Cirque du Soleil – jubilation and joy

IRQUE DU SOLEIL, often called one of the world’s most exciting and innovative circus troupes, is coming to Tenerife on January 13th for a week-long-run at the Pabellón Santiago Martín, in La Laguna. The Quebec based company is recognised the world over for high-quality, artistic entertainment. Since its birth in 1984, Cirque du Soleil has constantly sought to evoke the imagination, invoke the senses and provoke the emotions of people around the world and now it is bringing its two and a half hourlong show, ‘Alegria’ to Tenerife for the first time. According to the troupe, Alegría is a mood, a state of mind. The themes of the show, whose name means “jubilation, joy” in Spanish, are many. Power and the handing down of power over time, the evolution from ancient monarchies to modern democracies, old age, youth - it is against this backdrop that the characters of Alegría play out their lives. Kings’ fools, minstrels, beggars, old aristocrats and children make up its universe, along with the clowns, who alone are able to resist the passing of time and the social transformations that accompany it. It has a baroque, somewhat operatic style that includes fabulous costumes that evoke the pomposity of the aristocracy of Versailles or other courts of the time and live music, plus a scenario that perfectly showcases this athletic and artistic spectacle. The result is an impressive mix of talent, strength and speed, combining to create elegant and almost ethereal performances. Breathtaking trapeze and high wire acts perform 12 metres in the air, while two artists revive the Mongolian art of contortion and the crowd gasps at the

flying, flaming knives in the Dance of Fire. Some 10 million people around the globe have seen this classic show since its first performance in Montreal in 1994, which consists of 55 artists and musicians and is often referred to as “a baroque ode to the vitality, grace and power of youth”. The cast of performers and musicians come from 15 different countries. All of them are real athletes and they must be accurate as cogs in a clock, flying through the air making spectacular jumps and turns. Alegria is much more than a show ... it’s an exciting and unique experience for all ages. On Sunday, January 13th there are two performances at 17.30
and 21.30. On the 15th, 16th and 17th there is one show each day at 21.30. Then on the 18th

There, in the early eighties, a band of colourful characters roamed the streets, walking on stilts, juggling, dancing, breathing fire, and playing music. They were Les Echassiers, a theatre group founded by Gilles Ste-Croix. Of course, people were impressed and intrigued by the young artists, including Guy Laliberté who was the Cirque du Soleil founder. In 1984, Quebec City was celebrating the 450th Anniversary of the discovery of Canada by Jacques Cartier, and they needed a show to
bring the festivities to the whole province. Guy Laliberté presented a proposal for a show called Cirque du Soleil (Circus of the Sun), and was able to convince the organisers. And from that moment the Cirque du Soleil has not stopped. Created in 1984 by a group of 20 street artists, thee company is made up of 5,000 employees, including over 1,300 artists coming from approximately 50 different countries. Cirque du Soleil has brought wonder and delight to more than 100 million people in 300 cities on five continents. The mission of Cirque du Soleil is to invoke the imagination, provoke the senses and evoke the emotions of people around the world.

Tourism shores up the Tenerife economy again

ENERIFE generated 70,515 new contracts in the tourism sector last year, 3.4 per cent more than in 2011, according to the Canarian Employment Observatory (Obecan). The Research Department of Tourism Tenerife said the positive situation of tourism here on the Island is in contrast to the general decline in
hiring within the sector throughout the Canary Islands, which fell by 1.3 per cent, with an overall figure of 178,348 this year. Within the tourism industry in Tenerife, the hospitality industry’s (accommodation and food) new contracts increased in 2012 by 3.8 per cent to 49,351 (1,829 more than last year), helped by a 12, 9 per cent increase in jobs in food and beverage services. By contrast, housing services fell by 6.3 per cent in new contracts, compared to 2011. The Cabildo Vice
President and Tourism chief, Carlos Alonso, points out that, despite the increase in unemployment across the board, “the tourism sector continues to shore up the economy of the island.” Alonso said the sector has been creating jobs for two years and that “Our managed expectations make us confident that this trend will continue in 2013.” With respect to the data for the month of December, Tenerife formalised contracts totalling 5,049, some 68 less than last year (-1.3%). Despite this
negative data, the hospitality industry continued to generate new jobs in December, up seven per cent from a year ago, with 3,703 new contracts in the month. Accommodation services contracts increased 3.9 per cent while food and beverage services were up 9.1 per cent. Recruitments in other economic sectors in the month of December recorded a decline of 4.8 per cent from the same month last year. In total, 16,706 contracts were formalised in Tenerife, 839 less than in December 2011.

Gorillas enjoy birthday feast LORO PARQUE is celebrating the birthdays of Pole Pole and Noel, two of the six gorillas living there since 1992.
Pole Pole is now 23 and comes from Munich’s Tierpark Zoo in Munich, as does its cohabitant, Noel, who is three years older. And they celebrated their birthdays in style, thanks to their keepers, who prepared two special cakes, made with fruit and vegetables. In addition, various wooden objects and surprises were introduced to their exhibition to enable them experience a new adventure. It’s all part of the enrichment activities for the mammals to enrich the development of the different animal species. Both Pole Pole and Noel are western Midland gorillas. who arrived at Loro Parque in the Nineties as part of the European
Programme (EEP). This protects animals in danger of extinction, such as the Midland gorillas, which live in the jungles and forests of equatorial Africa. The worsening state of conservation of this species has made captive breeding efforts become much more important now. Fortunately the population, managed in a co-ordinated way by European zoos (EEP), has a good number of examples (420 in 2008), of which three-quarters were born in captivity. The singles group of Loro Parque is a key player in the captive breeding programme in Europe. That’s because it allows greater genetic exchange and helps to manage family groups in other zoos better. Gorillas are the largest living primates, and the animal species with which humans have, after chimpanzees, a closer relationship. In fact, the percentage difference between the DNA of gorilla and human is only 1.6%.

CW News In Brief Almond blossom time again
SANTIAGO del Teide is set to celebrate the 16th annual Almond Blossom Route, a programme designed for people to enjoy the flowering of these trees, which occupy the roads hit by lava from the volcano Chinyero after the 1909 eruption - the last recorded on the Island. According to local Culture Councillor Ibrahim Forte, almond blossoms represent “a unique phenomenon of nature in winter, and an exceptional show along the valley”. He said the walk, which attracts more tourists and hikers every year, takes place on 26th January, and registration opens on Monday (14th Jan) at Santiago del Teide Town Hall. The council has linked with the Tenerife Cabildo Environment department, the management office of Teno Rural Park, environmental education company El Cardon NaturExperience, Tenerife Rural Foundation and the agricultural association Los Poleos to organise the event. There will be two routes this year - one leaving from the Town Hall Square, lasting 4½ hours with high difficulty, and another starting at El Calvario de Los Baldíos, in El Valle de Arriba. Jobless total drops slightly
THE number of people registered unemployed fell in December, according to Spain’s Labour Ministry, which is a positive development for the country’s recession-burdened economy. The total, adjusted for seasonal swings, fell by 41,023, or 0.8% from the previous month. It was the first drop since July but still left Spain with 4.85 million people out of work. However, the official unemployed number throughout 2012 was 10% higher than a year earlier.
Essential items cost more
THE cost of essential goods is set to rise in Spain, according to TV reports, and the increases are expected to hit energy, travel and medical supplies. Consumer prices rose by 3% in 2012 and the inflation rate stayed at 2.9% in December. Electricity bills are also scheduled to increase from between 3-6% for around 20 million families this year. And those exceeding the average consumption will have to pay a surcharge of up to 8%. Commuting and travelling around the country will become more expensive as fuel prices are on course to go up by 3.5-4.5 cents per litre, and airplane tickets will increase by 6%. The government has also put a further drain on pensioners after introducing cuts to their payouts, and a one-euro fee on top of prescription charges. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy says the country will continue to feel the recession in 2013, with its economy facing a “very tough” time.

