and, if he does so, there would be a re-trial in Las Palmas. However, because of his current state of mind, this is highly unlikely.

Deranged Deyanov gets 20yrs for murder Continued from front. case will be reviewed.

Ms Mills-Westley’s family were not in Tenerife for the final sentence proceedings, having already returned to the UK. The 60-year-old mother of two had retired to the south of Tenerife, and was out shopping in the normally-safe resort of Los Cristianos on th Friday 13 May when she was the victim of a frenzied knife attack by homeless Bulgarian Deyanov in a local Chinese shop.

In the Palacio de Justicia court in Santa Cruz, he denied murder, with his defence lawyer, Francisco Beltran Aroca, arguing that he was not criminally responsible for his actions as he suffers from acute paranoid schizophrenia. But the nine-person jury found him guilty of murder, because he had taken his victim by surprise and she could not defend herself.

The murder trial began on Monday, 18th February, and lasted just five days before the verdict was known, but sentencing took a little longer.

The Mills-Westley family attended the trial and, on the final day, issued a statement criticising the authorities in both Spain and the UK over a catalogue of errors in dealing with the mental health of Deyanov.

“It is clear to us that there has been a catalogue of failings; unfortunately, it is now left to us to piece these together as we still have so many unanswered questions.”

He had previously been detained in hospitals in north Wales, where he has an aunty living in Flint, and was again let down by the system in Tenerife.

The statement continued: “We would like to make a plea that the care of people like Deyan Valentinov Deyanov is taken more seriously. He is a young

man who has clearly been failed by a number of authorities, in the UK, Spain and most likely others.”

In court, he admitted to taking crack and LSD and had no recollection of the events.

On the morning of the murder, Deyanov had walked into another supermarket on the seafront and asked for a knife, saying he was going to kill someone.

The jury found that he’ is a mentally-ill man and that, due to his chronic paranoid schizophrenia, he was not criminally responsible for his actions; thus, he is being sent to a psychiatric unit as opposed to prison.

When Ms MillsWestley’s daughter gave evidence in court, she was asked by the judge if she wanted compensation for the loss of her mother, to which she answered, “Yes”.

has been confirmed at 100,000 euros, but who pays this? A source told Canarian Weekly that the family expect to receive nothing, as Deyanov has no assets.

In addition, defence lawyer Aroca confirmed

exclusively to Canarian Weekly: “Deyanov has no money, so there will be no compensation.”

Missing Abroad and the National Homicide Service are covering the family’s travel and accommodation

costs. This is as a result of a working partnership, funded by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

The Spanish court will refund costs incurred by the witnesses and cover the costs of the trial as

a whole. Many feel that Deyanov’s sentence is not sufficient for the heinous crime he committed.

During the trial, the jury were shown graphic footage of the events, and witnesses testified as to how he carried the head into the street - it wasn’t a simple act.

However, he was tried under Spanish law, which states that the maximum sentence for murder is 20 years. Additional years are added only if more than one of three actions that define murder are carried out - premeditation, murder for money and prolonging suffering.

Under English law, since the abolition of capital punishment, murder carries a mandatory life sentence, with a minimum term.

As to his outlook, who knows? Most probably Deyanov (“The Angel of Jesus Christ”), who the Spanish refer to as “The Decapitator”, will be put on to a rehabilitation programme and the Mills-Westley family are left to pick up the pieces of their lives.

As they stated at the end of the trial: “Whilst today closes one chapter, we will have to live with the painful consequences for the rest of our lives.”

CW News In Brief Adeje’s two super centres TWO huge commercial centres have been given the green light to be built in Adeje, despite opposition for the second one from Tenerife’s Federation of Commerce.

Work has already begun on preparing the site for the first centre, to be spread over 25,000 square metres, opposite Siam Park.

The other one, which will be erected in stages in the grounds of the former Tropicana nightclub, will eventually sprawl over an enormous 365,640 square metres.

Spain’s Eurovision entry A BAND fronted by Formula One ace Fernando Alonso’s ex-girlfriend, will perform Spain’s Eurovision entry this year in Malmö, Sweden.

El Sueño de Morfeo have appeared regularly in Spain’s top-10 best-selling records for nearly a decade and have several top albums under their belt.

Lead singer Raquel del Rosario, 30, originally from the Canary Islands, was once linked romantically with former world champion Fernando Alonso.

Luxurious liner is fit for royalty THE most luxurious cruise ship ever built docked in Santa Cruz on Wednesday.

It is called The World, and it really is a world away from what most people would ever consider for a holiday because the cost is exorbitant.

Although it is huge, the ship holds just 300 passengers and 150 crew members. And unlike regular cruise ships, you can’t simply buy a ticket and hop on for a cruise

around the Med, say.

So chilly on the mainland POLAR winds mean snow may even reach the east coast of Spain, according to the State meteorological agency AEMET. Several provinces in northern and central Spain have been issued weather warnings, and drivers are being advised not to leave home.

Snow in Mediterranean provinces is extremely rare, except a long way inland. But although the temperature normally hits double figures, even at night in these areas by this time of year, daytime readings will not climb above 10ºC in the next few days, and minimum temperatures will be as little as 2ºC.

No more fiesta fireworks PYROTECHNICS of any type will be banned from future Carnivals following the tragic accident to Saido Prieto.

The Carnival Queen contestant received serious burns while awaiting her turn on stage when a rival’s costume, fitted with a pyrotechnic device, was ignited accidentally, engulfing Saido’s dress with flames.

She was rushed to hospital and later transferred to a specialist burns unit in Seville, where she is still receiving treatment.

LAST Saturday Adeje hosted the first edition of the “Adventure Race” organised by the Department of Sports.

Adeje Councillor, Adolfo Alonso Ferrera,

underlined that “this first edition has been a very successful organisation that has enabled us to provide an alternative adventure sport.

Participants thanked us at the end of the day for the quality of the event and insisted that we repeat it. We approached this

activity as a test to see if it worked and if it was accepted and, given the results, you can be sure that we will organize it again. “ The 11 participating teams enjoyed a different day, scouring the terrain in search of beacons, being tested in different places of the

municipality with skills such as archery, stand up paddle, cutting logs, agility, biking and walking among others.

The organisers wish to thank all of those who contributed in some way to make this event come true and invited everyone to participate next year.

Five arrested over those deadly fires last summer FIVE people, accused of causing the fires which devastated Tenerife last summer, are facing severe penalties if found guilty.

Even as the blazes raged through villages and farmland, mainly in the north of the Island and threatening tourist areas, the authorities pledged to track down the culprits and

bring them to justice.

One of the accused is said to have flicked a lighted cigarette out of a convertible car near an abandoned orchard.

That sparked a blaze which led to several fires ripping through an area of 6,512 hectares (over 2,600 acres), covering Guia de Isora, Vilaflor,

Adeje and La Oratova.

They decimated the environment, along with farmland and private properties.

Fire-fighters worked flat-out for weeks to get the various fires under control and eventually quell the danger, despite a lack of water at times because of the drought Tenerife was experiencing, and a

lack of access at times to the trouble spots.

Even the Spanish air force was called in with its specialist planes to back up the helicopters dumping thousands upon thousands of gallons of water on the fires daily.

Another blaze, which caused anxiety for several days in the El Tanque, Santiago and

Los Silos areas, has been blamed on two people, who have been charged with arson.

An incendiary device discovered in Icod de Los Vinos is said to have been traced back to a resident after DNA testing, and that person is also facing charges of starting three fires.

A fifth person has

been charged with four counts of arson in the Tacoronte area.

Such is the Government’s determination to stamp out arsonists that it has bought in legislation to allow prison terms of up to five years - but too late to penalise anyone found guilty of causing last summer’s nightmare blazes.

New Chimp family for Loro

A GROUP of 7 chimps, one adult male, three females and three youngsters, now have a new home at Loro Parque after a rescue mission by the authorities.

The new residents have been placed at Loro Parque by CITES, an International organisation looking after the welfare of endangered species.

The new family are settling in very

well.

During their transfer they were closely monitored by an experienced team of keepers and vets, which took care of the mammals extensively.

Loro Parque would not disclose from where the gorgeous creatures had been rescued from.

Immediately they began to discover their environment and interact normally. As soon as possible, they will begin the integration process with the rest of the chimpanzees already homed in Loro Parque since the 1980s, when they were seized from

the streets of Puerto de la Cruz. To guarantee the quality of animal welfare, Loro Parque has made several changes in its facilities by adding new termite mounds, waterfalls and trunks.

Over the years Loro Parque has rescued a number of different animals including one shark, which was found in a London airport, in the suitcase of a passenger, a large group of gorilla males, for which Loro Parque recreated the necessary social structure in order to solve the problem of a surplus of gorilla males in

European zoos. In 2008, Loro Parque recovered the seal Humphrey, who was found on the coast of Casablanca (Morocco) and after being recovered, was released in the waters of northern Spain. These are just some examples, along with different parrots, penguins, turtles and recently the orca Morgan, rescued almost dying at the coast of Holland, of animals that different authorities have decided to transfer to Loro Parque to ensure the best welfare for the animals concerned.

Bankia losses add to Spanish woes

SPAIN suffered a double blow this week when it was revealed the recession had deepened, and bailedout lender Bankia had posted record losses for a Spanish company.

Bankia’s deficit, a breath-taking19.2 billion euros (£16.6bn) for 2012, was more than the 18bn euros the banking group was granted in rescue funds from Spain’s eurozone partners last year. The bank, formed in 2010 by merging seven savings banks, was then acknowledged as one of Spain’s top financial entities.

It was heralded as the solution to the country’s banking problems following the 2008 collapse of the once-booming real estate sector.

