A 42-YEAR-OLD man, José Antonio G.S, has been held by Police after allegedly stabbing to death his in-laws and his own four-year-old son.

Cabildo celebrates Rat catching 100 years of history THE Tenerife Cabildo has launched a new campaign to control the rodent population aiming to “reduce the harmful effects that farming activities cause, and thus increasing the rat populations on the island,” said the island councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, José Joaquín Bethencourt.

This initiative, which has a budget of 42,000 euros, includes the provision of a total of 10,000 kilos of rodenticide product of which already 4,500 kilos has been distributed, while

Tenerife Cabildo celebrates it's 100-year birthday tomorrow (Saturday) with an official ceremony which will involve the current president, Ricardo Melchior, and former Presidents José Segura Clavell and Andres Miranda.

Melchior emphasised the role of the Cabildo of Tenerife, and that “history is the history of the Cabildo of Tenerife.

Sources confirmed to Canarian Weekly that the 42-year-old suspect was taken to Candelaria Hospital, where he had an operation for cuts to his wrist tendons.

However, it is not known whether the wounds were self-inflicted or as a result of a struggle.

Police confirmed that there had been no previous accusations against the detained man. And, at present there is no

motive for the frenzied stabbing. The house is now taped up as a crime scene by Police, who have been investigating what led to this wellliked man allegedly killing his family.

There is conflicting information, but it is thought that the 42 year-old now lived in Armenime, Adeje, with his girlfriend and young son.

The horrendous crime has shocked residents of the quiet, sleepy village of Piedra Hincada, which has a population of just over 1,000.

He was trying to get a local football team together, and he adored his son.”

Dozens of residents crowded on the street on Wednesday evening, stunned by the magnitude of events and unable to absorb such a tragedy.

The local council of Guia de Isora, which held a special meeting yesterday (Thursday), conveyed its support and condolences to the family, especially to “Mónica Mendoza Bello, who lost both her parents and her son yesterday”.

The municipality of Guia de Isora announced that there would be three days of official mourning for the family.

Longer opening hours for North airport TENERIFE North Airport, extension of opening hours – The Tenerife Cabildo has asked AENA to extend the opening times of the popular airport by three hours.

As a result it would generate additional revenue of 60 million euros, an extra 1,700 jobs and increase passenger numbers by more than 250,000 per annum. The new proposed hours of Los Rodeos are 06.30 to 00.30.

CW News In Brief Essex man cleared

A 38-YEAR-OLD Essex man, accused of killing a tourist in Tenerife more than 16 years ago, has been cleared by a jury in Santa Cruz.

Garry Walton, 21, of Waterford, in the Republic of Ireland, drowned during a booze cruise off Playa de Las Americas in November 1996.

Darren Saptead, from Chelmsford, who was brought to trial on the evidence of sisters Katie and Lucy Smethurst, denied a charge of homicide.

The 38-year-old defendant clapped his hands at the verdict, later describing the Spanish justice system as “a joke”.

The jury said in a written verdict: “The sisters changed their story many times between 1996 and today, whereas the defendant has always given the same version since the beginning.”

Mr Sapstead said: “This has cost me a business and nearly 17 years of my life. I spent time in five different Spanish jails after my extradition.”

Drugs ring dismantled

POLICE in three countries, either side of the Atlantic, have dismantled two drug-trafficking networks and arrested 14 people on suspicion of drug trafficking – one in Tenerife. The others took place in Colombia and Panama.

The investigation into smuggling heroin into New York, which culminated in the arrests last weekend, had been ongoing for 16 months. Seven of those held had outstanding extradition orders.

Acapulco – no-go area

THE Spanish Foreign Ministry is warning Spaniards not to travel to Acapulco following the rapes at gunpoint on 4th February of six Spanish women who were holidaying in the Playa Bonfil resort, in the Barra Vieja, which is outside the main tourist area of Acapulco.

The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office have also advised UK travellers to exercise extreme caution outside the main tourist areas.

One Direction for Spain

FIVE of the most popular boys in pop are coming to Spain this summer to whip hoards of fans into a frenzy, the like of which has not been seen since the ‘Fab Four’, The Beatles.

Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry and Louis are playing at Barcelona’s Olympic Stadium on 22nd May 22, and the Palacio de Vistalegre in Madrid two nights later.

The British boys, who started out as famehungry contestants on ITV’s The X Factor, are now one of the biggest acts in the world, having recently cracked America and sold 14 million singles and eight million albums.

Bananas spoiled by heavy storms OVER 3 million kilos of bananas have been spoiled by recent storms in the Canary Islands.

According to the Association of Banana Producer Organisations of the Canary Islands (Asprocan), the storms that hit the islands at the beginning of March have severely damaged the banana crops.

“Around 9,000 plantations have been affected and losses are estimated at over 3 million kilos. Damage has been more severe on infrastructure, especially

on greenhouses,” commented sources from Asprocan.

It is worth noting that last November an even stronger storm

had caused the loss of 10 million kilos. Many plants were lost and a good number of the surviving ones sustained damage to their

roots. However, unlike on previous occasions, “rains did luckily not fall before the wind arrived, so most plants stayed firm on the ground.

There was, however, plenty of damage to the leaves,” Asprocan said.

“The plants were already recovering from November’s damage with the first high temperatures that announce the spring, but these storms have interrupted all positive progress.”

According to Asprocan, the effects of all this will be felt especially in the long term, in the production volumes of December 2013 to March 2014.

Lion-hearted Mac gets a magnificent farewell THE British community lost a real character last week with the passing of Michael John McCormack, known to all as Mac. He was well known for his cheery smile, easy manner and plethora of jokes.

Mac and his wife, Tina, came to Tenerife in the early Nineties along with their sons Aaron and Leon.

They are best known as the musical duo Cormack, who won the Outstanding Contribution award at last year’s TEAs. Mac had a host of business interests, but it was his warm manner and friendly approach for which he will be remembered.

He died last Friday (8th March) aged 62 after a brief illness, and over 200 people crammed into the Adeje church to pay their respects at Wednesday’s funeral.

Mac was also a popular member of Tenerife Sur Lions Club for many years.

But the success of his businesses, and his increasing work load, meant he could no longer attend

the regular monthly meetings.

But he continued with his family to support the club, and the work it does in the community.

It was requested that flowers only should be brought to the service, and the family asked that anyone who wished

to do so could give a donation to Tenerife Sur Lions charity fund.

Norman Goodall, Lions President said, “Mac’s generous friends raised a substantial sum, which will be used to fund the good causes so dear to his heart as we remem-

ber a good Lion, sadly missed. The Lions Club sends to Tina, Aaron, Leon and other family members our condolences. We know that memories of the love and happiness this family shared together will help them through this sad time.”

Jobs’ crunch for millions SPAIN’S disastrous jobless figures continue to rise, and it has been shown that for every job that needs to be filled, there are 107 people out of work.

A survey by AFIASEmpleo, which carried out research based on Ministry of Employment figures, claims that a year on from the Government’s labour reform, economic activity in Spain has not

improved. There are now six million people of working age on the dole and 16.1 million people registered on the Social Security system - employed or self-employed - from a population of nearly 47 million.

However, more than 20 trade fairs are travelling the country offering up to 1,000 jobs abroad.

In addition, Switzerland is seeking foreign doctors because there are not enough medically-qualified

professionals in the country, and Panamá is looking for Spanish engineers.

AFI-ASEmpleo says the jobless total is likely to fall briefly over Easter because of temporary jobs in the tourism industry, but will rise again between April and the start of summer, The number of tribunals for people losing their jobs has risen to 18%, which is up from the 16.21% in 2009.

The 400 strikes in 2012 was around half of those

in the two previous economic crises of 199092 and 1987-88.

On-the-job apprentice and training contracts for young people with few or no qualifications, or qualified but with no work experience, have increased by 22.7% in the last year.

Unemployment rates are now running at the highest since records began in 1996, with an estimated 29,000 losing their jobs between January and February.

What a flying shame!

THERE have been a number of stories this week that have been flight/airport related, which you would expect as we’re an island surrounded by water.

Two of the stories concern costs and, in my opinion, highlight a dreadful imbalance.

Firstly, Tenerife South airport plans to charge passengers one euro for the use of luggage trolleys, in line with some other European airports.

The Spanish airport authority AENA is introducing the measure as part of an initiative to cut costs. Do they not mean they are introducing charges to generate income?

The charge will also be levied at Gran Canaria, but the controlling body has not set a date for the payments, which will be made through machines, to be installed.

Madrid’s Barajas airport will be the first of seven AENA airports to be hit with the new system, following the end of the free half-hour parking, which was scrubbed last October.

Other airports which will charge for the use of trolleys are in Barcelona, Malaga, Mallorca and Alicante.

Bosses at AENA say the new system will apply in the “public area” of the airports only, and that the boarding areas will remain free.

Yes, but when you depart, you have to get your trolley in the public area first!

The controlling group

added that the one-euro fee charge for trolleys was part of the measures put in place to “add value to the company in order to make it sustainable and economically viable, while maintaining the supply of a quality service”.

According to its calculations, the Barajas airport, as an example, now spends 3.7m euros annually on the management and maintenance of luggage trolleys.

That sum will be reduced to 500,000 euros when the new system is put in place, which means an estimated cost savings of 3.2 million euros.

