Connerys ordered to court over a homes deal worth 53m-euros JAMES BOND actor Sean Connery and his wife, Micheline, involved in a multimillion-pound property wrangle, have been summoned to appear in a Marbella court next Friday (15th). They have been told to “declare as charged” in a case dubbed ‘Operation Goldfinger’, involving the sale of their villa on the beach in Marbella and the subsequent construction of 72 luxury apartments on the site Profits of 53 million euros are alleged to have been made in the deal, and money-laundering authorities are said to be involved in the investigation. The local town hall is believed to have lost out on 2.7m euros. Newspaper Diario Sur says that the British Ambassador to Spain has

informed the court of “the wish of the couple to know the details of the judicial procedure, and the crimes of which they have been accused”. The judge has, therefore, ordered that a summary of the proceedings, translated into English, be sent to the defendants at their home in the Bahamas. He has also indicated that if the couple do not appear, “all the legal measures, both under national and international legislation will be used to oblige them to attend”. The instruction judge set civil liability bail for the couple at 3.3m euros last June. Companies linked to the Connerys are alleged to have been involved in the deal. Also charged, among a 20-strong group, are Julián Muñoz, the ex-Mayor of Marbella, and Juan Antonio Roca, the man at the centre of the Malaya corruption case and former Municipal real estate assessor.

Bullfighting is not seen as a ‘protected cultural interest’ BULLFIGHTING in Spain will not be declared “a protected cultural interest”, despite a Partido Popular motion, which was defeated by 12 votes. Pío García Escudero, a PP Senator, speaking for the motion, described the bull-

fighter as “an artist - like a painter, composer, poet or sculptor’. He said the bullfighter had to create his work of art in 20 minutes, without any possibility of correction, and risking his life the whole time. In a speech embracing literary references, he added that bullfighting was part of

the history, art, tradition, sentiment and emotion of Spain, Socialist spokesman Roberto Lertxundi, a known bullfighting supporter, said that his group was voting against the motion as the declaration of being of cultural interest was the domain of the regional administrations.

He also claimed that the PP had done more damage to bullfighting by bringing the motion to the Senate. Meanwhile, the Partido Popular announced it would consider an appeal to the Constitutional Court, against the decision made in the Catalan Parliament earlier this year to ban bullfighting in the region from 2012.

A WORD FROM OUR EDITOR

An international Favourite Clown competition for young designers

Email: editor@canarianweekly.com

That´s how Charlie Chaplin once referred to the late Sir Norman Wisdom. My personal memory is going to see him at the theatre in I think a one man show, and I laughed so hard my stomach hurt, for me he epitomized what makes you laugh. He was like a cheeky monkey, the dialogue, the mannerisms, a very, very funny man who will be missed. Not bad seeing he was born into poverty and stood at 5ft 4in, but his slapstick performances of a bumbling idiot made him a world famous multi-millionaire and knight of the realm. Norman Joseph Wisdom was born in the Marylebone district of London. His parents were Frederick, a chauffeur, and Maud Wisdom (née Targett), a dressmaker who often worked for West End theatres. Wisdom had an elder brother, Frederick Thomas “Fred” Wisdom (13 December 1912 – 1 July 1971). The family resided at 91 Fernhead Road, London W9, where they slept in one room. He appeared in 32 television sitcoms and 19 films. In titles like The Early Bird, The Square Peg and A Stitch

Page 04

in Time, he worked for his nemesis Mr Grimsdale, sparking the catchphrase “Ooo, Mr Grimsdale!” But he quit TV aged 75 in February 1990, saying it was “too smutty”. Bizarrely Sir Norman became a national institution in Albania, where his films were the only western movies shown during the dictatorship of Enver Hoxha. His fame outshone David Beckham’s when he visited the stadium where England were due to play Albania a few years ago. After leaving the Army in 1946, Wisdom made his debut as a professional entertainer at the age of 31 and his rise to the top was phenomenally fast. Initially the straight man to the magician David Nixon, he had already adopted the costume that would remain his trademark: tweed flat cap askew, with peak turned up; a suit at least two sizes too tight; a crumpled collar and a mangled tie. The character that went with this costume—known as “the Gump”—was to dominate Wisdom’s film career as Norman Pitkin. A West End star within two years, he made his TV debut the same year and was soon commanding enormous audiences

The Cabildo de Tenerife, the area of Development, Economy, Trade and Employment and through the Tenerife Moda programme have organized the third event: International Young Design Platform of Tenerife. It is also encouraging all young designers, so they can start their career in the field of fashion design and thus support an industry like textiles and clothing, which has been consolidated as a strong industry and dynamic in our island, “recalls the councillor. Monday in the municipality of Adeje is a local bank holiday and many businesses in municipalities will be using the Monday as a bridging day, thus having a long weekend break. The DGT traffic authority in Spain is forecasting 6.7 million journeys will be taken on the country’s roads this bank holiday weekend, despite the forecasts of poor weather and heavy rain in many areas of the south on Sunday. The DGT special controls will run from 3pm on Friday until Midnight on Tuesday for the El Pilar bank holiday. Busiest traffic is expected on the roads in mainland Spain which lead to the

Valencia and Aragón regions, which are both celebrating their regional fiestas. More than 600 people will be working at the DGT to keep the traffic flowing and 10,000 Tráfico Guardia Civil will be patrolling the roads. The DGT advises travellers to check their route before departure, using the internet, mobile phone, or teletext services, or to check local radio stations. Pilar Festival The Pilar Festival (Fiestas del Pilar) is celebrated every year on the 12th of October. During the week leading up to this official date, Zaragoza comes alive with music, parades, flowers, and theatre in honour of the Virgin of Pilar. The female patron saint of Spain is honoured with an abundance of flowers as the history and culture of Spain is remembered and celebrated. Trails of roses, lillies, orchids, and gladiolus wind their way to the Plaza de Pilar as an offering to the Virgin. The reason for this internationally recognized festival has its origins back in 40 AD when St James the

Apostle came to this area to spread Christianity to the mostly Pagan population. On his journey in Aragonese territory, on the eve of January 2nd, the Virgin Mary is supposed to have appeared to him on a marble pillar and asked him to build a church on the land upon which he was standing. Initially a chapel was built around the pilar followed by ever grander churches over the centuries. Today the magnificent Basilica del Pilar which was designed in 1681 stands on this spot. Major alterations took place in the 18th century and the Basilica’s towers weren’t completed until the 20th century. The pillar (Pilar) on which the Virgin descended is displayed inside the Holy Chapel (Capilla Santa) of the Basilica. This attracts hundreds of pilgrims every day who arrive to kiss a small piece of the pillar which isn’t protected. During this wonderful celebration of culture and history music and dance take to the streets. The music is not bound by one particular kind and you will hear reggae,

jazz, pop, rock, and folk to name but a few. Spontaneous flamenco dancing is common but a distinctive form of dancing that you’re unlikely to have come across is the Jota. This dance can be traced back to the 1600s although it has changed somewhat from its original form. You can join in the street celebrations and learn to dance the jota with the locals. Another novelty is the procession of the giants and big heads (gigantes y cabezudos) in which huge papier mache figures join the carnival on the street and mingle with the crowds. Bull fighting is another aspect of this celebration, because as with all Spanish gatherings, the bull must make his appearance. He is quite a distinguished part of the Spanish history so a celebration without him wouldn’t be quite the same. Plays and theatre are another big part of this celebration often attracting famous actors and actresses who can often be spotted entertaining the crowds. The one act plays are particularly enjoyable.

Ironically the next day Canarian Weekly received a telephone call to say that there was a baby whale stranded in Puerto Colon harbour. The tiny mammal had taken refuge next to pantallon 6 in the port and appeared to be in some discomfort, with a cut at the side of its head. The emergency services and authorities worked together to rescue the small creature and took him away to be rehabilitated. 08 October 2010 - 14 October 2010

Sat-nav is blamed for driver’s death A SATELLITE navigation system proved fatal for a motorist, who drove into a Spanish river after being directed down what he thought was a road. The body of the 37-year-old man was found by Red Cross workers in the La Serena river in Capilla (Badajoz), on Monday morning. He is thought to have ended up there at 11.18pm the previous night. His sat-nav system directed the Peugeot 306 down a road which had

been cut off and turned into a reservoir. Because of the darkness, he obviously couldn’t brake in time, and the car was submerged within minutes. His two Sengalese passengers managed to get out of the vehicle, but only one was able to swim ashore. The other one drowned, as did the driver, still stuck in his car. They were all market traders, returning from a trade fair in Cabeza del Buey (Badajoz).

Graduates are in demand to help resolve the stigma of unemployment HIGH unemployment in Spain can be reduced if universities turn out graduates with the necessary skills. That was the view of Angel Gurria, secretary general of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), who told an economic conference in Madrid on Monday: “The transformation of Spain’s economic model can happen only if the education system adequately trains the work force. He added: “Education is the only long-term solution to put an end to the disgrace of unemployment. Fully 44% of

our university graduates aged 25-29 are in jobs that require less training than what they offer. The unemployment rate has risen steadily, from 7.95% in the second quarter of 2007 to 20.09% in the corresponding months this year, following the global financial crisis. The Labour Ministry, which does not provide an unemployment rate, said the number of jobless claims rose by 48,102 (1.2%) to just over four million in September from the previous month. Gurria also said that Spain’s unemployment rate was especially high among those who had not completed high school. “Measures to reduce the high number of students who

drop out of schooling at the age of 16 must urgently be put in place,” he stressed. “The quality of secondary education is an additional challenge for the economy.” Nearly one-third of Spaniards between 18-24 have not completed high school and are not enrolled in school, which is more than twice the average for the entire 27-nation European Union, according to the OECD. Gurria added: “The most astonishing deficit is the deficit in reading and the understanding of what is read.” He also said the country’s universities must adjust their programmes more efficiently to suit the needs of the labour market.

Employment Minister off CELESTINO CORBACHO, Minister for Employment, has left the department with mixed emotions. He would like to have been the minister at another time,

he said, but admitted it had been particularly difficult to announce the unemployment figures every month. He told journalists that he had learned a lot as a minister - especially to be more careful with language, “because

Madrid is another world”. While Corbacho heads to Cataluña to start campaigning for the Socialists in next year’s regional elections, his replacement should be announced by the Prime Minister next Friday (15th).