But it was nationalised in May last year amid its exposure to the burst housing bubble, which plunged Spain into recession.

The results showed that Bankia offloaded bad property-linked assets worth 19.5bn euros last year to a “bad bank”, which was set up by Government to purge the toxic debt of Spain’s banks.

Under the terms of the 18bn-euro bailout, Bankia was obliged to close branches and reduce the workforce.

The company will close one-third of its branches, and though unions estimate the total at 4,500 job losses, no official figure has yet been quoted.

The slow, painful restructuring process for Spain’s banking sector has contributed to a growing, national unemployment rate of 26% in the overall workforce.

Youth unemployment stands at 55% and the outlook for growth remains uncertain.

That’s because economists say there is still a genuine risk

that Spain will need a sovereign bailout on top of the bank rescue.

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) output officially went down by 1.4% during 2012 as the economy shrank for the sixth straight quarter, from October to December, and at its most rapid quarterly rate since mid-2009.

And Spain’s economy is expected to shrink in 2013 for a second year in a row as a result of its deep-rooted problems, despite the optimism shown by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

Although exports have risen, retail sales have fallen for 30 straight months.

The EU wants Spain to lay out an ambitious plan of further structural reforms to the economy in the hope of bringing down the public deficit, which is expected to miss the Europe-imposed targets this year and next.

THE Spanish Prime Minister has reiterated that 2013 will be the last year of recession and that the situation will begin to improve in the second half of the year, which “will have a positive effect on unemployment”.

Mariano Rajoy said we should not so much focus on the forecasts, which depend on numerous factors, but rather on “maintaining an economic policy, fiscal consolidation, structural reforms and continuing with the reform of the banking sector, because that will put us in a position to grow and create jobs”.

In response to a question by the spokesperson for the Socialist Group (Grupo Socialista), Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, the President of the Government recalled that, “as the situation stands today, the forecast from the Government of Spain that 2013 will be the last year of recession, that the situation will begin to improve in the second half of the year

and that this will have a positive effect on unemployment”.

The most important issue in his opinion is to implement an economic policy capable of producing growth and jobs, and that “this is what we are doing and what we will continue to do”.

Furthermore, he emphasised the need to continue cleaning up the financial sector. He said this is “highly important for the availability of credit and therefore investment in employment”.

He added that “clear improvement has been already made to competitiveness, as can be seen from the balance of payments”.

In his opinion, the most positive result is that “this year’s public deficit will stand, and this is the figure we will send to the European Commission, at 6.7% in the end”. The President of the Government believes that this is the result of “an enormous effort by Spanish society as a whole because it also means 3.5% in structural terms”, something that no OECD country has ever done before, he said.

Mariano Rajoy said that all this means that “confidence in

Spain is growing” and that the Government of Spain is stronger in its conviction that its economic policy is the right policy, even though the results have not become clear yet.

In response to a question from the Member of the Lower House of Parliament for Convergència i Unió (CiU) [Catalan Nationalist Party], Pere Macías, the President of the Government said that the recent State of the Nation Debate was useful for the Government of Spain “to set future targets and announce new measures that will help achieve those targets, the most important of which are economic growth and job creation”.

In order to meet these targets, Mariano Rajoy expressed his willingness to speak with all the parliamentary groups in the Lower House.

He admitted that the majority held by the Partido Popular (PP) [People’s Party] “is a highly significant political asset” but that he is willing to speak with all parliamentary groups about any proposal they may have.

Mikel Erredondo,

from Amaiur, asked the President of the Government whether he is willing to join the efforts for peace being undertaken in the Basque Country.

Mariano Rajoy replied that “if, when you say ‘peace’, you mean the complete disappearance of all terrorist groups, the condemnation of their crimes, the laying down of their weapons, the payment of their dues to Justice and apologies to the victims of their actions and society as a whole, I can assure you that I have always been fully committed to that effort”.

The President of the Government added that he cannot accept any proposal “that disregards the law or that is based on the false assumption that ETA is or ever was justifiable in any way.

Neither can I accept any proposal that supposes we must pay an additional price for ETA to disband or any proposal that proclaims we have all made mistakes”.

Mariano Rajoy concluded by insisting that “nobody is indebted to ETA; the only solution is for ETA to disband”.

British Ambassador visits Tenerife THIS week the President of the Tenerife Cabildo, Ricardo Melchior, met with the British Ambassador to Spain, Giles Paxman and Consul to the Canaries, Stephen Paul Jones.

The meeting was used to analyse, among other issues, the situation of tourism in the island.

Melchior stressed the “special relationship” of the English and recalling that Tenerife is the main winter tourist destination of British tourists, and stressed his loyalty, as “great, most visit the island on more than one occasion.”

Melchior highlighted the positive effect of the English market, the leader ahead of the Spanish and Germans, in 2012 with over a million and a half British tourists visiting.

Meanwhile, Giles Paxman and Stephen Jones were interested in the projects being undertaken by the Cabildo among which the ALIX initiative, which aims to turn the island into a major center of the global telecommunications network through the development of Internet access or neutral NAP of West Africa-Canary Islands, Insular Ring Communications and Project CanaLink.

It was also noted that the work of the Cabildo and Tenerife Tourism has allowed, among

The Minister added that “the fact that, in

addition, if we are the preferred destination for German tourists, it strengthens us to continue on the same line as we are developing actions in Germany to attract more travellers of that nationality.”

Employees strengthen roads

THE Cabildo has added an additional 21 workers to help with the conservation and maintenance of the roads over here.

Employees will begin today (Friday) and will

be distributed in the north, centre and south of the island; the staff will attend incidents that occur daily, coordinated by the Highway Information Centre (CIC) and later help to reinforce crews.

General coordinator of Human Resources, Rosa Baena explained

that these contracts “will reinforce the work of crews to keep roads of the island in an optimal state. The City Council is committed to the job and has made an effort to respond to a need and of an essential public service such as maintenance and upkeep of the roads.”

Workers are incorporated into maintenance crews and conservation by the Tenerife Cabildo, whose main functions include the removal of objects and cleaning of roads, including discharges generally occurring when accidents occur. Baena Rosa recalled that the council can only hire staff when it’s essential to guarantee essential public services, like the maintenance of roads.

This measure is imposed by the context of containment and rationalisation of expenditure on human resources provided by the central government to correct the deficit, which expressly prohibits the recruitment in the public service.

I am a concerned mother of two girls aged 10 and 7 who belong to 1st Los Cristianos Brownies Unit. This is an organisation which is run by British volunteers in the South of Tenerife under the Girl Guide name.

It's a fantastic group of girls who meet once a week to enjoy activities such as painting, creating, reading and the completion of different tasks to achieve their badges.

The group consists of Rainbows aged 5 - 7, Brownies aged 8 - 11 and also Lone Guides.

At present the group has approximately 30 girls. Over the past 3.5 years the group has had to move from their original venue in Los Cristianos to another in Valle San Lorenzo.

They have now been asked to move from this new venue, unfortunately both venues have been church halls and in my opinion both churches have handled the situtation with a very unchristianlike manner.

The first insisted on charging them after they were promised the hall free, and the second venue they are having to leave as the pastor states that no one from the group attends church.

Please note that in both situations they have attended a number of services which included the brownies and rainbows and also attended carol services, etc.

Even though the Girl Guides is not a religious group they have also had an open door for the pastors to come and talk to the girls.

The group is not disruptive, it promotes manners, politeness and competitive spirit including the ability to be a member of a unique group in Tenerife.

It would be a terrible shame if this group folded and would be grateful if anyone had a suitable venue for them to use. They are covered by our own insurance under the Girl Guiding name.

Low-cost airlines still target Tenerife TENERIFE South, Barcelona’s El Prat and Madrid’s Barajas were the three most popular Spanish airports for budget-flight companies last month.

But the number of passengers travelling to Spain on the cheap dropped by 4% against last year’s figures, while traditional companies fared even worse, with a 7.7% fall.

Spain is still the

largest market for Britain’s low-cost firms, with three in 10 passengers flying there.

Yet numbers have fallen since the same period in 2012, with around half-a-million fewer British travellers and 300,000 fewer German passengers.

Italy, France and the Netherlands, in that order, make up the rest of the top five, but Italian and Dutch custom on cheap flights nosedived in

January by 20% and 14% respectively.

French fliers fell by 3%, but Scandinavian passenger numbers soared last month, with a 39% rise for Norway and 27% for Denmark.

Ryanair, easyJet and Vueling accounted for 55% of total lowcost flights to and from Spain, while the Canary Islands saw the most arrivals, followed by Catalunya, the Comunidad Valenciana, Madrid, Andalucía and the Balearic Islands.

Local News SWALLOWS Club members, who meet in the Apolo Centre, Los Cristianos, on Mondays, have always devoted their efforts to raising money for charity.

Now, they have turned their attentions to The Living Room, a new “drop-in” centre, doubling as a church on Sundays, in Playa de Las Americas, which caters for homeless people.

And not just the ones who have been homeless for many years, but for those rendered redundant and have, as a consequence, lost their homes and are now forced to fend for themselves while living on the streets.

The inhabitants are always in need of clothes and toiletries and, with that in mind, the Swallows have donating their own goods, as have members of the San Blas Catholic Church.

So much so, in fact, that Carole Hart, who

Living Room provides safe home from home runs the incrediblysuccessful Swallows with her husband Mike, is holding a boot sale at Guaza on Sunday to raise extra cash for the centre.

Carole said: “We have been absolutely inundated with all sorts of items, and particularly women’s clothes, some nearly new.

