for months; it has been threatened for years, but none of us thought we would lose the Sky service! It was originally thought that the core ‘Free Sat Channels’, as they are known - BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 - would move. The reason behind this was the launch of a new

satellite called Astra 2F, which was launched by satellite operator SES on 28th September 2012 on board an Ariane 5 rocket from Kourou, French Guiana. The new satellite was the first of three, 2E, 2F and 2G, which, ironically, was set to provide increased capacity for pan-European services. It transpired that
only Channel 5 moved in November 2012, available here now only on a large three-metre dish, albeit with a very weak, intermittent signal, while the others remained in place. Last month the BBC said: “There is curr-ently some speculation about the timing of forthcoming continued on page 3

The shock switch-off
continued from front moves of BBC services between satellites, and the reason for these changes. “The quick answer is that, as a result of SES’s fleet replacement programme, BBC services will move in the second half of 2013. “In February 2012, SES retired Astra 2D, and BBC services moved to a new, temporary home on Astra 1N. Astra 1N is due to take up its permanent position in 2013 (19°East), so the BBC’s services will move to their new,
permanent home on Astra 2E (28.2°East) when that becomes operational. “SES expects Astra 2E to launch in Q2 2013, so we currently expect to transition BBC services to it during summer 2013.” The channels now unobtainable seem to be increasing by the day. If you possess a Sky HD box, then you should be able to locate the standard channel as opposed to HD. Now that some Sky

channels are not being received in the Canary Islands, it means that confusion reigns. According to the transmission footprint, they should be receivable on a small one-metre dish. But at present they are not even functioning on a large dish. A source told Canarian Weekly, “It is thought that the loss of channels, (there may be more) will be temporary, lasting for possibly six months. All the lost channels have gone to another beam which we can not receive here in Tenerife. Then, those channels will move to a new satellite, Astra 2E.” But this is also not

know what channels we will get back. There are other solutions for sports addicts such as Abu Dhabi, Al Jazeera, Showtime and OSN. As to whether to keep your Sky subscription is entirely up to you, you may have to give one months notice, or, you may be locked in for 12 months. In conclusion, perhaps it’s time for Tenerife to invest in some cabling so that we can move with technology and all benefit from internet TV. Then satellite dishes, like the John Logie Baird story will be consigned to the history books. We live (and watch) in hope!
Tenerife - fit for Fitur THE southern municipality of Arona has received an A + in the Transparency Index of the municipalities (ITA 2012), prepared by Transparency International Spain. Arona City Council is at the top of the Canaries in the Transparency Index of the municipalities (ITA 2012), prepared by Transparency International Spain, which “measures the level of transparency of Spanish municipalities to citizens and society”. Specifically, Arona ranks 29 (out of 110 municipalities audited throughout the whole country), with a score of
91.3 out of 100, placing it way ahead of the other Canarian municipalities that were included in this study. Transparency International Spain analysed a total of 80 indicators, assessing issues such as corporate information, public relations, economic and financial transparency, transparency in contracting services as well as planning and public works. The local Arona government has welcomed the news, and say “this is the result of the efforts of this group for portfolio management making it as transparent as possible.”

TENERIFE returns to FITUR this week with innovative activities to promote the island. FITUR is one of the most important annual tourism fairs; it’s being held in Madrid from the 30th January to the 3rd February. Tenerife will be part of the 1,827m2 Canary Island's stand. A series of working meetings with major national tour operators and exclusive events to show the island’s cuisine whilst looking to attract investment in the island are some of the initiatives prepared. Tenerife’s presence at the show will begin the day before on the 29th January, with a celebration media event which will be attended by 30 national gastronomic journalists. Three outstanding dishes will be prepared by island chefs with local produce, which will be accompanied by wines from the five appellations of Tenerife. The cooks are Juan Carlos Clemente, Braulio Simancas and Seve Diaz, who will travel to the capital with sommelier Hugo Javier Perez. A similar event will take place the following day, when 30 heads of large French companies based in Spain notably
Renault, Total, Veolia, Deloitte, BNP Paribas and L’Occitane will experience Tenerife’s cuisine. The aim is to introduce the great investment opportunities on the island grouped under the brand Why Tenerife?. Meetings with representatives of the four major Spanish tour operators, Globalia, Orizonia, Viajes El Corte Ingles and Soltour as well as independent agencies working with them will take place, as was done last year with excellent results. Each meeting will have about 70 attendees each and show the new tourist destination with firsthand market trends and developments
scheduled for 2013. The Tenerife delegation will be headed by the Cabildo President, Ricardo Melchior, the Minister of Tourism of the Cabildo, Carlos Alonso, and the CEO of Tenerife Tourism Corporation Miguel Angel Santos. They will visit alongside Ashotel representatives, the ten municipalities of the island and more than 100 tourism businesses associated with Tourism. Working for increased air connectivity and the increasing number of domestic travellers in 2013 is the aim of the 20 meetings scheduled. They will be highlighting the new features like the five territories grouped
within ‘Tenerife, volcanoes for life’, culture and heritage of different areas of the island, the vast choices you have for sports or growing wine tourism opportunities presented, along with the traditional arguments that have been consolidated among preferred tourist destinations in Spain and Europe: climate, proximity and variety of accommodation for all segments of visitors. The Spanish market is second in importance only to the island behind Briton. 24% of the nearly five million tourists received by Tenerife in 2012 were Spanish, representing a total of 1,183,088 visitors.

Crowds attend San Sebastian in Adeje
News In Brief Tourist figures are down
THE number of foreign visitors to the Canary Islands last year fell by 0.7% to 10.1 million. But the islands were the third mostpopular destination in Spain. Overall, Spain received 57.7 million international tourists, representing a 2.7% increase on the previous year. And the total of Russian visitors increased by almost 40% to more than 1.2 million.
More bad weather ahead
THE Canary Islands are still on a yellow weather warning for rough seas and high winds, as we go to print. According to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).
Madrid received an orange alert for snow earlier in the week. And at the same time, a further 40 provinces were at risk from snow, wind, rough seas and low temperatures.
Metro woman rescued
A SPANISH woman had a lucky escape in the country’s capital after falling on to the track at Madrid’s Marques de Vadilla metro station.
The incident was shown on Spanish and UK television as a 38-year-old off-duty policeman bravely rescued the 52 year-old woman, who fainted and tumbled headfirst on to the rails. An incoming train managed to stop before reaching the platform because the driver realised there was problem when people waved signalling him to stop.
Paraglider is saved
A PARAGLIDER was rescued on Wednesday afternoon after crashlanding on to the beach in La Caleta.
The emergency services attended the scene and the 35-year-old victim was transferred to hospital with leg injuries.
Woman suspect is held
GUARDIA Civil have arrested a female resident of Valle San Lorenzo, suspected of stealing 55,775 euros in cash from the safe of the company where she worked as a cleaner.
The woman was said to have used the security code, and the money has not yet been recovered.

ORE than 2 5 , 0 0 0 people, according to data provided by the local police in Adeje, attended on Sunday the celebration of San Sebastian, including more than 60 horses with their riders, a camel, sheep, goats, donkeys, dogs, etc. all received the blessing of the saint.
The horse show was definitely the highlight of this day, as every year it attracted the attention of many people on the shore to see first hand the skill of the riders when the horses enter the water. The day passed off without incident and was hailed a great success. According to historian John Bethencourt Alfonso (1847-1913), the beach was already a place of worship for the Guanches, where they held prayers and processions led by guadameñes (priests). Here also appeared at the beginning of the conquest the Virgin of the Incarnation, as Fray Alonso de Espinosa cites in his book “History of Our Lady of Candelaria”. The first references to the cult of San Sebastian in Adeje appeared in the
late sixteenth century. Initially what was worshiped was a picture of the saint, which is currently in the Church of St. Ursula. According to tradition, from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century the
festival was organised by the residents of Adeje. Then in the 1940s, the Brotherhood of Farmers and Growers Association was responsible for organising, awarding prizes to the best cattle. The celebration
was to go down to the saint from the parish of St. Ursula in Adeje to Enramada beach. This festival promotes a meeting in which young and old relive a tradition involving residents of the island.

Nearly six million now jobless SPAIN’S registered jobless total in 2012 reached a record 5,965,400 people, which was 26.02% of the workforce and 3% up on the previous year.
The latest data published yesterday (Thursday) by the Natonal Institute of Statistics (INE), shows the number of unemployed rose by 291,700 (13.12%). And in the last quarter of 2012 alone, employment dropped by a staggering 363,300 (2.1%). Those employed dropped by 176,000 between October and December, and especially noticeable among them were those under-25s, and by 158,700 compared with the same period in 2011. The number of men out of work increased by 11.77% during the course of 2012 and 2.29% in the last quarter. Women fared even worse, with the jobless tally going up by 14.69% across
the year, and by 4.34% in the last quarter. Yet out-of-work foreigners fell by 4,000 across the year, although the figure increased by 39,400 in the last quarter to reach a total of 1,221,800 (36.53%). The service sector has been the worst hit over the past 12 months, with 1,737,300 people
losing their jobs. In the building industry, 387,900 people fell by the wayside, which was 64,800 fewer than in 2011. The Canary Islands closed 2012 with 368,400 unemployed after posting growth of 7.7%, bringing the jobless rate to 32.96%. However, from the
third quarter, the largest archipelago accumulated fall in unemployment in the country, was 9,800 people (2.59%). Nationally, unemployment rose by 691,700 people in 2012 compared with 2011, up 13.1%. Region by region, unemployment went up in 15 autonomous communities, headed by Andalusia, where 194,100 more people joined the dole queue last year, and Catalunya (109,700) The figures fell only in the Balearic Islands (12,500) and in La Rioja (1,200).
IT’S just about the most incredible picture of all and harder still to believe.
Firefighters, struggling for hours to put out a huge fire at an empty Chicago warehouse, watched in amazement as sub-zero temperatures turned their hosepipe water to ice! It was one of the biggest blazes there in recent years, and one-third of the city’s firefighters - some 200 in all - played their part at one stage or another.
But all eyes were on the building, the fire engines and a pile of chemical drums as the ice engulfed them all. The water even froze on the firefighters’ uniforms and gloves. But they persisted and won in the end, after dicing with the weirdest of conditions for hours, The American Midwest has been suffering a fiercely-cold snap since the weekend, with freezing Arctic air coming from Canada. But nothing could have prepared the city for this mind-boggling sight.

