Blade Runner is accused of shooting his girlfriend OSCAR PISTORIUS, the Olympic and Paralympian sprinter and one of the biggest names in world athletics, has been charged with murdering his girlfriend. Police say he shot 30-year-old Reeva Steenkamp at his home in Pretoria, South Africa. She was found dead at the double amputee’s Silverlakes house in the high-class, gated complex in the early hours of yesterday (Thursday) morning. Pistorius, the finest Paralympic competitor ever, also showed his exceptional class by reaching the 400m semi-finals at last summer’s London Olympics. He and his girlfriend had been the only people in the house at the time of the shooting, according to local police Brigadier Denise Beukes.
She told reporters: “We are talking about neighbours and people who heard things earlier in the evening, and when the shooting took place,” she said. Earlier, police said a 9mm pistol had been found at the scene. One theory circulating is that Johannesburg-born Pistorius thought that Reeva, a model and his partner for a number of months, was a burglar, and that it was a Valentine surprise which went horribly wrong. Some of her last Twitter postings indicated that she was looking forward to celebrating Valentine’s Day with him. “What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow???” she posted. The South African police said they were aware of previous incidents of a “domestic
nature” at the house, and recent media interviews with Pistorius revealed that he kept an assortment of weapons at home. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office say of South Africa: “It has a very high level of crime, including rape and murder (there were several cases of murder involving resident British Nationals during 2009-10). South Africa has some of the world’s highest rates of violent crime, and many homeowners have weapons to defend themselves against intruders. Yet the complex where Pistorius lives is surrounded by a threemetre-high wall and an electric fence. “We are all devastated,” Steenkamp’s tearful agent, Sarita Tomlinson, told Reuters. “They did have a good relationship and
her family is in shock. Nobody actually knows what happened.” Paralympian Oscar gained world-wide respect for overcoming his disabilities, competing with able-bodied athletes on a level playing field. The South African was born without a fibula in both legs and races with the aid of carbon-fibre, prosthetic blades – hence his nickname. He made history last summer by being the first double amputee to run in the Olympics. As a result of his achievements, he is thought to receive up to £2m per annum in sponsorship from companies such as BT and Nike, among other leading brands. Following his arrest, Pistorius was taken to hospital for a routine medical examination. “When a person has
been accused of a crime like murder, they look at things like testing under the fingernails, taking a blood alcohol sample, and all kinds of other tests,” said Brigadier Beukes. “They are standard medical tests.” Pistorius was original-
ly scheduled to attend Pretoria Magistrates Court yesterday afternoon (Thursday) to face a murder charge. But prosecutors said his appearance had been postponed until this morning to give forensic officers time to carry out their work.

Cruise ship tragedy THOMSON Majesty is still stuck in La Palma according to unconfirmed reports. As we go to print there are reports that the cruise ship the Thomson Majesty which is due to depart today, Friday, from Santa Cruz and sails around the islands is still detained in the port of La Palma by police following the deaths of five crew members during a routine lifeboat drill last Sunday. Emergency services were summoned at 12.06. The accident occurred as a life boat was lowered into the water as part of a routine muster drill by crew members. A winch cable snapped as the boat was being winched back up. It flipped over, trapping five crew members in the sea; another three
were taken to hospital and have since been discharged and are back on the ship. The ship, which has been in service since 1991, is owned by Louis Cruises and operated by Thomson. It docked on Sunday in La Palma at 08.20 after travelling from Gran Canaria. La Palma is a regular port of call for the ‘Island Cruise’ which carries around 2,000 passengers, many of them British. It was due to depart at 3pm for Funchal, Madeira but now remains in port. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirmed to Canarian Weekly, “We are aware that a tragic accident has occurred, but we are not aware that any British National onboard has been hurt”. Thomson has also updated its compensation package to those affected passengers with a

Swallows swoop on Carnival
A PICKPOCKET who stole a wallet, then rang the victim to ask for his PIN number, has since been arrested. He pretended to be from the card company, and the account-holder gave his four-digit number over the phone, believing his story. Fortunately the card had already been locked and he gained no cash.
Such a hot month
LAST month, we experienced the driest January in the Archipelago since 1995, with an average rainfall of only 6.7 litres per square metre. According to meteorologists AMET, it was also one of the warmest on record, with temperatures 1.5 degrees celsius above average for this time of year. The highest temperature recorded within the islands was on El Hierro, where the temperature reached 29C on one day.
Body found in sea
THE body of a ferry passenger, who jumped into the water when a Naviera Armas ferry was on its regular service between Santa Cruz and Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, has been found. The person, yet to be identified, jumped from the Volcan de Timanfaya during its last journey of the night.
No more tourist buildings
THE moratorium on new hotel and holiday apartment builds, introduced in 2001, will become permanent under new legislation being drafted by the Canary Islands Government. The proposal, which applies to all but luxury accommodation, passed its first reading in parliament last week, despite the dismissal of amendments proposed by the PP. Berriel Domingo, Minister of Environment and Regional Policy, stressed that it was not a “temporary rule or an extension” but a permanent law to regulate the growth of the tourism sector. He added that no more land in the islands would be classified for touristic use “because there is already enough vacant”.
Island smuggler caught
A MAN was arrested when trying to smuggle 25kg of hashish into Tenerife at Santa Cruz port. Guardia Civil arrested the 46-year-old Gran Canaria resident on suspicion of a crime against public health.
Second baby for Cruz
PENELOPE CRUZ, in answer to increasing speculation, has confirmed through her publicist that she is expecting again. The 38-year-old actress and husband Javier Bardem say they are “tremendously happy and excited” about the imminent arrival of their second child. Penelope, who first met Javier when starring in Spanish Jamon Jamon 20 years ago, started dating in 2007 and married in July 2010.

MEMBERS of the Swallows Club took themselves off to Santa Cruz on Tuesday, and they had the time of their lives at the Carnival.
The Swallows meet at the Apolo Centre in Los Cristianos on Mondays, and organiser Carole Hart said: “Ninety-eight of us went and, happily, we didn’t manage to lose anyone. “But we did return with about 600 photos!
CARNIVAL is now drawing to a close; on Wednesday morning Santa Cruz public workers gathered a total of 58.6 tons of waste following the big parade on Tuesday in the island’s capital. In the preceding days there was also plenty to clear up, Saturday 19.9 tons, Sunday 41.5 tons, Monday 33.4 tons in total 159 tons of rubbish. It may seem a lot but the carnival goers have been recycling as well their packaging, cans and bottles. 630,000 square meters of road have been mechanically cleaned
It was great day and a wonderful atmosphere, and we even bumped into ex-footballer Chris Kamara. “He has a holiday home over here and is a well-known visitor and such a gentleman. “He was lovely and patient when people recognised him, and was happy to pose for pictures with everyone.” Chris, now a popular presenter and analyst with Sky Sport’s Soccer Saturday, qualifies as a Swallow, so perhaps he’ll be the Swallows’ next big signing!

assistants, 6 others and 1 mechanic). There are also up to 36 vehicles all performing different roles everything from sweep carts to a mobile workshop unit. Similarly, in the week
following the Sunday Piñata thorough cleaning will be made in all areas that have been subjected to greater number of people during the Carnival celebrations. The work will include the removal of all debris and stains that have been left, as well as an additional service of collection of waste generated in the Central Zone and other commercial areas. This service will be provided from 18th to 23rd February during the day.

An insurance warning for all tourists THE Foreign Office has warned that visitors to Spain could face being billed for thousands of pounds for medical treatment if they are taken ill or injured while staying with friends and family.
Yet 10% of those aged 55 or more admit that they sometimes fail to take out travel insurance before going on holiday - even though more than half are suffering from a medical condition. Foreign & Commonwealth Office research reveals that 35% of this age group do not take out travel insurance because they are “only going on a short break”. Around 27% say it’s too expensive, while 18% believe they don’t need insurance because they are visiting friends or family. Many also feel they can avoid buying a policy because they are covered by their bank. Equally concerning is that 21% who do have travel insurance then risk invalidating it by failing to declare an existing condition because they are on medication to manage it. And some 15% admit they wouldn’t update their insurance policy if they developed a medical condition, or were prescribed new drugs for an existing condition. Every year, around
5,000 British nationals, find themselves seeking assistance from consular staff in Spain. Some end up with life-changing bills of many thousands for expensive medical treatment, or specialist repatriation to the UK. Mark Simmonds, Minister for Consular Policy, said: “People say ‘It won’t happen to me’, or ‘I’ll be fine’, but these are risky assumptions to make when deciding whether or not to take out comprehensive travel insurance. “Our consular staff around the world deal with thousands of cases each year which prove that things can and do go wrong. “Being prepared can mean the difference between the holiday of a lifetime and a holiday from hell. Being unwell abroad is stressful enough without the added pressure of having to find thousands of pounds to pay for treatment.” Dave Thomas, Consular Regional Director for Spain, added: “If you have over-55s visiting you

this year, tell them to get insurance before they travel. “Taking out a comprehensive policy and declaring any medical condition may be an added expense, but it’s a small investment compared with what you could end up paying if something goes wrong.” A spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers said: “Travel insurance is a must for all holidaymakers. “Policies are widely available for people of all ages, but the insurance industry recognises that some older people need help finding cover. “Under the Age Agreement, which we developed with the Government and the British Insurance Brokers’ Association, older people unable to find cover at the first firm they approach should be directed to an alternative provider, who will be able to offer insurance, or to a signposting service.” A British Embassy spokesman added: “All British visitors
to Spain, including over-55s, also need a European Health Insurance Card, known as an EHIC. “It is free, and you can apply on the NHS website, or by calling 0845 606 2030. If you then have an accident or become ill, you can get the necessary, state-provided medical healthcare at reduced cost, or sometimes free. “But it is important to realise that an EHIC does NOT cover all your medical costs, private treatment or repatriation to the UK. You still need travel insurance to ensure you are fully covered for all eventualities. “Many people think an EHIC is enough and don’t take out insurance. They will greatly regret it when they are forced to pay thousands of pounds for an air ambulance back to the UK, or have to pay for extra accommodation to stay in Spain to look after a hospitalised family member or friend they are travelling with.” British Consulates can: *Provide information about transferring money *Give you a list of local doctors, lawyers, interpreters or funeral directors *Contact friends and family back home for you if you wish *Issue you with replacement travel documents British Consulates cannot: *Get you better treatment in hospital than is given to local people *Provide medical repatriation or cover the costs of medical bills or repatriation *Pay any other bills. or give you money *Make travel arrangements for you

THE EDITOR SAYS... Email: editor@canarianweekly.com
Inform, not scare THE aim of my editorial this week is to inform and increase awareness, as opposed to scare and frighten. We live on a holiday island, where thousands of holiday-makers flock here daily for a period of time, with money in their pockets and relaxation on their mind. This is the key – individuals change their behaviour on holiday and, for whatever reason, act differently. Answer me this: would you leave your handbag or wallet open in the trolley at your local Tesco? Would you leave all the windows and doors open in your house when you pop out? Would you walk into the middle of your city centre with all your worldly wealth in your bag? Would you leave your wallet, cigarettes and phone on the bar in your local Wetherspoons? No, so why do it while on holiday? This week, I’ve been informed by many people of various pickpocketing incidents across the Island. As I mentioned, my
intention is not to scare but make you aware and think before you go out. Think, “what do I really need to take with me?” While the Olympic Games were on in London, thousands of people were “targeted” every day by organised gangs, according to reports. The BBC has a very enlightening article on its website www.bbc. co.uk/news/uk-18798792 which is definitely worth a read. Football tactics come into play, and it takes just one second to become the victim with a move the article quotes as the “Ronaldinho” the footballer who dances when he scores. A man approaches with a map and asks for directions, while another two pretend to be drunk, swinging their arms and forcing you, the target, to dance. They normally work in pairs, or as a trio: one will be the pickpocket, another the distracter, while the third person does the running. Please be aware of your belongings, and don’t become the next victim.