“And, as most people who use The Living Room are men, it makes sense to sell the clothes at a boot sale to raise cash for extra facilities.”

Beverley Corbett, a voluntary worker there, explained the thinking behind the centre saying: “We help in practical ways clothes, toiletries (especially part-used ones left by holidaymakers), contacting family back home, how to get medical help and also food to take away.

“Young people who come out looking for work, and to enjoy the party life, often get caught out as jobs are not as available as they thought.

“They struggle to pay rent, and then get caught up in alcohol, etc, especially those who may have left home because of relationship problems with family or boyfriends/girlfriends.

“We try to help them find work, contact family back home and give them a safe place to chat while they try and work things out.”

She added: “For both groups, if there is an addiction problem, we try to get them back home to family, find a place in a rehabilitation centre, sort out paperwork (with the help of the Consulate) and, for the homeless, find a place in a rehab here or in Gran Canaria.”

As well as the homeless, the room is frequented by local workers from the Strip, who pop in after

finishing their shift.

Strikes are costing Iberia firm millions IBERIA cabin crew, pilots and ground staff will down tools again from Monday to Friday in a second protest over the 3,807 redundancies planned by the airline.

The company says the staff sackings are down to restructuring plans to cut expenses, but the strikes are costing Iberia 10m euros a day through loss of revenue.

Another 1,300 flights will be cancelled, despite viable alternatives to the redundancies being offered by unions, including ways to enhance productivity, and pilots even proposing a 26% pay cut, Negotiations have reached stalemate, which means the

following flights by Iberia (431) Iberia Express (100), Vueling (316) and Air Nostrum (434) will be grounded.

The figure adds up to a total of 1,281, which is 59 more than last week’s five-day walk-out.

Flights through other companies, such as Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa, could also be cancelled or suffer delays. That’s because Iberia’s ground staff provide services for as many as 120 companies in Spanish airports.

And those flights which do get underway are likely to experience long delays.

People scheduled to fly into or out of Spain, particularly with one of the four Iberia affiliates,

should check with the airline to ensure their trip will still go ahead.

There’s even more trouble looming for Iberia as the next fiveday strike is planned for the week beginning 18th March, which will affect travellers going away for the Saint Joseph’s Day public holiday the day after.

That is when the huge Fallas festival takes place in the Comunidad Valenciana, involving thousands of tourists.

Ana Pastor, the Spanish Government’s Minister for Public Works and Infrastructure, has arranged for an independent mediator to solve the crisis, but nothing positive has yet occurred.

Stayaway German tourists?

THE Canary Islands Government expects a 3% drop in German tourists this year 2013, despite an encouraging 19,000 more to Tenerife in 2012.

World News WE all know about golf and tennis tours travelling around the world, but have you ever heard of horses going on tour?

Well they do, at least, showjumpers do, and riders from Britain, Ireland and Spain dominated the leader board in the second week of the Mediterranean Equestrian Tour at the Oliva Nova resort, in the Valencia province.

Although the first week saw only one UKbased combination in the professional classes, several more arrived in the second week and they held their own in this truly international showjumping event.

It featured horses and riders from as far afield as Japan, Israel, Australia, Brazil, Chile, Argentina and South Africa.

Last Friday’s largest and most prestigious class, the Gold 1.45m (4ft 9in) saw three Irish riders in the prize money: Bertram Allen, riding Bill Twomey’s Molly Malone, in third place, Niall Talbot, the country’s Olympic team member, on Nicos de la Cense, was 11th and Cameron Hanley, on Dundee VD Dwerse Hagen, 16th.

Standards were high and all those in the money jumped a double clear with no time faults, as did three others who were unplaced.

Spain and Ireland netted victories in the Gold 1.4m (4ft 7in) with the Jesús Garmendia, on Calvaro’s Koncert, in first place and Bertram Allen, on Wild Thing, coming second.

The UK’s Ray sisters had a disappointing six and eight faults respectively in the top-level amateur competition, the Bronze 1.4m, but MacKenzie made up for this by coming first on McKinley III, her second mount of the class.

Spain got their own back in both the other Bronze classes, with local girl Carmen Llácer winning the 1.25m (4ft 1in) on Ideal, and the 1.1m (3ft 7in) on Padua,

a whole second ahead of her sister Esther, on Rocket Power, who came just behind her, making the lap of honour a family affair.

Brit power hotted up on Saturday - as did Irish - as Jessica Kürten and Arezzo took fourth place in the Gold 1.45m - with Pippa Allen winning the Silver 1.4m on Espoir 17, and gaining sixth place in the Gold 1.4m on Fromecs Centaya.

Ireland’s Bertram Allen and Wild Thing came second in that class, while Britain’s

Grant Talbot, on Electra, won the Silver 1.2m. Compatriot Amy Carnet, riding Flirt also a Talbot horse came eighth.

But Spain retaliated in the Gold 1.3m (4ft 3in) with famous faces Carolina Aresu, on Xica, and Diana Marsa, on Oural d’Emiralia, coming second and third respectively.

And in the Bronze 1.1m, Esther and Carmen Llácer, on Rocket Power and Padua, came first and sixth.

Rocket Power lived up to his name by beating the super-speedy Gaston AZ, ridden by Spain’s María Tereas Ballester, and Primère, ridden by Britain’s Ashley Ray into second and third by a comfortable 3-second margin.

But it was Ashley’s turn for victory on Hasard de Favi in the Bronze 1.25m, and a near-miss for first place in the Bronze 1.4m for sister MacKenzie on Murphy’s Magic Touch.

On Sunday, the laps of honour were mostly led

by Spanish riders, with wins for Blanca Gil, on Jivaro du Fraigneau,

and Diana Marsa, riding Oural d’Emiralia in the Silver and Gold 1.3m classes. Three Spanish riders, Adolfo Tamamés, Luis Cabanas and Belén Serratosa, came second, third and fourth in the Bronze Grand Prix, while Carmen Llácer, enjoing her weekend, was second on Ideal in the Bronze 1.25m, where third place went to Spain’s Ana Martínez on Cassandra, and on Padua in the Bronze 1.1m, won by Ashley Ray on Primère.

Ireland’s Bertram Allen, on Zenzation, scooped up the Gold 1.4m in a tight finish, beating his nearest rival by just 0.03secs.

The Mediterranean Equestrian Tour took Monday off and restarted on Tuesday with the first of three days’ of “training” classes for young horses aged five, six and seven.

Then it’s back to the real thing today (Friday) with the last three days of “serious” competition - the final weekend of high fences and eye-watering prize-money until the second phase of the Tour, which starts on 19th March.

Boy band’s wrong Direction!

ONE DIRECTION, labelled the best boy band in the world recently, flopped miserably at this week’s NME Awards in East London.

Having conquered America in 2012, they were riding high last week as they picked up a Global Success prize at the Brit Awards,

But their achievements failed to impress the NME and they were named Worst Band, with frontman Harry Styles, who seems to draw attention to himself in more ways than one, was seen as Villain of the Year!

There was much better news for The Rolling Stones veterans and

Florence Welch, who both took home two awards.

The Stones, who played a series of 50th anniversary concerts last year, were named Best Live Band, and their documentary Crossfire Hurricane landed the Best Film prize.

Welch, of indie rock

band Florence + The Machine, was named best solo artist. The 26-year-old singer also provided the vocals to the track named Best Dancefloor Anthem, Sweet Nothing, by Calvin Harris.

The event, staged at The Troxy venue in Mile End, saw rock trio Biffy Clyro named Best

British Band, and The Killers were awarded the Best International Band prize.

Former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, who has worked with acts such as the Pet Shop Boys, Talking Heads and The Pretenders, took NME’s Godlike Genius title in tribute to his 30 years

in the music business.

The Cribs, for whom Marr was a guitarist for a brief time, took the prize for Outstanding Contribution to Music.

The Maccabees’ Given To The Wild, which was among the nominees for last year’s Mercury Prize, won the Best Album accolade.

Pope Benedict swims away from ‘rough seas’ forever POPE Benedict XVI stood down yesterday (Thursday) as leader of the world’s Catholics after nearly eight years.

The 85-year-old departs during a period in which the Church has been shrouded in controversy.

More than 100 cardinals said their farewells to the Pontiff at a gathering in the Clementine Hall in the Apostolic Palace at the Vatican.

On Wednesday, he made his final public appearance in front of an estimated 150,000 audience bidding an emotional farewell and acknowledging the “rough seas” that marked his papacy “when it seemed that the Lord was sleeping”.

In rare public outpouring for such

a private man, he alluded to some of the most difficult times of his papacy, which was dogged by sexabuse scandals, leaks of his private papers and reports of infighting among his closest aides.

“Thank you, I am very moved,” Benedict told the vast crowd in St Peter’s Square, a day before he became the first Pope to step down in six centuries.

Just before 4pm, Benedict left his apartments for the last time, thanked the senior staff who have been by his side during his papacy, and then make his way to the Vatican helipad.

From there, he flew to Castel Gandolfo, his retreat on the outskirts of Rome, and then made his final, brief appearance on a balcony in front of thousands of well-wishers before his

permanent retirement from public life. From now on, he will be known as Emeritus Pope and will devote his time to prayer and meditation - a spell broken only when he moves in to a monastery in the grounds of the Vatican once renovations have been completed.

He can still wear the white cassock normally reserved for Pontiffs only, but without a doubled shoulder cape.

And he has already swapped his trademark red shoes for a brown pair given to him by artisans in Mexico

during a trip last year.

The former Pope, who blamed old age for catching up with him, said when announcing his retirement last month: “I am doing this after much prayer, and in full liberty for the good of the church.”