Even though Sor María’s death has just been announced, it
is thought that she actually passed away on Tuesday and has already been buried according to the charitable association SOS Bebés Robados (SOS Stolen Babies). Sor María did give evidence on the 12th April 2012 after María Luisa Torres accused her of having stolen her newborn daughter way back in 1982.

Madrid 2020
T
HE Mayoress of Madrid, the President of the Spanish Olympic Committee and the Patrons of the Madrid 2020 Foundation [Fundación Madrid 2020] attended the event.
Mariano Rajoy, after being handed the candidature file by the Mayoress of Madrid, Ana Botella, expressed his conviction that this report will be “an unparalleled example of the level of excellence that can be achieved when local, regional and national governments work together and lend each other their loyal support.” The President of the Government highlighted that Madrid’s organisational capacity is extremely well-proven, although the most outstanding feature of this bid, in his opinion, is the fact that “the Olympic challenge today unites the whole the country in hopeful anticipation,” since it is a great national bet. As proof of this, he mentioned the fact that
the Madrid 2020 Foundation, which supports the project, comprises representatives from the Spanish national government, regional government, Madrid City Council, political groups, the Spanish Olympic Committee, business men and trade unions. Rajoy stated that the spokespersons of the entire society are saying that this is not an exclusive project for one single city. The ‘Spain’ brand Rajoy stated that, just as the Barcelona games marked a turning point for Spain’s image as an advanced society, these 2020 games are a shared
ambition that will prove “to the whole world what we Spaniards are capable of achieving when we all cooperate and join efforts under a common boost. In this respect, he stressed that this candidature is “an opportunity to demonstrate our country’s capacity and strengthen our faith in ourselves.” “Sports, he added, are one of our great assets and contribute to creating the ‘Spain’ brand. “Our sportsmen and women’s successes project to the whole world a positive image of respect and admiration for our
country, which will be further strengthened by the games. The Olympics are a showcase to the world and synonymous with new projects and opportunities that build trust and lead to investment,” he asserted. For these reasons, Rajoy described the government’s support for the Madrid Olympic bid as “firm, outright and clear,” stating that “they can count on our unconditional support until that decisive moment on September the 7th, when we all hope to hear Madrid nominated in Buenos Aires.”
Ryanair makes emergency landing RYANAIR flight FR4632 travelling from Valencia to Bergamo in northern Italy is thought to have had to make an emergency landing in Genoa
this week when the pressure system failed. Ryanair issued a press release confirming the incident and apologising "sincerely to all our
passengers for any inconvenience caused". The low-cost airline's statement said that its pilot had reacted "as soon as a warning light
came on to indicate a possible problem with cabine pressure. In line with standard operating procedures, oxygen masks were deployed and the pilot began his controlled emergency descent to an altitude where air pressure was not an issue". Afterwards, the plane "landed without incident at Genoa airport at approximately 09.50 hours". The passengers were transferred to Bergamo by bus whilst Ryanair's engineers inspected the Boeing 737-800 aircraft, the statement confirmed. Italian media confirmed that two women, who had been on board the flight which consisted of 93 passengers in total, had complained of chest pain and were hospitalised.

Whopper of a blow stuns Burger King!
F
A S T- F O O D chain Burger King is getting rid of thousands of burgers from the supplier at the centre of the horsemeat scandal.
But though the company is adamant its beefburgers are not contaminated, it means that Whoppers and Angus burgers will not be available to customers right now. Burger King was tainted by the controversy last week, after tests showed that the Silvercrest meat processing plant in Ireland, and another site in Yorkshire, had supplied burgers with traces of equine DNA to supermarkets.
Several supermarkets across Ireland and the UK took burgers off the shelves - 10 million in all - as a result of the scandal. Burger King said last Thursday it would not be following suit. But by the weekend, however, its restaurant managers were being ordered to remove all Silvercrest burgers. The company says it will now switch to

a different supplier for its British and Irish restaurants as a “voluntary and precautionary measure”. The ABP Food Group, one of Europe’s biggest suppliers and processors, halted work at its Silvercrest plant in Co Monaghan, Northern Ireland, after tests last week revealed contamination in frozen burgers.
But ABP insisted that meat for Burger King was stored and processed separately, and there was no evidence that its burgers were affected. Burger King said the withdrawal could lead to shortages of burgers in its restaurants, adding: “We apologise to our guests for any inconvenience. However, we want to let them know that they can trust us to serve only the highest quality products. “We take this matter seriously and will continue with our investigations to determine how this situation occurred, and what lessons can be learned.” Tesco took out fullpage adverts in a number of national newspapers,
apologising for selling the contaminated beefburgers, and Aldi, Lidl and Iceland also withdrew burgers after they were found to contain horsemeat, which is safe to eat. Sainsbury’s, Asda
and the Co-op later withdrew some frozen products, but they stressed that the move was “purely precautionary” and they had not been found to be selling contaminated food.

Tenerife, volcanoes for life A
S part of the Tenerife Cabildo initiative ‘Volcanoes for life’, an investment of 95,000 euros has been made to develop the viewing point Los Poleos in Santiago del Teide. The work is just one part of a much larger project to boost tourism with the volcano related theme, designed by Turismo de Tenerife. Carlos Alonso, Tenerife Cabildo VicePresident, explained that “this action, which will be completed soon, has received an investment of 95,000
euros and adds to existing activity carried out at the viewpoints of La Crucita (Arafo) and Pino Gordo (Vilaflor). “ The Los Poleos viewpoint, located on the TF-38, within the Parque Natural de la Corona Forestal area consists of refurbishing the whole area, improving the area for vehicles to stop and a new pathway. After a joint effort developed with business and local entities from Tenerife, ‘Volcanoes for life’ has managed to design a full range of activities through five major volcanic areas in which the island has been classified and where tourists can learn more about volcanic manifestations present in Tenerife.
Take the bus and see all the sights
THE big, red, City Sightseeing bus in Santa Cruz is proving more and more popular with visitors from the Island and tourists. In 2012, some 78,928 people enjoyed viewing Tenerife’s capital from the familiar bus, and that number is expected to increase this year. And it is even more of an attractive proposition now because the 16-euro ticket incorporates a new range of offers and promotions. Included are special discount offers for museums, restaurants, ice-cream shops and many other facilities and places around the city.
Page 8
There’s even a free shuttle thrown in on TITSA’s No 910 bus to Las Teresitas - which features a beautiful beach - when the tour has finished. And you can use the same ticket for a free ride back into the city when you have enjoyed exploring that area, or sunbathed. City Sightseeing, a brand created in Spain in 1997 to spread internationally, has done just that. And with strategic alliances with local partners, the Spanish Government’s plan is to reach hundreds of cities around the world. The brand is already prevalent in such iconic
capitals as London, Paris, Rome, New York, Barcelona, Moscow, Sevilla , Istanbul, Singapore, Edinburgh, Brussels, Copenhagen, Glasgow, Dublin, Oxford, Sydney, Cape Town and Panama. In Spain, City Sightseeing is present in 10 cities: Barcelona, Benalmadena, Cadiz, Cordoba (from March), Granada, Gran Canaria’s Las Palmas, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Santander and Sevilla. Such is the popularity of the big red bus in all these places that City Sightseeing attracted more than 13 million customers in total last year.

A GREAT BIG THANK YOU from James Logie TO all Bar owners, staff and customers who contributed to the fund to help Jimmy after his accident and hospitalisation. A special big THANK YOU to Oasis Radio, who broadcast his plight, and enabled so many of you unsung heroes to go up to Santa Cruz to visit him when he was stuck on his own in the Candelaria hospital, lying on his back and unable to move. Those visits made all the difference to our poor 21-yearold. An extra big THANK YOU, too, goes to BILLY PORTER, whose constant visits to Jimmy kept him in great spirits, and who raised such huge amounts of cash for the fund. THANK YOU also to the Thomson Welfare team for coordinating everything and looking after him, especially Carla, who gave up her personal laptop for over a month so that Jimmy could watch DVDs. Jimmy had the
operation to fix his fractured vertebrae on 8th January, and was discharged from hospital last Friday (5 weeks after his admission). He flew back to Glasgow on 19th January – the happiest boy on earth! He had the chance of his family flying over to collect him which would mean staying a few days longer. But he was so eager to get home, he flew alone with a back brace and wheelchair assistance. The final sum raised was a staggering 2,832 euros! This money paid for his back brace, his flight home, and the remainder means he was able to refund the money his grannie paid on her VISA card to settle the hospital bill. But more than anyone, thank you to Gowan and Roberto, who started the campaign to help James, and whose tireless efforts brought about such fantastic results! The world needs more people like you! THANK YOU ALL!

