It’s all systems go! Spain’s Prime Minister gives a resounding Yes to Tenerife’s new railway THE long-awaited railway linking North and South Tenerife, was finally given the green light on Wednesday by Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. His sure-fire guarantee that the estimated 1.8billioneuro project goes ahead will be heralded throughout the Island as a major coup. The Prime Minister has also pledged that he will give his whole-hearted support for the remainder of his year in office to all the other commitments in the Canary Islands, including the train project for Gran Canaria. His government will meet soon to discuss the signing of agreements for the financing of these major works. As if that weren’t enough, Zapatero also promised that his government would comply with all other commitments to the Canaries, including the tourism drive, the air rate cut, the Canary Water Law, plus employment and investment funds. So, whatever the state of the country and however hard it has been hit by the recession, life WILL go on full steam ahead in Tenerife and the other Canary Islands. And all funds already pledged by the Government will be honoured. Only last week, in an exclusive interview with Canarian Weekly, Ricardo Melchior, President of the Tenerife Cabildo, spoke enthusiastically of the rail project. He told us: “Transportation is a key area because here in Tenerife, there are more cars than people. “Tenerife is working towards a fully-integrated transport system with the

South Train, which could be a reality within approximately five years.” Crucially, he added: “It depends on the prioritisation of the project from the Spanish Government’s perspective. Each year in Santa Cruz there are 15 million tram users, and this has lowered congestion by 8-9% within four years.” Melchior will have been delighted at the Prime Minister’s prompt response, which suggests the railway

could be built a lot sooner than anticipated. The Cabildo has been working hard to promote the North-South railway, which will provide a rapid link between both airports. Earlier this year, a mobile booth travelled around the Island supplying all the answers to questions from interested residents about the “light rail” installation, which will run between Santa Cruz and Costa Adeje. The Cabildo believes that

apart from providing a vital, much-needed transport service, it will give the tourism sector an enormous boost because both Islanders and holiday-makers alike will want to experience the thrill of travelling on the new trains. Powered by 100% renewable energy, they will each hold 450 passengers and should carry up to 30,000 passengers a day between Santa Cruz and Costa Adeje. There will be seven stops

along the route, with an additional stop at the port of Fonsalia, in Guia de Isora. The stations will be located at Santa Cruz, Añaza, Candelaria, San Isidro, Tenerife South Airport, Los Cristianos and Las Americas, with services running every 15 minutes at speeds of up to 220kph. The trains will come from Reina Sofia Airport to a small stop in Las Chafiras (they are not yet sure where). There will then be a major stop in

Los Cristianos and on to the final stop in the municipality of Adeje. A vast amount of the train journey will be underground in fact, some 40 metres under the ground - tunnelling through the Guaza mountain and running under sections of both Arona and Adeje. The entire journey, from Santa Cruz to Adeje will take just 39 minutes, which will almost certainly cut down on the daily TF1 traffic, especially during the rush-hours.

A WORD FROM OUR EDITOR

Independence Day No not the film, Independence Day is commonly known as the Fourth of July, it is a holiday in the United States and takes place this coming Monday. In history it is a monumental day. It commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776, declaring independence from Great Britain. I personally remember the day as when living back in the UK adopted a dog from a dog shelter and as he was so young they were uncertain as to his birth date so I just chose 4th July as it was a memorable date. Independence Day is celebrated across the states with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, political speeches and ceremonies, and various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. History sometimes gets muddled up and apparently many historians have long disputed whether Congress actually signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, even though Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin all later wrote that they had signed it on that day. Most historians have concluded that the Declaration was signed nearly a month after its adoption, on August 2, 1776, and not on July 4 as is commonly believed. But what’s a month hey? Both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence later to serve as Presidents of the United States, coincidently died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration. American families often celebrate Independence Day by having a picnic or barbecue and take advantage of the day off and, in some years, long weekend to gather with

relatives. Independence Day fireworks are often accompanied by patriotic songs such as the national anthem “The Star-Spangled Banner”, “God Bless America”, “America the Beautiful”, “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee”, “This Land Is Your Land”, “Stars and Stripes Forever”, and, regionally, “Yankee Doodle” in northeastern states and “Dixie” in southern states. Some of the lyrics recall images of the Revolutionary War or the War of 1812. A salute of one gun for each state in the United States, called a “salute to the union,” is fired on Independence Day. The first week of July is typically one of the busiest American travel periods of the year. Numerous major and minor league baseball games are played on Independence Day. The famous Macy’s fireworks display usually held over the East River in New York City has been televised nationwide on NBC since 1976. In 2009, the fireworks display was returned to the Hudson River for the first time since 2000 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s exploration of that river. But President Obama won’t be celebrating this year, the Senate’s weeklong July 4th break, insisting that politicians need to work to avoid a first-ever default on the federal government’s debt. The announcement comes just a day after President Obama blasted lawmakers during a press conference, urging them to “cancel things and stay here” if there isn’t progress by the end of the week on a floundering deal to raise the nation’s debt limit. “You need to be here,” Obama said. “I’ve been here.”

Speed limit is restored after just four months THE top speed limit on the mainland and in the Canaries will revert to 120km/h today (Friday) following the Spanish Government’s decision not to extend the 110km/h reduction. The authorities say the temporary limit, brought in on 7th March, served its purpose, with energy savings of 450 million euros. But the highways department will have to take down all the new signs. They were initially installed at a cost of 30,000 euros, throughout Tenerife and will need to be replaced with the old ones, unless the economyconscious Government spend a fortune on another new set! Which they have to do as the

four months later, to change the signage back. Director of Island Highways, Ophelia Manjón, confirmed that the signs will be changed in anticipation of the 1st July, similar to that performed in

March, when it adopted the limit of 110. In total 182 new stickers will go up covering the 110 speed limit. The activity will take place over night to limit disruption to traffic.

El Medano – Sport central

The heart of El Medano will become on Saturday July 2nd a crowded area of outdoor recreation. From 10.00 am begins the Third Exhibition of Tourism and Sport, an initiative that was presented by the Councillor for Tourism, Nuria Hernandez Delgado, and the Councillor for Sports, Marcos Gonzalez Alonso.

Page 04

old signs were damaged when removed. The further change has now forced the Cabildo de Tenerife to spend a further 30,000 euros more than expected this year on the island roads, just

Nuria Delgado explained that El Medano will become a showcase of tourism and sports for 13 hours in length, and which will offer residents and visitors in general more than two dozen activities. The initiative, organized by the Municipality, through the Department of Tourism and Sports, “seeks to highlight the tourist attractions and the wide range of sports can be practiced on the coast and generate economic

activity in the area, “ said the councillor. Meanwhile, Marcos González, said that anyone can attend from 10.00 am to 23.00 pm, soccer to badminton on the beach, spinning, aerobics, step, climbing walls, beach volleyball, fishing, basketball, football, club, diving, arm wrestling, canoeing, windsurfing, surfing, kitesurfing, aerobics, karate and aikido, full contact, boxing, skateboarding, Canarian

wrestling, hiking and gymnastics, among others. He said Saturday’s event will show you do not have to go out of town for leisure and you can spend free time in a healthy way. Municipal officials stressed that El Medano this summer will become a landmark for sport, prominent in this regard by holding two global events, the World Windsurfing (in July) and the World Kite (August).

TAX OBLIGATIONS FOR NON FISCAL RESIDENTS IN SPAIN CONFUSION in this area arises mainly when ex pats come to sell property or make any transactions involving Spanish property such as requesting capital gains tax rebates after a sale. It is a common misconception that ex pats who own property in Spain do not have to make any tax declarations in Spain - De Cotta McKenna y Santafe have prepared an easy to understand article detailing the tax obligations for non fiscal residents. Conditions to obtain the fiscal residence in Spain: The Spanish legislation specifies that to obtain fiscal residency the person must comply any of the following conditions: To spend more than 183 days during the natural year in Spain – these can be alternate periods. That their main economical activity or interests are situated in Spain. That their partner (not legally separated) and minor children have habitual residency in Spain. TAXES FOR NON FISCAL RESIDENTS IN SPAIN: Non fiscal residents in Spain pay taxes on any single income that they obtain in Spain individually and without being possible to compensate different incomes between them. The general tax rate for non residents is 24%, although some specific incomes are taxed at a minor rate, such as capital gains obtained from the transmission of a property, taxed at 19%, and the interests and shares, also taxed at 19%. We must also mention that non residents in Spain that own property in Spain have to file yearly – by the end of every year subsequent to the year of the purchase - a tax return based on the rental income that the property would generate even if this is not actually rented. This is calculated in the following way: the value of the supposed rental for the calculation of the tax is obtained applying a percentage of 2% or 1.1% on the catastral value of the property (1.1% applies when the catastral value of the property has been revised posterior to 1993); the amount of the tax to be paid is calculated applying 24% to this sum.

The formal obligation of the non resident tax payers is the presentation of a model 210 for each income that they obtain in Spain. In respect of the incomes obtained from the rental of property, the tax rate applicable is the general 24%. In this case there are two possible situations: The property is rented to a company. In this case the company has the obligation to retain 24% of the rental to be paid to the non resident owner and pay it to the Tax Office presenting the relevant quarterly (model 216) and yearly (model 296) declarations. In this case there 2 options: If the property is rented during all the year the non resident owner does not have to present any tax returns to the Tax Office. In this case it is important to request to the tenant company a certificate for the retentions that have been applied and paid to justify that the non resident owner does not have to declare this income. This is important as for example when it comes to selling a property the non resident owner must justify the tax declarations of the last 4 years and without this certificate the non resident owner would not be able to demonstrate the relevant tax has been paid. If the property is rented just during short terms during the year, the non resident owner will also have to present the yearly tax return (model 210) in respect of the rest of the year that the property has not been actually rented. The property is rented to a physical person. In this case the tenant does not have to apply any retentions and the non resident owner has to present quarterly tax returns (model 210) declaring the rentals and paying the 24% to the Tax Office. If the property is rented just during short terms during the year, the non resident owner will also have to present the yearly tax return (model 210) in respect of the rest of the year that the property has not been actually rented. BENEFITS APPLICABLE TO

