Tragic fire overshadows Carnival Queen election
SANTA CRUZ crowned its Carnival Queen on Wednesday night, amid a fearful scene of tragedy backstage. Even as 21-year-old Soraya Rodríguez Castro was elected Queen, fellow-contestant Saida Maria Prieto had already been rushed to hospital with severe burns after her costume caught fire. It was thought that the blaze was a result of pyrotechnics, attached to the dress of another competitor standing behind her, being accidentally ignited. Some kind of flare was incorporated into the mock cannons on the costume worn by Magnolia Cruz, representing Radio Club Tenerife. It completely overshadowed the threehour televised gala, in the Recinto Ferial, and though the show went on - much against some people’s wishes - the activities were suspended yesterday (Thursday). A decision on the fate of the activities today (Friday) had not been taken as we went to press last night. Tragic Saida, who is believed to have suffered first and second-degree burns affecting 50% of her body, was initially taken to the HUC (Hospital Universitario de Canarias). But she was transferred to a mainland specialist burns unit in Seville’s Hospital Virgen del Rocio under police escort yesterday afternoon. Her parents, accompanied by Santa Cruz Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez, a family friend, travelled there afterwards in a separate aircraft. Four other people were also treated for burns during the incident, including design-
ers Víctor Manuel Díaz Lladó and María Carolina Hernández Padrón, who were injured helping to free Saida. A spokesman from Santa Cruz Town Hall told Canarian Weekly, “It’s a very hard day for us. “Our thoughts are with Saida and her fam-
ily, and activities today (Thursday) have been suspended. A decision will be made later as to whether Friday’s activities will take place. He added: “A full police investigation is now underway.” The Hospital Universitario de Canarias told Spanish reporters the
family had requested that no information be given out publicly regarding the Saida’s progress. Meanwhile Chloe Garcia Poole, who has an English mother and Canarian Father, was runner-up. She was crowned Miss Costa Adeje back in 2008.
STOP PRESS: as we go to print, Santa Cruz town hall have announced that the opening event, Cabalgata, has been suspended today, Friday 8th February. Future carnival activities will depend on the progress of Saida Prieto. 8th February - 14th February 2013

Rajoy battles to beat claims of corruption
MARIANO RAJOY, accused of accepting illegal cash payments before he became Spanish Prime Minister, is fighting to save his career. Nearly one million people have signed an online petition calling for him to step down, amid widespread protests. It follows the PP (Popular Party) corruption scandal, in which top-ranking party officials were said to have taken “bungs” over a 12-year period. Opinion polls show that 77% believe he is no longer fit to lead
One million people vote to ditch their Prime Minister
the country, while 54% believe there should be a General Election. Opposition leader Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba has demanded that Rajoy be grilled in Congress about the allegations. Former PP deputy Jorge Trias Sagnier and five other former senior officials have already confirmed that party leaders received bungs. And Spain’s chief state prosecutor confirms there could be enough evidence to investigate, forcing the PP to conduct an internal audit. But an indignant Rajoy has pledged to clear his name next week online by publishing his
income tax return, and declaration of personal wealth, on the Moncloa Palace website. The Prime Minister, who has denied the claims as “totally false”, has promised to provide “everything necessary for the truth to be made absolutely clear”. Among the other politicians accused of taking bribes are current General
Secretary Maria Delores Cospedal, Senate President Pio Garcia Escudero and even former Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar. The money was allegedly taken from a 22-million-euro slush fund, hidden in a Swiss bank account controlled by former party treasurer Luis Barcenas. Barcenas is said to
An evening of clairvoyance
GARY Dakin, a psychic medium from Ashtonunder-lyne, is performing at Showtime, Karting las Americas on Friday 22nd February. But hurry, if you want to go don’t do the typical Tenerife trick of waiting until the last minute to get tickets, there are literally only a few left even though the event is two weeks away. Canarian Weekly spoke to Gary to find out what all the furore is about seeing a psychic, as people have been flocking to purchase tickets. He explained, “My show is an open demonstration of clairvoyance with me stood on a stage in full view of everyone and there’s a roving mike in
Page 4
the audience. I explain what a medium is and then as the evening goes on I’ll get messages through to me and I’ll tell the audience, I then ask them to put their hand up if it means something to them.” The 53 year-old was keen to point out it’s not the intention to embarrass or upset anyone, it’s not that type of show, even
though the evening will have humourous elements, ironically there is, at times, humour in death as we rekindle memories of events past. Gary’s exhibition crosses over and links the past with the present, spiritually. There’s nothing to be frightened of, the furniture won’t be flying through the air etc. This is Gary’s full-
time job, but he sees it as a vocation, “a passage to educate” as opposed to a day to day job. His gift shall we call it is always with him, but he has learnt to turn it on and off, otherwise it would drive him insane. His medium capabilities take on different guises gleaning information visually, aurally and through the sense of smell. To unwind he’s an avid cricket fan and dare we say it a fan on Downton Abbey. Now obviously there are some skeptics out there and Gary’s message to them is this, “My aim is not to convince any one, but if one person goes away from the event believing then I consider my job done” If you’ve already got your tickets then enjoy, if you want to go then get your tickets as soon as possible.
have kept secret ledgers of money received between 1990 and 2008 from donors, including companies, and these, allegedly, reveal the payments to Rajoy. The notebooks, published by Spanish newspaper El Pais last weekend, show that the Prime Minister was allegedly paid 25,200 euros each year, between 1999-2008. Until 2007, Spanish political parties were allowed to receive anonymous donations, but the ledgers were kept from 1990 to 2009. The PP has threatened to sue those making the allegations, describing the entire business as a smear campaign. But despite the denials, even Rajoy appeared to indicate there was some truth in the allegations, in a cryptic answer to a journalist’s question at a press conference in Berlin. “Everything that refers to me, and that appears there, and to some of my fellow party members that appear there, is not right, except for something that the media has published,” he said. Barcenas, said to have controlled the slush fund, has already stepped down from his role as party treasurer after being implicated in the Gurtel corruption scandal, in Valencia. The case involves the alleged awarding of construction contracts by the regional government, in exchange for cash donations. Between 2002 and 2004, secret cash payments of 600,000 euros were made to Barcenas in exchange for public contracts for construction firm Constructora Hispanica. But he put just 114,000 euros through the PP books as political donations. The rest is alleged to have been put into a central pot, which was then distributed by Barcenas and fellow treasurer
Alvaro Lapuerta as back-handers to senior PP officials. A total of 120m euros, paid into the fund by a group of businessmen led by Francisco Correa, is believed to have gone undeclared. The payment scandal looms large against a backdrop of severe austerity, spending cuts and an unemployment rate of 26% in the country. It also comes as Spain tries increasingly hard to raise taxes and penalise middle-class earners. At a meeting of the PP’s Executive Board, Rajoy said he wanted the party “to operate with the utmost transparency, complete thoroughness and absolute formality”. He added, forcefully: “And that is how it will be. The truth will be made absolutely clear, and we will take every step necessary to ensure that no shadow of doubt remains over this issue.” Mr Rajoy stressed: ”Never, I repeat, never, have I received or distributed undeclared money, either within this party or elsewhere. “The Government of Spain has a clear course set and we will not see ourselves diverted.” The Prime Minister added: “We are on the right path. I am aware that the fruits of our labour are not yet apparent, but they will be because the seeds have been sown. “They have not been sown haphazardly but rather meticulously, with great effort and great sacrifice.” Finally, Mariano Rajoy said: “I will continue working to live in a country where evidence and courts are necessary to judge, sentence and condemn. “The shadow of a hint of a manipulated clue cannot be used to strip any Spaniard of his presumed innocence. “It simply cannot. If that were the case, we would end up living in an uninhabitable country.”

THIS Tuesday, 12th February, is Shrove Tuesday (also known as Pancake Tuesday, Pancake Day, Mardi Gras, and Fat Tuesday). It’s the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, and the Shrove Tuesday date is linked to Easter, so it changes annually and is slightly earlier this year. The actual word “shrove” is the past tense of the English verb “shrive”, which means to obtain absolution for one’s sins by way of Confession and doing penance. Shrove Tuesday is said to get its name from the custom for Christians to be “shriven” before the start of Lent. Pancakes have always been associated with the day before Lent because it was the way to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before Lent’s 40-day fasting season. In many cultures, this means no meat, dairy, or eggs. On Pancake Day, it is customary in many countries to eat pancakes as a dessert. In the United Kingdom, Shrove Tuesday is observed as a tradition, and the most famous pancake race takes place at Olney in Buckinghamshire, where it has been held since 1445. The contestants, tra-
ditionally women, carry a frying pan and race over a 415-yard course to the finishing line. The rules are strict: contestants have to toss their pancake at both the start and the finish, as well as wear an apron and a scarf. Pancake Day even features in the Guinness Book of Records: the record for the most people tossing pancakes together is 890, achieved at an event organised by the University of Sheffield on 15th February last year. Although over 1,500 people signed up for the event online, a total of 930 participants attended. The highest pancake-toss on record, measuring 9.47m (31ft 1in), was achieved by Dominic Cuzzacrea (USA) at Walden Galleria Mall in Cheektowaga, New York, on 13th November 2010. He beat his own previous record by 30cm (11.8in). If you’re looking for a simple pancake recipe, then go to www.deliaonline.com for all the ingredients and instructions on how to make them. Enjoy. Until next week…

The Mayor and the Councillor for Tourism of the Municipality, José Francisco Nino and Evelin Santos, respectively, announced that this year the municipality will launch a new mobile application containing all the Municipality information required by both travellers and residents alike, and that “it will become the municipality’s official guide for mobile devices.” Evelin Santos explained that “these initiatives are integrated into policies and strategies of the
Tourist Board, and it is encouraging investment in actions that contribute to the final integration of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) in destination management, making the study of current trends in tourism promotion in a primary objective and a challenge to use new technologies to adapt to constant change and evolution that is experiencing the tourism sector in particular and society in general “. This new tool, which is currently being developed, will be available, in principle, in Castilian, English and German, “although it is disseminated into
other languages, such as Russian or Chinese.” The application is designed especially for tablets and smartphones, both Apple platforms and Android devices, and it is intended “to make information available to users and a multimedia gallery with pictures and videos about the products and tourism resources of the municipality of Arona: beaches, natural areas and trails, monuments, water sports, golf, cultural centres, theme parks, festivals and concerts, as well as the accommodation offer of hotels, cottages, campsites

Ministers fight to curb electric bills THE Spanish Government is battening down the hatches to prevent yet another national increase in electricity bills, Industry Minister José Manuel Soria says the Government is preparing to approve a series of emergency measures. It is applying for credit amounting to 2.2 billion euros, and it will also bring in a new draft law, or Royal Decree, to change the way the costs of regulated electricity-based activities are reviewed. Changes will be made
to various means, such as transport, distribution, energy supplies off the mainland, and special premium rates, which should save up to 340 million euros. This will avoid yet another saga in the series of electricity bill hikes which households and businesses have seen in the last four years or so. The cost of electrical energy and its production has rocketed over the last few months, even though demand has fallen. To this end, says Soria,

the Government wants a radical reform of all aspects of industry, power, technology and science by investing heavily in Investigation and Development (I+D). He adds that ministers will now channel I+D towards challenges presented by changes in society, and the current social and economic climate, instead of by sector as it has done to date. This, they hope, will bring Spain’s pace of innovation in line with other EU member States.

