Stamp of approval! Post Office pays a rare tribute to Teide’s National Park TENERIFE has been honoured by the national Post Office with the special launch of a Spanish stamp, depicting Teide’s National Park. The President of the Tenerife Cabildo, Ricardo Melchior, launched the new postage stamp issued by the Post Office in the Teide National Park, an initiative that is part of the series 'Natural areas of Spain', which ends on October 3rd. The value of the stamp is 0.45 euros and has a circulation of 320,000 copies. The stamp is part of the series Natural Spaces of Spain, which promotes protected areas around the country of great interest because of their high, ecological worth. The announcement was made at a ceremony on Wednesday, hosted by Ricardo Melchior, President of the Cabildo, at the Parador Nacional de Las Cañadas del Teide. Also in attendance were Carlos Javier de las Heras, territorial director of the Post Office for Santa Cruz, Emilio Atienzar, general director for the Environmental Quality at the Canary Islands Government, and Isaac Valencia, Mayor of La Orotava, The Parque Nacional del Teide, renowned for its ecological values, and for being the highest in Spain, was classed as a national park in January 1954. It is also the largest and longest-established national park in the Canaries, and one of the oldest in Spain. In 2007, it was designated a World Heritage Site by

Tenerife’s new 2010 stamp

UNESCO, and that same year the Parque Nacional del Teide was listed among the 12 “Treasures of Spain”. The stamp’s release will prove a boon for stamp collectors throughout the globe. Yes, stamp collectors, or philatelists, as they are also known! Despite today’s techo age, old-fashioned postage stamps are still a magnet for young and old alike. They have been around for more than 160 years, and there are still hundreds of active clubs and societies

The home of good shopping Come & See our *NEW LOOK* Store, in Los Cristianos - now Bigger & better! Opp. Paloma Beach Apts, CC Costamar, Los Cristianos and Las Chafiras

throughout the world. That’s because postage stamps, postcards and old postal history (letters), all have a story to tell. It doesn’t take much to get youngsters interested. True, they’ve got their consoles, Facebook and Twitter internet facilities, but nothing beats the real thing. Show them a picture and ask: “What are the pictures on the stamps? Who or what do they represent? Then watch them check it out on Google, or other search engines.

Most stamps show pictures of people and places from around the world, like past and present kings, queens and rulers of countries, dead or alive! They include leaders like Queen Victoria, previous US presidents and famous people. In addition, illustrations of wildlife, cars, airplanes events, places, TV/film stars and celebrities are all to be found adorning stamps. And if the stamp was used on a letter or parcel, what was the postmark? Where was it posted? Was the stamp issued to commemorate an important event? You will soon have the children looking up the answers and actually discovering history through stamps. Stamp collecting, or philately, is known as “The King of

Hobbies and the Hobby of Kings”, and for good reason. The British Royal Family has an extensive stamp collection, while for King George VI, it was a serious hobby. You can learn about the history and geography of the world just by collecting and sorting stamps - from those depicting explorers in

the Antarctic to lizards in the deserts. So, if you fancy a spot of philately, what better way to start than with a first-issue Tenerife stamp of Teide’s National Park? A previous Tenerife postage stamp, issued by the Spanish Post Office, is regarded as a collector’s item

The carrier launched a new base at East Midlands airport a year ago and also flies from Leeds-Bradford, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Blackpool and Belfast. Glasgow airport managing director Angela McMillan said: “Jet2.com is one of the UK’s most successful leisure airlines and its summer 2011 programme includes many of the Mediterranean’s most popular destinations.” She thanked investment agency Scottish Enterprise, Glasgow City Council and Renfrewshire Council for their “support towards delivery of this venture”. Spain sold 2.7 billion euros worth of 10-year, 4.0 percent coupon bonds and close to 1.3 billion euros worth of 30-year, 4.7 percent coupon bonds, coming in at the top end of a Treasury target. Yields fell sharply from the last auction in June, reducing Spain’s borrowing costs even if they remain high compared with core euro zone country debt. The successful auctions, seen as removing some of the debt risks attached to the euro, helped push the shared currency to its highest in more than a month at $1.3109. A source told Reuters that over 50 percent of the bonds were taken up by foreign investors. Earlier this year Spain was seen as heavily dependent on domestic buyers for its debt issues. “It’s been a tremendous success and it improves the horizon for Spain’s issues heading into the final quarter. It seems that Spain is gaining more credibility in the market,” said a trader with knowledge of the Treasury’s sales. Greece, whose finances are the most strained in the euro zone, has said that foreigners bought almost a third of its 1.2 billion euro sale of treasury bills on Tuesday, close to double the typical take-up by external investors. Spain has been struggling this year to assure markets it will avoid the fate of Greece and is in control of slashing its public deficit which reached 11.2 percent of gross

domestic product (GDP) in 2009. The yield on Spain’s 10year issue fell to 4.144 percent from 4.864 percent in June, while it eased to 5.077 percent from 5.908 percent on the 30-year issue. Spain also confirmed on Thursday after the auction that it would issue eight bonds in the fourth quarter, including a new five-year benchmark bond. Spain was the last country to go to the markets in a week of bumper euro zone bond issuance of around 30 billion euros ($39 billion). Earlier on Thursday France sold 8.47 billion euros of debt with demand seen at the top end of the range and the average yield falling across all three issues. Debt from core countries such as Germany attracted solid interest, while smaller treasury note issues from Portugal suffered from the heavy supply. On Wednesday, Portugal had to pay sharply higher yields to sell 750 million euros of 12-month treasury bills, given concerns over the country’s budget discipline. The French treasury sold 3.15 billion euros of September 2012 BTANs, 1 billion euros of July 2013 paper and 4.313 billion euros of July 2015 BTANs on Thursday. “The results were OK. Again we saw demand at the top of the range. It makes sense because in August we had both (longer-term) OAT and BTAN auctions cancelled ... so demand was there. All in all, it was a good result,” said Ioannis Sokos, strategist at BNP Paribas. Average yields fell for all three French issues, compared with a previous sale. Around 10 billion euros of French BTAN bonds matured this week, providing funds for reinvestment.

A WORD FROM OUR EDITOR

Canary Islands: Ley de Costas tourist industry still in recovery

Email: editor@canarianweekly.com

FIGURES released by both the Lanzarote and Tenerife tourist boards record double digit percentage increases in holidaymakers from key markets including the UK and Germany.

As we go to print we are receiving reports that buildings on the seafront in Las Galletas, Arona are being bulldozed. We have contacted the municipality of Arona who inform us that this is under jurisdiction of the ‘Costas’ and that the owners of properties will have been advised well in advance and in some circumstances have received compensation. The Spanish ‘Ley de Costas’ Coastal Law has been under debate for many years and remains highly controversial in Spain. The Spanish Government has noticed the serious criticism which the 1988 ‘Ley de Costas’ has been getting ever since the decision was made in 2004 by the then Environment Minister, Cristina Narbona, to put the law into effect. The law declared that the entire Spanish coastline, generally a 100m distance back from the waterline, belonged to the public. The law said that those who had a home legally built on the sand would be allowed to continue to use

the property for 60 years, but the owners would not be allowed to sell it. When the period is over the property would be owned by the State, which would then demolish it, with the idea being of clearing the coast of cement. Later an amendment was added allowing the property to be bought and sold until 1988. 92% of the nearly 8,000 kilometres of coast in Spain is affected Worthy or not the law has resulted in dozens of cases of litigation, demolitions and complaints from Brussels. The law has been among the targets of the UKIP Euro MP, Marta Andreasen, who has rushed to defend the rights of her constituents who find their property declared practically worthless overnight. In the Canaries it is proposed that the responsibility for the coast is transferred to the regional government, calling for ‘respect for existing constructions’. The CC and PP have approved a regional law on the Canaries to save the homes, but currently this is being appealed by central Government who have put the matter before the Constitutional Court.

Some hotels are already reporting that they`re achieving and surpassing prerecession capacity levels, while apartment rentals have seen a solid average increase of around 5 per cent over the summer. If these trends continue into next summer, the islands could potentially see record visitor numbers. The Canary Islands continues to defy travel industry expectations as new statistics point to a sharp increase in tourist numbers over the summer. Both Tenerife and Lanzarote have seen a boom in tourist numbers, with Lanzarote recording a significant 30 per cent increase in foreign visitors for July compared to last year`s figures. Meanwhile, non UK sales of holidays to Tenerife are up 8.92 per cent on 2009 figures, bringing in a total of 450,554 tourists to the island this July. “These are some fairly remarkable numbers, particularly within the context of some of the difficulties the

Arrivals from the United Kingdom, Lanzarote`s biggest source market, increased by 34.41 per cent compared to 2009, while the number of German visitors has increased by 44 per cent. Tenerife has seen more modest country-specific increases, with a rise in holidays by 14.79 and 9.31 per cent respectively. These figures point the Canary Islands towards a return to prerecession visitor levels, with an increase of only 4 per cent in sales of holidays in Lanzarote needed to match

pre-2008 numbers. “The Canary Islands` economy relies heavily on British tourism, so these numbers are very encouraging for local businesses,” continues Cooper. “Some hotels are already reporting that they`re achieving and surpassing pre-recession capacity levels, while apartment rentals have seen a solid average increase of around 5 per cent over the summer. If these trends continue into next summer, the islands could potentially see record visitor numbers.”

More foreign tourists – but less income THE SUMMER has ended with a recovery seen in the numbers of tourists visiting Spain, but not in the amount of money they spent. Growth in the Spanish tourism industry is still being held back by the competitive prices and the reduced spending per visitor. With the data for September still to be added, the summer has seen a 5% increase in tourist numbers generally, with the season saved by last minute reservations. Increases were seen in tourists from Norway, France, Belgium and Russia, while the British and German markets remained static. Numbers were also helped by expansion of the cruise

sector. Research shows that numbers were up between 4% and 5% between May 1 and August 31, but that income was ‘very similar to last year’. The tourism Euro-barometer for 2010 reported that 64% of Spaniards remained in Spain for their holidays this year. Speaking in Congress on Tuesday, the Prime Minister described this year as one of transition. José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero said a clear recovery in the tourism sector would be seen next year. Last year saw 52.27 million foreign visitors to Spain, distant from the 59.1 million seen in the record year of 2007. This year the number will be somewhere between the two.

Shark bait A GREAT white shark has been caught in the fishing cages of the coast in Palm Mar in the south of Tenerife. The great white shark, Carcharodon carcharias, also known as great white, white pointer, white shark, or white death, is a large lamniform shark found in coastal surface waters in all major oceans. The great white shark is very well known for its size, with the largest individuals known to have approached or exceeded 6 metres (20 ft) in length and 2,268 kilograms (5,000 lb) in weight. It reaches maturity at around 15 years of age and can have a life span of over 30 years. Contrary to popular belief the great white does not have a taste for human flesh. The best selling novel Jaws and the subsequent blockbuster film by Steven Spielberg depicted the great white shark as a “ferocious man eater”. In reality, humans are not the preferred prey item of the great white shark. Great white sharks are carnivorous, and prey upon fish tuna, rays, and other sharks. While great white sharks have killed a few humans, they typically do not target them: for example, in the Mediterranean Sea there have been 31 confirmed attacks against humans in the last two centuries, most nonfatal. Many incidents seem to be “test-bites“. Great white sharks also test-bite buoys, flotsam, and other unfamiliar

objects, and might grab a human or a surfboard to identify it. Many attacks occur in waters with low visibility, or other situations which impair

the shark’s senses. The species appears to not like the taste of humans, or at least finds the taste unfamiliar. Further research shows that they can tell in one bite

whether or not the object is worth attacking. Humans, for the most part, are too bony for their liking. They much prefer a fat, proteinrich seal.

