Excellence will overcome crisis Quality counts - Cabildo asks for ‘effort’ to increase tourism quality.
FIRST Vice-President and Minister of Tourism of the Cabildo of Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, last week made an appeal to the business sector to “make best efforts” in order to maintain the quality of service of the destination despite the drop in profitability.
Also during the inaugural speech of the VI Congreso de Turismo de Tenerife he reiterated that the improvement is not just investment, but rather by the “culture detail”, while adding that the efforts, although begin to take the first positive data, “still not enough.” Although the figures given by the President of the Cabildo, Ricardo Melchior, showed some improvement in the sector, with data such as the recovery of more than 80,000 customers and

increased air capacity at 569,000 seats to the island, 11% more than in 2009, Bermúdez was quoted as saying, a more restrained: “The market and the competitors have no pity nor forgive the mistakes we make.” Melchior said that Tenerife is currently on a “tipping point” that “will lead to recovery” after noting the creation of 600,000 new airline seats this winter, which will involve a total of 1,200 aircraft landing in Tenerife airports compared to the
previous year. These signs of recovery are the result, according to the vice president of the Cabildo insular, that this crisis has forced us to do a real check on the foundations that underpin the island’s economy and tourism “while reminding employers and employees of the need to avoid “short-termism” of the situation. Nevertheless, Bermúdez recalled that the island has “all the conditions for success” with its large range of natural areas, theme parks, five star hotels and restaurants, among others. In this vein, the Congreso, titled Case Studies and best practices in tourism, awarding two businesses that have led to increased tourism on the island - the
president of Globalia, Juan Jose Hidalgo, Air Europa and TravelPlan, and the owner of the Expo-Group, Antonio Mestre, creator of one of the first five-star resorts in the South. These awards were joined by a special tribute to the eleven centers of the island tourism initiatives for contributing “historic and ongoing.” Excessive bureaucracy During his brief speech after receiving the award, Hidalgo lamented about the excessive bureaucracy that exists today, in his opinion, must be removed to facilitate the departure of the economic crisis. The Globalia President said that in a situation where private enterprise has had a hard time it’s necessary to
“pave” the bureaucracy, adding that it must be more “practical.” Hidalgo, also expressed his disagreement with the bureaucracy that results in the fact that four administrations, sometimes contradict each other. The VI edition of this congreso also featured presentations by Tenerife Tourism manager, Alberto Bernabé, who presented management of tourism on the island, while the director of Design Innovation, Carmelo di Bartolo , addressed the current market trends. The meeting was closed with four short presentations aimed to publicise success stories in the sector and encourage excellence as an element to overcome the crisis.

Strike? It was more of a general failure! SPAIN’S first General Strike in eight years, staged on Wednesday, appeared to have made little impact in the south of Tenerife. And while on the mainland, pickets clashed with police, airlines cancelled flights and commuters battled transport chaos, many strikers here took the opportunity to top up their suntans on the beach, rather than join the street protesters. In fact, the strike turned out to be a damp squib for those who anticipated a more forceful protest here. One café-bar owner on the Playa de Las Americas beach front, said: “It’s the busiest I’ve seen it on the beach here for at least three months.”
Workers were called out on strike by union leaders after the consistent break down of lengthy talks with socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero’s government regarding its tough labour reforms, spending cuts and raising of the pension age to 67. Apart from the San Miguel area, which was celebrating its annual fiesta and virtually closed down en masse, everywhere else appeared almost normal, although buses did not run. A handful of businesses closed in support of the strike against austerity measures, sporting “cerrado por Huelga” signs on their businesses. Yet tens of thousands of dissenters took to the streets in major Spanish cities in the evening, especially Madrid, protesting over
the government’s measures, which are aimed at slashing unemployment now approaching 20% - and reviving the battered economy. Claims by unions that the action was fully supported by its members and co-workers appeared to be unfounded, despite them quoting large percentages. Many forms of transport carried “minimum services” signs and some flights were cancelled. To be fair, it was heavier going in the Tenerife capital of Santa Cruz, which had an exclusion zone around its centre, the home of many government buildings and the British Consulate. Thousands of protesters adorned the streets, a sea of red resembling the throng of a football crowd. Neither Spain’s unions nor the government can claim
victory from a General Strike that drew limited support, but enough for both to save face, Spanish newspapers said Thursday. “There was a strike, but it was not general,” said the Catalan paper La Vanguardia. “And maybe, that is just what both the unions and the government wanted: a symmetric failure, but bearable.” That opinion was shared by the conservative daily ABC, which said: “The strike was a drawn match between the government and the unions. Services functioned, industry was paralysed and life continued.” The centre-left daily El Pais said the strike had a “limited impact”, but the newspaper avoided labelling it a failure. “The unions saved face, without inflicting a defeat on the government, as was the case in 1998 against
Felipe Gonzalez, or in 2002 against Jose Maria Aznar,” it said, referring to the former socialist and conservative prime ministers. “Both the unions and the government wanted a drawn match, which was demonstrated by the strike, as neither one and the other had any alternative. The unions know that the alternative to Zapatero is still worse. “And, from his side, Zapatero needs to reconnect with the unions, which compose part of his popular base that has propelled it into government.” The centre-right daily El Mundo, however, called the stoppage a “general failure”. It added: “The unions
British Consular staff are trained to handle a crisis A JOINT initiative between the British Consulate-General and Madrid’s emergency services has provided the Foreign Office front-line staff with training on key aspects of being a Consular officer. Samur-Protección Civil are professionals in dealing with crisis situations and offer training regularly to the police and other organisations. But this is the first time there has ever been such an initiative with foreign Embassies – in this case, the British consular staff in the city. The British Consulate has always worked closely with the Spanish authorities, but decided to take this one stage further by collaborating with Madrid City Council emergency service to further enhance the team’s professional skills and experience. The courses were held in the British Embassy building and included embassy representatives of Australia, Canada, Germany,

emerged much weaker from this strike, as it has been shown, from everywhere, that only a small percentage of citizens heeded the strike call. The failure of the general strike makes an overhaul of Spanish unions more necessary.” The government said it had a “limited effect”, but unions reported a strong participation. Zapatero maintained a close relationship with the two unions after he first took office in 2004. But that turned sour when he entered his second term in 2008, and the economy slumped into recession as the once-booming property sector collapsed.
Ireland and the US. The British Council, which was also involved, work closely with Embassy staff during crisis situations. John Tomlinson, British Vice-Consul for central and north-west Spain, said: “Every day, hundreds of British citizens turn to the British consulates for assistance and advice. “And although our consular officers have all been trained by UK experts, spending time with the Spanish emergency services has helped us understand better their procedures, and how they deal with difficult situations.” Antonio Gavala, a Consular Officer in Madrid, who worked on organising the training, said: “No two days are the same in Consular work, and no two cases are the same. We never stop learning. The more training we get, the better, and the more we work with the professionals, the better.” Sr Pedro Luis Calvo Poch, Security and Transport Councillor of Madrid and the Head of SAMUR, visited the Embassy last Friday to praise the joint initiative. He also handed out diplomas to all who completed the training.

A WORD FROM OUR EDITOR
Royal Family are forced to tighten Bad timing their belts in 2011
Email: editor@canarianweekly.com
Pensions up, but the Government’s 2011 budget hits home
LAST WEDNESDAY I drove around a few of the main areas of the south to assess the impact of the General Strike – which, if i’m honest appeared to be minimal with many businesses of varying nationalities open as normal for trading. However the one overriding aspect which prevailed was the volume of rubbish piling up in the Basuras in the municipality of Arona. Now Arona is a sprawling area covering both coastal and country areas; each area however suffering from the same problem – hundreds of black, rotting bin bags with the odd purple scented bag thrown in for good measure, spilling onto pavements and paths with no discrimination between the tourist or residential areas.
Page 04
With every process if one aspect fails to work properly there is a knock on effect, in this case, vermin. Plus, the odd case of impromptu fire, reducing the mass of rubbish to ashes with the stench of smoke as opposed to rottenness. We covered the story some weeks ago in the Canarian Weekly that rubbish removal in Arona is run by a private contractor who allegedly has not paid his workers – i’m unable to get anyone to confirm this, or, perhaps more importantly ascertain how long this work to rule will continue. The irony of it all is that this week i have received two bills for basura, one being for when i didn’t even own the property! As they say in comedic circles – timing is everything! Do you think citizens of Arona are eligible for discount? Until next week...
THE Spanish Government will increase pensions by 3.6% next year, while at the same time reducing the amount set aside for the unemployed. And the Royal Family are facing up to the royal purse being trimmed for the first time ever as the financial clampdown begins to take effect. These were the main points of the State Budget, announced yesterday (Thursday) by Elena Salgado, Minister for Tax and the Economy. The pension fund goes up to 112.215 billion euros, although dependency spending will be reduced. Spending on pensions is frozen, but the number of pensioners will increase, while the fund for non-contributive pensions will be unchanged at 1.995 billion euros.
The fund used to cover the 19.3% jobless people will be trimmed by 1.6% to 30.474 billion euros, even though the Government believes the unemployment figure will get worse this year. Social spending amounts to 58% of the consolidated budget, while protection for families will be reduced by 8.9%, thanks to the ending of the famous baby cheque. Selgado described the budget for 2011 as “austere, restrictive and realistic”, but she claimed that growth of 1.3% was still possible. Spending on the state will be down by 7.9% and ministries’ budgets are down 15.6%. Biggest spending cuts will be seen in the Development, Environment and Housing Ministries. The Employment and Immigration department, which has the largest budget, will also be cut by 3.7% at 22.586 billion euros. There are cuts also in Education, Tourism and
Research and Development in the budget, which can be considered to be the most restrictive for 30 years, following two years of economic stress. The increase in IRPF income tax on high earners will affect 100,000 taxpayers next year, and changes to the SICAV legislation are intended to stop money being taken out of the country in the last three months of the year. The Spanish Royal Family will also feel the pinch because their budget goes down by 5.2% to 8.43 million euros. Yet that figure will be considered a bonus for the ruling family as the Zarzuela Palace had been expecting a 9% cut in spending. The Bank of Spain says the economy is likely to weaken in the third quarter, mentioning the end of the stimulus measures as the main cause. Also, the end of the car Scrappage Scheme earlier this year, and the modera-
tion in public investment, are seen as negative. The Bank considers that the moderation in the loss of jobs will continue, however. The Budget comes as ratings agency Moody’s has reduced its classification of Spanish debt because of the country’s slow recovery. The rating for the debt and the FROB bank restructuring fund has been reduced from the maximum AAA to Aa1, with a stable outlook. Worryingly. Moody’s believes that recovery in the building and estate agency industries will take several years. Opposition leader Mariano Rajoy said Wednesday’s General Strike represented the failure of the unions and the Government in Spain, and added that the legislature was already a year overdue. Spain needs an injection of confidence, he said, adding that it was evident the Government was not capable of giving it.

Artisanal sector moves into social networking It is an indispensable means for marketing and innovation promotion. " To enable this, the department has organized a comprehensive training programme that includes a series of basic knowledge of Internet services and social networks, email, workshops, Flickr, Youtube, Google Search and features how to create a blog, as well as other matters related to social networks and their risks, not to mention a final workshop on Facebook. Among the weaknesses raised by industry profession-
als include a very limited application of information technology and communication (ICT) knowledge. It’s key to apply technological innovation to the entire production process. Efrain Medina stressed that "in a globalized world, where Internet usage and social networking is widespread among the population, all professionals and businesses that have no physical presence in this virtual environment are at risk of being excluded from market. The use of email and social
networks like Facebook, electronic banking, digital signatures, etc. and operational concepts are essential in the modern world and the transactions between businesses and between businesses and their customers and suppliers. Craft is a productive sector of great importance for the island's economy in many areas both in the economic dimension, as in cultural and ethnographic, hence the Insular Plan of handicrafts including a series of actions until 2011, seeking improved competitiveness.

