THIS Sunday sees the shops in the Island’s capital, Santa Cruz, open for the first time.

A number of retailers have been crying out

for this for many years, but there are others, however, yet to be convinced. Cruise-ship passengers who stop at the port for the day have long bemoaned the fact that there is little to do on a Sunday.

Life for evil dad!

The City of Santa Cruz, together with the Government of the Canary Islands and the Tenerife Cabildo, have reported that 1,700 companies in the capital have joined to open on the first Sunday.

Santa Cruz are A sporting newsletter open on Sundays for Arona

Continued from front. explained at a press conference that the shops would be open between 11am and 7pm and that there would be 11 points throughout the city with various activities taking place. Bermudez noted that the aim of the additional opening was “better” consumption and “keeping” jobs, and to demonstrate, he said that Santa Cruz was “more alive than ever”. Florentino Guzman, Councillor and Head of the Development Corporation, said that the Sunday openings would continue until the end of the year and stressed that it was an initiative “to, for and from the trade.” Guzman added that the forecast was for over 5,000 citizens to visit the city, especially for the shops. This Sunday there will be three music stages, one of young artists,

another with ethnic music and the third occupied by a DJ. There will also be a book fair and craft fair. Gustavo Matos, Director General of Trade and Consumer Affairs of the Canary Islands, praised the initiative, saying: “Santa Cruz has never ceased to be fashionable. “The success of the activity would not be possible without support from traders.” To support the inaugural opening, a

number of events have been organised to help bring the streets alive, under the banner “Come to Santa Cruz”. The Municipal Museum of Fine Arts continues to hold a series of free concerts of classical music by young performers. And, the photo exhibition Turismundi will exhibit the work of six Canarian photographers in the art room at Parque Garcia Sanabria. The exhibition has

been organised by the Canary Islands Government and will be open to the public for a month. Carlos Alonso, the Cabildo’s Economic VicePresident, along with Economic Development and Trade Minister Efraín Medina, said the additional activity would “contribute to the revitalisation of the business of the capital”. Forthright Tenerife Tourism Minister Carlos Alonso said: “The shopowners say that it’s not worth opening on a Sunday as there is no custom. But there is no custom as everything is closed, so it’s a vicious circle.” Public transport will also be increased, and the Metropolitan tram line 1’s frequency improves from 15 minutes to 12 minutes until 6pm. Another attraction for shoppers will be free parking at the exchange for bus/tram users for four hours.

ARONA Council is publishing a monthly digital newsletter dedicated to sport. It will feature the most relevant events taking place in the south.

A spokesman said: “The main objective is to inform the population of the sporting achievements of our

athletes, and the announcement of sporting events taking place in the area.” With an international running stadium in Las Americas (open to everyone) a 50m heated swimming pool at Los Cristianos (just 1.50 euros to swim there) and football pitches galore, the publishers should never be short of content. AENA relations not good THE Tenerife Cabildo last Monday requested the immediate resignation of the regional director of the Airport Authority, Mario Otero. The agreement was adopted by the Governing Council chaired by Tenerife President, Ricardo Melchior. The reason behind this decision is for his "contempt" against the

institution. It’s motivated by a series of mishaps arising over months, culminating with the "unspeakable treatment" which the Cabildo received regarding the welcome activities of the first British Airways flight which arrived on Friday 29th March. Tourism Minister, Carlos Alonso, explained that this new route, which is "good news for the island, is now a reality thanks to the work of the Ca-

bildo for many months. "However, the regional directorate of AENA has prevented us from doing the activities planned to welcome this flight as it deserves, even unanswered repeated requests in this regard during the past week." “In contrast, the treat-

Furious health unions threaten strike action SPANISH unions, acting for the country’s doctors and nurses, have threatened the Government with a series of strikes if their “issues” are not tackled.

man, and they will even consider legal action if Ministry of Health chief Ana Mato continues to sidestep “issues relating to their employment conditions”. Healthcare staff maintain they are working long hours for no pay because of a lack of numbers. They also complain that they are struggling to provide a quality medical service

with extremely limited resources, because of public-funding cutbacks. Among other sources of discontent for doctors and nurses are the mass redundancies, long waiting lists for patients, wage cuts and far less investment in the Spanish Health Service, as well as regular privatisation threats, especially in Madrid. At least 14,000 fewer

nurses were employed in the country in 2011, compared with 2009, and while there were no nurses out of work two years ago, there are now 18,000 on the dole. The unions have also pinpointed Mato’s “constant failure” to respond to their requests for negotiations over the state of the Health Service, and staff conditions.

Unemployment THE number of unemployed in Spain has fallen in Spain for the month of March. Nationally registered unemployment fell by 4,979 people in March from the previous month, bringing the total number of unemployed to 5,035,243 unemployed, bolstered by the jobs in the service sector for Easter no doubt.

The Ministry of Employment highlighted that the reduction in March is the first of its kind since 2008 and contrasts “significantly” with the data of March 2012, when unemployment rose by 38,769 people. However, on-year unemployment the figure has increased by 284,376 people, 5.99%. The Secretary of State for Employment, Engra-

SPAIN’S Official State Gazette has recently published a resolution creating the new National Office for International Taxation (ONFI) operational from this week.

Based in Madrid, the ONFI will operate under the Department of Inspection. The new specialised unit will be responsible for producing a centralised action plan for international taxation. It will be tasked with scheduling, promoting and coordinating inspection activity related to international taxation, carried out by the central and regional units. The body is designed to strengthen the resources of the Spanish Tax Office for combating international tax fraud. The unit will focus on international relatedparty transactions, or fixed transfer prices be-

cia Hidalgo, highlighted in the statement that in March again the pace of job losses in annual terms has slowed. In the Canary Islands the number of people out of work increased by just 198 in March. Throughout the islands there are 291,672 unemployed, 7,973 more compared to the same time last year. According to the lat-

Línea Directa is giving away up to 300 euros LÍNEA DIRECTA Aseguradora is the insurer of choice for foreign residents in Spain. Since 1998, it has offered all its services in both English and German, including the purchase of the policy, handling claims, forwarding documents and 24-hour road assistance. How does it work? It’s very easy. For each person purchasing car or home insurance who has been recommended

by a Línea Directa customer, the company will give 30 euros to both the current policyholder and the new customer. To qualify for this offer, the new customer must call the company with the name and ID number (NIE or passport) of the person who recommended Línea Directa and, if the policy is finally signed, both parties will receive

the money in 45 days. The offer is limited to a maximum of 10 people per customer, which could result in a profit of up to 300 euros - a considerable amount in the current economic crisis. There’s obviously been a piece of research released this week as there are numerous articles about class in the media. The funniest, in my opinion, was in the Daily Mail, listing a number of material possessions and services from ipads to cleaners. Basically, the more you had the better your position in society. But I also stumbled across The Great British class calculator on the BBC’s website; a quick online test of five questions that tells you in which class bracket you reside. It’s all come about as the traditional British social divisions of upper, middle and working class apparently was out of date for today’s society, no longer reflecting modern occupations or lifestyles. The BBC teamed up with sociologists from leading universities to analyse the modern British class system. They surveyed more than 161,000 people and came up with a new model made up of seven groups. The Great British Class Survey was designed and the data analysed by Professors Mike Savage and Fiona Devine and their teams at the London School of Economics and the Universities of York and Manchester It found a new model of seven social classes ranging from the elite at the top to a “precariat” - the poor, precarious proletariat - at the bottom. Class has traditionally been defined by occupation, wealth and education. But this research argues that this is too simplistic, suggesting that class

has three dimensions - economic, social and cultural. The BBC Lab UK study measured economic capital income, savings, house value and social capital - the number and status of people someone knows. The study also measured cultural capital, defined as the extent and nature of cultural interests and activities. The new classes are defined as: Elite - the most privileged group in the UK. Established middle class - the second wealthiest,. Technical middle class - a small, distinctive new class group which is prosperous but scores low for social and cultural capital. Distinguished by its social isolation and cultural apathy. New affluent workers - a young class group which is socially and culturally active, with middling levels of economic capital Traditional working class - Its members have reasonably high house values, explained by this group having the oldest average age at 66 Emergent service workers - a new, young, urban group which is relatively poor but has high social and cultural capital Precariat, the poorest, most deprived class, scoring low for social and cultural capital I was classified within the emergent service worker. Go to www.bbc. co.uk/news/magazine quite fun. Until next week…

New treaty to avoid a double taxation THE Spanish Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Federico Trillo, and the British Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, David Gauke, signed the new treaty between the Kingdom of Spain and the United Kingdom of Great Britain to avoid double taxation and prevent personal income and wealth tax evasion. When it comes into effect (within three months of its ratification), this treaty will replace the agreement signed in London on 21 October 1975 between Spain and the United

Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, to avoid double taxation and prevent personal income and wealth tax evasion. (“Official State Gazette” of 18 November 1976). The new treaty updates the text of the former document, which had become out-of-date in certain regards due to the considerable period of time that had elapsed since it first came into effect. This update has led to the text being adapted to both the requirements arising from

current economic and trade relations between Spain and the UK, and the successive changes that have been made to the OECD’s Model Agreement on double taxation. A response has thus been given to the main problems that the previous treaty was unable to resolve, including the treatment of residents not domiciled in the United Kingdom and trusts. The new agreement means a considerable reduction of sourcebased taxation, establishing exclusive residence-based taxa-

tion for those dividends derived from majority shareholdings, as well as for interest payments and fees. Furthermore, it includes an arbitration clause for the resolution of any conflict that may arise from applying the new agreement. Spain is thus moving forward in its commitment to renegotiate all those agreements that, due to the passing of time and the strong economic relations maintained with certain countries, need to be adapted to the new status quo.