Cigarettes go up in flames According to British news reports last Monday, 13th September, over 10m cigarettes were found hidden in boxes of tomatoes as they were attempting to be smuggled through the port of Felixstowe. The massive bulk was located in two containers shipped

from the Canary Islands. The UK Border Agency said that it is the biggest single seizure made at the port this year. The illegal came to light after problems with paperwork.

The smoky cargo would have cost the UK £2m in unpaid VAT and excise duty alone. Customs officers found four pallets of fresh toma-

toes hiding the cigarettes. Brian Hill, the UK Border Agency's assistant director at Felixstowe, said: "Cigarette smuggling is a serious organised crime and often provides the funding for much larger criminal operations, such as drug or people trafficking." But the haul has not gone to waste, more than two tones of tomatoes have been given to Colchester Zoo. The cigarettes will now be shredded and the pulp used to generate electricity for the national grid.

Spanish police smash heroin smuggling ring POLICE in Spain have smashed one of the biggest heroin trafficking rings to operate in the country in recent years, arresting 10 people and seizing 30 kilos of the drug, police said Monday. “Madrid was the nerve centre from where the head of the group gave orders to managed the activities of members in Iran, Iraq, Senegal, Ghana and Portugal,” police said in a statement. The suspected leaders of the group, which was based in Spain’s Canary Islands, were detained while they tried to flee to another unspecified European Union nation. Police seized the 30 kilos (66 pounds) of heroin in the

Canary Islands and in the northwestern region of Catalonia. The biggest seizure of heroin in Spain was carried out in August 2008 when police apprehended over 316 kilos of the drug on a yacht near Barcelona. Spain’s proximity to north Africa, a key source of hashish, and its close ties with its former colonies in Latin America, a major cocaine producing region, have made it a major gateway into Europe for drug traffickers.

Balcony death LAST WEEKEND the British press carried reports of yet another British tourist being killed as a result of falling from a hotel balcony; this time it was slightly different, as it was here in Tenerife. It was reported that Lee Robertson, aged 34, died after plunging from the balcony of his fourth-floor holiday hotel room. The tragic accident allegedly happened at the five star Bahia Principe resort, in the municipality of Adeje. Police have commented that there was no evidence to suggest that it was anything other than a tragic accident. The Spanish term it ‘Balconing’ falling from a balcony. The Bahia Principe is a four star hotel, with 478 rooms; they declined to com-

ment in relation to the incident. The British Consulate in Madrid confirmed the death and told Canarian Weekly, “we are providing ongoing consular assistance to the family.” Tour Operator First Choice with whom Mr Robertson was travelling said, “First Choice regrets to confirm that one of its customers tragically died while on holiday with us in Tenerife last week. However, in the interests of customer confidentiality, we are not at liberty to provide any further details at this time. We would like to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of the deceased at what must be a truly difficult time. Our team are continuing to offer every support and assistance to the family.”

HOUSE prices in Spain have gone up for the first time in nearly three years, improving by 1.6% in the second quarter of 2010, against the January-March period a year ago. In year-on-year terms, the figures released by the National Institute of Statistics shows that prices actually fell 0.9% between April and June. Yet these statistics show

that prices are not falling as sharply as before, and that the situation is much improved from the second quarter of last year, when there was a 7.7% drop. Experts believe there is more demand for homes, and that prices bottomed out after 2007. The increase in the number of autonomous communities showing price rises shows that the excess of finished, but unsold properties is going down.

A second runway is in the air

THE EUROPEAN Commission has considered that the proposed construction of a second runway at Tenerife Sur airport does not violate the directives concerning noise pollution and environmental protection. Janez Potocnik, European Commissioner for Environment, responded to a parliamentary question by Willy Meyer, MEP Spanish United Left (IU), ensuring that the Spanish authorities submitted the report and action plans of the airport

noise maps of southern Tenerife. Potocnik explained that it is possible that the plan should have an environmental impact assessment prior to implementation. Now, “according to information available, it appears that this project is still at a very early stage. In such circumstances, the Commission is unable to recognize any breach of the directive on environmental impact assessments at this stage, “said the commissioner. Meyer criticized in his questioning that there is no increase in air traffic on the island to justify the execution of works. Instead, he referred to “between 2000 and 2009, seven years in

which the annual number of passengers was reduced and only two in which grew in the previous year.” The MEP also argued that Tenerife already has an airport “with a great growth potential” and that works for the second track of the southern enclave will lead to “an unnecessary waste of 190 million euros.” He warned that expanding the airfield will increase greenhouse gas emissions and increase the noise in the area. Finally, regarding the possible financing of the European Union works, issue also asked Meyer, the commissioner said he did not know of “any such project, but added that.”

group The Spanish air Holiday death mystery traffic dispute in Benidorm is not resolved BARNSLEY police are looking into a spate of mysterious deaths following a Benidorm holiday by a group of friends.

A least three of the men, from South Yorkshire, have died since the trip last March, and as many as six of the friends are said to have passed away as well. Stephen Shaw, 48-year-old former chip-shop owner, died from a massive heart attack just days after the trip, and his death was put down as natural causes. But his widow, Carol, says three or four more from the group have also died, including one man who had to have hospital treatment while in

Spain. Police say they are investigating the claims on behalf of Barnsley coroner’s office. Local councillor Grace Brown claims six men have died in all, and she is demanding a full investigation. She said the coroner would not have noticed because he couldn’t have known the men all went on holiday together.

The USCA controllers’ union considers that the agreement signed on August 13 to avoid strike action is ‘bad’ and that AENA is not meeting it. Spokesman, Daniel Zamit,

said it was only a patch and that there is a real communication problem between the Minister and AENA. It comes just two weeks after the controllers met with the Minister for Development, José Blanco, and the union claims that there are things of which the Minister is not aware, and that his political credibility is on the line. They claim that AENA is not publishing the working shift in advance as agreed, they are not meeting the

safety rest times, and they are not providing detail on other work configurations. A bank transfer of a single cent, for delayed payments, made by AENA on September 13 to the controllers bank accounts, has also not gone down well. The USCA has said that they never renounced their right to strike, and that there will be union action of no answers are forthcoming. Meanwhile the new AFIS automated system which

AENA is trying to introduce to replace the controllers at Spain’s smaller airports is now in operation at La Gomera. It is due to come into operation at El Hierro on September 23. The controllers have claimed that quality of service is compromised by the system because safety has been reduced. They also note that a new international regulation expected in 2013 will ban the AFIS system on commercial flights. Source typically spanish

Spanish police found a huge 120kg haul buried in a lorryload of Dutch flowers on Wednesday in the Basque Country town of Durango, in Vizcaya. Swift work by officers from the National Police and the Guardia Civil prevented more than 400,000 doses of amphetamine sulphate reaching the market. The drug was hidden in a flower shipment, organised by a company run by a Dutch national, living in Burgos. His fleet of trucks were apparently making regular trips

between Amsterdam and Spain. The shipping company owner is thought to be responsible for contracting the shipment of drugs, which were destined for the north of Spain - the Basque Country and Navarra in particular. Having had the Dutch owner under surveillance since he left Spain for Holland, police controlled his entry into Spain in Irún. They continued following the vehicle to Durango, where he and another person in the truck were arrested after a search of the vehicle revealed four suitcases containing a total of 120kg of speed. The Dutchman’s home has also been searched, and his wife and another of the company’s lorry drivers have also been arrested.

Doctors’ orders: Just take a hike! AN INITIATIVE between the Spanish government and doctors could see prescriptions suggesting a long walk instead of medicine! Up to 40% of the population are now considered overweight with 15% obese, and Spanish doctors are to be

offered courses on the benefits of exercise and sport. That means they will soon be prescribing sport in some cases instead of medicines. An agreement was signed on Tuesday between Trinidad Jiménez, the Minister for Health, and Jaime Lissavetzky, Secretary of State for Sport They agreed that an example prescription could be “a half-hour walk a day”.

Crimestoppers bag another stray Cat! CRIMESTOPPERS have sent out a strong warning to wanted Britons on the run in Spain with another capture. They chalked up their 36th success with the arrest of alleged British drug dealer David Anthony Stuart in Barcelona on Tuesday. Stuart, nicknamed “Catman”, was one of the most wanted men in the UK. He is the latest capture for the brilliant Crimestoppers / Captura joint campaign (SOCA) between British and Spanish police. Trevor Pearce, Director

General of SOCA, said: “This is another excellent result of our partnership with Spain. “It would seem that plenty of British fugitives and criminals still haven’t worked out that basing themselves in

2010 Prince of Asturias prizes. The organisation has received the prestigious Concord prize for “helping millions of people worldwide” to improve their living conditions. Eight Prince of Asturias prizes, each worth 50,000 euros, are awarded annually in categories such as arts, scientific research, sports, letters and humanities. British author JK Rowling, who wrote the Harry Potter books, is among past winners. Manos Unidas (Hands United) is a non-governmental body which “fights

against under-development, illness, oppression, lack of education and hunger”, said the Prince of Asturias jury. “In its 50 years of history, it has done significant humanitarian and social work, helping millions of people to access education and health services.” The group has supported around 25,000 projects, spread over more than 64 countries in Asia, Africa, America and Oceania. Last year’s Concord prize went to the city of Berlin, noted as the “symbol of Europe’s reunification” Past winners have also included Jerusalem’s

Lego firm is hit with a brick in trademark case

Boss wants more help for £21bn UK Fashion THE BRITISH fashion industry has called for more Government support as new figures show it is now worth £21bn to the UK economy.

LEGO has said it fears other firms will now copy its distinctive brick shape after it lost a major court case. The Danish toymaker had tried to have its snap-together plastic bricks registered as an exclusive trademark in the European Union. The company had argued that studs on top of the bricks made them highly distinctive and, thus, eligible for trademark rights. But the Luxembourg-based European Union Court of Justice (ECJ) upheld a 2008 ruling by the General Court, which dismissed Lego’s challenge to a decision by trademark agency OHIM.

OHIM had repealed an earlier move to grant trademark rights for Lego bricks after objections from Canadian toymaker Mega Brands. Peter Kjaer, the head of Lego’s intellectual property section, said. “It is naturally a matter of concern to us that use of the brick by others can dilute the trademark. “But the worst aspect is that consumers will be misled.” Experts said that rivals could now copy the design as long as it does not have the name Lego on it, which is trademarked. However, if there is no name, Lego could still argue its case on the grounds of unfair competition if its feels that customers are being misled.