Sad death of Agony Aunt Christine CHRISTINE Craggs-Hinton, Canarian Weekly’s Agony Aunt, has died at the age of 60 after battling poor health for years.
She passed away on Saturday in Tenerife’s Hospiten Rambla, a specialist hospital in Santa Cruz, and leaves a husband, David, sons Mark, James and Mathew, her mother, Mabel and a brother, Glenn. She also had four grandchildren - Thomas, William, Ben, Zachary and five step-grandchildren: Charlotte, Alex, Ellie, Matthew and Jessica. Her Dear Christine column appeared fortnightly for several years and it became a regular
Page 10
question-and-answer forum, attracting people with problems from all over South Tenerife. She was born in Bradford and lived there for most of her life,
firstly in Low Moor then Baildon, Shipley. Christine was forced to take early retirement from the Inland Revenue in 1992 because of her health after con-
tracting fibromyalgia (fibrositis). It is a chronic condition which causes pain, stiffness and tenderness of muscles, tendons, and joints with-
out detectable inflammation. She started writing for a hobby shortly after this as a strategy to cope with her illness. That led to her helping to found the Fibromyalgia support and carer’s group in West Yorkshire and, ultimately, becoming editor of their newsletter. Christine decided to write a self-help and information book on fibromyalgia, based on her experiences, and found a publisher in 1999. It was published in 2000 and became the first British book on the subject. To date, it has sold over 50,000 copies. Spurred on by her success, and encouraged by the publisher to write more books, she went on to produce a total of 20 on vari-

Corrie honours Jack Duckworth at National TV Awards show
T
HE stars of Coronation Street stars paid tribute at Wednesday’s National Television Awards to the late Bill Tarmey, who played Jack Duckworth.
The long-running ITV soap was named Best Serial Drama, while Alan Halsall, Tarmey’s on-screen foster son Tyrone Dobbs, won the award for Serial Drama Performance. Halsall became great friends with Tarmey, who died at his holiday home in Tenerife last year after playing Jack Duckworth in the soap for decades. “I love you pal,” he said as he collected his award.” Later, he said the actor would be looking down on him. “I’m sure he is,” he added. “He’ll be having a pint of Guinness for me. wife asked me to wear his watch tonight, so I’ve got it on. And this is for him,” he said, indictating the award. “He guided me literally from the start of my career at Coronation Street. He was such a huge, huge influence on my life, like a second dad on screen. “He’d be laughing at this right now. He used to say, ‘None of that
bloody acting’.” Corrie producer Phil Collinson also paid tribute to Tarmey, saying: “This year, we lost a stalwart of Coronation Street, who was just so much a part of everybody’s life for a long time, and we’d love to dedicate this to Bill. The first award, for Best Entertainment Programme, went to I’m A Celebrity...
Get Me Out Of Here! Two contestants who survived last year’s jungle stint, Helen Flanagan and Ashley Roberts, picked up the award, saying the 2012 winner, EastEnder Charlie Brooks, was supporting a friend who was giving birth. The second award went to Sir David Attenborough’s BBC natural history show Frozen Planet, which won Best Documentary Series. QI was named Best Comedy Panel Show, and one of the big surprises saw Merlin star Colin Morgan win the award for Best Male Drama Performance. He beat much-fancied rivals in Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch and Doctor Who’s Matt Smith. Downton Abbey was named Best Drama, ahead of the popular Sherlock and Doctor Who.

R I N C E H A R R Y made no bones about it this week in his first interview since returning from his second tour in Afghanistan.
The 28-year-old Apache co-pilot gunner, who wants to do more charity work, told the media that killing the Taliban was a job “you would expect to do” as a soldier. The Prince made headlines after confirming that he shot dead insurgents from the cockpit, saying he took the enemy “out of the game”. And responding to his comments, he said: “You get asked to do things that you would expect to do wearing this uniform. That’s as simple as that, really.” He also said he was “very happy to be back after his 20-week tour, and was “longing” to see his brother, William, and sister-in-law Kate, along with the rest of his family. ‘River of fat’ blamed for bulldozed homes
S
IX homes on the edge of the North Sea have been bulldozed because of a leaking “river of fat” from a local chip factory, say residents. People living on a housing estate near Scarborough maintain that landslips have been caused there, partly because of the factory. The 56-home estate, inhabited mainly by elderly people, is in danger of sliding off a cliff and into the North Sea and, they say, the imminent disaster is “man-made”. According to a report commissioned by the residents’ association of Knipe Point, which represents the 56home estate, the finger of suspicion points at leaks from pipes carrying effluent from the McCain Foods factory, famed for its oven chips. The crumbling cliff has blighted the lives of those living there
since 2008, and six of houses have had to be bulldozed because they are too dangerous for people to live in. Artist Kane Cunningham is the latest to be ordered by the council to rip his home down because it is a risk. He bought his home in 2009 for £3,000 as part of an art project, and to use as a studio. He was told it would topple off the cliff within three months. But that was three years and three weeks ago, although he has lost
another seven feet of his garden in recent days. Mr Cunningham said he was surprised to read in the report by environmental scientists and engineering geologists, Ashton Bennett, that the problem was “manmade”. He said the council had previously told them that it was ancient Ice Age water surfacing which had caused the landslips. However, the latest report, after a yearlong study, apportioned some blame for the
subsidence on water from the McCain factory in Osgodby, less than half-a-mile from the estate. It said: “The test results of the water issues, and the effluent from McCain’s factory within YW (Yorkshire Water) pipes, indicates that leakage of effluent within YW pipes is the most likely source of the water issues.” An analysis of the effluence from the McCain factory said it contained oil and grease, along with other chemicals, the report
found, evident in the water which had leaked into the cliff. Mr Cunningham added: “This is not a natural disaster. This is a man-made disaster - and we can prove somebody is responsible. “Six houses have been demolished in the last three years. If the problem is not stopped, then the rest of the estate will go as well. “For me, it’s because of a river of fat - and for me, that’s what’s happened. These houses have just slipped off.” He stressed that McCain prided itself in being environmentally friendly and that he hoped the company and Yorkshire Water would help to stop the problem. “At the end of the day, I have lost my house,” said Mr Cunningham. “I’ve always known that was going to happen, but if I can use my situation to help others, then I will be happy.” A McCain statement read: “Like everyone else in Scarborough, we are well aware of the long-standing
geological issues at Knipe Point. “We employ around 1,000 people in the area and, throughout the four decades we have been here, we have always played an active and responsible role in the community. “As part of this commitment, we have participated constructively on a voluntary basis in past authoritative studies, which have concluded that inherent and unstable geological conditions at Knipe Point are the most probable reason for the issue. “We have only received a copy of the new document from the Knipe Point property owners in the last few days and, as we always take community representations seriously, we have asked geological experts to assess the document’s contents before commenting further.” Yorkshire Water said it was considering the findings of the report and would respond to residents as quickly as possible.
Irish fears over ‘crazy’ windmills THE world’s largest wind turbines in the world could eventually be installed across Ireland’s midlands. It follows this week’s agreement between UK and Irish ministers. And the towers, stretching more than 600ft (180 metres) in the air, are set to generate energy for millions of UK homes in five years. The British Government says the Irish power is a cheaper form of renewable than offshore wind. But environmentalists have described the scheme as “crazy” and say it risks damaging the landscape. A number of companies are seeking to erect hundreds of wind turbines across the boggy midlands of Ireland.
Page 14
The power generated would be transferred to the UK, via undersea cables, which would join the grid at two points in Wales. One developer, Element Power, says the plan would save UK consumers around £7bn over 15 years, compared with other renewable sources. The developers also say that thousands of jobs will be created in Ireland, will give its sagging economy there a huge boost. But concerns are growing that the turbines needed to provide the power will be vastly bigger than those already seen in Britain or Ireland. Because the bog lands are relatively windless, the company behind
the scheme says they will need to stretch high into the sky to catch sufficient wind to generate power. “They will be spread around 40 clusters in five counties,” said Element Power’s Peter Harte. “We felt it was better to built slightly larger turbines, but fewer of them, which is the best way to minimise the impact on the local area.”
But opponents say that locals have not been consulted, and that few actually realise just what an impact the turbines will have on the landscape. People don’t understand the scale of them,” said Andrew Duncan, spokesman for the Lakelands Wind Information group, which is opposed to the plan. “Putting up the largest turbines in the world
without consultation is ludicrous.” He believes that political opposition to wind energy in the UK is the real reason behind the plan. “It seems to be an Irish solution to a British problem,” he added. “Politically, they don’t want turbines on the British countryside. “They are under a lot of pressure from the general public, and it seems they want to impose these wind farms on the Irish general public instead.” There will now a further year of review before a potential treaty between the UK and the Irish Republic is signed. Irish Energy Minister Pat Rabbitte said the process was in its infancy, and that no
decisions had been made about how the energy for export would be generated. “I think there is a mutual interest here for both countries,” he told BBC News, adding: “Ireland doesn’t want a wind farm at every crossroads; we don’t want that.” Richard Tol, professor of economics at University of Sussex, felt that the whole scheme was “crazy” and would not work in the long term. “From an Irish perspective, this is not selling the family silver; this is giving it away,” he said. “There is no money staying in Ireland that I can see. But from the British perspective, it is a good deal.”

Hazard ‘warning’ missed by Eden
T
HE ballboy at the centre of a “kicking” storm at Swansea on Wednesday had had joked in a tweet about timewasting. Chelsea’s Belgian star Eden Hazard was said to have kicked 17-yearold Charlie Morgan in frustration after he refused to let go of the ball when it went out of play for a goal-kick and even fell on top of it. The incident happened 10 minutes from time, with the score at 0-0 and Swansea leading 2-0 from the first leg of their Capital One Cup semifinal - an advantage they maintained to reach the final against Second Division Bradford. Hazard, who was sent off, said he kicked the ball and not the teenager. Nevertheless, he later apologised and is not facing criminal
charges. South Wales Police have spoken to Charlie, who was unharmed, and his father, a Swansea club director, and no complaint has been made. Before the game, which saw Swansea reaching a major final for the first time in their 100-year history, Charlie had tweeted: “The king of all ballboys is back. making his final appearance #needed #for #timewasting.” He lay on the ground grimacing after the kick, and Hazard later told told Chelsea TV: “The boy put his whole body on to the ball and I was just trying to kick the ball. And I think I kicked the ball and not the boy. I apologise. “The ballboy came in the changing room and we had a quick chat. I apologised and the boy apologised as well, and it is over. Sorry.” Hazard’s team-mates reacted angrily to the

sending-off, but several Chelsea players went to tend to Charlie, who was left holding his ribs, before referee Chris Foy produced a red card. Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez said: “The boy knows he was wasting time. Hazard was frustrated and trying to get the ball back. “We can not change the situation. We are disappointed because we lost a player. The best thing for us is to move forward.” Swansea’s dynamic young manager, Michael Laudrup, said he expected Hazard would regret the incident when he viewed it on television. “I saw it from a very big distance from the bench,” he said. “I’ve since seen it after the game. Hazard is a great player, but when he sees the images, I think he will regret it.” But he did add: “I can understand all the frustrations when you are behind.”

