riving licences issued in the UK are still acceptable in Spain. They will not, we repeat, WILL NOT, need changing for a Spanish licence from tomorrow (Saturday). You have again been misinformed by unresearched articles in print and online by other publications.
Urban myth, jungle drums, or bad reporting, call it what you will but the information circulating for a week has caused panic among the expatriate community. And it is wrong. Worried residents have been contacting Canarian Weekly asking us the real situation, as they have been concerned that they will not be able to drive their cars legally after 19th January.
Tragedy for pilot, and the luckiest men alive See page 12
Direccion General de Trafico told Canarian Weekly: “There is no imminent action needed by those holding a UK driving licence and living in Spain.” They went on tell us that the irresponsible reporting of the new EU directive by another publication has forced them to issue a press release clarifying the new rules and regulations. The European directive,
which is being bandied about, dates back over six years ago to 2006. The directive’s objective is for all European member states, of which there are currently 27, to issue a single model: one driving licence throughout Europe. Ultimately, the aim is to replace the 110 types of licence currently in circulation. It means that you Continued on page 3

Veronicas spoof evokes mass fury 'Fools' story widely condemned by tourist board, town halls, tour operators, business owners and tourists.
A
Spanish April Fools story about the demolition of the Veronicas strip has left business owners, workers and tourists furious. The Town Hall and tourist board were aghast at the report. It began as a simple joke, understood mainly by the Spanish speaking community; to others, it caused horror and fury on reading. The story has potentially damaged the livelihood of over 30 businesses in the Veronicas area, with hundreds of workers fearing for their jobs,
and put into jeopardy the numbers of tourists visiting the area as some are changing their holiday destination as a result of unfounded reports spreading to online forums and social networking sites on the internet. Canarian Weekly have been in discussion with the authorities and the message confirmed by Arona Ayuntamiento is that Veronicas is NOT being demolished and that there are currently NO immediate plans to make any changes. Veronicas originally was constructed in the mid 1970’s and was originally designated to be shops and restaurants. Now it’s a mecca for the younger tourist looking for
outstanding nightlife. As the years have rolled on the Veronicas image has received a lot of bad press, and has been the topic of much rumour and speculation. Even now television production
companies contact Canarian Weekly asking for help to recreate the ‘Tenerife Uncovered’ experience, to which they receive short shrift. But, this time the bad press which the iconic Veronicas areas
received was unjustified. The four separate buildings which make up Veronicas known as ‘the strip’ now play host to a number of businesses which target the 18-35 year old tourist. The area is cleaner and tidier than many UK city centres at the weekend, not to mention the investment in new venues, cleaning up the strip, and pedestrianising the surrounding area. Niel Hayhoe, Area Manager, Holiday Experience, TUI told Canarian Weekly, “Veronicas is very popular with our younger clientele staying within the area.” Thomas Cook informed us that, “Club 18-30, one of the UK’s most famous
youth brands is moving back to Tenerife this summer. The summer season begins on the 25th May and goes through to the 20th September.” Obviously, Veronicas is the ideal place for that market to visit during the evening. One business owner who wished not to be named said, “We all love a good joke but front page headline news in a Tenerife based English language newspaper aimed at British tourists and residents about our bars being demolished in three months, is not a joke” Worry not, Veronicas is not being turned into an ecological banana plantation – it’s still the place for a great night out!
Licence lies: Locals livid!
From front page. have freedom to drive throughout the European Union. Tomorrow (19th Jan), the European Union Third Directive on driving licences comes into force. All new driving licences from this date will have to meet the terms of the Directive. If you are a British expatriate living for more than 185 days in Spain, in our case, Tenerife, you need to carry with you your UK photocard licence, plus originals of your personal identification documents. This point is debatable because many of us prefer to carry photocopies. That’s okay, but, if stopped by the Police you will be asked to present your originals at the Police station. There is no need for your driving licence to be stamped or inscripted as is the term any longer, Trafico have confirmed this to
the Canarian Weekly. If you are a British expat and hold a photocard licence (DVLA have been issuing them since 1998) the expiry date on the front of your licence refers to the photograph, and they last 10 years. So, when this is due for renewal, you will have to renew your licence in the country in which you reside, in our case Tenerife. But only when it’s due for renewal. The expiry dates on the reverse of your licence refer to your driving entitlements, and most UK licences need renewing when you attain 70 years of age. Again, if this applies to you, then you would apply for a licence in the country in which you currently reside and not where your licence was originally issued. This means that from 19/01/2015, if you are an expatriate resident in another EU state from which your licence was issued, you must apply
18th January - 24th January 2013
for a licence that has an expiry date. However, if for any reason you are an expatriate and, for whatever reason, you have no expiry date on your licence, e.g.
a Belgian licence, then you must renew your licence IN THE COUNTRY IN WHICH YOU RESIDE within two years of being resident. The changes are being
introduced wholesale across the EU. They will mainly affect new licences and drivers of other vehicles such as motorcyclists, lorry, bus and minibus drivers, and those who tow trailers. The new rules affecting drivers are a bid to harmonise licences. They include changes to what you can drive, the minimum age from which some vehicles can be driven, and driving licence card validity periods for some driver groups. At the same time a newstyle driving licence will be introduced. The benefit of the unified licence is that it will create transparency for citizens, police forces and administration services. For existing drivers, the new rules will not take away your entitlement to drive if it was granted before 19th January 2013. However, some of the new rules will affect you, especially if you drive
lorries or buses. As for new drivers from 19th January 2013 - if they apply for provisional entitlement to drive, or pass a driving test from that date, the new rules will apply to them. The new-style licence will look different from the current licence. All vehicle categories will be listed on the back of your licence, with dates against those you are entitled to drive or ride. You won’t be entitled to drive any category of vehicle that has lines instead of dates. Your photocard licence is accompanied by a paper counterpart. The counterpart will contain your provisional driving entitlements, driving offences and other relevant information. In conclusion, the situation with driving licences is very similar to that of health and tax; you cannot have a foot in both camps; you need to decide in which country you are resident: here in Tenerife or the UK?

E N E R IFE’S Iceland stores have reacted sharply to the news that horsemeat has been found in beefburgers in some leading UK supermarkets. It has also been discovered in meat processing plants
in both the UK and Ireland. But officials stress that there is no threat to public health. As a precaution, Iceland branches on the Island have withdrawn the following items from their shelves, although it is not proven that these products include traces of horsemeat. Iceland Quarter Pounder (frozen): bestbefore date 06/08/2013 PLU code 21244 (the

Meanwhile, Ireland’s Food Safety Authority (FSAI) has tested for the presence of horse and pig DNA, while the Tesco Everyday Value Beef Burger analysed was found to contain 29.1% horsemeat.
Tests on products containing beef sold in Aldi, Iceland, Lidl and Dunnes Stores have also uncovered low levels of horse DNA. And in our Iceland stores, there are posters explaining the product recall to customers. If you have purchased these products and wish to return them to the store, you will be given a full refund. However, you may wish to eat them anyway!

Carnival Queen candidates
CW THE EDITOR SAYS... Email: editor@canarianweekly.com
A licence to please
FOURTEEN aspiring Santa Cruz Carnival Queen candidates met this week. Santa Cruz Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez thanked both their sponsors and designers. The Carnival Queen contest will be
held at the Recinto Ferial in the capital on the 6th February, from 21:30. José Manuel Bermúdez gave a boquet of flowers to each candidate and congratulated them for taking part in the most
important festival of the people of Santa Cruz. “Enjoy every moment and seize this unique experience, because it is a big responsibility but you will remember for a lifetime,” said the mayor. All of the councilors
appreciated the effort expended by the sponsors and designers, “whose enthusiasm and desire to work spreads throughout the city.” In turn, they also wished good luck to the applicants.
Russians get the bug!
AT this time of year, Tenerife attracts all the cold-country tourists, so we need to make them smile. And who says the Russians can’t have fun? Well they proved they can when a group of them visited Puerto Colon, in Las Americas, for a spin on the waterbuggys. The business, run by Brummie Jay
and Northern Nigel, is proving to be of huge appeal to all nations, from Chinese, Americans, Germans and French, to the good old Brits. Their company, floated only last summer, just keeps on attracting everyone from everywhere, especially after the recent success of the waterbuggys on ITV’s

SOMETIMES, life can get quite awkward producing a newspaper, especially when we’re trying to separate the wheat from the chaff, along the way we are fed a lot of misinformation ‘disturbance’ from various quarters. When this happens - not too often, thank goodness - we do our utmost to research the subject and events again and again if necessary for the sake of accuracy, and to bring you the reader the true facts. Sometimes, it is impossible to ascertain these facts in time, and we generally drop the story. We were aware of the Spanish Driving Licence story last week, but it didn’t make sense, we made initial enquiries, but couldn’t get to the bottom of it. Especially when at the time Trafico advised us that they didn’t have the full information. So as our print deadline loomed
we decided to put it on hold. As it transpired, we were correct to set it aside and continue working on it for this week’s paper. It took several hours of phoning various sources, including Trafico, who were by then indeed aware of the controversy it was causing. So, as with all stories it’s quite a relief when the truth emerges. One member of my staff told me: “It frightened me to death. I had visions of not driving again until I had learned sufficient Spanish even to pass the written driving test over here.” I’m sure that sentiment was echoed throughout the bars and cafes in the South. That’s why I am delighted to convey the news to all of you on our front page that you needn’t worry about tomorrow’s 19th January so-called deadline for securing a Spanish licence. As always we aim to bring you information on what we think will be informative and newsworthy. Until next week…

Cigs increase 15 cents a packet BRITISH American Tobacco (BAT) has increased the price of two of its cigarette brands by 15 cents per pack. Pall Mall and Lucky Strike will increase from 3.95 euros and 4.10 euros respectively to 4.10 euros and 4.25 euros. BAT has said that prices have increased to stay in line with the competition after Altadis increased the
cost per packet of cigarettes by 20 cents, although then lowered it by five cents to match the price rises applied by Philip Morris and JTI. Sources from BAT say: “We believe that by putting our prices up, we have done our bit to help the State with its tax collection objectives – even though it is damaging to us in business terms.”

