A breath of fresh air for World Cup windsurfers El Medano’s 40mph winds get the show off to a roaring start ROCK music boomed out across the windswept Atlantic as the second leg of the World Windsurfing Championships began at El Medano yesterday (Thursday). And conditions were said to be “absolutely perfect”, with high winds, high tides and anticipated high drama as the world’s finest windsurfers battled for a share of the 45,000-euro prize-money on offer. In fact, the arrival of 40mph winds led to organisers pushing the event forward a day early to take advantage at the El Cabezo beach, on the other side of the harbour. Dozens of competitors - 42 men and 15 women – were geared up for this round of the World Cup, organised by the PWA (Professional Windsurfers Association). There were plenty of spectators as well, taking advantage of the hot sun and enjoying the sport and the music. Mobile cafés and surfing shops were dotted around the area and numbers are expected to grow daily as the event reaches its climax on Tuesday (or Wednesday, depending on the weather). Event organiser Daniel (Dany) Bruch, who lives locally and is ranked fifth in the world, will making full use of his knowledge of the area to get the upper hand on his opponents. Bruch is among the favourites and, needless to say, he is delighted with the reappearance of the prestigious “PWA World Cup-

PlanetWin365 Medano Tenerife 2011” event in Tenerife after a 15-year absence. “This is an amazing spot, and the jumping is really great here,” said Bruch, who was mainly responsible for bringing the event back here. “The wave comes straight at you so you can go really high. “We can expect to see super acrobatics, but I think the wave riding will be the most impressive thing as a lot of the sailors prefer that.” He added: “There is loads to do at the site, which is on the

large sandy area behind the beach and away from the wind. It’s great for spectators, and at night it will all change and become a party area, with some great Djs coming down to entertain the crowds.” The main event was preceded by the preliminaries earlier in the week, when three local windsurfers qualified to compete in the World Cup. After last week’s opening leg of the series on Gran Canaria, German Philip Kosher and 14 times women’s world champion Daida Ruano

Moreno, from the same island, arrived at El Medano as respective leaders in the second and final round of the competition in the Canaries. Besides them, other favourites for overall victory are Victor Fernandez, who won the world title last year, runner-up Ricardo Campello, from Venezuala, plus Germany’s Alex Mussolini, who also lives locally. On the women’s side, Daida’s twin Iballa, ranked second only to her sister, will be pushing her hard all the way, with compatriot Nayra

Alonso and Switzerland’s Karim Jaggi also vying for top honours. Last night (Thursday) heralded the official presentation of this leg of the World Cup, when all competitors brandished their national flags as they walked proudly through the streets of El Medano, finishing in the main plaza, on the seafront. Another bonus for spectators is that they can take part in various events throughout the week, such as the Wind Music Fest tonight and tomorrow (Saturday) from 10pm.

There is also a main draw for anybody attending the event on any one day, the luxury prize being a Renault Clio Authentique. The event could not have been taking place but for a host of sponsors, including: Tenerife Tourism, the Canary Islands Government, Granadilla’s Department of Tourism, PlanetWin365 Head Surf Shop, Arenas del Mar, Sheraton La Caleta and Renault. Also involved are Ashotel, Travel Zipangu, Fuente Alta, CocaCola, Multieducacional and Amarilla Golf.

José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero maintained that we will end the year with economic growth, “not as much as we would wish, still not enough to create significant job creation, but the sustainability of economic growth in Spain is a fact; and we have to persevere with the reforms being undertaken despite the difficult climate in which we

TENERIFE Tourism Corporation has conducted a campaign to encourage domestic tourism and more residents from other islands Last month Tenerife Tourism began a promotional campaign in the archipelago with the main objective being to promote holidays within the Canary Islands, a market that accounted for 570,000 visitors last year. This initiative includes radio coverage plus digital and written media advertisements about the friendly and hospitable nature of Tenerife. The campaign, whose main purpose is to increase reservations on the island as well as improving the image and position, intends to take full advantage of the fact that we are the best neighbours and

Cáritas, in response to a question from the Member of Parliament for the CiU, Josep Antoni Durán i Lleida, the President of the Government said that the Government “recognises and values “the important work being carried out and reiterated the effort that the Government has

made to tackle situations of risk of social exclusion. In this respect, he stated that since 2008, social expenditure has increased by 22%, or 12% if unemployment benefits are excluded. The President of the Government went on to say that 80% of households in

which its members are unemployed receive some form of public income, whether contributory, through care or benefiting from active income through social reinsertion that reaches 180,000 people. Furthermore, he underlined that the Personal Income Tax

allocation for social ends has risen from 0.5% to 0.7% in the last three years and increased from 105 million euros to 205 million euros in 2010. As a result of this method, Cáritas has increased its revenues in 2010 by 77%, according to the President of the Government. Taxation In response to the question from the Member of Parliament for the ER-IU-ICV, Joan Ridao, about the possibility of increasing tax for highincome earners, the President of the Government stated that in the last 18 months the Government has made an effort to strengthen the progressive nature of taxes to “make the division of the burden of the crisis more equal”. In this respect, he added, that, among other things, high-income earners have had the marginal rate and tax on revenue from capital in their Personal Income Tax returns increased, the tax on bonds and severance pay for golden parachute contracts have been stiffened, tax modifications have been made for SICAVs and the 400-euro deduction in the Personal Income Tax return has been maintained for incomes lower than 12,000 euros on an indefinite basis.

Arona tourist improvements ARONA’S Taxi association has opened a new office in Los Cristianos which they will share with the Tourist Information office in an attempt to provide a more efficient service, uniting sectors and working more closely with Toursim in the future.

The mayor of Arona, Jose Alberto Gonzalez Reveron, inaugurated the new tourist information and taxi office which is located at the bus station in Los Cristianos. The event was attended by Juan Jose Rodriguez Dorta, president of the Association of Radio Taxi de Arona, Manuel Garcia, vice president of the union of the taxi, and the Councillor for Transport and Economic Development, Marcos Afonso and of Tourism, Francisco Javier

Niño amongst others. Reveron said that this tourist information office, is to enhance a strategic sector such as taxis and specifically the stop in Los Cristianos, which is key to the area, besides being the third largest of the island. Last year there were more than 1,200,000 taxi passengers, hence its importance. On the other hand, the new office meets the objective of the municipal corporation by decentralising information

points, together with others already in operation in Las Galletas, Las Vistas beach and Avenida Rafael Puig. The Mayor also stressed the importance of this strategic sector, which has continued a pace of development and prosperity, and has invested in improvements. Ultimately, he said we’re working to improve the tourist destination of Arona to be attractive, clean, with manicured gardens and good shops.

FRYDAYS Fish ‘n’ Chips TRADITIONAL fish and chips come to Los Cristianos with the opening of a new fish and chip café bar called, Frydays; opening in the San Marino Complex, on Monday 18th July, just a short distance from the main bus station.

Armed robbery AS HOLIDAYMAKERS and locals alike were starting to go about their daily routine on Wednesday, a man armed with a handgun stole 1,400 euros from a local excursion/exchange shop in Los Cristianos.

the gun and demanding money. During the short incident the female shop worker received a blow to the face, for which she was taken to hospital. Both local and National Police arrived at the scene after the alarm was raised by a passerby. But the perpetrator escaped through the busy

The incident took place in the Passarella Commercial Centre, Avenida San Francisco, at approximately 9.30am. The man, of Hispanic descent, is well known to Police and is thought to be responsible for robberies across the south of Tenerife in the areas of El Roque, San Miguel de Abona, and El Llano del Camello plus in Granadilla. On this occasion he changed his method of intimidation from a knife to a small gun. He entered the shop brandishing

commercial centre. Police have said that he is aged 23 years of age, 5ft 10in, and was wearing a cap. An eyewitness told Canarian Weekly: “I had just parked outside, I was walking through the shopping centre to go to the bank, I heard a woman screaming, I approached the shop door and the man pulled a gun on me, I

backed off as I had my business takings with me. I ran to the bank, dumped the takings, and they rang the Police, I ran back but I had missed the guy by seconds, as he had gone through the shopping centre and around the outside.” This latest incident is the six to take place in as many months.

The new café bar has a large beautifully decorated seating area so you can eat in or you can takeaway, it’s up to you. Frydays will be open from 9am until 2am everyday, they will even deliver your cod and chips free within the local Los Cristianos area (orders over ten euros). So whether you crave cod (not panga) a nibble on a chicken nugget, savour scampi, fancy a cheeky chip or delight in a proper Doner Kebab Frydays have it all.

Husband and wife team Steph and Graham are no strangers to the area having stayed here for over 24 years. The unique aspect to Frydays which occupies what was previously Overseas Chinese restaurant is that it is completely disabled friendly. Proprietor Steph knows only to well how difficult some restaurants and bars are to access, with narrow doors, impossible toilets and even the height of the tables being wrong, but this couple who hail originally from Leicester have got all the bases covered. So fish ‘n’ chips are now available everyday at Frydays, San Marino, Los Cristianos. See advert page 23.

Madrid to tender a third Games bid IF at first you don’t succeed … after two unsuccessful attempts to land next year’s Olympic Games and the 2016 spectacular, Madrid is pitching for the 2020 event. Having lost out to London and Rio de Janeiro respectively, The Spanish capital is already preparing another bid, says Jaime Lissavetzky, the Government’s Secretary of State for Sport.