That’s the equivalent of 158 bags of sugar, which tells you all about the abnormal 31-year-old, originally from Columbia, who weighs in at an incredible 40-plus stone, having been four stone heavier. Doctors have warned that he will have to lose the 25 stone within 18 months if he is ever to lead a normal life. Even worse, they say his health is in serious danger, and that the excess weight one quarter of a ton - could soon kill him if he doesn’t hit the target. Yet Gustavo, though tubby as a child, did not start to suffer serious weight problems until he was 15. “Right now, I can’t work or do any activity, and I want to lose weight to be able to go back to working in the airport, where I used to work,” said Gustavo. He has another good reason for wanting to slim down. “I’ve got a girlfriend and I want to lead a normal life,” he added. Other members of his family are said to have similar problems, and his 19-year-old sister was scheduled to have a stomach by-pass yesterday (Thursday). As reported by the Cabildo de La Palma in a statement, its president, Guadalupe González Tano, recalled that it has been an "aspiration for some time proposed as a priority by the representatives of the tourism sector in La Palma. This connection opens the possibility to connect an important volume of tourists
who have chosen their destination as Tenerife South. " Tano Gonzalez also stressed that Tenerife is "one of the main airports in Spain and the Canaries" and therefore insisted on his "satisfaction at the agreement, we hope that the connection is very successful." For his part, the Island’s President, Miguel Concepcion, praised the "tenacity and effort of the Minister of Tourism to make this connection achievable, the merit of the president and the minister," he reiterated. He has also said he was "delighted" to set up this connection "at a difficult time, as La Palma has lost a significant share of tourism, but will recover," he predicted.

Merged mobile phone giant axes 1,200 Jobs The group behind newly-merged mobile phone giants Orange and T-Mobile has announced plans to axe around 1,200 jobs in the UK. It said it is cutting 7.5% of its 16,000 strong workforce to end duplicated roles following the tie-up between Orange and T-Mobile in the UK earlier this year. It said the majority of cuts would be made among back office, headquarter and management areas, but added it would retain dedicated marketing teams for both brands. The firm has launched a 90day consultation with staff and said the jobs were likely to go by the end of the year. The jobs blow comes after a three-month review of the business to identify areas where there is overlap under plans to save at least £3.5bn. The firm has already cut around 30 senior management roles after a shake-up of top-level staff in July. Tom Alexander, chief executive of Everything Everywhere, said: “We need

to ensure that we are operating with maximum efficiency, effectively serving our two brands while removing any unnecessary duplication from the business and, above all, making sure that we are set up to deliver for the future. “It is therefore regrettable that some roles will need to be removed from our combined business. We will, of course, be doing everything we possibly can to mitigate the personal impact on our people and support them through this process.” The firm - owned jointly by Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom - announced an 18.5% plunge in adjusted second-quarter operating profits this week in its first update since the UK’s third and
fourth biggest mobile networks merged. Mobile service revenues fell by 5.3m to a worse-thanexpected £1.6bn after a reduction in the fees operators can charge. It has more than 27 million customers in the UK and more than 720 retail stores. But the group stressed that despite cost-cutting plans, it aims to expand its retail presence. The group employs around 3,600 in its retail network. It also has around 7,500 people in its customer service operations across centres in Darlington, North Tyneside, Plymouth, Doxford in Sunderland, Greenock near Glasgow, and Merthyr Tydfil in Wales.

that the suspects lived in Mijas or Marbella. Their first robbery was on 16th April in Mijas, and then six days later they moved to the Alfaz del Pi, on the Costa Blanca. Other robberies followed in Calpe, Sabinillas, Cala del Moral, Fuengirola and Marbella. The Málaga police said the couple always worked together, the woman ringing the bell to gain entry to the bank, and then the man rushing in with the gun. A loaded pistol was recovered along with two wigs, a false beard and moustache and a bag containing the 9,000 euros taken in Torrox. The couple, who lived together in Marbella, were said to have stolen some 115,000 euros in the other 14 bank robberies.
Memorial service for Jack Bell ACK BELL, a well known and popular character locally, passed away at the age of 57 in August, and a memorial service will be held next Sunday (10th October). Jack lived in Costa del Silencio and, for the last seven years, in Los Abrigos, with his partner, Sue Wild. He helped with the delivery of the newspaper The Paper, worked in the Red Rock bar in Los Abrigos and for San Andreas car hire. He was also a regular at the Phoenix Bar. He was a very kind and considerate man, who would do any-

thing for anyone, and will be sadly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his 96-year-old mother, son Jack Jnr and brother, Geoff. Sue would like to thank all their friends for the support they have offered, and for the messages of condolences during this difficult time for her. As Jack was a massive Burnley FC fan, Sue says there is no need for anyone to wear black at the Los Abrigos service, to be held in the main plaza, from 5-9pm. She’d rather they wore the claret and blue of Burnley!

Brits facing jail over art scam BRITISH art lovers have been robbed of a fortune by three people who are said to have conned them into buying so-called works by promising painters, which never materialised. A Spanish woman and her British boyfriend, plus
another British woman, who will go on trial in Seville, are each facing a four-year jail sentence. They are said to have conned several collectors into forking out money, with the promise of large returns. But the paintings were never seen, and the trio kept saying they were being re-valued. Each investor was initially sent a certificate to show that he or she owned the
painting, and was promised that the art would be exhibited and then re-valued. The news agency EFE reported that one of the accused set up a company to sell art in 2000, and then launched a massive promotion to the British, selling the firm as a large and solvent operation. The prosecutor said the company attracted 770 clients, and that four of the
Britons defrauded lost a total of £37,577. The trio are also accused of dismantling the operation in 2003, leaving an unknown number of people out of pocket. The case will be heard over the next few months in Sevilla, with each of the accused facing jail, a 5,400euro fine and an obligation to return the money said to have been realised by the fraud.

What a week for Millibands DEPUTY leader Harriet Harman has paid tribute to David Miliband in her closing address to the Labour Party conference. Following a tumultuous week, during which the party has gained a new leader and lost a prominent front bencher, she said the former Foreign Secretary had been a “towering figure”. “I want to pay tribute to David Miliband who played a leading role in our years in government,” Ms Harman said.
“The Labour Party is proud of him - of what he did in government and it will be proud of what he does in the future too.” The deputy leader said it had been an “historic” conference. “It has been a rollercoaster of emotions. “It is disappointing to be in opposition, but we should be proud of our achievements in government. “We are sober about the challenges ahead, but fortified by energy and determination of our new leader Ed Miliband.” Ms Harman also used her speech to thank the party for

their “fantastic” support during her acting leadership. She joked: “I want to thank my husband, Jack Dromey, who lights up every room he enters. Though it’s often because the light is reflecting off his head.” She mistakenly said that she was the most “fanciable” MP in the pack and attributed her success to her husband using his Unite union block vote - a reference to the union support Ed Miliband received in his campaign for the leadership. :: New Labour MP Gloria de Piero is in fact the most “fanciable” woman.
Brain injury has turned boozer into Mr Perfect
A HEAVY DRINKER who was regularly verbally abusive has been transformed into a teetotal perfect husband after suffering a brain haemorrhage. Ken Merryweather used to go out on all-night drink binges before returning home to row with his longsuffering girlfriend Tracey. But the 44-year-old’s personality was completely transformed after he was struck down by the life threatening condition. The change was so striking that Tracey even agreed to marry him.”There was no way I would’ve married him before
but he has totally gone the other way,” she said. Ken, of Hadfield, Glossop, said that although the haemorrhage had caused him several problems, he was glad it had made him “a nicer guy to be around”. “I used to be so verbally abusive - especially after a few pints,” he said. “When I used to work I used to go straight to the pub and not get in until 2 to 3am in the morning.” He added: “There are things I can’t do now but there are other things I can I can cross-stitch and I do an awful lot of sewing and cooking.” Just hours before Ken was struck down by the brain injury, he had been drinking

heavily on one of his typical evenings out. The next morning Tracey, 47, found him collapsed on floor. He had stopped breathing and Tracey had to resuscitate him. Ken said: “I lost 50 to 70% of my memory, I had to learn to walk and talk again. “I asked if it was down to the alcohol and the doctors said no. It was basically just a time bomb ticking. “I don’t touch a drop now. Tracey says it’s turned me into a better person.” Tracey added: “They do say that out of those who survive from a haemorrhage, eight out of 10 relationships go down the pan because people change but I’ve always said that he couldn’t have got any worse.”

