Tourism on the up Foreign visitor figures increase - natural landscapes proving more of an attraction TENERIFE showed an increase of 3.27% in the number of tourists staying for the summer season, compared with last year, totalling 1,658,583 in all. The figures are collated from ‘Incoming Tourism Statistics’, prepared by the Cabildo and reviewed by the Research Department of Tourism Tenerife. If we look at the place of origin of the tourists, it highlights the favourable evolution of foreign tourism, with a growth of 7.84% and a figure of 1,007,796 tourists staying. The data reflects a very good performance of the leading markets. The British, with 496,436 housed this summer, recorded a significant increase of 6.84% compared to last year. The German market saw 153,392 tourists, up 1% from 8.77 the previous season. Other markets also produced favourable results France (+12.5%), Belgium (+10,21%), Italy (+9,25%) and Russian and Eastern Europe (+34%), markets that are consolidated in Tenerife. Unlike tourists, domestic customers (those from mainland Spain and island) have registered a negative behaviour. A figure of only 650,787 Spanish visited Tenerife during the summer months, representing a decrease of 3.08%. However, despite the summer, the market builds up a positive balance in the first nine months of the year. In Tenerife in the summer there were a total of 12,326,955 nights spent, 2.43% over the previous year. The occupancy rate

stood at 57.4% (+6.33%) and length of stay of our visitors was 7.43 days on average (0.6 points). The South, with 1,323,227 stays, maintained the positive trend that began in late winter of last year, an increase of 6.02%. In contrast, the situation of the North is negative, a decrease in the volume of visitors by 8.81% with a total count of a mere 278,439 tourists. In the first nine months of the year the island has seen a total of 3,598,574 tourists staying, representing an

increase of 1.35%. Tenerife Tourism Features Interestingly the average age of our visitors is around age 40, according to data provided by the Inbound Tourism Survey of the Cabildo of Tenerife for the last summer season. During these months there has also been an increase in family tourism, which is now at 21 percent of the total. The tourist who visited Tenerife this summer is slightly more active than the previous year. Of our visitors 60.5 percent engaged in some type of activity dur-

ing their holiday as in visit to a theme park, whale watching and hiking, which remain the most frequented by visitors.

The use of the Internet to organise their holiday in Tenerife is now routine among our visitors and 8 out of 10 tourists use this

tool when planning their trip. Currently, 40.5 percent of our visitors online shop for travel services, almost 25 percent more than last summer. On the other hand, according to the study by Turismo de Tenerife in relation to the island’s tourism image among its customers, the experience of travel to Tenerife improves upon previous expectations. The natural landscape of the island is the main factor that affects this improvement but at the same time surprises and delights the visitor with the climate and atmosphere of friendliness and hospitality. Except for the weather, which is a determining factor for the attraction for our tourists, natural landscapes have come to exert a decisive influence on the choice of the island as a holiday destination, ahead of the beaches and the sea. Hospitality of Tenerife and a friendly atmosphere are also an important attraction for tourists, as with satisfaction with a quality accommodation network, the desire for relaxation and tranquility or to visit family and friends. The study finds that nearly 94% of tourists visiting the island recommend it.

Santander profits hurt by new rules SANTANDER, Spain’s largest bank, has seen its net profit down by a huge 26.4% to 1.64 billion euros in the year’s third quarter. It was, said the bank, down to provisions for bad loans, which hit the results. The bank booked a one-off provision of 472 million euros - or a precautionary reserve for loans turning sour - during the quarter because of changes in Bank of Spain regulations. Without this, the third-quarter profit was 2.11bn euros, still down 5.1% from the previous year. Santander chairman Emilio Botin last month said the new rules were “possibly the most significant for the international financial system in many decades”. The bank’s net interest income, which is the difference between interest paid out on deposits and interest earned on lending, went up 8.4% to 7.40bn euros. Bad loans as a proportion of total lending edged up 0.05% to 3.42% from three months earlier. A bank spokesman said: “The group again showed its capacity to generate recurring profits in a difficult environment.” The Madrid stock market welcomed the results, with Santander shares bucking the trend by rising 1.62% in a market that was down 0.12%. Santander, expanded further into the British marketplace during the quarter when it bought 318 retail branches from the Royal Bank of Scotland in August for 1.88bn euros, (£1.65 billion). That deal followed its takeovers of Abbey in 2004, plus Bradford & Bingley and Alliance & Leicester in late 2008, at the height of the

financial crisis. Meanwhile, BBVA, Spain’s second-biggest bank after Santander, also reported lower net profits for the last quarter, down 17.4%, and again new bad-loan provisions were the factor. Over the first nine months of the year, Santander gained 37% of its profits in Europe – 42% in Latin America, 18% in

Britain and 3.0% in the US. Banks are under pressure since September’s announcement of tougher, international, capital requirements intended to protect against financial crises, which will be presented for approval to the Group of 20 (G20) developed and developing nations in the next few weeks. The changes, known as

Basel III, require banks to build high-quality assets to protect against future losses. But Spanish banks are also struggling with an economic downturn in Spain, following the 2008 collapse of the booming property market, which has left developers and homeowners alike struggling to meet loan repayments.

The book will be launched jointly by Justin Harman, Irish Ambassador to Spain and Hugo O’Donnell, Duke of Estrada, Duke of Tetuan and of the Royal Academy of History of Spain. Focused on family history, the book covers virtually all the Irish families who came to the Canary Islands between the XVI and XVII. The text begins in Ireland in the late seventeenth century, when clashes between Catholics and Protestants were increased by the dynastic succession. The throne was at stake, politics and religion mixed, leading to a war between two sides. In 1690 the Battle of Boyne marks the decline of the Catholic forces, James flees to France and the southern ports of Ireland, and Waterford, become the point of emigration of Irish Catholics. The fate of this diaspora is the continent of Europe and North America. In Europe,

Spain, as the main Catholic monarchy, which receives the largest number of troops. But will always be the Atlantic ports to trade, the most sought goal for the Irish. The Canary Islands, appreciated the scale of Indian trade, had a small group of immigrants and Puerto de La Cruz and La Orotava become home to many Irish. These young people came without much baggage but with a network of family contacts across the European Atlantic coast. The Walsh, Cologan, Fitz-Gerald, Cullen, Barry, Lynch, White, etc. and other families organised a commercial structure within a few years. After decades of unprecedented commercial success, Bernardo Valois in his later years gave the baton to John Cologan White, who renews and undertakes new trade routes - Canarian wines, lichen and cochineal. That flow generates a diversification into the financial business, shipping and agriculture. All this commercial traffic resulting in extensive documentation that is treasured by the family until today. There are thousands of letters from family archives, the book reflects carefully each exchange, or short stories, some others simply striking mundane recounting episodes from pirates and records of visits by famous people that together reflect the life and society of three centuries of island history.

Euro bonus for non-benefit jobless JOBLESS workers, who have lost their rights to benefits, have been given a huge lift in the form of a 420-euro monthly payment by the Spanish Government.

It means that some 340,000 people are eligible to benefit, which will cost the government a total of 642 million euros, The welcome news was announced yesterday (Thursday) by Deputy Prime Minister Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega. This new measure will

apply to registered job-seekers, whose incomes are below 468 euros a month, or 75% of the minimum 624-euro wage, and who agree to train for jobs. The National Statistics Institute reported an unemployment rate of 17.92% in July, which was almost twice

the eurozone average. The government had forecast that the rate would remain high, closing the year at 17.9% and going up a full 1% per cent next year. Spain, which has the highest unemployment rate in the European Union, was hit by the recession nearly two years ago.

A WORD FROM OUR EDITOR

Projects for Bureaucracy regeneration gone mad...

Email: editor@canarianweekly.com

Aside from Sesame Street, see page 36, this has to be the funniest story I have read in the Spanish press for sometime. If you thought the UK was bad for bureaucracy, red tape and health and safety law then look out, it´s coming to Spain. A number of municipalities have introduced a number of by-laws to which residents have to obey. Here are just a selection that the Spanish periodical ‘El País’ listed:Any type of activity which can disturb is prohibited between the hours of 3pm and 5pm, so no shouting during Siesta. No sexual practices can be carried out in public spaces. No defecating, urinating or spitting in the street, or throwing litter on the ground. The volume of the human voice has to be maintained at levels which do not affect good coexistence. Care must be taken not to bother neighbours with unnecessary noises such as slammed doors, bangs, shouts, dancing, singing, and loud music, especially at night. The drinking of alcohol in public areas in prohibited if it bothers residents or passersby and if it is done from a glass bottle or a can. Terraces are excluded. The release of water on the street is banned, if it comes as a consequence of watering plants on balconies or terraces. Municipal authorisation is needed for the use of radios, televisions, musical instruments, music centres or megaphones in the street. Domestic repairs, the moving of furniture and other similar activities have

Page 04

to be carried out between 8am and 9pm on working days and between 10am and 8pm on Sundays and fiestas and the evenings before fiestas, unless absolutely necessary. Activities which could dirty or damage the street, or which affect cleanliness, aesthetics, the integrity or the economic value of public facilities are banned. All types of graffiti are banned along with painting, staining, writing, inscribing on anything in public spaces, including trees. The placing of advertising material on the windscreens of cars parked in the street is banned. No games or spontaneous sports competitions which can be considered to disturb the peace can be played in public spaces. This includes acrobatics, games of skill using bicycles, skates or skateboards outside designated areas. The purchase of food, drinks and other products from un-authorised street salesmen is prohibited. The providing of services in the street such as tarot readings, fortune telling, massages and tattoos is prohibited, as is collaborating with those who provide such services by acting as look-out or warning when police are approaching. The use of benches and public streets for anything other than what they were intended is prohibited. And these are the funniest two- Car engines must not be left running for more than two minutes when parked on the street, except in the case of a hold up. And, prostitutes working on the roads of one municipality have been ordered to wear fluorescent clothing or face a 40 euro fine for being a danger to traffic. Whatever next?

THE TENERIFE Cabildo announced last week that the Convention of Tourist Areas and Regeneration has awarded three new projects to be carried out in the Mare Verde Park, Avenida Brussels, Adeje, and Luis Diaz de Losada Street in Arona, with a total budget of over 8.7 million euros.

The vice president of the Cabildo and Minister of the Tourism Council, José Manuel Bermúdez, said that these actions “will involve the substantial transformation of the tourist area of both municipalities and strengthen the competitiveness of the island as a holiday destination.” The projects have been awarded 56,000 euros for the urban park Mare Verde, 62,565 euros to Avenida Brussels and 36,100 euros for the street Luis Diaz de Losada. In total 56 proposals were received, and three have been chosen the companies involved

will have four months to write the projects. In the case of urban park Mare Verde, the works will allow for complete rehabilitation of that area of Adeje. For Brussels Avenue, also in Adeje, the project will combine cars, pedestrians and cyclists. As for Luis de Losada street in Arona the aim is to improve the environmental quality of the area to provide solutions that achieve greater linkage and flow between the public and private space of the existing businesses, at the same time allowing direct connection to the beach.

These three projects are part of the Convention of Tourist Areas and Regeneration, an initiative launched by the Cabildo, through Turismo de Tenerife, the towns of Arona, Adeje and Santiago del Teide and Puerto de la Cruz and hospitality employers Ashotel for the period 2007-2013. It focuses on the improvement of beaches, promenades and green spaces, improvements to roads for large numbers of tourists, beautification of the links to the motorways and comprehensive rehabilitation pilot studies, amongst others.