Now we have the musical Olympics! A SERIES of rock concerts will be staged in London’s Olympic Park this summer.
The revamped east London area, once a desolate wasteland, will host two huge festivals in July following a deal with events promoter Live Nation Entertainment. The company will also hold other concerts in the park’s Olympic Stadium, scene of so many wonderful British successes last summer, after gaining exclusive rights to the venue. The £292m transformation of the Olympic Park, which began when the London 2012 Games ended, is set to take 18 months. The 560-acre site, featuring new homes and schools, state-of-
the-art venues and public parklands, is set to reopen to the public in stages between this July and early 2014. Live Nation is leaving its previous venue in London’s Hyde Park after friction with residents over noise and timing restrictions. Rock fans were angered last summer when officials pulled the plug on a Bruce Springsteen-Paul McCartney duet in midsong. Details of the acts and dates will be announced by the spring, but they will certainly feature headline groups. Concerts starring Springsteen, Rihanna and Coldplay were among more than 400 European shows and performances staged by Live Nation in the past year.
New iPhone's app is helping crime-fighters GREATER Manchester Police have launched an innovative way for locals to help tackle crime, via a new iPhone app from them.
The free app, unique in Britain, uses GPS technology to provide updates on local crime, appeals and neighbourhood policing teams. Manchester users can also pinpoint their nearest police station, or use an “around me” feature to view local news and appeals. It even shows “wanted” people nearby, and tells users what they look like and what they are wanted for. Deputy Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said: “This is a real step forward in using technology to support policing, and it gives people the chance to help us at any time and any place.
Page 16
“They can find out what is happening, where they are and be kept informed. We want people to help us add to it with what will help them on a daily basis.” All appeals shown on the app allow users to send information on what they know directly to the police and, said Detective Superintendent Mark Smith: “We rely on the information we get from people to help us to solve crimes. “The app means people can send details, no matter where they are, and help us to target criminals.” The iPhone app, developed by the police staff, is available from the App Store, and an Android version will be available in the Spring. It can also be accessed through the GMP website www.gmp. police.uk along with a snapguide of how it can be used.
Army facing more cuts
T
HE British Government plans to get rid of up to 5,300 soldiers in the latest round of job cuts. It is the third wave of redundancies, and the Navy and RAF will be affected least because they have already completed most of their necessary cuts. Despite the severity of numbers, anyone serving in Afghanistan when the redundancy notices are issued on 18th June will be exempt. And soldiers recovering from a recent tour of duty, or those preparing to deploy within the next six months, will not be affected, either. The announcement signals the start of the elimination process, and final decisions will not be taken until June. Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said: “The Army is actively managing recruitment to reach the target numbers. But unfortunately, redundancies are unavoidable because of the size of the defence deficit that this
Government inherited, and the consequent scale of downsizing required in the Army. “We will have smaller Armed Forces, but they will, in future, be properly-equipped and well-funded, unlike before. “These redundancies will not affect current operations in Afghanistan, where our Armed Forces continue to fight so bravely on this country’s behalf.” General Sir Peter Wall, Chief of the General Staff, added: “The Army is, unfortunately, reducing to 82,000 by 2015 and this tranche of redundancy is essential to achieving that.” Yet the UK still faces real or potential threats around the globe, demonstrated in the past few weeks by the hostage situation in Algeria and conflict in Mali. Some, particularly retired service chiefs, question Britain’s ability to face these threats with a reduced military - and gaps in the equipment locker. The Government will again need to convince detractors, home and abroad, that the UK military can still earn
international respect, despite its reduced size. In the final cuts last year’, in June, 72% of the redundancies ended up being voluntary. Military leaders and politicians are hoping for a similar outcome this time. Anyone accepted for voluntary redundancy will be expected to work a sixmonth notice period, and those selected for compulsory redundancy will have a full year to find alternative employment before leaving the service. They will also be given resettlement support. By the end of the process, the Army will have shrunk to 82,000 soldiers - a reduction of around 20,000 - mostly through a redundancy process, but also achieved through slower recruitment. The Ministry of Defence has also confirmed that further cuts to the Army, Navy and RAF are “likely” but it would not say when. The job losses are part of a strategic review, driven by budget cuts, which aims to produce a new-look military by 2020. The biggest commitment is in
Afghanistan, where 9,000 personnel are deployed in the country - but the withdrawal process starts this year and, by the end of 2014, most soldiers will have returned home. Last October, the Defence Secretary announced plans to rename the Territorial Army the Reservists and double its members to 30,000. There is also a hope that some of those leaving the military because of the redundancy scheme might sign up to the TA, so that their experience is not lost. By the end of the redundancies, the number of serving personnel in all three services will be reduced by 30,000 to 150,000. That will result in the smallest army since the 18th century - and plenty of concerns over effectiveness. It is not just serving military personnel taking the hit because the Ministry of Defence is in the process of cutting around 25% of its staff. The aim is to save £3.8m a year, and to make the department less top-heavy with management.

Michael Winner’s lasting legacy
M
ICHAEL WINNER, the film director and restaurant critic who died on Monday at the age of 77, leaves an everlasting legacy. The Death Wish trilogy, featuring Charles Bronson, horrified some critics at the time especially the first film -, but it will go down as his finest work. Winner, who had been ill for some time, died at his London home in Kensington, where he was being nursed by Geraldine, his wife of two years. They were married two years ago - his first trip down the aisle - and she said in a statement on Tuesday: “Michael was a wonderful man - brilliant, funny and generous. A light has gone out in my life.” Funnyman John Cleese also paid tribute, describing him as “the dearest, kindest, funniest and most
generous of friends. I shall miss him terribly.” Winner’s film career spanned more than 50 years yet, curiously, he made little more than 30 films. But he worked with some of the biggest Hollywood stars, including Marlon Brando, Robert Mitchum and Faye Dunaway. He also made a Western in 1971 in America - the first British producer to do so. It featured Burt Lancaster in Lawman and was highly regarded. Winner later reinvented himself as a restaurant critic, writing about food in his typically-flamboyant style in his Winner’s Dinners column for The Sunday Times. It attracted heaps of praise and criticism from all quarters, and he loved every review, good or bad, until he quit for health reasons after 20 years last month. His first film was Shoot To Kill in 1960, and his career took a giant turn upwards when he directed Marlon Brando
25th January - 31st January 2013
in The Nightcomers 12 years later.. Sky’s Lucy Cotter said: “He was very humorous, very cantankerous. I think the people whose restaurants he came into would have, in some ways, dreaded him coming in because he did not hold back in those columns. “He had been ill for a while, but people will be quite surprised to hear
this sad news.” In fact, he had a close brush with death some years ago when he contracted food poisoning during a holiday in Barbados and almost lost a leg. He had another food poisoning episode when he ate steak tartar, a raw dish, on four consecutive nights and was hospitalised again. Winner, who was given
just 18 months to live by liver specialists last October, had suffered other health scares over the years. In February 2003, he spent two nights in a London hospital as a result of a heart condition. Three years later, he embarked on a diet and wrote a book entitled The Fat Pig Diet, in which he claimed to have lost four stone by eating caviar, chocolate, cake and Doritos. The simple message he was putting across was: “Eat what you like - but eat less of it.” Winner was also responsible for the cheesy car insurance advert, in which he coined the phrase “Calm down dear”, later used famously by Prime Minister David Cameron in the House of Commons, which caused a fuss. Dj Danny Baker wrote on Twitter: “A chum, a funny man who twinkled.” And former newspaper editor Piers Morgan tweeted: “Hilarious,
often preposterous, always generous, highlyintelligent man. And terrific writer. RIP.” Music mogul Simon Cowell said: “Laughter was never far away when Michael was around, and he is someone who, the more I got to know, the fonder I got of him. I am sure there are a lot of other people who, like me, will really miss him.” Winner also founded and funded the Police Memorial Trust following the murder of WPC Yvonne Fletcher outside the Libyan embassy in London in 1984. Today, more than 50 officers have been honoured by the trust at sites across the country. Trust manager Steve Lloyd said: “There is no doubt that Michael’s work will be continued, and we at the Trust pass on our sympathies to his family at this sad time. “The work he did on behalf of the policing family brought a lot of comfort to those he recognised.”

We’re after a new Pudsey
T
Accion del Sol refuge
HE next fund-raiser at Accion del Sol will be on Sunday, 3rd February at 2pm, and it promises to be an afternoon of fun for all.
It is a coffee-and-cake afternoon, when Accion supporters will get a chance to meet likeminded people on what should be a busy day. Activities will include a guided tour of the refuge, a theatre animation show and much more, including entertainment from three dance schools. There will also be a chance to show off your own dog’s unusual talent? Can it sing, dance or perform any other unusual tricks. If so, this could be his or her chance of fame, and maybe the next Pudsey (of Britain’s Got Talent fame) is living right here in Tenerife! There will also be a children’s animation
theatre and a bouncy castle, as well as lots of delicious home-made cakes, so make a note in your diary. We’ve had a happy ending concerning last week’s story about the Dalmatian brought in to the refuge, which was micro-chipped, but with an obsolete phone number. He has been reunited with his original owner, who, unfortunately, had to re-home him as she was not in a position to
keep the dog. Now, she is able to keep him so, for once, its previous owner’s failure to change the chip’s phone number has paid a rich dividend. If you are in any doubt about the chip details on your dog, please contact http://zoocan. net/ where you can check them out. Opening hours at the Granadilla refuge are Monday- Friday (36pm), or call 922 778 630 for more information.
Birthday treat for Helping Hands LOCAL charity Helping Hands in Tenerife received a welcome boost last week. following a function at Restaurante Sebastian, in Sunset Bay, Torviscas. Alan Nicolson, a partner in the restaurant and also a partner in local estate agents, Clear Blue Skies Group, held a birthday party there and invited friends and colleagues from Tenerife and Europe. They enjoyed a feast of excellent food and superb wine, provided by Alan’s wife, Louisa,
and they were also treated to a wonderful show by Doug Brown and Elmar, two of the restaurant’s regular entertainers. Guests were invited to contribute to Helping Hands, run by Liz Montague to benefit local children’s charities, and a sum of 395 euros was raised. Clear Blue Skies Group also made a donation to bring the total up to 500 euros, and Liz said: “We are very grateful to the restaurant and to Clear Blue Skies.
“During these difficult times, as usual, it’s the weakest and most vulnerable in society who suffer most. “Helping Hands in Tenerife was set up to try to help those most in need, and this donation will go towards buying special chairs for a school for handicapped in Guargacho, “We hope to organise other such events with Alan’s help, and anyone else wishing to offer us any assistance should contact me on 661 274 281 or email lizmontague@yahoo. co.uk.”