TV’s Jeremy bounces back TELEVISION star Jeremy Kyle was back in business this week after winning his battle against testicular cancer. The TV presenter returned to host his controversial talk show, and receiving a standing ovation from his studio audience in Manchester. The host, who has now been given the allclear, broke down in tears as he described his emotions. “It wasn’t the best Christmas for me and the family,” he said. It has been the hardest two months of my life. “I have had absolutely amazing support. Thank you all - it is overwhelming really.” Kyle was diagnosed with the disease just before Christmas. But after receiving chemotherapy and
having the problem testicle removed, he was pronounced clear. He spent a short time in Dubai to recover before returning to the UK with his wife, Carla Germaine, and three children. After being cheered by the audience, the 47-year-old cracked a joke and pledged to get back to doing what he does best. “And just so you know, I only have one testicle left,” he said. “But I’ve got a false one and it only cost £289.99. “So that’s it. You’ve seen Jeremy Kyle get emotional. Now I’ll just get back to shouting at people.” No wonder he was so upbeat, having got it off his chest, because doctors had warned him that he could have died within 18 months had the lump remained unchecked. He told The Sun newspaper: “I feel
lucky that I’m here for my family and can see my kids grow up. To be honest, I thought, ‘That’s it, I’m dead’.” Kyle has hosted his TV programme for 7½ years, putting dysfunctional relationships in the spotlight, and he has been criticised extensively for glorifying “broken Britain”. Yet the ITV show was recently nominated in the National Television Awards in the Best Daytime TV Show category, but it missed out to BBC’s This Morning. Kyle was a salesman before his move into broadcasting, where he began by hosting programmes in local radio. In his autobiography I’m Only Being Honest, the twice-married presenter talked about how he suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The 45-year-old former England, Newcastle Tottenham, Rangers and Lazio forward, nicknamed Gazza, has “willingly” been admitted to the £6,000-a-week Meadows Centre. The tab, and his firstclass flight there, is being funded by his celebrity pals, who fear for his life after a mammoth bender last week, which thrust him into the spotlight again for all the wrong reasons. He appeared unwell and shaking during a charity appearance in Northampton, where he broke down and wept on stage in front of an audience of fans. A statement his management company, GamePlan Solutions, read: “Alcoholic Paul Gascoigne has been experiencing a tough time of late. “He has been asking for help and has willingly

been admitted to a treatment centre. He has complex issues that are being dealt with by professionals. “Paul has been extremely touched and overwhelmed by the generous offers of help and support over the past few days. “He is motivated to fully understand and control his addiction problem under guidance.” Clarke Carlisle, chairman of the Professional Footballers Association, said on Radio 4’s Today Programme: “We’ll continue to give him our full support because that’s what we’re here for. We have been in touch with his friends, his advisers, and agents and we will do again.” His descent, from the heights of being the most revered player in topflight English football to the gutter, is one of football’s most heartwrenching stories. Gary Lineker, his former England and Tottenham team-mate, wrote on Twitter that he was struggling to see a
positive outcome. “I can only hope he finds peace somehow, but fear those hopes may be forlorn.” Frank Lampard, the England and Chelsea midfielder, told ITV news how his “idol” Gascoigne had looked after him as a young player. “I was lucky enough to be involved in Euro 96 with him as a kid, and he took me under his wing,” he said. “I was completely in awe of his character, how much he was joking around and, more than that, the quality of his football. Whatever anyone says about Paul Gascoigne, he was my hero and he’ll always be that.” Less than two months ago, Gazza told a Scottish newspaper how healthy he felt, and how he had thrown himself into a tough exercise regime. He was described as “glowing with health and happiness” as he talked about how great his life was now that he was off the booze after completing a rehab course last summer.

Boom time for holiday firms SUMMER sales at Tui Travel, Europe’s largest tour operator, have improved 4% from last year, and January bookings were 2% up.
And a 9% increase in UK summer bookings, together with10% in Nordic countries, helped counteract falling demand in France and Germany. Tui Travel, parent company of Thomson and First Choice, added that about one-third of its mainstream summer holidays had already been sold, raising hopes of higher full-year profits. Despite its strong bookings, however, the British company reported a 12% increase in pre-tax losses to
£178m in the last quarter of 2012. And revenue at Tui Travel, which returned to the FTSE 100 index in December, slipped 4% to £2.7bn. Chief Executive Peter Long said: “Our leading position in
the UK has further benefited from increased market share as a result of higher demand for our unique holidays. “Across all our key markets, demand for the overseas holiday remains strong, despite
the overall economic environment. “We are confident that our customer-focused strategy is driving performance and, based on current trading, we expect 7-10% underlying operating profit growth
for the 2013 financial year.” Elsewhere, there was good news as rivals Thomas Cook announced that its turnaround plan was was “firmly on track”. The world’s oldest travel group, which has been struggling since the start of the downturn, also reported improving UK sales. Pre-tax loss in the three months to the end of 2012 was £151.7m, which was more than 15% down on losses in the same period the previous year. Thomas Cook has issued a string of profit warnings in the past two years, forcing the company to renegotiate its bank loans. But fortunes have been improving since new chief executive Harriet Green, an industry outsider, was
installed in May., She has engineered huge cuts to the firm’s debts, including the sale of its Indian business and several Spanish hotels. Winter and summer bookings were in-line with expectations, and Ms Green added: “We have seen stronger operating performances in our major markets the UK, Germany and the Nordics. “I am particularly pleased with the improved performance in the UK, as the benefits of the turnaround plan are reflected in its operating results. “We have further strengthened our leadership team, and the pace at which we are driving change gives me confidence that together, we will achieve our near-term objectives - and much more!”
Phone Free Zone
DAYBREAK has launched a Phone Free Zone campaign to encourage the nation not to use their mobile phones while driving.
- More than 1 in 3 motorists have used their phone while driving. - Worst offending area is East Midlands. More than 1 in 3 (39.5%) motorists have used their mobile phones while driving, a survey commissioned for Daybreak has found. OnePoll surveyed 2,000 motorists from around
Page 10
the UK to discover whether drivers were still using their phones while driving despite it being dangerous. The survey was commissioned to coincide with the launch of a campaign on Daybreak called Phone Free Zone, encouraging motorists not to use their phones completely while driving. At least 128 people have lost their lives since 2006 in road traffic accidents where mobiles phones have been a contributing factor. As well as not using a handheld phone when driving, Daybreak viewers can pledge their support by picking up
one of 50,000 Phone Free Zone window stickers from participating Shell garages. The survey results also revealed one in ten drivers (11.6% ) had used their phone while driving with children in the car and the three worst offending areas for drivers using mobiles were the East Midlands (49.15%) Northern Ireland (47.83%) and West Midlands (47.87%). Just under 5% (4.45%) of drivers surveyed admitted to having had an accident whilst using their phone and driving. One in four drivers (22.70%) said they had been distracted from
driving safely by their mobile phone and 19.65% had written a message on their phone such as a text, email or used Facebook or Twitter while driving. Around a quarter (25.35%) of drivers said they would always use a hands free kit when driving but 15.5% of drivers said they had taken their hands off the steering wheel to use their phone while driving. Nearly three quarters of all drivers polled (74.6% ) said they thought the roads would be safer if all motorists switched off their phone before driving.
More snow is forecast across UK THE UK is bracing itself for more snow over the next few days.
Scotland is going to get it on Friday, but snow is likely to reach southern areas over the weekend. But, snow is expected to cover from Carlisle to Southampton could be ice on untreated surfaces. Temperatures will struggle to reach
anything above 4C and some areas will feel like minus four due to the wind chill factor. The South West and the South East look set to escape the snow altogether and temperatures will be much warmer - up to a maximum of 9C in parts of Devon and Cornwall. Hopefully by Monday evening the snow will be confined mostly to the North East.

The Car-Park King! THE skeleton found under a Leicester council car park was this week confirmed as that of the 15th Century’s King Richard III.
Richard III’s skeleton is identified in Leicester
A facial reconstruction of the monarch, who died in the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 has been released by the Richard III Society. The image is based on a CT scan taken by experts at Leicester University, who discovered the skeleton during an archaeological dig last September with the help of the society. The bones were uncovered in the remains of the choir of the medieval Greyfriars Church, where King Richard was buried in 1485, and which now lies under a social services car park in the city. The facial reconstruction was unveiled on Monday at The Society of Antiquaries at Burl-

ington House in Piccadilly, London. Researchers concluded “beyond reasonable doubt” that the skeleton, which showed evidence of an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine, was the monarch. And DNA samples from Michael Ibsen, a Canadian-born furniture-maker who is a direct descendant of
Richard’s sister, Anne of York, provided added assurance. The skeleton, showing severe trauma to the skull and an arrow in the back, was unearthed on the first day of a threeweek dig at the site last August. Historical records show the long-lost church was the burial site of the monarch,
following his brutal death in the War of the Roses, at the battle of Bosworth Field in 1485. The royal remains were found in good condition at a depth of just over two feet. The hands were crossed over the front of the pelvis, and there was no evidence of a coffin or shroud. The remains will now be reinterred at Leicester Cathedral, the nearest consecrated ground, in keeping with archaeological practice. Shakespeare portrayed Richard III as a hunchbacked tyrant, but modern historians argue that the king was the victim of Tudor propaganda. His brief reign, from 1483, saw liberal reforms, including the introduction of the right to bail and the lifting of restrictions on books and printing presses. Richard III was the last Plantagenet monarch, a Yorkist defeated by Henry Tudor, who became Henry VII.