17 September 2010 - 23 September 2010

The ECJ ruling said: “The position of an undertaking which has developed a technical solution cannot be protected... by conferring a monopoly on that undertaking through registering as a trademark the three-dimensional sign consisting of that shape. “But can, where appropriate, be examined in the light of rules on unfair competition.” Shireen Peermohamed, a lawyer at Harbottle & Lewis, said the court ruled “it wasn’t in the public interest that something that was purely functional should be able to be protected. It precluded people from using the same technical function.” She added: “A distinctive shape can in principle be reg-

istered as a trademark, unless it is exclusively one which is necessary to obtain a technical result. “This is where Lego’s brick shape fell down, in contrast for example to the shape of the Coca-Cola bottle which has been registered.” Ms Peermohamed went on: “The court effectively took the view that all the essential characteristics of the Lego brick did perform a technical function - to enable bricks to be connected and stacked even if other minor features did not, and this precluded registration. “This is not the first time that shape trade marks have been denied protection on these grounds - dishwasher tablets and shavers too have faced similar objections.”

The British Fashion Council chairman said: “I like to think we are definitely number one. We’re new, we’re innovative.” The industry directly employs 816,000 people, and its wider contribution, ranging from IT to tourism, is calculated at a further £16bn, a study by consultants Oxford Economics found. The findings, released ahead of London Fashion Week, rank the industry as the 15th largest in the UK, similar in size to the food and beverage and telecoms sectors. The study found growth was driven by the influence of the UK’s top end designer sector on “mainstream” high street retailers and supermarkets, and the expansion of fashion brands into perfume, accessories and homeware. But it highlighted a number of challenges facing the sector. These included a lack of business skills among many smaller fashion companies, the impact of the recession and the strength of competing fashion hubs like New York and Milan. Among the report’s recommendations are a campaign to promote the industry to young people and better business training in fashion

courses. Mr Tillman was keen to emphasise that the sector, including retail, was the country’s second biggest employer. He said: “Fashion is a great British success story and this landmark piece of research underlines its true scope and economic impact. “This is just the first step to creating a detailed national action plan for the industry which will help to support its future growth and success. “I am committed to driving this forward and to ensuring that we come together as an industry to work with Government to discuss forthcoming challenges and agree the support required to overcome them.” Minister for creative industries Ed Vaizey said: “I look forward to continuing to work with the British Fashion Council to make sure that the Government does what it can to further support the industry.” Mr Tillman also shrugged off the suggestion that highend brands like his will be hit hard in the tough economic climate. “Fashion retail businesses in the UK are well managed and we always actually come through during tough times. I have no fear about the growth of our businesses.” His comments came after high street chain Next warned the cost of its clothes could rise by 8% next year because of a planned VAT hike and a cotton shortage.

Fresh Middle East attacks as talks go on ISRAELI jets have bombed targets in Gaza while Palestinian militants attacked Israel, as peace talks continued in Jerusalem with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The Israeli army said a rocket and eight mortar bombs fired from the Gaza Strip - a Palestinian territory run by Hamas - landed in southern Israel. This was the highest daily total since March 2009. But no one was hurt in the latest attacks. Warplanes responded by bombing a smuggling tunnel along the Gaza-Egypt border. Palestinian officials said a 23-year-old man was killed and two other people were wounded in the attack. The Israeli military has claimed 150 rockets and mortar bombs have been fired from the Gaza Strip so far this year. Israel launched a devastating 22-day offensive in Gaza in December 2008 with the aim of stopping cross-border rocket attacks. In Jerusalem, Mrs Clinton

said Israeli and Palestinian leaders were “getting down to business” on the major issues dividing them. But there was no sign they were any closer to resolving a looming crisis over Israeli West Bank settlements. She was in Jerusalem for a second day of talks aimed in part at ending the impasse, a day after meeting Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Egypt. Asked if they had made progress, Mr Netanyahu told reporters: “We’re working on it ... It’s a lot of work. “And I am glad to have the opportunity to welcome President Abbas and Secretary Clinton here pursuing peace, and I think we should get on with (it).” It was Mr Abbas’ first visit to the official residence in Jerusalem of Israel’s prime minister since Mr Netanyahu took office 18 months ago. The Palestinian president wrote in the visitors’ book: “Today I returned to this house after a long period of absence in order to continue the talks and the negotiations.” He said this was “in the hope of arriving at an eternal peace

in all the region, and especially peace between the Israeli people and the Palestinian people”. Mr Abbas has threatened to walk out of the negotiations if Israel resumes construction in the settlements after a 10month slowdown expires at the end of the month. President Barack Obama’s pursuit of a Middle East settlement is a centrepiece of his foreign policy and hopes to forge a deal within a year. He and Mrs Clinton have called on Mr Netanyahu to extend the slowdown, and the Israeli leader has signalled he is looking for a compromise. Earlier this week, he said the current curbs will not remain in place after the end of this month, though he will continue to restrict building activity to some extent. The Palestinians oppose the settlements because they take up land they want for their future state. Some 300,000 Israelis live scattered among the West Bank’s 2.5 million Palestinians. And 200,000 other Israelis live in east Jerusalem, the section of the holy city the Palestinians claim as their capital.

Mercedes offices raided during price-fix inquiry Regulators have raided the British offices of German vehicle maker Mercedes-Benz as part of an investigation into alleged price-fixing by major truck manufacturers. The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) confirmed it was looking into suspected cartel activity involving commercial vehicle manufacturers in the UK. It said it had launched both criminal and civil investigations into alleged price-fixing. One individual has been arrested and released on bail in connection with the case, the OFT confirmed. It said investigations were at an early stage and it has not yet decided whether the law has been broken. The organisation is also

Page 12

thought to have also requested information from German truck maker MAN and Sweden’s Scania. The raid at Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz office in Milton Keynes is said to have taken place on Tuesday and the firm is reportedly co-operating with the probe. It could prove to be the watchdog’s most high-profile criminal cartel case since the collapse of the British Airways price-fixing trial. Under OFT rules, companies involved in price-fixing can be fined up to 10% of their annual turnover and executives

face the threat of prosecution and a maximum jail term of five years. An OFT spokesman said: “The OFT is investigating suspected cartel activity involving commercial vehicle manufacturers in the UK. “Investigations are being carried out under both the Enterprise Act 2002 and the Competition Act 1998. The investigations are at an early stage. “The OFT will not be in a position to conclude whether it considers the law has been infringed until it has completed its investigations and assessed the available evidence.”

Dad pedalled The Apolo Centre round Europe to find his son Car park NOW OPEN

AN AUSTRALIAN man who rode his bicycle thousands of kilometres around Europe looking for his missing son has found him in Holland. Andrew Thompson was taken to Frankfurt by his mother Melinda in 2008 when he was three years old. The boy’s father, Ken, has not seen him since the pair disappeared. Police and Interpol efforts to find Mr Thompson’s estranged wife failed so he decided to hunt for them himself.

Melinda Stratton once worked in London, so his twowheeled search began in the UK. After finding nothing, Mr Thompson moved on to other European countries including France, Belgium and Germany. Last week he received an anonymous email saying his son, now aged six, was in Amsterdam - and the tip-off proved correct. Ms Stratton has been arrested and is now in custody awaiting extradition to Australia. Mr Thompson had been cycling for over three months in the search for his son, while also highlighting the plight of parents of abducted children.

Father and son have not yet been reunited and it is believed child psychologists are preparing Andrew for the meeting. Mr Thompson said: “I think it’s important that he starts to get some stability back in his life but it needs to be managed very carefully. “I can’t just walk in and pick him up and expect him to know who I am and understand what’s happening. “We need to manage that process very carefully so that he has time to come to terms with the fact that his father is coming back into his life and he needs to feel comfortable about that.”

Cruel care worker caught on camera abusing lady of 91 A CARE WORKER has been charged with abusing a 91-year-old woman after her actions were caught on camera. The disturbing footage emerged after the victim’s family noticed bruising on the elderly woman’s face. Carmen Pereira, 52, was arrested after the woman’s relatives showed police the

footage from a Skype feed set up to record continuously in the patient’s room in New Jersey, US. The camera had been set up so the family could communicate more easily with the woman who suffers from Alzheimer’s. Pereira had been with the family for 11 years and there had never been any sign there was a problem before, the family has said. “Heartbreaking, it is, to see

your own mother abused by a person whom you trusted for so many years,” said her daughter Bernadine Samin, who lives in Virginia. Pereira has been charged with assault and neglect charges, and has been released on bail. The victim’s daughters Ms Samin and Cresencia Obaldo, from Jersey City, said they had allowed police to release the video to raise awareness of this sort of abuse.

THE MINISTRY of Defence has been slammed for “astonishing” failures in its purchase of a new £10.5bn fleet of tankers and transport aircraft.

The MoD made ‘huge errors’ in a fleet deal

MPs on the influential Public Accounts Committee (PAC) have said the MoD agreed to sign up to the deal even

though it had no idea whether or not it was getting value for money. According to a PAC report,

despite the vast cost the aircraft are not even equipped to fly on missions in Afghanistan. To kit them out with suffi-

cient protection for combat zones would cost the taxpayer hundreds of millions more. The deal was struck as a

Wife of former England cricketer took own life THE WIFE of former England cricketer Chris Broad took her own life as her health faded during a battle with motor neurone disease, a coroner has ruled. Michelle Broad, 60, was found by husband Chris at their home in West Bridgford, Nottingham, on 6th July, Nottinghamshire Coroner Dr Nigel Chapman said. A syringe was found beside her and the events organiser had taken a fatal combination of the drugs Diazepam and Tramadol. The inquest in Nottingham

heard Mr Broad gave a statement that his wife, known as Miche, was a very “active” and “outgoing” lady but was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in May 2009. She had steadily declined and had to have a

feeding tube fitted in her stomach. He said while on holiday in Alaska about eight weeks before her death, Mrs Broad - stepmother to England cricketer Stuart Broad developed pneumonia. The

coroner said: “Chris found her at home on July 6, 2010, on the bed with a syringe in her hand. “She was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre where she died in the early hours of the 7th. “She had written a number of letters to people and emails to people and she did not want to become a burden, and her main problem was she was losing the ability to talk, her speech was going.” Dr Chapman recorded a verdict that Mrs Broad had taken her own life.