Treasures featured in this programme include a diamond brooch which almost went to a car boot sale for one pound, a marine chronometer left to the owner by a drinking pal, a bronze Spirit of Ecstasy which, if genuine, could be worth 10,000 pounds, and a satsuma pot which David Battie says, 'is as good a piece as I've ever seen on the Roadshow.'.

Life in a Cottage Garden with Carol Klein Winter. Episode 1. Winter has come... harsh frosts have shattered Carol's tulip pots, and her brick paths are ruined. Carol takes shelter in the potting shed and prepares her garlic for spring planting. On finer days, she begins pruning late-flowering clematis, and when the thaw comes she begins a major re-vamp in the borders. As the long dark days pass, the first green shoots of the new year appear. First it is snowdrops in ones and twos, and then in drifts, carpeting the woodland floor. These are then followed by jewel-like hellebores.

Rare wildflowers bloom in the most unusual places and several bird species in decline elsewhere can be seen here - grey partridge, yellowhammer and corn bunting. Winter has come... harsh frosts have shattered Carol's tulip pots, and her brick paths are ruined. Carol takes shelter in the potting shed and prepares her garlic for spring planting. On finer days, she begins pruning late-flowering clematis, and when the thaw comes she begins a major revamp in the borders. As the long dark days pass, the first green shoots of the new year appear. First it is snowdrops in ones and twos, and then in drifts, carpeting the woodland floor. These are then followed by jewel-like hellebores. As winter slides into February, and whilst the trees and shrubs are still in their dormancy, a local woodsman arrives to lay Carol's native hedge.

W C C H O IC E FA Cup Highlights Channel 4, 22:20
The FA Cup fourth round draw presented several Premier League clubs with a potential banana skin against lower league opposition. Uwe Rosler's Brentford of League One beat Southend 2-1 to earn a crack at European champions and FA Cup holders Chelsea. Rafa Benitez's side thrashed Southampton 5-1 in the previous round. Tottenham Hotspur also face a tricky away trip as they head North to take on Leeds. An El Hadji-Diouf penalty was the difference for Neil Warnock's side as they eased past Birmingham to earn a home fourthround tie against the North Londoners. Last year's beaten finalists Liverpool lock horns with League One outfit Oldham. The Latics are managed by Paul Dickov and they will relish another crack at the side who they briefly led when the two sides met in the third round of this competition last year. That match was at Anfield, this time the venue is Boundary Park. Liverpool secured their fourth round spot with a 2-1 win over Conference club Mansfield Town.

Fronted by ITV News Political Editor Tom Bradby, this third series of the show features an unchanged format of four studio guests discussing the coming week’s agenda, with topics ranging from politics to popular culture. Filmed in front of a studio audience at The Hospital Club in Central London, insightful discussion is interspersed with mini video packages to add humour and illustrate the week’s key talking points. Guests in series two, which saw record ratings for the programme, included all three party leaders David Cameron, Nick Clegg, Ed Miliband - along with Harriet Harman, Boris Johnson, William Hague, Hugh Grant, Patrick Stewart, Fiona Shaw and Mariella Frostrup. David Cameron’s appearance marked the first time that a serving British Prime Minister had appeared on a panel show. The Agenda ranges over dozens of topics - from tax avoidance to erotic literature – and comments made on the show that have made the news agenda include Ed Miliband calling for an independent inquiry to the BBC on Jimmy Savile and William Hague giving his views on the Act of Succession.

A chance encounter with supply teacher Aiden ignites a spark that offers Liv a real chance of the happiness and love she deserves.

Meet Derek Noakes (Ricky Gervais) a tender, innocent man whose love for his job and the people he cares for shines through. He’s 49 years old and loves animals, Rolf Harris, Jesus, ‘Deal or No Deal’, ‘Million Pound Drop’ and ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ - but his main hobby is autograph hunting. He works in a retirement home with his mate and landlord, Dougie (Karl Pilkington in his very first acting role). Derek cares deeply for old people because they’re kind and funny and tell him stories about the olden days. Hannah (Kerry Godliman) is a care worker at the home and is Derek’s best friend. She’s smart, witty and hardworking, but unlucky in love, and like Derek, always puts other people first. In this week’s episode, the retirement home’s future comes under threat after a visit from the local council reveals the latest budget cuts are going to have a negative impact on funding. As a result, the councillors decide to conduct an inspection to see whether there are any necessary changes that can be made, such as ‘streamlining’ the number of employees, in order to keep the home open despite the current economic climate. During the home’s assessment, Hannah tries her best to ensure that everything is running smoothly by taking the councillors on a guided tour. Unfortunately however, things don’t go exactly to plan when Derek’s slightly odd friend, Kev, pops up naked in one of the resident’s beds after claiming to have taken a ‘quick nap’. Hannah also introduces the councillors to Derek, Dougie and the other employees so that they can gain a better understanding of everyone’s roles and responsibilities. But after meeting Derek and Dougie they’re not entirely convinced particularly as Derek’s taken to keeping tadpoles in the sink to stop them from being eaten by fish and Dougie has no real training or qualifications.

She is funny, kind - and a complete pushover, but finds it tough being a single mum, especially since her ex is so resolutely useless. Best mate Sam does what she can for her, paying her cash in hand to take her son to school, but she's busy with her own life. So when Sonia, a new mum at the kids' school befriends her, Danielle is grateful for the support. Sonia is the best friend anyone could wish for: loyal, attentive and incredibly generous. Danielle only has to look at a possession of Sonia's and it is in her front room by the following day. Eventually the attention begins to be a bit too much, but Sonia is not about to let Danielle back off - and Danielle does not have the nerve to stand up to her. So when Sonia starts to get scarily intense, Danielle is driven to ever more extreme - and comical - lengths to avoid her.

The second pair of semi-finalists go head to head in service at Midsummer House with double Michelin starred Daniel Clifford who has run the restaurant for 15 years. They must meet the exacting standards of two Michelin star cuisine, making a highly complex dish executed with precision, finesse, delicacy - and it has to be on time. The bar is then raised higher as they compete again, recreating one of Daniel Clifford's signature dishes: rosemary smoked rump of lamb, courgette and basil puree, piquillo pepper puree and a courgette and yogurt dressing. Finally, the chefs return to the studio where they must deliver a main and dessert inspired by their Michelin experience.

The Secret Life of Dogs ITV1, 21.00
With over 400 recognised breeds, dogs can be found in more shapes, sizes and varieties than any other mammal on the planet. During the last few years, scientists have delved deeper than ever before into the canine mind and body and the results are mind-blowing. This one-off, heartwarming and revealing documentary narrated by Martin Clunes, explores the truth behind dogs’ super powers, their undying loyalty and the incredible intuition of man’s best friend. Using intimate macro photography, thermal images and slow motion footage, Secret Life of Dogs examines how dogs see, smell and experience their world. We learn why dogs bark, how they curve their tongues to drink water, whether they are left or rightpawed, why they lick your face, whether they dream, how a husky avoids frostbite - even at temperatures of minus 60, why they pant after a run and how they appear to understand what you are thinking. The documentary follows the development of immensely cute Labrador puppies, from birth through to their own pregnancy, including training to be a Guide Dog for the Blind and also hears personal accounts of dogs that have saved lives, rebuilt marriages and detected diseases.

The Big Reunion will follow their every step, as their worlds are turned upside down after years away from the spotlight. During the series, viewers will see the groups reunited for the first time since they split. For some it’s the chance to relive their dream, for others it may open old wounds as they prepare to face demons they thought they had buried forever. At their peak, these acts dominated UK pop over a 10-year period from the mid nineties, selling millions of singles, albums and achieving multiple number 1’s. Now they will come together for the first time in a decade, to put on the show of their lives. The cameras will capture the highs and lows, tears and tantrums as each of the bands hope they can once again discover the magic that helped them adorn magazine covers, sell out multiple arena tours and top the charts back in their heyday. The Big Reunion, made by ITV Studios, will delve into the lives of these former pop heroes, exploring what happened after they slipped out of the charts. Some have remained in the celebrity spotlight, whilst others left their showbiz lives behind to pursue new careers as diverse as a stilt walker, a midwife, a teacher, a farmer and a wedding photographer. Each band will have just two weeks of intense rehearsals before they step back onto the stage to perform once again in front of thousands of fans. Featuring candid interviews, in the first episode of the brand new series, award winning 90’s favourites 5ive and Liberty X exclusively reveal the highs and lows of life at the peak of the pop world.