T
HE Arona International Music Festival 2013 takes place from the 2nd February until the 16th February. It promises to be quite a busy two weeks period with not only performances but the chance to play an instrument. If you would like to learn to play the flute, clarinet or trombone even the tuba then there will be lessons from 10:00 to 14:00 hours and from 16:00 to 18:00 hours. You’ll need to enroll so go to the website www.arona.org. Event organisers said, “In times like these it is not easy to organise an event like the Arona International Music Festival 2013. Widespread difficulties
being experienced by society require a rethinking of many things, but culture should not be affected by outside circumstances. This is the main reason why the School of Music and Dance of Arona, the Culture Patronage of the Municipality of Arona, the Tourism Patronage and the Cultural Association “Arona Concert Band” after last years success have once again set this challenge. To bring the brightest performers and teachers in the musical world to our island. On this occasion we will have the presence of: Philippe Lergourgues (flute) from “L´Ecole Normale de Musique de París” and “Conservatoire National de Région de Saint Maur des Fossés” - France , Javier Llopis (clarinet) from “Conservatorio
18th January - 24th January 2013
Profesional de Música de S/C de Tenerife” Spain, Jacques Mauger (trombone) from “Conservatoire á Rayonnement Régional de París” and “H.E.M. de Genéve” Switzerland, Roland Szentpáli (solo tuba “Hungarian National Philarmonic Orchestra” - Budapest), Krisztina Fejes (piano) from
Hungary and Eglantina Grapshi (piano) from Switzerland, not only to enjoy their music, but also to use their knowledge within the courses in the festival. It is for this reason that we invite you to the Arona Music Festival, to ensure that we all succeed in this musical adventure.”
Terciado confirmed that the government and his organisation are discussing a “new contract for young people in order to make this sector of the population more dynamic.” Terciado noted that the minimum wage, 645 euros would be considered
a reference although as time goes by the salary could improve as workers gain more experience. He added that employers would seek “further development of wage moderation and internal flexibility of companies.” Data released by Eurostat, the statistics office of the European Union (EU) showed that Spain recorded the highest unemployment rate in November both in general terms and youth, among member states, which stood at 26.6 percent and 56.5 percent respectively. According to latest data published by the government, there were 4.85 million jobless in Spain in December 2012, although Eurostat said the unemployment topped 6.1 million in the country in November.

Arona still backing sports clubs
A
R O N A Council has been forced to cut its grants budget by 28% as the recession bites even deeper, but grass-roots sport has been unaffected. A total of 381,601 euros has been set aside to subsidise 36 sports clubs in the municipality, and this year it embraces 20 sports - athletics, motorsport, basketball, handball, baseball, boxing, adapted sports, rugby, football, roller hockey, judo, Canarian wrestling, swimming, skating, taekwondo,
tennis, diving, sailing, volleyball and even pigeon-racing. Sierra Monica, who chairs Arona Sports Board, said: ”Despite the enforced reductions, we have prioritised grassroots sport and have kept the same subsidies as in previous years. “The government’s intention is to continue to contribute to the maintenance of sports associations in Arona.” The sum approved will be aimed at developing youth football teams and federated seniors, and supporting all the council’s federated sports bodies. Elite athletes in particular will benefit, as will the sport of Canarian wrestling.
Accion’s class for pupils ACCION del Sol are planning to visit schools and colleges interested in educating children about the protection and welfare of animals. The presentation lasts about two hours and is a free service provided by Accion’s sponsors Aktiontier, the huge German charity organisation. The children will learn many important issues concerning animal welfare, including maintenance, care, feeding, basic veterinary, handling dogs - and the true story of one lucky stray dog, which has a happy ending. Accion director Marion Gonzaalez and one of the refuge’s vets will be there to answer the children’s questions. The dates available are between 14-23rd March and 6-24th May, and schools and colleges should contact the refuge on 922 778 630 for more information if they are interested in this educational programme. Accion also offers lectures and presentations at the refuge and if you have any queries about the activities or registration, contact Marion on the same number, or email teneriffa@aktiontier.org or acciondelsol@gmail.com

The next fund-raiser for the refuge takes place on 3rd February at 2pm. This will be a coffee-andcake afternoon in which animal lovers will get
a chance to meet likeminded people for an afternoon of fun. Activities will include a guided tour of the refuge, a theatre animation show, lots of yummy cakes and much more so another date for your diary. The refuge has seen a large increase of dogs in extremely poor condition brought into the refuge by Protection Civil. Visit our Facebook page Aktion Tier Accion for more information on dogs available for adoption, and for more details on some of the many dogs coming into the refuge. The Dalmatian pictured was brought into the refuge a few weeks ago. It is micro-chipped
but the phone number is obsolete. This example serves as a reminder to all dog owners that if you do change phone numbers or addresses, please contact Zoocan. It means that if your pet is lost, it can be traced and returned to you. The refuge has also seen a large influx of unwanted puppies following the Christmas season. The situation here in Tenerife is reaching serious proportions, with all the refuges full to overflowing, so if you can help in any way, or you are looking to adopt a dog, then please visit Accion del Sol. The opening hours are Monday- Friday (3-6pm) or call 922 778 630 for more information.
People’s Party not so popular IN a recent survey by Metroscopia, only 29.8 per cent said they would vote for Spain’s ruling People’s Party (PP), the lowest level of support since the November 2011 election when it won an absolute majority and over half of the vote. Spain’s economy is expected to continue to contract through 2013 and protests at austerity measures are on the rise, with over one in four workers unemployed. The economy has shrunk for three of the last four years after the bursting of a property bubble destroyed consumer and business sentiment and left the government applying budget cuts to control one of the euro zone’s highest public deficits. While the poll showed growing disillusionment with Spain’s leaders - 84 per cent said they had little or no confidence in Prime Minister Mariano
Rajoy the main Socialist opposition also saw shrinking support. Just 23.3 per cent said they would vote for the Socialists, in power from 2004 to 2011, down from 28.7 per cent during the 2011 election. Meanwhile, support jumped for the smaller left-wing IU party, up to 15.6 per cent in January from 7.7 per cent a year ago, and the centrist UPyD, rising to 10.2 per cent from 4.6 per cent in January 2012. The poll also showed that 74 per cent of those surveyed did not believe the government knew how to resolve the economic crisis, while 96 per cent said there was a great deal of corruption amongst Spanish politicians.

Heyerdahl sets sail again towards another Oscar?
T
HOR HEYERDAHL, the renowned adventurer with major connections to Tenerife, won an Oscar in 1951 - and he is on course to win another next month. The Norwegian, who will forever be linked to the Guimar Pyramids over here, set out in 1947 on an epic voyage to prove a theory he held after a trip to Polynesia, which convinced him that the culture there bore traces of South American cultures. His journey entailed travelling on a balsawood raft, some 8,000 kilometres across the Pacific Ocean from Peru to Raroia, and manned by a six-man team. His voyage became known as the Kon Tiki Expedition, and his purpose was to prove that Polynesia could be populated from South America. He told author Per Lillieström, who wrote the 1999 book No Boundaries: “I travelled on the reed boat with a crew of all races, partly to show my contempt for racism.” Despite encountering a lot of opposition, his theory turned out to be right. And wrong! Heyerdahl documented his epic journey in a book - one of 20 he
wrote, which were all published in 50 languages - and he won his Oscar in 1951 for his film Kon Tiki, made the previous year about his voyage. Incredibly, 61 years later, in 2012, another film, also called Kon Tiki, was made about the same expedition. Now, it has been nominated for an Oscar at next month’s Academy Awards, for Best Foreign Language film, and
has already been sold to 50 countries. Heyerdahl, an ethnologist (the branch of anthropology which deals with the origin, distribution, and characteristics of human racial groups), was born on 6th October 1914 in Larvik. He died at the age of 87 in 2002 in Italy, where he was on holiday with family friends, having spent his last years in Tenerife. Hadia Tajik Norway’s
Minister of Culture, said: “It will be exciting to follow the Oscar ceremony on 24th February.” The film, released in Norwegian cinemas last August, sold 164,191 tickets the first weekend, having previously beaten all records for a film premiere in that country. It is the most expensive documentary ever made in Norway, and it faces stiff competition from Amour, No and A
Internet dependent ACCORDING to the just released “Information Society in Spain” report for 2012, Spain is one of the European countries with the biggest internet dependence. More than six million people, one quarter of all users, are permanently connected to the
Page 10
internet in one way or another. Smartphone penetration in Spain is 63.2 per cent, the highest figure in the European Union and one of the highest in the world, the report revealed, while 43 per cent of Spanish users now use their cell phones to access the internet, triple the amount of 2011. In less than a year, the number of people with online access at home and on the move has
increased 300 per cent. In terms of frequency, 89 percent of Spanish smartphone owners say they connect to the net daily. Meanwhile, 72.6 per cent of Spaniards say they connect each day, a modest 1.2 per cent rise. And it is not just cellphones and PCs. Users employ an average of 2.4 devices to go online, from their TVs, which have increased as access points by 800 per
cent, to tablet computers (up 500 per cent) and eBooks (a 300 per cent rise). The downside of this growing digital world is that personal communication is suffering. The report found that users communicate with a greater number of people via microblogging sites such as Twitter and social networks (28.6 and 18.6 people, respectively) than in person (16.15 people).
Royal Affair, the other nominations in the Best Foreign Language Film class
Tenerife residents in the northern town of Guïmar will almost certainly be familiar with Heyerdahl because he lived there from 1994 and actually developed the Pyramid Park, which is regarded as one of the major landmarks on the Island. It was, and still is, a fascinating exhibition, showing how he took advantage of several disciplines across the divide between science and social science. Thor used to take daily trips to the Pyramid Park from the orange orchard, where he settled with his third wife. Thor, also known as an archaeologist, biologist, anthropologist, ethnographer and zoologist, studied biology at the University of Oslo, doing his fieldwork in anthropology. Curiously, he did not like to be called an adventurer, since he maintained his sole purpose was research. But for the story of his epic expedition to gain another Oscar, 20 years after his death, would surely be the adventure to end all adventures!
Vodafone cut jobs VODAFONE has announced that it is to launch a labour force adjustment plan across Spain. The move would reduce Vodafone’s workforce by 25 per cent, cutting nearly 1,000 jobs, newspaper ABC reports, citing unnamed union sources. According to the same sources, the plan is expected to be presented to the Spanish Ministry of Labour towards the
end of this month. The workforce reduction measure seeks to counteract the decline in revenues affecting the Vodafone group’s Spanish unit. Vodafone Spain reported service revenue down 12 per cent year-on-year on an organic base and 20.8 per cent on a reported base in the fiscal first half to the 30th September, to 1.9 billion euros from 2.5 billion in September 2011.

pay into pot in Spain THE Spanish tax authorities have opened a nationwide probe to scrutinise the tax affairs of successful poker players, who are required to report and pay income tax on their winnings. Tax investigators are said to be looking back as far as 2010, crossreferencing publiclyavailable tournament results databases, both for live and online tournaments, against Spanish players’ tax returns, to identify irregularities.
Spain recently liberalised its gambling market, but this seems to have coincided with a much more aggressive stance by the tax authorities in policing the sector. In 2012, retroactive tax settlements were negotiated with prospective gambling licensees, in a bid to apply tax laws dating back to 1966 and 1977, which previously only impacted offline gambling activities. Bwin agreed to pay back taxes worth 33.6 million euros in exchange for a license last June. It appears that next on the tax man’s agenda is the Spanish player base.

