Payback time for flight delays! A DELAYED flight from Tenerife to the UK is set to cost European airlines a fortune. It means that angry airline passengers, hit by long flight delays, will now be able to claim compensation.
But only if the circumstances comply with a landmark European Court of Justice ruling. It was brought in last October, and it persuaded a Stoke-onTrent man to appeal after his initial claim against Thomas Cook was turned down. The European Court, the highest court for interpreting and enforcing EU laws, ruled that airlines would have to pay compensation for delays of three hours or more, unless there were factors beyond their control. And on Monday, retired teacher Jeff Halsall became one of the first UK passengers to be awarded damages from a tour operator. He successfully sued the company for the £680 air fare at Hanley County Court following a 22-hour delay for his and his wife’s return flight home from Tenerife to East Midlands airport in October 2009. Mr Halsall was also awarded £270 court

ITUR, the International Tourism Trade Fair, is being held in Madrid for the 33rd year. It runs until the 3rd of February. It’s a global meeting point for tourist professionals. FITUR continues to develop its popularity by creating various new forums designed to boost trade activity and business within the tourism industry. One such initiative for this year is wine-based tourism. A segment of considerable growth potential, it has thus been incorporated as a new initiative amongst
costs and £9.50 for petrol and parking expenses. District Judge Peter Rank told the court: “This must have been very upsetting for Mr and Mrs Halsall. It was a most unpleasant experience and it must have been very frustrating.” The decision could pave the way for thousands upon thousands of claims from tourists, provided they have faced flight delays of more than three hours. Mr Halsall’s initial claim was rejected by a judge because Thomas Cook said the delay was down to “exceptional circumstance” beyond its control. But Mr Halsall, from Kidsgrove, appealed against the decision after learning of the new
European legislation, which allows people to claim between £200 and £480 compensation for delays of over three hours in EU countries. Under those new rules, passengers can make a successful compensation claim if the airline is at fault for the delay. But only if the flights are within the EU, or the airline is based in the EU. It means that airline companies can still deny pay-outs when delays are outside their control - during bad weather, strikes or power cuts, for example. And compensation currently depends on the length of the flight and not the ticket cost. The EU are currently reviewing this. The ruling also means that travellers will

of considerable architectural appeal and different activities revolving around the world of wine and winemaking, thus combining the most exclusive tourism with winemaking culture and traditions. As part of another new initiative this year, the companies and bodies
Thomas Cook said it had offered Halsall more money than the figure eventually awarded by the court. A company spokesman told the Daily Mail: “We appreciate how frustrating flight delays can be, and we’ve reiterated our apology to Mr Halsall for the lengthy wait he and his wife experienced. “We always look at claims such as this fairly, and make every effort
to resolve complaints without the need for a court hearing.” A delighted Mr Halsall said: “Our claim has been going on for years and we are just glad it is finally sorted. “There were hundreds of passengers on our flight, and most of those people won’t know that they have the right to make this claim.” He added: “It doesn’t matter how much people pay for their flight, everyone is entitled to this. Airlines won’t tell people of their rights because they don’t want to pay out. “People probably think they have to go to court to do this, but they don’t! All they need to do is write to their airline.” ABTA told the Canarian Weekly that the EU regulation EU 261, introduced in 2006, gave airlines guidelines concerning delayed or cancelled flights. Before those guidelines, it was made clear that a delayed flight would not entitle passengers to monetary compensation but only food, drinks, hotel, etc. Only in some circumstances would a person have been entitled to compensation if the flight were cancelled. But there was an about-turn during a 2012 court case in Germany, when a judge interpreted the EU ruling to apply to delays as well. That opened the
door for Mr Halsall to proceed again with his claim against Thomas Cook. Also this week, the European Court of Justice ruled that Irish budget airline Ryanair flouted EU law by refusing to pay out cash to a customer left stranded by the Icelandic volcanic ash cloud three years ago. Denise McDonagh, from Ireland, should have flown back to Dublin from Faro on 17th April, 2010. But she was trapped in Portugal for a week because her flight was cancelled after the eruption closed down much of European airspace for nine days. She ran up hotel, meal and refreshment bills of 1,130 euro (£940), and submitted them to the airline on her return to Ireland. But the company refused to reimburse her, claiming the consequences of the eruption were so unexpected that they could not count as “extraordinary circumstances”. Ms McDonagh pursued her claim through the Irish courts, which then sent the case to the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg, Last March, Advocate General Yves Bot ruled in her favour, and that has now been upheld by the court, whose judges have ordered Ryanair to cover the costs she incurred.
taking part at FITUR will be able to market and sell their products on the days on which the trade fair opens to the general public (Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd February 2013). It enables visitors to the show to take advantage of a series of exclusive offers, promotions and discounts, whilst discovering the most attractive destinations and most suggestive ideas for their next holiday. The Canary Islands has invested 680,000 euros in the FITUR promotion of which just one part is a 1,827 metre stand (this is a 13% cut
compared to last year’s event). One of the key messages to come out of FITUR is that our resident discount will remain, the Ministry of Transport stressed, “under no circumstances will we alter or modify the rights of all citizens of the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Ceuta and Melilla “. During the event the delegates are taking the opportunity to hold a number of meetings with tour ops and airlines looking to improve connectivity and rates. Canarian President, Rivero is hoping for
more air connections and a reduction in ticket prices between the islands and the mainland. Amongst Tenerife’s municipalities taking part Arona is promoting itself through a 3d Film entitled ‘Arona, dive into a sea of sensations’ highlighting the wealth of attractions within the area. And, Rafael Dolado, Adeje Tourism Councillor said that Adeje is projecting the themes of Costa Adeje with, “a new range of accommodation, amenities, family tourism, luxury, tourist villages and tourist sports, adventure and shopping experiences.”

Flu epidemic hits mainland
A FLU epidemic is sweeping across Spain, especially in the northern areas of Catalunya, Aragón, Basque Country, Asturias and La Rioja. Flu vaccinations are available from the Health Service for those who qualify for assistance and those who fit the “high risk” profile considered for the condition. Anyone over 65, irrespective of his or her general state of health, should be inoculated, and some younger people with health conditions may also be eligible.
Pensioners’ drug-cost rise
PRESCRIPTION contributions may well increase again today by as much as 1.7%, in line with inflation. But pensioners are shielded to a large extent. Those with an income of less than 18,000 euros a year will face an average of just 14 cents extra, on top of the current eight-euro limit. And those whose income exceeds an annual 18,000 euros will see their existing 18-euro limit increase by 32 cents only. The group mostly affected by the rise will be those with chronic, ongoing conditions, and the elderly, since they consume the most medication.
Couple in cliff drama
THE Emergency services were alerted by passers-by on Tuesday at 5.10pm that two people were stranded on the Los Gigantes cliffs.
The German couple were a 27-year-old man and a woman aged 25, but the rescue was aborted through security concerns - the area is very steep and the light was failing. But they were air-dropped supplies - shelter materials, food and telephone on the cliff - as they prepared to spend the night there. Firefighters and a helicopter eventually rescued the pair on Wednesday morning. They were taken to the helipad in Playa la Arena, but declined hospital treatment after their ordeal.

Hey big spenders! Canary tourists splashing the cash
C
ANARY Island holidaymakers spent more money than in any region in Spain bar Catalunya last year, in what proved to be a record spree by visitors.
In all, they parted with 55.6 billion euros, according to research by the Ministry of Tourism, beating the previous year’s record by 5.7%. Records have been kept for just eight years, but despite their spending power, last year’s tourist numbers were only the third highest in that period. Although there are fewer of them and their holidays are getting shorter now an average of nine nights per person - they are splashing the cash, with
an average of 966 euros per holiday (up 2.8%), or 108 euros a day (up 6%). Hotel accommodation remains the most popular, but the figures for rented apartments and other types rose in take-up numbers more in 2012 than hotels did. As ever, the Brits spent the most money last year, forking out at 11.1 billion euros, which was 7.4% more than in 2011. The Germans were next highest with 9bn euros (up 5%), with the French at 5.19bn. billion. Takings from French tourists were actually 1.1% down from the 2011 figures, but they still accounted for 10% of the overall spending throughout Spanish regions. The Baltic States were not far behind, spending just under 5.1 billion, but the amount of money they spent in 2012 was an impressive
9.7% increase on the year before. Revenue from Italian tourists fell by 7.1%, but their 2.73 billion was still more than 5% of the total. Brits led the way for the most prolific tourists numbers nationally, followed by Scandinavians (Norwegians, Swedes, Danes and Finns), Germans and Russians. But the latter proved not to be big spenders. That situation should change, with plans to offer automatic residence rights to any Russian citizens who buy property costing 160,000 euros or more. That follows an unprecedented interest from Russians wanting luxury holiday homes along the Spanish coast. Curiously, fewer Brits and Italians travelled to Spain in 2012, but there were more Scandinavians, French and
Germans. Overall, as far as big spending was concerned, Catalunya and the Canaries were followed by the Balearic Islands, Andalucía and Madrid, who all emptied their pockets except for Spain’s capital city, The Comunidad Valenciana was in sixth place out of Spain’s 17 federal regions, following a sharp 9.7% rise in cash from 2011. Murcia was in 10th place despite a 1% drop, falling behind the central and northern regions of Galicia, the Basque Country and Castilla y León, but ahead of Aragón, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Navarra, La Rioja and Extremadura. And the survey found that tourists paid out the most money during their stays in the major cities and coastal areas.