Brit mum gets payout after Tenerife tumble A North Lanarkshire mum has received £37,000 in compensation after being knocked unconscious when she slipped on holiday in Tenerife. Sylvia McNicholl, 49, was on the first night of her fortnight family holiday in May 2008 when she unfortunately slipped on a puddle of water as she went to help her three-year-old to the toilet. It appears the water had leaked from an aircon unit that was not properly maintained at a hotel in Costa Adeje, Tenerife. The incident
left her unconscious and in need of stitches. Mrs. McNicholl told her local newspaper she has also experienced lasting effects from the fall, including headaches and dizziness, and an impaired sense of smell and taste. She told the Herald Scotland: “One minute I’m getting up to help my son; the next I’m on the floor barely conscious with blood rushing from my head. “It was a really nasty injury but it could have been so much worse. The holiday was ruined
It remains a going concern in southern France, Portugal and some South American countries, where people still flock to the arenas to witness the onesided man-againstbeast conflicts. And though mainland Spain still stages around 2,000 fights a year, spectator numbers are dropping. If the idea becomes law, it could also provide tax breaks for bullfighting promoters. Under the proposal, the spectacle would be promoted by the authorities, who would also push the UN to recognise it as part of Spain’s cultural heritage. A parliamentary commission will now fine-tune proposed
legislation, and a vote could take place later this year. The tradition of killing bulls in a ring, considered barbaric by long-standing opponents, dates back some 4,000 years and is
thought to have been made popular by the Romans. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s Government rescinded a six-year, live TV ban on bullfighting last September.

Airline sackings go ahead despite threatened strikes
IBERIA, on the brink of 15 oneday strikes over staff sackings, has begun procedures to offload 3,807 people (19% of its workforce).
And the Spanish airline has also asked unions to drop their protests strikes against the sackings. Union sources say the departments most affected will be the ground staff (about 2,640), followed by cabin crew (around 760) and pilots (some 320). The dismissals will go ahead between 14th March and 31st
December. Of the ground staff affected, 360 are employed at Madrid’s Barajas airport, 470 at “other airports”. 40 are in the cargo department, 390 in Iberia’s commercial department and 150 in finance. The sources said the dismissals will also hit about 550 employees in the maintenance division, and over 70 people in the Human Resources department. Iberia had initially suggested a reduction of 4,500 jobs, but announced its new plans on Tuesday to their employees, union representatives and the Ministry of Employment
and Social Security. It left Iberia and the unions with a consultation period of 30 days from that day to negotiate following three months of unsuccessful meetings between the sides. The company has put on the table alternatives to achieve profitability targets without resorting to lay-offs. Iberia reminded unions that between 2008 and September 2012, the company lost more than 850 million euros, which has forced them to take “drastic” cost-reduction and improvement measures to remain viable. Despite the
announcement, the company believes the “best position is to reach an agreement” and that it will attend all meetings with union representatives. The company has suggested to union leaders: “Leave the customers out of the infighting because things have to be resolved at the negotiating table and not through strikes, which aggravate the company losses.” of the company.” If the strikes do go ahead, Iberia officials say they will “put all measures in their power to mitigate the effects of strikes in February and March”.

nary Islands, Ricardo Fernandez de la Puente Armas, explained that “the figure has reduced however, January 2013 has become the third best start of the year in the history of the Canaries, following 1999, 2012.” Similarly, the Deputy Minister of Tourism reiterated that “the elimination of subsidies to air taxes negatively affected tourist arrivals to Canaries we have repeatedly stressed
to the Government State“. Gran Canaria received in the month of January 2013, the arrival of 288,242 foreign passengers, a reduction of 3,011 in January 2012, which is 1.03 percent less. The new transparency law was approved in Parliament last March but has undergone numerous amendments since. Last week President Rajoy was facing allegation in relation to financial funds. Over the course of the financial years which data has been released, the President of the Government paid a total sum of 840,131 euros to the Spanish Treasury as Personal Income Tax and
another 30,161 euros as Wealth Tax. The tax information provided does not include details on the subsistence allowance he receives, as these amounts are tax exempt. The same is also the case for all other Members of the Lower House of Parliament. Besides his ordinary income from wages and the management of his assets, Mariano Rajoy only received two other extraordinary income amounts: payment for having been VicePresident of the Government (which he received during part of 2003, 2004 and part of 2005); and an advance payment for the publication of the book entitled “En Confianza” (the net profits from which, after paying expenses and tax, were donated to various charity organisations).

Fears over missing teenage Brit SEARCHERS are battling against time to find a British backpacker missing in the rough and unforgiving Queensland Outback. Teenager Sam Woodhead, a health fanatic, wanted to bump up his fitness levels. Police launched a land and air search for the 18-year-old after he failed to return from his expedition on Tuesday evening. He had set off from his workplace at the Upshot Station homestead, about 80 miles from the far-flung Queensland town of Longreach. Officers fear for his safety because of his lack of familiarity with the property, which sprawls across 3,200 acres. “Lack of water, the heat, venomous snakes and injury are probably our greatest concern,” said Sergeant Dave Perry. He said the missing
teenager had undertaken some survival training, and added: “He may have been using some of the rougher country and the
jump-ups to improve his fitness.” Planes, motorbikes and four-wheel drives are being used in the search.
Local people have also been combing the area on foot and horseback, and an emergency services helicopter carrying medical staff
has been sent out. His sister, Rebecca Woodhead, wrote on her Facebook page: “If anyone hears from my brother, please contact
me ASAP. “Would be a great birthday present if my brother would just turn up and ask what all the fuss is about!”
Business is booming for hot-shots United MANCHESTER United officials, delighted with their team’s 1-1 at Real Madrid in Spain on Wednesday, had more good news to celebrate yesterday (Thursday). The club, who meet Real again at home in the second leg of their Champion’s League last-16 tie, are on course to reach their financial targets this year. Pre-tax profit at the Premier League leaders was up 47.9% to £28.4m in the three months to the end of December. United signed six new deals with companies across the world, helping to boost their sponsorship revenue by almost 50% to £20.8m. Vice-chairman Ed Woodward said: “We have achieved record revenue in the second quarter, driven by our

commercial operation, which continues to experience extremely strong growth,
particularly in sponsorship.” But though the club’s total revenue increased
by over 8% to £110.1m, their gross debt was up slightly at £366.6m, compared with £359.7m
in the first quarter. It is the second time the club have reported financial results since floating on the New York Stock Exchange last year. Following the controversial flotation, the Glazer family paid down some of the debt, resulting in it falling below £400m for the first time since they bought the club in 2005. Manchester United also confirmed their one-third stake in MUTV, which is owned by BSkyB, the parent company of Sky News. And that means they now has full control of the television channel. The club claim to be the world’s bestsupported football team, with more than 650 million followers across the world.

M&S volunteer army Marks & Spencer (M&S) is calling on its customers and employees to don their wellies again and volunteer to help their local community by cleaning Britain’s beaches and canals. With the support of the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) and the Canal & River Trust (CRT), this year’s M&S Big Beach Clean-up will take place between 22nd and 28th April and it is hoped around 8,000 people will get involved. The target is to clear more than 15 tonnes of litter – more than the weight of a double decker bus. According to the MCS there are two pieces of litter on every metre of our coastline, most of it plastic. The harmful impacts of plastic on the UK’s marine life are becoming ever more apparent and the MCS is concerned that plastic pieces are found in the digestive systems of fish including Whiting, John Dory and Gurnard. Most of the litter collected will be common items such as fishing nets, ropes and bottles tops. However last year M&S beach cleaners found an array of unusual items including a set of false teeth and half a sofa in Edinburgh, a cabinet near Liverpool, a ten-pin bowling ball in Deal, a carpet in Clacton and a pink thong on Shoreham beach. The cleans will take place at 113 beaches (open to M&S employees and customers) in the UK and Ireland - including Swansea, Blackpool, Southend, Aberdeen, Coleraine, Dublin and Portsmouth - and 50 canal locations (M&S employees only) including the Grand Union Canal in London, the Leeds & Liverpool Canal in Leeds and the Birmingham & Fazley Canal in Birmingham. Customers that register in advance
Page 14
at www.mcsuk.org/ foreverfish will receive a money-off at M&S voucher on the day of their beach clean. Last year over 6,000 people (4,000 M&S employees and 2,000 M&S customers) volunteered and collected 3,200 bin bags full of litter after cleaning over 100km of beaches and canals. The bags weighed in at over 11.5 tonnes. This included 12,800 wrappers and 2,850 tin cans. Sacha Berendji, Director of Retail at Marks & Spencer, said: “Our Big Beach Cleanup is a great way for customers and M&S colleagues to volunteer, help their local community and protect our precious marine life. It’s a great fun, outdoor activity that is rewarding in more ways than one. Beach cleaners are helping the environment, their community and those that register in advance get a £5 money-off voucher.” Samantha Fanshawe, MCS Chief Executive, said: “M&S’ employee and customer support for beach cleans last year really helped us to turn a corner in the fight against beach litter. It is fantastic to have their support again this year and we’re hoping for a massive turn out from the public to make this the biggest event ever and to remove even more litter from our precious marine environment”. Simon Salem, Marketing Director at the CRT, said: “The canal network is a national treasure and a haven for many endangered and much loved species. By supporting the new Trust and our waterways, the M&S Big Beach Clean-up recognises the value of the waterways for fish and other wildlife. By donating their time, M&S employees will help make a real difference to the canal that’s on their doorstep.”
Euro zone slips GLOBAL equity markets fell on Thursday on news the euro zone slipped deeper into recession than expected in late 2012, while the dollar extended gains against the euro after data showed U.S. jobless claims fell more than expected last week.
The euro zone’s 17-country economy shrank 0.6 percent, with Germany contract-
ing 0.6 percent on the quarter, official data for gross domestic product showed, marking its worst performance since the global financial crisis was raging in 2009. Germany is expected to rebound but the figures suggest the bloc as a whole could remain in recession in the first quarter of this year, despite a recent jump in market sentiment as fears that the currency bloc could fall apart faded. Stocks on Wall Street followed European equity markets lower, with news that that Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRKb.N) and
3G Capital will pay $23 billion in cash to buy food maker H.J. Heinz (HNZ.N) unable to turn investor sentiment. Berkshire and the private equity firm will pay $72.50 per share, a 19 percent premium to the stock’s all-time high. “The market has weakened because of the GDP numbers,” said Barclays commodities analyst Miswin Mahesh. “It’s been a macro sell-off this morning with the GDP numbers coming out rather than any fundamental move in itself. Most asset classes have sold.” The euro fell 0.8 percent to 1.3344 against
the dollar. Against the yen, the dollar was down 0.2 percent at 93.18. Oil prices initially fell after euro zone figures curbed expectations of accelerating global growth and higher energy demand. The stronger-than-expected drop in U.S. jobless claims last week helped buoy U.S. crude markets, and Brent rebounded to trade at break-even. Brent crude oil fell 4 cents to $117.84 a barrel. April Brent futures became the frontmonth contract on Thursday. U.S. crude rose 63 cents to $97.64.
Shock takeover for Heinz HEINZ, renowned makers of baked beans and tomato ketchup, has agreed to an £18bn takeover which could, potentially, affect thousands of its UK workers. Billionaire US investor Warren Buffett is part of the investment consortium behind the deal. Heinz shareholders will receive £47 in cash for each share of common stock they own according to the
new owners, who have assumed the company’s debt. Heinz is an American company with headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and it will remain there, say Berkshire Hathaway, which is Buffett’s investment vehicle, and Burger King-owner 3G Capital. Mr Buffett told American broadcaster CNBC: “It’s our kind of company. It’s ketchup has been around for
more than a century I’ve sampled it many times.” Union officials representing thousands of UK workers, employed by Heinz at five sites, are seeking urgent talks on jobs’ reassurance. Unite national officer Jennie Formby said yesterday: “We recognise the commitment given by Berkshire Hathaway that it will be business as usual following the surprise change of
ownership announced today. “But the 3,000 Unite members who work for Heinz in the UK will want more detailed assurances that their jobs and sites will remain secure. “Unite will be seeking an early meeting with senior management to allow us to explore in greater detail what impact, if any, this acquisition will have for the UK business.”