Beggars just Lloyds on receiving end swept away HUMAN RIGHTS campaigners have accused the Indian government of sweeping slum dwellers and beggars off Delhi’s streets in an effort to “beautify” the city. The eyes of the world are on Delhi as it gears up to host the Commonwealth Games and activists fear poor people are being forced to leave because they send out the wrong image. Shanty towns across the city have been razed to the ground. Some are deemed too close to venues while others have been demolished to make way for car parks and road improvement schemes. Shivani Chaudry from the Housing And Land Rights Network said: “Mega events like the Commonwealth Games act as powerful symbols for city’s vying for the global tag. “But to host these events cities require extensive stretches of land in prime locations. Clearing these causes significant displacement of poor communities.” Sri Ram lived with his family in a poor settlement which had stood on the banks of a canal near the Nehhru Stadium for over 35 years. Then suddenly the bulldozers were ordered in and in just a few hours hundreds of homes were reduced to rubble.
A multi-story car park now stands on the site. They want to first criminalise the poor people and them make them invisible. It’s very worrying that officials can think and talk like this. The residents say they were offered no alternative housing or compensation. Ram, a 46-year-old street vendor, said: “For us the Commonwealth Games mean nothing. They have destroyed our homes and livelihoods. “The bulldozers came in one day and we had no time to even salvage our belongings. They just attacked us and destroyed everything. “I will have to rebuild my life. We just want these games to be over so we can carry on with our lives.” India’s image has been tarnished by the state of the athletes’ accommodation. A United Nations report claims up to 400,000 people in Delhi have been forced from their homes in the last three years. Shivani Chaudry claimed: “These evictions are carried out under the guise of city beautification and urban renewal measures to create a ‘world class city’.” Chaudry also alleges senior Delhi officials are on record as saying “Indians are used to seeing beggars but Westerners are not”. He added: “They want to first criminalise the poor people and them make them invisible. It’s very worrying that officials can think and talk like this.”
LLOYDS BANKING Group has topped the bank complaints league so far this year with nearly 290,000 gripes, according to figures. The state-backed group’s companies prompted 288,717 complaints about issues like poor service, bad advice and charges over the past six months, the Financial Services Authority (FSA) said. Barclays and Santander were the next biggest offenders, with 250,667 and 244,978 complaints respectively. It is the first time the FSA has detailed the findings by firm. With more than 140 million bank accounts in the UK and billions of transactions a year, there will inevitably be instances when things go
wrong. State-controlled outfit Royal Bank of Scotland - whose businesses include RBS and NatWest - drew 142,688 complaints, while HSBC attracted 81,271. Altogether, bank and building society customers made a total of 1.25 million complaints, the FSA said - up 5% on the same period last year. Among the data published by the FSA was the proportion of complaints dealt with within eight weeks. Lloyds TSB secured a completion rate of 97% for customers, while Barclays dealt with 91% of cases within the period. Santander closed only 46% of complaints within eight weeks. Bank Complaints League: :: Lloyds Banking Group 288,717 complaints. :: Barclays - 250,667. :: Santander - 244,978.
:: Royal Bank of Scotland 142,688. :: HSBC - 81,271. :: Total - 1,250,000, The FSA is proposing changes to its complaints handling rules to help drive up standards. The proposals include making banks identify a senior manager responsible for handling complaints and creating remedies for common problems. Officials also want to stop banks sending letters which reject complaints but fail to explain that customers can challenge them and go to the Financial Ombudsman Service. The British Bankers’ Association said the complaint figures should be taken in context with the number of bank accounts. It said: “The larger the bank is the more complaints it is
statistically likely to receive and, with more than 140 million bank accounts in the UK and billions of transactions a year, there will inevitably be instances when things go wrong.” Lloyds TSB said proportionally, the number of complaints equated to less than 1% of their 30m customers. “Our relationship with our customers is at the heart of our business and we take all feedback very seriously. Like every organisation we know there are areas where we can improve and we’re working with our customers to do just that,” it said in a statement. “The vast majority of our customers are happy with the service we provide and this is reflected in the low number of complaints we receive relative to the high number of accounts our customers hold.”
Murdoch model blunder THE SUPERMODEL host of Australia’s Next Top Model has been left red-faced after she announced the wrong winner of the TV contest. Sarah Murdoch was close to tears after realising she had mistakenly said 19-year old Kelsey Martinovich was the winner of the Foxtel TV series during the show’s live finale. Martinovich had completed her acceptance speech before Murdoch backtracked on stage to reveal the real winner from a public vote was 18-year-old Amanda Ware. “I don’t know what to say
Page 12
right now. I’m feeling a bit sick about this,” Murdoch told a 2,000-strong audience. “I’m so sorry. Oh my God, I don’t know what to say. This is what happens when you have live TV folks. This is insane, insane, insane.” But Martinovich was gracious in her sudden defeat, saying: “It’s okay” over and over and repeatedly congratulating Ware. The disastrous event was dissected in real time on Twitter, and it became an international trending topic immediately. Prominent blogger Mia Freedman sent a sympathetic tweet to Murdoch: “Oh @SarahAMurdoch you handled that with grace. I wouldn’t want to be the
person who fed you the wrong name.” Sarah handled what was a difficult situation with utmost professionalism and grace. Speaking after the muddle, Murdoch told the A Current Affair programme: “The last thing that was communicated to me through my earpiece was: ‘Kelsey one, Amanda two.’ “So I went into the read, the winner of Australia’s next top model is... Nothing. [I heard] nothing. “So all I knew was the last thing - ‘Kelsey one, Amanda two’ - so of course [I thought], Kelsey’s the winner.” Foxtel publicity director Jamie Campbell blamed a miscommunication between
series directors in a broadcasting truck control room and Murdoch on stage. She said: “Sarah handled what was a difficult situation with utmost professionalism and grace. Amanda and Kelsey were neck and neck in the voting all night.” Martinovich may have had a short-lived reign as Australia’s Next Top Model, but it was not all bad news. Foxtel said she would receive a £12,000 cash prize and trip to New York as consolation. Ware won an appearance in Harper’s Bazaar magazine, a modelling contract, £12,000, a trip to New York and a car. After the show, she said: “I realise what a great opportunity this is. Once it

Brick bank protester wants Dragons’ help A MAN who bricked up a Barclays branch in a protest against banks has called for tycoons like Sir Richard Branson and the TV Dragons to help turn the economy around. Property developer Cameron Hope said that “things are getting worse” for bank customers and businesses, and the financial institutions “aren’t fit for purpose”. He urged them to “start lending” and was angry that big bonuses were continuing to be awarded to staff despite the public having to tighten their belts. Mr Hope, from Bournemouth, said: “Something has got to change. The Government is doing nothing.” The 59-year-old believes businessmen like Sir Richard and the Dragons should advise ministers how to manage the Government’s coffers. He thinks that such tycoons could apply their business principles to help get rid of red
Page 14
tape - but also to help create jobs. He said: “Why not have the Dragons helping them. Showing them how to do things. “Sir Richard Branson went for Northern Rock. He would have made it a success. We need positive entrepreneurs that make money and create jobs.” The Government would argue that it is already getting rid of inefficiencies as part of its planned austerity measures. Mr Hope and other protesters built an 8ft by 4ft wall of breeze blocks outside the entrance of Barclays in
Westbourne, Bournemouth, Dorset. He said his protest was against the banking industry in general. He said he approached a bank about borrowing £40,000 to develop a flat he owns but the bank would have charged him £7,000 in fees. Mr Hope added he had “no regrets” about the demonstration and hoped the action he would inspire others. Fellow activist Les Dawson, an OAP, said: “The Government seems to be running the country for themselves and the banks.
“The fat cats are getting fatter and the skinny cats are getting skinnier. “There are no jobs and there is going to be a winter of discontent.” The brick wall was taken down two hours into the protest after police threatened the demonstrators with arrest. Mr Hope also criticised the reported £23m that Michael Geoghegan could receive when he steps down as HSBC chief executive. “Who needs £23m”, he argued. The British Bankers’ Association recently insisted its members were doing their best to help small firms. A spokesperson said: “The UK’s banks have established a taskforce to report to the Government on exactly this issue - addressing how banks can further help small businesses through the recovery. “We absolutely agree with the Government that small businesses are vital to securing the economic recovery and have committed to offering every assistance to viable businesses.”
Commuters are going camping to avoid high rents Hard-pressed London commuters are increasingly turning to camping rather than paying exorbitant rents in the capital. "Camping commuters" are pitching their tents or parking their caravans from Monday to Friday and retreating to more permanent homes at the weekends. Lucy Boggis, from Chippenham in Wiltshire, said: "People think of it as a summer holiday in their little caravan, but as long as you've got a caravan that doesn't leak, you're as good as being in your bedroom at home. Better known to some as Tempest from the Sky1 series Gladiators, the 21year-old's campsite at Lee Valley Park in Edmonton, north London, is beside an athletics track where she is training to represent Britain at the 2012 Olympics. Other residents include an IT contractor working in Canary Wharf and an urban planner for Hackney Council. Prices do vary and Lee Valley Park is among the more expensive sites in
London, with single campers paying midseason rates of £122.50 per week, including electricity. However, that is still less than half the average weekly rent of £250 for a one-bedroom flat in London Zones 2 or 3, according to the accommodation website Outlet. Campsite manager Rick Garvey said: "It's certainly a cheaper option. We do seasonal rates so obviously outside our high reason you can benefit from cheaper rates. "We've got a sister campsite just five minutes away that offers static caravans as well and people treat it as their permanent residence." Major cities like London are a magnet for migrants in difficult times and demand for housing continues even if the supply is drying up. Roger Harding, head of policy at the housing charity Shelter, said: "Next year building could be lower than at any time since 1924 so what we need from the Government is a sustained commitment to building affordable homes."

Van man Daredevils are destroys cooking on gas a ‘scone’ in balloon race A “priceless monument” and an important piece of Scotland’s history has been demolished by a van.
The 16th Century archway was all that remained of an Augustinian Abbey which once stood on the lawn of Scone Palace near Perth, home to Scotland’s kings. The palace is now home to William David Murray, the 8th Earl of Mansfield, and his family. The archway was hit by a van being driven by contractors who were on site to pick up a marquee used at an event over the weekend, Scone Palace officials said. Conservation architects are
due to visit the site to see what can be done. Mansfield Estates’ Suzanne Urquhart said “immediate steps” were made to make the area around the archway safe.”We are currently taking advice from Historic Scotland and have arranged for conservation architects to examine what remains of the archway as soon as is practical, with a view to undertaking a reconstruction project in the longer term,” she said.”Clearly we are devastated that such a priceless monument and important piece of Scottish history has been destroyed in this manner, however we are thankful that neither the driver nor any member of the public was injured.”
DAREDEVIL competitors flying gas balloons have been making their way across the UK as they take part in the world’s oldest air race. Twenty teams from 10 countries are all in tiny wicker baskets as they try to travel the furthest in the Gordon Bennett Cup. The race balloons can only be controlled by releasing gas to go down and throwing out sand to go up. The teams took off from Bristol on Saturday and have permission to travel into airspace across Europe, even as far away as Russia. They are being helped by the latest meteorological technology to predict the weather and have GPS tracking systems so people can follow their progress online. The race was first organised by James Gordon Bennett Junior in 1906 and was not won by a British team until
2008. Two years ago British explorer David HemplemanAdams and Jon Mason won after flying 1,098 miles (1,767km) in just over three days. They travelled from Albuquerque in New Mexico to the shores of Lake Michigan, north of Chicago. Their victory meant they had the right to host the race in their home country - and they picked Bristol as their launch site. Some pilots are expected to be in their baskets for up to five days, with the record distance of 2,112 miles (3,399km) being recorded in America in the 2005 event. Mr Hempleman-Adams, from Wiltshire, is flying with Simon Carey, a senior Virgin airline captain, as co-pilot. Mr Hempleman-Adams said of the race: “It will be tough because the French are very experienced and there’s a female team who are very experienced and lightweight.
“Any one team here could win the competition, so as long as I’m not last I’ll be very pleased.” He added his preparations had been hampered by not being able to do any training. “This is the disadvantage for the British teams,” he said. “The French, the Germans, the Belgian teams can all pull up to a launch field in their country, get hydrogen free and practice, and we can’t do that here. “We’re an island nation and we simply can’t do it.” As we go to print, organisers of the world’s oldest balloon race have said they have “some concern” for the US team competing in the race. Contact with Richard Abruzzo and Carol Rymer Davis was lost over the Adriatic Sea. Race director Don Cameron described the weather over the Adriatic as quite poor, with reports of thunderstorms. “There is some concern
about the USA2 team of Richard Abruzzo and Carol Rymer Davis,” said the director of the 54th Gordon Bennett Gas Balloon Race. “The GB2010 control team are in contact with all relevant agencies,” he said. “The Italian Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre has a fast boat and helicopter in the area.” The concern raised as other competitors completed the balloon challenge. British adventurer David Hempleman-Adams and Virgin Airline captain Simon Carey came in third out of a field of 20 hot-air balloonies. The pair landed just after 11am in Serbia after more than three days in the air. They had hoped to win back the title they gained in 2008. A German team remains in the air, while the Swiss team, which covered 2,435km, has now landed. The event was first organised by James Gordon Bennett Junior in 1906.

