Easter Extraordinary True Passion on and so unique the Island THE President of the Government reiterated that the problem in the Cypriot banking sector is different to that in any other country of the European Union and that the decision taken to resolve the situation is extraordinary and only being applied to Cyprus.

Furthermore, he insisted that Europe must continue moving forward on its process of banking union.

The President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, met in Paris with the French President, François Hollande. The two leaders discussed the agreement reached on Cyprus and the current situation in the Eurozone.

At the joint press conference held by the two leaders after their meeting, Mariano Rajoy announced that Spain will argue for approval in June of the system for European recapitalisation of

financial institutions and in December of a deposit guarantee system and a single resolution mechanism.

In his opinion, many of the current problems could have been avoided if there had already been banking union in Europe and he believes that the steps to achieve that goal must be taken “with determination, with conviction and with courage”.

The President of the Government said that the agreement reached on Cyprus “seems good” to Spain. In his opinion, it is highly important for there to be a programme to help

the Cypriot economy move forward and for deposits under 100,000 euros to be respected.

Mariano Rajoy offered a message of confidence because he believes that “the problem in the Cypriot banking sector is different to that in any other country of the European Union and that is why the decision taken to resolve the situation is extraordinary and unique and being applied extraordinarily and only to Cyprus”.

Furthermore, he said he disagrees with using the deposits of citizens to recapitalise the banks. “I think that

bank recapitalisation plans must be undertaken using the EMS [European Stability Mechanism].

I will not be in favour of a directive that states the recapitalisation plans for these institutions should be undertaken using the deposits held by the people. I will defend that position when the time comes”.

At their third bilateral meeting, the two leaders emphasised the “excellent relations” that exist between the two countries.

The President of the Government of Spain announced that a bilateral summit will be held in the autumn, “thus returning to the annual cycle that was lost in recent years”.

After their meeting at the Élysée Palace, the two leaders travelled to the Stade de France in Saint-Denis where a European Qualify match for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil was played between the national teams of France and Spain.

Passion Play is to take part, and many of the “actors” will have enlisted at the Town Hall in recent weeks.

Adeje Council’s Department of Culture has made substantial changes to the traditional representation of the Passion of Jesus Christ.

This time, the Last Supper scene will be held in the Plaza de la Cruz del Llano and the Crucifixion will take place in the Plaza Espana.

It means, therefore, that the Calvary of Christ with the Cross will be taking advantage of the Calle Grande adeje slope, which is said to be a more realistic perspective of the scene, as told in the sacred texts.

Culture Councillor Nayra Medina Bethencourt said: “The reformed Plaza Espana offers a superb setting for the final scene, with the Barranco del Infierno as a backdrop, and has great capacity to accommodate the thousands of people gathered there.”

Throughout March, the team of planners have been working

on the town’s Passion preparations, concerning props, costumes, script, sets, music and more.

Because of all the changes, all those taking part have had to attend rehearsals since Monday on the Calle Grande.

Cllr Bethencourt added: “The Passion Play is an important event in our town, and is a great showcase for tourism promotion and projection – and it offers something really different for our visitors.”

Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga said: “In addition to all the residents taking part, we must also mention the contributions of other people from different points of the Island.

“From the north or any part, they decide year after year, to participate in this event, which is usually attended by over 20,000 people.”

The Culture Councillor summed up the occassion, saying: “This representation of The Passion is more than just a play. It is a meeting point for residents of Adeje each year.”

BE extra careful if you are dropping friends or family at Tenerife South Airport.

There have been many confirmed reports of drivers being stopped by police and accused of running an illegal taxi, when they were simply seeing off relatives.

Guardia Civil take your details and issue a 150euro fine and you are then left to prove your innocence. In one case in point, the driver was stopped at the roundabout on the exit from the airport, nowhere near the set-down point, so the Guardia Civil had no information as to who was in the vehicle. When challenged, the police officer just said he would have to make a claim but, needless to say, he did not sign the denuncia.

So you have been warned. There is an element of guilty-until-proven-innocent around at the moment.

21 seized for child porn

GUARDIA CIVIL have arrested 21 people and charged 11 others for possession and distribution of child pornography, in three operations.

They were carried out in 19 provinces across Spain, which included Tenerife capital Santa Cruz, where two people were held. The group were alleged to be sharing computer files.

A WOMAN has died after being hit by a tram in La Laguna. The line 1 tram was travelling towards Santa Cruz on Wednesday morning when the incident took place.

Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, and it is thought that she committed suicide. It was the first fatality since the Tenerife tram service began.

A 40-YEAR-OLD male paraglider was injured on Wednesday in the Barranco de las Torres area of Adeje.

Emergency services were called just before 11.30am and the paraglider was transferred to the South Hospital, suffering from minor injuries.

600kgs of hashish captured

TEN male members of a ship’s crew have been detained in Tenerife following the discovery of 600 kilos of hashish.

The Guardia Civil intercepted them in front of the lighthouse in Punta de Hidalgo, in the North.

Spanish car-workers’ lift

THERE was good employment news for Spanish car-workers this week when French manufacturers Renault announced the creation of at least 700 new jobs.

Six hundred jobs will be at its Valladolid factory in Spain, where most of the jobs will form part of a second shift for the production of its new Capture model. A further 100 workers will also be hired at its Seville plant.

PARALYMPIAN superstar Oscar Pistorius, charged with murdering his girlfriend, could yet compete in Moscow’s World Athletics Championships this summer.

The 26-year-old has won an appeal over his bail restrictions, enabling him to leave South Africa to take part in international competitions abroad.

But there are certain conditions.

He must provide the authorities with his travel plans at least a week before he leaves the country. And he must also return his passport to the court within 24 hours of returning to South Africa.

court on 4th June. His trial is likely to take place before the end of the year.

The Johannesburgborn athlete, known as the Blade Runner because of the carbonfibre blades he uses on the track, made history in 2012 when he became the first amputee to compete in the London Olympics.

In the Paralympics, he won two golds - in his speciality 400m event and the 4x400m relay.

Both his legs were amputated below the knee just before his first birthday because of a congenital condition.

Last year, Time Magazine named him among the world’s 100 most-influential people.

Paco’s mattress safe keeps savings close to your heart FRANCISCO ‘Paco’ Santos, who lost his job in 2009, can now sleep easily at night – thanks to his remarkable, money-making invention.

The Argentine, who worked in the mattress business for 14 years before losing his job in 2009 and has been unemployed ever since, has designed a “mattress safe”, coinciding with the financial crisis in Cyprus.

And it’s the perfect, undetectable place to store your money, especially if the taxman comes after it.

My Mattress Safe was released by Paco’s new company Descanso Santos Sueños (DESS) three weeks ago and

sells for about £738 (872 euros). Already, sales are going better than expected, and with fears that people throughout the EU could have their savings taxed, in the light of the Cyprus crisis, Mr Santos could be rolling in it before long.

One promotional video on the company’s website, set to upbeat, jazzy music, shows the ins and outs of production.

The mattress is made with “the best materials”, and implanted at the foot of the bed is a digitalentry safety box.

In the video, Mr. Santos parodies a bank commercial, calling My Mattress Safe a “financial institution” with a new, imaginative take on saving.

Not to fear, he says, this approach to savings doesn’t come

with the threat of bankruptcy, mergers, or market fluctuations.

And that could prove to be a powerful selling point.

There might well be a larger audience for a Mattress Safe than one might expect.

In his native Argentina, for example, many keep their US dollars (a popular currency because of high rates of inflation) out of local banks after “harsh lessons” learned from past economic crises.

“I know that the dollars in my box are actually there,” says Paco. “If you have a bank account in dollars, your money doesn’t exist – it’s just virtual money.”

Red bus anniversary

THE Santa Cruz red sightseeing bus has just celebrated its second anniversary.

More than 145,000 travellers have used it since 2011, the service provided by the concession City Sightseeing.

The number of tourists using the service has increased over time, with 61,275 passengers in 2011, a year later 78,298, while so far this year the figure has

already reached the 5,000 tourists.

This initiative is a continuation of the actions carried out by the Spanish multinational in the “city tours” to boost tourism in Santa Cruz, which includes a transfer ticket to Las Teresitas, free entrance to the Marine Park and discounts to museums and other attractions.

Ryanair – but it’s good news AT times the budget airline Ryanair get a bit of bad press, from me included, but, as the saying goes, no publicity is bad publicity.

So when I read in the Spanish press that they’re offering cheap flights from the Archipelago to Spain, you can imagine I was slightly sceptical as I can never find a cheap deal.

There’s nothing on their website to draw your attention to the flights so I just put in a random flight date in June and WOW, there it is.

So should I try again just in case it’s a fluke?

I did and it’s not, I tried another random longweekend date in May, Thursday to Tuesday and the return fare is 28.99 euros, including fees but excluding baggage.

The 50% discount flights are on offer to celebrate the summer schedule in the Canary Islands. The flights are only available for the months of May and June.

There is a whole host of flights available from the islands to mainland Spain e.g. from Gran Canaria to Madrid, Seville and Valencia, from Fuerteventura to Madrid and Barcelona, Lanzarote to Madrid and Seville, or Tenerife to Madrid.

available to residents on Ryanair’s website from now until midnight on April 4th.

Enjoy Easter outdoors THE leisure areas managed by the Cabildo will be open throughout the Easter period on the island.

