Get your skates on! Santa Cruz lays on an ice rink for Christmas HOW’S this for an incredible treat? An outdoor ice rink is to be installed in the centre of Santa Cruz all over Christmas. The lake, in the centre of the Plaza de España, will be transformed into a giant, 600sq.m rink, and will open every day to the public from 10am through until midnight, starting on 3rd December until 10th January. Just fancy, while the Brits shiver around their ice rinks in mid-winter, you can skate to your hearts content in the sunshine of Tenerife’s capital city. It is hoped that the attraction will bring thousands of people into the capital from all over the Island, hopefully to enjoy this extraordinary facility, and to help boost the capital’s commercial centre during the most essential trading period of the year. If nothing else, it will certainly introduce a real Christmassy atmosphere normally associated with northern Europe to the city. The rink, the first ever to be installed in Santa Cruz and probably the first any-
where on the Island - will cater for 80 people at a time, and there will be a
spectator area, set away from the ice. Hopefully, ice skates will be
available to hire because, as it has been pointed out, not too many people in sunny Tenerife will have a pair tucked away in a cupboard! The initiative, by the Santa Cruz Development Corporation, was announced yesterday (Thursday) at a Press conference in Santa Cruz. It was attended by the city’s mayor, Miguel Zerolo, and other dignitaries, and, along with the ice-rink venture, other plans for the festive season to boost trade and tourism and
leisure were also discussed. These plans include the introduction of a tourist bus service for the first time, touring the streets of the capital. Another great city really geared up for iceskating this Christmas is London, where there are several, glamorous venues available, including the Tower of London, Somerset House, Canary Wharf, Alexander Palace, Hampton Court (on the outskirts of London), and the O2 Arena, where there’s also a Christmas Fair. And for the first time,
The home of good shopping Come & See our *NEW LOOK* Store, in Los Cristianos - now Bigger & better! Opp. Paloma Beach Apts, CC Costamar, Los Cristianos and Las Chafiras
there is even one at the London Eye, which is already one of the great tourist attractions in the capital, and has been for many years. Curiously, Mexico City has boasted of having the world’s largest ice rink, with pop stars and professional ice skaters taking part in a spectacular opening show for the 27,870sq.m addition to the Zocalo Square. And while it is not nearly as hot there as it is here at Christmas, Mexicans still enjoy temperatures of 70plus degrees.

Tenerife’s now the capital city of dance music
15% decrease in grapes harvest THE GRAPES harvested in 2010 in Tenerife have fallen by 15 percent over last year’s harvest, reflecting a “very difficult” scenario for the quality wines of the island due to weather conditions and the market, given the wide range of brands from different backgrounds. This is part of the data collected by the Cabildo of Tenerife and presented at a press conference by the Island Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Jose Joaquin Bethencourt, during the presentation of the fifth edition of the “Big Party Wines” of the island, held Friday in the capital of Tenerife. José Joaquin Bethencourt said “this has not been a good year” for the harvest among other reasons, because the weather has been “particularly bad” for agriculture, particularly wine. The grape harvest controlled by the regulator of designations of origin for the island this year reached 3,106,155 pounds, against 3,657,205 kilos last year. Of the total harvested, 36 percent is white grape and 64 per cent, dark. The year which saw the largest harvest was in 2006; this year only 42 percent of the potential production of
MINISTRY of Sound, the biggest dance music brand of the world, has arrived to Tenerife to transform the island for two days. Ministry of Sound World Tour Tenerife will take place on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th, in the south of the island, in Arona. the island, has been collected according to the Cabildo. The councillor explained that during the last five years there have been adverse weather conditions of rain, heat and wind, and with respect to the market, opening up new segments is still not enough to offset declining sales recorded by the Tenerife wine in the last year. However, the Minister was optimistic because “dedication” in the selection of grapes will make quality wines have a “good year”, while in terms of sales, “everything seems to be higher than the year past.“ To consolidate and promote this strategy the City Council has designed an airtight container for transporting mulch and wines of the island by plane, which initially will be free until a private company is interested in marketing it. Festival of Wine With regard to the feast of wines, the manager of the Foundation Tenerife Rural, George Michael, relied on repeat attendance record last year, with over 1,600 attendees, and explained that there will be specific tents of the wine “story” and the Casa del Vino, in addition to those in restaurants in Noria Street, Santa Cruz José Alfonso, said that November 25 will result in the “Uncorked harvest” this year, which begins with a lecture by Professor of Chemistry at the University of La Laguna Sebastian Delgado on “wine and the senses.“
Cloning scam The National Police have broken up in Santa Cruz de Tenerife a plot devoted to a clone credit card scam . The so-called Miami operation has resulted in the arrest of an individual MFP, 24, on suspicion of involvement in the cloning of over 120 credit cards. The police operation, called Miami, was developed during the months of September and October this year it resolved more than 30 complaints of fraudulent use of credit cards. The common denominator was that fraudulent purchases were made abroad, which led to researchers to conduct their investigations at a ‘point’, it turned out to be an important trade center in the capital of Tenerife. Once they located the
“point of compromise ‘, the research focused on locating the alleged employee who used the peak times for customers to operate a copier hidden in the pocket of their uniform. The employee had worked for over a year at the centre and had been carrying out the cloning of these bank cards during April, May and June, then deliver the device to another member of the organization that allegedly manipulated the information obtained to create cloned cards. The financial damage caused was over 40,000 euros, although there were more than 120,000 euros in operations that have been cancelled due to the rapid action of the police acting in close collaboration with banks.

A WORD FROM OUR EDITOR
Tourism is on Know your onions the rise again
Email: editor@canarianweekly.com
AS YOU CAN imagine each day i receive hundreds of emails, some of them spam, jokes, chain mails, you know the type. For half of them I just strike the delete button and never give another thought to the contents. Some I’m just a tad inquisitive about, and usually spend a nano second reading the heading and then strike delete. But this particular email I read to the end and then all week all I’ve been doing is telling everyone else, and, it seems it is true. Basically onions have mega healing properties. An onion a day keeps the doctor away. In 1919 flu killed 40 million people, there was a Doctor who visited many farmers to see if he could help them combat the flu. Many of the farmers and their family had contracted it, and many died. The doctor came upon one farmer, and to his surprise, everyone in the household was very healthy. When the doctor asked what the farmer was doing that was different, the wife replied that she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish in the rooms of the home (probably only two rooms back then). The doctor couldn’t believe it and asked if he could have one of the onions and place it under the microscope. She gave him one, and when he did this, he did find the flu virus in the onion. It obviously absorbed the bacteria, therefore, keeping the family healthy.
Page 04
The health benefits of onions are frequently overlooked or even unknown. They contain powerful compounds such as Quercetin and Chromium, studies reveal that this kitchen staple has many hidden talents making it the diamond of the vegetable world. Quercetin, is recognised as being a more potent antioxidant than vitamin E, is a multi-tasking flavonoid which helps to keep the body in peak condition, aiding to fight a variety of illnesses ranging from the common cold to colon, prostate and breast cancer. Onions also contain very high levels of chromium which helps maintain a positive hormone balance and to combat PMS. Experts believe that as little as two to three onions per week can have a significantly positive impact on health. And even better news, onions don’t have to be eaten raw to maximise their health benefits - Quercetin is relatively stable while being cooked so retains all its powerful goodness to aid overall wellbeing. But beware onions are a huge magnet for bacteria, especially uncooked onions. Therefore you need to use them then discard any remaining raw onion or food with uncooked onion in. Never use and onion that’s been in the fridge for a day or two as it has soaked up all the bacteria. The moral of the story is, buy some onions and place them in bowls around your home. If you work at a desk, place one or two in your office or under your desk or even on top somewhere. Try it and see what happens and let me know how you get on.

Thank you
Dear Editor, May I, through the medium of your newspaper, say a heartfelt thank-you to all the people who stopped and offered assistance to my wife, when she took ill while attending Sunday’s Remembrance Day Service at Westhaven Bay. There were so many that I am afraid I can’t remember them all. I would like to say a special thanks to Maggie and John, who stayed with us until the ambulance came, and then took us to their home until Margaret had recovered enough to be driven home. Not only that but they rang the next day to offer further assistance. To you all, we would like to pass on our sincere thanks. Margaret and Bill Manning

ic situation, and that of the 75,000 British residents spread around the seven islands. He felt the British residents need to integrate better and said he would help campaign to get residents to sign the local Padrón lists. That would help elderly residents with health or financial problems.

THE PRESIDENT announced a plan of action to combat unemployment and change the production model. This plan includes specific commitments for the next fifteen months and will be approved at the next Council of Ministers. The president has announced further that in the first quarter of 2011 the pension reform will be sent to Congress. The Prime Minister, appeared before the full Congress to report on the employment situation and policies, stressed that the commitment to austerity, fiscal consolidation, reform and social cohesion will remain the pillars of Government action in the new era that began with the remodeling. Among these reforms are those affecting pensions and the labour market. Regarding pension reform, the chief executive has announced that the government will send to the House a bill before the end of the first quarter of 2011. He stressed that “this is a compromise without going back,” because “the rights of younger generations to have
confidence in their future pensions, the demands of fiscal consolidation, external credibility of the economy and the Spanish institutions” so demand, he said. Labour market reform The Prime Minister said that just five months after its entry, “it is too early” to assess their effects on employment. However, listed some findings emerging as an average growth of 44% year contract to promote permanent contracts, an increase of 28% in the last two months of probationary contracts, and increase training that after falling at a rate of 13% before the reform, now growing at 6%. The government will also undertake the reform of employment policies to increase the chances of employability of the unemployed, especially young and
long-term unemployed, focusing on training and personalized attention. In spring, in accordance with the provisions contained in the labour reform law, the Executive will address the creation of the “Austrian Fund” which is, as noted, an element of improving the rights of workers to supplement compensation, provide more resources for training, and provide greater flexibility for companies facing objective difficulties. Action Plan The work programme, announced by the Prime Minister to combat unemployment and change the production model, is collected, Rodriguez Zapatero said in an “action plan” to be adopted next Friday at the Council of Ministers. This plan should a “schedule of
specific commitments by the end of the legislature.” Before the end of the year, we will proceed to the extinction of 14 public enterprises and the merger of another 24, so the 106 companies become 77. With this plan to streamline the state enterprise sector will be reduced a total of 450 seats on the board of directors and 80 positions, the president said. Also, before the end of the year, approve the Comprehensive Plan for Industrial Policy in order to accelerate convergence with the EU average in this sector and a 15% increase in industrial production for export. The project also includes specific policies for strategic industries such as referring to the automotive, agrifood, aerospace, information technology and communications, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, and renewable energy. By the end of the year, will launch a package of elimination and simplification of administrative burden will save approximately 2,000 million euros for the business. Bracelets fine It’s 101 years since the is such a pain last volcanic eruption
EVEN Leire Pajín, the new Minister for Health, wears one, but the company making the “health” bracelets has been fined 15,000 euros for misleading advertising. The adverts, put out by Power Balance, claimed that
the bracelet improved “balance, strength and flexibility”. The Junta de Andalucía (autonomous government) imposed the fine, yet FACUA, the consumers’ organisation, describes the amount as “ridiculous”. It points out that the bracelets are still being sold more than 300,000 so far in Spain - and intends to appeal against the fine.
Train strike halted in the nick of time A TWO-DAY strike by the national train drivers’ union, SEMAF, was halted in the early hours of yesterday (Thursday). Union officials, set to call the drivers out hours later, finally came to an agreement with RENFE bosses after nearly ten hours of negotiations. One of the main points in the union’s favour was the creation of an annual calen-

dar, denoting the shifts for drivers. The 48-hour strike, mooted for yesterday and today, was called because of differences between management and union over the application of new professional categories.
ON NOVEMBER 18th last week it was 101 years since the beginning of the last volcanic eruption on Tenerife. The eruption developed between the 18th and 28th November 1909 affecting the area of Chinyero. This eruption was a substantial change in the way we see and understand this phenomena in the Canary Islands, in the manner in which the volcanic crisis was handled by civilian and military authorities, and even in the resources used to significantly reduce risks associated with the eruption. Interestingly pigeons had an undeniable role in the eruption, they were used as messaging tools and were present in both the onset of the ash and in its development. In view of the tremendous depth that this event
marked on the locals, the city of Santiago del Teide last year promoted the creation and implementation of the “Centennial Commission” composed of representatives of the corporation and extensible representatives
of other corporations neighbors of cultural groups in the region, as the collective “Arguayo” teachers of schools in the municipality and members of the scientific community related to scientific research institu-