O M E WHERE in Tenerife, at least one group of people who forked out 200 euros between them for an El Niño lottery ticket before Christmas will still be celebrating. That’s because they have shared two million euros as part of winning ticket No 30.875. It means that those who held a décimo (one-10th) will each have won 200,000 euros. And they will not be too concerned about the 20% tax levied for the first time by the Spanish Government on all State lottery winnings above 2,500 euros. Most of the tickets were sold in Alicante city and in Alcorcón (Madrid), with a few others went in the centre of Madrid, in Parla (near the capital), in León and in Murcia. It came as a Godsend to many of the winners,

Bargain-hunters spark sales boom I T’S not just the Brits who go “sales crazy” at this time of the year - it is happening in Spain and Tenerife, as well as many other European countries. And the Winter Sales were brought forward 24 hours by many shopkeepers to gain an edge. Traditionally, the sales begin the day after the Three Kings feast (6th
Jan), but because it fell on a Sunday this year, Monday was decreed a Bank Holiday instead. Although many large department stores refused to break with tradition, waiting until Tuesday before opening with drasticallyreduced prices, others stole a march by trading on Monday. All retailers are said to be chopping their prices “aggressively” to attract as many customers as possible. Yet with the relentless recession, job losses
and September’s IVA increase, the average shopper will spend around 72 euros only in Tenerife during the entire sales period, which generally runs until early March, and 80 euros on mainland Spain, Discounts of between 50-80% are available in most shops, particularly clothing retailers, with household goods and linen and domestic appliances attracting minimum reductions of 30-40%. Thousands of people in Tenerife flooded the
high streets on Monday in search of a bargain or two. And, unlike the poor pre-Christmas turn-out, shops were overflowing, the queues to pay went on forever, and people were charging around with bags full of goodies in their hands. While most entrepreneurs, especially small businesses, realise these sales will not rescue the December figures completely, the current surge should improve the holiday takings of many local shops.
Venus arrives in Santa Cruz IT’S not often that the arrival of a lavish superyacht arouses so much interest.
But the ‘Venus’, owned by Apple founder the late Steve Jobs was received with a rare
show of amazement when it docked in the port of Santa Cruz this week. The ship, some 78 metres in length and of avant-garde minimalist design, arrived three months after its launch and after solving an embargo in the
Dutch capital of Amsterdam for nonpayment of several invoices to French millionaire Philippe Starck, who designed its interior. The ‘Venus’ will remain in the capital for a few more days so its 15 member crew can
rest and re-provision the ship for the next leg of its journey to Palm Beach, Florida. It’s due to depart on Saturday 12th January at 10am. So if you want to see the super yacht get to Santa Cruz quick!
New year, new look WE’RE back, with our first edition of 2013 after the festive break. January is the time to wipe the slate clean, start afresh and make plans. It’s almost as if when Big Ben chimes midnight on New Year’s Eve, everything that has gone before has been absolved. HE Advisory Board of the Loro Parque Fundación has decided, to give over one million dollars in 2013 for the conservation of animals and their habitats.
It will also go towards and the fulfilment of environmental programmes in 22 countries worldwide. This signifies a huge commitment from the sponsors and supporters of this institution, despite the current financial crisis, for the protection of various ecosystems. It also provides help to the very marginalised communities. The decision will impact positively on the achievement of at least 36 species recovery projects, especially parrots, as well as educational activities and protection of cetaceans, especially in the Canary Islands. In this 16th annual meeting, held at Loro Parque, various experts and conservation advisors from private and public entities worldwide have analysed and discussed in detail the priorities of the projects. They have also assessed the results
of some programmes initiated in previous years, in order to renew those activities. It is worth highlighting the success of the recovery project for the Yellow-eared Parrot of Colombia, whose population as grown in 13 years from 82 to nearly 2.000. It is an environmental advance that requires the commitment of continuity, which LPF firmly assumes. Among the most important projects is the one dedicated to the protection of the Philippine cockatoo, which in 2013 will have a budget of over 170,000 dollars. And more than 105,000 dollars will be put towards the continued fight against the
extinction of the Bluethroated Macaw. In addition, there will be further research on the immunology and bio-acoustics of cetaceans, conducted with the universities of La Laguna and Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. There is also the satellite-tracking project for orcas, realised together with the CSIC in the Strait of Gibraltar, which has instigated a marineprotected area in the Gulf of Cadiz. This protected area will form part of the Natura 2000 Network. It will preserve the high biodiversity of cetacean in the Strait, and will also have a speciallyprotected area for orcas. Finally, it is appropriate to highlight
the important economic contribution of the sponsors of the Loro Parque Foundation, whose collaboration is imperative to be able to develop all these environmental projects. New rules on foreign assets F INANCIAL advisers with expatriate clients who are tax-resident in Spain say they are urgently reaching out to their clients to warn them that they must begin reporting to the Spanish tax authorities about any overseas assets they hold worth more than 50,000 euros, following a recent change in Spain’s tax regime.

comply. Under the new rules, failure to declare any amount worth more than 50,000 euros in any single asset class, or to report on any offshore entities which name the individual in question as a beneficiary, would result in a combination of a tax and fine that could not only empty
out the offshore account completely, but could leave the individual owing the tax authority, La Hacienda, even more. For example, an expat living in Spain who was discovered to have 300,000 euros in an undeclared offshore account would see this
nest egg taxed at the top rate of 52 per cent. But the fine for having failed to declare this would be 150 per cent of the 52 per cent, meaning not only the loss of the savings, but an additional 90,000 euros, according to Vince De Stefano, managing director of Totus, which specialises in looking after expats in Spain. In addition to the name and address of the financial institution holding their accounts, Spanish taxpayers with offshore accounts will be asked for all their relevant account numbers; the dates that their accounts were opened, closed or changed in any way; their account balances as of December 31st and the average account balance in all the relevant accounts in the final quarter of the year.
Individuals are considered resident in Spain for tax purposes if they spend more than 183 days in Spain in one calendar year (or live on a boat within 12 nautical miles of Spanish land during that time); if Spain is “the centre of their economic activities”; and/or if their spouse and/or their dependant minor children live there, regardless of how many days the individual in question actually spends in the country. The new rules come into force just a month after a tax amnesty ended. As reported by Canarian Weekly, under that scheme Spanish taxpayers with undeclared taxable assets were given the opportunity to declare them in return for having to pay no more than a flat 10 per cent levy.
Concern over Ex-pats confusion with port projects Spanish health system THE upcoming start of the improvement and repair work at the harbour in Los Cristianos has made some traders worried about the impact it may have on the popular tourist destination and now they are asking that heavy construction material is moved only at night. “The concrete blocks that this infrastructure requires will have to be made and transported from a site close to the sports centre, quite a distance from the port,” the group declared. “We don’t know how many of these blocks will be transferred to the pier daily, but it is clear to us that it will cause traffic chaos and the big losers will be the traders, as it will put off potential customers and at the present time that’s a luxury we can’t afford. “Therefore, we think these blocks should be moved once the shops are closed, between 22:00 pm and 6:00 am”. The traders wanted to clarify that they are

not against the work, planned for this spring, but are concerned regarding how it is accomplished. They point out, “The ideal would have been for the blocks to be manufactured in the parking area in the spring, which would have avoided the problem of transportation. “We are calling on those responsible for planning to use some sanity and avoid damaging the local business community”. The work includes the reinforcement of the 32 metre-long sea wall and repairing the damage to the port infrastructure caused by the rains that hit this part of the municipality of Arona in February 2010. As a result of this storm some 431 concrete blocks of 45 tons will be needed to properly repair damaged areas, all of which will have to be transported by heavy vehicles, the very thing that has local traders on edge.

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
is often used instead of registering as residents. He said many people wrongly use the EHIC to get medical help, which is leading to a strain the UK health service. “There is a fair amount of confusion out there and because of that confusion we get an awful lot of complex cases to deal with in the consulate. “And most of them are down to a little piece of plastic, the EHIC.
“A lot of people carry it around and use it to go to the doctors in Spain, but it is not necessarily the right way to get health care here.” The EHIC card entitles visitors to ‘medically necessary’ treatment which can include emergency treatment, the monitoring of ongoing conditions and repeat prescriptions. “It does not entitle you to anything that can wait until you get home.”
Standing stressed the point that the EHIC was for temporary visitors only. “If you live here this card is not for you,” he said. He added: “There are a lot of people who spend a large part of the year here but do not consider themselves to be residents, but when we have given them the correct information, do consider themselves to be residents.”