The pension-age Reform on hold THE main government parties have failed to come to an agreement over raising the pension age by two years to 67. This has been a bone of contention by striking unions, but parliamentary consensus has been reached to increase the number of working years needed as a base for the calculation of pensions from 15 to 20. The agreement came during a meeting of the crossparty Toledo Commission

Page 08

concerning pensions on Wednesday. The PSOE and the PP agree that the calculation has to be changed, but there is still no concrete proposal on the method. The change will probably be introduced progressively over the coming years. Union’s mutual fight LEGAL action by the UGT union has begun in the National Court against three mutual societies, who have lowered workers’ wages under the Government cuts. The union believes the action has broken the right to collec-

tive negotiation. Bank chief’s defence JUAN María Nin, Director of the La Caixa savings bank, has defended the Spanish economy during a conference at the London School of Economics. He spelled out the difference between the market’s perceptions and the reality of the figures in comparison with other countries. But he also admitted that Spain had made some “terrible mistakes” involving the construction industry, the black economy and unemployment.

Calls to abolish death penalty by Spanish PM ZAPATERO: “The death penalty is a penalty, is a ghost, must be abolished” The Spanish Prime Minister making his statement before the Commission against the Death Penalty at the Moncloa Palace in Madrid last Thursday. The Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, at the International Commission against the Death Penalty, has highlighted the “exemplary record” of its president, Federico Mayor Zaragoza, in the defense of human rights. He has highlighted the

independence of the International Commission for the moral authority of its members, their experience, wisdom, and because they are “masters in the defense of human rights.” In some corners of the

earth there is still the death penalty, for the struggling millions of citizens from all continents, religions and ideologies, based on the full extent of human rights, therefore, there needs to be change.

The target is to achieve a moratorium in 2015 for countries that still maintain in its legal system the death penalty that they should reach its total abolition. This received the full backing of Spain The Prime Minister explained that the date chosen, 2015, due to be met in that year with the Millennium Development Goals and the abolition of the death penalty needs to be on this agenda. The president was convinced that the day of the death penalty ahs gone, in all countries, “humanity will have to become more dignified.”

Liverpool drugs gang are held by in Alicante Police

SPANISH police have scored a huge blow against drug-traffickers by arresting a 12-strong drug-trafficking team from Liverpool, operating out of Alicante. The gang - eight men and four women - were said to have travelled regularly to Britain, smuggling back designer drugs hidden in double-bottom suitcases and vehicles. They distributed them on Ibiza and the eastern Levante coast, which covers the autonomous regions of Valencia and Murcia. During Operation ZUMO, a joint operation between the Guardia Civil and SOCA (UK Serious and Organised Crime Agency), all 12 people were arrested. Police searched three homes in Torrevieja and a further three in Orihuel. In addition, five vehicles, a six-metre boat moored in Torrevieja, precision scales and 53,000 designer-drug Ecstasy pills were seized. And a cannabis plantation was dismantled in the Crevillente area of Alicante. The Liverpool group had

been in contact with another gang, dismantled by the Civil Guard in August during the course of Operation Flecha. An investigation started in May when the police were told about the distribution of the drugs in leisure centres on the Levante coast. The group were put under surveillance and in June, one gang member was arrested, trying to smuggle more than 50,000 designer drug pills, hidden in the doors of a vehicle about to set off from Alicante for Ibiza. The drugs were set to be distributed to other groups based in Ibiza during the summer period. The gang had been making daily visits to discos and leisure centres on the east coast, where they stayed and sold the drugs. They also owned a vehicle in an out-of-the-way place in the Crevillente area of Alicante, and a cannabis plantation equipped with all necessary items (irrigation, electricity, heating, containers, etc.) where more than 100 plants were seized. Right from the start of the operation, the Spanish police were in contact with SOCA, who sent a number of officers to assist the Civil Guard during the investigations.

Michelle Obama is the world’s most powerful woman THE WORLD’S most powerful woman is Michelle Obama, according to an index put together by business magazine Forbes. The wife of President Obama had “given a new generation of girls and women around the world a role model”, the magazine said. The Queen, Britain’s head of state and the head of a commonwealth of some 54 countries, is way down the list of women of influence, in position 41. However, she is top in one way, being the only British national on the list. Forbes put second Irene Rosenfeld, chief executive of Kraft Food and the head of a company that now owns Cadbury’s. Oprah Winfrey, TV star and media mogul is in third place,

below Germany’s top politician, Chancellor Angela Merkel. Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, is in fifth place, two slots about Lady Gaga. According to Forbes, this year’s index was based less on traditional calculations of wealth and position, and more on creative influence and entrepreneurship.

“The women on our list, through their respective realms of power and influence, are shaping many of the agenda-setting conversations of our day, and have become dynamic catalysts for driving meaningful change across the world,” publisher Moira Forbes said. “They have built companies and brands, sometimes by non-traditional means and they have broken through gender barriers in areas of commerce, politics, sports and media and cultural zeitgeist, and thereby affecting the lives of millions, sometimes billions of people.” The list is not universally agreed on, however. “Clearly the editor of Forbes has never stepped out of the US,” says veteran City watcher David Buik, a partner in BGC Partners. “On an objective basis, Angela Merkel, Dilma

Rousseff, the President-elect of Brazil, if she gets elected on October 31, or even Hillary Clinton, would jump ahead of Michelle Obama in my book. “In terms of influence Oprah Winfrey would, sadly, be jockeying for position!” The top 10 most powerful women: 1. Michelle Obama, US first lady 2. Irene Rosenfeld, chief executive, Kraft Foods 3. Oprah Winfrey, media mogul 4. Angela Merkel, German chancellor 5. Hillary Clinton, US secretary of state 6. Indra Nooyi, chief executive, Pepsi 7. Lady Gaga, singer 8. Gail Kelly, chief executive, Westpac 9. Beyonce Knowles, singer and fashion designer 10. Ellen DeGeneres, talk show host

Toxic red sludge has reached River Danube THE TORRENT of toxic red sludge causing devastation in Hungary has now spread into the River Danube. A Hungarian environment official has confirmed the news as the country opens a criminal probe amid fears the spill - which has killed four people - could take a year to clean up. Spokesman Tibor Dobson added that the pH content of the sludge has been reduced to a level unlikely to cause further damage. Frantic efforts had been under way to prevent the contaminated slurry getting into the Danube and potentially affecting half a dozen other nations. The tde of dirt, which is a by-product of aluminium production, is caustic and can prove fatal if swallowed. Hundreds of people had to be evacuated after the gigantic sludge reservoir burst its bank at a metals plant in Ajka, a town 100 miles south west of Budapest, the capital. As well as the four deaths,

three people are still missing and 120 have been injured after the unstoppable torrent inundated homes, swept cars off roads and dumped an estimated 35 million cubic feet of toxic waste on several nearby towns. It is still not known why part of the reservoir failed. Hungarian prime minister, Viktor Orban, has said authorities were caught off guard by the disaster since the plant and reservoir had been inspected only two weeks earlier and no irregularities had been found. But calling it “an unprecedented ecological catastrophe”, he added that he does not believe the cause was natural. He said: “Human error is more than likely. The wall (of the reservior) did not disintegrate in a minute.” Concerns have grown about damage to marine life in the region and beyond. South of Hungary, the 1,775-mile Danube flows through Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Moldova before emptying into the Black Sea.

Tube bosses will axe more than 400 jobs LONDON Underground is to axe 400 office and management jobs and leave a similar number of vacancies unfilled, it was announced today (Thursday) The news was condemned by unions embroiled in a bitter dispute over the loss of 800 ticket office jobs, which has led to a series of Tube strikes and could lead to more disruption next month. On top of the 400 posts being scrapped, a similar number of roles which are currently vacant or filled by temps will be completely axed. Bob Crow, general secretary of the Rail Maritime and Transport union, said the latest rounds of cuts were “savagery”. They come in the same week that thousands of Tube workers staged a second 24hour strike in a long-running row over job cuts. Mike Brown, managing director of London Underground (LU), said: “Like all organisations we continue to face financial pressures and have a duty to be as effective and efficient as we can be. “London Underground is vital to London and the wider UK economy and we must have an organisation fit to deliver our priorities - excel-

lent daily customer services and the delivery of the biggest Tube investment programme in our history. “This must be our focus. No customer-facing or frontline train, station, line control or maintenance roles are part of this review.” Mr Crow said: “This is yet another tranche of job losses even before LU’s wider review is finished and comes ahead of the Government’s spending review announcement later this month. “This is very much the thin end of the wedge and underlines how right we are to challenge the job cuts. “It seems that the mayor is even intent on sacking some of the managers who have helped him to try to break our strikes.” LU said the back-office workers would be axed “as soon as possible” and described the cuts as “necessary changes”. It said in a statement: “LU is reviewing all non-frontline services to ensure the right levels of resources are in place, and to protect the twin priorities of delivering excellent daily customer service and the Tube investment programme, so vital to support the economy and growth of London and the UK as a whole.” Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association (TSSA) assistant general secretary Manuel Cortes said the union was “fuming”.

Drug-ruling joy for sufferers of Alzheimer’s HUNDREDS of thousands of patients with Alzheimer’s could be given treatment after a U-turn by a health watchdog. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) has recommended that three drugs - Aricept, Reminyl and Exelon - can be prescribed on the NHS to patients in the early stages of the disease. Three years ago it controversially restricted the drugs to those with moderate symptoms, forcing doctors to wait until patients got worse before starting treatment. It even went to court to defend its position. But in draft recommendations Nice now says the drugs are cost-effective. Chief executive Sir Andrew Dillon said: “I do understand that patients and those who care for them will be frustrated that we weren’t able to make this recommendation in the guidance that went out in 2007. “But of course, it is important to remember that these drugs don’t stop the progression through the mild and the moderate and the severe stages of the disease. They provide a temporary reprieve.

“So as they moved into the moderate stages of the disease they would have been able to get access to these drugs.” The drugs cost around £2.80 a day. They are effective in around half of patients with mild symptoms, stabilising everyday function by around six months. The Alzheimer’s Society campaigned for better access to treatment. Research manager Dr Anne

Corbett said: “A lot of people have said that the fog has lifted from their brain, they’re able to think a bit clearer and they are just able to go about their independent lives. “So things like getting dressed, brushing their teeth, and playing with their grandchildren are easier things that we take for granted. But you just can’t put a price on things like that.” Around 465,000 people in

Britain have Alzheimer’s. Another 62,000 develop the disease each year. Ann Johnson was prescribed Reminyl four years ago after being diagnosed with moderate Alzheimer’s. The drug has improved her memory and helped with everyday tasks. She said the U-turn by Nice was welcome, but overdue. “I have always worried that people in the early stages, who have no access to drugs, have to live with their symptoms,” she said. “If they can now become alert again, and if their symptoms can be contained or stopped from getting worse, that gives them their quality of life back.” Care services minister Paul Burstow said: “This news will be welcomed by families up and down the country. “For drugs like this to be used effectively, people need to be diagnosed early. It’s not acceptable that twothirds of people with dementia never get a diagnosis.” Nice has also recommended the drug Ebixa for patients with severe symptoms, such as aggression. Currently many of these patients are given anti-psychotic drugs to sedate them - something which has been widely condemned as a “chemical cosh”.