Princess Cristina faces court grilling

A MALLORAN court will this month question Spain’s Princess Cristina over a corruption case involving her husband, the Duke of Palma. The court in Palma, views the 47-year-old daughter of King Juan Carlos as a suspect and will grill her on 27th April. The infamous case is based on claims that her husband, Inaki Urdangarin, and his former business partner, Diego Torres, siphoned some 5 million euros (£4.25m) of public funds to their own companies. Princess Cristina and her husband are accused of creaming off money paid by regional governments to stage sports and tourism events to the non-profit-making Noos Institute, of which the Duke was chairman between 2004-2006. The Duke, who has never been charged with any crime and who maintains his innocence, attempted to distance his wife and the rest of the royals from his business dealings when questioned in court in February. But his former business partner then provided the judge with leaked emails, appear-

ing to show that the Duke consulted his wife, a member of the Noos Institute board, regularly about the organisation’s affairs. The princess, youngest daughter of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, was a member of the1988 Spanish Olympic sailing team in Seoul. She married Inaki Urdangarin in 1997 and together, the couple have four children. They moved to Washington in 2009 when the Duke became executive director of the US subsidiary of Spanish telecommunications firm Telefonica. They were living there when the corruption allegations emerged, but returned to Barcelona last August. The summons will be seen as extremely damaging to the royal fam-

ily, whose popularity is waning, according to recent polls. An opinion poll published last month showed almost 57% of Spaniards felt the king should abdicate in fa-

vour of Prince Felipe, his 45-year-old son. The 75-year-old king is credited with steering Spain to democracy following the death of dictator Francisco Franco in 1975. But his standing has been hit by the corruption case, and his luxury elephant-hunting safari he took in Africa last year during record numbers of jobless in Spain. He is currently recovering from surgery to his lower spine - his seventh operation in three years. A palace spokesman said: “The royal household does not comment in any way on judicial decisions.”

Islas Airways on way back THE once bankrupt airline Isla Airways looks set to return again this month to the Canaries.

The judge handling the bankruptcy process has released about three million euros previously seized giving the company sufficient liquidity to

resume most of its routes. According to reports the airline is very close to finalising the formalities required by the Aviation Safety Agency to re-operate in the Canaries. Sources suggest that its fleet of planes (six) will be once again be airborne this month, just six months after their activities

were suspended in October 2012 due to serious economic problems. The first steps to recovery began at the end of last year with a creditors meeting; now a judge has released funds and lifted embargoes. Isla Airways plans to reinstate the island routes but as yet no schedule has been set.

Plant pills A PLANT has been found in the Canary Islands that can be used to combat organ rejection and treat bone marrow patients. Researchers at the Institute of Agricultural Research Canario (ICIA), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Water of the Canary Islands, in collaboration with other Spanish research centers have carried out the study.

The work carried out so far has revealed that the species traditionally used as fodder in the Archipelago, contains psoralens, a class of compounds belonging to the group of furanocoumarins, synthesized in the laboratory they have a medicinal use, being used, along with UV light to treat various skin diseases such as vitiligo, psoriasis and mycosis fungoides. This project began in 2010 and will conclude later this year. It aims to detect plant material with high content of these substances, given their pharmacological

interest, maximise production and facilitate extraction processes of pure products available for medical use. The Islands have a high plant biodiversity thus the reason for the major study of work. Besides the common species, present in the Mediterranean basin and Macaronesia, which presents unique characteristics in the Canary Islands, there are two varieties endemic to the Canary Islands - Bituminaria bituminous one in Lanzarote and one in Tenerife, in the areas and peaks of (VilaflorLas Cañadas)

Wiggins back on Teide! BRADLEY WIGGINS, Britain’s 2012 Tour de France and Olympic gold medallist, is back in town. Londoner Wiggins chose Tenerife last year to polish up his act before his two great triumphs concentrating on hillclimbing which, he acknowledged, was his weakest point. His daily slogs up Teide paid off handsomely in Paris and London, and he will be hoping it stands him in good stead again this year, although a pledge to Chris Froome means he will do hid utmost to help his Sky Team partner take the Tour de France honours this time. The superstar pair Froome finished second in Paris after giving Wiggins tremendous back-up throughout last year’s Tour - and their team-mates, checked into the Parador de Las

Cañadas hotel, on the slopes of El Teide, on Monday for a fortnight of tortuous climbing. The team’s target this year is to clinch next month’s Giro d’Italia,

rated second only to the Tour de France, for Wiggins, and then the latter for Froome. Wiggins has already tasted the Tenerife altitude this year,

bidding to improve his acceleration after long, intense efforts on the sustained climbs along the flanks of Teide in February. “We’re working more

on the explosivity in the climbs,” he said. “I don’t like it. It’s the worst part of training. But sometimes the stuff you don’t enjoy doing is the stuff that works.”

He added tellingly: “If you only do what you like doing, you have the Bradley Wiggins of 2010. “This year, I am training more than racing, and I almost prefer the training camps to the racing. You learn from the previous year. This year has been harder because of the stuff we did last year. “But it’s a continual thing, and I never imagined three years ago the training we do now.” Wiggins, who moves on to Italy’s Giro del Trentino (16-19th April) after his Tenerife exploits, is on his fifth training trip to the Island in 2½ years. He is a time-trial expert - the world’s best, as proven in the London Games - but he knows the major tours will always be won and lost in the mountains. And that’s why he and Froome are almost certain to be returning here before embarking on the Big One, in June and July.

Drug-trafficker from Columbia is arrested THE Guardia Civil have arrested a man in Tenerife this week wanted on drug-trafficking charges in the USA.

The Colombian national, John Mauricio Z.F, 33 was arrested under an international warrant, issued in New York, following a stake-out in Calle Viera y Clavijo in the municipality of Adeje, which eventually led to his arrest. The accused is wanted in connection with a drug-smuggling operation used to ferry large quantities of drugs between El Dorado International Airport in Bogota to New York and Miami. He apparently knew the authorities in America were on to him and so tried to ‘disappear’ in Tenerife in an area of the island with a large South-

Page 8

American population. Police believe he may have been in hiding in Tenerife for as long as six months. Following a court appearance, he was ordered to be remanded in custody pending his extradition to the United States. The arrest was part of a large police operation carried out in Colombia,

Spain and Panama, as a result the authorities have dismantled two criminal organisations involved in sending consignments of heroin from Colombia to New York. In the course of the operations fourteen people in total were arrested, twelve in Colombia, one in Panama and one in Tenerife.

10 million in tax to be returned THE Tax Office (Hacienda) expects this year to receive nearly 20 million tax returns under the current income tax campaign which began this week. The tax returns relate to the past year 2012, but the estimated number of returns is similar to that of 2011. It’s estimated that nearly 15 million of those submitted will receive some rebate amounting to 10,665 million euros, representing a decrease of 4.5% compared to the previous year. The Secretary of State for Finance, Miguel Ferre, explained that both the decline in tax

returns and the amount owed as a result of the tax increase which came into force last

year will all play a part. The tax return process runs from now until the 1st July. The director of

the Tax Office, Beatriz Viana, highlighted in a press conference that on the opening day for

returns, Tuesday, a total of 40,956 taxpayers had already submitted their details, in the first hour.

By the close of business on Tuesday the Treasury had confirmed 151,502 drafts of the 2012 income tax return. These figures exceed those of 2011. To avoid saturation problems similar to those that occurred a year ago, the AEAT (tax office) have increased by 40% the processing capacity of their computer system, during the first few days of the campaign. The first leg of the campaign, which started on Tuesday, allows taxpayers who wish to obtain the draft of their fiscal data through the web. A number of individuals who have requested it will receive their information by post.

Buy and sell in comfort now at Tenerife Auction Rooms TENERIFE Auction Rooms, the centre of attraction in Las Chafiras on alternative Saturdays, offers much more than a simple sales base. True, hundreds of people attend the Friday viewings (9.30am-5pm), with around 300 actually attending the auction the following morning from 10am onwards. But you can also get a free valuation by experts on your goods on any day if you take them along to their spacious headquarters. And there

Page 10

is no necessity to include them in the sales. The company is next to Auto Decoracion, down the first right turn before the bendy road, which takes you down to Amarilla Golf. The auction, which has been running since 2009, is owned by 37-yearold Rex Anderson and his family, with new auctioneer Dave Penney at the helm on Saturdays. Dave is no stranger to the second-hand goods scenario, having run Universal Exports and Aladdin’s Cave in

Buzanada for years. Now, for the first time, he is working in collaboration with Rex, supplying brand-new, quality beds to the Auction Rooms. So if you can’t find what you’re looking for during the auction, have a mosey around the comfy beds’ department. There’s something for everyone who goes along to the sales and Rex, who loves the buzz on auction Saturdays, says: “We mainly get household items from residents. “When people move

out here, they tend to have a mass clear-out, especially if the contents they inherit are not to their taste. “And people who rent out properties often come in looking for various items to furnish their places.” There’s a lot of banter there on Saturdays, and even if you are not intending to buy some people change their minds when that certain something pops up unexpectedly – it’s well worth a visit, if only for the craic!

