Fugitive arrested in Tenerife, just hours after new Crimestoppers’ list is published
JUST hours after his photograph appeared on a new list of Britain’s “Most Wanted” fugitives, Everardus Wijtvliet (bottom right) was captured by police on Monday night in Puerto de la Cruz. Someone recognised him from the photograph published on the Crimestoppers website and reported him to the Spanish National Police’s Greco Team. The 39-year-old Dutch national is wanted in the UK on
drug offences, after being arrested in 2009 on charges of organising the transportation of large quantities of cocaine and heroin. Incredibly, another listed runaway was captured by police on Wednesday morning by police in Alhuarin, near Malaga. Dean Lawrence Rice, 49, from Exeter, was convicted of conspiracy to kidnap and false imprisonment in his absence and sentenced to life imprisonment. Dozens of fugitives once enjoyed a life of luxury in Spain and the Canaries, where they sweated in the scorching sun and walked around with

impunity. Today, many of them are in prison, serving long terms, while the others are sweating for other reasons. They will be aware that officers from Operation Captura the UK crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers, together with the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) - are closing in on them. That is why some of the UK’s most dangerous criminals will be looking even more anxiously over their shoulders in the coming weeks. Dave Cording, Director of Operations at Crimestoppers, said: “This is a truly incredible result in the very early stages of the latest list being released
- and a testament to the public’s contribution to catching Britain’s most wanted criminals. “Having these individuals in the public’s gaze means they can run but they can’t hide forever because someone, somewhere, will recognise them for what they are. “The public is one of the greatest weapons in the fight against crime and again, people are helping us help track down the most-wanted individuals, who are sought in connection with some violent, sexual and highly-organised crimes.” Included on the new “Roll of Dishonour” is Anthony Fraser,
grandson of notorious, oldtime gangster“Mad” Frankie Fraser (top middle). He is wanted by the Metropolitan Police in connection with a £5m haul of cannabis discovered in Grays, Essex in March 2009. The 39-year-old is thought to have fled to Spain after a police raid uncovered the drugs in a storage unit, hidden in a lorry supposed to be carrying frozen chickens. Since the Crimestoppers campaign launched in October 2006, there have been 50 “wanted persons” appeals. Many of the 38 fugitives apprehended since then are now serving lengthy prison
sentences for their crimes, which range from drug-trafficking to sex crimes to murder. The latest appeal was revealed this week in Alicante, where there is a large British ex-pat community and is known to be a potential hideout for fugitives. Ken Gallagher, Head of European Operations for SOCA, said: “Operation Captura is helping make the ex-pat community in Spain an uncomfortable place for fugitives. “Having the public’s attention focused on these individuals goes a long way to making it harder for them to hide, and should act as a warning that Continued on page 3.