Startling £1m weekly cost to UK taxpayers BRITISH taxpayers are forking out more than £1 million a week in benefits to thousands upon thousands of children living abroad.
This debt, say campaigners, is dropped on them by immigrant families in the UK, who are claiming for their offspring legitimately. The Migration Watch UK research follows the Government admission that nearly 30,000 families are claiming benefits and tax credits for 50,000 kids, living outside the UK but within the European Union, as well as in Iceland and Norway. It costs the UK taxpayer £55m a year to fund this system, which
is replicated in four other EU countries only - 22 nations require the child to be resident in order to qualify. Migration Watch UK chairman Sir Andrew Green said: “It is absurd that child benefit is paid to children who do not even live in the UK. “At a time when UK taxpayers are being asked to tighten their belts, the Government is paying out over £1m per week to support children in other countries where costs are, in any case, often much lower. “The majority of EU countries have the good sense to ensure that the child in question must be resident in that country in order to qualify, and it is about time the UK did the same.” Poland houses the
highest number of children in the regions receiving UK benefits, with more than half the total, 25,659, receiving welfare. Child benefit in the UK is worth £81.20 per month for the first child and £53.60 for the second and subsequent children. This is about four times higher than Polish rates.
Migration Watch calculates that child benefits paid to 40,171 children living overseas costs the UK £36.6m per year, while child tax credit adds up to an annual £18.6m. The Czech Republic, Germany, Latvia and the Netherlands also allow child benefit to be paid for children living elsewhere in the EU.
These shocking revelations in Britain will add to concerns about the impact of an anticipated wave of immigration to the UK from Romania and Bulgaria in 2014, when temporary controls lapse at the end of the year. While Migration Watch that could amount to as many as 50,000 people a year in the first five years, the UK Government have so far declined to publish their own estimate. A further headache could ensue from within the one million Romanians now in Spain, of whom some 30% of workers were unemployed in 2011. Even with access to unemployment pay on the mainland, their benefits would run out after one year.
It means that there is a significant risk of them moving to Britain, where access to benefits depends solely on “habitual residence” which is easily acquired. Sir Andrew added: “It is not good enough to duck making an estimate of immigration from Romania and Bulgaria. “The overall influx is likely to have significant consequences for housing and public services. It will also add further to the competition which young British workers already face.” A HMRC spokeswoman says EU rules allow EEA nationals to claim child benefit if they meet the relevant conditions, and pay compulsory National Insurance contributions.

TripAdvisor®, has just announced the winners of its 2013 Travellers’ Choice Awards for the Most Romantic Hotels, honouring the most romantic hotels in the UK, Europe and the world. “With the most romantic time of the year fast approaching, these awards recognise the hotels that couples rate highest in the romance stakes. It’s great to see two British hotels in the world top 10 rivaling the likes of famously romantic destinations such as Italy and the Maldives,” said Emma Shaw TripAdvisor spokesperson. Delia has closed the book on TV career AFTER winning millions of people over on TV for the past 40 years, Delia Smith has waved goodbye to her small-screen career. The 71-year-old cookery expert, who began with her Family Fare programme in 1973, believes programme-makers are more interested in entertainment than education these days. Delia, one of the most popular TV food celebrities of all, has also sold millions of cookbooks and will continue teaching people to cook via online lessons. “This is the future for me and the population,” she told the Daily Telegraph. “If you do a TV programme now, it’s got to entertain.
“When I started, there was further education in the BBC. But now, I have someone telling me I haven’t got time to show this or I haven’t got time to show that.” The Norwich City director, and also a huge football fan, turned down a recent approach from the BBC to return to the channel, spelling the end to her telly days. Her colourful career saw her dubbed “Saint Delia” because of her reliable, easy-to-follow recipes. The cookery books, including Delia Smith’s Complete Cookery Course and How to Cheat at Cooking, have sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. And then there’s “The Delia Effect”, so called because when products were featured on her shows, sales of

supermarket stocks went sky-high. She was credited
with causing a national cranberry shortage in 1995, and she also
transformed the fortunes of a small Lancashire company when she described their omelette pan as a “little gem”.It led to sales rocketing up by thousands in just a few months. Delia was awarded the OBE in 1995 for her services to sports and culinary literature, and the CBE four years later in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for her services to the Food Industry. Her best-known TV slot - an unscheduled appearance came during a Norwich football match at Carrow Road in 2005. She attracted huge attention during the half-time break of their clash against Manchester City, when Norwich were fighting what was to be an unsuccessful battle for
Premier League safety. She grabbed the microphone from the club announcer on the pitch at half-time in an effort to rally the crowd, saying: “A message for the best football supporters in the world: we need a 12th man here. “Where are you? Where are you? “Let’s be ’avin’ you! Come on!” Norwich went on to lose 3-2 and Delia, who appeared to be slightly the worst for wear, denied newspaper hints that she might have had a few too many. It was excellent halftime entertainment, and it will certainly have gained her a new fan club. And for all the chefs and cooks featured on TV over the years, Delia’s absence will almost certainly be noticed above all others.

Stricken HMV to lose 66 stores MORE than onethird of HMV’s 220 UK stores will be closed in the wake of the entertainment retailer’s collapse. It amounts to 930 redundancies, although joint administrators handling the bankrupt firm say the stores will continue to trade for now. But the closures will be enforced in the next month or two. “We have now completed a review of the store portfolio and have identified 66 loss-making stores for closure,” said Nick Edwards, for the administrators. “This step has been taken in order to enhance the prospects of securing the business’s future as a going concern. “We continue to receive strong support from staff, and are extremely grateful
to them for their commitment during an understandablydifficult period.” The company called in administrators early last month following dreadful Christmas sales, which left them with overall debts of almost £200m and jeopardised 4,000 jobs. And HMV was just one of three well-known high-street firms to bow to the onslaught of online sales outlets. The administrators soon announced that they would not honour gift vouchers and cards - many bought as Xmas presents - but performed a smart about-turn following a storm of protests from consumers. Hilco UK, a retail restructuring group, has now taken over HMV’s debt and is now, effectively, in control of the administratormanaged chain.
Cat is new cream of Monopoly crop FOR the first time in Monopoly history, fans have had a say in which token to eliminate and which piece to replace it. And toy-maker Hasbro has announced that they have voted, via Facebook, to stop the iron token from passing “Go” any more, replacing it with a cat. Players are signified by eight tokens, which have changed a lot since Parker Brothers bought the board game from its original designer in 1935. The online contest
Page 16
to change the tokens was sparked by chatter on Facebook, where Monopoly has more than 10 million followers. The iron, wheelbarrow and shoe were neck-andneck for elimination in the final hours of voting as fans from more than 120 countries vied to win the “Save Your Token” campaign The tokens were introduced when game creator Charles Darrow’s niece suggested using trinkets from her charm bracelet.
Dogs chipped! NEW legislation to make microchipping compulsory for all dogs in England in 2016 has been welcomed by animal charities and vets alike.
The Government believes it will help reunite owners with lost or stolen pets, as well as improve the animals’welfare. Ministers also announced plans to extend legal protection over dog attacks to cover incidents on private property. The changes will cheer postmen and women, health visitors and others who call at private addresses, who are not currently covered by the law if they are bitten. Environment Secretary Owen Paterson said: “It’s ludicrous that in a nation of dog-lovers, thousands of dogs are roaming the streets or stuck in kennels because the owners cannot be tracked down.” He added: “I am determined to put an
end to this, and ease the pressure on charities and councils to find new homes for these dogs. “Micro-chipping is a simple solution that gives peace of mind to owners. It makes it easier to get their pet back if it strays, and easier to trace if it is stolen. “The generous support of Dogs Trust means this valuable service will be offered free to pet-owners across the country.” Around 110,000 stray dogs are picked up by police, local authorities and animal-welfare charities in Britain each year. But about half of them are not reunited
with their owners because they cannot be identified. Around 6,000 dogs are put down annually, while strays cost the taxpayer and welfare charities £57m a year. Thousands of postal workers, and hundreds of telecoms engineers, are attacked by dogs every year, mainly on private property such as gardens, drives and private roads. The RSPCA, though acknowledging the news, cautioning that further preventative measures were needed to improve animal welfare. David Bowles, head of the charity group’s
public affairs, said: “Compulsory microchipping and extending the law to cover private property as well as public spaces is a welcome move. “However, on their own, we don’t believe they will make owners more responsible, or ensure that fewer dogs bite people or other animals.” But Billy Hayes, Communication Workers Union general secretary, said: “Extending the law to private property will bring protection to hundreds of thousands of people who work on private land.” The Royal Mail revealed that more than 3,000 postmen and women were attacked by dogs in the year to April 2011. Sir Gordon Langley, who led an inquiry into dog attacks for Royal Mail, said: “The extent and frequency of attacks on postal workers is a matter of considerable concern. “The inadequacies of the present law are apparent and these changes, while long overdue, are very welcome.”
Drinkers add that special sparkle
AT LAST! One industry will be putting the fizz back into Britain over the next five years. That’s because, over the next five years, the UK will be the world’s biggest importer of champagne and sparkling wine. The changing drinking habits of millions will see us ease off on the still wine and add some sparkle to our lives instead. A new survey, conducted by Vinexpo and commissioned by International Wine and Spirit Research (IWSR), estimates the UK will overtake Germany in that period to take the top spot. British drinkers are set to polish off more than 126 million bottles of French Champagne, Spanish Cava and Italian Prosecco by 2018. They will also get through double the volume of English sparkling wine as they
splash their way through nearly six million bottles. Global consumption of English sparkling wine is also growing, and will have increased by a whopping 342% in the 10 years leading up to 2017. Strawberry Hill Vineyard in Newent, Gloucestershire, produces an award-winning sparkling wine, and owner Tim Chance
is able to adapt what he produces to meet demand. “We grow Pinot Noir grapes, which have a red skin but produce a clear juice,” he said. “It means we make red wine from it and sparkling white wine, so it’s easy to evolve our business as consumers’ preferences change.” But sparkling wine is more expensive to
make. “This involves a secondary fermentation process, so it takes longer, is more labourintensive and, therefore, more costly,” he added. “So we charge more for it.” Experts say the cost of sparkling wines has been coming down, making it more affordable. And the quality, particularly of English varieties, has improved in recent years, adding to its popularity. Yet the consumption of red and white wine overall is in long-term decline, and the value of UK wine sales is expected to fall in the next five years from £8.2bn to £7.9bn. Nevertheless, the UK is still the world’s biggest retail market for imported wine, although China and Russia have the fastestgrowing import market in that sector.