Back to normal - and busy! T HE festive season is well and truly over, so it’s back to normal for us, and this is generally a busy time in the furnishing business. That’s because many people decide to improve their properties in the new year, whether for their own use or for to produce an income. While we do continue to offer full furniture packages for new
properties, and, of course, individual items such as sofa beds, mattresses or curtains, the crisis has made fundamental changes to our work. Most people are now working to a budget or, at least, are more conscious of how much they are spending. And we are doing more in the way of reupholstering existing sofas and chairs, and also respraying furniture. There are some complexes particularly suited to this refurb programme, because
the original furniture was of excellent quality and suited

the properties so well. These include Parque Santiago, Royal Palm, Port Royale and Cristian Sur among others. Nevertheless, any furniture in good structural condition can be considered, and this is obviously considerably cheaper than buying new. When clients come to the office to talk about buying a new sofa, I generally ask them why they are thinking about it. For example, some clients in Royal Palm had brought their sofa with them from the UK, and although it was about 15 years old, there was nothing wrong with it structurally. The reason they were looking for a new one was because the existing one was starting to look a bit dated, but you could tell it was of excellent quality, including the cushion filling. By choosing a
more modern fabric in beiges and golds, and slightly modifying the rather fussy design, we were able to completely revamp the old sofa and bring it up to date. Through careful choice of fabric, everything fitted well with their existing curtains and pictures, and the end result was a good one for all involved. Fashions have changed a lot over the last 15 years and, whereas, back then the sofa and curtains would have been matching, it is now more usual to use toning fabrics that work well together. We actually rescued some of the old material from the sofa to make a few scatter cushions, which then tied reupholstered sofa in with the existing curtains. Respraying furniture is also an option for those on a budget - again, as long as it is in good
structural condition. Many apartments were originally sold with pine furniture, which has lasted incredibly well, but looks a bit dated. However, respraying with white or ivory, for example, can give it a whole new lease of life at a fraction of the price of buying a comparable replacement. We are fortunate here to have the climate in which we need to block the sun out - I am sure there are a few people in the UK who would like to have that problem at the moment! In Parque Margarita for example, where our office is based, the sun can be full on and the original sun curtains have seen better days. Again, technology has now moved on, and sun curtain comes not only in white but also in fabric featuring 30 different colours. This means you can replace them, and don’t need a separate curtain to look nice and again, it’s gentler on the budget. So maybe it is the time of year when you need to take a look at your property with fresh eyes, and see if there is something you should be doing to update it. Whether it is spending a few hundred euros to make a property easier to sell, or to bring it up to standard for rental, or whether you need a complete overhaul, come and talk to us at Parque Margarita, with no obligation.

Order now The Dr Hessayon series of expert books is set to publish the latest in the range on the 25th April 2013 – Indoor plant and flower expert.
The new book reveals the craft of Roomscaping. This is the way plants and cut flowers can be used to add beauty to a room in the way we use plants when we landscape our gardens. In its pages the basics of design are clearly explained, and the effect of grouping indoor plants together is described and illustrated. The design secrets of producing professional-looking flower arrangements which turns them into focal points are revealed and there is an A-Z guide of 350 plants and over 400 cut flowers. Hessayon said, “In most homes this plant material ends up as a few isolated pots on the windowsill or sideboard, or as a vase stuffed with a bunch of flowers. Ornaments - not decor features which change the look of the room. We can do so much more with living plants.” Watch this With his Yorkshire accent, zany hat and gold medal pedigree Skipton garden designer Chris Myers has been catapulted onto the small screen. The three-times winner of the BBC Gardeners’ World competition, he now fronts the Channel 4 programme called Wild Things. Accompanied by a botanist and naturalist, he acts as a plant detective and goes on a hunt to discover what grows where in Britain and why? In this weeks episode they visit Salisbury Plain to investigate why a military no-go zone provides the perfect

conditions for wild things to grow. Using explosive stunts and underground experiments, they explore how wild plants have developed their own defence systems to survive, with battleground manoeuvres creating perfect conditions in the soil. Exploding a poppy reveals the secret to the long life of their seeds, and going deep into a puddle uncovers a microscopic battleground, with each tiny wild thing trying to make the most of the temporary conditions. And Britain’s most explosive plant takes on a British Army assault rifle, demonstrating that it has an even faster ballistic system. Did you know? The tallest brussels sprout plant measured 2.8 m (9 ft 3 in) on 17 November 2001. It was growing in the garden of Patrice and Steve Allison (USA) of Newport Beach, California, USA. The highest botanical gardens are Pamir Botanical Gardens near Khorog, Tajikstan, which are at an elevation of between 2,100-3,500 m (6,889-11,483 ft) above sea level. The 12ha (29.6-acre) site was established in 1940 and currently has over 2,000 species of flora. The Betty Ford Alpine Garden in Vail, Colorado, USA is at an altitude of 2,499 m (8,200 ft).
25th January - 31st January 2013
A series of exhibits, horticultural installations, special events, activities and workshops will be used to celebrate and explore the delicious diversity of wild edibles. This festival will showcase the sheer number of edible plants visitors will find at every turn in the Gardens - from vegetables in the Palm House Parterre, to coffee in the Princess of Wales Conservatory. And there are more obscure examples such as tamarind, used as a spice in cooking, and the Barbados cherry, used in jams and syrups. Even rosehips can provide a surprising source of vitamin C! Visitors will be inspired to broaden their relationship with edible plants and fungi, through tasting, growing and learning about a wider range. They will also be inspired to think differently about the plants and fungi they eat, as
well as the wild relatives they are cultivated from. These plants and fungi are sometimes beautiful, sometimes ugly, sometimes surprising and sometimes just plain weird. Kew works to protect this diversity, and the wild relatives of edible plants and fungi. Edible plants and fungi are vital food sources globally, yet we are often unaware of the sheer diversity of what is available to us. Instead, we tend to concentrate our diet on a few species only. Some 80% of our global calorie intake comes from just 12 cultivated plants: eight cereals (barley, maize, millet, rice, rye, sorghum, sugar cane and wheat) and four tubers (cassava, potato, sweet potato and yam). However, at least 30,000 species of plants can be eaten. The humble bakers’ yeast is the single most important fungus to our diet, and is the source of many food products. Wild relatives are a store cupboard of useful genetic diversity. Kew’s ongoing research in this area focuses on species which have a high cultural, ecologi-
cal and economic importance. Plants and fungi are important to all of us because everything we eat comes directly or indirectly from them, and wild plants, especially, are vital for future food security. Everything we see in the supermarket comes from a relative of a wild species. Humans have been moving useful and tasty plants around the globe for thousands of years, spreading them far beyond their countries of origin. And this concept will be brought to life by a Global Garden at Kew. Global Garden This is situated on the Great Lawn opposite Kew Palace and will feature over 90 edible plants from every corner of the globe. Grapes, pomegranate and olive trees will be planted in geographical areas in a circular design of raised beds, featuring stories about the origins and cultural heritage of these plants. Kew’s volunteer guides will provide hands-on sessions for visitors who want to further explore these edible delights. The Palm House This parterre (a formal
garden construction on a level surface) will be planted up entirely with a variety of delicious and curious edibles. The Palm House will be interpreted for visitors as a rainforest larder, emphasising the exotic, edible plants we may not be aware of. Yet we are consuming them when we eat processed foods, such as sugar-cane and vanilla, as well as those that are more recognisable, like Kew’s fabulous banana collection. In the neighbouring Waterlily House, you can explore the crosscontinental and crosscultural stories of the Cucurbitaceae (the pumpkin family) and Capsicum (chilli and peppers). Grass Garden It can be found opposite the Davies Alpine House, displaying some of the world’s most economically-important plants which are a regular feature at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Cultivated grasses (such as wheat and barley) are planted next to their wild relatives. http://www.kew.org/visit-kew-gardens/gardenattractions-A-Z/grassgarden.htm
Try a Hebe THIS week it’s almost like Spring has sprung here with roadsides sprouting daisy like flowers and gorgeous smelling lavender. If you’re thinking of making a pot to brighten up your patio then why not try and find a Hebe, this week I’ve read about ‘Red Edge’ which is a particularly pretty plant. Also known as Veronica it grows well
in full sun or partial shade. You can plant now, but it won’t flower until the weather warms up slightly. Blue, purple flowers sprout from short spike and then fade to white. The grey-green leaves have narrow red margins and veins when young, hence the name. It’s a tiny evergreen shrub, that will work well in a pot.

Even those who have never tried it before are being tempted, It’s a fantastic choice if you’re trying to tone things down, or to cover up hair damage. And adding these sorts of shades will give your hair brilliant shine and gloss, because this colour reflects the light so well. Even if you have a paler shade of skin, you should opt for a more coppery-red to match your skin tone and eye colour. Bright-reds tend to work well with the more daring among you. That’s because they need more upkeep and don’t work well if you are shy on the make-up front. Take note that as long as you get the shade right for your skin tone, then there is a red shade for you. And you must remember to care for it well at home. Make sure, too, that you keep it covered up during the hot spells we have over here, because the fierce Tenerife sun can lift the red out in just one day. The most favourite shades we are using at the moment seem to be the more violet-to-plum
types of red. These are great on darker shades of hair, anthey really complement the more warmer skin tones. Above all, make sure you get the best advice before you try any of these shades, because the wrong tone could look too stark. Consult your stylist and have a full consultation before you start. And make sure you know all the ins and outs that being red entails!
That’s because it is second only to fat in terms of calorie content, say experts. World Cancer Research Fund, says alcohol makes up nearly 10% of total calorie intake among drinkers, so a large glass of wine will cost you the same 178 calories as eating two chocolate digestive biscuits. And it will take you more than a half hour’s brisk walk to burn off. As many of you will know from the regular newspaper bulletins we read, eating or drinking too many calories on a regular basis can lead to weight gain. And alcohol has been linked with breast, bowel,
mouth and liver cancer. But unlike food, alcoholic drinks have little or no nutritional value, and the “empty calories” in drinks are often forgotten or ignored by dieters, says the Research Fund. Kate Mendoza, head of its health information, said: “Recent reports have shown that people are unaware of calories in drinks and don’t include them when calculating their daily consumption.” Men need around 2,500 calories a day and women around 2,000, and Kate added: “Cutting down on drinking can have a big effect on weightloss, or maintaining a healthy weight. It can also reduce your risk of cancer.” If you feel you can’t - or don’t want to - abstain entirely, there are ways to help you cut down, including smaller glass
sizes, diluting alcohol with soda water or a low-calorie soft drink, alternating between alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks and spending a few boozefree nights a week. The Research Fund has produced an alcohol calorie calculator for different drinks, which shows approximately how much exercise is needed to do to burn off the alcohol calories consumed. Government guidelines recommend men should not drink more than 3-4 units of alcohol daily, while women should limit themselves to 2-3 units. A standard 175ml glass of wine contains about two units and a large 250ml glass contains about three. And experts advise that if you have had a heavy drinking session, you should avoid booze for at least 48 hours.