Hundreds of people use these facilities on a daily basis. The Minister of the Environment, Ana Lupe Mora, explained that the management of these facilities, aims to “achieve a balance between conservation of our environment and the enjoyment of the citizens.”

Among the areas are forest trails, camping areas or recreational areas. Most of these facilities are located within

protected natural areas, sanctuaries with countless authentic species, in habitats and unique landscapes. The network of trails are the most popular, with three types of routes: the long-distance (GR), the short route (PR) and local (SL). With trails it’s always recommended to plan your route and check the weather alerts.

But there are many more facilities which the council makes available to the public, such as recreation areas, camping areas. To regulate their use and make it enjoyable for all users, there are a number of rules and procedures to be

followed. Some of these procedures can be verified entirely electronically through e-Government, such as the authorization for the use of camping areas or motor vehicles for forest roads. For recreational areas the guidelines have been established to improve coexistence, security and nature conservation, you’re not allowed to use stereos, PA or power, not to use portable barbecues, use cylinders of three kilos or less and always on the table, no bicycle riding, horse or motor vehicles in places where permitted, use the BBQ with wood and charcoal and never after 20:00 hours,

keep pets tied up. Other standards are aimed at the conservation of nature and of the facilities themselves, such as depositing rubbish in containers and not to throw cigarette butts, do not use detergent to wash the dishes at water points, so as not to damage plants or animals.

Failure to adhere to the guidelines may involve penalties of between 100 and 1500 euros.

El Hierro ‘still safe’ despite a new series of earthquakes EL HIERRO residents have been reassured that they do not appear` to be in danger following Monday’s new earthquake, which measured 4.1 on the Richter scale.

The strongest earthquake yet, recorded on Wednesday afternoon at 4.6 at a depth of 19km, apparently, gave no

cause for concern. And neither did another of 4.1 yesterday (Thursday) morning, which occurred amid a series of quakes, some up to 3.0.

The Official College of Geologists (ICOG) does not believe the island’s inhabitants are likely to be in danger.

Hundreds of earthquakes have been re-

corded since last Friday, although few were strong enough to be felt.

A fault line below the island has been active since the summer of 2011, when an underwater volcano off the coast of La Restinga erupted for several weeks and over 8,000 earthquakes - most registering less than 3.5 on the Richter scale - were recorded.

The ICOG says the hypocentres of the quakes are rising, and currently sit at between 13 and 17 kilometres below the surface. If they get much higher, the risk of volcanic eruption will be greater.

But even this should not lead to a state of emergency since the

volcano, still emitting gases but not actively erupting, is between 10 and 13 kilometres away from the coast, with the activity just one kilometre beneath the surface.

All that is necessary right now is to ensure that the Los Roquillos tunnel is kept under scrutiny because of the risk of rockfalls at the entrance and exit, as well as the cliffs on the north of the island between La Frontera and Sabinosa.

Residents are advised to check their homes for possible structural damage and carry out any necessary repairs to avoid further problems if the quakes continue.

Wildlife centre gets High-flying first Spring orphans hazard hint for drivers!

TAHONILLA wildlife centre, operated by the Tenerife Cabildo has begun to receive the first orphan birds of Spring.

Every year they are tasked with collecting spring baby birds that have fallen from nests or have lost their parents.

The Minister of Environment, Ana Lupe Mora explained that normally the birds that occupy the daycare centre are the offspring of kestrels and owls, but this year the first residents have been a breeding Curlew and a moorhen, two species that live in totally different habitats.

The Curlew, also known as “pedroluis” is a roadrunner. They inhabit the arid south and run more than fly, this particular bird was

rescued from Valle San Lorenzo.

The breeding Moorhen normally lives in ponds and wetlands on the island and was found in Bajamar. Both

are in perfect condition, they are growing well and will be released as soon as they are old enough to survive in the wild. The Centre for Wildlife Recovery

can be contacted on 922 44 57 77 or the local emergency number 112. It is very important to provide the exact location of the collection.

DRIVERS tempted to break the speed limits over the Easter holiday will be clobbered by spy-in-the-sky tactics by road chiefs.

Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) is keeping a critical eye on them via helicopters, armed with speed cameras, above the busiest roads. Pegasus, the first helicopter to be launched, takes three images in a split-second, monitoring the law-breakers on film.

These, and the relative fines, will then be posted on to the offenders.

The flying radar costs about as much as a traditional speed camera - 60,000-170,000 euros but it is obviously more effective because it covers a much wider area.

From a height of 300 metres (about 900 feet), it can detect vehicles moving at up to 360kph.

And because it is so far

from the ground, cars with in-built speedcamera detectors cannot pick up its signal.

The traffic authority says: “It will catch anyone breaking the speed limit, but those complying with the law do not have to worry.”

Conventional speed cameras tend to be set up on major highways, but Pegasus will concentrate on roads without central reservations and where it is more difficult to install cameras.

That makes sense because these are the stretches of road where most accidents occur, even though 78% of fatal crashes occur on secondary roads - 45 were killed at Easter last year.

An estimated 10 million drivers are expected to be out in force over the Easter holiday, which begins today (Good Friday).

Adeje improvements

Last Wednesday a meeting took place between the local council of Adeje and the Tenerife Cabildo in relation to Tourisn strategy.

The meeting was attended by the mayor of the municipality, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, and the Tenerife Minister of Tourism, Carlos Alonso, plus political and technical representatives of both

administrations.

The aim of the meeting was to take stock of the various projects pending execution in the town of Adeje.

Among the issues discussed during the meeting were the improvements made in the Avenida Los Pueblos and Calle Valencia Street.

In addition, a discussion about the extension and adaptation of the road linking Fañabé with La Caleta, took place.

be made to Unterhaching Street, for the better use and enjoyment of residents and visitors.

It was stressed that the road improvements will benefit not just Adeje but the island’s image as a whole.

The committee reported the status of some pending projects within the municipal area, including the remodelling of the pedestrian promenade linking the coastal area of La Pinta beach with Del Duque beach.

A special One and Only!

THE Tenerife Loves Karaoke bandwagon rolled into Parque Don José in Costa del Silencio for heat three, and parked up outside an already-busy Our Place.

Fluffy and birthday girl Shar made sure everything was in place, and resident compère Aidy helped everything to flow by running the system, making my job a little easier.

The 12 contestants submitted their songs and the night was off and running. Judges for this heat were Jamie Drew (Oasis Fm presenter), John Zammit (Oasis Fm Sales Manager), Paul (a regular at Our Place, and judge from TLK 2012), and Jackie, who doesn’t sing, but knows great vocals when she hears them.

First to sing was Michel, from Belgium,

who chose Wet Wet Wet’s version of Love is All Around, which drew applause from the evergrowing audience.

Laura was next to sing, and chose her qualifying song from heat two, Boyzone’s Picture of You, which was again delivered strongly.

Third up was Ellie, who had competed in heat one where she rocked out a Kings of Leon track. Changing tack completely, her interpretation of Adele’s Make You Feel My Love was beautifully performed and with excellent vocal control.

Mary was fourth, and chose Tina Turner’s On Silent Wings; a well-delivered song with wonderful lyrics which obviously meant something to Mary, who performed with great emotion.

Terry, who sang fifth, chose a power ballad, and opted for Tenerife legend David Alexander’s version of So Deep is the Night, based on an étude by Chopin. It was simply

magnificent, and a fitting homage to the original singer.

Cass, is no stranger to TLK, having entered the competition last year “loads of times”. The

15-year-old provided a beautifully-haunting rendition of Birdy’s Skinny Love.

Honeymooner Louise was next, and was quite disgruntled to find that she was the victim of a TLK stitch-up by her table; two of whom put their names down, and then withdrew. She gave it her all, and provided an animated version of Labi Siffre’s Something Inside So Strong.

Holiday-maker Chris, a late entrant from the West Midlands, chose Lionel Richie’s Say You, Say Me, which proved a little beyond his reach, but he stuck it out to the end.

Tarot reader Alaya was next. She changed her initial song after realising that points were also going to be awarded for interpretation, ditching Macy Gray in favour of Christina Perri’s Jar of Hearts.

And it proved to be a good decision. The song was performed (despite visible, nervous shaking) unbelievably well and Alaya shot into the running for the singoff.

Mick had entered TLK last year, and, by all accounts, his version of Robbie Williams’ Me and My Monkey was expected.

He stuck with the Robster, but chose Feel instead. His rendition was excellent,

compete with a bit of a dance.

Robin, one of the younger contestants and the penultimate singer, chose Who Knew

by Pink. That was quite appropriate, as not many in the venue knew how good she was.

Last up in the qualifying round was TLK’s youngest participant this year, 14-year-old Ashley, who was entering his third consecutive heat.

He was obviously hoping for an improvement on last week’s third place and opted for Ed Sheeran’s A Team.

Ashley threw everything at it and it proved to be his best performance so far, receiving much appreciation from the entire crowd.

So, that was that. All 12 had finished and it just remained to calculate the final three, who turned out to be Cass, Ashley and firsttime entrant Alaya.

Cass was drawn out of the hat first, and chose the lesser-known Marina and the Diamonds’ I am not a Robot.

It is a difficult song in terms of the range and note intervals, and demands absolute precision in its execution.

And she performed it really well.

Alaya chose Adele’s One and Only, and it was evident that something quite special was happening within seconds. The song just

continues to build and rise. Those present were possibly wondering at which point Alaya would fumble, or run out of breath - or notes!