The AENA chiefs say the trolley payment scheme is similar to those operating at several German and Italian airports, and the one in Athens.

Then I read that Spanish politicians, heads of State et al get fed Segovia-style pork, Bilbao-style hake, duck mousse and Iberian pork rump steak.

It means, according to the figures released, that just one airline meal for the President or King of Spain can cost up to 1,000 euros!

A recent report claims the alcohol bill for just one flight per politician or Royal family member exceeds 1,000 euros.

It takes some bottle to launch this message…

IT’S a fun thing that’s been going on for centuries: tossing a bottle into the sea with a message for anyone, anywhere, in the world.

But this particular bottle will have a much bigger impact because it’s said to be the largest ever to set sail, and contains the largest message!

The giant bottle, eight metres long, two metres wide and weighing 2½ tons, was launched

by Norwegian explorer Jarle Andhøy in the San Miguel Marina yesterday (Thursday) after a few test-runs days earlier.

It’s a gimmick, obviously, initiated by Norway’s soft-drink brand Solo, which wants to spread the name further afield.

Sports-car company Koeningseg built the fibre-glass monster, which has navigational lights, plus solar panels, satellite connections and tracking technology.

It even has a 140-litre fresh-water tank with remote-control nozzles,

to clean the lens of a camera which is activated every eight hours to record the epic journey.

Bård Eker, co-owner of Koenigsegg, said: “It just might be the biggest bottle ever made, and probably the most expensive one, too.”

But why launch it in Tenerife? Solo chief Joaquim Sande says: “Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl spent his last days there.

“And Christopher Columbus stopped off in the Canary Islands (El Hierro) on his way to discovering the as-yet unknown Americas.”

Inside the bottle is a container carrying a case of the soft drink and a personal 12sq.m letter for the lucky person who finds it.

The ambitious project took months of preparation and the whole venture can be followed live via Facebook.

“I only hope a tanker won’t run it over on

the first day,” joked 35-year-old Andhøy, who is known for his

controversial travel on his named Berserk.

Green service for new church THE new Cristianos Community Church celebrates its official inaugural service on Sunday, St Patrick’s Day. And there will be an “official” Irish presence because the Pastor and his wife, Adrian and Lorraine McBride, are from Ireland, The couple previously pastored the South Tenerife Christian Fellowship for over five years, until 2010, and Adrian is well known for his dynamic ministry, great sense of humour and community spirit.

They returned to Northern Ireland to become part of the team of Drop Inn Ministries, which is a Christian charity based there, bringing hope, help and healing to people in 18 countries around the world.

Lorraine managed one of Drop Inn’s Charity Shops and visited some of its projects,

while Adrian travelled to many of those countries, including Africa, India, Cambodia, Eastern Europe and the US, teaching in Bible seminaries, pastors’ conferences and ministering in the churches.

They have returned to Tenerife with a wealth of practical experience, and a heart for the thousands who make up the Ex-Pat community living in the South, offering them a place where they can find compassion, comfort and care.

So before you take part in the annual Irish revelries, join them at the Princessa Dacil Hotel on Sunday at 11am to hear what St Patrick really did for Ireland - and how his message still has meaning for Tenerife today.

Accion del Sol’s Educational Programme has focused heavily on the importance of sterilisation and castration to try to raise more awareness regarding the best way to prevent and reduce unwanted litters of puppies.

At the same time, the correct action will also reduce the number of abandoned dogs on our

streets, and we can all share the responsibility by neutering our pets.

Each week, litters of unwanted puppies arrive at the refuge, all of which have been dumped by heartless owners.

The puppies are lucky because they normally find homes quite quickly as they are so cute.

But it’s harder to find homes for the many large refuge dogs. These include 60 podencos, which are extremely hard to rehome but do make really good pets.

Accion del Sol is always looking for people to walk some of the refuge dogs. If you have some spare time and would like to volunteer, please call to make a few animals really happy.

The refuge is situated at the Granadilla Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to the ecological park ITER, by the windmills.

UK law agency to weed out all those school undesirables LAW enforcers in the UK have launched a new police check to help British schools in Spain identify people who are unsuitable to be working with children.

The new International Child Protection Certificate (ICPC) was presented to more than 200 delegates from 60 authorised British schools at the annual two-day conference of the National Association of British Schools in Spain (NABSS) in Seville last week.

The UK national law enforcement agency dedicated to protecting children from abuse - the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) - introduced the new certificate after an unusual discovery.

Officials found that some international schools, charities and other agencies overseas lacked access to the same level of police checks available to organisations in the UK, sometimes enabling sex offenders to gain posi-

tions of trust with children. British Ambassador Giles Paxman attended the NABSS conference and spoke with representatives of the Spanish authorities and several school delegates.

Mr Paxman said: “Schools have a critical role to play in guaranteeing the safety and wellbeing of children.

The new International Child Protection Certificate is an effective tool, designed to reduce the chances of sex offenders gaining access to children. I encourage all schools in Spain to include it as part of their staff recruitment.”

The ICPC was first unveiled at the British Embassy Madrid at an event attended by Spanish Government and law-enforcement representatives.

Spanish officers specialising in tackling child sexual abuse also shared their expertise and experience of combating this crime with staff from CEOP during a two-day law enforcement workshop.

Toughest runners facing uphill task

TENERIFE’S new Vertical Trail run, an ultra-demanding uphill test from Los Gigantes to Santiago del Teide, will be held on Sunday 22nd April.

It is a joint promotion between Tenerife Athletics Federation and Santiago del Teide Town Hall, and is sure to attract a large entry.

There will be two separate races, each with a 10am start: a 10km mountaintrack course from Los Gigantes to the centre of Santiago del Teide

(an immense 930km incline), and a 4km run from Tamaimo plaza to Santiago del Teide (358km).

Shock merger at Telegraph newspapers THE Daily and Sunday Telegraph newspapers are to be merged in a “digital restructure” to provide a seven-day operation.

The move will lead to 80 redundancies, with 14% of editorial jobs being lost from the staff base of 550. But the restructuring process will create 50 digital content roles within six months.

The Daily Telegraph has been published in print form since 1855, while its Sunday stablemate was launched in 1961.

Chief executive Murdoch MacLennan sent a letter to staff on Tuesday outlining the new structure.

“We must move now to complete our transition to a digital business,” he said. ”To do that, we need to invest significantly and I am announcing an £8m investment in our digital future, our No1 priority.”

According to sources,

Mr MacLennan also told workers: “We will have to restructure our editorial operation to produce a root-andbranch change in the way we function.

“To this end, it will be merged into one unified operation, serving digital and print products on a 24/7 basis.”

The British newspaper industry has struggled to maintain print circulation as online products are sought increasingly by news consumers.

Advertising rates have also plummeted in recent months, adding extra pressure at the Telegraph papers to cut overheads.

A source at the Telegraph Group told Sky News: “There is going to be a major change on the editorial floor because of the pressure on print. It is still uncertain who is going to be in the firing line.”

Government slow to help the oldies A NEW report has demanded changes to Britain’s health and social care because the Government is “woefully underprepared” to deal with its ageing population.

And a House of Lords cross-party committee cited figures from the Office for National Statistics, which predict a 50% rise in the number of over-65s and

a doubling in over-85s between 2010-2030.

The committee, though agreeing that longer life is a “gift to be welcomed”, said that unless the Government acts swiftly, it could cause “a series of crises” in society and public services.

The report called on the Government to publish a white paper before the 2015 General Election, setting out how England needs to prepare for an older population.

Lord Filkin, chairman of the Lords Committee on Public Service and Demographic Change, said: “The amazing gift of longer life is to be welcomed.

“But our society and politicians need to

address the implications and the changes needed to attitudes, policies and services, so that people are best able to benefit from it.

“This is not a distant issue; our population is older now and will get more so over the next decade. The public are entitled to an honest conversation about the implications.”

The committee called for two cross-party commissions to be set up to report by 2016 on action to be taken to get ready for an older society.

One would work with employers and financial service providers to improve pensions, savings and equity release schemes.

The other would look

at organisational and funding changes needed in the health and social care system.

The committee said the current NHS and care system was already “failing” older people and was “inappropriate” to deal with the expected large increase in elderly people, of whom a sizeable proportion would have long-term health conditions.

A Government spokesman said: “We already have an ambitious programme in place to understand and better meet the needs of an ageing population.

“We are making radical changes to our pension system to encourage more people to save for their retirement.”

End of track for Vodafone VODAFONE, with both eyes on the digital age, will end its £50m-a-year deal with Formula One team McLaren at the end of he season, which starts on Sunday.

The mobile phone firm, which had previously sponsored Ferrari, has reviewed its marketing strategy and is keen to get involved with the digital side of sponsorship.

Morten Lundal, Vodafone’s group chief commercial officer, said the firm now wanted to market its brand to consumers more directly, through digital interactions and live events.

But the move also

followed last year’s speculation that Vodafone was among sponsors concerned by the sport’s decision to run the Bahrain Grand Prix, despite a violent uprising in the Gulf state.

Vodafone has already left other global sport sponsorship campaigns behind, including longterm deals with the England cricket team, Champions League football and, more recently, sponsorship of the Australian cricket team.

McLaren, which has lost Lewis Hamilton to the Mercedes team, is already searching for a replacement sponsor.