Barrister Mark Saunders was ‘lawfully shot dead’ SHOTS that killed barrister Mark Saunders were lawfully fired by police during an armed siege at his Chelsea home in May 2008, an inquest has ruled. The stand-off was triggered when the 32-year-old returned to his Markham Square home in a drunken state and fired a shotgun through the window. A jury at Westminster Coroner’s Court ruled

Page 12

Scotland Yard marksmen had acted in a lawful, proportionate and reasonable manner at the conclusion of a two-and-half-week inquest. The jury said it was not sure Mr Saunders “deliberately and consciously” committed ‘suicide by cop’ by using his shotgun to provoke police to shoot him. The hearing was told the gunman said he expected to die several times during the evening but that he was extremely drunk and may have been in a fantasy world.

The jury said more detailed consideration should have been given by police commanders at an early stage in the siege to using his wife Elizabeth or friend Michael Bradley to defuse the confrontation. Both his wife and Mr Bradley asked to speak to the gunman, who also wanted to contact them, but they were told it was too dangerous and to switch off their mobile phones. This was despite the fact that Mr Saunders called Mr Bradley at about 7pm. Mrs Saunders later found

he had sent her a blank text message but her phone was off. The jury found insufficient weight was given after Mr Saunders fired his shotgun through his window at 9.09pm to the fact that he was a vulnerable alcoholic. But it added that this did not make a contribution to his death. In a legal ruling that can now be revealed, Coroner Dr Paul Knapman said there was not enough evidence to prove unlawful killing and did not give the jury the option.

Eurostar unveils faster train fleet at cost of £700m EUROSTAR is buying a fleet of new 200mph trains in a deal worth £700m. The company, which operates high-speed services to Paris and Brussels from London’s St Pancras Station, has ordered 10 German-built trains that can each carry 900 passengers. It said London to Paris journey times would be reduced to just over two hours as existing trains only reach speeds close to 190mph. Analysts said the decision to go with German company Siemens will have angered the French government, which had pressed for the contract to be awarded to French company Alstom. But Eurostar said the decision had been made in the best interests of customers. The new e320 models will

Page 14

have 20% more capacity than existing trains, which carry 750 people. Existing trains are also being overhauled and will be able to run on the highspeed network across Europe. The announcement was welcomed by Transport Secretary Philip Hammond, who earlier this week announced further details of the multi-billion-pound UK high-speed rail network. Eurostar chief executive Nicolas Petrovic said: “Over the last 16 years Eurostar has revolutionised travel between London, Paris and Brussels but our sights are now set on expanding our business across Europe.” Snow getting into the works of trains caused a number of breakdowns of Eurostar services last Christmas, with hundreds of passengers stuck in the tunnel for many hours.

Freedom in sight: Crane in place to save Chile miners LARGE pieces of a crane that will be used to winch 33 trapped Chilean miners to safety are in place - as hopes increase the men could be free as early as next week. After a day when preparations to extract the stricken group moved more swiftly than anticipated, relatives held a candlelit vigil at the San Jose mine. The parts of the red crane were followed by another lorry with large boxes containing the Navy-designed rescue capsule, nicknamed the Phoenix. A 16-person specialist rescue team - who will bring the men to the surface - has also arrived at the site, near the town of Copiapo, 800km north of Santiago.

Made up of medics, mining experts and firefighters, teams of six will work shifts around the clock during the rescue. Four will remain on the surface, while two will join the miners underground to make sure they are comfortable in

the narrow cage for the 20minute, 2,300ft trip to freedom. But first they have to drill a bore wide enough to allow the cage to move up and down freely. Officials said the drilling crew is making fast progress,

burrowing 53m in 16 hours to bring them within 100m of a chamber the miners can access. Of the three test drills grinding through the rock, the Schramm T-130 - or Plan B - is performing the best. With the bore created, rescuers will then assess whether the sides are smooth enough for the capsule, or whether it should be lined with metal casing. “Our first choice is to put the casing in place,” said Rene Aguilar - one of the operation’s organisers - even though that could delay the rescue by several days. Rumours are crackling around the relatives’ camp as to when the rescue will begin. An optimistic Maria Segovia said: “We try to pass the time happy and with hope and thinking that we are one day closer at the end of each day.”

World News TESTS HAVE been being carried out on the Commonwealth Games swimming pools in Delhi after a number of athletes were struck down with a stomach virus. Up to 20 swimmers from the England and Australian teams have fallen ill and it is thought the quality of water at the aquatic centre could be to blame. About 20% of the England swimming squad - about eight competitors, including Rebecca Adlington and Fran Halsall - were affected. On Thursday, Halsall wrote on Twitter: “Tummy still not fab this am, very very hard to get out of bed. “I hope the piece of bread I had for tea gets me through the heats.” An Australian swim team spokesman said 12 of their athletes were also suffering stomach problems. One Australian competitor has returned home, while two others had to pull out of their Thursday heats. England team spokesman Caroline Searle indicated other members of their delegation have suffered a short sickness. “We have 541 athletes and officials in Delhi and over the

It’s a matter we have to deal with the greatest of urgency.” On Wednesday, Adlington and Halsall both said they had been feeling unwell. Halsall went on to win

Interest rates held at an historic 0.5% THE BANK of England has held interest rates at the historic low of 0.5%. The scale of the bank’s quantitative easing programme remains unchanged. Members of the Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) were under pressure to launch another phase of quantitative easing (QE) pumping money into the economy - but the scale of the £200bn programme was unchanged. The nine-strong MPC was widely expected to resist the pleas this month until a clearer picture emerges on the economy. Its decision was in the spotlight after Japan this week cut its interest rates to virtually zero and pumped more cash into the economy. Support for more QE has been increasing within the MPC itself. One member, Adam Posen, recently warned of a poten-

Page 16

tial Japan-style “lost decade” of stagnant growth if further moves are not made. David Kern, of the British Chambers of Commerce, said: “The decision to leave interest rates and the quantitative easing programme unchanged this month is not surprising. “We still believe there are strong arguments for injecting additional QE, with VAT due to increase to 20% over the next few months and the fiscal austerity programme to be implemented more forcefully. “But, with the Comprehensive Spending Review imminent, and a new Inflation Report due in November, we understand the MPC’s wish to wait before acting.” Ian McCafferty, from the Confederation of British Industry, said: “The MPC’s decision to maintain its current stance was widely anticipated, and it is likely to keep things on hold a little longer. “The interesting question

is what will happen as we move into 2011.” Lee Hopley, chief economist at the Engineering Employers’ Federation, said holding the rate was the “right course of action”. He said: “With inflation persistently above target and the likelihood of a slower pace of growth in the second half of the year, the economy still faces risks on two fronts and the outcome from recent MPC meetings suggests that concerns on both sides have increased. “However, while the economy is still showing signs that recovery remains on track, another round of QE is unwarranted.” Following the decision not to launch a new phase of QE, the pound hit an eight-month high against the dollar. One pound is now worth just over $1.60 for the first time since February. Before the decision there had been speculation that a new round of QE would weaken sterling.

Family trio in double murder case arrested TWO BROTHERS and their sister have been arrested in connection with the double murder of two men whose bodies were found at a flat in Burnley. Their mother, who died in mysterious circumstances last month, was the partner of one of the victims. It is understood the three arrested are Kenny Howson, 25, Lee Howson, 18, and Krystal Howson, 23. They were detained in Burnley, Lancashire.

A 30-year-old man has also been arrested on suspicion of murder. Police discovered the bodies of James Atkinson and Neil Gilmore on Tuesday afternoon after they were called to Mr Gilmore’s ground-floor flat. Pam Brown, the mother of the three siblings, lived with Mr Atkinson nearby before her death on September 7th. The suspects are children from a previous marriage. A separate investigation is under way into the death of Mrs Brown. The 43-year-old died in Blackburn Royal Hospital just

three days after the death of her father. An inquest into her death was opened and adjourned last month as toxicology tests were ordered. Her partner, Mr Atkinson had moved in with Mr Gilmore after an arson attack at his home last month. Detective Superintendent Neil Hunter, leading the murder inquiry, said: “These were two violent attacks on both males who suffered head injuries. “Our next step is to confirm the identity of the victims and establish what motive or grudge there would be to kill them.”

The public final salary pensions ‘should end’

A GOVERNMENT-commissioned report has called for an end to final salary pensions for the public sector, setting ministers on a collision course with the unions. The former Labour Work and Pensions Secretary Lord Hutton was asked by Chancellor George Osborne to investigate where savings can be made on the pension bill for public servants. Under his plans teachers, firefighters and NHS workers would be forced to pay more for smaller pensions - and the retirement age would be increased to 66 by 2026. The unions have described it as an “attack” on public sector workers and their retirement plans. General secretary of Unison, the largest public sector union, Dave Prentis said: “We believe this attack on our pension schemes is an ideological attack rather than something necessitat-

ed by dealing with the deficit.” Bob Crow, general secretary of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union, said: “This attack on the people who make this country tick will spark a furious backlash and will drive millions on to the streets in French-style protests to stop the great pensions robbery.” The civil service union Prospect’s general secretary Paul Noon said: “Civil servants have also been subjected to a recruitment embargo, job cuts and attacks on their terms and conditions. “They are in no mood to accept unfair and unwarranted attacks on their pension scheme.” And Christine Blower, general secretary of the National Union of Teachers, said: “At a time when public sector pay is being frozen, any further attack on teachers’ pay is a grave problem. “It risks driving teachers, particularly those at the beginning of their careers, away from the profession.”