Peugeot hits rock-bottom CAR-MAKERS Peugeot Citroen has experienced the worst result in its history - a huge 5bn-euro (£4.29bn) loss for 2012. But the top automaker in France said it had built the foundations for recovery after cleaning up its balance sheet, and implementing a tough restructuring plan. Peugeot blamed the results on a previouslyannounced 4.7bn euro (£4bn) asset writedown last year, and the crisis in the European car market. The loss compared with a profit of 588mn euros (£505m) in 2011, while revenue for the year fell 5.2% to 55.4bn (£47.6bn) euros. Chief executive Philippe Varin said
in a statement: “The results reflect the deterioration of the automotive industry environment in Europe But the foundations for our rebound have been laid.” According to What Car? editor-in-chief Chas Hallet, the firm suffers from a combination of problems. “Peugeot Citroen is losing out in several ways, Mr Hallet told Sky News. “For a start, its models mainly compete with each other, which makes little sense,” “It is being undercut on price and quality by rivals, including the incredibly-strong Korean makers. “And, unlike many of its rivals, it does not sell cars globally and so missing the advantage of the scale that provides. “Furthermore, it can’t
really compete with the might of the VW group, in Europe or anywhere else.” The results were worse than forecast by analysts, overshadowing the previous record loss of 1.2bn euros (£1bn) in 2009.Net debt stood at 3bn euros (£2.5bn), admitted the company.. On Monday, the European Commission authorised France to shore up Peugeot temporarily to the tune of a six-month, 1.2bn euro guarantee. Peugeot Citroen, which has a strategic tie-up with US company General Motors (GM) itself bailed-out by the Obama administration - is in the midst of a restructure, involving deep job cuts. Markets reacted positively to the balance sheet announcement, with shares up 5% in early trading.
Servants spill the ‘Pride’ beans, behind the scenes A NOVEL recounting the story of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice from the servants’ view has become an international sensation. So much so that author Jo Baker’s Longbourn has been accepted by US and UK publishers, and the film rights have also been sold. The 39-year-old drew her inspiration from her family’s years in service. “Aware of that English class thing, Pride and Prejudice begins to read a little differently,” she said. The book traces a romance between a newly-arrived footman and a housemaid in the Bennet household, which runs parallel to the love story between Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet. Two centuries after the death of Jane Austin, Ms Baker said: “Jane Austen was my
first experience of grown-up literature. “But as I read and reread her books, I began to become aware that if I’d been living at the time, I wouldn’t have got to go to the ball - I would have been stuck at home with the sewing.” A delighted Clare Alexander, Ms Baker’s agent, said: “It all happened in a week or so. I sent out the manuscript and US publisher Knopf quickly bought it. Then, two days later, it was bought by Doubleday in the UK. “The next day, the film rights had gone, and by the Friday, we had signed up two foreign translations.” She added: “Longbourn is a piece of art that emerges from a much-loved classic. It is immensely satisfying to have worked with a talented writer from the outset, and to see her take flight. This will make her a literary star.” Film rights have been
15th February - 21st February 2013
bought by Random House Studio and Focus Features, which distributed the 2005 film version of Pride and Prejudice in the US. James Schamus, of Focus Features, said: “Jo Baker fully inhabits the lives of her characters, and in Longbourn, they are ones who previously existed in the background only. She has fashioned a tale of a calibre that film-makers dream about.” Jane Austen novels continue to inspire adaptations and spinoffs both in book and film form, 200 years after her death. A contemporary version of Sense and Sensibility, written by Joanna Trollope, will be published later this year as one of six Austen re-workings by modern-day writers. Longbourn will be published in hardback and e-book format later this year, with a paperback release to follow in 2014.

Can Washu be next big Olympic sport? WRESTLING, surprisingly ditched by the International Olympic Committee from the 2020 Games, could be replaced by the littleknown Wushu - a form of kung fu! The IOC made its decision this week in Lausanne, Switzerland, after assessing the performance of all 26 sports at the London Games. There is a slight chance that wrestling may be reprieved when the IOC meets in Buenos Aires this September to ratify its choice. Britain’s chief wrestling executive, Colin Nicholson, said: “This is extremely disappointing. But Great Britain will not lose focus in the next Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. “We will be looking to deliver success there. We have two athletes who, we believe, are genuine medal contenders. “We are fortunate that we are a Commonwealth sport, so our athletes will continue aspiring towards 2014 and 2018. “In the meantime,
Page 16
we will remain hopeful that the IOC may give wrestling another chance to remain part of the Games.” Wushu will be competing for an Olympic spot against seven other sports, including squash, roller sports and climbing. Mark Adams, IOC spokesman, said: “This is not the end of the process but purely a recommendation. It’s not about what’s wrong with wrestling but what is good for the Games.” But Nicholson stressed: “Olympic inclusion is absolutely essential to our sport. It is at the centre of everything we do, so all we can do is relax and work to continually to modernise the sport and raise its awareness.” Rugby sevens and golf, a multi-millionpound industry, will be included in the 2016 Games programme, and the IOC will also decide in September between Istanbul, Madrid and Tokyo as hosts for the 2020 Games.
THE POPE SIMPLY CAN’T CARRY ON! THE Pope, whose resignation on Monday created shockwaves around the world, has appeared in public for the first time since his announcement.
Benedict XVI, received a lengthy, standing ovation when he entered a packed audience hall in the Vatican, with applause from a tearful audience. He repeated in Italian what he had told cardinals on Monday in Latin: that, at 85, he just did not have the strength to continue. “I did this in full liberty, for the good of the church,” he told his supporters, asking them to “continue to pray for the Pope and the Church”. He late, celebrated an Ash Wednesday Mass in St Peter’s Basilica - his last public Mass and
one of his last Papal engagements. Traditionally, the Mass is held in the Santa Sabina Church, on Rome’s Aventine Hill. But it was moved, out of respect for the outgoing pontiff , and to accommodate the crowd of pilgrims wanting to mark the end of his eight-year rule - one of the shortest in the Church’s modern history. “It was an important concelebration, and the last led by the Holy Father in San Pietro,”
said Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi. Key cardinals attended as the papal conclave began gathering in Rome to elect the next head of the 1.2 billion global Roman Catholics. No date has been set for the secret conclave, which will meet in the Sistine Chapel under Michelangelo’s famous ceiling frescoes, but it could come within days of when Pope Benedict stands down, on 28th February. Father Lombardi expects a new Pope to
be in place in time for Easter, which falls on 31st March. Tarcisio Bertone, the Secretary of State, will govern the Church during the transition. Pope Benedict’s decision to quit - the first pontiff in 700 years to resign simply because he felt unable to carry on - sparked rumours galore over his health. These were driven by revelations that he’d had an operation to replace the batteries in his pacemaker three months ago. Some observers saw his decision as a bid to avoid the fate of his predecessor, John Paul II, whose drawn-out and debilitating illness was played out on the world’s stage. But Father Lombardi insisted: “The Pope is well and his soul is serene. He did not resign the pontificate because he is ill, but because of the fragility that comes with old age.”

New horsemeat scandal
THE scandal over horsemeat replacing beef in readymeals moved up a notch this week when investigators suspended operations at two British meat plants. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) pinpointed plants in West Yorkshire and West Wales on Tuesday over suspicions that horse flesh might have been sold as beef. Police raided the Peter Boddy slaughterhouse in Todmorden, and Aberystwyth-based Farmbox Meats, amid claims that horsemeat was being put into the food chain as beef for kebabs and burgers. Mr Boddy said he would co-operate with FSA officers and stressed that they had not raided his premises. “They are welcome to visit whenever they want. They just wanted to see my records, which I will be showing them.” Dafydd Raw-Rees, director of Farmbox, said he had been operating a licensed red-meat cutting plant for three years, adding: “There is nothing we have done that is not totally permissible. “The Minister for Environment should be ashamed of himself for destroying a good,
reputable business.” Andrew Rhodes, director of operations at the Food Standards Agency (FSA), said: “I ordered an audit of all horse-producing abattoirs in the UK after this issue first arose last month. “I was shocked to uncover what appears to be a blatant misleading of consumers.” And Alun Davies, Welsh Government Minister for Agriculture said: “I will be appalled if these allegations are proven.” Horse DNA had been discovered in raids on processing plants in Ireland and Yorkshire last month, ands these
new raids have shifted the recent focus from Europe. Environment Secretary Owen Patterson said it would be unacceptable for any UK firm to be involved, and that he would expect the full force of the law to be applied. Tesco dropped French company Comigel after discovering that its range of spaghetti bolognaise ready-meals contained more than 60% horsemeat. Frozen-food firm Findus and Aldi have already removed certain foods after discovering they were supplied with products by Comigel containing horsemeat.
Horse DNA had been discovered in raids on processing plants in Ireland and Yorkshire last month. The new raids shifted the recent focus from Europe. Lamb ready-meals also came under scrutiny as a senior scientist warned that they could be contaminated with horse DNA. Dr Mark Woolfe, a former executive of the FSA, said: ¨”If I were a retailer, I would be looking carefully at my lamb products.” He also suggested the scandal had been triggered by a European decision to outlaw cheap British beef, known as disinsinewed meat
(DSM). Mr Woolfe said the ban forced many to change from UK to foreign meat suppliers. But the FSA insisted there was no evidence of any lamb meals being affected. Jim Walker, a former chairman of Quality Meat Scotland, has called for the Irish meatprocessing sector to be cleaned up, claiming the country’s low-cost horsemeat had created a temptation for others. There were further dramatic developments in the escalating crisis on Tuesday when Waitrose became the latest store to withdraw a food range, this time beef meatballs, after
tests revealed they might contain pork. Professor Alan Reilly, chief executive of the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI), said: “There is a plausible explanation for the presence of pig DNA in these products, because meat from different animals is processed in the same meat plants.” But he added: “There is no clear explanation for the presence of horse DNA in products emanating from meat plants that do not use horsemeat in their production process. “In Ireland, it is not in our culture to eat horsemeat and, therefore, we do not expect to find it in a burger. “Likewise, for some religious groups, or people who abstain from eating pig meat, the presence of traces of pig DNA is unacceptable.” Investigations began two months ago when beefburgers on sale in UK and Irish Republic supermarkets became contaminated with horsemeat. Irish food safety officials, who carried out tests, said the products were stocked by several chains, including Tesco and Iceland stores in the UK. They agreed there was no human health risk, but the burgers were removed anyway - as they have been in Iceland’s Tenerife stores.
Barclays to cut jobs - but not its bonuses BARCLAYS Bank, which has announced 3,700 redundancies amid plans to save £1.7bn, still set aside £1.85bn for last year’s staff bonuses. Some 1,600 jobs have already been wiped out this year in the investment banking business. Of the latest round of cuts, 1,800 will come from its corporate and investment bank and the remainder from the European retail and business banking. On average, investment bank pay-outs are £54,100, and the average bonus across the group is £13,300 - below the 2011 levels. Antony Jenkins, who
became chief executive of Britain’s secondlargest bank last August, waived his 2012 bonus. But he admitted the company had made mistakes. Unlike some of its rivals, Barclays did not receive a Government bailout, and Mr Jenkins said: “We’ve got to do business in the right way - the right business in the right way. “I’ll be very honest - we did get things wrong at Barclays in the past, as people in the industry did. We were too short-term focused, too self-serving and, on occasion, we were too aggressive.” He also warned that
15th February - 21st February 2013
the bank would not be as profitable in the future as it had been. His comments came as the company reports
adjusted pre-tax profit of £7.048bn for 2012 - a rise of more than 26% on 2011. Its investment bank
performed even better, with profit before tax up 37% to £4.063bn. Statutory pre-tax profit, which includes the fund set aside to compensate customers mis-sold payment protection insurance, among other charges, was £248m. Mr Jenkins revealed the outcome of a strategic review at the bank - known as Project Transform - which will see the group’s total cost-base reduced by £1.7bn to £16.8bn in 2015. The bank also confirmed that its controversial taxavoidance unit would close, and Mr Jenkins added in a statement: “We intend to change
what Barclays does and how we do it. “And we have set out clear commitments against which our progress can be measured.” The bank’s profit comes despite a difficult year at the bank, which saw its reputation and that of the entire banking industry - come under pressure. Last week, Barclays said it had increased funds set aside for misselling to consumers and businesses by another £1bn, taking the total to £2.6bn. The bank was also fined £290m for manipulating the interbank borrowing rate, Libor, last summer.