Lissavetzky insists that between 70-80% of the infrastructure is already in place, which he believes will strengthen Madrid’s campaign. This time, the city will be challenging Rome, Istanbul and possibly Durban for the honour of hosting the Games. Optimistic Madrid Mayor Alberto Ruiz Gallardón hopes it will be third-time lucky following the success of Korea’s Pyeongchang city in winning the 2018 Winter Olympics after two rebuffs as a reward for its “constancy and perseverance”.

By Maggie Leonard AS a long time fan of Sting, going back to his days with the Police, I have watched his numerous reinventions with avid interest. And the thought of a world tour with many different orchestras, and brand-new arrangements of my favourite songs, left me somewhat concerned as to how he would pull it off. I need not have been worried as the Symphonicity tour arrived at Gran Canaria’s Las Palmas Stadium on Wednesday (was Live Aid really 26 years ago to the day?). The Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra, led by Maestro Günther Herbig, took to the stage somewhat later than the advertised 9.30pm start, which had nothing to do with the star performer’s tardiness. In fact, Sting had arrived the previous day to run over the last few issues - like a rehearsal with an orchestra he was working with only once on his entire tour. Actually, it was the shambles of getting 12,000 people into the stadium through a singe set of doors which held up the start. At almost 10pm, the orchestra took their places, and the arena hushed. From stage right appeared the slim, elegant, clean-shaven, short-haired Gordon Sumner, with a huge smile and a twinkle in the eye which suggested he was going to have a good time here. He was not wrong! The opening number perhaps gave a taste of things to come as a rip-roaring rendition of Every Little Thing she does is Magic resounded

in the Las Palmas air. The concert programme outlined that a number of songs from a published list of 39 would be played. And with four (yes, four) encores, the orchestra and the man himself took the crowd from his early Police days ( Next To You from 1978’s Outlandos D’Amour) right though to his more recent work from the 2003 album Sacred Love. They played 23 songs in all, many of which had been given a total, orchestral reworking by internationallyrenowned composer/arranger Rob Mathes among others. And together with the core group of guitarist Dominic Miller, vocalist Jo Lawry, bassist Ira Coleman and drummer Rhani Krija, the performance was tight, accomplished and extremely entertaining. Highlights for me had to be

Roxanne, an almost-naughty rendition, evoking memories of the Moulin Rouge version from the film soundtrack, but adding a little more, if you can imagine that. Next was Fields of Gold, for purely personal reasons. Then there was the giddy-up Cowboy Song, which was never one of my favourite tracks. But this arrangement and orchestration felt like a hoedown in a barn on the set of Oklahoma: sheer genius on Rob Mathes’ part! A creepy, maybe over-thetop version of Moon Over Bourbon Street was complete with ghost screams, wolf howls and Sting in playful mode. However, there were two absolutely stand-out songs; in the first half Russians, which began with a stirring prelude from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, before he launched emphatically into the love theme from

Lieutenant Kije, which everyone now recognises as the “classical bit of that Sting song”. It was simply sublime, topped only by the first encore, which was Desert Rose. This song has always given me goose bumps (not least because Sting wrote one set of lyrics and then sent the music to Cheb Mami who wrote a “different” set of lyrics in Arabic. Both lyrics told basically the same story, with no collaboration between the two artists beforehand. We had a belly-dancing Sting, crazy lights (which also lit up the now belly-dancing audience), and I’m sure someone turned the volume up to 11! It was Sting’s first performance in the Canaries, and I hope that if he enjoyed himself as much as he appeared to do, he will return - maybe to Tenerife next time.

Grandad is cleared of murder after 3½ years but he can’t go home STEPHEN JOHNSON, found not guilty of murder last Friday, still can’t return to his Hetton home in Sunderland after spending 3½ years in Tenerife on bail. The 56-year-old businessman was accused of stabbing a Moroccan man to death, even though he always maintained he simply stepped in to prevent a fight. He was cleared unanimously at the High Court hearing in Santa Cruz, but has still been charged with “brawling in the street”, for which he expects to receive a fine and suspended sentence. It was appealed against because it was a last-minute charge by the prosecutor. Yet despite being told he could col-

lect his passport on Monday, it has not been returned by the court and his distraught wife, Joan, fears he has again fallen foul of the Spanish legal system. She told Canarian Weekly yesterday (Thursday): “We feel he has been let down again and he is still in turmoil. “Stephen’s lawyer, Fernando Mesa, contacted the court yesterday to request the return of his passport to enable him to travel home. Stephen was told to present himself to the High Court in Santa Cruz today. “Before he made the 1½hour journey, his interpreter contacted one of the court staff to confirm that everything would be in order when he got there, and she confirmed that he should encounter no problems. “However, on arrival, he was informed that his passport was not available for collection as

15 July 2011 - 21 July 2011

the necessary paperwork had not yet been signed off by the judge. This could take a week to 10 days.” Mrs Johnson added: “Stephen is very angry and feels that

once again, as an innocent man, he is being victimised by the system.” Her husband’s first reaction to the verdict was to say: “I’m just relieved everything is over

and I’m finally coming home.” Mr Johnson told Canarian Weekly on his return to his Las Americas apartment: “This is just another example of the shambolic police procedures.” But the father-of-three, still in Tenerife limbo, later added: “They are still charging me with brawling, and I have appealed against it. I just want to get home.” Stephen estimates the longrunning ordeal has cost him up to £500,000 in legal fees, accommodation and living costs, as well as lost earnings. “There is no legal aid out here, so those costs alone run into 30,000 euros,” he said bitterly. “I’ve also had to pay for flights backwards and forwards for my family, and other living expenses.” The weary grandad, who runs a coach company, added: “The business has also had to take a back seat while I’ve been

out here, and it has almost ruined me.” But Stephen has “no regrets” about going to the aid of 31year-old fellow-Brit Bryan O’Connell, who was being attacked. He was also cleared of the murder charge and is thought to have left the Island already. “The whole thing was a complete fit-up from start to finish,” said Mr Johnson. “But the help and support I was given was amazing. My lawyer was absolutely fantastic.” He also paid tribute to the “massive support” received from his family and friends, some of them raising the money to post his bail quickly following his arrest in January 2008. By coincidence, the couple celebrate their 33rd wedding anniversary today (Friday), and his wife said; “We just want him back as soon as possible.”

That was despite ratings agency Moody’s decision on Tuesday to downgrade Irish debt to “junk” status. There are concerns that Ireland could end up needing a second bailout if it cannot return to borrow from private markets, as is due to happen with Greece. However, Greece is still

Page 12

waiting for the EU and IMF to agree the terms of its second rescue package, and Greek Prime Minister Georges Papandreou is warning economic reforms in the country will fail if it is not agreed soon. “The politicians are making matters worse with their delaying and foot-dragging,” Nick Parsons, head of research at National Australia Bank, told Sky News business presenter Jeff Randall. “We’re starting to see the crisis taking on another gear.” Meanwhile, Italy has become the latest eurozone nation to find itself under

the scrutiny of investors. Italy is arguably paying the price for a political elite which has failed to deal properly with the sovereign debt crisis in Greece. The Italian parliament is set to give initial approval to a wide-ranging austerity package which aims to reassure investors unnerved by the level of its debt - which is 120% of GDP. Economy minister Giulio Tremonti said the four-year plan would be coupled with proposals to sell stakes in state-owned companies. “We must begin a process of privatisation once the cri-

sis period, which has blocked everything, is over,” Mr Tremonti said. On Friday, the EU will publish results of stress tests on Europe’s embattled banks. The European Banking Authority, the EU’s Londonbased regulator for the financial sector, has carried out assessments on 91 institutions “to assess the resilience of European banks to severe shocks”. If the tests show low levels of capital held by the banks, a “long-lasting lending crunch is a likely conclusion”, warned Barclays Capital analysts.

Hacking: Now Coulson’s NOTW deputy arrested A FORMER deputy editor of the News Of The World (NOTW) has been arrested by police investigating alleged phone hacking. Detectives are understood to have swooped at the home of Neil Wallis, 60, in west London. A Scotland Yard spokesman said a man was taken for questioning in the early hours of Thursday on suspicion of conspiring to intercept communications. Mr Wallis joined the NOTW as deputy editor in 2003, and served under editor Andy Coulson, who was arrested by detectives last week. He became executive editor of the Sunday tabloid in 2007, the same year Mr Coulson left. Mr Wallis was previously deputy editor at The Sun and editor of The People. After leaving newspapers in 2009 he started working for entertainment PR firm the Outside Organisation. He is a former member of the Editors’ Code of Practice Committee, whose guidelines for journalists are enforced by self-regulatory body the Press Complaints Commission (PCC), and of the PCC itself. The PCC has lately been accused by MPs of being inca-

pable of tackling serious wrongdoing by journalists. The arrest is part of Operation Weeting - the probe into mobile interceptions made by News International journalists. It is the ninth arrest Scotland Yard has made since the investigation was launched and came as Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg insisted Rupert Murdoch must allow himself to be questioned by MPs over the scandal. Meanwhile, detectives have told a cousin of Jean Charles de Menezes his number was found on the phone hacking list of a News of the World private investigator. Other people connected to the young Brazilian shot dead by police marksmen at Stockwell Tube station in 2005 fear they too may have been targeted. Relatives, campaigners and members of the family’s legal team have given police their phone numbers so officers can check whether they were victims of hacking. Glamour model Abi Titmuss has joined a number of other celebrities taking legal action against News International, the Sunday tabloid’s publisher.