01 July 2011 - 07 July 2011

CANARY ISLANDS RESIDENTS Being (fiscally) residents in the Canary Islands entails some advantages such as the applicability of big tax allowances and other benefits such as discounts on flights tickets, ferries, etc. In respect of inheritance taxes for example, if the deceased is resident in the Canary Islands and passed away on or after the 01/01/2008, a parent, spouse, “pareja de hecho” or child also resident habitually in Spain will receive a discount of 99.9% to the applicable inheritance tax, which makes a big difference as inheritance taxes for non residents are very high. The autonomous region of the Canary Islands has practically abolished inheritance tax within its resident families for their advantage, however this appears to be discriminatory in that residents of other EU states do not qualify and might be challenged in the European Court of Justice. ****STOP PRESS**** According to the Real Decreto 557/2011 of 20/04/2011 it is no longer possible to request NIE numbers using a Power Of Attorney after the 29/06/2011. All applications will need to be made in person at the local Police Station or Extranjería, or through a Spanish Consulate out of Spain. If you are obliged to present non resident tax returns or need legal advice on any other matters please contact our expert team on 922 719 520. The project’s goal is to provide inhabitants with all the energy they need through a combination of wind energy, pumped water-storage power and solar-thermal and photovoltaic systems. El Hierro currently generates much of the electricity it needs with diesel fuel shipped in by oil tankers. That power source generates some 18,200 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

THE SUMMER sales begin officially this Friday in most regions of Spain, with massive discounts of up to 70 percent with an estimated average spend of 50 euros per person, according to research. This amount is lowest since the advent of the euro. While in the Canary Islands individuals will spend the least with

just 42 euros on average. According to a study by the Consumer Federation of Independent Members, (FUCI), conducted through a survey of 1,500 people, spending just 50 euros is a drop of 23% over the last year. The summer spending spree has fallen 61.5% since 2006, when it used to be 130 euros per person. Thus, average spending has been gradually receding, to 115 euros in 2007, 95 euros in 2008, 90 euros in 2009 and 65 euros last year.

Madrid, Basque Country and Catalonia are the regions where the most items are purchased in the summer sales, with 60 euros, 58 euros and 57 euros, respectively, of average expenditure. While Murcia (40 euros), Extremadura (40 euros) and the Canary Islands (42 euros) will spend the least during the two month campaign. Clothing and accessories remain the most sought by consumers in the sales season, with furniture and technology items close followers.

Superstores expect this year a “good” summer sales campaign with increases in turnover between 3% and 5%, according to the National Association of Large Distribution Companies (ANGED), which includes groups such as El Corte Inglés, Ikea, Cortefiel, C & A, Carrefour, Auchan and Leroy Merlin, among others. It’s estimated that over seven million customers will go to the shops of these companies during the first weekend of the campaign.

Light up those mountain BBQs again after fire ban THE Cabildo has lifted the ban on lighting fires in the mountains

following the end of the recent heatwave.

Barbecue grills in the recreational areas of the Forest Ring, Anaga and Teno can again be utilised by visi-

tors. But the Cabildo urges tourists and residents to take extra precautions when visiting these mountain places. Intensive sports activities should be restricted, and people must drink plenty of water. Agricultural burning may also take place, with authorisation from the

Government’s Department of the Environment. The Cabildo has safety restrictions in place to prevent forest fires and wild fires, and stresses that visitors must take precautions and act responsibly. In addition, the public are asked to use paved roads

and avoid, as far as possible, driving on forest tracks when it is extremely hot. The ban on activities in the mountains was sparked by the heatwave, which peaked last Thursday. There is also a reminder from the Cabildo that the number to call in an emergency is 112.

Rise and fall of Spanish water THE price of water in Spain is rising, but the amount consumed in households is going down, according to this week’s figures by the National Institute of Statistics. The daily average for 2009 consumed per person was 149 litres, which was 3.2% less than the previous year. But the price went up by 8.4% to 1.42 euros for every cubic metre, compared with 1.31 euros in 2008. The report details water consumption and the environmental impact of water sourcing, water purification and supply. According to the report,

Page 08

areas with the highest average water consumption are Cantabria (180 litres per person per day), the Valencian community (174) and Murcia (166). The lowest rates of consumption can be found in the Basque Country, the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, and La Rioja (which pays the least, at 90 cents). Householders in the Balearic Islands, among those in the lower-rate group, also seem a little thrifty because they actually pay the most for theirs, at two euros per cubic metre. Canary Islanders are next dearest, at just 10 cents less.

HUSBAND-and-wife stars Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz are among the first Spanish film celebrities to be on Madrid’s Hollywood-style Walk of Fame. They husband were in the 25-strong group who

received a star plaque on the city’s Street Of Stars (La Calle De Las Estrellas). Antonio Banderas and director Pedro Almodovar were also at Monday’s inauguration ceremony to mark the Spanish Film Academy’s 25th anniversary. Director Alejandro Amenabar thanked the academy and the City Council for

installing the new attraction in Calle Martín de los Heros, the central Madrid street which houses several cinemas. He added: “This area brings me great memories - I signed my first autograph here.” Just like its Hollywood counterpart, the plaque is made of granite, marble and steel, featuring a large star

and the celebrity’s name. The Academy has honoured 16 actors and nine directors to start with, and it plans to add “one or two more plaques” each year. It is second 2011 accolade for Cruz because she received the 2,436th star in Hollywood in April - the first Spanish actress be given such recognition.

They were cruising along the coast aboard the Zuleik and decided to enter the bay near Punta de las Gaviotas, not far from La Caleta, which is known as Spaghetti Bay. It is a well-known anchorage for yachts and is visited many times a day by local tourist vessels. The bay is also home to hippies, who live in caves or tents there.

The husband skippered his yacht too close to the beach and, unaware of the rock ledge between the two beach areas, went aground. It was quickly caught by a large swell and foundered. He and his wife were safe, but Zuleik went on to her side and was holed by a rock which penetrated the hull. Within minutes, the hull was full of water. The emergency services were called and the Salvemar Maritimo Lifeboat and a National Police helicopter attended the scene. John Williams, Principal of the local Sea School Club Sail, was asked to gather information for the boat’s manager

on La Gomera. He witnessed numerous failed attempts by the lifeboat to pull the yacht from the ledge as the tow rope parted with a thunderous crack each time. By sunset, the mast of the stricken vessel had broken and it became clear that there was no hope of saving her. Club Sail Sea School were asked to assist in the recovery of the boat’s valuable gear and equipment to lessen the insurance burden. They provided their powerful Rigid Inflatable Boat Mousi B, crewed by Chief Instructor David Libby, and head of maintenance Tony Barton.

But because of the large, dangerous swell, it wasn’t until the following Monday that anything could be recovered, including fuel from the yacht to avoid polluting the beach. Unfortunately, John has seen many yachts founder on that ledge over the 22 years he has run the school here, and maritime laws in the Canaries are much stricter these days. It means the wreck will have to be got rid of ashore, rather than being taken out to sea and sunk, and John said: “The bay is accessible by foot or by boat only, which will make the disposal of the wreckage difficult.”

Jellyfish influx closes down nuclear reactors REACTORS at the Torness nuclear power station have been shut down by jellyfish. A large influx of the creatures from the North Sea clogged filters in the watercooling system. The plant, near Dunbar, East Lothian, uses seawater to cool the reactors. The jellyfish were “sucked in” as part of that process and obstructed the filters which are used to prevent debris and sea creatures entering the system. The operators of Torness say the reactors have been

shut down as a precaution and stress there is no danger to the public. A spokesperson for EDF Energy said: “At no time was there any danger to the public. “There are no radiological aspects with this event and there has been no impact to the environment.” Workers at the plant are now clearing the jellyfish from the cooling filters before the reactors are restarted. It is unclear why there has been a sudden surge in the numbers of jellyfish in the sea off Scotland’s east coast, but it is thought a rise in North Sea temperatures could be a factor.

French gorilla lives with zoo manager A GORILLA in France is living with a zoo manager and his wife in their home. Digit, a 13-year-old female, spends her days in an enclosure with other animals at a zoo near Lyon. But at night, she goes to stay with Pierre Thivillon and his wife Elianne who consider her one of the family. Digit, who weighs 120kg, even sleeps on the couple’s

bed. The arrangement started when Digit’s mother refused to breast feed her and has stuck. Mr Thivillon says: “It’s going very well, because we have a 13-year-old relationship with Digit so obviously we have created a very strong bond with each other.” Initially, Digit’s brother also lived with the couple but that ended when he became too aggressive. The couple, who have never

had children, are happy to forego nights out in order to care for their unusual pet. Even the zoo’s vet JeanChristophe Gerard is surprised at the close bond that has

developed between the gorilla and her adoptive parents. “It’s an animal. It can have reactions. It can react violently to things it doesn’t like,” Mr Gerard said. “It’s a female that was never aggressive with Pierre or Elianne so there has never been any behaviour or other concerns. “They respect her, they have established a relationship with her, which is stable for the moment.”

Lohan released from house arrest LINDSAY LOHAN has been released from house arrest after spending 35 days detained at her Los Angeles apartment for stealing a gold necklace. The 24-year-old Mean Girls actress was sentenced in May to 120 days in prison, but was later offered a shorter period of house arrest. She qualified for this under

Page 12

a programme for non-violent offenders, which is aimed at reducing overcrowding in jails in the Los Angeles area. Lohan pleaded “no contest” in May - which means a defendant neither admits or disputes a charge and pleads neither “guilty” or “not guilty”, but accepts a punishment given by the court. She was accused of taking the £1,550 necklace from a boutique near her home in the Venice Beach area of LA. She had walked out of the

store wearing the jewellery. Her once promising Hollywood career has derailed because of repeated run-ins with the law and trips to rehabilitation to deal with drug and alcohol problems. She had been due to play porn star turned women’s rights campaigner Linda Lovelace in the film Inferno. Critics thought that would have been her perfect comeback, but she lost the role when a period in rehab clashed with filming.

Nevertheless, Lohan is due to start working on a movie about New York crime boss John Gotti later this year which co-stars John Travolta and Al Pacino. And she has been offered the role of Sharon Tate in Eyes Of A Dream - an upcoming movie about 1960s serial killer Charles Manson. Tate, the actress wife of Roman Polanski, was eight months pregnant when she was murdered by Manson’s followers.