Cowell says no to X Factor S
IMON COWELL, mastermind behind The X Factor, will not be returning to the UK show’s judging panel. At this week’s launch of the Britain’s Got Talent auditions in Cardiff, the music mogul told fans that he would carry on overseeing and judging the American version. Since Cowell, Cheryl Cole and Dannii Minogue left the show’s panel in 2010, ratings have dwindled and fans have besieged ITV for his return. There was even talk of a “dream” judging panel for the 10th anniversary of the show this year,
consisting of the viewers’ favourite four judges since the start of The X Factor in 2004. Cowell felt that if he did make a comeback, the US version would suffer as he split his time between the two continents. After careful consideration, however, it seems that he has decided to stand by his two-year-old US show instead. Despite his decision, there are believed to be other new twists to keep viewers happy. The judging panel currently comprises Gary Barlow, Louis Walsh, Tulisa Contostavlos and Nicole Scherzinger. But in a bid to shake up the show, it is said that Tulisa will
be axed in favour of show stalwart Sharon Osbourne making a dramatic return. Richard Holloway, The X Factor’s executive producer, has previously spoken of his desire to get a Cowell comeback. “I’d love Cowell to come back because he’s the best judge in the world, he said. “If we can find a way to reintroduce him, we will. But it is impossible for him to be in two places. “There is not one element we will not be looking at carefully. From judges and start times to auditions and glitzy productions. “After all, it’s our 10th anniversary coming up and we want it to be amazing.”
Celebrities boost the beach breaks BRITISH Airways has seen a boost in bookings to celebrity-favourite destinations in its January sale, thanks to stars uploading pictures of their holidays to popular social media sites over the Christmas and New Year period. The Caribbean was overflowing with celebrities, which may account for the recent increase in holiday bookings to Barbados and St Lucia – both up by at least 130 per cent compared to last year. A favourite with the rich and famous, Barbados welcomed Simon Cowell, Coleen Rooney, Olly Murs and native Rihanna to its crystal clear waters,
while St Lucia, already a favourite with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, was the choice for Gwyneth Paltrow who posted pictures of her family enjoying a blissful beach break. Meanwhile the draw of the ‘Spanish Caribbean’ attracted Alexa Chung, Pixie Geldof and Nick Grimshaw who partied in Puerto Rico together, while couples Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux , Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, and Jessica Alba and Cash Warren enjoyed romantic breaks to Mexico. Claire Bentley, British Airways Holidays managing director, said: “The start of the year is always the busiest time
for bookings – people are back at work and need something to look forward to. The wet weather over Christmas, combined with lots of enticing pictures of celebrities on holiday has clearly influenced the rise we’re seeing in beach holidays.” The airline has also seen a rise in bookings to Hawaii, up by 100 per cent in the past year. Blessed with beautiful beaches and natural beauty, it’s no surprise that it’s popular with the jet-set, including Katy Perry and John Mayer, Steven Tyler , Jude Law and even the President of the United States, who all vacationed on the islands during the recent holidays.

Tragedy for pilot, and the luckiest men alive
T
HE horrific helicopter crash, in which the pilot and a passerby were killed on Wednesday, could have been far worse. It occurred at the height of the morning rush-hour near the busy Vauxhall Station, in central London. The tragedy could have been magnified because the two men detailed to man the newly-built tower crane, which was clipped by the helicopter, both overslept. Experienced pilot Pete Barnes, killed instantly, was on his way to pick up a customer in the helicopter, which crashed to the ground amid freezing fog and poor visibility.
Matthew Wood, 39, from Sutton, Surrey, who was walking to work, also died. Twelve other people were injured in the incident. Five were taken to hospital for treatment, and one was detained overnight with a suspected broken leg. But two men were left counting their blessings. Crane workers Richard Moule and Nicki Biagioni, both from Essex, were hurrying to work after
18th January - 24th January 2013
over-sleeping when the disaster struck. They should have been in the crane’s cabin at 7am, ready for a day’s work. Mr Moule, a father of two from Harlow told the Daily Mail: “It was the first time I’ve been late since starting this job three years ago. I just woke up late. Call it divine intervention if you like. “The first thing I did was call my wife, Stephanie, and tell her, ‘You’ll be hearing about
this but I’m okay’. She gave me a big hug when I got back home.” It is understood that Mr Biagioni, from Ongar, was late because his four-year-old son, who normally wakes him up, slept in. His wife, Leanna, told the Sun: “Nicki gets a lift to a certain level and then climbs a ladder the rest of the way. If he’d been climbing, he would have died from the fall for certain. It’s too horrible to think about.” Commander Neil Basu, of the Metropolitan Police, said: “It was something of a miracle that this was not many, many times worse.” Dozens of trains, packed with hundreds of commuters, were passing through the area via the busy station throughout the rushhour. But train drivers were forced to stop their engines because
of the plumes of smoke drifting across the tracks and hampering their vision. Mr Barnes, who flew a helicopter in Saving Private Ryan and the James Bond film Die Another Day, had also been an air-ambulance pilot. He had requested to divert via Heathrow air traffic control and land at Battersea Heliport because of the dreadful weather when tragedy struck at 8am. It was the first-ever fatal helicopter crash in central London since records began in 1976. The aircraft was following the River Thames route, which runs by Vauxhall, and Mr Barnes was heading from Redhill, Surrey, to Elstree in Hertfordshire, to collect an executive client. Witnesses reported extremely low cloud at
the time, suggesting the pilot may not have seen the crane, which was barely visible from street level. At least two cars were hit by debris, and one man had a lucky escape, diving out of his car just before it burst into flames after being struck by the fierce flames. The area was evacuated immediately because of the precarious position of the crane at the top of the tower. Prime Minister David Cameron said in the Commons that he was “saddened” by the deaths of Mr Barnes and Mr Wood. “The whole House will wish to join with me in sending their thanks to the emergency services for their rapid and professional response to this situation,” he added.

Mobiles ready to get cash-friendly!
M
OST people in the UK will be able to pay for items using their mobile phone from next year. Banks and financial institutions representing 90% of current accounts will launch the country’s first industry-wide mobile payment service in the spring. Using a process similar to texting, people will be able to sign up to send and receive payments using their own number. And the good news is that it will be done without the need to disclose their bank account details. The Payments Council, which is the industry body leading the project, believes that using mobiles to buy goods and services, and also send money to friends and family, will become the norm because of the scheme’s popularity among banks. It is a bonus for shopaholics because it means
they will be able to leave their cash and cards at home. Eight financial insti-
tutions have already committed themselves to offering the service, while discussions are
underway for others to join. Although there are current ways to pay us-
ing a mobile, the Council stress that the project is the first featuring the potential to link
every bank account in the country with a mobile number. Chief executive Adrian Kamellard said: “This new service will offer a simple, secure way to split a bill for dinner, receive money from a friend or pay a tradesman without needing to remember, or share, account details.” Before the launch, customers will be invited to register via their online banking service, mobile app or other approved method. Details of the industry-wide registration process and the precise launch date will be announced later. More than 5,000 consumers took part in Payments Council research, which revealed that the service is likely to prove most popular with smartphone users, who accounted for 67% of those surveyed. One in three smartphone users said he or she was either “definitely” or “extremely likely” to sign up to the service.
Britain bracing itself for the big white-out FORECASTERS in the UK are predicting the heaviest snowfall of the winter will land today (Friday). The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for the East Midlands, NorthWest and South-West England, Wales, the West Midlands and Yorkshire & Humber. Much of the UK has experienced bitterly cold nights this week, for
Page 14
with temperatures over East Anglia dropping to numbing -11C. Snow fell in parts of Wales and the North East in midweek and was expected to hit the South-West before pushing across the rest of the UK. Up to 10 inches of snow could fall on higher ground, and between 3-5 inches on lower ground. Temperatures will remain below zero in most parts, while blizzards and strong winds are set to make conditions treacherous
on the roads. Motorists have been warned that heavy snow will arrive before today’s morning rush-hour, some train services will almost certainly be cancelled, while some airports will be forced to close, as will schools not already shut down. Further snow showers are expected tomorrow (Saturday), particularly along Eastern coastal areas, with lighter snow showers on Sunday in the Midlands and northwards. Sky News weather presenter Jo Wheeler,
said: “Temperatures will drop, fog will thicken in the East, and there’ll be a widespread frost. “As the rain spreads across Wales and the South-West, it will pave the way for significant snowfall, potentially up to 25cm over exposed uplands. “There’ll also be strong winds, with gusts of between 5060mph. which will lead to blizzard conditions for a while.” The freezing weather has already caused havoc on the roads, with the AA reporting about
1,000 breakdowns an hour. And in Norfolk, 93 schools remain closed. The London Fire Brigade has also urged caution during the “Arctic blast”. Firefighters rescued an elderly man from a serious blaze in Wembley, North London, on Wednesday. It was thought to have been caused by a halogen heater being placed too close to flammable items. Last week, fire-fighters battled flames in Fulham, West London, after an electric blanket
was left on for the weekend. And police said pensioner Graham Clark, found dead in the street near his home in the village of Buxhall in Suffolk on Tuesday afternoon, may have collapsed while clearing snow from his driveway. British Gas is expecting a “huge spike of activity” for its home service engineers this weekend, predicting around 20,000 call-outs. And we’re complaining that it’s pretty chilly over here right now!