08 October 2010 - 14 October 2010

But Mr Osborne described it as an “impressive and substantial report”. “I hope now we can reach a consensus across our society on public sector pension provision which is decent, generous, gives people dignity in retirement but is also affordable for the taxpayer,” he said. He added that the Government’s official response would be included in the Comprehensive Spending Review on October 20th. Lord Hutton said he did not want to see “good, decent people” facing poverty in retirement. But he stressed that the problem could not be “buried” any longer because of the problems being stored up. He said he would consider a range of alternatives in his final report, including a career average scheme, which means pensions are based on a worker’s average pay during their career, rather than their salary immediately before they retire

Outrage as tree accident sparks cull of conkers A COUNCIL’S decision to remove all the conkers from a chestnut tree after a branch fell and fractured a four-year-old girl’s skull has been branded “madness”. Katie Roden had to have surgery after a metre-long branch thrown into the tree to dislodge the traditional playground favourites crashed down and split her head open as she rode her bike in Nottingham. Having been told their daughter was lucky it did not enter her brain and kill her, Katie’s parents complained to the city council about the dangers the tree posed. In response, workers have been sent out with a cherrypicker to remove all the conkers from the branches and put them on the ground 16 months after the accident. The move is designed to remove the temptation for children to try and knock them loose, but outraged local residents have claimed it is health and safety gone mad. In an online forum, one said: “This is absolutely pathetic. “I was walking down the road and tripped on a banana skin - I demand the council ban all bananas from our county to make sure I never

again have to suffer the pain of a sore bum.” Another added: “This madness must stop. This is why our council tax is so high.” Defending her daughter, Tracey Roden said: “Katie didn’t ask that the conkers be removed, in fact we knew nothing about this until a neighbour told us. “It’s amazing how they worry 16 whole months after the incident.” A spokesman for the council has said it was not its intention to “spoil anyone’s fun” and the decision was made to “avoid the possibility of further injuries”. With the tree being on a main road and close to a school, he added: “It’s a solution to a particular problem in this location and not something we plan to do anywhere else.”

‘Bullied’ schoolgirl dies in dad’s arms A 12-year-old girl collapsed and died in her father’s arms after apparently suffering months of bullying. Holly Stuckey, of Bridgend, South Wales, who suffered from asthma, died after coming home from Maesteg Comprehensive School complaining of chest pains. While her death is not being treated as suspicious, police are looking at the circumstances surrounding it. After she died, Holly’s parents, Clive and Lee, found hidden letters written by their daughter, giving details of months of misery. Her father, a care worker, passed copies of the letters to police with the names of 13 children he claims were involved in her torment. Keith Edwards, chairman of school governors, said police have “categorically” ruled out bullying as a factor in Holly’s death. “Obviously, these people are really, really hurting. It is such a tragic thing to happen to a 12-year-old girl. We have the

Page 18

New beginnings for artist Josie

greatest of sympathy for them,” he said. “As a school, bullying was never something flagged up to us. It is impossible to react to something that you do not know about.” He described Holly as a “lovely, lovely child” whose death had upset everyone at the school. “But the police have said that there is no link to bullying in any shape or form. They have looked at the letters. I looked at one of them myself yesterday morning.” He said the letter he had seen seemed like “quite a morose song” and songwriting was something for which Holly was known to have a talent. He added: “Of course, bullying does happen in all schools. Children can be very cruel, unfortunately. “But it can often take place outside the school, going and coming, and that is not something we can ever see. “But this is such an unbelievable tragedy.”

The 23-year-old was the victim of a hammer attack 14 years ago by Michael Stone, who killed her mother, Dr Lin Russell, 45, and six-year-old sister Megan. Now Josie, who specialises in textiles and mixed media, has been putting on a show of her work at an exhibition at Plas Newydd on Anglesey. The pictures, which include landscapes of North Wales, are on sale for up to £200. Writing on her website, the artist does not mention the horror of her past but speaks enthusiastically of her love of art. She said: “My deep-rooted passion for art and design began when I was very young, and carries on to the present day. “In order to define and improve upon the early enthusiasm I felt for arts and crafts as a child, I studied hard to successfully

achieve a BA in Graphic Design. When I am not working on art and craft projects I can usually be found outdoors - be that in my garden, or else walking through the beautiful hills of the Snowdonia National Park.” She now plans to travel around North Wales, where she lives and works, showing

her work at craft fairs. Josie was walking home from school in Chillenden, near Canterbury, Kent, in July 1996 when Stone set upon her mother and sister. Then nine, Josie was also attacked and suffered massive head injuries. She was found unconscious next to the bodies of her mother, sister and fami-

ly dog, Lucy. After the attack, she was unable to speak but battled back to health with the support of her father, Shaun, and has been able to rebuild her life. Stone is currently serving life for the murders and will not be considered for release until 2031 at the earliest.

X Factor - Gamu is ordered to leave UK FORMER X Factor hopeful Gamu Nhengu, who was booted out of the show despite being a huge hit with fans, is facing deportation. The family of the 18-yearold singer has had its application to remain in the UK rejected. They have been told to leave the country voluntarily or face being deported back to their native Zimbabwe. Gamu came to Britain five years ago and was allowed to stay while her mother, Nokuthula Ngazana, completed her university studies but the visa has now run out. A UK Border Agency spokesman said: “Ms Ngazana’s application (for residency) did not meet all of the conditions for approval. “Her family, who had applied as her dependants, were

therefore also refused. “Where people are found to have no right to remain in the UK we expect them to leave voluntarily.” Her mother, Nokutula Ngazana, however said she had had no official contact

from Whitehall officials. “I don’t know anything about this. All I know is what I am being told by the media,” she said. Gamu remained at home with her family at Tillicoutry in Central Scotland but didn’t

respond to questions from reporters. Asked if she would be performing on this weekend’s X Factor live show as a ‘wild card’ entry, her mother replied: “No, I don’t know anything about that.” Gamu was axed from X Factor when judge Cheryl Cole left her out of the final group of 12 contestants. A Home Office spokesman said the decision to axe the student was the business of the show. He could not say whether Cole had come to her conclusion after talks between immigration officials and programme bosses. Since Gamu was kicked off the show, more than 200,000 people have signed up to a Facebook page called Gamu Should Have Got Through, protesting at the decision. A small crowd of supporters have gathered outside Gamu’s home.

Foster mums are wanted for these deserted puppies

Golfing Lions have charities at heart SAN MIGUEL Lions Club staged a superb charity golf tournament at the Adeje course on Sunday, to raise funds for the children’s charities they support.

AKTIONTIER, the dog sanctuary based in Granadilla, has sent out an urgent to plea this week for foster mums to help look after these little pups, who need feeding every four hours. There are eight in all, so please contact Marion, at Accion del Sol (922 778 630) if you can help take care of the poor little mites. On a happier note, some of the refuge dogs joined in the Fitness Club last Thursday and had a whale of a time. Along with their owners, or helpers, they took part in relay races, power-walking, bending, jumping through hoops plus (not for doggies) lifting light arm weights. The whole gang enjoyed themselves so much, humans and dogs alike, and lots more Second shop imminent Our second shop is about ready to open its doors. We just need to get a couple of bits of paper and we’re there! It is situated in San Eugenio, opposite La Niña Hotel, near Amanda’s Bar, and we hope to target the tourist market with books, beach items and other holiday essentials. We still need racking and shelving, however, so please call Debbie on the number below if you can help. We also need volunteers to work in both the new shop and our shop in Silencio. If you can spare a few hours a week, are reliable, trustworthy and love dogs, then, please call Debbie. Thank you. Live Arico Flight Line Anyone booking flights to and from the UK with the

calories were burned off. In fact, the evening proved so popular that Aktiontier and Canarian Weekly fitness expert Danni Byrne, who run the club jointly, have been asked to hold it on a weekly basis. That led to a walk last night (Thursday), from behind the Conquistador Hotel along the seafront. And on Thursday (14th Oct), the club reconvenes behind the Adeje Grand Hotel at 6pm. Ationtier has lots of dogs who would love to come out to play, and if there’s anyone out there without a dog who would like to accompany one, please contact Karen (687 905 511) or Danni (619 008 035) for more information. Don’t forget. Aktiontier is staging a special Oktoberfest on Sunday week (17th Oct) at its Accion del Sol headquarters, when an afternoon of fun and is guaranteed, at least for the visitors!

There was also a donation to the Help For Heroes charity, which supports the soldiers in Afghanistan. That came as a result of the theft of a collection box with funds raised through the sale of HFH badges. “It was stolen from our shop in Silencio and we felt bad about the theft,” said club secretary Ralph Solomon. “Stealing charity boxes? That’s as low as it gets, so at our last meeting, we decided to replace the money. It wasn’t a lot, but every bit helps.” Mick McQuade won the event, from Jan Brockwell, with Jim Fenner in third position. As for the golf, it was organised by Keith Norman and sponsored mainly by Tate Properties, in Los Cristianos, plus Iceland and The Golf Shop. JOE ‘IN MY OPINION’ FERGUSON Weekly Update Email: joe.ferguson@canarianweekly.com

WHAT on earth is happening in the world? The US and most of Europe are on the look-out for terrorist activity, sportsmen and woman are competing in the Commonwealth Games and the genius that was Norman Wisdom is dead. Yet the only thing on everyone’s lips has been the whole X Factor debacle of judge Cheryl Cole making the wrong decision in leaving out a young girl called Gamu. Just for those who have been on Neptune for the last few weeks, Gamu was one of the first contestants on the show. As soon as we all heard her sing, it was “WOW!” But it did not take long to realise that her voice was made to sound better electronically. This was excused by Simon Cowell as he said it was used last year simply to enhance the TV output. Why? Just let us hear it raw and natural, as the audience did. Before the second show, the producers promised that this effect would no longer be used. Fast-forward to last Sunday and the judges picked their

Page 36

Knickers in a twist! three to sing on the live shows, starting this weekend. Cheryl had the girls and, in my household, we picked the three she would favour to win the show. Rebecca - YES. Cher - YES. And Gamu - NO! Watching the show as a fan, I was shocked, but that lasted all of five seconds. Katie was picked instead and that’s it. Let’s get on with the weekly live shows that will take us up to Christmas. Monday morning when I woke up and switched the TV, on I thought I had arrived in some kind of bizzaro world. Gamugate had begun. Every conceivable thought on why this girl was not picked went into overdrive. Let’s look at a few of these conspiracies. Racism was shouted out loudly by every black group of internet freaks all over the UK. Why is I that the racist card is used only when the individual happens to be black? The many white, black

and Asian singers right down to the judges’ pickings just cried and said: “Okay, thanks for the chance.” Then the bit of bad press Cheryl was involved with in 2003 when it was alleged she uttered racist remarks to a female toilet attendant. Cheryl was charged with assault, we all saw the pictures, but the racist remarks were dropped by the lady, who took her to court. Cheryl’s ex-husband, anyone? And her new best friend, Will I Am (c’mon, it’s Billy) from the Black Eyed Peas? But this is now being used as a way of Cheryl covering up what she really thinks. Please, that is just ridiculous. But that has not stopped the many people who live for a story like this to break, and then watch with a smile on their faces as the wheels start to roll. But it has taken a sinister turn now, with Cheryl receiving death

threats, and the story that the show organisers knew Gamu was about to be deported? How did they know? It was only this week that the story broke that the girl’s whole family must leave the UK or be thrown out by government officials. Simon Cowell might be powerful, but getting into confidential government files is something even he cannot do. It was all simply a coincidence and nothing more. At the time of writing, I am watching news footage showing the hundreds of people outside Gamu’s house wanting her to stay. They all seem to be saying the same thing: “If she is a good citizen, why deport her?” I can answer that very easily: because her mother broke the law, stayed in the UK illegally and, allegedly, claimed thousands on benefits to which she was not entitled. For me, Cheryl knows what she wants from her girls. They