Canada prepares a warm welcome for Royal couple THE DUKE and Duchess of Cambridge touch down in Canada today (Thursday) for their first joint overseas tour. The newlyweds arrive in the capital Ottawa at the start of a 12-day visit to North America, which will also see them visit the USA. Final preparations are being made on the city’s Parliament Hill ahead of the July 1 Canada Day celebrations, at which the couple will be the special guests. William and Kate will arrive on board a Royal Canadian Air Force jet before undertaking their first engagement at the National War Memorial. The Duke of Cambridge will lay a wreath in memory of Canadian servicemen and women who have died in battle. Canada’s future King will also make his first speech to the country’s public on Friday from the stage on Parliament Hill. “Last year on the same day the crowds that came out for the Queen were extraordinary”, said Canada’s minister for citizenship and immigration, Jason Kenney. “So that’s why, especially given the excitement around the Royal Wedding and the newness of this lovely couple, we expect to see a very significant turnout this year,” he added. An unprecedented 1,400 journalists have been accredited for the Canadian leg of the tour, which sees the cou-

ple travel to areas such as Quebec where the monarchy is less popular. Around 300 protesters from the Quebec Resistance Network, a hard line separatist group, plan to make the Duke and Duchess’ welcome to the province as uncomfortable as possible. The same demonstrators clashed with riot police in 2009 during a visit by the Prince of Wales. But they are actions seemingly at odds with a poll expected later today showing Canada’s renewed love affair with the Royal Family. “William and Kate are unveiling this new 21st century monarchy which is more accessible, more connected to the people and I think that appeals to the younger generation,” Matthew Rowe from the Monarchist League of Canada commneted. CBC TV correspondent Reg Sherren added: “What you have is this mega popular couple - the most popular couple in the world at the moment. “So is what we’re seeing actually celebrity interest or renewed interest in the monarchy? That the real question,” he added. Much has changed since the teenage prince last visited Canada in 1998 alongside his father the Prince of Wales and brother Prince Harry. Canada’s future King now comes with a future Queen the Commonwealth country is not hiding its excitement at being the first to showcase their new marriage.

Greek backlash

THE BACKLASH against Greek austerity measures is expected to continue, as MPs in Athens vote on law reforms to activate the deal on spending cuts and tax rises. Politicians narrowly approved a set of debtreduction measures, while protests raged outside the country’s parliament on Wednesday. Masked protesters took to the streets, hurling rocks and smoke bombs at police and setting fire to buildings. Some demonstrators sprayed fire extinguishers at police, who responded by throwing rocks. The latest vote is expected to approve changes in the law which would allow the implementation of cuts designed

to save £25bn by 2015. Although the country’s 48hour strike has officially ended, the violence of the protests and their crippling effect has sparked fears of a widespread public defiance. The vote for austerity has been welcomed in Brussels as the only option for a Greek economy still on the slide. Greece needs nearly £4bn of the latest bailout instalment by July 15 to pay its most pressing debts. If the changes to the law go through, eurozone finance ministers are likely to clear the latest bailout payment at talks in Brussels on Sunday. Another meeting on July 11 will then consider giving Greece a second bailout worth more than £100bn later this year. Rocks, fireworks, pieces of masonry and petrol bombs were thrown by a “sizeable minority” of protesters in Syntagma Square, outside

parliament. They were being countered by volleys of tear gas and stun grenades fired by police. Now the Greek government has to deliver on its promises to make 28bn euros of savings and raise 50bn euros from the sale of state owned assets. Tens of thousands of Greeks had taken to the streets since early on Tuesday, as a mark of protest against what they see as unreasonable demands from the EU and IMF. If the politicians had not approved the plan, Greece would have been pushed to the brink of defaulting on its debts. But even though the government has won backing for its plan, the nation’s problems are far from over. Although it can now receive the next instalment of its EU/IMF bailout, Greece still has crippling public sector

debts worth 150% of its GDP. The austerity measures, which include public sector wages cuts and increased taxes, may help limit further borrowing - but also risk strangling economic growth. The new austerity package voted through yesterday was hailed as a “vote of national responsibility” by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and European Council President Herman Van Rompuy. In a joint statement they said: “With approval by the Greek parliament of the revised economic programme, the country has taken an important step forward along the necessary path of fiscal consolidation and growth-enhancing structural reform. But it has also taken a vital step back from the very grave scenario of default.”

Thousands take part in strikes THERE is widespread disruption across the country yesterday (Thursday) as tens of thousands of public sector workers take industrial action over reforms to their pensions. Airports, jobcentres, courts, libraries, museums and tax offices face varying degrees of disruption with 750,000 public sector workers expected to join the strikes. But schools will bear the brunt of the action. The National Union of

Page 14

Teachers said up to 80% of schools in England and Wales will be affected. The Department for Education said its early figures indicated 26% of schools are closed, 22% are partially closed and 23% are fully open. However, it added it was still waiting for information from some schools. Leave for all Met Police officers has been cancelled, with thousands of people due to take part in rallys in London. The UK Border Agency has warned passengers travelling into Britain may face long delays at ports and airports as passport officers

join the strike. Heathrow Airport and the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) said 70% of border

staff at the airport have gone on strike. Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said the Government was “not seeking to be at loggerheads with the unions”. “I think it’s a real shame there are strikes because there are talks ongoing between the Government and the trade unions,” he said. “We all agree across the political spectrum that public sector pensions need to be reformed. “We want to do that in a resonable way - but that reform does need to happen.” Both Prime Minister David

Cameron and Labour leader Ed Miliband have also criticised the mass walkout. Mr Miliband said the strikes were “wrong” but again accused the Government of “reckless” behaviour. The British Chambers of Commerce said the 24-hour stoppage will result in tens of thousands of parents having to take a day off work to look after their children. Director general David Frost said: “Many of those private sector employees affected by these strikes envy the better working terms and conditions enjoyed by those in the public sector.”

This action will have a wider impact on the economy as businesses lose productivity - something the economy simply can not afford. Mike Cherry, policy chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses, said that small firms were worried about the impact. “The recovery remains in a fragile state and this action will have a wider impact on the economy as businesses lose productivity - something the economy simply can not afford.” But unions have hit back insisting that public sector workers are facing an unprecedented attack on pensions in particular.

007 weds his leading lady in secret service

BRITISH stars Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz have tied the knot, according to his publicist. Robin Baun revealed the Hollywood stars had got married, but refused to offer any more details. The James Bond star and Oscar-winning actress reportedly tied the knot last Wednesday in a secret ceremony in New York. Only the Bond star’s teenage daughter Ella, Weisz’s five-year-old son Henry and two family friends attended. The pair were rumoured to have started a romance on the set of upcoming movie Dream House - but kept it under the radar.

Craig, 43, rose to international stardom in 2006 when he became the sixth actor to play James Bond in the movie franchise. He will take on the role of the suave secret agent for the third time in the 23rd movie, which will be released in October next year. His other film credits include Elizabeth, Layer Cake and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, which is due to be released at the end of the year. Weisz, 41, has appeared in movies including The Mummy and About A Boy. Her role in 2005 film The Constant Gardener earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. The actress’s son is from a previous relationship with Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky.

'Little Britain' benefit cheat sent to prison A benefits cheat who pretended to need a wheelchair in a manner likened to a sketch from hit comedy show Little Britain has been jailed. Peter Dixon, 48, was handed a four-week custodial sentence, of which he will serve half, after he was filmed walking around despite claiming he needed to use a wheelchair. Preston Crown Court was shown footage of Dixon being wheeled out of a medical centre and carefully helped into the driver's seat of a car. It was contrasted with secret films showing him standing outside a pub having a cigarette and walking down a high street after visiting a cashpoint. Prosecutor Kevin Slack likened Dixon's double life to the popular series starring Matt Lucas and David Walliams, saying the film showed "a scene that could have happened in the comedy show Little Britain". In the sketch, wheelchairbound Andy Pipkin is doted on by his caring friend, but when

Page 16

his back is turned, the apparently disabled character gets up from his chair and takes part in a variety of activities. On one occasion, officers secretly filmed the couple for most of the day, following them as they went to various locations, during which Dixon walked freely and unaided. However, for his doctor's appointment later the same day Dixon was pushed in a wheelchair by his partner, before continuing with his errands, walking without any trouble. The court was told that Dixon defrauded £7,600 in Disability Living Allowance. He had previously suffered a stroke which left him in a wheelchair, but failed to notify the authorities of an improvement in his condition. Sentencing Dixon, Judge Gibson said: "You were plainly pretending to be suffering from severe symptoms. "You were calculating and you showed serious disregard to the public who funded your dishonest claims."

Lloyds Bank will axe further 15,000 jobs LLOYDS has announced plans to cut another 15,000 jobs as part of a review aimed at saving £1.5bn a year. As exclusively revealed by Sky News, the jobs will go over the next three years. The latest announcement means a total of 43,000 jobs will have gone at the 41% state-owned bank since its merger with HBOS in January 2009. The savings will come from fewer management posts, centralising some functions and withdrawing from more than 15 of its overseas units, the bank said in a statement. The majority of job losses are expected in the UK, with 90% of the banking group’s operations based here. The bank will also look to attract more wealthy customers in Britain by expanding its wealth business. Lloyds Banking Group has 3,000 branches, 22 million current accounts and 27% of gross mortgage lending. It has 30 million customers and is the nation’s biggest mortgage lender. The strategic review was launched by the bank’s new chief executive, Antonio Horta-Osorio, who left Santander UK to run Lloyds on March 1.

He said the bank will become a “simpler, more agile and responsive organisation”. But he added: “We have to do this. This bank has lost money, it’s losing money this year on an after-tax basis. “We have to get this bank back on to its feet to support the UK economy and we have to pay taxpayers’ money back.” Around 28,000 jobs have already been lost since the group was formed when Lloyds TSB and HBOS merged early in 2009, so the new cuts will be a further blow to

staff. Earlier this month, Lloyds began the sale of 632 of its branches and a large part of its mortgage operations after being ordered to offload them by the European Commission. The Unite union said the results of the review would cause “deep distress and anxiety” across the company. “Astonishingly one in eight roles will be lost over the next three years,” national officer David Fleming said. “This review is merely another box-ticking exercise to give this bank, which has

already, since its creation two years ago cut over 27,000 staff, an excuse to sack more employees. “The conclusion of this review to make 15,000 staff cuts is yet another extreme example of the financial services industry cutting vital staff in a desperate attempt to create a mirage of acceptability following the financial crisis. “But this total failure to take significant action to make appropriate changes to rebuild the public confidence in the sector is deplorable.”