Shock as Dreamliners grounded
B
OEING’S 787 Dreamliners have been grounded by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for safety reasons following an emergency landing by one plane in Japan. The flight ban was imposed by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and two Japanese airlines after a sixth problem with the aircraft in under two weeks. The decision comes just days after Federal Aviation administrator Michael Huerta and Transport Secretary Ray LaHood declared the plane safe. An American official said the planes would remain on the ground until the risk of possible battery fires was sorted out. But the Federal Agency says it will work with Boeing on a plan to allow the Dreamliners to “resume operations as quickly and safely as possible”. The EASA implements safety directives when they are issued by the country where the aircraft was originally designed - in America in this instance. A burnt-out power unit battery from a Japan Airlines Boeing 787 was
said to be responsible for the latest setback. Qatar Airways chief Akbar al Baker has also decided to ground the company’s five aircraft, saying: “In light of recent events surrounding the Boeing 787 Dreamliner worldwide, we are actively working with Boeing and the regulators to restore full customer confidence. “Qatar Airways will resume 787 operations when we are clear that the aircraft meets the full requirements of the Airworthiness Directive and our standards, which assure the safety of our passengers and crew at all times.” All Nippon Airlines (ANA) announced it was grounding all 17 of its 787s after one was forced to make an emergency landing in west Japan on Wednesday. And Japan Air Lines Co Ltd (JAL) is also suspending all Dreamliner flights over safety concerns. Public broadcaster NHK said the ANA aircraft, heading for Tokyo, landed in Takamatsu and all passengers on board were evacuated after smoke was seen in the cabin. Naoko Yamamoto, ANA spokeswoman, said: “It made an emergency landing at Takamatsu because there was an error message during the flight. The aircraft has
18th January - 24th January 2013
recently seen a series of troubles, but we cannot say if this has something in common with previous problems.” Television footage showed emergency chutes deployed from the plane at the airport, on Shikoku, Japan’s fourth-largest island. There were 129 passengers and eight crew on board, and some passengers were reported to have suffered minor injuries as the plane was evacuated. The emergency followed a chapter of Dreamliner incidents lately. Last Friday, oil was discovered leaking from another ANAoperated Dreamliner at Miyazaki airport in southern Japan. On the same day, a cracked cockpit window was also discovered on another of its 787s. In addition, a domestic flight was halted by ANA last Wednesday because brake parts to the rear left-undercarriage needed replacing. A JAL jet was also grounded at Boston Logan International airport in the US following an engine fuel leak. And Another JAL 787 filled with smoke shortly after passengers and crew had disembarked last Monday. Japan is the biggest market so far for the Dreamliner, with ANA and Japan Airlines Co flying 24 of the 50
Dreamliners delivered to date. United Airlines, the only American carrier to have 787s, has six in its fleet. The Dreamliner was launched in October 2011 amid a flurry of publicity, and was touted as the most
eagerly-anticipated aircraft in commercial aviation history. It was also said to be a daring and controversial new plane, promises cutting edge features, comfort and industryleading fuel economy. The plane, which
can carry up to 290 passengers, had the resources to revolutionise the airline industry, said aviation experts, and was capable of earning legendary manufacturer Boeing billions of dollars in the process.

Stolen Matisse painting recovered after 25 years A
MATISSE painting w o r t h £600,000 has been returned to a Swedish museum this week, having disappeared for 25 years after being stolen. Chris Marinello, an art detective who has recovered stolen art work worth £160m in the past two decades, unearthed The Garden in Essex painting earlier this month. It will now be returned to the Museum Of Modern Art in Stockholm. In the last year alone, there has been a 10% rise in thefts of paintings and antiques, and art’s worldwide
black market is worth more than £4bn. There are 51,000 lost or missing art pieces in the UK, according to the Lost Arts Register (ALR), an evolving, computerised, international database which captures information about lost and stolen art, antiques and collectables. Mr Marinello told Sky News that waiting the
thieves out was the best strategy for recovering stolen art. “Eventually, they are going to try to sell them, but there is nothing you can do with stolen art. “It is essentially worthless, but these pieces do find their way on to the marketplace - and that’s when we pounce.” Major art galleries are stepping up their
Cubans free to travel now NEW travel laws will enable Cuban citizens to travel abroad without an exit permit, or a letter of invitation from someone in the country they wish to visit. It means they can leave the country and stay away for two years without losing their residency, instead of 11 months as before. But the new legislation, which carries a clause to safeguard national security and prevent any “brain drain”, does not permit travel abroad for government opponents, skilled workers and those privy to sensitive information. Geoff Thale, a Cuba analyst in Washington, said: “People see this as a symbolic step. It symbolises the end of the state intruding in the same way it used to in people’s regular lives.” Previously, Cubans had to have an exit visa to travel abroad, but its £187 price tag was beyond the reach
Page 16
of most people, earning the average monthly wage of £12. Now, they need only make a oneoff payment of around £62 for a two-year passport before they are free to leave. Ted Henken, a professor of Latin American studies at Baruch College, New York, says: “By making it easier for people to work or study abroad longer, while maintaining ties
to the island, the new laws will create more of a revolving door instead of an escape hatch.” But many Cubans, like Guillermo Farinas, remain sceptical about the new travel laws. Farinas, a past winner of the EU’s Sakharov human rights prize, has been denied an exit visa three times. “I think the migratory law is a way of creating the illusion of an opening in the eyes of the international community so that Cuba is not criticised so much,” she said. Another government critic described the new laws as “hypocritical” because they allow Cubans to go to the US, while other legislation bans most Americans from entering Cuba. But experts point out Cubans must still get entry visas to enter the US and Europe, which is a big ask for people from any developing country.
security in a bid to thwart the villains. Only last year, thieves raided a Rotterdam museum and made off with works from Picasso, Monet, Gauguin and Matisse, worth hundreds of millions of pounds potentially. Robert Read, from Hiscox Insurance, says
art galleries have to strike a fine balance, adding: “It is their primary business to be open to the public and make their works accessible. “At the same time, they have a duty to protect them, and they have to walk a knifeedge.”
The ALR database has become potentially useful for collectors, the art trade, insurers and worldwide lawenforcement agencies. It is a London-based, independent off-spring of New York’s nonprofit International Foundation for Art Research (IFAR)
Lottery cost goes up, but so does the prize money! THE cost of tickets for the UK’s main National Lottery draw is doubling to £2, but more winners will get a share of the prizes. Camelot, which operates the draw, said the increase, which takes effect in the autumn, means players who have three correct numbers will win £25 instead of the current £10. But the reward for matching five numbers will drop by £500 to £1,000, and the prize for getting five numbers and the bonus number will halve to £50,000. The winnings for matching four numbers will increase from £60 to £100. It’s the price rise
since the Lotto draw launched in 1994 and follows research which found that consumers “want more ways to win more money” from the game. Around 800,000 players win prizes for matching three or four numbers each week, while some 800 players match five numbers, or five plus the bonus. The average Saturday jackpot will increase from around £4.1m to £5m, and the Wednesday jackpot will increase from an estimated £2.2m to around £2.5m. In addition, a new Lotto raffle will guarantee at least 50 winners £20,000 in each draw, Camelot managing director Andy Duncan said: “Our players still love Lotto, but after 18 years they say they want
more from it. We’ve spoken extensively with them to develop a reenergised game. “The changes to rejuvenate Lotto will give them what they have asked for: £25 for matching three numbers, bigger jackpots and a brand-new way to play and win one of 50 prizes of a guaranteed £20,000 on every draw.” Lotto rollover draws will also change, with the number of raffle prizes on offer increasing significantly with each roll of the jackpot. Total National Lottery sales have increased by 35% since 2002, and the number of players has grown by more than 12% in the last five years. Players have also helped to raise more than £29bn for National Lottery “Good Causes”.

An elderly woman has paid thousands for a new driveway but was left with a pile of bricks. Can sheriffs Darryl and Mark get her money back for her? An internet whiz carried out work for a leafleting company but never received the 3,500 pounds of wages he was due. The sheriffs go in search of his money, and Lawrence and Kev get more than they bargained for at a north London car dealer.

W C C H O IC E Celebrity Come Dine with Me Channel 4, 16:10 Ireland. Five strangers compete over a week, taking turns to throw a dinner party in their own style. In this celebrity special from Dublin, the first host is modelling boss Celia HolmanLee. She'll be wining and dining reality TV star Geraldine O'Callaghan, actor and comedian Joe Rooney, former Miss World Rosanna Davison and showbiz photographer Brian McEvoy. Celia's tactic to win the 5000 euro prize for charity is to use her sense of style to paper over the fact that she's not a good cook. She decides to hold her Arabian-themed dinner party in the Moroccan suite of a swanky hotel. Unfortunately, this means she has to do her preparation and cooking in the hotel's busy working kitchen. The guests arrive in full costume but Joe is the odd one out. Rosanna and Brian seem to enjoy the meal, but Joe and Geraldine notice it doesn't live up to the ambiance of the evening. Does Celia have the class to win high scores, or will her guests see through her 'emperor's new clothes' approach to hosting?

Ripper Street BBC1, 21.00 The brutal clearing of a local slum for the underground railway reveals an almost indecipherable murder scene and an unreliable slum girl witness. Lucy Eames (Emma Rigby), beautiful and disturbed, is the unlikely key to a byzantine web of conspiracy that appears to entangle progressive London councillor Stanley Bone (Paul McGann), Long Susan and the benevolent Dr Karl Crabbe (Anton Lesser) of the Lark Rise asylum. As Reid closes in on the killer, it becomes clear that the condemned slum is home to dark secrets that someone is desperate to protect
David Attenborough takes a breathtaking journey through the vast and diverse continent of Africa. The very heart of Africa is covered in dense tropical rainforest. The animals that live here find the most ingenious ways to carve out their space in a claustrophobic landscape. Danger lurks in every shadow, but some animals thrive here, from honeystealing chimps to birds with a lineage as old as the dinosaurs, thundering elephants and kickboxing frogs. Here in the Congo, no matter how tough the competition, you must stand up and fight for yourself and your patch.
Downbeat drama about a cockney drifter who is tempted into crime to fund his infatuation with a gangster's moll. Family tragedy and impending war finally offer him the chance to redeem himself in this transatlantic view of poverty in London's East End on the eve of World War II.

W C C H O IC E Blandings BBC1, 18.30 An all-star cast heads up BBC One’s brand new period comedy series Blandings, based on PG Wodehouse’s celebrated stories and adapted by Guy Andrews (Lost in Austen). Connie is anxious to make a good impression on her visiting childhood friend Veronica, and Veronica’s rich American husband, Jimmy Schoonmaker. She enlists the services of the pathologically fastidious secretary Rupert Baxter to purge Blandings - and in particular Clarence - who is liberally anointing his roses with stinking manure. Meanwhile, Freddie has fallen madly in love with dog lover Pandora and attempts to impress her by becoming a dog food salesman, much to his Aunt Connie’s exasperation.