Private Finance Initiative (PFI), which means a private company covers the initial cost and is then gradually reimbursed by the taxpayer - with a premium added on top. PFI has been criticised in the past because although it allows infrastructure projects to be carried out quickly, it obliges the taxpayer to pay back much more than the initial cost for years - sometimes decades - to come. Committee chair Margaret Hodge said: “It is simply astonishing that it took until 2006 to recognise that the new aircraft should be able to fly into highthreat environments like Afghanistan. “Four years later, (the MoD) has still not decided whether to fit the necessary protective equipment... because of the implications this would have for the cost of the PFI.” It comes amid a growing row over the cost of the UK’s nuclear capability. Senior Tories have expressed alarm at reports that the Government could put off the

final decision on whether to go ahead with the replacement of the four missile-carrying submarines - due to be announced in 2014 - until after the election in 2015. The outgoing head of the armed forces warned the PAC that the Government might as well scrap Britain’s nuclear deterrent if the decision is taken to downgrade it. Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup said any lesser replacement for Trident would not be “credible”. Sir Jock stressed that it was for politicians to decide whether the UK should have a nuclear deterrent. But assuming the Government’s commitment to that principle, the Chief of the Defence Staff said: “We have to have the minimum credible deterrent. “If you are not going to have that, then you are better off having zero.” However, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg insisted no decision had been made on the issue of Trident.

nomic climate and this move, which comes with the Trust’s assurances that it will not significantly impact on the quality of services provided to

licence fee payers, will be welcomed by the public.” The BBC had been entitled to increase the fee by 2% in the next financial year and up to 2% for the following 12 months. However the Trust is also entitled to keep the BBC’s needs under review to make sure that spending is appropriate. It comes just two days after BBC Trust chairman Sir Michael Lyons wrote to Mr Hunt to say he did not wish to carry on in his role when his first term finishes. Sir Michael has warned the cuts will not be “pain-free”. “In June, as part of the Trust’s role in ensuring value for money at the BBC, we asked the Executive to see if they could make further savings on top of the existing three per cent year-on-year efficiencies, so that the BBC does not ask licence fee-payers to pay any more than they need to for BBC services. “A freeze in income will not be pain-free, and this decision

was not taken lightly. “But the Trust is satisfied that the BBC can manage the impact while

continuing to deliver the range of programmes and services that the public loves.”

MOTORWAY Record increase in BREAKFAST UK unemployment BRITAIN has seen the largest rise in employment since records began - with 286,000 people landing new jobs in the last quarter. A DRIVER has been caught on camera eating a bowl of cereal - while at the wheel of a lorry on a busy motorway. Spotted travelling along the M25 near South Mimms, Hertfordshire, the irresponsible motorist can be seen using both hands to eat his breakfast. Jo Bullock, from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, said: "I dare say many drivers have seen others around them eating a packet of crisps or a bar of chocolate. "But not many people will have seen someone actually eating from a bowl while at

the wheel, so this is a pretty extreme case. "When you're at the wheel, your primary focus should be on driving, so it is disappointing to see a professional driver engaged in an activity that could be so distracting." She added that the group urged employers to organise drivers' shifts to discourage them from stealing a bite to eat while on the road. Joel Hickman, from road safety charity Brake, said: "Eating cereal whilst driving is completely unacceptable and poses a serious risk to other motorists. "To put it simply, motorists who eat behind the wheel are putting other people’s lives in jeopardy."

The record-breaking leap is due largely to the number of those classed as “economically inactive” - such as students - taking jobs. Most of the new posts are not being filled by the longterm unemployed who are still claiming one of the three out-of-work benefits, the figures showed. Overall, unemployment fell by 8,000 to 2.47 million in the three months to July, the Office for National Statistics said. Meanwhile the closely watched Jobseeker’s Allowance claimant count rose by an unexpected 2,300 to 1.47 million. That is the first increase since January. Employment minister Chris Grayling said: “Today’s jump in

employment, driven by the private sector, is good news but it doesn’t disguise the fact that the system the Government inherited is failing to get people on welfare into these jobs. “It is neither fair for the nearly five million people on benefits, nor the taxpayer who supports them.”

The quarterly rise in employment, which was the largest since the ONS began collecting the data in 1971, was driven by a rise in both part-time and full-time workers. Those in part-time work increased by 166,000 quarter-on-quarter to 7.9 million in the three months to July.

But the number of full-time workers soared by 121,000 to 21.2 million in an encouraging sign for the UK labour market. The number of full-time students in employment rose by 47,000 in the three months to July, while those students classed as economically inactive fell by 62,000.

Who’ll take over London Stadium after the Games?

THE RACE to take over the stadium that will be the centrepiece of the London Olympics in 2012 is about to hot up. So far only three parties are known to have expressed an interest but a “handful” of others are expected in the next fortnight. They have until September 30 to submit their bids to the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC). The OPLC is the body which is tasked with finding a tenant for the 80,000-seater venue in Stratford, east London.

“I wouldn’t say we’ve been inundated with bids so far but we weren’t expecting to be,” said an OPLC spokesman. “We’ve been told to expect a handful of bids in the final week and we’re sure that’ll be the case.” Among the known runners are Premier League football club West Ham, who have massive debts and desperately need a bigger ground. AEG, the firm which runs the O2 Arena nearby, has also declared an interest, along with the London-based financial company Intermarket. There were fears it would be difficult to find anyone to

take over the Olympic Stadium owing to restrictions imposed by the London Games organisers. They originally insisted the athletics track must be kept and the number of seats reduced to 25,000. They have since been persuaded to allow up to 60,000 seats, to make the stadium a more viable commercial proposition. After September 30, the OPLC board will take a month to draw up a list of preferred bidders. These will then be asked to submit a more detailed application before a final decision is made next spring.

An unexpected fall in UK high street trading RETAIL SALES in the UK were down by 0.5% in August compared with July, the first monthly fall since January, official figures show. Sales of food, fuel, clothes and household goods were all down, said the Office For National Statistics (ONS) Non-food stores were the worst hit in August, with sales dipping 0.7%, driven largely by household goods stores. Food stores saw a decline of 0.5%, according to the ONS. It also said the sales growth in July was worse than previously calculated, revising the result down to 0.8% from 1.1% previously. The fall in August brings an end to six months of growth on the high street and signals a turn for the worse in consumer spending. News of the unexpected decline came amid a flurry of warnings from major retailers such as Next and John Lewis over the impact of next month's Government spending cuts. Shops are also facing next January's VAT hike to 20%, and some are battling higher costs, with cotton prices at a 15-year high. Analyst James Knightley at ING bank said: "The August UK

retail sales numbers are awful. "This report does contradict somewhat the data from the CBI and British Retail Consortium, while both the Gfk and Nationwide consumer sentiment surveys had risen in August. "That said, we suspect consumer spending growth will remain subdued." Howard Archer, top economist at IHS Global Insight said: "The unexpected 0.5% fall in retail sales in August is a nasty shock and deals a significant blow to growth hopes. "Indeed, it will likely fuel fears of a double dip, given the importance of consumer spending to the economy and the fact that the fall in sales were broad based in August. "Furthermore, August's drop in retail sales occurred despite evidence that there was competitive pricing on the high street." Vicky Redwood at Capital Economics said: "August's fall in retail sales could be the first sign that the surprising resilience of consumer spending recently could be coming to an end." But she cautioned against reading too much into one month's reading. Three-month data from the ONS showed a rise of 1.4% on the previous quarter.

Kos boat crash Brit: ‘I thought it was a bomb’ A PASSENGER onboard a catamaran that crashed into a dock on the Greek holiday island of Kos has described the moment the collision happened. Barrie Dale was on the top deck of the ship, called Aegean Cat, when it hit the dock. It was travelling from the Turkish resort of Didim to Kos with 213 passengers, most of them from the UK. “The first thing I thought was that it was a bomb,” he said. “There were two bangs, the boat hit the dock twice, and everyone was thrown to the floor. “In the impact a lot of people fell over a woman broke her leg as a result.” As many as 25 British tourists were feared injured after a catamaran crashed into a dock on the island of Kos. Six crew members were also on board the boat,

which is operated by Marmaris Cruise, when the accident happened. Five passengers were seriously hurt and 20 sustained minor injuries. None of the injuries are thought to be life threatening, the Ministry of Mercantile Marine in Greece said. Those most seriously hurt suffered broken bones, with all victims of the crash being treated in a local hospital. Mr Dale said some passengers were injured by falling

debris on the boat. “There was a large picture on the wall and in the crash it fell and the glass shattered everywhere,” he said. “People had cuts and bruises on their heads and faces because of it.” The cause of the accident is being investigated. Deputy island mayor David Gerasklis said the ship may have suffered a mechanical failure, and crashed twice into the jetty. “After one attempt (to dock), it returned with

greater force and crashed into the dock for a second time,” he said. “Some of the passengers apparently got up to see what happened, and they were injured in the second crash. “Some people were injured by glass from windows that shattered in the second collision.” Some of those with minor injuries have been released from hospital and are expected to return to Turkey on a different boat.

The Pope in Britain for a four-day tour Tweeters tweeted to new-look site TWITTEr has launched its first major redesign to give users more chance to check out pictures and video. The social networking tool which has 160 million users is now spreading information over two panels instead of one page. One of the panels features the flow of 90 million messages or tweets posted on the site every day. The other panel displays images within the text. Until now, most links to photos and video have been displayed on other websites or

Page 18

browser tabs. Twitter chief executive Evan Williams launched the redesign at Twitter's San Francisco HQ, saying 370,000 new users were joining every day. Deals had been made with 16 photo and video sites including YouTube and Flickr, meaning visual content can now be directly embedded on the Twitter site. The new format - which Twitter hopes will attract more advertisers as users spend longer on the site - will be rolled out in the coming month.

Pope Benedict XVI has arrived in Scotland to begin his four-day tour of Britain. It is the Pope’s first official visit as Head of State, although it is not classed as a State visit, as matters of state will not be discussed its purpose is purely religious. It is the first time Britain has welcomed a Pontiff since Pope John Paul II made a pastoral visit in 1982. But it has been overshadowed by the withdrawal of Cardinal Walter Kasper, a key member of the entourage, just days after he labelled Britain a ‘Third World country’ - as well as the ongoing

child abuse scandal. Pope Benedict will be greeted by the Queen in Edinburgh, then go to Glasgow to conduct an open-air Mass before heading to London, where he will meet Prime

Minister David Cameron. His Holiness will tour the capital for two days and then travel to Birmingham for his last day before returning to Rome. Speaking in the Vatican ear-

lier this week, the Pope thanked Britons for their hard work ahead of his visit. “I am aware of the vast amount of work that has gone into the preparations for the visit, not only by the Catholic community but by the Government, the local authorities in Scotland, London and Birmingham,” he said. “I want to say how much I appreciate the efforts that have been made to ensure that the various events planned will be truly joyous celebrations.” Thousands of devoted Catholics are expected to turn out to see the Pope at each of his public events.

This week at Live Arico Marilyn’s just too sharp for the men MARILYN PENDLETON had more fun than anyone else in the Fun Golfers’ three-club challenge at Los Palos last Sunday by beating them all. A great day’s golf was had by everyone, except for Julia Fleming who, sadly, twisted her ankle and had to retire.

Page 20

Sean Bible was runner-up to Marilyn, with Steve Jones third. But when it came to the Nearest the Pin contest, the ladies missed out again, with Steve Jones showing how it should be done for the men. The Fun Golfers meet once a month on Sundays at Los Palos, and anyone interested in joining them should contact Clive Rollinson on 922 797 640.