Pregnant women carried cocaine through airports
DRUG SMUGGLERS, who employed pregnant women carrying cocaine to evade airport X-ray screenings, have been busted by Spanish police. They have arrested 15 people, including eight Colombians, in an operation which began in July. The couriers transport the cocaine either hidden inside their vaginas or stomachs, wrapped up in condoms or
plastic bags on flights from Madrid toairports in the Canary Islands, said police. Three Dominicans, two Spaniards, a German and a Paraguayan were arrested, as well as the Colombians. And six women were among those arrested, including four suspected drug couriers. Time to turn the corner...
THIS WEEK, Canarian Weekly caught up with our regular hairdresser columnist Carl, who is preparing to celebrate the fourth birthday of his popular salon, Robot. Carl told us: “This has been a strange year for me, having being surrounded by a lot of negativity over the economic climate. I’d developed an almost laissez-faire attitude but then, suddenly, after a conversation with a friend, I turned a corner. ‘Talking with him made me realise that what Robot was
doing was actually very good. I needed to see it through another person’s eyes to believe it. “My shop really needed a kick up the bottom, giving customers what they really wanted - something really difficult to find elsewhere.” Carl also realised that he missed the camaraderie of working with a group of people, so he decided to build a new team around him, bringing in stylist Lindsey and nail consultant Adrienne. Scottish-born Lindsey, a fully-qualified stylist, has been on the Island for nearly five years, while Adrienne was brought in to fill a big gap in the services provided
by the Robot salon. Carl admitted: “I was sick of sending people elsewhere so I thought, ‘Why not do it here in the salon’?” Adrienne, a Hungarian who is already proving a worthy addition, uses only Creative products to enhance your nails and make them look beautiful. And according to Carl, despite a general tightening of belts in these dark, financial times, people are still getting their hair done. “If it’s a choice between paying a bill and getting their hair done, then the hair wins every time,” he says with a grin. The current trend is dressing-up, glamour and making
the effort, which has not been the case for about ten years. Of the latest trends, Carl observes: “The style now is definitely glamour. “It’s big hair, bounce and curls. Straighteners are still used, but not as much, while the wash-and-go effect really has got up and gone!” So if you want to be glamorous for Christmas, then book now as there’s only five weeks to go. Plan ahead and don’t leave it until the last minute - as is typical of Tenerife style. Robot is situated just up from the harbour in Los Cristianos, and is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am-6pm (7pm on Friday).

Last-ditch attempt to stub out this total smoking ban SMOKING areas should be created in bars and restaurants, according to the Popular Party, which lodged last-minute amendment to the new smoking ban legislation on Monday. It was the last possible day for amendments, and one the Popular Group had presented in Congress, to no avail because it received no support. The Senate is now its last chance of success. The new Spanish legislation to ban smoking in all closed public reaches the final leg in the Senate, yet the Partido Popular again defended the idea that smokers’ areas be established in bars and restaurants. The matter will be debated in the Senate Health Commission ahead of the full debate on 16th December 16. If it ratifies the decision already approved in Congress, the ban, will be effected on 2nd January. Yet the Popular Party has

received support from more than 100 Spanish hostelry business owners, who demonstrated on Monday outside the Economy Institute in Madrid in protest the new law. They presented a letter for Miguel Sebastián, Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism. It noted that when the law comes in, they expect a further 10% drop in income after “30 consecutive months of falls because of the recession”. The protesters are asking that 30% of the space in bars and restaurants be prepared for smokers “as happens in 24 of the 27 countries in the European Union”.

Peter adds: “Orbs (ghostly lights that appear at night) were also caught on camera in front of one of the famous mansion houses in
the old part of the town.” Is nothing sacred? Angie and Keith, who are Tenerife residents, were interviewed on Oasis Fm recently, in the same building as Canarian Weekly, and yes, after a small investigation, they were convinced the place is haunted! Unfortunately, the new society has had little reaction from other Canarian Weekly readers regarding ghosts, spooks or paranormal events. “We are very interested to learn of any stories, especial-

It is the definitive sportscar to come from the renowned car-maker, capable of 200plus mph, and likened by José

Diabetes rife in Spaniards EXPERTS have estimated that around one-quarter of Spain’s population are at risk of contracting diabetes, and more than 10% already have it. The Spanish Diabetes Society (SED), says about five million people already have some diabetes strain, which is incurable and can be controlled only by diet and other measures. There is a direct link between obesity and high blood pressure, and diabetes,
says the SED, although poor nutrition and other causes can also contribute to the condition. In addition, the majority of those suffering with Type 2 diabetes, which does not need self-injections of insulin, are clinically obese when diagnosed. Yet few of these people realise they could have avoided the condition had they been at a healthy weight at the time. Even more worryingly, some 300,000 schoolchildren are diabetic, and about 10% aged between 6-16 hide it from
their teachers. This can be dangerous if a child’s blood sugar level drops, and staff do not realise. An untreated hypoglycaemic attack, known as a “hypo”, can lead to the sufferer ending up in a coma, or even worse! Spain’s Diabetes Foundation is launching a campaign to prevent discrimination in the playground against diabetic kids, so they will be more likely to make their condition known for safety’s sake. Nearly half of Spain’s diabetics suffer from some optical problem or another, from
short-sightedness to total blindness, and diabetes is the most frequent cause of blindness in the 20-65 age group. Experts say that over 40%
of complications associated with diabetes can be avoided by managing the condition carefully. These preventable complications include heart
conditions, kidney failure, blindness, and amputation of limbs. And among the essential care necessary for diabetics is a regular leukaemia test.
Benidorm, capital gambling city of Spain? SOMEHOW, you just can’t imagine Elvis Presley belting out Viva Las Benidorm. Yet the Spanish resort wants to remodel itself on Las Vegas, complete with gambling dens. If the plan by Hosbec, Benidorm’s hotel association, is accepted, the coastal city sees itself as the Las Vegas of
Spain, with 4 and 5-star hotels hosting mini-casinos inside. Benidorm, on the Costa Brava, attracts around six million tourists a year, including one million from the UK, and is among Spain’s leading holiday hot-spots. The hilarious, award-winning BBC comedy Benidorm does not seem to have boosted tourism numbers, despite running to a fourth series soon. Yet prospects are looking good for the hoteliers, because Benidorm’s Town Hall

is supporting what appears to be a far-fetched venture. Hosbec hopes the initiative will attract wealthier tourists, to check the increasing decline in visitor numbers and tourist spending. Holiday-makers there spend an averaage 63 euros a day, against the national average of 96 euros, and Hosbec chief Toni Mayor, said: “It is important to do it as quickly as possible, as our future depends on attracting this type of tourist.”

Emergency phones are turned off
EMERGENCY roadside phones in Spain are to be scrapped over the next three years because they have been rendered obsolete by mobiles. That’s the reasoning behind the DGT traffic authority’s cost-cutting exercise, although they will remain in
tunnels and areas where there is poor reception for mobile phones. Also, the DGT says the use of the 5,400 emergency phones has fallen by 80% in the last ten years, so that means adios to most of them. They were initially installed in the Eighties, and DGT boss Pere Navarro, said: “They have provided an immense service to the citizens.”
The plight of Spain’s poverty-stricken kids THERE are two million children at risk of poverty in Spain - one of the highest levels in the European Union - according to Unicef. Latest figures from the United Nations children’s fund reveal that only Romania, Bulgaria, Latvia and Italy exceed these levels. Its new report says that 25% of children below the age of 18 are at risk of relative poverty, which means they live in homes where the income is less than 60% of the national average. Marta Arias, who led the
study, said: “Being a poor child in Spain does not mean going hungry, but it does mean that there is more chance of malnutrition. “It does not mean there is no access to education, but there will be difficulties in paying for costs, or having to give up schooling.” She also said it wouldn’t prevent them from seeing a doctor, but could cause problems for the parents paying for some of the treatment. The report, Childhood in Spain 2010-2011, says public spending on the family and children there is among the lowest of the world’s richest countries.
Hitched up to a points loss on driver’s licence MARRIED motorists and single men are the ones most likely to lose points on their driving licences in Spain. Those who are hitched generally get nabbed by the police for using their mobile phones while driving along, and single men - or those without a stable partner usually fail breath-tests. These are the findings of a survey conducted by the
Page 10
Traffic and Highway Code University Institute (INTRAS), together with the National Driving Schools Confederation (CNAE). Nearly all of those forfeiting points are men, although 42% of the total number of drivers are women. This year, around 60,000 people will have attended the re-education classes to get points back - mostly male, aged from 26-40. Only 13% of those attending the reeducation classes are professional drivers.
Spanish police nab UK drugdealer suspect STEPHEN PITMAN, a Kent man on the run since 2006, has been arrested by Spanish police on the Costa del Sol, after some confusion over his name. The 59-year-old, from Chislehurst, has been wanted in the UK for more than four years on seven charges of drug trafficking, for which could be jailed for 14 years if found guilty. It was another triumph for Crimestoppers, who included him on their “Operación Captura” list, proving again the continuing success of the brilliant collaboration between Spanish and British police forces. Diario Sur reports that he was arrested in the “Cardhu
Operation”, which took place in a Mijas bar on 25th October, but gave a false name. Now, fingerprints have confirmed him as being Pitman. The Cardhu Operation involved combing known criminal meeting points in Marbella, Mijas, Fuengirola,
Torremolinos and Benalmádena for five days, which led to the same number of arrests. On 4th November, 32-yearold Lee Tansey, from Salford, wanted for armed robberies in the UK, was arrested at Málaga Airport in a joint operation involving UK SOCA
(Serious Organised Crime Agency) and Spain’s specialist UDYCO (Anti-Drugs and Organised Crime) unit. Last week in Benalmádena, the UDYCO police arrested a French fugitive wanted for murder, and earlier this summer they caught 39-year old Briton David William Baxendale. He had been spotted by a member of the public in Fuengirola, who identified a tattoo he had remembered seeing in the Crimestoppers programme. In May this year, British sex offender Glen Tranter was also captured on the Costa del Sol, while at the end of last year, Julián Tzolov, wanted by the FBI, was arrested with his partner in Marbella on a charge of defrauding some $400 million from investors in the United States.
Annual inflation rise is a mighty government blow THERE was more gloom for the Spanish Government at the weekend, with the annual inflation figures to October showing an increase of 2.3%. It brings into sharp focus the feeble economic recovery, which promised some hope in the first six months of the year. It also leaves inflation higher than in November 2008, when prices rose 2.4% and tipped the country into recession. Dearer prices for electricity, fish and poultry caused the rise, according to the National Statistics Institute, which had to revise up a previous estimate. Spain has already been struggling with weak economic growth, squeezed by Government cut-backs. These were produced to rein in a huge public deficit and also to check market
fears of a Greek-style debt crisis. Also suspended were dozens of road and rail projects, and cuts to the wages of civil servants. Expansion in the GDP (gross domestic product), the total economic output, halted after advancing a tiny 0.2% in the second quarter and 0.1%
in the first, which enabled Spain to emerge from one of the deepest recessions in decades. The Government aims to bring the public deficit down to 6% of GDP in 2011, and to the eurozone limit of 3% in 2013. The deficit hit 11.1% of GDP last year, the eurozone’s
third highest after Greece and Ireland. Disregarding volatile energy and food prices, the latest data shows an underlying inflation rate of 1.1% over the year, while on a monthly basis, prices were up 0.9% last month after creeping up 0.1% in September.