Oasis Fm had their own version of the Price Is Right, and James guessed closest to the actual retail total to win all the prizes! “It’s amazing, I’ve never ever won anything in my life” he told Oasis Fm as he was interview by DJ Jamie Drew. “It’s just a great way to start Christmas. There are so many prizes aren’t there! I really can’t believe it. There is the champagne, the hard
drive, the big TV. “I was guessing a bit with my entry because some of this stuff? I have no idea what it was worth!” For Bristol lad James, it was a change of luck: “It’s gone my way, hasn’t it!” he added. “I was the last phone caller and it’s just so great. I’ve entered a few competitions but never even come close to winning anything before. It was pure luck.” The competition ran throughout December and every day, listeners had to guess the value of a group of items. The winner who came closest to the true value, without going over, was entered into the grand final. And every day, one of the items was added to the final prize pot. Palms Bar in Torviscas hosted the all-day event, which had a massive 1,000-euro prize fund. Entry was free to players from the Oasis Fm Pool League, and 60 of them battled it out to win the 500-euro first prize. The event was a freedraw competition, with players being drawn out of a hat in every round, thus giving everyone a chance to win. And just like in the FA Cup, there were lots of shocks and surprises. Leading side Tenerife Hammers A saw two of their best players, Jambo and Wez, fall at the first hurdle, while youngster Harley brought the house down as he nearly knocked out Terrace Bar’s Scudz. The second round saw Palms lose Graham and Roscoe, while Treehouse bragging rights went to Mark after he knocked out team-mate Greg. The last-16 round was contested over three

frames, and the losers collected 10 euros. Penguin rode his luck to beat Paul, from Ryans Bar, and Conrad beat Terrace team-mate Mal. Quarter-final losers were rewarded with 30 euros, and all four matches went to the deciding third frame.
The pick of the matches saw Penguin squander the chance to beat Ashley as the 20-yearold booked his place in the semis. Conrad continued his march against Scudz, while Gaffers’ Paul potted superbly as he edged past Sean from Toscales.
The final quarterfinal was a nervy affair as both players had their chances. Fritzel, aka Barry Harper, uncharacteristically missed some easylooking pots and he was punished by James from Gaffers, who earned a shock semi-final spot. These would prove
once-sided affairs as Ashley and Paul easily accounted for Conrad and James, who still went home happy - and 50 euros richer. The final saw Ashley at his very best. He hardly missed a ball in the first two frames and, after a cautious, victorious third frame, he took the
fourth smoothly to win the final and bag the 500-euro jackpot. Paul was delighted to have got to the final, win 200 euros and book his place in the squad to face Scotland in February. League chairman Roscoe said the event was a massive success, adding: “It was a brilliant day and everyone enjoyed themselves. It goes to show what a great league we have when we can raise such an amazing prize fund. “The players loved the competition and the chance to play in front of a large crowd. This gave us a wonderful atmosphere and Ashley was a worthy winner. Old grave reveals no clues on missing girl MOIRA ANDERSON disappeared way back in 1957. This week forensic scientists commenced exhuming a burial site in Old Monkland Cemetery near Coatbride, Lanarkshire, in the hope of finding her remains, but the search has proved unsuccessful. Chief

Kenny Macleod, of Strathclyde Police, said: “I can confirm that Moira’s remains have not been found. “Obviously, this is not the conclusion that her family had wished for, but I would reiterate that the case is not closed. “The case will remain open and any further lines of inquiry will be investigated.” Moira disappeared after taking a trip on a bus when she was 11 years old; the bus was driven by the prime suspect in the case, convicted paedophile Alexander Gartshore, who died in 2006.
Capital terrorism arrests IN London, Police have arrested a total of four men on suspicion of terror offences. Three men aged 18, 21 and 31 years-old, were arrested at separate addresses in London in the early hours of Thursday morning. A 33-year-old man was arrested earlier at Gatwick Airport
on Wednesday as he attempted to take a flight out of the UK. The activity forms part of an investigation into travel to Syria in support of alleged terrorist activity. They will be questioned by officers from the Metropolitan Police’s counter terrorism unit.

Drop a Glass Size in 2013 A campaign encouraging women to ‘Drop a Glass Size’ in 2013 has been launched by Health Secretary Alex Neil.
As part of the campaign, which also includes a national roadshow, a new ‘drinking mirror’ smart phone app has been developed to show people the shocking affects of regularly drinking too much. The app is free until the end of March and will show users that cutting down a glass size can have a significant affect on the ageing process. Latest figures show that around 38% of
women regularly exceed daily or weekly sensible drinking guidelines, by drinking more than 2 to 3 units a day / 14 units a week. . The number of alcohol-related deaths among women aged 3044 has doubled in the last 20 years, and the chronic liver disease and cirrhosis death rate
among 30-44 year old women in Scotland has trebled since the mid to late 1980s. The campaign encourages women to think about the health effects of regularly drinking above the recommended alcohol guidelines. Making small changes, such as alternating alcohol with
soft drinks or water and having two alcoholfree days a week, can lead to big health improvements. Mr Neil said: “Evidence shows us that most people who drink alcohol, particularly at home, have no idea of how much they are actually consuming. This campaign will show people how small changes to their drinking habits can have a significant impact on their health and wellbeing. “Scotland has an unhealthy relationship with alcohol and much has been done in the last five years to address this. Our alcohol framework outlined a package of over 40 measures to reduce alcohol related

nominated for her role in the big screen version of Les Miserables. Steven Spielberg’s political biopic Lincoln leads the field however. Daniel Day-Lewis is in the running for the Best Actor award for his performance in the film’s title role as the US president who led his country through the civil war and ended slavery. includes Ben Affleck and Hathaway’s co-star Hugh Jackman. The film picked up 10 nominations in total, with nine each for Les Miserables and Life Of Pi. Oz fires rage on to weapons dump MORE hot weather is on the way this weekend, bringing the risk of more infernos in Australia. Australia’s firefighters are working in treacherous conditions in a bid to stop the raging bush fires reaching a former weapons range which is littered with unexploded bombs. The blaze is just 2km from the Tianjara plateau in New South Wales, which was used by the Australian army as a practice bombing range until the mid1970s. Officials said the fire’s path was currently playing into their “firefighting strategy” and that if necessary; they had time to put in a firebreak in the area. However, were the flames to reach the plateau, located in the Morton National Park, it could complicate efforts, with the unex-

ploded bombs making water-drops impossible. Rural Fire Service inspector Brett Loughlin told Australia’s ABC radio. “We can’t do waterbombing with aircraft or something like that in case the weight of the
water, when it hits the ground, sets off any unexploded ordnance,” “So it’s a total no-fly zone and that will mean (if) the fire gets into that area, there’s nothing we can do for it except wait for it on the other side.” The fires have been
burning for nearly a week with many burning out of control in New South Wales. 350,000 hectares (865,000 acres) of land in New South Wales have been affected. Thankfully there has been no loss of life, but thousands of sheep
have been killed. The impact on farmers has been massive with vast amounts of pasture, crops and animal feed lost, as well as thousands of head of stock and agricultural infrastructure such as sheds and outbuildings.
NSW Rural Fire Service commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said, “It’s about focusing on getting as much contained and consolidated as we can ahead of a return to hotter and dryer conditions dominating much of NSW over the coming days,” he told ABC television. “We’re looking at temperatures across much of NSW into low-to-mid 40s and extending into the high 40s on Saturday. “The only reprieve, if you can call it that, is that we are not expecting significant wind strengths to build. “But it is almost academic. With such hot, dry and dominant (weather) movement from the northwest, even a moderate breeze is going to be problematic and risky for communities and firefighters over the weekend.”

Cons face new rehab courses

EOPLE sent to jail for under 12 months in Britain will have to complete a rehabilitation course after being released.
At least, that’s the government’s plan, and Justice Secretary Chris Grayling has hopes that the rehab period will help convicts to go straight. Those jailed for less than a year now undertake rehab on a voluntary basis only, and they are otherwise released into the community with no supervision or support. Almost half of all prisonleavers are convicted again within 12 months, and for those serving less than a year, the figure goes up to nearly 58%. The reform proposals call for greater use of mentors, who will meet offenders at the prison
gates, while private contractors will paid to provide probation services, but according to results only. “What we do at the moment is send people out of prison with £46 in their pocket, and no support at all,” said Grayling. “No wonder we have such high levels of reoffending. It is madness to carry on with the same old system and hope for a different result.” But his plans have been dismissed as “breathtaking arrogance” by Shadow Justice Secretary Sadiq Khan, who said: “Payment by results in criminal justice is untested, and the Tory-led Government are taking a reckless gamble with public safety. “Pilots were already underway to see if payment by results worked and to ensure any problems were ironed out

before being rolled out. “The new Justice Secretary is demon-strating breath-taking arrogance in choosing to ignore the pilots.” Under the new scheme, the public-sector probation service will continue to deal with the most high-risk offenders, including all serious sexual and violent offenders. The blueprint will be set out this spring, and the system will be widespread across England and Wales within two years. Grayling added: “We know across the public, private and voluntary sectors th at there is a wealth of expertise and experience we need to unlock, so we can finally begin to bring down our stubbornlyhigh reoffending rates. “Our proposals will see all of those sentenced to prison or probation properly punished,
while being helped to turn away from crime for good. “They will also mean we spend taxpayers’ money only on what works when it comes to cutting crime.”
BRITNEY set to leave X Factor. In America, Britney Spears who joined the US version of The X Factor last year with a salary of approximately $15m (£9.4m) is rumoured to be leaving before she’s fired. Ironic really as just last month the pop star was hailed by Forbes magazine as music’s top-earning woman of 2012, with estimated earnings of $58m (£36.2m).
However critics have slated her stint as “bland” and “boring” during her one-season on the talent show, and Cowell was supposedly preparing to give her the boot. The X Factor, which has run for two series in the US, had expected to see a boost in its rating after recruiting her, but in fact it lost three million viewers. The third season of The X Factor is set to begin in September.