Student support THE CABILDO has allocated 99,791 euros for students who have to travel outside the island to study. Cabildo de Tenerife, through the area of Youth, Education and Equality, has awarded 75 scholarships for vocational training for the mobility of students who have to travel outside the island to study or practice training. It is a total of 99,791 euros, as approved by the Governing Council at its meeting last Monday, these scholarships are targeted at those students wishing to study or gain work experience training in schools or work, as well as specialized courses in their professional field or language courses, as a complementary to the European exchange programme Erasmus. Among the issues addressed are the area of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries included the approval of the terms of the awards Tenerife Rural in the work of biodiversity conservation, heritage and rural traditions related to agricultural activity. These awards are intended to recognize the careers of those persons known for their contribution to the conservation of crop and livestock diversity, maintenance of traditional farming practices of high environmental value, for their work on the recovery and conser-

vation linked to rural farming of Tenerife, research, promotion and dissemination of our traditions and innovative entrepreneurship and sustainable rural. The deadline for submitting applications is

December 30, 2010. In the area of Sports, approved the XXIV Games Tenerife Sports Promotion 20102011. This competition is organized by the City Council in collaboration with Disa, CajaCanarias, munici-

palities and federations of the island and brings together some 12,000 school-age athletes each year. This year included for the first time synchronized swimming, water polo and rugby 7.

Emergency landing for a Tenerife flight PASSENGERS on a charter flight from Tenerife to Turkey were delayed for 22 hours in Malta last Friday after the jet made an emergency landing there. The Smartlynx Airbus, destined for Antalya, was about

130 miles east of Malta when it began to lose cabin pressure. The crew had no choice but to turn the aircraft around, and it landed safely at Malta’s international airport, 45 minutes after the scare.

A 62-year-old man from Ecuador managed to win Spain’s first siesta championship after scoring bonus points for his thunderous snore.

Unemployed security worker Pedro Soria Lopez managed to fall asleep for 17 minutes in a busy Madrid shopping centre, netting him the prestigious title of siesta champion and the £890 prize money. Despite a runner-up sleeping for 18 minutes, Mr Lopez pipped him at the post due to

his impressive 70-decibel snores - roughly the same volume as a person talking loudly. “Oh, I am so happy to be the first champion,” laughed Mr Lopez, who was born in Quito, Ecuador. “My wife made me do this, but then they couldn’t wake me up. Naturally, the lunch I had before with the seven euros they had given me helped.” The nine-day snoozathon had been organised as a lighthearted way to champion the Spanish siesta. The much-loved tradition is dying out as longer working

hours restrict Spaniards from taking the post-lunch nap. “People are so stressed out they can’t take siestas any more,” said competition spokesman Andres Lemes. “Studies show it’s a healthy practice that recharges your batteries.” The 360 contestants were organised into groups of five and were given 20 minutes to lie down on couches and sleep for as long as possible. They were timed by a doctor with a pulse-measuring device to determine how long they spent snoozing and a judge awarded points for snoring, odd sleeping posi-

tions and striking pyjamas. One young girl turned up in pink, heart-striped pyjamas and snuggled up to a brown furry bunny. An older man wore a Santa hat and had a cushion stuffed under his t-shirt. Two Americans studying in Madrid read about the contest online and won 2nd and 3rd place in their individual round. “I think I fell asleep, but someone kept kicking my couch,” said Asya Kislyuk, 21, of Indianapolis. “We will now go forth to be the ambassadors for the siesta,” she joked.

AN important warning has been issued by a local dog refuge, reminding owners to keep their pets safe and away from danger next Friday 5th November), which is Guy Fawkes Night. Karen Clack, from Aktiontier, in Granadilla, writes: “Bonfire Night is just around the corner, so please remember to protect your pets from the festivities. “This time of year can be worrying and confusing for your dogs, and because these occurrences don’t happen very often, except at New Year’s Eve and Fiesta times. “These always finish with a firework display, and it makes it a lot scarier for your dogs, puppies and cats. “Dogs especially do not like unfamiliarities, and all the flashes, sudden bangs, smoke and flames can make them extremely scared. “Cats will usually fend for themselves, although you are advised to keep them indoors where possible. “But unfortunately, there have been many cases of dog deaths on Bonfire Night over the last ten years, so you must to keep a close eye on yours. “Accidents and injuries happen on bonfire night, often because dogs or puppies are left to run loose outside. The unfamiliar sounds and flashes cause them to panic and run away. They dash into roads, or get stuck in tight spaces trying to hide from the noises.” Fortunately, there are guidelines that should be followed to keep your dogs safe and sound: To begin with, keep them indoors, if they generally have indoor kennels. Make sure all the doors are locked because, if dogs see an opening, they will make a bolt for it if they become scared. Try to create a small, sheltered area for them, where they can feel protected and in

control. Cuddle them and play calmly with them because it may help dogs become less nervous and take their mind off the situation. If your dog does escape, remain calm and positive when you catch up with them, while trying to entice them back inside as quickly as possible. Karen adds: “If all these rules are followed, then everything should go to plan and you will be able to relax on Bonfire Night and not have to worry about your pet.” Aktiontier is based at the Accion del Sol dog refuge, Poligono Industrial Estate, Exit 51 TF1, directly under the windmills at ITER , Parque Eolica, Granadilla. The refuge, which houses up to 170 strays, is open MondayFriday (3-6 pm) and Marion, who runs the centre, can be contacted on 922 778 630. They run a doggie Fitness Club on Thursday evenings at various locations for walks or fun exercise and agility with some of their dogs. You are all welcome to join in with your own dogs, and there are plenty at the refuge that would love to join in the fun, if you don’t have your own. Please contact Karen 687 905 511 or Tenerife Fitness Club’s Danni Byrne (619 008 035) for more information. The club met at Torviscas last week and enjoyed a lovely walk with the dogs to La Camella, along the seafront. Aktiontier’s next big event is on the 12th December, when they will be holding a horse and dog show at Hipico Del Sur, in Buzanada. Father Christmas will be there with presents for the children, and there will be lots of fun and games for everyone. More information to follow shortly, and it’s definitely a date for the diary.

The World Cup octopus is dead

PAUL the octopus, famed for predicting round-by round winners during the World Cup - and even eventual champions Spain has died. Now, town officials of O Carballiño, in the north-west Spanish province of Ourense, in Galicia, want to house the remains in their Octopus Museum. Businessmen from the town tried, unsuccessfully, to buy

the creature during the championship for 30,000 euros Carlos Montes, Mayor of O Carballiño, said Paul was seen as a “beloved friend” to the town, which holds an octopus fiesta every August. The World Cup octopus, housed in Germany’s Oberhausen Sea Life Aquarium, where it made the predictions, died peacefully in his sleep at the age of two. Paul, who was born in January 2008 in Weymouth, correctly predicted the winner of all seven Germany

matches, also opted for Spain over Holland in the final. His decisions were made when he chose between two feed boxes carrying the flags of the two nations involved. And his exploits transformed him into a global sensation. After Spain’s victory, many Spanish sealife centres offered big money for him, but to no avail. The Oberhausen centre, devastated by his death, insist on keeping their star attraction, and Mayor Porwoll added: “We all loved him and we will truly miss him.”

They are thought of so highly, both internationally and in their native country, that they have been regulars on the jury for the Tango World Festival in Argentina since 2003. Their Tenerife show, which includes a Tango Ball, has been organised by Adeje couple Jason and Viviana Segade, professional dancers specialising in the tango. They will also be dancing at the Festival as Tango Vivo, the stage name they created for themselves in the UK ten years ago. As well as the Festival, which kicked off last night (Thursday) in La Laguna and continues there tonight before moving south, ten workshops have been set up for locals to get to grips with the tango. Viviana says: “It is an exhilarating, passionate dance, and we want to add Tenerife to

News TENERIFE, setting for the film epic Planet of the Apes more than 40 years ago, and last year’s Clash of the Titans remake, is now the platform for a new TV dinosaur series. Documentary film-makers for the Discovery/BBC channel have spent about five weeks on the Island, working flat-out to produce four of the six episodes of Reign of the Dinosaurs, spanning the time period from 250 million years ago 65 million, when they roamed the earth. A Los Angeles film crew, from the Creative Differences company, were dispatched to shoot the scenes, and they received indepth assistance from the Blackstone Film Company, based at Parque de la Reina. Blackstone have vast knowledge of Island. They were able to point them in the direction of appropriate locations, including parts of Teide National Park, Llano de los Viejos, in the borough of La Laguna, and the beach at El Medano beach. They also managed the basic production and technical areas. The important Blackstone imput, plus the varied landscapes of the island, the climate, geography and vegetation, gave Tenerife the edge over Hawaii, which was also in the running as a location Others in past BBC Discovery series which also included some filming in Tenerife, were Walking with Dinosaurs and Walking with Beasts. All the filming of dinosaur locations have now been shot, and it remains only for Creative Differences to

transpose the actual monsters into theTenerife scenes. They have been working

on the project for two years already, and believe it will be at least another 12 months before their efforts

see the light of day. The only complaint from both companies involved in the shooting has been a certain

lack of co-operation for the project by local authorities. Julia Schrodl, from Blackstone, said: “They

should have been a little more flexible in allowing access for us to film some of the locations.”

Tough Atlantic boat race Iberia and BA all will begin in La Gomera set for merger A RACE which pitches the fastest rowing boats in existence against each other is being set up to recreate an event that took place nearly 40 years ago. The company Woodvale Challenge, who boast of organising “the world’s toughest rowing races”, plan to recreate history with the Atlantic Allum Cup. It will celebrate the achievement of cousins Geoff and Don Allum, the first pair ever to row across

Page 10

the Mid-Atlantic Ocean. That event took place on 12th January 1971, when the cousins set off from Las Palmas for America. But a shortage of drinking water meant they had to cut their row short and instead, they arrived at Harrison Point, Barbados, after 73 days at sea. Now, Challenge organisers are looking for individuals to take part in the Atlantic Allum Cup which, appropriately, starts on 12th January 2011. And this time, teams will be racing against each other, from La Gomera to Barbados - a distance of 2,600 miles.

Woodvale will run three record campaigns for the mid-Atlantic, and their crafts will be three of the fastest ocean rowing boats ever built: • Britannia III: a 14-man boat which crossed the Atlantic this year in 38 days with a 12 man crew (to be skippered by Simon Chalk) • Audeamus: an eight-man boat which holds the Indian Ocean speed record (to be put out as an all-female crew, skippered by Lia Ditton) • Oystershack: a six-man boat and the fastest ever into Antigua, taking 37 days (to be skippered by Ian Couch) Participants will pay £8,000

for a chance to have their name in the record books, and James Cracknell, Britain’s triple Olympic Gold medallist, said: “It sounds like a cliché, but these races will change you. “You’ll discover that both the mind and body are capable of things far beyond the boundaries to which we normally push them. “There will be plenty of times in the middle of the ocean when you’ll ask yourself why you entered. But when you reach land, there will only ever be pride in what you have achieved.”

THE proposed merger between Spanish airline Iberia and British Airways, seems set to be completed next January.

Going on the market value, the deal will create Europe’s second-biggest airline after Lufthansa. An extraordinary meeting of Iberia shareholders will be held on 28th November to vote on the planned merger, with their BA counterparts gathering the following day. A statement issued by Iberia on Tuesday read: “Subject to the approval of

the operation by the shareholders of both companies, the merger is expected to be carried out in January 2011.” The two signed an agreement for the merger deal in April in a bid to compete more effectively in the aviation sector, and the European Commission OK’d the deal in July. Willie Walsh, BA’s chief executive, will hold the same title in the new company, International Consolidated Airlines Group (IAG), which will control the two airlines. Iberia chairman Antonio Vazquez will become group chairman.