Team principal Martin Whitmarsh said: “We’re immensely proud that, having been set a number of ambitious challenges by Vodafone back in 2007, together we’ve met or exceeded each and every one.

“Our focus is on continuing to drive results for all our partners throughout the 2013 season, and we look forward to making a major title partnership announcement towards the end of the year.”

In their six years to date, McLaren and Vodafone have enjoyed 34 grand prix victories, as well as winning the 2008 drivers’ world title with Hamilton.

Potholes are costing millions IT will cost around £10.5bn to repair every pothole in the roads covering England and Wales.

The countries are facing a “crumbling road crisis” according to a road-survey report by the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA).

Lack of funding for repair work is blamed by the group, with local authorities in England reporting an annual budget shortfall of £829m.

The AIA has determined that one in five local roads is in “poor condition”, which, translated, means they each have five years of life remaining at the most.

But Local Transport Minister Norman Baker said: “We are providing councils with more than £3bn between 2011-2015 to maintain their roads and pavements.

“Last December, we announced an extra £215m to help councils

get the best out of their road network.

“This is on top of the additional £200m we gave councils in March 2011 to repair local roads damaged by the severe winter weather in 2010.”

Try telling that to Rosemarie Dutton, who

broke her leg last month after tripping up on a pothole while crossing the road in Middlewich, Cheshire.

She told Sky News: “I was checking on the lights that they weren’t going to change on me. And before I knew it, I was down on the

floor due to one of the large potholes on the pedestrian crossing.

“Obviously, I was in excruciating pain, and no one came to help me.

I was amazed.”

Four million potholes have been fixed over the last two years, says the Local Government

Association (LGA), which has called on Whitehall to invest money in resurfacing roads. Councillor Peter Box, LGA chairman, said: “Keeping roads safe is one of the most important jobs councils do - and over the past two years, they have fixed almost four million potholes, which amounts to one every 16 seconds.

“Almost half-a-billion pounds is being taken away from us, and our general fund is being reduced by some 30%.

“But something has to give. It’s no good anyone saying, ‘Well, actually, you should be doing this, despite the fact that your budget’s being cut’.”

But the AIA report says the cost to councils of not repairing roads is ever-increasing.

Last year, a total of £32m was paid out in compensation claims to road-users.

Poorly-maintained roads are said to be costing small and me-

dium-sized businesses £5bn a year in reduced productivity, increased fuel consumption, damage to vehicles and delayed deliveries.

Andy Jennings, who runs a taxi firm in Sandbach, has had to spend £400 repairing the suspension on two of his vehicles recently.

He told Sky News: “Obviously we can’t afford to do this at the moment. In times of recession, every penny counts.”

The Transport Minister put the blame squarely on local highway authorities, saying: “It is, ultimately, up to them to determine how they prioritise their funding, but we want to help them get the best value for money.

“That is why we are funding the Highways Maintenance Efficiency Programme, which helps councils work together to deliver a first-class service to their residents and, at the same time, saving money.”

A R G E N T I N A’ S Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected on Wednesday to succeed Pope Benedict XVI as head of the Roman Catholic Church.

He chose the papal name Francis and is first pontiff from the Americas.

He is also the first Spanish-speaking Pope in 510 years and the only non-European pontiff in more than 1,000 years.

No other Spanishspeaking country has had a Pope, and the 76-year-old looked stunned as he waved shyly to the 50,000 people gathered in St. Peter’s Square.

He asked for prayers for himself, and for retired Pope Benedict XVI, whose shock resignation - the first in 600 years - paved the way for the first Jesuit to the papacy.

The cardinal electors overcame deep divisions to select the 266th pontiff in a remarkablyfast conclave.

White smoke poured

from the chimney stack on top of the Sistine Chapel as a cardinal, standing on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica announced: “Habemus Papum” (We have a Pope), and revealed the identity of the new pontiff, using his Latin name.

The archbishop of Buenos Aires has spent nearly his entire career at home in Argentina, overseeing churches and priests.

Judges for the evening were DJ Roscoe, host of the Embrujo Breakfast Show on Oasis Fm, Ian Lennard (musician, vocalist and owner of BangOnTrax), Craig, part of the Harvey’s team, and resident compère Paul.

There were 17 eager singers, queuing up to confirm their registration, and first up was the seasoned Paul, whose rendition of Sting’s Fields of Gold set a high standard for the others.

Next came rock-chick Ellie, who sparked the audience into life with a solid version of the Kings of Leon’s Sex on Fire.

Already, with just two acts gone, it was evident that the bar had been set rather high.

Ashley, the youngest contestant, followed and, despite his tender 14 years, he belted out Michael Bublé’s Cry Me a River with aplomb.

Then came Stacey, who performed the first of two interpretations

with great control. Next it was the turn of Rose Bahar, who wasn’t able to sing his preferred choice, but made a valiant effort at Earth Song.

Luna, a 19-year-old student at the University of La Laguna, followed with a great show, dancing and singing Jessie J’s Nobody’s Perfect. and wasn’t far off!

Craig, the cheekiest chap in the room, was up next, and the performance and voice were worthy of the ovation he received after complet-

ing Adele’s Make You Feel My Love. The competition just got a little tougher.

Keith, a late entrant, was up after Craig and added variety to the evening. He sang PJ Proby’s Somewhere and dedicated it to “The Oldies” in the room.

Another TLK veteran, Laura, then performed a strong version of James Morrison & Nelly Furtado’s Broken Strings after realising that her first choice of song was not available.

The mood lightened somewhat when Adele (no, not that one!) took to the floor and gave her all for the Bee Gees’ Night Fever, even dragging audience member Brian up to dance with her.

Milton Keynes resident Sophie followed and, despite self-confessed nerves, her version of the Alicia Keys track Empire State of Mind was well portrayed.

It was as if the boss had been planning the next moment, as PR Sonya was forced away from her duties to sing Bon Jovi’s Bed of Roses.

What a voice!

Ann Flor was next to perform, with Whitney’s I Will Always Love You, which was well controlled, not to mention in a language which is not her first.

Tenerife resident Sonmy, from Cuba, who chose the Diana Ross ballad When You Tell Me that You Love Me, and received the second ovation of the night for a truly excellent interpretation.

Last up was Asad, who added even more variety to the evening by singing Creed’s With Arms Wide Open, which was pretty much how he was received by the audience. That was that, and the final three selected were Luna, Craig and Sonmy. But such was the closeness of the

scoring that the difference between first and second going into the sing-off was mere hundredths of a point.

Luna went first, and stuck to Jessie J with a lively version of Domino, which had the audience dancing.

Craig changed tactics for the sing-off, and selected Bublé’s Cry Me a River, which brought the entire place to its feet. It was a winning performance by most people’s standards.

But Sonmy then took to the stage and belted out pure emotion as she gave her all with Leona Lewis’s version of the Snow Patrol-penned Run. Thanks to the computerised scoring system, it took barely a minute to put her in top spot, followed by Craig, with Luna third.

If the first heat is anything to go by, it’s going to be one heck of a competition this year!

Companies are peppered with low-salt suggestions THE British Government is asking food companies to lower the levels of salt in items such as sandwiches and chips as part of a new health drive.

The strategy, launched this week by Public Health Minister Anna Soubry, aims to reduce people’s daily salt consumption by 25%, from an average 8.1g to 6g.

New maximum targets will be set for popular dishes, and, said the Department of Health, the catering and takeaway sector should “do more” to reduce salt quantities.

It wants more companies to sign up to the Government’s salt-reduction strategy under the Responsibility Deal.

It follows a 2012 ComRes poll of 1,805 English adults, which showed that more than half the public rarely or never considered the

amount of salt when buying food.

Yet it has been proved that 86% of people are aware that too much salt is bad for their health.

Companies will be asked to change recipes of popular dishes and Ms Soubry said: “The voluntary approach is working and we have already seen results in our everyday foods.

“But to get the greatest impact, we need more companies pledging to reduce salt levels, particularly in the catering and takeaway sector.”

Dr Susan Jebb, who chairs the Responsibility Deal Food Network, said: “It’s essential we

maintain momentum in our efforts to reduce salt in our diet if we are to prevent many thousands of premature deaths each year from stroke and heart disease, linked to eating too much salt.”

And consumer campaign group Which? has called on the Government to “name and shame” companies who do not sign up to new salt targets - and to change the law if voluntary action fails.

Which? executive director Richard Lloyd, said: “The Government needs to establish these new salt reduction targets as soon as possible.”

Britons still backing the Falklands...

THE Falklands referendum, which saw an overwhelming majority of residents voting to stay under British rule, should be honoured by Argentina.

That was the view of David Cameron after all but three people (99.8%) supported the status quo in the ballot to determine whether it should remain a British Overseas Territory.

International observers ratified the poll, in which 92% of eligible voters - or 1,513 people - took part, as “free and fair” And Britain’s Prime Minister warned that Argentina should take “careful note” of the result, which heralded the clearest possible message.

Cameron added: “The Falkland Islands may be thousands of miles away, but they are British through and through. They want to remain British and that view should be respected by everybody, including Argentina.”

Nigel Haywood, governor of the Falkland Islands, added: “You don’t get a much clearer expression of the people’s selfdetermination than such a large turn-out and such a large Yes vote.”

There has been no official response from Argentina, but officials had already dismissed the vote as illegal and

“pointless”. They claim the people have no voice in deciding what is a dispute about sovereignty that should be resolved directly with Britain.