The next Pope will be chosen by secret ballot during the conclave of eligible cardinals, who will vote in the Sistine Chapel.

And that could be Ghana’s Peter Turkson, an 11/4 favourite with Irish bookmakers Paddy Power to become the new Roman Catholic leader.

Benedict XVI’s departure from the Vatican set in motion a timetable of centuriesold traditions in what is an unprecedented resignation in modern Catholic history.

The Catholic Church now enters a period known as “Sede

Vacante” (vacant See), during which a senior cardinal takes over interim powers until a new Pope is elected.

That cardinal, referred to as the camerlengo or chamberlain, will be Italy’s Tarcisio Bertone.

The camerlengo has traditionally had the role of officially certifying the death of a Pope - once carried out by tapping the Pontiff’s forehead three times with a special silver hammer and calling out his birth name.

He is also charged with destroying the Fisherman’s Ring - a gold signet ring specially cast for each new Pope - which symbolises the end of a papacy.

From Monday, cardinals from around the world will hold a series of meetings known as general congregations.

The meetings are aimed at identifying

priorities for the Roman Catholic Church for the future, but are also a good way of vetting possible papal candidates.

The cardinals then meet in a secret conclave to choose the next Pope under a system adapted in the 13th century.

All conclaves have been held in the Sistine Chapel, and the cardinals are sworn to absolute secrecy under pain of excommunication during voting.

Two ballots are held in the morning, and two in the afternoon, until one candidate wins twothirds of the votes.

At the end of each session, the ballots are burned in a stove by the chapel, releasing smoke above the Apostolic Palace.

The smoke is black after each unsuccessful ballot, and white once the vote succeeds.

Violent kidnapping of young girl is now released as a film THE autobiography of a 25-year-old Swiss woman, victim of a horrifying kidnap when she was 10, has been turned into a film.

And it illustrates graphically the violence inflicted on Natascha Kampusch, showing her being raped by the captor, who beat and starved her during an 8½-year ordeal.

She was snatched on her way to school

by Wolfgang Priklopil and held in a cell under his garage near Vienna - where the film premiered - until she escaped in 2006.

The case made

Some more eye-openers from Pippa PIPPA MIDDLETON, whose book about party planning bombed after receiving scathing reviews from critics, is to become a columnist for Waitrose, offering culinary tips!

The sister of the Duchess of Cambridge will, from April, contribute to the supermarket chain’s monthly magazine.

She will share “casual dining ideas and recipes” in a column called Pippa’s Friday Night Feasts.

But who on earth took the decision to employ her?

Someone who had obviously not read her 2012 book called Celebrate, for which she was paid a fortune.

One entry reads: “At least 60 blows in the

face. Ten to 15 nauseainducing fist blows to the head. One strike with the fist with full weight to my right ear.”

The film shows occasional moments approaching tenderness, such as when Priklopil presents her with a cake for her 18th birthday, or buys her a dress as a gift.

Immediately, though, he scolds her for not knowing how to waltz with him.

British actress Antonia Campbell-Hughes, who plays the teenaged Ms Kampusch, said she had tried to portray “the strength of someone’s

soul, the ability of people to survive”.

Antonio, who has never met Ms Kampusch, said on her arrival for the premiere: “It was a very isolated time, a bubble of time, and I wanted to keep that very focused.”

Ms Kampusch attended the premiere, looking composed as she posed for pictures, but she refused to be interviewed.

Her ordeal was followed two years later by that of Josef Fritzl, an Austrian who held his daughter captive in a cellar for 24 years and fathered seven children with her.

Banksy’s stolen art is not going on sale

A CAMPAIGN by Haringey Council to stop the sale of a missing Banksy mural paid off because there was a last-gasp withdrawal of the lot in the States.

The picture by the world’s most famous street artist, called Slave Labour, was removed from the side of a Poundland shop under mysterious circumstances.

It showed a boy hunched over a sewing machine, making Union Flag bunting. But it disappeared from the wall suddenly, to the annoyance of locals, and turned up at Fine Art Auctions in Miami,

where it was expected to fetch up to £460,000.

The Florida Auction House spokesman said there were “no legal issues” but it had decided to withdraw two Banksy lots.

Local Wood Green councillor Alan Strickland said: “To have the mural withdrawn from sale at the 11th hour is a wonderful surprise for the community here.

It suggests the level of international media attention has had a real impact.”

Mr Strickland emailed FAA owner Frederic Thut to ask why the sale had not gone ahead, and whether there were any plans to auction it in the future.

The Metropolitan Police said there had been no reports of theft, and it is still unclear who intended to sell the artwork. A solicitor for Wood Green Investments, which owns the Poundland site, told Sky News: “My clients do not court publicity. But they find themselves in the quite remarkable position.

“If they deny removing the mural, they will become embroiled in an international criminal investigation that has already involved the FBI. “But if they admit

to consenting to the removal of the mural then they will become the target of abuse.”

It is not the first time murals have been removed and sold for huge sums.

French artist Thierry Noir contributed to the longest concrete painting in the world on the Berlin Wall.

But when the wall came down, his work was stripped by East German soldiers and sold in Monaco for £2m.

“It was the soldiers,” he said. “So what can I do against soldiers?

Nothing, except look at those soldiers.

“It took them one week to take the complete pieces I paint in Berlin, but it was too strong for me so I had to accept it.”

Mo sees the Fly local funny side MO FARAH, Britain’s double Olympic golden boy last summer, has defended an American TV presenter who had no idea who he was.

After Mo had broken the course record in the New Orleans half-marathon at the weekend, LaTonya Norton, from the local TV station, asked him if it was his “first time”.

The 29-year-old 5,000m and 20,000m champion responded good-naturedly, saying: “I have run a halfmarathon before, but this is the first time in New Orleans.”

Norton went on to describe his 61-minute record for the 13.1-mile course as “absolutely

amazing”.

And it would have been had Mo not been feted globally (except in the US, it seems), for his magnificent double at the London Olympics some months earlier.

The TV footage of the interview, which, subsequently, appeared to have been removed

from the WSDU website, went viral and sparked thousands of derogatory comments about the presenter on Twitter. However, fairminded Mo posting a tweet on the social networking site, saying: “Just wanna say to everyone being nasty to LaTonya Norton,

please stop!! She made a mistake like we all do!! She didn’t mean anything by it!”

He also responded to a tweet from CNN presenter Piers Morgan, writing: “Haha it was bit funny ...!! I felt sorry for her ... So I tried to help her out ...!! All good though!”

LaTonya compounded her mistake by asking Farah if he intended to enter any more events.

When he replied that he was looking to run half the full London Marathon course in April, she said: “You’re certainly off to a good start.”

Farah is no stranger to being overlooked in the US because in December he was stopped by customs officers at an airport there as a “possible terrorist”.

A NEW campaign has been launched urging travellers to use Manchester Airport (MAP) when booking cheap flights to Tenerife and other destinations.

Manchester is the third largest airport in the UK, with a catchment area covering the entire North of England, equating to around 22 million potential passengers - 20 million of them within two hours’ drive time or less.

With flights to more than 200 destinations, the airport’s route network is larger than that of Heathrow, yet around four million people each year still choose to fly from the two London gateways, rather than the one on their doorsteps.

MAP is now tackling this with a new ‘Fly Manchester’ campaign, urging people in its catchment area to use their local airport in preference to other gateways.

About £85m was recently spent redeveloping

the three terminals, making the airport even more attractive to local passengers, who already benefit from cheap, easy parking and an excellent range of domestic flights.

Ken O’Toole, chief commercial officer for the MA Group, said: “We have an unrivalled network of services – and our range continues to grow … boosting the options for summer 2013.

“The Fly Manchester campaign recognises it is absurd that people from the North should fly from London when they could do so from Manchester, much closer to where they live.”

One of the airlines based at Manchester is Jet2.com, which has routes all the way to Tel Aviv in Israel.

This summer, it will be offering cheap flights to Tenerife, Alicante and 36 other exciting destinations, including two new ones: Menorca and Corfu.

NO ONE wants old dogs, but they have their advantages. You don’t need to housetrain them for one.

We think they deserve to end their days, after years in a refuge, possibly, in a loving home, but we do understand the worries regarding health care.

A camera was stolen on 12th February at about 5pm from Las Vistas beach in Los Cristianos. As you stand on the beach it was to the right and just down from the WCs and showers.

The bag is black with red interior, rectangular and contained a Cannon EOS 400 camera and a Panasonic video camera. It also contained a silver tripod.

The memory cards just contained family pictures and films of myself, my husband and 2 young boys.

It was pleasing to see so many new faces joining us on our first monthly Fun Dog Walk of the year.

So many people stopped to speak with us and make a fuss of the dogs, and there were regular water stops for our four-legged friends.

All in all, a pleasant afternoon was had by all, and the next date and venue will be posted soon.

A few of our new supporters have volunteered to walk the refuge dogs on a regular basis, and if you would

The refuge is situated

at the Granadilla Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to the ecological park ITER, by the windmills.

The last week has again seen a large intake of puppies and dogs from the streets of our local municipalities.

On one day alone, eight dogs were brought to the refuge by Protection Civil, which means Accion’s vets are constantly busy.

Marion, in charge of affairs there, spends a lot of her time trying to find loving homes for the many dogs under her control.

We desperately need towels, blankets and tinned dog food for the puppies and sick dogs, and if you would like to help this worthwhile cause, all donations will be gratefully received.

Lions’ Charter Night goes off with a twist and shout!

THERE were dinner suits and posh frocks in abundance at the prestigious Paradise Park Hotel on Saturday as Tenerife Sur Lions Club celebrated its 28th Charter Year.