Mega pay rises as top bosses take bonuses BRITAIN’S top bosses saw their total earnings rise by more than 50% over the year to June, according to the latest Directors’ Pay Report. While pay for company board members went up 45% as a whole, that for chief executives climbed to 55%. The report from the Incomes Data Services (IDS) indicates a dramatic reversal in fortunes over the year. Although basic salary rises across the board appeared to be subdued, growing at just 3.6% for the FTSE 100 chief executives, pay packages were actually boosted by the reappearance of bonus payments, the value of share option gains and separate long-term incentive plans. Steve Tatton, editor of the Incomes Data Services report The average bonus was up 34% at £701,512, share option values rose by more than 90% and LTIPs climbed more than 70%. The “business as usual” approach of remuneration

committees so soon after a recession may upset shareholders, the IDS believes. “It seems the days of earnings restraint by FTSE 350 directors were short lived. It is as though the recession never happened,” said report editor Steve Tatton. “It stands in stark contrast to the coalition Government’s concerns about pay fairness and calls for senior executives in the public sector to accept pay cuts.” IDS believes that, while some chief executives may argue their pay was a result of rising share prices and improved company performance, shareholders are likely to ask whether the business improvement over the period warrants the scale of the increases. “The size of the rebound in incentives for top company bosses poses some questions for remuneration committees about the design of their incentives.” “This time last year a number of companies actually reduced their bonus ceilings. Twelve months later, it appears as if these measures have been reversed, with around 40 companies reporting higher bonus scheme maxima.”

Britons without help buy first home at 37 BRITONS who do not get financial help from their parents will reach an average age of 37 before they are able to buy their first home. That is according to new research from the Home Builders Federation, which has again found most young people are being priced out of the housing market. The average first-time buyer has to save over £37,000 just to get a deposit for a new home. That means someone in their 20s on a normal salary would have to save every penny they earn for more than two years just to get a deposit. Those saving over five years would still have to put aside up to 45% of their income to cover the cost. New figures from the Land Registry show house prices fell by 0.2% in September, but they were still up by 5.2% year-on-year. However, Nationwide’s latest

update suggests worse is yet to come, as it has recorded a 0.7% dip in house prices this month. Despite this, the average price of a home in the UK is still £164,381 - way out of reach of many would-be buyers. Unsurprisingly London is the hardest place to get on the housing ladder, closely followed by the South East. Stewart Turner, from the Home Buyers Federation said: “First-time buyers are in a very difficult position obvi-

ously saving everything you earn for up to three years just isn’t possible when you have to pay rent, bills. “What we’re trying to do is illustrate the difficulties so we can try to get the Government to introduce policies that will enable more homes to be built, and put pressure on the lenders to start lending on more realistic terms.” The group said a typical firsttime buyer needed to save just over £37,000 to buy an aver-

age priced starter home but on average they earn less than half that amount at just £16,400 a year. The average age of someone buying their first home without help from their parents is now 37, with nearly a third of men and a fifth of women between 20 and 34 still living with their parents. In 2007, the number of firsttime buyers dropped to the lowest level for 30 years and since then the figures have failed to recover significantly.

The ex-president of Argentina mourned THOUSANDS of shocked people have gathered to pay tribute to former Argentina president Nestor Kirchner, who has died suddenly of a heart attack. His wife and current president Cristina Fernandez now faces the prospect of running for re-election without her closest adviser. Mr Kirchner, 60, who steered Argentina out of crisis and political instability with a left-wing populism that thrilled the poor and exasperated the wealthy, died with his wife by his side.

Page 12

His death abruptly ends a plan the couple had to keep succeeding each other and holding on to power for many years. With next year’s elections looming, Ms Fernandez will have to run for re-election without the charismatic party leader who kept a tight lid on the country’s unruly political scene. Mr Kirchner had a history of heart trouble, undergoing emergency surgery on his carotid artery in February and an angioplasty in September, but refused to slow down, campaigning daily to lay the political groundwork for another run at the presidency by him or his wife.

He suffered another heart attack early on Wednesday and was pronounced dead at 9.15am local time after efforts to revive him failed. Shocked Argentines filled Buenos Aires’ Plaza de Mayo outside the presidential palace. “He’s someone who for the first time in our democracy, turned his politics toward the workers and the people. That’s why so many are here. The plaza shows that the people will support and deepen his model,” said Juan Pablo Mazzieri, 39. Ms Fernandez, he said, “has the capacity to go it alone with all the people’s supSource Press port”. Association

Happy Take That The Apolo Centre announce a new tour as five-piece Car park NOW OPEN

The fully-reformed Take That have announced a new tour at a live news conference - their first as a five-piece for years. The tour starts in Sunderland on May 30 and will include four nights at the City of Manchester Stadium and four nights at London’s Wembley Stadium. European dates will follow, including gigs in Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands. It will be the band’s first tour with Robbie Williams since he returned to the fold this year, 15 years after going solo. At the news conference, Williams confirmed that he would be performing some of his solo material on the Progress tour, as would the other band members. Tickets for the UK concerts go on sale at 9am Friday.

Mark Owen joked that the tour was “the worst-kept secret, wasn’t it?”, adding that staff at London’s Savoy Hotel, where the conference was taking place, were asking about the shows before the announcement. The band told Sky News they were not planning to play this year’s Glastonbury, however, mainly due to the size and nature of their stage show. News of the tour follows hot on the heels of the group receiving the Q Hall of Fame award at a ceremony in London. Their new single, The Flood, will be released next month with new album Progress available later in the month. Picking up the Q Award, Williams said: “Very happy to be back. First day and we’ve won an award. “I’d like to thank my boys. Extremely happy here. Looking forward to the next

Web businesses are now worth £100bn to Britain The internet economy in the UK exports £2.80 for every £1 imported, a study commissioned by Google has shown. The sector now represents over 7% of GDP, more than utilities, transportation or even construction. Small and medium sized businesses proved to be the most active online and profited most from savvy use of the internet. One such firm is Scotweb, Scotland’s first web-only retailer that sells Scottish heritage items and features innovative online tools on its site, including a “design Your

Own Tartan” option. Nicholas Fiddes, founder of Scotweb, said, “The internet is a moving target, a social organism [which] allows widespread conversations with customers. “We began with kilts and bagpipes and now have extended out to knitwear, cashmere and gifts.” The research, conducted by Boston Group Consulting, showed that while offline economy exports only 90p for every pound imported, the online economy creates a trade surplus of £1.80 per pound. As a result of companies such as these, the UK now has the largest e-commerce market per capita in the

29 October 2010 - 04 November 2010

world, with the online advertising market second only to the United States. Well-known high street retailers are also growing their online presence as they continue to acknowledge the power of the internet, with John Lewis reporting a 36% increase in their online sales. The report highlighted that business-to-business trade online generated an additional £360bn last year. The future looks bright for the online sector, the report found. Internet consumption expected to increase 13% annually by 2015 as long as the UK’s broadband access targets are met.

Killer wave: The tsunami warning system ‘broken’ A SYSTEM set up to warn Indonesians about tsunamis was not working properly when a deadly wave struck the country earlier this week, according to an official. The revelation comes as the number of dead from Monday’s tragedy has risen to at least 311, with around 379 others still missing and 20,000 displaced. A three-metre high wall of water, trigged by a massive earthquake, struck the remote Mentawi islands off western Sumatra. Rescue officials, who had not been able to get to the area for days due to stormy seas and bad weather, have now started arriving at the scene to assess the devastation. The tsunami washed away hundreds of wooden and bamboo homes in 20 villages.

Page 14

Many areas were underwater and houses lay crumpled, with tyres and slabs of concrete piled up on the sand. The fault line on Sumatra island’s coast is the same one that caused the devastating quake and tsunami which

killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries around the Indian Ocean in 2004. After that killer wave, many countries set up early warning systems in their waters in an attempt to give people time to flee to higher ground

before a tsunami crashed ashore. Indonesia’s version has since fallen into such disrepair that it effectively stopped working about a month ago, according to the head of the Meteorology

and Geophysic Agency. The system, which uses buoys to electronically detect sudden changes in water level, worked when it was completed in 2008 - but by 2009 were showing problems, said agency chief Fauzi.

By last month, he claimed, the entire system was broken because of inexperienced operators. “We do not have the expertise to monitor the buoys to function as intended,” he said. As a result, he said, not a single siren sounded after Monday’s quake. It was unclear if any sirens could have made a difference, since the islands worst affected were so close to the epicentre that the tsunami would have reached them within minutes. Survivors said they had almost no warning that the three-metre wall of water was bearing down on them, despite the laying of the sophisticated network of alarm buoys. Meanwhile, about 800 miles to the east in central Java, the Mount Merapi volcano was mostly quiet but still a threat after Tuesday’s eruption. At least 33 people were killed and 17 others injured in that tragedy.

Which UK city is full of Facebook addicts? PEOPLE in Sunderland use Facebook more than anywhere else in the UK, according to a report. The study highlights the rising popularity of the social networking site and others such as Twitter and YouTube. The most prolific users can be found in the northeast and northwest of England, as well as in Wales, the research found. Social networking sites accounted for one in 10 internet visits in September - up 4% from the same month last year, overtaking search engines such as Google. Facebook attracts 55% of all

visits to social networking sites but others such as Vimeo, Badoo and tumblr have seen visits at least double in the last 12 months, the report said. Robin Goad, of online marketing specialist Experian Hitwise, which published the study, said online retailers are relying on social networking sites more than ever to attract customers. He said: "Social networks are rapidly becoming the nation's favourite online pastime." The report said: "Social media is not a fad, it is not a passing online trend and, whether we like it or not, social media is not going to go away."

Simples! The Meerkat’s tale tops best-seller list

Cops quiz Premier player over Rape Bolton Wanderers footballer Ivan Klasnic has been arrested and bailed on suspicion of raping a teenager. It is alleged a 17-year-old girl was sexual assaulted at an apartment in Manchester city centre early on Monday. The 30-year-old Croatian international was arrested and later released until 1st November 1 pending further inquiries. Reports said Klasnic was not at the address when the complaint was made. Greater Manchester Police has declined to give any fur-

ther details about the alleged incident. The former Nantes and Werder Bremen player has scored twice in four appearances for Bolton this season. He was sent off in his last match against Stoke on October 16 soon after hitting the winning goal. Klasnic is due to face Liverpool this week after serving a one-match suspension. A spokesman for Bolton Wanderers said the club had no comment to make.

Aleksandr the Meerkat is set to outsell former PM Tony Blair and ex-glamour model Katie Price when his autobiography is published this week. Amazon.co.uk says pre-sale orders of A Simples Life - My Life And Times are 165% ahead, putting the amazing meerkat on track for a bestselling book. Although demand has been high for Katie Price’s story You Only Live Once and Mr Blair’s A Journey, it has paled into insignificance compared with demand for the magnificent meerkat. Even though he started off as a fictitious furry character thought up by the VCCP

advertising agency as a fun diversion for its comparethemarket.com client, Aleksandr has now taken on a life of his own. Speaking exclusively to Sky News Online, the Moscowbased meerkat said: “My story of struggles, successes and Sergei is the greatest, most thrillsy book ever written by a meerkat in the bath. “With this book, I am hope to inspire the next generation of young businesskats. And with royalties I am hope to re-marble roof on Orlov family mansion. Please enjoyment.” To coincide with the publication and for two days only, Mr Orlov is opening a comparethemeerkat.com shop in London’s Regent Street. Fans will be able to see artifacts and portraits from the

meerkat’s home in the village of Meerkovo, near Moscow. Alexsandr himself will not be there because he is to “give talk at Moscow’s Velvety Dress and Dinner Time Etiquette convention”. But, he says: “Please have fun and enjoy future bestseller (and don’t touch artifacts)”. The meerkat’s autobiographical page on the website gives a brief insight into his success, after the hardships he and his family initially faced. The great grand-daddy of them all, Vitaly “I live and make my work in Moscow, where many generations of my family have thrive. My greatest grandfather, Vitaly, fought in the Meerkat Mongoose war of

1728. “My grandparents survived the Furry Terror of 1921. It is for honour of my family and meerkats all over the world that I make comparethemeerkat.com.” Amazon.co.uk’s Neil Campbell is delighted with the meerkat’s sucess. “Having won his chart battle with Katie Price, Aleksandr the Meerkat is quickly establishing himself as a strong contender for the bestselling autobiography of the year. “The demand for his book is so great that he has generated more pre-order sales than those achieved by Tony Blair’s A Journey and more than double the pre-orders of Cheryl Cole, Russell Brand and Dannii Minogue for their recent releases.”