There’s fresh hope for stray cats and kittens CATS AID, an independent association, have been working to help stray and abandoned cats and kittens here in the South since 2008. The movement began when a small group of animal lovers in Adeje, surprised at the number of cats they saw eating from bins and outside restaurants, joined forces. They soon learned through various media sources that there were large numbers of animals in general being dumped, abandoned or left to suffer. But they were surprised at how little emphasis seemed to be put on the issue of stray and abandoned cats going un-neutered. The group consist of a handful of volunteers and supporters and, as yet, they have no one in a position to work on publicity or fundraising. Pamela, one of the leading lights, said: “Despite working for the animals for the past four years or so, we have only recently been officially
inscribed in the Register of Associations in Tenerife. “We are hesitant to use the word ‘charity’ to describe ourselves as this term seems to be bandied about a lot, unqualified, in Tenerife’s animal-welfare world. “We are a non-profit association, and we work to castrate and reduce the suffering of strays and abandoned cats. “We try to find homes for cats and kittens in need, and we maintain selected colonies of
cats, all castrated. One prime example is the colony based in Puerto Colon.”. She stressed that they do not have a refuge and have no real facilities, but added: “We always have some cats and kittens in need of homes. And we have dealt with cats from as far as Guia de Isora to Golf Del Sur. “Funding is largely from our own pockets at the moment, and we receive donations from one or two regular
contributors. “In time, we hope to work on generating financial support from the public in the form of small monthly donations. But for now, we pretty much fund the work ourselves. “We are looking forward to growing in the future, and we have excellent relationships with several wonderful vets, all of whom are wellexperienced, seasoned animal lovers.” Right now, the association have several beautiful kittens, all micro-chipped and vaccinated, in need of homes. Afternoon delight for Shiva and Co. Accion del Sol refuge news
A FUND-RAISING Afternoon Tea Party on Sunday at Accion del Sol’s Granadilla refuge provided a fun-filled afternoon for dogs and humans alike. Despite the windy conditions and a chill in the air, the event attracted a fine turnout of adults and children, and lots of the dogs available for adoption joined in the merriment and games. They thoroughly enjoyed an afternoon of love and attention, and none more so than Shiva, who has been at the refuge longer than most
and craves a new home. All the dogs taking part in the Talent Show were happy to show off their talents, which included tricks, dancing and much more. The cake stall was groaning under the weight of temptation in all shapes and sizes, and there were even handmade special doggie biscuits! Four dance groups kept everyone entertained, so a big thank-you to all 35 dancers who participated, and to all the many staff and supporters for making the day so successful.

Canarian Weekly this week, was privileged to meet up with Fernando Ballesteros, Councillor and President of the Organismo Autonomo de Fiestas y Actividades recreativas – in other words: Carnival Organiser.
It was great for a busy person such as Ballesteros to find time in his diary to talk about his passion for the Carnival. A lawyer by profession, Tenerifean by birth, he will be in the post for four years only, so now he is halfway through his term. He told Canarian Weekly, “I was born 15 metres from the
centre of the carnival. It’s in my blood, I’ve grown up with it and this is a job I’ve always wanted.” You can see how his eyes light up as he talks animatedly about carnival 2013, saying: “It’s very hard, it’s wonderful, the best area in the council. Above all, it’s so diverse that you get the pleasure of meeting so many
different people.” He’s on a sabbatical for four years from practising law so that he can give his all to arranging the carnival, which isn’t an easy task if you consider the logistics involved. “The planning carries on throughout the year,” he said. “There are groups planning now for 2014, even before this one has finished.”

www.canarianweekly.com There is a core 50 people who work fulltime on the fiestas in Santa Cruz. They have a wealth of knowledge and experience gained from previous years festivities, so they know the best way to do things. The Fiestas office is in an area called “La Noria” (Carnival Street) as many of the groups are situated in buildings in the surrounding area. Some 6,000 people take part in the groups, featuring everything from performing to choreography. And each night, over 230,000 people will flood into the capital to enjoy the festivities. The investment made in Carnival is approximately 2.3 million euros, but as to the revenue the capital gains, it’s difficult to quantify. But with an event that’s second in size only to Rio, it definitely has some positive payback. A recent study showed

that the island received back thirty times the investment in publicity. Canarian Weekly asked Ballesteros what was his favourite part of the carnival? He replied: “the people, the way they enjoy Carnival and the party. “They just want to have fun, and there’s no trouble. Because it is transferred through generations, you know to respect carnival.” We concluded by asking whether he had one message to offer to people visiting the carnival. “Arrive dressed in costume to get into the spirit of the event, whether it’s a hat, your face painted or full costume, to be included,” he said promptly. If you’re thinking of visiting the Bollywood-themed carnival, there are buses from the South. More information is available from www.titsa.com.

My Big Fat Gypsy Valentine Monday 11th February, Channel 4, 21.00 Big Fat Gypsy Weddings returns with its most romantic reincarnation yet - a brand new one off Valentines special exploring love and courtship in the Traveller community. The programme meets a group of girls still enthralled with the idea of fairytale romance. In the Traveller world it is still common to marry young and both the brides in this episode are 16-year-olds marrying their first loves. But can the dream of a white wedding live up to the reality? And can the magic of the big day survive in the months and years afterwards? Ina Casey is a 16-yearold (now 17) Traveller marrying her first boyfriend. Having got together in secret they were ‘outed’ by her uncle who “squealed”, and were quickly engaged. Now we meet Ina as she prepares for her wedding day. No stone has been left
unturned - Ina is wearing an outfit made from “glitter fabric”-material more commonly used in wallpaper. Ina also has grand plans for her seven bridesmaids, but she is keeping the details a secret - even from the bridesmaids themselves - meaning all the girls must be strictly blindfolded during the dress fittings. Despite her relative youth, Ina is convinced she has met “the one”. As she points out “some people have to kiss 100 frogs to get their prince, I only had to kiss one” But as the wedding draws nearer the reality of leaving her family to start a new life begins to kick in and on the big day itself, the emotions come flooding out. Ina’s cousin and Maid of Honour is 18-year-old Estella. As she points out “you spend half your life playing with Barbie dolls and the other half trying to look like one”, but unlike Ina, Estella
is in no hurry to settle down just yet. This Valentine’s special also catches up with Travellers Danielle, 15 (now 16), and her 21-year-old fiancé Brendan as they prepare for their wedding day. Having met her one true love Danielle is desperate to start her new life with her man and the wedding is scheduled to take place just a day after her 16th birthday. Despite her youth Danielle is convinced she has made the right choice: “People think that I’m 15 and I don’t know what love is”, she says “but he’s perfect for me and hopefully I’m
perfect for him” In the last series Danielle celebrated her hen night wearing a tutu lit with fairy lights. This time it is Brendan’s turn to gather his friends and family and celebrate his stag do with a spot of hunting. Too afraid to go to a pub before the wedding in case he gets into a fight, Brendan and his friends sing songs, drink around a campfire and reminisce about what Traveller life used to be like. Nevertheless a cloud hangs over the happy couple. Brendan is due to appear in court charged with receiving stolen goods.

Argyll Rainforest. In Argyll, on the west coast of Scotland, Ray is exploring one of the planet's rarest habitats - temperate rainforest. He discovers the skittish sika deer, a species originally from Japan which is now settled in Britain. He meets local lichenologist Andy Atkins, who shows him the species of lichen which thrive in the wet and humid climate of the Argyll coast. Ray observes a nesting pair of ospreys, and meets a rodent with an impressive set of construction skills - the European beaver. This animal has been reintroduced to Scotland after an absence of 400 years, and Ray talks to Alan Bantick of the Scottish Beaver Trial, finding out why the beaver's return has been so beneficial to other wildlife.

First Time Farmers Channel 4, 20:00
The final episode of the series about the new generation of farmers meets 25-year-old Henry, who has returned to work on the family arable farm with his dad after studying at college. Henry is in line to be the fifth generation of his family to take over the farm. He and his dad are a close team, but whereas the farm always comes first for Henry's dad, Henry puts raves and parties higher on his priority list than his dad would like. Eighteen-yearold pedigree pig farmer Hayley from Dorset has won numerous awards for her champion pigs. She's been looking after pigs since she was a toddler; she has pig breeding in her blood, and even competes against her dad for the coveted Pig of the Year championship. And 24-year-old Rob from Wiltshire is a self-employed shepherd. He's determined to make a career out of sheep farming although he comes from a non-farming family. His goal is to make enough money from this season's sheep shearing to buy his own flock of sheep.

Splash! to return for a second series The highest rating new entertainment series on ITV for five years – Splash! is to return in 2014 for a second series. ITV’s Director of Entertainment and Comedy, Elaine Bedell said, "Splash! has proved itself by building a big, enthusiastic, primetime family audience. We've seen some quite incredible bravery from our celebrities this series, and the scale of the dives they were achieving is in no small part down to their mentor, and the star of our show, Tom Daley. We're looking forward to even more Saturday night spectacle, and sparkle, with the second series." Olympic Bronze medal and British and European Championship winner Tom Daley will return for series two, to once again challenge some of the nation’s favourite faces to learn one of sport’s most difficult disciplines on primetime ITV. Tom Daley said, "I am over the moon to hear Splash! will run for a second season. It’s a dream come true for me to be involved in an entertainment show which has been so successful and also fits so well around my training schedule. Splash! has put diving on primetime TV and diving clubs all across the country have kept telling me that they now have waiting lists, following the popularity of the show. That in itself is an incredible achievement and I'm very excited to be part of it.” Eddie ‘the Eagle’ Edwards was crowned Splash! winner on Saturday, watched by a peak audience of 6.6 million viewers. The final drew an average audience of 5.6 million viewers/ a 25% share of viewing across the show, and was the most watched programme of the night. The series averaged 5.4 million viewers across the run, making it the most watched new entertainment series on ITV since 2008. Splash! is based on the Dutch format Sterren Springen (internationally known as Celebrity Splash!) where it rated as Holland’s number one entertainment show last season. The format is owned by Eyeworks and will be produced again for ITV by Twofour. It was commissioned by ITV’s Director of Entertainment and Comedy Elaine Bedell and Commissioning Editor Asif Zubairy.
Six Nations - Scotland v Italy BBC1, 14.00 John Inverdale introduces coverage from Edinburgh where Scotland host Italy in the second weekend of the 2013 Six Nations. In recent years, these two teams have battled it out to avoid the dreaded wooden spoon, given to the team that finishes last in the tournament. Murrayfield is the only away ground where Italy have enjoyed a Six Nations victory, so no doubt they will be looking to draw on that famous 37-17 victory six years ago. But having lost four of their last six matches against the Azzurri in the Six Nations, Scotland will be determined not to suffer another upset on home soil. John is joined in the studio by former Scotland internationals Andy Nicol and Chris Paterson while match commentary comes from Alastair Eykyn and Lawrence Dallaglio.