The 60-plus members and guests mingled together, renewing old acquaintances and making new ones on the Los Cristianos hotel’s Strelitzia Restaurant terrace for pre-dining drinks and canapés.

Lions’ President Norman Goodall MBE addressed the seated diners before the meal, saying that although the evening did have a certain formality, it was predominantly a celebration of the club’s birthday or charter anniversary.

And he promised more of a party atmosphere throughout the evening, with some excellent entertainment lined up for later.

Norman went on to also highlight the clubs’ two main projects, supporting holidays

for under-privileged children, and drew attention to the evening’s printed programme, featuring photographs of some of the holiday activities.

He added that this year will see a 40-strong group from Tenerife going to the UK, with a second group of 50 be coming from there to Tenerife and, for the first time, a small group visiting from Poland.

The President paid tribute to the staff of the club’s charity shops in Costa del Silencio and Los Cristianos, and praised the public for their continuing, tremendous level of support with donated items.

He laid great emphasis on the fact that without both entities, Tenerife Sur Lions Club would be unable to fulfil the increasing number of requests from both local governments and social services to help families in real distress - not just with food but with clothing and other

household essentials.

Finally, Norman praised all the members, wives, partners and helpers, who supported the event, with a particular thanks to Ken and Beryl Sadler, who organised the whole evening.

“It’s all the little things and attention to detail that make this another night to remember,” he said. “Thank you both.”

The guests then enjoyed the five-course menu, accompanied by excellent wines and finishing with coffee and liqueurs, further enhanced by the exceptional service of the waiters.

To complement the

evening, there was music, dancing and entertainment.

With compere Ken Sadler introducing three superb cabaret acts, everyone was soon enjoying the “Fabulous Music of the Sixties” with Vanessa Vee. Back by popular demand, and filling the dance floor, was the equally-fabulous sound of the Tuxedo Knights.

As the evening drew towards a close, the Helpers, a Beatles tribute band, brought a cavalcade of The Beatles hit songs, to Help everyone get in the mood to Twist and Shout the night away!

It’s Fun Chino time SAN Miguel Lions are staging another of their entertaining events on Sunday in Silencio at the Chinatown Restaurant, Trebol.

The theme is a Fun Chino Afternoon, from 1.45pm, and included is a meal, live

entertainment, houseyhousey, dancing and a quiz, plus much more.

Tickets, just 12 euros, can be bought at the Lions Charity Shop in Silencio (open daily between 10am-2pm), or from Angela (646 448 556).

South West Judging. The nation's greatest chefs are competing to cook at a special banquet at the Royal Albert Hall to celebrate 25 years of Comic Relief's Red Nose Day and celebrate the unsung heroes of charity work.

Not only do they have to deliver a performance on a plate to win, they will also have to put a smile on everyone's face. The chefs will also be set fundraising challenges to raise money for Comic Relief. It's decision time for the chefs from the South West.

One chef left the competition yesterday and only two remain, who will cook their entire menus for the Great British Menu judges.

Howard Goodall’s Story Of Music: The Popular Age BBC2, 21.30 In the sixth and final episode of Howard Goodall’s Story of Music, composer and presenter Howard Goodall presents his view of the last hundred years in music, the Popular Age. Howard suggests that it has been a period when classical music, as it is now generically referred to, seemed to many to be in retreat, crisis or even terminal decline. However, Howard believes that rumours of its death have been much exaggerated. He argues that while some cutting-edge works proved too challenging to win the hearts of a mainstream audience, the DNA of classical music, as it had been constituted since the time of Monteverdi in the 1600s, is alive and well in the musical theatre, in the cinema and in much popular music.

Howard believes that popular music, after the First World War, was most able to comment on social and political issues including the rise of fascism and racism in the USA, with works such as The Threepenny Opera, Porgy and Bess, Billie Holiday’s signature song Strange Fruit, and West Side Story.

It’s May Day and a small community waits excitedly for this year’s pagan parade to begin. Local teenager and dark horse, Linus Newcombe, watches woefully as the love of his life, Caitlin Sutton, kisses a rival. Meanwhile, on the other side of town, Caitlin’s twin and the beautiful young May Queen, Hattie Sutton, travels on her journey to appear as the town’s symbol of new life.

On her journey she catches Linus’s father Everett’s eye as she rides by on her bicycle, before passing PC Alan Hill, who makes his way home after a difficult shift. Meanwhile, wealthy community figure and property developer Malcolm Spicer smokes a cigarette, waiting for his nagging wife Gail to leave the house – is that malice in his eyes as Hattie cycles past? Lastly, Spiritual local misfit Seth dances a jig, disguised as a ‘Green Man’ and watching on as sinister morris men circle Hattie, chanting a foreboding pagan ditty.

At the parade, Fiona Hill - wife of Alan and ex-copper, now housewife, struggles to get her three kids to the festivities on time, wondering when Alan will show. Meanwhile, wannabe local hero Steve Docker helps to organize the parade, wary that oddball Seth might at any point ruin his do-good image.

When the innocent and well-loved Hattie fails to appear, the town is sent spinning by the knowledge that someone in their midst has taken her.

Packed in a huddle, the emperor chicks have to be identity checked before they are fed, and their parents are swamped by hungry impostors.

Giant petrels are an ever-present danger, while vampire bats target the Humboldts. As the young grow bigger and preen out baby fluff they sport punk hairdos. The emperor chicks go skating on a newly-formed ice rink, while the rockhopper chicks practice jumping skills. Eventually all the chicks leave for the sea, tackling the same hazards as their parents before them.

HMP Aylesbury houses some of the most dangerous criminals in Britain, including murderers, rapists, violent gang members and paedophiles. One in five of the inmates is serving a life or indeterminate sentence, but what makes this prison exceptional and disturbing is that the oldest among them is just 21. Behind the crumbling Victorian perimeter, 434 prisoners live in cells in seven separate wings. It is often the officers who are the brunt of these young men's frustrations, with frequent floodings, dirty protests and assaults on staff.

Their quest starts in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, and some of the worst traffic jams in the world. After taking many hours to escape the city, the plucky trio begin their journey towards what their maps tells them is the most distant source of the Nile.

Official guidelines now mean that every hospice and hospital has to have an approved end of life pathway, and the LCP is by far the most prevalent. An estimated 130,000 people last year died after being placed on the LCP and many of us can expect to have our deaths, or those of our loved ones, managed using the pathway.

However, the process has become hugely controversial. It is not only those with terminal cancer who are now being put on the LCP. Many more patients are now put on the pathway following other illnesses such as strokes and some families are claiming that their relatives could, and should, have lived longer.

Coming Soon: Breathless ITV has announce the commissioning of new medical drama, Breathless, a stylish and compelling six-part series set in London in 1961, starring JACK DAVENPORT (Smash, Pirates of the Caribbean). The drama follows the lives of a group of doctors and nurses working in a London hospital, a world in which everything and everyone has their place. But underneath this veneer simmers a cauldron of lies, deceptions and guilty secrets, driven by love, ambition and sex.

Breathless has been co-created and written by Paul Unwin, who will also direct the first two episodes of the series. The other writers are Peter Grimsdale (the show’s co-creator) and Simon Tyrrell (Lightfields, Survivors). The series opens in 1961, a time when Britain was on the brink of the ‘60s revolution – abortion is illegal and the contraceptive pill is only just available to married women. Set in and around a busy Gynaecology unit, medicine becomes the perfect stage to play out the shifting and complex moral codes of early 1960s society.

Jack Davenport plays Otto Powell, a brilliant and charismatic surgeon, who passionately believes he can make a difference to women’s lives, even if that means risking imprisonment under the abortion laws of 1961.

Otto and his elegant wife, Elizabeth, preside over the rich ensemble of characters – they are the beautiful people living the consumerist dream and the couple that the others aspire towards. But Otto and Elizabeth are hiding a devastating secret about their marriage - an event in their past which could shatter the careful illusion they have created.

Presenter Joe Crowley catches up with some of the people previously featured on Britain's Empty Homes. In this episode, Joe returns to the West Sussex coast to see how Andrew and Catherine Ingram have been getting on with renovation of their property.

When Joe first met the couple, they were newlyweds and had just bought a house built in the early 1900s. The house had been empty for almost 12 months and had been left practically untouched. Eighteen months on, Joe is keen to see how far they have got in transforming the property into their dream home.

We also return to Berkshire to find out how a training initiative to teach heritage skills to young people has progressed, and we meet Thanet's new empty property officer, Andrew Emmerson, as he views new homes on the development of a once derelict hotel in Margate.

The tie is delicately poised at 1-1 following the first leg at the Bernabeu, which saw United take the lead through Danny Welbeck, before former Red Devil Cristiano Ronaldo equalised for his current employers. The home side will enter this match as slight favourites seeing as they managed to score an away goal in the Spanish capital, but given both sides’ attacking capabilities the prospect of a 0-0 draw seems unlikely, especially as manager Jose Mourinho will be eager to steer Real to a 10th European Cup in what has been a turbulent campaign. Gogglebox Channel 4, 22.00 Every night over 20 million of us enjoy an evening in front of the telly, but imagine if the TV looked back at you - what would it see? Channel 4 goes into the living rooms across Britain to get the nation’s real reactions to the week’s biggest and best TV shows.

Gogglebox is a brand new entertainment factual series which will see Britain’s most opinionated households comment freely on the biggest and best shows on television. On the karaoke trail

By Jamie Drew EXACTLY a quarter of a century ago, I bought my first karaoke machine from Dixons, in Nottingham.

Since then, the phenomenon of karaoke in bars and entertainment venues worldwide has grown in popularity.