She didn’t, and it was probably the best performance of the competition so far, drawing what was to be the only ovation of the night.

Ashley had the difficult task of following a sublime performance, and reverted to his qualifying song from the previous two rounds.

His Michael Bublé’s Cry Me a River showed both ambition and quality, particularly for someone so young.

But it was obvious to just about everyone that the runaway winner was Alaya, with Ashley second and Cass third, Once she had stopped shaking and crying, Alaya was hailed as winner of heat three, and Jackie presented the trophies to all three.

If I were a betting person, I still wouldn’t like to call it. Alaya Shonyata (it’s Tibetan!), joins Sonmy Díaz Ulloa (from Cuba) and Craig Seeney (from the West Midlands) in the final on Saturday 1st June at Showtime, Karting Las Americas.

Next week’s heat is on Thursday 4th April at the Premier Bar, Amarilla Golf.

Tenerife Auction Rooms TENERIFE Auction Rooms in Las Chafiras is the south’s original auction house, established back in 2009. Now in its fourth year it’s sold more than 20,000 items to date.

It’s a family run business, owned by 37 year-old Rex Anderson.

A traditional auction house, similar to those in the UK, complete with bidding cards, professional auctioneer and porter; the difference being settlement of the deals here in Tenerife are in Euros as opposed to pounds sterling.

The auction takes place every alternate Saturday, the items are available for viewing on the Friday before the auction from 9.30am until 5pm and pre-auction from 9.30am until the actual auction commences at 10.30am.

Rex, who originally hails from Northampton, soon established a

reputation as a leading auction house inviting members of the public to bring their household items for sale.

Dad of two Rex told Canarian Weekly, “We have a mix of items, but mainly household from residents.

It’s mainly household as when people move here they have a mass clear out. The items we have now are when people move, or move

into a new residence and the contents are not to their taste. It’s a good source of items for those that have rental apartments to furnish.

The strangest item we have ever auctioned is a para-glider, the type you see people jumping off mountains with. At times we also have bar and restaurant items.

If you want to sell or buy a larger item and don’t have transport it can be arranged for you at a small fee.

“Nothing gets wasted, as you may imagine there are some lots we just can’t sell so the items and people give us things not to sell but just to get rid of, so they get collected by the Lions and then any money raised goes to the charity.” One recent addition is new auctioneer Dave Penney, who has been resident in Tenerife for many a year, indeed running is own businesses Universal Exports and Aladdin’s Cave in Buzanada and he’s no stranger to the second-hand goods market.

Tenerife Auctions charge one euro to enter an item into the auction that’s per lot. Then there is 20% commission taken on selling an item. If you’re buying an item then there is a buyer’s premium added to the floor price as you would in the UK of 10%.

The auction rooms are situated in Las Chafiras, through the industrial estate take the turning for Amarilla golf and then the first right, it’s just on the right hand side. The facilities are great, a large walk round display area, seating, vending machine and toilets. On viewing days you need to sign in for security purposes and on auction day if you wish to buy something you need to register your details and you’ll receive a bidding card.

The bi-weekly auction is somewhat of a social event, with hundreds viewing on the Friday and approximately 200 attending the auction.

Banks in Cyprus are bombarded for cash THOUSANDS of customers visited banks in Cyprus yesterday (Thursday) as they reopened at midday after the longest enforced bank holiday in Europe’s history.

Queues formed outside branches across the island, but it was completely orderly as employees limited those allowed in at any one time.

And anyway, police and security staff were deployed to maintain order at branches, while G4S employees worked to ensure cash machines were filled up overnight.

Cash withdrawals and other transactions are now subject to tough

restrictions, introduced by the country’s Finance Ministry in an effort to avoid a run on the banks.

The country’s crippled banking system was effectively closed down on 16th March while the terms of the EU’s

controversial 10bn-euro bailout were agreed and implemented.

Large depositors face losses of up to 40% of their savings as part of the deal, which led to concerns that customers would attempt to withdraw

huge sums when the banks reopened.

But strict capital controls includes a 300euro daily withdrawal limit, and a ban on cashing cheques.

Travellers leaving the country can take up to 1,000 euros in cash only, or the equivalent in foreign currency, which is significantly less than expected.

But all was not sweetness and light the previous day when demonstrations against austerity measures continued throughout Cyprus.

The G4S group was a curious choice, especially as it made a complete mess of security at last year’s London Olympics, when British troops were called in to rescue the situation.

But John Arghyrou, its managing director in Cyprus, told Sky News: “I feel we have the resources. I feel extremely confident as

a security company that we can undertake and meet the requirements of our customers.”

Some 180 G4S guards were deployed to banks across Cyprus to work alongside police officers and other security firms.

Mr Arghyrou added: “It is not really guarding - it is assistance services - but close co-operation with the police is essential.”

With just 860,000 residents, Cyprus has around 68bn euros (£57bn) held in its banks.

This outsized financial system attracted deposits from foreigners - especially wealthy Russians but it has struggled since investments in neighbouring Greece went sour.

At last, the Stones are rocking Glastonbury THE Rolling Stones will make their first-ever Glastonbury Festival appearance this year as headliners on the Saturday night.

They have agreed to appear on the main Pyramid Stage after months of rumours, and will be joined by such bands as the Arctic Monkeys and Mumford & Sons.

And they won’t want for a crowd as the huge event is already a sellout, around 135,000 tickets going in under two hours.

Glastonbury, which is being staged over the final weekend of June, took a year off last year because of the Olympics, and to allow the farmland to recover.

Stones frontman Sir Mick Jagger told fans via Twitter: “Can’t wait to play Glastonbury. I have my wellies and my yurt.”

But while his band occupy centre stage,

their former bass player, Bill Wyman, is on the bill for the acoustic stage with his popular Rhythm Kings group.

There is a chance, however, that he may link up with his old buddies for a surprise appearance, as he did when the Stones played London’s O2 Arena in November.

Also among the headliners are Primal Scream, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds and Elvis Costello, as well as chart acts such as Professor Green and Dizzee Rascal.

As usual, Glastonbury will feature a few surprises, including veteran country star Kenny Rogers on

the main stage. Also appearing there will be Rita Ora, Jake Bugg, Rufus Wainwright and the festival veteran Billy Bragg.

Big names on the other stage include Portishead, Smashing Pumpkins, Mercury Prize-winners Alt-J and John Lydon’s band PiL. The xx, The Lumineers, Alabama Shakes and Foals are included on the bill, while elsewhere on the huge, rural Somerset site, performers include Seventies disco pioneers Chic, Tom Tom Club, rap stalwarts Public Enemy, Dinosaur Jr, The Horrors and Johnny Marr.

Search for tragic April almost over Lost camera owner is real picture of delight A WATERPROOF camera proved its worthiness when it was washed up on a Hawaiian beach after being lost in 2007.

It has proved to be more than a stroke of luck for the makers, Canon, and for the owner, American Lindsay Crumbley Scallan, who dropped it while on a diving holiday there.

She has now been offered a free round-trip to Taiwan to collect it by Taiwanese airline China Airlines, for whom the finder, Douglas Chen, is employed.

He came across the underwater camera recently while strolling along a beach at Taitung, on Taiwan’s east coast.

Inside the barnacle-

encrusted Canon was a still-intact memory card, with photos of the owner’s visit still visible.

Mr Cheng was able to identify from where the camera had actually been and then went into detective mode to trace it back to Ms Scallan, more than 6,000 miles away in Georgia.

The airline then contacted its Honolulu staff, who attracted significant media attention with their search.

The company was so delighted with the result that it offered Ms Scallan the free trip.

“She is welcome to visit Taiwan so that she can take home the invaluable memories of her trip to Hawaii,” said airline official Lee Wen-yi.

POLICE searching for the body of a missing fiveyear-old girl since 1st October last year, will call a halt at the end of next month.

April Jones disappeared while playing on her bike with friends near her home in Machynlleth, North Wales.

Mr and Mrs Jones had allowed April to play out late as a treat, after she had received a glowing report from school.

Mark Bridger, said to be a family friend, was charged with her murder the next day, but has always denied being involved, The 47-year-old is also charged with abduction, as well as unlawfully disposing of and concealing her body with intent to pervert the course of justice. He

is set to stand trial on 29th April.

A huge operation to recover her body - described as “unprecedented” in British criminal history - was launched immediately.

Numerous search teams have scoured the surrounding countryside ever since, and hundreds of officers have conducted fingertip explorations of hills, rivers and gorges involving helicopters, dogs, and divers.

A Dyfed Powys Police spokeswoman said: “A massive search area of 60 kilometres square has been searched, with over 300 specific search areas.

“The terrain is extremely challenging.

The mountains, gorges, streams and waterfalls mean extra care has to be taken and specialist safety equipment has to be worn.

“The teams have worked through a detailed plan, based on

information from the investigation.”

He added: “The Force made a commitment to search until all viable lines of enquiry were complete. During April, officers will be searching specific areas of land with a view to all searchareas identified being completed by the end of April. “But a team of specialist officers will be available from the end of April to respond to any new information received.”

Webcams may just save mountaineers ANNUAL deaths by mountaineers in Scotland has led to a suggestion that webcams should be installed to help save lives.

A few popular resorts, such as Loch Ness and the Cairngorms, already have the digital devices fitted to enable climbers to judge the conditions.