Call The Midwife BBC1, 20.00
Written by Heidi Thomas and based on the best-selling memoirs of the late Jennifer Worth, Call the Midwife returns for a second series in early 2013. Extended to eight episodes, BBC One’s most successful new drama since ratings began sees the return of all its well-loved characters as well as some new faces. Nonnatus House opens its doors to warmly welcome the audience back into 1950s East End London, and continues to follow Poplar’s community of exceptional midwives and nursing nuns. This new series stays true to its roots and viewers can expect to see more births, babies, and bicycling, plus blossoming romance from an unexpected quarter… It’s 1958 and, returning from a long day of duties, Nurse Jenny Lee finds the Nonnatus House community gathered to wish her a happy birthday, before she, Chummy, Trixie and Cynthia head off to the cinema - it’s a joyous celebration. However the midwife’s good cheer is short lived when the next day she is assigned a new patient, Molly Brignall. Involved in an abusive marriage, Molly’s due date is imminent and Jenny worries about the harm that could come to Molly and her children. Meanwhile, Trixie and Sister Evangelina find themselves in highly unusual circumstances, aboard a Swedish cargo ship looking after the captain’s daughter, who is about to have her first baby. Jenny is played by Jessica Raine, Chummy by Miranda Hart, Trixie by Helen George, Cynthia by Bryony Hannah, Molly by Scarlett Archer and Sister Evangelina by Pam Ferris

The Bake Off is back, and this time 16 celebrity Comic Relief supporters will be slugging it out in an effort to raise some serious dough for charity in The Great Comic Relief Bake Off. Mel Giedroyc presents this four-part Comic Relief special which sees four celebrity bakers, of varying baking experience, compete against each other in four mini Bake Offs. All the challenges are devised by legendary cookery writer Mary Berry and acclaimed Master Baker Paul Hollywood, who will also judge and taste their efforts. The baker who rises above the rest is crowned Comic Relief Star Baker at the end of each the episodes. Lorraine Pascal will also be in Ghana, showing one of the projects that Comic Relief supports and how the money raised really makes a difference. Show one features comedians Jo Brand, Stephen K Amos, Lorna Watson and Ingrid Oliver and a big dollop of laughter is added into the Bake Off mix. The contestants are pushed to their baking limits as they try to create their Signature Bakes (shortbread), Technical Bakes (custard slice), and Showstopper Bakes (chocolate cake). Jo creates a black forest cake featuring an iconic hero, Stephen makes an experimental flourless chocolate and stem ginger cake, Lorna goes for a white chocolate and raspberry cake with surprising results, and Ingrid attempts lady grey tea and lavender shortbread. But who will make an impression on Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood and whose showstopper will leave the judges gasping for water?

They are the stories of the real Lady Marys and Lord Granthams, the real Bates and Anna. Julian says: “The families who built and lived in these houses were governing the country. Their servants were making the whole thing work. Pretty well all of us have got ancestors who were either giving orders, or taking them, or probably both.” From the most significant moments in our history, the execution of Mary Queen of Scots and the Battle of Waterloo, to the uncovering of untold stories of scandalous marriage, a lusty painter, a cruelly slain cook, a groom murdered and a tragic story of a disgraced dairy maid. Julian’s discoveries and powerful storytelling bring history to a human level. He shows us that these houses are part of all our history: “These are not just houses for posh people to live in, their history belongs to all of us.”

Hosted by Dermot O’Leary, the night honours some of the biggest stars of the small screen in the only TV awards ceremony voted for by the public. He’s planning a show-stopping entrance which is sure to be one to remember and viewers are also minded to look out for Dermot’s most challenging routine to date, accompanied by a very special dancing guest. This year sees the Great British Bake Off make its National Television Awards shortlist debut in the Factual Entertainment category. It will need to fight off the likes of The Apprentice, Top Gear and Paul O’Grady: For The Love Of Dogs to be in with a chance of scooping the prize. Talent shows rivalry continues and hotting up the competition is first time shortlist nominee, The Voice UK, going up against triple NTA winner The X Factor and fellow contenders Strictly Come Dancing, Dancing On Ice and Britain’s Got Talent. After making a return to our screens this year, the classic Absolutely Fabulous finds itself facing Benidorm, Mrs Browns Boys and The Big Bang Theory in the Situation Comedy category. Can the old favourites beat the new and take home the silverware? This year’s awards see the addition of the Documentary Series category, featuring the hugely popular nominees including Big Fat Gypsy Weddings, One Born Every Minute and fascinating natural history shows, Frozen Planet and Planet Earth Live. The ever popular Serial Drama category is set to be one of the most highly contentious gongs of the evening as the battle of the soaps heats up yet again. Last year’s winner Coronation Street faces stiff competition from EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks to be in with a chance of taking home the coveted prize. The NTAs very own Dermot O’Leary will once again be trying his luck as he finds himself nominated for the Entertainment Presenter gong. Can Geordie duo Ant and Dec make it twelve years at the top or will fellow nominees Alan Carr and Keith Lemon take their crown? After a summer of sport, one of the highlights at this year’s ceremony is certain to be the presentation of the Landmark Award in recognition of all involved in the London 2012 Olympic Games. To accompany the presentation will be a video montage of the greatest Olympic moments, hand-picked by the Great British public. Now in its eighteenth year, the National Television Awards is firmly established as Britain’s premier award ceremony whose distinctive feature is that all the winners are chosen by the public in a huge nationwide poll.

House and the team take on the case of Morgan (guest star Judy Greer) who works in a nursing home with a pet cat who only sleeps next to people if they are about to die - and does so with alarmingly accuracy. When it seems the cat has predicted her own death, Morgan, convinced she is about to die, fakes a seizure in order to get to House to have him diagnose her before it's too late. House dismisses her as a nut job, but is intrigued with the claim about the cat and sets out to disprove Morgan's theory.

Why let your antiques collect dust in the attic when you can sell them? I was a cold-hearted son of a bitch.” Baer tells Trevor that he always remembers the names and the birthdays of his victims, because he feels as though he is a part of their lives. Trevor says: “You’re not a part of their lives because they have gone on. They have died. They have been killed.” Baer replies: “I’m a part of their family’s lives. I’ve killed a little kid in the worst possible way that can be imagined. You can’t even imagine how I feel.” Trevor says that meeting Baer has made him revise his thoughts on the death penalty. He adds: “I’ve never believed in the death penalty myself. I’ve always been against it, and I probably still am. But when I think about what you’ve done, I begin to understand why people feel it should be the appropriate sentence for crimes like yours. Do you understand that?” And Baer admits: “I do deserve to be executed. There’s no way around it. If a person does what I’ve done, they should be executed.” Also in this episode, Trevor goes inside the death chamber. Superintendent Wilson shows Trevor the route that the prisoners take as they leave death row and make their way to the building where they will meet their end. He sees the sparse holding room where the condemned man will spend his last few hours. Superintendent Wilson explains that some pass the time watching television, while others just sit quietly, meditating. Trevor sees the gurney where the prisoners are strapped down and injected with a lethal cocktail of chemicals. He sees the room where people can watch through a window as the death sentence is carried out. Superintendent Wilson explains that most of the prisoners accept their fate and get on the gurney, but one inmate was completely passive and had to be carried from his cell. Superintendent Wilson says: “We do everything we can to make sure the offender’s comfortable. We talk to him to make sure he understands the process… we try to be there for him. Once he’s placed on the gurney he’s allowed a final statement. An actual death warrant is read to him, so that he understands why he’s in this position, and, at that point, then we start the execution process.”

Entertainment
JAMIE DREW
Email: jamie.drew@canarianweekly.com
The future’s looking bright M ANY people visit t h e s e lovely shores for lots of reasons. Apart from the wonderful weather, the entertainment scene is renowned for being the best of all the Canary Islands. With a saturation of venues offering enterOn my travels this week I bumped into a number of people; some I expected to and others? Well, it was a shock to hear that Lizzie Brown, a female vocalist from Barnsley is leaving for the UK.
tainment in many forms, from the phenomenon of Karaoke to tribute artistes, comedians, dance troupes, solo musicians and speciality acts, there is a wide choice. But when it comes to what’s happening on stage, does entertainment start and finish there? Of course not. The dictionary definition of “entertainment quite simply means to entertain – to hold a person or persons’ attention
for a set period of time, Whether that be in the form of a quiz, a song, a show or even the bar staff, just chatting to customers about where they are from, and the usual small talk that follows it’s all entertainment - even down to what is showing on the TV screens. And however it is delivered, it starts from the moment people enter a venue. These days, audiences are wiser and are able to
tell the difference when something is not quite up to scratch. Also, they are not so forgiving when an “artiste sings out of tune because their expectations are higher. This, I believe, is because of shows like BGT, The Voice and the X Factor, where live acts are given criticism on their performance. This serves not only to wind viewers up, but it also educates them on the standard expected
at the business end of the music industry. Having said that, the dynamics which have changed the way an audience views an artist have also affected the acts on stage. They are being forced to re-invent and get creative, put new shows together and try things out of their comfort zone. Some succeed while others try and fail - and, in some cases, badly. It’s great news for the
professionals on the circuit but bad news for those just trying to become an entertainer those who talk the talk (Facebook) but can’t walk the walk. This year, I believe, the bar has been raised and those who can, will ‌ and those who can’t? Well, they’ll be serving pints again this summer. This is why I believe the future is bright, and why 2013 is going to be a very entertaining year in Tenerife.
Out & about Lizzie has spent the last two years in Tenerife working on the circuit and wowing audiences with her flawless voice. She
has decided to return to the UK to try her hand at the UK circuit, and I’m sure she’ll succeed. Good luck Lizzie Brown!
All Arms and apples SO it’s early evening in Tenerife and I’m off out and about - and the first person I bump into in the Starco area is Adam, assistant manager at The Wigan Arms. And even before our customary Tenerife handshake is over, he has invited me in to sample a pint of apple juice. Before I can even say, “Don’t mind if I do, I’m at the bar, holding a nice cold apple juice. The rest is history. I ended up staying until around midnight and had a great time. There are some bars you can just walk past on the way to somewhere else and give a wave to the staff inside. Then there are others you feel compelled to go into and see everyone. The Wigan Arms, at Starco in Las Americas, is one such venue. I love it there for a number of reasons, but mainly because it looks like a traditional British pub - lots of polished wood and nice, solid furniture. The food is great, too,
served all day from an extensive menu. The staff get completely involved with whatever is happening on stage, and this makes the audience feel more comfortable about joining in. Also, the staff are all long-term and have been there for more than just one summer. Resident Cabaret Artiste Crystal Starr is one of the longest-standing residents working on the Island, with a huge following and 20 years of service at The Wigan Arms. She still packs them in and, because the dynamics are right in the bar and everyone works as a team, it provides the best formula for entertainment. That begins from 9pm every night until the
18th January - 24th January 2013
early hours. It all starts with compere Dean Matlock, who warms up until 10pm, and then introduces Chrystal to the stage. Until I arrived in Tenerife, I had never seen “Drag done in such a matter-of-fact way. The best thing about watching someone on stage like Crystal is the unpredictability of what’s going to happen. All entertainers have polished sections of an act which they do all the time. But the ability to ad-lib and be spontaneous is an invaluable skill to an entertainer, and one Chrystal knows how to exploit - natural and very funny, Crystal Starr is a mustsee act. She (he) has a ton of experience and works six nights at The Wigan Arms while resting on Fridays. With some fine cabaret shows throughout the week from 11pm, this is definitely a venue you can visit, no matter what age you are, and be thoroughly entertained from every angle.
In the Irish Rover, I found these three reprobates comparing size. There’s Craig, Compère @ Pheasant Plucker, with a big one, Tony, who owns the Pheasant, with a big one, and Titch in the middle, with a titchy one. That ended up being a late night and size didn’t matter at the death because it was all about who had enough credit to call a cab. I HAVE to tip my hat to Billy Porter, who has a heart of gold. You may have heard the story about John Loggie, a young Scotsman who came on holiday with his pals. Within hours of arriving, he had a bad accident which left him with spinal injuries. Basically he broke his back. He has been stranded here in Candelaria hospital with no family or friends and some huge medical bills. When Billy heard me relating this story during The Linekers Lunchtime Show on Oasis Fm, he visited John in hospital and has continued to do so regularly. Billy has also been raising awareness of this young man’s plight at the venues where he works and raising money, simply by telling the story and asking people for a small donation. The support has been outstanding and Billy has helped to raise over 2,000 euros, half of that coming from his regular gigs. So hats off to Billy Porter and the support of the people in his audiences.