This is 2.5 to 3.5 times greater than the total human use of fresh water today and could lead to more dangerous water shortages around the world; • there is the potential to provide 60100% more food by eliminating losses and waste while at the same time freeing up land, energy and water resources. Dr Tim Fox, Head of Energy and Environment at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers said: “The amount of food wasted and lost around the world is staggering. This is food that could be used to feed the world’s growing population – as well as those in hunger today. It is also an unnecessary waste of the land, water and energy resources
that were used in the production, processing and distribution of this food. “The reasons for this situation range from poor engineering and agricultural practices, inadequate transport and storage infrastructure through to supermarkets demanding cosmetically perfect foodstuffs and encouraging consumers to overbuy through buy-one-get-one free offers. “As water, land and energy resources come under increasing pressure from competing human demands, engineers have a crucial role to play in preventing food loss and waste by developing more efficient ways of growing, transporting and storing foods. “But in order for this to happen Governments, development agencies and organisation like the UN must work together to help change people’s mindsets on waste and discourage wasteful practices by farmers, food producers, supermarkets and consumers.”
By 2075 the UN predicts that the world’s population is set to reach around 9.5 billion, which could mean an extra three billion mouths to feed. A key issue to dealing with this population growth is how to produce more food in a world with resources under competing pressures – particularly given the added stresses caused by global warming and the increasing popularity of eating meat – which requires around 10 times the land resources of food like rice or potatoes. The world produces about four billion metric tonnes of food per year, but wastes up to half of this food through poor practices and inadequate infrastructure. By improving processes and infrastructure as well as changing consumer mindsets, we would have the ability to provide 60-100% more food to feed the world’s growing population.

Live Arico (PAWS) news Lions off to a Bagging a fortune at Iceland

IRSTLY, a Happy New Year to all our supporters, new and old, and may 2013 bring you all you wish for, and more.
We were again asked to pack bags in Iceland, Las Chafiras, for three days during Xmas week, which we were more than happy to do after previous years had proved lucrative. As we no longer have the refuge, we thought it fitting to share the wealth with other animal welfare associations, and from the total collected - a fantastic 1,181 euros we have already made a 400-euro donation to SOS Peludos, and 100 euros each to K9 and Cats Welfare. SOS Peludos, a small association in the North, help with rehoming as well providing support to refuges. In fact, they collected almost a month’s worth of food for Live Arico back in the summer,
and this was just a small way of thanking them for that gesture. In the next few days we will also be making a donation to Esperanza del Sur. A big thanks to Iceland for giving us the opportunity to do this. Although the sum collected was superb, as important to us were the lovely comments and words of support we received. This was heartwarming to say the least. Thanks to all of you for keeping the faith. We won’t let you down. We also sent food last month to the value of 2,887 euros to the Fasnia refuge, where the Live Arico dogs were rehomed when our own refuge was closed down. SAN Miguel Lions Club present their first charity event of the year next Saturday (19th January) at The Welkom bar, CC Chaparral, Costa del Silencio.
There’s live entertainment and a buffet included in the 10-euro tickets, which are available from The Welkom. You can also get them from the club’s Charity Shop, which is open Monday-Saturday (10am-2pm) in The Dip, Silencio, or from any club members. The San Miguel club enjoyed a busy festive period, starting with their Children’s Christmas party at Patio de Coral, Costa del Silencio. Included was a visit
by Santa, a good lunch and music provided by Check to Check. Thanks to Carlos and his staff for their excellent service. That was followed by an invitation to the AMISUR day-care centre for their Christmas Fiesta. The Lions provided a music man (Dave Social) and they supplied a tasty paella, cooked by one of the dads. San Miguel Lions President Ralph Solomon, said: “We thank all those who have supported us throughout 2012 and wish everyone a happy and prosperous 2013.”

Beppi’s at home in German snow
Estrella's pupils living the dream STUDENTS from the Estrella Theatre School will be performing the premier of Live Your Dream this month at the Infanta Leonor Theatre in Los Cristianos. There will be three shows - in English, Spanish and German - presented by Estrella Productions, on 20th, 21st and 22nd, and the youngsters will act out the inspirational story about a travelling clown who’s really funny, and a ballerina. Live Your Dream (Vive tu Sueño) is set to dance, mime and narration, and has been created to entertain children and adults alike. It’s a great way for kids to appreciate classical music and ballet on stage, as seen through the eyes of the main character, the aspiring clown dancer. This pioneering venture started up a year ago when producer Kerstin Lammel wrote a story about a clown who dreamed of becoming a dancer, despite his parents desires for him to stay in the family tradition of comics. One day, he meets a ballerina and discovers that dreams can come true. Kerstin teamed up Heike Bartels, a choreographer, performer and dance instructor who was founder and director of a dance academy in Bremen, Germany, She has since worked

in Spain to live her own dream, which is to choreograph and dance. Working in tandem with director Alfredo Muzaber to create a performance that combines classical ballet and story-telling proved a challenging endeavour, which pushed both of them to understand more about each other’s craft. Muzaber is a theatre veteran, directing several children’s shows, and he is best known for his marionette shows throughout Europe and America. Kerstin says: “Alfredo’s influence and direction on stage has been paramount. He really knows how to bring the sentiments of the characters to life through movement and gestures.” Tickets, just eight euros each, can be obtained from the Infanta Leonor Theatre and the first show, on 20th January at 6pm, will be in Spanish. The English version takes place the next night at 7pm, and the German show, on 22nd January, starts at the same time. All three nights are fine for children because most of the show is about dancing and storytelling, with just a small portion of narration. And there’s a special gift on the night for those kids who can produce a picture of their dreams.

amazing Eco houses. Not everyone can adopt a dog, or even have the desire to, but dog-walking brings so much pleasure to the animals, especially the refuge’s long-term dogs. It’s a marvellous sight to see them having some love and attention, so please pop down to the refuge, which is open

The festive season proved extremely busy at the refuge, with many dogs being brought in. Two gorgeous Rottweiler puppies from Arona arrived on Christmas Eve, along with dogs of all shapes, breeds and conditions. Each and every dog receives full veterinary care and attention before seeking a loving home. One lucky dog was Beppi, a basset hound whose new owner fell in love with him after seeing him on Aktiontier’s website for dog adoptions in Germany. His new owner already has two other basset hounds and a huge garden for them all to play. Beppi has settled in well and is slowly acclimatising to the weather, even experiencing snow for the first time. He is one of the more fortunate dogs because he had been abandoned on the streets and was taken, officially, to the refuge. With Christmas behind us now, you might like to be

The ‘wild-dog’ tamer!
Campaign leader turns tail and is now feeding the Guaza mountain pack
T
HE woman who launched a campaign to rid the streets of a pack of wild dogs, who were terrorising a prestigious Los Cristianos area, is now feeding them!
In an astonishing about-turn, Suzanne Hinchliffe and her small band helpers are not only feeding the Guaza mountain pack but they have also rescued 19 puppies from their hillside home - and found homes for most of them already. The lettings agent even kept one for herself - a beautiful dog she calls Baby - and so did Justin Quinn, her second-incommand, who sparked the entire “wild dog” debate last summer. “I really can’t believe what has happened,” said Suzanne, “One minute we were adamant we had to involve Arona Council, the local police and even the Cabildo. “And the next minute we were scouring one side of the Guaza Mountain in search of the pack in the hope of rescuing them.” Suzanne had no idea
there was a major problem with stray dogs until she read a message by Justin on Facebook pleading, in so many words: “What are we going to do about them?” She responded, as did various other local residents and, before long, enough people had taken a concerted interest to form the Action Against Wild Dogs group. Feelings ran high at a second meeting after an invitation to attend was snubbed by various local authorities, including the Cabildo, Police, Town Hall and local Tourist Board. Eventually, a decision was taken to denounce the Arona Mayor, other notable officials - and even the Cabildo President! To the dismay of many group members, however, Suzanne began