Mother who stabbed and doused daughter in acid A WOMAN has been found guilty of stabbing her three-yearold daughter to death and pouring acid over her. Iman Omar Yousef, 25, was originally charged with murdering three-year-old Alia Jama but a judge at Birmingham Crown Court ruled that she was unfit to enter a plea and stand trial. The jury in this truly tragic and harrowing case has since concluded that Yousef

Page 16

unlawfully killed the child. The Somalian asylum seeker was said to suffer from paranoid schizophrenia. She saw people who were not there and heard voices in her head. In February this year she called 999 several times to complain that people were outside her home in Erdington, Birmingham, and she feared for her safety. Police said no one was seen to be threatening her. Two officers found the child to be happy and healthy and

Alia made drawings for them. But the next day the same officers were called back to the address by concerned relatives of Yousef after she turned up in Leicester without her daughter. After forcing their way in the Birmingham home they found the child lying on the floor covered in bin bags. Her body was in a state of decomposition and there were signs of multiple stab wounds. One officer thought he could smell sulphuric acid,

the other collapsed at the sight. It was suggested by the prosecution that she had tried to dissolve the body away. During two days of evidence the jury has heard that although Yousef had a serious mental problem she had also been a loving mother. The jury was asked not to consider the question of intent in their deliberations - just whether they were sure that she carried out the physical act of killing her daughter.

France prepares itself for another round of strikes

Cameron set for EU budget showdown DAVID CAMERON is in Brussels for a showdown with European leaders over the EU’s controversial proposal to increase its budget by 6%.

FRANCE is preparing for the latest round of strikes against austerity reforms. President Nicholas Sarkozy has refused to back down on his plans to raise the state retirement age from 60 to 62 despite weeks of protest, including strikes and sporadic rioting. The latest protests will combine marches in 100 cities with the country’s seventh nationwide strike. Each day of the strikes has cost the French economy an estimated £350m in lost production. The government is convinced, however, that it has finally turned a corner in the dispute and that the industrial action will lose its momentum because the controversial pensions reform bill has now passed through both houses of parliament. There are signs that support for the strikes is dwindling. Employees at most of the country’s oil refineries are now back at work, easing concerns over fuel shortages. The half-term school holidays may also result in fewer turning out than in previous protests. The French government is hoping that suggestions the demonstrations will simply fade away are accurate.

Page 18

Some union officials do appear to be conceding defeat but others, led by the more radical and left-wing CGT Union and with the support of students, have pledged to continue their industrial action. The CGT holds power in key areas including fuel depots, oil refineries and transport networks. Previous French governments have been forced to repeal laws after they have been sworn in. In 1995, pension changes were abandoned following protests and in 2006 former president Jacque Chirac passed a controversial hireand-fire employment law but was forced to abandon it weeks later. Mr Sarkozy’s hard line has reduced his approval rating to less than 30%, but he has insisted he will not back down. His view, it seems, is that there is no point in being ineffective as well as unpopular. His government insists that pension reform is the only way to tackle the budgetary problems. France has a generous welfare package with a short working week and early retirement. But with an aging population, Mr Sarkozy says his government can no longer afford to pay pensions over such a long period.

The Prime Minister spent Wednesday night on the phone to his French and German counterparts as part of his push to keep the EU’s budget as low as possible. Mr Cameron believes an increase would be irresponsible at a time when many member states are struggling to deal with deficits at home. The EU budget is currently about £107bn, with Germany the biggest contributor, followed by France, Italy and then the UK, MEPs want a 5.9% increase in next year’s budget, which would see the UK’s contribution rise by around £900m. However, it is set to be finalised at an increase of 2.9%, which Britain is expected to begrudgingly agree to. It means the UK will have to contribute at least another £400m to the European kitty. Ahead of his departure from Downing Street, Mr Cameron’s spokesman said: “Our focus is on preventing the 6% proposal... from going ahead. “In an ideal world we think the budget should be frozen or reduced. “It’s going to be difficult but we are focused on getting it down below 6%.” Mr Cameron’s efforts at the EU summit are likely to be hampered by a preoccupation with German-led proposals for a new treaty imposing strict fiscal discipline on Eurozone countries. The meeting in Brussels is likely to be dominated by the

“economic governance” agenda, with many smaller European countries railing against a deal cooked up by France and Germany at a bilateral summit last week. The “big two” want to ensure there are severe sanctions in the future for countries that breach budget deficit and debt limits. The Germans in particular believe the rules will not be credible unless they are enshrined in changes to the European treaties. The UK has negotiated what is described as a “carve-out”, ensuring sanctions could not apply to this country. But there is unease in Downing Street that a protracted European argument along the lines of the Lisbon Treaty could distract the EU

from what the UK views as more important priorities. In particular, Mr Cameron will try to persuade his European partners of the need to reflect the current painful financial realities faced by member nations in the EU budget. Earlier Mr Cameron described the proposed 5.9% rise as “completely unacceptable”. The budget is set to be finalised at somewhere between a 2.9% and a 6% increase. Given that Mr Cameron has made clear his own preference for a freeze or a cut, he will be sure to fight to ensure the final figure is somewhere at the lower end of the range. Beyond 2011, he will be

endeavouring to ensure budgets in future years do not hit the heights of 2011. The EU is now entering an 18-month period of negotiation to set the framework for the budgets of 2014-2020. The summit has provoked a flurry of excitement among Conservative Euro-sceptic MPs, sensing Europe as an issue might be resurrected. Mr Cameron will be keen to ensure that Brussels-related controversies do not become a significant diversion for the coalition administration. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Angela Merkel will visit Britian at the weekend, when she will meet the PM for further talks on the EU summit, along with other issues such as Afghanistan and the G20.

MARIANO E ZUNINO SIRI Understanding the Law Email: marianozunino@canarianweekly.com

ONE of our readers, an Irish national, has suggested that I try to explain why there are many laws and regulations in Spain. He also wants to know how can we distinguish between the “national authority”, the “autonomic authority” and the “local authority”. It is not an easy task, but I will do my best to summarise thousands of pages written in legal books. Remember that the information in this article is just a guide, and I hope you enjoy reading this as much I did writing it. Spanish law is included within the continental system, based basically on the written law (laws, regulations, by-laws, etc). It is a complex system that involves not only national laws but also Autonomic Community laws. The Constitution of Spain is “Law of the Laws”, which

Page 20

The law: Spanish and European means that is the Supreme Law which regulates the functioning of public bodies and the fundamental rights of the Spanish people, as well as the organisation and competencies of the different autonomous communities. All laws in Spain must be declared compatible with the Constitution (all laws that are not are declared null). However, it is clear that a public body is needed to regulate the fulfilment of this. The division of powers is an idea that appeared after the French Revolution. It is

applied by the election, by universal suffrage (right to vote) of representatives of the people in the Cortes Generales. This body exercises legislative power through two chambers, the Congress of Deputies and the Senate, which choose the Prime Minister (normally called “presidente del gobierno”) and control the actions of the executive power, which must obey the law. The third leg of this division is the “judicial power” (Courts) formed by “Juzgados” (the first step in the judicial system) going

up to the Supreme Court and Constitutional Court. The law can be divided in public law and private law: Spanish public law 1. Constitutional law: Related to the organisation of the constitutional bodies and the exercise of a citizen’s rights. 2. Administrative law: Regulates the organisation and functioning of the powers and bodies of the state, and its relations with individuals. 3. Criminal law: Regulates the punitive actions. 4. Process law: Regulates the legal proceedings. 5. Financial and tax law: Regulates the financing of the Spanish State and taxes applied to citizens. 6. International public law: These laws regulate the judicial relations between each state, and the other members of the international community. 7. European law: As Spain is a member of the EU, all Spanish law has to be adapted to the European regulations. There is a legal debate in relation to the supremacy of European Law over the Spanish Law. Spanish private law 1. Civil law: regulates the person, the family, personal assets, contractual relations and the extra contractual civil responsibility . 2. Commercial law: Collection of laws that regulate law relating to business, within the world of business. 3. Labour or social law: Regulates the relationships between employees and employers. Complaints about social security fall under public law. 4. International private law: Regulates the relationships between physical and judicial persons of different nationalities. Bear in mind that the Constitution is the supreme law, and all regulations behind the Constitution

have to follow the hierarchy (“jerarquía”). So behind the Constitution, there are “International Treaties”, “Strict sense law” (law created by the parliament and regulatory laws) and “Regulations”, created by the Executive Power. Besides this, the Spanish Constitution establishes the competency of Comunidades Autonomas concerning the regulation of certain areas, and the possibility of creating legal laws through their own Parliaments. In a procedure between the autonomous parliament and the national parliament, the Estatuto de Autonomia exists, which could be the

“Constitution” of the Comunidad Autonoma. Going back to EC law, there are some jurists who consider that the Constitution is higher than the European Law, while others think the contrary. This is always theory. In practice, the European Law has been considered in the same vein as the Constitution. In fact, all laws coming from the EU are directly applied in Spain, by virtue of European Union Treaty. Mariano Zunino Siri is a lawyer registered in the Tenerife Bar Association since 1991. His office is in Los Cristianos at Edificio Valdes Center Torre “A”, oficina 1, piso 2º. Phone: 922 794 412.

Joe is wide awake, and walking so tall THE DEBUT album of Joe McElderry, last year’s X-Factor winner, has had the biggest online preorder sales of any record this year, as his legion of fans couldn’t wait to get a copy of what is essentially a covers album. Simon Cowell was turned down by US rock band Journey when he approached them for permission to include Joe’s cover version on his new album Wide Awake. A bit harsh really, considering the resurgence of their Eighties hit Don’t Stop Believin’ charted after Joe’s version was aired on last

year’s X-Factor, before the Glee version even came out. Lead single Ambitions is a cover of the Norwegian band Donkeyboy’s song of the same name. They have never charted outside Scandinavia, so Cowell played it safer than his last cover of Miley Cyrus’s The Climb. Joe also covers Superman by Five for Fighting. The song became an unofficial anthem in the States after the 9/11 attacks, making No5 in the Irish chart at the time. Wide Awake is looking set to be the most successful debut album from an X-Factor winner so far. And unlike his attempt to top the Christmas hit parade, there is no Facebook campaign to scupper his chances of topping this Sunday’s album chart.

Cheryl’s performance doesn’t promise much!

CHERYL COLE looks set to score her second solo No1 single this Sunday, with Promise This likely to de-throne Bruno Mars Just The Way You Are (Amazing) from the top of the charts. The X Factor judge performed the song on last Sunday’s show and it went immediately to the top of The Big 40 download chart. It seems her fans either don’t notice when someone is miming, or just don’t care. Yet the furore that has erupted since her pre-record-

ed show-case was to be expected. After all, she did exactly the same thing last year when she debuted Fight for This Love on the show. Singing the middle eight and miming, or singing over recorded vocals for the rest, is just not good enough for a mentor. She should be setting an example to her understudies. Whether Cheryl performed it live in the studio, and then edited it before it was aired is neither here nor there because the contestants aren’t awarded the same privilege. Cheryl’s second solo album, Messy Little Raindrops, will be released on Monday (1st Nov).