Annaleece reserves a brand-new holiday By Maggie Lennard

WITH three contestants already in the final, heat four of Tenerife Loves Karaoke 2013 took us back to el Mirador, but this time we were at Springers Bar. The judges representing Oasis Fm for this heat were Jo Rham (account manager) and Jamie Drew (presenter). Representing the bar, we had partner Connor and staff member Ange. It was no surprise to find the venue full upon our arrival, and the contestant list was also full; we even had a ‘reserve’ list of three, hoping for a no-show (or three). First to go was Tenerife veteran karaoke singer Brian, who chose Maroon 5’s Move Like Jagger. It was a shaky but enjoyable start to the evening. Kim was second to perform, and she did a very good job with Alicia Keys’ Empire State of Mind (part 2). Our first of two Adams took the stage next. Adam See chose the Arctic Monkeys I Bet That You Look Good on the Dancefloor, and, despite his unusual selection, the song was well delivered and received. Chris Mulvaney was next to perform and he chose what appears to be a TLK favourite for this year: Labe Siffre’s Something Inside So Strong. Chris showed real emotion, and was not lacking quality, either, in his performance. Laura, our No5 singer, gave a strong rendition of Red, by Daniel Merriweather, and the first of two Pauls brought the qualifying round to its halfway mark. Dressed more for Neil Diamond, it was a huge surprise to the crowd when Paul N launched

into Metallica’s Enter Sandman, complete with air guitar. It was evident that he was enjoying his six minutes of fame, and the crowd appeared to like it, too. Ellie opened the second half of this qualifying round, and in her third attempt at getting into the final this year, she took on Britney Spears’ I’m Not a Girl, Not yet a Woman. It was performed well, and with control, although I have heard her produce better in previous rounds at both Harvey’s and Our Place. Adam M went next and chose to perform one of the biggestselling singles of 2012 in Fun’s We are Young. It is a hard song to attempt, but Adam coped well, and it was another favourite with the crowd. In the absence of one registered competitor, we had to turn to the reserve list. One had already left,

another (as it turns out) was ineligible, leaving holiday-maker Annaleece to go next. It was evident from the first note that this young lady had some voice, and her rendition of Mariah Carey’s Hero drew whoops of approval. Following Annaleece was Katja (who had wanted to sing Labe Siffre, but was pipped to the song by Chris at registration - a cautionary tale to register your song choice early). It did not seem to affect her in the slightest, and a change to Redneck Woman by Gretchen Wilson became a barn-storming (barnraising?) rendition, complete with an impromptu ‘almost’ line dance. Game on! Rafael, a TLK 2012 finalist, was the penultimate contestant. Rafael had travelled down from La Laguna (fortunately it was

Easter, so the nursery school teacher was able to make the journey). Adele’s Someone Like You was delivered beautifully, and with delicate voice control and intonation.

Paul O was last to perform. He entered at our first heat at Harvey’s (in fact he was the first to sing in the competition this year), and he was itching to have another go. The Calling’s Wherever You Will Go was his choice, and he gave another solid performance. It was only afterwards that I was told Paul had suffered a stroke just five weeks before the first round, making his performance even more impressive in retrospect. So, who would go through? It didn’t take long to find out. The three finalists were Rafael, Annaleece and Katja. It took just a few moments to load up the sing-off tracks and Rafael was drawn first. If there had been a roof on the terrace, he would have blown it off with a sparking version of Tina Turner’s The Best. Katja went second, and performed Bonnie Raitt’s I Can’t Make You Love Me beautifully. Last up was Annaleece, who chose a Gloria Estefan song. Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me swung along (as did the

audience) and brought the competition to a close. It just remained for the scores to be collated. Third place went to Rafael, second was Katja, meaning that heat four provided our first winning holidaymaker in Annaleece, whose father Brett now has to decide how many of the family will be coming back for the final. Our next heat is on Thursday 11th April at The Pub in Torviscas, bringing the heat stage to its halfway point. The remaining heats are as follows 18th April: The Brewer’s Droop, Las Americas 27th April: Clouseau’s, Palm Mar 2nd May: Kandi Lounge, Puerto Colon 9th May: Terrace Bar, Amarilla Golf 16th May: Dreamers Bar, Los Cristianos 23rd May: Leonardo’s, Las Americas You can enter any of these heats by registering at the venue, by calling 902 232 102 in office hours, by email to info@oasisfm.com or by private message at the TLK Facebook page. Remember, ONE winner will walk away with a grand in his/her hand at the final on 1st June

Life for evil dad!

Wicked trio of ‘devious liars’ face years behind bars MICK PHILPOTT, the evil father whose actions killed six of his children when he torched their Derby home, was sentenced to life imprisonment yesterday (Thursday). He was told by Mrs Justice Thirlwall that he would serve a minimum 15 years, while his wife Mairead and their best friend, Paul Mosley, were each jailed for 17 years, and would have to serve half. All three had been found guilty of manslaughter two days earlier, and in her sentencing remarks, the judge labelled Philpott “the driving force behind this shockingly-dangerous enterprise”. Barristers representing the Philpotts had told the judge they were “good” parents and that the children had been loved and “happy”. But jurors learned during the trial that 56-year-old Philpott, an unemployed scrounger living off huge benefits, had plotted to set his house alight to frame his former mistress Lisa Willis, with whom he was fighting a custody battle over their children. If he gained custody, he hoped Miss Willis would return to live with him, but the judge said: “You

could not stand the fact that she had crossed you. “You were determined to make sure she came back, and you began to put together your plan.” The judge said the children were subjected to a terrifying ordeal, adding: “Their terror was the price they were going to pay for your callous selfishness. In fact, they paid with their six young lives.” As he was taken down, Philpott’s sister, Dawn Bestwick, shouted: “Die, Mick, die” from the public gallery. The trial heard that Philpott, his wife and his mistress had shared the three-bedroom council house in Allenton with 11 of their children, until Miss Willis moved out in February 2012. Jade Philpott, 10, John, nine, Jack, eight,

Star Harry in a hurry HARRY JUDD, a musician with top pop group McFly, has been diagnosed with a heart condition.

The band’s drummer, who won the 2011 series of Strictly Come Dancing, is in training for the Virgin London Marathon on 21st April. But he has an ectopic heartbeat, otherwise

Page 14

known as wandering pacemaker, caused by over-training for the event. The 27-year-old, who is raising funds for charities Teenage Cancer Trust and Eyes Alight, revealed the news on Twitter, saying: “It proves I’m even pushing as hard as possible for the marathon. He continued: “It’s nothing to worry about, but just means I have to chill out a bit.”

Jesse, six, and Jayden, five, died on the morning of the fire on 11th May 2012. Mairead’s son from a previous relationship, 13-year-old Duwayne - considered to be his own by her husband died later in hospital. Dawn Bestwick said outside court: “The sentences are a victory for the children, who can now rest in peace.” .As the trial concluded on Tuesday, the trio were labelled “devious liars”, who made no attempt to save the sleeping children after torching the house. Steve Cotterill, Assistant Chief Constable of Derbyshire Police, said: “Any parent would have paid the ultimate sacrifice to save them. “Mick Philpott did not. I have pretty much given up trying to under-

stand his behaviour. ” Detectives were suspicious about the Philpotts within 24 hours of the fatal blaze. Mr Cotterill met the couple just once, at the dramatic press conference five days after the fire. The officer said: “I agonised over whether it was right to sit by the side of him. He entered the room in a jovial manner, like an excited child. “He was the father of six children who had died. I didn’t see a great deal of upset. It added to suspicions. “He was caught unawares. He thought he was going to enjoy it, but, in a way, the press conference exposed him. “What was lacking for me was some heartfelt appeal in relation to

finding the killer of his six children. “He praised everyone who had tried to rescue them, but did not mention who had started the fire.” The police chief added: “In 30 years as a police officer, I have never seen anybody suffering the magnitude of that loss deal with it in the way he did. “I would have expected him to be completely destroyed. He wasn’t. It was shameful. “All three are devious liars. They are guilty of a plan that was hatched to set fire to that house. It was an evil, stupid, shameful act. “It’s difficult not to take an instant dislike to Mick Philpott. It’s a natural reaction of most people. He is a very unpredictable individual.”

Just seven days after the deaths, the seemingly grief-stricken father donned a cowboy hat for a pub karaoke and performed the Elvis song Suspicious Minds, with the opening line, “We’re caught in a trap”, to sobbing wife Mairead. Mairead’s father, Jimmy Duffy, said when the trial ended: “Who would do this to their children? I keep seeing the six white coffins and I still can’t believe what’s happened. I’m still a bit puffy-eyed. But the children are with the angels now.” Det Supt Kate Meynell, of Derbyshire Police, said the Philpotts and Mosley had “lied throughout the investigation and court case”. She added: “There were plenty of opportunities to admit their guilt, but they never did and persisted with their denials. “This has been an incredibly tragic case to investigate and the sentences bring this difficult inquiry to a close.” Meanwhile, police say they will “thoroughly” investigate an allegation that Philpott raped a woman several years ago. She made the allegation after the death of Philpott’s children, but police decided to wait until the end of the manslaughter trial before investigating the complaint further.

Don’t be fooled by fuel figures NEW-CAR buyers have been warned that the official fuel economy does not always tally with the vehicle’s actual performance. Chas Hallett, Editorin-Chief of consumer magazine What Car? says: “Expecting high fuel economy and getting the opposite can double a household’s fuel expense. It is vitally important for consumers to buy the right car.” One “misconception”, he adds, is that smaller cars give better fuel economy.