Five men killed in an ‘illegal vodka’ blast FIVE MEN have been killed after a huge fireball ripped through an industrial building in Lincolnshire - with reports it was being used illegally for making vodka. Firefighters found the victims inside a building in Broadfield Lane Industrial Estate, Boston, after an explosion heard up to five miles away. One man was seen running from the industrial unit with his clothing on fire. Neighbours have claimed the group - understood to be migrant workers - were running an illegal distillery. Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue area manager Steve Moore said: “The first crews arrived and found a very, very hot fire and one casualty outside the building suffering from burns.

“It was a very hot, very intensive fire, so much so that the steel roller-shutters were buckled.” The fire service has not confirmed the cause of the blaze, but said the intensity of the fire and the fact it lasted for a short period of time would suggest there was “some form of accelerant”. Detectives have confirmed chemicals were found inside the lock-up, but would not say what they were. Lincolnshire Fire Service also said it is still unclear whether there was an explosion or a ferocious fire. Several neighbours made frantic 999 calls as thick, black smoke was seen rising from the scene after 7pm on Wednesday. Firefighters had to cut through the 30ft by 15ft building with special equipment before finding the five bodies inside.

Ian Nuttall, who lives 200 yards from the area, said: “It is quite well known that those kind of people are carrying out vodka operations and such like.” Earlier this year, raids by HM Revenue and Customs, police and Lincolnshire trading standards seized goods including fake vodka from six international stores in the town. HMRC said forensic testing of the counterfeit alcohol, seized in March, showed it contained chemicals often unsafe for public consumption. Police press officer Nerys McGarry said there would be a fingertip search of the unit. The survivor was first taken to the town’s Pilgrim Hospital and later transferred to the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham. Detectives are refusing to be drawn on the identities of

the dead men, including their ages and nationalities. Cases of large-scale brewing and distilling operations

in the UK are rare but not unheard of. In June a counterfeit wine scam was uncovered after a

piece of chewing gum was found in a bottle of rose bought at a Liverpool offlicence.

Footie club selling earliest rules THE EARLIEST rules that led to football as we know it today are going under the hammer at Sotheby’s for an estimated price of between £800,000 and £1.2m. They are being sold by the world’s oldest football club, Sheffield FC, which was set up in 1857, a year before the rules came into play officially. The lot includes both the original handwritten draft rules (1858) and the only known surviving copy of the printed Rules, Regulations, & Laws of the Sheffield FootBall Club (1859). Before that date, organised football was exclusively played within Britain’s public schools and universities according to widely varying

Page 14

sets of rules but, after 1858, football clubs joined together to agree a structure over the following 20 years that was to become what the game is today. The code was built on earlier football rules (mainly from Cambridge University and the public schools) and expanded to encourage a passing game played with the feet, and included the free kick, throwin, goal kick, restrictions on handling the ball, and the banning of “hacking or tripping”. The early success of Sheffield FC encouraged the development of other football clubs in the region playing by the rules agreed by Sheffield, and the rapid development of the world’s first football culture. Sheffield v Hallam FC in December 1860 is the first recorded inter-club football

match while the first interclub competition, the Youdan Cup, was fought out in 1867 in Sheffield, by Sheffield Rules. The archive documents of Sheffield FC’s earliest years provides a fascinating insight into British sporting and social history, the auction house has said. Chairman of Sheffield Football Club, Richard Tims says the money raised from the sale will go toward developing the club’s future. “The sale of this remarkable piece of sporting history will allow Sheffield Football Club to develop its facilities and secure its future as the home of grass-roots football. “The club is incredibly proud of its long history, and it is fitting that the club has until now provided a home for the oldest recorded rules of club football.”

The twit twoo who flew into a window AN OWL that crashed into the window of a house left a near perfect imprint on the glass. The imprint - complete with eyes, beak and feathers - was found by Sally Arnold on her bedroom window at her home in Kendal, Cumbria. “Our first concern was for the welfare of what we suspected was an owl and we opened up the window to check if it was still around,” Mrs Arnold said. “Fortunately, there was no sign of the bird and we can only assume that it had flown away probably suffering from a headache.” The silhouette was left by the bird’s “powder down” - a substance protecting grow-

ing feathers. Experts from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) confirmed it was most likely to be a tawny owl because of its size and shape and the fact that they appear in gardens more regularly than others. Val Osborne, head of the RSPB’s wildlife inquiries team, said: “We don’t very often see an imprint of a bird that’s flown into a window that’s this clear and where it’s pretty obvious exactly what kind of bird it is. “This would have been very uncomfortable for the bird but thankfully it looks like it survived as Mr and Mrs Arnold couldn’t find it anywhere close by. “Sadly, many birds aren’t so lucky.”

Crime stats: UK burglaries have risen by further 14% BURGLARIES have risen by 14% in the last year but overall crime has remained stable, the latest figures from the British Crime Survey show. The increase followed a 9% fall in burglaries the previous year. Overall, there were an estimated 9.6 million crimes in 2010/11, compared with 9.5 million the year before, according to the survey figures for England and Wales. The survey is based on interviews with tens of thousands of people in more than 45,000 households. Separate figures showed the number of crimes recorded by police fell slightly - down 4% to 4.2 million - compared with 4.3 million in 2009/10. Knife crime recorded by police fell by 3% to 32,714 incidents, while serious sexual offences rose by 4% to 45,326 - 11% higher than in 2008/9. The survey found the number of thefts of unattended mobiles, wallets and purses from pubs and household property increased by 10%. The BCS report said there had been an easing of the falling levels of crime after “sustained reductions” since

Page 16

the mid-1990s. Crime and Security Minister James Brokenshire said: “We have consistently argued that crime is too high and that is why our policing reforms are so urgently needed. “Everyone has the right to feel safe in their home and local community. “We want to make the police more accountable to the public they serve and ensure that local policing priorities are focused on what local people want, not on what central government thinks they want. “We are placing power back in the hands of the people, giving them a proper say in how their local area is policed through elected Police and Crime Commissioners. After years of falling crime, these figures show the further progress people want it now at risk and there are some worrying signs. “We have introduced the first ever nationwide street level crime maps which, along with regular beat meetings, mean the public can hold their local force to account not just every four years but day in and day out.”

England mascot knifed to death in Zante, Greece Friends of a former England football mascot stabbed to death on a Greek island have paid tribute to the “one in a million” teenager. Robert Sebbage, 18, died in the early hours of Wednesday after an argument started with taxi drivers at the Lagana resort on Zakynthos also known as Zante. Two Greek drivers have been arrested and four other Britons were treated in hospital for injuries not thought to be life-threatening. In 2007, Mr Sebbage, from Tadley, near Basingstoke, Hampshire, was chosen to be a mascot for the England team in a friendly against Brazil at the new Wembley Stadium and posed for photos next to David Beckham. Aged 14 at the time, he was picked by the Rays of Sunshine charity because he suffered from a bowel disorder called eosinophilic colitis and gut dysmotility. The condition meant he had

to spend much of his life in pain and led to him having part of his intestine removed. In his letter to the charity asking to be the mascot, Mr Sebbage wrote: “I love football; my life has always revolved around it. “I used to play every day at school and was once good enough to have trials at county level. “Playing football made me feel alive. I feel angry, frustrated and depressed that I can no longer take part in

the one thing I love. “However, I will never give up on supporting England. It would be a real dream come true for me just to wear the England kit and walk out of that tunnel as a mascot for my team.” One Greek news website said Mr Sebbage had been with friends outside a nightclub when an argument started with the taxi drivers. Reports have said the incident followed a laser pen being aimed at the drivers.

The two suspects are due to appear before a magistrate on the Greek island later. A 21-year-old is facing a murder charge and his 25year-old colleague is charged with complicity to commit murder. Friends have created a tribute page to Mr Sebbage on Facebook. One friend, Chloe Prince, wrote: “one of the most genuine lads I have ever met! such a lovely boy, you’ll never be forgotten! r.i.p.”