Call the Midwife Drama based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, giving an insight into the colourful world of midwifery and family life in London's East End during the 1950s. Jenny is seconded to the short-staffed London Hospital to work on the male surgical ward. Initially hesitant about her temporary assignment, she becomes increasingly reluctant about her new duties when she finds herself working under an intimidating surgeon, Mr Tracey. Back in Poplar the midwives have a new addition to the household, Jane, who lends a hand in Jenny's absence. In one of their most unusual cases, the nuns and nurses are introduced to a forthright pair of twins, Meg and Mave Carter. The two women are identical in every way - they even share a husband - except one of them is now pregnant. As the pair come to terms with the impact that a baby will have on each of them, Jenny unexpectedly helps to save the life of an old friend.
BBC2, 20.00 In this week’s programme Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May engage in an epic race from Wembley to the San Siro stadium in Milan. Hamstrung by a rule about price, Clarkson maximises his bang-for-buck with a £35,000, 662 horsepower Shelby Mustang GT500 whilst Hammond and May pin their hopes to the ever-improving, pan-European rail network. For the winner, tickets to a top flight football match. For the losers, only the stench of failure and a long trudge home. Also in this show, Jeremy slithers about the test track in the brand new Toyota GT86 coupe and car-loving singer-songwriter Amy MacDonald is the Star in the Reasonably Priced Car.
Guilty that he didn't show up for the meeting with the Iman, Masood tries to make things right for Zainab. But is his desire to fix things just covering deeper feelings about his relationship? Determined to get hold of her father, Abi starts to look for him and soon learns she doesn't have to look far - when she finds him, she is disgusted by what she sees. Max tries to explain himself to Abi and Lauren, however they shun their father not wanting to listen to his excuses. Bianca is disappointed by Whitney's news and does her best to change her mind but will she get through to her? The atmosphere is tense in the Masood household and as the obvious stares them in the face, Zainab clearly doesn't want to acknowledge it.

Six Nations - Ireland v England BBC1, 14.25 John Inverdale introduces live coverage from Dublin where Ireland are taking on England. It’s 10 years since England have won a Six Nations match in Dublin – that was the resounding 42-6 victory which clinched the Grand Slam in a year in which they went on to win the World Cup. Another win today would be a boost to head coach Stuart Lancaster’s belief that his side are going in the right direction. But Ireland will be determined to avenge last year’s 30-9 defeat at Twickenham, when their forwards were steam-rollered by England’s dominant pack. Match commentary comes from Eddie Butler and Brian Moore, while Keith Wood, Jonathan Davies and Jeremy Guscott will be John’s guests in the studio.

Internationally renowned chefs and old friends Antonio Carluccio and Gennaro Contaldo return to the Italy they left more than 40 years ago, to discover what has changed in Italian culture and how that has affected the way Italians eat. In the first of the series, the greedy cooks eat their way around Emilia Romagna, home of parma ham and parmesan cheese, to find out if food and family are still at the heart of Italian life. To begin, they spend an enjoyable Sunday lunch with a traditional Italian family whose fortunes ferment with the balsamic vinegar in their vaults. For the daughters, weekends are dominated by the loving preparation of traditional tortellini, a symbol of their love and ties with their family. In Bologna, they meet a feisty female crime journalist whose life does not revolve around cooking and a fast food tortellini millionaire whose livelihood depends upon these changing lifestyles.

The Railway - Keeping Britain On Track BBC2, 21.00 Filmed over a year across the nation, this new six-part observational documentary series for BBC Two goes behind the scenes of an industry we all love to complain about - the railway. With unprecedented access to Network Rail and Britain’s leading train companies The Railway: Keeping Britain On Track reveals the inner workings of one of Britain’s biggest institutions. Britain’s railway is the oldest and one of the busiest in the world. With nearly 1.5 billion journeys made every year, it is a huge network under constant pressure. We see how track-workers, train guards, drivers and management teams strive to keep Britain moving. But on the railway anything can happen. Major and minor incidents play havoc with tight schedules, from suicides and faulty signals, to cable theft and Mother Nature, all bent on bringing the railway to a grinding halt, causing chaos for thousands. The first episode follows staff at London’s King’s Cross station working in the cramped and tiring conditions of the old concourse, where overcrowding is at its worst in 20 years. While platform staff search for late drivers to keep trains running on time, management are on a recruitment drive for the station’s new multi-million pound Western Concourse. Meanwhile, in the travel centre, passengers can hardly disguise their horror at the high fares some have to pay. We see every aspect of this iconic station and the dedicated staff who work there, including train dispatcher Laxman, who has an emotional week as he prepares to leave his beloved railway and head off into retirement after 35 years at King’s Cross. The Railway: Keeping Britain on Track is part of BBC Two’s Genius of Inventions.

This episode comes from the site of the John Brown's shipyard in Clydebank, Glasgow and looks back to the 1930s when Britain's shipyards, once the wonder of the industrial world, were fighting to survive. Charlie Grozier, who grew up just a street away from John Brown's, remembers being 12 years old and watching in awe as the ships his father worked on were launched. At the top of the Titan Crane, historian and shipbuilding expert Anthony Burton talks about the decline of shipyards across the country and Tom Graham explains the impact this collapse had on his home community along with thousands of others.

From The Heart: Tonight ITV1, 20.00 In this special hour-long programme, Tonight highlights the acute shortage of organ donors and follows the heart-rending plight of a five-year-old boy waiting for, and finally undergoing, a life-saving heart transplant. Reporter Jonathan Maitland also visits 20-year-old William Pope who was first filmed by the programme last November. At that time he was on the “urgent” list waiting for a heart transplant, and time was fast running out. William has since had his transplant and is starting off on the long road to recovery. There are currently around 10,000 people in the UK waiting for an organ transplant - around 1,000 of them will die waiting. This programme, which is part of ITV’s From The Heart campaign to raise awareness of organ donation, will examine public attitudes towards this important issue and ask why less than a third of the UK population have registered as organ donors.

But all was not as it seemed, as fraud investigators soon discovered. And we meet Christian, who filled his days sleeping and playing computer games and living on taxpayer hand-outs after his apprenticeship fell through. But would he change his ways and rise to the challenge when his housing association offered hope of a brighter future?

W C C H O IC E “Thunderbirds are Go!” ITV Studios and New Zealand based Pukeko Pictures, in collaboration with world-famous Weta Workshop (Avatar, King Kong, The Lord of the Rings) are to co-produce Thunderbirds are Go! (working title) a 26 x 30’ major new children’s series set to debut on ITV and UK’s CITV Channel in 2015. This re-invention of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson’s iconic series will be produced using a unique mix of CGI animation and live-action model sets. Showcasing Pukeko Pictures’ and Weta Workshop’s ground-breaking creative and technical excellence, it will deliver a whole new level of actionadventure animation for today’s audience, whilst also affectionately paying tribute to the legacy of model locations from the classic series. Featuring the world’s most famous family of heroes, International Rescue, Thunderbirds are Go! will blast the five brave Tracy brothers back on to television screens piloting their incredible vehicles into impossible rescues across the globe. Thunderbirds are Go! will be executive produced by Estelle Hughes for ITV Studios, Giles Ridge for ITV Studios Global Entertainment (ITVS GE) and Richard Taylor and Andrew Smith for Pukeko Pictures. The series head writer is Rob Hoegee (Generator Rex, Teen Titans, Ben 10, Slugterra.) Thunderbirds are Go! is commissioned by Jamila Metran, Head of Programming for CITV, and is currently in pre-production. Denise O Donoghue, Managing Director ITV Studios UK, comments: “Thunderbirds is a highly respected brand that continues to hold recognition around the world. This cult series is often credited as changing the history of animation and action-adventure, and we look forward to taking the show to another level while retaining the much-loved heritage that has endured over the past fifty years.” Jamila Metran, Head of Programming for CITV, adds: “Thunderbirds Are Go! will be a hugely exciting new show for the CITV audience. We’re delighted to be working with ITV Studios and the talented teams at Pukeko Pictures and Weta Workshop, whose success and innovation is renowned across the film and television industry. Thunderbirds is a much-loved British institution with significant global recognition, and our audience will relish this timely opportunity to discover the new series fifty years on.” Richard Taylor, co-owner of Pukeko Pictures and Weta Workshop, says: “Thunderbirds was a hugely influential television series in my childhood. Having watched it originally in black and white, it was only years later that I discovered the full and rich world that Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, Derek Meddings, Mike Trimm and their team created. It is thrilling therefore to think we have the opportunity to work with ITV on this new series inspired by this most wonderful of British shows. I personally, together with the teams here at Pukeko Pictures and Weta Workshop, look forward to designing and creating an inspirational world that will engage the imagination of a whole new generation as it did for us nearly half a century ago.”

Melvyn Bragg, accompanied by a vintage mobile cinema, travels across the country, to show incredible footage preserved by the British Film Institute and other national and regional film archives, and tell the history of modern Britain. This episode comes from the Museum of Kent Life and looks back to the 1930s. This was a time when British farming was on the brink of mechanisation, a move which would change the face of the countryside forever. Gerry Smith paints a vivid picture of the tough but satisfying life he led as a young farm-worker in the 1930s and the sadness he felt when his beloved horses were replaced by machines. Jonathan Dimbleby explains what the arrival of machines meant for the countryside and John Reeves-Vane shows Melvyn how unmechanised rural life in Britain used to be.

