Queen for a Year At last the moment that everybody was waiting for arrived. The election of this year’s Carnival Queen has finally taken place and the winner, chosen from 17 worthy entries, is the stunning Naomi Cabrera, wearing her spectacular costume ‘One Hundred Years of History’. Choosing the winner is no easy task, with each of the entrants sporting fantastic costumes, often weighing 150 kilos, which are moved on a set of wheels. Naomi wins a host of prizes and will spend the coming year making appearances around the Island until she hands over her crown to next year’s winner. Of the 16 remaining contestants, four Ladies-inWaiting were chosen to accompany the Queen on her special day and to follow her float during the coming Parade on Bank Holiday Tuesday, (Shrove Tuesday). The lucky ladies are Fabiana Vera, Sonia Hernández, Idaira González and fourth runner up Naomi Cordobes. The election Gala is always seen as one of the highlights of the festivities, showcasing not only the contestants for Queen but also many of the dancing and musical groups that perform throughout the more than two weeks of revelry. And this year it was an historic event, running over four hours, the longest Gala in the history of Carnival here in Tenerife. Dedicated to Enrique Gonzalez Bethencourt, a wellknown entertainer and founder of one of the best known Carnival bands, the night was a fitting tribute to the man who died in 2010 and is considered by many as one of the most dedicated Carnival performers of all time.