Prince William: ‘Kate will make her own destiny’ PRINCE WILLIAM has said his fiancee Kate Middleton is under no pressure to follow in his mother’s footsteps and will “make her own destiny”. The couple have given their first television interview since announcing they will marry next year. Referring to his mother, William said: “There’s no pressure, like Kate said it is about carving your own future. “No one is trying to fill my mother’s shoes, what she did was fantastic. “It’s about making your own future and your own destiny and Kate will do a very good job of that.” Miss Middleton said she wished she had met Diana, Princess of Wales, and thought she was “inspirational”. Speaking of the proposal, she said she “really didn’t expect it at all” and was “in total shock”.
Prince William admitted he had been planning the engagement “for a while but as any guy out there will know it takes a certain amount of motivation to get yourself going”. Speaking to his fiancee, William said: “We’ve talked about today for a while haven’t we... so Kate wasn’t in the dark over it all, we’ve been planning it, you know, for at least a year if not longer. It was just the right time.” He added: “Obviously we want a family so we’ll have to start thinking about that”. Earlier he revealed he proposed using his mother’s engagement ring to make sure she “didn’t miss out on the excitement”. William had hid the priceless heirloom in a rucksack and took it on a romantic break with his girlfriend to Kenya last month when he proposed. Miss Middleton had showed off the distinctive blue sapphire engagement ring along-

side her husband-to-be. She told reporters joining the Royal Family was a “daunting prospect”. But she added: “Hopefully I’ll take it in my stride.” Asked about the proposal, Miss Middleton said: “It was very romantic, and it was very personal.”
William would not say if he got down on one knee to propose, adding: “That’s going to stay a secret.” The Royal wedding will take place in London in the spring or summer of 2011, Clarence House said. Further details about the date and venue will be
announced in due course. The couple will live in north Wales after the wedding and William will continue to serve with the RAF. The couple briefly split up in April 2007, reportedly because of the strain caused by William’s military career. When asked about their break-up William said: “We were both very young, it was at university, we were both finding ourselves as such and being different characters and stuff. “It was very much trying to find our own way and we were growing up, it was a bit of space and bit of things like that and it worked out for the better.” Miss Middleton added: “At the time I wasn’t very happy about it, but actually it made me a stronger person, you find out things about yourself that maybe you hadn’t realised. “I think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you are younger and I really valued that time for me
although I didn’t think it at the time.” A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: “Both the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are absolutely delighted for them both.” The Prince of Wales said he was “thrilled, obviously, thank you. They have been practising long enough”. He added: “It makes me feel very old.” Prince Harry added: “I am delighted that my brother has popped the question! “It means I get a sister, which I have always wanted.” Miss Middleton’s parents, Michael and Carole Middleton, said they are “absolutely delighted” and “thrilled” at the news. They added they think Prince William is “wonderful and are extremely fond of him”. The Prime Minister David Cameron has sent his congratulations to the couple. Speaking outside Number 10 earlier, he said the engagement was “a great day for our country”.

Taller Aleman Heiko THIS WEEK Canarian Weekly had the pleasure of meeting German car mechanic Heiko, the owner of Taller Aleman Heiko based in Guargacho. It’s funny I had this pre-conceived idea of what the garage would look like and as usual was totally wrong, bear in mind it is a garage it was absolutely immaculate and spotless. Not an oil stain in sight. Surprising because the garage has been very busy since opening 15 months ago; but not surprising as Heiko takes great pride in both his work and garage. ‘He said, I like my working environment to be as clean as possible, first impressions count, I try and satisfy my customers fr5om the first moment of meeting to the job, to the bill’ Multilingual Heiko is originally from Berlin and learnt his craft with Citroen in Germany. After working for Renault Tenerife for a period of seven
years and then being chief mechanic at BMW here in Las Chafiras Heiko thought it was time to go it alone. He told Canarian Weekly, ‘I wanted to do my own thing, being Chief mechanic was good, but you’re the middleman between the mechanics and the management.’ Heiko can do every job on your car except bodywork. He uses only top quality parts and does not entertain inferior ones, therefore he can fully guarantee the work that he carries out. He is fully legal here in Tenerife and a member of FEMETE, so he can stamp car warranty books and carry out ITV work. Canarian Weekly asked Heiko what are common problems for cars here n Tenerife, he said, ‘usually it’s things like timing belt, brakes and oil changes. It’s a must to have your car serviced to avoid more expensive damage later on.’ If you have a new car due to the law change in 2002 Heiko can carry that out for you and stamp the car’s doc-

Dave Thomas, British Consul General and Director for Consular Services Iberia, said: “It’s important that Britons living in Spain help themselves and their friends by finding out what they are entitled to. Too many people simply don’t know their rights in terms of benefits, pensions and healthcare. The more that British citizens are aware of what is and isn’t available to them, the more they can plan their future and avoid needless worry.” The open days give residents the opportunity to ask general questions to the

you only use for the winter whilst you’re in Tenerife it’s worth giving it a once over. Also if you hear a noise it’s the car’s way of saying something needs looking at’ Heiko was keen to point out

Government plans two-speed Internet A TWO-SPEED internet system where websites can pay to be prioritised over rivals could be introduced after the Government signalled its backing for the plan. Any move to bring in the new rule - which would see the creation of fast lanes and slow lanes for online traffic would go against the fundamental net neutrality principle of cyberspace. Under the existing system, internet service providers (ISPs) such as Sky, BT or Virgin can give a simple blog the same level of access as a web-
site for a major company or organisation. But communications minister Ed Vaizey has indicated the Government could clear the way for providers to charge money for a better and quicker service. He said: “Lightly regulated internet is good for business, good for the economy, and good for people.” While critics suggest the move would mean an end to long-standing online democracy, those who back the scheme say it is crucial to providers’ efforts to manage increasing internet traffic. BBC bosses have indicated they would begin alerting broadband users if their ISPs degrade the quality of iPlayers.

Ireland ‘likely to take a substantial EU loan’ IRELAND is likely to end up taking a “very substantial loan” running into “tens of billions of euros” from the European Union, according to the head of the Irish central bank. “The intention is and the expectation is, on their part and personally on my part, that negotiations or discussions will be effective and a loan will be made available and drawn down as necessary,” said Governor Patrick Honohan. “We’re talking about a very substantial loan for sure ... tens of billions yes, I don’t know that any precision has been put on it at this stage yet,” he added. Mr Honohan’s comments come as representatives from the EU and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) meet in Dublin. We have taken the hard medicine and we’re prepared to take more. Dick Roche, Ireland’s minis-
ter for European affairs The EU-IMF mission aims to identify the size of the hole in state and bank finances and the measures needed to reassure markets that Ireland will not default on debts. Speaking in Frankfurt, Mr Honohan said he expected the EU-IMF loan, if approved by the Irish government, would provide a financial
buffer for Irish banks that would not be used. He added that he did not think the experts would demand any radical alteration of the Government’s savings plans once they inspect Exchequer and bank books. It has been estimated that Ireland’s banks need over £42bn to survive but the
losses are compounded every month by worsening bankruptcies, mortgage arrears, a run on deposits and loan defaults. The Dublin talks follow two days of discussions in Brussels involving eurozone and EU finance ministers and heated debate across Europe over a way forward for Ireland.

Snow Warning: Britain set for a winter blast SNOW SHOWERS and freezing weather could hit some parts of the UK next week, the Sky News weather department is warning. As Cornwall mops up after heavy rain and flooding, those in the east will need to break out the de-icer as Scandinavian winds blast Britain with cold air. Sky News weather forecaster Isobel Lang says there will be an increasing threat of snow from the end of next week, mainly for the north and east of the country, with daytime temperatures not rising much above 4C. The showers could be heavy as we move into December, bringing a risk of more serious accumulations. “The models are saying there is definite a trend towards colder and wintry weather,” she said. “The wind will swing in from Scandinavia, bringing with it
the threat of snow to eastern parts at the end of next week. “It’s going to be an interesting week of weather.” Long range forecasts point to a cold and snowy start to December, especially in the east, with the chilly weather expected to last until at least the second week of the month. However, Lang said it was too early to say whether we will see a repeat of last year’s record-breaking winter, which saw much of the country covered in snow. Snow and freezing temperatures in December last year paralysed much of the UK, trapping Eurostar trains in the Channel Tunnel and hitting transport around the country in the run-up to Christmas. With Ladbrokes offering odds of 5/1 of snow falling in London on Christmas Day, Lang said it might be worth a bet a white Christmas. “I would not say no,” she added.
Conjoined twins thriving, a year on in Australia TWO CONJOINED twins who were separated a year ago in an operation that took 32 hours are thriving, their carers have revealed. The four-year-olds, originally from Bangladesh and living in an orphanage, were taken to Australia by the Children First Foundation charity after a medical team decided they could separate them. The girls - Trishna and Krishna - were joined at the head and shared brain tissue and blood vessels, and faced a long recovery after the ordeal of their operation at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. While Trishna is now a walking, talking, singing and dancing toddler, guardian and charity head Moira Kelly revealed, Krishna has had a harder time, having to overcome huge health issues brought about after the surgery. Who could imagine a year ago we would be where we are? I was really surprised how quick it was that we got used to them not being
joined. For the first six months after the operation, Krishna’s failing kidneys and infections in her new synthetic skull caused grave fears that were not publicly revealed. “The last six months have been a big improvement because she had a lot to get over. “She was frightened a lot and she was on so many drugs post surgery,” Ms Kelly told the Herald Sun. “She was on 12 drugs and now she is only on two.” Krishna would scream for hours on end at night for the first six months and
even today will not sleep unless Ms Kelly is lying beside her, where her sister was attached for the first three years of their lives. “If she wakes up and there is no one beside her she bursts into tears and starts screaming,” Ms Kelly said. “She has to physically feel me there and for some reason she grabs my neck. Trishy only gets upset if Krishy cries. She knows Krishy is a bit special and needs that extra attention, because she has had to watch it all happen. “She needs the time now to get over this because Trishy
is just going great guns.” Ms Kelly said life would never be the same for anyone connected with the process. “Who could imagine a year ago we would be where we are? I was really surprised how quick it was that we got used to them not being joined. “For the first few weeks I still dressed them from the legs up and now and again I would ask people which side they were taking when we were picking them up. “Then I would realise we didn’t have to do that any more.”
Fifa suspends two over World Cup vote claims FIFA has suspended two executive members accused of asking for money in exchange for World Cup votes but cleared both of corruption. Tahiti’s Reynald Temarii and Nigeria’s Amos Adamu will now be prevented from voting on the 2018 and 2022 hosts on December 2. Adamu became the first Fifa official to receive a ban for bribery, while Temarii found guilty of breaching rules in Fifa’s ethics codes on loyalty and confidentiality. A 10,000 Swiss francs (£6,341) fine and three-year suspension was issued to Asamu. Temarii will be suspended for one year and was ordered to pay 5,000 (£3,170). The pair were already under provisional
Page 14
suspensions after the claims emerged in an undercover Sunday Times investigation. Four other former executive members who are still Fifa officials - Slim Aloulou, Amadu Diakite, Ahongalu Fusimalohi and Ismael Bhamjee - have also been suspended. Each was fined 10,000 Swiss francs. Adamu, who represents the West African Football Union, has signalled his intention to fight the ruling, releasing a statement in response. “I am profoundly disappointed with the ethics committee’s findings and had honestly believed I would be exonerated of any charges by now,” he said. “As yet I have not been advised of the grounds of the decision but regardless, I will be lodging a full appeal
against it with immediate effect.” The decisions follow a three-day hearing of the world football governing body’s ethics committee. Each member suspended will have 10 days to lodge an appeal. The committee has also cleared joint 2018 World Cup bidders Spain/Portugal and 2022 bidders Qatar of claims they colluded to trade votes. In terms of the corruption probe, Mr Adamu’s position was seen to be in greater danger because it is claimed he asked for money for projects to be paid via a family company. Mr Temarii - who represents Oceania - insisted he was merely wanting to boost football facilities in New Zealand and was not seeking any personal gain. Both men had denied any wrongdoing.