The technology that facilitates this popular pastime has also improved, and gone are the days of the 12in Laser disc.

They looked really futuristic at the time but, in today’s world of technological advancement, they are somewhat oldfashioned.

In “the old days”, one disc would contain 14 tracks only, but one memory stick can hold upwards of 2,500 songs.

The tech has changed the way karaoke functions, from multiple perspectives.

Firstly, with the way a participant requests a song to sing.

The necessity of filling out a karaoke slip with details of the disc and track number is all but redundant, and all that a compere or Dj really requires is the person’s name. Accessibility so fast now, with the use of computer-based karaoke programmes, that it takes seconds to load a song into a player.

This enables a fast turn around of singers.

In fact, my opinion of request slips is that they are surplus to requirement. Most bars get the same singers in every night, and, generally, they sing the same songs - quite often, in the same order.

Therefore, I prefer to have just a list of names and call them up as and when it’s their turn, and they simply tell me what they want to sing.

Then my lightning fingers fly across the keyboard and, seconds later, they’re singing.

It saves paper and printer ink - and my equipment is not covered in scraps of paper and torn-up beer mats.

Let’s face it, some karaoke slips are a little

less legible than a GP’s prescription pad. The word-of-mouth method works for me, anyway.

Karaoke-style moonlighting THERE are a number of factors which contribute to a busy bar, but when that bar uses karaoke as the main stay of its entertainment format, there are certain things that make people come back night after night.

Singers will always return if the venue’s

IT was also pleasing this week to bump into Mark Bomber and his wife, Liz, who own the Brewers Droop on The Patch.

Mark is a karaoke pioneer and knows the importance of looking after your karaoke singers to keep them coming back.

For over a decade, Mark was in the driving seat at the Brewers Droop before returning to the UK, leaving the bar to be managed by veteran publicans Dean and Jo Bull.

sound is spot-on, and if they can hear themselves sounding good, they will always come back.

The Moonlight Bar is one such bar, providing a good sound, a quick turn-around of singers and lots of returns.

Resident compere Lee has been in situ at Moonlight for almost 20 years. Talk about long service and good conduct, you’d re ceive a medal in the Army for that length of service.

Lee is probably the most experienced karaoke compere on the Island and nothing fazes him. Also, he is quite happy to take a back seat and let the singers provide the entertainment.

As a venue, The Moonlight has always remained right up to date with its song list, and it is often the first to add new songs to its collection.

Manager Mick Farmer offers a full weekly complement of cabaret shows - two every night from 11pm, featuring live bands, comedy shows and some of Tenerife’s finest vocalists.

It is one of many bars here now putting on entertainment in the afternoons. And Wednesday is definitely an afternoon not to miss because at 3pm every week, you can catch The Swinging White Nights, who are brilliant.

The staff are lovely people, too. Mick has been at the helm for a

decade and most of the staff have also been in their jobs for a number of years.

Kerry has worked there for seven years, and when I asked her what it is that makes the staff stay so long at The Moonlight Bar, she said, quite simply: “The hours are good and all the staff have proper rotas, giving them three day shifts and three night shifts.

She went on to say that it was important to have fun when you’re working in this environment, and to pace yourself.

Go along to The Moonlight Bar and see for yourself. If you love karaoke, you’ll love it.

Get the goss THIS week I was also in Bla Bla Bla, San Eugenio, where a

popular but normally reserved tribute act decided to treat a birthday girl with a striptease.

Not just the normal “take your shirt off and swing it around”. I’m talking the full Monty, the birthday suit! I bet he regrets it now.

It would be wrong of me to tell you who it was, but I can tell you that it was a Michael Buble Tribute.

So karaoke fans, I’ll probably see some of you on the TLK trail in the near future.

DIY sees healthy performances ALTHOUGH total consumer durable spending was down by 2.8 percent in 2012 (Y/E December 2012), DIY/ Gardening remained stable in the market.

The 3.9 percent decline seen within the sector (2012 vs 2011), was primarily down to the poor performance of gardening products, which particularly suffered during the harsh weather conditions throughout the year.

DIY goods, however, witnessed a drop of only 0.7 percent (Y/E December 2012).

Power tools for example, fell by 10.5 percent in terms of units, but only by 2.3 percent in value (Y/E December 2012). There is an encouraging trend towards internet purchasing as online sales for total consumer durables in the UK reached their highest level in 2

years (19 percent). A market analyst said, “Despite the appalling weather conditions negatively affecting the Garden markets in 2012, the DIY sectors have remained relatively robust in value terms.

This is in part due to the increasing average prices across many sectors and range mix. In some areas we are seeing an overall increase in pricing due to feature developments in a category. For example, key to growth within power

tools are cordless hammer drills, a product which is more expensive than the average drill and could be due to a perceived benefit consumers are willing to pay for. In addition we see the internet as a growing sector of the market which is seemingly encouraging consumers to trade up. In the example of power tools, consumers are spending almost 20 percent more on an average purchase online than in store.”

Hydrangea

By David Hudgell THESE colourful plants are somewhat retro in my mind, as they seem to have been around for a long time and conjure up images of wartime Britain. But their longevity and popularity is because they are such a stalwart.

As Mother’s Day looms, Marks and Spencer have a potted version available, which once purchased will last not just the week but for a number of years (you need to check though that it is a plant and not just stems) great value for money.

The local garden

centre here has some beautiful specimens, in pale pastel shades.

They’re easy to grow, ideal for patios and

terraces and you just need to keep them well watered. Make sure they don’t get too pot bound either.

The Hydrangeas I’ve seen this week cost about eight euros for a small to medium sized plant, but are definitely worth the money. Better perhaps than the three euro cyclamen I bought two weeks ago from a low cost supermarket, thinking I had bagged a bargain and for whatever reason did not even last 24 hours. We live and learn.

Flowers from spring to autumn!

The exquisite flowers create a full moptop of colour. The soft green leaves and strong upright growth make this an ideal shrub for beds and borders or pots on the

patio. Flowers AprilSeptember. Height 1.2m (4’). They prefer full sun or partial shade.

Unlike annuals, perennials and shrubs will put on a show not just for one season but for many years to come.

There is now a Hydrangea that climbs which I’ve never seen before.

The deciduous climber allows you to take your displays to new heights!

The stems develop rootlike holdfasts to aid with climbing, and the sweetly scented spring flower heads are of the lacecap type, with large sterile white flowers surrounding the small fertile inner blooms.

The heart-shaped green leaves often turn an attractive yellow in autumn too! It only flowers though between May and June.

IT seems to me that hair colouring has come full circle. Gone are the days of gaudy stripes and a mish-mash of colouring to make an effect.

Today’s colouring has evolved into a whole new era. Nowadays, colouring should enhance your style and give shine and definition to your cut, which should always be your priority.

Forget using dramatic colours to give you your style because the cut should be utmost with the colour following on.

Today’s colouring methods are so much more advanced and, when used correctly, they shouldn’t cause harm to your hair.

I like using full block colours at the moment to cover any dryness, or to blend away those white hairs.

A block colour is a guarantee of a clean and healthy look to the hair. I don’t like to see too many colours going on to one head as this can look dated and fussy - simple is best!

Colours coming through this season are still your reds, chocolates and warmer tones. Blondes are ashy or slightly warm and natural, but never golden or brassy.

They are perfect to show a touch of colour without going overboard.

We rarely seem to see colour overload nowadays in the salon because clients seem to want what’s best for their hair and skin tone, rather than the “look” of the moment.

I hate to see anything overdone, and when I do, then it’s normally blonde, but I’d rather leave that look behind.

We use a system in the salon of a good cut, a good colour and complete aftercare at home. These three things always work well together and never fail to produce first-class hair. So forget skip-

ping your home-care routine as this is what keeps your hair looking good until your next salon visit.

I love it when clients return to the salon after six weeks and tell me they are still getting compliments.

That’s what it’s all about.

The worst thing is having a quick fix so you look good as you leave the salon, only for your hair to look bad the next day.

Good hairdressing is a combination of your professional stylist and you being able to create your look easily at home.

Remember, your hair shouldn’t be a chore. It should look great, with minimum effort and fuss!

ONE-THIRD of regular gym users don’t have time to break sweat during workouts - they’re too busy soaking in a sauna or the hot tub.

Only about half actually complete a serious fitness routine, while the rest spend their time chatting with friends, or checking out potential partners.

Meanwhile one in 10 like to chill out by the pool, while one in 20 simply go along to watch football matches on the big screen TVs. A new survey found that although so called

keep-fitters spend a weekly average of two hours at the gym, 29% do not go near the equipment.

And 10% of the 2,000 gym-goers polled admitted they would be embarrassed if they did because they might sweat.

Women were the worst offenders; they are too concerned that their make-up will smudge, or that their hair will frizz if they sweat too much.

That could be because 10% say they joined the gym to meet the opposite sex - and a further 10% enlist because it is trendy.

Also, many of those who are new

to working-out are also too embarrassed to ask for help with some of the equipment even though help is readily available from staff because they feel they would look stupid.

The survey said: “Some gym fees can cost eye-watering sums per year, and it can amount to a total waste of money, especially if you are reading while on the treadmill.

“While you need to warm down after exercise, and chilling around the pool is great, it does seem a little pointless paying for the use of high-tech machines if you are not using them properly, if at all.”

Conversely, the research revealed that it provided a useful reason to get out of the house for 29% of gymgoers.

And a crafty 13% claim to go off the gym, but actually slope off somewhere else.

By Val Sainsbury THE devastating legacy of “Binge Britain” has been uncovered by startling official statistics.

These show that 9.5% of 4-5-year-olds, who started infant school (Reception class) last year, were clinically obese.