But Scottish Conservative MSP Liz Smith believes more webcams would help prevent accidents. ”There are excellent weather forecasts available, but I think this should be expanded,” she said. “A network of webcams would be another tool in the box to help people gauge the conditions at higher altitudes. I believe it would save lives.”

can change rapidly in the Scottish Highlands, and four people died in a January avalanche while descending the 3,658ft Bidean nam Bian, near Glencoe.

Two of them, Dr Rachel Majumdar, 29, and Tom Chesters, 28, who were at university together, were making plans for a future together in Leeds.

They perished alongside ocean-mapping PhD student Christopher Bell, 24, and 25-year-old junior doctor Una Finnegan.

The quartet were swept 1,000ft down the mountain on 19th January when an avalanche struck around 2pm without warning.

Another member of the group was taken to hospital, while a sixth person is thought to

have survived after using an ice axe to anchor himself after jumping clear.

Only last month, another climber died after falling more than 160ft on Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain.

But the Mountaineering Council for Scotland (MCS) has questioned the benefit of webcams, spokesman David Gibson saying: “It’s great that politicians are taking an interest in mountain safety.

“But webcams are more likely to encourage people without the sufficient skills and experience to venture on to the mountains.

“We have a publiclyfunded avalanche service, which provides excellent information and there is a mountain weather information service.”

Brit bathers may not make such a splash this summer!

WHEN the British finally bid farewell to one of the worst winters in memory, they may have to contend with another problem.

Those who always plump for holidays at home may get a shock because their favourite beaches may not be as healthy as usual.

Last summer’s washout affected bathing spots around the UK, with more beaches than ever failing to meet even minimum standards for water quality.

There has also been a huge fall in the number of beaches recommended for bathing in the latest Good Beach Guide.

That’s because heavy rain and flood waters combined to wash pollution from towns, farms and sewers

down to the sea. And swimmers have been warned by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS), which publishes the guide, that they could fall ill if they bath in polluted water.

A total of 42 beaches failed to meet the minimum EU levels expected for bathing water in testing last year, which was an

increase of 17 on 201’’s figures. Only 403 of the 754 UK beaches assessed were awarded the top “recommended” award for their water quality in 2012, which was 113 fewer than in the previous year.

The MCS says the fall in water quality was down to one of the wettest summers on record last year.

The rain and flooding led to an increase in bacteria and viruses in bathing water, coming from a variety of sources, including agricultural and urban run-off, storm waters, poor plumbing reconnections and dog waste.

The pollution can give bathers ear, nose and throat infections and even gastroenteritis The MCS organisation said there was an urgent need for improved monitoring of overflow pipes, which can discharge raw sewage into rivers and the sea when heavy rain overloads the system with water from street drains.

Action is also said to be needed to reduce pollution from farms and urban areas, ahead of tougher EU rules on water quality, scheduled for 2015.

Rachel Wyatt, the M’S coastal pollution officer, said: “We have

recommended fewer beaches in every English region, and in Wales and Scotland.

“In England, the North West and South West were particularly badly hit with the fewest number of recommended beaches for at least a decade.”

She added; “Action must be taken now.

With stricter bathing water standards from 2015, and summers that appear to be getting wetter, the iconic image of people bathing off golden beaches could be at serious risk.

“There is no simple solution to sewage and animal waste reaching our seas.

However, if the water industry, communities and local authorities recognise that there is a problem and begin to work together to find answers, that would be a significant start.”

The current situation heralds an about-turn

from the previous grading, when a record number of beaches were given the top “recommended” award for their water quality.

The South West saw a number of previously recommended beaches fail last year, including Plymouth Hoe East and West, Shaldon and Exmouth in Devon, East Looe and Bude Summerleaze in Cornwall and Charmouth West in Dorset.

Just three beaches in the North West are recommended for excellent water quality in the new guide, with popular beaches at Blackpool North and South failing to meet even the basic, mandatory standards.

But at least Blackpool central and nearby St Anne’s and St Anne’s North beaches improved their water quality to reach the mandatory standard last year.

the dogs, much to their delight. It was a welcome break from their lives in the kennels. The dogs were all exceptionally well-behaved and they lapped up their “freedom”.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and for the wonderful array of Easter Bonnets

adorning the dogs and their owners.

MORE and more dogs continue to be delivered at the refuge daily, and eight were brought into the refuge last Monday.

All of them had been abandoned on the streets by their heartless owners, and some were in terrible

condition. This is one of the reasons why Accion del Sol concentrates so hard on educating children on animal welfare for the future.

For this reason, 120 youngsters from Arona’s CEIP Perez Valero School visited the refuge last week to learn about the importance of animal care and welfare.

Accion is always looking for people to walk the refuge dogs.

If you have some spare time and would like to volunteer, please call to make a few animals really happy.

The refuge is situated at the Granadilla Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to the ecological park ITER, by the windmills.

WE have recently taken responsibility for 11 unwanted puppies.

Sadly, three of them have shown devastating eye problems, which could render them blind for life.

We have taken them to an ophthalmologist in Santa Cruz and have bought many drops and creams to try to save their eyes.

They are with a foster family at the moment and their next appointment is on Monday, when we will know if we have been successful, or if all the time and money spent has been in vain. But we have to try. Live

Last year’s hit entertainment series The Voice returns to BBC One and begins the search for the UK’s next exciting vocal talent. Unconcerned with appearance, the auditions are about one thing and one thing only: the voice.

The series kicks off with a spectacular group performance by the four megastar Coaches - Jessie J, will.i.am, Danny O’Donoghue and Sir Tom Jones, and the first of the Blind Auditions.

The famous red chairs are back and turning as each coach carefully picks the voices he or she wants to work with based solely on what they hear and their musical intuition – and with the chance to be personally mentored and taught by four music superstars, the artists will be hoping that at least one coach hits their famous button and turns their chair for them.

Each coach must form a team of 12 artists, and they’ll use every trick, every name drop, every statistic to persuade the very best to join their team.

Once each coach has a full team, they will advise and train them through the remaining stages until one Artist is named ‘The Voice UK’.

40 Musical Years ITV1, 18.30 Andrew Lloyd Webber: 40 Musical Years is an evening of show-stopping performances, one-off collaborations and insights from Andrew on his extraordinary career.

The 90-minute special, hosted by Michael Ball, features a star-studded line up performing some of Andrew’s best-loved music, as the awardwinning composer and producer celebrates an unbroken run of 40 years of shows in the West End. Stars including Nicole Scherzinger, Kimberley Walsh, Melanie C, Myleene Klass, Il Divo, Tim Minchin and Samantha Barks, will perform special versions of some of Andrew’s greatest hits, including songs from Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar and Tell Me On A Sunday.

Andrew says: “I was flattered when ITV approached me about a 90-minute special, but I said I would only do it if it wasn’t some po-faced tribute to a bloke who’s about to collect his bus pass. I also said it must include the wet sari number from Bombay Dreams! I still don’t know what I’m letting myself in for, especially as Simon Cowell has filmed an interview for the show.”

The special will also feature an eagerly-anticipated world first performance of a track from Andrew’s forthcoming musical, Stephen Ward, by classical guitarist Milos. This will be an exclusive opportunity for fans to hear new music from Andrew and learn more about his next West End production.

Throughout the show, Andrew will share anecdotes and discuss the evolution and influences behind his biggest music masterpieces – just how did he turn biblical figures, domestic pets and roller-skating trains into global entertainment spectacles? And where did Andrew develop his instinct for spotting star talent?

Cameras will go behind the scenes to provide a glimpse into Andrew’s working life, while speaking to some of his closest friends and colleagues, including Michael Caine and Alex Ferguson.

For the show’s finale Love Changes Everything will be sung by Michael Ball accompanied by a chorus of pupils from London’s Highbury Grove School.

Andrew visited Highbury Grove School last year to commend the oncefailing school for putting music at the core of its curriculum and inspiring a new generation to fulfil their potential and enjoy the arts.

Clare Balding introduces liveCHO coverage of the 159th Boat Race on London's River Thames, with Oxford University hoping to avenge last year's dramatic defeat to Cambridge University.

The first contest took place in 1829, and has been held every year since 1856, but few races have been as incident-packed as last year's, which was interrupted by a protestor in the water. Cambridge went on to win following a restart, although Oxford were disadvantaged after suffering a broken oar in a clash of blades.

This year the Oxford eight hold a 21kg weight advantage, but both crews can call upon a British Olympic medallist; Oxford's Constantine Louloudis helped the men's eight win bronze at London 2012, while Cambridge's George Nash claimed bronze in the men's coxless pair. Commentary comes from Andrew Cotter, Dan Topolski and Wayne Pommen.

The Boat Race 2013 BBC1, 15.15 Clare Balding introduces live coverage of the 159th Boat Race on London’s River Thames, with Oxford University hoping to avenge last year’s dramatic defeat to Cambridge University.

The first contest took place in 1829, and has been held every year since 1856, but few races have been as incident-packed as last year’s, which was interrupted by a protestor in the water. Cambridge went on to win following a restart, although Oxford were disadvantaged after suffering a broken oar in a clash of blades.

This year the Oxford eight hold a 21kg weight advantage, but both crews can call upon a British Olympic medallist; Oxford’s Constantine Louloudis helped the men’s eight win bronze at London 2012, while Cambridge’s George Nash claimed bronze in the men’s coxless pair.