"wonderful and quite well behaved". He added: "She eats and sleeps mostly at the relevant time and she's been a delight. "The other children (sixyear-old Nancy, and four-yearold Elwen) adore her and pander to her like mad." Mr Cameron also described how his wife Samantha and their children had got used to living in Downing Street. "Samantha has done an amazing job, incredibly quick-
ly, to make it like a family home and the children have adjusted well," he said. "It's odd living above the shop but it has its advantages, you get to see more of the children. "I've been able to pop up at lunchtime and help. I'm sure as pressures mount that will get more difficult." Mr Cameron also revealed he was able to show his father Ian around Chequers shortly before he died.
Gorillas on the run... PM's daughter 'sleeps in cardboard box' SOME might say they are bananas - but hundreds of people dressed in gorilla suits have been running wild in London. They were taking part in a race along the Thames to raise money for the Great Gorilla Organisation - a charity dedicated to the primate's conservation.
Page 16
Around 700 people took part - the same number of mountain gorillas left in the wild across the world. Conservationist and television presenter Bill Oddie fired the starting pistol for the 4.3 mile Great Gorilla Run, which is now in its seventh year. The GGO said the fancy dress run had raised £150,000 - but that could rise to £250,000 when sponsorship ends in November.
The Prime Minister has revealed his new baby daughter has an unusual sleeping place at Downing Street - in a cardboard box. David Cameron said Florence, who was born during a family holiday in Cornwall, was given the makeshift crib by her older sister. "Nancy made her a cardboard box when we were in Cornwall as we didn't have a cot and decorated it and she's

Hollywood legend Tony Curtis dies
HOLLYWOOD star Tony Curtis has died at his home in Las Vegas after suffering a cardiac arrest, aged 85. The actor, who had heart bypass surgery in 1994, passed away in the early hours of yesterday morning, a coroner said. The Some Like It Hot star appeared in more than 140 comedies and dramas during his illustrious career. Sir Roger Moore, who worked closely with Curtis in the TV series the Persuaders, described him as a “very fine” actor. He said: “You never think that friends are going. I’m very sad and also sad for his wife because she adored him. “When we met, we kind of kept looking at each other. But when we got to know each other, we liked each other so much that we became great friends. “We had an awful lot of fun making that series together and we had a lot of laughs together.
Curtis began his career in the 1950s and his good looks and acting abilities quickly made him one of the biggest boxoffice stars during that time. The Brooklyn-born actor had a memorable role in the classic gladiator movie Spartacus in 1960 and received an Oscar nomination in 1959 for The Defiant Ones in which he starred with Sidney Poitier. But his two most enduring performances came in Some Like It Hot with Marilyn Monroe and Jack Lemmon, and The Sweet Smell Of Success in which he played a fawning press agent. But in the late 1960s Curtis’ career was on the wane and he was plagued by poor movies as well as struggles with drugs and alcohol. In an interview, Curtis said: “My life had become unmanageable because of booze and dope. Work became a strain and a struggle. Because I didn’t want to face the challenge, I simply made myself unavailable.” But in the early 1980s Curtis recovered from his drug and alcohol problems and found a new passion in

painting. He once sold more than $1m worth of his art in the first day of an exhibition and famously told an interviewer: “Painting is more meaningful to me than any performance I’ve ever given.” As fascinating to fans as his performances was Curtis’ life off-screen. His long list of famous and beautiful girlfriends included Marilyn Monroe and Natalie Wood, and he tied the knot six times. He first married Psycho actress Janet Leigh in a union he later admitted was partially motivated by publicity value. After divorcing Leigh, he married Christine Kaufman, who was 17 when they met on a film set. Curtis was once quoted as saying: “I wouldn’t be seen dead with a woman old enough to be my wife.” His sixth wife, Jill Vandenberg, was 45 years younger than Curtis. Curtis’ children included actress Jamie Lee Curtis, who was estranged from him for much of his life, and he admitted he was a failure as a father.

The concepts of buying a home in the Canaries THIS week, I am going to start compiling a kind of dictionary connected to the purchase of a property in the Canary Islands. You can find a lot of information on the internet related to this subject but sometimes, although this information is correct, there are many things to bear in mind. Normally, there are several legal steps to be carried out in Spain until you actually own the property outright. It starts with a contract of purchase which is a private document by which, both vendor and buyer, find an agreement. If there is a developer involved,, the property will probably refer to a house or apartment not yet built. The developer usually includes a plan of the property and the buyer pays a deposit or first payment. The proceedings would finish with the last payment at the time of signing the Title Deed of Purchase (Escritura de Compraventa), which is the public document to be recorded at the Land Registry.
Page 18
Sometimes, the developer finds a bank to finance the project and, consequently, there is a mortgage on the land where the development is to be built. This mortgage is divided, charging every apartment (instead of the whole plot) and has to be cancelled before granting the Deed of Purchase. Alternatively, the purchaser can surrogate in the mortgage agreed by the vendor (with the acceptance of the bank). The buyer, of course, can get his own mortgage loan (you may find more information in my article about repossession). Now, I am going to refer to some documents needed after purchasing a property before notary public. Once you have the “Escritura”, you are the real owner of the property. In spite of this, it is important that you register the Escritura at the Land Registry. There are taxes to be paid before one month since the date of the signature of Escritura. It is a
mistake to avoid the payment of taxes if you do not present the Escritura at the Land Registry. Nowadays, the “telematic” information runs so fast, and the Tax office gets this information from the notary office. Once you become owner of the property and register your Escritura, in addition to Transfer Tax-Stamp Duty (IGIC tax in some cases), you have to pay the “Plus value Tax” (“Impuesto sobre el Incremento del Valor de los Terrenos”) at the Town Hall. You also have to contact the Community of Owners in order to fix the payment of future Community fees (this is not applicable if you buy an independent house). Take into account that, at the time of signing the Title Deed, the vendor has to provide you with the information proving that he is updated with the Community of Owners. Another tax is the yearly rates (Impuesto sobre Bienes
Inmuebles or IBI), to be paid at the Town Hall (or Consorcio de Tributos). The electricity and water suppliers also have to be informed about the change of ownership in order to bill the new owner. If you do not change it and the former owner does not pay the new invoices, you could suffer the consequences if the electricity is cut off. The suppliers normally ask for a “Cedula de Habitabilidad”, which is a document to be provided by the Town Hall to the developer, who passes it to the purchaser. Home ownership dictionary Cedula de Habitabilidad: Document released by the Administration to control the health and hygiene of accommodation buildings. It is a document necessary to contract electricity and water. IBI or Impuesto sobre Bienes Inmuebles (known before as “Contribución Urbana”): Town Hall tax yearly charged on the property. It is paid once a year
according to the Cadastral value of the property. The Cadastral value is the one given by the Authority. Escritura: Public document signed and authorised by a notary public, who witnesses its contents. The Deed of Purchase of Property normally has: name of people that attend the notary (including translator, attorneys); description of property; Title of the previous owner; value of property; charges if any; payment of Community fees; price and way of payment. The notary releases a “first copy” or “primera copia” to the purchaser to register it at the Land Registry. Nota simple registral: Document (record) issued by the Land Registry that states the ownership, charges of a certain property (finca). It gives a summary of the history of the plot or property. It helps the proposed purchaser to have information about the property he is going to buy (although the notary would also check that
before signing the Escritura). Vicios ocultos: Hidden defect or fault that appears in the property after purchasing. It was not possible to be detected at that time as it was hidden (“oculto”). If they appear before a certain deadline (10 years, 3 years, 1 year, depending on the cases) it gives the right to the purchaser to enforce the vendor to amend the property. The building law states that those ones which intervene in the edification process are liable for these damages. To guarantee eventual payments of indemnities, there is an obligatory insurance policy to cover such damages (“seguro de caución”). I will continue with the ins and outs of purchasing a property in the Canaries in my next column. PS: some readers asked me to explain the meaning of a Cedula de Habitabilidad, Certificado de Primera Ocupación, etc. I have given some answers today. Those concepts are more complex and I have explained them in the easiest possible way.

Lions get their hooks into charity golf bash SAN MIGUEL Lions Club are “angling” to entice competitors to their Charity Golf Tournament on the Adeje B and C courses on Sunday, 3rd October. It is an 18-hole stableford competition for teams of four, and all proceeds are for FISH (Friends in Silencio Holidays), which is a worthy charity providing trips for under-privileged kids, both here and in the UK. The cost per individual is 50 euros, which includes a buggy, and for tee times and further information regard-
ing the day, please call Ralph on 685 542 128, or email casasolsue@hotmail.com The same Lions Club are also holding a “Curry Fun Afternoon” at the Harish tandoori restaurant in Los Cristianos, the following Sunday (10th Oct). The full banquet costs 15 euros and the afternoon starts at 1.30pm. To reserve places, or for any other information about the event, please call Ralph on the above number, or email him. It’s bound to be an event packed with laughter and fun, and San Miguel Lions President Susan Solomon invites club members and their guests to come along.
Kestrels soaring again
KESTRELS Golf Society welcomed back their swallows for the winter with their third annual competition, spanning two days, in La Gomera. There were separate events for men and ladies, played