a seemingly-impossible campaign to try to rescue the animals. “No one, except Justin, believed it could be done, and it caused so much conflict that the group was rapidly abandoned,” she recalled. “But once I’d found one puppy and fed her, then another, it just snowballed on the mountain. Before long, Justin and I were feeding five dogs and several pups who were really friendly.. “It was a bit heartstopping at first, but we soon realised that they were not wild at all but had simply been abandoned by heartless owners and were starving. “That’s why they were scavenging around the basuras in our area and frightening restaurant staff, residents and holiday-makers alike.
She added: “It’s true, some people were attacked, but I honestly believe the dogs involved were from another pack, who still live on the other side of the mountain. “The local council virtually put a stop to their antics in the streets by replacing the old basura bins with modern, safety units which are difficult to open, and I like to think we have helped by feeding our handful of dogs and the puppies. “Instead of wondering where their next meal is coming from, they sit patiently, waiting for us to come along with their food.” Remarkably, Suzanne has even recruited a small team of volunteers, who help feed the animals. A rota has been drawn up for them, while some residents, happy to see the back of the
dogs, have made small donations towards the food bill. And some of the restaurateurs in the Oasis del Sur area who complained bitterly about the dogs causing mayhem outside their premises, are now donating scraps to the cause. With most of the puppies re-homed, their next task is to capture the abandoned pack, have them neutered or spade by a caring vet who has already come to their aid, and taken in by a refuge with a view to finding homes for them. “They are really friendly and are no danger to humans,” said Suzanne. “Yes, they will still be frightened of people they don’t know, but we’ve proved that, deep down, they can become domesticated. “We need to find a friendly place for them, where they can learn that not all humans are bad, and that they don’t all throw rocks at them. “But I don’t want them caged up, and my own feeling is that they will be far happier remaining on the mountain. They love it there, they know they will be fed every day – and their tails wag like mad whenever we approach.
“But I don’t believe that solution would please everyone, and anyway, I think I’d get a lot of stick from certain people if that were to happen.” Although the rescue group have come in for a lot criticism over their actions, having led the initial wild-dog protests, they take a great deal of satisfaction from the fact that some residents still talk about the dogs’ disappearance from the streets, and are curious to know there they have gone. Great Night Out is a brand new 6 x 60 minute post-watershed comedy drama series for ITV1 filmed on location in London and Stockport. Each week they follow our four mid-thirties mates as they enjoy a weekly boys’ get-together in Stockport. As they help each other through romantic, work and family crises, they invariably create much bigger problems to solve. Hodge (Lee Boardman) sees himself as the leader of the group – but no-one else does. In reality he side-steps responsibility - and spending money. His wife Kath (Rebekah Staton) most certainly wears the trousers at home; Beggsy (Will Ash) is an upbeat soul, divorced for a year but still pining after his ex-wife who has fled down under with her new hubby taking their daughter Kelly with her. Glyn (Craig Parkinson) is everyone’s loyal underdog who still yearns after his high school crush Julie (Christine Bottomley) and seems to fluff every attempt to get together with her despite his mates’ well-intentioned ‘advice’; Daz (Stephen Walters) is the eternal pessimist of the group, the first to pull Hodge up on his sometimes questionable fashion sense and the first to put a dampener on a situation. Sometimes he’s in a relationship with Colleen, sometimes not. Their constant bickering seems to be the only glue holding them together, but underneath there’s a real love. Great Night Out charts the lads’ attempts to right their worldly wrongs – so long as they don’t have to move too far from their local, the footie or greasy spoon to do so. In episode one, Hodge and Kath’s seemingly carefully planned wedding anniversary celebrations go slightly awry when some of the guests are waylaid. Meanwhile, Glyn goes to the extreme lengths of taking salsa lessons in an attempt to catch the eye of his gorgeous school sweetheart Julie, and the lads help a worse-for-wear comrade in need, with disastrous consequences.

Time Team Channel 4, 17:25 A Capital Hill. Tony Robinson and the Team investigate a huge hill near Cardiff that may be immensely significant; is it the long-lost Iron Age capital of South Wales? During the course of their investigations the archaeologists make one particularly rare discovery: the most complete Early Iron Age cup ever found in South Wales, which proves that the site is from the earliest part of the Iron Age, at around 800BC. A huge hill dominates the Ely housing estate in Cardiff. Its towering ramparts and deep ditches identify it as a hillfort, and the effort of their construction indicates that this was no ordinary Iron Age homestead. The site's so big that thousands of people could have lived up here. It's never been explored before. If there were houses, none are visible now and the age of the fort has always been a mystery. Tony Robinson and the Team have five acres of hilltop, half a mile of ramparts and ditches and just three days to answer some very big questions.

Joshua’s mother JANE GRACE (Emily Joyce) admits she saw Reuben on the day of his murder, but denies any wrongdoing. POLLY BEATTY (Catherine Steadman), Reuben’s wife, surrenders her husband’s appointment book, which reveals an unknown client who went by the initials of ‘K.D.’ Lewis and Hathaway search through Crane’s files and find a vital clue that leads them towards the killer, and an arrest. Following the case the relieved detectives take some time out to contemplate life, death and the higher powers.

Father Brown (Mark Williams) attends a tea party to celebrate a new church clock tower, presided over by his friend Reverend Bohun (Adam Astill). However, the serene atmosphere is shattered when his caddish brother Norman (Sam Hoare) arrives, riling most of the guests. Just after the bells sound for the first time Norman’s body is found behind the church, the back of his head hit by a hammer found lying nearby. The local blacksmith Simeon (Barry Sloane) is immediately suspected but his wife Elizabeth, (Bryony Afferson) guilty about having relations with Norman, confesses to the crime and is arrested by Inspector Valentine (Hugo Speer). Reverend Bohun implores Father Brown to find out the truth. At the police station Elizabeth confesses that she’s innocent, however until the real culprit is caught, she won’t speak up. Father Brown must find the killer before an innocent woman is sent to the gallows…

Death In Paradise BBC1, 21.00 Second in the series, a young nun is found dead in her smoke-filled bedroom, DI Richard Poole and his team are soon on the scene. What seems like a tragic accident caused by a lit cigarette soon turns into a murder investigation when Richard deduces that the nun didn’t smoke the cigarette that killed her. But with her room locked from the inside, how could anyone else from the convent have committed the crime? There’s no shortage of suspects, including other nuns, a priest and the mother superior, as well as a mysterious ‘phantom nun’ who nobody can identify. Or could the case be connected to the holy spring on the grounds of the convent, which is being promoted by an unscrupulous PR man? In this episode, food inspector Mandy from Gravesham Borough Council is on the trail of a Chinese takeaway who, she finds, are not living up to their hygiene rating. In the food lab, Chris meets secretary Sharon from Halifax, who suffered from a very serious case of salmonella poisoning. Food inspector Russell from Reigate and Banstead Council visits a pizza delivery company, where he finds fridges at the wrong temperature for food safety, a staff member washing his hands in the food preparation area and a box of chicken wings left underneath the pizza oven to defrost.

The competition to crown Britain's next culinary superstar continues. The remaining five chefs from the last heat return to face a skills test. Monica asks each chef to prepare a beef kidney, removing it from its fat, and cooking and serving a portion. With only 12 minutes to complete the task, the chefs must keep calm and work fast if they want to impress the judges with a perfectly prepped and cooked kidney. At the end, Monica and Gregg must decide who will be leaving the competition. It is then up to the four remaining chefs to raise their game for Michel Roux Jr. Michel cooks pochouse bourguignonne, a Burgundian fish stew made with freshwater fish. In one hour the chefs must recreate this dish, showing off their filleting skills and their ability to balance the delicate flavours. They are then given just one hour to prepare their own classic dish. With only three places up for grabs, their dishes must impress. Only the best three chefs will go through to the quarter-final.

Later, Debbie's lover Oliver Ordish is garrotted with cheese wire and covered with cheese fly larvae. Jones then discovers that dairy owner Gregory Brantner was paying the dead man a consultancy fee. That night Gregory goes to investigate an alarm at the dairy and is stabbed through the heart with a cheese needle. One Born Every Minute Chnanel 4, 21:00 Two strong-willed first-time mums give birth at Leeds General Infirmary. Alexandra is 25, prefers to be called Sasha and is fiercely independent. She's naming her baby boy 'Rupert' after the actor Rupert Everett 'because he's so handsome.' She left her native Latvia in search of adventure and ended up in Leeds. The baby's father isn't in the picture anymore and Sasha wants to go it alone. Although her family are worried about her being so far away, she believes this baby is the missing piece in her life. Surbhi is from the warrior Hindu caste and knows what she wants. Her husband, Kaushik, who's from a caste of philosophers, will do anything to please her. They met when she heard him singing in the shower in the flat downstairs. He was 20 minutes late for their first date and he has never quite made up for it. More seriously, he feels responsible for a motorcycle accident that left Surbhi paralysed in one arm, so the baby promises a fresh beginning for them both.