Music police warning for downloaders THE music industry is receiving more assistance than ever before from the powers that be in finally putting an end to illegal downloading of music. After pleas from the major record labels, The British Phonographic Industry officials have promised to give financial assistance to legal websites, in a bid to turn the public away from piracy. They have also given record label Universal permission to sell CDs through BP petrol stations around the UK for Christmas. The record shop chain HMV are also opening new stores and pop-up stores across the UK. The US government has gone a step further and actually shut down the area of Limewires site, where illegal P2P (Person to Person) filesharing has for a decade been easy, and free of charge. A US judge has ordered www.LimeWire.com to shut down its P2P function completely, although it can continue to trade in the legal “shop” area. The New Yorkbased music download site has a history of unintentionally distributing Trojans and Malware, via its free file-sharing network. In one investigation, of the 123 files downloaded at random, 37 contained some sort of Malware, designed to either hack your private data, or maliciously damage the “gubbins” inside your PC. That’s 33% of songs, clips, videos etc, that users were sharing illegally with each other, eventually filtering down to me and you. French government officials

created an agency (Hadopi) last year to police internet law, including music piracy. They have ordered French music download websites to send 25,000 warning letters a day to suspected illegal filesharers, even to those people who consider downloading a song or two here and there innocent enough. If the providers of these websites do not conform, they will be fined 1,500 euros per IP address on their system.

In another move to combat illegal file-sharing, the French government will subsidise a “Carte Musique” download card scheme, with under-25s paying only half the 50-euro fee and the government paying the other half. These two moves are obviously designed to scare the passive downloader into going down the legal route in the future, which can only be good news for musicians. Imagine downloading just one song from any number of

sites we generally consider to be anonymous and undetectable, and then receiving a warning letter from your government stating that your IP address has been logged by the authorities for illegal use of the web. That would put the jitters up me for sure. The new urgency to stamp out piracy has seen an immediate impact, with the Kings of Leon recording the biggest sales week this year for an album. In the UK alone, 183,000 copies have been sold, and 49,000 of them were downloaded through legitimate, online music stores. Come Around Sundown is the American rockers’ fifth studio album and has made No1 in seven countries so far. And it hasn’t even been released in the States yet! The Followill family’s last release, Only By Night, was a global smash and the biggestselling album in the UK for 2008. It was boosted, no doubt, by the success of the single Sex on Fire, which is the second-most downloaded song ever in the UK.

JOE ‘IN MY OPINION’ FERGUSON Weekly Update Email: joe.ferguson@canarianweekly.com

Odd goings-on in Sesame Street IT’S weird the things that make you just want to shout out loud: “What is going on in the world?” Especially in these days of the politically-correct brigade. I have already gone off on one about this so don’t worry, I will not be repeating myself. But one story which needs to be looked at is this week’s one about producers of the children’s television show, Sesame Street, deciding to give into pressure from the people who, it seems, govern the way we all live. For years, we have all heard the jokes about the show’s two puppets, Bert and Ernie, being a gay couple. This all came about because, for some strange reason, it was in people’s heads that they slept together. I loved this show every Saturday morning as a kid and

Page 36

never questioned it. But I have to tell you now that, like the stupid remarks regarding the characters of the series Captain Pugwash being full of sexual innuendo, they are not gay. Bert and Ernie never slept together. They had separate, single beds in the same room. Clearly marked with the initials B and E. This was not because the puppets were portrayed as stupid, but because the producers did not want anyone thinking they were promoting homosexuality! Sponsorship has been around on American TV since its birth, so anything like that in the Seventies was frowned on. Yes, the jokes have always been around that they are a gay couple, but those jokes are all based on the mistake of thinking they slept together. Let’s look at it a bit deeper. In the comedy world, it has been around for decades. Laurel and

Hardy slept together at every opportunity! All for the sake of a good laugh. The classic episode of hiding the dog from the innkeeper and both trying to sleep in a small bed always has me in tears of laughter. Morecambe and Wise did a bed sketch every week of Eric reading his book and Ernie thinking of a play to write, and the conversations they struck up were priceless. At the end of the sketch they would say goodnight, turn the

light off and fall asleep. It was never questioned, which seems weird now thinking back, but that was the innocence of it all. Today, watching movies or programmes with a gay couple seem to be the norm. But let’s get back to word that sums all of this up: “Innocence.” The makers of Sesame Street do their job well. I can honestly say it helped growing up with numbers colours and having a bit of fun. That’s what being a kid means.

It’s when we get older that we have to deal with the big world, good and bad. My parents told me what was happening in Belfast because the blasts could be heard every night. I certainly didn’t get to hear about it on the kids’ shows. Producers say it’s only right, in light of what is happening in the world today, that these two puppets come out and show how proud they are to be gay. A whole episode will be devoted to the joys of them being gay. Okay, that’s fine in the real world, but Sesame Street is not real. It features a cast of puppets! It is made in a factory from blueprints, as the creator intended. If they are to have an entire episode dedicated to this “outing”, it goes down in my book as sexual education. And that, in my opinion, should be left to the parents to decide when and what to tell their children

about sex. It’s all gone crazy, really. Sexual freedom is good, and same-sex marriage is good. But not at the cost of something so innocent that a majority of youngsters have been brought up on. A few years ago, Sesame Street decided to warn about the dangers of AIDS. That show did not go down well. All these subjects should be brought to the attention of the ignorant homophobics, and those who do not practise safe sex. But please, not during a classic children’s TV show. Leave Bert and Ernie alone and let kids laugh at the mayhem they have been creating for decades. Gay or straight should NOT be an issue in all walks of life. And children’s TV shows are an escape for a few years before the kids grow up and see the world through their own eyes. Joe

Creating bedroom tranquility… YOUR bedroom should be an oasis of peace and tranquility, so that you can get optimum rest and relaxation there. For many of us, this just doesn’t happen because life gets in the way. However, it is true that you may be calmer in a tidier environment, and although your life may still be chaos, at least it will be organised chaos! In the photo, you can see a bedroom clutter-free and neat. But how can you make sure that it stays that way? Here are a few tips to help: Make the most of your wardrobe space. If there isn’t enough, try to store out-ofseason clothing elsewhere under the bed, or in another room - and rotate it with the seasons. This means the wardrobe won’t be spilling out into the room with clothes you don’t need at the moment, and finding individual items will be easier. Use shoe racks to maximise the usage of space and make the wardrobe more ordered. Select side tables with a drawer or two, so you can put the little things you need beside your bed every night, somewhere out of sight.

12bn-a-year savings secrets of the banks

Have decorative boxes of varying sizes to store things in, like jewellery, scarves, magazines, hats (hat boxes work well for storage) and handbags. These can be stacked in a decorative form in a corner. Have a laundry basket, and make sure it is in keeping with the bedroom design, in a discreet place. This makes sure you place all your dirty clothes out of the way and they don’t pile up on the lovely chair you have but can never use! Don’t allow too many “things” to be placed on top

of dressers and drawers. Choose a few select pieces as features, and put the rest away. Too many can look cluttered and be a distraction from dusting, which probably means you won’t do it! Bookcases are great because you can use these in multiple ways. The obvious is for storing books, and next, you can buy small containers to sit on the shelves. You can then place the bits and pieces which have no home in them, nice and tidy. You can use cardboard boxes and decorate them, rattan boxes

- anything that fits your theme or design. Under-bed storage is brilliant. The type of bed shown in the picture is perfect for storing bulky things like extra pillows, blankets, boxes of photos, etc. The mechanism is hydraulic and lifts up effortlessly without removing the mattress or the bedclothes. If this is not a possibility for you, I recommend investing in a storage unit that has wheels (there are numerous types available). If you have the space under the bed, and it isn’t visible (covered by the bed covers,

BRITAIN’S savers are missing out on £12 billion a year because smart-thinking banks are keeping us in the dark about miserly interest rates. Yet, if those with easyaccess and notice savings accounts and cash ISAs had moved their money to bestrate versions of those accounts, they would be £12bn a year better off. New research by consumer champion Which? found that almost half of the 1,200-plus savings accounts in the UK pay 0.5% interest or less - and one in four pays 0.1% or under, which is only £1 a year for every £1,000 saved. Which? even found that the Ulster Bank’s Easy Access Savings Account, and Newcastle Building Society’s Nova Plus Issue 3 Account, pays a meagre 0.01% which, astonishingly, is an annual return of 10p for every £1,000 saved. Banks tend to bury these poor returns in small print, with few even showing interest rates anywhere on regular statements, or telling customers about better accounts. Now, Which? is pressing for change and has already secured a commitment from Royal Bank of Scotland, Lloyds Banking Group and Santander to improve the information for customers. In light of the Which? report, people acting right away could add hundreds of pounds a year to

their savings in just a few minutes. Using the unique Which? Savings Booster www.which.co.uk/savingsbooster - savers can see at a glance what interest their account is paying, and whether a better rate is available elsewhere. Peter Vicary-Smith, Which? chief executive, said: “Banks are depriving British savers of £12bn a year by keeping us in the dark about the pitiful interest paid on hundreds of savings accounts. “While we pressure the banks to be more upfront about their rates, people can take action and, potentially, add hundreds of pounds a year to their savings by moving the money to a better account.” For details of Best Rate savings accounts, visit www.which.co.uk/savings Which? is pressing banks to Publish interest rates on all statements, paper and onlin Clearly display all savings account interest rates online no more than one prominent link away from the savings home page Provide each customer with an annual notice of savings interest rates, which should include: Current interest rates for all accounts offered by the provider, even those accounts closed to new customers Show in pounds and pence how much savers would earn in each account if they had £1,000, £5,000 or £10,000

DAVID HUDGELL Getting to the root of your gardening problems! Email: David.hudgell@canarianweekly.com

AN American man has grown a huge pumpkin that tips the scales at 821kg (1,810.5lbs), which could find its way into the Guinness Book if Records. Chris Stevens, a 32-year-old farmer from New Richmond, Wisconsin, delivered his giant vegetable to a Harvest Festival last week and won his class easily! A champion pumpkin-carver will cut faces into the pumpkin, which will then go on display. It has enough flesh to make 900 pumpkin pies, though it will probably be turned into compost, with Mr Stevens retaining the seeds for another crack next year. “I had a good year in 2009 as well and, hopefully, I can keep up this standard for several years to come,” said Mr Stevens. “I’m hoping this one is a world record.” He delivered the pumpkin from his farm, driving slowly the whole way because he was afraid a sudden stop could send the one-ton pumpkin crashing into the cab of his truck. And what’s his secret formula for growing outrageous pumpkins? A precise mixture of sunshine, rain, cow manure, fish emulsion and seaweed! Meanwhile, Michelle Obama, America’s First Lady, has spent a day picking pumpkins from her own, famous, White House kitchen garden, helped by some schoolkids. The President’s wife invited a group of lucky students from local schools in Washington to

What a whopper, and Mrs Obama finds lots of pumpkins at home!

give her a hand. And the group were soon busy, picking pumpkins and a variety of other vegetables using spades and pitchforks. Mrs Obama, 46, was dressed perfectly for autumn in her

black anorak, black trousers, black boots and a pair of bright-yellow gardening gloves. She entered into the festivities with enthusiasm, tasting the vegetables and helping the kids weigh them. And she

wasn’t afraid to put some of her famous muscle into it, either. At one point, the First Lady grabbed a pitchfork and proceeded to dig into the dirt on the south lawn of the White

House. The harvest was part of her “Let’s Move” campaign, which is targeting childhood obesity in the States. “The physical and emotional health of an entire generation, and the economic health

and security of our nation, is at stake,” she said. “This isn’t the kind of problem that can be solved overnight, but with everyone working together, it can be solved. So, let’s move!”