over 36 holes, and Tom Gray emerged triumphant for the men. Lesley McCarney took the ladies’ honours, while Bryan Cotton was Nearest the Pin. The Kestrels are a mixture of members and swallows and this event, which attracted 20 players, was organised by Barry McCardell.
Four-legged frolics at Aktiontier refuge THE German-sponsored Aktiontier sanctuary, based at Accion Del Sol in Granadilla, houses 170 dogs, all looking for a new home - or at least, walkies every day. This refuge is open Monday to Friday from 3-6 pm, and the inmates are really spoiled. But Marion, in charge of the operation there, could do with some voluntary dogwalkers. If you fancy a stroll with a four-legged friend now and then, or even daily, then contact her on 922 778 630. Accion Del Sol is situated at Junction 51 on the TF1, Granadilla Industrial Estate. Just follow the signs for ITER, the Eolica windmill farm. You’ll see the refuge, comprising orange, oval buildings, directly under the windmills. Aktiontier’s next big event is an afternoon of entertainRefuge opening hours We are open Tuesday to Sunday, from 2-5pm. Outside of these times, you must make an appointment with Eugenio to facilitate smooth running of the refuge. Thank you. We are situated in Atogo, directly up from the airport, next door to the Ostrich Farm, which is well-signposted. Our thanks to … Roger, Heather and all the staff (pictured) at the Ocean View Bar, Hotel Comodoro, Los Cristianos, where we held a pieand-pea supper night last Wednesday, raising 309 euros. Despite the poor weather, it was well attended by supporters enjoying their food, and the entertainment was provided by Peter Quilty, Helena Campbell, Phil Gibson, Robbie Dominic, Johnny Laff, Hollie Bourne and Suzy Q. We hope to repeat this event in the near future. Well done all. Everyone involved in Sunday’s benefit night at La GuaGua Bar, Fañabe . It was organised by Michaela Bridges, also known as Tina Turner, and there were fantastic prizes donated from the Sound of Musicals, and Freebird Excursions. We raised 230 euros, so thanks to Michaela, and entertainers Gordon King, Dave Michaels, Kerry and Suzy Q for giving their time. Second shop imminent Our second shop is about ready to open its doors. We just need to get a couple of bits of paper and we’re there! It is situated in San Eugenio, opposite La Niña Hotel, near Amanda’s Bar, and we hope to target the tourist market with
ment dedicated, appropriately, to the annual German Oktoberfest, on 17th October. There will be German sausages, music, beer, a pup-
pet show, dog relay races, buggy and horse rides and lots of fun and games for everyone to enjoy. The dogs were out in force yesterday evening (Thursday)
for the Accion Del Sol and Tenerife Fitness Club keep-fit session, which is now up and running. It’s great fun for you and your dog (or one from the refuge), and an excellent way for you both to get fit and make new friends. Organiser Karen says: “We do lots of activities like a power-walk along the prom, relay, ball games and bending exercises. “And at next month’s meeting, we are starting an agility section, using parts of our body, legs as bending poles, arms and legs as jumps for the dogs, who will find it hilarious.” Please contact Karen (687 905 511) or Danni Byrne, from Tenerife Fitness (619 008 035) for details of that next meeting, or for more information about the unique club.
Live Arico Update books, beach items and other holiday essentials. We still need racking and shelving, however, so please call Debbie on the number below if you can help. We also need volunteers to work in both the new shop and our shop in Silencio. If you can spare a few hours a week, are reliable, trustworthy and love dogs, then, please call Debbie. Thank you. Live Arico Flight Line Anyone booking flights to and from the UK with the Live Arico Flight Line will get them at competitive prices, and will also help our dogs. Call now on 922 794 918 and please quote Live Arico Flightline. Dog-grooming Claire is now offering 10% of her fee to Live Arico. She has 18 years of experience, so call her on 660 862 910 for an appointment, and quote Live Arico so we can receive our donation. Upcoming events On Wednesday, 13th October, we will be holding a benefit night at the Java Bar, Los Cristianos, from 9pm. Entertainment line-up to follow. On Sunday the 24th October we will be holding a Fun Day at Chipeque Pool Bar, Los Cristianos, from 3pm until around 7pm. You can Walk on Water for just five euros (good weather not essential), and there will be a jewellery stall, tombola, live entertainment, bbq and raffle. Please come along and join us.
Friday, 5th November is Bonfire Night at the refuge. No fireworks, of course, but a Guy Fawkes, parkin (an oatmeal gingerbread traditionally eaten on this occasion), treacle toffee, sparklers and other winter goodies will be on sale. Bring your torches and let’s have a good old traditional night under the stars. Revised adoption procedures A minimum 50-euro donation for an adopted male dog, and 75 euros for a female, is now required by Live Arico. This is paid direct to Hospivet Sur on collection of your new pet, which will be chipped, neutered, vaccinated and wormed. South Tenerife Rescue Centre We have now sold 513sqm of land up to now, making a total of 2,565 euros. The plan to buy our own plot of land remains, possibly even where we are now renting, so are you prepared to buy a square metre of land for Live Arico? At just five euros, you will receive a certificate from Live Arico for now, and your name, address and number of square metres purchased will be on a Roll of Honour at the new refuge. Live Arico Shop news (in association with Tenerife Nursing and Care) The shop is on the frontline of Coral Mar, at ground level, next door to the Coral Bar. This makes life far easier for everyone: cars unloading can park right outside, and our elderly
and disabled customers no longer have to negotiate the stairs. We have a fantastic range of hand-made cards for all occasions, decorated beautifully and costing from two euros. We are also grateful for items of furniture as we are working in conjunction with Fish for Furniture, at Los Abrigos, and Idea, in Adeje. Call Rick to arrange pick-ups. Any donations of cat and dog food at the shop are most welcome. Through popular demand, the shop is now open at the following times: Mon-Fri: 104pm. Sat: 10-2. Sunday: Closed. The shop will also be open when there’s an event on in Coral Mar Square, Live Arico hot lines For any questions about the shop, the dogs or Live Arico, or if you would like to make a donation and need somebody to pick it up, call Debbie on the number below. Strictly Come Dancing 9:00pm - 10:00pm, BBC1 From that first fleeting glimpse, ex-EastEnders actress Kara Tointon and Countryfile presenter Matt Baker both seem in with a chance of lifting the glitter ball trophy - although Felicity Kendal was pretty nimble on her toes, too. It’s probably kinder not to mention Paul Daniels’ efforts. But, Ann Widdecombe: I can’t see her winning, but she’s a great sport and is obviously going to be entertaining, so she and Anton Du Beke are likely to be around for a few weeks yet.
When Piers Met Lord Sugar 9:00pm - 10:15pm, ITV1 The entrepreneur opens up his Florida mansion and talks to Piers Morgan about his well documented career, revealing his softer side as he discusses his lasting marriage and forsakes the Bentleys and private jet for a spot of cycling. In a trip back to his childhood home on an estate in London’s East End, Lord Sugar recalls his family’s poverty and the early drive to make money. He recalls landmark moments, such as floating Amstrad on the Stock Exchange in 1980 at the age of 33, and having the courage to sack Terry Venables as manager of Tottenham Hotspur. He reserves his most scathing sarcasm for the psychological profession.
Ryder Cup Golf 11:30pm - 2:00am, Sky Sports 1 Day 3. Highlights from the third and final day of the 38th Ryder Cup at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, South Wales, featuring the singles matches. While the American team dominated the singles session last time out, Colin Montgomerie was the hero in 2004 as he sank the winning putt to maintain his remarkable record of never losing a singles match. Serving as European captain this time, he will have been expertly positioned should any of his players have needed some inspiration, as they aimed to regain the cup.
Jamie’s American Food Revolution 10:00pm - 11:00pm, Channel 4 With only two days left to complete his challenge, Jamie Oliver turns to DJ Rod to make an on-air appeal for more people to join the cooking course. The chef also pays a visit to Huntington mortuary, where he discovers that extra-large coffins are being purpose-made to bury supersized people, and meets a student chef who reveals she may only have seven years to live because of her weight.
71 Degrees North 9:00pm - 10:00pm, ITV1 The remaining six celebrities face an exhausting day-to-night race. The two teams must ride on snowmobiles to the top of a frozen waterfall, which they must then abseil down before melting a block of ice using only the equipment they carry with them. The next morning the contestants take their fifth immunity challenge, which is an assault course along a frozen riverbed. Kate Thornton and Gethin Jones present.
Seven Days 10:00pm - 11:05pm, Channel 4 Documentary following a variety of people living or working in Notting Hill, including a hairdresser, a rapper and two models. Between 20 and 30 members of the public agreed to be filmed as they share their views, whether they are about politics, celebrity, news and sport, or their own lives.
River Cottage Every Day 8:00pm - 9:00pm, Channel 4 Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall turns his attention to vegetables. After trying to win over the shoppers of Bridport with crudites, he hopes to persuade Poole Fire Station’s Green Watch to go vegetarian for four days. He also takes a look at ways to prepare broad beans and celery, while Gill Meller demonstrates how to use potato as a main course, and Pam Corbin makes piccalilli.

JOE ‘IN MY OPINION’ FERGUSON Weekly Update Email: joe.ferguson@canarianweekly.com
IT HAS been a long time since I was in a bookshop, yet it has been a love of mine since I can remember. Even if not buying I would spend an hour or so browsing. To me, it has always been a reminder that there is intelligent life on the planet. Especially now, when we are all too quick to look up simple bullet points for information via the internet. And with Apple’s new iBook app, you can download a full classic novel on your iPhone or iPad! I am all for this, obviously, because for far too long, quite a lot of people just don’t seem to read any more. Okay, maybe that's an exaggeration, but the Daily Star and Heat magazine do not count. I believe it really does not matter what it is you are reading, as long as it gets the brain stimulated. I have mentioned Heat Magazine. I used to work for the company who brought this to the top of the Celebrity gossip tree. If it were not for Big Brother ten years ago, however, this publi-
Page 36
Back to the future now! cation would have died in its infancy. Put a picture of Jade Goody on the front and - kerching! Money in the bank and, at that time, it was a good read. Over the last few years, though, it seems to have gone down the road of pandering to 13-year-old girls. There’s less gossip and more interviews with Cheryl, Jordan and whoever the latest goodlooking male vampire happens to be. The teenagers of today love all this stuff, but with so many mags looking exactly the same, they all seem to be bought, even though they all carry the same stories. It’s time I revealed that all the info for which kids are paying money out is readily available on the internet for free. TMZ.com anyone? The newspapers are well, just that. We love them, and they will always be a staple habit. And, as of this
week, you can look at www.canarianweekly.com by clicking on the picture of the front page. You can read the new edition, cover-to-cover, with each page turning as if by magic. This is what I am getting at: technology bringing us new ways of looking at the written word. But no matter how many times I have delved into the internet, or tried reading a book on my iPhone, I get saddened at the thought that we might just be heading into an era that will be hard to reverse. As a little kid, I would get 10p on a Friday for pocket money. My brother and sister would always be buying sweets, and they would hate it when I took my time over the comics in our local shop. The first two choices were no-brainers … The Dandy and Beano. They were 2p each,
which left me 6p to spend on a superhero of my choice. And, as I got older, I discovered what would become a classic called The Look-in. This took all my favourite TV shows and turned them into a weekly cartoon strip - programmes like The Tomorrow People, Six Million Dollar Man and even The Benny Hill show. Like most things from my childhood, as far as a reader is concerned it is all change. No more Topper, Bash Street Kids or Minnie The Minx. Everything you read has to be based on a reality TV show, which is not really the correct terminology today. There is no such thing as reality television any more, as all the shows are full of wellknown Z-List celebs, and anyone from the public can act up in front of the cameras. It just proves to me that the days of comic strips were the best. It’s all in the imagination.
I am always accused of being too nostalgic in this column, but sometimes it’s called for. But most of the time, when I do look into the past, it’s just my own comparison with what's going around us. Look at it this way - many of the gadgets we have today have been all thanks to looking at the past. Just think of the early Flash Gordon blackand-white episodes. They used TV screens to talk to each other. Iphone4 now has that facility, called “Facetime”. Star Trek had their hand-held communicators. How long have we been using mobile phones? Back To The Future had the hoverboard, and I believe even they exist! I miss the smell of print and getting the ink on my fingers. You did know that the newspapers you read no longer use real ink and that they are printed digitally? Well you do now!
So, as much as I miss all that, I know that it will not be too long before everyone will just call up whatever they want to read on the television set. I am glad that back home, I have kept thousands of mags and comics to pass on. Just like the passing of the pen pal, (we have Facebook friends now), the writing of letters, (we have email now) and the ending of the blind date, (we have web cam and text to show our body parts off to the opposite sex), things move on to a different level. But is it for the good? Even after writing this and mourning the passing of certain things through technology, I have to say Yes to moving on. So yes we can be nostalgic AND look to the future as both are merging together. So with the subject in mind, I can finish with this … and they all lived happily ever after! Joe

SUE MCDONALD Common Sense Furnishings Email: sue.mcdonald@canarianweekly.com
Trying to rent out or sell a property without success? WITH the rental market very competitive at the moment, there is a wide choice of properties for potential renters to choose from. But what will make them choose your property over any other? Make sure you are showing the place to its best advantage to ensure that yours is the one that stands out in their minds. Firstly, they will be looking to see that the property is big enough for their purposes, and has all the basic facilities they need: well-equipped kitchen, decent bathroom, etc. But once these basic requirements are met, they will then form an impression of the property, and whether they can picture themselves living there. This is what will distinguish your property from the others they have seen. It goes without saying that a thorough clean, and possibly a coat of paint, can make the world of difference to any home. The changes I suggest here will obviously depend on the budget you have available but, even with limited resources, you can make a big difference. Take a good and brutallyhonest look around the entrance. Is it neat and wel-
Page 38
coming, or is it gloomy and cluttered? Sometimes, it is better to take out some furniture if it serves no useful purpose and is just taking up space. Check that the light fittings are clean, and powerful enough to light each area. In gloomy areas, install a mirror to reflect whatever natural light there is, and make the area appear bigger. Be careful not to situate a mirror at the foot of a staircase as this can be disorientating and cause accidents. In the lounge, arrange the furniture as you expect it to be grouped normally, often around the TV. Is the sofa
reasonably comfortable and serviceable? If not, consider replacing it. If the upholstery is a bit worn, think about using a throw to cover it over. If the curtains or blinds have seen better days, consider replacing them. This need not be expensive, and if you choose a colour that tones with the sofa, and add a couple of scatter cushions to match, the whole room will begin to take on a designer look. Do any pictures tone with the rest of the colour scheme? If you have too many pictures up on the walls, this can look cluttered and
make the room look smaller. Equally, a picture bearing no relation to the rest of the items in the room can look like an afterthought. If the room looks a bit bare, consider buying a rug, around which the furniture can be grouped, and this is another opportunity to introduce a bit of colour and style. In the bedroom, make sure the beds look as good as they can. That means made up with clean sheets and, if possible, with a coloured throw that should tone with whatever window dressing you have. Again, make sure you install a mirror, either above a dress-
ing table, or a full-length one on the wall. It’s practical, and it also makes the room look bigger. A picture to tone, usually over the bed, fills up space and ties all the colours together. There is little you can do with regard to the condition of the bathroom, except to make sure it is spotlessly clean, and smells nice (thanks to a plug-in air freshener). You can introduce colour through a set of bath mats and a coordinating towel. In the kitchen, again, ensure that the lighting is adequate. The worktops should be clean, and relatively clear. If you have utensils stored there, think about putting hooks on the walls to keep the surfaces clear to make it look bigger. All in all, these common sense tips should help your property look as good as it can do. If you are still living in the property while trying to rent or sell it, it goes without saying that you will have be very
strict with your housework, and do your best to keep everything neat and tidy. Try to tidy away any personal collections and knick-knacks to leave a more neutral surface. That way, the potential tenant or buyer can image their own things there. Living as I do with a teenager who thinks it would be much easier just to leave his whole shoe collection by the front door, I wish you luck with this part! But small changes, such as I have detailed, can make a big difference to that first impression, and could be an excellent investment if your property rents out or sells quickly. All items are available at Deco Nuevo, next to Ofipapel in Los Cristianos.