Data from the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) also showed that a fifth of pupils in Year Six - aged 1011 - were excessively overweight.

Overall, three in 10 boys and girls, aged 2-15, were classed as either overweight or obese, which means that England’s obesity epidemic has become progressively worse over the past 20 years.

Shocking obesity at infant schools are officially overweight or obese.

The HSCIC discolsed that between 1993 and 2011, there was a “marked increase” in the proportion of adults who were obese.

In 1993, 13% of men and 16% of women were obese, and the figures soared to 24% and 26% respectively by 2011.

And figures also show that there has also been a stark rise in obesity-related hospital admissions.

In the 2011-12 period, 11,740 people were admitted to hospitals in England with a primary diagnosis of obesity - triple the number recorded five years earlier. And three times as many women were admitted than men.

The north of England recorded the highest admission rate, with 56

of every 100,000 people staying in hospital because of their weight.

The East of England recorded the lowest admission rates at 12 per 100,000.

The data also revealed a shocking increase in the number of weightloss procedures being carried out.

In 2011-12, 8,790 people underwent a procedure to help them lose weight - over four times more than the number conducted in 2006-07 - such as stomach-stapling or a gastric bypass Coincidentally, household purchases of fresh and processed fruit and vegetables have been on a downward trend since 2008, with fruit purchases 4.1% lower in 2011.

The amount of vegetables purchased dropped by 2.4%, with

a 6.6% reduction in purchases of fresh, green vegetables.

Graham Rowan, chairman of the Obesity Management Association, said: “The obesity epidemic is steadily spiralling out of control.”

Amy Thompson, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, added:

“These figures hold a mirror to the state of the country’s health and unhealthy lifestyle choices are helping us along this path.

“Alarmingly, over one in 10 children are now classed as obese when they start school, but education is the way to break this cycle.

“By teaching young children about healthy

eating and inspiring them to be active, we can help these kids towards a healthier future.”

Health Minister Dr Dan Poulter said: “We are already taking the lead to help people make healthier choices. By working with industry, we have helped reduce fat, sugar and salt in foods.”

C-section babies are prone to an unhealthy start in life A BABY’S chances of developing allergies increases hugely if the mum has a caesarean birth.

In fact, those delivered

by C-section are five times more likely than those born naturally to become allergic to common triggers, such as dust mites and pets.

Research scientists believe the babies are left vulnerable by avoiding the journey through the birth canal, which would normally expose them to their mother’s bacteria.

The discovery lends support to the “hygiene hypothesis”, linking childhood allergies to over-clean conditions early in life.

Lead researcher Dr Christine Cole Johnson, from the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, said: “This further advances the theory that early childhood exposure to micro-

organisms affects the immune system’s development and onset of allergies.

“We believe a baby’s exposure to bacteria in the birth canal is a major influence on its immune system.”

The research team studied 1,258 newborns and assessed them when they were one month, six months, then aged one and two.

By two years of age, babies born by C-section were much more likely to have developed allergies from such things as the droppings of dustmites around the house, and dead skin shed by dogs and cats.

Umbilical cord and stool samples from each baby were analysed, together with blood samples from both parents, as well as breast milk and household dust.

Information was also

collected on every family’s history of allergy or asthma, household pets, tobacco smoke exposure, baby illnesses, medication use, and aspects of pregnancy.

Half of all UK children and teenagers will have experienced allergies by their 18th birthday.

Maureen Jenkins, director of clinical services at the Allergy UK charity, said: “During a natural birth, the baby travels slowly down the birth canal, where it ingests normal bacteria, which has been shown to aid a healthy immune response and protect against allergy.

“In the case of a caesarean section, the baby has no contact with the birth canal.

Instead, it is removed from a sterile environment immediately, meaning the chances of developing allergy could be heightened.”

A treat for Mother’s Day MOTHERING Sunday is on 10th March. Plan ahead and make some tasty cupcakes.

These can be tailored to the individual, and can be baked so easily.

It takes less than 30 minutes to prepare them, 10-30 minutes cooking time, and you will probably find most or all of the ingredients in the larder and fridge.

Ingredients 110g/4oz butter or margarine, softened at room temperature 110g/4oz caster sugar 2 free-range eggs, lightly beaten 1 tsp vanilla extract 110g/4oz self-raising flour 1-2 tbsp milk For the buttercream icing 140g/5oz butter, softened 280g/10oz icing sugar 1-2 tbsp milk a few drops food colouring Preparation Preheat the oven to

180C/350F/Gas 4 and line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper cases.

Cream the butter and sugar together in a bowl until pale. Beat in the eggs a little at a time and stir in the

vanilla extract. Fold in the flour using a large metal spoon, adding a little milk until the mixture is of a dropping consistency. Spoon the mixture into the paper cases until they are

half full. Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes, or until golden-brown on top and a skewer inserted into one of the cakes comes out clean.

Set aside to cool for 10 minutes, then remove from the tin and cool on a wire rack.

Icing on the cake For the buttercream icing, beat the butter in a large bowl until soft.

Add half the icing sugar and beat until smooth.

Then add the remaining icing sugar with one tablespoon of the milk, adding more milk if necessary, until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Add the food colouring and mix until well combined.

Spoon the icing into a piping bag with a star nozzle and pipe the icing using a spiralling

motion on to the cup cakes in a large swirl.

Lemon Drizzle Cake Ingredients For the lemon drizzle 4 lemons, juice only 75g/2¾oz caster sugar For the sponge 200g/7oz caster sugar 200g/7oz unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing 2 lemons, zest only 3 free-range eggs, beaten 200g/7oz self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting For the filling 2 free-range egg yolks 75g/2¾oz caster sugar 50g/1¾oz unsalted butter 2 lemons, juice and zest 100g/3½oz mascarpone Preparation method Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.

Grease a 20cm/8in

springform cake tin with butter, then add a small amount of flour, turn the cake tin to coat the sides and bottom and shake out any excess.

For the lemon drizzle, in a bowl, mix together the lemon juice and sugar until the mixture is well combined and the sugar has melted.

Set aside.

For the sponge, beat the sugar, butter and lemon zest in a mixing bowl until pale and fluffy, using an electric whisk.

Gradually add the eggs, whisking after each addition until the egg is completely incorporated into the mixture before adding the next. Carefully fold in the flour using a metal spoon.

Pour the cake batter into the prepared cake tin and bake in the oven for 30-40 minutes, or until the sponge has risen and is cooked through. (The sponge is cooked through when a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean.)

As soon as the cake is cooked, remove it from the springform cake tin and prick the top all over with a cocktail stick. Pour over the lemon drizzle mixture to soak the sponge, then set aside to cool on a wire rack.

For the filling, whisk the egg yolks and sugar together in a pan over a low to medium heat until the sugar has melted.

Add the butter, lemon juice and zest, and continue to cook, whisking continuously, for 4-5 minutes, or until the mixture has thickened and is smooth and well combined. Set aside to cool completely.

Using a metal spoon, carefully fold the mascarpone into the cooled lemon curd mixture to create a marbled effect.

When the sponge has cooled, cut the cake in half horizontally to create two thinner cakes. Spread the lemon filling all over the lower half of the cake, then place the top half (the half that was pricked and soaked in the lemon drizzle) on top.

Tai Pan really is Imperial!

THIS restaurant exudes class in every detail, whether it’s the decor, the uniforms, the lighting, the service or, obviously, the superb cuisine, no stones have been left unturned in their quest to give the diner the ultimate experience.

We were greeted by Alex and shown to our seats (good idea to book as it gets really busy here), and he took our drinks order while we checked out the menu.

With last year’s namechange also came a revised menu, with over 70 new dishes and many variations to give a different spin - even old favourites.

We decided to order from the main Chinese menu, and there are many, many choices in starters and main courses.

So we picked the brains of Alex to recommend some of the new additions - and we weren’t disappointed.

He also pointed out that if you are a sushi lover, this is the place to be. And with 20 new dishes added to the already-huge choice, he wasn’t kidding.

However, on this occasion we were ordering from the gourmet Chinese menu so, with chopsticks in hand, we begin the feast.

First to the table was the War Tip: four North China steamed pork dumplings, griddled

and stuffed with sweet cabbage and seasoned pork, perfectly cooked and extremely succulent and tasty.

They were closely followed by fresh,

steamed scallops in our choice (there are three) of ginger and spring-onion topping; so many flavours in one dish, but each one complementing the

next. With Char sui honey roast rack of ribs to finish our choice of starters, and the meat just falling from the bone - plus the flavours from the char sui marinade, honey and sesame seeds all blending into one taste explosion - it convinced us that all three starters were the perfect choice for us.

The main courses were no exception to

flavours and texture, either: for my partner, a fabulously-prepared sea bass, coated in a feather-light tempura batter and served in a rich, spicy, black-bean sauce on a bed of rice.

This was beautifully cooked, and the pure, white meat had the unmistakeable flakiness synonymous with this tasty fish. Incredible!

For me, crispy fragrant duck. This was a sliced

half-duck, crisped on the outside, and with the taste of moist meat in the centre, mixing with the red wine and black pepper Peking sauce, it really hit the mark on every level.

Dessert for me came in the form of a homemade, three-chocolate cheesecake, served with ice cream and cream very morish.

For my partner a cheeky, Secret Squirrel cocktail, which provided a fresh and fruity end to a wonderful meal.

So to all at Imperial Tai Pan, from the waiting staff to the chefs, from the bar staff to the management, thank you for a glorious evening.