“But that’s not the case. If you use a smallengined car for long motorway runs every day, it will not be that economical, and a vehicle with a larger engine would be better.” Latest research by What Car? revealed that 95.5% of cars do not match the UK Government’s economy figures, with an average miles-per-gallon shortfall of 17%. So-called city cars and superminis have the biggest disparity. Despite advertised often as being efficient, city

cars had fuel economy shortfall of 23.3%, while the difference for superminis was almost 25%. The lowest shortfall in What Car? tests came from SUVs, at 12.9% below the Government average. The magazine reviewed more than 500 new cars on real roads to arrive at its results - in contrast to the official research, which is conducted in laboratories. What Car? testing also showed that some vehicles did actually

deliver the expected mpg while others exceeded it. The Mazda 3 outperformed the published average mpg by almost 10%, while the Nissan 370Z exceeded it by 6.8%. The magazine launched an online tool to check the fuel economy of cars following complaints from readers about the efficiency of their own cars. Since its launch, the What Car? True MPG app has been used over one million times.

More fraud on the cards! CARD-SKIMMING devices attached to transport ticket machines are on the increase in some European countries - but the UK does not appear to have been affected. A report published by the European ATM Security Team (East) in March, said that five out of 23 European countries reported higher figures, and it also revealed a rise in skimmers on parkingticket meters in two countries. Criminals usually attach their card skimmers to cash machines, so they can lift bank-card details. Pay-at-pump petrol stations, which are unmanned, have also been targeted in six countries. The report did not identify individual countries, but France, Germany, Russia and

the UK were among those supplying information about cardfraud activity to East. British Transport Police told the BBC that while it was aware of the issue on rail ticket machines, it was “not a major problem” in the UK. The UK Cards

CANADIAN pop star Justin Bieber is so popular in Norway that some schools have rescheduled halfterm exams so their pupils can attend his concerts in Oslo.

The 19-year-old, who caused havoc in London recently by going on stage two hours late, will be performing there on April 16th and 17th, and the authorities fear some kids in remote schools will skip exams to see him. His free concert in Oslo last year resulted

Association says fraud losses on cards in Britain alone totalled £185m in the first six months of 2012. Once the card data has been copied, fraudsters can then get a cloned card made containing the information of the original account holder. Many European

countries have adopted EMV (Europay, MasterCard and Visa) card security - known as chip-and-pin - but the US has resisted so far. American cash machines still read data from the magnetic stripe on the back of an inserted card, so even

those with a chip-andpin have a stripe as well. Skimmer- scammers, who steal card data from European ATM users, tend to ship the stolen card data to buyers or coconspirators in the US, where it is encoded on to fabricated cards and

used to pull cash out of ATMs in America. Security expert Brian Krebbs wrote in a blog post: “The latest report from East continues to emphasise that most card fraud, stemming from skimming incidents in Europe is, in fact, perpetrated outside of Europe.”

Norway schools pander to Bieber’s fever-pitch fans in dozens of injuries as teenage girls fought to get a better view of him.

Now, five schools in the Alesund region 230 miles from Oslo have decided to switch

days to accommodate his Norweigian fans. Kristin Halvorsen, Norway’s Education

Minister, has no problems with their decision. “I am concerned that students should be concentrating when they take tests,” she said. “The local schools have a responsibility to schedule their exams, and if they think there is any reason to change the dates, they have authority to do so.” She added: “We’ve all been 14 years old and know that interests can be intense.”

Beatles’ fan peppered is with money! THE Beatles are still raking in fortunes for others, even though they disbanded in the early Seventies.

A signed copy of their best-selling Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album went under the hammer for a phenomenal £191,000 in Dallas, Texas, and was snapped up by an unnamed buyer. The UK Parlophone copy of the album – valued at around £19,700, .includes a high-gloss cover and vinyl gatefold sleeve, and it is believed to have been autographed by all four Beatles. The previous record for a signed Beatles album cover was the £98,600 paid for a copy of 1964’s Meet the Beatles LP in 2011. Heritage Auctions, which ran the current sale, described the Sgt Pepper lot as “one of the most spectacular jewels

in our auction”. Beatles expert Perry Cox said before the auction: “It, takes something extraordinarily special to excite me. But I consider this to be one of the top two items of Beatles memorabilia I’ve ever seen - the other being a signed copy of Meet The Beatles.” The Sgt Pepper album was regarded as The Beatles’ finest work. It topped the UK album chart for 27 weeks and was a worldwide hit, selling an estimated 32 million copies.

Hawk-Eye is out as FIFA plump for new goal-line tech F O O T B A L L’ S world governing body have shunned Britain’s popular HawkEye system in favour of a German company’s goalline technology for next year’s World Cup in Brazil.

But only if the German company’s GoalControl-4D passes FIFA’s stringent tests during this summer’s Confederations Cup in June. The camera-based, ball-tracking system uses 14 high-speed cameras l around the pitch and directed at both goals. If successful at the 16-match Confederations Cup in June, it will be installed at the 2014 World Cup stadia. FIFA’s rule-making panel approved goalline technology last July, and President Sepp Blatter pushed for it to be used in Brazil after England midfielder Frank Lampard’s disallowed goal - the ball crossing the line by a good yard - against Germany at the 2010 World

Cup. GoalControl was selected ahead of three other companies, including British-based Hawk-Eye, another camera system which was considered favourite. It is already used in tennis and cricket, and its English parent company was bought by World Cup sponsor Sony Corp before it began FIFA-endorsed testing in 2011. All four systems met FIFA’s demand that a

signal is transmitted to the referee’s watch within one second if a goal should be awarded. A FIFA statement read: “While all four companies had previously met the stringent technical requirements of our quality programme, the final decision was based on criteria relating more specifically to the tournaments in Brazil. “This included the company’s ability to

adapt to local conditions, and the compatibility of each GLT (goalline technology) system in relation to FIFA match operations. “The respective bids were also judged on cost and project management factors, such as staffing and time schedules for installation. “The use of GoalControl-4D in Brazil is subject to a final installation test at each stadium where the system will be installed.”

Teenager ‘wrongly’ jailed for 40 years, but he won’t be paid a cent AN American teenager, sentenced to 28 consecutive life sentences for starting a deadly fire, has been released after 40 years.

There had been serious doubts in recent years about his conviction. But Louis Taylor, jailed at 16, chose to enter a “no contest” plea rather than continue the fight to clear his name fully, and he left prison immediately.

Taylor was arrested following an inferno which killed 29 people at the Pioneer Hotel in Tucson, Arizona, in December 1970. He told reporters outside the prison: “It’s a tale of two tragedies - the Pioneer Hotel fire and my conviction.” But the deal means he cannot sue the state for compensation - an option open to him had he been exonerated at a new trial. Taylor has continually professed his innocence, maintaining that he was wrongly convicted by an all-white jury, and

alleging that police failed to investigate other suspects. While the Pioneer Hotel was burning, Taylor was said to be helping people escape the flames before being arrested later that night. Even the presiding judge expressed scepticism about the conviction, and his lawyers believe they would have prevailed eventually at a new trial – which could have taken up to three years. Prosecutors, who still believe he is guilty,

said they would not be able to pursue a new conviction because of a lack of evidence and living witnesses. It was one of the worst fires in Arizona history, and many guests were trapped in their rooms as the flames engulfed the building. Tragically, the fire engine ladders were too short to reach the upper floors. Some people jumped to their deaths while others burned in their rooms. But most victims died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Salt is a prime-time killer! UP to 2.3 million worldwide heartrelated deaths were caused by excess salt in 2010, which amounted to 15% of the year’s total. Nearly one million of those who died were under 70, which confirms that salt-laden diets are killing many people in their prime. Men are most likely to die from this heart condition, as they comprise 60% of the deaths. Lead researcher Dr Dariush Mozaffarian, of Harvard Medical School, called for governments worldwide to encourage people to cut down on salt, saying: “It could, potentially, save millions of lives.” Experts already alert to the dangers of salt have warned diners to watch out for salt in restaurant food, takeaways and ready meals, as well as avoiding adding it at the table.

Victoria Taylor, the British Heart Foundation’s senior health dietician, said: “We know that eating too much salt is linked to high blood pressure, a risk factor for heart disease. “But you may not be aware of just how much salt is ending up on your plate. As well as steering clear of the salt shaker, we need to watch out for the salt that’s added

to the foods we buy, or order in restaurants. “Picking products now marked with a green traffic light for salt will help you to limit your intake.” British Public Health Minister Anna Soubry has already announced plans to cut Britain’s salt consumption by a quarter. She wants more food companies to sign up to a “responsibility deal”

to help cut the daily salt intake from a daily average of 8.1 grams to 6g. And cutting down on unhealthy snacks could also save millions of lives. The number of people adding salt at the table fell by more than a quarter in the five years following a 2003 public health campaign urging people to cut down, according to a recent

study. Salt use at the table accounts for 1520% of people’s total intake. Yet previous research showed that cutting back on salt and saturated fat in processed foods would save thousands of lives yearly, and save the NHS millions of pounds. Heart and circulatory disease is the UK’s biggest killer, claiming 180,000 lives a year, but 80% of premature heart

disease is avoidable by changes to diet, exercising and also giving up smoking. A Birmingham University report showed that cutting salt intake by just 0.1oz a day, or cutting trans fats - found in biscuits and cakes - by 0.7% would save up to £30m a year. The new US study, presented to the American Heart Association’s conference in New Orleans, found that 84% of the 2.3 million deaths were in low and middleincome countries. The highest proportion was in Ukraine and Russia, with the lowest rates in Qatar, Kenya and the United Arab Emirates. Researchers analysed 247 surveys of adult sodium intake between 1990 and 2010, taking into account age, gender, region and country, to determine how the amount of sodium consumed was affecting people’s risk of cardiovascular disease.

