DO YOUR BIT: WALK FOR LIFE TENERIFE’S annual Walk for Life, in aid of Breast Cancer Awareness, takes place on Sunday, amid a sea of pink. At least 2,000 women, men and children will be hot-footing it at 11am, with a fanfare from a live band, after registering at the Magma Centre, (next to the National Police Station), from 9am. Their route will take them down through Playa de las Americas to the coast and then along the seafront, ending up at the Plaza de Pescador in Los Cristianos, (the square by the port). The 4.8km walk will take an hour to 90 minutes, depending on your speed - and the crowds of wellwishers. You can register and walk for a minimum of two euros, and sponsor forms are available from the website. This colourful event brings together the municipalities of Arona and Adeje, and last year, more than 2,000 people took part, raising over 18,000 euros. Hopefully this year it will be more, despite these hard economic times.
F u l l details of the event were spelled out at a press conference yesterday (Thursday) at Hotel Villa Cortes, where Canarian Weekly were the only British Press in attendance. It was attended by
Francisco Niño in his first official engagement as Arona Mayor, and José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, Mayor of Adeje, among a host of other dignitaries. The Adeje Mayor said: “The South of the island is characterised as an area
of solidarity and thus, participating in this initiative represents our commitment to society. “At the same time, it serves as a platform to claim the importance of Spanish public health.” Francisco Niño said: “I am proud that we join two municipalities like this, and, for it to have the success it deserves, we need the cooperation of all citizens.” Walk for Life is a social
phenomenon, solidarity and emotion, which is organised every year, between Adeje and Arona, to raise funds to help fight against breast cancer. It reaffirms our commitment to all those affected by this disease. Many local businesses and individuals have made contributions to the massive raffle held at the end, and there’s even water and bananas being given out, and promotional items, for a small donation. If water is more your thing, you can join swimmingclub members from Tenerife Masters at 10am on the beach by Arona Gran Hotel. And for a four-euro donation, you can swim 800m with them across the bay to Los Cristianos. Finally, at the end of the walk, there will be entertainment, with local youngster Luke Towler performing his own personal song which he has written especially for the event. The two Mayors invited him to perform a cappella at the press conference and liked it so much that they’ve asked for the lyrics to be printed so that everyone can join in! There will be various stalls,
among them Excellent Medical Centre, who have put together a well-woman package (more details in January’s Canarian Weekly). As always, the focus is on trying to make people aware of the importance of detecting breast cancer early, and to show solidarity with those affected, and their families. Organiser Brigitte Gypen says: “We are most grateful this year for partnerships and sponsors, because we understand that times are tough for everyone. “But the signs of solidarity, optimism and hope for people affected are there more than ever. This year, there will be several new features in Walk for Life. “The walk took place for the first time in 2004 and continues to grow year after year. “Thanks to the increasing participation year after year, we can fight cancer by donating all proceeds from the event to the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) and the Association of Women Affected by Breast Cancer (Ámate).” More information is available from www. carreraporlavida.com

Primark ready to collar the market THE arrival of Primark in Tenerife, which will prove a blessing to cut-price shoppers on the Island, draws ever closer.
The Irish-based fashion chain, and a leader in textiles, has asked the Canary Islands’ Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs for a business licence for its installation and opening at the Centro Commercial Meridiano, in the centre of Santa Cruz. An announcement in the Boletín Oficial de Canarias (BOC) was published on Monday, 3rd December, and the application has been submitted for public information for a period of 15 days. Once this process is complete - on Tuesday - all that will be left to do is conduct negotiations with the locale’s managers and the refurbishment of the store, which will have a retail area of 2,608 square metres. Sources from store, which has taken the UK, Spain and the rest of Europe by storm, refused to reveal the exact date of the opening, or the number of jobs which will be created. That’s because the
company’s “trade policy” does not allow it, but we understand that Primark “expects some new chain openings in 2013”. A spokeswoman from Penneys, Dublin, Primark’s parent company, stated that ‘Primark Tiendas S.L.U (the name in which the licence has been submitted) is part of the Primark family. She would however “not pass further comment until all documentation has been signed off by the Directors.” This will be sweet music to the ears of many Islanders, who are happy to fly off to Gran Canaria regularly to stock up on their low-cost clothing from Primarni, as it
is called in jest. The excellent results Primark has obtained in the two stores opened there, in Las Palmas, and Las Arenas, has motivated the company to apply to open a store on Tenerife, where good results are virtually assured. With the philosophy of “Look Great, Pay Less”, the c o m p a n y, founded in Dublin in 1969, is experiencing an unstopp a b l e expansion. Spain is still a clear commitment
of the textile chain, which is enjoying great success since its arrival on the mainland in 2006. The company has about 238 stores in Europe and employs around 42,000 people, growing 16% in the first three quarters
of the 2011-2012 period. For shoppers who are after clothes they can afford to ruin (or for their children to ruin), or trend-led items they know will be “wear-once” wonders, Primark fits the bill. And while the store’s slightly pricier rivals, such as New Look and Peacocks, have been getting squeezed badly by the downturn, Primark has used its enormous, international buying power and closelyg u a r d e d supply chain to keep prices low, though
sacrificing some profit margin. The retailer has still been able to turn in impressive numbers every quarter, even with its rock-bottom prices. The key is that it hits the mark in terms of fashion as well as price. The notoriously private retailer, owned by Associated British Foods, has some of the best buyers in the business. They are adept at translating complicated pieces into simple cuts that can be run up by the hundreds of thousands. Primark features elasticated waistbands and loose-fitting tunic tops, because these garments do not require much in the way of labour. But to their credit, the buyers also have a sharp eye for commercial catwalk trends, and they make sure the rails are full of impressive high street garments - often before the high-end versions make it into stores. It’s thought that Primark, the winner of UK ITV’s Lorraine – Best affordable fashion award 2012 – will occupy locals GA 38 and OR30 in the centre. It seems, it is all systems go for Primark up North!
Cabildo piles on pressure for Hospital funding THE Tenerife Cabildo continues to stress the need to increase the budgets for the hospitals in the North and South, still believing that there is room for improvement in the Canarian Government’s Draft Budget for 2013, either by way of amendments or other formulas that guarantee more resources. So said Cabildo Vice President Carlos Alonso, after members of the Standing Committee of the Canarian Coalition decided to endorse the budget, even though the Cabildo has asked the 15 deputies from Tenerife
to exercise their veto if provisions are not included for the two hospitals. Alonso made it clear that the possibility to veto the budget is “the last resort” for the Tenerife Cabildo, believing that there is still room for negotiation on the part of the Canary Islands, the parliamentary groups and the Cabildo itself. “There
14 December - 20 December 2012
are ways we are putting forward to deal with this issue and we think it likely that the veto will not be necessary,” he said. Carlos Alonso has admitted that the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) budget is “highly constrained” by the economic situation and that a priority is to ensure existing welfare levels, but said he also
believes that it is a priority to improve the hospital infrastructure in the north and the south of the island. “Both are priorities and will have to be balanced and we are looking for ways to do it,” the Minister reiterated. However, the socialist PSC-PSOE has grave doubts regarding the Canarian Government’s commitment
to investing in the South hospital, located at El Mojon, just outside Los Cristianos. Of the three million euros the Canarian Government budgeted for the hospital for 2012, the regional executive has spent just 2,071,819.81 euros this year, 69.06% of the budget, leaving 928,180.19 euros, equivalent to 30.94%, not allocated to the project. The Socialist Regional Deputy and Mayor of Guía de Isora, Pedro Martin, expects the Health Department will offer appropriate explanations about it in Parliament, responding to the question he asked several weeks ago. Martin said: “It is very important to be attentive to the execution of this work, because what happened this year cannot be repeated in a work that is so fundamental to the whole Island, not
just the South”. The fact that the Canary Islands Government has provided for only 1.5 million euros for this work in the draft budget for 2013, he said, “Is not only insufficient but, de facto, means an indefinite stoppage of works. “Given all that has happened in the last two years with the South hospital, the PSOE have set realistic goals for the investment of nine million euros over 2013 and 2014”. While Martin is confident that there will be an increase in the planned investment, the citizen’s Pro Public Hospital Platform is not so sure. Spokesman Jordi Esplugas, restated the “firm decision to demand the remaining sum to complete the hospital is forthcoming in 2013. We will not back down”.