MUST look like pop stars. That is the one thing that she and Simon do well. When telling Gamu she just wanted someone who looked the part, she was telling the truth. Katie, who was picked, has that very look. Unlike Louis Walsh, who hasn’t a hope with one of his picks. Her name is Mary and, I mean no disrespect, not only is she annoying, she looks no more like a pop star than I do. Don’t say, “What about Susan Boyle”? Different show, different audience. As much as we all love X Factor, it is on record that the majority who vote are girls aged 14 - 18. And Louis will always pick an Irish singer for his category. Cheryl’s first winner was Alexandra Burke, who looks the part and – surprise, surprise she is beautiful black woman! Not that this will stop what seems to be hatred against one woman who works on a TV show which is all about

entertainment and hype. Simon Cowell will be loving all of this, and not only because the live TV shows start tomorrow night (Saturday). He takes the show to America next year and has had more free publicity than he could ever have wished for. Especially with the surprise “twist” this weekend which, had Gamu been allowed to stay in the country, she would have been involved in. For the first time in its history, the X Factor is a 2½-hour show and that’s because a wild card will be introduced in each category. And you, the audience, can pick one act, or one act for each judge’s line-up to join the show. I see the new Facebook page, calling on viewers never to watch the X Factor again, has reached over a million fans. I bet you they will be watching every Saturday. The show will get what it wants, which will be a record audience. It amazes me how easily manipulated the viewers can be. The emotion over someone they have never met is getting out of control.

Homes cooking with gas made from sewage HOUSEHOLDERS are cooking and heating their homes with gas made from sewage for the first time in the UK. Human waste is being turned into “green” fuel at a plant in Didcot, Oxfordshire, which can supply up to 200 homes. There are plans to roll out the scheme across the country as the UK strives to meet EU targets of providing 15% of all energy from rewnewable sources by 2020. The £2.5m scheme in Oxfordshire – a joint effort between British Gas, Thames Water and Scotia Gas Networks – sees sewage pumped to the plant from homes. Then sludge, the solid part of the waste, is treated to produce a renewable gas known as biomethane or biogas. This is a historic day for the

companies involved, for energy from waste technologies, and for progress to increase the amount of renewable energy in the UK. The gas is cleaned before being fed back into the grid to supply homes. The entire process, from flush to cooker or boiler, takes about 20 days. A similar system is already used to create renewable electricity from sewage, where the gas is burned to produce power. But this is the first time biogas has been pumped directly into the grid for use in homes. Energy and Climate Change Secretary Chris Huhne said: “This is a historic day for the companies involved, for energy from waste technologies, and for progress to increase the amount of renewable energy in the UK.” Martin Baggs, chief executive of Thames Water, said the scheme was “a sign of what is to come”.

How to create a new kitchen, and without spending a fortune

IF YOU’VE ever had a new kitchen or bathroom fitted, you will know only too well just what an upheaval it causes. There are plumbers, electricians, joiners and unit-fitters all vying for space in which to perform their miracles. And, no doubt, it costs a bomb! Yet it needn’t be such an ordeal, and it needn’t be such an expense at all, given

Page 38

some clever updates and careful thought into what you want. Have a good think about your kitchen, for starters, and work out whether you actually need new units. Of course, you need to be happy with the layout for starters, and you must also ensure the condition and the colour suits your taste. If so, smarten up the doors and drawers with new handles. They are not expensive and you will be surprised at how they can transform the place. Long, chrome handles are really in fashion right now, but wooden knobs are just as attractive in the right setting. If, however, the doors have become a bit shabby, you can always cover them with a purpose-made paint to give them a high-gloss finish. But remember, the doors will need to white, or a neutral colour, for the paint to be effective. If the doors are in good nick, you can always be a bit creative by sticking on borders and patterns. You can’t go far wrong because if you are unsure of the effect, peel off the strips and start again.

Also, if your doors and drawers are falling apart, there is still no need to replace the entire units, as long as the carcases are sound. Shop around and you’ll find replacement fronts to fit the bill. All the major retailers stock them now. And, as all the measurements are standard metric sizes these days, you can’t possibly buy the wrong size! Another bright idea, possibly, is to buy two colours for the fronts of drawers and alternate them in the kitchen. Well, it’s a thought, anyway. You can even replace a worn worktop, with an offthe shelf unit, and though you’ll probably be left with a raggedy edge against the wall tiles, this problem can be overcome easily with a matching laminate upstand, which sits on the worktop. Another idea on this theme is to cover old tiles with a laminate splashback - and you don’t have to remove the tiles. So, having fitted your new kitchen, how about some bright new, washable wallpaper to lift the room still further, and give it the appear-

ance of a complete transformation. As for what goes on behind closed kitchen doors, you can have storage and spacesaving features designed into them to avoid clutter. It is an odd kitchen feature that many of them are full of clutter you are reluctant to ditch. It’s a case of “better not get rid of that old saucepan or bowl because I might need it some day”. Yet you just know in your heart that particular day will never come. So ditch it, and all the other bits and pieces you will never need. And if you do happen to want an item that’s been thrown away, buy a new one because .kitchenware is so cheap these days. So, you are gradually uncluttering the place, and to make life even easier in the room where you spend a fair bit of time, get an organiser for under the sink (invariably, the messiest area of all) and other storage baskets for various cupboards. Before you know it, your friends will be seeking your advice (and labour, no doubt) as they set about transforming their own kitchens.

Veggie mates

Find a space ...any space THE TREND is very much now to grow your own, even if you have only a window box there’ll be a plant that you can successfully cultivate. Containers make a good place to start, you can literally use anything – wooden boxes, hessian sacks, tins or even shopping bags. The only thing that you need to bear in mind is the size of the plant that you want to grow. For example if you want to grow potatoes and carrots they need alot of soil as they grow deep down, tomatoes and courgettes for instance have a large root base, small pots are ideal for herbs and peas and beans need space above

as they grow tall. Use good quality compost; it’s cheaper to raise your own plants from seed if you don’t have any seed trays you can use old yoghurt pots or butter containers. If the thought of planting seeds is too much for you then you can opt to purchase plug plants. Water your plants regularly, morning and night. You have an option to feed your young plants with specialised feed to encourage growth, but if you want to remain organic then best not use anything. To entice your plants to flower you will need some help from the insect population – so plant sunflowers, marigolds, honeysuckle, rosemary, lavender, thyme and mint to encourage bees and other pollinating insects.

Downpour can give kids such a green vision CBEEBIES gets children to ‘grow through gardening’ in Veggie Mates. CBeebies is urging two to four year olds to pull on their wellies, pick up a trowel and learn some important life lessons through the wonder of gardening in Veggie Mates (26x15 minutes), a brand new live action and puppet series going into production now for transmission in early 2011. Set in a wonderful, fertile allotment run by the greenfingered Mr Bloom (newcomer Ben Faulks), Veggie Mates combines live action, puppets and lively music to show how young children can learn from the experience of nurturing plants and vegetables. In each episode a team of young helpers, or ‘tiddlers’, come to the allotment to help Mr Bloom tend his

plants and produce. But when they add leaves and clippings to his wondrous homemade ‘compostarium’ something rather amazing happens to his greenhouse. For inside are a group of lively young vegetable puppets – the Veggie Mates – who the children can play with, teach and care for. There’s Colin the Runner Bean, an active young lad who’s always first with the wrong answer; Margaret the Cabbage, shy but fun with her heart in the right place; bossy Joan the Fennel who likes to mother the other young vegetables; Raymond the Butternut Squash who’s a bit cumbersome and always saying sorry; Sebastian the Aubergine who likes to sum up the day’s activities with a song; and the Wee MacGregors – a group of mischievous radishes who

08 October 2010 - 14 October 2010

cause havoc at every turn. From learning about the importance of drinking water when it’s hot and sunny to remembering that we’re all good at different things, Veggie Mates explores a variety of themes to help children understand the world around them. And they even get to pick up some simple gardening tips along the way! “The core principle of Veggie Mates is the theme of nurture,” explains executive producer Alison Stewart. “The programme aims to mirror young children’s experiences through the metaphor of growing and looking after vegetables in a nursery. And if we can encourage children to become green-fingered along the way then all the better!” Veggie Mates is a CBeebies production made in BBC

Manchester. The production team is currently recruiting children for the show from nurseries and pre-schools in the North West area. The producer is Jon Hancock and the executive producer Alison Stewart. CBeebies is dedicated to delighting and surprising its young audience and it remains the UK’s most watched and loved channel for the under 6s, with almost half of the target audience tuning in each week (parents and carers with children aged 0-3 and 4-6 year olds in digital homes). The CBeebies website attracts more than 800,000 unique users a week, peaking at over 1 million unique users in February last year, and last May saw the launch of the specially designed, child-friendly CBeebies iPlayer.

ADOPTING a “Green Living” lifestyle obviously requires a lot of changes for adults, but for children it should be a lot easier. Kids pick up things so quickly, and by learning the ways of greener living, they should have a big impact on the environment in years to come. Gardening is a fun way to teach them to appreciate ecological concepts, and their responsibilities and roles in our environment’s condition. What you choose to plant and nurture in your garden can help make such a difference, so here is a simple, basic activity you can do with your children to inspire them to start caring for our environment. It seems such a menial task, but collecting rainwa-

ter is so beneficial to the garden. Rainwater is proven to be more beneficial to your plant’s growth than tapwater, so a rainfall storage system has great advantages for the environment, and has, of course, wonderful benefits for your plants. Rain barrels can provide you with a sufficient amount of water to use for your lawn, gardens and potted plants. In the UK especially, you will have been able to take advantage of the weather to start a storage system. The collection method is simple. Place a barrel beneath your roof’s downspout and start collecting just like that! Using a cover with holes in it will help keep the debris out. Also, keep in mind that if you are reusing barrels, they should not have been previously used to store chemicals, solvents or oils.