Old Yorkie hits golden jackpot! JANUARY was one of Accion del Sol’s best-ever months for adoptions, with 53 dogs being rehomed - 28 in Germany and 25 here in Tenerife. But more over 60 dogs, mostly in a terrible state, were also brought to the Granadilla refuge last month. Finding people to adopt dogs is extremely hard in the current crisis and Marion Gonzalez, who runs the refuge, spends a lot of her time and energy to find new owners. One lucky dog is a 10-year-old Yorkie, who had heartworm and was very sick, but now has a loving home. Many people want a puppy, which is natural, even though the older dogs are just as loyal. And Accion has many dogs hoping to find a home, so if you are looking to adopt one, please pop in for a visit. Each animal is fully updated with vaccinations, and has been sterilised/ castrated, microchipped, de-flead and is free of heartworm. Next Sunday (24th Feb) sees the resumption of
Accion’s weekly walks, starting from in front of the Arona Grand in Los Cristianos at 4pm. You can walk with your own dog or treat one from the refuge. Please call 922 778 630 and offer your services. This is a good chance to make new friends and enjoy some gentle exercise with our fourlegged friends. The group will walk along the promenade to Compostella Beach, where one of the many bars will surely allow them to stop for a welldeserved drink before strolling back. Accion del Sol is always looking for people to walk some of the refuge dogs. If you have some spare time and would like to volunteer, please call to make a few animals really happy. And if you would like to assist us in any way, please call 922 778 630 for more information, or call in. The refuge is situated at the Granadilla Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to the ecological park ITER, by the windmills.

Let’s Dance For Comic Relief BBC1, 18.50 Tim Vine and a host of other stars will be donning their dancing shoes in the first episode of entertainment extravaganza Let’s Dance For Comic Relief. Fronted once again by Alex Jones and Steve Jones, the showdown kicks off and will span four weeks, with three star-studded Saturday night heats culminating in a grand final on the 9th March. Each week, viewers at home will get the chance to vote for their favourite act who will gain a place in the final. Also appearing throughout the series will be Ricky Hatton, Nina Conti and Jon Culshaw, among others. Once again, the dancing celebrities will be judged each week by a panel of top TV personalities that will feature such comic legends as Frank Skinner and Jo Brand. Each week, the judges will choose from the runners up to join the viewer’s favourite in the final. There will also be a music performance from a chart-topping artist each week. Last year’s series, which raised money for Sport Relief saw Only Way Is Essex stars Amy Childs and Harry Derbridge battle it out with legendary skier Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards, as Scott Mills and Olly Murs took on comedian Omid Djalili. Wiping the dance floor with them all was Roland Rivron, who stole audience hearts and votes and won the show with a dazzling routine to Fatboy Slim’s Weapon Of Choice.

Coldbrook Farm. Historic houses, both humble and grand, have all played their part in the story of Britain. Today many are at risk and some in danger of being lost forever. Caroline Quentin returns to follow the fortunes of six more properties, all facing their own struggle for survival, all with committed new owners wanting to turn them into their dream homes. Coldbrook Farm is a 17th century Grade II listed Welsh farmhouse. Run-down, off the beaten track surrounded by working farm buildings in a muddy yard, its lavish carved Tudor timberwork is a clue that there is more to this farmhouse than meets the eye. As owners Bill and Kim grapple with the challenges of mixing old and modern, architectural expert Kieran Long and historian Kate Williams dig deep into the archives uncovering evidence that points towards Coldbrook's possible links with one of the most powerful lords in Britain.

Built 500 years before Stonehenge, the temple has triggered new thoughts about the beliefs of Neolithic people, turning the map of ancient Britain upside down. This vast site, undisturbed until now, is set within one of the most important ancient landscapes in the world. There have been some incredible finds, including the first ever discovery of Neolithic painted wall decorations and even the pigments and paint pots used by Stone Age artists. This archaeological evidence is brought to life using special effects, creating a threedimensional model of the entire temple that allows Neil to walk inside and understand just how it might have been used.

21:00.........Her Majesty's CW Prison: Aylesbury CHOICE Observational documentary series filmed over five months in the UK's most notorious young offenders institution. HMP Aylesbury houses some of the most dangerous criminals in Britain, including murderers, rapists, violent gang members and paedophiles. One in five of the inmates is serving a life or indeterminate sentence, but what makes this prison exceptional and disturbing is that the oldest among them is just 21. London gangs are dominant here, which leaves young men from other parts of the country feeling isolated and vulnerable. Many have to be segregated for their own protection, while harder cases can expect to end up in an even more secure 'prison within the prison'.

Her Majesty’s Prison: Aylesbury ITV1, 21.00
Aylesbury Prison in Buckinghamshire, home to some of the most dangerous young criminals in Britain, has allowed an exclusive insight into life for prisoners and staff for a new documentary series on ITV- Her Majesty’s Prison: Aylesbury. Murderers, rapists, gangsters and paedophiles are serving time here. So serious are some of their offences, that one in five is serving life or an indeterminate sentence to protect the public. What’s frightening is that the oldest prisoners are just 21. Officers engage in a daily battle of wits, to ensure they keep control. They must also try to help rebuild the fractured lives of these young men. Programme makers, Wild Pictures, who have won acclaim for powerful documentaries on Strangeways, Holloway and Wormwood Scrubs prisons, were given extraordinary access to film over four months, interviewing hundreds of prisoners and officers for the two part documentary.

Death In Paradise BBC1, 21.00 As Hurricane Irma approaches Saint Marie, the islanders are battening down the hatches. However, while everyone else is taking cover, the team are called to the murder scene of a young meteorologist, Leo Downs. The crime scene seems to have been staged to make Leo’s death appear like an accident caused in the hurricane. Plus, the plot thickens when it emerges that the victim had told the University Dean that he had something important to tell her, but was dead before he had the chance. Leo’s colleagues all have potential motives for the murder, from his heartbroken ex-girlfriend to an academic rival, but all have data collected at the time of murder. Could one of the researchers be faking their figures? With the hurricane fast approaching, time is not on the team’s side. Will they uncover the vital evidence before the storm hits?

Meet The Izzards BBC1, 21.00
Eddie Izzard - actor, comedian, transvestite and marathonrunner extraordinaire - is about to embark on a remarkable journey using his own DNA as the road map. Locked within each of us is a genetic history book that reveals not only our deep ancestry, but also the migration of mankind across the globe. Using recent scientific breakthroughs and the help of geneticists, Eddie will unlock the secrets of where he - and we - came from. It will make Eddie the first person in Britain to use his own DNA to retrace his ancestors’ journey across thousands of miles and nearly 200,000 years of history. A two-part special screening on consecutive days, this is the epic story of humanity’s journey from our shared origins in Africa 10,000 generations ago all the way to Eddie Izzard. In episode one, Eddie will explore his maternal ancestral journey – a trip that will be close to his heart, as Eddie’s mum died when he was a young boy. It’s a voyage that will take him from Southern Africa to the Red Sea, on to Turkey, and up through Italy and Scandinavia before finally reaching Britain on a journey he hopes will make him feel more connected to his mum as he bridges the gap between his genetic and own life history. En route, he’ll meet local communities with whom he shares genetic markers - distant cousins separated by thousands of years of history. Eddie begins on the outskirts of Namibia’s Kalahari Desert where he meets the San Bushmen and learns to make fire. He might set tongues wagging with his painted nails, but Eddie is also moved to discover how at home he feels with his most distant ancestral cousins. He travels to Djibouti and goes fishing with a local fisherwoman at the point where the Red Sea narrows and where modern humans probably first left Africa about 60,000 years ago. Here he’s just 35kms from the Arabian country of Yemen, where it’s thought modern humans first stepped outside Africa and where Eddie himself was born. In Turkey, Eddie learns about the birth of agriculture and why he’s got blue eyes, and stays in the same hotel room that his parents honeymooned in. Travelling up into Europe, he visits Pompeii, before heading to Denmark to meet his distant Scandinavian relatives. Finally, it’s on to England where he’s introduced to two sisters who share an ancestor with Eddie as recently as 20 generations ago, before learning about his own unique genetic marker. In the next episode, Eddie will retrace the journey of his paternal DNA, and discover how the male Izzards battled with the Ice Age and slept with an alien species.

Following on from the acclaimed one-off comedy drama last year, Ricky Gervais presents a new six-part series about Derek Noakes, a tender, innocent man whose love for his job and the people he cares for in the retirement home where he works shines through. Also starring Karl Pilkington, Kerry Godliman and David Earl. In episode four, Derek decides to sell some of his autographs in order to raise money for the retirement home. But the shop that sells autographed photos isn't overly impressed by Derek's collection mainly because he can't actually remember who the signatures belong to. An outing to the beach for some of the residents means a blissful afternoon in the sunshine, while Kev leaves his mark at the seaside by writing rude words on crabs with a pen.

Melvyn Bragg, accompanied by a vintage mobile cinema, travels across the country to show incredible footage preserved by the British Film Institute and other national and regional film archives, to tell the history of modern Britain. Melvyn visits Sheringham in Norfolk, home of the North Norfolk Heritage Railway, to look back to the 1960s when the Beeching Axe led to the closure of 4,000 miles of track, over 2,000 stations and the loss of 67,000 railway jobs.