New album sees SuBo smash the biggest records SUSAN BOYLE has become the first female artist to simultaneously have a number one album in the US and UK twice in less than a year. Her album The Gift reached number one in the UK on Sunday - and it has just been announced she has taken the top spot across the Atlantic too. It comes after her debut album I Dreamed A Dream achieved the same success following its release last year. The only other acts to have achieved this in the history of music were The Monkees in 1967 and the Beatles in 1969, her record company has said. Boyle - who is fondly known as Subo - said: “I’ve never felt happier in all my life. This is an amazing
result and one I never expected.” The Scot was catapulted from obscurity to global stardom after appearing on last year’s Britain’s Got Talent contest. The singer, from West Lothian, became an international star after her performance of I Dreamed A Dream from the musical Les Miserables stunned the audience and judges on the ITV1 show. Britain’s Got Talent judge Simon Cowell said: “I’m thrilled for Susan, she has once again defied the odds. She is my superwoman.” In 2009, I Dreamed A Dream became the biggest selling album in the world and fastest selling in the history of the charts - with more than 10 million copies sold - and breaking all preorder sales records on Amazon. The Gift was released last Monday.
Dole queue not so long as unemployment falls THE NUMBER of unemployed people in the UK fell by 9,000 in the three months to the end of September to 2.45 million, new figures show. There was also a drop in the number claiming unemployment benefits in October, with 3,700 fewer people in line for the dole. That took the total claimant count to 1.47 million, the first monthly fall since July which came despite moving some lone parents from income support to jobseekers’ allowance. While the figures appear encouraging, they also show 67,000 more people had to take part-time jobs or become self employed after
HACKERS are tricking internet users into buying anti-virus protection and then stealing their banking details, security experts have warned. The malicious software allows conmen to infiltrate computers. Investigators fear criminal gangs are pocketing millions of pounds in the scam, which sees them posing as legitimate IT companies and coldcalling victims. The software can be downloaded for about £30 – but it allows the hackers to steal personal details and combine it with credit card information from the sale to commit further crimes. Sharon Lemon, who is responsible for fighting cyber crime at the Serious and Organised Crime Agency (Soca), said the con was “big business”.
Page 16
failing to find a full-time position. Meanwhile, the number of people out of work for longer than a year jumped by 20,000 to 817,000 and there was a similar rise in those out of a job for over six months. Employment Minister Chris Grayling said he was “always cautious about a single month’s figures” but that the latest numbers were “a step in the right direction”. “The private sector is leading the way and creating jobs and opportunities for people across the country,” he said, claiming that many of the public sector jobs being shed had already been lost. “Today’s figures show that businesses are responding well and we will continue to help them expand and develop, as the economy grows.”
However, union leaders expressed concern about the rising rate of long-term unemployed and a fall in the number of job vacancies. TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: “The UK has 2.5 million people out of work, not because we’re a nation of workshy scroungers without a work ethic, but because, with an average five unemployed people chasing every vacancy, there is a distinct lack of jobs. “The number of people who have been out of work for a year or longer has more than doubled since January 2008. “The Government should stop blaming unemployed people for their predicament and start creating rather than cutting jobs.” Responding to the criticism, the Department for Work and
Pensions (DWP) argued that the coalition Government was focused on supporting jobs growth in the private sector. “There are jobs available in the economy with Jobcentre Plus alone taking on over 70,000 new vacancies every week - that’s around one million coming up through Jobcentre Plus every three months,” a spokesman said. The DWP said while employment has risen by nearly 300,000 over the last year, around two thirds of this involved people who were not born in the UK. New benefit figures show there are still around five million people claiming out of work benefits, underlining the need for “root and branch reform” of the welfare system, according the department.
Gangs steal bank details with huge anti-virus con
Web users should ignore cold calls from companies offering free virus checks, and be very cautious of any on-screen pop ups. She said: “In recent cases, we have seen gangs employing 300 to 400 people to run their operations and using call centre-scale set ups to target victims en masse.” Ms Lemon said some gangs even fork out tens of thousands of pounds a month to pay other web companies to
advertise the fake software. The warning came at the start of an internet security awareness week organised by GetSafeOnline.org, which is supported by Government bodies, police and private companies. One in four adult web users in Britain have been approached by someone offering to check their computer for viruses, according to research by the group. Tony Neate, of
GetSafeOnline.org, said: “Web users should ignore cold calls from companies offering free virus checks and be very cautious of any on-screen pop ups. “Most reputable IT providers do not approach customers in this way.” Government minister Baroness Neville-Jones said it was “encouraging” to see web users were more securityaware, but warned criminals will use “increasingly sophisticated methods to take advantage where they can”. Last month, computer security expert Matthew Anderson, 33, of Drummuir, Aberdeenshire, admitted being a key member of an international hacking group involved in a similar scam.

London man has shelled out £29m to be in the pink! A RARE pink diamond was sold at auction to a London jeweller for a world-record £29 million in Geneva on Tuesday. Laurence Graff bought the 24.78-carat “fancy intense pink” diamond, which he promptly named “The Graff Pink”. “It is the most fabulous diamond I’ve ever seen and I’m delighted to have bought it,” he said, in a statement released by Sotheby’s, which offered the stone at its Geneva sale. The price was almost double that achieved by the blue
35.56-carat WittelsbachGraff diamond in 2008, which was also bought by Mr Graff. David Bennett, head of Sotheby’s jewellery division, confirmed: “This is the highest price ever bid for a jewel at auction,” as the audience in Geneva’s Beau Rivage hotel erupted with applause. Four bidders competed for the pink diamond, which was last sold 60 years ago in New York. Amsterdam jeweller Mart van Drunen said: “Everybody was surprised it went that high. He clearly wants to have all the rarest diamonds in the world.” He added that ongoing stock-market doubts had also helped drive up the value of
gold and precious jewels. Mr Graff had the blue diamond recut after purchase, to the displeasure of purists who considered it an act of vandalism against a unique object. It is not known whether he plans to alter the pink diamond, which Sotheby’s says has a flaw unnoticeable to the naked eye, but could be graded as internally flawless after re-polishing. The Geneva auction included items once belonging to Christina Onassis, daughter of the Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis, and Cristina Ford, second wife of Henry Ford’s grandson, Henry Ford II.

Some religions view pigs as being unclean and ban the eating of pork, and when customers complained to The Early Learning Centre that the HappyLand Goosefeather Farm toys included a pig, it had to go! But others complained about the missing porker, so back it came. Now, those customers have been told they can apply for their missing pigs through the store’s website.
The £25 interactive set, which also has a chicken, a horse, a cow and a sheep, makes the relative animal noises when buttons are pressed. But when a mum heard a distinct “oink” from the pigsty button but no pig in her daughter’s birthday present, she contacted the shop. An advert for the farm shows the sty being patrolled by a hen, and the baffled mum was told by email: “Previously, the pig was part of the Goosefeather Farm. However, due to customer feedback and religious reasons, this is no longer part of the farm. But the retailer has now performed a U-turn and agreed to bring back the pigs after some families hit back

at the complaints. The mother, named only as Caroline, said: ‘This is pc gone loopy. Surely if someone has an issue with a toy, then she shouldn’t buy it.” On an internet chatroom, another mother said: “I’m a Muslim and it doesn’t bother me. It is just another animal. What is the store going to do next? Ban the Peppa Pig cartoon? Ban books with pigs in?’ The farmyard set, suitable for toddlers from 18 months, also includes a dog, a farmer on a tractor, a farmer’s wife and a farmhouse. A spokesman for the Early Learning Centre said: “We have taken the decision to reinstate the pigs and will no longer sell the set in international markets, where it might be an issue.”

Branson the trolley dolly VIRGIN boss Sir Richard Branson will serve as a stewardess on an AirAsia flight, after losing a cross-dressing bet with a rival tycoon. The entrepreneur will don a red uniform and high heels for the challenge after his Formula One team lost out to Lotus - headed up by AirAsia’s group chief executive Tony Fernandes. The pair had both placed a bet at the beginning of the F1 championship, agreeing that the one whose team lost would serve as a “stewardess” on the winner’s airline. Although both teams completed the season with zero points on Sunday, Mr Fernandes’ Lotus team were
placed ahead of Sir Richard’s Virgin Racing in the rankings, thanks to their better race finishing positions. “We have had this great bet running all season and now it’s time for Richard to start preparing himself for some hard work and the likely pain of a pair of high heels,” Mr Fernandes said in a statement. Sir Richard will work on a Kuala Lumpur to London flight, seats for which will all be sold in an online auction for charity. “The date of the flight will be announced very soon and the aim is to raise as much money as we can for a good cause so the discomfort Richard will go through is worth as much as it possibly can be,” Mr Fernandes added. AirAsia is Southeast Asia’s biggest budget carrier.
Boy, 3, strikes gold with his metal detector
A THREE-year-old boy using a metal detector for the first time has unearthed a gold pendant estimated to be worth over £2.5m. James Hyatt made the discovery while out with his father and grandfather in Hockley, Essex. He had only been scanning the soil for a matter of minutes when it started beeping. The trio, from Billericay, started digging and just eight inches deep, they saw a glint and found what they now know to be a 500-year-old gold pendant. Dad Jason, 34, said: “James got a buzz after just five minutes. We saw a glint eight inches down and gently pulled the object out. Experts believe the rare
Page 18
locket, or reliquary, dates back to the 1500s and was used to hold alleged parts of Christ’s crown of thorns or crucifix. James, who is now four, said: “I was holding the detector and it went beep, beep, beep. “Then we dug into the mud. There was gold there. We didn’t have a map - only pirates have treasure maps.” An inquest has declared the reliquary treasure trove and it could be bought for millions by an interested institution, including the British Museum. Proceeds will be split with the family and the owner of the field where the pendant was found. Meanwhile archaeologists in west London say they have discovered an entire Roman landscape beneath
the surface of a listed estate. The find at Syon Park includes a Roman road, settlement and Roman burials which have been lying undiscovered just half a metre below the ground for nearly two thousand years. The remains were found during excavations by Museum of London Archaeology ahead of construction of a new hotel due to open in the grounds in 2011. Jo Lyon, senior archaeologist at Museum of London Archaeology said, “We were extremely fortunate to discover such a comprehensive repertoire of Roman finds and features so close to the surface. “They tell us a great deal about how the people of this village lived, worked and died. “The archaeology at Syon
Park has given us a valuable, rare insight into the daily life of an agricultural village on the outskirts of Londinium (London) that would have supplied the Roman city and provided shelter for travellers passing through. “It helps us build a picture of the Roman landscape and shows how the busy metropolis of Londinium connected with the rest of Roman Britain.” Thousands of Roman artefacts were recovered from the site, including two shale armlets, fragments of a lava quernstone as well as a Late Bronze Age (1000-700 BC) gold bracelet from an earlier age. More research is currently being carried out by the museum but the hotel is hoping to display some of the artefacts to guests when it opens next year.