Turtles block JFK runway FLIGHTS have been held up at John F Kennedy International Airport in New York by a procession of turtles crossing the runway. Several pilots began reporting diamondback terrapins on Runway 4L just as the morning rush hour was beginning at JFK, according to a radio recording posted on LiveATC.net. “Be advised 30ft into the takeoff roll, left side of the centre line, there’s another turtle,” called the pilot of American Airlines Flight 1009. Spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey “There’s another one on the runway?” asked the controller. “Uh, well he was there,” the pilot said as the big airliner climbed into the air. American 663, a Boeing 737

headed to Fort Lauderdale, found its way to runway 4L blocked by three of the roving reptiles. Airport staff helped clear the creatures, giving them a ride via pickup truck to their

beaches. The turtles were trying to get to an ideal location to lay their eggs and chose to cross Runway 4 as JFK is surrounded by a bay and wetland areas Flights were delayed for

around 30 minutes, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. “We are trying to help wildlife out a bit here,” said Ron Marsico, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. “We built on the area where they were nesting for generations, so we feel incumbent to help them along the way.” People began tweeting about the turtles soon after the news broke. Within eight hours, @JFKTurtles had almost 3,000 followers on Twitter, even from airline accounts like Jet Blue who said: “Oh @JFKTurtles, we could never stay mad at you... “Glad you made it to your honeymoon spot safe.” It is not the first time turtles have invaded the runways at JFK. Seventy-eight turtles emerged one day in 2009, according to Mr Marsico.

Aktiontier to the rescue after Town Hall say No to dog who lost his way A SPANISH trader, whose shop is by the Hiperdino supermarket in Las Chafiras, found an old dog collapsed from heat exhaustion outside. She followed the correct procedure and called San Miguel on the 112 number, only to be told that the Town Hall there no longer made provisions for abandoned, dumped, stray or, in this case, lost dogs. Officials feel there is no longer a need for this service and said they couldn’t help. The lady was so concerned about the poor dog that she phoned Accion del Sol for advice. It is not Accion del Sol’s policy to take in dogs except by the proper and legal system. But Marion Fernandez, who runs the Granadilla-based refuge, felt she had to do something. She went immediately to Las Chafiras, collected the animal and took it straight back to the refuge, so their vet could treat it. The dog was fairly old and was suffering from the heat and dehydration exhaustion. It was micro-chipped and Marion tried to call the owner, only to discover the phone number was obsolete. Marion then contacted the vet who had micro-chipped the dog and had a stroke of luck. The particular vet was still looking after the dog, so she was able to give Marion the owner’s new number. And Katie Clark was so happy collect her dog, which made for a happy ending all round to what could have been a sorry tale.

Relieved owner Katie Clark is reunited with her elderly pet

Accion del Sol, sponsored by German charity Aktiontier, cannot stress enough the importance of micro-chipping your dog contact http://www.zoochip.com/Ap plications.htm - and make sure you inform them if you change your phone number or address, as this case clearly demonstrates. But what a terrible state of affairs for strays on the streets of San Miguel, and Marion says: “It’s a step back in time, and definitely a step in the wrong direction for animal welfare here in Tenerife.” The shopkeeper is so angry with San Miguel Town Hall that she intends to tell staff their decision is totally unjustified - and that Spanish Law decrees that provisions must be made for stray and abandoned dogs.

Incidentally, a large number of animals have been rehomed here and in Germany, but there are still lots of gorgeous dogs at the Granadilla sanctuary looking for new homes.. One of these good-lookers, Gizmo (pictured), was snapped up within three days of being taken off the streets of Granadilla by Proteccion Civil and delivered to Accion del Sol. After a trial period with his new family, they decided to adopt him permanently. “Luckily, I was on my best behaviour,” admits happy Gizmo, who had been dumped by his previous owner and had spent a miserable time looking for food and water. Please visit Accion del Sol if you are looking to adopt a dog. The refuge is open Monday-Friday (3-6pm) and it is situated at junction 51 on the TF1, right next to the ecological wind farm ITER, at Granadilla Poligono Industrial Estate. Remember, every animal brought there by the various Town Hall dog-catchers in the South - sadly, NOT San Miguel - receives full veterinary care, is bathed, deflead, wormed, inoculated, microchipped, passported and sterilised or castrated, all ready for its new home. Tomorrow (Saturday) is Fun Race day at Accion del Sol, so bring along your own pet, or borrow one from the refuge because there are lots who would love to strut their

stuff. It’s only five euros to enter and there are lots of prizes to be won. It promises to be an action-packed day with a Foam Party for children (remember to bring your cossies), crazy minigolf, kiddies’ workshops and a puppet show. There will be lots of games as well as entertainment, food and plenty more, and it all starts at 10.30am. It will certainly be a busy one for the runners because Marion has already received more than 100 entries. Age groups and distances Children born before 2000: 600m Infants (1996-1999): 1,000m Adults (1976-1995): 2,500m Veterans (before 1975): 2,500m Visitors and competitors will be able to view the kennels and see this first-class facility, where dogs are given five-star treatment and every effort is made to find them new homes. More and more English people are supporting the charity, which is great for animal welfare here in South Tenerife. If you think you could help out in any way, maybe by dog-walking or donating blankets, towels or toys for the dogs, then please get in touch. New Tenerife Sur Lions President gets off to a flier THERE was a full house for Tenerife Sur Lions’ annual President’s Dinner, at the Strelitzia Restaurant in Hotel Paradise Park, Los Cristianos. Guests were served Cava and canapés on the terrace on arrival, followed in the restaurant by a delicious fivecourse meal consisting of assorted appetisers, French onion soup, salmon delights, beef tenderloin and finally, a dessert of oranges in kirsch liquor. Outgoing President Norman Goodall MBE, who welcomed around 80 members and guests, thanked the Lions for all their hard work during the year, and the public and local businesses for their continued support. Despite membership being down on its heyday, Tenerife Sur Lions were now ranked as one of the highest in the Spain district in terms of cash generated and distributed to worthy causes. He went on to say that while the children’s holidays continued to be the Lions flagship event, of the Lions helped many other causes in terms of donations and practical support. Other key projects during the year had included the collection of spectacles for Third World countries, the introduction of bio-degradable bags at the two shops, and a positive, financial response to national and international appeals. Locally, the Lions had been instrumental in assisting those in need in a variety of ways, many through the Lions’ helpline, and some in conjunction with local author-

ities and the British Consulate. Incoming President Phil Glock thanked members for their continued support. He said that during his year in office, he would do his utmost to continue the club’s good work. That meant not only with the children’s holidays but also by aiding and assisting as many needy situations and projects within the local community as possible. Later in the evening, there was a huge surprise for Edna Goodall when her husband presented her with a much deserved “Lion of the Year” award. Entertainment during the evening was provided by some of Viana Shows’ finest. The first act was Ian Anderson, Tenerife´s Got Talent finalist in 2008 and 2009, who sang music from the shows and a touch of opera. Guests were then Taken to the Limit with a fantastic Eagles tribute group. Finally, there was a magical mystery tour from the Beatles tribute band. A group of 30 young people and their carers are about to set off to England for an eight-day stay at the Haven Holidays Park in Caister, Great Yarmouth, courtesy of Tenerife Sur Lions. The venue is a lively, fourstar, all-action park, with a brand-new pool development, and entertainment show bars. There are lots of fabulous places to visit, beautiful beaches, landscapes, historical sites and adventure parks. The holiday, organised in conjunction with Lions’ groups in the UK, is made possible only through the generous support the Lions receive here in Tenerife.

JOE ‘IN MY OPINION’ FERGUSON Weekly Update Email: joe.ferguson@canarianweekly.com

Summertime Blues IT’S that time again when Tenerife experiences its busiest months. Fingers crossed, it will be a lot better than the last few years. I have a feeling it will all pick up. So, as the holiday-makers flood in and visit this beautiful, sunshine island, let’s set down the ground rules for what will be a lovely time. All-inclusive: You can’t beat this, and it’s exactly what it says on the tin. You are in a hotel or complex and when you arrive, you and the whole family get your coloured wristband for the duration of your stay. This means that from that moment, you will want for nothing. Breakfast? It’s yours. Lunch? It’s yours, Fancy all the drinks you can pour down your throat? It’s yours. In fact, it’s like Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory because anything you want, as long as you have the wristband, is yours. It’s all inclusive and loved by millions every year. But there are two things you need to bear in mind over this deal. The dream stops as soon as you set foot outside the door of wherever you are staying. I have seen this quite a few times: a family sit down for lunch and, after eating, they make their way to the exit without paying. For some reason they are under the impression that the wristband deal applies to the whole island! It is very embarrassing for all those concerned, but very

Page 34

funny for me to watch. In pubs, drinks have been ordered and a row has broken out with landlords trying to explain the situation, while a family of five have their wrists in his face, not understanding the concept. The last rule for all-inclusive is to make sure the wristband is not too tight because you will have the white ring (where the sun hasn’t shone) for some considerable time. Older couples: I love to see the two from the older generation walking hand in hand along the many strips on the coast. It’s a beautiful thing as the sun goes down and they gaze at the wonderful sight. All their troubles back home are forgotten and they hold hands. But here is the rule. Shave your back! Seriously, we have all seen it as the male gets closer to your view and, with a mixture of suntan oil and sweat, the shoulders seem to take on a life of their own. You can’t not gaze at this. And, as they walk on by with the sea breeze getting in between each individual hair, you have the feeling that you’ve seen this before - on a wildlife show with David Attenborough! Young couples: We all enjoy the passion of new-found love, and relationships at this early stage are wonderful. It’s their first holiday together and all they do is kiss and drink, and drink, and drink and drink. Here’s the rule. Quit while you are ahead! The love turns sour as you knock back that fourth shot. The shots are seriously cheap here and, no matter where, you can get anything you want in that little glass. It

takes a master like me and the others who have lived here for a while. But after the second one in the young couple’s hands, it’s a disaster waiting to happen. The speech goes from ABC to ASBO. The young lad wants another and the young lady wants to keep up with him. He gets moody and they both stumble home, not holding hands, and end up with the police being called by hotel security because of the row they are having. And second rule concerns the young lady. Do not wear heel higher than an inch because, believe me, you will end up falling at least five times before you walk home with them in your hand. Last and very important, parents of small children: They will have a great holiday as long as they are shown respect and what responsibility is. By this, I mean DON’T leave them with me. Churchills Bar in Cristianos is my night-time work. The parents wheel in the kids, which is fine, but the kids can’t help themselves but want to sing. And I'm all for it. But at least listen to them as they sing to you. I was even thinking of opening a children’s nursery in the bar at one time. The parents sit in the bar to all hours, letting the kids run around, and they expect me to look after them. That does not happen now because I just snarl at them. All in all folks I welcome you to Tenerife and know you will have a lovely time for the duration of your stay. Just obey the rules at all times. Joe

Jane Norman Essential rescue package is latest high to stock in the cupboard street casualty

FASHION CHAIN Jane Norman has closed its 90 stores and gone into administration, with debts of £140m. Accountancy firm Zolfo Cooper is now seeking a buyer for the company, which was founded in 1952 and employs 1,600 people. The retailer is the latest victim of tough conditions on the high street, following a week that saw the collapse of Moben kitchens owner Homeform and Habitat stores outside London. Other chains including Mothercare, Comet and HMV are closing stores. Official figures showed retail sales fell by 1.4% in value and volume last month, with analysts blaming a squeeze on take-home pay

Page 38

and job uncertainty for the decline. Meanwhile, Jane Norman’s core customers - aged between 16 and 25 are a group that has experienced record high rates of unemployment in recent years. To add to difficulties, the soaring price of cotton has forced many clothes retailers to put up prices or see margins shrink. In addition to its standalone shops, Jane Norman also has around 100 concessions within department stores including Debenhams. It claims to “provide young women with affordable, stylish and figure enhancing fashion”. Reports suggest Debenhams may make an offer to buy the brand and remaining stock.