By Sue McDonald THERE is a tendency nowadays to buy cheap articles and simply throw them away when they are no longer working, or in good condition. I was quite shocked recently when I had a good-quality DVD player that had stopped working, and was told that it wasn’t worth repairing, since I could buy a new one for the same price as one hour of their labour to look at it! That doesn’t seem right to me but, having said that, I am guilty of the same sin sometimes, particularly with regard to shoes. I recently bought four nice pairs for under 10 euros each in La Laguna. And I will be tempted to throw them away when they are worn out, rather than get them repaired! Unfortunately, this is the way of the world today, although it may be all very well for small items, but not to larger purchases. Sometimes, buying cheap can be a false economy. Take sofas, for example. We stock cheap sofa beds from 250 euros, but they are not particularly comfortable, either as sofas or as beds. Also, they do not tend to last very long, so if you have to buy a
Page 38
We’re in a disposable world now
second sofa within a couple of years, it will not have proved to be a wise buy. Budget is obviously a big issue for everyone now, but I generally advise clients to buy the best they can afford in key items, and make savings in other areas. For example, in my opinion, your money is best invested in a quality sofa and mattress, as this will directly affect your comfort. Savings can be made in other areas, according to your budget. Contrary to this throw-away society, we do a lot of re-upholstery work for people whose sofas are looking a bit worse for wear, but are structurally sound. If the sofa itself needs repairing or in need of new foam, it may be uneconomical to reupholster. But generally speaking, it does prove to be worthwhile, and considerably cheaper than buying new. We always ensure that our clients are given free estimates of all
the options, so they can make an informed choice. We recently reupholstered a sofa for some Royal Palm clients, who loved the sofa they had brought from England. Even though it needed new foam in the seats, it was still worth reupholstering and worked out cheaper than buying new. Together with some new voile curtains and a couple of scatter cushions, it looked like a new apartment at a fraction of the price of replacement. The same can also apply to furniture. For example, many of the major complexes were sold with good-quality furnishings, and 15-20 years later, it is still in good condition. Provided the clients are still happy with the style, we can offer a respray service which will modernise and revitalise a whole apartment at a reasonable price, and again, at a fraction of replacement value.
A brilliant idea for quick wash and go DYSON, the revolutionary vacuum-cleaner company, has launched a tap that washes your hands - and then dries them! The firm says the Airblade Tap, along with two new versions of its existing Airblade dryers, are the fastest, most hygienic way for people to dry their hands. The tap uses infrared sensors to pinpoint the hand positions and release water from the tap stem. The stem of the tap has two branches with air outlets, blowing high-velocity sheets of
unheated air over the hands to dry them. Hi-tech website Wired, which tested the device, said the main benefit was that the washing and drying operations both took place over the washbasin, meaning water would not be blown on to the bathroom floor. It has cost the company nearly £27m to come up with the idea, and it says hands can be dried in 12 seconds, But maybe the oldfashioned towel will suit most people because the Airblade Tap costs a penny under £1,000! The other new Dyson
devices are the Airblade V hand dryer, which is 60% smaller than the existing dryer, and a re-engineered Airblade, made from polycarbonate and weighing 1.1kg less than the original. Conventional hand dryers use one column of air to evaporate the water from a pair of hands, accompanied by hand-rubbing. On the other hand, Dyson says its Airblade devices force air through tiny apertures at 430mph, scraping water from a person’s hands rapidly and leaving them completely dry.

Containers make a good place to start, you can literally use anything – wooden boxes, hessian sacks, tins or even shopping bags. The only thing that you need to bear in mind is the size of the plant that you want to grow. For example if you want to grow potatoes and carrots they need alot of soil as they grow deep down, tomatoes and courgettes for instance have a large root base, small pots are ideal for herbs and peas and beans need space above as they grow tall. Use good quality compost; it’s cheaper
to raise your own plants from seed if you don’t have any seed trays you can use old yoghurt pots or butter containers. If the thought of planting seeds is too much for you then you can opt to purchase plug plants. Water your plants regularly, morning and night. You have an option to feed your young plants with specialised feed to encourage growth, but if you want to remain organic then best not use anything. To entice your plants to flower you will need some help from the insect population – so plant sunflowers, marigolds, honeysuckle, rosemary, lavender, thyme and mint to encourage bees and other pollinating insects.
light, its bristling leaves are dramatically set off when the fibrous tips are backlit by the sun. Put a layer of crocks in the bottom of the container, then half fill it with gritty compost. Knock the palm from its pot and stand it on the compost in the centre of the container. Top it up with compost, firming it around the rootball with your fingers. Finish with a decorative mulch of gravel or pebbles. The dasylirion hates being waterlogged, especially in winter, so don’t overwater it, and raise the pot on pot feet so it doesn’t sit in a puddle. Scented edibles Wandering around the garden centre at the weekend they have a good selection of herbs available, so why not plant up a pot. • 1 serrated-leafed lavender, Lavandula x christiana • 1 woolly thyme, Thymus pseudolanuginosus • 1 golden-leafed sage,
such as Salvia officinalis ‘Icterina’ • 1 rosemary, such as Rosmarinus officinalis Prostratus Group • Wide terracotta pot, crocks, free-draining compost, horticultural grit or sand Most herbs originate in hot, dry climates like our own here in Tenerife. Growing them in pots is therefore perfect here as many of us live in apartments. Serratedleaved lavender is an attractive alternative to ordinary lavender and looks wonderful planted with woolly thyme, golden-leafed sage and low-growing rosemary. Cover the bottom of the pot with crocks, then fill it two-thirds with compost, mixed with a few handfuls of horticultural grit or sand. Arrange the plants in the pot in any order you like. Top up with compost, firming it around the roots with your fingers. Stand the pot somewhere in full sun.

UK hit by huge ‘killer slugs’ SPAIN’S ‘killer slugs’, which are said to eat dead mammals, dog excrement and even each other, are now in the UK, hellbent on causing chaos. Imported salad leaves are said to have transported the slugs, also known as Arion vulgaris, into Britain, and they have bred rapidly. Experts are predicting these vile creatures will not only cause problems for gardeners but also throughout Britain’s lu-
crative oilseed industry. Scientist Dr Ian Bedford, head of entomology at the John Innes Centre in Norwich, said: “There are reports of oilseed rape having problems this year which, we think, could be because of this Spanish slug. “I’ve actually seen them in a potato field in the middle of summer, sliming their way across dry, sandy soil on the outskirts of Norwich. “The agronomist with me couldn’t believe

what he was seeing because slugs don’t usually do that. But this is a hardy species, and my findings have been confirmed by Aberdeen University.” He added: “The presence of this aggressive species is bad news. The Spanish slug can lay up to 400 eggs, and has few predators. “It can grow up to 15cm long and has been called the ‘killer slug’ because of its cannibalistic habits.”

Don’t get in a lather...
By Carl Pattison IT’S a basic ritual that you shower or bathe daily, but what about your hair? I’ve often heard people say: “I haven’t washed my hair for a week, two weeks – even
three.” And the record is three months! But why would you even admit to that? Cleaning your hair is the same as washing your body. It gets just as dirty, and it collects more dust and grease than any part of your body because it is always exposed. Think of the things you do, like run dirty fingers through it, or sweat from simply living here in Tenerife. Your hair is a collector of the general grime we encounter every day.
Page 40
There’s no such thing as over-washing your hair, say, if you’re doing it 4-5 times a week, as long as you are using the right products. Your shampoo and conditioner should replace everything you remove when washing your hair. And if you are using styling products, then these need to be cleansed out of your hair.
Applying layer over layer of these will create a build-up and make your hair look dull. I’ve washed hair many times in the salon and seen the water on the first shampoo run brown. And that’s not colour running out but dirt! I think we see our hair as some fragile item that doesn’t like being washed too much. Yet hair is superstrong, and it can withstand many of the things we do to it, so
washing it isn’t so bad after all. You should brush your hair through before washing, though, to detangle any knots. Wash in warm water, not hot, and wash it twice; the first time to remove the dirt and the second to cleanse the hair. Conditioners at home should be left on for a few minutes and then rinsed
in lukewarm water. These are the simple, easy steps to keep your hair in perfectly “clean” condition, but don’t overdo it, either, by washing every day. It just isn’t needed, and neither is the old wives’ tale that colours take better on dirty hair! But it does need to be washed, especially when greasy, to remove this build-up. And as long as you are kind to it, you won’t get yourself in a lather with your shampoo.
A sunshine antidote to kill the pain THE risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis could be reduced by living here in Tenerife, or in other allyear-round sunny countries.
An American study of more than 200,000 women suggests a positive link between sunlight and the risk of developing the disease. They speculate that vitamin D, which is produced in sunlight, may protect the body, but they warn that people should not spend all day in the sun. Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by the body’s own immune system attacking the joints, and it can be intensely painful. It is more common in women, but no one has ever discovered the reason why a patient’s own defences turn against her. Researchers at Harvard Medical School followed two groups of more than 100,000 women. The first were monitored from 1976 onwards and the second from 1989. Their health was then compared with estimates of the levels of UV-B radiation they were exposed to, based on where they lived. In the 1976 group,
those in the sunniest parts of the US enjoying the highest levels of sunshine were 21% less likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis than the others. But UV levels had no affect upon the risk of rheumatoid arthritis in the 1989 group. Dr Chris Deighton, President of the British Society for Rheumatology, said: “It’s an interesting study, which gives us more clues about how the environment can affect the chances of getting rheumatoid arthritis. “But we cannot advocate everybody sitting in the sunshine all day to protect from rheumatoid arthritis, because UV-B burns people and increases the risk of skin cancer.”
He added: “The treatment options in rheumatology have transformed the lives of patients with this crippling disease in recent years, and anything that adds to our knowledge is welcomed.” “Professor Alan Silman, medical director of Arthritis Research UK, said: “Studies undertaken have not shown, thus far, that vitamin D is a useful treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. “We know that many people with arthritis have low levels of vitamin D, and this can have a powerful effect on the types of immune cells which may cause this condition. We’re doing research to find out how this happens.”