Blast damage to Qantas jet A QANTAS jet came close to disaster before it made an emergency landing in Singapore. In images contained in a leaked report, a large hole is seen in the wing support of the Airbus A380, with metal ripped open, revealing the broken mechanism underneath. Another picture, posted with the report on the ‘Plane Talking’ blog, shows a fuel pipe that is ripped apart after an explosion believed to be due to an oil leak in the Rolls-Royce engine fired debris out towards the wing. An industry source confirmed to Sky News that the photographs and accompanying notes were genuine. “The wing of the jet shows remarkable structural strength in sustaining damage that might have destroyed the airliners of earlier decades,” notes blog author Ben Sandilands. “Reviewing these images
makes it clear why Qantas was quick, and correct, in grounding its A380 fleet,” he adds. Meanwhile, Qantas has said Rolls-Royce may need to replace up to 40 Trent 900 engines in the global fleet of Airbus A380 jumbo jets. Three carriers - Qantas, Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa - fly A380s powered by four giant Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines with a list price of around $350m (£219m) each. Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce said the airline is in discussions with Airbus about its fleet of A380s, which have been grounded since the incident earlier this month. “We’ve been talking to Airbus and Rolls-Royce and we under-

stand that the number (of engines to be replaced) is around 40,” Qantas chief Alan Joyce said. A source familiar with the process said Singapore Airlines, which operates 11 A380s, could be forced to change around two dozen, Qantas may have to swap around a dozen. Lufthansa, which operates the newest A380s, will have to change just one or two. Emirates, the biggest operator of the A380 globally, is not affected as it uses a different type of engine. Concern over the A380 follows the Singapore emergency landing on November 4th. Since then, airlines have sought to replace their existing
engines with newer versions. Rolls-Royce said last week that the problem with the Trent 900 engine is confined to a specific component in the turbine area. Aviation experts say the fault develops over time, so the new engines should not present any safety issues and will give RollsRoyce time to come up with a permanent solution. Analysts said the earnings impact on Qantas, which lost about 4-5% of its seat capacity with the A380 grounding, has been muted so far with a cost of around $1m (£0.6m) a day. And costs are expected to escalate quickly if Qantas cannot get the A380s back in the air for the busy southern hemisphere summer travel period which starts next month. So far, the world fleet of A380s comprises 37 aircraft, including 21 powered by the Trent 900, with four engines for each plane. Airbus has orders for almost 200 more A380s.
A sip of history: Cork pops on ancient bubbly BOTTLES of champagne have been popped open in Finland, after nearly 200 years under water. Experts and enthusiasts gathered at an event in Mariehamn to grab a glass of the ancient bubbly which was rescued from a shipwreck in the Baltic Sea. The vintage treasure included bottles of both Veuve Clicquot and the now defunct Juglar brands of champagne. Swedish wine connoisseaur Richard Juhlin had the honour of taking the first sip, which he described as “wonderful.” He noted that after thousands of years beneath the ocean the bubbly had lost it’s fizz, but not its flavour. I think what strikes you the most is that it’s such an intense aroma. It’s so different from anything you’ve tasted before. The expert found hints of chanterelles, honey, orange and peach in the Juglar, and linden blossoms and lime peels in the Veuve Clicquot. The deep-sea discovery was made by divers near the Aland Islands in July, who salvaged a total of 168 bottles
of champagne as well as crates of vintage beer. Aland’s culture minister Britt Lundeberg said: “All bottles are not intact but the majority are in good condition.” Five bottles have been kept by the governemnt as archaeological artefacts and those remaining will be sold at an auction. They are expected to fetch £44,000 ($77,000) each. The bottles that are not expected to last may be mixed with newer champagne to create a fresh blend. Connoisseurs haven’t been able to date the champagne precisely but it is believed to be from the early 19th century and is extremely well preserved. Veuve Clicquot’s Gerschel said: “The reason is the Baltic Sea offers perfect storage conditions. There is total darkness, and the water pressure is similar to what’s inside the bottle.” He believes the taste is very close to what it was when the champagne was first bottled. “It’s like a time machine” he said, “We think it’s exceptional that it’s not only drinkable but that it still has some fizz, after 200 years.”

Friday 19 November, 7:00pm - 10:00pm, BBC1 Despite the fact that last year the recession-hit nation was still collectively tightening its belt, this appeal raised an astonishing £20 million on the night with the final amount topping £39 million. Amazing what can be achieved by eating your own weight in baked beans, knitting a giant Pudsey Bear from used toffee wrappers or doing a 24-hour sponsored bungee jump. If you’re not out doing any of those fundraising activities, settle down for a marathon seven hours of entertainment hosted by Terry Wogan and Tess Daly. Just don’t forget to pledge money at some point. Among the highlights is a pop star version of Strictly Come Dancing (although based on Ann Widdecombe’s splendid turns, I’d like a political one), a peek at the Doctor Who Christmas episode and a special contribution from the casts of Corrie and Easties. Musical high notes include Take That, JLS (singing the official single) and the Script. And, of course, there’ll be a performance by the BBC newsreaders.

JOE ‘IN MY OPINION’ FERGUSON Weekly Update Email: joe.ferguson@canarianweekly.com
LET me get one thing straight before I get the emails of hate into the office over the weekend. I am a lover of the Royal Family. They do a lot for charity around the world, and they bring money into the UK because of tourism. And the fact that William and Harry are digging in and joined the forces at a very scary time in the world is pretty cool. But already, enough is enough over this engagement. Just 24 hours before the breaking news, Sky were showing the face of a moron who, during last week’s student riots, dropped a fire extinguisher from the top of a building into a police team, 200ft below. Thankfully, it missed as it could have killed someone. Because of the coverage Sky News gave this item, the guy gave himself up. I’m sure he was sitting in a cell thinking: “Why didn’t I wait until a few hours later and I could have gotten away with it?” He wouldn’t have done, obviously, and I do not wish for him
Page 36
A right Royal pain… to have done so. But with the coverage generated already, this Royal soon-to-be marriage is getting ridiculous. There is no other news it seems. The country of Ireland could soon be bankrupt, a British holiday-maker is raped allegedly, and shot dead in South Africa on her honeymoon. Her devastated husband is still there, while the pirates in Somalia were dropped half-a-million quid and their elderly victims were released. All news stories on Monday, but at the time of writing, they have now disappeared from the world. And all for what? Two people are getting married! I’m happy that two people are happy and looking forward to a future together. But the way it’s being blazed across our screens is really sickening. I know people will say: “But it is nice to have good news for a change.” Yes it is, but not at the cost of scrap-
ping any other news stories. And let’s face it, whatever you think or raise a smile to it all, how much will it change your life? To the real people of the world, it will not change one thing. Kate’s family will change, as they have a daughter who will one day be The Queen. Did you see her father on the news, telling the cameras how wonderful it all was? Had it been heartfelt, I might even have acknowledged a little smile, but the fact that he was reading from a piece of paper shocked me. And I can’t be the only one who thought, YOU WHAT? when William said he had given the bride-to-be his Mother’s engagement ring. The millions this young man has, and he gives his girlfriend secondhand jewellery? The Prime Minister said: “This is a great day for the country,” And I would love him to expand
on that quote. I think that a great day for any country would be a breakthrough in curing cancer and AIDS. Sorting out the banking system would also be a “great day”. But the news that William is to get married? C’mon! The news coverage has now gone into overload. Sky camped outside Buckingham Palace in case someone inside so much as farted. As usual, the only people interested in London are the old folk who think Hitler is still in power, and the American tourists. One half of a couple from the US who, it seemed, had cloned into each other by wearing the same outfits, actually said: “I was in New York the day the planes hit the buildings. We are in London on this day in history, and I have the same feeling.” I beg your American pardon! You have the same feeling from this as you did watching
more than 2,000 people die as the Twin Towers fell to the ground, killing police, fire-fighters and members of the public? Are they mad? The BBC decided to ask men and women serving in Afghanistan what their thoughts were on the breaking news. I say serving men and woman, but they were actually majors and generals, who have toe the line and go by protocol. I’m very sure those fighting on the front line were more worried about not stepping on a landmine and keeping their heads down. For those of you thinking that, as usual, I am just giving off about something that will go away soon, I hope you are right. Because until the very day of the wedding, this will roll on and on and on. We will not be able to get away from it. I love knowing what’s going on in the world but, because of
all this, it might just be impossible for me to get my daily current-affairs fix. Since 1986, nobody has had any interest in bone china. After that last wedding, involving Prince Andrew (Charles and Camilla don’t count), shares in the china plate and cup industry fell big-time. Which people really want this rubbish on their walls in the 21st century? You got it, the Americans! I have just watched on a news channel as a guy who owns a china store opened his now Aladdin’s Cave, with thousands of plates and cups that have collected dust over the years. And please remember this. Both William and Kate, as well as the Palace, have asked for their privacy to be respected. All the news channels are already demonstrating that they couldn’t care less about their privacy. I do care about it, so while you might think I am just being a little over the top, in fact, I am doing exactly what we all should be doing. Getting on with my own life!

DAVID PENNY Email: David.penny@canarianweekly.com
Tale of the Tenerife Cologans is real epic I ATTENDED the recent official launch of a new book relating to the history of Tenerife and, more specifically, covering the history of the Cologan family. One is closely interwoven with the other, covering the past three-and-a-half centuries, and I recently covered the Irish connection in my Canarian Weekly column, entitled These Irish Islands. I included in it a fleeting mention of the diplomat, Bernado Cologan y Cologan. For anyone interested, a substantially more complete account can be read in this comprehensive, 625-page work by Carlos Cologan Soriano, Los Cologan de Irelanda y Tenerife , (The Cologans of Ireland and Tenerife). The presentation, held in the Salon de Actos of the Canarian Parliament Building in Santa Cruz, was chaired by Doña Milagros Luis Brito, the Cabildo’s Education Councillor. As well as the author, Don Carlos, other top-table dignitaries included Don Ricardo Melchior, President of the Cabildo, His Excellency Justin Harman, The Republic of Ireland’s Ambassador to Spain, and His Grace, Don Hugo O’Donnell - Duke of
Estrada and 7th Duke of Tetuan. The latter is a decendent of Santa Cruz-born General Leopoldo O’Donnell y Jorris (Grandee of Spain, who served three times as the country’s Prime Minister in the mid-19th century). There was standing room only in the packed auditorium, and among the great and the good of Santa Cruz was a contingent of Irish residents from South Tenerife, as well as past and present Irish Consuls Jamie Willis and Ward Woods. In addition to Hugo O’Donnell’s Irish connection, he also attended in his capacity as President of Spain’s Royal Academy of History (Academia Real de la Historia), speaking at some length of the strong historic ties which exist between, and unite, the two nations. As well as being a naval historian of considerable repute, Don Hugo is former naval commander and ex-Minister for the Navy. Cabildo President Ricardo Melchior Navarro himself has a strong Irish link. In May 2002, in recognition of his work in the field of renewable energy, he was
19 November 2010 - 25 November 2010
appointed Doctor “Honoris Causa” of Sciences by The National University of Ireland at a ceremony held at The University of Cork. Mr Justin Harman, who, prior his current post, served as Ireland’s Ambassador to The Russian Federation from 2003-2009, also recounted anecdotes relating to families of Irish origin and their influence on the Island and, in particular, those of the Cologan dynasty. The book itself traces the history of eight generations o f
the Cologans on Tenerife, and describes in great detail the family’s history, from the early years in their native Waterford, following their voyage through to their settlement in the Orotarva Valley and their input in the establishment of one of the first commercial structures here. It was not only the economy of Tenerife to which the family contributed greatly over the ages, but also the cultural and social aspects of Island life. The Cologans have been involved in many branches of the development of trade and commerce, with Tomas
Fidel Cologan playing a leading role in the formative years in the field of tourism, as far back as the 1840s. And Bernado Cologan emerged to become one of Spain’s best-remembered Diplomats (as Spain’s Ambassador to China), famous for his role in quelling The Boxer Rebellion in the early 20th century. The book is a collection of anecdotes and surprising situations and, as if to show the diversity of the family’s
activities, they even have a flower named after them, the Cologania, so called as a gesture of gratitude from a famous 19th century botanist to whom the family had played host. The author, Carlos Cologan Soriano, said the book came about from an interest he had in the vast collection of, meticulously-maintained, family documents and photographs. And from his investigations into this hoard of information, he
has compiled this epic work. He went on to state his satisfaction with the book, describing it as being “not an exclusive book of my family’s history, but a story told through the history of my family”. Following the presentation, it was considered right and fitting that our party should retire to the nearby JC Murphy and raise a glass of the black stuff to the family and the book. Viva Los Cologan!