Murder On The Victorian Railway BBC2, 21.00 London 1864. On a Hackney-bound train, a guard discovers blood in a first class carriage - and a body on the railway embankment. For the first time, a murder has taken place on Britain’s railways. Over a hundred years later, this single documentary for BBC Two uses the first-hand testimony of the people involved at the time to explore this unique event and how it provoked a huge public outcry and debate. The story quickly became a news sensation as the dangers of the brave new world of the train were laid bare. The witnesses to the story may be long dead but their words survive in court transcripts, memoirs, letters and vivid journalism. These testimonies are now used to act out the story, taking the documentary deep into the 19th century to meet an extraordinary cross section of real-life Victorian London: from the engine driver who found the body to the detective in charge of the investigation. Who killed Mr Briggs?
Matt Allwright looks into the work of fraud investigators determined to catch those who steal from the public purse. When money is tight and you need to feed your children or pay your rent, the benefits system is there to help, as Maxine Green knew only too well. But when her name came up during an unrelated investigation, Havering Council soon discovered a 168,000-pound fraud behind this seemingly single mum. And Matt meets Chris Lewis, who found himself in dire straits after a business venture failed when he left the forces. With family life as he knew it threatened, could Chris find the help he so desperately needed to succeed in civvy street?

JAMIE DREW Tenerife's Entertainment Email: jamie.drew@canarianweekly.com
Patching into… The Patch! THIS week I’d like to touch on the subject of variety, a wonderful factor that should underpin any entertainment format.
However, variety doesn’t have to be in one venue because it could be spread over different places in one area. Certain bars prefer to find a niche and specialise in a particular field of entertainment.
This kind of variety is apparent in “The Patch”, in Las Americas. It’s not its official postal name but more a nickname given to the area, after The Patch Cafe at the top of the street, opposite Hotel Las Palmeras. Within metres of each other, most bars offer some form of entertainment, whether it be live musicians, cabaret shows or simply karaoke. Whatever tickles your fancy, you’ll find it around this area.
Shennanigans in Shennanigans! IT is a little gem of a pub, and I call Shennanigans a pub because that is what it looks like. So many venues are referred to as “bars”, but this is a PUB in every sense of the word, and it also offers a completely different style of entertainment from what’s going on but a few steps away. Residents Freddy Kay and Dave Dean, “The Loony Tunes”, have been around The Patch for around 20 years and are the most popular duo in town. Again the word “variety” crops up, and not only will you be belly-laughing at the comedy delivered by Freddie, but you will also be astounded by the musical brilliance of Dave, whose guitar skills will have your jaws dropping. The Loony Tunes also provide musical backing for the pub’s visiting cabaret artistes, the only venue in the area to do so. These two guys are passionate about keeping music live and, I have to admit, there is something special about watching an all-live show. The buzz is different,
too, when singers perform with live musicians, rather than using a backing track. There are lots of places on The Patch, where you will see the Island’s entertainers socialising, and this is one such place. Many come here just to get up and sing with the boys, while others go along to enjoy the variety. Last Wednesday, I bumped into comedy acts Anthony Scott and Kevin Issacs, whose lovely wife, Lyndsey, agreed with

JANUARY saw the refurbishment and extension of the existing Gaelic Corner just about completed, and I now refer to this as Tenerife’s first “Super Pub”. After acquiring the buildings which housed The Full Monty early in 2012, Felipe has extended the Gaelic Corner and built a staircase down to his other venue, The Dubliner. The whole project is not completely finished, but what’s left to do is purely cosmetic. This corner holds a lot of fond memories for me because I spent almost four years working in the former Full Monty Bar every night before it closed. But times change, and I have to admit that Felipe certainly has vision, and the place looks really good. Both venues offer live entertainment and, quite obviously, as the me that this area packs in some talent when it comes to live entertainment. The staff are also very friendly in Shennanigans. Manager Jo and the two girls, Amy and
The Dubliner & The Gaelic Corner names suggest, the theme of the music is Irish. I can just imagine the atmosphere in there for next month’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations . Not long to go, either (17th Mar). Upstairs, you will be entertained
by Andy and Vinny, two fabulous musicians with an abundance of songs to their repertoire. Coupled with the late-opening Dubliner Bar, together with their award-winning Dubliner Band, this Irish corner definitely
has a winning formula. If you have not been to The Patch for a while, it’s worth a visit, but make it over a weekend if possible because there is so much variety in this small entertainment centre.
Michelle, work as a team, and they’re obviously all good friends, which makes for a lot of fun at work. I just love the shennanigans in Shennanigans.
These are just two venues in The Patch area which demonstrate variety within the live music field. But there’s a whole lot more to do here, with karaoke bars like The Brewers Droop, offering cabaret shows as well as resident host Dave Michaels. Then there’s The Drunken Duck, with resident duo Too Risky performing every night, plus late-night karaoke with compere and Dj Mark. You won’t regret spending a few evenings of your holiday in this area. There is something for everyone.

Home and Lifestyle NEW research from Mintel finds budget Britain is in full swing with nine in ten (89%) Brits now on a budget. For many, budgeting has become a part of daily life and it seems Britain’s affluent are feeling the pinch too.
The research found that nearly half (44%) of all Brits are budgeting more than they were this time last year. Today, as many as nearly nine in ten (89%) Brits shop on a budget, and a further 9% don’t budget but are keeping a track of what they spend. Indeed, proving the impact of post recession Britain, just 2% of Brits admit to not having a budget or tracking their spend. Families are the group most likely to budget, with nearly half (48%) of parents reporting they had a stricter budget over the past year. Meanwhile, it seems Britain’s women are the savviest shoppers -
B&Q stakes out the hot trends for 2013 in interiors. Blue, bold, geometric shapes, iridescent and pearlescent finishes, stripes and vibrant cultural themes are topping the list for spring/summer 2013 interior design trends, says B&Q, the UK’s largest home improvement retailer, who have complied the up-and-coming home trends for this year. There’s nothing more heartening than the refuge of home, where we can take comfort from our surroundings and instantly relax. 2013 trends will reflect the growing popularity of experiencing and engaging in the home – it is about lifestyle, not just adding value, predicts the retailer. According to a recent European Home Report by Kingfisher, owner of B&Q, 64% of people plan to spend more on their home in the next 12 months. Refreshing home furnishings is the second biggest home improvement activity (26%) this year. Leisure and entertaining in the

nearly one in two (49%) reporting an increase in budgeting over the past year compared to less than four in ten (39%) men. Ina Mitskavets, Senior Consumer and Lifestyles Analyst at Mintel said: “The downturn over the last few years has changed spending and budgeting habits in the UK. We have gone from a nation of borrowers and over-spenders to a nation of savers and
savvy shoppers. The constant reminders of the dire state of the UK economy, together with what we have seen happen in Europe over the last few years, means that budgeting, saving and discounts have become words ingrained in the consumer psyche.” It’s not just the low paid, Mintel’s research also shows how consumers on high incomes (those earning £50,000 and above) are
likely to jump on the “budget bandwagon” - with some 90% of high earners claiming that they budget. Today’s high earners are particularly savvy with their shopping activities - leading the way in using discounts and special offers when shopping. Indeed, while 70% of all consumers use in store discounts such as buy-one-getone-free, this rises to 73% of high earners. Rewards and loyalty

home were identified as the two most important factors considered when selecting home décor. Crazy For Colour Blues (think ink, cobalt and indigo), emerald green, icecream pastels, yellows and oranges are the top choices from the colour wheel for 2013. What’s predicted as the colour of the year? Blue – the new IT shade for 2013. Specifically Indigo Blue. B&Q like the richness and elegance of this shade, and its sophisticated feel. And of course, we like it because, like Meryl Streep’s magazine editor said in The Devil Wears Prada, it’s not just blue. Yellow is the new pink! This colour will dominate with vibrancy making for lively and stimulating colour palettes, fabrics and fittings. Tangerine still tops. The colour of 2012, tangerine, will still be celebrated in 2013, but in a more red-ish hue.
This sizzling shade adds instant style to any colour-dehydrated room, creating a bold, modern and timeless impact. Fancy something a little more uplifting to dress your interiors? Then you may like to prettify your home in ice-cream colours, much like Prada’s SS12 collection. Enough with the plain – think pretty. Geometric Bold, geometric shapes pave the way for Spring/Summer 2013. Sharp modern geometric lines cover every surface, from wall to cushions, lighting to mirrors. Natural World Decor fluttering with birds, bees and butterflies and designs featuring leaf prints reflect our passion to bring the great outdoors into our rooms this year, as well as a desire to blur the boundary between home and garden. Mega Trend: Stripes Stripes were a huge catwalk trend during
Spring/Summer 2013 Fashion Weeks, and there will be no escaping stripes in home decor as well – designers like it because it brings movement to a room and creates visual illusions. Pattern & Texture For pattern, stop being so matchy-matchy, the trend will be to clash your fabrics and stimulate the senses. Have more fun with your palette by throwing together stripes, retro, hand sketches and geometrics in an array of colours and textures. Also, everything old is new again. Traditional patterns such as Ikat are coming back with a
cards are used by an average of 66% of Brits, again this rises to 75% of high earners. Finally, percentage off total purchase is used by an average of 52% of Brits compared to some 59% of high earners. “Even the more well-to-do shoppers show more reserve with their finances in uncertain economic times. Budgeting is becoming an ingrained habit, as people are reluctant to flash the cash and appear to be taking pride in being more financially conservative than in the past. Rising costs of childcare, coupled with austerity measures such as the slashing of child tax credits and the loss of child benefit for middle and high income earners, mean that the squeeze is only set to get tighter for families.” Ina said. In the current climate budget ranges of products have been the success story of the recession, some 30% of consumers buy budget ranges compared to just one in five (20%) back in 2008. In addition, only 14% of consumers claim that
they would hide the fact that they buy value products, indicating a shift in perception, whilst over half (53%) agree low price is more important than brand name and nearly seven in ten (68%) are proud to tell their friends about any good bargains they find. “No longer is budgeting something to be ashamed of; in fact, finding a bargain or getting a great deal is something to be celebrated, even shouted about.” She added. Coupons from the Internet (32%) and magazines (29%) are the next most popular ways for consumers to save money whilst shopping. Just under half (44%) of all discount users used them to buy clothing and accessories and 38% used special offers to eat out or to buy groceries in the past six months. “This shows that people are working to stretch their money not only to help make ends meet, but also to put a little pleasure into their lives.” Ina concluded.
present-day colour palette, adding a punch of excitement to classic and contemporary room settings. Ethnic Rich cultural influences from Morocco and Africa create a collection of strong colours and mismatched design. This look has evolved into a more relaxed Bohemian style with tie dye patterns in vibrant, uplifting shades of warm turquoise, hot red, and soft grey and fresh white highlights. Ethnic can transition into many decorating styles. It works with the industrial look, to create a rugged unfinished look, or with a more streamlined, contemporary approach, using wood, metal and distressed leather. When playing off a neutral dé-
cor this style gives you a great opportunity to splash colour into the room. Work the Walls Wallpaper has made a huge comeback over the last couple of years and the choice of designs is greater than ever, ranging from bright patterns, retrodesigns echoing the Fifties or those brilliantly mimicking effects such as stone, brick and wood. Let There Be Felt Lastly, never underestimate felt which will be a major force in 2013 because of versatility. Felt is a natural eco-fibre and it has wonderful drape-ability and translucency, which makes it great for lampshades. Melanie Griffin, Category Director for Home at B&Q says: “This season, refreshing your home doesn’t have to break the bank or become a chore. We have put the latest trends and an expansive assortment of highquality, affordable home decor at your fingertips, giving you the ability to transform the interior design of your home in one shopping trip.”