A word from our editor
Adeje encourages healthy eating for It’s PIT time! all school children Email: editor@canarianweekly.com
A NUMBER of Adeje Town Council’s departments, including Health and Education, are the driving forces behind a new project that falls under Education for Health called ‘Healthy Breakfast’.
CHRISTMAS is here, well nearly. The shelves of festive goodies are gradually depleting; shops that never open anything beyond their set hours are now open on a Sunday and each municipality is holding a whole host of traditional celebratory events. Christmas is a time for children and in Tenerife when PIT opens then Christmas is officially here! The Tenerife Cabildo has organised the XXI edition of the Children and Youth Park – PIT, with a total of 41 rides and games. This activity will take place at the International Conference and Exhibition Centre between the 21st December and 5th January between 10.00 and 20.00 hours, except on 24th/31st December, 1st and 5th January, when the regular hours will vary. This year, the theme is about the underwater world. The official presentation took place yesterday, with the Island Councillor for Economic Development, Trade and Employment, Efraín Medina, and the
Page 4
director of the International Exhibition and Conference, Ricardo Palacios attending. Medina explained that “the PIT is a playground and learning area that is already part of the Christmas season. Also this activity generates economic development and employment generating about 250 jobs. “ Among the novelties, Ricardo Palacios said that “this year we will have the greatest car track in Spain.” Since the first edition of the PIT, in 1989, there has been an increase of about 40,000 visitors, last year more than 54,580 visitors attended. To ensure that everything runs properly a team will be in constant contact with the public. This team consists of attraction monitors, security guards, medical personnel, civil protection, cleaning and organization, which will make the visitors stay in the park as enjoyable as possible. Cabildo de Tenerife started Park started the event in 1989 with the aim of providing a place where smaller, younger could learn and enjoy. The PIT consists of a set of outdoor games and fun activities aimed at all children and young people of the island, as well as their families and those with a youthful spirit and life. If you’ve never been it’s definitely worth a visit. Until next week…
It is being held in collaboration with primary schools, and intends to promote the habit of a healthy and balanced diet in order to improve student’s school performance and also encourage physical activity. Department of Education Councillor, Andres Perez Ramos explained, “Some students may be going to school or to sports activities without having had breakfast, with just a drink. “We want to show that a correct and balanced diet is the most important choice that people can make to have a positive effect on their medium to long term health. “In this sense, children are among the most vulnerable groups in terms of nutrition, and we want to teach the habit of eating healthily, because it is the best guarantee for the prevention of the most prevalent chronic diseases in society”. The Councillor explained that this project will involve three phases. The first is the collection of data, which means a preliminary examination of the nutritional problems existing in all primary schools in the Adeje Municipality. Perez Ramos said that, from the information obtained, the second phase of this project will be designed, with
educational content to be developed in the classroom or through complementary activities: educational material will be provided to parents with general healthy and balanced food recommendations that will also be launched at various educational workshops, to promote healthy eating and the need for children to practise physical activity, and finally, there will be story and drawing competitions based on healthy eating and the dangers of junk food. Upon completion of the project, Adeje’s Mayor said some assessments will be made with the objective of improving future editions. This will be done with the collaboration of students together with their parents
and teachers. This would be the third and final phase. Andrés Pérez Ramos notes that the objectives of this project are clear: to promote the development of healthy eating patterns and physical activity in children; to encourage families in the development of healthy eating habits and create healthy schools. He adds that it is important that, for this project to fully develop its objectives, collaboration with the Adeje Health Centre is essential, in the coordination and guidance of health education, as well as the involvement of health personnel promoting good food and healthy living. The project should kick off in February 2013 in all
schools in the municipality of Adeje, and is intended for students from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycle of Primary Education and the student’s teachers and parents. The Canary Islands has Spain’s highest rate of child and adolescent obesity. New lifestyles have led to significant changes and have especially affected the habit of eating breakfast. Lack of time, Ramos Perez explains, “Has led us to consider breakfast as a meal we can do without. Many children go to school or other activities without having eaten breakfast. However, breakfast is an important meal because it provides the energy needed to face each morning’s activities, including a day at school”.
Tremors felt again at school in Las Zocas THE recent inspection carried out at the Secondary School (IES) of Las Zocas due to recent earth tremors has led the regional government’s Department of Education to place a seismograph at the school, stated San Miguel’s Deputy Mayor and Town Planning Councillor, Arturo González Hernández. “The goal is to know where
vibrations that are occurring are coming from so we can find a solution to a problem that is keeping students and parents guessing,” he said. “A few days ago, after feeling more tremors, we made an inspection of the IES, but there were no cracks. Also, the testing that took place last March, as a result of the vibrations felt by students and teachers at that time,
did not reflect any structural abnormality and the technical foundations of the IES are in perfect condition,” he added. However, Arturo Gonzalez notes, “As a precaution it was decided to close the high school annex building until they find out the causes of the tremors. “This measure has meant that students receiving
classes in this space have relocated”. He stated that he regrets that the Ministry of Education did not include in its program of work the IES in Llano del Camello. “A few years ago we gave the regional department 12,000 square meters to build an institute in this part of town, but we are still waiting for it,” criticises Arturo Gonzalez.

El Medano’s new look
Extra culture in 'schools' THE centre of El Medano will soon have some extra cultural space, now that Granadilla de Abona Town Council has finished converting the town’s old schools as locations for a variety of social activities. “We have painted and made some cosmetic changes to the properties, so they can now be adapted to the current needs of the population,” said Culture Councillor Oscar Delgado. The conversion is part of the Town Council’s savings drive during the economic crisis. Costs are cut, but it is still able to provide the public with services.
Canaries’ Economic Report THE Canary Islands will end the year with the unemployed total rising to around 380,000 people - a rate of 33.7%. Tenerife’s Economic Situation Report (CEOE) for the third quarter of 2012 estimates that job losses for the whole of 2012 will be about 15,000, while it expects seasonal demand in the fourth quarter to create about 2,500 jobs, ending the year with some 749,000 employed. That means the average loss of jobs per day in 2012 will be reduced to 50.
Lottery cash won’t help us THE Spanish Government will not use lottery funds to help struggling regions such as the Canary Islands. The decision, according to the Treasury, was made after pay-outs to nine autonomous territories came in at around one-third less than expected. “The Treasury has decided not to proceed with the national lottery debt plan because this additional financing is not needed,” said the Treasury. The lottery, which boasts the world’s biggest jackpot, is Spain’s most profitable, publicly-owned company.
No twinkle at Santa Cruz CHRISTMAS lights in Santa Cruz, the Island’s capital, fell victim to Endesa’s paperwork trail last weekend. The power company discontinued the supply on some of the roads, allegedly, on the grounds that the Council had not submitted the correct documentation. The mandatory technical bulletins were said to have been presented on 4th December, yet Plaza Weyler and Plaza Principe had no Christmas lights over the weekend.
Queen Mary sparks port run NINE cruise ships, starting with RMS Queen Mary 2 on Monday, will have docked in Santa Cruz port by the end of the week, bringing a total of 21,170 cruise passengers and 7,025 crew members. The Queen Mary arrived at 8am from Gran Canaria and set sail for Lisbon 10 hours later carrying 2,400 cruise passengers and 950 crew.
Iberdrola’s big power push IBERIA has opened headquarters in Scotland with a partner - forming the company Iberdrola - to further its wind-farm project there, and has awarded 23m euros to Scottish company Woods for metrological studies of East Anglia. The plan is to start generating electricity in 2015, providing power for about five million homes in Scotland.
Helping hand for jobless LOS Cristianos Remembers You is the name of the tourist town’s new campaign, offering discounts of up to 50% to the unemployed there this Christmas. Participating shops, numbering around 50, are running the savings promotion until tomorrow (Saturday) and ask only that shoppers show proof that they are unemployed. Look for shops that display the Zona Commercial Abierta sign.

mean a “significant” change in aesthetics and the improvement of safety and accessibility to the areas. Bello Rodriguez explains that the works have focused mainly on general cleanliness, the removal of weeds, pruning back plants and making easier access to swimming areas. Above
THE capital’s tram operator, Metropolitano de Tenerife, (MTSA,) is offering its passengers a new service by allowing tram tickets to be paid for by credit card at machines located at the tram stops.
Tram tickets could be paid for by bank cards
With the introduction of this service, passengers will gain in convenience and speed when purchasing their tickets to board the tram. From now on every stop has at least one vending machine that is enabled for such operations. With credit cards or debit cards from any bank (VISA, MasterCard), users can now purchase their tickets by following the steps on the machine’s touch screen. During the first week, in the main tram stops,
Metropolitan personnel will be on hand to inform
all, he said, “It is much more attractive if we maintain these areas along the coast and thus avoid deterioration over time”. All this, said Rodriguez Bello, has been achieved by services personnel and paid for from the municipal coffers, in response to demands from citizens and users in general, due to the
poor state of this area of El Medano. So, not only does it provide better aesthetics, he said, but also safety and accessibility to beaches that are travelled by thousands of tourists and users throughout the year, along with providing the appropriate levels of security and welfare for the residents of the municipality.
THE Granadilla Department of Services, headed by socialist Councillor Juan Rodriguez Bello, is currently proceeding with the implementation of a comprehensive plan of improvements along the coast of the Municipality, specifically in the areas of La Jaquita and El Cabezo, in El Medano, which will

TOURISM SECTOR IS FLYING SO HIGH! THINGS are definitely looking up for the tourism sector here, if brand-new airline routes to the Island are anything to go by. Nearly a dozen links have been added in the last year, including those from Moscow (Aeroflot), Amsterdam (Corendon tour operator), Paris (Iberia), Oslo and Gatwick (Norwegian and SAS), Belfast (Jet2) and Nantes (Volotea). And from 1st April next year, British Airways will be operating flights to Tenerife from Gatwick five times a week, in direct competition
with several airlines there. The company will also introduce a twice-weekly Gatwick flight to Lanzarote next summer. Upbeat Tenerife Tourism Minister Carlos Alonso Rodriguez said: “We are delighted that BA has chosen to launch this weekly link to Tenerife South. “It will enable us to capture an important, premiumniche market, as BA will be the first operator on the route to offer a full Business Class service.” Alonso, together with Tenerife Tourism chief Miguel Angel Santos, this week hosted a presentation to 20 five-star establishments, travel agencies, broadcasters
and conference organisers, outlining details of the new Gatwick link. The Tourism Minister said these increased connections were giving strength and support to Tenerife as a competitive tourist
destination. The Gatwick flight will be operated by 124-seater BA aircraft, which include 25 seats in business class. This, said Alonso, will encourage the arrival of affluent visitors. He added: “A route with
these features is among the main demands in relation to the UK market made by four and five-star hotels on the Island, and Tenerife Tourism had been working on it for some time. “The connection to
Gatwick will help strengthen us as a tourist destination in a market in which our main source is tourism, with 1.68 million visitors welcomed in 2011, which was 16.4% more than the previous year.”

addressing the opposition, with the goal of ending the numerous “squabbles” that he said exist. In addition, the new Mayor recognised the need to promote partnership and collaboration among Municipalities in the region, as well as tourism and security. The opposition groups also hope that the change
of Mayor is beneficial to the interests of Arona. “We must work to reduce the current unemployment rate,” said opposition leader and PSC spokesman, José Julián Mena, who stressed the need to take measures to reduce the number of unemployed. The Socialist councillor also noted, “We must innovate, support business, eliminate red tape and boost tourism”.