Spanish gold
T
HE wealth of strawberries that are grown in the mainland are referred to as ‘Spanish gold’, but this year the growing season has suffered a bad start through inclement weather.
Pedro Paniagua, manager of co-operative, Cobella explained “It started with some delay due to the weather conditions. Last year was drier, with more sunshine. Furthermore, this year’s planting was also delayed.” Storms and strong winds have recently hit Huelva, especially in the area of Lepe. “Around 30 hectares have been affected, with some severe damage to greenhouse structures and plastic covers,”
he explained in the Spanish press. The losses are huge, however, the short and medium term consequences “are something that depends on the market as a whole, on the law of supply and demand,” points out Paniagua. Meanwhile, it is worth noting that Huelva’s strawberries also compete with countries such as Morocco and Egypt, especially after the latest agreements signed with the EU. “Competition is stronger in the beginning of the campaign, as our production and theirs overlap,” he added. Cobella The Andalusian Cooperative Society Ntra. Sra. de la Bella, is located in the town of Lepe, in the Spanish province of Huelva. It was founded in 1967 as a result of the need of a group of growers to collaborate with the processing
and commercialisation of their products, which at the time were, among others, melons, watermelons, tomatoes, almonds and cereals. “Currently 255 associates are part of the firm. Above all, we produce strawberries (10,000 tonnes). Of other berries, we produce around 800 tonnes of raspberries, blackberries and blueberries. We also produce citrus, around 15,000 tonnes, and another 2,000 tonnes in plums and nectarines. We are part of Onubafruit, along with another 5 cooperatives in Huelva (Cartayfres, CoopHuelva, Freslucena, Bonafru and SAT Condado), and we commercialise 100% of our production under the brand Onubafruit,” explained Pedro Paniagua. Among the wide range of strawberry varieties produced and commercialised
with the Onubafruit brand are the Ventana, Splendor, Primoris, San Andreas, Fortuna, Benicia, Sabrina and Camarosa, shipped to export markets such as the UK, Germany and Switzerland mainly, as well as Italy, France or Spain to a lesser extent. Spain is the largest exporter of strawberries worldwide, with an industry worth more than 400m euros (£345m) a year, some 50,000 individuals are employed within the industry. Driving through the fruit-farming area close to the town of Lucena del Puerto in Huelva, the land is lush and green. Domes made out of white plastic sheets spread as far as the eye can see. Beneath them are strawberries. This region accounts for almost 90% of production in Spain.
MANY years ago, while studying journalism before the advent of the prolific electronic age, I read several a tome about the subject of news. Some of the information stuck. And, that’s why, on occasion here in Tenerife, I become very disillusioned with the articles I read in some publications, both in print and online. People often say: “You need to read between the lines.” But why? I expect what I read to be factually correct as much as it can be, and if a piece of information is in doubt, or cannot be proved, then it should be left out. This week, there has been a news story which is grounded in fact. However, the writer has then embellished it, adding her own opinion. As a result, she has turned it into an incorrect panic story. Again! Here in the South of the Island. The only reason I can think of as to the rationale behind this is the rise of celebrity and interest in sensationalised, reality TV programmes, thus wanting to make
a story into something it’s totally not. There is also a story this week on the front of a UK tabloid which states: “Families who have their holidays ruined by long flight delays will at last be able to claim compensation.” No, the sentence is technically incorrect; compensation is available to those travellers delayed for more than three hours, who must also comply with certain criteria. For example, you’re not going to receive compensation for things such as strikes and bad weather as these are outside the control of the airlines. So perhaps the moral is not to believe everything that you read. Moving on, if you have never seen the Santa Cruz Carnival in the Island’s capital, then it is definitely worth a trip up North. The events are now taking place thick and fast, and there’s programme of activities on the carnival’s website www.carnavaltenerife.es/agenda-carnaval. Enjoy. Until next week…
Spanish economy shrinks THE latest estimated figures show that Spain’s gross domestic product (GDP) has reduced by 0.7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012. The gross domestic product (GDP) is one the primary indicators used to gauge the health of a country’s economy. It represents the total value of all goods and services produced over
a specific time period. The figures were worse than expected and it means that Spain has now suffered six straight quarters of negative growth, 30 straight months. In total the Spanish economy contracted by 1.37 percent in 2012 and year-on-year the GDP has contracted for five quarters. Austerity measures

and increasing unemployment has forced households to slash their spending even more. The National Statistics Institute (NSI) said the latest GDP estimate would be finalised on February 28th when the official figure is released. Overall, Spain’s unemployment rate has risen to its highest level since measurements
began in the 1970s, as a prolonged recession and deep spending cuts have left almost six million people out of work at the end of last year. In addition sales during the important Christmas period in December fell by 10.7% from the same period last year, compared with November’s 7.8% drop, the National Statistics Institute said.

O R O PARQUE’S two female Galapagos turtles (Geochelone nigra) have laid eggs for the first time, which is a milestone for the park.
It is an important achievement environmentally because they are a long-living species, but are vulnerable, with delayed reproduction in zoos as well as in the wild. So the first eggs laid, although not fertile, indicate they will soon reproduce. The Loro Parque fe-
males, who are over 20 years old, live together with Tom, He is a male of about 50 with whom they share an open exhibition, which has been specially created for them, and each
animal has its own cave. The Galapagos are the largest turtles on the planet and they can weigh up to 250 kilos. They used to inhabit every continent, except Australia and Antarctica, and are now virtu-
ally extinct on the mainland. They live only on the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador, where there are populations in various localities. Turtles usually spawn their eggs on the ground and plug up the holes for incubation. So the keepers and veterinarian team monitor the animals carefully, with frequent ultrasounds, to observe this reproductive stage. The Galapagos turtle is a threatened species and listed as rare as a result of the hunting, destruction of their hábitat and the introduction of animals competing with them for food.
Health chiefs ditch three medicines
SPANISH health authorities have withdrawn three types of medication from the market. The Spanish Medication and Healthcare Products Agency (AEMPS) has confirmed that the antiblood clotting drug Sintrom, the anti-inflammatory Junifen (a syrup, of which the main ingredient is Ibuprofen) and Acuvue (daily-use contact lenses), have all been removed from sale.
However, not all varieties of these drugs have been taken off the shelves. Sintrom, manufactured by Novartis, batch number T5484, which contains boxes of 20 4mg pills each, has been withdrawn because of “a foreign object” detected in one of the tablets. It has gone back to the laboratory for testing. Junifen, marketed by Reckitt Benckiser Healthcare, has seen batch G07 - syrup of
40mgs per millilitre withdrawn because of “results outside normal specifications”. It has been returned to the laboratory for a “recount of total yeast and fungus”, or analysis of the bacteria which is the active ingredient of the drug. And Acuvue’s 1-Day Moist (Etafilcon A), and Acuvue Advance with Hydroclear (Galyfilcon A) have been removed as a limited number of individual packs of contact lens-
es were found to have been incorrectly sealed. The solution inside the pack could have leaked out and made the lenses less sterile, potentially causing eye infections. Spain’s Ministry of Health has instructed pharmacies and opticians to stop selling these three products immediately - and for patients to stop using them. They should go to their doctor or optician if any adverse effects are felt.

Olives – a bitter tale SPAIN is the largest producer of olive oil in the world. Olive farmers in Andalucia believe that this year their crop of olives will be reduced by as much as 80%.
The reason being the area where the majority of olives are grown – Jaen, in southern Spain has received little rain. As a result it’s thought that the price of olives will increase due to the shortage.
Jaen produces half of Spain’s total olive crop. “The rain was noticeable for its absence,” says Diego Galindo, vicepresident of the San Julian Olive Oil Cooperative in Jaen. This year, Spain will have only enough production to cover its internal consumption. The potential shortage follows a bumper crop for the previous three years so forecasters say that the industry should be able to survive.

I am dyslexic, and I’m not embarrassed to be “labelled” as one because it’s not something to be ashamed of. When I was young I didn’t like to read and was always quite timid when asked to read aloud. I was anxious of saying something wrong and so I’d find ways to get out of reading to my teacher. I’d pretend to feel ill or say I’d forgotten my book, I always thought I just didn’t enjoy books. I got good grades at
Page 8
I would get told by teachers that I needed to try harder. They guessed I just hadn’t tried hard enough to learn them and that’s why I never did as well as the others. By the time I got to secondary school, my main interest was in music and sports. At the age of 11, I played two instruments and did numerous sports when not in school. I got good grades at school but began to get nervous about
work that I had been asked for frequently, and teachers assumed I just didn’t bother doing it. During class, I started having difficulty making notes in class and couldn’t always remember what I’d been told. Soon after, I got labelled by the teachers as a “troublemaker” or a “day-dreamer” and told that I didn’t listen, even though I knew I was. Bit by bit, I stopped trying, because what was the point when
was to create a tune for it and sing it. I didn’t realise at the time what a huge help music was for me. It helped me a lot when learning and I used this revision tactic a lot afterwards. When I got my exam results in June 2009, I wasn’t too pleased with the grades I got. I remember crying because I’d only gotten a B for Music and English. But when my mum pointed out I’d gotten an A for Maths I waved it off. I didn’t want an A for that. Looking back, I realise how proud I should have been for an A in Maths, I am now, but at the time I just kept thinking how I’d tried harder in other subjects ,so why hadn’t I gotten an A in them? I chose my A Levels in 2009, which were Music, English Literature, Media Studies and History. However, after struggling for two months doing History I realised I had no idea what I’d even been learning about and quickly dropped the subject. The other three were hard work anyway and I would have struggled doing all four. My main struggle that year was with English Literature. I enjoyed working through poetry, plays and prose but found it hard to remember quotes. When I received my results, I got a B for Media, a B for Music and a D for English Lit. That summer, aged 17 in 2010, my mum decided I needed to be tested for dyslexia. A lot of my dad’s side of the family had it so it was pretty normal to me. Three of my cousins all have dyslexia and they all became teachers, so I wasn’t too worried if I
psychologist later that day, he went through my results. I was dyslexic. He then had to explain how it affected me because different dyslexics are affected in different ways. He said that for my age, my IQ was above average and in the top percentage for my age. However, my short-term memory was in the bottom 5% for my age group. I wasn’t surprised because now all my issues at school made perfect sense. It wasn’t that I wasn’t listening. I just didn’t always remember straight away. My second year of A Levels was worse, and even though I was diagnosed, the school did not help me at all. If anything, some teachers used my dyslexia to tease me in front of class. For example, in one lesson we were asked to take notes from a discussion that the class (10 all together) were having. People were talking over each other and giving me no time to write anything, I got flustered, as I knew I would, and started coping from the girl next to me. Of course, my teacher noticed and asked in a patronising tone: “Oh sorry, is this too hard for you?” And she began speaking slowly to me to make everyone laugh. That particular teacher throughout the year enjoyed using my dyslexia against me, but when I explained everything to my head teacher, nothing was done. I was simply called a liar and a troublemaker, and, seeing as teachers stick together, I became quite disliked in the staff room. I left school with
put in place and I had gotten help from anyone I asked. I have a note-taker who takes my notes in lectures so that I can concentrate on listening and taking in as much as I can. I also have a personal tutor, who I meet with every week for two hours. She checks my essays, helps me plan work, teaches me new strategies to cope with work and if I need anything, she is just a phone call away. The university also helped to get me some equipment for studying, including a new Apple MacBook, a printer, scanner and much more. They have really helped me to ensure I get the best possible grades I can. The differences between my secondary school and my university are vast. At school, they didn’t want to help me. As long as they were getting an average of good grades throughout the year group, they seemed to not care about ignoring the needs of the few of us that needed the help. However, at university my needs have always been put first and they have helped me no matter what the problem. I am enjoying my course, getting good grades and hope to finish with a good degree. In the future, I am thinking about becoming a teacher. I want to specialise in music and special needs. This is because it means a lot to me. I enjoy music and wouldn’t want any children not to get the support they deserve at school.