DAVID HUDGELL Getting to the root of your gardening problems! Email: David.hudgell@canarianweekly.com
Prickly subject will suit kids down to the ground HERE’S a good idea to keep the kids away from the telly, mobile phone or computer for a while, and it’s really good fun for the whole family. This entails growing items from seed or small plants. My suggestion is to construct a prickly cactus garden, which will certainly focus their minds. For some reason, children always seem to be attracted to cacti, and the great variety of shapes and sizes makes them fun to collect and grow. Planting them together is also and makes an excellent display, and the good news is that they will still look great even if they get neglected. The exercise will give you an opportunity to talk about how cacti have been able to adapt to the hot, dry environment of the deserts where they come from. You can also discuss all the different types that exist. You’d be surprised at the cacti varieties that are displayed in films, for instance, and how children respond when they spot them on telly. It will it take about one hour to plant up, following a pleasant trip to the garden centre, and with the fabulous weather over here, you will find plenty of cacti examples there. To get this garden growing and growing, you will need
According to ‘Horticulture Week’, Garden centre group Notcutts is opening its first Christmas store, called ‘Deck The Halls’, in Bluewater shopping centre, Kent today (Friday). ‘Deck The Halls’ will stock selections from Notcutts’ Christmas range from trees and decorations to Christmas food and gifts. Two ‘Deck The Halls’ stores are planned for
the following: Plastic washing-up bowl or large plant pot, not too deep Crocks (broken plant pot) Shingle and coarse sand or grit Compost Cacti and succulents A few pebbles from the beach
Step-by-step guide 1. Ask the kids to place some crocks in the base of the pot or bowl. They need to cover them with a layer of shingle or coarse sand to give the plants the good drainage they need. 2. Next, they should mix some coarse sand into their
compost, and then fill the pot almost to the top with it. 3. Tell them to sort the plants into those with prickles and thorns, and those without. Take the non-prickly ones out of their pots and plant them in the bowl. They should ensure there is enough soil
around the roots, because plants like to feel safe and well firmed into their new home, and not loose and floppy! 4. Now for the prickly subject of the prickly ones! For obvious reasons, you should warn them to be careful when extracting the plants
from their own little pots. The children should pick them up by wrapping a folded sheet of newspaper around each one, so that they do not get the prickles in their fingers. Ask them to plant them in the main pot and firm them in carefully. 5. When they are all planted, the children should place pebbles in the spaces between the plants, then use the sand and shingle to cover any soil they can still see. 6. They can water the pot gently, using a watering can with a sprinkler end on it. 7. They should then place their new garden on a windowsill and wait for it to start growing! 8. The garden will need to be watered only when the soil is dry because these plants come from places where water is extremely rare! 9. Drainage is all-important for these plants. Mix up two parts of compost with one part coarse sand or grit. 10. Take care with the thorns and prickles because some are extremely sharp! Others are dangerous because they enter the skin like a splinter, but cannot be seen, which makes removal difficult. The nice bonus about cactus plants is that although they are generally grown for their beautiful foliage, some will flower and present the most fascinating display of colour.
Deck the halls this Christmas. Customers can expect “opulent displays of the key colour themes” for Christmas, including aubergine and copper, frosted Mistletoe silver and white and traditional reds and greens. Chief executive Andy King says ‘Deck The Halls’ is a natural extension of the Notcutts brand:

“Notcutts has been famous for its Christmas displays for years, with families coming from miles around to enjoy our centres during the festive season. We pride ourselves on providing excellent quality but fantastic value Christmas decorations, trees and gifts and feel sure that Bluewater shoppers
will love ‘Deck The Halls’.” For the first time customers will also be able to shop online with Notcutts this Christmas on its new web store Notcutts.co.uk. Garden centre companies Webbs and Garden & Leisure have opened Christmas pop-ups at shopping centres in the last two years.

There are no rules about mature hair So you’ve given up? You’re too old now to care about how you look? Who’s going to be looking at you anyway because you’re over 50, right? Wrong! So many clients have this attitude and I say so many times: “This is just too old for you.” But why do so many over50s slip into the “not caring any more” mode? I have a 65year-old client who would pass for 50. She’s got great skin, fantastic figure and a good dress sense, but her hair was permed, grey and 20 years too old for her. She had always been told that now she had reached 65, she had to look that age. Why? Who makes that law? I’m not saying, “Let’s try to make you look 25 again”, because that doesn’t work, either. Yet it is my profession to give an opinion sometimes, not only about someone’s hair but also the dress sense, too. It’s a complete image thing and they go hand in hand. I always try to match hair with personality/dress sense. There’s no point giving someone short and funky if they wear conservative clothing, as everything has to tie in. So forget your rollers, your tight perms, your premature grey hair, and think “youthful” again. No, we’re not talking about trying to make anyone look
Page 40
absurd, but of adding some spark back to your look and removing a few years. Look No1 Ideal if you want a short but soft shape. The contrast of short and long gives this look a youthful edge. It’s easy to style and literally falls into place. The lighter sections around the face are great for blending away greys, without going for an all-over blonde look. It’s also a great shape for round, triangular and square-shaped faces. Look No2 Without having your longer hair cut shorter, this is an ideal length if you want “easy to style”, but still want to fasten it back. The soft fringe and choppy layering keep it flattering and soft to the face. And the colour is broken up with soft, brown tones and a mix of honey and ash blonde
to create fullness and dimension to the cut. It is great for round faces and longer jaw lines. So,, if you’re ready for a change and want to try something new, remember: go for soft not sharp, light not dark and never break the golden rule of mature hair. If your mum loves your hair, then it’s time for a change!
I’m obese, so how can I lose weight? Q: I'm obese, and weigh more than 18 stone. I've recently joined a gym, but I’m finding it hard to vary the exercises I can do. I’ve been switching things up with dumbbells, but I'm working my upper body only. I can’t fit into all the machines that work my lower body, and I’m not able to do floor exercises. One thing I am able to do is water-walking in the pool, but there aren’t any classes available to teach me new water exercises. Do you have any recommendations for how I can start really dropping the weight? A: First off, GOOD FOR YOU for getting to the gym and being proactive about getting healthy. You’re already off to a great start. Okay, now let’s get down to business, starting with plain walking. The good thing is that you don’t need to be in the gym to do this. It’s free, and you can do it anywhere. Walk around your neighbourhood as often as you can, and for as long as possible. Time yourself, make a note of it then set a target and set a goal.
Shadow boxing with light dumbbells will give you a good cardio workout and make use of the muscles in your upper body. In the pool, try the following exercises: • Use a kickboard/float. Hold on to the board and use your legs to power you across the pool. • Do water running, or walking across the pool. • Hold a pool block between your legs to make them inactive and, using only your upper body, swim across the pool. • Tread water. Hold on at the side of the pool and just kick for as long as you can, or do jumping jacks . As you drop pounds, your options will open up significantly. In the meantime, the recommendations above will really kickstart your weight loss, provided you are also watching your diet. I’m really proud of the effort you are making. The scale has nowhere to go but down, and we are all supporting you! Q: I really want to improve my flexibility. Is there a way to do
this beyond just stretching after a workout? A: Well, stretching is the key to improving flexibility, but keep in mind that there are many different ways to stretch. There’s static stretching, which employs the traditional stationary stretches you’re probably familiar with. Then there’s dynamic stretching, which is stretching combined with movement. Yoga and Pilates are good examples of dynamic stretching. And believe it or not, the resistance training you’re doing takes your muscles through a full range of motion, including stretching them. The “eccentric” part of a contraction, such as the lowering of a dumbbell on a biceps curl, lengthens and stretches the muscle. You actually should stretch during and after a workout, and not necessarily before. And ALWAYS make sure that you are warmed up before stretching or strengthening your muscles. This will allow a greater range of motion and help prevent injuries.

VAL SAINSBURY Keeping her finger on the pulse Email: val.sainsbury@canarianweekly.com
THE National Health Service should pay fat people to lose weight and smokers to quit and give children toys for eating their fruit and vegetables! That’s the latest incentive for overweight people in the UK, according to a report commissioned by NICE, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, which is the NHS rationing body. Yet NICE in the past has refused to pay for dozens of cancer drugs on the grounds of cost. Medicines rejected include the drugs Avastin, for advanced bowel cancer, and Nexavar, for advanced liver cancer. Is it any wonder that the group’s so-called latest advice has been greeted with anger by critics, who claimed that such “bribes” were draining the public purse of money which could be better spent elsewhere? The study examined a series of schemes, including one in Kent which pays dieters up to £425 for losing weight, and another in Scotland which gives pregnant women shopping vouchers worth up to £650 for quitting the smoking habit. It also looked at programmes in Oxford, Manchester, London and Bangor in Wales, where schools have been giving toys -
A fat lot of good these NICE people are doing such as juggling balls, stickers and pencils - to children who have eaten their fruit and vegetables. The report said that such rewards could be “an effective way of encouraging people to change their unhealthy ways”. A furious Fiona McEvoy, from The Tax-Payers’ Alliance, said that state funds should not be used to pay people to change their lifestyles, “Bribing people to lose weight, or quit smoking, is nothing but a quick fix, which patronises the individuals in question, and drains muchneeded money away from the public purse,” she observed. “At a time when cancer drugs are being denied to sufferers, because of lack of funds, many will be disgusted to learn that NICE are considering such a costly approach.” Other schemes examined in the report include a pilot in Manchester, which rewards overweight parents for walking their children to school. As part of a £30m project, supermarket points are given to unfit people who attend keep-fit classes, weight-loss
01 October 2010 - 07 October 2010
clubs, or go for a run in the park. Overweight people gain credit points, which they can cash in for groceries just for turning up, with extra rewards depending on how much weight they lose. In Newcastle, Bristol, Torbay, Manchester and Bury St Edmunds, those aged 16 to 22 are given subsidised gym membership, if they visit at least once a week. After all that tosh, the report admitted to finding limited evidence about whether the schemes make a difference.
Now there’s a surprise! In the Scottish anti-smoking project, for instance, the study acknowledged that 80% of the women in the £43,000 scheme were smoking again, within three months of giving birth. The recommendations from NICE’s Independent Citizens’ Council do not constitute its official advice to the NHS. Its board will launch a public consultation on the matter before considering the paper, which would inform future guidance. However, the rationing body has already sup-
ported financial rewards for heroin addicts. Originally, NICE recommended that addicts who attended treatment programmes should be given the chance to win prizes, such as televisions and MP3 players. The body dropped the idea following a public outcry, but, instead, recommended that shopping vouchers worth up to £10 could be awarded to those who completed programmes, or showed they were clear of drugs. Last year, the NICE institute fuelled controversy when it ruled that marriage-guidance counselling should be funded by the NHS, and supported the use of acupuncture for back pain, despite finding there was no good evidence it worked. The report followed a threeday meeting of NICE’s Citizens’ Council, where members were asked to vote about the use of incentives. “More than 60% said they were in favour of such schemes, as long as they were only used as a “last resort”, and were not exchangeable for tobacco or alcohol.
Sir Michael Rawlins, chairman of NICE, said: “We clearly face several public-health challenges in today’s society, some more obvious than others. “We must seek to improve these in ways that are likely to achieve the best outcomes to those affected. The majority of the council has voted in favour of the use of incentives under certain circumstances, but this clearly remains a divisive issue.” Dr Helen Waters, from the UK Faculty of Public Health, said there was some evidence that reward schemes worked. “They usually cost the same as other ways of changing people’s habits, such as weight-loss clubs and smoking-cessation groups,” she said. But she added that there were risks about the message such payments sent, to those who received them, and to the rest of the population. “There is some concern about the broader, long-term messages, that these schemes could be seen to be rewarding people for developing unhealthy habits,” Dr Waters admitted.