Arona beaches still safe
AS the dispute over unpaid wages between lifeguards and the company that provides them for Arona’s beaches continues, rumours that users are at risk abound. However, according to a member of the Arona Council’s press department, the matter is in hand. Canarian Weekly was told that members of the Local Police Beach Patrol are present on beaches such as Las Vistas, in Los Cristianos and all other beaches that would normally have lifeguards. These officers are specially trained to deal with any situations that may arise, until a solution is found and the lifeguards return. The Town Council has, according to the press office, no responsibility for the wages that have been unpaid since August, stating that it had paid the company contracted to provide the staff and it was their duty to use the money to pay workers. Meetings have been held during the past week or so in an effort to resolve the situation and it has been decided that the Council will employ a new service. A further meeting is due to be held next week to settle the matter and award a new licence for the service.

Adeje Local Police on the job in 2012
MAYOR of Adeje, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, and the Chief Inspector of Adeje’s Local Police, Tomás Estevez, presented a report on police activity for 2012 at a recent press conference, reiterating their commitment to maximum transparency. Fraga noted that throughout this year the police have conducted
17,164 actions, split as follows:- 1,622 municipal services (insect infestation reports, public needs and reports of various kinds), 1,084 sanctions (camping, noise, public roads) 159 social services (reports on minors, juvenile records), 150 urban (underground works, and works at precincts reporting), 514 for other municipal areas (secretariat, traffic,

In terms of traffic, the officers conducted 11,306 actions, with 10,703 parking complaints and 19 complaints of driving under the influence of alcohol. To these figures are added 579 complaints referred to the Provincial Traffic (ITV, compulsory insurance, driving licences)
with all 11,306 sent on to the Cabildo for breach of transport rules. Regarding vehicles removed from the street, the municipal towing service attended 6,014 situations. Finally, police dealt with 154 disorderly conduct reports, 118 for drug use and 21 weapons infractions. The Mayor emphasised the great work carried out by the
124 members of the Adeje Local Police, which “are an example of professionalism at the service of others, sometimes risking their own lives.” The Mayor said that despite the current economic situation, the government team remains committed to improving the service offered by the local police to citizens. In this regard, he announced
the addition of two cars and three motorcycles to the current fleet as well as additional officers. The Mayor also stressed the importance of the local police in terms of tourist safety, saying: “The presence of agents prevents the presence of criminals and illegal activities and provides peace of mind to our visitors”.
Drug-smuggling brothers jailed
TWO Spanish brothers, who attempted to smuggle cocaine worth almost £300,000 through Heathrow Airport, have been jailed for a total of nine years. Roberto and Jesus-Maria Moreno-Ramirez were arrested by Border Force officers at Terminal 1 on 19th September after flying in from the Dominican Republic, via Frankfurt. Checks were carried out on their luggage and, when two suitcases were emptied out, they were found to be
Page 10
unusually heavy. The cases were X-rayed, revealing both had false bottoms. Packages of white powder were found concealed within the hidden compartments, and tests carried out on the powder showed it to be cocaine. Just under three kilos of the drug were seized and, if cut and sold on UK streets, would have been worth around £300,000. The brothers, aged 44 and 40 and originally from the La Rioja region of Spain, pleaded guilty to importing a class A drug and were each sentenced to 4½ years in prison by a judge at Isleworth
Crown Court on Thursday, 6th December. Assistant Director Peter Avery, of Border Force, said: “This was a significant quantity of drugs with a potential to do a lot of damage, and the sentences handed down here reflect that. “Drug trafficking is a serious offence, and this case should serve as a warning to others. “Border Force officers are on constant alert to prevent dangerous drugs like cocaine making it to our streets.” Anyone with information about activity they suspect may be linked to drugsmuggling should call our hotline on 0800 59 5000.

Consulate eye-opener THE British Consulate has now revised its Open Day plans for Tenerife, which were put on hold recently. It could prove to be a real eyeopener for Expats. Perhaps you have been told you can receive medical treatment at the health centre in the town where you live, just by showing your UK-issued European Health Insurance Card. Maybe you’ve been informed that if you were thinking of going back to the UK, you’d have to wait at least six months to access NHS health care. And have you heard that you need to have worked 15 years in Spain to be entitled to a Spanish pension? Are you one of the thousands of “Swallows” who have arrived in the Canaries to escape the cold UK winter? If so, have you been told that your European Health Insurance Card will cover everything, from ongoing hospital treatment to repatriation back home?
Well, things might not be quite as they seem because the statements above are all false. Don’t listen to misleading rumours; instead, come and hear from the experts. The British Consulate is holding a series of open events throughout the Canary Islands, including Tenerife, offering advice on some of the issues that matter most to the Brits who live here. Consular assistance, your pension and benefit rights as a British resident in Spain, and your responsibilities as residents in the Canaries are just some of the areas which will be covered. How to register correctly for healthcare is an increasingly hot topic among residents, and this will also be on the agenda, as will details about where to apply for the European Health Insurance Card. Steve Jones, newly-appointed British Consul to the Canary Islands, who will be hosting the events, said: “These open days are a fantastic opportunity for our British residents in the Canaries to hear the most relevant, up-to-date information, from the experts. “I would urge those planning to come along to ensure
14 December - 20 December 2012
they pass on information to friends in the community.” Those attending can submit questions in advance and should do so when booking their place at the event. The question and answer session will follow the main presen-
tation. The event will take place in Tenerife on Thursday, 31st January, at these venues, North and South of the Island: Puerto de la Cruz, Hotel Palmeras Playa - Salon Teide, Avenida Venezuela, at
10.30am (doors open 10am). Los Cristianos, Auditorio Infanta Leonor, Avenida Juan Carlos I, at 6.30pm (doors open 6pm). To book a place online, please visit www.ukinspain. fco.gov.uk/opendays - and if
you experience any problems booking, or do not have Internet access, please call 902 109 356 or 913 342 194. Please note that places are limited and can be guaranteed only if reserved in advance.
Iberia call halt to strikes A PLANNED series of one-day strikes by Iberia staff, which threatened to disrupt Christmas plans for thousands travellers, has been called off. There is still no agreement with the management, but the various unions representing cabin crew, ground staff and pilots, have shelved the walkouts leading up to the festive holiday “with the airlines users in mind”. The six strikes were planned between today (Friday) and next Friday (21st Dec) in protest against the proposed 4,500 redundancies and pay reductions of up to 35%, as well as fewer flights.
But it’s not over yet because the unions still plan to stage
the strikes next month should an agreement with
the Iberia management not be reached.