Mumbai explosions AT LEAST 17 people have been killed and more than 130 injured in three explosions in the Indian city of Mumbai. The almost simultaneous blasts rocked India’s busy financial capital during rush hour. Officials have described it as another terror attack on the city which was hit by Pakistan-based militants in 2008. India’s home minister Palaniappan Chidambaram said they believe “it was a coordinated attack by terrorists”. “According to reports from the Mumbai Police, 17 persons have died and another 133 persons are injured,” the ministry said. One blast occurred at the Opera House, a tourist des-

tination in south Mumbai near to the scene of the bloody rampage three years ago, in which 166 people were killed. Another was in the crowded central neighbourhood of Dadar and a third blast, also in south Mumbai, was at the Zaveri Bazaar, in the coastal city’s diamond hub. Television footage shows dozens of armed police at the bomb scenes and at least one car with its windows shattered. Blood-covered bodies lay in the streets as people carry the wounded to taxis. Crowds have gathered in the blast areas as police question witnesses and bomb squads inspect vehicles searching for clues and other explosives. Eyewitnesses near the Opera House said police have cordoned off the blast site and sent in sniffer dogs to

examine the area while ambulances and firefighters stand by. The explosions happened around 7pm, when all the neighbourhoods would have been packed with office workers and commuters. The attack in November 2008, which targeted two luxury hotels, a Jewish centre and a busy train station, was blamed on the Pakistanbased Lashkar-e-Taiba group. The 60-hour siege escalated tensions between the nuclear-armed rivals and prompted them to suspend peace talks. However, the talks have recently resumed. Pakistan’s government has expressed distress over the loss of lives and injuries soon after today’s blasts were reported. The US president has condemned the “outrageous

attacks”, saying his thoughts and prayers are with the wounded and those who have lost loved ones. “The US government continues to monitor the situation, including the safety and security of our citizens,” said Barack Obama. “India is a close friend and partner of the United States. The American people will stand with the Indian people in times of trial, and we will offer support to India’s efforts to bring the perpetrators of these terrible crimes to justice.” Foreign Secretary William Hague called the attacks “deplorable acts of terrorism” and said the UK stands firmly with India in face of such atrocities. A Foreign Office consular team is already in Mumbai to provide support to any British national caught up in the attacks, he added.

We have entertainment hosted by Keith Christie, with Ian Anderson, Scott Bateman, Steve and Luke Towler, Heather’s Fattitude Show and Alfie B. Free buffet, a charity raffle and good company on the agenda On Saturday (30th), the venue is the Top Square on Golf del Sur, with a variety of acts, including Jo Cassidy, Robbie Dominic, Aidy Evans, Jan Munroe, Colin Stevens and more to be confirmed. And on 26th August, we will be back at Restaurant Maria, Golf del Sur, for an end-of-summer BBQ and salad buffet. Ticket details etc, to follow. Revised adoption procedures. Following some confusion, we are clarifying the situation. Our policy is to ask for a minimum 70-euro donation for an adopted dog, which is paid direct to Hospivet Sur on collection of your new pet, which will be chipped, vaccinated with anti-rabies and V7 vaccine, and issued with a passport. From this sum, a small proportion is used to reduce our debt with Hospivet. If your pet has already been vaccinated, or chipped, we still charge the full amount, which means a larger sum is paid off our account. This is in line with other refuges, who charge an adoption fee. Hospivet also offer flea and worm treatments from 11 euros for a month’s cover of Advocate, and will discuss neutering and spaying options with you. We highly recommend this surgery, which works tirelessly for Live Arico at hugely-discounted rates, and we cannot praise their dedication to our animals enough. Casualty – Pascal’s Wager 9.00pm, BBC1 Anita Dobson and Andrew Sachs star as a couple terrorised by a drug addict in Casualty – Pascal’s Wager. Rachel and Mendel run a pharmacy and are being terrorised by a local heroin addict who is desperate for fixes for himself and his pregnant girlfriend. When the addict comes into the chemist for methadone, Mendel stands up to him and is stabbed for his troubles. Deciding enough is enough Rachel adds a mysterious substance to the

methadone, with unforeseen consequences that are revealed later. Meanwhile, Dylan offers sick street girl Becca a place to stay for the night but finds himself in serious trouble when Jordan finds out she’s only 15. 9pm, ITV Jason Manford hosts a new stand-up comedy competition which sees ten comics competing for a £100,000 prize, their own DVD and the chance to headline a nationwide tour. The comedians – a mixture of unknowns and those who have experience on the circuit – are all hoping to become the next stand-up superstar. Over six weeks, the wannabes will be sent to all corners of the country and

Page 28

10:00pm ........................BBC News

given various challenges, with the winners of the tasks deciding the running order for that week’s gig. Cameras will follow the group to see how they cope with the pressure and to record their performances, which will take place in some unusual venues to potentially raucous crowds. The series starts in Liverpool, where the comedians are sent out to get to know the city and its people

so they can write five minutes of brand new material to perform at a nerve wracking gig in front of an all-female audience. They then face a panel of comedian Alan Davies, comedy critic Kate Copstick and this week’s guest judge, Liverpool legend Jimmy Tarbuck. The panel will decide who has made the cut for the next gig and which one of them is going home.

But having found out that Bel will be producer, his pride burns. Matters are compounded when Freddie and Bel meet Hector Madden, the charismatic new presenter of the programme, to whom Bel is irresistibly attracted. As The Hour team is assembled, Freddie will be forced to decide where his priorities lie. What’s more, he’ll find a vital clue in the investigation of the academic’s death and will find himself thrust deep into a darker tragedy.

The Corrie Years 7.30pm, ITV1 ITV1 presents a brand new three-part documentary series exploring the Coronation Street storylines which created such an impact that they made front page news in the real world. The programmes are narrated by David Morrissey and include interviews from former and current cast members, including William Roache, Anne Kirkbride and Eileen Mayers. The first episode – The Headline Makers – looks at several major storylines, including the

Page 32

Weatherfield One plot, in which Deirdre Rachid was jailed for crimes she did not commit after falling for a conman. Her prison sentence sparked a media frenzy and even MPs discussed the miscarriage of justice. The programme also reveals previously unseen footage from the 1963 storyline covering Sheila Birtles’s attempted suicide. When the shocking original scenes were leaked to the newspapers, they had to be cut on the day of broadcast due to the ensuing controversy.

There is a look at SarahLouise Platt’s teenage pregnancy storyline, which was praised by government ministers for raising the issue. Plus the show covers Deirdre Barlow’s affair with Mike Baldwin, which inspired many column inches and public polls on Deirdre’s dilemma, and Sally Webster’s devastating breast cancer diagnosis, which she revealed to her husband Kevin as he was about to tell her that he was leaving her for another woman.

Tony Marchant’s new drama for CBBC Production has started on Postcode – a contemporary, urban drama reflecting the realities of life for young people in Britain today. This new series will transmit later in the year on CBBC. BAFTA-winning playwright Tony Marchant (Holding On, The Mark Of Cain, Garrow’s Law) has put pen to paper for this specially-commissioned, three-part drama, which will be filmed entire-

ly on location in South London. Set in a neighbourhood in transition – a cosmopolitan melting pot where kids from wellheeled families live side-byside with asylum seekers, Postcode will chart the ups and downs of a diverse set of characters as they rub shoulders on a daily basis. Starring new talent Roger Nsengiyumva, Manpreet Bambra, Robert Eades and

Sebastian Nanena and featuring Yusra Warsama (Stolen), Amanda Abbington (Case Histories) and Shaun Dooley (South Riding, Five Days), Postcode will follow the friendships and frustrations among a group of young people – from backgrounds as diverse as Somalian, Polish, Pakistani and Irish – who share a postcode but very little else. With some

families facing deportation and others worrying about maintaining their family lifestyle, on the surface they have little in common. But united by football, music and the laws of the street, the youngsters have to find a way to get along. Executive producer Elaine Sperber says: “Tony Marchant’s Postcode is a very modern drama about

the challenges of breaking down barriers to friendship and a sense of community in today’s urban Britain. It deals with some of the issues and problems that kids face in the 21st century in a compelling but lifeaffirming way.” Nigel Pickard, CEO Zodiak MEAA/UK Family and Kids, says: “This is the first time Tony has tackled these big themes in a drama specifically targeted at young

people and I’m delighted to announce the start of filming.” Sue Nott, executive producer for CBBC, added: “Postcode offers the CBBC audience a bold look at contemporary Britain seen through the eyes of young people. It deals with the reality of life faced by them on a daily basis, as their neighbourhoods evolve and change.”

BELIEVE it or not, there was a time when buying a television was a simple process. Walk into the shop, find one that has a nice picture, take it home, plug in the ariel - and away you go! Then came the Nineties, and the stereo video recorder, satellite TV and DVD. So the whole process was made harder, it seemed, to watch something on screen. The advantage of the scart lead then came into the loop. The amount of times I have had to go to a family member’s house because they have just had Sky TV set up and have no idea how to record a show on the video. It still amazes me that quite a few people have yet to record a TV show on video and watch satellite on Channel 8. Using a scart lead takes the worry out of it all, and it’s so simple. No matter whether it’s a video, DVD player or satellite, the same simple rule is applied to hook into a television: scart lead from box to TV… and that’s it! I was big into home cinema in the late Nineties and had boxes for different sounds, with leads trailing the floors to surround-sound speakers and into the back of a powerful amplifier. The leads at that time cost a fortune because I needed so many. But today, it’s a lot simpler and cheaper. Don’t worry, I’m not going to get us all lost in technology, so no matter what the make or model, let’s just take one flatscreen TV ready for HD. I don’t know anyone with a video recorder these days, so with Sky+ or cable companies,