It’s raining puppies We have had an influx of adorable puppies left at the refuge lately, and if you can give one a loving home, please call us. Take a look at the puppy pound by following this link: http://www.youtube.com/wa tch?v=X8fVgCpzfw8 Our thanks to All at tour companies Thomson and First Choice, who held a fabulous, joint fund-raising raffle for Live Arico and the Family Holiday Association, featuring spectacular prizes. The raffle was organised by the firms’ Flight Seat Sales department, at the Thomson flights office in CC El Duque and proved to be a great success. They told us: “We sold 970 raffle tickets at one euro a ticket, so we raised 970 euros. The money will be split equally between the FHA and Live Arico. Winners were all contacted on Friday afternoon and told of the good news.” Many, many thanks to all who bought tickets. Second shop imminent Our second shop is just about ready to open its doors. We just need to get a couple of bits of paper and we’re there! It is situated in San Eugenio, opposite La Niña Hotel, near Amanda’s Bar, and we hope to target the tourist market with books, beach items and other holiday essentials. We still need racking and shelving, however, so please

call Debbie on the number below if you can help. We also need volunteers to work in both the new shop and our shop in Silencio. If you can spare a few hours a week, are reliable, trustworthy and love dogs, then, please call Debbie. Thank you. Tired of boot sales? Sell your unwanted items in a more tranquil environment at the Terrace Bar, Amarilla Golf, from 1pm to 3.30pm on Sundays. The next one will be on 26th September. At just five euros per table and proceeds going directly to Live Arico, we are expecting these afternoons to be a huge success. Call Ruth on 636 306 397 to reserve your table. Upcoming events Next Wednesday (22nd), we have a fund-raiser at the Ocean View Bar, Hotel Comodoro, Los Cristianos. Tickets are just six euros and include live entertainment, plus a delicious pie-and-pea supper. Call Suzy on 629 388 102 to get your tickets, or pop into the bar. The following Sunday (26th), we will be holding a benefit at La Guagua, Fañabe Beach Front. Details to be confirmed next week. Then, on Sunday, 24th October, we will be holding a fun day, at Chipeque Pool Bar, Los Cristianos. Watch this space for details. female, is now required by Live Arico. This is paid direct to Hospivet Sur on collection of your new pet, which will be chipped, neutered, vaccinated and wormed. At just five euros, you will receive a certificate from Live Arico for now, and your name, address and number of square metres purchased will be on a Roll of Honour at the new refuge. Sunday 19 September, 9:00pm - 10:45pm, Channel 4 Based on Steven Gould’s sci-fi novels for teens, this big-budget adventure asks: what would you do if you could “jump” anywhere in the world in the blink of an eye? Reluctant hero David (Hayden Christensen) decides to rob banks and go sightseeing. The problem is - illegalities aside, of course David’s not the only Jumper out there. And he’s on someone’s hit list. Pursued by dedicated assassin Roland (Samuel L Jackson), David hooks up with fellow teleporter Griffin (Jamie Bell) and begins to learn more about his extraordinary gift. Director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) turns in a youthful adventure that plays on adolescents’ thirst for freedom from responsibility (and the limits of geography), while establishing a workable mythology with one eye on a future franchise. The global jumping lets the production team set up fight sequences on the Sphinx and car chases through Tokyo, but Liman disappointingly underplays ideas about the corrupting consequences of power in favour of maintaining a hip, cool edge.

Music Matters

Email: liam@canarianweekly.com

We’re in a timewarp! THIS week’s album chart is the busiest week of the year, second only to the Christmas period. Students leaving home, and academic incentives, are among the many reasons that CD sales hit a high in September. The end of the summer festival season is also cited, because the acts and artistes involved find it the best time to throw themselves into writing, recording and promoting. We can expect a brand new top five this Sunday, with new material from Phil Collins, Robert Plant, Linkin’ Park and The Script all expected to peak at the top end of the chart. No, it’s not 1996, but reading the release list for this week seems to be a time-warp. Underworld, Weezer and Skunk Anansie were big news 14 years ago. All three acts had hit albums in the late Nineties, and all have been on the back-burner since. The panic that ensued back then seems a little overexcited now. CD burners were a new thing, and everyone thought the RockStar era was over. You could buy a pirate copy of a ten-euro album for half the price. But 14 years later, those same RockStars are still in the biz. They still live in

mansions and drive big cars. The Script are relative new boys to this week’s illustrious list, and seem set to sell exactly the same number of records as Kula Shaker did in September 1996 to get to No1. Phil Collins turns 60 in January, releases a new album this week - and there’s no stopping the record-breaking artist. He had the most top-40 hits on the Billboard charts in the Nineties, and is in the top three biggest-selling male artistes of all time who have had solo careers, and success as part of a band. Along with Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney, he has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide. He is the most successful drummer of all time and is partially deaf (through an infection in 2000 and not his drumming). He has won multiple Grammys, Academy Awards and Golden Globes for his songwriting, yet his eighth and latest release is an album of covers. As a fan, I was a little disappointed at first that one of the most prolific songwriters of all time had gone down the “Songbook” road. That was, until I found out that my drumming idol had damaged two vertebrate on the last Genesis tour and could no longer play drums or piano. The progressive rock pioneer won’t give up

easily, and his injury is the main reason he has recorded a covers album.

released the Supremes hit You Can’t Hurry Love , earning him his first solo No1.

This Plant keeps growing stronger The Black Country has given us Ian Hill (Judas Priest), Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy) and their most famous son, Robert Plant, who is set to score his 11th solo studio album since leaving Led Zepplin in 1982. He has reformed his childhood group, Band of Joy, for a tour and a new record. During the Sixties, Band of Joy were a popular soul-andblues band around the Midlands, particularly followed by the Mods. His heady days of Led Zepp seem to be behind him as he returns to his roots. John Bonham was an early member of the band before fol-

Motown was his first musical love, a sample of which we heard in 1982 when he

His most famous song, In The Air Tonight, famously, and quite understandably, missed out on the UK top spot because of John Lennon’s massive hit Woman . It was the first single to be released after the Beatle’s death in December 1980. Collins’ new album, Going Back, is his first in eight years, and faithfully recreates the raw sound of Motown, with covers from The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas and the’ Doobie Brothers. Chester Thompson, his friend and a world-famous drummer, was lined up to put down the drum parts in the studio. However, with drumsticks taped to his hands, Collins managed to play the instrument on every track. It was the first time he had played the songs since his boyhood, and was, he says, “A dream come true”

lowing Plant into The Zepp. The drummer died in Rock ‘n’ Roll style in 1980, with Led Zepplin disbanding soon after refusing to continue without their friend and drummer.

Robert Plant returns, 40 years on, to the Band of Joy without his original drummer. His interpretations of midFifties Blue Grass and Country blues classics take

his early inspirations into a new era. It will almost certainly be another top-five hit for the 62-year-old rocker, but in his 30-year solo career, the No1 spot has eluded him, unlike his 80% hit rate with his former band. He is unlikely to recreate the furore of his Zepp days, with Stairway to Heaven still in the top 100-played radio songs of all time. It was, incidentally, released as a single despite the urban myth. However, that single never materialised until 2007’s greatest hits album Mothership. At an un-radio-friendly eight minutes long, It remains the most requested US FM Radio station song ever, marking the West Brom boy the most famous of their famous sons.

MARIANO E ZUNINO SIRI Understanding the Law Email: marianozunino@canarianweekly.com

Friendly solution THE European Accident Friendly Statement, or European Part of Accident (Declaracion Amistosa de Accidentes de Automoviles), has been applied in Spain since 1987. This is considered the easiest way to solve a conflict following an automobile accident, and is regulated by Royal Law Decree 8/2004. It is now in force all over the European Union, and the form can be filled in irrespective of the language or nationality of the people involved. That’s because every box is located in the same position in different languages. Normally, there are two carbon copies, but sometimes three. It is always recommended that you to use this application form in case of small damages, with no injuries (or non-serious one). By using a Friendly Statement, The incident could be resolved much quicker than other cases (especially if there is a court case), and it helps the insurance companies involved. Although it has been applicable for such a long tine, many insurance companies say there are large numbers of people who do not know how to handle it. In most of the cases, the errors committed are so simple, like not signing the Statement, not filling in all the boxes, or the lack of a detailed sketch. If the people involved in the accident decide to use the Friendly Statement, there would be a couple of things for them to bear in mind. First of all, they should try to avoid interrupting the traffic if possible and, before moving the cars, they should take pictures of them. Nowadays, everybody seems to have a mobile phone with a photo camera, and the drivers involved should photograph the street, and any tyre marks or damage to the cars. And, of course, they should take note of the other fellow’s number plate (just in

case he does not want to cooperate). Experience shows that to argue with the other driver about the responsibility or culpability is a waste of time. This task is reserved for the insurance companies and, basically, because the Part of Accident does not require this information. Initial steps After immobilising the vehicles, both parties should start filling in the statement with details like date and hour, number plates, names, insurance companies, etc. They should also sketch the damaged parts of the car and, if possible, show the direction and movements of the cars, stating names of the streets and adding telephone

17 September 2010 - 23 September 2010

numbers. The names and telephone numbers of any witnesses should also be taken, in case they are needed later. Finally, if a “friendly” agreement is not feasible, the Local Police or Guardia Civil should intervene in order to do an “atestado” (official report made by the authority). That is why is very important to take all the information possible. Assuming both parties fill in the statement, do not forget to go box after box and UNDERSIGN it. Without the two signatures the statement is not valid. Remember that any person involved in an accident has legal obligations, like stopping without causing dangerous to

traffic; getting an idea of the circumstances and consequences in order to fix a list of preferences; help the victims; co-operate with authorities; communicate his identity to other persons involved, etc. Remember, also, that it is a serious offence not to give the Traffic Law (agents of authority) the identity and details they request. You then send the statement to the insurance companies, who will certainly do their best to find an amicable arrangement. Finally, you can download from internet the European Part of Accident. When to call the police There are many cases when police intervention is necessary, among them:

· Serious accident · Injured people · If the other driver wants to run away, or denies identification · If one of the drivers seems to be influenced by alcohol or drugs · If more than two vehicles are involved · The other driver refuses to sign the Friendly Statement after filling it in The sources of this article are the different laws involved, and the information provided by insurance companies.Mariano Zunino Siri is a lawyer registered in Tenerife Bar Association since 1991. Office in Los Cristianos at Edificio Valdes Center Torre “A”, oficina 1, piso 2º. Phone: 922 79 44 12.

Letters to Mariano I have received a photograph of my car with a fine for exceeding the speed limit. I was not driving it that day. Is that legal? This is legal. If you were not driving, you would not be responsible for the fine. You can do the proper allegations, stating that you were not the driver. But there is an obligation to “identify” the driver. If you do not do that, you can be fined through the lack of identification. As it is your vehicle, you are supposed to have control of it all the time, even when someone else is driving it. Do not forget to ask for legal advice (especially if your insurance company covers legal aid).