Tune in to avoid Ex-pat pitfalls... A NEW campaign to help British residents avoid common pitfalls while living in Spain has been launched on English language radio stations across the country. Roadside robberies, out-ofdate passports, and benefits and health concerns all feature in the new radio ‘fillers’, which cover some of the most frequent issues tackled by British Consular staff. The issues are different, but the impact is the same: huge stress for Brits who suddenly find themselves facing frustration, inconvenience and large costs because they failed to take the right steps to avoid problems. Hundreds of Britishregistered and hire cars are targeted every year by gangs, who prey on foreigners by distracting them on the road or at rest stops, and then rob of them of luggage and possessions. In a 30-second filler Keith, an expat in Spain, warns his mate Roy to take care on the drive down, saying: “Lots of
crooks on the roads out here.” It’s all too easy to forget when your passport expires. But if it has and you need to travel urgently, an emergency travel document for one return journey costs around 125 euros. And that’s a costly mistake. In a second filler, Sheila’s renewing her passport to make sure she is able to travel to a ruby wedding party back in Britain. And there’s a reminder to visit the UKinSpain website for a wealth of information about living in Spain, featuring the facts, and not rumours and gossip. Find out why you should register on the Padrón at the local town hall, and how you could miss out on welfarerelated benefits and social services help in the future if you don’t. The UKinSpain website can be found at www.ukinspain. fco.gov.uk. The voices behind the fillers include Sheila Reid, who plays wheelchair menace Madge in the hit UK TV series Benidorm, Keith Barron, Benidorm’s deputy mayor in 2009, and Huggy Leaver, who has appeared in EastEnders and the film Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
Tenerife economy THE tourism sector continues to prop up the Island’s economy with a 9 per cent increase in tourist arrivals during the third quarter. According to the Cabildo, in the last three months analysed (July, August and September) goods carried by sea increased by 21.7 per cent and there was a 13.3 per cent rise in light vehicle registration in Tenerife. By contrast,
construction continues to fall without bottoming out, with a drop of over 20 per cent in the sale of cement, while the industrial and commercial sectors blame the increasing deterioration in domestic demand. However, the unemployment rate on the island stands at 32.2 per cent, 1.4 points below the Canary Islands average of 33.6 per cent.
Adeje Agromercado now four years old! EVERY weekend thousands of people come to buy local produce at affordable prices at the Agromercado in Adeje, a Municipality owned facility belonging to the Department of the Environment and Sustainable Development, directed by Esther Rivero Vargas. On December 20th it will be four years since it opened and, Rivero says that since that time consumers have
been able to confirm the variety, quality and best prices of the locally grown and produced products. To mark this anniversary, they are designing a seasonal products tasting, along with an advertising campaign to encourage the purchase of local products. Currently, the Agromercado receives an average of between 3,000 to 5,000 people every weekend. Unsurprisingly,
many restaurants in the area have decided to go for local, fresh produce, because Councilwoman Esther Rivero said,“Catering establishments have been checking, as residents of the municipality, the quality and variety available at the farmer’s market”. Among the products that are for sale there is a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, wine, honey,
mushrooms, cheese and dairy products, flowers, crafts and baked goods, and in response to increasing demand there are more organic products. Rivero Vargas said the objectives for the future are to improve the internal management of the Agromercado, making it more competitive, to increase the supply of products and their quality and improve service for the consumer.
‘Beautify Granadilla’ underway
Visitor figures on the increase THE total number of foreign visitors to the Canary Islands in November reached 910,989, according to Spain’s airport authority, AENA, representing a drop of 2.24 percent, or 20,852 fewer passengers than in November of last year. However, Ricardo Fernandez de la Puente Armas, the Canary Islands Government’s
Page 12
Deputy Minister for Tourism pointed out that despite the drop in comparison with 2011, this November’s figures are the fourth highest in the last 20 years. Here in Tenerife the news is much better. AENA reports that 351,862 passengers arrived on the Island in November, up by 3,166 compared to 2011. For the year so far, however, Tenerife has been visited by 3,433,532 foreign passengers, a decrease of 0.01 per cent or 443 foreign passengers less than 2011.
THE Granadilla Town Council’s Department of Works, headed by the popular Jose Manuel Garcia Mendoza, is currently undertaking improvement and conditioning works in the plaza
de Santa Lucia, located in the historic heart of Granadilla. The goal, said the Councillor, is to change the image of this emblematic area of the town, “And give it a more
attractive image and prevent deterioration that occurs over time”. Garcia Mendoza said that this reform is being carried out as a result of a project called ‘Beautify Granadilla’,
aimed at preserving the environment, landscape improvement, cleaning high traffic areas and maintenance of public spaces, all of which is providing jobs for 20 unemployed people.

Pope’s first tweet so sweet! POPE Benedict XVI has launched his new Twitter account @Pontifex with a blessing for his one million internet followers.
“Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart," he tweeted on Wednesday. Nearly 800,000 people have registered to follow his main account in English since the Pope announced earlier this month that he would start tweeting under his official Latin title. He gained about one million followers in the eight languages of his account: Arabic, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish and English. But he made it clear he will not be following any particular individual. For his first tweet, the Pope tapped on his tablet during a general audience which was, said Monsignor Paul Tighe, secretary of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, “An
extraordinary moment”. He told Radio Vatican the Twittersphere response was impressive, with more than 2,000 re-tweets in under two minutes. The Pope informed his followers that he was “pleased”
14 December - 20 December 2012
to be in touch through Twitter. But personally, that’s as a far as it goes for the pontiff. Church officials said tweets would be sent by someone in the Vatican’s secretariat of state, but only after papal approval.
Subsequent papal tweets on Wednesday addressed some of the questions submitted to Benedict in the run-up to the launch at #askpontifex. The first tweets drew jokes, criticism and some positive responses. Some even
accused the Pope for the sexabuse scandal that has rocked the Roman Catholic Church in recent years. “hey @Pontifex you want 5,000 followers in five minutes? stop protecting paedophiles in the church
and follow back!” said user @elizabethdanger. “May the connection to God gets closer....” joked @Svidss. The German-born Pope, an 85-year-old theologian, is used to writing philosophical dissertations and papal encyclicals. But under his pontificate, the Vatican has pushed into the social media, using YouTube and Facebook for special events as it tries to reach out to the faithful, especially the young. One user, @becsplanb, replying to the Pope’s tweet asking how faith in Jesus can be lived in a world without hope, said: “I find drinking heavily helps.” Another appeared quite unimpressed with the question. “Seriously Pope I waited all this time for a Question,” said @kataranRI. Pope Benedict does have some previous experience of tweeting, having launched the official Vatican news site on Twitter, @news_ va_en, in June last year, but this was the first tweet under his personal handle. Vatican officials said, somewhat tongue in cheek: “While a Pope is infallible under Church doctrine, Benedict XVI’s tweets are not.”

World News EVERYONE is aware of the 'Dog is for life' Christmas slogan, which has been around for 33 years. And for the 2012 Christmas campaign, Animal welfare charity The Dogs Trust is determined to press home the amount of care needed to have a dog. So often, puppies or rescue dogs have been given to a child for Christmas, only for realisation about the task of looking after it sets in. In the past 12 months, more than 16,000 mutts have been cared for at the charity’s 18 centres across the UK. The campaign discourages giving an animal as a present and, in line with this, the Dogs Trust will not rehome any dogs between 22nd-29th December at its Scotland centres. George Paparakis, assistant manager at Glasgow’s rehoming centre, said that while many people give up their pets for genuine reasons, others do so because they had not thought carefully enough about the demands of keeping them. “Sometimes, there are real reasons why dogs have to come in to us,” he said. “But it can get quite frustrating when people, perhaps, don’t truly understand what it means to live with a dog.” “So sometimes the dogs will come back to us, and
www.canarianweekly.com
Make sure you want that pet some of the reasons that we’ve seen over the years have been ridiculous, for instance: *The colour of the dog doesn’t match the colour of the sofa *The dog has got too big for the house *It barks and makes too much noise * He keeps scaring the goldfish *It snores really loudly *She can't do any tricks *It keeps passing wind
He added:“It just highlights the importance of doing research and thinking about the dog you’re taking before actually committing to it.” The Dogs Trust said some dogs are handed in “just for being dogs” and it is bracing itself for another influx of unwanted presents. Chief executive Clarissa Baldwin said: “Dogs can
provide a world of happiness and enjoyment, and we urge anyone considering a new addition to the family to think it through properly. “ They should
remember that the only place a puppy should be is on the outside
of the wrapping paper, and not inside it!”
Revised law will allow victims to strike back NEW legislation, which should come into force in 2014, will enable UK victims of anti-social behaviour to have a say in how offenders are punished. The so-called Community Remedy, based on a Government white paper, will slim down existing laws, with AntiSocial Behaviour Orders (Asbos) being scrapped on the grounds that some offenders regarded them as a badge of honour. Home Office minister Jeremy Browne said: “Victims of anti-social behaviour and low-level crime often feel powerless. “Our reforms will place power back in the hands of the people, and give them a proper say in how their local area is policed.” The plans have been welcomed by Joanne Binns, who was driven from her Leeds home six years ago by a gang of youths. “No matter what I did, they were tormenting me and my family,” said the 39-year-old.
Page 14
“We couldn’t go anywhere, and we couldn’t even sit in our own home.” Under the new plans, however, victims can make sure offenders repair vandalism. But for suffering Julie, it took a year to bring some of the offenders to court, by which time she’d had enough! ”Even in our own home, with the curtains closed, there were bricks getting thrown, graffiti drawn on our house,” she recalled. “It was just a life of hell.” Since then, Leeds City Council and West Yorkshire Police have worked with other agencies to create a more effective system to deal with anti-social behaviour. Police Superintendent Keith Gilert, the council’s chief community safety officer, believes many of the proposals will help them to do even more. “What we find here in Leeds is that an awful lot of these issues can be dealt with at quite a low level,” he said.“They can
be resolved through mediation and negotiation between the parties.” Under the new legislation, more punishments will be dealt with outside the court system, with police, councils and others working together to create localised ways of dealing with offenders. Victims could be asked whether they want an offender to sign an Acceptable Behaviour Contract, take part in alcohol or drug treatment, pay compensation or repair damage. Ms Binns, who now works with her council to improve communities, cannot wait for the Bill to be passed. “With Asbos, they can tell them where not to hang around and where not to go,” she said. “ But they can’t tell them to go on a drug-rehabilitation course. “With the new Bill we can, so it’s going to help perpetrators, but also give the victim a voice, and that’s what my main concern is.”
Aussie DJ’s given protection AS the body of Jacintha Saldanha, who committed suicide days after receiving a hoax telephone call at the King Edward VII Hospital is released to undertakers, the Australian DJs who made the call, Mel Greig and Michael Christian have been given personal protection. The DJs from Sydney radio station 2Day FM have been moved to safe houses and 24-hour security to protect employees has been put in
place. The security measures have been put in place following alleged death threats to staff. An inquest into the 46-year-old’s death opened at Westminster Coroner’s Court yesterday and heard that injuries were found on her wrists and that she had left three notes. The mother-of-two’s body was released to undertakers on behalf of the family after the hearing. The court heard that police are exploring emails and texts sent by the 46-yearold, who was discovered by a colleague and a security guard on Friday. Officers are also interviewing Ms Saldanha’s
friends and family, and staff at the Australian radio station responsible for the prank. Detective Chief Inspector James Harman said: “On Friday December 7 Jacintha Saldanha was found by a colleague and a member of security staff. Sadly she was found hanging. “There were also injuries to her wrists. The London Ambulance Service was called to the scene. At this time there are no suspicious circumstances.” The inquest came as pressure mounted on bosses at the radio station to name the executives responsible for airing the hoax call.