But delighted residents, who sang Land Of Hope And Glory and Rule Britannia after the result, insisted they must be heard.

One woman celebrating in Stanley told Sky News: “It sends such a strong message to the world that we’ve been here for a long time.

“We have the right to determine our own future. How long do you have to live in a country before you’re allowed to call it your own?”

The referendum was organised after a deterioration in relations between Britain and Argentina, which claims the Falklands and which invaded the islands it calls Las Malvinas in 1982.

During the war to take back the islands, 255 British serviceman died as well as 655 Argentines and three locals.

Relations appeared to warm for a period until Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner restated her country’s claims of sovereignty and tried to raise the issue with David Cameron and the UN. Although Buenos Aires dismissed the referendum as illegitimate and refused to talk to Falkland politicians, the

islanders hope other countries in South and Central America will be more sympathetic.

As the counting took place in Stanley Town Hall, it emerged rapidly that the piles of Yes votes were growing steadily, with the No votes nowhere to be seen.

The result was delayed because one vote went missing during the count, but officials eventually ruled out a recount for a single missing ballot.

The result means the Falklands will continue to run its own affairs, but shelter under the wing of the motherland when it comes to defence and foreign policy.

Falklands’ legislators know the referendum will be dismissed by the Argentine Government.

But one of them, Dick Sawle, had this message for President Kirchner: “Listen, this is what we’ve said and it’s time you respected our human rights.

“It’s time you stopped harassing us; it’s time you stopped your very aggressive stance towards us.

“We’ll be taking that message to various governments and saying, ‘look, self-determination is a fundamental human right, and you can’t ignore it’.

“This is what the people of the Falklands have said. Do you have a problem with that?”

Jubilee and Olympics can’t even bolster hotel bookings DESPITE a glorious British year for major events, hotel prices slipped by 4% in 2012 as the year’s dreadful summer weather hit bookings.

A survey by Hotels.com has revealed that guests paid an average of £100 nightly according to the company’s Hotel Price Index, based on the amount paid by those booking through the website.

London rates fell 3% to an average of £126, despite concerns that The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and the Olympic Games would push up prices.

Hotels in St Andrews were the costliest at £135 on average, which was still 12% lower than the town’s £154 rate in 2011. Prices also fell

by more than 10% in Jersey and Perth, and were down by 9% in Scarborough The survey also discovered that, unsurprisingly, 2012’s wet weather affected the number of visitors to the UK, with seaside resorts especially badly hit.

After St Andrews and London, Windsor posted the highest rates last year at £114, but even that was 4% down on the previous year. The

cheapest rooms were in Coventry, where they could be had for an average of £50 per night.

A spokesperson for Hotels.com said that although London’s profile was boosted by the summer events, it did not translate to a rise in prices.

“The number of visitors during the Games did not meet expectations, and hotels lowered their prices in subsequent months to stimulate

demand,” he said.

“This price still placed the capital at No2 in the table, and the city will be one to watch in 2013 to see whether its moment in the global spotlight has an impact.

“Let’s see whether its average hotel prices will be going up, particularly as the royal birth keeps the country in the public eye.”

Although disappointing prices were record-

ed across most of the UK, some areas did buck the trend. The Titanic Centenary helped push room rates up 10% in Belfast, and 9% in Aberdeen, which was boosted by those visiting the city on business in the energy sector.

The research comes as Marriott International reveals plans to launch a budget hotel chain called Moxy, which will feature modern, stylish, hotel rooms.

Arne Sorenson, President and Chief Executive, told Sky News the company planned to “go after” low-cost rivals.

“What we see is a couple of million rooms in the economy space, which have been sort of under-demolished,” he said. “They’re past their prime.

“We think there’s an opportunity to bring something new, with a sense of style, which will perform well in these markets.”

He said Moxy hotels would have better bedrooms and bathrooms than its competitors, despite a room size of around 17 square metres.

“It’s going to be modern and it’s going to be current in terms of its design,” he added.

“And if you bring these things to this space, I feel we ought to perform really well against the hotels already in this segment in Europe.”

Nominated as GQ Magazine’s Comedian of the Week, Paul has a reputation of being a superb writer, who gleefully combines leftfield one-liners with astute, observational comedy.

Paul, who is appearing at Showtime’s Best of the Tenerife Comedy Club next Saturday (23rd March), is an original and hilarious act who always leaves audiences begging for more.

Alongside his solo stand-up, Paul is also half of the double act “Helm and Taylor” (with Nick Helm, who has also appeared at Showtime), who reached the final of the 2009 Laughing Horse

New Act Of The Year competition.

Despite being relatively new to the circuit, Paul is already securing gigs at some of the most respected clubs in the country, notching up stage time at The Comedy Store, Comedy Café, Komedia, The Frog & Bucket, The Stand and many more venues.

In 2009, Paul supported Lucy Porter on her tour. He also MC’d the Laughter Film Awards and travelled to Edinburgh to perform in AAA Stand Up with Bound & Gagged at the Pleasance, He featured, too, as part of a comedy sketch double act with Rebecca Shorrocks, Short and Curly, which had a popular Free Fringe Show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2012.

CW: How, why & when did you start in comedy?

Paul: I started a few years back when I was travelling around Australia and New Zealand.

I did gigs there because no one would know me, and I could be really bad without anyone knowing in the northern hemisphere.

What was your break/ turning point?

I don’t know really. I still don’t think I’ve had my break. But I know I got a lot better once I stopped caring if people liked me. You knob!

Favourite place performed?

These days there are LOADS of great places all over the world, but you want me to say Tenerife, don’t you? It is a lovely gig. I could say Tenerife. Ok, fine.

You’re twisted my arm … Romania!

Did you have an Edinburgh show this year?

If so, what was it all about?

I’m being greedy and doing two. One is a manic show I perform as part of the sketch comedy duo Short & Curly, and the other is an hour of stand-up, which I’m provisionally calling The Greatest Show In The World Ever. It’s going to be about setting unattainable goals for yourself to reach, and failing to succeed.

What’s your aim/goal in comedy?

To sell a big theatre tour, where people come specifically to see me do what I do. But additionally, to do that without

being a massive w***** on the way up. You knob!

Describe your style of comedy in three words.

Three (Oddball) Words.

Name a three-song playlist that sums you up as a person.

Kitty’s Presidents of the United States of America because it seems to sum up how I feel about kitties.

about writing lyrics (or words), sometimes it’s better to just make up something nonsensical, erm … Woo la la!

I own a book I’ve not read called 100 films to see before you die.

I guess I’d probably weigh up finally reading that. Obviously, I’d skip a few pages because I’ve seen ALL the Police Academy films.

Who’s your favourite cartoon character & why?

Wyllie Coyote. In a meta-phorical sense, I feel like I’m him chasing my Road-runner, which is success in comedy.

Every time I do a gig, I’ve bought some new ACME product to help me succeed, and it all crumbles around me. I also like how he defies gravity, then looks down and gravity is restored.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

HypnoTaste What’s the strangest thing you have in your house?

Probably me.

Do you ever dance when there’s no music playing?

Yes, so much so that it now feels weird to dance when there IS music playing. Which I think a lot of men suffer from. If you see a man not dancing in a nightclub and just holding his pint at the side, turn the music off. He’ll do the robot!

Saturday sees Australian Grand Prix Qualifying Highlights on BBC One and main Grand Prix highlights on Sunday all presented by new F1 anchor Suzi Perry.

Sebastian Vettel became the youngest ever three-time world champion when he won last year’s championship by fending off the challenge of Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso. Competition is set to be just as fierce this time round with Lewis Hamilton looking to mount a title challenge from behind the wheel of a Mercedes, whom he joined at the end of last season. His former team-mate at McLaren, Jenson Button, won this race last year.

The BBC will bring all the Formula 1 action, news and interviews throughout the 2013 season across television, radio, online and mobile. This year will see an increased live presence for F1 on network television plus some new faces on the BBC presentation team. Suzi Perry, Allan McNish and Tom Clarkson join BBC this year Extra 40 hours of live network television coverage with practice sessions now live on BBC Two and BBC Two HD on live race weekends

Veteran judge Marcus Wareing is looking for perfection.

Daniel Clifford's main has the same title as Richard Bainbridge's earlier fish course, Tongue in Cheek, but it is a wildly different plate of food. Richard Bainbridge uses a French technique to cook guinea fowl in a beef bladder and calls the dish Which Came First, the Chicken or the Egg, while Will creates a dish of roast longhorn beef rib eye, bread and bone marrow pudding and parsley paste. Comedy writer and star of Citizen Khan Adil Ray joins one of the chefs for a fundraising adventure.

For Ireland’s players it will be a last chance to impress on the international stage ahead of the British and Irish Lions squad being picked later this season for the tour to Australia this summer. Toughest Place To Be A… Farmer BBC2, 21.00 The second programme in the series sees Richard Gibson, a dairy farmer from Devon, travelling to northern Kenya, one of the most arid regions in the world, as he joins the Samburu tribe to live the life of a cattle herder.

Back in Devon, Richard treats his 120 Holstein cows like finely tuned athletes and in return they reward him with an incredible 2 million pints of milk a year.

As no crops grow in northern Kenya, for centuries local tribes have herded cattle, but in recent years more severe and longer droughts have started to threaten the lifestyle of these semi-nomadic herders.