It’s time to get those skates on!

Live Arico news TEAM Live Arico raised 2,000 euros by running (using the term loosely) the Las Galletas Half-Marathon last year. It’s that time of year again and on Sunday (7th April), the team will be out in force, hoping for a repeat. Tony Bailey and Keith Freeland will be running competitively, while Live Arico committee members Sue Havenhand, Michaela Bridges and Kerry Railton will be covering the 10.8km distance dressed as BatMan, Robin and CatWoman. Surely, this spectacle deserves some sponsorship, so please pledge and/or sponsor in any of the Live Arico Charity shops, or Slippers Bar, Golf del Sur. Alternatively, use paypal to livearico@gmail.com And why not pop down to Las Galletas on Sunday and cheer them on. The race starts at 9am, so they should be bounding over the finish line round about 10.30am - on Monday (only joking!). Special benefit night Our fund-raiser to try to finance the tragic case of the three blind puppies, held in the Top Square, Golf del Sur last Saturday, was a huge success. Some fantastic entertainment was provided by Jo Cassidy, Robbie Dominic, Colin Stevens, Jan Munroe, Alfie B, and Caroline on the squeezebox, and it was magical to hear the singalong through the Square. Things got rather silly as Dave Slippers

and Sean Wren did a rendition of Good Gracious Me, and Pat and Gill sold a mountain of raffle tickets. A total of 740 euros was raised, boosted by an auction of original art, a cake by Shazaroo Homecrafts and a gorgeous pie from The TreeHouse, in Chayofa. The puppies’ appointment with the ophthalmologist had been postponed slightly, but we will keep you up to date next week. Great giveaway grief Sadly, a huge donation of food - some 2,660 kilos - paid for by our supporters, was turned away from the Fasnia Refuge last week. To try to turn a negative into a positive, we have added to it and will be giving away a whopping 6,000 kilos of food to other refuges on the Island, next Saturday (13th April), and K9, Apanot, Adepac, Esperanza de Sur, MADAT and many others will benefit, as well as recognising small, home-run refuges who could just do with a bit of help. It was also nice to be able to give away many bags of clothes from the Costa del Silencio shop, which we had to close down last week. The Island’s homeless should be okay for clothes for a while, and Cats Welfare stocked up on books for their market stall. We also gave away fixtures to other charity shops. Important phone numbers. How to Win the Grand National Channel 4, 20:00

The Grand National is the ultimate challenge in horse racing. To take part in it at all requires extraordinary dedication and bravery. This programme examines what it takes to win it. Drawing on the testimony of jockeys, and analysis of the anatomy of the horses, Mark Evans gets to grips with the race. His aim is to learn what qualities separate the winner from the alsorans. He looks at the race in forensic detail: first the adrenalinepumping start where 40 horses line up ready to charge, followed by the immense power they need to jump the nearly six-foot-high fences, then the precise combination of human balance and equine skill to land safely, and finally the power, will and endurance that decide the final sprint.

House, Sky Atlantic, 18:00

Meanwhile, attractive new recruit Dr Samira Terzi begins to cloud House's judgement.

Continuing his exploration of culinary combinations and pairings, Nigel Slater looks at the role of contrasting temperatures, to show how the marriage of something hot with something cold can turn a good dish into something really special. From a simple twist on the classic hot apple pie and ice cream, to a chip shop-inspired dish of sizzling fish with a lime and chilli 'vinegar', Nigel shows the role of hot and cold, and how it can be used to improve cooking.

Liam Neeson stars as former CIA operative Bryan Mills, who's desperate to track down his kidnapped daughter in Pierre Morel's Luc Besson-produced action-thriller. Mills' life hasn't panned out well; his dedication to the CIA wrecked his marriage and made him neglect his daughter Kim. Now, retired from the Agency, he wants to make things up to Kim. But to do so, he has to contend with his ex-wife's animosity and Kim's new step-father's wealth. So when he has an opportunity to advance Kim's pop star ambitions he jumps at the chance, even if that means her and a friend crossing the Atlantic tobrave 'the dangers of Europe'. As things turn out, he has a point: in Paris, the two girls are kidnapped by vicious Eastern European sex traffickers. As they are being abducted, Bryan tells one of the baddies, via Kim's mobile phone: 'I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you'. He subsequently does his best to make good on his promise, using all the violent tricks of the trade his time at the CIA taught him.

Catchphrase ITV1, 18.45 Classic game show Catchphrase is back, as the series that taught viewers to ‘say what they see’, makes a welcome return to ITV primetime with new host Stephen Mulhern. The nine-part series, which will include a celebrity special, will see three contestants go head-to-head each week in a bid to identify hidden, familiar phrases represented by state of the art 3D graphic animations. The pressure is higher than ever before as one contestant is eliminated from the competition after the first round, leaving the other two to battle it out in a bid to reach the final. Throughout the show, contestants will bank cash in exchange for Catchphrases they guess correctly ahead of their opponents, with the opportunity to scoop big money should they uncover the coveted bonus Catchphrase. One contestant will then face the new Super Catchphrase round for the chance to win a massive £50,000. All of the show’s most popular features are revived, including loveable mascot Mr Chips, the golden robot who appears sporadically throughout the Catchphrases. Celebrities confirmed to appear in a one-off celebrity special will be Coronation Street star Kym Lomas, I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! contestant Rosemary Shrager and Benidorm’s Steve Pemberton. John Kaye Cooper, ITV’s Controller of Entertainment, said: “We’re delighted that this highly popular classic game show is returning to ITV and once again give our viewers a chance to ‘say what they see’. Stephen will be presenting an updated and state of the art version of Catchphrase and we welcome its return to our schedules.” On hosting the revamped series, Stephen Mulhern said “I’m delighted and excited to be hosting the new look Catchphrase, a show I grew up watching. It’s a dream to present but I warn you now, if your family is anything like mine, it can get very competitive when you play along at home! BBC1, 21.00 For the first time on British television, a new BBC One documentary series, The Prisoners, follows offenders in jail, their release, and if they reoffend, their return behind prison doors. Filmed over a year, this first episode follows a group of repeat offenders from Holloway Prison, which holds over 400 female prisoners. Jayde is just 18 but has already been in jail six times. Stuck in a cycle of reoffending, she manages just two weeks outside before returning to Holloway. Crystal feels at home in prison; at 23 she has been a regular inmate at Holloway prison since she was 17. On release she returns to her estate, but fearing this environment will cause her to relapse, she leaves in order to address her problems. While each journey is different, nearly all share a shocking truth that many offenders feel more at home in prison than out.

Filmed around the clock at one of Britain’s busiest A&E departments at King’s College Hospital in south London, which this year celebrates its centenary, the series begins with a powerful episode about how our lives can change forever in the blink of an eye. In a shocking, random act of violence, a young woman is knocked to the ground, after being punched in the face by a stranger on her way home from work. Lying in the street, she’s fighting for her life when Andrew, a passer-by, finds her and calls 999. A&E doctor Des has worked at King’s for over five years and is rarely shocked by what he sees, but when the unidentified young woman arrives in Resus with life-threatening swelling on her brain, the impact is felt by him and the entire department. “People are unfortunately capable of doing the most awful things to one another, but people are also capable of doing some of the nicest and kindest things that you would never imagine would happen in a busy, urban area like Kings,” says Des. “So sometimes it’s the acts of kindness that surprise me more than the acts of cruelty.” Also in Resus is 12-year-old Tom. Hit by a car on his way home from school, he is airlifted to King’s by HEMS, the helicopter emergency medics. His mum Anna faces an agonizing wait as A&E Consultant Emer assesses the extent of damage to her son’s brain. “Children are inherently fit strong little creatures,” says Emer. “Children’s little bodies will compensate for a long time and they will hold it together and hold it together and hold it together and then crash…” Meanwhile, 90-year-old ex-circus performer Frank is in A&E after collapsing at home. News of his colourful past – including training bears and lifting horses - quickly travels amongst the staff as they try to determine what brought him to King’s. 24 Hours in A&E is a powerful, intimate - at times humorous, but ultimately heart-warming - portrait of modern Britain in all its diversity.

It is the final heat, and the last set of hopefuls pick up their knives and show off their culinary skills. Who will prove that they have what it takes to line up with the successful contestants who have already made it through? First, they must overcome the Invention Test, and prove that in only one hour they can deliver an amazing plate of food with no planning. No-one goes home after this, because they must next survive the extremely tricky Palate Test, which sees chef John Torode demonstrate a scallop and crab ravioli with a spiced prawn sauce. Without seeing the demo, the amateurs are given just a few minutes to taste this dish before being asked to write down exactly what it is in it, using their sense of smell, and palate. Then they are asked to recreate John's dish in just one hour - without a recipe. At the end of these two challenges, some of the hopefuls will have reached the end of their MasterChef journey.