April's search team ease off THE huge police hunt for missing schoolgirl April Jones has been scaled down temporarily after more than two months.
The five-year-old was abducted on 1st October as she played out with friends on Machynlleth’s Bryn-y-Gog estate in mid-Wales, where she lived. Some 150 specialist officers from 16 police forces had been searching for her. April, who suffers from cerebral palsy, was out late on her bike as a treat for getting a glowing school report earlier that day. She was last seen getting into what was believed to have been a Land Rover Discovery. Mark Bridger, a local man and former lifeguard, was arrested the following day and his Land Rover Discovery seized for forensic examination.
The 46-year-old was later charged with the murder and abduction of the schoolgirl, and perverting the course of justice by disposing of her body. Superintendent Ian John said on Wednesday: “We will be taking a fortnight’s break, and then we will be carrying on at around the same level. Operations do sometimes go up and they go down, but it will be around the same level. ”We are working through a methodical plan, which we have been doing from day one. It obviously changes and is constantly under review. “The key thing is that the family liaison officers and
14 December - 20 December 2012
the whole investigative team are focused on supporting April’s family, and they are kept up-to-date with any developments. We are in daily contact with them.” He added: “Police officers remain motivated by to find the schoolgirl and bringing some peace to her family. Their motivation maintains the same as it was from day one. ”The key message from Dyfed Powys Police is that while the operation will scale down over the Christmas period, work continues apace to make sure we are doing all that we can to find April.” “But we are committed to
stay here until we can be sure that there are no more viable places to look for April’s body.” He admitted the search area was “massive” and that police continued to focus on hunting through the nearby forest and its surroundings. Police search teams were initially supported by the Fire Service urban area searchand-rescue teams, hazardousarea search teams and the Ambulance Service. In addition, mountainrescue teams were called in as different terrain was encountered and closely searched. And even private planes full of technology otherwise unavailable to the police revealed possible search areas. Supt Jones added: “We will keep looking until we are satisfied we have exhausted all lines of enquiry. We are not putting an end date on the operation, and we are not willing to speculate how much longer it will last.”
Olympics helped boost UK income THERE were an estimated 590,000 completed visits to the UK by overseas residents in July and August.
They arrived for the 2012 Olympics/Paralympics (participating, working or watching) or mainly to attend another ticketed event. However, the total number of three million visits in August - for any purpose was 5% lower than in August 2011. Despite this, the money spent in Britain was 9% higher than the corresponding period last year, with the UK earning nearly £2.4 billion from all visits in August. This figure includes any money spent on purchasing Olympics tickets. The average sum spent by Olympic visitors was £1,290 per person - almost twice as much as the £650 average spent by other visitors. The majority of visits for the Games were made by
European residents, with an equal share coming from North America and other global countries. The August fall in total visits followed drops in June and July. And overall, visits to the UK in that period were 7% lower than in 2011, while spending on those visits matched last year’s. In the current year, the number of visits from overseas residents is unchanged in percentage terms from 2011, and spending is 3% higher. And UK residents made 7.3 million visits abroad in August. This was 1% lower than last year, but expenditure was 6% per cent higher, with total spend by UK residents abroad being over £4.5 billion. The distribution of visits abroad by region of destination (North America, Europe and other countries) so far this year is similar to 2011. However, holidays have fallen 2% to 25.3 million.

Night of Heroes 2012 ITV1, 21.00 Leading celebrities from film, television, sport and music will join forces with Britain’s biggest selling newspaper and ITV1 to honour our Servicemen and women by attending this unique evening. The exceptional ceremony, now in its fifth year, will be hosted by Phillip Schofield and Amanda Holden. Phillip Schofield said: “A Night of Heroes allows us to pay our respects publicly to some of the courageous and remarkable service personnel who put duty first. I feel extremely privileged to be able to play a part in doing that.” Amanda Holden added: “The Sun Military Awards is one of the highlights of my year so I’m honoured to be back presenting it for its fifth year. The courage of the men and women we meet is awe-inspiring and it’s vital we never forget the important contribution they make for us all.” The awards will be judged by a panel which includes celebrity judges Jeremy Clarkson, Frank Lampard, Mark Cavendish, Andy McNab and Myleene Klass. Since 2008 the Millies have become one of the most important events dedicated to honouring the immense contribution made by the Servicemen and women who serve Britain at home and abroad. The lavish star-studded evening has become established in the annual events calendar. Last year’s event saw The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attend with Prince Harry, David Cameron and his wife Samantha, David Beckham, Jimmy Carr, Gordon Ramsay, Frank Lampard and Christine Bleakley, Jerry Hall, David Walliams, Alesha Dixon, Jamie and Louise Redknapp and Myleene Klass. David Beckham, speaking at last year’s event, said: “Everybody is proud of these guys for what they put on the line for this country and it’s a great night to honour the brave.” Myleene Klass also said at last year’s gala: “They go beyond the call of duty and then they turn around and say I was just doing my job. That’s something that’s hard to understand as they are the exception not the rule.” The winners of this year’s eleven awards will be announced at the glittering ceremony organised by The Sun newspaper. The Millies are part of The Sun’s ongoing support for the UK’s Armed Forces, which also includes their award winning partnership with charity Help for Heroes; with The Sun’s help the charity has so far raised over £121m for wounded Servicemen and women.

The lads also conjure up their own seasonal specialities including loin of venison in homemade sloe gin and lime seared scallops with smoked salmon fritters. The celebration of Christmas favourites culminates at a stately home filled with nearly 200 mums tasting and sharing each others' favourite dishes.

The classic tale tells the story of the well born, educated but penniless Emily who grew up hoping she would marry for love, but has come to realise that her priority must be survival. Opening in late Victorian London, initially in a shabby part of town, The Making of a Lady depicts genteel Emily struggling to make a living. Fine featured but at pains never to look pretty or attract attention, Emily works for Lady Maria Byrne, a domineering, acerbic older woman who lives in a very smart house on the other side of town. During her daily duties as a lady’s companion, Emily comes into contact with her employer’s wealthy widower nephew, Lord James Walderhurst. Weary of Lady Maria’s relentless match-making, Walderhurst cuts a rather distant figure, but he treats Emily with a great deal more respect and kindness than his aunt. When Walderhurst realises that a favour he asked of her has lost Emily her position he is mortified. It occurs to him that the two of them could come to a practical if unromantic agreement – marriage. He admires the fact she is dedicated and hard-working and appreciates her undemanding nature which he imagines would not impact too much on the life he has chosen. He realises that he can offer her a secure home and a true independence born out of his wealth. He and Emily aren’t in love, but he clearly hopes that one day affection may blossom. Emily is shocked and sad to give up her hopes of marrying for love but without other means of support her situation is such that she has little option and she finds herself accepting. His family disapprove of the marriage, but undaunted Walderhurst marries his Cinderella and they move to his beautiful stately home. With a ruby ring glowing on her finger, Emily is the new lady of the manor but while her relationship with her new husband very slowly starts to blossom the staff, especially the butler Litton and his housekeeper wife are less than welcoming and eye her suspiciously. The only friendly faces in her life are Walderhurst’s handsome nephew, Captain Alec Osborn and his beautiful Indian wife, Hester Osborn. They seem very much in love, which is the antithesis of Emily and Walderhurst’s still unformed relationship, and she is fascinated by their passion. Significantly, Walderhurst intensely dislikes his nephew and his frequent requests for money. Osborn is Walderhurst’s sole heir as long as he and Emily remain childless and Emily realises belatedly that Walderhurst’s sudden proposal was hastened by the family’s concerns about Alec’s marriage to Hester. Emily and Hester quickly develop a friendship and when Walderhurst decides to rejoin his regiment in India in response to an emergency, Emily is grateful for the company that she and Alec offer. Sad and insecure, with her husband having abandoned their home just as they were growing in warmth towards each other, Emily is delighted when Alec and Hester arrive to stay with her, but butler Litton is obvious in his disapproval and very suspicious of their motives. All is not what it seems as an increasingly contented Emily has no inkling her life is actually in danger. Whilst Walderhurst risks his life overseas, his wife is in peril and she seems powerless to avoid the threat that begins to encircle her. The arrival of Hester’s servant, the mysterious Ameerah only serves to heighten the jeopardy surrounding Emily. Will Walderhurst realise the threat that hangs over her new wife? Will Emily realise her life is in danger before it’s too late? Who is the secretive and shadowy Ameerah and why does she come into their lives? Can Litton, a loyal servant over many years to Lord Walderhurst, help Emily as the net closes around her?

Drama based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth about midwifery and family life in London's East End during the 1950s. Sister Monica Joan is found wandering near the docks, and returned to Nonnatus House by the police. Her adventure takes its toll on her health and she succumbs to pneumonia. When she eventually recovers, she sails forth back into the community, only to find herself in trouble with the law when she is accused of theft. As Sister Monica Joan's case progresses to trial, the Nonnatus House community fear that the old nun could find herself going to jail. Already concerned about Sister Monica Joan, Chummy has further worries when her mother decides to make a trip to inspect her new 'beau'. The visit is not a success, and Chummy suffers a crisis of confidence and breaks off her relationship with PC Noakes. Jenny and the other midwives pull together to convince her she is making a mistake.