HE latest statistics from the 2011 Census, published this week, provide a new level of geographical detail about the characteristics of the population of England and Wales.
The 2011 Census was the first to ask how well the population could speak English when this was not their main language. English IS the main language for 92 per cent (50 million) of residents aged 3 and over. (For residents in Wales their main language could be either English or Welsh.) The remaining 8 per cent (4 million) had a different main language, but most were proficient in speaking English. Of the 4 million residents aged 3 and over with a main language other than English, 1.7 million could speak English
Page 10
very well, 1.6 million could speak English well, and 726,000 could speak English but not well. The remaining 138,000 could not speak English at all. The census reveals that there were 49 languages used as a main language
(by groups of more than 15,000 people). The top 20 included 5 South Asian languages and 9 European. Of the top 5 languages 3 were South Asian. Not all languages are spoken. A small number of people (22,000) used sign language, 15,000 of
whom used British sign language. One main highlight of the report was that the second most reported main language is Polish (1 per cent, 546,000). 22 per cent (1.7 million) of London residents used a main language other than English.
97 per cent (2.9 million) of residents in Wales reported English or Welsh as their main language. Nearly one fifth (19 per cent, 562,000) of residents aged 3 and over in Wales reported that they could speak Welsh.
Top 10 languages: English Polish Panjabi Urdu Bengali Gujarati Arabic French Chinese Portuguese.
Guilty of supplying a firearm
KEVIN HutchinsonFoster, 30, was convicted at the Old Bailey of supplying a firearm to Mr Mark Duggan after a retrial; it was his (Duggan) fatal shooting by police that sparked the London riots in 2011. The Old Bailey heard that Mr Duggan collected the BBM Bruni Model 92 handgun just 15 minutes before he was shot dead on the 4th August 2011. The 29-year-old’s death in Tottenham, north London, led to
riots that swept across London and other English towns and cities that summer.
H u t c h i n s o n - Fo s t e r had denied a charge of “selling or transferring a prohibited firearm”
to Mr Duggan between 28th July and 5th August 2011. A jury failed to reach a verdict after
a trial last year. But at the retrial, a jury of seven women and five men convicted him by majority verdict. During both trials armed officers, who gave evidence anonymously, described how they opened fire on Mr Duggan because they saw him get out of a taxi holding a loaded gun. The Police Officer who shot Mr Duggan twice - once in the chest and once in the arm - said he fired because he thought he was going to shoot him and his colleagues.

TV’s Kyle on the mend
J
EREMY KYLE, who hosts a confrontational morning TV chat show, is recuperating abroad after testicular cancer treatment.
He has undergone chemotherapy following the discovery of a growth late last year. The 47-year-old presenter has taken a break from recording his ITV programme to recover, but he should return to work next week to film new shows. His programme’s Facebook page had a statement saying: “After an operation and chemotherapy treatment, I’m pleased to say he’s now on the
mend. “It’s been a really tough couple of months for him and his family, but he wanted to let you all know that he appreciates your continuing support. “Jeremy will be back at work next week to start filming new shows, which you’ll see on TV very soon.” An ITV spokeswoman said: “We wish Jeremy well and are pleased that he is making such good progress.” He has hosted the Jeremy Kyle Show for
7½ years, highlighting dysfunctional relationships, but critics have slammed it for glorifying “broken Britain”. The show was nominated in last week’s National Television Awards for the Best Daytime TV Show accolade, but it missed out to BBC’s This Morning. The acerbic Kyle was a salesman before moving into broadcasting by hosting programmes in local radio. He went on to present
his Virgin Confessions show on Virgin Radio before landing his television slot after Trisha Goddard left her daytime ITV series for Channel 5. Kyle has also launched his programme in the US and has fronted other shows for ITV. In his autobiography, I’m Only Being Honest, the twice-married presenter talked about how he suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Prince’s new Tube adventure PRINCE CHARLES broke the habit of half a lifetime by joining commuters on a Tube train for the first time in 33 years. Puzzled passengers saw the future King and the Duchess of Cornwall swipe their commemorative Oyster cards at Farringdon Station. The royal couple, there to highlight the 150th

Having arrived in Farringdon by royal limousine, Charles and Camilla were presented with their Oyster cards, costing them £10 each. Yet they would have qualified for a Freedom Pass for the over-60s. While Camilla is thought to have used the London Underground in the past, the Prince last travelled on the Tube in 1979,
when he opened the first stage of the Jubilee line. The Duchess of Cornwall is a fan of Harry Potter, so upon arrival at King’s Cross, she and the Prince were taken to Platform 9¾. That’s where the Hogwarts Express departs in the Harry Potter book, and the Duchess was also presented with an £8 souvenir photo.

Around the world in four years, without ever taking an aircraft!
A
N off-thewall Liverpudlian adventurer is on the verge of entering the Guinness Book of Records for visiting every country in the world - without even flying! In January 2009, 33-year-old Graham Hughes began his decade-long dream to visit all 193 UNrecognised nations and, at the same time, raise money for Water Aid, an international organisation formed to transform lives in the world’s poorest countries. He has since completed journeys to all the hot spots in the world on his Odyssey Expedition, including Iraq, Afghanistan and North Korea. And he has visited
Page 12
every sovereign nation, including Vatican City, Palestine, Taiwan, Western Sahara and Kosovo, which do not have seats at the UN. For all that, Guinness World Records ruled that his feat did not stand as he had entered Russia without a valid visa. Graham actually waded across the River Narva from Estonia. So he is now visiting Russia again in the hope of completing his challenge officially, travelling 25 hours by train from London Victoria to Gdansk in Poland before taking a bus across the border. When he began his mammoth task, Guinness set rules for the record: he couldn’t use private transport over large distances, he was not allowed to hitch-hike anywhere, and he was forbidden from driving. So Graham, also a filmmaker, TV presenter and charity fund-raiser,
completed his journeys via a combination of train, taxi and cargo ship, and he has kept GPS (Global Positioning System) records from all his visits. He made the trips on a shoestring budget, spending less than £7,000 a year in the first two years and just under £3,000 after that. Along the way, he also had to take into account changing borders: South Sudan, for instance, became a nation in 2012, and Graham travelled there in November by public
transport. His longest journey was a 32-day round trip from Australia to Nauru, the world’s smallest republic, which is north of the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific Ocean, in the Micronesia archipelago. Well worth the journey,” was Graham’s verdict, as was his trip to Palau, in the North Pacific, which he describes as “an unspoilt tropical paradise with amazing people”. But it was always fun and games for this intrepid explorer because his travels also
threw up some dangers. He even found himself imprisoned for six days on a visit to Congo, and was released thanks only to the intervention of the British consulate. Pakistan also gave him headaches because he was forbidden from leaving the port at Karachi because authorities said it would be too dangerous. But the most memorable time, he recalls, was the four days he spent on a leaky wooden canoe, crossing the open ocean from Senegal to Cape Verde. During his journey,
Graham filmed a TV show, and raised money for the Water Aid charity. Graham says simply: On 26th November 2012, after almost four years on the road, I crossed the border into South Sudan - the newest country on Earth - and completed the first surface journey to every country in the world. “I crossed a staggering 201 international borders by foot, bus, taxi, train, ship or canoe - no planes, no helicopters and no hotair balloons. “Along the way, I shot and presented Graham’s World for the National Geographic Adventure TV channel, and raised funds for Water Aid.” He has recorded his remarkable experiences on his blog www. theodysseyexpedition. com/ - and it’s an entertaining read, well worth a few minutes of your time.

tricksters West End theatre- ‘Royal’ lose Aussie show land still booming A T HE Society Of London Theatre (SOLT) has announced plans for this year’s Olivier Awards, which will be screened on ITVI and on BBC Radio 2. The ceremony will take place at the Royal Opera House on 28th April 28, with actress Sheridan Smith hosting the event. Meanwhile, London’s West End ticket sales were up in 2012 for the ninth year running, despite a slight drop during the Olympics. Fears over the recession and the Games were relatively unfounded. Attendances increased to almost 14 million (up 0.56%) with box office sales, and setting a record of £530m (up 0.27%). London 2012, said SOLT, had had a
“dampening” effect, with sales down by some 9%, but it had not been as bad as Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and others had predicted. Society president Mark Rubinstein could not hide his delight with the results. “It is particularly astonishing that we are able to report increasing sales of over half-a-billion pounds for a year we always knew

would have exceptional challenges,” he said. “Against the background of a tough, economic climate, London theatre continues to buck the trend, offering dazzling, world-class entertainment. “It has audiences from home and abroad flocking to the West End to catch exciting new productions, as well as much-loved, long-
running favourites.” New productions such as Matilda The Musical, One Man, Two Guvnors, Top Hat and Sweeney Todd are all believed to have contributed to the increase. Plays also had a strong year with audiences up 9%, the most successful being Shakespeare’s Globe productions of Richard III and Twelfth Night at the Apollo Theatre.
U S TRALIA’S shamed radio show, which tricked a ward nurse into revealing details about the Duchess of Cambridge, has been dumped.
The Hot 30 programme on 2Day FM was taken off air after the death of nurse Jacintha Saldanha, who was found hanged at her home after forwarding the call. But Michael Christian and Mel Greig, the DJs who made the call, are still working for the station. They have been on leave since the December incident and a music-based show without a host DJ has replaced theirs. Rhys Holleran of 2Day Fm owner Southern Cross Austereo, said: “We look forward to Mel and MC returning to work when the time is right.”
The pregnant Duchess, Kate Middleton, was being treated at King Edward VII’s Hospital for an extreme form of morning sickness when Christian and Greig called, pretending to be members of the Royal Family. Mrs Saldanha answered the call and put them through to another nurse, who gave an update on the Duchess’s condition. Mrs Saldanha was found hanged three days later. The Australian media watchdog launched a formal inquiry last month to determine whether any broadcasting rules had been breached. The radio station also pledged to give at least 500,000 Australian dollars (£330,600) from its advertising profits to the family of Mrs Saldanha.