Grow pumpkins and you can grow anything at all! THERE’S an old saying that to be a successful gardener, you have to be able to grow pumpkins. And all you need is a packet of pumpkin seeds! But it is not quite as simple as that. Almost any pumpkin seed, ultimately, will produce pumpkins. The important question is: what kind do you want to grow? The traditional Jack O’Lantern is a particular variety officially known as the Field Pumpkin. They are usually between 10-20lbs each,

although they can grow as big as 50lbs, and have a bright orange colour with a classic pumpkin shape. It is the picture-book pumpkin - the one produced by most commercial growers. It is used not only for cooking but for scooping out the contents and carving masks out of the outer “skin” for Halloween’s Day. Looks aside, this variety is plain-tasting, not especially sweet, and somewhat watery for making pies, which is mainly a tradition in Canada and America. Whatever the taste, it is exciting to grow them from

29 October 2010 - 04 November 2010

seeds saved from last year’s pumpkins. But you must be sure the seeds are dried in the air and not the oven. Pumpkins love a sunny spot, and the more sun the better, which makes Tenerife an ideal place to obtain the best results. Choose a place that gets at least six hours of direct sunlight every day. Seeds can be planted directly in the garden, or even started indoors if you are sowing them in the UK. Pumpkins seeds, typically, are planted in the middle of earth mounds, about three 3ft in diameter. Surround each hill with a moat (about

4ins wide and 4ins deep) to help contain water around the roots. Plant 4-5 seeds in a circle in the middle of the hill, and space the seeds about 68 inches apart. Traditionally, the seed is laid on its side, narrow edge skyward. Soaking the seeds the night before planting will soften the outer shell and make sprouting easier and faster.. Cover the seeds with about an inch of soil to block out light, and hide them from hungry birds. The soil should be loosely packed and kept moist, but not wet, like a well-squeezed, damp sponge. During the seed stage,

water gently with a sprinkling can to avoid washing away the covering soil. Don’t peek under the soil or you may disturb the delicate root hairs that are forming. After a week or two, the seed sprout cracks the soil, and within a day, oval. baby leaves break through and unfold like a pair of opening hands, which soon look like low-flying butterflies. Once the seedlings are established (two weeks after they have sprouted), thin two or three of the strongest and largest young plants. About a week after the two baby leaves appear, the first

“true” leaf, sporting jagged edges, starts to grow from the centre of the young sprout, providing a glimpse of the plant to come. After three true leaves are established, the pumpkin plant moves into wild and crazy leaf and root development that lasts about eight weeks. At its peak, the vine can grow as much as 6ins a day. Ten weeks after planting, the first flowers suddenly appear between leaves and tendrils, but each flower blooms for only one day. Then watch as the fruit forms and grows, day by day into a sizeable offering.

CARL PATTISON from Robot, answers your hair questions

Untangling salon jargon

red, nge

YOU’VE often been in the salon and had stylists telling you what they are going to do, and what techniques they are going to use. But do you understand them, and are you just agreeing to something you don’t know anything about? Worry no more …learn from my dictionary of salon jargon and never be lost again. CUTTING Club cutting A basic form of cutting hair, giving no texture or volume to it. The sections taken are literally cut blunt to create straight lines throughout the hair. Normally used on bobs or when layering very broken hair to create strength on the ends. Texturising The sections of hair are cut into at different levels by the points of the scissors to take away volume, create volume, break up a heavy section of hair or generally give a soft look to any haircut. Not to be used on very fine or broken hair, and it can weaken the tips. Graduating Normally, an expression used to explain that the hair will go from a shorter point to a gradual, heavier area. Best explained as in a “graduated bob”, but is also used with longer layers. Not a great cut for fine hair, as this cut is used to show bulk and volume. Best used on mediumto-thick hair. Razor cutting With this method the hair (whether thick or thin) is texturised and “broken up” by slicing out sections of it to create a soft, feathery look. Can be used on short or

Page 40

longer hair. Care must be taken when using this method because I’ve seen hair ruined with this technique. Some stylists tend to “overuse” this, resulting in thick roots and extremely fine ends. Not great, either, for curly hair as it mis-forms the curls and can end up looking frizzy. Thinning scissors As it says, this method removes bulk only. Great if you have too much hair. Care should be taken not to use near the hairline or partings as this will show as broken hair. If you have very thick hair, this method can reduce your drying time by half. COLOURING Full colour This method completely eliminates your own hair colour. This is placed on your scalp and can take your colour darker, or lighter, redder or more coppery. Your tone will be quite uniform and is normally used to cover greys, or for or anyone wanting to get rid of his/her natural hair colour. This colour needs re-touching after a few weeks as a re-

growth soon appears. Foil Colouring Used to lighten or darken sections of the hair to produce strands of colour. Gives a more natural look as your own natural hair tone is left behind. Any amount of shades can be used to create the most natural of looks. This colour needs a lot less upkeep because it blends more with the natural hair. It doesn’t give total coverage, as with a full colour. Comb-on colour Colour or colours are literally painted freehand into your hair (normally short hair is best) to produce a very natural look. Great if you want a little colour with not much upkeep, because this method doesn’t give a total coverage. Colour bath As in a full head, colour gives total coverage but lasts only a few washes. Not great for more than 10% grey hair as this colour is very weak and won’t cover those strong, white hairs. Also, the colours are limited because you can achieve only darker, redder or coppery shades. Blonde is achievable, but only on a very grey base. Care must be used with this type of colouring as constant use can result in a permanent colour. As with all my advice, if you don’t understand what’s happening in the salon, please speak out. Nothing upsets us more than the client nodding all the way through an appointment, only for us to be told: “I don’t like it!” Enjoy your time in the salon, be part of the work and get involved. It keeps us on our toes and makes our job that much easier.

When it comes to the crunch…

Q. I do crunches religiously, but I don’t seem to get more toned in my abdominal region. What’s my problem? A. You may need to spend less time doing crunches and more time on the treadmill, stair-climber, or stationary bike. Contrary to popular belief, abdominal toning doesn’t come from doing a million crunches. In fact, you may already have abs of steel, and they may just be covered by a layer of fat. So, instead of doing 10-15 minutes of crunches, try doing 3-5 minutes of exercises targeting different abdominal muscles, as well as your lower back. Focus on using good form and really tightening those muscles, and then spend the extra 5-7 minutes burning fat with a cardio activity. Q. What is a good snack to have before a moderately intense workout? I’m looking for a food choice that will

give me energy and keep my blood sugar on an even keel. A. Foods high in complex carbohydrates, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole-grain bread, rice, or pasta, are excellent pre-exercise snacks. These carbs enter your bloodstream slowly and help you avoid sugar crashes. The crashes can occur when you eat snacks made with simple sugars, such as sweets. Many energy bars are loaded with complex carbs, but can be high in calories. Exactly how much you should eat before working out is really a personal thing. Some people can consume a large meal just before exercising and not experience any problems, while others can barely eat half an apple without getting sick during their workout. This is really something you need to experiment with to find out what, when, and

how much of a snack works best for you. Q. When walking on a treadmill, which is better: increasing the time or the incline? A. Both are helpful. And that’s what interval training is all about: changing the level of intensity both by speed (faster and slower), as well as changing the incline. Both are great. The best way is to mix it up. Devise your own programme and break down the time spent on a cardio machine in high and low intensities, adding in the odd incline. Both work, and combining the two in a workout is the best. Q. I love walking, but when I walk at a fast pace my shins really start to hurt. What can I do to stop the pain? A. Firstly, make sure your walking shoes have good arch support, since shin splints often happen because of a fallen arch or flat feet. Also, try to avoid walking hills until you’ve walked on a flat surface for at least five minutes. This will warm up your shins so they don’t become overstressed. If you want to strengthen your shins, here’s an easy towel exercise you can do! Sit in a chair, your feet bare, and place a rolled-up towel just in front of your toes. Grab the towel between your toes and your forefeet and unroll it, flexing the arches of your feet at the same time. Try to do this for 1-30 seconds every other day. It will help you keep up the good work and stay fit.

Laptops, a pain in the neck! LAPTOP computers are obviously designed to be used anywhere , on the train, in the air and even on a park bench. They are now outselling PCs, and more than five million are in use in Britain alone. Yet they are said to be causing a big rise in neck and back problems because they encourage poor posture. Hunching over a laptop for hours on end puts users at risk of a whole range of upper-body aches and pains. “These devices are incredibly useful, but they must be used sensibly,” says Tim Hutchful, from the British Chiropractic Association. “Laptops are designed to be

used for short periods only. “But many people spend hours at a time on their laptops, and they are now being used in the home as substitutes for desk computers.” The problem is that laptops do not have a separate separate keyboard and monitor, and users are forced to hunch over and look down to view the screen. “If you bend forward, it places a huge load on the neck,

shoulders, arms and back,” said Tim. “The average weight of a human head is 8-10lbs, and you don’t have to bend over a laptop for too long to begin placing strain on the muscles by overloading them. “It might feel comfortable at first, but over time it causes problems because the spine is designed to be upright. Using a laptop almost forces you into bad posture by making the spine

C-shaped.” Long-term problems include chronic nerve damage to the spine, neck, shoulders and arms, while slippeddiscs are another issue. Resting wrists on the edge of a laptop can damage tendons, and even leg pain can be a result of poor posture. Doctors also say they are treating increasing numbers of schoolchildren, yet there are ways to avoid discomfort. To maintain good posture while using a laptop, you should: sit back in your chair, keep your ears directly over the shoulders and the shoulders over the hips. Screens should be at eye level. But for regular laptop users, that means buying a stand and separate keyboard and mouse if you intend to be working for long periods. Just one hour a day working on a laptop can cause problems, especially if we adopt bad habits. If you work from home or are a heavy computer user it is worth

asking a physiotherapist or chiropractor to come in to make sure everything is properly set up. It is also important to take breaks about every 40 minutes, says Tim. He suggests setting the timer on the cooker which will force you to leave your seat. Moving around refreshes the flow of blood to muscles. Drinking lots of water is also good for the muscles and has an added benefit in that you are more likely to take toilet breaks. Another recommendation is to take frequent “micro breaks”. Sit back in your chair for a few seconds, shrug your shoulders a few times and allow your arms to drop down to the side of your chair. This will help ensure the upper body isn’t in the same position for too long. A lso to be avoided is doing work while you are sitting on the sofa. Working at the dining room table is better but ideally you should invest in a proper office chair which

can be adjusted. If you use a phone while working invest in a headset so that you are not tempted to wedge the receiver under your chin while taking notes. In the same way that wearing high heels can cause the calf muscles to shorten, over time this can cause the neck muscles to shorten because more load is being placed on one side of the spine. Bad laptop habits can also increase the likelihood of other everyday activities causing injury. Something seemingly innocuous such as pruning the roses or a session at the gym may be blamed for upper-body aches and pains when in fact it’s merely exacerbating problems caused by poor posture. If you do start to experience pain in the neck and shoulders don’t be tempted to roll your neck as this may only make the problem worse. The neck is designed to turn left or right, not roll.

Dodgy drug just not your cup of tea! HERBAL medicines marketed as slimming aids include a drug which has been withdrawn in Europe and US on safety grounds. Analysis of Payouji tea and Pai You Guo Slim capsules by the UK medicines watchdog revealed they contained the diet drug sibutramine. It was taken off the market in January by the EU over concerns that it increased the risk of heart attack and stroke. Those taking the drug were urged to stop and consult their doctor. Sibutramine was first approved as an anti-obesity

drug in 1997, but data from recent studies suggests a higher rate of heart attacks and strokes among people taking it. While it was withdrawn in Europe in January, it was dropped in the US earlier this month. Various herbal products in the US have been recalled because they were found to contain the drug. The Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Authority, which oversees medicines in Britain, said that any product containing the drug was considered “harmful to human health”. The watchdog said that apart from side-effects,

29 October 2010 - 04 November 2010

including high blood pressure, seizures, heart attacks or strokes, it could also interfere with other prescription medicines. Richard Woodfield, head of MHRA’s herbal policy, said: “People need to be aware that Payouji tea and Pai You Guo Slim Capsules are unli-

cenced herbal medicines and, therefore, have not met assured standards.” Anyone experiencing sideeffects after taking a herbal medicine can report it to the MHRA using its Yellow Card Scheme (0808 100 3352), The US Food and Drug Administration had already issued a number of warnings over supposedly natural or herbal products containing sibutramine, which are often marketed over the internet using misleading or false claims. The agency has also issued warnings over dozens of other supposed slimming aids containing potentiallydangerous ingredients.