Spring is sprung… By Sue McDonald WITH the amazing weather we have been experiencing lately, it is hard to tell that this is the end of Winter and the beginning of Spring. It is time to take a good look at your property and decide what you can do to brighten it up and make it look smarter and fresher. Often, because we are so used to our surroundings, we tend not to “see” them any more, so try to look at them with a fresh eye, as you would if you were a stranger. What would be your first impression? Could it be improved, or does it look a bit worn and tired (I know the feeling)? If you are a believer in spring cleaning, you will be moving everything around anyway, and you can see if your room can be laid out in a different way. Also, take a look at your curtains and throws, and see if a change is needed. Adding a dash of colour can lift a whole room for little expenditure. A coat of paint is the cheapest and most effective way of brightening up a room. Remember the theory of colour: dark, intense colours make rooms appear smaller, and light colours make them look bigger. If you have had your

mattresses for several years, perhaps it is time to change it – after all, a good night’s sleep is important for all. Our best seller is a model which has a sprung centre, and 6cm of visco elastic. This is an ideal combination of firmness at the core, and a soft, upper layer for comfort. Curtains and suncurtains are another way of changing your room completely. Sunblock curtains are very important here in Tenerife. They can protect your furniture from fading, and will help to keep the rooms cool and dark. Technology has changed the type of sun-curtains available. We can still supply the plastic sunblock, which is the cheapest option, although it is now rather more attractive as it comes in white, rather than grey with silver backing. We also use white material sunblock, and also have sunblock material in more than 20 colours, which means it can be co-ordinated with the rest of the interior,

and you no longer need two separate curtains. Sofa beds are also something relatively rare in the UK, but quite commonplace here. Obviously, if your property is rented out, this increases the number of people you can accommodate and, therefore, increases your income. But even for residents, a sofa bed can be useful for guests, and we all know that it is surprising how many friends and family we have once we have moved to Tenerife! Again, technology and design has moved on, and the latest sofa beds do not compromise on comfort as a sofa, and the beds have proper sprung or visco mattresses. You can’t tell by looking at it that it is a sofa bed, so you can always fib if you don’t want someone to stay. Respraying your furniture is another possibility, which can make a huge difference to your room, particularly if you change the colour to white or cream. So take a fresh look at your home and see what you can freshen up for Spring.

Gardener's robotic lawnmower dream THE weird, the mindboggling and the obtainable are all on display at Birmingham NEC’s Gadget Show, which ends on Sunday. And one invention which will surely be of great appeal to dads, at least, is Honda’s Miimo lawnmower – the company’s first commercial robotic product. Gadget Show in Birmingham. It is said to be the “ultimate time-saving device” and the perfect solution for those wanting a well-kept lawn without lifting a finger. Once installed, it needs minimal human interaction while working to ensure a beautifully-cut lawn, every day if necessary, for the length of the mowing season. Another incredible invention is the £8,000 Jetovator, a flying jetski, which uses pumps to shoot water downwards with enough force to

together at home and for working. Lenovo also showed a new version of its lightweight Yoga, which can perform as a tablet, but has a full-sized, fold-back keyboard. Both should be on sale this summer. Also, in keeping with what’s hot on the pop scene, the humanoid NAO robot can be programmed to perform many moves, including PSY’s Gangnam Style. But it has more serious use and is now, reportedly, the mostwidely-used humanoid robot for academic purposes worldwide. It does a lot of work with higher-education institutions, and the makers are planning to use the robot in primary and secondary schools to enhance such subjects as sciences, engineering and maths. If gadgets are your thing, then the NEC is well worth a visit this weekend if you’re heading for the UK.

keep the water bike flying above the waves. The machine allows you to experience the thrill of flying with the ease of riding a bike, climbing to heights of up to 30ft. It can also dive down to 10ft below the water, and move above the surface at speeds of up to 25mph. Oh, and it even be used to perform stuntlike barrel rolls and back-flips – ideal for our tourists areas over here.. On to more practical machines, and the Lenovo IdeaCentre Horizon 27in (68.5cm) “table PC” is a touchscreen device which works with a wireless keyboard and mouse. But it also has a “10-touch” screen which enables several people to use it like a tablet at the same time. The manufacturer says the Windows device is ideal for multi-player games to go ahead on one device, and it also allows children to use educational apps

but not price. Their snapshot research found in some cases packs had shrunk by up to a quarter but prices had stayed the same - or even increased in one case. So, the actual product is shrinking, the packaging in-

creasing, the price is the same but you’re getting less for your money than you were before! Which? executive director Richard Lloyd said: “Shrinking products can be an underhand way of raising prices because pack sizes shrink but the prices don’t. We want simpler pricing so people can easily compare products to see which is the cheapest, and for special offers to be genuine. ” More information is available at www.which.co.uk

In a short essay, Dr John David, RHS Acting Head of Science, explains the background to the new hardiness ratings system that can be used by gardeners to make informed choices about which plants to buy. Janet Cubey, Editorin-Chief of RHS Plant Finder 2013, says: “Compiling RHS Plant Finder each year is a mammoth task. However, the book is such a favourite with

IF it’s getting too much of a chore to do your hair, then maybe it’s time you simplified things. If you’re spending hours styling and looking after your hair, then you might want to rethink your look. Over-styling your hair can look dated and often looks as though you are forcing it into a style, rather than letting the cut do all the work. Finding the right cut for a client means stripping things down to basics, such as: “What do we hope to achieve?” And, “What do we have to work with?” There’s no use trying to create volume and movement if your hair is fine and straight. You have to go with the flow, so if you’re naturally dark in colour, then leave the blondes alone and vice-versa. Creating your look at home is the secret to looking good all the time, and styling your hair should take minutes, not hours,

Page 40

www.canarianweekly.com

IT'S A CLASS ACT!...

with the right cut. Follow your natural hair movement and don’t force things. If your hair falls forward, then go with it, because it is too hard and restricting trying to make it do something it’s not going to do. Keep colours simple and clean as well. “No fuss” is the key phrase at the moment, so your colour should complement your cut and not take it over. I love making-over clients, giving them something new and seeing the delight on their faces afterwards. That’s what my job is all about, and there is nothing worse than sending someone out of the salon with some-

thing less than flattering. Listen to your stylists and be guided by them. If you’re feeling a little drab and your style isn’t working for you, then ask them for advice on how to change your look. I’m really against clients having to have a weekly blow-dry to maintain their look. With the right cut and your stylist showing you how to maintain that look, you should be able to style your hair at home. It’s all down to the right cut for you, so if it’s not working, then change it. There are hundreds of styling options, so there is absolutely no need to stick to the same look.

Bowel cancer still such a mammoth problem for males MEN’S bowel cancer rates have increased by more than 25% in the last 35 years, against a rise of just 6% for women over the same period.

Yet a Cancer Research UK study maintains that survival rates are improving, with half of all patients living for at least 10 years after being diagnosed. It is not known why there should be such a large difference in the increase in numbers between men and women. Rising rates of bowel cancer may be linked to obesity and diets high in red and processed meat and low in fibre, as well as the increasing

age of the population. The disease is the UK’s second-most-common cause of cancer death after lung cancer. Cases of bowel cancer for men have increased from 45 per 100,000 in 1975-77 to 58 per 100,000 in 2008-10, which is an increase of 29%. The figures for women were 35 per 100,000 rising to 37 per 100,000 in the same timescale. The age group with the biggest rise is those in their 60s and 70s, who experience 23,000 new cases a year. Professor Matthew Seymour, of Leeds University, who is director of the National Cancer Research Network, said: “We know the risk of bowel cancer increases as we get older and, since we’re all living longer, it’s no surprise to see

that the number of people getting the disease is rising. “But when we look at these figures, and take people’s age into account, we still see that the risk of bowel cancer has gone up in men in the last 35 years.” He added: “It’s important to find out what’s behind the rise, and what we can do about it.” The figures have been released to mark bowel cancer awareness month, and the launch of a new campaign by the Bobby Moore Fund charity. The Make Bobby Proud campaign intends to spread the word about the disease, especially among men involved in the football community. Stephanie Moore, whose legendary husband Bobby died of bowel cancer in 1993, said it was encouraging that the survival rates were improving. But she added: “However, it’s vital we continue to fund research to fight this disease, as these new statistics show.” Dr Julie Sharp, senior science information manager at Cancer Research UK, said the charity’s researchers had played a “starring role” in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

Booze problem is rife among the under-10s

SHOCKING new figures have revealed that children as young as seven are being admitted to UK hospitals with alcohol problems. And dozens of under10s have been hospitalised with mental and behavioural disorders because of booze! A Freedom of Information request to all of England’s 166 NHS hospital trusts disclosed that 380 children aged 10 or under were treated for alcohol intoxication between 2008 and 2012. Worryingly, though, 67 of the trusts approached either failed or refused to adhere to the FoI request, which means the figures are likely to be even higher. The most alarming incident was highlighted

by an intoxicated sevenyear-old boy, said to be “addicted” to alcohol, who was treated at a Sussex hospital.

5th April - 11th April 2013

Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust described his diagnosis as “alcohol intoxication”

and the reason for his attendance as “alcohol related”. The main diagnosis was a mental and behavioural disorder because of “acute intoxication with alcohol”, one report stated. For patientconfidentiality reasons, the Trust would not divulge any other detail except to say that he was admitted to hospital in 2008. In another case, a 10-year-old boy was admitted to a Devon hospital after drinking so much that he collapsed. Meanwhile, at least 25 girls and boys aged between seven and 10 were taken to hospital

in England between 2008 and 2012 to get help for an alcoholinduced disorder. And hundreds more children were rushed to A&E because they were drunk, though not necessarily suffering from an ongoing issue with alcohol. In some of the cases, the alcohol was probably consumed accidentally, although the data held by hospitals does not always specify this. In one frightening example of child neglect, a two-year-old boy was rushed to a hospital run by Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust last year after accidentally drinking vodka.