Winter salad By David Hudgell GROWING salad leaves all-year round is now becoming the trend, living here in Tenerife just makes it easier. For a continuous supply you need to a grow a few seeds of different types every couple of weeks. The secret to getting a good crop is drainage, seedlings don’t like to be soaking in water but equally they’ll die if left to dry out. Choose a sheltered,
SOME 7,000 plants from around the world have been named by Britain's leading gardening organisation, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), as the best performing for ordinary use. The revised list of plants, which will receive the charity’s coveted Award of Garden Merit (AGM), will be launched in London during the RHS Plant and Design Show on the 19th February. Ranging from herbs and house plants to trees and shrubs, the plants have been selected from the huge range available in the UK. The list is designed to help inform gardeners about those that will perform for them. The AGM plants have all been recognised for their ability to meet the following criteria: • Excellent for ordinary use in appropriate conditions • Of good constitution • Essentially stable in form and colour • Reasonably resistant to pests and diseases • Available to buy in the UK Potential AGM plants are nominated through two main routes – either by recommendations from RHS Plant Committees and specialists, or as a result of an RHS Plant Trial. All plants are subject to ratification by the relevant RHS Plant Committee, resulting in a robust se-
sunny position when deciding where to grow your salad as it’s important that the seedlings are protected from cold winter winds. Prepare a container/ pot mix of potting compost and John Innes and use a window box or pot. Sow seeds in short, shallow rows. Cover with soil, label and

Originally instituted in 1992, the list has been completely reviewed by RHS Plant Committees, whose members include nurserymen and leading horticulturists, with assistance from plant societies and plantgroup specialists. The review, which took place during 2012, was led by Dr John Grimshaw, Director of the Castle Howard Arboretum Trust. As part of the overhaul, all existing AGM plants were reconsidered to ensure that they still met the stringent AGM criteria. Those that fell short were removed from the list, while new awards were made after round-table assessment by relevant committees or during RHS trials. Nearly 1,900 plants have had their AGM rescinded, and more than 1,400 additional plants have secured the award. Rescindments

Plants new to the 2013 list include tender orchids, the first time since 2002 that plants in this group have received the AGM. The crab apple Malus ‘Comtessa de Paris’, which has good shape, is healthy and has prolific crops of persistent yellow fruits, also makes an appearance, replacing Malus x zumi ‘Golden Hornet’, which is subject to scab, has poor shape and fruits that quickly turn brown. Hybrid Lenten roses (Helleborus x hybridus), although praised by the RHS for general excellent qualities, did not make the list because they are mostly seed-raised, and are therefore subject to variability. The trialling of plant groups underrepresented on the revised list, and plant groups that have undergone extensive breeding programmes in recent years will be made a priority. These include: Agapanthus, Digitalis, Erica, Euphorbia, Hamamelis, Helleborus, Heuchera, Hippeastrum, Solenostemon and strawberries. On February 19 the RHS will also launch its new hardiness ratings. The ratings have been used to reassess all AGM plants by using data on the plant’s ability to tolerate a range of weather conditions. The new hardiness ratings rank from H1 for growing in a heated glasshouse to H7 for the very hardiest of plants, giving gardeners a more useful guide than the former H1–H4 system. RHS Director of Horticulture Jim Gardiner said: “The creation of the new hardiness ratings and the revised AGM list underline just why the RHS exists, to share the best in gardening.

did you know... The world’s oldest topiary garden is Levens Hall, Cumbria, UK, which has topiary designs that are over 300 years old, with the initial planting and training of them carried out in the 1690s. The shapes include Chess pieces, the Judge’s Wig and the Great Umbrellas. The topiary trimming takes many months, using lightweight aluminium scaffolding to reach the higher points. It is usually carried out from late August onwards, once a year. Parts of the Elizabethan Hall itself were built between 1250-1300 and has been influenced by the ideas of its different owners. Topiary comes from the word ‘topiarius’ which was the name given to the slaves of ancient Egypt and Rome who were given the job of shaping the bushes.

YOU’RE NOT GOING BALD! NO, MADAM...
By Carl from Robot
DURING the last few months, I have been getting a few questions in the salon regarding the subject of hair loss.
Not alopecia, thankfully, or anything that serious. It’s just that some of you are getting rather mixed up over natural hair shedding. Us humans lose between 75-100 hundred hairs a day, and that’s normally without you even noticing. This needs to happen to replenish your hair and to regenerate the follicle which goes through a dormant phase, then starts again. If you didn’t shed hair, you would eventually go bald. That’s because hair has a “life span” - a few months or years, depending on the person, and his or her health and lifestyle. That’s why I can state that in my 32 years’ experience, I rarely see women losing their hair to alopecia, but it causes so much panic when a woman thinks she is thinning on top. But 99% of the time, this thinning is down to two things: hair lacquer and, or, tying hair back constantly (my pet hate). Yes, over-use of hair lacquer, which sticks the hair to itself, will hold on to the hair that should fall away freely without you noticing. So, too, when tying
Page 40
hair back all day, it will keep the loose hairs wrapped inside your ponytail. Thus, when you come to wash your hair or brush it beforehand, it’s “Ahhhh, all my hair is falling out”!. I see it so many times, yet trying to calm a woman down and convince her that she’s not going to end up hairless like me is some tall task. Women tell me many times that the plughole is full of hair and ask if this is normal. The answer is Yes, and if you haven’t got circular bald patches on your head, then stop worrying because it’s totally normal. If your hair is replacing itself, then
it’s a good sign that all is well. But worrying about it will cause stress, which can lead to alopecia, and then you will be bald! Forget, too, the obsession that the Spanish here have special shampoos to stop hair from falling out. Believe me, your hair NEEDS to do this! It’s the same process as when your skin flakes off, causing dust around the house. That’s the skin losing the dead cells and replacing them with new ones. If anyone needs further reassurance, then you know where I am, and I’ll be glad to let you know that all is well.
Forget the fizz and stay fitter STARTLING new research has revealed that fizzy diet drinks can raise the risk of diabetes by as much as 60%.
More than 66,000 middle-aged Frenchwomen were quizzed in an extensive study, which revealed that those who drank artificially-sweetened drinks were more likely to develop the disease than those who indulged in regular, “full fat” versions. The findings, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, defy conventional thinking that regular fizzy drinks are always worse for our health. The effect is compounded because diet drinkers also consume more - on average 2.8 glasses a week compared with 1.6 for regular drinkers. Regular, full-fat fizzy drinks have previously been linked to an increased risk of diabetes. But less is known about their artificially sweetened counterparts, which are generally promoted as a healthier
substitute. The women were quizzed about their dietary habits, and their health was then monitored between 1993-2007. The researchers, from the National Institute of Health and Medical Research in France, examined the rates of diabetes among women who drank either regular or diet fizzy drinks, and those who drank unsweetened fruit juice only. Women who drank fizzy drinks had a higher risk of diabetes than those who consumed juice only. Those who took fizzy drinks had a higher risk of diabetes than those who consumed fruit juice. And those who drank up to 359ml of any type of fizzy a week - just more than a regularsized can - were onethird more likely to develop the disease. The risk was more than double in those who drank 600ml a week - just bigger than a regular bottle. Drinkers of diet drinks had an even higher risk of diabetes compared with those who drank
regular ones. Those who drank up to 500ml a week had a 15% increased risk. And once more than 1.5 litres a week were consumed, it became a 60% increased risk. The researchers concluded: “Contrary to conventional thinking, the risk of diabetes is higher with ‘light’ beverages compared with ‘regular’ sweetened The paper noted previous research, which showed that aspartame - the most widely-used sweetener - has a similar effect on blood glucose and insulin levels as the sucrose used in regular sweeteners. World Health Organisation statistics show that 347 million people worldwide have diabetes, a chronic disease which occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough glucosecontrolling insulin, or when the body cannot efficiently use it. Over time, the disease can damage the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves, which increases the risk of heart disease, kidney failure, stroke and blindness.

Dangers of a painkiller By Val Sainsbury DOCTORS in the UK are writing millions of prescriptions a year for a painkiller known to increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Diclofenac is given by GPs to ease the pain of arthritis, backache, gout and other common conditions. A review of existing research showed the drug was one of the riskiest of its type, raising the danger of fatal incidents even by up to 63%. This risk is almost identical to that of the painkiller Vioxx (rofecoxib), which was withdrawn from worldwide sales in 2004 because of cardiovascular concerns The study’s authors are calling for diclofenac to be banned or, at least, severely restricted. They also accused family doctors, who issued almost five million prescriptions for the drug in England in 2011, of being complacent
about the dangers, and of not warning patients of the risks. In a review of studies on painkillers known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), which also include ibuprofen, coauthor Patricia McGettigan, of Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry found diclofenac had the highest risk. Despite this, it was the most used, which meant it was prescribed more often than safer alternatives, such as the painkiller naproxen. Dr McGettigan said the dangers of diclofenac had been well-documented, so GPs were either not
keeping up with the latest research, or simply ignoring the warnings. She added: “This drug improves symptoms, but patients are not stuck for alternatives. There are strong arguments to revoke its marketing authorisations globally.” However, the doctor did say that a healthy young person’s odds of having a heart attack or stroke was so low that taking diclofenac would add little to their risk. Yet the effect could be significant in elderly people with underlying health problems. Diclofenac is also available over-the-counter in a lower dose Voltarol tablets and cream. The gel is
not thought to have any cardiac side-effects, but the pills may, if taken in large numbers, said Dr McGettigan, who makes her argument in the PLoS Medicine journal Dr McGettigan urged patients not to panic and stressed that no one should come off the tablets without first speaking to his or GP. Maureen Talbot, of the British Heart Foundation, said that anyone taking diclofenac and other NSAIDs should be made aware of the risks, as well as the benefits. The Arthritis Research UK charity said there were few other effective options for those with
painful, long-term conditions such as arthritis. It recommends that people take the lowest dose of the most appropriate of the painkillers for the shortest time. A spokesman added that painkilling gels and creams are a safer alternative to pills. Britain’s drugs watchdog, the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory products Agency, said a European review of the safety of diclofenac was already underway. A spokesman added: “Diclofenac is an extremely important NSAID, used for the treatment of arthritis and other painful con-
ditions. “For most patients, the risks of sideeffects are outweighed by the benefits these drugs bring in managing pain. “But if people have any concerns about any NSAID they are taking, they should speak to their doctor.” Novartis, which makes the low-dose form of Voltarol, said patient safety is its top priority and it fully supports the European review of diclofenac’s safety. A spokesman added that the company was confident that the information available to date shows the benefits outweigh the risks.
It’s enough to make you quit! LUNG cancer will shortly climb ahead of breast cancer as the biggest cause of female cancer death in Europe. This is already the case in the UK and Poland, and the rise reflects a surge in the number of women who began puffing away in the 1960s and 1970s, say experts. The death rate from this disease will carry on its upward trend for the next few years. But with fewer young European women now starting to smoke, it should decrease with time. In 2013, some 82,640 European women will die from lung cancer, against 88,886 dying from breast cancer. And within two years, lung cancer will take the lead, according to Professor Carlo La Vecchia and colleagues. They looked at cancer rates for the EU as a whole (27 member states as at 2007) and also in
France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the UK for all cancers - and, individually, for stomach, intestine, pancreas, lung, prostate, breast, uterus (including cervix) and leukaemias. Figures show that although more and more people are developing cancer - because they are living longer - overall, fewer are dying from the disease. Despite the decline in total cancer deaths, those for lung cancer continue to rise
15th February - 21st February 2013
among EU women. The number of pancreatic cancer deaths among both men and women also shows no sign of falling, largely because there are few effective treatments for this type of cancer. Prof La Vecchia, of the University of Milan, Italy, said: “This is worrying. It is the single, major cancer that does not show any signs of declining in the future, despite fewer people smoking. “Smoking and diabetes
account for about a third of cases. But we do not know what causes most of the rest. “But for lung cancer, we expect death rates to start to go down in around 2020 or 2025, now that the new generation of women are smoking less.” Sarah Williams, of Cancer Research UK, said: “It’s encouraging to see that, overall, the rate of people dying from cancer in Europe is predicted to continue falling.