Inside Death Row with Trevor McDonald ITV1, 21:00 The first episode sees Trevor step onto death row for the first time as he meets the 12 condemned men. The prisoners will spend up to 20 years on the row with little contact with the rest of the prison. Their cells are their homes, with some of them even being allowed a pet cat. Benjamin Ritchie, who is sentenced to death for shooting and killing a policeman, gives a candid and frank interview to Trevor about why he should be in prison. He says: “I’m the kind of guy that does need to be in prison. Because I’m the kind of guy, if I get fired from a job, I’ll try to find a job the legal way, but if I can’t find a job, and I can’t pay my bills, I’ll get a gun and I’ll go pay my bills. And I won’t think nothing about it.” Trevor asks Ritchie where he thinks his life will end up, and he replies: “Either in a box or doing life. That’s my choice right there. I’ve got to watch my wife grown old through these bars.” Later, Ritchie sits down face to face with Trevor and describes how he ended up on death row. He explains that he was stealing car wheel trims when he was spotted by the police, who began chasing him. Ritchie says he fired his gun to scare the policeman away. He adds: “If that bullet had been less than an inch lower, he’d be alive today and I’d probably have a lengthy prison sentence, but I wouldn’t be on death row. I didn’t know I’d killed him until I saw it on the news, and that just destroyed me. I knew I’d hit him in the backyard, but I didn’t know he was dead.” Trevor asks Ritchie what it felt like when he heard that he was being sentenced to death. He says: “I was trying to portray a tough guy in court, so when they gave me the death sentence, I laughed at them. The prosecutor told everyone, ‘That’s the voice of evil.’ “Which I would agree with at the time, yes. I deserved the death penalty. I was young and I didn’t care about anybody at all but myself. “But when I was by myself it sunk in. It hit me hard. I put my face in my pillow and cried a little bit.” Trevor asks Ritchie how he will feel if he is eventually taken to be executed. He says: “I’d definitely have regret and remorse. But I’d also have a bit of defiance. ‘Why are you killing me? You said killing’s wrong, but you’re premeditatingly strapping me to a table and you’re going to poison me to death. You’re going to kill me.’ That’s what I would resent.” The first episode also sees Trevor meet Paul McManus, a man who killed his wife and two children. Trevor talks to McManus through his death row cell bars as the murderer reveals that he can’t read or write so he obsessively cleans his cell to pass the time. He also talks about the toll death row has exerted on him. Trevor accompanies McManus as he is shackled and dressed in red prison overalls, labelled with ‘death row’ on the back, then led to the prison hospital for his daily treatment for diabetes. It is the only way he is allowed to leave death row and step into the rest of the prison. Trevor also meets inmates out in the general prison population of Indiana State, who are amongst the most serious offenders. They are housed in the administrative segregation wing. The men here are violent gang members, drug dealers and sexual predators and their every move is monitored and carefully controlled. These prisoners are locked up for 23 hours a day. For the one hour a day where they are allowed to exercise, they are shackled and led to individual steel cages, and only un-shackled once inside, through a small hole in the bars. Trevor speaks to Ronald L Sanford, through the bars of his exercise cage. Sanford is serving 170 years for a double homicide he committed when he was just 13. So far he has served 23 years of his sentence. He explains to Trevor his regret at his vile crime. He says: “It’s tragic. It’s unspeakable. Even to reflect on it almost 25 years later. It will stay with me for the rest of my life and be an albatross around my neck.” Sanford explains to Trevor that, on the day of the murder, he and a friend were trying to earn money by mowing people’s lawns. When one homeowner said they didn’t want their lawn cutting, Sanford and his friend forced their way into the home.

Half of Brits paid for Christmas on credit
NEW Which? research has found half of people (46%) used credit cards, overdrafts, store cards or payday loans to cover Christmas spending this year, while over a third (36%) dipped into their savings. With energy and food costs continuing to rise, their survey into Christmas spending also found people aren’t feeling positive about the New Year either with more than half (54%) of people expecting their household budgets to be even tighter in 2013. The new Which? research also reveals that: · Over half (56%) spent

less on Christmas this year than last year, with 43% saying they significantly cut back spending. · Almost a quarter (22%) said they could only afford to pay for Christmas by using credit cards and overdrafts. · Those who dipped into their savings took out an average of £380 while those who used credit to cover Christmas costs borrowed an average of £301. · 12% used authorised overdrafts, 8% used store cards and 5% of people borrowed money from friends or family. · Half (48%) of people didn’t buy as much food and 45% bought less high quality food than last year because of increasing food prices. · Six out of 10
(61%) people felt this Christmas was financially tougher than last year, however three quarters (75%) said their Christmas wouldn’t be any worse for having less money to spend. · 92% agree that people generally feel under pressure to spend too much at Christmas. Which? executive director, Richard Lloyd, said: “Most of us like to splash out on family and friends at this time of year so the news that millions of people have drastically cut back on Christmas spending or taken out loans to cover Christmas costs shows just how squeezed household budgets are right now. It also shows how far we are from a consumer spending-led economic recovery.”

BBC Two is broadcasting a brandnew live wildlife event – Winterwatch. The Scottish Highlands act as a backdrop from Monday 14th January to capture the beauty, drama and spectacle of the UK’s most iconic animals as they battle to survive the most challenging time of year. Chris Packham, Martin Hughes-Games and Michaela Strachan will be presenting Winterwatch live from Aigas Field Centre in the spectacular Highlands of Scotland – a landscape that has been transformed by the seasonal changes. Winterwatch’s network of live cameras will monitor the animals’ every move throughout the week. They’ll be catching up with a beaver family, pine martens, the birds and the red squirrels

Gardening trends THE 2013 gardening influence/trend looks to be French. Why you ask, because Monty Don, the Gardeners’ World TV presenter has filmed a new series for the BBC on French gardens. Previously he has presented both Around the World in 80 Gardens in 2008 and Italian Gardens in 2011, both successful productions for the BBC.
He has tweeted that the series would be “similar to Italian ones but this time done by theme rather than geography”. The new French gardening series is set to broadcast at the end of March/beginning of April. Filming sites are said to have included Provence and Cevennes.

Why it’s especially painful for babies of first-time mums

H a p p y New Year to all my readers, and I hope your festivities went well!
I always start the first column of the year thinking about what lies ahead, hair-wise, and it seems that we are still in the current trend of styling, I saw something in a hair magazine recently about Brits leaving their hair natural, and leaving the house without styling it. But I can’t see this catching on, and those celebs sporting this “natural” look may just have been caught on an off-day. These days, I don’t get to see much British TV. But when I do, I’m

glad to see that those on the telly are always styled and groomed. We seem to be back to the days when people always bothered with their hair and kept up with their style and image, and I rarely see anyone nowadays without some sort of hair colour. This is the must-have hair accessory, and the colour is meant to complement the haircut and accent the style. And block colours (that is, only one colour) seem to be the most sought-after. This method of colouring will give shine and gloss to any style. Above all else, the condition of your hair is paramount. Without this, there is no basis for any style, and if you are going to skimp on
anything, it shouldn’t be your shampoo and conditioner. So, if you are going to do anything about your style this year, these are the basic rules: a good cut, a good colour, and good-quality, home-hair products. Remember these rules and you can’t go wrong. Even if you’re not in the mood to have a change of style, try to make a resolution to treat your hair a little better, stick to your regular 6-7 week appointments and listen to your stylist. We are here to look after your hair and resolve any problems you have with it. Your stylist should be there for you to explain and guide you through every aspect of your hair.
THE babies of new mums are said to feel more pain during routine vaccinations than those of experienced mothers.
And psychologists believe that the higher levels of pain could be because of the mother’s worry about the jabs, which is passed on to the infant, who senses the anxiety. Durham University’s Dr Nadja Reissland, who headed a preliminary study into the whole process, said: “Most mothers tend to feel a bit apprehensive about taking their baby to their first immunisations. “But for first-time mums, it is a bit more daunting. These results
show that a mother’s anxiety and distress is somehow ‘felt’ by the baby, who in turn shows more pain. “It is possible that new mums get more stressed about taking their babies for their immunisations - and how much pain they believe they’re in could put them off taking them for follow-up vaccinations.” “That’s why it is important for first-time mothers to feel reasonably comfortable about the experience to reduce anxiety in themselves and the babies.” Infants of new mothers showed significantly more pain before the needle insertion, as well as during the first vaccination, compared with children of experienced mothers. After the procedure, mothers were asked to
estimate the level of pain felt by their baby. The results, published in the Journal of Reproductive and Infant Psychology, also suggest that both new and experienced mothers over-estimated their child’s pain. Dr David Elliman, immunisation expert for the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, added: “Vaccinating children is important in order to protect them from infectious diseases. “It is common for children to become nervous just before doctors carry out these vaccinations, so the mother’s behaviour during this time is important in reducing the pain felt by their baby when being immunised, which is emphasised by this study.”