And in another case, a baby who hadn’t even turned one was hospitalised in Gloucestershire after sustaining a head injury while intoxicated with alcohol. One case reported involved a baby who was hospitalised after sustaining a head injury while intoxicated with alcohol. The research, by the Ferrari Press Agency, revealed all five of the worst-hit hospital trusts were in the south of England, the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust topping the list. A total of 46 drunken children, aged 10 or under, were rushed to A&E at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading between 2008 and 2012. Two of these - a nineyear-old girl and a 10-year-old boy - were admitted as in-patients to receive treatment for an alcohol-induced mental and behavioural disorder. Nick Barton, chief executive of the charity Action on Addiction, said children who suffered from booze problems were likely to have an alcoholic parent. He added: “Children who grow up in homes where their parents have alcohol and drug problems are seven times more likely to develop substancemisuse problems themselves. “A recent study indicated that 22% of children live with at least one parent who drinks hazardously. “A particularly worrying finding was the lack of awareness among parents about the effects of their drinking on their children. “These children are at risk in a variety of ways, from disruption of family life, social isolation and a threat to safety as a result of parents’ alcohol related behaviour, to the accessibility of alcohol. Often, they assume the parental role.”

CHOCOHOLICS:

THE FACTS

AS Easter drew to a close, Mintel revealed some sweet stats about our eating habits.

Page 42

Can you believe that just 5% of Brits haven’t eaten chocolate in the past six months? One third (31%) of us have only eaten seasonal chocolates in the past six months. Milk is top of the chocs, with 57% of British chocolate eaters having eaten milk chocolate in the past six months. Dark is a favourite for one in four (23%) Brits, while just 7% opt for the white variety. Dark chocolate leave a bitter taste in your mouth? One in five British chocolate eaters (20%) claim that they don’t like the flavour of dark chocolate as it leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. It’s the over-55s who are much more likely to

prefer dark - with 38% of chocolate eaters in this age group, compared with just 16% of under34s. And, 13% of British chocolate eaters don’t care, any chocolate will do! There are daredevils. 22% to be precise who

Yoghurt dates expired

THE Spanish Government has removed the expiration date of yogurt, which will have instead best-before dates, according to the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Miguel Arias Cañete, who stated that “there is no obligation for yogurts to have a date “ set 28 days after manufacture. The ‘best before’ date is appropriate for the vast majority of foods and indicates the period for which a food can reasonably be expected to retain its optimal condition (e.g. it will not be stale) and relates to the quality of the food. The ‘use by’ date is the required form of date mark for those foods which are highly perishable from a microbiological point of view and which are likely after a relatively short period to present a risk of food poisoning, and relates to the safety of the food. During the presentation of the Strategy ‘More food, less waste’, which seeks to achieve halving food waste by 2025, the Minister explained that now every manufacturer should evaluate the reasonable

time in which yogurt can be consumed. Consumers from now, will know that until the new date yogurt keeps all its organoleptic properties, but thereafter does not mean that their use is harmful. “We will not put two dates (use by and preferred) it’s for crazy consumers,” he added. This measure is part of the strategy to try to reduce food waste, which in Spain rises to 7.7 million tonnes and worldwide accounts for a third of the production worldwide. Thus, Spain is the sixth in the European table of food waste, behind Germany (10.3 tons), the Netherlands (9.4 tons), France (9 tons), Poland (8.9 tons) and Italy (8 , 8 tons). The more food, less waste strategy covers five major areas that affect the rules of government, businesses and food chain operators and society in general, as it will help develop policies that promote a change in attitudes and systems work and management of restricting the waste and reduce environmental pressures aimed at engaging all sectors of society.

Tenerife rural brand TENERIFE Cabildo has given 192 farms the certification mark Tenerife Rural, associated with traditional products like honey from Tenerife, cottage cheese and fresh rabbit meat.

Councillor of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, José Joaquín Bethencourt, explained that this seal of quality distinguishes these products, traditional gofio, contributing to a

“boost in Canarian market recognition while providing consumers with more information about the origin and characteristics of these foods.” José Joaquín Bethen-

court announced that in addition to these four brands, the Cabildo is now working to integrate others into this seal of quality such as the mojos of Tenerife, tomato and onions.

World-class islands TripAdvisor® have announced the winners of their first Travellers’ Choice Islands Awards 2013. The results are based totally on traveller feedback. Scotland is celebrating as it’s laying claim to five of the UK’s top 10 islands. And, Scotland even features two islands in the European top 10 list, with Mainland Orkney beating the vast majority of sun-soaked Mediterranean islands by placing fifth. The Isle of Skye came in ninth place above the Canary island of Fuerteventura. “Whether you’re looking for idyllic palm-lined islands, or islands that offer a more cultural experience, you’ll find inspiration in these lists,” commented Emma Shaw, TripAdvisor spokesperson. “It’s great to see UK islands recognised by travellers, proving that islands

don’t have to offer exotic sunshine.” Scotland racked up seven awards for its islands in total, two in the European list and five in the UK list. In addition to Mainland Orkney which took first place in the UK and fifth in Europe and the Isle of Skye which ranked third in the UK and ninth in Europe, the Isle of Mull, Lewis and Harris and the Isle

Air Passenger Duty increases THIS week has seen a hike in Air Passenger Duty. Chancellor George Osborne confirmed that there would be an increase for people buying tickets from now It means that a family of four flying in economy class to Florida will now pay £268 in APD, while a family of four flying to the Caribbean will pay £332. British Air Transport Association chief executive Simon Buck said: “The government has hit hard-working families where it hurts with many families having to pay hundreds of pounds in air passenger taxes on their annual getaway. “It’s not good enough to continue increase Air Passenger Duty when the clear economic evidence shows that

Page 44

it both damages the UK economy and adds hundreds of pounds onto the annual tax bill of many families who fly overseas every year.” Tenerife and the Canary Islands fall into band A, this means that APD is for reduced rate: £13 and for standard rate £26. There will now be three rates of APD: reduced, standard and higher for each destination band, depending upon the class of travel, making twelve different rates of duty in total. In relation to Tenerife, if you fly the lowest class with a seat pitch of less than 40 inches then basically you pay £13 per person, on each individual flight. So if one person flies return from the UK to Tenerife they pay APD of £26; that’s an increase of £2, £1 each way. More information is available from: www. hmrc.gov.uk/rates/apd. htm

of Arran took fourth, fifth and sixth places respectively in the UK list of winners. Mike Cantlay, Chairman of VisitScotland, said: “For two Scottish destinations to feature in Europe’s top-ten islands is fantastic recognition for the unique beauty and eternal appeal of Scotland’s islands. It is particularly apt in the Year of Natural Scotland, something which

celebrates our country’s outstanding natural beauty.” Home to the Royal couple, Kate and William, the Isle of Anglesey has been crowned eighth best island in the UK. Located off the northwest coast of Wales near the beautiful Snowdonia mountain range, Anglesey has lots of blue flag beaches and is rich in ancient history.

Anglesey is also home to the village with the longest place name in Britain: Llanfairpwllgw yngyllgogerychwyrndro bwllllantysiliogogogoch. The world’s best is Ambergris Caye in Belize being crowned the number one island in the world. The largest island in Belize, Ambergris Caye boasts spectacular caves, winding waterfalls, tropical rainforest and hundreds of limestone caves. Brits book on-line RECENT research suggests more than 60% of people booking cheap flights to Tenerife and other popular holiday destinations in 2013 will do so online.

This gap is expected to widen as the year progresses. These results confirm that consumers feel most at ease when they are able to make holiday decisions themselves online. This applies to individual components

as well as packages. On the whole, young adults were most likely to use the Internet, with 55% of 16 to 34-year old respondents saying they would use web sites, compared to 25% of the 50 plus age group. The largest number

of online bookings was made by students (60%). This figure came down to just 20% for retired persons. Wealthier households, and those with children at home, were also more likely to book by mouse. Source Jet2.com

A study conducted by TNS for Travel Weekly in early February highlights the growing popularity of internet channels among those planning a holiday. Over 2,000 adults responded to the survey, with 42% saying they would make their travel arrangements online. Another 12% would use traditional high street outlets, while only 5% would book by phone. This suggests that up to twenty million will be using the internet to book their holidays this year, compared to around eight million using other methods.