you can record straight from the box. It’s all very simple and foolproof. But it seems that the majority of people are showing proof of being fools. Last time I was back home in Northern Ireland, everyone had a flat-screen HD TV set and a box under it capable of sending HD picture to the screen. But all of them were using a scart lead! This lead does not send a digital signal, so why use it? The lead you need is called an HDMI. And it does not matter what it stands for because it is a straightforward digital lead. When upgrading to HD TV, neither Sky nor Virgin tell customers this, or supply them with the proper HDMI connection. And I can’t understand why they don’t. They cost just pennies, really. But try buying one in the usual electrical superstores, and asking for HDMI. You will be well conned with the price and information. Again, to keep it simple, digital is digital is digital. The salesperson will tell you that in order to get the best picture, you should go for the most expensive lead you can. He will also say the lead should be at least 20% of the price of your TV! But do NO fall for that old line. Just this week, I was talking to friend who had bought a new flat-screen, HD internet TV set - all hooked into Sky HD. He actually bought the set from a home-cinema specialist. And he was very proud of the fact that he took his time and researched over quite a few months for the set he wanted. As a joke, I said: “Bet you have

no HDMI lead.” My jaw hit the ground when he replied: “Not only do I have one but two, each costing 150 quid.” I could not believe what I was hearing. Two leads which were correct for HD and BluRay DVD player. Both at a total of £300! The TV cost only £450! He explained that they were the best in the market and that they would cost even more had he bought them online, etc. I called him a fool and tried to explain why. But it’s hard to get a point across on the phone and anyway, he was happy and seemed to think he’d gotten really good value. I can tell you now that no matter who and where you are, you are still being fooled if you’re sold an HDMI lead costing over a tenner, Whether it costs a euro or a million, I promise you will see no difference in the picture, EVER! You can Google all you want and see for yourself the websites selling these little pieces of wire for 1,500 euros, with a load of false information to make them look so good. So please take my advice and believe that you can get an HDMI lead for three euros in the shops. And when you take it home and plug it in, it will either work or not. If not, get a replacement. But when does work, I can promise you one thing: you will be smiling from ear to ear in the knowledge that you are getting exactly the same digital picture for pennies for which others have paid hundreds. M & S making a brief profit!

Cheques not being signed off just yet ACCORDING to the consumer’s champion Which? The humble cheque has been given a reprieve, which is a victory for consumers, says Which?

THREE pairs of Brazilian-cut knickers for a tenner have proved to be a boon for Marks & Spencer, who have sold half-amillion pairs in three months. That’s an impressive 64% improvement on last year, and swimming costumes, up 50%, have been diving out the window! Their £49.50 maxi-dresses have also proved popular, but these three items apart, the M & S clothing departments have not been wearing too well.

The company say that likefor-like sales in their clothing division were flat over the last quarter, against City expectations of a 1% increase. Prices have risen because of rising commodity costs, which means the number of individual garments sold were down on the same period last year. Overall, though, the UK’s largest clothing retailer said sales in stores open for at least a year rose 1.7% in the second period. And food sales were up 3.3% as more customers took advantage of “dine in” offers, plus the 500 new products launched during the quarter.

As The Payments Council announces that plans to phase out cheques by 2018 have been scrapped, Which? chief executive, Peter Vicary-Smith says: “This is great news for the millions of people who regularly use cheques. Whilst it may be more convenient for the banks to process other forms of payments, it’s not so easy for their customers. “To announce a timetable for the abolition of cheques before any suitable alternatives had been put in place was never a good idea. This is a victory for common sense.” Interestingly *Which? Had

questioned 1311 members of the general public in an online omnibus survey in December 2010 and found that: - 50% of people had written

a cheque in the last month - 76% had written one in the last year - Two in five people (41%) used a cheque to pay a tradesman or supplier

- One in five (23%) had sent one to a friend or relative as a present - One in eight (14%) paid by cheque for school costs such as meals and outings

Take control with your own board of directors DESIGNERS looking for new ideas for clients often compile a “mood board”, which gives them new direction and a real feel for their task. Mood boards are basically collages of items such as photographs, sketches, clippings, fabric swatches and colour samples. They can be actual or virtual and are used by many different types of designers, such as those in fashion and interior design. A decorating mood board often contains magazine clippings of furnishings which inspire the design concept. Sketches and a floor plan are also usually included

on the board. Paint chips and other colour swatches are also featured on a decorating mood board, so the client can take a look and decide whether he or she likes the main design concepts represented on the board. A fashion mood board usually has sketches of garments as its main focus, and may also have magazine clippings or other sketches of what inspired that particular designer. It could have pictures of ocean waves for the design of a dark-blue silk gown, while trimming details and ribbon could also be featured on a fashion mood board. There is no reason why you cannot create your own

mood board at home. It stimulates the imagination, and it can also help you formulate ideas when you are designing a new room, or simply updating an old one It is an ideal way to tap into your personal style and will speed up your decision-making process, as well as preventing shopping mistakes. Compiling a mood board can be quite a lengthy task, but give yourself a deadline or you will become submersed in the project and could lose your way. And remember that designing a board and translating it into the finished room product are two completely different things. So to get an inkling of how your ideas will work, take some elements from the

board into the room you are redesigning. Drape pieces of fabric on furniture, pin up wallpaper samples or even paint a few poster boards and fix them to a wall. This should give you a valuable insight and point you in the right direction, or persuade you to have a rethink. A mood board often works best on a wall because it serves as a reference point and also allows editing as your project progresses. Another good pointer is to sketch a floor plan showing some of your favourite furniture, flooring and/or wallpaper. Finally, after laying out your inspirational items, pin all the elements to your mood board to get an idea of how they will interact.

DIY ‘requires preparation’ DIY AND home improvement enthusiasts should have a firm idea of their intentions before they start upgrading their property, according to one expert.

Page 38

George Bond, interior designer and former television personality on Better Homes with Carol Vorderman, noted a lot of people begin the process with little idea of how they intend their home’s overall decor to turn out. Instead, samples from paints or kitchen and bathroom tiles should be put on a

colour board, so individuals have a better knowledge of how their renovation will look before they commence work, he declared. Furthermore, a lot of people fail to “[apply] just a bit of common sense” and do not measure their rooms or purchases, which results in them buying the wrong items.

“Prior preparation, prepare, do your homework and it pays off,” Mr Bond concluded. This follows a survey from Safestore, which found that 78 per cent of respondents believe it is a wiser idea to refurbish their existing premises than to move in the current housing market. Source Wickes.

RHS Garden Photo competition is on No weeding is needed in these vertical gardens THE Americans believe they have just “invented” vertical gardening, but it has actually been around in Europe for many years.

THE UK organisation, RHS like to support and encourage great garden photography. Whether you’re a photography enthusiast, a garden enthusiast or new to both, they would love you to share your images with them. Perhaps you would like to share a view of your own garden, a garden you’ve visited or a particular plant that catches your eye. There are also categories for people working in their gardens, the wildlife living in them and the seasons that affect them. The competition is open to amateur and professional photographers worldwide, with six categories for adults and two for children and young people. The top adult prize is £1000 and the title of RHS Photographer of the Year, while younger photographers can battle it out for a digital camera and the chance to be named RHS Young Photographer of the Year. Closing date for receipt of all entries is 31st August 2011 Categories include:Plant portraits Photos that show the plant, tree or shrub as a whole or

near whole entity; for example a shot that includes the petals, stem and leaves of a flower giving a sense of the plant and its immediate environment. Abstracts and details This could be a close-up of a plant, a detail of a tree or a shadow on a lawn.

Gardens through the seasons Photos of gardens illustrating the different seasons. This could be a view from a window, a sweeping panorama, one of the RHS gardens or a snow scene. Wildlife in the garden Photos of insects, birds and creatures found wild in the

garden throughout the year. Gardeners Photos of gardeners or of people enjoying a garden. Grow your own This category covers fruit and vegetables which have been grown in a garden, allotment or even in a pot on a windowsill, from individual studies to panoramic views. RHS Young Photographer of the Year These categories are especially for children and young people aged under 18. It is from these submissions that the RHS Young Photographer of the Year will be chosen: Young Photographer (age 1117) A maximum of five photos can be entered. They can be from any of the categories above. Children’s Photograph (under 11) A maximum of five photos can be entered on anything that interests you in your garden. The Medici Cards Award The Medici Cards Award will be decided from all competition entries, and will be presented to the photographer who submits the image best suited for reproduction as a greetings card.

As the name suggests, plants and vegetables grow upwards on trellis-work attached to homemade stands, freestanding walls or those attached to buildings, and they can even grow out of the brickwork. It appears to be the perfect solution to residents in Tenerife, who love gardening but have to make do with a small patio or verandah, where they can grow their own tomatoes or runnerbeans, say. French botanist Patrick Blanc is acknowledged as creating the “large green walls concept”, which is known as the vertical garden. But these are spectacular, art-form displays which bear no relevance to household gardens or patios. For most home gardeners the concept isn’t new because we have been staking tomato plants and fruit trees forever, and we’ve always trained creepers to grow over undesirable fences to smarten them up. Yet the thinking behind vertical gardens still seems radical. That’s because all our other vertical gardening exploits until now focused on plants and seeds being grounded in the soil. But the vertical gardens have absolutely no dependency on the ground. In fact,

they exist quite separately from soil, and do so comfortably. Traditional methods of horticulture are hardly a consideration for apartmentdwellers over here, so we must diversify a little and learn some new ways of doing things if we want our own home-grown veg to hand. The basics of a DIY vertical garden include a metal frame for longevity, although treated wood can also outlast the vigour of running water. You will also need a backboard to protect the actual wall, or to allow the plants to scale up, and while PVC sheets are the preferred option, they can be substituted with fine, rigid wire mesh (preferably stainless steel). A holding sheet is also required, and a thick sheet of felt will give the best results, although a tough hessian can also work well. The frame is basically a support for the vertical garden. On it, the backboard is glued fastened or riveted, and then the holding sheet is stapled on top of that. No soil is used for plant growth. The plants or seeds are neatly embedded and suspended into the felt, which becomes its growing medium - provided, of course, that the felt is watered regularly. Some of my readers may even have experimented with this unusual form of gardening, and I’d love you to tell me all about the pitfalls, your success rate and how you went about setting it up. And if you have pictures of your vertical gardens, so much the better.