W C C H O IC E Cuba with Simon Reeve BBC2, 18:00
Adventurer and journalist Simon Reeve heads to Cuba to find a communist country in the middle of a capitalist revolution. In 2010 Cuba announced the most sweeping and radical economic reforms the country has seen in decades. From ending state rationing to cutting one million publicsector jobs, one of the last communist bastions in the world has begun rolling back the state on an unprecedented scale. Simon Reeve meets ordinary Cubans whose lives are being transformed. In this documentary Simon gets under the skin of a colourful and vibrant country famous for its hospitality and humour and asks if this new economic openness could lead to political liberalisation in a totalitarian country with a poor human rights record. Will Cuba be able to maintain the positive aspects of its long isolation under socialism - low crime, topnotch education and one of the best health systems in the world - while embracing what certainly looks like capitalism?

Presenters Rosemary Shrager and Tim Wonnacott visit Castle Howard in Yorkshire to follow in the footsteps of Queen Victoria and her tour of the country visiting the great and the good. Tim talks to the current Earl of Carlisle, Simon Howard, who reveals the lengths his ancestors went to host the queen, and just what happened when 2,000 vistors turned up to see where her majesty had slept.
4thought.tv Channel 4, 19:55 Muslims around the world have expressed outrage about cartoons and a video mocking the Prophet Muhammad, which they regard as deliberate insults to their faith. Some British Muslims have joined Christians in complaining that aggressive atheists now treat all people of faith with contempt. But many others argue that freedom of speech is vital to the health of a civilised society, and that this freedom is more important than any religious sensitivity. 4thought. tv asks 'Should the religious learn to accept blasphemy?' Rabbi Herschel Gluck thinks we have to be careful not to hurt the feelings of others with blasphemous statements. After years of working as an interfaith Rabbi in Muslim and Jewish communities, he understands the Muslim perspective and why provocations like the Muhammad cartoons are unacceptable. He believes that very offensive blasphemy should ideally be dealt with in a criminal court.

Cosmetics. Episode 7. Five pampered British kids embark on the adventure of a lifetime, travelling across Asia to work and live alongside the people who make their favourite things. For the second leg of their Asian adventure the five kids are all back together and have landed in Thailand. They now face two tough days working in a huge international cosmetics factory where everything is made in a highly controlled sterile environment. The group's patience is pushed to the limit working long shifts doing the same thing over and over again. Plus away from the production line there's a split in the group as they revolt over spending two nights fending for themselves in a typical worker's home.

Wartime Farm At Christmas BBC2, 21.00 Ruth Goodman and Peter Ginn are returning to Manor Farm in Hampshire to recreate the conditions of Christmas 1944, the sixth of the war. Britain’s cities were in the grip of the worst German attacks since the Blitz of 1940, as unmanned flying bombs rained down, stretching morale to breaking point. In addition to maintaining food production, it fell to Britain’s farmers to come to the aid of the nation’s urban dispossessed. Ruth discovers how the one million-strong Women’s Voluntary Service lifted the nation’s spirits – from running the government’s National Pie Scheme to making festive decorations from scraps. Peter and Ruth take a wartime steam train and see how the overloaded railway postal system saved space by miniaturising thousands of Airgrams onto film to help those serving abroad keep in touch with home. Finally they arrive at one of London’s biggest air raid shelters, Chislehurst Caves, just 10 miles from the city centre. They discover what life was like for some of the 15,000 people who sheltered there on Christmas Day 1944.

Sitcom about a vicar running an inner-city church. Christmas; the busiest time of year for a vicar, and Adam is full of ideas for his first Advent in London. However, he soon discovers that Christmas at St Saviour's is quite different to his sleepy Suffolk parish. He is under pressure from the archdeacon to maximise seasonal profits, the diary is packed with unusual events, and he is up at the crack of dawn every morning to cook breakfast at the homeless shelter. Exhausted, with a permanent hangover and midnight mass looming, he is in no mood for a house guest, least of all Alex's cantankerous father Martin.

Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares USA Channel 4, 22:00 Gordon Ramsay continues his travels across the United States in a bid to save failing restaurants from disaster. This week, he travels to Philadelphia to visit a Mexican restaurant called Zocalo. At one point, this restaurant played Cupid to a young couple who met, fell in love and married while working here together. Greg and Mary Russell loved the place so much that they pooled their resources and bought it. However, it seems that Cupid's arrow had a poisoned tip: the restaurant has become an albatross around both their necks, threatening to destroy their happiness and tear their family apart. In a heartbreaking, real-life soap opera, Gordon attempts to turn this floundering restaurant - and, just as importantly, Greg and Mary's marriage - around.

To get there they must select the right two products to sell at WOMAD, a festival of World Music that attracts almost 40,000 fans. Two well-known experts from the world of antiques go head to head over a week of challenges to see out who can make the most profit from buying and selling antiques - all of which will be donated to a charity of their choice. Our dealers are in a different buying location each day: an auction house, a car boot sale, a foreign antiques market and a UK antiques fair. They must then sell their purchases for as much money as possible. On Friday, the duelling dealers compete in the ultimate challenge - The Showdown - where at least half of their items must be sold at the Showdown auction. Once the deals are done, one expert will be crowned the Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is champion. The antiques market matchup sees 'Devilish' David Harper go head to head against James 'Bingo' Braxton in an all out pursuit of profit at an antiques fair in Lincolnshire.
The Twins Who Share a Body Channel 4, 22:00 Indian twins Sohna and Mohna are celebrating their ninth birthday. To have reached this milestone is an extraordinary achievement as they have only one body but two separate heads. They are known as dicephalic parapagus conjoined twins, a rare condition which is thought to affect only one in a million. This remarkable film poses the question: How do you live a fulfilled life when you are two conscious beings in one body? Accepted by their local community, one can be asleep, while the other is awake; one twin cheats off the other at school; and each twin controls a different side of their body.

It's an early Merry Christmas from me! IT’S that time of year again, and you might think I am a bit early wishing you all a Merry Christmas. But since I don’t appear in every issue of the Canarian Weekly, I won’t be here again until 2013. I don’t know about you, but for me, the whole year has absolutely flown by! Our climate here is among the best in the world, but it doesn’t always lend itself to feeling very Christmassy. However, there are lots of things that you can do to set the scene, and enjoy your day in style. Dress your table with rich, opulent colours, for example, in reds, golds or greens. A runner along the centre of the table can be bought for a few euros and combined with colourful place mats. You can pick up some fabulous decorated wine glasses from the Christmas Fairs (many of them painted by my daughter Amber!) Your Christmas meal will be more appealing and appetising if the table looks good. In the evening, close the curtains, dim the lights, light a candle scented with cinnamon or spice – and then make yourself a mulled wine and imagine the roaring fire. Okay, that’s probably going too far. But after all, the Christmas spirit is more about who you are with, rather than where you are. The New Year usually also

Gaming market expands brings a period of home improvements, new sofas and revamps, and let’s all hope that the property sales continue to increase and improve as we have seen in the last few months. We have some new ranges of economical furniture arriving in January, and we will continue to offer the furnishing service, which includes providing everything for a new property, right down to kettle, toaster, sheets etc, so that properties are ready to move straight into. We also anticipate that people working to a budget will go ahead with reupholstery and respraying work. So all in all, we are optimistically looking forward to a busy and successful 2013. Doom-mongers mutter about “the 2012 phenomenon” and declare that the end is nigh on 21st December. That is thought to mark the end date of yet another
calendar, the Mesoamerican Long Count, which has been as good as its word in having counted for a long 5,125 years. I reckon that they just got bored counting, or that there was no more space on the pyramid, or wherever they were writing their calendar. They probably found it quite funny that we would be in such a panic at the end of 2012! Just in case, I will make sure that I have a very large glass of wine in my hand for most of the day on the 21st - and probably pretty much of the festive season if I can get away with it! And all being well, I will be here writing again in early January when, of course, it will be the time of year to revamp your houses with Deco Nuevo and look to the future again! So we wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.
THE Spanish video game market has grown more than any other in Western Europe, with an increase of 17% compared to 2011, according to a study from Newzoo. The study used figures from the markets in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Belgium and Denmark. The Spanish market takes about three-quarters of the 20,000 million euros collected by the
European gaming market. Similarly, consumption of mobile games in Spain has almost equalled that of games consoles, with 12.9 per cent and 13 per cent, respectively, reports Europa Press. Spain has also exceeded consumption across four screens (computer, TV, mobile and tablets), with 33 per cent, compared with an average of 21 per cent in Europe and 22 per cent in the United States. The report also notes that the European video games market is growing faster than that of the US. Video
game consumer spending increased by 3 per cent in Europe, compared with 1 per cent in the United States. In the coming years it is expected that both the European and the US will increase their consumption by more than 17 and 36 per cent, respectively, as more players start spending money on games. Finally, the report explained that the digital distribution of online content on smartphones and tablets is helping to sustain the decline of physical sales of video games.