DIY decorators reminded of Christmas ladder risks AS CHRISTMAS approaches, many people may be thinking of when to start putting up decorations both indoors and in their gardens, but festive decorators have been reminded of some basic precautions to make sure they remain safe while doing so. With a recent report from Go Compare finding over five per cent of people in the UK have suffered an accident
while putting up seasonal accessories. The advice to people to ensure their ladder is placed away from doors at an appropriate angle on a firm, level surface and that the feet are stable and slip-resistant. Maintaining three points of contact with the equipment at all times is also recommended, with either “one hand and both feet or both hands and one foot” remaining on the ladder at all times. Individuals working above the floor should make sure they avoid carrying awkward loads or making any movements, such as stretching or leaning, which might cause them to overbalance, the advice suggests.
Not many happy returns for Brits
Homemade home
This week there was some random, very twee programme called Homemade home on Channel 4. But it turned out to be very good. Presenter Kirstie Alsopp basically is championing all things homemade, not only is it money saving but there is a great sense of achievement gained from making your own possession whether it be a tea cosy or a garden bench. In the last episode of Kirstie’s Homemade Home, Mosaic artist Emma Biggs
Page 38
taught her the ‘direct’ method of mosaic - a nice and easy technique for a novice. It involves choosing materials, sticking them down and then grouting the mosaic to finish it off. The only skill that is needed is a little bit of patience. The how to guide of making a mosaic is on Kirstie’s along with absolutely everything else. There is so much useful home information on this site you’ll be like a kid in a sweet shop not knowing what to look at first. http://www.channel4.com/ 4homes/on-tv/kir stie-shomemade-home
Christmas shoppers need to check returns policies and keep receipts when buying presents, as more than seven million Brits have experienced problems returning unwanted gifts, finds new research from consumer champion Which? Legal Service.
Experts from the legal telephone advice line found that 9.9 million consumers have tried to return an unwanted gift in the last two years, and 82 per cent of those had difficulty getting a refund. Around half of those who were refused a refund were told it was because they didn’t have the receipt, while 16 per cent couldn’t get their money back as the shop didn’t allow refunds for unwanted goods. When it came to knowing their rights, just 47 per cent of people were aware that they have no legal right to return something to a high street store simply because they’ve changed their mind. Only 18 per cent always check returns policies before making purchases in shops. People are more likely to check the returns policy when shopping online, with a third (34 per cent) always doing so, but they were often unaware which items you can and can’t return. One in ten mistakenly thought they could get a refund on flowers if they
simply changed their mind about them, and three in ten wrongly believed they could return CDs or DVDs that have been unwrapped. Which? chief executive Peter Vicary-Smith says: “Our independent research shows that many people don’t know what their rights are when shopping on the high street or online. But just knowing some of the basics could mean you won’t be stuck with unwanted gifts you can’t return.” 80 per cent of online shoppers also didn’t know how long they legally have to tell a website they want to return an item, while a fifth (19 per cent) of those who had bought gifts for a birthday or Christmas failed to receive them in time. Which? Legal Service offers the following advice to people who are hitting the high street or shopping online for Christmas gifts: 1. Check the returns policy: Any returns policy in a store can be as strict as the store wishes so it should be read carefully. Many shops
will refund, exchange or give credit notes as a gesture of goodwill. Ask whether the policy is extended for Christmas purchases. 2. Keep the receipt: It’s always best to keep the receipt, but you can still try to return goods using any proof of purchase, including a bank statement or credit card bill. 3. Check who pays for P&P: When shopping online, the website’s terms and conditions should say who is responsible for paying postage to return unwanted goods. If they don’t say, they pay! 4. Not all goods are refundable: Many items such as CDs, DVDs and computer games for example can be refused a refund if they are no longer sealed. 5. Know your online rights: Most purchases made online, by post or by phone benefit from a ‘cooling-off period’, starting the minute you place the order and ending 7 working days the day after receiving the goods, during which time you are free to cancel.

DAVID HUDGELL Getting to the root of your gardening problems! Email: David.hudgell@canarianweekly.com
Your questions answered To grow your own food is so satisfying Each week I receive a number of gardening questions, of which I try and answer then through the subjects covered.
THE NUMBER of people who use their gardens to grow their own food has seen a huge increase in recent years.
Here is one such question that I’ve received. Dear David, I hope you can help us, we have lived here for three years now. Have taken over an old Finca, and have vines surrounding the edge of the land. Have tried copying our canarian neighbours but must still be missing something. Have watered, pruned, when they did, but we are still doing something wrong. The grapes start to grow, then all of a sudden the leaves fall off. We don’t know where to find the dust that they use. Is that all that we are missing, or is there something else. Regards CB Dear CB, I don’t have vines, but I’ve done a little research and spoken to those who do grow them and this is what I’ve found. The annual growth cycle of grapevines is the process that takes place in the vineyard each year, beginning with bud break in the spring and culminating in leaf fall in autumn followed by winter dormancy. From a winemaking perspective, each step in the process plays a vital role in the development of grapes with ideal characteristics for making wine. Viticulturalists and vineyard managers monitor the effect of climate, vine disease and pests in facilitating or impeding the vines progression from bud break, flowering, fruit set, veraison, harvesting, leaf fall and dormancy-reacting if need be with the use of viticultural practices like canopy management, irrigation, vine training and the use of agrochemicals. The stages of the annual growth cycle usually become observable within the first year of a vine’s life. The amount of time spent at each stage of the growth
That is according to Marc Rosenberg, news editor at Amateur Gardening Magazine, who said it is a “real satisfaction to say ‘I grew that and it tasted good’”. He puts the rise in homegrown fruit and vegetable down to a combination of the effects of the recession and the rising concern many people have over where their
cycle depends on a number of factors-most notably the type of climate (warm or cool) and the characteristics of the grape variety. The grape starts its annual growth cycle in the spring with bud break. In the Northern Hemisphere, this stage begins around March while in the Southern Hemisphere it begins around September when daily temperatures begin to surpass 10 °C (50 °F). If the vine had been pruned during the winter, the start of this cycle is signaled by a “bleeding” of the vine. This bleeding occurs when the soil begins to warm and osmotic forces pushes water, containing a low concentration of organic acids, hormones, minerals and sugars, up from the root system of the vine and it is expelled from the cuts (or “wounds”) left over from pruning the vine. During this period a single vine can “bleed” up to 5 litres (1.3 gallons) of water. Tiny buds on the vine start to swell and eventually shoots begin to grow from the buds. Buds are the small part of the vine that rest between the vine’s stem and the petiole (leaf stem). Inside the buds contain usually three primordial shoots.
19 November 2010 - 25 November 2010
These buds appear in the summer of previous growth cycle green and covered in scales. During winter dormancy they turn brown until the spring when the vine begins the process of bud break and the first sign of green in the vineyard emerges in the form of tiny shoots. The energy to facilitate this growth comes from reserves of carbohydrate stored in roots and wood of the vine from the last growth cycle. Eventually the shoots sprout tiny leaves that can begin the process of photosynthesis, producing the energy to accelerate growth. In warm climates, after about 4 weeks the growth of the shoots starts to rapidly accelerate with the shoots growing in length an average of 3 cm (1 in) a day. In temperate climates, where temperatures can reach above 10 °C (50 °F) in mid-winter, some early budding varieties (such as Chardonnay) can be at risk of premature bud break. This is a potential viticultural hazard in places like Western Australia where warm currents from the Indian Ocean can coax Chardonnay vines to prematurely bud in the mid-winter month of July.
After bud break, the young shoots are very vulnerable to frost damage with vineyard managers going to great lengths protect the fragile shoots should temperature dramatically drop below freezing. This can include setting up heaters or wind circulators in the vineyard to keep cold air from settling on the vines. Pruning At the end of the year you should tie in the new shoots cutting them back by 25% to encourage the formation of new fruiting spurs the following year. Finally tar washing with jeyes fluid in the winter has the advantage of killing all the pests that are over wintering in the stems and buds. This is carried out by mixing 1 part jeyes fluid to 30 parts water and spraying it on to the vine until it runs off soaking the stems and branches. The dust you mention here in the Canaries is a sulphur mix, now my understanding is that you used to have to make your own but now a good garden centre should stock the ready made liquid. It’s difficult to say without seeing the leaves but it sounds like they have some leaf disease. I hope this helps and good luck.
food comes from and what pesticides it may contain. A huge increase in the variety of pest and diseaseresistant plants has also encouraged individuals to take up growing food as a hobby, Mr Rosenberg continued, adding that while it may not have many financial benefits, there is enjoyment to be had in “getting out there and nurturing something for a bit”. Recently, a study by Mintel revealed one in five consumers in the UK are growing their own food and the waiting list for allotments has grown by 20 per cent in 2010.
Gardeners’ major improvement plans for 2011 revealed
A NEW survey has revealed the projects gardeners intend to be focusing on in the next twelve months, with the results showing a third of people are planning major outdoor improvements. The research, which was carried out by Hangar Seven, found 33 per cent are expecting to undertake large projects that are likely to cost over £1,000, while 80 per cent predicted they would spend around £540 on maintenance and plants. Many intend to purchase garden buildings such as
sheds and conservatories as part of their garden developments. Features including vegetable patches and a perfect lawn were also high on the list of desired items. According to the study, many people use friends and family as their primary source of gardening advice, with 44 per cent saying they had first sought guidance from people they knew compared with 38 per cent who stated they turn to the internet as a starting point. Elsewhere, the Daily Telegraph has reminded those preparing their gardens for winter that now is the time to be planting trees and spring-flowering bulbs ready for next year.