Fat tax on fizzy drinks?
F
IZZY drinks should be taxed at 20p a litre in this year’s Government Budget, say leading medical bodies. The recommendation, by food and farming charity Sustains is backed by more than 60 organisations, including the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, who are concerned about the sky-high levels of obesity in Britain. They maintain the levy would raise £1bn a year in duty to fund free fruit and meals in schools to improve children’s health. Naturally, the soft drinks industry believes raising taxation is unnecessary. The British Soft Drink Association (BSDA) says companies are already playing their part in the fight against obesity. Gavin Partington, BSDA’s director general said: “More than 60% of
soft drinks now contain no added sugar, and we have seen soft-drinks companies lead the way in committing to further, voluntary action as part of the Government’s Responsibility Deal calorie-reduction pledge.” He stressed that 10p from every 60p can of fizzy drink already went to the Government in tax and added: “Putting up taxes even further will put pressure on
people’s purses at a time when they can illafford it.” What is not generally known is that sugary foods and drinks can make us gain weight only if, overall, we eat more calories than we use for energy Sugary drinks are potentially hazardous because they do not fill us up, meaning we can easily consume too much. A 330-millilitre (half-
pint) sugary drink typically provides 35g (0.17oz), or nine lumps of sugar. The British Dietetic Association says some research suggests sugary drinks may be contributing to obesity in children. In the UK, one in four adults is classified as obese, and one-third of children are already obese or overweight before they finish primary school.
The BDA suggests that if you want to cut down, try switching to pure juice, diluted with fizzy water, diet fizzy drinks, milk, no-addedsugar squash or water. But Sustain says the tax is a simple measure to help save lives by reducing sugar in our diets and raising money to protect children’s health. Mike Rayner, from the department of public health at Oxford University and chairman of Sustain, said: “Just as we use fiscal measures to discourage drinking and smoking and help prevent people from dying early, there is now lots of evidence that the same approach would work for food. “This modest proposal goes some way towards making the price of food reflect its true costs to society. “Our obesity epidemic causes debilitating illness, life-threatening diseases and misery for millions of people. It is high time the Government did
something effective about this problem.” A Department of Health spokeswoman said: “Our primary responsibility is to help the nation to be healthier. We keep all international evidence under review, but we believe the voluntary action we have put in place is delivering results.” But Shadow Health Secretary Andy Burnham disagrees, saying it was plain that a voluntary approach was not working. “Labour is consulting on whether new limits on sugar, salt and fat content in food aimed at children would be a better way forward,” he said. “This would help parents protect their children from foods which contain excessive levels of sugar, salt and fat in a way that a tax wouldn’t.” Over the past 10 years, the consumption of soft drinks containing added sugar has fallen by 9%, while obesity has increased by 15%.
Toyota back in top gear JAPANESE car-maker Toyota has seen a dramatic increase in its fortunes over the past year. The company’s sales in 2011 were hit by natural disasters in Japan and Thailand, which hurt production at its factories. But after an exceptional 2012, it has regained its slot as the biggest vehicle-maker in the world. Toyota sold 9.75 million vehicles in 2012 which was up 22% from a year earlier. General Motors, which recorded the highest number in 2011, was a close second with 9.29 million vehicles sold. But Toyota and fellow Japanese carmakers affected in 2011 have enjoyed a steady improvement, regaining
Page 14
a share in key markets such as the US. Vivek Vaidya, an auto analyst with Frost & Sullivan, told the BBC: “The last two years have been very difficult for Toyota. ”Regaining the top slot would definitely be heartening for the firm, and is good news for its investors and shareholders.” He added: “We are likely to see profit margins rise, giving Toyota more cash in hand, and the ability to invest in developing new technologies” Toyota’s domestic rivals also reported record numbers of vehicle sales last year. Nissan sold 4.94 million vehicles globally - up almost 6% from the previous year - while Honda saw a jump of
19% from a year earlier, selling 3.82 million. Along with the natural disasters, Japanese carmakers have also been hit by a strong yen. A strong currency not only makes Japanese
goods more expensive to foreign buyers, but also hits firms’ profits when they repatriate their foreign earnings back home. This especially hurts companies such as Toyota, which rely
heavily on overseas sales. But Japanese carmakers have received a boost in the past few weeks as the yen has fallen against the US dollar. Toyota raised its
annual profit forecast in November, predicting a net profit of 780bn yen (£5.4bn) for the financial year to 31st March 2013 - an improvement on its earlier forecast of 760bn yen.
No Jubilee fireworks for Queen’s 60th anniversary
THE Queen plans to mark the 60th anniversary of her coronation on 4th June with a special service at Westminister Abbey. But don’t expect any huge, Jubilee-style celebrations. Instead, Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh and other members of the royal family, will also attend a lunch. In fact, the main highlights to commemorate this momentous occasion will be that Westminster Abbey service,
and a Coronation Festival in the gardens of Buckingham Palace between 11-14th July. The Abbey has also announced it will stage a series of events to celebrate the anniversary, including a Coronation Concert on 13th June and an exhibition featuring the coronation chair used by kings and queens since the 14th century. Some three million people lined the streets of London on 2nd June 1953 to see the Queen
travel in a golden state coach from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey. Prime ministers and heads of Commonwealth states were among the 8,000-strong congregation as the Queen took the coronation oath, 18 months after succeeding to the throne. Millions more watched around the world as the Queen was handed the four symbols of authority: the orb, the sceptre, the rod of mercy and the royal ring of sap-
phire and rubies. The Queen said in a radio broadcast at the time: “Throughout all my life and with all my heart, I shall strive to be worthy of your trust.” And no one can doubt that she has fulfilled that pledge. The Coronation Festival, which is open to the public, will cost £30 during the day and £90 in the evening. It will embrace 200 companies holding the Royal Warrant promoting their goods and services.

Sir Elton’s new baby takes a bow WELCOME to our world! Sir Elton John and his partner, David Furnish, have introduced their second son, Elijah, to the public. The baby was born on 11th January to the same surrogate mother who gave birth to their eldest son, Zachary, now two. Elijah weighed in at a healthy 8lb 4oz, and the family posed for their first photograph together for the cover of Hello! magazine. The 65-year-old rock star described his love for the two sons, saying: “Elijah completes our family in a most precious and perfect way. “I have learned that a parent’s capacity for love is endless. When another child is born, our depth of love just grows deeper and wider, so it was very emotional.” The surrogate mother’s identity is still a close-kept secret, but Sir Elton praised the woman who has provided the couple with their dream family.
two sons. “She is a wonderful, kind and loving woman, who we love like a sister,” said Sir Elton. “We have a very close bond with her and were in constant touch throughout the pregnancy, getting updates, seeing scans and sharing all the little details that make those nine months so exciting. “She has given us two amazing gifts and we, in turn, have a duty of care to her and are fiercely protective of her anonymity.” The boys are at least half-brothers as they share the same egg donor, but it has not been revealed who the donor is or which man is Elijah’s biological father.

Lock up your No compensation for man jailed home in Leeds wrongly for Jill Dando murder LEEDS has been named as having the postcode which features the most burglaries in Britain. It topped a list compiled by Comparison website MoneySupermarket. com, which analysed 3.49 million applications for home insurance quotes made from December 2011 to the end of last November. The LS13 Leeds postcode was followed by Bradford’s BD12, North Finchley, London (N12), Eccles, Manchester (M30) and Noak Hill in Romford, Essex (RM3). The website studied the number of users who said they had made a burglary claim f at their current address in the past two years. The number of claims made per 1,000 inquiries was then calculated for each area, to allow postcodes to be compared. Hannah Jones, from MoneySupermarket, said: “While there are clearly some areas of the country with a higher proportion of insurance claims for burglary than
Page 16
others, this doesn’t actually mean the area is ‘rife’ with crime. “Thieves often specifically target areas with wealthy residents, or quieter areas where there’s not a lot of passing foot traffic, where the rewards are potentially greater and the risk of being caught in the act may be lower.” She added: “Areas affected by higher rates of burglary insurance claims will see their premiums impacted increasing by a fifth on average. Higher-value properties could pay even more. “Insurers take a blanket approach to assessing postcode districts for home insurance premiums, rather than looking at insurance applications on a caseby-case basis. “So, although you may not have been a victim of burglary directly, you could be paying more for insurance if there are higher rates of burglary claims made within your postal area.”

A R R Y GEORGE, who spent eight years in prison after being wrongly convicted of murdering BBC TV presenter Jill Dando, has lost his bid to receive compensation. Two High Court judges ruled that he failed to meet the test which would entitle him to be recompensed for his lost years of freedom. Mr George, 52, cleared after a retrial, was bidding for £500,000 compensation following a landmark decision by the Supreme Court in May 2011. The judgement redefined the legal meaning of what amounted to a miscarriage of justice after debating when compensation should be awarded to wrongly-convicted people. Previously, compensation was awarded for a miscarriage of justice
only if a claimant could, effectively, prove that he or she were innocent. But the nine Supreme Court judges widened this by saying that if a person proved that no set of circumstances could possibly lead to a conviction, they could get compensation. High Court, judges Lord Justice Beatson and Mr Justice Irwin ruled that Mr George had failed this test. They said: “There was
indeed a case upon which a reasonable jury properly directed could have convicted the claimant of murder.” But Mr George said “They have decided I was not innocent enough.” Mr George’s lawyers had argued that the Justice Secretary’s decision to deny him the £½m damages was “flawed and contrary to natural justice”. They will seek to ap-
peal to the Supreme Court, which would be what is known as a “leapfrog” appeal. Crimewatch presenter Miss Dando, 37, was shot dead on the doorstep of her Fulham home in west London in April 1999. Mr George, convicted in 2001, was cleared at an Old Bailey retrial in 2008 after doubt was cast on the reliability of gunshot residue evidence.

Queen Bea set to step down C R O W N Prince Willem-Alexander will become Holland’s first king for over a century when his mother, Queen Beatrix, abdicates 30th April.
The Queen announced on national TV that she was stepping down after 33 years as head of state, confirming an end to the reign of one of Europe’s longestserving monarchs. The news is expected to bring an outpouring of emotion from the Dutch, most of whom adore their queen and refer to her as “Bea”. Beatrix said in a speech delivered from her Huis ten Bosch palace, just days before she was to turn 75: “Responsibility for our country must now lie in the hands of a new generation. “I am deeply grateful for the great faith you have shown in me in the many years that I could be your queen.”
Queen Bea’s role has largely been ceremonial, but she won many hearts by giving the monarchy a modern, hard-working image. Now, her 45-yearold son will take the reins from his mother, the oldest monarch in Dutch history. Observers believe she

has stayed on the throne for so long, partly out of her eagerness to hold the country together. Dutch society has seen years of unrest, linked to immigration and a move away from its traditional reputation as one of the world’s most tolerant nations. In her 2010 Christmas
Day speech, Beatrix made a heartfelt plea for unity, saying: “With each other, we all make up one society.” Beatrix, who has said that the best years of her life were as a mother before taking the throne in 1980, was also thought to be giving time for her son to enjoy fatherhood.
The future King Willem-Alexander has three young daughters with Argentine investment banker Maxima Zorreguieta. The queen has been widely respected for her unpretentious style, but it took Beatrix much of her reign to attain the popularity of her
late mother, Queen Juliana, who was more openly-loving toward her people. But in recent years, personal tragedies exposed a softer side to the queen and brought her closer to her sympathetic subjects. Her German husband, Claus, died in 2002. In another blow, a deranged loner tried to slam a car into an open-topped bus carrying members of the royal family as they celebrated the Queen’s Day national holiday in 2010, killing seven spectators. Then, in 2012, her second son, Prince Friso, was engulfed by an avalanche as he skied, plunging him into a coma from which he has yet to emerge. Beatrix went back to her busy, official schedule soon after the accident, but it spurred speculation again that she would step down. The Netherlands celebrates the 200th anniversary of its monarchy, the House of Orange, at the end of this year.