1. Forgetting your passport There are little mistakes and there are big mistakes, but this really is a show-stopper. And it is commonly made. You may be ok for domestic flights on some scheduled airlines (eg. BA), as you don’t actually need your passport, or any photo ID. Just your bank card will suffice. But budget airlines will take a hardline approach.

2. Letting your passport expire Some countries won’t even let you in if your passport is due to expire in a few weeks, or even months, so, giving yourself plenty of time before you leave, check entry requirements for the country you are visiting, check the date on your passport, and renew it if you need to.

3. Packing away your passport/ boarding card Keep your travel documents handy, in your hand luggage. You need easy access to your passport and boarding pass at check-in, at the departure gate, at passport control.

4. Forgetting to print your boarding pass Again, it depends who you’re flying with. Like it or not, if you’re in the hands of certain low-cost airlines, they will charge you for printing your boarding pass at the airport.

5. Packing too much The tension is unbearable. You plonk your suitcase onto the conveyor belt, the numbers shoot up, the scales settle… and you’re over the weight limit.

6. Not leaving yourself enough time to get to the airport Be sure to over-estimate how long it takes to get to the airport. If your check-in time is 6am on a Sunday, obviously the roads should be clear so no worries, but if you need to do the M25 at rushhour, factor in a few extra minutes.

7. Wearing shoes that take ages to take off at security It will save you time, save you getting flustered and save annoying people behind you in the queue, if you wear shoes that are easy to remove prior to being beckoned through the security gates.

8. Joking with airport staff Do not joke with airport staff, it is not funny.

9. Not adhering to the 100ml rule Buy small toiletries, or decant into smaller bottles if taking them in your hand luggage. Otherwise you will have to travel without them.

Rhossili Bay in Swansea has been crowned not only the UK’s number one beach and but third best in Europe beating almost every other beach in Spain, Greece and Italy.

Woolacombe Beach in Devon was named the UK’s second best beach while Cornwall’s Porthminster Beach took third place.

Rhossili Bay is the

largest expanse of white sand on the Gower Peninsula and stretches for three miles. The beach’s vast stretch of sand and towering cliffs make it popular with surfers, paragliders and ramblers. The village of Rhossili is steeped in history and the wreck of the Helvetia, which ran aground on Rhossili Bay in November 1887 can still be seen on the beach today.

By Jav T O Y O T A launched their Recreational Active Vehicle with four-wheel drive - or RAV4, as it is known - in 1994.

In doing so, they created the compact SUV, which now dominates nearly every motor manufacturer’s agenda.

But while the original RAV4 broke new ground, the latest fourth-generation model has its work cut out to take on rivals from Audi to VW - many lots in between.

The Japanese manufacturers have attempted to make the RAV4 stand out, and the new model is pleasing on the eye, as well as being comfortable and extremely spacious.

The styling is sharper.

There’s an aggressive, trapezoidal shape in the front bumper which houses the number plate and air intake.

And the angular headlights look excellent, particularly where the chrome bar from the grille runs into each lamp.

While the previous model shrank into the background, Toyota have attempted to make the new car stand

out in a more crowded marketplace. True, it’s still not quite the headturner they anticipated, but at least it is more distinctive.

The new car is slightly longer and slightly wider, but the more significant increase comes in the wheelbase, which is 100mm longer, at 2,760mm, providing excellent levels of interior space.

The dash is a smart design, although the plastics are hard, despite Toyota’s best efforts to jazz things up with carbon-fibre-effect trim.

New, Clear Blue dash lighting is soothing at

night, as well. while the mid-spec Icon model - predicted to be the top seller has all the kit you need, including auto lights and wipers, sports seats and Toyota’s touchscreen infotainment system.

There’s loads of space in the rear, and even in the middle seat because the floor is flat. And, so neatly, the seats fold flat with a simple tug on a handle on either side of the rear seatbase.

Toyota has ditched the spare wheel to give 100 litres of space below the boot floor, while the 547-litre load-bay is accessed via a top-

hinged tailgate. Until this model, the RAV4 had been hampered in tight parking spaces by a side-hinged design.

There are plenty of hooks for tethering large items, while a cargo net - for oddments weighing up to 10kg hangs from two poles by the retractable boot cover.

The RAV4’s steering, pedals and gearshift are light and slick, while the high-set view out makes low-speed manoeuvring easy.

The soft set-up means a comfortable ride, while Sport mode boosts the handling by moving more of the

engine’s power to the rear axle and upping the steering weight.

The 2.0 D-4D Diesel entry level has frontwheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission, while the 2-litre petrol has 4-wheel drive and a CVT. And the 2.2 D-4D diesel will be mated to both 6-speed manual and automatic, with a choice of either FWD or AWD configurations.

Prices start at £22,595 for the 2.0 D-4D, while the top-of-the-range 2.2 D-4D AWD will cost up to £29,295.

There are three models - Active, Icon and

Invincible. Three trim levels will be available for the Active, with Bluetooth, all-electric windows, AC and 17inch alloy wheels.

The Icon also has power-folding mirrors, auto-dimming rearview mirror, powered tailgate, dual-zone AC, Toyota Touch multi-media, rear-view camera.

With the Invincible, you can add leather upholstery, heated front seats, Smart entry and start, roof-rails and rear-parking sensors.

All in all, it’s a decent buy, especially if you have been a RAV 4 fan for all these years.

This is connected to an EGC automated manual gearbox, which incorporates an electric motor and a battery, taken directly from Peugeot’s endurance racing programmes.

The HYbrid FE will be shown at the Geneva

Show on a large Peugeot stand, which will include 31 cars.

Among them will be the new Peugeot 2008 and a hybrid version of the 2008, which uses the new PSA HYbrid Air compressed air hybrid technology to return a potential 140mpg.

Also on display will be the Onyx concept shown at the Paris Motor Show last year, and more luxurious 208 XY. The new Peugeot 208 GTi (pictured) will also be on display, alongside the firm’s new R5-class rally challenger, the Peugeot 208 T16.

They have faced numerous B teams, and last year finished second in the league to Real Madrid B, or Castilla as they are correctly known.

But these were the first “juniors” to play a competitive game at the Heliodoro - and on the form shown by CDT, they should also be the last.

This was as uncompetitive and one-sided as the League Cup final, which a few hours later

saw Swansea batter Bradford.

While the Welsh got five goals, Tenerife settled for two, but it could have been any score you like. Encouragingly,

both came from setpieces, the first a sweet header from a corner.

Alberto has taken to the first team like the proverbial duck to the pond. The local young-

ster impressed last week, and he was just as composed against Real.

Tarantino may have a battle to get back in at centre-back. Bruno and Alberto have played to-

gether often in the B team, and manager Alvaro Cervera has a tasty dilemma.

Tenerife have lacked a real goal threat from corners since the retire-

ment of Pablo Sicilia, and it was pleasing, finally, to see one go in.

Their cause was greatly helped by the second and third-place sides drawing in Chayofa. It was a fair result, and Treehouse A remain in second over Exiles A for the time being.

The hottest side in the division are Exiles B, and Blair Bear’s boys thumped Treehouse B 10-2.

Bluebell A are also going nicely, accounting for Bar 13 7-5, while James Place will be happy with four points from their two midweek fixtures.

This all bodes well for Tenerife, who are freewheeling towards the end of the season and the dreaded play-offs.

As I wrote here a few weeks back, the other sides seem to have settled on fighting for second place. Tenerife's eight-point lead is too much for Oviedo or Leganes to claw back.

This Sunday, CDT travel to the capital to face Atletico Madrid B, and there will be a real Armada there to cheer the lads on. Hundreds will make the trip, and let’s hope they get a win to celebrate.

Director of Football Quique Medina, who held an informative press conference this week, is trying to get manager Alvaro Cervera to sign a new contract.

“For me, my main success this season has been the signing of Alvaro,” he said. “I think he is a great coach, a great person, very aware of the media as well, great with the kids and that’s what makes a good coach.

“In training we do many, many things, and it’s his drive in all the areas that makes a difference.

“My idea was clear from the beginning, promotion, and the harmony is still very good with

him. I think he’s the best coach I have had at this club.”

Praise indeed. While it seems that Cervera is happy until a contract is signed, there will be speculation.

Medina added: “When you have a good coach, the results, for me, will come. What I endorse is the way he does the job and, if it works, we do not need to experiment.

“I do not think I have to wait too long to get him to renew. He is the coach for Tenerife and he wants to be the coach here.”

Meanwhile, Medina is very happy with the way the season is going: “The goal is to access the play-offs, and come first,” he said.

“A lot can happen, but we are making a record season and what this team are doing is very difficult. It's a dream season - yes, even though it is in Segunda B! “Sometimes the fans can understand that it is not easy. We all want to go in at the break winning 2-0, with magnificent football and with 11 home-grown players

on the field. but it’s very difficult to do this.

“We have incorporated home-grown players, and we will continue to do that, but we do not want to burn them out.

I’m not complaining for a second, but I think everyone should appre-

ciate what this team is doing.”

When asked about the play-offs, Medina spoke confidently about the chances of promotion.

“Of the top teams (in other sections) I’ve seen, I would like to avoid Eibar,” he said.

“I’m happy to play Alaves, Cartagena or Jaen.

Alcoyano would pose a tough test as they have a tight stadium with a small pitch and we play with wingers.

“But I think everyone would want to avoid playing us!”

The dream final is on!

They have both won the top division and the John Lowe Trophy. And now, they will face each other in what promises to be an absolutely cracking 2013 Team Handicap Trophy Final.

Xtreme Sports Bar play Bar 180 A on Friday, 15th March, so clear your diaries!

After I tried to build up their semi-finals as

tough matches, both sides dashed any ideas of that by crushing their opponents with matching 6-1 victories.