British workers return to the place where they did their jobs in some of the toughest conditions in the world. London bus driver Josh West heads back to the chaotic streets of Manila in the Philippines. In 2010, he spent an emotional two weeks learning to drive a jeepney - a colourfully decorated, adapted jeep which has no power steering, dodgy lights and an uncomfortable seat. He formed a strong bond with his host Rogelio Castro, moved by the daily struggle of an ordinary Filipino working to feed his family and lift them from poverty. Since Josh came home to the UK, he has raised money to try and transform Rogelio's life. Now he is returning to Manila to see how things have changed and to set out on a new adventure that sees him star on Manila's most popular chat show and go fishing in the South China Sea, before taking to the streets once more in the terrifying jeepney.

Suranne Jones and Lesley Sharp return as the formidable crime fighting duo Scott & Bailey in eight new episodes for ITV by Red Production Company.

When a worried neighbour knocks on Janet’s (Lesley Sharp) door, she can only guess at the horrors to come. Meanwhile, newly wed Rachel (Suranne Jones) longs to be single while Janet realises her own marriage is over.

A few months into her marriage, Rachel (Suranne Jones) is already struggling with the relentless proximity of living with Sean (Sean Maguire). Knowing that she is the one at fault, she would rather try and keep out of the way than confront the problem. Cheerful and sexy as ever, Sean is happy to embrace every facet of his new wife, including the door-slamming grump who comes through the door at the end of the day.

Delighted with being back in her daughter’s life, Rachel’s mum Sharon (Tracie Bennett) starts to display the sort of behaviour that reminds Rachel why she was right to have kept her at arm’s length all these years.

Janet’s (Lesley Sharp) home life isn’t plain sailing either. Having acknowledged that their marriage really is over, she and Ade (Tony Pitts) decide to put their house on the market, and stay living together until it sells. But even though Janet knows she doesn’t want Ade, she can’t help wanting a bit of what he’s got – a new love interest who’s putting a smile on his face. And the demands of her new role as ‘acting sergeant’ mean that juggling child-care has just got even harder.

The story of the week starts very close to home for Janet, when a worried neighbour knocks on her door one night, concerned about the smell coming from a house down the road. What Janet discovers is the severed head of 75-year-old Eunice Bevan at the bottom of the stairs, her body at the top, and her bedridden husband Joe (George Costigan) upstairs, emaciated and barely able to speak. Tracing Joe and Eunice’s relatives proves difficult, but when Rachel tracks down daughter Helen (Nicola Walker), working on a make-up counter, she seems strangely unmoved by her mother’s death. As Joe becomes more lucid in hospital, and Helen’s alibi starts to fall apart, she looks very much like our number one suspect.

They must then survive the Palate Test, which sees John demonstrate a chicken pot pie with coleslaw.

The Motorway Cops deal with the growing problem of stolen cars and the damage the drivers cause to other motorists when they try to get away from the police. In the UK a vehicle is stolen every six minutes, and many of them are then used to commit crime. In the Midlands, Motorway Cops Adam Toal and John Martin are involved in a high-speed pursuit along dark country roads, as a gang of burglars in a stolen car risk both their lives and those of others in their attempt to get away. In Leeds, it is the same problem as PCs Mick Roffe and Jim Duffy attend a smash in which a car thief has crashed into a taxi. The taxi driver is badly injured, but the thief is unharmed and unrepentant.

The Mimic is a new fivepart sitcom centred on the fortunes of Martin Hurdle, a seemingly unremarkable maintenance man who conceals an uncanny ability to mimic voices. In episode four, after a blissful few weeks, Jean's love life comes to a halt.

Stephen's management of Martin's new career as a voice-over artist is in full swing and he's secured him another job recording some sat nav voices. When he finds himself at a loose end during recording, Martin starts to kill time with an ad lib multicharacter conversation. Little does Martin know he's being filmed on the studio security camera and the subsequent footage is about to change his life.

Dogging Tales Channel 4, 22.00 Many people have heard of dogging, or know places where it apparently happens, but very few know what goes on in this secretive world. Dogging Tales, is an intimate and compelling documentary told through doggers themselves, who share their experiences of a mysterious, little understood neck of the woods.

Filmed over ten months, the documentary follows a range of people whilst attempting to gain insight into why men and women engage in or watch sexual activity in front of strangers in public areas under the cover of darkness.

Part of the True Stories strand, showcasing the best of feature length documentaries, Dogging Tales is directed by award-winning photographer Leo Maguire – who made his critically-acclaimed debut in 2012 with Gypsy Blood: True Stories (Best Newcomer at Grierson Awards, Baftanominated for Photography).

The first interviews with doggers take place in the ‘real world’ – as their day draws to a close and they consider their life, families and relationships.

As they prepare to go out they begin to slowly shed their daily personas in anticipation, and Maguire accompanies them on excursions to laybys, woods and picnic spots around the UK that often double as dogging locations after dusk.

The Intern Channel 4, 21.00 Hilary Devey wants to kick down some doors. Determined to get deserving young people a chance to land their dream jobs, she has persuaded some of Britain’s most exciting companies to let her hijack their normal recruitment policy.

Each week three young hopefuls are given a week’s trial in the job of their dreams. The three candidates don’t know it but Hilary has arranged for the week to be packed full of the biggest challenges and worst-case scenarios possible. Based on real life situations, each scenario they encounter will test a particular skill or aptitude deemed crucial to being a success in the particular industry.

Each company boss is offering the best candidate a chance to secure their dream job – but only if they have seen the qualities and raw potential needed to cut it in their highly competitive world. This will be the ultimate undercover job interview, allowing the candidates to prove they’ve got what it takes to secure the coveted job on offer.

With one million 18-24 year olds without a job in the UK, it’s never been harder for young people to get on the career ladder. Self-made millionaire and businesswoman Hilary Devey believes an entire generation are getting a raw deal in the current job market.

Hilary comments: “There are a lot of bright young people out there in dead end jobs, going no-where who think they have no future in this country. We are wasting so much talent.”

Hilary believes you don’t need a good CV and qualifications to succeed in the job market, saying, “I’ve not needed a good CV and qualifications to succeed, they are irrelevant to me. I’m interested in dedication and damned hard work.”

She believes that if you give people the opportunity to show what they are made of they will grasp the opportunity and prove what they are made of.

Peter Andre is back with his hit ITV2 reality series, My Life.

Pete is grief-stricken following the death of his brother Andrew, who lost his battle against cancer. Having postponed many of his tour dates towards the end of last year, Pete’s back on the road to finish off what he started. It’s only four weeks since Andrew passed away and Pete struggles through rehearsals, finding only the briefest respite when performing on stage.

Pete takes girlfriend Emily to the National Television Awards. It’s his first public appearance since Andrew’s death, not feeling up to questions from the press he hatches a plan.

Pete enjoys a much-needed day off with his children and despite freezing conditions, they hit the local adventure park and brave the zip wire - but behind the smiles, Pete’s still suffering.

Pete heads south to perform in Bournemouth, but a chance meeting with a young girl pushes him to breaking point. He’s also dragged back to the past, when he’s forced to respond to a media statement put out by ex Katie Price following reactions to her recent marriage.

Worldwide famous, that’s Linekers Bar to say the least. Its main target audience is, for want of a better term, the first half of life.

Having said that, I have seen pensionable ages in Linekers enjoying the fun regularly, and the staff are always ready to exploit the fact that there is a nana dancing on a pole to Pitbull.

This brings me nicely to the staff. To work in Linekers, you have to be highly-energetic and a complete team player.

There are always summer jobs which are just seasonal positions, but most of the staff are long-term and here all year.

There is a career path, too, with some of the existing staff who started out as PRs coming through the ranks and, at times, having to fill the role of Acting Manager - a task which requires a lot of skill and experience.

Current manager James Blyther is wellseasoned in the running of this high-profile bar.

He knows all too well that the expectations of this popular brand are

IT’S a pleasure to write about the entertainment scene, and more so this week as I’m writing about the renowned Linekers Bar, at Starco in Las Americas.

I have been working quite closely with the staff, planning the big St George’s Day celebrations coming up. And, of course, I have the Linekers Lunchtime Show on Oasis Fm. Linekers has become a huge brand over the years, with bars opening around the globe and becoming successful everywhere.

However, @Linekers10erife (Twitter) was the baby which is now a monster. The original, and now well-known format, still rocks the bar every night.

It is unique and an almost “no-holdsbarred” approach to their entertainment programme is fearless,

high. James takes care of staff management as well as the entertainment programme, and he is always at hand when the bar is visited by celebrity guests.

His hosting skills are second to none, which is why celebs visit Linekers in the first place, and keep coming back.

From top football teams like Newcastle United to soap stars, socialites, and other sports stars like boxers Ricky Hatton, Carl Froch and Nicky Cook, this really is the place to be seen with the stars.

When I asked James, what was the most important dynamic at Linekers, he simply said: “Everything!”

He went on to say that the Djs are always an important element.

It’s their personalities over the mic that the customers love, along with the right musical choices.

All games and staff shows are organised by the Dj, and it’s one of the most important roles at Linekers.

New DJ Luke already at home here!

LUKE WARNE, the new Dj at Linekers Bar, hails from Long Eaton, a small town on the border of Nottingham and Derby.

As a youngster, the 25-year-old’s dream was to play professional football, and his future looked bright after he spent his teenage years in football academies at Leicester City and Coventry City.