Some trees do so more quickly than others, and the best way to ensure satisfaction is to care for the tree while it is in your home, laden with decorations over the festive period. Before buying it, make sure it is fresh. The needles should not be dull and dried up, and the branches should not be brittle. The outer needles should not fall off if the tree is gently shaken. It should be treated like any plant being brought into a warm, dry atmosphere. So, after you have bought your cut tree, keep it outside in a cool, shaded place, preferably standing in water, until it is required indoors. Before bringing it inside, it
will help if about half-an-inch is cut off the butt to open up the pores of the tree. Mount it in a water-holding stand or wedge it in a bucket
with pebbles, small stones or screwed-up newspaper, and place it away from direct heat. Make sure you keep the container topped up with
water every day because you’d be surprised how much it needs. Container-grown trees These have been grown for
at least one season in their pots. It is often possible to lift the whole root system out of the pot and see the closelywoven root, which has grown in the pot. The trees themselves should look fresh. The trees will be small and seldom more than 3ft high. They should be watered and cared for, as you would any house plant. After Christmas they can be planted out, with a good chance of success, or left to grow on in their pot. But in this case, it is much better to re-pot the tree in a larger container, although it’s seldom possible to re-pot trees in this way for more than one season. Cut trees Root-balled trees These that have been carefully prepared so that they can be dug up with minimal disturbance to the earth round the root system. Earth is retained by wrapping the roots in sacking or similar material.
The roots should be kept damp and the trees, having had the sacking removed, should be potted in moist earth. These trees should remain fresh, retain their needles, and have a reasonable chance of survival if planted out after Christmas. Trees with bare roots These have been extracted with their roots. This is usually only possible with the smaller trees. The small roots break off and no soil comes with the larger root system. They should be freshly harvested, and it is best to soak the roots in water before potting the tree in moist earth. And make sure the earth is kept moist. These trees will last longer if they are kept away from direct heat when they are brought indoors. There is a slight chance that these trees will survive if planted out after Christmas, but keep watering well.

CARL PATTISON
from Robot, Los Cristianos answers your hair questions
Be jewelled, and party on! DURING this month’s party season, it wouldn’t be right not to add to your party a few extra little details. Hair accessories are still big news, and you can’t get away from the fact that even the major celebs are rocking this look. To me, an up-do isn’t complete without some sort of matching detail to add that extra sparkle to your outfit. Even if you aren’t wearing your hair up, there are many different ways to give your style that little more pizzazz, and hair-bands look great on swept-back hair left down. Try to match the jewellery with your hair accessory because clashing is rarely a good look. So, if you’re wearing your best diamantes, then tie this in with your hair bling. The simplest up-do can be really set off with a small statement piece in your hair, and these don’t even have to be expensive. A few euros spent on an expensive-looking piece will look a million dollars in your hair. As I usually explain to my clients, if you are going to use some hair ornaments, try to place then to one side of your hair because central has a little look of “bridesmaid”. You want to look chic, and not as though you’re go-
Page 40
ing to a wedding. If you are going to look around for something to complement your outfit, then try to go for something more vintagelooking rather than modern. Too blingy can look cheap rather than chic. And if you are going for diamante, try to find something that’s not too large as this can look too showy. Small and discrete always works well. Also, you need to remember that if you have darker hair, pick a brighter item, or else it will disappear into your hair.
It’s the same if you are blonde because diamante works well, as do darker stones. But anything whiter in blonde hair won’t show up. If you can’t find what you want to put in your hair, or simply don’t want the expense, then maybe you can adopt this tip. I’ve often used earrings placed in the hair, and they look just as good, and, depending on the shape, do necklaces. Anything to add that sparkle to your party style!

VAL SAINSBURY Keeping her finger on the pulse Email: val.sainsbury@canarianweekly.com DIABETES could cause heart failure and even premature death for 65% of those suffering from the condition. The Diabetes UK charity admitted people were “dying before their time”, while Government Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said although progress was being made, there was an “unacceptable variation in diabetes care” in Britain. The National Diabetes Audit released the figures after studying data concerning almost two million people, and it also found increased risk of other complications, Now in its eighth year, the audit covered around 85% of people in England with diabetes, and about 54% of those in Wales. Researchers compared the rates of a range of complications among people with diabetes with those seen in the same-sized group in the general population. In 2010-11, 45,000 people with the condition had heart
Diabetes has deadly aspect failure (where the heart does not pump blood as effectively as it should), when the expected number was 27,300. The most common reason for heart failure is that the muscle has been damaged, for example, after a heart attack. Heart attacks were 48% more likely - 14,500 people with diabetes suffered this complication in that period - when 9,800 of such cases would have been expected. And people with diabetes were also at a significantlyincreased risk of needing a foot or leg amputation. All the complications studied are recognised as being linked to diabetes and, therefore, more likely to occur in people with the condition. But the researchers believe
better preventative care would reduce cases. Dr Bob Young, of the National Diabetes Information Service, who led work on the audit, said: “If everyone achieved the treatment targets laid down by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), none of the complications would be inevitable. There is substantial scope for improvement.” The audit also estimated people with diabetes had a 40% higher risk of death than the general population 65,700 deaths compared with an expected 47,000. Dr Young added: “Much can be done to reduce these risks if all health-care sectors work together with people who have diabetes.” Barbara Young, chief executive of Diabetes UK,
said: “We hope this report spurs the NHS into action to improve the current situation, in which fewer than half the people with diabetes meet the recommended cholesterol levels - and a significant minority are not even having it measured.” Professor Peter Weissberg, medical director at the British Heart Foundation, said: “It’s essential that, firstly, all people with diabetes are identified and, secondly, that they receive appropriate treatment and advice to help them avoid cardiovascular complications. ”Still more important is the need to prevent diabetes from occurring in the first place by tackling the increasing levels of obesity in our society, particularly in our children.”
Why sex addiction is so easy to come by EXPERTS blame sex addiction in teenagers on easy access to online pornography and a lack of education about the subject. Sex-addiction therapist Paula Hall said almost half of those who suffer with the problem first experienced problems before they turned 16. Her claims come after a survey she conducted in conjunction with the counselling organisation Relate found that 40% of teenagers had used pornography before the age of 12, and 90% felt it was to blame for their addiction. And earlier this year, Keir Starmer, Director of Public Prosecutions and Britain’s top prosecutor, said teenage relationships were becoming more abusive. That, he maintained, was because of the easy access to internet pornography, and he also expressed his concern about the “exposure of young people to all sorts of material”. The research also suggests that factors such as parental separation, single-sex schooling and limited sex education were all
contributing factors. Nearly half of those surveyed had experienced some kind of childhood abuse or assault, indicating this to be a major cause of the condition. Hall’s survey of people with sex addiction, conducted for her new book Understanding and Treating Sex Addiction, looked at the age most people started, what factors led them there, whether they sought help - and the consequences of their addictions. She defines sex addiction in its simplest terms as “a pattern of out-of-control sexual behaviour that causes problems in someone’s life”. The survey also highlights the contrasts between male and female attitudes about sex addiction. Substantially more men seek help than women, with 57% seeking
14 December - 20 December 2012
professional help, and just 38% of women. In 80% of women, “affirmation and feeling wanted” was the biggest “reward” for their sexual behaviour, But for men, “excitement was the biggest reward. The results also indicated the damaging consequences of sex addictions, with 65% of those questioned struggling with low self-esteem, and almost half experiencing mental-health problems. Nearly half had lost a partner because of their behaviour, and a quarter said it had affected their sexual functioning. When asked what the biggest influence was on their sex addiction, “easy access” and “lack of education” were both cited as more significant
than “negative” childhood experiences. Watching pornography was also identified as being the most common result of addiction. Hall added: “The reality of the Western world today is that ‘opportunity’ is everywhere and people, with or without a background of trauma and/or attachment difficulties, can now indulge their sexual desires and run the risk of becoming addicted.”

Hobbit fever
A number of weeks ago we publicised the fact that Hobbit characters were being used in an airline safety announcement. Now, far from being an ‘Unexpected Journey’, the latest Hobbit film has helped drive an increase in flight searches to New Zealand this December, reveals leading travel search site Skyscanner. It’s no flight of fantasy; this December, worldwide searches to New Zealand are up 102% compared with December 2011.
Furthermore, Hobbit fever has caused a surge in searches to the country’s capital, Wellington, increasing by 117% compared with the same period last year. Officially renamed the Middle of Middle Earth for the film’s premiere, Wellington’s airport features a 12m sculpture of Gollum, while, in the city centre, Tolkien fans will find a 40ft statue of Gandalf and Middle-earth dollars in circulation. For aspiring elves or hairytoed hobbits, flights to New Zealand this month currently start at £934 from London Heathrow.
Travel news in brief Belfast to Birmingham EasyJet has added a second Sunday flight departing at 13.25 from Belfast International and 14.50 from Birmingham, from 31st March 2013. Flights are now on sale at www.easyJet. com with fares from £22.99, one way including taxes. The service only began in October of this year and already has flown 14,000 passengers on the route. Clowning around There’s still time to get your Christmas fix, by visiting a Christmas market. In Hamburg, in front of the town hall, is one of the most beautiful markets, with an added attraction of being designed by the famous German Roncalli’s Circus. Stocking up, up and away for Christmas An estimated 30,000 people will fly with British Airways on Christmas Day alone, the airline is stocking extra gifts for its busiest shopping month on board. This includes the launch of an exclusive charity donation card, created by Turner Prize nominated artist Tracey Emin. Last minute Christmas shopping is not just resigned to the high street – research found that nearly a third (32 per cent) of people would consider buying their Christmas gifts on board flights. While a further 17 per cent of those travelling will forget to pack a present accidentally leaving it at home, with the hard-done by brother-in-law being the person we are most likely to forget! Peter O’Shea, British Airways onboard retail executive said: “December is our busiest month for on board shopping. Customers like to chose from our carefully selected gifts and benefit from a wide range of travel exclusives and tax-free purchases. Many also like the convenience of buying on board, as it means less to carry in their luggage.” Monarch Airlines launches TV ad Monarch launched its second TV advertising campaign on the 26th November, in the South-East, encouraging customers to ‘dust off their suitcases’ whilst highlighting their new ski routes for the winter season and the growing number of city breaks now available. The advert increases awareness of Monarch Airlines’ product offering and its new scheduled services to the ski destinations of Friedrichshafen, Grenoble and Munich from where more than 100 ski resorts can be reached. The increasing number of city break routes the airline offers including the new ski destinations plus Venice, Rome and Barcelona are also highlighted.