CARL PATTISON from Robot, answers your hair questions
DEAR CHRISTINE Your resident Agony Aunt Email: agony.aunt@canarianweekly.com
Email: carl.pattison@canarianweekly.com
Hardly a snip at 12 euros! ONE of my regular clients gave me the idea to write about this week’s subject, but I feel as though I’m treading over the same ground again. She asked me why, when one of her friends paid 12 euros for a haircut, she complained bitterly about the quality of the cut and the service - and she regretted having gone to the salon in the first place. Yes, I know things are still difficult for all of us. But even in these times, I still cannot believe you’d pay 12 euros for something you are going to wear every day for, say, the next six weeks! So, divide it up and it amounts to just two euros every week. TWO EUROS! Is that all someone thinks of her image to regret spending that sum on herself? I don’t believe a person can’t put five euros away every week to afford a decent haircut every six weeks or so. You can relate this story to any product or service. The old saying “you get what you pay for” holds true. Without going on about this too much, it’s in times like these that we do look at what we are paying for, and what we are receiving for our money. So my client and I ended our conversation agreeing that to many, and to her especially,
make-up, clothes and, more importantly, hair, made her look and feel so much better. I’m not saying we all need to spend a fortune on our appearance, but investing in good clothes, make-up and hairstyling doesn’t have to break the bank. Even if you have your hair coloured in the salon as well, an average cut and colour will cost around 70 euros (ranging from a root colour to foil hi-lites). Let’s again divide that up and, say, if you visit every six weeks, it’s still only 12.50 euros per week - less than two euros a day! As stylists, we try so hard to keep our clients happy. We train for years sometimes, and we do courses and colour workshops, all to keep ourselves up-to-date and in front with our trade. Yet sometimes, and I know I
speak for us all, we say “what for”? We aren’t in an industry which can do “bargain cuts” or “buy one, get one free”, because we are not a product but a service. You can’t put a price on what some of us do. So to finish off, I’d just like to explain one more thing. The next time you visit your salon, spare a thought for the salon and stylist, and look at the amount of work he/she puts into your hair. Forget the glamorous image this profession holds, because it’s hard work, not only physically but mentally, too. Yes, we keep on doing it and putting up with it. Why? Because all the hairdressers I’ve ever met do this job for one reason, and that’s because our heart is in it 100%. If not, then we shouldn’t be doing it. Carl
Dear Christine, My husband, Jim, and I had many happy holidays in our Tenerife “retreat” - a little finca in the hills. After he died, a year ago, my sister offered to come here with me so I could carry on as before. Her husband had affairs and left her years ago, and I thought we’d have a good time together. But when I mentioned my happy childhood, she got really nasty, saying mum and dad spoiled me. She said I used to ruin all her games and that she had a terrible childhood. I don’t remember it like that at all. I was the younger one and always more sociable than she was, but I’m sure our parents loved us both the same. I had imagined us happily reminiscing on the past, but she gets uptight every time I mention it. She doesn’t like me to speak about Jim, either. We had a good marriage and I like talking about him. She’s flying out to join me soon and we’re spending the rest of the winter together. Can you please advise me on how we can get along better? Gwen
Dear Gwen, I’m sorry that you and your sister didn’t bond well on your last holiday. You can stop her getting upset about your childhood by simply steering clear of that subject. After all, it’s not uncommon for siblings to have different viewpoints on what happened in the past. Alternatively, you could try turning her thinking around, perhaps saying something like: :It was lovely the way you looked after me when we were young. I’m sorry, I was a bit of a pain at times.” If she accepts your apology and doesn’t get upset, you’re
on to a winner and could try a few more self-deprecating words, so long as they’re honest and in good faith. If she still gets upset, there’s more reason than ever for you to avoid the subject like the plague. A bit of honest flattery never goes amiss, either. You could compliment your sister’s hair, her lipstick, her clothes, her perfume - the list of possibilities is endless. It would be nice, too, if you let her make decisions as to where you eat, and so on, while you’re on your holiday. It will all go towards boosting her ego, which in turn will allow her to let go of the jealousy. As for your need to speak of your husband, it’s a great way of coming to terms with your loss. I think you should avoid mentioning your wonderful lives together, though, at least with your sister, as that will only emphasise the difficult time she had with her own husband. There’s no reason you shouldn’t say things like, ‘This is where Jim and I used to come and he loved it here”, or “Jim and I liked going on the boat trips. Do you fancy trying one”? Whatever you do and say - or don’t say - your husband will be in your heart. Remember that. I hope you have a great holiday! Christine Dear Christine, I’m nearly 18, and next year I want to move to Florida like my elder sister and her husband. My parents are dead set against it, though. Whenever I’ve argued with them about this, I’ve lost my temper and used very bad language. I use this type of language in general conversation with my friends, but know I should show more respect for my
parents as they’re decent people who tried to bring me up well. I feel like I’m a terrible person for the way I’ve spoken to them, and for planning to leave them alone here as I’m definitely going to Florida. I’m eaten up with guilt over this and it’s getting me down. Lauretta Lou
Dear Lauretta Lou, You are not a bad person for swearing at your parents. However, swearing at your parents is a bad thing to do. You know that, and it’s partly why you feel so guilty. Swearing shows a lack of articulacy as well as a lack of respect, so it needs to be addressed. At nearly 18, you should be able to exert some control over your language, even when you’re feeling very emotional. All it takes is a split-second of thought before you come out - or don’t come out - with that bad word. It’s a very important split-second, which can make a lot of difference. You’re also feeling guilty for planning to live in Florida. Well, you really don’t need to be. You’re almost an adult now and free to start making adult decisions. It’s only natural that your parents don’t want their remaining child to move away, though, so if you keep banging on about how wonderful you think the States are, and how much you’re looking forward to freedom, then don’t. It will only upset them. Instead, give them time to come to terms with your decision, and keep calmly reassuring them that you love them, saying you’re grateful for all they’ve done. Make it clear, too, that you will stay in close contact when you leave, mentioning Skype phones, email, texts, phone-calls, letters and Facebook. If you can change your attitude toward your parents, you’re more likely to obtain their blessing in relation to your planned move. I hope you can help them come to terms with this. Christine Christine Craggs-Hinton is the author of 18 self-help books, including ‘How to Lower your Blood Pressure’, ‘Living with Fibromyalgia’, and ‘Overcoming Anorexia’. Her books are available from all good UK bookshops as well as ‘The Paper Shop’, Apolo Centre and ‘Bookswop’, Edificio Cristianos 1, both of which are in Los Cristianos.

Cervical cancer jab much better for young girls GIRLS who are given the cervical cancer jab may need screening only twice in their lifetime. Cervical cancer should become a “rare disease, thanks to the introduction of the vaccine, according to Professor Peter Sasieni, from Queen Mary, University of London. Those who have the jab when they are 12 or 13 would need testing for the disease again only when they are 30 and 45, he said. The vaccine protects against key strains of the sexually-transmitted infection human papillomavirus (HPV),
which causes most cases of cervical cancer. Prof Sasieni suggests the current smear-test programme, which sees women invited for screening every 35 years, could be replaced with HPV testing. The HPV test picks up 13 strains of the disease, which account for virtually all cervical cancer cases. Typically, it takes over ten years for a cancer to develop after HPV infection. Research shows that cancer caused by HPV types not prevented by the current vaccines, take even longer. From September 2008 to July 2010 in the UK, at least four million doses of the Cervarix jab were given.
Spot of bother? It can be cleaned up ADULTS who are born deaf can see clearer than people with good hearing, according to research by the University of Sheffield. A study conducted there showed that deaf adults and teenagers reacted more quickly to objects in their peripheral vision than those with good hearing. Dr Joanna Robinson, research programme manager for the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID), said the results could have positive consequences for deaf people.
“This research shows that adults who have been deaf since birth may have advantages over hearing people in terms of their range of vision,” she said. “For example, deaf people could be more proficient in jobs which depend on the ability to see a wide area of activities and respond quickly to situations, such as sports referees, teachers or CCTV operators.” Twenty-five deaf children, involved in the trial, compared data from a series of tests with the results and characteristics of deaf adult participants. Each child, aged between 5-15, was asked to fix

his/her vision on a central point and detect a flash of light from an LED “star”. The children responded by moving a joystick to “catch the stars”, as though they were playing a computer game. Researchers found that adults born deaf were much faster at detecting and locating changes at the edge of their visual field than the hearing participants. But deaf children were much slower than hearing children to react to visual stimuli. Dr Charlotte Cordina, who undertook the study as part of her RNID-funded PhD in Ophthalmology and
Orthoptics, said: “We found that deaf children saw less peripherally than hearing children, but typically went on to develop better-thannormal peripheral vision by adulthood. “Important vision changes are occurring as deaf children grow up, and one theory is that they have not learnt to focus their attention on stimuli in the periphery until their vision matures at the age of 11 or 12. “As research in this area continues, it will be interesting to identify factors which can help deaf children to make this visual improvement earlier.”
OVER 85% of the world’s teenagers suffer with some type of acne, many of them also carrying their skin problems well into adulthood. Acne is the most common, doctor-treated disease and, to keep things simple, most dermatologists classify acne into two groups: blackheads/whiteheads (comedones) and red bumps. They will treat each type differently. Blackheads are the most common because they are generally more numerous on the face and shoulders. But the golden rule with pimples is: DON’T touch or squeeze them. There are several natural ways to get rid of acne, but
there is no quick remedy. Instead, it’s all about consistency of skin care. Do clean your face often with a facial wash and not soap, as soap dries out the skin. Also, make sure that you are not using a harsh scrub, and don’t use anything with alcohol in it. Don’t use oily-based cosmetics and drink lots of water. Another natural way to rid your face of acne is steam cleaning, simply by holding your face over a bowl of hot water (with a towel over your head) for a few minutes. This helps to sweat out the dirt and impurities in your face. If you are still struggling and worried, do consult your doctor, who will advise you, or refer you to a skin specialist.

Time to give the pud a good stir! STIR-UP Sunday is an informal term in Anglican churches for the last Sunday before the season of Advent, and is the traditional day to make Christmas pudding, or the mincemeat for mince pies. This year, it falls on 28th November, and making your pud or cake early means it really does benefit from all this maturing. The flavour of the spices mellow and deepen, while the fruits plump up and soften. The term “Stir-up” comes from the opening words of the Collect for the day in the Book of Common Prayer of 1549 and later (a translation of the Roman Missal’s Collect “Excita, quæsumus”):
Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people; that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works, may of thee be plenteously rewarded; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Through an association of ideas, the day subsequently became connected, especially in England, with the preparation of Christmas puddings in readiness for the great day. In the Book of Common Prayer of 1662 and later, this Collect is listed for “The Twenty-Fifth Sunday After Trinity”, with a rubric (direction for the procedure of the service) specifying that this Collect “shall always be used upon the Sunday next before Advent”. It reinforced the significance of this day as forming part of the preparation for
the Advent season. The rubric is necessary because the last Sunday before Advent does not always fall on the 25th Sunday after Trinity. That’s because Trinity Sunday is a moveable feast and the Advent season is fixed, so the number of weeks in between varies from year to year. In recent years, most provinces of the Anglican Communion have adopted the practice of the Roman Catholic Church in observing this Sunday as Christ the King (sometimes under the name The Reign of Christ). Popular attachment to the Stir-up Collect has, however, caused it to be retained (in contemporary language) in the liturgies of several provinces. The Church of England’s Common Worship uses it as
Page 42
the Post-Communion prayer, with a rubric stating that it “may be used as the Collect at Morning and Evening Prayer during this week”. In the US Episcopal Church, the Collect appointed for the Third Sunday of Advent in the Book of Common Prayer (1979) begins with the phrase “stir up your power O Lord”. Thus, in many Episcopal Churches, the Third Sunday of Advent, also known as Gaudete (rejoice) Sunday, is referred to as “Stir-up Sunday”. Marion Hatchett, in his definitive work Commentary on the American Prayer Book, notes that in the PreReformation English Sarum Rite, Collects for four of the last five Sundays before Christmas began with the word excita or “stir up”. A similar Collect to the one
appointed in the BCP 1979 appears in the recent book authorised for use in the Church of England, Common Worship, appointed for the Second Sunday of Advent. but the phrase “raise up” is used instead. How to lay on a tasty Christmas Day treat MAKE this pudding a month or so before Christmas Day and feed it with alcohol regularly, allowing the flavours to develop fully. Ingredients 225g/8oz golden caster sugar 225g/8oz vegetarian suet 340g/12oz sultanas 340g/12oz raisins 225g/8oz currants 110g/4oz candied peel, chopped 110g/4oz plain flour 110g/4oz fresh white breadcrumbs 55g/2oz flaked almonds 1 lemon, zest only 5 eggs, beaten 1 level tsp ground cinnamon 1 level tsp mixed spice 5g/1 level tsp freshly grated nutmeg pinch of salt 150ml/5fl oz brandy or rum Preparation 1. Lightly grease 4x600ml/1pint or 2x1.2-litre/2-pint
pudding basins. 2. Mix together all the dry ingredients. 3. Stir in the eggs and brandy and mix well. 4. Spoon the mix into basins. Put a circle of baking parchment and foil over the top of each basin and tie securely with string. Make a string handle from one side of the basin to the other so it is easier to pick the basin out of the pan after cooking. Wrapping pudding for steaming 1. Put the basins in a large steamer of boiling water and cover with a lid. Boil for 5-6 hours, topping the boiling water up from time to time, if necessary. If you do not have a steamer, put the basins in a large pan on inverted saucers on the base. Pour in boiling water to come one-third of the way up the sides of the pudding bowls. Cover and steam as before. 2. Cool: Change the baking parchment and foil covers for fresh ones and tie up as before. Store in a cool cupboard until Christmas Day. 3. To serve: Steam for two hours and serve with brandy butter, rum sauce, cream or home-made custard.

CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd) A nice weekend is on the cards for you, and a very amusing one, too, as you find yourself involved in some sort of scandal that is likely to be more harmless than hurtful to anyone. Your element of water sees you asking for more than you really want in your career, and it really is time to go for what you want, not what others desire.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23rd-Dec 21st) It is okay to have an opinion on what your close ones do –of course it is okay! But to push them into something they may not want is just going to bring trouble your way. Conversations with Geminis can open up a whole new world of possibilities in your career from Tuesday. CAPRICORN (Dec 22nd-Jan 20th) You must try to pay attention to detail in your work in the next few days. TAURUS (April 21stMay 21st) You’ve been trying to get the attention of someone who can change your career status. Rather than going for the loud and exhibitionist option, why not prove your worth through actions and not words. Overtime done from Monday is a great starting point. GEMINI (May 22ndJune 21st) Your ruling planet, Mercury, offers last-minute, exciting travel this weekend. If you don’t like the situation you are in, then sit tight. You’ll have to pay another £6 to even set foot in our airport
“
PASSENGERS using Durham Tees Valley airport will now have to pay an extra £6 every time they travel - to help save it from closing down.
The so-called Passenger Facility Fee was introduced on Monday, but it looks as though the move could backfire, even though similar schemes are in operation at Blackpool, Newquay and Norwich airports. Budget airline Ryanair may scrap its summer services to Spain in protest, and other airlines are monitoring the situation to see what impact the fee has. Travellers using the North-East airport already know because they have been hit in the pocket enough times in recent years. Apart from the actual tickets to Tenerife - budget flights from around £82 - travellers already pay an extra £33.95 in taxes, so another £6 will hardly be welcomed. The beleaguered airport has already suffered a dramatic
Page 44
ABTA told Canarian Weekly, ‘These facility charges are not illegal but we are concerned that customers may not be aware of them and they need prior warning to avoid an unwelcome surprise at the airport. We also would expect to see a marked improvement in customer service and an improvement in the customer experience from the few airports that are choosing to levy these charges.’
700,000 drop in passengers a year and now caters for just 300,000. But officials hope the new charges, and the possible introduction of charter flights to Cyprus next summer, will speed up a recovery. Following crisis talks with its financial backers, the airport’s operator Peel Airports hopes to raise around £500,000 a year by charging adults £6, and £2 for children aged 3-15. Passengers will pay the fee at machines in the terminal, which will issue tickets enabling them to pass through security and into the departure areas. Craig Richmond, Peel Airports chief executive, said the airport was losing millions of pounds every year and, unless it balanced the books, the region could lose what he called “a jewel of an airport”. He added: “I understand some people might be incensed by this announcement, given the economic climate. This is not an attempt to pad our pockets, but we must do it to survive. “Somebody has to pay for it, or Durham Tees Valley won’t exist. We won’t get bailed out by the Government, and our
investors are not going to be infinitely patient, writing cheques to keep the airport open. “If people within 50 miles of here like to fly out of Durham Tees Valley, we hope they will agree that £6 is not an unreasonable amount to keep the airport open. “If they don’t, and we can’t get the other things to happen, such as adding to our destinations, then at some point in the future, the investors will walk away. “If I were a businessman living here, I would much prefer to fly from an airport like this, rather than Heathrow or Gatwick where, with all due respect, you are a widget in a big machine.” Last June, the airport launched a Fly Local campaign, hoping people would rally around and support it. Jonathan Spruce, senior assistant director for strategy and development at Tees Valley Unlimited, the area’s economic regeneration organisation, said: “It’s absolutely vital for Tees Valley’s economy that the area has its own airport.”

Speed-freak Don is simply electrifying! IT’S no wonder Don Wales is a speed freak because he is the nephew of Donald Campbell, who broke eight land and sea speed records in the Fifties and Sixties. He is also the grandson of Sir Malcolm Campbell, who set several records in the Twenties and Thirties. But neither of those legends would have attempted to achieve the heights of speed on lawn mowers or steam-powered cars, as Wales has done. All told, the Campbell family hold or held more than 20 land and sea speed records, and Wales, who has the UK record for an electric car, is confident he’ll add to the tally. The 49-year-old photographer, from Addlestone,
Surrey, is aiming even higher than just exceeding the land speed record set by Sir Malcolm. “I want to set the UK record well beyond the 150mph my grandfather clocked in 1925,” he said. “Ideally, I’d like to match his 1927 record of 175mph.” Don and the Bluebird
Electric Team set the current UK electric-car record of 139mph in August 2000 at Pendine Sands, in Wales, the venue for Sir Malcom’s record-breaking achievements in the Twenties. Project director Martin Rees said: “Don’s ambition is to be the fastest in the world, and we are all working hard to
achieve that. “His recent record-breaking exploits, and those we achieved in the electric Bluebird 10 years ago, are testament to his dedication and commitment to excellence. “Taking the car back to Pendine next Spring, with improved drive and bodywork, will be another chapter
in the Campbell and Wales story there.” The attempt is part of the Campbell family’s centenary celebrations of when Sir Malcolm first christening a car “Bluebird”, in 1911 at the Brooklands racing circuit, near the Surrey home of Wales. Eventually, Wales hopes to go even faster. He plans to
challenge the world electriccar land speed record, setting his sights on 500mph in 2012, and is currently evaluating several design options. His world attempt will take place in a Gulf state or at the Bonneville Salt Flats in the US, where there is a nine-mile course. Pendine offers only four miles, which is insufficient for such an attempt. Wales added: “At last, the world is making real progress with electric vehicles as a viable alternative to the internal combustion engine. “Ten years ago, electric vehicles were unheard of in the news, and people couldn’t understand the importance of electric car technology. Now, there is a whole new generation of electric road cars in production.” Amusingly, Wales twice broke the world speed record for a lawnmower last May, setting it at 87.833mph. It has since been overtaken, but he’ll surely be back in the saddle to reclaim it as soon as he has finished mowing the lawn! He also holds the world record for a steam-powered car (148mph) as a member of Charles Burnett III’s British Steam car team at Edwards Airforce base, California, in August 2009.
Jet-propelled Spyder is a diamond THE amazing Spyker C8 Aileron Spyder concept was unveiled in the UK recently at the MPH Prestige and Performance Motor Show at London’s Earls Court. It enabled enthusiasts at the annual celebration of speed machines to see, close up, one of the most exclusive cars in the world for the
first time. The 400hp 4.2litre V8-engined Spyker C8 Aileron Spyder concept features the exquisite, aircraftinspired signature detailing with which the Spyker brand is synonymous. From its jet engine-inspired air intakes to its exterior mirrors mounted on two turbine fan blades, and unique 10-blade 19-inch Rotorblade alloy wheels, the secondgeneration Spyker C-line sportscar is modelled on the
19 November 2010 - 25 November 2010
jet-turbine era of aviation. The C8 shares its all-aluminium space frame structure and new suspension system with the C8 Aileron coupe, while its aluminium superformed body, with minimal ‘shut’ lines, is hand-
finished by craftsmen. The interior features Spyker’s trademark, diamond-stitched, quiltedleather upholstery. The aviation theme is presented via the brushed aluminium dashboard and turbine-style air
vents. And the polished, aluminium, Chronoswiss dash toggle switches and dials complement perfectly and enhance the ultra-exclusive Spyker motoring experience. The Spyder sports a quality canvas soft-top with a glass
rear windscreen, which retracts electro-hydraulically out of sight, ensuring a clean, undisturbed profile. So, anyone fancy a quick spin along the TF1 - with the top down, natch - when it arrives in Tenerife?

THE SECOND International Mar y Sol Open 2010, featuring disabled and able-bodied players, takes place at Amarilla Golf course on 29-30th November. The tournament’s main aim is to promote golf as an ideal sport for the disabled, providing physical exercise, therapy and social integration with able-bodied players. Mar y Sol hotel, in Los Cristianos, which caters extensively for disabled guests, has organised the event, featuring a whole host of able-bodied and disabled players from Spain, England, Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Finland,
Switzerland, Austria and Holland, as well from the Czech Republic. The disabled players include Sebastian Lorente (Spanish international and current European champion, and Miroslav Lidinsky (Czech Republic international and winner of this year’s Order of Merit). Also playing will be Christian Nachtwey, the German captain who invented the special wheelchair “powergolfer”. He is a former European titleholder and the country’s multiple disabled golf champion. Other personalities are also expected, as this event has an important social interest because it is only the second Canaries event to feature disabled golfers. The first was actually held at the Amarilla
19 November 2010 - 25 November 2010
course in October 2009. And don’t think for one moment that the disabled golfers will struggle to compete with the able-bodied contingent because they, too, have officially-recognised golf handicaps. Inventor Nachtwey plays off 24.9 and is also a “T12 complete paraplegic”, yet his physical disability in no way affects his handicap. And, like all golfers, he abides by the R & A rules. The “powergolfer” is a special machine for wheelchairusers, which enables them to stand up, move around the golf course and access the greens in comfort. Most of the disabled participants were golfers before an accident - a heart attack, limb amputation, sudden blindness
or an illness such as multiple sclerosis - forced them to relearn the skill, each in his own individual way. Others discovered the joys of golf even though disabled at birth, but whatever the circumstances, they are united by their love of the game, The following companies are supporting the event: Titelist, TAG Heuer, Banco Santander, Sinpromi, Kurhotel Mar y Sol, Teralava - Centro de Terapias, Tui Vital, Condor, The Players Golf Shop, Federación Canaria de Golf, Cicar and Halcón Viajes. Advent heralds dawn of a new property era ADVENT International, the global private equity company, has completed its 100-million-euro purchase of Tinsa, a leading Spanish property valuation firm. The company, with headquarters in Boston, US, it has taken a 94.5% stake in the business, and the remaining capital is being held mainly by the management team. The transaction has been approved by the Bank of Spain. Tinsa, founded in 1985, is a leader in property valuation, analysis and real-estate advisory services. Since its inception, the company has consolidated its market position in terms of geographical scope, volume of assets appraised and specialisation. It does not broker transactions in the property market and is, therefore, in the
Page 48
advantageous position of being totally independent. Tinsa expects to have carried out over 240,000 valuation reports this year, adding up to 160 billion euros, and it predicts a turnover of 80m euros. Until now, its shareholders consisted of 35 Spanish savings banks, along with the Spanish Confederation of Savings Banks (CECA). Advent International’s strategy for Tinsa will focus on increasing its domestic market share through organic growth and complementary acquisitions, while also expanding its international geographical reach. Tinsa operates in Europe, through its offices in Portugal and France, as well as Spain. It also provides services in the US, Mexico, Argentina, Chile and Peru. Advent’s investment in Tinsa follows its long-standing strategy of investing in high-growth sectors, in which it has a solid track
record - in this case financial services - and in companies with significant growth potential, either through the growth of the industry as a whole or through the increasing market share of the company itself. Carlos Santana, Director of Advent International in Spain, said: “We have extensive investment experience in the financial services sector, and we’ve been analysing investment opportunities in Spain for some time. “We believe that Tinsa’s outstanding leadership position in the property valuation sector will enable it to continue innovating through
its products, and improving the quality of the service it offers clients.” He added: “We are looking forward to working with the management team to increase the long-term value of Tinsa.” Juan Díaz-Laviada, CEO of Advent International in Spain, said: “We are delighted to have completed this investment, which makes us majority shareholders. “We intend to help Tinsa, the clear leader of the Spanish market, to consolidate its position in Spain and complete its international expansion. “Advent International has been successfully investing
in the financial services sector for over 20 years throughout the world. During that time we have invested in more than 25 companies in a broad range of financial sub-sectors. “We will be dedicating resources and experience from across our global team to Tinsa, to accelerate the company’s growth through a buy-and-build strategy. “At Advent International, we believe that this is the most appropriate strategy for the companies in which we invest, that operate in fragmented industries.” Advent International was advised on this transaction by Ahorro Corporación (M&A Advisory), Uría y Menéndez (Legal, Corporate), Freshfields (Legal, Tax), Boston Consulting Group, AFI and JMF Consultoría Financiera (Sector Analysis), KPMG (Due Diligence, Financial and Technology) and Spencer Stuart (Management Assessment).
Advent, founded in 1984, is one of the world’s leading global buy-out firms, with offices in 17 countries on four continents, and has been a driving force in international private equity for 26 years, The company has built an unparalleled global platform of over 160 investment professionals across Western and Central Europe, North America, Latin America and Asia. The firm focuses on international buy-outs, strategic repositioning opportunities and growth buy-outs in five core sectors, working actively with management teams to drive revenue growth and earnings improvements in portfolio companies. Since inception, Advent has raised 19.4bn euros in private equity capital and, through its buy-out programmes, has completed over 250 transactions worth around 40bn euros in 35 countries.