HE dog pictured is Rose, who was abandoned on the Los Cristianos seafront promenade last week, tied up with no water.
One of our long-term supporters, Andrea Silver, of nearby Studio 5 hair salon, was alerted and dashed to the scene. She untied the poor creature, who was weak and dehydrated. Shockingly, a sign had been placed by her side saying: “I’m alone on the street, can you help me, or take me with you please”. Andrea immediately took her to the salon, where she drank plenty of water. Andrea then called us, and Siobhan, who runs our San Eugenio shop, drove there with Alice Shaw from Poochies Pet Hotel within the hour. Poor Rose was taken straight to the vets and diagnosed as having a severe mouth infection. She is now staying with Siobhan while she has her treatment: strong antibiotics followed by some work on her teeth and gums when she is stronger.
S h e is around eight years old. Eventually, when she is much better, she will need a home to live out her days in happiness. She has an unregistered microchip, so it seems unlikely we will find her original owners. But if anyone recognises her, please get in touch with us. It is thought that one of the people who build the sand-sculptures left her with the sign by her side.
Maybe she was taken in by him at some point, then abandoned because of her illness, but we just don’t know. It is also upsetting that hundreds of people probably walked past her and did nothing. However, the important thing now is that she is safe and receiving treatment. Andrea has been making a collection to cover her medical costs, and we will keep you updated on her progress. Fun Dog Show On Saturday, 16th February, we will be having a Fun Dog Show on the car park of the
Xtreme Gym in Las Chafiras, from 2pm. As it’s Carnival Week, there is a category for Best Fancy Dress and a category for best disabled dog. There is also a barbecue, and a fun afternoon is on the cards. Check our Facebook page for the latest info, and to download the registration form to save time on the day. Registration is five euros, and there are lots of prizes to be won. General inquiries Sue Havenhand 629 388 102; Siobhan Fergusen 630 857 626
Support wanted for Myrna’s dogs MANY people will have heard of Myrna, or have had direct contact with her from her Office of Tourism in Arico Town Hall. For some she has been a “life-saver”, sorting out various problems. But what many people probably don’t know is that Myrna also saves dogs. Yes, real dogs! Over a number of years she has provided a home for unwanted dogs, in some cases abandoned or just dumped. She has a home with
some land near Arico and now looks after over 40 dogs and also some cats. They’ve all had veterinary inspections, are fed daily and are looked after really well. But all this is funded from her own pocket and, says Rodney Hart: “It’s too much!” That’s why he and a group of residents have formed an association, now officially registered as the charity Amigos de los Animales de Arico” (Friends of animals of
Arico). “We are asking for some people to donate small amounts, just to help support the cost of veterinary visits, dog food, cat food, blankets etc,” adds Rodney. This help could be with a one-off payment, or a Bankers Standing Order for 10 euros a month. The bank is CAJASIETE el PORIS: Account No: 3076 0270 17 2251645921 A/c name: AMIGOS de LOS ANIMALES de ARICO. Rodney, who will
audit the accounts, said: “Not one euro goes to people. This is being administered voluntarily, and all the money goes for the dogs and cats. This is why I am supporting it - what about you?” The group plan to provide regular news and updates for supporters in the future. Meanwhile, you can contact Gerado (Treasurer) on 922 166 167, Rodney (Auditor) on 922 164 364, and Henk on 922 160 995.

Burns Night is a Silencio sizzler
C
ATH’S Corner Restaurant attracted 32 people to its third annual Burns Supper last Friday. And the traditional Burns Night gathering, organised by owners Cath and Don to celebrate the life and works of Scotland’s iconic
poet Robert Burns, proved to be a superb evening in Costa del Silencio. Chairman Harry Fleming began the proceedings with the Address To The Haggis, followed by Margaret Bodker’s recital of The Selkirk Grace. Then, after an excellent meal, came more recitals: The Immortal Memory, by Liz Jack; The Toast To
The Lassies, by Harry Fleming, and Julia Fleming responding with a Reply Frae The Lassies. Harry then offered a vote of thanks to the hosts, and the speakers for making this Burns Supper so special. The raffle raised 60 euros, which goes to The Lions Club of Arona, Las and Costa del Silencio.
Dig those stetsons out again! IT’S time for those cowgirl/boy hats and boots again because line-dancing is returning to Costa del Silencio. San Miguel Lions have
organised a special afternoon for members and guests on Sunday, 27th February, at The Flamingo, Trebol, from 1-5pm. Tickets are 10 euros,
including a buffet, and are available from Lion Truda on 666 957 942, or inquire at the Lions’ Silencio Charity Shop.
Helping Hands visit Bollywood LOCAL charity Helping Hands in Tenerife are putting on a Bollywoodstyle Indian Night at Bombay Babu in Torviscas on Thursday, 7th March. It’s a fund-raiser in aid of the Children of Guardyl and The Disabled School at

Saturday 2 February and Sunday 3rd February The opening weekend of the Six Nations Rugby kicks off with Wales v Ireland and England v Scotland on Saturday. Jason Mohammad introduces live coverage from Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium as Wales begin the defence of their Six Nations crown. The Welsh opened the 2012 campaign with victory over Declan Kidney’s side in Dublin before going on to complete their third Grand Slam in seven years. But since then they have endured a torrid time, losing their Test series in Australia 3-0, before suffering four defeats in the Autumn Internationals series, including a surprise loss to Samoa. Ireland will be looking to build on the promise they showed last time out with a 46-24 victory over Argentina in November.

At Cliveden House in Berkshire, Melvyn looks back to the Roaring Twenties to discover how the other half lived, when a group of bright young people created Britain's first modern cult of celebrity. The tragic story of Britain's original 'it girl', Elizabeth Ponsonby, is told by her niece Elizabeth. The current Lord Astor returns to his ancestral home to give a guided tour.

First Time Farmers Channel 4, 20:00
The penultimate episode of the series about the new generation of farmers focuses on young people who don't come from farming backgrounds but are determined to get into the business. Bunny is petite, young and feminine; she may not look like a farmer but she knows how to drive a tractor, cart corn, deliver lambs and judge stock. Bunny was voted 'most likely to be a farmer's wife' at school but her dream is to become a farmer in her own right and own her own farm one day. Henry from the Cotswolds is a full-time shepherd who oversees a flock of 500 ewes with the help of his two sheepdogs and his very own shepherd's crook. The programme follows him as he guides his lambs from the birthing shed to the supermarket. And 21-year-old Will from Dorset works on a dairy farm in Somerset. He got into farming because he's a committed tractor head - his first word was tractor - but when his boss injures himself he must learn how to take care of the cows during the busy calving season.

The next morning, Caris receives a letter from Merthin confessing that he cannot forget her. When Godwyn inevitably gets his hands on the money, he keeps it, his excuse being that there is no document confirming it as convent property.

The Escape Artist A thriller to look forward to - Filming has begun this week on The Escape Artist, a legal thriller for BBC One. Created and written by David Wolstencroft (Spooks, Shooting Dogs), The Escape Artist stars David Tennant (Doctor Who, True Love), Toby Kebbell (RocknRolla, Black Mirror), Sophie Okonedo (The Slap, Criminal Justice), and Ashley Jensen (Extras, Ugly Betty). The Escape Artist is an original three-part suspense thriller set in the world of criminal law. David Tennant plays Will Burton, a talented junior barrister who specialises in spiriting people out of tight legal corners, hence his nickname of “The Escape Artist”. Will is in high demand as he has never lost a case. But when his talents acquit the prime suspect in a horrific murder trial, that brilliance comes back to bite him with unexpected and chilling results. “The law often seems like an intellectual exercise”, says Wolstencroft, “But scratch under the surface, and it’s all blood and guts. I wanted to write a thriller set in the legal world that’s as much about those primal feelings as it is about the twists and turns of the case. David Tennant is one of the most accomplished and iconic actors of his generation. I cannot wait to see him in Will’s shoes.” Producer, Hilary Bevan Jones, says: “The outstanding cast we have assembled, which is headed by David Tennant, Toby Kebbell, Sophie Okonedo and Ashley Jensen is a testament to David’s breathtaking and original script. Directed by Brian Welsh and produced by Paul Frift, I believe The Escape Artist will be one of the most anticipated TV drama events of 2013.” Executive producer for the BBC, Matthew Read, says: “After the incredible response we got for William Boyd’s Restless, it’s fantastic to be working with Hilary Bevan Jones and Endor again on an original drama that brings together the very best of British talent.”

Africa David Attenborough takes a breathtaking journey through the vast and diverse continent of Africa. Northern Africa is home to the greatest desert on Earth, the Sahara. On the fringes, huge zebras battle over dwindling resources and naked mole rats avoid the heat by living a bizarre underground existence. Within the desert, where the sand dunes 'sing', camels seek out water with the help of their herders and tiny swallows navigate across thousands of square miles to find a solitary oasis. This is a story of an apocalypse and how, when nature is overrun, some are forced to flee, some endure, but a few seize the opportunity to establish a new order.

John Craven explores the historic ruins of Jervaulx Abbey, once home to Cistercian monks who would have farmed the land around the abbey. It is thought that the monks could have made the very first Wensleydale cheese with their own French recipe; John attempts to help make cheese on the site for the first time in more than 500 years. Julia Bradbury goes on the hunt for Britain's native red squirrel. Few people know that Yorkshire is a red squirrel stronghold, but Julia meets a photographer who feeds the squirrels and regularly sees more than 20 a day from his hide in the forest. Jules Hudson is also in the Dales, following in the footsteps of Britain's most famous vet, James Herriot. He goes out on the farm rounds with a young veterinary couple who specialise in large animal work.

A look at the work of high court enforcement officers, also known as sheriffs, as they strive to retrieve cash for members of the public that are owed money. A 26-year old office worker won her sexual harassment case but her ex-boss never gave her the money she was awarded. Can the sheriffs put that right? They try to track down the manager of a construction company which owes a former employee 8,000 pounds. And they pay a visit to a car dealership that sold a doctor a car which was a disaster from day one. The dealers refused to fix it or give him his money back so the sheriffs have had to step in and, when things get heated, the police race to the scene.

Richard III: The King in the Car Park Channel 4, 21.00 When a skeleton was reported found under a Leicester council car park last September, the news broke around the world. Could these be the remains, lost for 500 years, of our most infamous king? Now, in a world exclusive, Channel 4 has the full inside story of the hunt for Richard III. The discovery of the body and the battery of scientific tests to establish its identity have been carried out in complete secrecy and to date, no footage of them has been seen by anyone but the investigating team. But this programme - made by the only team allowed to follow the scientists - tells every step, twist and turn of the story. It unveils a brand new facial reconstruction made from the skull and - in scenes to be shot just hours before broadcast - reveals the results of the final tests that will confirm or deny the body’s identity. Richard III’s claims to infamy are many: he was the last king to die in battle - his death at the Battle of Bosworth, where he was said to be dragged from his horse and struck on the head with a poleaxe - effectively ended the Wars of the Roses. Thus resulting in a Tudor dynasty lasting more than a century. He has long been connected to the disappearance of his young nephews - the ‘Princes in the Tower’ - and his repulsive depiction as a hunchback villain in William Shakespeare’s play ‘Richard III’ is probably his most recognisable representation. This film, presented by actor and writer Simon Farnaby, charts the remarkable detective story that led to the dig. Screenwriter and member of the Richard III Society Philippa Langley has spent the last three years on a personal quest to uncover the remains of the Franciscan friary of Greyfriars where she believes he was hastily buried after the battle. Driven by a burning sense of injustice on behalf of his widely-accepted negative portrayal as one of the most reviled Kings of England and a desire to reclaim his reputation, for Philippa, finding his body could disprove he was a hunchback and expose Shakespeare’s play as Tudor spin and propaganda.

Being Eileen BBC1, 22.35
Being Eileen is a new six-part, heartwarming comedy starring Sue Johnston (The Royle Family, Coronation Street) which follows the lives of the large, close-knit and dysfunctional Lewis family from Birkenhead, Merseyside. In episode one, chaos descends on the Lewis family as it appears that Eileen has gone missing and isn’t answering her mobile phone, prompting daughter Paula to have a meltdown and drag the rest of the family into a search to find her. The series features Sue Johnston as Eileen Lewis, the recently widowed matriarch of the Lewis clan, her son and daughter-in-law Pete (Dean Andrews, Last Tango In Halifax) and Mandy (Julie Graham, Survivors), daughter and son-in-law Paula (Elizabeth Berrington, In Bruges, Stella) and Ray (William Ash, Shameless, Waterloo Road) and both couples’ respective children, Ethan and Melissa, and Jack and Liam. The recent trip to Lapland (in the successful Christmas 2011 special) changed Eileen’s outlook on life and left her determined to live life to the full rather than ‘sitting in the corner dressed in black’. But life back home is a little less inspiring than Lapland’s spectacular vistas and Northern lights. Eileen struggles to find her own peace and joy in life after Ted, as often confounded by her hilariously selfcentred children and loveable but trying grandchildren.