SUMMER is definitely here but, as we spend more time outdoors, so our clothes take on frustrating outdoor stains, whether we like it or not. Some can be on the most delicate of fabrics, which makes washday a nightmare and, with this in mind, you need a few failsafe items in a kitchen cupboard or laundry room/utility room, including: - Washing-up liquid (good quality) - White vinegar - Lemon juice - Bicarbonate of soda - Washing powder (good quality) - Stain remover - Flour - Eucalyptus oil Fruit juice/cocktails The odd spillage on a summer top is inevitable, and blackcurrant, orange and especially berry of any type needs to be treated quickly. Try to deal with it while the stain is still wet by putting cold water on it. But don’t use hot water as this will set it. Rinse the stain in cold water, dab on a quality washing-up liquid, which will break down the stain, then wash normally at 40 degrees. BBQ embarrassment Imagine the scene. You’re at a friend’s BBQ, talking away, and you miss your mouth. So

your crisp new top is wearing most of the sauce. Suffer the embarrassment and then as soon as you get home, treat it by rinsing in cold water. Then, soak in a bucket of water filled with ½ cup of white vinegar for 30 minutes and wash as normal. Olive oil Al Fresco eating is lovely, but salad dressing over your trousers or dress isn’t. Put flour on the stain to absorb the oil, then shake it off and wash as normal. Or you can put water over the stain with a spot of Eucalyptus oil because it’s a natural disinfectant and will absorb the

grease. Rust marks Clothes maidens/dryers, whatever you want to call them, will rust if they are not made of plastic. This brownish, orangey stain can get on your clothes, so get the item in question, put a clean tea towel behind the stain and apply either fresh or bottled lemon juice over it and leave to dry. Then wash as normal and you should find the lemon will dissolve the stain. Pollen The orange-yellow centre of flowers, as well as making people sneeze, can cause awful marks on clothing. Lilies

are often the worst. The solution is to brush off or hoover the pollen, then wash the item with ½ cup of bicarbonate of soda added to your normal wash to remove the residue of the stain. Faking it Whether it’s fake tan or hair dye, both are extremely difficult to remove. Towels or clothing will have to be washed on the highest setting the item will permit with a quality detergent. It might take a few washes, and you might have to revert to a commercial stain-remover product purchased from the supermarket or specialist.

UK DIY spending falls ACCORDING to a new report from Lloyds TSB, households in the UK are spending less on DIY, with expenditure figures being at the lowest for 12 years. www.diy.net report that spending peaked in 2004 at £14.66bn, but it has steadily dropped over the past six years, and declined 13% in real terms between 2009 and

2010. During this period, spending on materials such as paint, wallpaper and plaster fell by 15% to £5.6bn, while expenditure on tools and equipment for DIY, including power tools and lawnmowers, dropped by 9%. Since 2000, spending on materials for DIY has decreased by 20%, totalling £5.61bn in 2010, while spending on tools and equipment

rose by 55% to £3.89bn in 2010 (from £2.50bn in 2000). And when they are prepared to spend on home improvements, the report found UK householders would still rather do it themselves. While DIY spending in 2010 declined by just 0.2% compared with 2000, expenditure on tradesmen's services fell by substantially more over

the same period, declining 34% to £6.71bn in 2010, from £10.22bn in 2000. Lloyds TSB housing economist Suren Thiru said: "Spending on DIY has fallen significantly over the past year. The current squeeze on household finances from high inflation and weak earnings growth has made it difficult for many households to spend as much as they used to on discretionary items such as home maintenance. However, the benefits associated with maintaining or improving your property is likely to ensure that over the long term the popularity of DIY will remain enduring." According to Lloyds, the latest available regional figures show householders in Wales are the UK's biggest spenders on DIY, with an average outlay of £588 in 2009, followed by the North East (£572) and the West Midlands (£556). In contrast, those living in the North West spent the least on DIY, with an average outlay of £322. Source www.diyweek.net

DAVID HUDGELL Getting to the root of your gardening problems! Email: David.hudgell@canarianweekly.com

I HAVE received a couple of intriguing email inquiries from readers this week and I trust I can answer them. The first one is from Jonathan Hamilton-Jones, who writes: Dear David, I enjoy reading your weekly gardening page. I have recently purchased a young lemon tree in a pot, I have had it for the past two months, and it seemed very happy until two weeks ago. It flowered and I have several young lemons. The problem is that the top-growth leaves are curling up and going brown, so do you have any tips to solve this?

It is possible you have overwatered the tree, in which case the lower roots will have rotted in saturated soil. Trim them back and prune the top of the tree to compensate for root loss. Repot it in a free-draining mix of soil and fertiliser and water in about two litres a week. I also have some young runner-bean plants, about 30cm high, and some of the leaves are showing signs of brittleness in the centres and are going brown. Please can you help?

Beans do not need much water and it could be that you are overdoing it, or it may be a case of the soil not containing enough nutrients. The other question comes from Rick Sweeney, who writes: Dear David, I am growing sunflowers and they are doing very well. One is about 8ft tall and has no fewer than 18 heads on it. I have searched the internet and it would seem that this is very unusual. I’m trying to find out if it is some sort of record. They are all in flower, or about to be, and look absolutely stunning. How rare do you think this is?

Dial up this app plan to start growing your own THE British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV), the environmental charity, has this week launched a free mobile app to get the world growing. The Get Growing app is a new charity, set up to help amateur gardeners grow their own. It also shows how much money they could save on supermarket fruit and veg purchases. It is available in the iPhone App Store and features a unique one-touch calculator (using data from Which?). The info enables users to enter their plot size to find out exactly how much food they can grow. Also featured on the app are home-grown recipes from Julia Bradbury, Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall, Alan Titchmarsh, Charlie Dimmock and Linda Barker. There’s a monthly planting calendar as well, and info on how BTCV supports communities, a sign-up for BTCV’s

mental charity’s Chief Executive, said: “A growing number of people are starting to grow their own as a response to recession, and concern about where their food comes from. “Growing your own is simple, fun and can help you save money and take action against climate change. This app is a great way to communicate BTCV’s messages and show just how easy it is to get

growing.” He added: “We rely heavily on voluntary donations. The work we do is made possible only by people like you - people who want to make a difference to their community and environment.” The BTCV’s corporate partners include the Government, Big Lottery Fund, local authorities, plus Government agencies such as English Nature and individual donors.

Blue Peter’s garden will continue to grow on us! AFTER 53 glorious, innovative years, the last Blue Peter show to be filmed at the BBC’s West London Television Centre took place on Tuesday.

Not too rare, I’m afraid. According to the 2004 Guinness Book of World Records, a sunflower grown in Michigan had 837 heads on one plant. Also, America’s National Sunflower Association say that although the cultivated sunflower has only one flower or head, the wild “cousins” growing in ditches and other areas throughout much of North America have multiple flowers and heads. Multiples of 20 and more heads are common. The wild ones are the genetic basis of today’s domesticated sunflower. Incidentally, the sunflower was cultivated by native Americans over 1,000 years ago. It is the national flower of Russia and the State flower of Kansas, and a single head can grow to more than an incredible one metre in diameter.

newsletter and a donate button. Linda, a BTCV supporter and interior designer said: “Growing your own is a great way to make a difference to the environment.” The Get Growing app is part of BTCV’s award-winning Carbon Army campaign to encourage more food growing as a response to climate change. Tom Flood CBE, the environ-

It also spelled the last appearance of the famous Blue Peter Garden in that part of the country. But never fear because the Beeb is planning to create a new one up north. The world’s longest-running children’s show is one of many programmes being relocated to the BBC’s new Media City site in Salford. In less than three months, the studios will be up and running, and a new Blue Peter Garden will be in place - on a second-storey

rooftop. The big problem now for BBC bosses is whether to retain some or all of the features of the old garden, which was created in 1974 by renowned gardener Percy Thrower. Among them is a totem pole, carved from red cedar by an Alaskan Indian artist and introduced to the garden in October 2008. There’s also a time capsule, a statue of Petra the dog the programme’s first pet and an Italian sunken goldfish pond. Petra appeared on screen from 1962-1977 and a statue was erected in the garden in her memory. A Blue Peter spokeswoman said: “We’re creating a new rooftop garden in Salford and we want to preserve the iconic pieces, but it’s not

confirmed which ones yet. “We are still discussing what will happen with the Blue Peter Garden in London, but we’ll make sure all the important memorabilia is preserved.” The BBC’s flagship magazine programme for children had been going 16 years when it was decided to create a new feature for the show. Thus, the Blue Peter garden came into being, enabling presenters to show children how gardens change during the seasons, how different plants could thrive under different weather conditions and even how to make a bird-feeder for the constant feathered visitors through the winter. Percy threw himself into

the project, designing a working crop garden with various areas for different types of plants. The completed garden was unveiled on the show in March, 1974. The layout of the garden remained the same until 1979, when Percy redesigned it to give the appearance of an Italian sunken garden, complete with fish pond and benches for the presenters to sit on. Now, after two years of debate, a Blue Peter garden has a new home, near Manchester United’s Old Trafford ground, and with views over the water to Salford Quays. As for the original garden, the BBC is discussing opening it to local children by removing the wall that separates it from a park.