Don’t fall into that ‘weighty’ barbecue trap
BARBECUES are being blamed for fuelling Britain’s obesity epidemic, with men and women alike scoffing far to much fatty food at these outdoor feasts. At the moment, men are eating a massive 3,500 calories and women more than 2,500, which is way above the recommended daily allowances. According to recent research by Boots and the Tony Leighton Weightloss
Page 42
Programme, food piled on individual plates include two sausages, one or two beefburgers, two chicken drumsticks, up to two meat skewers, fish, baked potato, sidesalad, pasta and dessert. That ought to be enough to feed mum, dad and a child, yet people just tend to scoff and scoff (and drink and drink), especially when it’s a balmy evening and they are with their pals. Of the 2,000 peoplewho were quizzed, 32% admitted they ate more than usual at barbecues, while 41% “forgot” about the extra calories and turned a blind eye to what they
were eating. Nutritionist Sarah Battishall said: “Eating your daily calorie allowance in just one meal puts you at risk of gaining weight, which can lead to potential health problems.” Yet BBQs should be fun without the worry of piling on the pounds, say the British Heart Foundation. In fact, they maintain that BBQs can and should be a great opportunity for healthy eating, in a relaxing manner with family and friends. A Heart Foundation spokeswoman offers the following suggestions to make the al fresco lifestyle a pleasant and healthy experience: Limit the pre-prepared burgers and sausages, but if you are going for these options, then check the nutrition labels and choose the ones with the least saturated fat and salt per 100g Try making your own burgers using lean beef or turkey mince, which will help you control the amount of fat
and salt in them Oily fish like sardines, pilchards and salmon are heart healthy, and can all be grilled on the barbeque Marinating chicken, lean pork or beef can be a great way to add flavour and keep the meat moist, without adding too much fat. Try using low-fat natural yoghurt, mixed with garlic, pepper and dried coriander, cumin and turmeric to create a tandooristyle flavour for chicken, which will be particularly tasty with baked, sweet potatoes. Because of the spices, you also won’t need to add salt. Vegetable kebabs or corn on the cob will cook slowly, placed on the cooler part of the barbeque and turned occasionally. Combine these with some wholegrain bread, rice or pasta salad, or jacket potatoes and a couple of colourful, crunchy salads; and it’s a feast which is good for your health - and great to eat as well.

Sudoku - X
The rules of sudoku X are simple - just enter the numbers 1 - 9 once in each row, column and 3 x 3 square within the sudoku X puzzle grid. In addition to standard sudoku, the numbers must only occur once in each side of the 'X' that is marked on the grid. Use logic alone to deduce where each of these numbers must be placed in every cell of a puzzle. Don’t worry! We´ve kept in two original sudokus for you on the right.

Libra September 24th-October 23rd You may have problems getting along with someone at work, but don’t lose your rag yet. Opportunities to have your say come soon enough and, until then, you would be better to prove to everyone how good you are at managing what is obviously a very tricky situation. In fact, impressing your boss for starters would go a long way to achieving that pay rise you believe you deserve.
SCORPIO Your ruling planet Mars is pushing you to say things, which you do not really mean, and you are in danger of casting yourself in a spoilt light. The younger generation know just what to say to lead you astray and, if they try in midweek, we could see you really shocking friends and family! Beware, because someone is trying to steal your thunder for recent hard work. SAGITTARIUS Many Sagittarians are going to be thinking of changing their careers to something, which has more personal satisfaction. But don’t do anything rash, though. It is important that you think about all of your actions, as the changes you are considering making are more major than you could possibly imagine. CAPRICORN You will have to try to spend a little more time on your career. For a sign which is usually so ambitious, you have been acting in a very lazy manner. Don’t ruin all the hard work you have put into your life, but think and take responsibility because the future looks bright AQUARIUS You won’t believe the kind of gossip you are going to be hearing over the
coming weeks, but far more of it is actually true than you think. Time spent with an old friend can tell you most about a person from your past, and should also stop the feeling that you were to blame as well. Your love action beckons. PISCES Many of those born under this sign are going to find it impossible not to speak their mind and say how they feel about the major events which have transpired over the last few weeks and months. Try to be nice to Aquarians as they have had a tough time of late, and you can do much to improve how they view life at this time. But your career is looking so tantalising. ARIES You would be better telling a close one how you are feeling Aries, as he or she can already guess what you are thinking from that strained look on your face - and the funny way you keep looking at them. If you don’t speak now, you may well lose the chance to make the changes you want. This can be your most constructive week yet, so don’t toss it away for want of a chat, or unloading a problem. TAURUS You are getting plenty of attention; the only problem is that the person you really want to attract still doesn’t

seem to have noticed you. Travel IT is something many people dream about because it sounds so idyllic, but few ever chase that dream. Yet cruising along the Norfolk Broads is a wonderful way to unwind, and it offers great adventures into the bargain. The entire area is beautiful and unspoilt, and the cruising is gentle and vast, providing you with more than 200 km of waterways to cover. When you choose a boating holiday on the Norfolk Broads, you’ll find plenty to do if you enjoy getting out and about, or have youngsters to entertain. And if you are just after a spot of rest and relaxation, you’ll find that as well as you drift along the waterways on a canal-boat trip. First things first, and you’ll need to find the best boat hire on the Norfolk Broads and choose a vessel suitable for your needs. You might require a boat with two berths if you’re travelling with a friend, or four berths if you are taking your family on your campaign for adventure. Depending on how long you have to spend on the water, you’ll also need to give some thought to the places you’d like to visit.
Page 44
www.canarianweekly.com
Water way to spend your perfect holiday The Broads encompass destinations such as Horning, Horsey Mere and Oulton Broad, from which you can journey on to well-known locations like Cambridge, Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft and Norwich. If you plan to spend much of your time on the boat, you can traverse the Bure, Ant, Thurne, Yare and Waveney rivers. Begin your journey from the village of Horning, home of the famous Three Rivers Race. Every June, the local sailing club runs the event, which sees boats and crews visit specific points along the Bure, Ant and Thurne in the quickest time possible to become champions. Although the race is a big attraction, you can explore the village during the rest of the year and discover other interesting locations to visit, such as the RAF Air Defence Radar Museum and the pretty, double-decked Mississippi paddleboat Southern Comfort, which sails along the River Bure.
From this central spot, you might like to cruise the northern broads, which will take you to such places as the village of Woodbastwick, on the edge of Cockshoot Broad. Here, you can visit the local Norfolk Brewery and sample some real ale, before climbing to the top of the ancient church tower at Ranworth and enjoying fantastic, panoramic views of the broads. You could also moor your boat at Hickling Broad, which
is a national nature reserve and also a sailing centre, if you fancy trying your hand at the sport. And if you progress well with your sailing lessons, you might even relish the opportunity to master the skill at Barton Broad, where Admiral Lord Nelson also perfected his abilities. Don’t forget to call in at some other local attractions, such as Toad Hole Cottage on the How Hill Nature Reserve at Ludham, where you can
gain an insight into Victorian country life and explore the beautiful surroundings. If you’d prefer to spend your time on the region’s waterways, you might want to opt for a three-river cruise along the Bure, Yare and Waveney. During your journey you’ll pass Lowestoft, where you can stop off and visit its maritime museum. Cruising down the rivers will also lead you to the seaside resorts along the east coast, which will be perfect for entertaining children who love rides and fairgrounds. Travel down the River Yare and you can moor your boat at the cathedral city of Norwich, and take in the sights of the quaint, cobbled streets and two cathedrals. If you do explore the city, you will find plenty of attractions awaiting you, from guided tours and a castle museum and art gallery to the mediaeval Dragon Hall and a centre for visual arts. But if you’ve plenty of time to spend on the water, why
not opt for a grand tour of the whole region? Spend two weeks on the broads and cover all the rivers, stopping off at locations that catch your eye along the way. Moor your boat at the village of South Walsham for some pleasant strolls around the area, which is full of thatched cottages and open spaces, or pay a visit to Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden to get really close to nature. If you’re a history buff, call in at Brundall on the north bank of the River Yare, adjacent to Surlingham Broad, and learn all about how the Romans began building boats in the area. Here, you will also find St Laurence Church, which dates back to 1250. More than 120 miles of lockfree cruising awaits you in this beautiful region, where you might spot rare flora and fauna as you drift along. So, a floating holiday with a few enjoyable history lessons thrown in for good measure. Source: Travelbite.co.uk