Richard will experience the constant battle for food and water. Most days his host village elder Lemerigichen must dig down into the earth to find water for his cows. It’s exhausting work in the baking heat, yet these herders survive only on a little maize and milk, while some days there’s no food at all.

Richard also learns that as drought pushes tribes closer together in search of ever-dwindling water supplies, they stray onto each other’s territory.

Traditional enemies, they now fight with guns that have come over the border from Sudan and Somalia.

Jimmy’s Ireland ITV1, 20.00 James Nesbitt presents this brand new series on his native country Ireland, famed for its rugged volcanic landscapes, vast lakes, ancient traditions and the unique charm of the locals. Across eight episodes, James embarks on a thrilling adventure through the rich Irish landscape. He explores his homeland and personally guides viewers through Irish life, touching on its culture, history, people and visiting places close to his heart along the way.

Throughout the series James engages with Irish people from all walks of life, as he provides a fresh perspective on iconic landmarks such as the Giant’s Causeway and natural wonders like the Black Cliffs of Moher, as well as less well-known places of interest including the traditional seaweed baths at Strandhill.

In episode one, James heads down to the magical South West of Ireland. He says: “Miles of white sand and crystal clear waters. This stretch of coast was once cited as the most beautiful place on earth

by National Geographic. The water might be a bit chilly, the sun may not always be shining, but the warmth of the Irish people will give you just as good a time.”

In the tiny town of Dingle, James meets American-born brothers Shaun and Kieran Murphy who moved from the New York suburbs 12 years ago with their families to set-up an ice-cream business. Kieran says: “It’s very safe, you’ve got the sea, you’ve got the mountains…There’d be no place we’d rather raise children than here in Dingle.” James gets stuck-in sourcing ingredients for the business and discovers his inner child in the quest for the perfect flavour of ice cream: “Clove Rock was my mother’s favourite sweet and I have very fond memories of Clove Rock. Anything that brings back the memory of my mother and Clove Rock would make me very happy.” With Kieran’s help, ‘Nesbitts and Pieces’ flavoured ice-cream is soon born.

Meanwhile the summer season is well underway at the famous Blarney Castle as thousands of tourists arrive to kiss the Blarney stone and share its myth and legend, thanks to the army of workers who run the estate.

And James meets Justin and Jenny Green and their three children at Ballyvolane house, their country house hotel in the County Cork countryside close to the Blackwater River. Jenny explains: “It’s not really a hotel, it’s much more a home that we have guests in. I think what’s really special for my children, is the fact we live here with their grandfather and their great-grandparents. It’s more common in Ireland and it’s just a lovely way to live.”

Officers from the Central Motorway Police Group target cable thieves, a crime that is costing the country more than a billion pounds each year and causing chaos to Britain's transport system.

Nowadays, when the lights go out on the motorway, it is not just a cost cutting exercise; more often than not, it is because a group of organised metal thieves after the copper cables carrying the electricity to the motorway have struck.

Obsessive compulsive cleaners Channel 4, 20.00

Over half a million of us Brits wash our bed linen just three times a year. Yet there is a group of Britons who wage a constant war on dirt and order.

This series follows Brits who - by their own admission - are so obsessed with cleaning they can’t relax if there is a spot on a tap or a rain mark on the windows. In this final episode more compulsive cleaners will be carefully matched with someone whose home is in dire need of a major spring clean.

In the last of the six-part series James will be going to Nantwich to meet 36-year-old Jodi and her husband Roger. Jodi is originally from Adelaide, Australia. She has two small children aged two and four. She is so busy with the children that she doesn’t get time to clean. There are overflowing toy boxes and the back of the sofa hasn’t been excavated for over a year.

The kitchen is another hotspot. The inside of Jodi’s oven hasn’t been cleaned in the six years she’s lived in the house and the hob hasn’t been cleaned in several months. Jodi dislikes chemicals and cleaning products, especially bleach because they give her migraines, so she has avoided these kinds of jobs and left them to husband Roger. But with Roger tired out from work, he doesn’t do it either.

Kristy is going to Kettering to meet 59-year-old Kay and 60-year-old Dilip who used to run a corner shop from their home. Kay started collecting things after their shop closed. She would take a daily walk for exercise but soon got bored and changed her route to take her past the local charity shops.

Now the collactables have filled the entire shop space and the former snooker room. It’s comprised of bags, videos, dolls, bric-a-brac, furniture and ornaments anything Kay thinks is decorative or beautiful that she can’t bear going to waste or not being appreciated.

It’s not just Kay and Dilip whose outlook changes from the visit as Kirsty also has a revelation about her own cleaning obsession.

As the third heat begins, John Torode demonstrates potato pancakes with smoked trout, horseradish cream and beetroot salad. Without seeing the demonstration, the amateur chefs are given just a few minutes to taste this dish before being asked to write down exactly what is in it, using their sense of smell, and palate. Then they are asked to recreate John's dish in just one hour - without a recipe. At the end of these two challenges, two contestants leave the show. The remaining three are then thrown into a busy lunch time service at London's The Cadogan Hotel and, after just an hour of learning the ropes, the home-cooks must prepare dishes for paying customers. Finally, it is back to the MasterChef kitchen for the final test - cooking their own two courses to impress John and Gregg. The contestants must draw on all their skills and influences to win a place in the quarter-finals.

Kirsty Young, Matthew Amroliwala and Martin Bayfield are joined by detectives from across the UK, appealing for help with some of the UK's biggest unsolved cases.

The programme includes a reconstruction of the tragic deaths of five children and their mother in a house fire in Essex. Dr Sabah Usmani, her sons Muneeb, nine, and Rayyan, six, and daughter Hira, 12, died on 15 October 2012 in Harlow.

A third son, Sohaib, 11, and daughter Maheen, three, died later in hospital. Dr Usmani's husband, Dr Abdul Shakoor, was the only survivor; in his first television interview he speaks to Crimewatch about what happened that night and how he is coping with the loss of his entire family.

Matthew Amroliwala is in Salford investigating the murder of Lee Erdmann, 37, who was shot dead in front of dozens of drinkers in the middle of a busy pub.

The killer stole the pub's CCTV equipment immediately after the shooting and, so far, onlookers have been too frightened to come forward.

This new ITV documentary follows war reporter Terry Lloyd’s daughter Chelsey as she retraces his steps by going to Iraq, where he was killed in 2003, as part of her deeply personal search for the truth about the circumstances of his death.

Marking the tenth anniversary of the incident in the opening days of the Allied invasion of Iraq that resulted in the Terry’s death, Who Killed My Dad? - The Death of Terry Lloyd uses extensive archive footage together with testimony from his ITN colleagues, including Sir Trevor McDonald, to help Chelsey to piece together the final details of her father’s life.

Accompanied by ITV News presenter Mark Austin, who in 2003 was also a reporter covering the start of the Iraq War, and cameraman Daniel Demoustier - who was driving the vehicle carrying Terry when they were initially fired upon - Chelsey returns to the scene of the engagement which led to her father’s death alongside his translator Hussein Osman. The body of fellow cameraman Frederic Nerac, who was in a vehicle following Terry’s 4x4, which also came under fire, has never been discovered.

Chelsey and Mark also visit the United States to meet the commander of the Marines who were involved in the fatal action.

Chelsey explains that at the time of going to Iraq her dad was the happiest he had been for a long time as he relished his assignment on the front line.

But she reveals that she has never been able to fully grieve for her father.

In the documentary, she flies into Kuwait with Mark and Daniel, who explains the danger of the war zone the crew was going into: “Usually you come into a conflict zone, you know the bad guys are there, the good guys are there, they’re defending this bit and it’s going on for weeks and months or years and you know exactly what kind of situation you’re gonna end up [in]. Here we had no clue. Everything could happen. Bad things could happen and it did.”

Mark explains that Terry’s team had crossed the border into Iraq but Mark had not yet. On the night before Terry died, he filed his last report for ITV News and spoke with Mark, who describes their final conversation to Chelsey.

“We managed to get through on a satellite phone and he told me that he had crossed the border and he was pretty pleased about that, and I told him we were this side of the border and he was pretty pleased about that.

That would have been the last time I spoke to your father.”

As Chelsey is driven into Iraq, she explains her conflicting emotions on being in a place that was far from what she had imagined it would be.

At the scene of the firefight, Daniel tells her how the two cars containing him and Terry, Fred Nerac and Hussein Osman were driving along the road in Southern Iraq passing traces of a heavy artillery fight and burned out tanks when they realised they had gone too far, past the tanks of the Allied forces and close to the frontline. When they U-turned an Iraqi pick-up with a gun on the back drove alongside them, and the US tanks then opened fire.

America and Its Guns. The Sandy Hook massacre is now recognised as the most notorious and shocking mass shooting in the USA. Twenty children were killed in cold blood alongside their teachers, in a place that should have meant care and safety, not death and fear. At 3am, most of the karaoke bars have shut up shop for the night.

But Tenerife is still rocking and. depending on your taste, there are a number of places you can visit for some latenight revelry.

The obvious places are Veronicas and the Starco areas of downtown Las Americas, where clubs like Tramps and Rags keep things going until 6am.

These two venues are very popular with diehard tourists who like to party till dawn, as well as with residents and local workers.

Brannigans is within staggering distance, too, if you want latenight/early-morning inter-action with award winning Dj Lee Jackson at the helm.