NICOLA ROBERTS Your beauty expert Email: nicola.roberts@canarianweekly.com

Prepare for bare exposure! MOST of us ladies, in some shape of form, are now preparing to expose our bikini-clad or summer-clothed bodies. Whether we live here in Tenerife and go out once a week on our day off, or if we are here on holidays for two weeks, we want to feel as healthy as possible. That’s why we discard layers of clothing, either to walk around and explore the sights or drowse on the beach or around the poolside. These days, there are plenty of pampering products and ideas to make us feel more confident in exposing our usually unexposed bits, be they upper arms, legs or tummies, etc. Scrubbed smooth Skin that is soft, smooth and in good condition is definitely sure to make you feel better about exposing bits which are usually unexposed! Exfoliating, moisturising and hair removal is simple and can be done at home or in the salon. Exfoliate Remove dead/dry skin cells from the skin’s outer surface, leaving it even and smooth all over. Body scrubs (also called peels, exfoliators or gommage), with skin sloughing particles, can also contain plant or marine extracts which boost the circulation and leave us feeling refreshed, silky smooth and energised. Always concentrate on

rough, dry patches, such as knees, elbows and ankles. Dry-skin brushing is also excellent and really boosts our lymphatic and circulatory systems. This involves a series of sweeping strokes, starting from the feet and working all the way up to the shoulders. Moisturising Applying a nourishing body lotion after you bathe or take a shower is essential to trap in all of our body’s own oils. When we moisturise, we are basically applying a pro-

01 July 2011 - 07 July 2011

tective film of oil to our skin, which holds in the moisture that is so easily lost. This brings about dry, dehydrated skin, which will give us the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. An intensive moisturising session could start with a body scrub, continue with a bath of aromatherapy oils, like detoxifying lemongrass or relaxing lavender, and finish with a thick, rich application of body milk. Hair removal The most simple and straightforward method of

hair removal is waxing; it’s quick, cheap and fairly painfree. Hair is pulled out of the follicle, sometimes with the root still attached, and regrowth appears within 4-6 weeks. The hair will appear finer and sometimes does not bother to return at all. If you wax regularly, take the appointment 2-3 days before baking on the beach, as skin can still be quite sensitive. If you are a complete newcomer to the world of waxing, it is advisable to wax 3-4 days before exposure to

sun, saltwater and chlorine. ‘No-sun’ tan Undeniably, a bronzed body appears more toned and healthy than a pale one, which is why self-tan treatments are more and more popular in the beauty salons. Perfecting the art of applying a false tan will definitely make you feel more prepared to expose that body to the sun. It is also a great way of hiding any imperfections, like stretch marks, scars, cellulite, etc. Application *Thoroughly exfoliate body from top to toe *Shower, ensuring perfect removal of all ‘grainy’ bits *Dry body *Apply product using disposable, surgical gloves (or scrub hands directly after application) *Use product like a body lotion and do not be afraid of it. Use small, circular movements *Ensure each part of body is covered and ask a partner of friend to complete your back *Take care with hands and feet as they always appear darker, so apply sparingly to these areas *Each product is different, but allow at least 20 minutes before getting dressed, preferably in dark colours because some products may stain clothes Some of the best-selling products on the market now are false tan creams / gels / lotions. People are now becoming more aware of the potential damage the

sun can cause, and they seem to be using higher protection sun products, following up with a false tanning product. Do not let the little children suffer As soon as you think of taking babies or toddlers outside in the spring/summer sun (or at any time in Tenerife), think SUNCARE PROTECTION! Remember *Never leave children exposed or unattended in the hot sunshine. Babies can overheat very quickly *Bright sunlight can hurt the eyes, so buy quality sunglasses, and make kiddies wear them *Dress them in cool, loosefitting clothing (preferably closely-woven fabrics) and a hat or cap *Apply a high-factor sunscreen every 1-2 hours to all uncovered skin, such as ears and back of the neck. Always apply generous amounts of creams, and do not skimp *If playing in or with water use a waterproof sunscreen *Have plenty of drinks available, and a shady place to rest and eat *Avoid the midday sun and try the life of the local by having a long lunch, followed by a siesta *Make the wearing of hats and sunglasses fun, ensuring no tantrums when summercomes *More and more parents are now putting their kiddies in sun suits, so check out the trendy little numbers on-line

CARL PATTISON from Robot, answers your hair questions

Don’t colour your judgement with this ‘new’ bottled bleach JUST when we thought we’d seen the last of “spray in highlighters”, here we go again. The dreaded peroxide-in-abottle is back, wreaking havoc with blondes or wannabe blondes all over Europe. This “new” product isn’t new at all. It’s the re-packaging of an old product from the Eighties which claims to lighten in the form of a spray. The models used are seen to “touch up” their roots with a quick squirt of this miracle product. On top of this, the adverts say: “Use a

hairdryer or hair iron on top of the colour once applied to accelerate the lightening process.” Does this sound good to you? Me neither, because the results will be as before: a ginger, brassy mess that literally “burns” the colour out of the hair and is totally unstable as it’s not a “stable” colour. That means it’s literally peroxide in a bottle and is no better than household bleach. You have been warned, so I don’t want to hear any “Carl, I’ve had an accident” phone calls, thank you. Think wisely before employing any home haircare treatments.

After Kate, here is the real deal OKAY, you remember my hoop of horror for poor Kate on her wedding day? Well, I’m not all bad because here are some people in the public eye who have got it just right.

Finally shes gone for the chop and ditched those dreadfull hair extensions, simple elegant and so chic, welcome back to 2011 Christina - 8/10

Your weekly hair treat THINK you’re doing your hair good by using a treatment but not leaving it on long enough to penetrate?

If you really want to treat your hair, wash early in the evening and apply the masque. Go to bed in the masque and the next day, just rinse well. You may want to put a towel on your pillow.

You should be using a deep-conditioning masque at least once a week if your hair is coloured, and you should wrap your hair in a damp towel and leave for a good 10-15 minutes.

Frankie Sandford (The Saturdays) so easy to maintain, versatile and understated. Forget overstyling its all in the cut, well done her stylist - 9/10

There’s no answer to this! This is a short story from the salon, I’ll leave you to make a decision and maybe apply it to your hair-care regime. Client: “I haven’t had my hair cut for over six months. I rarely use conditioner and I

swim in the sea every day and sunbathe afterwards. I don’t brush my hair as it’s too knotty. And when I wash it, lots of hair falls out. Why is it so dry?” Me: “I give up!”

DEAR CHRISTINE Your resident Agony Aunt Email: agony.aunt@canarianweekly.com

Dear Christine, I’m 43 years old, and was with my partner for 12 years before he left me and our four year-old twin daughters. I am finding it very hard to cope on my own, and I snap at the girls a lot. I don’t really have many reliable friends in Tenerife, but wouldn’t go back to England because my family aren’t too reliable, either. My ex’s family is keen for me to stay here because of the twins, but I am so lonely all the time. The twins are starting school in September. That will leave me alone all day and I’ll hate it. Please help. Alison Dear Alison, I’m sorry you’re feeling so lonely and unsupported, but you seem to realise you shouldn’t be taking out your frustrations on your daughters. Lots of people like you are looking for new friends. Some, of course, are not - and that speaks volumes about them, not about you. Your girls starting school will open lots of new doors for you, believe me. If you make friendly overtures towards other mothers whose children have joined the reception class, most will be grateful since many will be alone all day for the very first time. Also, how about inviting a few other mums to a bar/cafe for coffee and a chat during the day? Once your girls start making friends, you can invite the friends to your home after school or at weekend, and that’s another great way to get friendly with other mums. According to studies, seven or eight out of 10 people respond warmly to friendly gestures, and that number increases when you approach people in the same situation as yourself, which is the case here. You really need to initiate conversations with as many as possible to maximise your chances. You could also be looking for things to fill your time while the twins are at school. This could involve joining a Spanish language class, perhaps, a walking group, art group, or the gym even. Also, how about making the most of the times when the twins are

with your ex’s parents? Instead of staying indoors, you could go swimming, walking, cycling or take the opportunity to spend time with a new friend. You might also want to think about looking for a part-time job for during school hours - one which puts you in contact with other people, whom you should see as prospective new friends. I would also suggest that you order the book and CD How To Mend Your Broken Heart by Paul McKenna and Hugh Willbourn. It has some great self-help techniques and will help you boost your self-esteem. If, of course, you believe you may be suffering from depression, I hope you’ll talk things through with your GP. All the very best, Christine Dear Christine, I feel guilty all the time, even when people are trying to be nice to me, and I can see that it frustrates them. This only makes me feel guiltier, and so it goes on. I’ve been like this now for about six months and it’s getting worse. Is this normal for a teenager, or am I very weird? How can I feel less guilty? Tim Dear Tim, Quite a few teens feel this way at some point, so you are certainly not weird. That internal voice you have - the one we all have - needs adjusting a little, I’d say, and you could start by writing down a list of everything you feel guilty about, adding to it over several days. Then, set aside an hour or two to go over your list, answering the following questions for each of your points: How does feeling guilty about this help me or others? Is this behaviour realistically my responsibility? Guilt has a social function. It teaches us to behave in socially acceptable ways so we can feel accepted and good about ourselves. If someone is upset about something you've done, guilt makes you think about it. Then you have to decide whether you (a) want to apologise to the person and (b) make amends.

If you’ve stood on someone's foot, then it makes sense for you to apologise. If he/she stood on your foot, then the apology needs to come from them rather than you - although you should accept the apology with good grace. Once you’ve acted constructively where you’re to blame, you don’t need to hang on to the guilt. What you’ve described, though, is inappropriate guilt, which stems from distorted thinking. Many people grow up holding on to unhealthy childhood beliefs, such as that everyone else is more important than they are; everyone else is better than they are; they don’t deserve anything good and their feelings don't count. When we’re little, the big, powerful adults around us can tell us off and make us do things. We look to them for guidance, and can feel inferior as a result. But as we mature, we are supposed to realise that, actually, we’re just as important as anyone else and that no one is perfect. So, Tim, try seeing your feelings as a useful source of information before you decide how or whether to take action on them. Tell yourself you are allowed to belong with nice, accepting people. Write out your permissions and read them aloud often. You could leave copies of these in your underwear drawer or on your mirror - anywhere you might come across them frequently to remind you that they are true. If you feel you need my permission to be happy, you have it. I hope you give yourself that permission, too. Liking and valuing yourself is the most important lesson you’ll ever learn. Christine Christine Craggs-Hinton is the author of 18 self-help books, including ‘Natural Treatments for Arthritis’, ‘How to Lower your Blood Pressure’, and ‘Coping with Tinnitus’. Her books are available from all good UK bookshops as well as ‘The Paper Shop’, Apolo Centre and ‘Bookswop’, Edificio Cristianos 1, both of which are in Los Cristianos.