S with anything this year there will be home improvement trends what’s in fashion and what’s not. Across Europe the Germans are the most capable, the Turkish are the least confident and the French are the champions at spending…on DIY. What about the UK and Ireland? We are the keenest gardeners. Our Continental neighbours are discovering the joys of “do it yourself” and, at home or in the garden, are going at it hammer and nail, thus feeding changes across the Eurozone in home improvement, according to a recent European Home Report by Kingfisher, owner of B&Q, the UK’s largest home improvement retailer. Modern Europeans are, at last, following in the footsteps of the UK, where tinkering with home and garden has become a leisure activity. But as with every market, each country has its strengths and styles when it comes to home improvement. 81% of people in the UK and Ireland say they would be happy to take on gardening jobs, while the Polish are confident DIY plumbers (21%). Apart from painting and decorating (53%) and small ad-hoc repairs (49%), the Spanish are very confident at electrical tasks (23%). Not being content with building the best cars and producing some of the best football players in the world, Germany tops the home improvement confidence table with assured skill levels in every category, including complex

jobs such as electrical projects (29%) and structural work (21%). ‘Improve don’t move’ seems to be the mantra across Europe though, with 60% of the UK respondents expressing an interest in making improvements simply to refresh the home and 37% of Russian consumers favouring more opulent “Heritage” styles of décor over the contemporary looks. Europe is also embracing energy efficiency and ecofriendly homes, with more than half (54%) of consumers in Turkey placing the
highest interest in living in an eco-friendly home. While Poland 37%, Russia 36% and Germany 28%, find ecofriendliness in the home very important too. Ebru Sayilan Commercial Director at B&Q says: “Today’s economy has contributed its part to the expansion of the doit-yourself movement, as more people turn to it as a way to save money. However, this research shows that we like our houses to work harder and smarter, and that’s why we spend time and money maintaining and improving their value.”
To help us ‘keep up with the joneses’, here’s a sneak peak at some more differences across Europe, which are shaping the way we live in our homes and the year ahead in home improvement UK & Ireland - People in the UK and Ireland have made changes to cater for more home based entertaining (31%) and leisure activities (34%). - 26% of those surveyed say they have started growing vegetables. - More home improvers in the UK and Ireland plan to tackle internal (56%) and external (15%) painting and decorating than in any other country. In fact, we are the kings and queens of painting and decorating without any expert help (82%). - DIYers in the UK and Ireland are the most likely to do their own tiling (38%), and insulation (22%) projects. - The UK and Ireland use ‘click and collect’ more than any other country with 29% saying they use the internet to
reserve items online to pick up in store. France - The French are the home improvement champions of Europe, spending 1.2 times the European average in the past 12 months - The ‘grow your own’ trend is also evident in France with 21% growing their own vegetables and 30% of respondents saying water butts would be their preferred ecoinvestment. - People in France are less likely than other consumers to use the internet for inspiration, 57% prefer browsing in DIY stores. Poland - Leisure time at home is the focus of home improvements in Poland (54%) - Polish people tend to be proudest of their less public rooms – the kitchen (21%), bathroom (18%) and spare bedroom (13%). - Polish gain inspiration for their homes from design and style magazines (43%) and are the most likely to be inspired by places they have visited (27%). - In Poland, people are also very keen to make changes so they can work from home (27%). Russia - Home improvement is set to remain one of the top leisure activities in Russia next year as people plan to do more (88%) and spend more (47%). - Russians are twice as likely to want to impress their visitors (14%) with inspiration particularly taken from television shows (60%) and the internet (53%) Energy saving measures, such as new heating controls (25%) and cavity wall insulation (21%), are more popular in Russia than elsewhere. Europe’s largest community gardening campaign begins S TREETS across the UK will be lined with herbs and vegetables for local people to harvest for years to come, as a result of the launch activity for the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Britain in Bloom 2013 programme. ‘Edible Britain’ will result in community gardening groups creating 2,000 herb and vegetable patches in public spaces around Britain from 8 to 14 April. RHS community gardening groups, of which there are more than 3,000, can apply for free Mr Fothergills edible-plant seed packets, provided by the RHS. Some 30,000 packets of seed, including chives, dill, parsley, carrots, coriander, spring onions and red frills mustard, as well as edible flowers such as nasturtiums and marigolds, will be distributed to 2,000 gardening groups. Stephanie Eynon, RHS Community Horticulture Manager, said: “Britain in Bloom isn’t just about pretty hanging baskets brightening up gloomy streets, it’s about improving the environment, enhancing lives and bringing communities together through gardening. Thanks to ‘Edible Britain’, new public herb and vegetable gardens will be planted across the UK, bringing access to tasty produce to thousands. More than 200,000 people devote almost 4.4 million hours each
year to enhancing their community, saving the country millions of pounds through RHS Britain in Bloom. On average, groups plant 115,000 trees, 352,000 shrubs and 21.6 million THE Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has announced its ‘Top Ten’ pests for 2012 based on enquiries received by the charity’s Entomology department. As in 2011 slugs and snails topped the list but this time they generated also most twice as many enquiries as cushion scale, the number two pest. The previous year both pests had almost a similar number of enquiries. “The dominant feature of 2012 was the weather and this had a big impact on garden pest problems, says Andrew Halstead, RHS Principal Scientist Plant Health. “As we all know this was the second wettest year in the last hundred years. Pests that like damp conditions therefore did well. Last summer the demand for slug controls, especially nematodes used

plants and bulbs throughout Britain each year. The social impacts of participating in Britain in Bloom are as significant as the environmental and
visual benefits. An RHS survey* found that 90% of groups claim that the biggest benefit of participating in the campaign is community development, and more than 50% of groups have
seen a clear decline in crime and antisocial behavior. Britain in Bloom promotes a healthy lifestyle across all generations. ‘Edible Britain’ will engage children in growing fresh produce, which is a well-established way to increase interest in healthy eating because it encourages a more knowledgeable relationship with their food. Community growing also allows older people, who form approximately a third of all Britain in Bloom volunteers, to stay active, feel less isolated and gain a greater sense of purpose. Britain in Bloom was set up in 1964 as a tourist initiative but since the RHS took over in 2002 has grown into one of Europe’s largest community gardening
TOP PESTS as a biological control, sometimes exceeded supplies. Mosquitoes and biting midges were other beneficiaries because of the plentiful supply of temporary pools and wet soil. These provided ideal breeding sites where the larvae could develop. However, the belowaverage temperatures and wet weather may have also had some positive effects. These conditions can reduce the mating success and rate of development of pests, as well as restricting their mobility. Some pests, such as horse chestnut leaf-mining moth, euonymus scale and viburnum beetle, were noticeably less troublesome last summer. Other pests, particu-
larly aphids and scale insects, are susceptible to fungal infections that can spread rapidly in wet conditions, and this may have resulted in reduced populations. “It will be interesting to see what effect the wet winter has on pest populations in 2013, says Andrew. “Insects that overwinter underground or spend part of their life cycle there can drown when the soil becomes waterlogged. This affects
not just pests but also some beneficial insects, such as ground-nesting solitary bees. “Slugs and snails are often so abundant in gardens that some damage has to be tolerated. Gardeners need to accept that they cannot be totally eradicated, says Andrew. “Seedlings and other vulnerable plants can be protected with slug pellets containing metaldehyde or ferric phosphate but there are also some useful non-chemical controls. For example a biological control specific to slugs is available in the form of a microscopic nematode or eelworm (Nemaslug). Gardeners, if they have a particularly bad slug problem, should consider transplanting
and environmental campaigns involving villages, towns, cities, urban communities and neighbourhood groups across the country. It is also the UK’s biggest voluntary campaign. Anybody can set up or join their nearest group by typing in their postcode into an online map found www.rhs.org. uk/getinvolved Hot on the heels of ‘Edible Britain’ is the UK’s second National Gardening Week (15-21 April). To celebrate the week and continue its charitable work to get people gardening and growing a diversity of plants, the RHS will give away 10,000 packets of wildflower seeds for people to create mini wildflower meadows across Britain www. nationalgardeningweek. org.uk
sturdy plantlets grown on in pots, rather than young vulnerable seedlings. They can also place slug traps, such as scooped out skins of half oranges or grapefruits laid cut side down or jam jars partfilled with beer and sunk into the soil, near vulnerable plants. Barriers can be used to keep slugs and snails away from plants. These include copper tapes around pots or standing them on matting impregnated with copper salts. Moistureabsorbent minerals placed around plants may be useful and, of course, predators that eat slugs and snails, such as some birds, frogs, toads, hedgehogs, slow-worms and ground beetles should be encouraged in gardens. Further information on controlling garden pests is available on the charity’s website www.rhs.org.uk