How to strengthen fragile fingernails YOUR nails often reflect the state of your health, so take a closer look at what you are eating – and work out whether you have enough vitamins and minerals. Once you do, there are further things to help keep your nails stronger and healthier, and here are some tips: Brittle breakaways Cause: The main villain is lack of moisture. Each time you put your hands in water, the keratin (outer layer of skin) swells and shrinks when dry, which weakens the bonds that hold up the nail matrix. What to do *Soak for 10 minutes at night in baby oil or olive oil *Keep nails short *If a nail starts to break, cut it Chewed to the quick Cause: Stress, habit, nervousness What to do *When you get the urge to bite, do something else with your hands (exercises, etc) *A regular manicure is a good incentive *Keep cuticles hydrated and tidy Cracked-up, dented, spotty Cause: Injury to the nail matrix, and lunula (the crescentshaped, whitish area) What to do *Grow them out. It takes 2-6 months so in the meantime, keep clipping Split, sore cuticles Cause: Picking, biting, dryness,

or over-zealous clipping, which leads to tougher, more unmanageable cuticles What to do *Massage regularly with a nourishing cream or oil to keep moisturised *Soak hands in warm water for a few minutes before pushing cuticles back to soften them *Push back gently with an orange stick Peeling weaklings Cause: Illness, over-use of harsh detergents, nail glue and acetone, faulty filing, too much exposure to water What to do *Wear rubber gloves for

chores. *Use oil-based polish removers. *Try a soft-grain nail file and leave the sides alone *Don’t buff *Keep hands out of very hot water *Massage hand cream or hot almond oil into cuticles and nail after washing hands, or at bedtime These tips can help a lot, but in case you do not have the materials, you are not sure which ones to buy, or have any further questions, do not hesitate to ask your nail technician’s opinion, I am sure she will be able to suggest some further options.

Dear Christine, I knew my husband was bisexual when I married him because he was up-front about it from the start. Six years and two children later, though, I’m worried that he’s gone back to his old ways. He’s started deleting his texts, he goes out without me far more, and he’s generally more secretive. Also, we were planning on going back to live in England, but he doesn’t want to any more. He comes up with plenty of reasons for staying here, but none was an issue a few months ago. What do you think I should do? Kitty

Dear Kitty, Being involved with a bisexual isn’t for everyone. There’s not only competition from both sexes but also the risk of feeling that they are missing out if they stick to one sex. Not that it’s inevitable they’ll act upon that feeling. Indeed, lots of bisexuals stay loyal to one person. It depends upon the strength of the relationship, as well as their strength of will. Although you have no proof that your man’s cheating, your instincts are telling you that something is wrong. Whether or not he’s having an affair, though, only he can say. It may easily be something else, such as him feeling guilty about not now wanting to move to England. You can find out what’s wrong only if you ask him directly, and since he was so honest and open when you first met, I have a feeling he will be now. And when you know what’s wrong, you can begin working on how to put things right again, even if that involves going your separate ways. All the very best, Christine Dear Christine, I’m 54, divorced and attracted to the handsome Spanish tutor who is teach-

ing me Spanish at my home two evenings a week. I must have made my feelings clear because two months ago he began texting me to say how much he fancied me. Since then, we’ve spent time at the end of each lesson kissing and caressing. I really love him, but he’s married and this makes me feel terrible. I’ve never slept with him but I still feel guilty and hate myself for my behaviour. I’ve always been one to think of other people’s feelings, and, because I didn’t turn him away when he first made advances, I feel really bad about what I’m doing to his wife. I’m afraid to stop having lessons with him because I need to learn Spanish for the work I do (I’m self-employed). Also, my son will get suspicious if I suddenly stop lessons. Please help. Jean

Dear Jean Yes, this guy fancies you; you fancy him back and you have a bit of a kiss and cuddle, but is that love? Can living in “if only” ever be love? Can a relationship with a married man who is having a bit of excitement on the side be called love? The answer is a resounding no, to all three. For love to be real, it has to be mutual and carried out openly by both parties, with honest expressions of caring and valuing. Both parties must wish it to be a committed lifelong relationship. As it is, you know there’s no future in this, so I can only recommend that you tell this guy it has to stop. If you live with your son, you and the Spaniard should agree on a way forward, such as him saying he’s no longer available to coach you. If you think he might make life difficult, you could find someone else to teach you and present him with a fait accompli. You could tell your son

that you’ve learned all you can from him and now you need greater input in the subject, or simply that you’ve found someone better and cheaper. Your only other option is to carry on with this painful and damaging half-way house ‘relationship’ which will take you nowhere at all and only increase your sense of guilt and self-disgust. Good luck. Christine Dear Christine, My fiancé is a great singer and we’ve come to Tenerife for him to work in the cabaret bars. I think he loves his music more than he loves me, though. I’m 29 and desperate to have kids, but he doesn’t want them for 10 years, and it’s possible I’ll be too old by then. I do love him, but don’t want to risk my chance of having a family. I feel like it’s me who’s giving up everything for him and his career. What do you think? Miss M

Dear Miss M, So your boyfriend doesn’t want kids until it may be too late? So staying with him would mean you may have to give up everything for the sake of his career, which he seems to value more highly than you? I’m sorry to be so blunt, but while you stick with this guy for the aspects of the relationship you do enjoy, aren’t you making sure you’re not free to find someone who wants the same things as you do out of life? There are plenty of guys in your age bracket who want a wife and family, who will value you and share your desires. Be grateful for the good times you and your fiancé have had together, then go your separate ways. Or you could continue to put your life on hold - the choice is yours. I wish you happiness and the courage to find it Christine

Christine Craggs-Hinton is the author of 18 self-help books, including ‘Natural Treatments for Arthritis’, ‘Coping with Varicose Veins’ and ‘Living with Fibromyalgia’. Let yoga empty your mind of all that pain YOGA, which has its origins in India, has been described as a means of ridding the body of suffering, pain and sorrow by mastering what disturbs one’s peace and harmony. The earliest evidence of the art was the discovery of a yoga position engraved on seals from 3000BC. In the 1920s, western scientists went to India to test various yogi masters under laboratory conditions. They recorded amazing physical feats and powers; some yogis can slow or stop their breath and heartbeat, and control pain enough to lie on a bed of nails. When yoga moved to the west as a spiritual discipline, it was adapted for many people to use for an alternative style of exercise. As well as meditation discipline and moral philosophy to reach a state of peace and harmony, yoga practice focuses on a series of wellstudied static and stretching exercises, and breathing practices. On a physical level, yoga is an excellent stress-buster, because the science of

15 July 2011 - 21 July 2011

yoga, or yoga psychology, realises that the largest form of stress is our mind. The effects of yoga poses, breathing exercises, meditation and dietary disciplines help change poor mental and emotional habits which cause stress in our body. These stress responses are our fight or flight mechanisms, designed originally to help us survive the dangers of primitive life. We still have them today, but they are more likely to be released when a car pulls out in front of us, or we wonder where the money for the next month’s rent is coming from. The fight or flight syndrome releases adrenaline and this changes respiration, tenses muscles and stimulates us to respond to whatever is bothering us. Most of the time it is hard to vent these feelings, and we find ourselves locked permanently in the world of tension. We all have tightened muscles somewhere clenched jaws, stiff necks, hunched shoulders or tense thighs - and these are all a result of stress responses. Yoga can help change stress patterns.

Meditation is one of the oldest relaxation techniques because quietening the mind can quieten the body. The meditative state of yoga improves our ability to observe physiological functions and their connections to our emotional states and reactions. Consistent yoga practice in its entirety - breathing, postures, diet and mental discipline - can help regulate our bodies to cope with life’s stresses and diseases. Many branches of yoga have been developed: some may be mental/spiritual ori-

entated, such as MANTRA, while NADA focuses on vibrations and radiations of life energy, using the sound of bells, drums and musical recordings to enhance health and healing processes. When looking for a teacher or a class to start learning the art, ask what kind of yoga is taught, how active it is and what kind of cool-down or meditation is included. There is a good reason for this because some teachers and their styles are more strenuous than others.

Pukka Chef will leave Sainsburys JAMIE OLIVER, the face of UK supermarket Sainsbury’s will leave at the end of year, after completing his last Christmas campaign for them. The strong partnerships has been going strong for 11 years but now both mutually agree it’s time to part company. Jamie said that it is a “good time to move on” while J Sainsbury said that he is keen to spend more time on his social projects through the Jamie Oliver foundation both in the UK and overseas. The relationship which began back in the 90’s is thought to have pocketed over £10m and Sainsburys themselves have often seen sales dramatically increase of products that the original

Justin King, Sainsbury’s chief executive, said: “Jamie has been an excellent ambassador for the Sainsbury’s brand, spearheading our goal to offer our customers fresh and tasty food, whilst maintaining strong ethical standards. In our industry, it has been one of the most successful and most mutually rewarding partnerships ever. “We wish him well and we look forward to exciting new projects in the months and years to come.”