Bon appetit: will French produce boost Ocado? ONLINE supermarket Ocado has reported its first half-year profit, swinging back from the hefty loss it made this time 12 months ago. The grocery delivery service pulled in a modest pretax profit of £200,000 over the 24 weeks to May 15 compared with a £6.7m loss over the same period last year. Ocado chief executive Tim Steiner said the business had no shortage of customers, but was being held back by limited warehouse space, where grocery orders are put together. The company hopes investment of £80m over this year and next will tackle the problem and help it deliver a target 180,000 orders per week. Commenting on the results, business analyst Anna Smee of Hundred Consulting said Ocado had shown “a degree of resilience in the current economic climate”. Yet she cautioned that the online grocer could soon find itself struggling to compete with major UK super-

markets. “As these other retailers offer increasingly sophisticated online shopping experiences alongside stores, Ocado could fast find its model outdated,” she said. In a move that could be seen as a bid to market itself away from the mainstream supermarkets, Ocado also announced it would soon be offering customers a range of authentic French food products. The move is the fruit of a deal struck with the French supermarket Carrefour to supply its ‘Reflets de France’ selection of regional delicacies. “We believe the addition of this authentic and historic French range will complement our existing lines from our partner Waitrose,” the company said. Ocado’s results come nearly a year after the company floated on the London Stock Exchange. Its shares have had a rollercoaster ride in the meantime, plunging to 120.9 pence as some analysts questioned its strategy, then surging to 290 pence after it broke into pre-tax profit in the fourth quarter of last year.

The Bistro’s new taste of success - at no extra cost!

SOMETHING’S changing down at The Bistro in Los Cristianos, but don’t worry. It’s not the great food, the reasonable pricing or even the fabulous service. What’s changing is the selection of dishes on the daily seven-euro menu. Now, I must stress that it’s not all of them (I can hear the screams of “Oh no, not the belly pork”). It was just felt that it would be nice to change or update a few of the options. New on the menu and one I really like the sound of is the cooked ham served with two fried eggs and real chips. It’s a true British classic and, as the ham is home-cooked, you can be sure every mouthful will be tender and full of flavour. Also new is the Spinach and Ricotta tortellini in a choice of sauces - a hearty portion of a vegetarian option, which also sounded tasty to my normally-meat-sensitive ears. And with garlic bread on the side well, you just have to mop up your plate. It really is a filling meal. There is another new dish and I will get to that in a moment. But for now, pour the red wine and warn the kitchen we’re going in. All that talk of garlic bread had given me a craving, so when it arrived covered in pineapple and dripping with cheese, I knew I’d made the right choice. And with my partner ordering the Mussels in a creamy garlic sauce and crusty bread, again for mopping, we settled down to enjoy the evening, complete with a lovely breeze out on covered terrace of this

renowned restaurant. Sunday reviews always pose a problem for me. Should I have something from the menu or a full-on roast dinner? As I have tried many of the main meals and written about quite a few, I thought it would be okay to indulge my need for a good Sunday dinner. And good it is, from the succulent cuts of meat (I opted for a mix of turkey and beef), to the fabulous selection of vegetables and potatoes. And it was all finished off with the biggest Yorkshire pudding I have ever had the pleasure of destroying. With a smothering of rich meaty gravy as well, this really is a wonderful weekend treat. While I was battling with the monster Yorky, my partner took delivery of the third change to the menu, which was another option for vegetarians. The fresh-baked Camembert stuffed with tomatoes and peppers really does spark the senses, not just in presentation but both in aroma and taste with all the different ingredients melting

into one glorious crescendo of flavours. With an accompaniment of fresh salad and bruschetta, this really is worthy of a place on a menu already bursting with tantalising, flavoursome food. Dessert came in the shape of a Lemon and Lime Cheesecake and was a perfect end to a wonderful dinner: light and sharp flavours and a display of strawberries and cream to make Wimbledon

jealous. And with a final cup of coffee and buttons near to popping, we’re done! The Bistro has always been associated with great food, and these additions can only enhance the menu. With a daily special for only seven euros and Saturday steak night (rump steak with mushrooms onions and real chips) for only eight, it really does make for an inexpensive, quality meal.

Gran Canaria is the perfect paradise isle GRAN CANARIA is reckoned to be one of the last remaining paradise islands in Europe because it has something for everyone and more besides. It’s like a mini-continent, featuring lush forests, exotic fauna and flora, Sahara-like dunes, mountains, volcanic craters and the odd flurry of snow on the highest peaks. It also has beautiful, sandy beaches, lively cities and towns, and those intriguing villages which tell you so much about the way island life used to be there before the age of commercialism. Gran Canaria has the largest population of all the Canary islands, with one-million-plus inhabitants, and those in the know also boast of Las Palmas being the most dynamic capital city in the Canaries, as well as having incredibly beautiful coastlines and spectacular beaches. Whether you like to surf, swim in tranquil waters or just relax on the beach, the wide variety will certainly make a big impression. Las Palmas, also the largest city in the Canaries, is situated in the north-eastern part of the island, set in magnificent scenery and comprising two bays and beaches, in Playa de las Canteras and Playa de las Alcaravaneras. It was founded in 1478 and has an important historical and cultural heritage, much of which can be found in Vegueta. That is the oldest quarter of the town, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990.

The city has an impressive array of hotels and apartments, and its Puerto de La Luz harbour is one of the most important in Europe, giving the city a genuine cosmopolitan image. Thanks to the explosion of tourism, Las Palmas is a bustling city today, overflowing with Spanish ambience, history and culture. There is always plenty going on there to keep you occupied, including the contrasting best of both worlds: a long stretch of sandy beach and the hustle

and bustle of city life. In fact, Canarian wrestling and vela latina (Canarian lateen sailing) originated in Las Palmas, and regattas are held there most weekends. There are lots of top shops and boutiques, side streets laden with cafes and excellent places for tapas and drinks, and tourists will never have to venture far to reach places of interest. Gran Canaria is especially welcoming for families, with the water parks and beaches of Puerto Rico ideal for kids

and parents alike, while those seeking solace can escape to Mogan’s quiet fishing villages. Three motorways make it perfect for those tourists keen on travelling throughout the island, either in a hired car or by bus. The island attracts more than two million visitors a year, and many of them head for the south of the island, where the climate tends to be sunnier less rainy than the north. And while the east coast is relatively flat with several

beaches, the mountainous west coast is more picturesque. Among the many Natural Protected Spaces on the island are the Rural Park of Nublo, the Doramas Jungle and the Azuaje Ravine. Palmitos Park, set in sensational surroundings in the mountains, is spectacular in every sense of the word. It houses more than 230 bird species (including birds of prey) and has daily parrot shows. It also features mammals, reptiles, an aquarium, a

cactus garden and now, a dolphin pool. It is about half-an-hour inland by local bus from the centre of Maspalomas, one of the main resorts on the southern coast, and it is well worth putting aside an entire day to enjoy the wonderful sights within. In fact, the Maspalomas area, which includes the towns of San Agustín, Playa del Inglés Sonnenland and Meloneras, is the most popular target for tourists. Visitors to Puerto Rico or Playa del Ingles often comment about them being “not very Spanish”. That’s not altogether surprising, though, because Puerto Rico is only about 30 years old and Playa del Ingles just 10 years older. Before these resorts appeared, there was just arid, barren countryside and a pretty beach at Playa del Ingles. So the two places were purpose-built for tourism. To see and experience the Gran Canaria way of life, or any of the Canarian or Spanish traditions, you will have to visit any one of a huge number of towns or villages scattered around the island. Head anywhere away from the south and you’ll find a rich culture of traditions, festivals, architecture and gastronomy. But wherever you are on Gran Canaria, whatever your taste or age, you will find the perfect location, with a huge variety of things to do to transform your trip into the holiday of a lifetime. It is bound to live long in the memory. It certainly does for many holiday-makers, who return there year after year.

Travel firms ordered to scrap card charges AIRLINES and travel companies face the threat of legal action if they continue to spring hidden charges on customers who pay by debit and credit cards. An investigation by the Office for Fair Trading (OFT) found “considerable evidence” of drip-pricing where surcharges are added to the total price only after

Page 44

people have clicked through a number of web pages. The watchdog described the practice as “misleading” as it released findings of a 90-day review following a super-complaint by Which?, the independent consumer body. However, some airlines, such as Ryanair, said all “optional” fees are avoidable and that the investigation would not change the way it did business. The OFT did not name the

worst offenders, but pointed out that easyJet charges £8 per card transaction after customers pass through eight web pages. Ryanair adds £6 after four pages. There is no justification for charging excessive fees on credit and debit cards. The OFT is asking the Government to change the law so that all debit card surcharges are scrapped. It says that a number of rail, airline and ferry companies have already agreed to

scrap them, but some firms have refused point blank. The OFT said it would consider legal action if the situation does not change. The review points out that in many cases the consumer has no option but to use a credit or debit card and they are effectively being made to pay for paying. One of the airlines to scrap debit card charges is Monarch. A spokesman said: “There is no justification for charg-

ing excessive fees on credit and debit cards. “We had already taken the decision to cancel debit card fees some time ago following an intensive six month review. “Our customers expect an up front and transparent pricing structure from their airline and it’s good to see that in light of this important decision, other airlines will now have to follow our lead.” The OFT did not explore credit card charges because

of the complex, multi-layered pricing structure. However, the Consumer Rights Directive, which is currently going through the European Parliament, would, if successful, force governments to ensure that only the bare minimum is charged for credit card transactions. Which? welcomed the OFT’s review and urged all online companies to take the recommendations onboard.