Hacienda Miranda Restaurant Review There are some countries that need to be experienced with an open mind when it comes to the local cuisine. Rural China springs to mind. But then, there are some places where the food is exactly how you hoped or expected it to be. America, France and … Mexico! I love Mexico. I’m sure it’s because of the “poor guy done good” feel portrayed by their international heroes. I’m thinking more Erik Morales than Zorro, but you get my drift. What is there not to like about Mexico? The fiery women, tasty beer, tequila and the food. My, oh my, the food! So as you can imagine, I was looking forward to my first visit to the Hacienda Miranda in the Safari Centre in central Las Americas. Normally, when I go to review a restaurant, I have a fair idea of what is in store, but the Hacienda Miranda presented a blank canvas. This led to surprise No1. It was really busy. And I mean busy. Every table was taken and, unlike most restaurants, they were not cut from the same cloth. There were several large parties on work dos, double dates, finalnight posses and lots of families. This gave the Hacienda Miranda a wonderful, vibrant feel. That’s not to say it was loud and raucous. The atmosphere was fun and the beginning of a fine evening. How do you start your meal at a Mexican restaurant? With a margarita! I’m a cocktail snob, but our drinks were perfect. Margaritas should have that tequila taste, and ours certainly did. Once we were seated, we were dealt surprise No2. Most restaurants have large and varied menus these days, but few have the depth of this menu. There are literally hundreds of different dishes and combinations to try.

Page 42

It’s easy to see why the Hacienda Miranda is so popular with families and parties as there is just so much choice. Whether you are a Mexican master or a firsttime novice, there is something to suit all palates. My dining companion has never had the widest dining horizon, but he loved this menu. We went for the mixed platter starter, which was full of the traditional goodies: Tacos, nachos, burritos and the most deliciousstuffed Mexican mushrooms. They were worth the visit

alone, but then came the Buffalo wings. Everyone loves Buffalo wings, and these were another delight. Big (there is nothing worse than a small wing) and tasty with the most tangy, sticky, mouth-whetting sauce. It was so good that I asked our friendly Italian waitress if I could have a sauce doggy bag Main course was the shared sizzling beef and chicken hotplate fajitas. Mexican food is all about using your hands and being creative. Crunchy bell peppers, sour cream and the right amount of spices, with moist beef and chicken all wrapped up with heavenly guacamole. It’s a winning combination. Which led to surprise No3. We couldn’t eat it all! I can eat and so can my friend. But the white flags of surrender had to come out. Like with Indian food, portion

sizes are important with Mexican meals and, after surveying our fellow dinners, Hacienda Miranda has got this spot on. The wine list is decent, rest rooms clean and the staff were friendly and efficient. Which brings me back to the beginning. Hacienda Miranda is a friendly, fun restaurant that will give you real quality alongside the value for money. It’s great for families but not in a way that alienates others. With the vast menu and different taste options, it’s a great place for large gatherings and, I’m sure, the perfect venue for Christmas parties. Hacienda Miranda has been open since 2004, and it’s easy to see why it is so popular. Based in the popular Safari Centre, it’s hardly a hidden gem, but it is quite a find. And that was surprise No4!

Sudoku - X

The rules of sudoku X are simple - just enter the numbers 1 - 9 once in each row, column and 3 x 3 square within the sudoku X puzzle grid. In addition to standard sudoku, the numbers must only occur once in each side of the 'X' that is marked on the grid. Use logic alone to deduce where each of these numbers must be placed in every cell of a puzzle. Don’t worry! We´ve kept in two original sudokus for you on the right.

Travel THE airline industry has backed British Airways chairman Martin Broughton, who believes the US should not lay down the rules about security checks. He said Britain should stop “kow-towing” to America’s demands and added that some parts of the security programme were “completely redundant”. “People should not be forced to take off their shoes, or have laptops checked separately, when checking in for flights,” he said. He also stressed that there was no need to obey the Americans when it involved checks they did not impose on their own domestic routes. Mr Broughton, also chairman of Liverpool FC, said: “We should say, ‘We’ll only do things which we consider to be essential, and that you Americans also consider essential’. “We all know there are quite a number of elements in the security programme which are completely redundant and they should be sorted out.” Mike Carrivick, chief executive of Bar UK, which represents more than 80 scheduled airlines in the UK, agrees

Page 44

BA chief hits at US over too many security checks

that the issue of airport security needs to be addressed. “There seems to be a layered approach to security at airports,” he said. “Every time there is a new security scare, an extra layer is added on to procedures. We need to step back and have a look at the whole situation. “Standards change fairly regularly, and this puts pressure on airports and airlines.

We need to decide what we are trying to do, and how best to do it.” Colin Matthews, chief executive of airport operator BAA, believes passengers would be better served if checks were rationalised. “What we do in security at Heathrow and other airports is defined by the authorities, and it’s really one requirement laid on top of another,”

he said. We could certainly do a better job for customers if we could rationalise them. “There are some aspects which have been frustrating to everyone but, equally, everyone understands we have to keep the passengers safe.” Amy Lewis, of Sky News, said Department for Transport officials had indicated that they were working

on a new security framework, and that more details would emerge in the coming months. Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said of the concerns about airport security: “It will remain a continuing challenge to the industry.” He added: “I intend to develop a new regulatory system, which frees up operators to devise the security processes

needed to deliver them, in line with EU requirements.” Airport security around the world has increased since 9/11, and the US further tightened checks in January, weeks after the alleged Christmas Day bomb plot for which a man has been charged. These included pat-down searches of the body, and carry-on baggage checks for passengers arriving from 14 nations considered by authorities to be security risks. BA chairman Mr Broughton, speaking at the UK Airport Operators Association’s annual conference in London, agreed that no one wanted poor security. But he added: “There is quite a number of elements in the security programme which are completely redundant, and they should be sorted out.” For instance, he highlighted confusion over whether the iPad was a laptop or not, thereby requiring further examination, as an example of inconsistencies.

ON THE ROAD WITH JAV Behind the Wheel Email: Jav@canarianweekly.com

Battery-powered Volt is set to light up the scene THE Chevrolet Volt, which can travel up to 50 miles on battery power alone, appears to be a genuine look into the future. Chevrolet are the first maker to bring a serious series-production, battery-powered car to the market. And they have, arguably, come up with the most technically-intriguing solution. General Motors insist the Volt is not a hybrid but an “extended-range, electric vehicle”, making it the first batterypowered car in production that won’t leave the driver stranded at the side of the road. The company’s recent announcement on the innerworkings of the Volt’s complex powertrain caused consternation in the US over how the car

BMW is planning a sporting version of the second-generation X3 with its own, distinctive look. The car, depicted here in Autocar Magazine’s exclusive computer-generated rendering, will extend BMW’s already strong presence within the tough, premium SUV market. The new four-seater, though smaller and more agile than the X3, is expected to be badged X4 when it goes on sale in 2014. And, in keeping with the new four-wheel-drive’s sporting brief, BMW’s plans also call for a range-topping X4 M version, previewed in our rendering.

should be classified. But GM argue that the Volt’s unique layout offers the potential to be a purely battery-powered commute during the week, and a frugal, mostly petrol-powered, machine for longer journeys at the weekend. This machine is based on GM’s new Delta platform, which also underpins the new Astra and Chevy Cruze. It uses the same basic McPherson suspension. The Volt also gets unique, lightweight wheels and specific Goodyear low-friction tyres. There’s virtually no noise when you press the illuminated start button, and you have only to pull the clunky shift lever into ‘D’ mode to make a silent getaway. The smooth torque of the electric motors does a surprisingly good job of disguising the Volt’s 1715kg kerb weight. However, like the Prius, the

Chevy seems to encourage the driver to flow along gently, rather than to push ahead. When the battery is dead, the Volt can pull away on the battery’s buffer store, and then the engine cuts quietly at around 20mph to power-up the motor/generator. Only under hard acceleration above the 50mph point is the engine properly audible and overall, the Volt is easy and breezy, as befits a car tuned entirely for frugality. And while the exterior looks futuristic, it’s the interior

atmosphere which really impresses. The cabin, a strict four-seater because the battery intrudes in the shape of a large centre tunnel, is light and airy, with a fine view forward through the front doors and windscreen, as well as rearwards, over the driver’s shoulder. The dashboard layout successfully embraces the Volt’s clean-sheet running gear, using two LCD screens, which deliver tons of graphic information. While the Volt has crawled from the wreckage of GM as an

extremely innovative and complete machine, there are big question marks over this type of car. It is expensive for what amounts to a car that can travel, pollution-free, for around 40 miles using inexpensive domestic electricity. Yet many regular commuters will probably never use the engine in anger. In petrol/generator mode on the motorway, however, the Volt will probably return only around 40-45mpg. For European buyers, a dieselpowered Astra will be much cheaper to buy, better to drive and probably more economical. But anyone enthusiastic about the car industry should rejoice that the Volt exists. It is an extremely clever and remarkably well-thought machine. And it is a credit to a company who managed to develop it

while undergoing a bankruptcy that reverberated around the world. However, whether you consider the Volt an electric vehicle or a plug-in hybrid is a matter of perspective. It has certainly caused a stir in the US. Car industry big-wigs say Chevrolet have stretched the truth, because the Volt has a petrol engine which helps power the car. That means, technically, some will consider it a plug-in hybrid. The Chevrolet Volt 1.4 goes on sale towards the end of the year at a cost of 28.123 euros (£25,000). It can travel 062mph in 8.9secs. It has a top speed of 100mph, with economy up to 50 miles on one battery charge, plus an estimated 41.1mpg average on engine/generator; CO2 emissions.

BMW’s distinctive new look The X4 has been conceived along similar lines to the successful X6, some 112,500 of which have now rolled out of BMW’s Spartanburg factory in North America, placing it well ahead of earlier sales targets. On-going investment and expansion at Spartanburg have increased its annual capacity from 160,000 to 240,000, providing the necessary scope for North American production of the future X4. Although the X4 shares the same floorpan, drivelines, chassis and hard points as the X3, it will have its own individ-

29 October 2010 - 04 November 2010

ual styling to give it a more sporting image. That will allow BMW to position it higher than the SUV upon which it is based. Those who have seen the latest design proposals suggest that the X4 differs from the X3 in much the same way that the X6 is distinguished from the X5, with a bullish front end, curved coupé-style roofline and heavily angled

tailgate. “The design is not finalised, but we know the direction and it will likely surprise,” said an insider. As with its larger sibling, the exterior design changes will make it less practical than its more upright sibling, with reductions in headroom and luggage capacity. However, strong sales of the X6 have convinced BMW bosses that customers are

prepared to forgo everyday usability in the name of style. The car is also depicted in a pair of official BMW sketches. Although they reveal a threedoor model badged X3, they hint strongly at the X4’s design, mainly its roofline and front-end styling. And BMW sources insist that we shouldn’t read too much into Read more on the BMW X4 BMW’s answer to the new

three-door Porsche Cajun, set to launch in 2013 was first proposed by in-house designers back in 2006. However, capacity concerns at Magna in Austria, where the first X3 was made, led BMW postponing a decision on the car’s future until production switched to Spartanburg, which happened with the second-generation X3.

Cordoba 2 CD Tenerife 2 Someone said to me, ‘To you, football is a matter of life or death!’ and I said, ‘Listen, it’s more important than that’.” - Bill Shankly 1981. I thought of this often-misquoted remark when I heard what had happened to Miguel Garcia. A few weeks ago, the ex-Las Palmas midfielder had a stormer for his new team Salamanca as they deservedly beat CD Tenerife in Santa Cruz. He was like a terrier with his jaws wrapped around a tossed bone. I’ve always had a soft spot for his type of player. I do like a good midfield enforcer. It’s a lost talent in the modern game. Garcia took the usual stick which befalls a former Las Palmas player, but he took it well and channelled it into his game. He had Tenerife midfielder Ricardo in his pocket the whole afternoon. Last Saturday, his Salamanca side were trailing 2-0 at home to fellow high-flyers Real Betis. The visitors had taken their chances, but Salamanca were very much in the match. On the hour mark, Garcia slumped to the ground. There wasn’t a soul around him. The players and then the referee swiftly realised something was wrong. Very wrong. The club physio and Red Cross assistants sprinted to help the stricken player. There was no pulse. Nothing. The club doctor said at a press conference this week that Garcia had died for 25 seconds. Miraculously, the player’s heart started beating again, thank God for defibrillators, and he was rushed to hospital, where he remains today. He will stay in hospital for a while yet, and his football career is over. But that is a minor consideration. Unlike Marc Vivien Foe and Antonio Puerta, he is alive.