ON THE ROAD WITH JAV Behind the Wheel
Email: Jav@canarianweekly.com
Honda hybrid is buzzing IT would take a real hawkeye to distinguish the new Honda CR-Z hybrid from the old one. But once behind the wheel, things get clearer. That’s because it feels faster and the Sport+ button adds some excitement. The hybrid didn’t exactly set the world on fire when it was launched in 2010. The petrol-electric powertrain was, and still is, a novelty for a sports car. But the smart-looking coupe just didn’t feel as though it was fun - or even fast enough to compete. Now, though, Honda have ironed out the Honda flaws with a subtle facelift, featuring tweaks to the styling and the mechanics, and it has a certain buzz. The visual updates are hard to spot. The grille is subtly different, with a new mesh, while the air intakes either side of the front bumper are now larger. At the back is a carefullyredesigned diffuser. And there are two new colours to choose from - Energetic Yellow and Aurora Violet! Interior changes are limited, with revised door panels freeing up a little extra space in the bins, and there’s also
a new S+ button on the steering wheel. And as for the powertrain, there’s a new lithium-ion battery pack, updated motor and tweaked engine, which add up to more power, up - by 9bhp to 135bhp. The steering wheelmounted button works in a similar way to an F1-style KERS system. You simply press it to get an extra boost from
the electric motor for up to 10 seconds. True, it does provide a noticeable difference in the car’s acceleration, but you still won’t be pinned back in your seat. But if it’s not quite up to McLaren’s standards, it’s still enough to give you a buzz! Economy and CO2 emissions are unaffected
by the mechanical changes, although as the GT now rides on 17-inch alloys instead of 16-inch wheels, it returns 54.3mpg and emits 122g/ km, compared with the prefacelift car’s 56.5mpg and 117g/km. The Honda drives in much the same way as before, with a comfortable ride and impressive refinement.
It has plenty of grip through corners, thanks to the suspension system, which uses a combination of MacPherson front struts with lightweight forged, aluminum lower control arms and a torsion-beam rear suspension. Using struts in front makes more room available for crash reinforcement, and the rear torsion beam’s compact size
helps maximise cargo space. Honda engineers have tuned these components to give the CR-Z responsive handling and a decisively funto-drive character. At the same time, the suspension is exceptionally compliant, even over rough roads. All CR-Z models feature Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with traction control.
Kia sow seeds for an almighty GT surge! KIA, the go-ahead Korean car-maker, whose motto is The Power to Surprise, are planning to do just that in mid2013. They will be releasing a completely new range of an entire GT brand after their Cee’d GT debuts at the Geneva Motor Show in March. The three and five-door warm hatchback will be the first in a wave of GT models from the Korean company. The Pro cee’d GT, as shown in this official picture of the mean-looking machine, is certainly a head-turner, with
many new features, including unique paint colours, special upholstery, Recaro sports
14 December - 20 December 2012
seats, bodywork stickers, exhaust pipes, LED lamp clusters, 18-inch alloy wheels
and special body parts. And if the car is a hit, the models will be available
individually to drivers of standard Cee’d models soon after. A spokesman confirmed: “The UK will get some very distinctive trim and equipment with the GT, and if it’s successful we will offer the look as a ‘kit’ for other models. “We’re also considering a diesel version, and we’ve been approached by the US about a tuned-up version of the Forte.” There are also plans for further GT models, including a tuned-up diesel and eventually an even hotter petrol version than the 201bhp 1.6-litre Pro_cee’d GT. The new GT models will be powered by a new 201bhp 1.6-litre GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) petrol engine.
It will be equipped with a twin-scroll turbo-charger and strengthened internal components. And the engine in both new GT models will be mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, enabling them to reach 0-62 mph in 7.9 seconds. To stand out from the rest of the cee’d range, the Kia Pro cee’d GT and Cee’d GT models will incorporate unique visual and under the skin features including new grilles, lamp clusters, deeper bumpers, 18-inch alloy wheels, red brake calipers, Recaro sports seats, alloy pedals and bespoke materials. The chassis and suspension are also updated to match the more powerful engine.

Peacocks put Potters in a flap IT has been a tough first season in the top flight for Puerto Colon-based team The Peacocks. The chaps had a rough start as early defeats by Hammers C, Gaffers A and Phoenix Potters dented their confidence. But they laid one of the ghosts to rest with a fine 7-5 win in Los Abrigos. Phoenix Potters have been solid at home this season, but The Peacocks joined Hammers A in coming away with all three points. And with winnable matches coming up, they will be confident of moving up the table. Phoenix pub-mates Knights had a night to forget as they were turned over at Tenerife Hammers C. In a strange match, they were 2-0 down early on, only to rally and take
the next three frames. Baker and Sean got the Hammers lads back in front only for Harry to beat Ken to level at 4-4. The Bubble-blowers are use to tight matches and they ground out the next three frames to move to 30 points and a great return before Christmas. Dreamers are into the top half of the table after bagging their third straight win. Toscales A were their latest prey, with Tommy and Mark both sealing hat-tricks. Palms A returned to form, swotting Terrace B aside 8-4 despite Graham becoming Jean’s latest victim. And Terrace Bar A are back in the win column. They also came through 8-4 against La Cana, despite James losing all three rubbers. It’s all getting rather tight in Division Two. Well, behind

Fuenlabrada 2 CD Tenerife 0 CD Marino 1 Zamora 1 THIS was CD Tenerife’s worst display of the season, and they are out of form at a pivotal moment. The warning signs have been there, and this debacle makes it back-to-back away defeats, with just one win in six matches. Make no mistake, this was no fluke or freak result. Tenerife were lucky to get 0, and a better side than Fuenlabrada would have scored four or five. The hosts are fourth in the table and on paper they are a good side. They are not, though. Real
The bubble has burst
Aviles, a tiny side with a fan base who go to matches in a taxi, are top of the table. They are not a good side, either. I’ll be surprised if either of them make the play-offs! Tenerife are a decent outfit, with a squad more than capable of getting out of this Mickey Mouse league. They have a fine manager as well, but something is not right at the moment. If I could put my finger on it, I’d be rich. Your guess is as good as mine. Maybe Cristo Martin’s petulance a few weeks ago was not a one-off case. Maybe the players are just having a dip at the same

kopping it. It’s the first time since week two that Tenerife have not been top, and some Chicken Littles were calling for the manager to be sacked. The good old Canarian attitudes die hard. The boss is not the problem, and maybe a win on Sunday against Sanse will cure all the ills. Tenerife need a centreback, a play-making midfielder and proper competition for Aridane, who needs a kick up the backside. He is a laid-back character at the best of times, but now that he’s the league’s top scorer, he is playing like his job is done. I’d drop him this weekend if it were down to me. At the back, Bruno and Amado are not good enough, while David Medina’s worrying habit of falling asleep is getting worse. With Pablo Sicilia not reversing his decision to retire, Tenerife need a stopper. And fast. In midfield, Victor Bravo is so out of favour, I have more chance of playing. Yeray needs time to learn the role, but it’s time Tenerife don't have, while youngster Abel is even wetter than Yeray. Director of football Quique Medina hinted this week that reinforcements are on the way, saying: “We are still on a financial knife-edge, so we will see what we can do. “But there would be one, maybe two new players - but no more. We would have to move a few out to get some in.” Hardly Redknapp-esq! The local media have been banding a few names around, but there does seem to be
some legs to both possibilities. Jorge Luque, now 31, would be an easy signing to make. The veteran midfielder is a free agent after being released by Elche. He has spent most of his career in the top two divisions and would be a solid signing. He was part of the Xerez side who went up to La Liga with Tenerife in 2009, and he had good spells with Cordoba and Alicante. Luque is said to be keen to play here, and is good mates with Luismi Loro. But Tenerife are not the only show in town, so he may cost a few extra quid. The second option is a little out of left field, but not impossible. Albert Puigdollers, a former Barca youth player, has spent most of his career at this level. He had decent stints at Sabadell, Badalona and Gava
and, at the minute, is playing for Cowdenbeath in the Scottish First Division. He is on a month-by-month deal and is only now starting to get his match fitness and form back. Puigdollers has started the last four games for the “Blue Brazil” and is the sort of player we need. Again, he is in demand, but it would be a decent fit. Interestingly, youngster Omar Rodriguez has been training with the first-team squad this week. He turned 20 only two weeks ago and is being groomed for the new year. This would surely mean the end of Jeremy’s disastrous spell and free up a senior squad space. Fringe players, and those not even close to being good enough, Ayose and Germain, are also set to leave, while Abel could be loaned to CD Marino.