His dream seemed to be coming together, but having left school and training with Derby County, he was turned down for an apprenticeship after a few months because of a repetitive injury.

Devastated, he came to Tenerife and began working in bars while trying to work out in which direction to go.

It wasn’t long

before he got the entertainment bug.

After a year over here, he returned to the UK and auditioned for TUI Travel.

Luke succeeded in becoming a Thomson entertainer and spent last year in Aya Napa, Cyprus, gaining valuable stage experience before realising that working under the corporate umbrella in a squeakyclean environment was not for him.

He quickly returned to Tenerife and, before long, Luke was given a try-out as cover Dj at Linekers.

He took to it, despite never having Dj’d before, and now he’s there every night from 10pm till 4am.

No doubt, he will be another Linekers’ success story!

Pre-tax profits for the 12 months to the beginning of February at the home improvements conglomerate were down 11.4 per cent from £807 million to £715 million, while like-forlike sales fell by 5.6 per cent.

by Britain’s washout summer, the second wettest on record, falling by more than a quarter last year.

Ironically the sales of Wellington boots rose.

The DIY group’s chief executive Ian Cheshire said the home improvement market is particularly sensitive

to weather conditions, adding that the current wintry conditions are a fresh challenge. Easter, normally a busy time for his stores, was “not looking like a chirpy outdoor piece” because of the climate.

“You have four big bank holidays a year which are the equivalent of Christmas trading for us,” he told The Daily Mirror, speaking of last year. “You might expect to lose one because of the weather but we lost all four, and that was across Europe.”

The group was also hit by the weak pound, taking a £39 million hit when overseas earnings were converted into sterling. Cheshire said he expects the market to remain challenging as the squeeze on consumers’ income continues. ·

NEARLY half of Brits are planning to spend at least some time this Easter doing DIY, according to Nationwide Building Society.

DIY and home improvements are firmly on our ‘to do’ list with the Society recording a staggering 69% increase in home improvement loans from the second half of 2007 to 2012. And, the average size for these loans increased by 21% from £7,932 to £9,570 for the same period.

So what are the DIY jobs on the nation’s Easter hit list?

Looking forward to Easter, 42% are planning to spend up to £200, 15% between £201 - £300, 12% £301-500, 9% £501-1000, whereas 8% are spending £1001 - £5000 and 11% are spending £5001 - £more than £10,000.

The majority of people will fund their projects by using their wages (37%), while over a third (34%) will use savings to cover the costs, 10% will use a credit card and 3% a personal loan.

While interestingly Nationwide’s own data suggests a surge in improvement loans and on the value of

the loan amount.

Graham Pilkington, Divisional Director Banking, Insurance and Investments at Nationwide said: “Easter has traditionally been a favourite time for DIYing, and this year is no different with over half of us planning to break out the paint brushes and filler.

“But what’s most interesting is the growth in people taking out loans to fund bigger projects, such as new bathrooms and kitchens. The number of people moving house over the last few years has declined, so the increase in the number and size of personal loans suggests that homeowners are spending more to maintain and upgrade their current property rather than moving on.”

WHEN choosing a new style, maybe it's time you had a good think out of your normal box.

Clients often come to the salon with a set image in their heads, yet leave with something totally different.

That’s not because we don’t listen – we do!

But sometimes, what you perceive as a good look or idea for your hair can sometimes be the exact opposite.

This usually happens with colour. A client may arrive saying she wants to go from blonde to dark.

Yet when questions are asked about makeup changes, lifestyle and clothing, and we then place a real hair swatch of the desired colour next to her face, sometimes the response isn’t always what she had expected.

You can all imagine how you'd look with your new hair, but it isn’t as easy as trying a dress on. You can’t just take it off. Hair, and choosing its new style and/or colour, is a matter of elimination.

It is easier to start with the question: “What wouldn’t you like?” This is so much easier than fighting through what you do want, only to end up with something that’s going to send you home in tears.

as ABC. Never try to go too far away from what you know and love because dramatic changes often end in tears - mine!

Try not to think only of what you want to create, but what is actually possible with your hair. And never trust a friend’s advice but go with your own feelings.

Many times, clients leave the salon loving their hair but then, a few days later, decide they don’t like it. Or is it that their friend’s husband’s sister has said something bad?

It’s normally jealousy.

If you are comfortable with what you are doing and wearing etc, then stick to your guns. I hate it when women say: “OOOhhh, I can’t change my hair because my husband won’t like it!”

he skips along to the barbers? I thought not. Be yourself and love your hair. Listen to yourself and be confident in your look or new image.

Be positive when wanting to try something new on your next salon visit, and don’t be bullied into having what you had when the kids were young, or what your husband/boyfriend wants.

Sauna men are feeling heat below MEN who visit saunas frequently may be damaging their sperm, which adds weight to an earlier theory that heat from laptops could have the same effect.

Italian researchers found that healthy men who used saunas had a lower sperm count, causing damage which could last several months.

In this new study, Finnish men in their 30s who had normal sperm counts were monitored.

They all spent 15 minutes in a sauna twice a week for three months, after which their counts were tested.

Researchers discovered that they were lower at the end of the study than at the beginning - and only six

months later did they return to normal.

Dr Andrew Kramer, a urologist at the University of Maryland Medical Centre, told the website LiveScience that heat was to blame because it affected sperm production.

The sauna-study research team, reporting in the Human Reproduction journal said: “The large use of Finnish sauna in Nordic countries, and its growing use in other parts of the world, make it important to consider the impact of this lifestyle choice on men’s fertility.’

They added that in countries were saunas are widely used, doctors should flag up the problems they may cause to couples struggling to conceive.

Sperm counts are falling at an alarming rate - up to 38% in a decade - with diet and life-

style largely to blame.

A recent Spanish study discovered that even in young men, sperm concentration fell by an average of 2% a year - and could soon have their fertility compromised.

A 10 year-study of more than 200 men found the average concentration went from 72 million spermatozoids per millilitre in 2001 to 52 million/ml in 2011.

Meanwhile, a British survey published last month found that nearly 20% of couples spend more than a year trying for a baby.

And the effect of not being able to conceive is so bad for some couples that it forces them apart - or puts their relationship under great pressure.

Experts have blamed women for delaying motherhood and the obesity epidemic as the two likeliest reasons for rising infertility.

Youth cancer deaths have fallen by 50%

CANCER deaths among teenagers and young adults in the UK have dropped by around 50% since the Seventies.

Yet cancer remains the main cause of death from any disease in this age bracket, with transport accidents alone responsible for more deaths.

A new report from Cancer Research UK states that deaths fell from about 580 per year to 300 in this age group, while the largest drop was in those with leukaemia.

More specialised treatments are probably behind the downward trend, but a teenage cancer expert believes more youngsters should take part in clinical trials.

The report, Cancer Statistics Report: Teenage and Young Adult Cancer, calculated that about 2,100 young people aged 15-24 years

old are diagnosed with cancer each year in the UK. But in the past 30 years or so, death rates have fallen in males from 88 deaths per

million (in 1975-1977) to 44 deaths per million (in 2008-2010) - and in females, from 61 to 31.

Leukaemia deaths among teenagers and young adults have experienced the biggest drop since 1995 in the UK - from an average of 54 per year to 39 in 2006-2010 in young men and from 38 to 21 deaths among females.

Brain tumours were the most common cause of cancer deaths in this age group between 2008 and 2010.

Simon Davies, chief executive of Teenage Cancer Trust, is delighted with the falling figures, but he wants even greater improvements.

“It’s fantastic to see

such a fall, but many of the rarer cancers which affect young people, like sarcomas, have made little or no progress,” he said.

“More investment in rare-cancer research is urgently needed, and we want to work with Cancer Research UK and the pharmaceutical industry to ensure better access to clinical trials for young people with cancer.”

The report said that fewer than 20% of patients aged 1524 with cancer take part in clinical trials, compared with 50-70% of child cancer patients under 15 in the UK. It added that broadening access to clinical trials was essential to improve

knowledge of the best treatments for cancers.

Dr Harpal Kumar, chief executive of Cancer Research UK, said more needed to be done to make treatments kinder and more effective.

“Drug development and clinical trials are at the heart of helping more teenagers and young adults both survive cancer and live a full life after their treatment.

“Too many young people are left out of clinical trials due to rigid age restrictions and this must change for us to continue to see improvements across all cancer types.”

Those restrictions exist because there are potential dangers in giving young cancer patients adult doses of drugs, therefore researchers are often reluctant to develop trials which cover this age group.

Children’s cancer drug trials are also extremely specialised.

Although cancer mortality rates for young people are falling, the incidence of all types of teenage and young adult cancers combined has been rising since the 1990s.

The report was the result of a collaboration between the North West Cancer Intelligence Unit, on behalf of the National Cancer Intelligence Network, and the Institute of Cancer Studies, at the University of Manchester.

Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper.

Cream the butter and sugar together in a bowl until light and fluffy.

Beat in the egg yolk until well combined.

Fold the flour into the mixture, then stir in the mixed spice, currants and candied peel. Stir in enough milk to form a stiff dough.

Place onto the baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes.

cuits from the tray and set aside to cool on a wire rack.

Crispy chocolate Easter nests Ingredients 225g/8oz plain chocolate, broken into pieces 2 tbsp golden syrup 50g/2oz butter 75g/3oz cornflakes 36 mini chocolate eggs Preparation method

Line a 12-hole fairy cake tin with paper cases.