DEAR CHRISTINE Your resident Agony Aunt Email: agony.aunt@canarianweekly.com

Getting to know you WE all talk, because communication is how we get to know how our friends and family feel, That’s also how we, as stylists, find out about you. Not only do we want to keep you happy as a client, but we also want to build a relationship with you, too. We discus your lifestyle, your dress sense, make-up even your occupation - and anything else to really help us find the perfect style for you. Okay, your first visit to a salon might not always have you leaving 100% happy. It’s a learning process. We need feedback on what we have done - the cut, the colour, the style -because your opinions count. But please, if things aren’t to your liking, or you’re not happy with any service carried out, then you must let us know. Any salon worth its salt will gladly put right anything you’re not satisfied with. After all, it’s our reputation that we need to consider as well. If things aren’t right after a service in the salon, that is your chance to say something. Don’t be afraid to speak out when the stylist asks: “Is everything all right for you?” If your fringe is still a little long, or your colour isn’t the shade you thought it would be, then speak out. We would rather hear it now than later. Okay, sometimes it’s not until you do your hair yourself that you think, “I need a few more layers”, or “I wish I had gone a little lighter/darker”. We aren’t monsters but sensi-

Page 40

tive stylists, who get upset if you’re upset. We speak to you with respect and politeness, (most of us), so please bear this in mind when making a statement or complaint. Hairdressers aren’t going to want to help you if you start off a complaint by shouting, being aggressive or even insulting us. If you’re upset, or something isn’t right, call the salon or pop back in, but don’t make a scene because it only makes it worse for you and them. Explain what you wanted and what you don’t like, and ask if there’s anything that can be done. It’s very rare that things can’t be changed. But if you charge into a phone call, raging like a bull, hurling insults and generally being rude, then don’t expect much help. Most salons will gladly change what you don’t like free of charge (remembering

that if it’s your fault, such as you changing your mind, then a charge will be made). As the law stands, you have to give the salon a chance to put right or modify anything you’re not happy with. After this, and you’re still not happy, you may ask for “El Libro de Vistas”. This, roughly, is a complaints book which will be dealt with by the Spanish version of the British Consumer Rights Council here in Santa Cruz. I’m sure, before anything gets to this stage, that the salon will do whatever it takes to rectify the problem. As I’ve already said, nothing is irreparable. Ways to avoid situations like this are: get to know your stylist, and do ask for recommendations from friends, etc. Also, remain faithful to your salon and don’t wander off if you see a “special offer” elsewhere, because it nearly always ends in tears. So, to sum things up, and to keep you “salon happy”, ask for recommendations. Visit your new salon for a consultation. Try to build up a rapport with your stylist to give you confidence in him or her, and to ensure that the final result is what you’ve asked for. If things don’t turn out the way you wanted, remain calm and ask for things to be rectified. In today’s climate, especially, we are up on our toes to give our clients a genuine and professional service - not that we didn’t before! Give your stylists loyalty and they, in return, will look after you and your hair.

Dear Christine, Last year, my 18-year-old son had a fling with a 22-yearold holidaymaker and they exchanged email addresses. She was soon writing to say she was pregnant, but my son didn’t answer. He refuses to acknowledge that he now has a little daughter and has told me to have nothing to do with her. He doesn’t know I’m still in email contact with the mum and am very happy to be a grandma. It’s breaking my heart that I can’t tell anyone. What do I do? I can’t forget about the baby, just because my son wishes that! I’ve seen pictures of her and she is so beautiful with red hair, just like mine! It upsets me that she’ll one day find out that her dad didn’t want her. K

Dear K, I’m sorry that you’re in this difficult position. However, I feel there are a couple of basics your son should be aware of. For example, even though he lives in Tenerife, he has a legal obligation to the child and, if he’s working, should pay some child maintenance. It may be that your granddaughter’s mum doesn’t want anything to do with him now and doesn’t want money from him, either. You need to ask her what she wants. As she’s the one looking after the little girl, her wishes should be important to you when you make your decisions. Your son also has a moral duty to be a father to his child, for she exists whether he likes it or not. You could tell him you’re delighted to be a grandmother and you don’t want the little girl growing up without you in her life. If he’s unhappy about that, you might see your granddaughter secretly, but this is

far from ideal and he’s likely to find out eventually. In your position, I would tell him firmly that he doesn’t have to be closely involved with his daughter, but he should at least acknowledge her, sending her birthday and Christmas presents, for example. I would also suggest that he spend some time getting to know her, for all the joy she would bring into his life and for the girl’s own benefit. Many young dads in similar situations do change their minds and want to know their children when they’re a bit older and more mature themselves. I sincerely hope that you and your granddaughter’s mother can work together for the little girl’s welfare, and that your son starts to behave like a dad, albeit at a distance for a lot of the time. Christine

Dear Christine, I love my boyfriend dearly, but I can’t cope with his aversion to soap and water. It wasn’t too bad before we came to Tenerife, but with the heat here, he stinks like a tramp! The idea of being intimate with him is abhorrent to me now and I’m starting to hate even being close, never mind sharing a bed. I’ve tried telling him how bad it is, but he takes no notice. If this carries on, I can see that I’ll be returning to the UK on my own, and all our plans for a future here will go down the pan. He used to keep himself clean, so what do you suppose happened? Do you think I can change him back to how he was? ‘Jane’,

Dear ‘Jane’, I can imagine how hard it is living with someone with poor,

personal hygiene. It’s not only offensive to the nose, it can be a health hazard and spell death to intimacy. I think you should give assertiveness another try here. You could say: “I really love you but right now I don’t want to be close to you because you smell unpleasant. Please will you have a shower?” This may do the trick. If not, you might ask him what the problem is because you can’t help noticing he’s been reluctant to take showers. If this problem-solving approach makes him open to suggestions, you could propose that you have a sexy shower together. If he expects to share a bed with you, but still smells bad, you could say: “I’d love to, but on another occasion. Right now, I don’t want to because you smell dirty. Will you sleep in the spare room/on the sofa tonight?” Stick to your guns, politely but firmly and don’t share the same bed until he’s clean. If, after a week of these tactics, he still hasn’t addressed the issue constructively, you might give him an ultimatum to get clean or you’ll leave. I expect he’s simply got lazy and doesn’t feel the need to impress you any more. But this can’t go on and, if he doesn’t change I really think you should kick him into touch. Good luck. Christine Christine Craggs-Hinton is the author of 18 self-help books, including ‘How to Lower your Blood Pressure’, ‘Living with Fibromyalgia’, and ‘Overcoming Anorexia’. Her books are available from all good UK bookshops as well as ‘The Paper Shop’, Apolo Centre and ‘Bookswop’, Edificio Cristianos 1, both of which are in Los Cristianos.

PARANOIA about exposure to sun, and indoor lifestyles, are causing life-threatening health problems for children through vitamin D deficiency. A new study records that casualty departments throughout the UK are dealing with dozens of emergency cases involving infants. They were having seizures as a direct result of not getting enough vitamin D, which is essential for healthy teeth and bones. In one case, a baby suffered brain damage after a fit. Warnings over the links between sunburn and skin cancer have prompted some people to shun the sun completely.

In the dark over the benefits of sunshine Actress Gwyneth Paltrow revealed recently that she was diagnosed with very poor vitamin D levels after years of keeping her skin covered. The study said the extreme cases were part of an escalating problem of a deficiency of the vitamin, which the body makes when exposed to sunlight. The report, in the London Journal of Primary Care, has prompted experts to call for vitamin D pills to be made

more widely available on the NHS, especially for pregnant women. It also reveals the introduction of schemes which offer mothers supplements has been slow. Some London areas have no vitamin packs available, and people are ignorant about the benefits of vitamin D, which is also found in oily fish, liver and eggs. Colin Michie, a co-author of the study, said vitamin D deficiency was no longer a “poor”

problem, and that the middleclasses were just as vulnerable. The consultant paediatrician, from Ealing Hospital and BMI Clementine Churchill, said GPs should be more alert to symptoms such as muscle aches and pains. “This is a totally avoidable condition, which is now a public health issue,” he said. “It is

affecting middle-class children because they are being overprotected with sunscreen and not going out as much. “The more dramatic cases tend to be in people who wear traditional clothing and so, are covered up.” A special investigation is being launched into the extent of emergency admissions for

patients with vitamin D deficiency. Mr Michie analysed the cases of 17 babies and infants treated at Ealing Hospital for a severe lack of vitamin D between 2006 and 2008. He found many experienced a delay in walking - a problem last common in Victorian times.

Best foot forward can be antidote to womb cancer SPENDING less time sitting and more time on your feet could reduce the risk of developing womb cancer. Women who exercise and keep active are around 30% less likely to develop womb cancer than couch potatoes, according to research published in the British Journal of Cancer. Scientists from the United States reviewed published papers through to last December and found a strong link between the amount of exercise and physical activity women do, and a lower risk of developing womb cancer. In a separate study of 70,000 women, they also found that sitting down for longer periods of time was linked to an increased risk of the disease. Dr Steven Moore, lead author of the study, from the National Cancer Institute in Maryland, said: “Physical activity is known to reduce risk for breast and colon cancer, and now our study has found that physical activity can reduce risk for womb cancer as well. “We already know that maintaining a healthy body weight

is an important way to reduce the risk of womb cancer, but our study showed that physical activity has a protective effect of its own. “Interestingly, we also found a link between total time spent sitting and womb cancer, and that spending less time sitting and more time on your feet may complement exercise as a way of preventing the dis-

ease.” Dr Moore added that further research was needed to discover how different types, levels and amounts of exercise affect a woman’s chance of developing the disease. Womb cancer is the fourth most-common cancer in women, with more than 7,500 new cases diagnosed each year in the UK.