Start spreading the news - butter is better for you! By Val Sainsbury EXPERTS have discovered startling new evidence about “healthy” spreads, which could spark heart attacks. They even advocate that eating butter is probably far healthier than substitutes like margarine and vegetable oils, as the Atkins Diet has proclaimed for many years. A new study outlines why ingredients in vegetable fats can lead to inflammation, which plays a major role in chronic illnesses, from heart disease and cancer to arthritis and Alzheimer’s disease. The research, by experts from the US Government’s National Institutes of Health in Maryland, has been
published online in the British Medical Journal. The scientists involved recovered missing data from a Sixties’ study involving 458 men, aged 30-59, who had suffered heart attacks or angina. Using modern statistics to compare death rates, they found no benefit in replacing saturated fats with omega-6 linoleic acid, found in vegetable fats. They actually said replacing animal fats with polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) from vegetable fats increased the risk of death in patients with cardiovascular disease. And those who increased their intake of the “healthy” fats over three years were almost twice as likely to die. The group’s findings will have major implications for millions of Brits, who have stopped using butter in favour of trendy, lessfatty spreads and oils
following decades of guidance about healthy living. Victoria Taylor, senior dietician at the British Heart Foundation, said: “Our understanding of the effect of different fats on the heart develops all the time as research into this complex issue is published. “Replacing saturated fats with unsaturated alternatives is a wellknown recommendation for your heart, based on many large, in-depth studies. “However, this research highlights
the need for us to further understand how different unsaturated fats affect our risk of heart disease. She added: “It’s important to be sparing with whichever fats you us. Try to grill, bake, or steam your food, rather than frying. “And measuring out oils instead of pouring straight from the bottle is another good way of making sure you’re not overdoing it.” Better still, my own advice, which I’ve been going on about for years, is to cook in butter.
It’s tasty and doesn’t leave that fatty residue in your mouth. The omega-6 linoleic acid group in the study had a higher risk of death from all causes (62 per cent), as well as from cardiovascular disease (70 per cent) and coronary heart disease (74 per cent), compared to others. Linoleic acid is present in high amounts in some commonly-used vegetable oils such as corn, sunflower, safflower and soya bean. Once in the body, it is converted into a chemical called arachidonic acid, which can set off the release of other chemicals leading to inflammation, which is a leading cause of many chronic diseases. Britons average a 10g daily intake of linoleic acid, found in about nine level teaspoons of polyunsaturated margarine, or three teaspoons of sunflower oil.
Coronary heart disease is the UK’s biggest killer, with about one in five men and one in seven women dying from the disease. It causes around 94,000 deaths each year, and there are also at least 2.6 million people living with the condition. Angina, the most common symptom of coronary heart disease, affects two million in Britain. Dr Christopher Ramsden, for the NIH study, said: “Advice to substitute vegetable oils rich in PUFAs for animal fats rich in saturated fats has been a cornerstone of dietary guidelines for the past half-century. “These findings could have important implications for worldwide dietary advice to substitute omega-6 linoleic acid, or polyunsaturated fats in general, for saturated fats.”
Would-be dads cannot sit around for too long YOUNG men who sit watching TV for just three hours a day have half the sperm-count of those who hardly watch telly at all. Experts at Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH), had their recent study results published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. They say the effect could be through lack of exercise - or to testicles overheating through prolonged sitting! Those wanting to father a child were urged against wearing tight underpants to improve sperm quality, while drivers and cyclists may also be at risk. Healthy young men, who watched more than 20 hours of TV each week, had a 44% lower sperm-count than those who watched little or nothing. And men who exercised for 15 or more hours weekly at a moderate-tovigorous rate had a 73% higher sperm-count than those who exercised fewer than five hours a
week. Mild exercise did not affect sperm quality. Study leader Dr Audrey Gaskins said: “We know little about how lifestyle may impact semen quality and male fertility in general, so identifying two potentiallymodifiable factors which appear to have such a big impact on sperm counts is exciting.” The researchers analysed the semen quality of 189 men aged
8th February - 14th February 2013
between 18-22 in the 2009-2010 Rochester Young Men’s Study at the University of Rochester. The men were asked about their physical activity and how much time they spent watching TV, DVDs or videos over the previous three months, in addition to health issues that may affect their sperm quality, such as diet, stress levels, and smoking.

Empire Modern British R
Nothing Ventured OVER the course of the last 4-5 years, high-end British cuisine has seen a resurgence in its popularity. That’s mainly through TV exposure by people like Gordon Ramsay, Heston Blumenthal and others. Their television shows have educated the public and opened their eyes to the notion that British food can be among the best around when done properly. This has been proved
Page 42
by Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck in Berkshire, which is regularly named as one of the best restaurants in the world. And Gordon Ramsay has just opened his very own pub and grill at Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, serving British dishes only, and you’ll be lucky to get a reservation at either of these two restaurants any time soon! When I heard that the Venture restaurants were opening their very own high end British Restaurant and Steak House at the Safari
Centre I was intrigued to see how well it would be received. My concerns were not aimed at the restaurant itself, as you always know that the Venture Restaurants set out very high standards of both quality of food and service , but more so how a high end British restaurant would be received by the public as it is an untouched area of the market for Tenerife. On Monday evening we headed down to Empire Restaurant and took a table under their warmly-lit, handcrafted, Georgianesque, iron pergola . The whole restaurant boasts that familiar contemporary style that you expect from a Venture restaurant with a modern Georgian theme throughout, with a grand-columned entrance, and chic grey
interior, complemented by the heavy luxurious suede curtains that frame the elegant leaded windows that give it an uber British feel. It was a pleasant surprise to learn how noticeably knowledgeable the staff were about their extensive menu, and to see how genuinely enthusiastic they all were about their
own personal favourites dishes. Looking down the menu you see instantly that it is a rather unique restaurant here in Tenerife. There are all the classic dishes you miss from home. You will be hardpushed to decide which dishes to go for first. At this point you begin to hope that it’s all as good as it reads.
So it’s worth returning to try all the other dishes that get your mouth watering. You have the choice of modern interpretations of the traditional British menu, with the classics such as fish and chips, steak and ale pie, plus bangers and mash, all the way up to what is considered to be the signature dish, beef wellington.

everything gained! Accompanied by the Charcoal Grill and Chop section, which boasts the finest select cuts of fresh meat, ranging from free-range, cornfed hen to 28-day dry aged premium sirloin. It is also one of the few places I have seen serve a porterhouse T-bone. As I said earlier, British food can be brilliant when done properly! Huggie happily tells us: “We make all of our pickles, chutneys and sauces in-house from scratch.” He adds with a smile: “The only two sauces we buy in on the whole menu are ketchup and mustard and that’s because you cant beat Heinze or Colmans.” To start, we chose the Sharing pork board for two. This consisted of four- hour boiled ham hock, slow-roasted crisp belly pork, Empire’s own recipe Cumberland sausage and Empire’s exclusive Scotch egg, served with a trio of pickled red cabbage, spiced apple puree and beetroot chutney, all of
which was beautifully presented. It led us to our “Classic British” main courses. We selected the quintessentially British Fish and Chips and the restaurant’s signature dish, the Empire Beef Wellington. Their modern take on Fish and Chips introduces you to a succulent fillet of cod, dipped in a light beer batter, served with three-timescooked, thick-cut chips and a duo of crushed creamy peas and their own tartar sauce. The Beef Wellington is the pride of the restaurant, and is a prime cut of fillet steak, seared

then perched on a layer of foie gras, lightly seasoned and wrapped in a filo puff pastry parcel, which is baked until golden and served on a bed of wilted spinach. To say that we were both impressed would be a huge understatement, especially with the Beef Wellington as this is a dish so easy to get wrong, and difficult to get right, which they so did get right. SPOT ON! The dessert menu was then offered and, on the recommendation of the waitress, we chose the apple tart with smashed almonds, made with sweet apples and warm
cinnamon, served with creamy vanilla ice cream, and the British vanilla cheesecake, topped with poached strawberries and a sticky sweet strawberry syrup. On occasion, a cheesecake can be very heavy and rich and difficult to finish, but this, however, was very light, with a crunchy ginger-biscuit base. Fortunately for me, my companion was quite full from the main course, so I got to eat the majority of both desserts. During the evening we got a chance to catch up with Rob Ng, the owner and Huggie Fox-Buchanan, the restaurant manager. And the passion and enthusiasm for what they are setting out to achieve with this restaurant is great to see. Rob was saying that through the ever-increasing popularity of the steaks from Bianco’s with the residents, the next step was obvious: “To make our own steak house!” At the same time, he noticed the changing trend towards the upmarket British eateries. Rob adds: “I have been very interested in this new, modern British cuisine revival over the last few years, professional and personally, and I just had to get involved! So the obvious thing to do was combine the two styles of restaurant and, I’m pleased to say, I feel we have really hit home
with this combination.” So if you are wondering where to eat this weekend, why not go back to real homecomfort food, served up with true style and finesse at Empire Modern British Restaurant & Steak House. We know that after
our first experience, we can’t wait to go back! Empire Modern British Restaurant & Steak House can be found on the first floor of the Safari Centre, between Imperial Tai-Pan and Thai Botanico. For reservations please call 922 789 971. See advert on page 11.

Ryanair to put fares up after ‘compensation’ ruling by EU LAST week’s EU ruling on airline compensation for flight delays and cancellations has driven one company to take drastic measures. Budget airline Ryanair, said to be the only firm not to make amends to customers caught up in the Icelandic volcanic ash-cloud saga nearly two years ago, says it will increase its ticket
Page 44
prices. Spain and other European airports suffered mightily after an ash cloud from the Eyjäfjällajøkull volcano persuaded authorities to close down the airspace across the north of the continent. Thousands of passengers, stranded and unable to return home, were forced to pay for accommodation,
transport and food, while others had their holidays cancelled because there were no flights. Most airlines refunded tickets and, where customers were stuck abroad, provided hotels and food until they were able to be repatriated. But Ryanair has always refused to do so on the grounds that the flight cancellations were caused by an incident outside its control. Ads reported in Canarian Weekly last week, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled that airlines were responsible for assistance costs for passengers affected
by flights being grounded through extraordinary circumstances. But Irish-based Ryanair reacted immediately at a press conference, saying: “We are very sorry to hear about the ECJ’s decision to allow passengers to claim for compensation for flight delays which are clearly outside the control of the airlines.” Ryanair’s management claims that all flight firms across Europe will have to increase their end prices to the consumer. Michael O’Leary, Ryanair’s controversial chief, said: “Now that we have to pay out these costs, we shall have to
recoup them from our customers. “That’s because a defective European regulation means we cannot recover them from governments or syndicates, who were responsible for 95% of the flight delays. “When the governments across Europe unnecessarily closed huge chunks of air-space because of the non-existent ‘ash cloud’ hanging over Ireland, the UK and the continent in 2010, travel insurance companies wriggled out of their liability to customers by claiming the cause was an ‘Act of God’.” Mr O’Leary stressed: “This makes the airlines
a ‘last-resort insurance company’, even where, in the majority of cases, delays and cancellations are caused by air-traffic controllers or national strikes.” That was a clear reference to Spain, which has seen a number of countrywide strikes in the past two years, as well as a widespread strike by air-traffic controllers in December 2010, which led the then president to declare a “state of emergency” to prevent them. However, the air-traffic controllers went ahead with their strike, putting them on the wrong side of the law.