Summer omelette with tasty herbs THE LAST thing you want to do in the heat over here is slave away at the cooker, dreaming up some exotic meals for yourself – of the family. No, what you need is something quick, cheap and cheerful, like an omelette, for example. But not just any omelette! How about a summer herb omelette, which is delicate and fluffy and really does have that taste of summer? It takes just five minutes to prepare and another five to cook (for one). You’ll need two eggs, a handful of summer herbs, such as parsley leaves and chives, and a knob of butter. And here’s how to prepare

Shires has tasty new look!

WE’VE just had the pleasure of tasting the recently-added new items on The Shires menu, which we’ll come to later in this review.

desserts on offer, which were the Chocolate Brownie Sundae, Profiteroles and Black Forest Gateau. All delicious, but it’s worth men-

tioning that the first one disappeared within minutes. The texture of the gateau base was also impressive. If you like vino with your

meal, the house wines are only 6.50 euros a bottle. Chardonnay and red Merlot are priced at 8.50 euros and Viña Sol is nine euros. Good

value! Coffee? A La Mumba and a floater with Tia Maria comes out at 3.95 euros. The superb value of the one, two or three-course set menu is always a big hit; 9.95 euros for three courses is really unavoidable.

Summing up, we were impressed by the overall meal and the friendly service, as ever, and also the spotless interior of the newlook Shires. For takeaways or for reservations, ring 922 795 184.

Firstly though, as many of our readers will know, The Shires, in the Apolo Centre, Los Cristianos, has been a popular restaurant/bar for almost 20 years. It has changed hands four times in that period, with Paul and Craig taking the helm in June 2009. Since then, they have built the business into one of the most successful hot-spots for tourists and residents alike. After a well-deserved holiday in May, they returned to inspect the refurbishment, which has given the interior “that 2011 look”, and revealed their new menu. They have kept all the old favourites from the menu, including the roasts, fish “from the grill”, chicken, pizzas, pasta and fresh salads, plus their “for the kids department”. But we decided to experience the new additions. For starters we had pate, which was smooth and rich and came with delicious home-made chutney, and the spicy wedge melt with spiced bacon. Then came The Shires “Tower Burger”, which went down a treat. But our mouths drooled over the Spicy Tomato Pasta; highly recommended! We sampled the three new

Holiday Plastic ACCESSING your funds from abroad can prove to be expensive. But it seems Halifax have spotted the gap and filled it with there ‘Clarity Card.’ It’s a credit card NOT a debit card. It won’t charge you any usage fees - whether you’re on holiday, transferring a balance, or simply getting money out. The Clarity card is Halifax’s newest credit card and has one simple interest rate of 12.9% APR representative variable, however or wherever you use it. What’s really exciting about Clarity is that there are no usage fees: - No fee to transfer a balance - No cash withdrawal fee - No fee to use it anywhere worldwide - No annual fee. In the terms and conditions the Halifax state that, “A foreign exchange fee or commission charge is applied by many credit cards to any transactions you make abroad with your card.

Typically this fee is around 3%, but with your Halifax Clarity Credit Card or Halifax Rewards Clarity Credit Card, there is no foreign exchange fee.” However, if you’re withdrawing funds abroad, “you will not be charged a fee by us (Halifax) for withdrawing cash from an ATM (cashpoint) anywhere in the world. Some ATM providers charge a fee, but this should be made clear to you at the time of withdrawal and is unfortunately outside of our control. You will still be charged interest from the date that the withdrawal is made, but unlike some credit cards which charge a higher rate of cash, you will be charged the same competitive rate as if you had made a purchase.” What exchange rate will I be charged on transactions made abroad using the Clarity Credit Card? “The exchange rate is set by Mastercard at the time that you make the transaction. Halifax do not apply any loading, fees or charges to this rate.” So it looks like Halifax’s plastic is the ideal holiday accessory.

RYANAIR are putting on several new routes from Manchester including Tenerife after dropping nine others because of airport charges two years ago. The Irish company, who will fly to 13 destinations by October, and plan to double that number within a year, believe the move will sustain about 2,000 jobs across the

North West, including those at Manchester Airport. But the airport authorities say they have had to make some concessions to win back the budget airline. So, by next summer, Ryanair will fly from Manchester to Tenerife, Madrid, Valencia, Malaga, Alicante, Barcelona (Gir), Palma, Ibiza, Murcia, Bezier, Biarritz, Bremen, Brussels, Dublin, Faro, Frankfurt, Katowice, Memmingen, Milan, Oslo, Paris, Reus, Rome, Rzeszow, Tallinn and

Tours. Ryanair fell out with Manchester Airport in 2009 when a deal for reduced airport charges for them to run an additional 28 weekly flights could not be reached. At the time the airport maintained the charges were reasonable. Michael O’Leary, chief executive of Ryanair, said a compromise had been agreed. He added: “The market has changed here and the tour operators have declined, which formed a large part of

Manchester’s business. “I think Manchester has been more keen to get us back, and we’ve learned from our mistakes last time.” Penny Coates, Manchester Airport chief, said: “We’ve seen a decline in passenger numbers over the last two or three years, particularly since the recession kicked in.” Ryanair passengers used Liverpool and Leeds airports instead, and she added: “We want those passengers flying from here again.”

do three simple things when they next go on holiday that will help benefit local people and protect the environment in their holiday destinations Thomson team members, this week had the opportunity to volunteer with the newly re-launched Project Discovery – which offers the chance to work on a sustainable tourism project abroad. In Thomson shops across the UK a number of fundraising events to raise money for The Travel Foundation took

place. Also, customers booking a holiday were advised of the best ways to protect the environment and engage with local communities at their chosen destinations. At Thomson resorts across the world swap boxes for reusable items such as arm bands, lilos, flip flops, books and sun cream are being set up so other families can find a use for them, rather than such items being thrown away. A number of events were also organised such as

candle light dinners to conserve energy, recycled fashion shows and local craft fairs and food tasting sessions to celebrate local culture. For consumers and staff alike, there is an opportunity to win a holiday to Thailand, by completing an online quiz with questions relating to how we should make holidays greener. ON THE ROAD WITH JAV Behind the Wheel Email: Jav@canarianweekly.com

Land Rover’s luxurious plug-in Range is a treat IT sounds a bit too good to be true, but we should be able to buy a Range Rover in under three years which emits less than 100g/km CO2 and averages over 80mpg. The prototype Range_e is a plug-in diesel-electric hybrid, whose scaleable technology will debut in Range Rover models in the next couple of years. It is the next green step along, following the dieselelectric hybrid to go on sale in 2013 after debuting late next year. Adding ‘plug-in’ recharge capability allows bigger batteries to be fitted, so it can go further without the diesel kicking in, as long as the driv-

er is careful on the accelerator. Land Rover quote 22 miles of engine-off ability. That’s enough for some drivers to have ‘infinite’ mpg because if they charge the batteries each night, the diesel need never start if their commute is within range. The prototype, developed partly with a Government TSB grant, is being used for trials

with the public for feedback, yet Land Rover have never before allowed outsiders to drive and rate a prototype. Despite returning 85mpg, the Range_e - their most advanced Range Rover of all can also beat the 4.4-litre Range Rover V8 diesel in a drag race. Response is better, too, as the electric motor fills the performance hole when the turbo is off-boost.

That’s because the motor has the same pulling power as a VW Golf diesel, and it is available instantly. It pays dividends at all speeds: in town, when overtaking and when cruising. This is a “full range” Range Rover which will appeal to the company’s luxury-buying customers, and it meets all Land Rover’s off-road standards as well. Land Rover say the electric drive brings off-road advantages, which their engineers are now carefully working on maximising. The parallel hybrid layout is similar to a Honda Insight. Land Rover have integrated the electric motor into the 8speed gearbox, replacing the torque converter and allowing it to run as a pure EV, a diesel, or an electric-assisted diesel. Intelligent power manage-

ment makes the call. The real feel-good mode is electriconly, city-centre running, enhanced by the luxury of the Range Rover cabin. It is a haven of peace, although there is an extra challenge because it is so quiet that refinement work is needed in new areas: tyre roar, for instance, and air-con fan noise. Obviously, it is not production-ready, and Land Rover have not yet achieved the ability of a fully-charged Chevrolet Volt to keep the engine ‘off’ even at motorway speeds. Economy-wise, 85mpg and 89g/km CO2 are exceptional for a big Range Rover with an effective 339hp power output. But use the electric power carefully and gently and you could top 100mpg, which seems an astonishing

return for such a big motor. The best petrol-electric hybrid currently on sale is the Lexus RX 450h, which averages 44.8mpg and emits 145g/km CO2. Land Rover have the potential to stun the car market by delivering the 85mpg Range Rover. Batteries are charged by a plug-in socket located next to the fuel filler, with a full charge taking about four hours. Land Rover also say the Range_e is as safe as any other Range Rover, even passing the company’s off-road, deep-water submersion tests. Okay, it’s not the finished article, but it is still pretty impressive - exceptionally economical, with zero-emissions potential and no compromises. Are we looking at the future of British luxury cars? Let’s hope so!

