerife 24. The defeat was hard to take, and not just because the night’s beer money was in some bookmaker’s satchel. All the pre-season promise had evaporated on one scorching afternoon. Arconada’s honeymoon was over after one game, and all the old faults were still there for all to see. • Poor set-piece marking • No defensive communication • No back-up for Nino. Stop
him, stop Tenerife • More awayday blues. BA Baracus is a better traveller • Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory However, there are always positives and that is what makes football fans such strange beasts. There are still 41 games to go, and the first home game of the season must always bring a ray of sunshine. So it’s with misty-eyed optimism that we look forward to the visit of Salamanca this Sunday (kick-off 7pm) and the

THERE is a gap developing at the top of Division One of the Oasis Fm Pool League, with three sides still undefeated after another round of matches. Summerlands Superstars lead the way by the smallest possible margin after a 7-3 derby win over Allstars, despite losing both of the

A GROUP of Barracudas are called a battery. And Division 2’s Amigos Bad Girls were well and truly battered and deep fried by the Barracudarts boys as the Oasis Darts League got back to business last Friday. They tipped their scales, reeled in a 7lb beauty and resurfaced at the top of the league, leaving their visitors homeward bound with the one that got away! La Cana Lancers had that sinking feeling while they entertained Nautas Nutters. Indeed, the away team lost only three legs as they hooked themselves a 7-1 victory with two plus-80 checkouts. Tenerife Sun slightly rocked the boat at Gaffers, but Ben and his team stayed afloat in third spot after a 5-3 win. The Hunters came downstream to Marilyns and had

Ruby scoring 104 during a solid 6-2 success. At the good ship Ourplace, an internal derby finished all-square between the Playgirls and the Naturals. And all things were on an even keel at the end of the night as those Naughty Nautas had some good fun at Phoenix Flames. Bar 180 B got back to winning ways at Woodys B and sailed home 6-2, which keeps them fourth. Yelas Bar, following closely in their wake, laid to rest the ghost of last week’s thrashing by beating Knights B 5-3. And Rood B set sail to the Tavern, where they climbed aboard for a much-needed 5-3 success. In Division 1, Tenerife Sons made it five wins on the belt as they left Ensecan shipwrecked 7-1. Just two points separate them from leaders Exiles, who paddled up to Toscales for what turned out

to be a close match. The home side’s Duncan harpooned a 143 checkout, equalling the previous best this term. But at 3-4, a missed double allowed that old sea dog Del Boy to fire in the finish to take the honours 3-5. A much-anticipated battle at Nauta A saw Phoenix player Steve Jones hitting a 180 and, at 4-2 up, his side thought they had pirated a win. But Mike and Co, no landlubbers, came back well to share the bounty. Harry was in good shape for Heroes as he skippered his team to a deserved draw at X-Men. Bar 180 remain fourth after scuttling

Woodys A, Carlos taking out a 109 finish for the away team. Target A look safe in sixth place after they torpedoed Strikers Bar, only the chuckling chimp managing to keep his head above water. Admiral Luc, of Cafe Rood, and able seaman Craig, of Target B, were both on form, hitting maximum scores during their match, but it was yayas all round after the home side ran out 5-3 winners. The Surfers rode the crest of the wave with only four players and, despite trailing at one stage, they eventually landed a 5-3 success over the Flukers.
Leaders start to pull away double rubbers. Palms A drop to second after being made to work hard by Men Of Atlantis. The Adeje mob were 4-3 up until Bungalow, Roscoe and Leeds Graham salvaged the spoils. Champions Tenerife Hammers A were good value for their 8-2 win at Legends, who have now lost

all five of their matches. Bar 180 B notched win No4 against Plate holders Terrace Bar A, while Rat Pack lost their first match at Trap Door. Target Bar did for Atlantis Sharks, and Nauta A stunned 8 Ball Massive 6-4, while Hoops got back on track at home to La Cana.
Dreamers Bar upset the form book as they recorded their first-ever top-flight win. The 7-3 victory over Bar 180 A sets them up nicely for Tuesday’s trip to Terrace Bar A. The Legends B bandwagon rolls on in Division Two, and they stayed perfect for the season against Toscales Tangos.
They lead by two points after Target Rangers were held to a draw by Barracuda Bandits. Gaffers are up to third following a fine win at Terrace Bar B. Summerland Elite and Lupain drew the Los Cristianos derby, Hammres B saw off Bar Tasca, while Nauta B edged past Phoenix
Potters. Inn The Pink made it back-to-back wins at Woodys, and Tenerife Hammers C are finally up and running. They won 8-2 against Connors. Finally, congrats to Tal from Rat Pack, Mark from 180 B and Nauta B’s Derek on seven-ball victories this week.