By Jav I HAVE been guilty of ignoring Britain’s cheapest car as the start of 2013 revs up with plenty of tasty, but costly offerings.
So, a few weeks late - but better late than never - welcome to the Dacia Sandero “supermini”, which is now on sale in the UK at just a fiver under £6,000. The Romanian company, now a subsidiary of Renault since the French firm’s takeover in 1999, has provided a no-frills, basic, entry-level Access model. It doesn’t even have a stereo system, although motorists can upgrade for £110, but it does have powerassisted steering, but no air-conditioning or central-locking. The five-door car can carry five people and their luggage comfortably, and overall, it is far from spartan. It includes 15in steel wheels, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat and even daytime running lights. Safety features include anti-lock ABS brakes with Emergency Brake Assist, traction control, Electronic Stability Control, driver, passenger and front-side airbags and ISOFIX child-seat anchorage points in both outer rear seats. It is available in white only, and its chunky bodystyle is complemented well by its contrasting black bumpers, door mirrors and handles. And it has one of the biggest boots in its class at 320 litres, or a whopping 1,200 litres with the rear seats down. The budget model is considered by Dacia to be an “enemy of the unnecessary”, which sums up the total ethics of the basic model. Yet it really is money
Motoring
Dacia – cheap and cheerful!
worth spending. The mid-level Ambiance costs £600 more and offers a radio/CD player with fingertip remote controls, USB and AUX input, Bluetooth, remote central-locking, electric front windows, body-coloured bumpers and 15in Colorado wheel trims. And as the company says, there are also “plush interior touches”, such as chrome surrounds for the air vents, instrument dials and steering wheel logo. The top-of-the-range Sandero is called the Lauréate, which Dacia believe as many as two-thirds of buyers will choose, at a cost of £7,995 upwards. It comes “fully loaded” with equipment, including air-conditioning, heated and electrically-adjustable door mirrors, cruise-control and electric rear windows as standard. There is also a heightadjustable driver’s seat and leather steering wheel and gear knob,
8th February - 14th February 2013
and an upgraded radio/ CD player with MP3 CD reader and fingertip, remote-controls and four speakers, a trip computer and a speed limiter. The interior is also more “upmarket” with a graphite-look finish for the centre console surround, front door handles and steering wheel lower insert. Its modern looks are also made even sharper with 15in Kalahari wheel trims, chrome front grille, front fog lights, plus bodycoloured door handles and door mirrors.
There’s also an optional, fully-integrated, 7in touchscreen navigation and multi-media system for just £250. But back to the basic Sandero model, and there’s a choice of three frugal engines to power it. The 1.2 litre 16V 75 petrol is on offer with every trim level, while the even more frugal, yet powerful, petrol TCe 90 and diesel dCi 90 versions are available for both the Ambiance and Lauréate. The four-cylinder, 1.2 petrol delivers 47.9mpg on the combined
cycle, with a top speed of around 98mph, accelerating from 0-62mph in around 13.5secs. The second engine is the 0.9 litre three cylinder TCe 90, with Stop-Start technology, capable of 109 mph and fuel economy of 54.3 mpg. It will accelerate from 0-60mph in about 12secs. And the third is the new 1.5-litre diesel dCi 90, which delivers 74.3mpg and has a top speed of around 106mph, with 0–62mph in roughly 12.5 seconds. A top-of-the range
Sandero, with the full suite of extras, will still cost just a little over £10,000, which makes it well worth considering if you are on a tight budget but are seeking reliability. The two top engines also boast gearshift indicators and an “ECO” to reduce fuel consumption by 10% - to save money at the pumps. The Sandero also comes with a threeyear/60,000-mile warranty and free roadside assistance. And that’s top value for money. A Dacia spokesman said: “Over the last few years, Dacia’s engineering team have worked out how even the simplest idea can lead to a few pennies being saved. “Right down to using the same windows on every car in the range helps shave even more off prices for the hardpressed car buyer.” He added: “But Dacia is renowned for its quality and reliability. After all, our models are designed, engineered and built to cope with the rough stuff and weather extremes everywhere, from Brazil to Russia.” “For the last eight years, it has been the fastest-growing automotive brand in Europe, rising from under 5,000 sales in 2004 to shifting a mighty 350,000 last year. And the final piece of the jigsaw is the UK.”
Brits spark new-car boom THE number of British car registrations rose in January for the 11th consecutive month. An 11.5% rise in car sales, to 143,643 units, as shown by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), suggests that healthy deals and offers have helped to drive de-
mand. Motorists, ever mindful of cost and the environment issues, were attracted in fuel-efficiency advances across all ranges, and new, alternative-propulsion systems. These include diesel-electric hybrids, plug-in hybrids and extended-range elec-
tric motors. There was growth across all fuel types, but alternatively-fuelled cars saw a 7% rise. These positive figures have persuaded the SMMT to revise its growth forecast upwards for this year, and predicting firm growth in 2014.
The market is expected to rise by 0.6% to 2.057 million units in 2013 and by 2.6% to 2.11 million units in 2014. The automotive industry is a vital part of the British economy, accounting for 700,00 jobs and 10% of total UK exports.

Aridane back with a big bang
ON Sunday, while CD Marino were licking their wounds after another painful defeat, Tenerife’s supporters were enjoying the game of the season. It was a match that us English would call “CupTie Football”. End-toend action, amazing saves, woodwork rattled, controversial decisions, late goals, thrilling debuts - and an Aridane double! Yes, the lump hit the back of the onion bag twice, and even put in a shift. But Caudal had been on a decent run and they were worthy foes. Tenerife employed a highly-unusual 4-4-2 formation, with Marti partnering Aridane and Suso benched. It was a bold move, especially coupled with a first start for Fran

closed, Tenerife looked better balanced. But they did concede early on. Some sloppy defending gifted Amando a goal, which Tenerife tried to get back during the first half. An injury to Tarantino didn’t help the cause, and it was interesting to see Yeray replace him. I ventured on this page a few issues back that the youngster looked a natural centre-back, and I’d like to see him get a run in the jersey. Meanwhile, Tenerife continued to bang on the door, and squander chance after chance. But early in the second half, the Caudal defence was breeched. Aridane caused panic and the keeper’s soft punch was volleyed home from the edge of the box by Luismi. This led to the endto-end contest, as both managers went for the win. The hosts hit a bar and Aridane was thwarted time after
time by some dogged defending and fine goalkeeping. He finally got his reward 20 minutes from time, but needed three bites at the cherry before bundling the ball home after twice being denied from six yards. Credit to Caudal as they kept plugging away and, four minutes from time they were gifted a soft penalty. A free-kick saw Suso jump on the edge of the box. The ball hit his arm and the pen was given. It was tough on Suso, and Prosi sent Aragoneses the wrong way. It looked like two points dropped. However, deep into time added on, the Caudal defence fell asleep from a throw. Aridane had a yard of space, and his dipping shot nestled into the top corner. The hosts were crestfallen, the visitors ecstatic - and the smile still hasn’t been wiped off the face of Aridane!
With second-place Real Oviedo getting chinned at second-bottom Alcala, CD Tenerife now have a crucial fivepoint lead at the top. And this Sunday will go a long way to deciding if they will still be there in May. It’s Carnival weekend in Santa Cruz and, hopefully, the players will be a 100 miles away as they sleep before the match with white-hot Leganes. Like the other sides in the top three, they are in the wrong league. They have a fine mix of youth and local experience and, after a dodgy start, they are the league’s form side. I flagged up in this column before Christmas how well they were playing, and the stats don’t lie. You have to go back to 28th October when they last lost. That was 3-0 at Real Oviedo, but the scoreline didn’t tell the story. Oviedo scored against the run of play - and even when Leganes had Carmona sent off, it was only on the counter that they got caught. They have since gone 13 games unbeaten, averaging two goals a game, and star striker Dioni is scoring for fun. He was part of the Cadiz squad which should have gone up last season and he has been a revelation. His hat-trick against Guijuelo took him to the top of the goal-scoring charts. Tenerife have conceded just three goals at the Heliodoro all season, so something has to give. Leganes will go in search of the win and it should be a cracker. Remember, Tenerife play better against sides who come forward, and I just hope manager Alvaro Cervera is brave enough to keep the 4-42 formation. The Carnival Cracker is live on Oasis Fm from 11.45am this Sunday.

Perfect Palms are title-bound By Geoff Huxtable AFTER maximums from Daniel and Mally, which helped power Palms A to a whitewash win over Gaffers A, the Division 1 leaders are in touching distance of the title. A 25th consecutive victory tonight (Friday) will see them crowned them champions and leave them just three games away from an incredibly-perfect season! Ourplace Playboys, 23 points behind them
in third place, took the trebles leg to beat Barracuda Bytes, while Rood cruised to a comfortable win over Sundowners 1. A happy Paddy hit a first 180 for Summerlands during a loss against Target Titans, and Cozy Warriors just got the better of Bar 180 B. There were no fewer than four draws in Division 2, and one of those could have a big impact on the destination

of the league title. As I’ve mentioned before, Emerald Lounge have a tough few matches to finish with, and they duly slipped up against Chipeque to finish allsquare, Dave hitting his first maximum for the visitors. A 7-1 win over Phoenix Flames means that Bar
180 C look as though they’re back in the driving seat. The Rebels, Gaffers B and Sundowners 2, all took the trebles legs to tie in their respective matches, while Bar Amistad 1 claimed the last rubber to beat the Playgirls. A ding-dong battle
DIVISION 1 RESULTS
The division’s other match took place at Target Bar, where Bar 180 A beat the hosts 5-3, aided by a 135 checkout from Mick. Xtreme Sports Bar also face Target Army this week, and a win will see them crowned champions for the third year in a row.

Exiles can do no Ron! THE Oasis Fm Pool League embraces everyone, regardless of gender, nationality and age. And the league’s oldest player inspired his team-mates to a stunning double this week. Ron Cass is 83 and still going strong - and on Tuesday, he won a vital frame as Exiles B accounted for Ryan’s Bar. You could hear the cheer in Gran Canaria when he sunk his final black! The Exiles’ good feeling stretched to Wednesday when they also beat Hoppys Bar to move into the top eight in Division Two. With most of the top sides not in action, James Place took advantage to move back into the top five as they beat Hoppys 8-4, while it was honours even between Picasso’s and Gaffers B. Toscales B
and Bluebell B also shared the spoils. In Division One, Tenerife Hammers A were the odd side out, and they now sit four points behind Gaffers A. They won 10-2 at Palms A, but the scoreline doesn’t even come close to telling the story. It sets up beautifully their match with Hammers A this Sunday. It’s a 2pm start and should be a cracker. Phoenix Potters sneaked past Inn The Pink A to move back up to third, while Dreamers are now sixth after a 7-5er at home to The Peacocks. Phoenix Knights won the Los Abrigos derby with Bar La Caña, while Terrace Bar A came back from 3-1 down to beat their B team 8-4. Every week, Tenerife Hammers C either win or lose 7-5 - and this week they were victorious against Toscales A. It’s Cup week again