Wrought-iron furniture has just the right mettle ONE of the most common problems for rental complexes is the durability of furniture, and the time invested in cleaning and maintaining properties. After all, time is money for management companies, and downtime must be kept to a minimum - not only for them, but for the owners of the properties as well. One of our clients, the Pueblo Torviscas complex, is, understandably, very popular because of its fabulous location, near some of the best beaches in Tenerife. So it is not surprising that there’s a very high occupancy and turn-around (ie multi-

ple changeovers). Many of the clients are families, often with young children, and this type of client, together with the close proximity to the beach, means that furniture is often subjected to heavy usage, including sun cream and sand! The furniture must obviously be strong enough to withstand constant usage, and also be produced within the available budget. Wrought-iron furniture is sometimes an option that people do not consider because they see it as a bit old fashioned, and it often tends to be associated with ornate designs. However, this need not be the case, as many modern versions are now available. And, as a material, it does

have many advantages. The individual items are immensely strong and, in the example shown in the photo, very easy to keep clean, particularly as the design is modern, with straight, clean lines. The frames can be cleaned by wiping down with a mild soap solution, and the cush-

Page 38

ion covers are all removable for washing. As part of the annual maintenance programme, the frames can be repainted if necessary. In this example, the tiles on the table top have been coordinated with the kitchen tiles, which ties the whole scheme together. The sofa bed in this case is

also interesting. The base of this sofa is a sprung mattress, and by just removing the back cushions, is a proper single bed: extremely comfortable and practical. The proportions of the sofa in relation to the depth of the base and the height have been carefully considered, so that it is surprisingly comfortable as a sofa, as well as a bed. In addition, both the mattress and the material used for the cushions and covers is fire-retardant (ignifugo in Spanish) and, therefore, meets all the legal requirements for rental complexes. Items in wrought iron can be made to order, so size, and even colour need not be an issue. This particular design has proved very popular and practical with both the management and the clients of Pueblo Torviscas. All items are available from Deco Nuevo, next to Ofipapel in Los Cristianos.

Feeling blue: A Get that garden acrobat gardening buzz again takes tumble... IT’S FUNNY how a series of, at times, unrelated actions leads to a discovery or end impact. Last weekend there was a large advert for Buddleja Buzz™.

THE BLUE TIT, perhaps the UK’s most iconic garden bird, is slipping away from bird feeders. The British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO’s) Garden Bird Feeding Survey (GBFS), which celebrated its Ruby Anniversary last winter, revealed a 42% decline of this species in gardens over the past 40 years. If there is one species that is synonymous with bird feeders, it is the Blue Tit. Colourful and acrobatic, the sight of a

Blue Tit foraging busily in a garden would be a thing of wonder were it not for its apparent ubiquity. But ubiquitous it is not, falling from an average weekly count of 5.3 individuals per GBFS garden in the winter of 1970/71 to 3.1 individuals last winter. It is not alone; 40 years of the GBFS bear out longestablished, precipitous declines in Starlings and Song Thrushes (both down by 75%), and in House Sparrows (down by 70%). After a meteoric rise in the first 30 years of the survey, numbers of Collared Doves have also fallen, down by more than a quarter in the past 10 years. However, it is not all bad news. Fuelled by seed and sunflower hearts, Goldfinch

17 September 2010 - 23 September 2010

numbers have multiplied more than 25 times over in the past 20 years, while Long-tailed Tits have exhibited a tenfold increase in GBFS gardens. Four times as many Great Spotted Woodpeckers now dart into GBFS gardens than at the start of the survey, hammering and probing their bills into a wide variety of foods. Tim Harrison, BTO Garden BirdWatch Development Officer, commented “The GBFS reveals that Blue Tits are declining in gardens, while other BTO surveys hint at a downturn in their population at large. In gardens, changes in bird feeding could be responsible; where once the supple dexterity of the Blue Tit would have been

king – feeding on monkey nuts threaded on string, peanuts in a mesh feeder, coconut shells stuffed with fat – modern foods and feeders mean that Blue Tits face stiff competition from other species.” David Glue, BTO Research Ecologist, added “Forty years of the GBFS has provided a fantastic resource. It is the longest running survey of its kind in the world and has only been made possible through the dedicated observations of hundreds of UK householders who participate voluntarily. With urbanisation and the development of new bird care products continuing apace, the importance of the GBFS will continue to grow.”

Basically this year specialist at Thompson & Morgan have received a grower of the year award for this plant, what is it you ask? Well it’s the first Buddleja that has been specifically bred to be a dwarf variety. Ideal for growing in patio pots and containers, Buddleja ‘Buzz’™ is quite unlike traditional buddleja plants, that have a reputation for growing too tall and becoming unruly. I used to have one in my garden, it was gorgeous and wildlife loved it but it just grew too quickly and overtook the whole plot. According to Thompson & Morgan, “with its compact nature, Buddleja ‘Buzz’™ still boasts all the qualities its larger cousins are famous for, such as the huge sprays of pretty flowers that are known for attracting butterflies and

wildlife into the garden. The compact plants will be smothered in flowers all summer long and will grow to just three feet (one metre) high. Plant breeder Mr Valin commented, ‘Buddlejas can grow so fast and have a bit of a reputation for taking over the garden, so we really wanted to create something that lets people grow these great plants, but on a smaller scale.” So, I looked for a bit more info on their website, but as I was doing this I stumbled on a piece of information which made me contact the specialists to confirm. If you live here in the Canaries you can order seeds on-line and they will post them to you – how brilliant. The helpful girl in the UK to whom I spoke said that it takes about three weeks from order to delivery, but still it’s worth the wait. Unfortunately it doesn’t apply to plants, plug plants etc but us gardeners can’t have everything can we. If any of you have used this service I would love to hear from you to see how you got on.

Got to get it right! Fighting belly bulge FOLLOWING on from last week’s column (Celebs who get it wrong), I am concentrating this week on those who always get it right.

cute, petite face is well suited to this Agyness Deyn-inspired crop. Yes, it's short, but versatile, too, she can lower the fringe to give herself some softness, dependant on her dress. Some could say short isn’t feminine, how could any-

Look at what they do, what their hair does for their face, eyes, skin tone, etc. You’ll see that what they do get right doesn’t take hours of styling just a good cut and colour. And that’s more or less the crucial factor: matching what works for you with what you have to work with. Don’t try to go against what you have, but use your faults and defects to ensure that what you do see is a style that really works for you. one say that about this style? Her oval face would suit any style, and the colour really goes well with her blue eyes. Dannii Minogue: A real hair star. She’s like hair royalty. She always gets it right, from just simple slicked-back to hair-ups and even wigs. Dannii is a hair chameleon, never afraid of experimenting, and I only wish there were more women like

Pixie Lott: Whether it’s up or down, she always looks great. From mere sexy and chic, to other times edgy and rock chick. Her colour is blonde, but not overly done. Her choppy layers give her lots of scope to create different styles, while her length gives her youthful face a sexy approach. 10 out of 10. Kim Wyatt: Ice Princess. Her

she’s blue-eyed. The darker colours complement her skin tone, and on her face shape (oval), she can more or less get away with anything.

Dita Von Teese: Naturally a blonde, but she works this darker colour so well. Normally, I’d say if that you’re naturally light, don’t for go for dark shades. But she does this shade proud. I’m sure it’s the make-up which, for some, could be too much. She always makes a statement and though it’s not a look for everyone, it just goes to show that she’s proud to stand out in a crowd. So if you’re undecided on your look, or what works for you, then consult a professional stylist. We’ve even been known to give advice on nonhairdressing matters, and that’s why we are called stylists! Trust your hairdressers, and their years of training. Let them guide you and advise you as to what really works for you. Work as a team and feed off each other, because that’s what makes for a good relationship between stylist and client.

Q. What is the best way to get rid of the belly bulge? I have back trouble and neck problems. Carol A. As everyone is different Carol, I cannot be specific without seeing you. Getting rid of the belly bulge is all about diet and cardio, rather than strength-training exercises that target the abdominals. This is because belly bulge results from excess body fat and not lack of muscle. The best way to reduce the bulge is, therefore, to reduce your body fat, and we all know what that requires: diet and exercise. Make a food diary for a week and see if there is anything you can cut out. It is possible to carry extra water weight in your tummy. To get rid of this, try cutting your sodium intake to 1,500mg a day and increasing your water intake. This will help you reduce water retention. But really, it comes down to healthy eating and consistent cardio workouts. Try brisk walking for 20-30 minutes every day, and also interval walking. Walk fast for three minutes, then recover for two at a slower pace, building up your stamina and fitness levels. Just keep at it and be patient. Q: My thighs have always been bigger than my hips. My arms are skinny and my stomach is flat. When I do leg exercises, my thighs get even bigger and my pants get tighter around the thighs. My diet is right on target. Any ideas? A: This is a common issue when doing weight training. Have you ever heard guys in

the gym say they want to get a good “pump”? After a workout, the muscles you worked will swell as a result of fluid accumulation. This will occur almost immediately after exercise, which is why I never do a leg workout when I want to get into my skinny jeans on Saturday night! The swelling will gradually subside over the next several days. But don't fret. As long as you are not eating more calories than you are burning in a day, you will not gain muscle mass or accumulate fat. And, as you continue to lose weight, your legs WILL get smaller; it just takes time. Q: Help! I can’t control myself when I start eating! How can I limit my portions? A: You’re not alone. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people struggle with portion-control many times throughout the day. I know that doesn’t make you feel better. But because it is such a common problem, there are some strategies you can adopt to help control your portions.

Focus on eating more slowly to give yourself time to tune in to your body’s hunger and satiety. It takes 20 minutes to half-an-hour for your brain to receive the message that your stomach is full, so take your time. What’s the rush? When you no longer feel hungry but still want to eat, think about why. Are you bored? Find something else to keep you busy. Are you upset? Call a friend and vent. Are you stressed or anxious? Turn on some music, go for a brisk walk or relax and destress. Don’t try to fix your problems with food. Keep your portions down by following these basic tips: • Use a smaller plate. As simple as this sounds, it works. Studies have shown that people eat more when there’s more on their plate, regardless of how hungry they feel. So put less on your plate, but trick your eyes into thinking you’re eating more by using a smaller plate. • Never eat directly from a container, bag, or box. It’s so hard to keep track of how much you’re eating when you are just reaching in and stuffing food in your mouth. Before you know it, the bag is gone. Instead, serve yourself one portion on a plate or in a bowl, put away the rest, and only then sit down to eat. • Measure, measure, measure! Keep that measuring cup or spoon handy, and measure out your cereal into a bowl, your rice on to your plate, your tuna salad, your steak, your strawberries - everything. Alzheimer’s... this could be the big breakthrough THE most incredible advance appears to have been made in the battle against Alzheimer’s Disease in the elderly, Research by British scientists demonstrated that large doses of vitamin B could halve the rate of brain shrinkage - a physical symptom associated with memory loss and dementia in old folk. The effects were so dramatic that the scientists felt it could revolutionise the treatment to slow, and even halt, the devastating march of the disease. Brain shrinkage, or atrophy, is a natural part of ageing. But it is known to be accelerated in people with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) - a kind of memory loss and forgetfulness - and Alzheimer’s. The University of Oxford scientists conducted a trial on 168 people. They found that the 50% who took high doses of three vitamin B supplements daily, had reduced their brain shrinkage associated with dementia by up to 53%. So strong were the results that scientists believed the tablets could even be prescribed to everyone with MCI half of whom develop Alzheimer’s. This memory loss affects 16% of the over-70s, which amounts to more than 1.5 million people in the UK. An optimistic Professor David Smith, the pharmacologist who co-authored the study, said the results were “immensely promising”. He added: “It is a very simple solution. You give someone some vitamins and you protect the brain. This is the first trial that has shown a glimmer of hope and success. “It is the first one of its kind

that has worked so clearly. I think it will change the whole direction of Alzheimer’s research. “There are 500 people a day who develop Alzheimer’s in the UK. If we can cut that down by just 10%, it will have a big impact, and I personally believe it will.” The research, published in the journal Public Library of Science ONE, is controversial because it defies current scientific dogma about the way to tackle Alzheimer’s. It suggests that simply taking vitamins can achieve results which have so far evaded pharmaceutical companies, despite millions of pounds being spent on experimental dementia drugs. The brain naturally shrinks in volume as we get older, and when you get to 60, it is shrinking by as much as 0.5% a year. But in those people with MCI, it accelerates to 1% a year and, in Alzheimer’s disease, by 2.5% annually. This is accompanied by severe memory problems, slower thoughts and confusion. Current research is aimed at tackling so-called tangles in the brain, which are thought to “silt up” its thought processes. The University of Oxford team set out in a new direction, targeting the abnormal physical shrinkage of the brain. They knew that a substance called homocysteine, an amino acid found in the blood, was associated with this shrinkage. Elderly people with higher levels of homocysteine, had higher levels of brain shrinkage. They also knew that vitamin B regulated levels of homocysteine, and that the more vitamin B in the blood, the lower the levels of the harmful amino acid. The scientists used an advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique to