ON THE ROAD WITH JAV Behind the Wheel Email: Jav@canarianweekly.com
THE makers of this futuristic-looking featherweight motor have won an incredible prize of £3.16m (3.8m euros) in a challenge to design a car which achieves 100mph.
Heavyweight prize for a Light winner
The competition, funded by American auto-insurance company Progressive, was organised to inspire car-makers around the world to build such a super-efficient vehicle that would appeal to the mass market. So, no concept cars or science projects, but real machines for this extraordinary event. It was launched last April in Brooklyn, where competing vehicles from across the globe were awarded marks for a series of performance and efficiency tests. The top award went to the Edison2 Very Light Car No98, whose design opted for a more familiar internal-combustion engine, rather than an electric one. The Edison2, made by a Virginia company, swayed the judges with its lightweight materials, and superior aerodynamics.
The car is powered by a single-cylinder motorcycle engine, which burns a mix of 85% ethanol and 15% petrol, mounted at the back of an extremely lightweight frame. The designers, mainly former racing drivers, decided to stick with an internal combustion engine because batteries add weight. “Electric cars have real issues,” said the Edison2 blog. “Batteries are heavy, big and costly. With electric drives, cars get heavier, performance suffers and costs go up. The entire car, which has been likened to a helicopter, or an egg on wheels, weighs in at 830lbs (376kg), nearly half the weight of the Smart Car. Drivers and passengers get into the four-seater by climbing in through the window, like a racing car. It has a top speed of 100mph, enough acceleration
HOW’S this for a coincidence? Just days after the Edison2 Light Car won 3.8m euros (above) the only remaining electric car designed by inventor Thomas Edison was revealed. The 1912 machine has been restored to its former glory after languishing in a London garage for almost half a century. Edison, who created the
to cope with traffic, a heater and basic air-conditioning, great fuel economy and, according to Edison2’s owner, a realistic price tag. Germany’s Oliver Kuttner, a former racing driver whose group manufactured the Edison2, said the Edison2, made of low-cost, recyclable materials, could potentially go on sale for 14,800 euros
(£12,600) if it ever reached the market. But America’s Consumer Reports, which rates cars, said the machine was still very much in the development stage, with work needed on braking and handling. The competition’s two runner-ups each took home 1.7m euros (£1.26m) for electricdrive vehicles.
Team X-Tracer, from Switzerland, won with a car that produced more than 197mpg, which was the highest rating in the event. In comparison, a Toyota Prius hybrid gets about 51mpg. The other runner-up, made by Li-Ion motors from North Carolina, was a two-seater electric vehicle called the Move2, which squeezes
187mpg on a single charge, with a maximum range of 200 miles. Both companies are taking orders for their cars. But Felix Wagner, leader of the X-Tracer team, admitted they would not suit everyone’s pocket. “We cannot mass-produce because we are a small company,” he said. “The real thing is that we are here!”
Edison’s bright spark still running light bulb and was the brains behind more than 1,000 other inventions, also built this car, now believed to be worth at least £1m. Bob Burrell of Chelmsford, Essex, who builds historic racing engines for a living, spent eight years renovating it. It was one of three built by Edison to prove the power of another of his great inventions, the battery. Sadly, the
other two cars have vanished. “Edison’s vision was to make the longest-lasting battery in the world, and the cars he built were a part of that quest,” said Mr Burrell. “He came from America to London and built three cars, one of which he drove from
Scotland to London, charging it up along the way. The final leg, of 170 miles, has still never been beaten by an electric car. “A hundred years ago, Edison said electricity was the future because all the oil would be pumped out of the ground. “But it was felt that
more money could be made from taxing petrol. Imagine what we would have now if Edison had been listened to a century ago?” The Edison car is snail-like compared with modern equivalents such as the Nissan LEAF, set to be launched next year as the first all electric,
zero-emission, five-door, family hatchback. This 1912 model, with 15 two-volt batteries powering a 30-volt electric motor, has a top speed of 25mph. But, as Mr Burrell pointed out: “In Edison’s day, it would have been speedy in comparison with other cars.”

Xerez 2 CD Tenerife 0 ANOTHER shocking performance last week made it five straight defeats and the club’s worst ever start to a season. Caretaker boss Alfredo Merino was unable to inspire a change in fortune, and Tenerife are now rooted to the bottom of the Second Division. But out of darkness cometh light and this week, Tenerife’s board unveiled our latest manager. Step forward Juan Carlos Mandia. The former Hercules and Racing Santander coach has the task of turning around a season that is fast going down the dumper. As Yazz would sing, The Only Way Is Up, and Mandia is aware of this: “We must erase what has happened and start again,” he said. “I know it will not be easy, but it is only five games
Tenerife get their Man-dia gone. We have a blank sheet of paper to start with, and the hard work starts right away." This Sunday, Tenerife host Cartagena with a 5pm kickoff, and Mandia is in a bullish mood, saying: “I am convinced that if I do my job, then the team will succeed. If I can get inside them and get them to believe, then we will achieve what we want. “Sunday is a tough start, but we are at home and that is vital. I want the fans to cheer for the team. We have a team of very good players and we need the fans to be proud and help us.” He is being smart here. Planned protests have been cancelled, and there has been a major rallying call from the various supporters’
Mandia met by Llorente
groups. The message is simple: “We are all in this together.” Mandia’s appointment is a last roll of the dice for Sporting Director Santiago Llorente. After his failed Arconada Gonzalo experi-
ment, Mandia has to work or he is also fired. “We have made the right appointment,” said Llorente. “I’m certain Mandia will take us where we want to go.” Let’s hope he is right. Finally.
Betty’s hot pot so tasty ALL-CONQUERING Café Rood dominated the Oasis Fm Darts League Finals Night at Bar Nauta, with Betty lifting a remarkable hat-trick of titles. Café Rood were contesting four of the six trophies up for grabs last Friday, and they had a perfect evening by winning all four, thanks mainly to Betty. The Ladies Trebles final opened a night of resounding success, matching Marilyn, Sheena and Anne, of Amigos Bad Girls, against Café Rood’s Conny, Betty and Christine. Sadly, it proved too big a task for the Bad Girls, and the Rood girls earned their first pot of the night with a 3-0 result. The Men’s Trebles final which followed was a much closer affair. Grizzly, Shammy and Daz, from Exiles, played out an exiting final against the Phoenix’s Bubbles, Steve and Ashley. They who got off to a flying start, Ashley hitting a 180 with the first throw! Then, at 2-2 in legs, the under-pressure Exiles lads managed to maintain their form and joyfully claimed the trophy. Betty and Conny returned to the stage to compete for the Ladies Doubles title
Page 46
against Julie and Sue, of the Tavern. The Tavern girls, in their first Finals Night appearance, battled hard but were unable to stop the Rood girls making it two out of two with a 3-0 victory. Next to do battle under the bright lights - and boy, was it hot up there - were the men’s Doubles finalists, which came down to Gary and Wayne, of Bar 180, versus London and Big Al from Nauta Bar. Big Al was in fine form, having already booked his place in the Singles final. And he was ably assisted by London, the pair seeing Nauta through to the title 4-1. By now, Betty’s legs must have been aching, but she managed to drag them back
on stage for her Singles final against Jusi Sue, of Naughty Nautas. Betty is a formidable opponent for anyone, and she proved just too good for Sue, who at least took one leg in a 3-1 defeat, which meant another piece of silverware for the Cafe Rood cabinet. Lastly, but by no means least, the Men’s Singles final saw Big Al climbed the steps to face an old foe in the shape of Luc from, guess where? Yes, Cafe Rood. The crowd were expecting a hotly-contested showdown, and they were not disappointed as Al took the first leg to put the pressure on. Luc then struck back to square things up, but after that it was one-way traffic -
and Big Al was going the wrong way. A mightily-impressive display from our Belgian friend, which included some high scoring and a magnificent 160 check-out, meant that yet another silver pot would be on display in Cafe Rood. Congratulations to all trophy winners, and thanks to all those who helped with the chalking. A great night all round! RESULTS LADIES Trebles Winners: Conny/Betty/Christine (Rood B). Runners up: Marilyn/Sheena/Ann (Amigos Bad Girls) Doubles Winners: Conny/Betty (Rood B) Runners-up: Julie/Sue (Tavern) Singles Winner: Betty (Rood B) Runner-up: Jusi Sue (Naughty Nautas) MEN Trebles Winners: Grizzly/Shammy/Daz (Exiles) Runners-up: Steve/Bubbles/Ashley (Phoenix) Doubles Winners: London/Big Al (Nauta). DAVID PENNY Email: David.penny@canarianweekly.com
Spanish Inquisition - and persecution DAVE PENNY delves into the past history of the Canary Islands and uncovers some tales of horror and persecution IN 1492, a royal edict was issued in Spain by the Reyes Catolicos (Catholic Monarchs), Fernando and Isabella, expelling from Spain, all Jews who failed to convert to Catholicism. Many Jews embraced their new faith (or at least made the appearance of so doing) while others fled the country, leaving property and possessions behind. The Conversos, or New Christians as they were known, openly practised their new faith in public, while at the same time continuing their Jewish practices in private. Many of these Conversos found their way to the Canary Islands, which were then only just coming under the sphere of Spanish influence. And, as a result, an Episcopal Inquisition was set up in 1499. This investigation disclosed the existence of a secret synagogue, and that a large number of secret Jews were practising their old faith. Five years later, a branch of the Inquisition of Andalusia was set up in Las Palmas in 1504. Following numerous denuncias, there followed a series of Autos-de-Fe. These were trials at which individuals were penanced or reconciled, with one in 1507 and another three years later. Those who were sentenced to death were customarily burned at the stake (this was euphemistically known as being “relaxed” (relajado). This continued, and in 1526 eight individuals were “relaxed”, with two being penanced and two being reconciled. Two further Autos were held, in 1530 and 1534, but it was not felt necessary to “relax” anyone on those occasions.
Page 48
This period of persecution seems to have eradicated crypto-Judaism in the islands for a while. However, a fresh wave of Conversos arrived from the peninsular at the beginning of the 17th century.
This coincided with the Anglo-Spanish peace, achieved in 1604, and it sparked a considerable increase in the wine and sugar trade in the islands. These were busi-
nesses of great interest to the New Christians of Lisbon, Bordeaux and Bayonne, as well as the Jews of Amsterdam. These second waves of Jewish immigrants were for
the most part wealthy merchants of a higher social class, compared with the earlier settlers who had been from more humble roots. The numbers were bolstered even further by a new wave of anti-Semitism, which hit Portugal around this period (between 1612 and 1630, the Portuguese Inquisition held no fewer than 47 large Autos de Fe). This new wave, however, were more astute in disguising their true religious beliefs. They had integrated with the native community, being baptised and taking Portuguese and Spanish husbands and wives. Apart from these marriages, there were many Old Christians and free-thinkers seeking new and more open horizons, who converted to Judaism. This increase in numbers prompted fresh activity from the Holy Inquisition, it was in 1625 that a fresh attack was launched against these new immigrants with the publication of a new edict of faith against Judaism. The following year, the then capital city of La Laguna was described as being “full of Jews and heretics” (the heretics being British and Dutch Protestants). The families of Fernan Pinto and Antonio Fonseca were made examples of to varying degrees, ranging from being “relaxed” to being condemned to wear the Sabenito (a penitential garment). The Inquisition relied heavily on denunciations from the general public in order to start investigations of alleged heresy and, with the passing of time, this practice had lost its momentum. The islands’ populations greatly appreciated the roles played by the Jews in reestablishing a very profitable commerce with England and Holland, and were not about to support too much heavyhandedness against them from the church.
Shortly after the peace treaty of 1604, a second accord was reached with Holland in 1609. This had the effect of greatly reducing the coffers of the Inquisition, as it was no longer able to rely on income from goods and ships confiscated from those heretical nations. Also, the inquisitors weren’t able to bring prosecutions with the same frequency as before, and although they still relied on informants, the heretics they were attempting to persecute were not just Spanish Jews. By this time, they included members of the CryptoJewish communities of France and England, as well as members of the open Jewish community of Holland, originally established by New Christians from the Iberian Peninsular. Thus, the number who could be tried and condemned by the tribunals of the Inquisition had greatly reduced, the last of these proceedings being held against Gaspar de Perera in the second half of the 17th century. By this time, it was proving more and more difficult for the Inquisition to find any Jews left to prosecute and, with increasing liberality in northern Europe, the number of Jews in Spain and the islands went down drastically. The local inquisition had to content itself with cases against witchcraft, religious morality and attempting to stop the flow of books on to the islands. As time passed, it became the subject of public ridicule, but it wasn’t until 1813 that it was abolished. This news was greeted with great joy by all. But a few short months later (in true Spanish style), it was reinstated when Fernando VII assumed the throne. Spain had to wait a further seven years before the final abolition of the Inquisition, which was finally relieved of its duties in 1820.