Restaurant review of Oriental Garden IT’S not easy picking the right restaurant. Family nights out with my mob were always a nightmare as we all had such different tastes. One of us is a vegetarian, while another will only eat fish. Then there are dates. Nothing is guaranteed to spoil a romantic night out more than a date that hates the restaurant or the food. But worry no longer as Oriental Garden, in CC Americas Plaza, is the answer to all your problems. The first thing that strikes you about Oriental Garden is the cleanliness. The place is spotless, especially the toilets - easily the most comfortable I have experienced in Tenerife. Oriental Garden is exactly that: a taste of Asia rather

Page 42

than a restaurant that focuses on just one area. The menu features dishes from China, Thailand, India and Japan. But don’t think this means they are a Jack of all trades and masters of none. They have specialist chefs and

kitchen staff for all the regions they serve. The Japanese menu, for example, features a plethora of sushi options, as well as a specialised Tepanyaki table and chef. My party decided to take advantage of the wide range of options by having something from all the areas. However, there are over 25 separate banquets to choose from, if you want to stick with one taste. Our decision opened up the first nice problem. I wanted to try everything! And this is the real joy of Oriental Garden. I guarantee there will be dishes you have never tried, and will have never heard of. After much deliberation, we went for the Chicken Tikka with cheese, Thai sirloin skewers, gold bags, Chinese pies, Chicken satay and salmon sashimi. The chicken tikka with cheese was a real joy and such an obvious dish. It’s a gorgeous mix that really is big enough for a main course. The gold bags are a real delight. They are similar to wonton, but the meat is a different mixture and they have been made with care. Chinese pie is just that: tiny little meat pies! The chicken satay and salmon sashimi

were perfect, but the real winners were the sirloin skewers. Sure, it’s not a dish that is hard to get wrong, but the sauce accompaniment is worth the walk to Thailand on its own. It’s a soya sauce base with ginger and a hint of something that just makes the mouth water. As it is now, writing this. It was so good that an extra pot was required and used during the remainder of the evening. The pre-main course was the traditional crispy duck with pancakes. There is nothing worse than a fatty dry duck, and this was the polar opposite. Fleshy, tender, off the bone and moist. The plum

sauce was not jammy and the vegetables suitably crunchy. Main course saw our table packed with goodies. Raw fish is not to everyone’s taste, but it is certainly ours. We went for the multiple Nigiri option. This was Salmon, Octopus, Tuna, Sea bass, Cuttle Fish and the star turn, Eel on a bed of sticky rice. They were all perfect, but the Eel stood out. Maybe because it is quite a rare dish over here, but it was to die for. In fact, the Nigiri was so nice that we even managed to persuade our “non-fishy friend” to try a salmon piece. Suffice to say, he is now “one of us”. While two of us enjoyed the sushi, the meatier main courses were hitting the spot with the other pair of diners. At Oriental Garden, they encourage experimentation. You can literally pick your meat and then create your style and sauce. With that in mind, they chose the Chicken Green Curry with Vermicelli Singapur Noodles and Beef Kumpai, all

washed down with a delicious Moroccan Red Wine. It was a first for me as well, and let’s say the African wine-makers are a well-kept secret. It was magnificent. The noodles and beef were first class. However, the green curry was given the rosette for dish of the night. All of my party are regular Thailand visitors, and they claim the curry is exactly like being there. In fact, that was the theme of the evening. Every dish we had made us feel like we were thousands of miles away, even though we were simply in the heart of Las Americas. Manager Dan has created a first-class team around him, and the service matched the quality of the food. The prices are competitive and situated opposite Mare Nostrum, or the Mediterranean Palace for those longer residents, you are in the right place to start your evening. Oriental Garden is a real taste of the Orient - and real find.

Horoscopes of the week Libra September 24th-October 23rd Geminis hold the key to you making a crossover in your career. You are not a sign who likes to feel as if you are on your own - but then, few of us do. This solo stance you have taken of late has not really painted you in an agreeable light, though. But it’s not too late to make up for lost time.

CAPRICORN There’s a decision you keep putting off, even though you know it could alter the very course of your life. Fun times link to Sagittarians, though, who need your dry wit to relax and unwind. New career avenues beckon via an e-mail you reply to during the week, but be wary about jumping in at the deep end. AQUARIUS Holidays and breaks are set to be on your agenda, which should make it easy for you to get up and get in work

mode. But don’t slack, though, because important eyes are upon you. Whatever you do in the coming days, do not entertain an ex. You were too good for him/her then and you’re still a cut above! PISCES A fresh view of a work problem can be found via midweek meetings. You don’t seem to want to shy away from the major discussions this time, but you really do seem determined to bring everything out into the open. Matters relating to Aries do not have to be talked about - not yet, anyway. ARIES Make sure that you don’t let arrogance stop you from giving that older face the respect you know he/she deserves. You of all people should know what it feels like to lose the power you hold, so start as you mean to go on and treat the person as an equal. Romance could be linked to a phone call received on Tuesday. TAURUS I know you find it hard to say sorry at times, Taurus, but this is one week though where it will be worth your while backing down in confrontations. Dress well throughout this week. been dreaming of. You’ll shortly begin to make sense of life and love. GEMINI You find yourself having to make several plans for the weekend to cover all possible dramatics that may take place. Don’t pay out money you may not get back in business because aspects suggest others are more than willing to invest their finances and energy into you. You could soon be lucky in business. CANCER You have so many admirers who are ready, willing and able to obey your every word, but I don’t think you really want a partner who is 100% compliant, do you Cancer? Don’t play games in love in the coming days this weekend because it will come back on you if you do. But you do have someone in mind, don’t you? LEO Stick to the plans you made for the coming week, because your love life will benefit if you do. The sun is casting you in a most stubborn light and, if you are not careful, you could end up upsetting the applecart in a most beneficial work matter which will not come round a second time. But some exciting new options lie ahead. VIRGO The chance to get out and about, and to visit some new and exciting places, may prove more costly than you had thought, but it is sure to put you in the sights of many an attractive face. Don’t push work deals in social time. It could be the undoing of a friend ship if you do, so keep a tight rein on your emotions.

Happy Monarch’s flying high again

MONARCH, flushed with its summer success story, is adding extra flights to popular Spanish destinations – including Tenerife - throughout this month’s schools’ half-term period. Additional flights will operate from Luton to Alicante and Tenerife on 22nd and 29th October, and an extra flight between Manchester and Malaga on the 28th. Tim Jeans, Monarch’s Managing Director, said: “We had a huge demand for

Page 44

flights to Spain and the Canary Islands this summer, with record-breaking passenger and load factors recorded over the past few months.” Monarch laid on an extra 2,000 seats, and Mr Jeans added: “This demand has continued into October, and these additional services are in direct response to this.” The airline carried a record number of passengers during September, and the most popular trips were to Almeria, Malaga and Palma. The company is also launching a new Italy service between Gatwick and Calabria next summer.

First holiday companies, now travel money firms. More than 13,000 holidaymakers have been left without travel money after one of the UK’s largest foreign exchange firms collapsed at the beginning of the month. Travellers lost out when Crown Currency Exchange ceased trading following a weekend of speculation over the company’s finances. Administrators MCR have stressed that it cannot guarantee a “quick return” of people’s money or an early resolution to the situation. Customers have been unable to contact the company since before the weekend, when it emerged Barclays had frozen CCE’s bank accounts after its directors reportedly told the bank it was on the brink of collapse. CCE, based in Hayle, Cornwall, allowed customers to pre-order currencies up to a year in advance at current exchange rates. Holidaymakers could buy foreign currency valuing anything between £300 and £10,000. Anxious customers, some due to go on holiday within days, have taken to online message boards to vent their frustration. Paul Clark, partner at administrator MCR, said:

Currency exchange collapses “Like many operators in the travel sector, it has experienced a difficult trading environment during the course of the past 12 months, which has been exacerbated by a further downturn and general tightening of the travel market.”

He added: “We fully appreciate the difficult position in which many will now find themselves in - many in the build-up to holidays or business trips, as well as money transfers associated with second home purchases.” CCE - which was set up by

husband and wife team Peter and Susan Benstead was not available for comment. A message on the website asks customers to contact MCR at the email address crowncurrencyexchange@m cr.uk.com

New Mondeo is a real dazzler, in every way! YOU have to hand it to Ford – they really know how to push the boat out when it comes to updating motors, and the new Mondeo is the best of this range yet. Ford’s next-generation family favourite will bring new levels of style, luxury and efficiency to the market. Following the latest Fiesta and imminent new Focus, the Mondeo will be a global car, with minor changes being made to suit individual markets around the world. It will also be built in a number of countries, although design and engineering is taking place for the first time at Ford’s American headquarters in Michigan. As our picture shows, the family resemblance to the new Focus is instantly apparent in the bold front, which features a much larger lower grille, swept-back headlights and pronounced ridges in the bonnet. At the rear, large chrome exhausts integrated into the bumper, and a subtle bootlid spoiler, hint at the Mondeo’s

sporting potential. And a chunky shoulder line with muscular wheel arches completes the purposeful appearance. Inside will be Ford’s most luxurious interior ever, as the

car attempts to move closer to upmarket rivals from Audi, BMW and Mercedes. The company’s SYNC system allows drivers to control virtually any portable media device through steering wheel but-

tons, or voice recognition technology. In addition, the Mondeo will offer lane departure and blind-spot warning systems, as well as a rear-view camera. Also, a clever Driver Alert

set-up uses cameras to recognise when the owner is falling asleep at the wheel, and sounds a warning. Under the skin will be a modified version of the existing model’s front-wheel-drive

platform. For the first time, the Mondeo will use a torque vectoring system, from the Focus. It will also get a new electric power-steering set-up and dynamic cornering control all of which should boost driver involvement and improve refinement. Power will come from Ford’s 1.6 and 2.0-litre EcoBoost petrol turbo engines. In the current car, the latter produces 200bhp and returns 36mpg combined, while the 1.6 be found in the new CMAX, will offer 150bhp and 180bhp outputs. Also available will be a range of 2.0 TDCi diesel models, with 112bhp, 137bhp or 163bhp. A raft of eco tweaks on all models will improve economy and cut emissions. This includes regenerative braking, stop/start and an active grille system, which regulates air flow through the radiator and engine compartment to reduce drag. A concept version of the Mondeo will debut next year, after the Focus launches in January. But the bigger car is still three years away from dealers.

Night-time driving ban would save lives A BAN on newly-qualified young motorists from driving at night, drinking alcohol and carrying passengers of a similar age, would save 200 lives a year in the UK. And recent research at Cardiff University suggested the ban would also result in 1,700 fewer injuries. The study, presented at an international road-safety conference in London, backs the introduction of Graduated Licensing (GDL) for young people aged between 17 and 24 for up to two years after passing their driving tests. Similar schemes are already operating successfully in Australia, New Zealand, Canada

and parts of the US. The Cardiff team analysed road-accident data in the UK from 2000-2007 to estimate the number of lives which could be saved by the restrictions. They discovered that one in five new motorists crashed within six months of passing his or her driving test. The researchers also stressed that many accidents could be prevented, with costs to the NHS being reduced by Graduated Licensing. Dr Sarah Jones, who led the research, said: “GDL works in other countries, and there’s no good reason why it wouldn’t work in the UK.”