Over 75? Then eat what you like!
M
ANY of us spend decades trying to overcome our food demons by avoiding fast-food restaurants and puddings.
But you may as well forget the battle of the bulge when you hit 75, which will be a relief to some weight-conscious old folk. Scientists from Penn State from Pennsylvania found that elderly people who followed a high-fat or high-sugar diet were no more likely to suffer from conditions such as heart disease and Type 2 diabetes than those following a healthy diet. They spent five years
tracking 449 pensioners, who were around 76 at the start of the study. The scientists called each one five times during a 10-month period and asked about their diet over the previous 24 hours. They then placed them in three broad dietary groups. The “sweet and dairy” pattern included those who got the most energy from baked goods, milk and dairy-desserts. The “health conscious pattern” included higher intakes of rice, whole fruit, poultry, fish and vegetables. And the “western pattern” included higher intakes of bread, fried foods and alcohol. Using out-patient, electronic medical records, the researchers identified whether the
participants developed cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and metabolic syndrome during the five-year period. They found the
participants were no more likely to suffer from these conditions, whatever group they followed. The one link they did find was a slightly higher risk of hypertension
among “sweets and dairy” followers. Study author Gordon Jensen said: “The results suggest that if you live to be this old, then there may be little to support the use of
overly restrictive dietary prescriptions, especially where food intake may already be inadequate. “However, people who live on prudent diets all their lives are likely to have healthier outcomes.” The research, published in the Journal of Nutrition Health and Aging. is one of the first studies to examine the health effects of poor diets on the elderly. Prof Jensen added that the traditional ‘elderly person’ was more likely to be overweight or obese than ‘tiny and frail’. But he stressed that recent reports suggested there may be survival benefits associated with overweight and mild obesity status among the elderly.
Sunbed tanning just isn’t worth risking your health AS many nine out of 10 sunbeds in England fail to meet British and European safety standards. This worrying statistic was uncovered by a Cancer Research UK study, and findings showed that the levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation emitted by 400 sunbeds were, on average, two times higher than recommended limits. This has obviously sparked fears that cases of skin cancer could rise if stricter controls are not put in place. Yinka Ebo, from Cancer Research UK, said: “Research has already shown that using sunbeds for the first time before the age of 35 increases the risk of the skin cancer malignant melanoma by 87%. “Sunbeds are not going to do you any good - the best-case scenario is they will age and damage your skin. The worst-case scenario is a cancer diagnosis
and potentially death.” The research focused on 402 sunbeds across England between 2010 and 2011. It compared the risks of tanning on the equipment with sitting in hot sunshine - and found that the sunbed risk was twice as high. The British Association of Dermatologists echoed the concerns and warned that England

has the worst record on regulation across the UK, it called for proper regulation to cover safety of equipment and health warnings for clients. However, the Sunbed Association, which represents companies that manufacture and operate tanning stations, said the study findings were out of date.

No more Mackerel
W
E can’t eat Mackerel anymore, because there’s not enough of it to go around according to conservationists.
The oily fish has been championed as a healthy and ethical option but now, due to depleting stocks, it should now only be eaten occasionally and where possible from local sources, according to The Marine Conservation Society (MCS). The conservation group has removed mackerel from its “fish to eat” list, recommending herring and sardine as alternatives. The change in fortunes for the species is the result of overfishing of the stock and the subsequent suspension of the north east Atlantic stock’s Marine Stewardship Council certification, meaning it is no longer considered a sustainable fishery.
Page 42
MCS Fisheries Officer, Bernadette Clarke, says numbers of mackerel have increasingly been found further north west in the Atlantic. “The stock has moved into Icelandic and Faroese waters, probably following their prey of small fish, crustaceans and squid. As a result both countries have begun to fish more mackerel than
was previously agreed. The total catch is now far in excess of what has been scientifically recommended and previously agreed upon by all participating countries. Negotiations to introduce new catch allowances have so far failed to reach agreement.” “If people want to continue eating mackerel they should
ensure they buy it from as sustainable a source as possible. That means fish caught locally using traditional methods - including handlines, ringnets and drift nets - or from suppliers who are signatories to the principles of the Mackerel Industry Northern Sustainability Alliance,” says Bernadette Clarke. Another casualty of
the MCS Fish to Eat list is gurnard. Perhaps not the prettiest fish in the sea, gurnard has become a restaurant favourite in recent years, its sustainable virtues extolled by a number of celebrity chefs. However, Bernadette Clarke, says a lack of data on stock levels, scientific advice to reduce catches and concerns about the fisheries management has led the charity to move gurnard off its Fish to Eat list and on to its cautionary listing. One of the roles of the MCS Fish to Eat and Avoid lists, which can be found at www. fishonline.org, is to ensure currently healthy fisheries don’t become the next overfished problem. By changing its ratings in line with the latest ICES stock advice, MCS tries to ensure that popular species don’t drop to worryingly low levels. Despite the downgrading of mackerel and gurnard, there is some good
news for other species. Many herring stocks and coley can now be eaten with a clear conscience and Dover sole from the English Channel also appears on the Fish to Eat list. Whiting, from the Celtic Sea, appears on the list for the first time. Levels of long-standing fish shop favourite cod in the North Sea are still below recommended levels, but North Sea coley, otter trawled or seine netted dab, gillnetted Dover sole, haddock and lemon sole all appear on the MCS Fish to Eat list. A number of farmed species are new to the Fish to Eat List including organically farmed Arctic charr and Gilthead bream; sturgeon caviar and seabass from closed systems fish farming method; tilapia from Zimbabwe that’s Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certified and ASC certified Pangasius. The Fish to Eat List also includes farmed mussel, tiger prawn, Atlantic halibut and salmon, turbot and rainbow trout. Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified species on the Fish to Eat List include cockles from the Dee and Bury Inlet and Shetland brown crab. Bernadette Clarke says it’s vital that consumers, chefs and seafood buyers use MCS lists to make the right decision when it comes to buying fish. “As world population, fish consumption and reliance on fish imports from outside of the European Union increases, the importance of knowing what we are eating, as well as where and how it is caught is essential to allow consumers to make the most sustainable choice for the future of our fish.” Consumers can get the very latest sustainable seafood advice by logging on to www. fishonline.org where the latest Pocket Good Fish Guide can also be downloaded allowing shoppers to take the most up-to-date advice with them to the fish

Hotel world Oscars
T
ripAdvisor®, has unveiled the winners of its 2013 Travellers’ Choice® Hotels Awards.
The awards identify the most outstanding properties worldwide, in the categories of Top Hotels, Luxury, Bargain, Service, Small Hotels and B&Bs. Unlike any other hotel honours, TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice winners are based on millions of reviews and opinions covering more than 650,000 hotels collected in a single year from travellers around the world. The UK has serious cause to celebrate – with a £35 a night Welsh hotel crowned best in the world for service. Britain’s B&Bs reign supreme laying claim to four of the world’s top 10 B&Bs, and Yorkshire comes up trumps with winners in multiple categories including being home to the Top hotel in the UK and the eighth best bargain hotel in the world. “For the eleventh year running, these awards recognise the cream of the crop when it comes to hotels across the globe, according to those that really matter - travellers themselves,” commented TripAdvisor spokesperson, Emma
Shaw. “Yet again, Britain’s B&Bs continue to be celebrated as some of the very best in the world, and for a British hotel to beat over 650,000 others to be named number one in the world for service really is something to be proud of.” The UK has not always been renowned for world-class hospitality, but the Lauriston Court Hotel in Llandudno, North Wales has been crowned the number one hotel for service in the world. The hotel also scooped sixth place in the best bargain hotel in the world category. And with a stay at the Lauriston Court Hotel
costing from just £35 per night, it’s proof that great service doesn’t have to come with an eye-watering price tag. Carol-Lynn and Ian Robbins, owners of the Lauriston Court Hotel said, “We’re thrilled to be recognised as the world’s best hotel for service by TripAdvisor’s travellers. Providing our guests with the best service possible is so important to us, and so it’s heart-warming to be recognised by our guests for the work we do to make their stay special.” The B&B has long been considered a British institution and the results of
this year’s Travellers’ Choice Hotels Awards prove that the UK is still home to some of the finest B&Bs in the world. Britain lays claim to seven of the top 10 B&Bs in Europe and even takes second and third place in the best B&Bs in the world category. The UK’s number one Top Hotel is Harrogate’s Rudding Park which also celebrates fourth place in the world. Edinburgh property, The Chester Residence, takes the award for best Small Hotel in the UK. This new category recognises hotels with less than 30 rooms. With the 2012 Olympics and Jubilee
European airline food awards Pegasus Airlines, SAS and KLM have been rated as the best airlines in Europe for on-board food in Skyscanner’s annual European Airline Food Awards. Over 550 European travellers and bloggers took part as food critics in cheap flight specialist Skyscanner’s second annual study of the quality of on-board culinary offerings. In the low-cost airline category, Turkish airline Pegasus, which

operates flights from London to many destinations in Turkey, took the number one position. British airlines dominated the leader board, with Flybe in second place, Monarch in third, and easyJet in fourth place. Spanish airline Vueling also scored highly, taking the number five spot. In the short-haul category it was Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) that triumphed. Germany’s Lufthansa came in second place and last year’s winner Turkish Airlines took third place ahead of British Airways, whilst Russia’s Aeroflot also
ranked well, coming in fifth place. In the long-haul dining category, Dutch airline KLM claimed the number one position, followed by Aeroflot, SAS, Air France and BA. Overall, SAS, Aeroflot and British Airways performed well, each appearing in the top five for both their long and short haul meals. A Skyscanner survey of more than 1,500 international travellers also revealed that 54% of air travellers believe the overall quality of airline food is currently good, while threequarters think that it is improving compared
with previous years. In fact, airline food now appears to be so good that 43% admitted to being envious of their neighbour’s choice of meal. Skyscanner’s Victoria Bailie commented, “Airline food used to have a reputation for being bland, but the quality of in-flight meals has improved massively as airlines place greater importance on serving good food at altitude. The majority of airlines have now realised that the quality of the meals does play an important part in airline choice and can sway regular flyers to travel with them.”