17 September 2010 - 23 September 2010

study brain shrinkage in 168 volunteers aged 70-plus with diagnosed MCI. Over a period of two years, half were given a daily tablet containing high doses of the B vitamins folic acid, B6 and B12. The rest received a “dummy” placebo pill with no active ingredients. At the end of the trial, the effects of the vitamin treatment were found to be dramatic, and most pronounced in participants who started out with the highest rates of brain shrinkage. On average, taking B vitamins slowed the rate of brain atrophy by 30% and, in many cases, reductions were as high as 53%. Prof Smith said: “This is a striking, dramatic result. It’s much more than we could have predicted. “It is our hope that this simple and safe treatment will delay the development of Alzheimer’s in many people who suffer from mild memory problems.” The scientists stress that the doses of B vitamins used in the trial are much higher than would be obtained from diets and additives, or normal health supplements. The “TrioBe Plus” pills, prescribed under medical supervision in Sweden but not available in the UK, contain around 300 times the recommended daily intake of B12. However, it is possible to copy the dose by buying three separate supplements from health food shops in Britain for as little as 10 pence a day. While Prof Smith said anybody considering taking them should consult his doctor first, he felt they would be effective. “These are big doses,” he stressed. “Should we take it? The person would have to be worried about his memory, and even then I would recommend

going to the doctor first. But if I had MCI, I would take it.” Professor Helga Refsum, his co-author at the University of Oslo, said the evidence was strong. “As a scientist, I am not happy with just one trial, and there will be a large debate,” she said. “But as a clinician sitting in front of a patient, I would say vitamin B supplements are fairly safe and inexpensive. What we have found here is extremely convincing.”

City restaurant’s a Ramsay favourite A BRISTOL restaurant has been bombarded with calls after celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay named it his favourite Italian eaterie on his new TV show. Michelin-starred Casamia in Westbury-on-Trym received more than 13,000 hits on its website in two hours following the screening of Ramsay’s Best Restaurant on Channel 4 – four times as many as in the previous three months. Casamia’s head chefs and brothers Jonray and Peter Sanchez-Iglesias – who at 26 and 24 are the youngest Michelin-starred chefs in the country – impressed Ramsay. The restaurant featured on Tuesday night’s programme after being selected from more than 12,000 nominations. In the show Casamia beat the London-based traditional Sicilian restaurant Mennula after a three-round heat that saw them cater for a coach-load of hungry customers in two hours, meet the demands of secret diners and compete in a cookoff in Ramsay’s London restaurant. Casamia will now compete against other cuisines, from French to Indian, for a place in the final.

Page 42

Guy Winter, who handles Casamia’s accounts and has known the brothers for 10 years, said the phone had

been ringing off the hook from interested customers. He said: “By midnight on Tuesday we had 16,000 hits on the website, when we had about 3,000 a month over the last three months. When I checked at 2.30am yesterday we were getting 10 hits every 30 seconds. The phone has been ringing nonstop with people wanting to book since the programme went out, and our weekends are booked up until the end

of September.” Mr Winter said Jonray and Peter had been delighted to work with Ramsay, and that it had been fantastic to meet the badtempered chef. “Gordon came down when we catered for the 30 diners and was in the kitchen with them to keep an eye on what was happening,” said Mr Winter. “He asked a lot of questions about flavours and was giving advice on how to run the front of house as well.” Casamia opened in 1999 and is the only Michelinstarred restaurant in Bristol, being named in the guide two years running. Horoscopes of the week You don’t seem to want to do anything anyone asks because a rebellious mood has befallen you and you must be careful that you don’t let yourself down in company. You must know it will mean a lot to your future. The home should be the setting for some very pleasing news midweek. LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd) It’s time to call it quits regarding the feud that has been going on with a colleague or work contact of some sort. If you don’t, you are going to find that your work becomes affected, especially since the coming weeks are set to require a more intimate working environment for all concerned. Don’t blow the chance of that rise which has been hinted at. SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd) Make this the week you stop fighting over issues you know are not nearly as important as you are making out. A little more time and energy spent on your work would offer you far more rewards that are certain to be much more beneficial to everyone’s life and pocket! It will also make your inner self feel that more relaxed, so be positive. SAGITTARIUS (November 23rdDecember 21st) It is important that you use the coming weeks to make a plan for the rest of the year so that you can fit in everything the stars are going to be offering. The most important thing is that you get your finances in order. You know this coming up is a more expensive few weeks than usual for you, but one that can definitely benefit your long-term future.

C A P R I C O R N (December 22ndJanuary 20th) Careful how many invites you are giving to people around you. You are craving attention, but close friends and colleagues are unlikely to welcome all of this new interest you are creating. You may be best to talk to those closest to you, first and to reach some sort of a compromise to suit you both. AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)You really are growing in confidence more and more every day, but you must be careful not to attract too many false friends as this new air of success takes onlookers by both surprise and pleasure. Be prepared to have to pay for Gemini’s company and information. PISCES (February 20th-March 20th) Beware of discussing the problems you are having with people you work with. There has to be some sort of a line drawn, or you will never be able to separate the two. A chance to sort out your biggest worry comes with a surprise phone call which will arrive at the beginning of the week. ARIES (March 21stApril 20th) Soon, you will be going to some rather extreme lengths in order to let a certain person know how very impressed you are with his/her fun

and attractive personality. Try to play it a little cool, though, and leave at least a little something to the imagination. And don’t ignore you daily chores, whether at home or work. TAURUS (April 21stMay 21st) You should start to feel far more secure in all areas of your life. You never like the feeling that anything is temporary and that is probably why you were acting so strangely. You can however now rest assured that what you want could be yours, so just a little more patience you are almost there! GEMINI (May 22ndJune 21st) Don’t go through others to let someone know how you are feeling, Gemini. You of all signs should know how little attention is paid to rumours. With the extra funds the stars are forecasting for you, why not plan something extra special to show them personally? CANCER (June 22ndJuly 23rd) Your emotions are working overtime and you must be careful that you are not placing unfair pressures on your loved ones. Write a list of what is worrying you and deal with it from an outsider’s view; you will soon see the answers are far simpler than you first thought. That should put a smile on your face for a change. LEO (July 24thAugust 23rd) Family or friends from far away should be getting in contact, and you may even find yourself having to arrange a trip of some sort so that you can join someone on his/her special day or occasion. Younger Leos will do a fine job of leading you astray if you’re willing, especially this weekend.

Holiday Blues? Maybe it’s time to quit EMPLOYERS are seeing a flood of resignations as a bad case of holiday blues kicks in among the workforce, a new study claims. Some 37% of the year’s total resignations are expected to come this week alone - more than at any other time of the year, according to recruitment company Resource on Demand. The research showed that while many career changes are triggered by the key holiday periods, it takes candidates on average four weeks to job hunt and attend interviews, then a further four weeks to work through their notice period. This means the majority of post-summer quitters will not start their new roles until the beginning of November. Lee Durrant, managing direc-

market will begin.” The findings follow a July study by the Institute of Leadership and Management which revealed that 40% of workers do not return from their holidays feeling more relaxed than before they left. Mr Durrant added: “It is incredible that over half of all new jobs are triggered by the two key holiday seasons, but in many ways it is also unsurprising. “The time away from our desks helps us to consider our options and evaluate our careers.”

ON THE ROAD WITH JAV Behind the Wheel Email: Jav@canarianweekly.com

Starry-eyed over Astra! NEVER mind Paris in the springtime, here’s a real eyeful for next month’s renowned motor show in the French capital. You will not be able to stop ogling the Astra, which is sporting a new look in the shape of the GTC Paris. It is actually a thinly-disguised concept, showing how the rakish new, three-door Vauxhall will shape up. This model has been styled to preview the high-octane VXR version. But strip away the twin tailpipes and the enormous, 21-inch forged wheels, and you have the production-spec Astra threedoor.

The flowing shape takes its lead from two models: the elegant five-door Astra and handsome Insignia. And with it, Vauxhall aim to overshadow the more conservative VW Golf and Ford Focus. The ultra-slim headlights are topped off by LED ‘eyebrows’ which dominate the front

end, while a sharp centre line runs the length of the bonnet and leads to a low grille. Curved ‘blades’ in the door panels create a dynamic profile, as do the sharp creases running from the door handles to the tail-light clusters. These features work together to give the GTC a

honed, narrow look at the front and a purposeful, broad-shouldered stance at the rear. At 4.46 metres long, the stylish concept offers space for five people, yet still maintains compact and sporty proportions. The GTC Paris features a four-cylinder, 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, with direct injection. This is allied to a sixspeed, manual gearbox, and incorporates stop/start. The layout is a hint to the powertrain of the next Astra VXR because the unit is likely to deliver in excess of 300bhp as Vauxhall chase arch-rival Ford’s Focus RS. Lesser variants will get the same range of engines as the five-door, which means the

1.4-litre turbo and naturallyaspirated 1.6 petrols will be joined by a 2.0-litre diesel, as well as a super-efficient 1.7litre ecoFLEX oil-burner. This spectacular VXR won’t be the only performance version to be offered, though. A 210bhp 1.6-litre turbo SRi is designed to take on the VW Golf GTI. The GTC also has a revised chassis and widened track, which provide more clues to the VXR’s spec. An electronic, limited-slip differential features, as does Vauxhall’s FlexRide adaptive damping system. The latter alters the throttle, steering and suspension responses to suit drivers’ tastes. To cope with the huge power output, and prevent

torque steer, the flagship is expected to use the HyPerStrut front suspension layout from the Insignia VXR. But the interior will remain secret until the wraps come off the GTC at Paris, although a peep through the concept’s windows reveals the wingbacked bucket seats which will feature in the VXR. The rest of the design will be similar to that of the fivedoor, with a high-quality finish, plus special branding. The Astra VXR arrives in the UK late next year, at the same time as the three-door, and Vauxhall followers are certain to be queuing around the block for at least a test drive. Astra is the Latin word for star, and it fits this new model to perfection.