Mandia makes a good point CD Tenerife 1 Cartagena 1 THIS could well be the craziest match seen at the Heliodoro in decades. There were red cards galore, a plethora of missed one-on-ones - and a return to “old skool” passion. New coach Juan Carlos Mandia wanted his side to prove a point, and they did that all right. But so did he, as he was sent to the stands before half-time for rightly berating a clown referee. Spanish football seems to have more joke referees then the other big European leagues. Maybe it’s our British mentality. We like a tackle and our Spanish cousins see tackling like a basketball ref. Even so, the standard in Spain is poor and, of course, the lower down the pyramid you travel, the worse it gets. Last Sunday, Ceballos Silva was the whistle-blower and boy, did he wear out the pea! He seemed to be taking it as well. Apart from sending off Mandia, he also waved his red at Chus Herrero and Mariano

Barca's Jonathan Soriano

Sanchez from the visitors, plus Tenerife left-back Bellvis. Yep, Bellvis really did leave the building! Snr Silva also dished out eight yellow cards as he lost all control of his senses. Mandia will now serve a twomatch touchline ban, so he will now watch Tenerife more times than he has managed them! Tenerife played much better against Cartagena and they should have won comfortably. In defence, Luna replaced the luckless Pablo Sicilia, who will be out for at least six weeks after straining knee ligaments. Kome was given a rare start, and Antonio Hidalgo was pushed a bit further forward to support Nino. There was more passion in the side and Tenerife, after a

quiet start, created more chances in this match than the previous five combined. But they still looked nervous at the back and went behind to another penalty just after the hour mark. That is now the third penalty Tenerife have conceded in just six matches. Touche notched, but Tenerife roared back five minutes later with a cool, trademark Nino finish inside the box. I lost count of the amount of one-on-one chances, and it never seemed to be Tenerife’s day. On another occasion it could - no, should have been four. But a point is a point, and a small start. With the international week in full swing, Tenerife have the honour of being the

“Match of the Day” in Spain this Sunday. Their 8pm start (our time) at Barcelona B is live on Canal Plus. A win would see Tenerife move out of the relegation zone! The hosts have made a solid start to life back in the second division. Barca legend Luis Enrique has done a super job with the young kids, and he seems a good bet to get the main job when Pep quits in the future. They have won all three of their home matches and claimed the scalps of highflying Elche and Xerez in the process. Striker Jonathan Soriano has made a fine start to the season and is the player to watch. Tenerife will again make changes at the back, with David Prieto replacing Luna alongside Melli at centreback. Prieto, back after suspension and raring to go, said: “I've enjoyed training with the lads this week. There is a real good feeling amongst the camp. I cannot wait to play, if selected, and I feel we are ready to win. “Barca have some very good players. They are uncomplicated and we know what to expect. But we are confident of going there and getting some points.”

Superstars Super-choke! A WEEK after Palms A let slip a 5-2 lead at Phoenix Knights, Summerlands Superstars did the same to surrender the lead in Division One. Ray’s mob were given a real test by Bar 180 B, but they were firm favourites to clinch the home win when 5-3 ahead. But Ashley lost his second match of the night, this time to Danny, and then Grandad failed to hold his

Page 46

nerve as Mark sunk the levelling black. The dropped points helped Palms A return to the top as they edged out Legends A 7-3. How Legends are second-bottom is a slight mystery after their dogged display in Torviscas. Tenerife Hammers A won 7-3 at Atlantis Sharks, despite Wez dropping a rare singles point. Phoenix Knights’ good recent run continued with victory at Rat Pack, and Target Bar also snuck a 6-4er at Bar 180 A. 8 Ball Massive had a, erm, massive 9-1 win at Bar La Cana,

Hoops edged past Men of Atlantis, as did Nauta A against Toscales, Summerlands Allstars at Dreamers and Terrace Bar A against Trap Door. This Tuesday sees some juicy fixtures as Palms A travel to Bar 180 B and Hammers A host Superstars in the late 9.30pm match. Legends B made it a perfect ten out of ten in Division Two, but they were pushed all the way by Terrace Bar B. The visitors were 2-0 up before the leaders fought back. Legends have a handy ninepoint lead over Lupain, who

won an entertaining match 64 with Woody’s. Hat-tip to Michael for his full-table clearance and to Alex, who won the last rubber with a six-ball clearance. Gaffers snuck past Bar Tasca in another thriller, which saw a 7ball doubles win for John H and Rossi, for Tasca. Bar 180 C moved fourth after smashing third-placed Target Rangers 8-2 in the win of the night. The bottom two clashed in Torviscas and it was Connors who triumphed 6-4 over Palms B to win their first-ever match.

It’s tough at the top WE have reached the halfway point of the season of the Oasis Fm Darts League with the three teams at the top of Division 1 really stamping their authority. Nauta A, with gumshields in place, dealt a knock-out blow to Toscales Ensecan with an 8-0 thumping. Losing only one leg all night, they had Mike Telf retaining his belt with 15 and 20-dart finishes. Moving up to second spot, Exiles put Target B firmly on the canvas by seven rounds to one, with Mark punching out a 180. And Bar 180A also climbed into the ring and jabbed their way to an 8-0 success over the Heroes, Richie striking an 180 uppercut for the home side. In Valle San Lorenzo, Toscales Allsorts thought they had the Phoenix Bar firmly on the ropes after they had boxed their way into a 3-1 lead. But with a fighting-fit Ashley in good form, the Los Abrigos outfit survived the distance and went home with a 5-3 success. At the Target Bar, the XMen’s John counted out a maximum score, and Graham had a 109 finish as their team pushed Target A all the way. But as the bell sounded, it was a 6-2 win on points for the Los Cristianos

team. The Silver Surfers slugged out a close bout with the Sundowners, which could not be separated by the referee, and ended all square at 4-4. The top three in Division 2 also seem to know their way around the ring, Barracudartsboys, in particular, have quick hand-speed and used that to dish out a 7-1 defeat to Tavern. Still in second place, Nauta Nutters lost just two legs in an 8-0 stoppage against the Hunters, Dale keeping his guard up with his third 180 of the season. Bar 180 B’s Liam struck a fine 152 finish against thirdplaced Gaffers, but his team hit the deck by going down 5-3. No biting or gouging was the order of the night for an improving Woody’s B as they recorded back-to-back wins and had a good laugh with the Playgirls, supersub Silvia maintaining her unbeaten record for the home team. Yelas Bar, ably assisted by regular winter player Dave Palmer´s return went up one place to fifth with a 7-1 sucker punch against Amigos Bad Girls, and Ourplace Naturals had the gloves off with a 6-2 result at Phoenix Flames. Rood B player Betty, having recovered well from her hat-trick at the Finals Night, helped send La Caña Lancers staggering to a 5-3 home loss.

Pirates of the Canaries PIRACY is “a war-like act carried out by private parties (not affiliated to any government) that engage in acts of robbery and, or, criminal violence at sea.” Although not so common today, it was once the scourge of seafarers and maritime nations throughout the world, and the Canary Islands were no exception. The Canaries became a hub for piratical activity when they found themselves a crossroads for the Americas, and a staging port for West Africa and ships en-route to the Indian Ocean and new lands to the east. The islanders were to be plagued with pirate raids from the early 16th century for the next 400 years, with raiding parties attacking supply and treasure ships at anchor in their ports. In addition, they also experienced numerous land attacks, when the raiders would venture ashore and wreak havoc in the ports and costal settlements. Although pirates were a law unto themselves and were beyond the direct control of any nation, they were taken advantage of by the crowns of countries which were at war with other nations. Privateers were issued with “Letters of Mark”, which were royal warrants authorising the seizure of the ships and goods of hostile nations. So long as the crown received its percentage, it was generally happy to endorse these actions. The earliest pirate raids on the Canaries were perpetrated by the French during the period of hostility which existed between the two nations during the reign of Carlos V (1500-1558). The French secured bases for their ships on the islet of Los Lobos, (off the coast of Lanzarote), and Cape Anaga, (the isolated, north-eastern tip of Tenerife). From these bases, pirate

Page 48

legends such as Francois Le Clerc (better known as pegleg) and Jean Fleury (aka John Florin) harassed interisland shipping and carried out land raids on various islands. The most notorious was undoubtedly Le Clerc’s looting and burning of Santa Cruz de La Palma in 1553. After the French, the next in line to attack the islands were the English, who began during the reign of Felipe II and were most prolific following the death of Felipe’s wife, Mary Tudor, the Catholic English queen). Mary was succeeded by her half-sister “The Virgin Queen” Elizabeth and, as a staunch Protestant, she was content to sanction privateering against the papist, Don Felipe.

This prompted a wave of hostile attacks from the leading mariners of the day. In 1585, Sir Francis Drake attacked La Palma, followed in 1593 by Captain William Harper, who raided Lanzarote and Fuertaventura. Two years after Sir Walter Raleigh attacked Tenerife, he followed up with raids on Arrecife (Lanzarote’s main port) in 1616. At the same time, shipowner and trader Captain John Hawkins (or Juan Aquinas to the Spaniards) carried on legitimate trade with Tenerife merchant and land-owner Don Pedro Ponte, between the islands and abroad. However, this did not prevent him from entering,

simultaneously, into a spot of privateering. During this period, the Captain General of The Canaries (a joint political and military post) organised, together with the Italian engineer Torriani, the construction of various coastaldefence fortifications, many of which can be seen to this day (Guanapay Castle in Lanzarote being a fine example). These ‘castles’ had the effect of protecting the main ports and surrounding areas, but they did not eradicate piracy or attempted raids. Over the next two centuries, further attacks were made by John Jennings, in 1706, and Woodes Rogers two years later, both at

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and Charles Windon, in 1744, at San Sebastian de La Gomera and La Palma. Throughout this entire period, the islanders also suffered at the hands of the Berbers. The Spanish nobles, with military support, mounted various assaults on the north-west African coast and, by way of retaliation, the Berbers sent raiding parties to the archipelago, principally the western isles. As well as looting and pillaging, the Berbers captured large numbers of islanders to act as slaves and took them back to their home ports. The principal raids conducted out by the Berbers were carried out by Dogali or “Turquillo” in 1571 on Arricife, Arraez Morato in 1586 on Teguise (also in Lanzarote) and Tabac Arraez with Suleiman in 1586, again on Teguise, as well as on San

Sebastian de La Gomera. Ironically, at this time, Arraez Ali Romero, the High Admiral of the Navy of Algiers, was a former Canarian fisherman. One Simon Romero, a former native of Las Palmas, had been taken prisoner by Berber pirates at the age of 16. He had worked his way through the ranks and served as Algeria’s Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. In a strange twist of fate, he found himself in a position where he was able to aid the Canarian captives and provide money to help them deal with their enslavement. It was not until the beginning of the 19th century that the Canary Islands were finally freed from marauders. And, with end of the Napoleonic Wars, the islands started to enjoy the relative peace which exists through to the present day.