Kia bare their new Soul By Jav KIA revealed their new Soul at the New York Motor Show, and it seems likely to be another winner for the South Korea company. It features a brandnew chassis and a design inspired by the stylish Track’ster concept. The current Soul was a huge hit in the States, and the firm have clearly updated the design rather than overhaul it. The profile and stance

are still recognisable, but the 2013 Soul gets a trapezoidal lowerair intake, a new grille inspired by that of the

Track’ster - and a new floating body colour panel in the bootlid. The interior has been reworked fully to give

it upmarket feel, and there are now softtouch materials on the instrument panel, centre console and

doors. And there are glossy, black-trim highlights throughout. There’s a clear circular theme to the cabin, as well, with a “triplecircle” instrument cluster, rounded window controls, door locks and a circular gear knob. As well as that posher feel, Kia are also promising a more refined and spacious cabin. Front passengers are treated to a fraction more room in all dimensions, while a 20mm longer wheelbase should do its part to increase rear legroom. Total boot space, meanwhile, will please the family man because it is up by 14 litres to 685 litres. Improvements in in-

sulating foam, together with additional noisedeadening, should reduce interior noise levels by around three decibels, according to Kia. And the front and rear suspensions have also been reworked to help improve handling and ride. The US engine lineup includes a 128bhp 1.6-litre petrol and a 162bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine. In the UK, buyers can expect to see a 126bhp 1.6-litre diesel introduced to the range, most likely in place of the 2.0-litre petrol. Sales in the US are expected to begin towards the end of this year, while UK sales will likely start early in 2014 with a starting price of around £13,000.

And here’s another one they’ve dreamed up! JUST to make it even more interesting on the Kia front, the firm’s CUB concept was unveiled at their home motor show in Seoul. It is based on the Soul’s compact chassis platform and is actually a four-door coupe with an eye-catching set of pillar-less doors and striking exterior design. This was devised in Seoul and overseen by Peter Schreyer, Kia’s Design Director and President, who claims the smooth styling and 2+2 layout were inspired

by the Kee concept from back in 2007. It definitely looks meaner than the Soul, with turbine-like 19inch alloy wheels, the latest interpretation of the “tiger-mouth” grille with a slimmer look than before. There’s also an intake on one side to feed air into the 1.6-litre GDI turbo engine from the Pro_cee’d GT, which develops a decent 201bhp and 265Nm of torque. Innovative features include a set of rearopening “suicide” doors and a set of “turning vanes”, which stick out of the side-sills and are designed to “add

definition” to the overall shape. The interior follows

the same high-quality design as the MINIrivalling provo concept,

revealed at the Geneva show earlier this month, and features some

impressive kit as well. A new safety feature that monitors the driver’s biorhythms, via contact patches on the steering wheel, and touch-sensitive climate controls add to the luxurious feel. There’s even a special camera which allows the driver to use gesture commands to control the infotainment system. Will it ever be spotted on the road? Tom Kearns, Kia’s US designer, says he is “very serious” about turning Soul offshoot models like the Track’ster and this concept into reality, as part of the brand’s new direction.

HOLE IN ONE FOR VW GOLF THE Volkswagen Golf has voted 2013 World Car of the Year, as revealed at an exclusive New York ceremony during the city’s prestigious Motor Show. It trumped these short-listed models: the Porsche Boxster and Cayman, the Mercedes A-Class and the Toyota GT 86 and Subaru BR-Z

sports cars. Volkswagen boss Professor Martin Winterkorn (pictured with his award-winner), said: “To win shows that the VW Golf is in a class of its own around the world. “And soon, the Golf will be launched as a plug-in hybrid and full electric car.” The panel of judges comprised 66 journalists from around the world, who also voted for Design of the Year, Performance Car of the Year

5th April - 11th April 2013

and Green Car of the Year. The new Jaguar F-Type, to be launched in the next few months, clinched the best design accolade, with Jaguar boss Adrian Hallmark saying, “We’re back where we belong. Our team has set a style for our future.” The Porsche Boxster and Cayman won the World Performance Car Award, while the Tesla Model S electric car was named World Green Car of the Year.

CD Tenerife 5 Coruxo 2 Rayo B 2 CD marino 0 SOMETIMES, you just have a feeling that something is going to happen. Tenerife’s last few performances have been lukewarm and the fact they were still five points clear at the top of the table was down to luck than judgement. As I drove up to Santa Cruz last Sunday, I got that feeling. All football fans know the one. It’s a sixth sense. A vibe. A calling if you will. Whatever it was, I just KNEW that Tenerife would win big. The bookies odds of 4/7 seemed generous against an average side in Coruxo. The sun was blazing, the mercury rising and the hour lost to the clock-change would surely affect the visitors. In my eyes, the ingredients were all there. And for once, the team put them in the bowl at the right time, pre-heated the oven and baked the perfect cake. We even had a cherry on top, but that can wait until a little later. It took Tenerife just eight minutes to take the lead, and even that was after squandering some early gifts. A fine ball from Chechu saw Ayoze skip the offside trap and bear down on goal. The youngster tore into the box and, instead of testing the keeper, he looked up and picked out the unmarked Llorente. The left-back swept the ball past the stranded Fernando for his first goal in 13months. He was like a Cheshire Cat as he celebrated, and a few minutes later he had a chance to make it two.

5-star Tenerife as a star is born

Tenerife were flying, and Ayoze was causing panic in the away defence. Time after time, as Cyndi Lauper might say, he made fools of the visitors. He has a brilliant first touch and the sort of cheeky step-over which reminds me of a certain Portugese winker. Unfortunately, he fluffed his lines in front of goal once or twice, but it didn’t make any difference as Tenerife were so comfortable. Well, they were until Coruxo’s stunning equaliser after 27 minutes. Left-back Pastoriza’s run went unchallenged and, from inside the box, his shot exploded off his boot and into the roof of the net. Tenerife keeper Sergio Aragoneses could have done better, but it was a fine hit. For some reason, Pastoriza celebrated in front of the “Kop” as though he had hit the Cup Final winner, It did not go down well. The shock equaliser energised Coruxo. They were a yard quicker, keen, and exerted some real pressure for the rest of the half. At the break, Tenerife boss Alvaro Cervera, who had been having kittens in the technical area, let his charges have it. I think it’s called El Hairdryer here! Five minutes after the restart, Tenerife were back in front. Ayoze cast his spell over the Coruxo •defence” and a free Aridane slotted the ball past Fernando. It was a simple finish to a wonderfully-superb move. That should have been the bugle call for Tenerife to kick on, but again they fell asleep at the back and conceded a soft equaliser. Coruxo broke up an attack deep in their own half, and a swift counter attack led to a free-kick on the edge of the Tenerife box. From my commentary position, the wall looked porous and illconstructed. Antunez, who had a fine game,

must have seen the same as he smacked the ball through the wall, past the players who were more concerned about not bruising their plums, and past the diving Aragoneses. It was stupidly soft, and Cervera instantly made changes. He hooked the powder-puff Luismi Loro and threw on Suso. I wrote a few weeks back that Suso wasn’t quite right. I honestly don’t know what the problem was, but in 30 minutes last Sunday, all was forgotten as he produced his best performance of the season. In tandem with Ayoze, they scared the life out of Coruxo, put down a marker for the rest of the season and made the watching scouts purr. I lost count of how many times they breached the defensive line. It took 10 minutes before Tenerife retook the lead. Suso charged to the byline, sold Pastoriza a dummy, cut inside the box and picked out Ayose, whose effort was turned over the line by

Yao. Seconds later, Suso charged to the byline, sold Pastoriza a dummy, cut inside the box and picked out Aridane, who saw his shot well saved. A minute later, Suso charged to the byline, sold Pastoriza a dummy,

delight of the Heliodoro faithful, who gave him the kitchen sink as he walked off, head bowed. Revenge and all that … Ayoze was now having fun as he produced his bag of tricks, and Tenerife had numerous chances to make it a perfect five goals, which they duly did with the last kick of the match. Aridane rounded off another sweet move to seal the first Tenerife hat-trick since Perona’s last season. I almost felt sorry for Aridane afterwards. He had notched a fine treble, cemented his place in the starting line up and left with the match ball. Yet he was upstaged by a super sub and a super kid! Gaffers A on the slide THERE were a couple of major upsets in Division One this week, and The Peacocks put a massive banana skin under Gaffers A’s title bid. The Peacocks have been in fine form recently, but Gaffers A were still expected to prevail, especially at home. And while Peacocks did well, Gaffers threw the match in the bin as they twice went in-off on final blacks. The two dropped points could be crucial because on Tuesday, they MUST beat

Tenerife Hammers A, who warmed up with a smooth win at Toscales A. Hammers A are two points clear and will feel the league is their’s if they beat Gaffers A on Tuesday. It should be a thriller. Third-place Phoenix Potters lost the Los Abrigos derby at home to rock-bottom La Caña. Potters were never at the races and, inspired by Sergio La Caña, La Caña recorded a rare away win. They are now level on points with Terrace B, who lost again, this time at Inn The Pink A, who have now won their last three matches. Palms A sneaked past Phoenix Knights 7-5 in

a strange game. They were 3-0, 4-2 and then 6-2 up, before Knights fought back. But Pete held his nerve to win the deciding frame and seal a vital three points in the race for third. Tenerife Hammers C had lost their last six matches, but they are back in the win column after grinding out a vic-

tory over Dreamers. But the 8-4 scoreline does not tell the tale of how close the match was. The top three sides were all victorious in Division Two. Next Door swotted aside Treehouse B 9-3, secondplace Exiles A smashed Bluebell A 10-2 and Treehouse A overcame Inn The Pink B 8-4.

Palms B enjoyed their trip to Shortys. They returned home with an 8-4 win, thanks in part to Guv’nor Shai, who was “spectacular”, by all accounts. Ryans Bar still have a TPT Plate semi-final to look forward to at the end of the month, and

they are in good form as the 7-5 win over Bar 13 showed. Bluebell B, who also have Plate action ahead, were far too good for Tenerife Pool Tables (10-2), while Gaffers B ended Exiles B’s promotion hopes with a 9-3 win..