Melt the chocolate, golden syrup and butter in a bowl set over a pan of gently simmering water, (do not let the base of the bowl touch the water). Stir the mixture until smooth.

Hot cross buns are the ultimate Easter treat and they’re easy to make at home. Make some for yourself and some for your friends and family.

1. To make 12 hot cross buns, you will need 625g strong white flour, 45g chilled butter, 45g golden caster sugar plus 2 extra tablespoons, 1 teaspoon each salt and ground cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon each ground allspice and grated nutmeg, 11/2 teaspoons fast-action dried yeast, 1 egg, 275ml milk plus 4 extra tablespoons, 100g raisins, 25g chopped mixed peel, and oil for greasing.

2. Sift 500g of the flour

Remove the bowl from the heat and gently stir in the cornflakes until all of the cereal is coated in the chocolate.

Divide the mixture

between the paper cases and press 3 chocolate eggs into the centre of each nest. Chill in the fridge for 1 hour, or until completely set.

Hot cross buns into a large glass or ceramic bowl. Cut up the butter and rub in with your fingertips until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in 45g caster sugar, salt, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg and yeast. Beat the egg in another bowl, then mix it into the dry ingredients with 275ml milk, until you have a soft, pliable dough.

3. Tip the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Gradually work in the raisins and peel. Return to the bowl and cover loosely with

oiled cling film. Leave in a warm place for 1 hour, until doubled in size.

4. Tip the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead well to knock out all the air, then cut into 12 pieces. Put your lightly floured hand – slightly cupped, with fingers open – over 1 piece, then rotate your hand in a circular motion, pressing down on the dough to create a neat ball. Repeat with the rest of the dough.

Put on 2 greased trays, spaced apart. Cover with oiled cling film and leave in a warm place to rise for 30 minutes.

5. Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan180°C/gas 6.

Sift the remaining flour into a bowl and stir in about 125ml tap water to make a smooth wet paste. Spoon into a freezer bag, snip off the corner and pipe a cross over each bun. Bake for 15 minutes until golden.

6. Meanwhile, put the extra milk and extra sugar into a pan. Heat gently to dissolve the sugar, then boil for 2-3 minutes until syrupy.

Brush the glaze over the warm buns. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Serve split open and toasted with lots of butter.

WHAT springs to mind when you think of Sundays?

A long lie-in, the Sunday papers or a meal out with family?

If the latter is your idea of a perfect end to the weekend, then here’s the ultimate place for you.

Kikiriki, in the Apolo Centre near the big roundabout is Los Cristianos, has long been regarded as a special venue for great food. And now you can eat there on a Sunday afternoon.

What’s so new about that? I hear you ask.

Okay, nothing for opening on a Sunday, but when I add that you will receive a genuine40% discount, then it becomes even more appealing.

The menu in this restaurant is truly spectacular: a true mix of meats, seafood and beautiful vegetarian

options.

And with fabulous service and relaxing surroundings, it really does depict what Sundays are all about.

three other people on this occasion, as I have eaten here on many others, which gave me a chance to taste some of the alternative dishes on offer.

So on we go.

We ordered four different starters: Catalan bread, a mix of Mediterranean flavours, malty bread, topped with fresh tomatoes and garlic, all smothered in virgin olive oil; Chopitos, deep-fried baby squid in a fresh, crispy batter; onion cake, a moist, savoury cake infused with salmon; and, also new for Sundays, special paella, a dish so packed with meat and seafood that it was hard to see the rice.

All of these starters, as with every morsel of food here, comes ultrafresh and so very, very tasty.

The main courses again didn’t disappoint and, as always, I had to have the special Kikiriki chicken. This is their signature dish - a halfchicken, or quarter if you’re not too hungry, perfectly roasted with rosemary, moist meat and crispy skin. It’s perfect for me, by the way, and this was exactly what I got.

It is served with four extremely individual sauces - pepper, blue cheese, Kikiriki special sauce and my favourite, the vicious spicy - all bursting with flavour and all complement the succulent meat of the poultry so well.

The thing is, the chicken is so nice that it’s really hard to go past it on the menu, so that’s why I was pleased I wasn’t alone because one of my fellow Kikirikiers plumped for a beautiful fillet of sole.

This was again perfectly cooked, and it just fell apart into satisfying, meaty flakes.

And with side-orders of garlic potatoes and moreish spinach to accompany all the meals, I was beginning to reach full.

Thank heavens for the dessert stomach.

Now, I know I go on about desserts and it’s because, well, I love ’em.

But I can honestly say that I would travel miles for the Lemon Meringue pie in this place.

It’s simply stunning, and it’s so lemony that it gives you the look on your face of an old dear in a workingmen’s club when somebody talks during the bingo, and with sugary-sweet meringue and gorgeous pastry … oh I’m drooling now.

So to recap: all the food we had on this glorious Sunday afternoon was nothing short of incredible, the service again spot-on - then we were given the bill and couldn’t believe the vast amount of money saved with the huge discount we received.

BRITS FLOCK TO THE SUNSHINE WITH no sign of Spring in sight and forecasters warning of further bad weather in the UK,

leading holiday company Thomson is seeing unprecedented demand for late deals to the sunshine.

Brits are escaping in droves to sun-

nier climes with online bookings to warmer destinations like the Canary Islands up 73% versus last year.

Last March was the third warmest on record in the UK, but, this year the cold temperatures look set to continue over Easter and Brits have seemingly had enough.

Bookings to other winter sun destinations like Greece and Tunisia are also up 45% and 37% respectively from 2012. It would also appear customers aren’t confident of an improvement in the weather with online searches for holidays in the sunshine

up 15% compared with the previous March.

Director of Holiday Experience, Ian Chapman, commented: “We are seeing a strong demand for late deals with people looking to escape the extended winter, and get out of the gloom.

The Canary Islands and Tunisia report up to nine hours of sunshine per day during the winter months so it’s no surprise that Brits are heading south in the run up to Easter.”

BRITISH holidaymakers spending Easter in Cyprus have been warned to take extra spending money with them in view of the country’s financial crisis.

All but two of the country’s largest lenders were set to reopen on Tuesday. But the island’s Central Bank performed an aboutlate on Monday night and insisted that all banks would stay closed until yesterday (Thursday).

Banks throughout Cyprus have been closed since the middle of the month as politicians debated methods of raising the money necessary for the country to qualify for an international bail-out.

Financial authorities feared that, amid fears of Government ministers taking a percentage of people’s bank savings, worried depositors would rush to drain their accounts.

And though ATMs (cashpoints) have been operating throughout the closure, many

residents have soon run out of money. Around one million Brits visit Cyprus each year, and while it is a year-round destination, the most popular times to visit are July and August.

Some 70,000 Brits went there last Easter.

A spokesperson at ABTA, the Travel Association, advised travellers to take some euros with them for Easter so they were caught short unexpectedly.

She added: “All ATMs of the local Cyprus banks are functioning, so holiday-makers should be able to withdraw money easily.

The Bank of Cyprus and Laiki Bank currently

have a restriction on their own ATMs of 100 euros per customer.”

TravelSupermarket’s Bob Atkinson advised visitors to take “as many Euros as you think you’ll need” for accommodation, entertainment, food and drink.

Tourists would be wise to take heed because several businesses are demanding cash only, and they are refusing to take credit payments or cheques.

Mr Atkinson warned holiday-makers to take extra cash for items from, say, the chemist, in case cards were not accepted because of the banking complications.

He also had some

advice for those who have pre-booked hire cars, saying: “With a rental car, you’re normally asked for a credit-card guarantee, and that hasn’t changed. But do check with your rental-car supplier the day before, or the day you travel.”

On a lighter note, the travel expert added: “There’s no reason for holiday-makers to panic. The sun is still shining, and the Cypriots will welcome tourists.”

And the ABTA spokesperson added: “Customers travelling to Cyprus over the Easter break can expect to enjoy a warm and trouble-free visit.”

ZOE’s such a super lady

By Jav ELECTRIC cars, traditionally, have been hindered by price and performance, yet Renault’s ZOE whispers along like a super-refined supermini.

But the cost is similar to that of a diesel-powered Clio, and a £70-amonth battery lease fee means running costs are also comparable.

If you can live with the range, you’ll travel in more comfort and at less cost to the environment if you drive a ZOE. While various other car-makers have dipped a toe in the water of mass marketing electric vehicles, Renault have thrown themselves at it wholeheartedly with the arrival of ZOE, their fourth all-electric model.

This Clio-sized fiveseater has the potential to tempt people from their conventional superminis.

The ZOE is based on the latest Clio platform, and built in the same plant as its stablemate in France. Yet while the width and wheelbase are almost identical it is 22mm longer and

114mm taller. It seems bigger still, thanks to the high shoulder line, curvaceous door panels and large front bumper, punctuated by small daytime running lights.

But the ZOE looks mostly like a conventional supermini.

The only clues to its electric drivetrain are the lack of an exhaust pipe or fuel flap, and the blue detailing in the lights.

Inside, the centre console is borrowed from the Clio, but instead of regular dials, there’s a screen which shows the car’s speed and range.

All models also feature Renault’s tablet-style R-Link set-up, with customisable apps ranging from the usual sat-nav, audio and Bluetooth, to one that reads your horoscope.

All 290kg of lithiumion battery is mounted under the front and

rear seats, allowing for a 338-litre boot, which is 38 litres larger than that of the Clio.