Smart new Beemers are in comfort zone of their own THE new BMW 5 Series, scheduled for showrooms by the end of the year, will debut officially at the prestigious Frankfurt Autoshow in September. And what a looker! No wonder guests at a sneak preview last week were all over this stunning machine, which has been designed to give more

power and better mileage, apart from its looks. In terms of sales, the 5 Series lies just behind the 3 Series but, amazingly, represents about 50% of the company’s profits This 2012 series comes in six model types, all with more features and better engines than the 5 series of earlier years. Five models sport the six-cylinder engine and one has a V-8 cylinder engine. The entire series has been given a new front look, with

Herbie rides again –for real this time VOLKSWAGEN have developed a self-driving car, leading to the mid-boggling prospect of a real-life Herbie in their showrooms. Herbie, the VW Beetle with a mind of its own, featured first in Walt Disney’s The Love Bug in 1968. It then became a “movie star” in its own right in a series of films, from Herbie Rides Again to the last one, Herbie: Fully Loaded six years ago. The real-life VW system, still a prototype yet fully functional, can drive semiautomatically at speeds of up to 80mph. It allows the driver to relinquish control completely on the motorway as the car follows the road on its own steering, accelerating, braking and changing lanes all on its own. And it even sticks to

the speed limit and obeys correct lane discipline. It works using a complicated combination of cameras, lasers and sensors, scanning both the road ahead and the driver. But Volkswagen say it works only if the driver is paying full attention to what’s going on, so there’s no having a crafty doze, and it is able to respond quickly to emergency situations. All the equipment used to make the system work is capable of being operated for real, and it actually combines current-lane assist and adaptive cruise-control functions. The system was developed with EU funding, under the remit of a project called HAVEit, which stands for Highly Automated Vehicles for Intelligent Transport.

fresh rear lights. The 5281 and 528xi models are equipped with 17-inch tires, powered front seats, a sunroof and an iDrive system that can be programmed to set radio stations. The high-tech features included are active cruise control that warns the driver the car in front of him is getting too close. The car also has a head display for the driver, and an ignition system that does not need a key. The cabins have been made with the occupants’ comfort in mind. People sitting in the front have been given more head and shoulder room, and the same has been provided for those in the back, which adds up to an all-round comfortable ride. The exteriors have also undergone some

revision. For instance, the sedan and sports wagon models come with headlights complete with the latest clear-glass technology and LED indication directors. Albert Biermann, project leader of the M5, say the V-8 model has a better throttle response than the two X models. The power plant is combined with

the new developed 7-speed DCT and races from 0-62mph in 4.4secs, going on to 124mph in just 13secs. The maximum speed is electronically-restricted to 155mph, but those choosing the optional Driver’s Package will be able to push it up to 190 mph. Power is transferred to the rear wheels by a

seven-speed dual-clutch paddle-shift gearbox, which has been optimised for maximum acceleration with a launch mode, but also for excellent manners around town. And a Low Speed Assistance function keeps the car trickling through stop-start traffic with a light nudge of the accelerator. The M5’s chassis is fitted with electronically-controlled dampers and firmer suspension, adjustable steering weight, a stability control system with M Dynamic mode and race-spec brakes. The 2012 BMW M5 should hit the European markets in December and is likely to sell from about £73,000 (about 82,000 euros). And for that you really do get value for money!

Jambo does the business again! THE finals night of the Oasis Fm Pool League, held at Palms Bar in Torviscas, was another success - and there were plenty of upsets. The final nine players in the singles event, sponsored by Liberty Seguros, provided great entertainment. In the first upset of the night Graham, from Ssecond Ddivision Legends B, roared back from a frame down to beat Palms A’‘s Johnny. The Irishman has been in fine form, but he had was no match for Graham’‘s determination. This set Graham up with a lasteight match against Ket. This time he took the lead against the Ddivision Oone player. But despite a brief rally he was always in control, and he sank the final black to book his semi final place 2-1. Meanwhile, Tony, from Hammers C and Inn The Pink’‘s Ricky were going at it, erm, hammer and tongs on table three. Tony took the opener, but Ricky levelled the match before taking the nervy decider. On table two, Inn The Pink’‘s second finalist, James, was giving Jambo, from Hammers A, all the trouble he wanted. James was bossing the opener, but miss an easy pot to gift Jambo the frame. It was a case of Dejadeja vue in the second as once again James again grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory to sent Jambo into the last four. The match of the night would be a right rumble between Ashley and Adrian.

Singles winner Jambo

The Irishman from Bar 180 made a fast start and Ashley looked all at sea in the first frame. Adrian’‘s clean potting saw him take the rubber and he

was odds- on for the match after Ashley’‘s break in the second. Adrian went through the gears and with his opponent still having six balls on the table, he was on a straight

black into the middle bag for the victory. Inexplicably, he missed, and the groan could be heard back in San Blas. Ashley grabbed his lifeline with both

hands and, with some canny snookers, he stole the frame. The decider was cagey and Ashley looked stronger as he got down to the black. But a couple of breaks went against him (isn’‘t it funny how the luck evens itself out?) and Adrian had his another chance, againbut h. He couldn’‘t take it and Ashley took won the the thriller to book his place against Jambo. It was a close semi- final, but Jambo always had his nose in front. Ashley did manage to level at 1-1 before Jambo showed his class to take his place in the final 3-1. The second semi was an allSsecond Ddivision affair, which turned out to be very onesided. Graham had beaten Paddy from Sumemerlands, Neil from Gaffers and Hoops’‘ Chris just to make finals night, and he wasn’‘t going to be denied his final place. He stormed out the traps and won as comfortably as the 3-0 scoreline suggests. But unfortunately for him, Unfortunately there was no fairytale ending. Jambo brought his A game, and his opponent was never in the contest, and . hHe wrapped up his second singles title in barely twenty 20 minutes, winning as he won 3-0. The doubles event never really hit the heights. Defensive play dominated and all the frames took some time to finish. In the first semifinal, Summerlands’‘ Grandad and Penguin looked nervy against the Hammers’ pairing of Tony and Ken, and the father- and- son team were always in it.

They had their chances in the first before losing, but did take the second to square matters. This simply woke up Penguin , and, with Grandad finally cutting out the silly shots, they came through 3-1. Their dream final against fellow- Summerland pair Ket and Ray never materialised. In a match of attrition, they were out stayed by Mark and Mal, who had decent support from their Terrace Bar pals. They came through 3-1 in a match that wasn’‘t one for the purists. A few Jaeger‘s were sunk before the final, and Penguin and Grandad made a slick start. They breeze into a 2-0 lead and the tie seemed over. However, the Terrace boys had other ideas. They controlled the third and, after some cagey defensive play, they took the fourth as well. The Summerland pair were now sharing some anxious looks. Another Jaeger calmed the nerves and they were never in trouble in the decider. Mark and Mal’‘s potting suddenly went, and there were no complaints as the final black was sunk to give last year’‘s runners up from Summerlands the winners’ trophy twelve 12 months on. The Presentation Night is at the Showtime venue on next Saturday (9th July) with an 8pm start, As well as cabaret, food and the trophy presentation, there will the Chairman’s Invitation tournament. This will be a oneframe shoot- out involving the season’s top players of the season!

Parents in revolt over the cost of replica football kits for kids PREMIER League football clubs are facing a revolt from the angry parenting forum Mumsnet, whose members are fed up with paying exorbitant prices for children’s replica kits. Mumsnet says the average cost of a replica kit for an eight-year-old is now a staggering £57.54, with seven top-flight clubs charging £60 or more.

Page 46

The group adds: “When you include names, badges and logos to complete the replica strip, it costs on average around £80.” Unsurprisingly, parents are angry, with eight out of 10 believing they are being ripped off. And all but 3% say the merchandise offers poor value for money. Even worse, the total outlay for the home and away for kids, with all the trimmings, comes to £173.72. Mumsnet points out that a non-branded kit from Marks & Spencer would cost £27,

while campaign group Labour Behind The Label

estimates costs at just £9. That means a mark-up of

over 500%! Mumsnet founder Justine Roberts says

in her protest letter to clubs: “As families across the UK make cutbacks to cope with the economic climate, we believe the Premier League should work with parents to ensure that replica kits are affordable.” In the past, soccer clubs have argued that their replica kits are quality products, with the latest high-tech fabrics. Premier League officials say it is up to individual clubs to price their kits, but clubs contacted refused to comment on their pricing policy.

VIRGO (August 24thSeptember 23rd) Turn last week’s negatives into positives with creative innovative tactics, and a liberal dose of charm, especially over seemingly unyielding career moves. There still seems to be power struggles over love versus freedom issues at home as well, so learn to compromise with partners. LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd) Proceed with caution over personal money matters, especially if you’ve borrowed without asking, as there will be hell to pay if partners find out before you have time to pay it back. Property matters and legalities could become heated if others think you’re going over the top. But keep calm and you’ll land the sale which will change your life. SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd) You’ll only add to

Page 48

your stress and tension by bottling up something that needs to be said, so take the bull by the horns and get it out. Don’t go in there all guns blazing, but proceed with caution. Discuss shared assets with quiet calm and you’ll soon unearth a mutual compromise. SAGITTARIUS (November 23rdDecember 21st) You may not make as much headway as you’d like this week, but try to be content with slow and steady progress. Take your cues from what others say and do and you won’t be seen as going out on a limb. But do watch your step over money matters at the weekend. C A P R I C O R N (December 22ndJanuary 20th) Put your thinking cap on and try to see an ongoing problem from the other person’s point of view, because being sympathetic could solve a work or family dilemma in the blink of an eye. Catch up with duties and responsibilities when you can, and end the week on a high. AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th) A challenging week tests your patience and powers of endurance at home or at work, but you’ll also need to take into account bad habits you’ve slipped into, which don’t help the situation. A change of

heart could turn things around, but only if you’re willing to commit to compromise. PISCES (February 20th-March 20th) You start the week ready to go out on a limb and take a chance over a situation, and although it’s scary, jump in at the deep end and make a splash! As the week progresses, you’ll move ahead in leaps and bounds. Avoid defensive reactions to things if you want to retain this feelgood factor ARIES (March 21stApril 20th) A great idea to enhance security issues has been a joint effort brought to light by collective communications, so don’t be contentious with the very person who holds the purse strings. Think before you speak or agreements could be hard to come by, and this would be such a shame. TAURUS (April 21stMay 21st) Digging in your heels over differences of opinion concerning legal matters or money could make others think you’re just being stubborn. You know you’re not, and you have the paperwork to validate your claim, but you still feel as though you are being ignored. Don’t worry because Lady Luck lends a hand this week. GEMINI (May 22ndJune 21st) If you can minimise distractions and keep a low profile, this week, you’ll make the kind of progress you need to get ahead over work and money. So isn’t it worth hiding away for a while? The moon in your sign makes you want to rant and rave, but it could muddy the waters, so don’t.