You’d need to watch Lee every night for a week to get some idea of the amount of variety comedy he packs in to his seven-hour shift.

Lee is always the performer and has many different characters he uses to complement an excellent musical choice. Across the other side of the road on the

Over the years, The Stage Door has always been a meeting place for those who work late into the night and, consequently, a lot of work was gained by the Island’s acts while socialising there.

It was, for some time, known as a musicians’ club and was frequented mainly by people in the

entertainment industry.

For the last five years, Ray has put on live bands and solo musicians from all parts of the globe, making it a truly international bar.

Nowadays, the Stage Door is frequented by a variety of people of all ages, some of whom come just to see the history featured in the venue The walls are covered in photographs of entertainers from the

last 25 years, and the ceiling has gold stars, signed by entertainers who have left the Island.

The Stage Door, steeped in memorabilia, should definitely be on your to-do list because there really is nowhere like it in Tenerife.

The standard of musical ability from the different bands is outstanding, while Julie-Anne is popular with all who visit this little-known venue.

She has worked the bar for over 10 years and is everyone’s friend.

So, lovers of the night, next time somebody says to you: ”Where can we go at 3am?,” you’ll know where to send them - The Stage Door, Tenerife’s worst-kept secret!

Luke’s heading for the top!

THE success of Tenerife youngster Luke Towler has been wonderful to follow.

Luke, who turned 16 recently, has been recording covers and making videos for his YouTube channel.

He has gained an army of followers on Twitter during the last 12 months and over 100,000 views on YouTube, and his fan base extends as far as Australia.

His popularity was highlighted recently when Luke entered an online competition to win the chance to open for Cody

Simpson at the Manchester Opera House on 3rd March.

Almost immediately, the social networks were going mad for Luke as voting began, and he was soon favourite to win - which eventually he did.

The gig was a screaming success, literally. Thousands of young girls even mobbed him after the show and Luke had to be hurried away by security to a waiting car.

There is lots ahead for Luke, and I would like to wish him every success for the future.

Champagne loses its fizz to eBooks!

C H A M PA G N E gets the elbow, but eBooks have arrived in the socalled “baskets of goods and services” used to measure official inflation rates.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS), in its annual review of what should be in-

cluded to calculate the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) and Retail Prices Index (RPI), said: “The eBooks represent a significant and growing market, with recent increases in the number of people reading books digitally.”

Also among the basket goodies are digital TV recorder/receivers, including personal video recorders, which are replacing standard Freeview receiver box-

es. Some of the more odd additions include continental-sliced, deli-type meats and packaged vegetables for stir-fries.

The ONS said white rum, bought from either off-licences or shops, was being included to cover spirits drunk by younger people.

But champagne sold in restaurants and bars was among the goods taken out

of the basket, as the amount drunk continued to fall amid the squeeze on consumerspending.

The round lettuce was also dumped, although it is still covered by iceberg lettuce and prepacked salad.

The CPI and RPI are calculated using 180,000 price quotations every month, covering around 700 goods and services from 150 areas across the UK.

Warning: That electrical product could be deadly!

CONSUMERS in the UK have been warned that countless, potentially deadly electrical appliances are lying around in homes around the country, despite attempts to recall them.

According to the Electrical Safety Council (ESC) charity, one person is killed every seven days by an electrical accident, with 350,000 people injured annually.

And that is partly down to a “shockingly low” response to special

alerts, the average success rate of a product recall being just 10-20%.

With 266 product recalls in the last six years and manufacturers making hundreds of thousands of items, it is thought that millions of dangerous items lurk in the home.

Research by the ESC shows almost two million adults have knowingly ignored a recall notice, and a further one million admit to having an

electrical item which has been recalled.

The researchers also found that many consumers were prepared to jeopardise their safety because it was too inconvenient for them to return a recalled product, or if they couldn’t without luxury items such as TVs or hair-straighteners.

Now, however, the ESC is launching an easy-touse online tool which will allow users to discover quickly whether they own a recalled

electrical product.

Emma Apter, from the charity, said: “The small inconvenience of returning a recalled item is worth it when you consider that faulty products can electrocute or cause a fire.

“We firmly believe there is more that retailers and manufacturers can do to help ensure customers are aware when a product has been recalled, and what to do if they need to return an item.”

John Lewis will offer free returns and collections JOHN LEWIS is to give its customers the choice to return online purchases of clothes, shoes and fashion accessories for free via a network of over 5,000 local convenience stores, newsagents and petrol stations.

The returns option will be offered in partnership with CollectPlus, the largest storebased parcel service in the UK, making it easier and more convenient than ever before for customers to return items.

With over 5,000 stores in the CollectPlus network, all of which are open early until late, seven days a week, customers will be able to return items at a time and place that suits them, as well as accurately track their package every step of the way back to John Lewis.

From early autumn 2013, John Lewis will also trial a ‘Click&Collect+’ service from CollectPlus in Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of South-West England.

This will give customers the ability to pick up their John Lewis online purchases from their local CollectPlus parcel store. The service will cost £3 and will typically take three days to fulfil.

The announcement follows a successful roll-out of John Lewis’ ‘click and collect’ service, to 234 collection points within its department stores, ‘at home’ shops, and Waitrose branches.

Karen Dracou, head of omnichannel development at John Lewis, says: ‘Orders using Click & Collect have nearly doubled over the past year, and accounted for an impressive 35 per cent of online sales over the Christmas period, so we know that customers are looking for ever-more conve-

nient ways of shopping with us. By partnering with CollectPlus, we can extend our existing reach of John Lewis and Waitrose collection points to a wider geographical base, providing an even more convenient way for our customers to shop.’

Neil Ashworth, CEO of CollectPlus, says: "We’ve designed the CollectPlus service to ensure that customers find collecting and returning items as easy and as painless as possible. The extended opening hours associated with all CollectPlus stores allow customers to drop off or return items outside of the traditional trading day.

A recent IMRG Home Delivery report indicates that almost three quarters (72%) of online shoppers would not be willing to travel more than five miles to collect goods ordered online, demonstrating the value of the CollectPlus network as it brings retailers that much closer to their customers.

The clock hands need to be replaced and hopefully this will be completed by May. The Department of Public Utilities, run by Damaso Arteaga, has temporarily dismantled the famous flower structure.

the breaks are caused by vandalism, play activities of children or simple oversight, sometimes leading to the needles bending or forcing the clock machinery.”

Damaso Arteaga continued “The hands have suffered more damage so we have therefore decided to temporarily withdraw it.” They anticipate that “we will provide smaller replacement hands in the May holidays”.

The council said “the first option was a perimeter fence, but it

seemed that the clock, a symbol of this city, would lose its attractiveness, especially as to the identity of the resident’s closeness and visitors.”

For Arteaga, “the primary objective is to continue to operate and maintain the hands so that they mark the minutes and hours.”

Parque García Sanabria is a public urban park in the heart of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in Tenerife.

It was inaugurated in 1926. It is a large garden area, combined with fountains and

architecture. Its name derives from the Mayor Garcia Sanabria, who approved its construction. It is the largest urban park in the Canary Islands. It has an area of 67,230 square metres (723,700 sq ft).

And so, too, are this year’s new looks, which are creeping through.

Last year saw the use of big, bold colouring methods, as vibrant shades were bang-on trend.

However, this year I see things toning down a touch and getting back to basics with clear and definite colours and no mish-mash of shades.

As fashion turns around, then so does hair - and a definite Eighties feel is in the air, with block colouring volume, all introduced with a new 2013 twist.

There’s heavy fringes, with hair falling in a forward direction, smoothness but not obviously straightened, curls but not scrunched - and peek-a-boo, blunt fringes like Debbie Harry, from Blondie, if you remember her, and that far back!

The clue to getting it right is “simple is best” with no fussy haircuts or colours which need hours to keep up to in the salon. So it’s wash, dry, done!

And those who can prove their lifestyles are healthy should be given priority for all nonemergency appointments, operations and treatment, according to a think-tank.

The group also wants patients on benefits to be given extra cash if they take exercise and eat a balanced diet.

A new report this week makes a number of controversial recommendations to encourage the public to take responsibility for their own health.

The authors point out that the current system is unfair because patients who don’t make any attempt to be healthy are more likely to need the scarce NHS resources. hour to style her hair because if the cut’s there and the colour is well done, it should take only minutes.

One suggestion is to allow patients to earn points by going to the gym, or buying certain healthy foods at the supermarket.

These could then be used by doctors to assess whether they deserved priority treatment on the NHS. Another is to reward patients on benefits with cash top-ups if they can prove they have been to the gym, or bought fruit and veg.

The think tank believes the UK Government must take a more radical approach to tackling the obesity epidemic.

A quarter of adults are obese, and this proportion is expected to double by 2050.

Figures also show that the NHS spends an estimated £5.1billion a year

on conditions caused by being overweight or obese, such as diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.

Report author Max Wind-Cowie said: “These proposals are about more than just saving money.

“They are about helping people make informed decisions and take greater personal and collective responsibility an attitude that has become even more salient now that there is less in the coffers.

“Government and the private sector should adopt a pro-active approach to supporting individuals, families and communities into doing the right thing and taking more responsibility.

“It is no longer enough to simply step back and assume people will fill the gap.

“Polling has consistently shown this view strikes a chord with the general public, and these proposals offer some practical idea of how we could see it in action.”