Brain Doctors: Emergency BBC2, 21.00 High risk, extremely skilled and breathtakingly complex, Brain Doctors features surgeons working at the very frontiers of their medical expertise and knowledge. Landmark Films has had remarkable access over nine months to the neurosurgeons at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital – sharing the daily highs and lows – and to their patients whose lives depend on their skill. Cameras follow both paediatric and adult surgeons as they carry out high risk operations on the most complex, delicate and important organ, removing brain tumours, correcting brain abnormalities and saving the lives of trauma victims. Some of the patients are what Paediatric Neurosurgeon Jay Jayamohan calls ‘frequent flyers’ – children with complex conditions who require a lifetime of surgery. The films highlight the strong bonds of trust and commitment that are forged between families and their surgeons. Patients often arrive in the Neurosurgery Department shell-shocked: a routine visit to the optician or GP has triggered a process which ends with major brain surgery to remove a life threatening tumour. Tracey, a midwife and mum to two sons, lies in a coma with massive head injuries suffered in a car crash. Husband John escaped relatively unscathed and sits constantly by her bed, willing her to open her eyes. Martin was struck down by a mysterious virus which has rendered him unconscious and unable to breathe for himself. Every day, his wife Lisa, checks for signs Martin is coming round. For doctors and patients, the NICU is a physically and mentally gruelling place to be.

Crash Mountain cuts the numbers down a bit and Dizzy Dummies cuts it down further, whilst introducing the contestants to the Hose Man and the Ball Boys just to make it even harder. Each programme culminates in the Wipeout Zone where things get really competitive in order to win the prize and a lifetime of respect. The action is better than ever, the laughs are bigger than ever and the competition is harder than ever before.

Martin has had the pair for two years, but they still have much to learn as they are sent away to expert trainer Robert Sampson to be instructed in the art of cart-pulling. Martin himself then travels to Europe and America, discovering how working horses are once more proving their value. In Italy he finds out how heavy horses are better for the soil than any tractor.

Martin Clunes looks at the important role of the world’s working horses as he begins training his own adored Clydesdales to work on his Dorset farm in Martin Clunes: Heavy Horse Power. The one off film follows Martin putting Ronnie and Bruce through their paces, and his travels to Europe and America to discover how working horses are proving their value again in the modern world. Martin added the Clydesdales to his Dorset menagerie two years ago, and describes them as “lovable but uncontrollable teenagers”. Ronnie and Bruce have got a lot to learn, so they are off to hoof camp to be taught commands, how to pull a cart and become familiar with harness and chains, under the expert eye of trainer, Robert Sampson, who says there is a good niche market for trained workhorses. “If you’d said ten years ago that I would be driving a seven and a half ton truck with my own two young Clydesdales taking them to hoof camp I’d have laughed in your face. But it is a reality and it’s very exciting,” says Martin. “People say I must get my horses working. Now they are at an age where they need development. They are getting a bit bored.” Robert Sampson breeds and trains Percherons - a French breed of heavy horse - on his farm in Hampshire. During the two month course he not only has to teach Ronnie and Bruce how to be working horses, but to make sure Martin knows how to drive them. Heavy horses have been used to work in the mines, on canals and for delivering beer in Britain for hundreds of years. But some breeds, including the Clydesdales were nearly extinct in the 1970s as machinery took over the work. Martin discovers the traditional uses of the working horse, and how people are finding new ways to keep horses working in today’s world of high tech equipment. He travels to a beautiful vineyard in northern Italy to meet Henry Finzi-Constantine who believes that horses are better for the soil than tractors. He says the horses not only work the land but fertilise it at the same time. Martin drives the cart drawn by the “Rolls Royce of horses”,the Comptoires, as the grapes are harvested. “A day working in that Italian vineyard is enough for me to think that having working horses on my farm can only be a good thing,” Martin says.

Episode three of The Genius of vention reveals the fascinating chain of events that made such everyday miracles possible. I
T’S difficult to know where to go when I get a rare night off, but last week I had a spark of inspiration.
I remembered that Leon Cormack had been telling me for ages about Magic Bar, and that he was now playing there every night, from midnight till 3am. It is right opposite the main taxi rank at the Safari Centre and, from the moment I got out of the cab, I knew I was in an area where my pockets needed to be a little deeper. The first shop window displayed a lovely dress jacket with a price tag more suited to my mortgage payment than my wardrobe’s content. Across the road at the entrance to Magic, you are greeted by frontdoor security staff. It’s a different atmosphere from I’m used to, and I like it. A long, red carpet leads you inside. The decor is top-drawer, and it’s a lot bigger than it looks from the outside. The main performance area is a large stage with a grand piano and plenty of dance-floor space in front of the stage. As I’m admiring the lighting rig, and other geeky things I tend to notice in a venue on my first visit, Leon catches my eye and invites me to the bar at the back of the stage. I don’t know whether it is a VIP bar but, for the purpose of this story, I want it to be because I certainly felt a bit special there. Leon begins his set and quickly invites guests up to sing with him. Of course, I was not going
MAGIC BAR
to escape, either, so I did a bit of Lionel Richie and then made way for many more Tenerife entertainers. Leigh D sang next and was accompanied by Leon on the grand piano to Rihanna and Katy Perry songs. I’m totally into this place instantly. I bumped into so many people in Magic Bar - musicians and singers I hadn’t seen for some time, and it was good to catch up. What is also so excellent about this venue is its international appeal, because there is such a variety of nationalities in the bar, enjoying the entertainment. And language is not a problem as most of the immaculately-dressed staff are multi-lingual. Needless to say, I now have a new, regular haunt! At the bar, I spotted Dj James Hanbury, somebody I’d known for a long time but hadn’t
seen for a while. So, another apple juice and a catch-up is on the cards. I was chatting with James for about five minutes before I even realised he was at the bar
bit silly instantly after saying: “Hello Billy.” I couldn’t help it, and I’m sure it happens a lot with soap stars, especially. But I was forgiven after buying a
Diggler back at Linekers
SOME of the old guard over here will remember the legendary Dj Diggler, from Linekers bar. Well, you’ll be pleased to know that he’s back here for a month, and appearing there again. After a chat with him on Oasis Fm last

with EastEnders actor Perry Fenwick, who plays Billy Mitchell in the soap. I felt a little rude having my back to him so I apologised and said hello. However, I felt a
round of shots. It’s so good to catch up with friends, and there are so many people I know in Magic that I can’t believe I’ve not been here before. Around 1am, I ventured around to the front of the stage to find Leon had been joined by Andy, from Triple A, a vocal harmony group working on the Island, and two go-go dancers. This place gets better. The atmosphere has gone up a level by this time and Leon and Andy, for the next 90 minutes, they bang out some superb songs from Chris Brown, Pitbull, Maroon 5 and Plan B, to name but a few, and the dance floor is packed. This is definitely a place I’ll be visiting again. Leon Cormack is on stage every night from midnight and everything’s in place: first-class bar, excellent atmosphere and a ton of variety on stage. Plus, it’s not as expensive as you might think.
Wednesday, it was clear to me that this guy is the real deal. He is one of the original pioneers of the Linekers format, and Diggler tells me: “I’m taking the place ‘back to basics’ this month.” He is re-inventing some of the old formats
during February and taking the roof off nightly. Linekers is always packed with holidaymakers and residents and, with Diggler on board, February will be something special to look forward to. Linekers also welcome
new Dj Luke Warne, who will be working closely with Dj Diggler for the next few weeks before taking over as resident Dj in March. Luke’s in action at 9pm every night and then, two hours later, hands over to Diggler, who continues till 4am.

The amazing Amazon flies higher than ever
B
R I TA I N ’ S high streets took another battering in the last quarter of 2012 as online retail giant Amazon revealed record sales.
The US-based company said international sales, including the UK, were up 20% to £5.7bn, giving more cause for concern to British traders. The downside is that several UK high-street names have called in administrators recently. Key sales product for Amazon is the Kindle Fire HD, because it flies out at just above cost price, with the profit stream coming from the digital content. Amazon’s share price also hit a record high after the company reported these better-than- expected quarterly profits. Yet it’s profits had dropped in recent years as the company invested in its distribution network and its Kindle business as part of a long-term growth plan. Amazon mainly operates as a retailer, buying products at wholesale prices, storing them and then selling at a slight markup to online consumers.
It is a low-margin business that has been embraced by consumers, with knockon effects which have seriously damaged the high street’s health. This year alone, Blockbuster, HMV and Jessops have called in administrators, yet Amazon have confounded critics by blossoming, despite the intense scrutiny over their complicated tax structures affecting the UK especially. It not the only multinational company under the spotlight because MPs questioned top executives of Google, Starbucks and Amazon extensively last year over their tax
arrangements. Andrew Cecil, Amazon director of public policy, was forced to explain why a CD or a book, bought in pounds on Amazon. co.uk and delivered from a UK warehouse by the Royal Mail, is registered in Luxembourg. Earlier last year, it was reported that Amazon generated annual UK sales over the past three years of between £7.6bn and £10.3bn but paid virtually no corporation tax. Further fears have been raised about Amazon’s ongoing strategy as it expands into other businesses which are potentially more profitable, including cloud computing, digital
content and acting as an online market-place for other sellers. They are growing faster than the company’s original retail operations and, as a result, are boos ting profitability still further. Jeff Bezos, founder and chief executive, said: “We’re now seeing the transition we’ve been expecting. After five years, eBooks is a multibillion-dollar category for us and growing fast - up approximately 70% last year.” For the current quarter, Amazon expects revenue of up to £10.5bn, which is a fraction lower than analysts had predicted.
Banks delay refunds to card-fraud victims NEARLY a third of card fraud victims are having to wait to get their money back, according to new Which? research, despite obligations on banks to refund
customers immediately. The survey of more than 4,000 Which? members revealed 29% of those suffering credit and debit card fraud are having to wait weeks
or even months to get their cash back. The research found Barclays and Barclaycard customers were least likely to be reimbursed immediately, with nearly four in 10 (39%) customers experiencing delays. Even the best in our snapshot survey, First Direct, delayed refunds to 17% of customers. However, 98% of people reporting fraud that we surveyed eventually got their money back, indicating that too many card providers are being unfairly suspicious of their customers when it comes to card fraud. Which? executive director Richard Lloyd said: “Our research shows that banks are too
often failing to refund customers immediately when they have been victims of fraud. With £340 million lost to card fraud a year, there are large sums at stake that can leave people seriously out of pocket and unable to pay essential bills. “Banks are required by law to give victims of fraud an immediate refund, unless they have evidence that person is acting fraudulently or with gross negligence. They should do everything they can to help people who find themselves in this situation through no fault of their own, as part of the big change that’s urgently needed to make banks work for customers not bankers.”