DAVID PENNY Email: David.penny@canarianweekly.com
Day the Queen Mother just popped into our social club David Penny examines the three major social institutions which were formed around the turn of the last century in Las Palmas BY far the most influential of these social institutions is the British Club (El Club Ingles), which can trace its origins back to 1889, although it has existed in its present location since 1912. It was a British social club in the true sense, making much of patriotic celebrations over the years, such as coronations, royal weddings, jubilees and the like. And the membership fee was originally just one guinea (£1.05) per annum.) The club is also remembered for its annual Christmas parties, and entertained such visiting dignitaries as the future King George V (in 1890) when he was the Prince of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of York, later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, (in 1927) and Colonel Charles Lindberg (the famous trans-Atlantic solo aviator). Originally, the club was financed by the major British companies of the day, and among the original investors were Miller & Cia, The Gran Canary Coaling Co, Wilsons Son & Co, Elder & Fyffes, Blandy Bros and Yeoward Bros, as well as the Gran Canaria Slipway and Engineering Co Ltd. The club’s first president was Major Peter Swanston (known affectionately as Periquito), who had been Superintendent of Works for the construction of the port of Puerto de la Luz, and who was also British Vice-Consul from 1898 until his death in 1929. Other original officers of the club included FE Fisher, Vice-President; AE Hooper, Secretary; JJ Rankin, Treasurer, and the All-Spain tennis champion Sidney Head, who was the Auditor. The club numbered 57 members at its formation in 1910, and had grown to 112,
Page 48
including 33 ladies, by the following year. By 1977, membership had swelled to over 500 - and although most members today are Spanish, it is still going strong. The actual venue of the club (Casa Brown) is in a grand mansion, built at the beginning of the 20th century for the Scottish whisky millionaire Robert Brown. Following the death of Mr. Brown’s young son in 1906, the house was sold for £3,500 to The Elder Dempster Line, who annexed it to the Hotel Metropol and used it to accommodate the “fifteen pounders” (the somewhat disrespectful name given to the new wave of visitors who came out on £15 return tickets). The club its self was, and is, a meeting place for members and visitors and, over the past 100 years, has held innumerable fund-raisers for
donations to everything from Lord Haig’s Poppy Day Appeal, in November 1918, to sending comforts to the troops of the Spanish Legion, who were fighting in the Western Sahara during the 1920s. The club has well and truly embodied itself in the cultural history of Las Palmas, and is a living memorial to the influence our ancestors had on the island’s community. In 1890, The Seaman’s Mission was founded in Las Palmas to cater for the needs of British seamen, who found themselves disembarked in the city for whatever reason - perhaps sailing delays, or extended waiting times for those whose vessels were re-coaling. It was, in effect, a sailor’s home and occupied a magnificent edifice, which ran from Calle de Albareda to
Calle de Sagasta and fronted Las Canteras beach along the entire length of la Calle Las Palmas. Included in the amenities was a grand dining room, spacious bedrooms, a billiard room and a reading room. It was funded from London by the British and Foreign Sailors Society and The British Bible Society. The island’s British community also held fund-raisers to provide tobacco and other comforts, although alcohol was forbidden and the rules were strictly enforced. This establishment carried on its sterling work until its closure in 1952, when it was sold off and demolished. Shortly after the Seaman’s Mission first opened its doors, the Queen Victoria Hospital (Hospital Inglese) was inaugurated. This was located in the same area, and part of the former hospital site is now occupied
by the Hotel Cristina. It also enjoyed views over Las Canteras beach. Its origins can be traced back to 1878 when an English nurse, a Miss Hudson, started to care for sick and injured British seamen in her own home. The British “Clearing Houses” (companies involved in the business of shipping) heard of this and organised the construction of a purpose-built, modern hospital in 1891. Over the years, many thousands of sailors of all nationalities, races and religions have passed through its wards. In the early days, all the staff were British, with doctors Cross, Taylor, Parsons, Baxter and Harrison all prominent in this period. Later, English-speaking Canarian doctors were employed and among their numbers are the fondlyremembered Gonzalez
Hernandez, Ruano y Urquia, Roca Bosch and Valle Garcia. It became the custom among Canarian doctors to offer to serve at least part of their careers, working in their specialised fields, in this hospital, right up to its closure in 1966. An interesting fact is that, from its conception, not once in 75 years did the hospital receive a utilities bill for either water or electricity. The water came originally from The City Water Co Ltd., (an English company) and the electric power was generated by Unelco (at the time an American corporation). All serving nurses received the privilege of being made honorary life members of the British Club of Las Palmas. Sadly, in 1966 the hospital was closed and relocated to Paseo de la Cornisa. Next week, David Penny continues his look at days gone by in the Canaries