The back bench is set quite high but there’s plenty of space, even for tall passengers.

Meanwhile, the driving position is also higher than the supermini’s,

giving the unexpected bonus of excellent visibility and making town traffic even easier to deal with.

Under the bonnet, a built-in Chameleon battery-charger sits just above where a normal engine would be. It adapts automatically to the strength of the power source, and can charge the battery in anything from 30 minutes to nine hours.

This restores the range to around 100 miles of mixed driving. Renault claim a 130-mile range, although they admit this could drop to 60 miles in the sort of freezing weather being

experienced in the UK right now!

Under the charger is the motor, which produces the equivalent of 87bhp. More important is the 220Nm of torque and lack of a gearbox, which allow the ZOE to sprint off the line easily, even though it’s nearly 400kg heavier than a diesel Clio. The foursecond 0-30mph sprint makes carving through traffic easy and, overall, it’s a brilliant urban car.

What makes it so impressive is that the ZOE feels just like any other supermini to drive, which puts it right at the top of the fully-electric car list.

award-winning, turbocharged, EcoBoost petrol engine.

than ever before, and the Focus is available as a five-door hatchback and a practical estate,

as well as a highperformance ST model, which was launched last year and is offered

in both bodystyles.

The ST is powered by a 247bhp 2.0-litre EcoBoost turbocharged petrol engine and has a starting price of around £22,000, which means it significantly undercuts rivals like the Renaultsport Megane and VW Golf GTI. A new Focus RS is likely to arrive next year, and it could be powered by a 2.3-litre, four-cylinder, EcoBoost engine producing as much as 350bhp.

If this does come off, it will be a real blast because this would drop the 0-60mph time below the five-second mark.

The Focus steering has got progressively softer over the years, but this latest version is still

the best to drive, and it also boasts superb body control, a precise gearshift, progressive brakes and a firm, but still comfortable ride.

The engine line-up includes 1.6-litre petrol units ranging from 104bhp to 180bhp and 1.6 and 2.0-litre diesels ranging from 95bhp to 161bhp.

Pick of the bunch is probably the 1.0-litre turbocharged EcoBoost, which is good fun and remarkably frugal, returning 56.5mpg.

The 1.6-litre EcoBoost is another great engine, but it’s costly, and the 113bhp 1.6 TDCI Zetec is better value and will return more than 67mpg.

Super Sandro inspires a magical Marino side

CD Marino 2 Real Aviles 1 Getafe B 0 CD Tenerife 0 SOMETHING is stirring in Las Americas. After a season of struggle, CD Marino are finally good!

And I mean on fire, white-hot, tearing up the league, good! They have won as many matches in the last fortnight as they did in the first seven months.

The only goal they have conceded in three matches was a dodgy penalty and, somehow, they have got a chance of survival.

Okay, it’s not much of a chance, but they could easily have been relegated by now.

The fact is, they have now got belief, a hardened work ethic and, dare I say this, a swagger.

A glance at the table shows you it may be too late, but at least they are having a go!

On Sunday, in front of another poor home crowd, they battered Aviles.

The scoreline doesn't reflect the dominance Marino enjoyed. Again, they were ahead with an early goal, Iker on target again, and they never gave Aviles a chance to settle.

time I had seen Marino in the flesh for a few weeks and they have improved leaps and bounds.

Ayoze has settled in nicely, and while fellowTenerife defender Amado is still a liability, the defence is far better organised.

Airam put in a fine shift and, with Chema darting around, Marino were in full control. And then there is Sandro. There is not much to him and at times he could be a little braver.

But he is shaping up to be a real footballer.

He has flourished during his loan season and he will be a real asset for CD Tenerife next year.

He has a sweet first touch, has excellent vision and loves to run at defenders. He gave Jeffrey and Boris the fright of their lives - and every time he had the ball, he made something happen.

Marino were comforta-

ble at 1-0 when the sides changed ends and, minutes into the restart, it was two. Aviles struggled to clear their lines and Rebollo could only deflect Balduino’s shot into Sandro’s path.

He will not score many easier goals, but he certainly deserved this one.

He would squander a few other opportunities, as did Balduino - and when Jeffrey was sent off late on, the game was up. Or it should have been.

Alberto clumsily made contact in the box with Geni who dusted himself down and sent the keeper the wrong way with the spot-kick.

This led to a nervy finale, but, with Aviles playing just two at the back, Marino had their chances to smash in a third.

Some poor finishing and an over-zealous linesman scuppered that. But Marino saw it through to the final whistle.

They are 12 points away from any form of safety and, realistically, need to hit 41 points to have any chance of survival. That means six wins from the last eight games.

It’s a massive, massive ask. BUT a glance at the fixture list brings hope.

They host Leganes in a few weeks, but that aside they have a great run-in. Every match is a cup final and the players look hungry.

Either way, they are a team to watch as the season draws to a close.

While they should make short work of Sanse this Sunday, Tenerife host Coruxo, who have punched above their weight this season and will be delighted to be so far up the table.

But they are not a great side. They haven’t scored in their last three away games and were spanked 5-1 at home by Real C a few weeks ago.

In many ways, it’s the perfect match for Tenerife as they meander towards the play-off's.

Pink lads slay Knights INN The Pink A have had a tough season in Oasis Fm Pool League’s Division One, and there is no doubt they will be a stronger side next year.

They have often grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory and are a match for anyone on their day.

The team have also troubled the best sides without really getting their rewards, but that all changed on Tuesday.

It all clicked into place

as they dispatched Phoenix Knights 8-4 in Los Abrigos. Only Gareth lost in the first ‘set’ and 3-1 swiftly became 4-2.

Bubbles produced a fine break clearance to get Phoenix back in the match, only for Pink to step it up a notch. Two straight wins from John, coupled with Terry’s win over Roger was enough to seal the match.

The 8-4 scoreline was fair and was the green light for Knights cap-

But second-place Tenerife Hammers A were pushed to the limit.

They came back from 3-0 down and sneaked past Hammers C 7-5.

The C team are on a wretched run and must have thought they had claimed a scalp.

Division Two is heating up nicely as we get to the final few furlongs.

Long-time leaders Next Door won again, 10-2 at Bar 13, but they are being reeled in.

By Geoff Huxtable AFTER a long hard season, and in the build-up to the annual closing-night presentation, all League players were able to enter the Memorial Trophy.

The singles knock-out competition, held at Nauta Bar in Guaza, is a chance for individual glory.

More importantly, though, it raises funds for charity in memory of those former players who are, sadly, no longer with us.

The chosen charity for this year is Help-

ing Hands in Tenerife, which lends its magnificent support to the Island’s less-fortunate children throughout the year.

The Premier League section attracted entries from most of the elite players and, after nearly four hours of intense battle, a flurry of high scores, check-outs and maximums, we were left with two men who will surely give us a cracking final: Mick from Bar 180 A and Xtreme Sports Bar’s Tom. There was an excellent 25-player turn-out from Division One and, again, most of the bighitters were present.

The Peacocks are flying (sorry) and they were good value for their 8-4 win over Toscales A. They could yet pick up the TPT Plate at the end of the season.

The top sides both won but in contrasting fashion. Gaffers A were always in control at the much-improved La Caña, coming through 9-3.

Their talisman, Ian, has returned to the UK and it will be interesting to see how they cope without him, especially with Exiles A right on their tail.

TENERIFE broadcasting history will be made on Monday lunchtime as Oasis Fm broadcasts exclusive live commentary of the FA Cup quarter final reply from Stamford Bridge.

Oasis Fm have teamed up with talkSPORT to bring the world’s greatest cup competition to Canarian airwaves.

The deal will see live commentary from pitchside for all the remaining FA Cup matches including the final from Wembley Stadium on May 11th.

And the groundbreak-

ing coverage starts with a barnstormer as Chelsea host Manchester United. The first match finished 2-2 at Old Trafford as Chelsea fought back from two goals down, and nearly won the tie with the last kick of the match. Both sides are in Premier League action on Saturday before the lunchtime kick off on Easter Monday.

Oasis Fm’s coverage, hosted by Adi Benson, begins at 12 noon before linking up with commentators Sam Matterface and Stan Collymore.

Memorial Trophy – the final showdowns!

Four rounds were required to be played to reach the final, so consistency was needed. No surprise then that two of the stand-out darters over the past 10 months made it through.

The final will see last

season’s winner, Nathan, from Ourplace Naturals, defend his crown against Daniel, of Palms Sports Bar A. Another one to look forward to!

Division Two has been incredibly competitive this year, and you could have thrown a blanket over the entrants for this section. There were some really close matches, and some very good darts, I must say.

So well done to Jamie, of Bar 180 C, who has a final showdown against Elvis, otherwise known as Dave, from La Caña Lancers.

The 16 ladies who entered their section also gave us plenty of thrills and spills, and I’m pret-

ty sure they enjoyed themselves, judging by the noise they were making!

Again, it was difficult to predict the finalists. But after getting through three tough rounds, the winning ladies were Anna, of Bar Amistad, and Trap Door’s Sarah.

It will be an emotional night for Sarah, but I am sure she will have plenty of support.

A special mention to Debbie and Ray, of Nauta Bar, for their excellent hospitality throughout the evening.

So, it promises to be another fantastic presentation night at Showtime, Las Americas next Friday (5th April).

Great darts, entertainment and superb hospitality are the key words, and it just seems to get better every year!