Containers are so perfect for patios
T
R E E GROWING in containers can add so much to a small garden or in limited areas such as patios or balconies.
That makes them a must over here because many residents live in apartments, with no gardens. But they usually have some space outside, in the shape of a patio, etc, to enjoy the sunshine and unwind in the evenings after a tough day on the beach. These can look so bare if they are decorated with garden furniture only, and that’s why trees, shrubs and flowers, in containers can add a splash of colour to the scene. Any shape which can house the rootball of a tree is suitable, as long as it blends in -even an old metal bucket or discarded bath, which can be painted to smarten them up. But
make sure there are plenty of drainage holes. Wooden, slatted containers, often seen in town centres, are perfect in the right surroundings, Make sure, also, that
you do not attempt to put a small tree in a large container, but pot it up in stages until it’s ready for one that sits about 18 inches deep. In the UK, frost-proof terracotta pots are
heavy and essential because they provide extra stability to prevent trees blowing down in windy weather. Mind you, with the weather we’ve been experiencing here of late, that could equally apply to Tenerife. However, the pots are so porous that the compost dries out quickly and the weight makes them difficult to move around. Your best bet is to opt for lightweight plastic if you want to shift the trees and plants around, and they retain moisture well. Metal, wood and stone pots are also available from all reputable garden centres wherever you are. When it comes to planting, most trees will thrive in a loam-based compost, such as John Innes No 3, which is fairly heavy and provides good stability. Before planting, however, add some pieces of broken terracotta pot to the base, or a two-inch layer of gravel, to improve drainage. Acid-loving trees
such as Amelanchier should be planted in loam-based John Innes Ericaceous compost. Incidentally, if you are intending to have containers on your patio, say, then make sure you raise them off the floor and slide trays underneath to catch the excess water. Container-grown trees and plants will dry out much quicker than those growing in the ground and will need regular watering. Often, overhanging plant foliage in containers shields the compost from the sun (or rain in the UK). So keep the compost moist but not wet at all times, even when it’s windy because it can dry out quickly in these conditions. You can boost your trees in springtime by refreshing the top layer of compost annually, which is easily done. Scrape away about two inches of compost from the surface carefully and replace with fresh compost, mixing in some controlled-release fertiliser granules. In exposed gardens or
terraces, again in the UK, container plants will need protecting during winter as those roots growing near the edges are vulnerable to freezing temperatures. The problem can be solved instantly by wrapping the container with bubble-wrap or hessian, and hold securely in place with twine. As for the choice of trees and plants for your containers, there are plenty to pick from, such as: *A restricted apple tree, grown on a semidwarfing rootstock *Japanese maple *Topiary specimens of box, yew, bay, privet or holly *Dwarf conifer (always a popular choice) *Something unusual like Sophora microphylla or Albizia julibrissin *Tender trees, such as olives, pomegranates and citrus are ideal in pots because they can easily be moved into a frost-free place over winter - and out of the scorching effect of the sun over here during the summer months.

Easy watering, feeding and plant support. I’ve never seen these before but it looks like if you can’t find them at the garden centre then they’re on Amazon.co.uk. The new invention is deal for grow bags, large pots or in the veg garden, they have a central inner pot that creates a deeper planting zone for healthier root growth. A 3 litre outer ‘moat’ has six 2.8cm (1”) watering spikes which penetrate below the surface, delivering water and liquid feed direct to the roots at a rate that the plant is better able to absorb, minimising wastage (it typically takes 3-6 hours for the water reservoir to drain fully).

Your face musn’t be too round, your nose not too long - and you also must be in proportion to your new haircut. EGG yolks are known to be high in cholesterol, but they are not the dietary sin we once thought they were.
A new analysis suggests that for most people, eating one egg a day is not bad for the heart. And anyway, the yolk is full of vitamins A, E and D, the latter being especially important since most people lack vitamin D. Also, eating whole eggs doubles the protein intake. Research scientists in
the US who reviewed eight prospective studies, including 263,938 subjects, pooled the data for analysis and gave eggs the nod. Their results were the same for men and women, and in all age ranges. The only exceptions were diabetics because for them, high egg consumption is associated with an increased risk of heart disease. But there were too few diabetics in the studies to draw reliable conclusions. The authors, writing online in January’s journal BMJ, also agreed
that most of the studies had no information about the cooking methods, which could have affected the results. Dr Frank B. Hu, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at Harvard, and a co-author of the study, said two, three or more eggs a day might be harmful, in theory, although there was no available data. “But within the modest range of one a day, which applies to most people, there is no doseresponse relationship with higher consumption,” he added.

Newly-jobless victims are targeted for heart attacks P E O P L E who have recently been made redundant are more likely to suffer a heart attack than those in employment. Researchers found that each successive job loss was linked to a higher chance of heart problems among more than 13,000 older adults. But it is not clear if, or how, unemployment itself might have caused the extra heart attacks. Matthew Dupre, lead researcher on the report
from the Duke Clinical Research Institute in North Carolina, said a combination of stress, worsening lifestyle and poor management of chronic conditions without health insurance could be to blame. “Those without a job might be unable to control their high blood pressure, or manage their diabetes (with their usual medication), or rates of smoking may be exacerbated,” he added. “But it’s too early to know for sure what is behind the link, which means it’s also too early to recommend ways to ward off heart problems
among the recentlyunemployed. The new data came from a US
study of 13,451 adults, who were interviewed
every other year, for an average of 12 years, about their health, lifestyle and life events, such as employment and job loss. People were especially likely to have a heart attack during their first year of being out of work Those taking part in the study were averaged 55 years old at the start, and two-thirds of them were overweight or obese. One in seven of them was initially unemployed. During the research period, 1,061 (8%) of all participants had a heart attack. Dupre’s team found
the more times people had lost their jobs leading up to the latest survey, the higher their chances of a heart attack. Unemployment was still linked to a 35% increased risk of heart attack after the researchers accounted for the effects of poverty and education, as well as race, age and other heart risks. “We weren’t surprised to find the association, but we were surprised to find that the effects were so large - on a par with classic risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes,” said Dupre.
Lose those extra few pounds - with Viagra! NEW evidence suggests that the erectile-dysfunction drug Viagra might also help burn away excess fat. The drug, generically known as sildenafil, helped convert undesirable white fat cells to energy-burning beige fat cells in laboratory mice, according to researchers in Germany. It was already known that mice given Viagra became less prone to obesity when fed a highfat diet. But it was not clear why. Dr Alexander Pfeifer, director of the University of Bonn’s Institute for Pharmacology and Toxicology, said he already had some clues. Viagra works by preventing the degradation of the intercellular messenger cGMP, and the doctor had long been testing the effects of cGMP on fat cells. So he fed the drug to mice for seven days and monitored
their fat cells. What transpired was that the troublesome white fat cells, associated with human problems like the dreaded spare tire, were being converted to the beneficial type of fat cells at a higher rate than usual. Dr Pfeifer said the results were “very promising”, but he
1st February - 7th February 2013
cautioned against taking the drug purely for dieting purposes. “The idea of having one pill and then obesity goes away is a dream,” he added. “What we are up to is basic research in mice.” But more research into Viagra may well be able to stand up the theory.

home is taking over from the microwave
B
USY Brits are ditching microwave meals in favour of homecooked ‘fast food’, research has revealed. Worries about the cost and their diet mean that people are now cooking something quick from scratch, such as a stir-fry or omelette, instead of reaching for the staple microwave ready-meal when they are short of time. The study, conducted by British Lion Eggs to try and encourage home cooks to rustle up quick meals from scratch, also found that almost a quarter of Brits admitted their microwave is completely redundant (or even said they don’t even own
one). And despite the myth that students and young adults are the most likely to survive on microwave food, the study found that the over 50s are more likely to consider the gadget to be an important part of their kitchen. Andrew Joret, chairman of the British Egg Industry Council said: ”People seem to be becoming more adventurous in the kitchen, and are now cooking more meals from scratch, even when they are in a rush. ”Grabbing a microwave meal when time is tight is no longer what the majority of people do – instead, they are relying on quick-fix meals which are healthy and quick to cook and prepare. ”It’s interesting to see that the younger generation seems to be the ones who are embracing fresh-cooked fast food. ”The general consensus is that young people are most likely to rely on a microwave for their meals, but it seems that this isn’t the case.”
The study of 2,000 Brits found that when they are tight on time, seven in ten people are rustling up a quick dish from fresh ingredients. Now, just one in five people are relying on microwave or readymeals for a quick fix. The study also suggests that the popularity of celebrity chefs and cooking shows on television has led to a drop in the nation’s microwave use, with two thirds of people being inspired to try a new dish they have seen on a TV programme. Another 68% think younger people are becoming more inspired to cook from scratch thanks to the popularity of celebrity chefs. But the research found that adventurous cooks are looking for inspiration even further away from the traditional meansrecipe books are being neglected for the internet or Facebook instead. When looking for something new to try, 47% scour the vast selection of cooking websites while another
29% rely purely on search engines like Google to source culinary inventions. Almost one in five save things they have seen on TV, 23% cut ideas out of newspapers or magazines and one in twenty even turn to YouTube for inspiration. But less than one in ten would go and buy a new recipe book. 28% of people have even been inspired to try a new dish or recipe after seeing a picture posted by a friend on social network websites such as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. 24% of people admit if they create a dish they are proud of, they always head online again- this time posting a picture on their social network profiles. Researchers also revealed that 83% of Brits do enjoy cooking, and another 79% of people enjoy experimenting with their meals and ingredients. More than eight in ten also like trying out new recipes or unusual dishes, with 62% saying they consider themselves to be an adventurous person in the kitchen. Andrew Joret said: “It seems more people are reaching for main meals like omelettes which don’t take any longer to cook than heating up a microwave meal – but can be both healthier and cheaper.”

We’re going away, whatever it costs! M U L T I -T R I P holidays are set to be this year’s vogue as people plan to take extra trips and spend more, regardless of the cost.

their plans for 2013 and 71% said they would take more than one holiday, while 42% have set their sights on going away at least three times. Most of them are aware that this jetset lifestyle will cost a packet, and almost 40% have accepted that they will have to dig deep to finance the holidays.
Last year, eight out of 10 paid for their last holiday with savings, while 20% began to save for their next trip as soon as they returned from their holiday. But though the majority say they are being conscientious, 59% admit to spending more of their budget when they are lapping up the sun. Of those without holiday savings, 16% paid for their last trip with a loan or credit card, while 2% asked friends or relatives to cough up for them. And 50% of those who borrowed money to finance a trip last year, have yet to pay the
cash back. The survey showed that at least one annual holiday was an absolute must for many, whether they could actually afford it, while 58% of snow and rain-sodden Brits said
they would find a way to get away, regardless of their financial situation. Skyscanner’s Victoria Bailie said: “Holidays really are valued as an essential part of our
lives and a chance to recharge the batteries. “However, it’s not just that one summer trip to the sun that people are planning but two, three or even more trips away.” “To help make the holiday budget stretch that little further, it’s worth looking around for good deals, and using price-alert services to keep an eye on flight prices as they rise and fall. “Many are also looking to Eastern Europe for alternative, good-value city breaks, while Croatia proved popular with people looking for an alternative destination in the Med.”