These ‘cheap’ SEATS provide great comfort SPANISH car-maker SEAT are aiming to provide a cut-price alternative to established premium-brand rivals with their new Exeo. This solid-build machine, priced from £19,495£23,275, certainly doesn’t feel a bargain-basement offering. But if the Exeo looks a little familiar, then it won’t surprise you to learn that beyond the company badges, it is essentially a last-generation Audi A4. A sharp new nose and revised rear-end help to freshen the looks, but there’s no disguising the design’s age. As with the German original, buyers can choose from a four-door saloon or a practical estate called the Sport Tourer. There are four trim levels to pick from: S, SE, Sport and Lux, and all get alloy wheels and sporty, twinexit exhausts. Like the exterior, the SEAT’s cabin will be familiar to owners of the old A4. There are restyled faces for the instruments, a new steering wheel and seats. Otherwise, the well-built interior is identical to the Audi, which leaves the space a

little tight for passengers at the back. All versions have Bluetooth phone connection and airconditioning, while the rangetopping SE Lux adds xenon headlamps. Okay, so the SEAT is a little familiar on the outside, but its engines are totally modern. All the units come from parent firm VW and include the new 2.0-litre common-rail diesel (in 118, 141 and 168bhp tune), and a smooth and punchy 197bhp 2.0-litre petrol from the MkV Golf GTI. On the move, the similarities between the Exeo and previous generation are obvious, which is a good thing, thanks to direct steering, strong grip and good body control. Sport models get a lowered and stiffened suspension setup for sharper responses, although the firm ride can feel a little harsh over big

17 September 2010 - 23 September 2010

bumps. The diesel engines are the most eco-friendly, emitting between 139 and 153g/km. Favourite is the 2.0litre TSI petrol, and this figure leaps to 179g/km.

No Rayo hope for Tenerife Rayo Vallecano 1 CD Tenerife 0 THE Spanish TV commentator summed it up best, seconds after Juli has given Rayo the winning goal three minutes from time. “Malo, malo, malo, malo, malo …” he blasted out for what seemed like eternity. Even my mates who speak as much Spanish as a duck understood what he was on about. Bad. Bad. Bad. As Rayo’s players and fans celebrated, my mind went to the stadium in the outskirts of Madrid. I thought of those poor Tenerife fans who had made the long journey, only to be thanked with another insipid performance. This was the worst of a poor bunch of displays. Leading up to the match, the media were shown a team in unity. All the players were behind the manager Arconada. They were playing for the shirt. Well … The home side bossed the

match from the first whistle to the last. Tenerife never had a sniff and, apart from some poor finishing and good keeping from Aragoneses, it could have been worse. The fact that Tenerife seemed delighted they were going to get a point before shipping the late goal spoke volumes. As I wrote in the column last week, the recent Tenerife side have shown so much that we, the fans, will not stomach a return to the dark old days. The squad is mainly the same it’s just the manager who is different. I’m not the only one asking for a change at the helm. My Spanish paper cousins are doing a fine job on that front. So much so that this week, Arconada got the dreaded vote of confidence from Santiago Llorente, the director

who brought him to Santa Cruz. “We are convinced he will reverse this situation,” said Llorente. “It is true we are concerned with the results but we have confidence in him, his staff and the players. “We want to show Arconada we have confidence in him, and to try to lift everyone’s head. With the fans help and support, we will overcome and reverse this situation. We must be united as a team.” Strong words. But Llorente has to be strong. It was he who pushed for Arconada to replace the popular Jose Luis Oltra. So by rights, if the manager goes, his position as director of football is up in the air. Especially if Oltra returns! That’s for another day, but if Tenerife lose to Celta Vigo on Saturday, the manager will

surely be toast. The match kicks off at 5pm in Santa Cruz, and Oasis Fm have exclusively live commentary. The visitors are always a tough nut to crack. Only a few years ago, they were in the Champions League and their fall from grace has been spectacular. Leeds-esque, if you have a minute. They have steadied the ship off the field over the last two

seasons and, though they would take a top-eight place now if offered, they could end up with something a lot grander. They have started well enough. Recent wins over Numancia and Cordoba show the side are gelling. Paco Herrera has brought in some solid signings, including former Las Palmas midfielder Robert Trashorras and ex-Chelsea star

Enrique de Lucas. In fact, de Lucas has been quite a revelation. He now plays in the hole behind main striker David Rodriguez, and the two have already found an understanding. He notched against Numancia and created both Rodriguez goals last weekend. They are a sturdy side who will give Tenerife plenty of problems, especially from corners, which are still Tenerife’s Achilles heel. But they are not the best of travellers. No side have lost their first four games and been promoted from the Second Division, so Tenerife must raise their game. And the players have been sounding bullish this week. “On paper we are the favourites, but we have not been playing well,” admits Natalio. “But, we can only improve! We know our position looks delicate and we must play more as a team. But we believe we can win. “The fans deserve a victory, and we will work hard to get one.”

FOOTBALL PLAYERS born 1999 or 2000 (alevin) urgently needed for C.D. Vilaflor to complete team. Training nights Tue & Thu at 6pm at Vilaflor football pitch. Please call 637 819 680.

T HAS taken seven attempts, but Legends A have a notch in the win column in Divison One. The Los Cristianos chaps turned the formbook on its head as they beat last season’s cup-winners Nauta A 73. They have moved above Bar La Cana, who slid to the bottom after another defeat, this time 9-1 at Men of Atlantis.

Palms Bar A stay top after a comfortable 8-2 win at Target Bar, whose Antonio had a “happy finish” to the evening. Summerland Superstars also retain a 100% record following their 9-1 win at former hosts 8 Ball Massive. Tenerife Hammers A are still on the pace after beating Terrace A 8-2, Trap Door did Bar 180 A by the same scoreline, and Rat Pack snuck past Summerland Allstars 6-4.

NAUTA is the Latin word for a sailor, but we’d best skip over that! It is also an historical region in Peru. If you are about my age (26!), you will recall a cartoon character called Paddington Bear, who came from darkest Peru and ate only marmalade sandwiches. But there was nothing jammy about the Nauta Bar’s win over Strikers; indeed, they conserved their top spot with a thumping 7-1 scoreline. Mitch spread his talent over the visitors with a 180, and boss man Ian said: “I can’t believe it’s not better,” as he

allowed Chuckling Chimp to gain the only point for Strikers. Target A moved up one place to fourth after a demolition job on Ensecan, a few missed chances costing the Toscales outfit dearly. Rood A were 4-1 down after the singles against the Phoenix, but then took both doubles to earn a chance of a draw. But it was not to be as Bubbles, Ashley and Steve served up a 21-dart trebles leg, with a 106 finish from the big fellow. There were some thumping wins in Division Two, none more so than Bar Tasca’s excellent 9-1er at Woodys. Tasca have charged up to third place and are on a roll. Bar 180 C bounced back with a stunning 8-2 success over Gaffers, and Tenerife Hammers C did the same to

Toscales Tangos. Leaders Legends B were given a scare at Barracuda Bandits before edging home 6-4,

and Summerland Elite needed the minimum margin to beat Phoenix Potters, despite Davey losing both

singles games - and bookie Paddy getting 7-balled by Trevor. “Trousers Down” Paddy!

DAVID PENNY Email: David.penny@canarianweekly.com

These Irish islands David Penny this week looks at the early Irish community, and its influence on the Canary Islands and beyond FROM the 17th Century, Spain in general, and the Canary Islands specifically, has played host to numerous Irish Catholic families, many of whom were forced to leave their own country after defeat in several wars. The first wave came to Spain, and the islands in1651 following the defeat of the Catholics by Oliver Cromwell, and as a result of the socalled Three Kingdoms Wars. These were a succession of conflicts between Scotland, Ireland and England, which included the English Civil War. Among this initial influx, we see in the islands for the first time, such names as Cologan, O’Daly, Walsh, Sall, Madan, and Cullen, and these surnames are around to this day. The final defeat of the Catholics by William of Orange came by the end of that century, and this event promoted a further wave of emigration. The families of O’Shanahan, White, Power, Maloney, Meade, Kelly and Murphy came to join their fellow countrymen. These Irish folk took up residence in Las Palmas, Santa Cruz, and Puerto Oratava, as well as in Santa Cruz de La Palma. They chose Spain and its islands as a new home because of common religious beliefs, and they were made more than welcome by their new hosts. Vast numbers of them served with distinction in the Spanish Military in mainland Europe, and especially in the Spanish Netherlands. They engaged mainly in maritime trade, dealing in wine and other produce, and were prominent in their business links with America. Over the years, they have left their mark on the society and culture of the islands and beyond. In 1773, Dionisio O’Daly, a businessman from La Palma

Page 48

(together with local lawyer Anselmo Perez Brito) successfully challenged the post of non-elected alderman for the island. It was the first occasion in Spanish history that a local

administration (Cueva de Carias) had been elected by universal suffrage, (free public elections) and paved the way to the later emergence of a democratic state. Prior to this, perpetual rulers

were the norm. Don Dionisio was also responsible, in 1797, for the opening of the first state-sponsored school in the Canaries. Born in 1744 to Patrick Murphy y Kelly and Joanna

Meade y Sall, in Puerto de la Cruz, Jose Murphy y Meade was another prominent figure in the politics of the day. He was a Santa Cruz merchant, fluent in Spanish, French and English, who

developed major commercial activities overseas. Jose Murphy was instrumental in obtaining dominant city status for Santa Cruz, which until this time had purely been seen as the port facility to La Laguna, the former island capital. In 1806, he was elected to the city council and served a number of years in various governmental positions, including Minister of Health. Then, in 1823, he went into exile after the constitutional regime was overthrown. He ended his days in 1841 in Mexico, where he had served as Spain’s Consul General since 1837. Jose Murphy has a street named for him, as well as there being a statue of him in Santa Cruz. But possibly the greatest accolade is that there is a pub in that city, which bears his name. The composer Teobaldo Power, born in 1848 in Tenerife, is another notable descendent of the early Irish. He was a child prodigy who astounded intellectuals of his day. After completing his studies at the age of 18 in Barcelona and Paris, he developed his musical career in Cuba, Madrid, Lisbon, Madeira and Malaga before returning to the La Laguna town of Las Mercedes. Here, he composed Cantos Canarios , a mixture of Canarian airs set to a classical theme, before dying of tuberculosis aged 36. His Arrorro has become the official anthem of the Canary Islands and in Santa Cruz, he has a street, a secondary school and a concert hall named after him. But sadly, as yet, no pub! Another dignitary of Irish decent is the diplomat Bernado Cologan y Cologan, who was born in Puerto de la Cruz in 1847. He was attached to the Spanish Consular Service and was Ambassador to Peking in 1900, at the time of the Boxer rebellion (the assaults on the various legations foreign missions - being the subject of the 1963 film Fifty Five Days at Peking).