Page 46

Garcia’s incident draws reflection

Miguel Garcia collapses

There are plenty of questions that need answering. Why did the referee allow the match to restart, when the players were in no state to continue? How did the club’s medical staff miss a heart defect? Garcia’s collapse puts everything into context. The loss of a match, or even relegation, is not a tragedy or a disaster. It’s only a pastime. Even if it

doesn’t feel like it at the time. So Tenerife’s latest winless display avoids any of the usual cliches. Their draw in Cordoba was very much a point gained after being two goals down. Iriome played well as the lone striker in place of the injured Nino, but it’s a joke that a right-winger is the only attacking option when the striker is injured. Can you

imagine any side in Britain having a squad containing just one attacker? We will come back to that in a moment. Mikel Alonso, with his third goal in as many games, and a rare Natalio strike, gave Tenerife a point and made it two matches unbeaten. It doesn’t sound much, but it’s a start when you are rock-

bottom. Tenerife now have successive home matches, starting this Sunday with another tasty encounter against Elche. After Las Palmas, this is one of the matches which has seen the most needle in recent seasons. Two seasons back, Tenerife edged a thriller 4-2 in a badtempered affair. Former Tenerife winger Santos singlehandedly turned the Heliodoro into a cauldron of hate, and he will be a massive villain if he plays on Sunday. Let’s hope so! Elche have had an up-anddown start to the season. There is no doubt they have a squad good enough to challenge for promotion, but they do struggle on the road. Solid home wins over Ponferradina and Albacete have been couple with defeats at Numancia and Barca B. They did, of course, knock Tenerife out of the Copa del Rey on penalties, but both sides were far from full strength. Just like the Numancia match a fortnight back, there is an “old boys” feel to this fixture. The aforementioned Santos returns, as does striker Angel Rodriguez. The popular Tenerife-born youngster turned down a new contract in Santa Cruz in the summer to chance his arm on the mainland. He was a permanent fixture on the bench for Tenerife, so the lure of first team football was hard for him to turn down. “It was tough to leave the club that gave me the chance to be a professional foot-

baller,” he said. “But I will be an Elche man this weekend. If I play, I will play my usual game and do my best for my team.” The irony will not be lost on Angel. If he were still with Tenerife, he would have played in most of the matches this season and, with Nino injured, he would probably have started this match. When asked if he would celebrate scoring a goal, Angel smiled and said: “No! I will celebrate inside, but as respect for the fans I will not.” Angel also revealed that he had spoken with a few of the Tenerife players this week. “They are my friends and we have had a few chats,” he said. “I spoke with Nino, who is a former Elche player, so he knows how this will feel. I told him I hope he doesn’t play as he is a great, great footballer!” Angel may get his wish. Nino is still struggling to shake off the thigh injury that made him miss the Cordoba match last week. “It's getting better but not quickly” he said. “Of course I want to play, and I really want to play against Elche. It would be really special to me, but of more importance is a win.” There was quite a queue at the medical facility this week as several Tenerife players look to get fit. As well as Nino, another former Elche player, Aragoneses, should shake off an elbow problem, Juanlu hopes to be back from the flu and Pablo Sicilia may make the bench after recovering from ankle ligament damage.

Chipper Woodys enjoy new upset THERE was a major upset in Division Two of the Oasis Fm Pool League last Tuesday when Woodys shocked leaders Legends B. The Valle San Lorenzo lads started the night one off the bottom and faced the in-form runaway leaders. But they showed that nothing should be taken for granted in this league as they made a fast start. Fester and Tony put them 2-1 up, and the match swayed back and forth all evening. It went down to the last match, and captain Colin sunk the last black to give them another scalp. A few weeks back, Woodys held Gaffers, who have now charged into second place after a fine win over Lupain. Gaffers have now won their last four matches. Bar 180 C edged past Connors to go third, while Bar Tasca are right in the promotion mix following a 7-3 win over Target Rangers. Tenerife Hammers C beat their B team 8-2 in a mini upset. The B team had been on a good run recently but the C team, inspired by a Tony Macarone and Bobby Baker double, took the spoils. Nauta B, Barracuda Bandits and Toscales

Tangos also claimed three points. There were no upsets in Division One as the top five sides all won. Palms A were given a decent test by Toscales Old Boys before sneaking home 6-4, while Phoenix Knights were made to work for their win over Dreamers, by the same scoreline. Summerlands Superstars nicked a few extra frames over Palms with a rock-solid 9-1er at Nauta A, but Tenerife Hammers A needed a last-frame Jambo win to see off Rat Pack. At the bottom, Legends A got an excellent point off Bar 180 A. That will give them confidence ahead of their Los Cristianos derby date at Dreamers this week. The first singles standings of the season for Division One are out, and last year’s singles champion heads the way. Jambo has made another impressive start to the season and he leads, having lost just the one match. The Division Two standings will be in next week’s Canarian Weekly, and for full listings and all the latest tables and news on the Oasis Fm Pool League, go to www.oasisfm.com

A clean-sweep week! THERE were whitewashes plenty in both divisions of the Oasis Fm Darts League last Friday, and no fewer than six matches ended with an 8-0 result. At the top of Division 1, Nauta A won every leg in their destruction of the X-Men, London kicking things off with a 180 and young Tom taking out 82 with an extravagant bull, double-16 finish. Toscales Allsorts lost only two legs during a complete battering of Strikers, and Phoenix Bar also left Target B with nothing to shout about, A Bubbles 129 fin-

ish (25, treble-18, bull) being the highlight of the night. Heroes Bar, entertaining the Silver Surfers, took the first two legs and were looking good for a win. Sadly, the wheels came off and they slumped to a 5-3 loss. A relegation battle at Sundowners saw the home team achieve a 5-3 victory over the Flukers, and the Exiles dished out a 7-1 home defeat to Woodys A. Rood A cemented their midtable spot with a 6-2 win at Ensecan, and reigning champions Bar 180 A enjoyed an excel-

Bar 180 B raced into a 4-0 lead over Tenerife Sun, but were then pegged back and just scraped through 5-3, while Yelas bar still have promotion hopes after JJ hit a 180 during a 7-1 win over the Playgirls. Knights B move up a place to 10th with a fine 7-1 win over the Hunters, and the Tavern also went up one place to fifth with a comfortable 6-2 success against Woodys B. lent 7-1 triumph at Tenerife Sons. In Division 2, the Nutters lost just two legs in their home venue derby whitewash of the Naughty Nautas. But ahead of the Nutters in the league, Barracudarts Boys responded to that with their own shut-out against the Phoenix Flames. Gaffers bar, looking good for promotion, also claimed all the points at Amigos Bad Girls, and had Paul checking out on 118. Gaffers player Ben received maximum respect for his sportsmanship from the Los Abrigos team.

MUCH has been written about the ill-fated Royal Mail steamer Titanic over the years, but it is little known that “Tenerife Radio” was the Godmother station to the ship. In the early days of wireless telegraphy, it was customary that the land station which responded to a ship’s first message was granted “Godmother” status to the vessel. The Titanic was fitted with state-of-the-art Marconi wireless equipment of a rotary spark design, which was driven by a 5kw alternator; the most powerful afloat in the world. Its great range was made possible by the span between the two masts. The aerial, a four-wire vertical T antenna, was designed by Marconi himself and was suspended between the ship’s masts, some 250ft above sea level. Titanic’s sea trials began on Belfast Lough on 2nd April 1912, which was also the day the telegraph equipment was delivered to the ship. Marconi’s John Philips and Harold Bride, began installing and adjusting the equipment, and the following day saw the final adjustments. The apparatus was functioning correctly, and from that moment it was in constant use, exchanging messages with coast stations (Malin Head and Seaforth) and transmitting sea-trial reports to Bruce Ismay, managing director of White Star Line, in Liverpool. That evening, Philips and Bride tested the equipment at full power. The transmission was the ship’s general call: VVV CQ DE MGY, (DE being “this is” and MGY being the ship’s identification code). Tenerife Radio, which had received the transmission at the Marconi coast station at Santa Cruz, was the first station to respond. The distance of this transmission was some 2,000 miles (3,700 km). Later, the message was responded to by Egypt’s Port Said coastal station, which was over 3,000 miles (5,500km) away. Construction work on Tenerife Radio had begun on 14th May 1909, and by 12th October, the last of the four great towers had been erected. These towers were 75 metres high and could be seen

Page 48

Tenerife and the Titanic...

from miles around. They gave rise to the name Barrio Cuatro Torres (Neighbourhood of Four Towers), which persists to this day, although the aerial masts are long gone. The station underwent fitting out throughout 1910 and began permanent service on 2nd June 1911. In the Thirties, the radio station was relocated from its coastal site to Geneto, on the outskirts of La Laguna and not far from the northern airport. The area became known as “Finca del Telegrafo” and occupied an area of over

50,000sqm. The “Antenna Field” had 12 wooden masts between 8-12m high. And although it has now fallen into disuse, the original radio shack can still be seen, and the area is still referred to as Villa del Telegrafo. The Marconi men on board the Titanic were not employees of the White Star Line but were leased from The Marconi International Marine Telegraph Company. The operators or “Sparks” (so called because of the spark of the Morse telegraph apparatus) had to be aged between

21 and 25 and had to pass the Civil Service exam, in addition to being able to send and receive 25 words per minute in Morse code. After attending the Marconi Telegraphers Training School in Liverpool, Bride could tap out 26wpm and by 1912, after six years with the company, Phillips could transmit and receive 39wpm. Their wages reflected their skill and, although seemingly low, were very decent by the standards of the day: Bride was on eight dollars a month and Phillips, as senior man, on 16.

Apart from receiving ice warnings and sending company “traffic”, their main work on board involved sending telegrams for the first-class passengers, at 12s 6d (62.5p) for the first ten words and thereafter 9d (4p) per word. In the 36 hours since leaving Southampton on Titanic, they sent over 250 private telegrams before they sent their first CQD message at 12.15 on the night of 14th April. CQD was the forerunner to SOS, the “CQ” coming from the French “Securete” or pay attention, to which Marconi added a “D” for distress. Their distress message was picked up by 25 ships in the area, as well as the coastal station at Cape Race, Newfoundland. All vessels altered course and, at full speed, raced to the given coordinates of 41.44N. 50.24W. These two valiant operators remained at their post and continued transmitting, in an attempt to raise closer vessels and update the rescue fleet, until being commended and released by Captain Smith, at

2.17am. The official time of the foundering was given, by Captain Arthur Rostron of RMS Carpathia, to the Olympic (Titanic’s sister ship), as 2.20am. The Carpathia arrived at the scene around 4am after steaming through dangerous ice fields at 17knots. By 9am, she had picked up 20 lifeboats, with a total of 705 survivors from the original complement of 2,227 passengers and crew. Harold Bride survived the tragedy and made it into collapsible lifeboat B, after having been washed into the sea while attempting to launch it. John (Jack) Phillips was not so fortunate. He was found and pulled from the sea into the same boat, only to from exposure shortly before the rescue ship arrived. Despite being a hero, Bride kept a low profile after the sinking. He went on to serve as wireless operator on the steamship Mona’s Isle during the First World War. In 1922, he married Miss Lucy Downie and moved to Glasgow, where he became a salesman. But he died in obscurity in 1956 aged 66.