Classy Cupra on the ball
S
EAT’S newly-revised Ibiza Cupra really looks the part! It’s better looking, faster and more comfortable than the previous model. But the big question is: will it be good enough to compete with the new Ford Fiesta ST? It’s nippy, that’s for sure, with a top speed of 142mph, and it is definitely more subtle than it ever has been. And SEAT have also managed to make it cheaper to run - and it’s a little more comfortable as well. Updates to the styling and the interior help maintain the upmarket
feel, and the long list of standard kit means the £18,570 price-tag isn’t likely to go much higher. One problem is the price, because it is still more expensive than the upcoming Fiesta ST, and that could turn out to be a bit of an issue for SEAT. The company gave their Ibiza a small makeover last year, but the Cupra performance version was left untouched until now. That’s all changed, however, and just in time because Ford are planning to release their Fiesta ST any day now, while Renault want to replace the Renaultsport Clio this year. The Cupra looks up for a battle royal, though, and while it’s always
been a good-looking car, this face-lifted model is even more handsome. The exterior changes add up to a new nose, a set of bi-xenon headlights with a stylish LED shape, and some new tail-lights. Power comes from the same twin-charged 178bhp 1.4-litre TSI, but with an engine remap that’s dropped the 0-62mph time by threetenths to 6.9 seconds, which is exactly the same as the forthcoming Fiesta ST. Impressively, the same engine remap has improved fuel economy by 8% per cent, up to 47.9mpg, and dropped CO2 emissions by 9g/km to 139g/km. Changes to the way the Cupra drives are pretty minimal, with
a few tweaks to the suspension aimed at improving comfort. There’s a noticeable improvement to the ride, though, which feels a lot more forgiving over bumpy roads, and handling is seriously impressive. The 1.4 TSI performs superbly during any kind of driving, with enough low-end torque for dawdling around town and plenty of punch at the top end. It sounds meaty as well, with a low, growling exhaust note combined with the whoosh of turbo waste gates. The seven-speed DSG auto is as fantastic as ever, making the Cupra seriously usable in traffic and around town. True, it still can’t match the purity of a manual,
but selecting your own gears using the steering wheel-mounted paddles comes close. There are some improvements to the interior, including a redesigned centre console. The gearshift surround is finished in glossblack, along with the door handles and the steering wheel insert, helping to make the Cupra feel more premium.
Buyers will no doubt be impressed by the amount of gadgets included as standard, like climate-control, cruisecontrol, Bluetooth and SEAT’s Portable system, which includes touchscreen sat-nav. The Cupra is the better equipped than the new Fiesta ST-2, but there’s definitely room for the Fiesta and the new Renaultsport Clio to offer more fun from behind the wheel.

Toyota-BMW’s joint platform for speed! TOYOTA and BMW are planning to co-develop an eco-friendly, highperformance sports car, and other innovative utilities. The companies have signed a long-term agreement to work hand-in-hand to create a new fuel-cell system, and new lightweight material technology. They have also signed a new deal to collaborate on the research and development of new lithium-air batteries, seen as the successor to the current lithiumion cells. A statement announcing the collaboration read: “We are convinced that fuel-cell technology is one of the solutions necessary to achieve zero emissions.” To that end, the firms have agreed to develop jointly a new fuel-cell stack, a hydrogen tank, motor and battery, aiming to have cars on the market by 2020. The deal is of major significance, given the
size of BMW and Toyota because decisions about standardising the fuel-cell infrastructure could dictate what the rest of the car industry will have to use in the future. Of more interest to performance-car fans, almost certainly, will be a new feasibility study into developing a new mid-size sports car platform. The study will be completed by the end of 2013, with the Toyota model likely to be a car that slots into the range above the GT 86, possibly reviving the Celica name. A Lexus model is also possible.
1st February - 7th February 2013
The sports car architecture is described as “a midsize sports vehicle”, and if the new architecture is signedoff, a car could even be developed in time for the arrival of the new, third-generation BMW Z4 in 2015. The planned car might also feature advances made by both firms in the development of lightweight technology. BMW already has made progress with Carbon Fibre Reinforced Composites (CFRP) for its Project i vehicles, and the firms already agree that it could be used in the
new platform. The second agreement covers the development of postlithium batteries. The companies will research a lithium-air battery, which, the firms say, will have an “energy density greatly exceeding that of current lithium-ion batteries”. Estimates state that an electric car powered by a lithium-air battery of the same size as a current lithium-ion one could boast a range that is five times greater. And that would represent a tremendous breakthrough The companies are already linked,
businesswise, because BMW currently supply Toyota with small diesel engines for the European market. The new deal would give BMW access to Toyota expertise in electrified vehicles, and, conversely, Toyota access to BMW’s strength in premium performance vehicles. “BMW know how to make a car perform,” said Toyota President Akio Toyoda at a press conference with BMW chief Norbert Reithofer at the German company’s Munich headquarters. “I am the one who is most looking forward
to a sports car which is environmentally friendly.” Reithofer said in a statement: “We aim to further strengthen our competitive position in sustainable future technologies.” BMW are in the process of developing a line of electrified cars, their “I” brand, and have invested also in the U.S. in lightweight carbonfibre technology. They have shown concepts for a carbonbodied i3 small electric sedan and an i8 hybrid sports car which, they say, will roll out this year or next. The Toyota-BMW follows BMW’s announcement that that were dropping talks with General Motors for tech-sharing on fuel cells. The company also said they were reviewing their deal with Peugeot for small engines, in the light of GM’s deal to buy a stake in the French automaker.

ELL, well, well. It happened again. In this column a few weeks ago, I suggested the merits of using Guillem Marti instead of top scorer Aridane.
I pointed out his higher workrate, eye for goal, hunger and so on. In the following match, he came off the bench and notched the late winner. So on Sunday? Well, he only went and did it again! It’s great to be right, but I’m still baffled why manager Alvaro Cervera keeps him in reserve. Matri has more than earned a run in the starting XI, yet he remains on the bench. The poor lad must have splinters! If anything, leading scorer Aridane’s form has worsened and, to Segunda B

Aridane apart, Chechu is going through a quiet spell, while Luismi has been anonymous since Bonfire Night. The side as a whole can be guilty of coasting through games, but they will need to be wide awake over the next
my eyes, he has been munching on a few pies. But in Cervera we trust, and the results speak for themselves. Sunday’s easy win over Ourense maintained CDT’s lead at the top, and it also kept up their impressive home form. Tenerife have conceded only three goals in Santa Cruz, and we are now into February. I don’t believe any sen-

fortnight. This Sunday they travel to Caudal, who are having a smart season. They are just outside the playoffs and are excellent at home. They have already turned over Real Oviedo and Salamanca, and only fast-improving Leganes have beaten them since week three. Talking of Leganes, they come to Santa Cruz in a week’s time absolutely flying. I flagged their form up a few weeks ago, and they are showing no signs of stopping. They are unbeaten in 12 matches and that should be 13 after the weekend. The fat has been trimmed from the Tenerife squad in this transfer window, and any injury crisis will be solved by the B team, who are doing okay a league below. Abel and Germain went last week, along with one-time wonderkid Josmar. Jeremy was released, Ayose loaned out - and on Thursday, Victor Bravo was put out of his misery. His contract has been ripped up and questions should be asked of director of football Quique Martin. Why resign a player, make him
your top earner, and then play him for just 40 minutes? It’s a shocker and needs to be explained. Ditto Josmar. Why retain him on 100,000 euros a season and release him after two games, when he could have been sold for 500,000 euros back in August? Those cracks will be papered over when we go up, but even so. Tenerife did bring in one new face this week. Centre-back Baltasar Rigo has joined after being released by Numancia. He is not the best and is purely back-up.
Tenerife have a shocking record with exNumancia players. Remember Natalio and Julio Alvarez? Rigo, who will be able to slip straight into the squad, revealed at a press conference that he already feels at home, saying: “I know a few of the lads already. I roomed with Chechu when we were at Girona, and I know Javi Moyano from Almeria. “And Guillem Marti is a friend from when we are younger. I spoke with Airam (former CDT striker) and he told me what a great club Tenerife is.”

La Central heated by Emeralds! THE eight matches played in last week’s John Lowe team handicap quarter-finals produced drama and excitement galore! Five were won by the odd game, one went down to the very last dart and another saw the mother of all comebacks! That was in Los Abrigos, as Premiership side La Central faced Division 2 Emerald Lounge, in the John Lowe Trophy. All was looking well for La Central as they cruised into a 3-0 lead. But nobody could foresee what happened next. Somehow,
the Emeralds battled came back and took the match 4-3! Captain Darren is, reportedly, still in shock. Bar 180 B squared up to Xtreme Sports Bar down on the Golf, and gave a good account of themselves as they pushed the current holders all the way. But Mike and his lads took the first of the doubles legs to secure a 4-3 win. At the same venue, Ourplace Playboys had an 80-point head-start over Bar 180 A. But that was not enough and the San Blas boys booked their semi-final spot with a 6-1 success.

GAFFERS A are 20 matches unbeaten, but their proud record nearly came to an end on Tuesday. Inn The Pink A have been boosted by the return of former League Singles champion Graham, who helped them push Gaffers all the way. On another night they would have returned with something better than an honourable 7-5 defeat. Tenerife Hammers A were also kept honest before beating Peacocks by the same score. Palms A, with an eye on third place, are going nicely, as the 9-3 win at Toscales A showed, while Phoenix Potters stumbled to a home draw against lowly Terrace Bar B. Dreamers were too strong for La Caña (93), while Terrace A and Phoenix Knights will both be disappointed to have drawn on Amarilla Golf. Another week and an-

other pair of wins for runaway leaders Next Door, whose latest victims were Exiles B and Hoppys Bar. But Hoppys still picked up another win, this time at fellow new boys Bluebell B. Again, Bluebell also tasted victory - and it was a prize scalp. They were full value for the 7-5er over Palms Bar B. Treehouse A won the derby against their B team 9-3, and Inn The Pink B were victorious at James Place, who seem to have lost their winning mentality. Bluebell A defeated Tenerife Pool Tables, while girl power earned Toscales B a point at Bar 13. Laura completed her first-ever hat trick as she beat Squid, and then did Scott twice! The cup draw sees Gaffers A on the road, and they have a tricky tie at Exiles A. Tenerife Hammers A beat Palms A 7-5 in the last round and are rewarded with a home tie
1st February - 7th February 2013
The last match in this half of the competition pitched Ourplace Naturals with a home tie against Palms Sports bar A. A real ding-dong tussle between the top two in Division 1 looked on the cards, but it was not to be. Despite maximums from Nathan and Jamie, Palms were soon 4-0 up. Game over! Match of the round in the John Lowe Plate came at Gaffers B, who
entertained The Rebels. At 3-3, a dramatic last-leg shoot-out in the second doubles rubber saw Rebels’ Carl just miss double top, and Gaffers’ Paul hit double one! Yet another 4-3 result came at The Pub. They went through to the last four with a hard-fought victory over Vikings Ensecan, Paul hitting a 180 on the way to help overcome the 130-point handicap.