The Government has been criticised for failing to do enough to tackle obesity, with the likes of TV chef Jamie Oliver describing policies as “utterly inadequate”.

Other campaigners have accused ministers of “cosying up” to the food industry by allowing them to set their own rules to limit salt, sugar and fat.

The great dementia struggle

By Val Sainsbury ENGLAND’S health and care system has been accused of “struggling” to look after people with dementia.

The Care Quality Commission says hospitals and care homes are fail-

ing in key areas because the number with the condition rises as people live longer.

The group has found that dementia patients in hospital were more likely to face longer stays, be re-admitted and die there. Meanwhile, care homes are not doing enough to keep patients healthy.

The CQC announced the conclusions after reviewing the 20,000plus inspections it had carried out, as well as looking at existing data.

It discovered that

in 78 out of 151 local NHS areas, people with dementia who lived in care homes were more likely to be admitted to hospital for an avoidable reason than people without the condition.

In 96% of hospital trusts, people with dementia stayed longer than those without the condition. And in 85% of trusts, people with dementia were “significantly more likely” to die in hospital than patients without the terrible condition.

The CQC called for “better identification

of dementia” and comprehensive training for staff.

That’s because the report also found that almost one-third of hospital admissions for people with the condition did not include a record of their dementia, even though it had been identified in the past.

David Behan, CQC chief executive, said: “The people in charge of care homes and hospitals must work better, individually and together, to ensure the right services are in

place.” It is estimated that around one in three people over the age of 65 will develop dementia in his/her lifetime.

Some 800,000 people are said to be suffering the condition right now. That figure is rising because people are living longer, and experts believe it could top one million during the next 10 years.

Alzheimer’s Society chief executive Jeremy Hughes said: “Tolerating inaction on dementia care even a day longer is tantamount to playing

Russian roulette with the lives of people with the condition.”

The UK Government has already made it a priority, backing a national awareness campaign, funding research and providing extra training in places.

Care Services Minister Norman Lamb said: “There is no excuse for delivering poor care.

“By exposing bad practice, and highlighting best practice, we are determined to drive up standards for everyone.”

Keep fit boost for brain power!

LIFE-LONG exercise not only benefits our hearts and waistlines but our brains as well!

Taking part in physical activity four or more times a week from childhood helps improve brain-power in later life by up to one-third, and could help stave off the onset of dementia.

While all adults suffer mental decline with

greater age, scientists have discovered that regular exercise, such as playing sport, jogging, attending the gym or even a brisk walk with the dog, can have a protecting effect on the brain.

More than 9,000 individuals took part in a 40year study from age of 11. Researchers quizzed them on levels of exer-

cise at regular age intervals, and participants also undertook tests of memory, attention and learning.

The study found that those who exercised weekly throughout their lives performed better on tests of memory, learning, attention and reasoning at the age of 50, compared with those who exercised two to

three times a month, or less. Men who undertook physical activity more than four times a week were found to have lost one-third less of their brainpower by the age of 50, compared with their peers who did no exercise, while women benefited from a 25% reduction. Even those who exercised once a week saw a boost, the physical activity helping to slow their mental decline by an average of 10%. Study leader Dr Alex Dregan, from King’s College London, said: “The research shows that any physical activity is beneficial for cognitive function.

“Current guidelines

are for 30 minutes of exercise, five times a week, but the study has found that you do not have to take this much exercise to see benefits. Even those who take part in physical activity once a week still benefit.

“For a man who exercises regularly, the rate of cognitive decline when he reaches 50 is reduced by one-third, while for women it is a quarter.”

He added: “The benefits of regular exercise will continue after an individual reaches 50. The results also suggest that regular physical activity could help delay dementia.”

Government guide-

lines say that adults aged 19 to 64 should exercise for at least 150 minutes per week, the equivalent of five halfan-hour sessions.

Dr Dregan, whose findings were published in the Psychological Medicine journal, added: “It is widely acknowledged that a healthy body equals a healthy mind.

“However, not everyone is willing or able to take part in the recommended 150 minutes of physical activity per week.

“For these people, any level of physical activity may benefit their cognitive well-being in the long-term, and this is something that needs to be explored further.

“Setting lower exercise targets at the beginning and gradually increasing their frequency and intensity could be a more effective method for improving levels of exercise within the wider population.”

black pepper 1 tbsp chopped thyme 2 tbsp chopped parsley 10 cloves of garlic, crushed and grated 425ml/15fl oz red wine 425ml/15fl oz chicken or beef stock For the roux 50g/2oz butter 50g/1žoz flour champ, to serve Preparation method

Brown the beef and bacon in the olive oil in a hot casserole or heavy saucepan.

Remove the meat and toss in the onions, mushrooms and carrots, one ingredient at a time, seasoning each time.

Place these back in the casserole, along with the herbs and garlic.

Cover with red wine and

stock and simmer for one hour or until the meat and vegetables are cooked.

To make the roux, in a separate pan melt the butter, add the flour and cook for two minutes.

When the stew is cooked, remove the meat and vegetables.

Bring the remaining liquid to the boil and add one tbsp of roux.

Whisk the mixture until the roux is broken up and the juices have thickened, allowing to boil. Replace the meat and vegetables, and taste for seasoning.

Sprinkle with chopped parsley and serve with champ.

Where is your favourite seat?

AIR travel has changed forever.

Now you can book your seat on most aircraft.

But which seat is best?

A recent poll of airline passengers questioned respondents on their seat preferences (aside from extra legroom seats) including which section and whether they chose window, middle or aisle seats.

The poll also delved deeper to find out if choices were influenced by lucky numbers as well as odd or even row numbers.

By combining these

responses, it can be revealed that the most sought after seat on a standard aircraft is seat 6A. This survey supports previous studies which have found that the front six rows of the plane are the most popular, taking 45% of the votes.

Perhaps more surprising was the number of passengers who prefer the window seat – almost 60% - compared to just 40% who opt for the aisle, with less than 1% choosing the middle seat.

The ‘worst’ seat?

At the other end of the scale, the survey found that the seat noone wanted was 31E,

a middle seat towards the back of the aircraft.

Skyscanner’s Travel Editor, Sam Baldwin comments, “There is always a great rush to get on board and get that favoured seat and I think it is really interesting that there are so many differing opinions on this.

“Anecdotally some passengers seem to opt for the middle section near the wings where they are less likely to feel turbulence while others want to be near the front for ease of getting off the plane, less engine noise or even to get a better choice of food available.

TRAVEL INSURANCE - Spot the get-out clauses TRAVEL insurance had the highest claims rejection rate and lowest satisfaction rate out of all the insurance products.

Which? asked members why their claims were being rejected and found the most frequent reasons they were given for being turned down were not being covered if they cancelled a holiday because a relative was ill, they hadn’t reported a loss or theft to police within 24 hours and lost or stolen belongings were not supervised to the insurers’ satisfaction.

They looked at the details of the small print of ten big insurers’ policies to highlight the clauses people should look out for – this included insurers asking travellers to declare pre-existing conditions for relatives, including

those as distant as a cousin. We think this is unreasonable and advise people to look for policies that restrict this exclusion to relatives’ conditions of which they are aware.

They thought asking for loss or thefts to be reported within 24 hours to police was not always possible.

Look for policies that don’t put a time limit on when you have to report the incident to the police.

A Which? spokesperson said: “Travel insurance policies can be complicated, so it’s no surprise that people can be confused by the small print. We advise people read through the policy document before signing anything. If you have a claim rejected, the financial ombudsman can take up your case if an appeal with the insurer fails.”

Easter escapes CURRENCY concerns aren’t deterring British holidaymakers this Easter. Despite sterling reaching a 16-month low against the Euro last week, meaning in-resort costs will be higher than last year, leading cheap flight specialists Skyscanner, reveals that Europe is still the number one choice.

Spain is set to be the most popular destination this Easter, with euro hotspots France and Italy close behind.

Similarly, despite the pound falling to its lowest level against the dollar for nearly three years, flight searches to

the US are up by 27%, making it the second most popular holiday destination this Easter.

With 1.5m holidaymakers expected to jet out of the country this Easter, other destinations in the top five most popular this Easter include European hot spots; France, Italy and Turkey.

The findings are backed up by a Skyscanner survey which found that 58% of travellers said they would find a way to get away this year, regardless of their financial situation, while 40% of families plan to spend more this year on their holidays.

Skyscanner expects 29 March to be the most popular date of travel this Easter, with London airports expected to be the busiest, as hoards of families pack up and jet off to enjoy a much needed break.

For those yet to book their Easter getaway, Skyscanner data shows good availability for flights to many destinations in Spain, with return flights available for less than £150.

Skyscanner’s Victoria Bailie commented, “It’s interesting to see that the wider economic issues are having little impact on British holi-

day choices, suggesting that destination comes first and cost second.

Our data shows that British families are as determined as ever to jet off to their favourite destinations, rather than seeking out cheaper alternatives where their pounds will stretch further.”

By Jav RENAULT unveiled their Captur small crossover at the Geneva Motor Show last week, and what a smart little machine it is, too!

Two-tone paintwork will be offered, along with external graphic packs and interior décor options. Eight Zip Collection seat covers will be available, and there are six interior accent colours from which to choose.

Elsewhere in the cabin, it features a rear benchseat which can slide 160mm to allow boot capacity, or to increase rear leg-room.