Octavia sets sights high
T
HE thirdgeneration Skoda Octavia is heading for the top 10 global best-sellers, according to the Czech manufacturer.
And that’s good enough for me. Anyone who’s ever talked cars with me will know of my love of Skoda machines, and this has always been a popular family hatch. The all-new version, designed to appeal to car buyers everywhere, gets full marks for practicality, offering oodles of interior space and some clever design touches. And all for a competitive price, even though Skoda is by no means the budget brand it once was. With the recently released Skoda Rapid now slotting into the range beneath the Octavia, this car - based on the longer-wheelbase version of the VW Group’s modular MQB platform - has grown in size to accommodate its new sibling in Skoda’s product range.
THE new Lexus IS made its world premiere at the Detroit Car Show last week, and what an impression it made! This model has been around since 1999, but it has never received such a complete redesign inside and out as this third-generation offering, which goes on sale in June from around £28,000. The previous version failed to impress those who generally drive BMW’s 3 Series, the Audi A4 or the Mercedes C-Classes, which are tailor-made for budding executives. But this IS will almost certainly make up for that disappointment. Unfortunately, there
Compared with the outgoing model, the new Octavia is 9cm longer, 4.5cm wider and has a wheelbase which is 10.8cm longer. Skoda are proud that their models often blur the car class boundaries, and the Octavia is no exception, boasting far more space than, say, a Ford Mondeo. Despite its growth, however, Skoda maintain the Octavia’s key rivals are still the VW Golf, Vauxhall Astra and Ford Focus. But it is not hard to imagine the keenly-priced, well-equipped Octavia turning the heads of car buyers looking at Mondeo-class vehicles. One drawback is that the Octavia 1.8 TSI DSG SE Plus, petrol variant won’t be coming to Britain when the model hits the showrooms in March. Instead, there will be two smaller petrols (a 1.2 TSI and 1.4 TSI), and a brace of diesels. The 1.6 TDI is likely to be popular seller, but the oil-burning rangetopping, Octavia 2.0 TDI, equipped with the DSG dual-clutch automatic gearbox and in the top Elegance
trim, will surely turn heads. Skoda has actually endowed their latest Octavia with a precise, technical design, eschewing curves for sharp angles and taut-looking body surfaces. It is appealing and modern, although lacking a little character against the previous generations. But the way Skoda’s designers have succeeded in masking the car’s vast interior dimensions from the outside is impressive. That’s hammered home when you lift the rear hatch and survey the continent-size storage space within.
And it’s not a smokeand-mirrors trick either, where useable boot space is much smaller than the manufacturer’s claims either. No, the boot will accommodate most objects, with a massive hatch opening and a loading sill at a comfortable height. Rear passengers also feel the benefit of that elongated wheelbase. Knee room to the back of the front seats has increased by 4.7cm to 7.3cm. Headroom has gone up, too, while up front it’s a similar story, with occupants getting
more space in every dimension. And behind the wheel, the cockpit lay-out is clear and the controls feel solid and well-designed. The 2.0 turbo-diesel engine is already a proven product across the Volkswagen range, and with 236lb ft on tap, it provides plenty of flexible shove. The 1.6 TDI would be the choice for those with a keen eye on fuel economy, emissions and price, but the 2.0 turbodiesel will attract the family man because he space and size of the engine. A six-speed dualclutch automatic or

will be no turbo-diesel version when the range goes on sale in the summer, but there will be a full hybrid model in the shape of the 300h model. This will be an eyeopener for companies

because Lexus say it will produce emissions of less than 1q00g/km, and an average fuel economy of 65mpg It is clearly inspired by the LF-CC concept, which was shown at the Paris Motor Show last
year, and features the new Lexus spindle front grille. This has become a design hallmark which adorns all new Lexus models, flanked by a pair of aggressive headlights.
The lamp design is distinctive, as the arrow-shaped daytime running light looks as though it is part of the main headlight cluster, but is actually a separate unit. In profile, this IS is considerably more dramatic than its predecessor, with the cabin pushed back, relative to where it is now. Combined with the sweeping crease which runs up from the sill into the taillights, this makes the car look so much more dynamic. Inside, the Lexus
the alternative (and cheaper) six-speed manual option will be a matter of personal preference. The steering is light, but has sufficient feedback to make this an all-round comfortable drive that demands little of the driver but offers little in the way of thrills either. Draw up a list of attributes your new car purchase and there will be a compelling argument for the Octavia. Even the £23,240 price tag attached to the range-topping 2.0 TDI DSG Elegance seems reasonable. And the fact that the cost drops by more than three grand if you don’t opt for some of the extras makes it fantastic value for money. Octavia 2.0 TDI DSG Elegance Price: £23,240 0-62mph: 8.6sec Top speed: 133mph Economy: 62.7mpg CO2: 119g/km Kerb weight: 1350kg Engine type, turbodiesel Power: 148bhp at 3500-4000rpm Torque: 236lb ft at 17503000rpm Gearbox: 6-spd dualclutch automatic. IS features similar design themes to the smaller CT 200h, including a horizontal bar incorporating the heater vents running across the dash, a wide centre console and a sports steering wheel. It also gets Lexus’ partdigital, part-analogue dials, like the LFA supercar. Push a menu button and the central speedometer slides to the right, revealing the selected menu in a small TFT screen. With increased interior comfort and boot space, the IS has the largest legroom in its class. The new range will include an IS 250 IS and the hybrid 300h.

Inn The Pink B are dazzling T HIS week saw all the teams take a break from league action, as the first round of the Tenerife Pool Tables Cup took place. The draw threw up plenty of potential for giant-killing, with several First Division sides pitted against Second Division opposition. There will have been a few nervous teams at the start of the evening, but it seems that these soon settled, with the majority of the First Division teams coming through. Two lower division teams did make it, though. Inn The Pink B

put in a great away performance against The Peacocks, and Exiles A comfortably dispatched Terrace Bar B, racing into a 6-0 lead. Terrace Bar rallied briefly and snatched three frames back, but Tel held his nerve
against Ritchie to clinch the frame which sent the Costa del Silencio boys into the second round. The number 13 did not prove unlucky for Terrace Bar A, because despite going 2-0 down, they won six on the
bounce to take control against Bar 13, eventually seeing the game out in the 10th frame. Gaffers A cruised through their match, continuing their seasonlong unbeaten streak, and Dreamers saw off Palms Bar B, with Tommy returning to form just in time for the Scotland encounter, winning his three games. First Division Phoenix Knights and Toscales A also posted comfortable victories. In the other all-First-Division tie, Inn The Pink A raced into an early 3-1 lead against Tenerife Hammers C, from which the claret-and-blue boys never recovered, the match finishing 7-5. Next Door Bar hosted Hoppy’s Bar in an allSecond-Division clash.
But the current league leaders were too strong for Hoppy’s, with Steve H and Craig winning three matches apiece. James Place came up against Bluebell B and were made to work hard for their 7-5 success, James winning his three games. And in a top-table Second Division clash, Treehouse A saw off Ryan’s Bar to ensure a place in the second round. The next round of the Tenerife Pool Tables Cup takes place on Tuesday, 12th February, the draw to be made shortly. All first-round losing teams will now be entered into The Plate competition, giving them a second chance to win silverware.

Emeralds lunging to title?
T
HE destination of the division 2 title still remains a mystery after the latest round of league matches.
It looks set to go right down to the wire, but what we do know is that Bar 180 C and Emerald Lounge are promoted, while Chipeque are almost there. But it was the Emeralds who made a statement of intent with a whitewash victory over the Playgirls! Bar 180 C did their bit and won at Barracuda Hunters, while Chipeque recorded the same 6-2 scoreline at home to Amistad 2. Emerald Lounge have the toughest run-in as they face Chipeque next

Elsewhere, Trap Door enjoyed a last-leg win at Gaffers B, La Cana repeated that at La Central B and Phoenix Flames finished all-square The Rebels, their local rivals. League 2 trail-blazers Palms Sports Bar A still retain their perfect record at the top. They will be crowned champions next week if they win and the Naturals lose. Both teams are already guaranteed promotion. singles match against yours truly, he said he was playing against two players: me and God! Some divine inspiration led me to hit a few high scores, including a 150, with treble 20, treble 18 and treble 12. Any treble is a good one I say, Mark! And he still beat me 3-1 anyway! A close match all the way, ended with the Target boys taking the trebles leg for a share of the spoils. Hallelujah! Tonight, (Friday) will see the quarter-finals of the John Lowe team handicap trophy and plate competitions.

Petanque’s very much says battling Bernard
RECORD 120 members turned out for the Los Cristianos-based Petanque Club’s first monthly competition of the year. It was a round-robin format and all players had three matches. After three hours of intense rivalry, the eventual winner emerged - Bernard Jugie (pictured), a visitor from the Ten Bel Petanque Club, who received a cup and bottle of grappa. Runner-up was Gerard Knorst, with Leon Collard finishing third.