McLaren ‘super’ man plans eco-friendly car THE man who designed McLaren’s F1 supercar is developing a ground-breaking fuel-cell car that could revolutionise city transport. Gordon Murray’s company, Gordon Murray Design (GMD), was one of 14 British companies to receive Government funding to study low-carbon, transport solutions. Murray’s GMD company, supported by the Technology Strategy Board, have joined forces with another UK company, ACAL Energy, to speed up the development of an ecofriendly city car. They have already developed a fuel-cell engine which is more cost-effective to manufacture and more reliable than a traditional one. It is cheaper because, unlike most fuel cells, it does not require platinum, which is a highly-expensive metal. Fuel cells convert hydrogen into electrical energy, emitting only water as waste, and have

been explored by a number of manufacturers as a potential replacement for internal combustion. However, hydrogen must be stored in heavy, high-pressure

15 July 2011 - 21 July 2011

fuel tanks, which could prove problematic, and there is no UK fuel infrastructure in place. But GMD believe hydrogen could still be the future of low-carbon transport. That’s

because fuel-cell cars emit no CO2 from the tailpipe, and are far more convenient than plug-in electric cars as they can be re-fuelled in minutes. The basis for GMD’s fuel cell

car is likely to be the T.25 city car, unveiled in electric form as the T.27 recently. That car, claims Murray, is up to 80% more cost-effective to produce than average because

of its unique, but secretive, ‘iStream’ manufacturing process. Should the GMD fuel-cell car prove feasible, the Technology Strategy Board

Big-game fishermen all set to prowl from San Miguel’s Marina Match Report SIR Elton John once sang about a young man by the name of Daniel, who was flying off to Spain. Well Daniel landed on the runway of excellence last Friday with a superb display of darts for Cafe Rood. During their 5-3 win over The Pub, he hit seven 140s and a 180. Boss-man Luc also joined in the fun with a maximum of his own. Bar 180 A’s Wayne scored a 180 in a one-sided match against struggling Yelas, and Valle Vikings’ captain Geoff did the same in a 7-1 defeat at Target A. Home player Grant answered with a maximum of his own. Yet another 180 was seen at the X-Men but, sadly for the Silencio outfit, it was Leo,

A BOLD move to establish Tenerife on the Canarian circuit of major fishing tournaments is about to take place from the San Miguel Marina. A three-day qualifying event for next year’s IGFA Offshore World Championship takes place from Thursday-Saturday (21-23 July), and the marina is seen as an ideal spot to host the race Whoever wins this San Miguel-Bertram Offshore competition will earn a place in the World Championship, to be staged in Mexico in May. This highly-rated accolade includes registration, flight and accommodation for four members of the winning boat. The qualifier is already seen as one of the most important events in the Canary Islands calendar, and Bertram, the legendary

brand of fishing boats, plan to celebrate their 50th anniversary by bringing together the finest boats and crews in and beyond the archipelago. They consider conditions to be perfect in this part of the Atlantic: the Marina’s strategic position, with the influence of the trade winds and being near to the west of Tenerife, where the water is usually calm. Also, it is just 90 minutes from La Gomera and three hours from Gran Canaria and together, it all adds up to plenty of big-game fishing opportunities at the height of the season. A big plus for San Miguel Marina is that it is the only harbour in Tenerife capable of hosting an event of this type. It has the capacity and facilities, especially with its new pontoons, to accommodate boats from other islands. Apart from that, the marina, which faces Amarilla Golf, offers hotels close by to accommodate

fishermen and their families. Deep-sea fishing is one of the most exciting sports, requiring knowledge, strategy, teamwork, physical fitness, patience - and luck! The tournament, with a strict catch-and-release specification, respects the conservation and preservation of marine life. It means contestants must fish without killing all species of billfish (blue marlin, white marlin, shortbeaked marlin) and can register catches only to the minimum-established weight for tuna, swordfish and dolphin fish. So far in Tenerife, there has been one-day fishing tournaments only, focused on smaller catches. The plan now is to enhance the Island as an area for major events attracting top international boats and fishermen. At the moment, smaller tournaments are staged in La Gomera, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.

Gaffers notched their second win only by beating Bar 180 B, while Barracudarts Boys made the long trek down to Los Abrigos and went home with a point from La Central. Elsewhere, Cozy Wanderers left Toscales Ensecan with nothing to write home about, and Phoenix, pushed all the way by Target Army, just scraped a 5-3 win. Match of the day in Division 2 was at Sundowners, where opposing Marilyns’ players Lofty and Alex were on great form. The latter checked out on 133, but it was not to be, though, as the hosts ran out 5-3 victors. Knights remain in second spot after hammering the Flames, while Sunshine Bar had too much for the Playgirls. Ourplace Naturals

Grandad kneels to masterly Neil THE Showtime venue at Karting Las Americas hosted the annual end-of-season presentation for the Oasis Fm Pool League. This year, there was a special event which saw eight of the league’s top players lock horns in a one-frame shootout. The Chairman’s Invitational Super 8 saw the top six players in Division One joined by Division Two player of the year Neil and singles runnerup Graham in a thrilling contest, with Oasis Fm generously providing a 200-euro prize for the winner. There was a plethora of upsets and the final saw Neil taking on Grandad. Neil had seven-balled highly-fancied

Bungalow in the semi-finals, and he was always in control. Grandad rallied after his opponent’s fast start, but even his cagey safety play couldn’t stop the Wolves fan from triumphing. The evening was a big suc-

cess and I'd like to thank Chris Elkington for hosting, Dan and Mark and all the Showtime staff for making the event run smoothly, and Michael and Fat Nick for supplying the table. The AGM for the new sea-

son will be held at The Terrace Bar in Amarilla Golf on Tuesday, 26th July, with a sharp 8pm start. Finally, the pool league suffered a double dose of bad news last week as we lost two popular players. Last Friday night, the Rat Pack’s Keith Allen died suddenly. Keith was a fantastic host, great company and a fine pool player. News of his passing stunned all of us in the league and we send our deepest condolences to Jacqueline, his family and his team-mates. The same sentiments go to the family and friends of Andy Rollerston, who played for Bar Nauta and was always a character. He had a brief battle with cancer and his passing came as a massive surprise. We will miss them both.

Horoscopes of the week Cancer

(June 22nd-July 23rd) Don’t sit on money-making ideas you have. They’re good, so get them out into the collective and see where it leads you. You could be pleasantly surprised. Has your healthy eating and exercise regime gone out of the window recently? Get yourself back on track. LEO (July 24thAugust 23rd) Recent tension over work and money has diluted of late, and you now find yourself looking to the future with more hope and enthusiasm. You’re not out of the woods yet though, so don’t let an arrogance attitude muddy the waters for you over getting promotion. Watch your step. VIRGO (August 24thSeptember 23rd) The only way you’re going to be able to stabilise home and property affairs is if you get your thinking cap on and come up with a killer plan over the use of money or materials. Don’t be afraid to make snap decisions over your career and emotional life. Rely on your gut instincts. LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd) Communications of all kinds are going to be heated, to say the least, throughout the whole week. From an argument with a partner, to being at loggerheads with children, your nerves are going to be jangled. Work interactions won’t be much better, but try to think before you speak. SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd) Your confidence and charisma are second

Page 48

to none, and when you speak, others are entranced by what you’re saying and will be only too willing to do your bidding. Obstacles may arise mid week, but you’ll flatten them with little effort and will move on to the success you deserve. SAGITTARIUS (November 23rdDecember 21st) You work best when you feel loved and appreciated, so when a partner is enthusiastic about your next step in the career zone, your confidence will soar and you’ll do exceptionally well. Be disciplined and efficient at work and home to have a fantastically productive week all round. C A P R I C O R N (December 22ndJanuary 20th) Play your cards close to your chest over any financial dealings you’re involved in, as it could give you an advantage at the last minute if there’s something important to you at stake. Don’t let your emotions do the talking when making long term decisions. Keep heart and head apart. AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th) Career interactions bring problems with authority that affect your self esteem, if it looks like you’re not getting what you want. Keep your ego,

and your aggression, out of the equation if dealing with the hierarchy and you’ll get what you want in the long run. Watch your temper. PISCES (February 20th-March 20th) Don’t push your luck in the career zone this week as its unlikely you’ll come away smiling. You do better in the home zone, so direct your energies into being with family and friends and making plans for the future. Keep hopes and dreams within the realms of reason to attain them. ARIES (March 21stApril 20th) You begin your week full of drive energy and determination, and you’ve no intention of letting the pace falter as the week moves on. Family problems however come to the surface and need to be faced and dealt with, so be adult and take the first step to resolving issues. TAURUS (April 21stMay 21st) Worries over money are never far from your mind, so make sure home, security and cash flow matters are as watertight as they can be. It’s a time of major decisions for you, especially over affairs of the heart, so if something still doesn’t feel right, it may be time to move on. GEMINI (May 22ndJune 21st) The only way you’re going to get differences with a partner sorted out is if you adopt a better attitude to what they’re saying. They do have a point you know. Money issues come to a head on Friday when the full moon blows situations out of the water. Be prepared for conflict.