The French company are also introducing their Easy Life glovebox to the model, which is capable of holding 11 litres and easily accessible by the driver.

Laruens van den Acker, Renault’s design chief, said: “Renault haven’t always been about being first, but we have been about being the first to bring products to the mainstream.

“We can do that with the Captur, which puts us at the heart of the B-sized crossover market. It’s a goodlooking car which also has impressive interior space.

“There is room for personalisation, to make it trendy, and also a side of it that appeals to common sense.

“Almost 60% of Clio sales are personalised in some ways - not always in a major way, but with a few stickers or something small - and we expect that to grow with the Captur.”

Standard equipment on every model includes Bluetooth, USB connectivity and a removable boot floor.

The Renault R-Link infotainment system, recently introduced on the Clio, will also be an option.

The Captur will be initially offered with three engine choices. A 1.2-litre TCe petrol is available with 89 or 118bhp, the latter with a dualclutch EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) transmission only. The 88bhp diesel emits 95g/km of CO2

when equipped with a manual. Under-pinned by the latest Clio platform, with wider tracks and a longer wheelbase, Renault promise “responsive handling, among the very best in the class” for the Captur.

It also features a wealth

of safety kit. The usual complement of airbags and Isofix seat-mountings is joined by antiwhiplash head restraints and impact detection pressure sensors.

Driver aids include Electronic Stability Control with Roll Move-

ment Intervention. Renault have yet to release prices, or even a showroom date for sales. But, given the Clio underpinnings and similar engine technology, it could start as low as around £12,000.

However, it might be

worth allowing another two grand to enjoy a really good spec.

The Captur should be in Europe and the UK before the end of 2013 and, at that kind of price, expect to see plenty around next year!

Three-door Leon really is a good sport THIS new Seat Leon SC is all set to go on sale, even though the makers say it is merely a pre-production prototype.

It’s the Spanish company’s first three-door Leon, and, in certain aspects, is a rival to the Volkswagen Scirocco.

That, perhaps, is no coincidence because Seat is now a wholly-owned subsidiary company of the German manufacturers.

Yet Seat have demonstrated the confidence to go their own way within the VW Group structure, executing their own interpretation of a theme with impressive confidence.

The SC, which stands for Sports Coupé, is

shorter and wider than the five-door and, more significantly for its dynamic capabilities, the wheelbase is 35mm shorter.

It is also just 13mm lower on the outside, although a sharplyraked rear screen, plus the prominent side

creases carried from the five-door, take care of the sporty look.

It also has just enough rear-seat space for two adults, plus the same 380-litre boot space as the five-door.

Inside, the cabin delivers on the VW Group promise of

understated quality.

Some may find it dull, but materials and ease of use of the switchgear are of commendable quality.

The 138bhp turbocharged 1.4-litre engine is smooth and packed with mid-range pull, delivering both perky

performance and decent, real-world fuel economy.

Seat are keeping back the official figures for now but, based on the five-door’s stats, a 0-62mph time of around 8.1sec is expected, paired with official combined economy of more than 50mpg.

The manual gearbox has a slick action and the ratios are sensibly spaced. It all combines promisingly with accurate steering, which goes from being a touch too light around town to weighting up reassuringly with speed.

The Leon’s steering has been tinkered with to give the SC a more sporty feel, and, overall, it promises to be a successful model.

Combined with its short wheelbase, wide

tracks and low centre of gravity, the SC is a joy to drive swiftly through the bends, even with an old-fashioned torsion beam at the back.

Surprisingly, this sporty set-up doesn’t appear to come at the expense of ride comfort, although our test route was over predominantly smooth Spanish roads.

Like their five-door model, Seat appear to have pulled off a set-up which is both sporty and comfortable enough for everyday driving.

The sensible conclusion to be drawn is that this is a classy machine, certainly on a par with the five-door.

Despite being two doors light, however, the SC will probably cost around the same as its big brother, coming in at about £18,000.

Lowly Guijuelo shock Tenerife

IT’S Cheltenham Festival week and today (Friday), the Gold Cup should be won by Bob’s Worth.

This is a hard race, over a long distance, with lots of obstacles to be negotiated and a fearsome run-in.

Only the strong triumph and, sometimes, the race can suddenly change on the charge for home.

Sunday’s shock defeat against Guijuelo made it consecutive losses for CD Tenerife and left some fans thinking that the last few furlongs will find the team out. They are certainly rattling at the moment.

This first home setback of the season was a stunner. One up after 30 minutes, thanks to an own-goal from Manolin, Tenerife were expected to kick on and go through the gears.

But it never happened and they were made to pay for their complacency. Jamie Moreno's brilliant equaliser on the stroke of half-time should have been a wake-up call.

Instead of tearing at the visitors, though, Tenerife ambled in the belief that the goal would come somehow. It did, just in the wrong net.

Valero’s strike, 20 minutes from time, stunned the Heliodoro faithful, and you could have heard a pin drop. In fact, you could hear the Guijuelo bench celebrating.

Even so, Tenerife should still have come away with something.

They have the players, the talent, the manager - yet it never looked like happening.

A couple of key players were missing, and Aridane and Tarrantino will return this weekend. It’s also clear that Chechu needs to be giv-

en his head, as they say in the racing world.

He needs to start and be given a run. And something seems to be wrong with Suso at the moment.

But this is no crisis.

As has been the case all season, Tenerife were not really punished for the slip-up. Secondplace Leganes were held to a goalless draw at Sporting B, while third-place Real Oviedo fired their manager after twice tossing away a lead against 10-man Caudal.

So while the gap is down to five points, there are now just 10 games to go. And this weekend, the rivals all face each other. Leganes host Real Oviedo, while fourth-place Fuenlabrada travel to Caudal, who are fifth.

Tenerife travel to midtable Aviles, who were early pace-setters. They were second when they pitched up in Santa Cruz in October and, though the 1-0 scoreline suggests the match was close, it was anything but.

Tenerife were value for more than just Aridane’s goal, and Aviles

have dropped like a stone since.

They have won only twice at home since mid-November, and Real Madrid C beat them 4-0 on their own turf a few weeks ago.

It’s the start of a crucial few weeks for Tenerife, who are also away next weekend. That winnable trip to Getafe B is followed by the visit of Coruxo.

Marino de Luanco are next, and then a home match with Sporting B before the massive trip to Real Oviedo on 21st April.

Three wins and two draws before Oviedo is perfectly acceptable and a realistic target.

Meanwhile, CD Marino completed their first double of the season as they won 1-0 at nearest rivals Alcala.

They have now lost only one of their last four games, but it’s a case of far too little, far too late.

This Sunday they host Salamanca and there is no reason to think they cannot keep their minirun going.

Salamanca are a frustrating side with what, on paper, looks a decent

side. But their ongoing money problems seem to have sucked the fight out of the team, and they will need to improve if they are to make the play-offs.

Finally this week, this column’s tips in Segunda division are looking good. Elche are running away at the top and are Segunda B

up in all but name.

Much as I hate to say this, Las Palmas are also going very well. I tipped them here at 9/1 for promotion and, as things stand, they are in the play-off places.

Noisy Peacocks ruffle Hammers feathers THERE was a lot of noise coming out of Palms Bar on Tuesday night - and most of it was from the Puerto Colon chaps, The Peacocks.

They were in fine spirits as they dispatched Tenerife Hammers C 8-4 to rack up back-toback wins and climb out of the bottom three. And they were good value for it as all the team chipped in.

Meanwhile, on table one, Tenerife Hammers A were beating Palms A for the fourth time this season. But the 10-2 scoreline didn’t reflect the match, which saw every frame wellcontested.

League leaders Gaffers A were given an early scare by Terrace A. They were 2-0 and then 3-2 down with

Ashley twice getting chinned by Conrad.

But they dug deep and came through 8-4 with a bit to spare Inn The Pink A got back to winning ways at the expense of Dreamers, for whom captain Tommy won all three matches. Terry won the deciding frame to give Pink the spoils 7-5.

Phoenix Knights were always in control at Terrace B. They raced into a 6-0 lead, before Richie and Chris won a few frames to give the 7-5scoreline a respectable look.

In Division Two, revenge was in the air in the Bluebell derby. The B team had earned bragging rights in the Tenerife Pool Tables Plate a few weeks back, but the A team were not having that!

In another watertight contest, they clinched the crucial victory to

maintain their promotion charge. They are now just three points off second spot.

Exiles A, who also have their eye on that position, won again - this time at league newbies Shorty’s.

Next Door moved another victory closer to the title as they dispatched Ryans Bar, while James Place got back on track with a vi-

tal win at Exiles B. Treehouse A kept their good run of form going, beating Palms B 7-5, while Gaffers B made it three on the spin at Toscales B to remain unbeaten since the first week in December.

It’s cup week and we have reached the quarter-final stage.

His team rounded of another season with a hard-fought draw against La Central, captain Mike Telfer checking out on 140.

The other Premier League tie saw The Pub thump Target Army, 7-1.

With nothing else to be decided in Division

1, it seems as though some players had their thoughts on high check-outs.

The record had stood at 145 for most of the season, but this was broken twice over the weekend!

Rood’s Joeri, who took out a 150 during a 5-3 win over the Playboys, had his eyes set on a nice bit of silverware. But Ourplace Naturals had other ideas.