1 sprig of thyme salt and freshly ground black pepper 100ml/3½fl oz milk 100ml/3½fl oz double cream 2 tbsp fresh chives, chopped Preparation method Trim and slice the leeks in thin rounds. Rinse in a colander under cold water. Peel the potatoes and cut into chunks. Melt the butter in a
pan and gently sauté the onion and garlic. Add the leek, potatoes, bay leaf and thyme. Season. Cover with the water and bring to the boil. Simmer for 12 minutes until the potatoes and leeks are tender. Remove the bay leaf. Just before serving add the milk and cream and stir over a low heat, check the seasoning. Serve in bowls and
sprinkle with the chives. Main Cauliflower cheese with bacon and mushrooms Parmesan crumbs provide a fantastic crunchy topping in this recipe, which is hearty enough to work as a main course Ingredients For the cauliflower 1 head cauliflower, trimmed and broken into florets For the béchamel sauce 250g/9oz smoked streaky bacon, cut into 1cm/½in strips 250g/9oz chestnut mushrooms, finely sliced 25g/1oz butter 50g/2oz plain flour 250ml/9fl oz full-fat milk pinch English mustard powder 200g/7oz gruyère cheese, grated 55ml/2fl oz double cream salt and freshly ground black pepper pinch ground nutmeg For the topping 50g/2oz ciabatta breadcrumbs 50g/2oz parmesan cheese, finely grated To serve green salad crusty bread Preparation method For the cauliflower, cook the florets in a large pan of boiling water for about 10 minutes, or until just tender. Drain and set aside.
Meanwhile for the béchamel sauce, fry the bacon strips in a dry frying pan until coloured but not crisp. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside, keeping the bacon fat in the pan. Add the mushrooms to the pan of bacon fat and fry for 2-3 minutes, or until golden-brown. Remove from the pan and set aside. Melt the butter in a clean saucepan and beat in the flour until smooth. Slowly whisk in the milk until smooth, then stir in the mustard powder, grated cheese and double cream. Keep stirring until the cheese has melted and the mixture is thick and creamy. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper, then fold in the bacon and mushrooms. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Place the cauliflower florets into an ovenproof casserole dish and pour over the cheesy sauce. Sprinkle over a pinch of freshly grounded nutmeg. For the topping, mix the ciabatta breadcrumbs with the parmesan cheese, then sprinkle the mixture over the cauliflower. Place into the oven for 15 minutes, or until the topping is golden-
brown and bubbling. Spoon the cauliflower cheese onto plates and serve with a crisp green salad and crusty bread. Dessert Rhubarb crumble James Martin’s classic rhubarb crumble recipe will take you to comfort food heaven in six short steps and under an hour. Ingredients 10 sticks of rhubarb 4 tbsp water 8 tbsp caster sugar 1 tsp powdered ginger 110g/4oz butter, softened 110g/4oz demerara sugar 180-200g/6-7oz flour To serve double cream Preparation method Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Cut the rhubarb into 7½cm/3in long sticks and place on an oven tray, sprinkle with the water and caster sugar and roast in the oven for 10 minutes. Once cooked, remove from the oven, sprinkle over the ginger and mix well. Fill an ovenproof dish about 4cm/1½in deep with the rhubarb. Rub the butter into the flour and sugar to make the crumble topping. Sprinkle over the rhubarb and bake in the oven for 35-45 minutes, or until the crumble topping is crisp and golden-brown and the rhubarb filling has softened and is bubbling. Remove and allow to cool slightly before serving with double cream. Source www.bbc.co.uk/ food

www.canarianweekly.com WHAT springs to mind when you think of Sundays? A long lie-in, the Sunday papers or a meal out with family?
If the latter is your idea of a perfect end to the weekend, then I have found the ultimate place for you. Kikiriki, in the Apolo Centre near the big roundabout is Los Cristianos, has long been regarded as a special venue for great food. And now you can eat there on a Sunday afternoon. What’s so new about that? I hear you ask. Well nothing for opening on a Sunday, but when I add that you will receive a 40% discount - no your eyes aren’t deceiving you, 40% - then it becomes even more appealing The menu in this restaurant is spectacular: a true mix of meats, seafood and beautiful vegetarian options. And with fabulous service and relaxing surroundings, it truly is what Sundays are all about. I was dining with three other people on this occasion, as I have eaten here on many others, which gave me a chance to taste some of the alternative dishes on offer. So on we go. We ordered four different starters: Catalan bread, a mix of Mediterranean flavours, malty bread, topped with fresh tomatoes and garlic, all smothered in virgin olive oil; Chopitos, deep-fried baby squid in a fresh, crispy batter; onion cake, a moist, savoury cake infused with salmon; and, also

The thing is, the chicken is so nice that it’s really hard to go past it on the menu, so that’s why I was pleased I wasn’t alone, as one of my fellow kikirikiers plumped for a beautiful fillet of sole. This was again perfectly cooked, and it just fell apart into satisfying, meaty flakes, and with side-orders
new for Sundays, special paella, a dish so packed with meat and seafood that it was hard to see the rice. All of these starters, as with all of the food here, is ultra fresh and so very, very tasty. The main courses again didn’t disappoint

and, as always, I had to have the special Kikiriki chicken. This is their signature dish - a half chicken, or quarter if you’re not too hungry, perfectly roasted with rosemary, moist meat and crispy skin. It’s perfect for me, by the way, and this was
of garlic potatoes and moreish spinach to accompany all the meals, I was beginning to reach full. Thank heavens for the dessert stomach. Now, I know I go on about desserts and it’s because, well, I love ’em. But I can honestly say I would travel miles for the Lemon Meringue pie in this place. It’s simply stunning, and it’s so lemony that it gives you the look on your face of an old dear in a workingmen’s club when somebody talks during the bingo, and with sugary-sweet meringue and gorgeous pastry … oh I’m drooling now. So to recap: all the food we had on this glorious Sunday afternoon was nothing short of incredible, the service again spot-on - then we were given the bill and couldn’t believe the vast amount of money saved with the huge discount we received. Thanks to everyone, and see you next week
exactly what I got. It is served with four extremely individual sauces - pepper, blue cheese, Kikiriki special sauce and my favourite, the vicious spicy - all bursting with flavour and all complement the succulent meat of the poultry so well.

Heathrow wants passengers to cough up for renovations HEATHROW Airport officials have this week announced a £3bn investment plan, - and they expect travellers to help fund it.
Stylish cabin crew are tops in Europe AEROFLOT is flying high in the style stakes after being voted ‘Europe’s most stylish airline’ by Skyscanner users. The Russian operator came out on top in a poll of over 1,200 air travellers, who rated each airline’s uniform on a scale of one to five. When it comes to looking good at 35,000 feet, Aeroflot cabin crew strut their stuff all the way to the top of the rankings. Perhaps it’s those red uniforms that earned them poll position? Or maybe voters had seen recent publicity surrounding the latest edition of Aeroflot’s cabin crew calendar, so racy it would make Ryanair’s calendar girls blush. While the Russians may have put their best fashion foot forward, British Airways, flying the flag in red white and blue, came in a close second overall. In fact, one British budget airline also fared remarkably well, with Flybe just failing to make the top

five but still taking a fashion-forward sixth place. Perhaps Kelly Brook’s recent promotional campaign for Flybe’s new inflight entertainment programme helped boost the airline’s style rating? German airline Lufthansa, with its blue suits and yellow scarves, pipped the traditionally chic French into third place, while Finnish airline Finnair has the finesse to finish as the fifth most stylish European airline. Skyscanner’s Russia Manager, Tatiana Danilova, commented: “Russian cabin crew are well-known for being very glamorous, and it is a well-respected and much sought after profession. It’s reassuring to see that after failing to be recognised for our general fashion sense, our Russian cabin crew are flying the flag and showing that Russians are extremely style savvy!” Most stylish airlines: 1. Airport chiefs wants to open their new Terminal 2 next year, as well as provide improved check-in and baggage facilities, and more customer-service training for staff. They also want regulators to approve a five-year plan to include increased fees from 2014 to 2019 for airlines to use the airport The charges per passenger, if approved, would increase from the 2012/13 figure of £19.33 to as much as £27.30 in 2018/19. Heathrow accounts for 78% of all long-haul flights from the UK. The charges, which must be sanctioned by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), would help pay for the investment. Heathrow chief executive Colin Matthews said: “Heathrow is the UK’s only hub airport and a strategically-important, national infrastructure asset. “Heathrow faces stiff
competition from other European hubs, and we must continue to improve the service we offer passengers and airlines. “We have invested billions of pounds in new facilities, such as Terminal 5, in recent years, and passengers say they have noticed the difference. “Our plan for a further £3bn of private-sector investment will further improve the airport for passengers. “The plan represents good value for money for airlines and passengers, and it comes at no cost to taxpayers.” Mr Matthews added that the airport envisaged passenger numbers increasing from just under the current 70 million to around 72.6 million by 2018/19.
Asked about the possibility of a third runway, he said that in terms of political decisions and planning, there was unlikely to be “any shovel going into the ground realistically for the 2014-2019 period we are talking about”. He said that the proportion of Heathrow passengers rating their journey as very good or excellent had increased from 48% in 2007 to 72% today. While airlines have supported plans for better customerservice, they have concerns about the rise in charges. British Airways said: “Heathrow Airport’s charges have already tripled over the past 11 years. “The charges must be reduced significantly
over the coming years, especially when the airport is cutting investment by around 25% from next year onwards. “We hope the regulator (the CAA) will give a fair ruling in the months ahead, which doesn’t penalise customers and airlines.” Virgin Atlantic chief operating officer Steve Griffiths said: “We are totally committed to improving the passenger- experience at Heathrow. “However, we believe this can be done without a repeat of the incredibly-steep price rises we have seen in airport charges in the last few years. “Prices at Heathrow are triple the level they were 10 years ago. Clearly, this is a concern for all passengers travelling through Heathrow, and all airlines operating there.” Heathrow’s flight punctuality the number of planes taking off or landing within 15 minutes of schedule was 67% in 2007. It has now gone up to 80%, and the airport wants this figure to increase by another 10% by the end of the decade.
Uninsured travellers on the rise MILLIONS of travelers are putting themselves at risk of massive medical bills, with nearly one in four (24%) of travellers holidaying abroad without travel insurance, representing a notable increase from one in five (20%) in 2011. The number of people taking out annual cover – which is recommended by ABTA as the most cost-effective insurance for people taking more than one trip per year – has also gone down significantly, from 30% in 2011 to 23% in 2012. The groups most likely to travel uninsured are males and younger travellers. Men are 8% less likely than females to take out insurance and nearly half (48%) of 15-24 year olds travel abroad uninsured. Londoners and those
in the East of England and Northern Ireland are also less likely than average to purchase a policy. The number of travellers who think insurance is too expensive has increased sharply over the past year. Nearly a third (31%) of consumers cited this as a reason for not taking out insurance, compared to one in five (20%) in 2011. Many travellers also appear to be unsure what travel insurance is for. 16% of consumers mistakenly believe that travel insurance is unnecessary as the UK government will pay for their treatment if they become ill abroad. 17% of travellers also wrongly assume that when travelling in Europe, they don’t need insurance because
they have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), but this only provides access to basic state medical care and will never cover the costs of repatriation to the UK, whether by regular flight or air ambulance. Alarmingly, a third (33%) of 15-24 year olds think this is the case. Even holidaymakers who do take out insurance may not be fully protected; one in ten travellers is guilty of ‘buying blind’ and not making sure they know what they are covered for. This is particularly true of those enjoying winter sports, as a third (30%) of skiers and snowboarders do not take out the necessary specific cover. Closer to home, two thirds (65%) of those holidaying in Britain
travel uninsured, with seven in ten (70%) believing that travel insurance is more important for holidays abroad. John de Vial, Head of Financial Protection, ABTA said: “The increase in the number of people travelling uninsured is alarming. In these tough economic times holidaymakers may feel pressure to cut costs but travel insurance is an essential. Now is a popular time to book a holiday and we strongly advise people to buy travel insurance at the same time. We hear too many horror stories of people who have forked out huge sums of money or not got the right treatment because they’ve had an accident abroad and been uninsured.”