Forward thinking is a must for hair
W
H I L E speaking to someone I don’t really know recently, it occurred to me that some of you out there don’t know the damage you are doing to your hair. This particular person had long hair, coloured black and all one length - with no shape at all. And it was long simply for the sake of being long! She was trying to get as much info from me without actually coming to the salon. Her hair looked okay, but after I had felt it (it was like shredded wheat), she then went on to tell me that her stylist put the colour over it every two weeks to hide her white hair. Worse was still to come when she said she used supermarket products
Page 40
and never used a protection spray when she ironed her hair daily. Her last haircut? Over six months ago! She then asked for suggestions for her problems. “Scissors”, was my reply, but she was having none of it - not even to cut away half the damage, I left quickly, making excuses, so as not to waste more of my time. The moral of my story is this: BEFORE your hair gets to this stage, when the only solution is a really drastic cut, think about what you are doing to it as you colour it, style it, and what you wash it in. We, as stylists, can only give you our free advice. We can guide you in the right direction, but if it’s falling on deaf ears, then what can we do? A walk-in client just before Christmas asked us if we could just take off the ends of her hair, which had not been cut for over three years.
You can guess our response. It was in need of 12 inches taking off as it was so broken and split. But would she listen to reason? No! She left without the haircut, telling us it needed the ends off only. But we are certainly not into taking off hair if it’s not needed. We want to save what you have, and do something about it way before the falling-off stage. Your hair is a living thing and you cannot torture it until only a hair masque will sort it out. Use decent products recommended by your stylist, and always use heat defence if using styling equipment. Never pass colours through your hair unless it’s really needed - and please don’t rub your hair with a towel! The best way to think about what you are doing to your hair is to think: “Would I do this to my face?” Probably not!
A weight-loss scare for would-be mums WOMEN who have had weightloss surgery have been warned to wait at least a year before trying for a baby. Doctors say that giving birth after surgery is safer and associated with fewer complications than becoming pregnant when morbidly obese. But patients should still be treated as highrisk, and are “strongly advised” not to get pregnant for 12 to 18 months afterwards because there is also a risk of miscarriage. Of particular concern is that obesity among women of child-bearing age is expected to rise to 28% within two years. National guidelines recommend weightloss surgery - usually featuring a gastric band or gastric bypass - as an option for anyone with a body-mass index of more than 40kg/sq m. A new review of the latest evidence, published in The Obstetrician and Gynaecologist journal, says that it will become more and more common for doctors to be asked for advice about the safety of becoming pregnant after bariatric (weight-loss) surgery. Yet there is a lack of guidance on how to manage such patients, and researchers found that most women who get pregnant after bariatric surgery would have no complications. One study even suggests that 79% would have a straightforward
pregnancy. But there can be surgical complications, with the potential for a gastric band to slip or move during pregnancy, leading to severe vomiting. Another survey found that band leakage was reported in 24% of pregnancies. The advice is that those who become pregnant after weight-loss surgery should be managed by a team of experts, which includes an obstetrician, surgeon, fertility specialist and nutritionist. The researchers suggested that female patients, before getting pregnant, should receive advice and information on contraception, nutrition and weight gain, and vitamin supplements.
And yet another study found that 31% of pregnancies occurring within 18 months of having weight-loss surgery ended in spontaneous miscarriage, compared with 18% in women who got pregnant after 18 months. Rahat Khan, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust in Harlow, Essex, and co-author of the review, said: “In light of current evidence available, pregnancy after bariatric surgery is safer, with fewer complications, than pregnancy in morbidlyobese women." But she added that this group of women should still be considered to be in the high-risk category.

Fast-food danger for kids
C
HILDREN who eat fast food three times a week may be prone to asthma and eczema.
Data from more than 500,000 children in more than 50 countries suggests poor diet may be to blame for rising levels of these allergyrelated conditions. Researchers studying global disease and dietary patterns discovered that those who ate fast food, such as takeaway burgers, risked severe asthma, eczema and itchy, watery eyes. But eating plenty of fruit appeared to be protective Fast food often contains high levels of saturated and transfatty acids, which are known to affect immunity, while fruit is rich in antioxidants and other beneficial compounds. In the study, for the Thorax journal (an
international paper for health professionals concerning respiratory medicine), children in their early teens who ate three or more weekly servings of fast food had a 39% increased risk of severe
asthma. The increased risk is reduced to 27% for those aged six and seven. Eating three or more portions of fruit a week cut the risk of severe asthma, eczema and rhinoconjunctivitis by
between 11% and 14%. The study authors, Prof Innes Asher, from the University of Auckland in New Zealand, and Prof Hywel Williams, from the University of Nottingham in the UK,
said: “If the associations between fast foods and the symptom prevalence of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema is causal, then the findings have major public health significance because of
the rising consumption of fast foods globally.” People with asthma do not generally have to follow a special diet. But certain foods, in some cases, such as cow’s milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, yeast products, nuts, and some food colourings and preservatives, can make symptoms worse. Malayka Rahman of Asthma UK, said research suggested that diet may contribute to the risk of developing asthma, and that eating healthily may have a beneficial effect. “Evidence suggests that the vitamins and antioxidants found in fresh fruit and vegetables have a beneficial effect on asthma,” she said. “Therefore Asthma UK advises people with asthma to eat a healthy, balanced diet, including five portions of fruit or vegetables every day, fish more than twice a week, and pulses more than once a week.”
Mums who breast-feed are safest B R E A S T FEEDING babies can reduce the risk of ovarian cancer in mothers by nearly twothirds. And the longer they continue to do it, the greater the protection against the illness. New research adds to evidence of the benefits of natural feeding because, as numerous studies have already shown, it cuts the chances of breast cancer. More than 6,000 patients a year in the UK are diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and the illness accounts for about 5% of cancer deaths in women. It is known as the “silent killer” because
symptoms for many sufferers, such as feeling bloated, are non-specific. And the illness may not be diagnosed until it is fairly advanced. For the latest study, Australian scientists studied 493 women diagnosed with ovarian cancer, comparing them with 472 healthy volunteers of similar age.
18th January - 24th January 2013
Each was asked how many children she had and for how long she breastfed each one. The results showed that those who breastfed a child for at least 13 months were 63% less likely to develop a tumour than those who did so for less than seven months. The more children they had, the greater the effect, said the
findings, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Mothers who had three children and breastfed for a total of 31 months or more were found to cut their chances of ovarian tumours by 91%. This was compared with those feeding naturally for under 10 months. The UK has one of the lowest breast-feeding rates in Europe. Nearly eight in 10 mothers start when their baby is born, but this is down to half after six weeks. Breastfeeding is thought to help as it delays ovulation, when eggs are released and the ovaries are exposed to high levels of oestrogenrich fluid. Some researchers believe a higher number of ovulations raises the risk of mutant cells
forming, which can trigger the disease. The main risk-factors for ovarian cancer include a family history of the disease, having already had breast cancer, starting periods
at a young age and being overweight. Gilda Witte, chief executive of Ovarian Cancer Action, said: "It is proven that breastfeeding can reduce the risk of ovarian cancer.”

Alhambra Palace is the place to be
E
UROPE’S top tourist spot last year was Granada’s Alhambra Palace, which attracted a mammoth 2.26 million visitors. The spectacular, historical, Arab complex, dating back to Spain’s
Mediaeval era, enjoyed an increase of 800,000 on the 2011 total. Overall, the number of Europeans visiting the Alhambra went up by 8.08%, accounting for nearly half the total. And tourists don’t just make a beeline for Palace, because the Generalife gardens are just as popular, while more than1.05 million people visited the
Alhambra museum, the Fine Arts Museum and temporary exhibitions within the complex. In addition, another 73,100 travellers saw concerts at the Alhambra and enjoyed the Granada International Music and Dance Festival, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Palace being awarded World Heritage status. Many of the 2.26 million
visitors to the Alhambra complex, helped boost the local economy, nearly 79% staying at least one night in Granada’s hotels. The most popular day for visitors to the Palace and its surroundings was 12th October - a Spanish bank holiday - when staff sold all 9,258 available tickets. And even on the least popular day, 16th
January, they still got rid of 1,784 tickets. April drew the highest number of tourists - just under 250,000 and January proved the least welcoming, with fewer than 11,000. Guided tours accounted for about a quarter of the entire total, having increased by 50% last year. The complex management says the
typical visitor to the Alhambra is aged 3044, with degree-level education, and comes away impressed with the complex and its excellent conservation. The management also points out that the profile of the average person who buys tickets to the Palace on its website is mainly female a graduate aged between 35-54.
Monday blues - on a Sunday night! THE Monday Blues clearly arrive early for many, because 9pm on a Sunday is the busiest time of the week for flight searches. Leading flight search site Skyscanner says that’s when people want to get away from it all, and there’s a regular surge on its app at that time every weekend. The “everywhere” option is the most popular search at this time, indicating that users are looking for ideas for their next holiday. However, the peak time for flight bookings is lunchtime, between 12pm and 2pm on a
Page 44
Monday, on a desktop computer. It suggests that workers are busy booking an escape route at their desk over a lunchtime sandwich. The majority of travellers use mobile devices to research their travel plans, and share ideas with friends, before completing their bookings on a desktop computer. Skyscanner claims that 36% of overall sessions in the UK come via mobile, with that figure growing rapidly. Australia and Singapore, who lead the way in mobile use, are the only two countries in which the inhabitants
are more likely to plan their travel on a mobile device than at their desktop. Cluedup travellers from technology hubs such as Taiwan, Japan and South Korea are most comfortable booking flights on their phones. But Europeans prefer to use the desktop to book flights, using their mobiles for travel inspiration and sharing ideas with friends. Smartphones and tablets were one of the most popular Christmas gifts this year, and Skyscanner’s data shows that there is also a significant difference among mobile users
in how and when they book their travel. Android users usually like to use their phone for inspirational travel ideas, with the “everywhere” search feature proving most popular of all. But Windows Phone users appear to be the most decisive travellers, knowing exactly where they are heading and completing their travel plans by mobile. Skyscanner’s Victoria Bailie said: “It is interesting to see that, globally, there is a clear trend for people to search for flight inspiration on a Sunday evening. “Perhaps they’re doing
so while settling down to an evening’s TV, or planning ahead for the working week and looking for the next chance to get away to the sun. “At the same time, though, there is a clear trend to book flights during the workday lunch-break. “We also found some interesting differences in the way travellers from particular countries, and even owners of different mobile devices, plan and book their travel.” She added: “The countries more used to paying for big-ticket items on their phones are most likely to book online. And with
super -fast 4G set to become more widely available in UK next year, this should further increase the rate at which people plan and book their travel on the go.” Skyscanner’s highlyrated flight search app has received over 12 million downloads worldwide, and it is downloaded every five seconds as travellers increasingly look for inspiration and plan their trip on the move. The free app is available on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry and devices running Windows 8.