TEAM of A m e r i can health researchers believe that fizzy diet drinks could bring on depression if as many as four cans a day are consumed.
North Carolina’s National Institutes of Health, whose 10-year study involved more than 250,000 people, found that artificiallysweetened drinks were likely to increase the risk of depression by about one-third. Researchers also discovered that drinking coffee was also linked to depression, but the risk was 10% lower. Lead researcher Dr Honglei Chen said: “Our research suggests that cutting out or down on

complications like heart disease, strokes or vascular dementia. Having high blood pressure may damage the small vessels that supply the brain with blood, which carries essential oxygen and nourishment to the brain. Vascular dementia is the second most-common cause of dementia after Alzheimer’s disease and can occur if blood flow to the brain is reduced. Other, much larger research concerning 800,000 men, suggests another type of bloodpressure drug known as an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) may cut dementia risk, including Alzheimer’s disease, by as much as 50%. The smaller work, with the Japanese-American men, found that all

types of blood-pressure medication were better than no treatment regarding signs of dementia in the brain. However, men who had taken beta-blockers as their only bloodpressure medication had fewer abnormalities in their brains than those who had not been treated for hypertension, or who had received other medications. Study author Dr Lon White said: “With the number of people with Alzheimer’s disease expected to grow significantly as our population ages, it is increasingly important to identify factors that could delay or prevent the disease. “These results are exciting, especially since beta-blockers are a common treatment for high blood pressure.”
Dr Simon Ridley, head of research at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “Hypertension is a known risk-factor for Alzheimer’s and other causes of dementia, and keeping high blood pressure in check could be important for preventing these diseases. “This study suggests a link between the use of beta-blockers and fewer signs of dementia. But as the results of this study have yet to be published in full, it is not clear what caused this link.” He added: “With 820,000 people affected by dementia in the UK, and that number increasing, we urgently need to find ways to prevent the diseases that cause it, and that requires a massive investment in research.”

And the findings, in people living in the US, aged between 50-80, might not apply to other populations. The safety of sweeteners, like aspartame, has been tested extensively by scientists and is assured by regulators. Gaynor Bussell, of the British Dietetic Association, said: “They used to be called ‘artificial sweeteners’ and, unfortunately, the term ‘artificial’ has evoked suspicion. “As a result, sweeteners have been widely-tested and reviewed for safety and the ones on the market have an excellent track record of safety. “Sweeteners are used in a wide range of manufactured, sugar-free, reduced-sugar and lowcalorie foods and drinks. “These include aspartame, saccharine, acesulfame potassium (K), cyclamate and sucralose, but they are virtually free of calories and do not affect blood glucose levels. “But there are regulations about how much sweetener can be used
in foods and ‘acceptable daily limits’. She added: “However, the studies on them continue, and this one has thrown up a possibly link - not a cause and effect - with depression.” And she stressed that the study was a “oneoff” and did not mean that sweeteners caused depression. “For a start, people who suffer from depression may latch on to the idea that their sweetened beverages caused it,” said Ms Bussell. “This would add a bias to their reporting of past intake, especially as ‘soda’ in the US is demonised even more than in the UK. “Also, it may be that having ‘diet’ drinks is a marker for obesity or diabetes which, in themselves, can cause depression. “Non-calorific sweeteners can play a useful role in the diets of diabetics and those trying to lose weight, and it is certainly not advocated that people should replace their diet drinks with more coffee.” Beth Murphy, at the mental health charity Mind, said: “We would urge anyone affected by depression to follow the advice of their GP, or other medical professionals in regards to their treatment.”

Chilli salad bowls 397 calories per portion Ingredients 300g/10½oz lean minced beef (less than 10% fat) 1 small onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp hot chilli powder 2 tbsp tomato purée ½ tsp caster sugar 300ml/½ pint beef stock, made with 1 beef stock cube 4 large flour tortillas 1 tsp sunflower oil 1 romaine lettuce or 3

baby gem lettuces, leaves thickly shredded 3 ripe vine tomatoes, sliced 15cm/6in piece cucumber, sliced 4 spring onions, trimmed and sliced ½ lime, juice only 40g/1½oz mature cheddar 4 tbsp half-fat crème fraîche 4 tbsp fresh tomato salsa sauce flaked sea salt freshly ground black pepper Preparation method Put the minced beef, onion and garlic in a medium non-stick saucepan and cook over a high heat for five minutes, stirring with two wooden spoons to break up any clumps of meat. Stir in the cumin, coriander and chilli and cook for two minutes more, stirring constantly. Add the tomato purée, sugar and beef stock and bring to a simmer. Cover the pan and leave to simmer gently over a low heat for 30 minutes. Remove the lid and stir the chilli mixture occasionally. While the beef is cooking, prepare the tortilla bowls. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Take a sheet of foil about 1 metre/40in long and scrunch it up into a ball about 10cm/4in in diameter. Place it in the centre of a large baking sheet. Take a tortilla and brush the centre on one side with a little of the oil – this will help prevent it sticking to the foil. Drape the tortilla over the ball of foil, oil-side down, pinching and loosely pleating it to create a bowl shape. Bake for five minutes until the bowl shape is set and the tortilla is lightly crisped. Take the tortilla out of the oven and carefully remove it from the foil – it should be just cool enough to handle. Place the tortilla on an upturned tumbler and press to create a flat base on which to turn the tortilla once cold. The
tortilla should still be warm enough to mould to the shape of the glass. Leave to cool while you make the next bowl in the same way. Put each upturned tortilla on a plate as soon as it is ready. Remove the lid from the pan of beef and turn the heat up high. Cook for a further 4–5 minutes, stirring constantly, until most of the liquid has evaporated and the beef is looking fairly dry. Take the pan off the heat. Toss the lettuce with the tomatoes, cucumber, spring onions and lime juice. Divide the salad between the tortilla bowls and season with black pepper, then top with the hot mince. Coarsely grate some cheddar over each serving and add some crème fraîche and salsa. Tuck in while the beef is warm. Egg, bacon and asparagus flan 245 calories per portion Ingredients 1 bunch young asparagus, about 10 spears, trimmed 5 rashers dry-cure smoked back bacon 1 tsp olive oil 1 medium onion, finely sliced 25g/1oz cornflour 300ml/½ pint semiskimmed milk 3 free-range eggs, beaten 25g/1oz extra-mature Cheddar cheese, finely grated flaked sea salt freshly ground black pepper For the pastry 1 tbsp sunflower oil, plus extra for oiling the tin 4 sheets filo pastry, each about 32 x 38cm/13 x 15in Preparation method Slice the asparagus into lengths of about 5cm/2in. Half fill a large non-stick frying pan with water and bring to the boil. Add the asparagus, bring back to the boil and cook for a minute until just tender. Drain and rinse under running water until cold, then pat dry. Trim any fat off the bacon and cut into 1cm/½in strips. Return the pan
to a low heat, add the oil and gently fry the onion and bacon until lightly browned, stirring regularly. Add the onion and bacon to the bowl with the asparagus, toss lightly and leave to cool. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Place a baking tray in the oven to heat. Lightly oil a 20cm/8in loose-based fluted flan tin that’s about 3.5cm/1½in deep. Pour the rest of the oil into a small bowl. Place a sheet of filo pastry in the flan tin, pressing it firmly against the base and sides. Using the tip of a pastry brush, brush the pastry with a little oil then cover with a second pastry sheet at a right angle to the first. Brush with more oil and cover with a third sheet at the same angle to the first. Brush with the oil and cover with a fourth sheet, running in the same direction as the second. Roll and crumple the overhanding pastry back on to the rim of the tin, lifting slightly above it, and brush lightly with the remaining oil. Place the tin on the baking tray. Put the cornflour in a non-stick saucepan and stir in 50ml/2fl oz of the milk to make thin paste. Pour over 200ml/7fl oz of the milk and stir well. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly. Cook for a minute over a medium heat, stirring, until the sauce is thick and smooth. Season, then remove from the heat and stir in the rest of the milk to cool and loosen the sauce. Stir in the beaten eggs until thoroughly combined. Scatter half the asparagus, bacon and onion mixture over the base of the pastry case and pour the white sauce gently on top. Scatter the remaining asparagus and bacon mixture on top and press down lightly, then sprinkle evenly with the cheese. Bake on the preheated baking tray in the centre of the oven for 25-30 minutes or until the pastry is lightly browned and crisp and the filling is set. Take the flan out of the oven and leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes before removing. Serve warm or cold.