Top Civic still lingers By Jav HONDA’S new 1.6-litre diesel model, which is available now, is the very best Civic you can buy. It renders the 2.2-litre i-DTEC all but superfluous, thanks to its punchy power delivery and excellent fuel economy. Yet while it’s more powerful and more efficient than the new Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI, that machine still sets benchmark in the family hatchback class when it comes to quality and refinement. Honda have finally decided to include a more economical version of the Civic diesel to their line-up, and it doesn’t fare too badly against comparable rivals. This 1.6-litre i-DTEC model is designed to tempt buyers away from the VW Golf 1.6 TDI and Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi, and it looks like a strong challenger. It’s taken Honda a long time to launch a diesel smaller than 2.2 litres, but the new engine’s figures suggest it’s been
worth the wait. The CO2 emissions are 94g/ km, and it also promises 78.5mpg fuel economy, while producing a useful 118bhp and 300Nm of torque. In comparison, the most efficient 1.6 TDI version of the new Golf will return 74.3mpg and emits 99g/km of CO2, while making do with just over 100bhp and 250Nm of torque. This power advantage is clear on the road, as the Civic proves it is a stronger performer throughout the rev range.
In fact, it’s so impressive that buyers will probably think twice about going for the 2.2-litre as the 1.6 is a lot quieter than the larger engine. But it’s still nowhere near as refined as the Golf’s 1.6-litre. To accommodate the lighter diesel, which is built in Swindon, Honda’s engineers have tweaked the Civic’s suspension and steering settings, so this is now the sweetest model to drive. Until Honda release their forthcoming dual-clutch, automatic
transmission, however, the only gearbox available is a six-speed manual. It’s 7kg lighter than the one used with the 2.2-litre engine and has reduced internal friction, which also helps the Civic to be more efficient. Prices range from £19,400 for the basic SE model to £23,175 for the top-spec EX, which will have all the extras one could possible need. But even the entrylevel SE version gets alloy wheels, climate control, electric windows
and mirrors, plus LED daytime running lights. There’s also enough safety kit to ensure a five-star Euro NCAP crash safety-rating for
the Civic. The problem is that even the entrylevel version of the fivedoor Golf 1.6 TDI is a lot more desirable, and it costs just £165 extra! The Civic is considerably more spacious than the Volkswagen, however, and especially its rear seats and boot, which can accommodate up to 477 litres of luggage. And the Honda also features unique and practical “Magic Seats”, which flip up out of the way to enable you to carry large objects in place of rear passengers. But these small touches, though interesting and special, may not be enough to tempt the majority of buyers away from the benchmark VW, particularly as Volkswagen are planning to launch an even more efficient BlueMotion diesel version of the new Golf later this year.

Picasso’s family work of art CITROËN’S Picasso C3 sells so well for two main reasons: it’s the largest car in its class and because it’s also among the cheapest. You’d pay a £1,000 more for an equivalent Ford B-Max, and three grand more for a like-for-like Vauxhall Meriva. And that’s at list price, before Citroën’s generous discounts are measured against those of its rivals. Since neither the new Ford nor the Vauxhall have threatened either of the C3’s outstanding selling points - more than 1,500 litres of maximum boot space - there’s been little pressure on Citroën to update the model, which is ideal for families.. That means there has just been the odd tweak here and there with the
new version, like a new front bumper replacing the old, less-simple one. Also, LED daytime running lights and fog lamps with a cornering function have been
15th February - 21st February 2013
added to mid and highspec models. In addition, there are a couple of new paint colours and seat upholsteries, plus a couple equipment-
level alterations. Mechanically, Citroën have found an extra five horsepower for the range-topping 1.6- litre HDi diesel – and that’s the best of the C3 bunch.
In contrast to the lowlier diesel, the new 113bhp motor provides plenty of flexible urge, and the extra intermediate gear ratio means you’re seldom far from that
199lb ft wave of thrust. However, the French car-makers have missed a chance to smarten up the car’s fascia, which is a shame. You quickly get used to the central instruments, but the dated-looking climate control and audio consoles need a complete redesign. The mix of plastics is hardly impressive, either: hard and smooth to the touch here, soft and grained there, mostly flimsy and lacking in the consistency which spells true care and attention to detail. With the likes of the Ford B-Max around, the C3 is definitely lacking that touch of class. But as a cheap and cheerful family carry-all, it has a lot of pluses for mum, dad and the kids.

CD Tenerife 2 CD Leganes 1 Sporting B 3 CD Marino 1 THIS may be the win that sees Tenerife topping the section. Last Sunday, they ground out a win against opponents I’m convinced will be their nearest challengers. And in doing so, they may just have set the mindset for the last third of the season. Tenerife are now seven points clear of secondplace Real Oviedo, eight of Leganes, and it will take a massive upset in form for Tenerife to throw this away now. The cushion is perfect, and all the top sides have now visited Santa Cruz and returned to the mainland winless. Yes, there are some tricky matches still to come but, deep down, the chasing pack will know they are really aiming for second place. After a forgettable first half, the match sprung Segunda B

into life 10 minutes after the restart. Clown referee Juan Amaya saw Leganes centre-back Victor give Aridane the smallest of tugs and pointed to the spot. To add insult to injury, he showed the luckless defender another yellow card and he was on his way to the shower. It was very, very harsh. Aridane looked almost embarrassed as he walked up to take the penalty, but it was poorly struck and Falcon made a comfortable save. Despite this, Tenerife had the man advantage and would surely take game by the scruff of the neck. But Leganes showed why they had been on such an amazing run as they took the game to Tenerife. They matched the hosts for the next 10 minutes and then, stunningly, took the lead. Tarantino had the ball on the edge of his own box and took an age to weigh up his options. As he dawdled, Dioni snapped at his heels, Tarantino tried a Messi “still” turn and succeeded only in tripping himself up. Dioni pounced on the

free ball and sweetly stroked it past the stranded Aragoneses. It was a defensive howler of the highest order. Leganes had been given what they came for, and dropped everyone behind the ball. Tenerife spent a few frustrating minutes trying to pick a path through the visitors

as the crowd began to grow impatient. With manager Alvaro Cervero warming up super-sub striker Guillem Marti, Tenerife pulled their finger out with a stunning goal. Moyano stole the ball on the edge of his own area and bounded down the right flank. He noted Cristo Martin’s run and, with an inch-perfect pass, he found his man. Cristo took it down beautifully, shimmed the ball on to his favoured left foot and then curled it past Falcon and into the top corner of the goal. It was a beauty, and Cristo milked the moment as he stood, Cantona-style, and bathed in the applause for what was the best goal at the Heliodoro all season. Marti came on for Tarantino as Tenerife went with just the three at the back and three in attack. Leganes were swamped and the nine outfield players worked their socks off as they tried to put out the Tenerife fire. Try as they may, there were just too many white shirts, and it was no surprise when Aridane turned in Marti’s
cross after he had made fools out of Gomez and Mora. Late on, Marti squandered a one-on-one with Falcon when he should have put the game to bed. But that would have been cruel on Leganes, who showed that they, like Tenerife, deserve to be playing at a higher level. Canarian Weekly ratings CD Tenerife: Aragoneses 7, Moyano 7, Bruno 7, Tarantino 5 (Guillem Marti 70min 7), Llorente 6, Ros 9, Ochoa 6 (Medina 79min), Suso 6, Cristo Martin 8, Chechu 5 (Nico 26min 5), Aridane 6. Back on the mainland, it was defeat No 18 of the season for CD Marino. Sporting B were the latest side to send the Las Americas men packing, despite another gutsy showing. The simple truth is that the quality is not
there, but they have bags of heart, which they will need this Sunday. Plenty of CD Tenerife fans will be cheering them on when they host Real Oviedo. It would have been unthinkable 10 years ago for a side like Oviedo to be playing a league match in LA, so I hope the Marino fans enjoy it. And who knows what will happen? When these sides met in September, Marino produced their best away 90 minutes as they hung on for a point. The same on Sunday (kick off 11am) would be a fantastic achievement - and also be a massive boost for Tenerife, who travel to struggling Zamora. It’s hard to believe that they have lost the same number of games as Oviedo but are 15 places and 18 points worse off. They claim to have had no luck all season, and let’s hope that continues this weekend. Only Salamanca have won at Zamora since the first home match of the season, and Tenerife will have to be patient against a side who have only lost just one of their last five games.

Xtreme and Palms at the double! By Geoff Huxtable WITH two matches to spare, Xtreme Sports Bar are Premier League champions following a 5-3 win over Target Army - their third consecutive success. And Palms Sports Bar A claimed the Division 1 title after beating the Bytes 7-1 and Ourplace Naturals losing at Cozy
Warriors. Palms can now go on to set a remarkable record of winning every single match, although the Naturals might have a say in that in a couple of weeks. The Warriors’ victory means that Marilyns are relegated and Naughty Nautas are hanging by a thread, even after a draw with Bar 180 B. Summerlands’ Alan hit a maximum in a home defeat against Sundowners 1, while Rood are still in the race

Amistad 1, via the last rubber, to steal three valuable points, while Emerald Lounge could only draw at La Caña. Victories in their last two matches will give Bar 180 C the title. The second of those, however, is against Emerald Lounge! Chipeque Pool Bar are

THE Oasis Fm Pool League goes in search of international glory this weekend when they host the fifth annual challenge against the Scotland select team. Every year, the event gets bigger and better - and the hosts are confident of winning the trophy. Last year’s tournament couldn’t have been closer. The first night was a 25-25 draw and, incredibly, the same happened the following night as Tenerife roared back for a 26-26 draw. The deciding contest was tight, but the Scots got over the line 27-23 to seal another win. Tenerife have their biggest squad yet for this challenge, and con-
fident league chairman Roscoe said: “We know what to expect, and the lads will be fully focused. “The Jocks will be their usual confident selves, but we have a few surprises and new players lined up. This is not Braveheart!” The event is always played in a fantastic spirit and Scotland captain George Fagan told Canarian Weekly how much the lads enjoy the competition, saying: “This is the highlight of the year
for us. “It’s great to be able to come to Tenerife. The hospitality and rivalry are amazing, and we have all made friends over the years. It’s a fantastic event, and we will be flying home with the cup again.” This year’s event sees a two-day format. The Palms in Torviscas is hosting the show, and there will be three tables used. The matches are both best of 75 frames. It all gets underway tomorrow (Saturday) with a 7pm start, before horns are locked again on Sunday afternoon, kick-off 2pm. Everyone is welcome, so come along and cheer the Oasis Fm Pool League on to victory!