Ssshh… that’s the sound of Formula E revving up I
MAGINE, if you will, a deathly-silent Formula 1 race. I know, it’s an impossible thought because all you petrol-heads out there would miss the racket. Whisper it not, however, but a brand-new Formula E global series will take place in various cities from next year to provide a competition between electric racing cars. The innovative ‘hush’ championship will be launched in the streets of downtown Rome in 2014 - the first European event of the inaugural season featuring cars powered by electricity alone. Also nailed on is Rio de Janeiro, while other cities such as Madrid and Barcelona are considering hosting a leg of the Formula E Championship. In all, 40 cars and 20 drivers are envisaged for the opening season. Pirelli test driver Lucas di Grassi was commissioned to put one of the electric cars through its paces in the streets of Rome, around the Colloseum and the Circus Maximus – and did so with great aplomb. Meanwhile, progress continues apace in the development of the machines - the first-ever to be powered solely by electricity. So far, they are producing around 300hp with a top speed of 260km/h, and a range of 25 minutes. That’s the obvious drawback for a racing car, which is why there are two drivers per team and no fewer than 40 cars as well, which will achieve a one-hour race. The championship will
be governed by Formula E Holdings (FEH), led by Spanish businessman Alejandro Agag. And, under the umbrella of FIA’s technical regulations, the event is viewed as a championship to encourage designers and vehicle manufacturers “to create and develop Formula E” machines. Formula E Holdings acquired the prototype electric vehicle built by the founders of Formulec, Eric and Pierre Gosselini Barbaroux. Since 2008, they have been developing the prototype electric racing car, and have also joined Agag’s team to form FEH. The FEH have already requested of 42 vehicles made by Spark Racing Technology (SRT), a new company led by Frédéric Vasseur, and part of the consortium responsible for the design and assembly of electric cars. team McLaren, through their subsidiary company McLaren Electronic Systems Limited, will be responsible for providing the engine, transmission and electronics of the Spark Racing Technology cars.

Renault Captur’s the mood! THE Captur SUV model makes its public debut at this year’s Geneva show in March. Renault’s Captur, built on the same platform underpinning the latest Renault Clio and the Nissan Juke, was designed under the supervision of Renault styling boss Laurens Van den Acker. The striking-looking Captur is described by the firm’s small-car product boss, Benoit Bochard, as a “compact,
unaggressive crossover, which is particularly user-friendly”. The French company’s new machine, featuring a two-tone exterior as standard, follows the design themes established by the new Clio, with swept-back headlights, a huge Renault badge on the car’s nose and sculpted sides. At the rear, its stubby tail and upswept C-pillar helps make the Captur look more dynamic than a Juke - and, arguably, more attractive - while the
flared wheel-arches add to its sporty stance even more so. Renault claim the Captur is designed to feel like an MPV inside, featuring lots of space, a high driving position and a big boot. And all models will come well-equipped, with keyless entry, hill-start assist and parking sensors fitted as standard. Buyers will also be able to opt for the Renault R-Link system, which adds a touchscreen media tablet to control infotainment functions,
Bluetooth and a sixspeaker stereo. The petrol and diesel engine range will be carried over from the Clio, with the headline figure being a diesel model, returning CO2 emissions figures of just 96g/km - 2g/km more than the cleanest Clio but far less than the Juke 1.5 dCi, which emits 129g/km. The Renault Captur will be built at Renault’s Valladolid plant in Spain, and goes on sale in the UK in June, priced from around £13,000.

Tenerife’s derby delight CD Tenerife 1 CD Marino 0
T
HE scoreline is more misleading than a political party manifesto. Those who watched the match on teletext will believe this was a close game with a tight finish. But with all due respect to CD Marino, this was the easiest game of the season for Tenerife. Marino worked hard, defending like beavers, as Chris Kamara would say, and were deflated at the end. They did the shirt proud, but it was never enough. Some teams park the bus. Marino parked the whole Titsa garage. Tenerife wasted chance after chance after chance. Marino never got the ball out of their own half, and Sergio Aragoneses emailed his performance in. In fact, the only thing he had to do with toss
last week happened again, as did my point about Guillem Marti. It’s lovely to be right. The back-up striker came off the bench early in the second half and, inside a few minutes,
the captain’s coin. Aridane was the chief culprit in the first half as goals went begging. He was not alone in being wasteful, but again he was lazy! Everything I wrote about him here

worked and chased more than Aridane did all day. He needed just a few seconds to break the deadlock sweetly with a fine finish and put the game to bed. After that, Marino were happy to keep the score down, while Tenerife continued the trainingground exercise. For the hosts, it was their first double of the season, another three points and a pointer to the future. For Marino, it was a sharp reminder of life in the higher league. Oh, and hat-tip to their keeper Alberto. He was top drawer. Canarian Weekly ratings: CD Tenerife: Aragoneses 6, Javi Moyano 7, Tarantino 7, Bruno 6, Jesus Alvaro 7, Ros 6, Medina 6 (Marti 58min 7), Chechu 7, Suso 7, Cristo 7 (Luismi 77min 5), Aridane 5 (Yeray 77min 6). CD Marino: Alberto 9, Aaron 5, Noda 6, Acai 4, Rayco 7, David Dorta 6, Raul Barcos 5, Maykel 7, Noah 5, Balduino 5, Javi Marchena 6. After-
wards, Marino’s director must have had a few sherries because the club decided to release their captain, Maykel. It can only be in an effort to cut costs as he is one of the few who can play at this level. Despite making a raft of signings, five months too late, it smacks of acceptance: Marino are going down - and the board are letting it happen. Tenerife will also be saying goodbye to this league in June. Well, hopefully. As reported here last week, they have completed the exciting signing of Fran Ochoa. The creative left-footed midfielder joins from Guijuelo, with Abel and Germain going the other way on loan. Ochoa makes his debut on Sunday against Rayo Vallecano B, a side he played against last weekend! He enjoyed a 3-2 win then, so let’s hope lightning strikes twice! He was unveiled to the press this week and said: “I’m very pleased
to be here. Tenerife is a big club and I hope to help in the promotion. Tenerife play good football and I hope to help that.” Director of football Quique Medina has been busy during the transfer window, despite promising not to be. The former Cadiz defender centre-back Paco Borrego who is a hard lump could join. Medina said: “It’s great to have Ochoa here in Santa Cruz, and there could be a couple more joining as well. We will always look to make the best squad we can with the money available. We will look to move some out so we can maybe bring in new faces.” Medina was talking about Victor Bravo. The unwanted midfielder has offers to leave and should be on his way. This would leave the money to sign Borrego and also Leandro Zapato. The Argentine youngster is earning rave reviews at lower league UD Ibarra, who are based in El Fraile. Like the capture of British lad Jordan McCourt from CD Marino, he would be joining the B team with an eye to moving him upwards. But Zapato is considered quite a talent and who knows! Meanwhile, it seems as though it’s not just this column which has been voicing concerns over top scorer Aridane. Local media have expressed similar views and Medina was strong on his views this week, saying: “Aridane is our first-choice striker. I know he can exasperate some people, but he has got 11 goals, which is an excellent return. “It’s important that he feels comfortable in what he does, so I ask the fans to patient.” Okay Quique, I’m sure Guillem Marti feels the same way!

Terrace Bar B get the blues DIVISION ONE leaders Gaffers A completed the first whitewash of the season in Amarilla Golf on Tuesday. Terrace Bar B were the luckless prey as Gaffers went through the gears ruthlessly. It was a message of intent, which didn’t go unnoticed in Torviscas as second-place Tenerife Hammers A were also doing a demolition job on Bar La Caña. They came through 10-2 to keep up the chase. Palms A welcomed new boy Pete into the fray, and he won twice as they sneaked past Tenerife Hammers C 7-5 despite being 4-2 down at one stage. It was honours even in the Phoenix Bar as Knights and Potters settled on a draw. All the lads enjoyed the contest - and the fillet steaks! Toscales A continue to rack up the points. They were too strong for an out-of-sorts Inn The Pink A and were good value for the 8-4 win. Terrace Bar A were
back in the win column, finishing strongly to account for Dreamers in a match which saw Gavin, crucially, lose all three frames. Bluebell B, making their league bow, were delighted to start their Second Division campaign with a draw at Gaffers B. Fellow newbies Hoppys Bar won again, blowing away Treehouse B, and they are starting to climb the table. There were no problems for the top sides this week. Leaders Next Door were too good for Bluebell A, while Exiles A will be delighted with their win at improving Palms B. Treehouse A huffed and puffed before securing a 7-5 win against Bar 13 to stay second. Exiles B and Ryans Bar also tasted the sweet fruit of victory on Tuesday. night. It’s the first round of the Tenerife Pool Tables knockout cup this week, and there could be a few giant-killings. Terrace Bar A will

not be looking forward to their trip to Bar 13, while Terrace B will start as outsiders at Second Division highfliers Exiles A. Palms B will be confident of toppling Dreamers, who usually struggle in Torviscas, and Toscales A will need to be bang on form as they travel to Picassos. And good luck to Bluebell A, who host Gaffers A. Will they be the first team to beat them this season? Finally the provisional squad has been named for the international match with Scotland next month. It is, in re-

Kay slays the Wolf Man By Geoff Huxtable THE cynical among us might say that the only way the footballing Wolves get any news coverage is in this column. That is mostly down to Gaffers B captain Neil. But being well known as a top pool player and a Wolves supporter comes at a cost. His team did beat Palms sports Bar 6-2 and Neil did hit a 180. But he then lost his singles to a delighted Kay!
One eye on the television maybe? But away from the bright lights of Torvicas Alto, the place to be was Los Abrigos for some tense darts rivalry. That’s because a quirk in the fixture list pitched all six local teams in derby matches. Phoenix Flames entertained La Central B, and a close match saw them take the trebles to earn a draw, while The Rebels came from
18th January - 24th January 2013
4-1 down to sneak a point at La Cana. Well done to emerging young Rebels starlet Carl, who checked out on 99 during the match. The only Abrigos side to taste victory was Phoenix bar, and even that was down to a lastgasp trebles leg win at La Central. A solid per-
formance and a maximum from Bubbles maybe just gave the visitors the edge. The other Premier League match saw Target Army’s Brian hit two 180s, but The Pub proved no pushover and held on to take the last game for a share of the points. In Division 1, it was a special night for Summerland Hopefuls’ lass Kaz. Although her team lost to the Playboys, she will be more than happy with her first maximum. Well done girl!
Palms Sports Bar A were pushed all the way to the final game, which they duly won to beat Gaffers A, while Ourplace Naturals made short work of bottom team Marilyns and thumped them 7-1. A 96 finish by Alan, of Bar 180 B, was the only highlight for the San Blas outfit as they lost at Sundowners 1. Despite some great early-season form, Target Titans are now well off the pace. They found the Vikings too hot to handle and were soundly beaten 6-2.
Cozy Warriors put in a fine performance to end all-square with Scruffy Macs, while the Barracuda Bytes team went back up the TF1 with a smile on their faces after a late, late win at Naughty Nautas. Bar 180C stole a march on the inactive Emerald Lounge with a close 5-3 success at Amistad 2, and Chipeque are still clinging on to Division 2 title hopes after thrashing Sundowners 2. Elsewhere, Amistad 1 made light work of Trap Door, inflicting a 7-1 crushing on them.