Trends for 2013
E
very year, 5.5 million passengers travel with Thomson & First Choice, they take a look back at 2012’s holiday trends and predictions for 2013. New research released by Thomson, reveals that over half of Brits (58%) have travelled abroad with their parents in the past 12 months, with a third (38%) of holiday goers also taking their children, making 2012 the year of the three generation holiday. Most Brits say a family holiday allows the generations to spend time together in a relaxed environment (68%) and nearly a quarter (23%) of those surveyed, confess to inviting their parents on holiday just to help look after the kids. As more people look for creative ways to spend quality time with their family, Thomson & First Choice predict the three generation holiday trend
will continue to grow in 2013. According to Thomson & First Choice research, the average UK holiday maker will spend a minimum of 8 hours researching their holiday online, with 35% of holidaymakers admitting to spending over 24 hours on their PC, laptop or tablet to find the perfect trip. Interestingly, sources of holiday inspiration
also shifted in 2012, with nearly a third (30%) of those surveyed admitting that pictures posted by their friends on Facebook and Twitter were a key influence when deciding on their next holiday destination. Nearly one in 10 (7%) of those questioned also said they regularly ask social network users for holiday advice, a figure which Thomson predicts is likely to
grow in 2013 as the number of people using Facebook and Twitter continues to increase. With an average of 3,000 bookings made per month by customers using a mobile device and traffic to the Thomson & First Choice website from iPads alone increasing at a whopping 437% every year, it is clear that a new way of booking is emerging for 2013.
A new trend for more active getaways also emerged following 2012’s summer of sport. A third (34%) of sun seekers said they were planning to or had taken up a sport following the Olympics, a trend reflected in the increased number of holidaymakers signing up for sports courses at Thomson’s Sensatori resorts. 2013 holiday hot spots

Spitfire collapses
Tenerife flights heading for East Midlands airport, last Monday, were delayed as the airport was closed for two hours after the undercarriage of a restored Spitfire collapsed as it was coming in to land. Flights were diverted to Birmingham in the afternoon and passengers then bused back to East Midlands. A spokesman for East Midlands airport said the aircraft had been removed from the runway and all flights had resumed and that the Spitfire pilot was not injured.

T’S the new year, and my Canarian Weekly Editor says I can have some fun with this first column of 2013.
So I’ve dipped into the Guinness Book of Records to put a smile on your face. Or a look of disbelief at some of the incredible machines I’ve come across in the world’s most famous record book. 1. The world’s longest car A 100ft limousine with 26 wheels, which features a swimming pool, complete with diving board, sun-deck, full-size water bed, satellite dish and even a helipad! It was designed by Californian Jay Ohrberg, but you’ll never see it bowling along the US motorways because it is used mainly for promotion work and films. And, believe it or not, it’s not that easy to drive. 2. Most powerful street car THE most powerful street-legal production car of all is the supersport version of the Bugatti Veyron, called the EB 16.4. It was built in 2010, has a 1001 horsepower W16 engine, which gives it a top speed of 267.856mph, and costs around 1.5 million euros (£1.22m). The original Veyron - named after Thirties French racing driver Pierre Veyron – can hit 253.81 mph (408.47 km/h) and was named Car of the Decade (20002009) by TV’s Top Gear. Chief designer was Hartmut Warkuss, and Volkswagen’s Jozef Kaba was responsible for the exterior. Also, much of the engineering work was carried out under the guidance of engineering chief Wolfgang Schreiber.

But although VW commissioned the car, it is sold through the Bugatti manufacturers only. The Veyron is also acknowledged as the best car in the world, not only for its speed but for its magnificent looks and opulent interior. 3. Smallest production car The Peel P50 was built on the Isle of Man in 1962 and cost just £198. It was immortalised on Top Gear by 6ft 5ins Jeremy Clark in 1998, when he not only drove it to the BBC but into a lift and up to his studio. Main problem with the

somewhat. The legendary P50, a mere 54in long and 41in wide, has held the “smallest” title for 50 years, and it’s doubtful whether it will ever be deposed. It features just one headlight and one door, and is powered by a diminutive powerplant. It was the brainchild of serial inventor and Peel Engineering Company owner Cyril Cannell and, incredibly, the remaining cars are now worth upwards of £10,000. He envisioned an ultracompact, exceptionallysmall, commuter car capable travelling at 40 mph while comfortably seating one adult carrying a briefcase. Production ceased in 1964 with only 50 models ever being turned out, which has obviously pushed the price up hugely for the remaining models. 4. Craziest roadster MY own favourite machine is the loony, “Bog Standard”, fastest bathroom in the world! It’s actually a motorcycle and sidecar, hidden under a bathroom set consisting of bath, sink, and laundry bin. It has a top speed of 42.25mph, and the controls are hidden in the sink. 5. Slowest car THE old Renault 5, which held me up for ages while driving from Los Cristianos to Las Charifas on the back road a few months ago.
World's Best parallel parker THEY said it couldn’t be beaten, but Ronny Wechselberger (aka Ronny C Rock) bettered Han Yue’s seemingly-unbreakable world record for the tightest parallel parking, set last year. Ronny slid into a gap measuring just 14 cm (5.51in) longer than the VW Up! he was driving for the attempt, which took place during the filming of
Germany’s Guinness World Records TV
show. It topped Han’s benchmark of 15cm
(5.91 in), which had stood since May.

ENERIFE finished the first half of the season by delivering a fine Reyes day present to their long- suffering supporters.
They are top of the table at the turn, four points clear after all the other sides in the top five lost - and there is a rediscovered swagger. It was almost the perfect afternoon in Santa Cruz. The festive break seems to have reinvigorated Alvaro Cervara’s side as they swotted away a strong looking Salamanca side - onpaper at least - who came into the match as the league’s top scorers. How they had that honour, only the old man upstairs with the

And sides have now worked him out. Marti's pace and workrate make him a better bet, especially later in the season when the play-offs are here. Tenerife will need to mix things up. That aside, it was a great day, capped off by results elsewhere. Over-rated second-
beard knows. I’ve seen Salamanca a few times over the years and they have always been a handful. They are a strong physical side. All power and pace. This rabble from Sunday were, well the word is pants. They are not fit to lace the boots of players such as Quique Martin who, even at 40, could walk into this side. They have former Tenerife striker Igor leading their line. Two seasons ago he “played” in our relegation season as we dropped to this “standard”. He was rubbish, failing to trouble the scorers. If anything he has gone backwards. He was a joke on Sunday. Maybe they just had an off-day; maybe they are just poor (certainly the favourite in a league bereft of real quality). Either way, Tenerife strolled this. They bagged two, both from the improving Suso, yet on another day it could have been six. Both goals were carved the same way

Neil keeps Gaffers on course WE’VE known for a few weeks that it will be a two-horse race to win Division One of the Oasis Fm pool league, but it would take a brave man to predict who will come out on top. After the festive break Tenerife Hammers A were enjoying a routine win at Terrace A, while Gaffers A were in a real battle with Phoenix Knights. The Los Abrigos side could be higher up the league, but they showed their true form as they gave Gaffers the world of trouble. The hosts needed a “worldy” 7-ball clearance from Ashley and a final-frame Neil win to sneak home 7-5. Third-place Phoenix Potters were also pushed all the way by Dreamers. They rallied late on to win the last two frames
to take the spoils 7-5. You didn’t need to be Nostradamus to predict Tenerife Hammers C and Inn The Pink A would have a tight battle. The draw was a fair result, and hat-tip to Terrace Bar. They pulled off only their third win of the season at Toscales A. The Peacocks were also back in the win column, their 8-4er at La Caña mirroring their September success. Next Door started the new year with a bang as they smashed Toscales B 11-1. Dom’s win over Craig was the only success for Toscales. There is a real battle to join them in promotion and Exiles A helped their cause with an 8-4 victory over Gaffers B. Inn The Pink B were delighted with their win at Treehouse B, while Palms B are working up a head of steam.
