A man’s right to work as he will, to spend what he earns, to own property, to have the State as servant and not as master these are the British inheritance. They are the essence of a free economy. And on that freedom all our other freedoms depend.”

Margaret Thatcher 1925-2013 M A R G A R E T THATCHER, Britain’s first Prime Minister, died peacefully at London’s Ritz Hotel on Monday morning. The frail 87-year-old, known as the “Iron Lady” in her prime, was said to have been sitting up in bed reading a book when she suffered a fatal stroke. Baroness Thatcher, as she was to become, was Conservative Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990, when she lost the leadership of her party, having won three General Elections, and been in office for 11 years. She was highly respected throughout the world, and was accredited by statesmen, her followers and foreign governments with “saving the UK”. Her death was met with mixed reactions, mainly because she took on the unions, who had caused her predecessor Edward Heath’s downfall, and beat them. Nick Robinson the BBC’s respected political editor, summed her up perfectly, tweeting: “The dominant figure of postwar British politics is dead. Love her or loathe her, Margaret Thatcher shaped this country as few others did.” He later wrote in an obituary: “She was one of the most influential political figures of the 20th Century.” David Cameron called her a “great Briton”, and the Queen, who will attend her funeral with Price Philip, spoke of her sadness at the death. The Prime Minister cut short his trip to Europe following her death and reopened Parliament on Wednesday for MPs to pay their respects - or otherwise - to her. Baroness Thatcher will not have a state funeral, but will be given the same status as Princess Diana and the Queen Mother: a ceremony, with full military honours, which will take place at St

Paul’s Cathedral on Wednesday. Margaret Hilda Thatcher was born on 13th October 1925 in Grantham, Lincolnshire, the daughter of grocer Alfred Roberts and his wife, Beatrice. Her father, a Methodist lay preacher and local councillor, had an immense influence on her life and the policies she would adopt. Margaret Roberts went to a grammar school and then on to Oxford University, where she graduated with a degree in chemistry. She married businessman Dennis Thatcher in December 1951 and they had two children, twins Carol and Mark, 20 months later. By that time, she had changed careers and become a tax barrister. But even then she was
already looking towards Parliament and, six years later, she became MP for Finchley, in North London. She was on the way to the top and when she got there, those who opposed her soon found out just how tough she was, especially Argentina. When the Argies invaded the Falkland Islands in an attempt to claim them as their own, she reacted promptly by waging war on them and secured a famous victory. And the various unions who crossed her path lived to regret it because she despised all the strikes which took place, seemingly at the drop of a hat, and, in her opinion, so unnecessary. The Northern Ireland conflict also loomed large during the Thatcher era, and she regarded the
“Margaret Thatcher’s political career has been one of the most remarkable of modern times. Born in October 1925 at Grantham, a small market town in eastern England, she rose to become the first (and for two decades the only) woman to lead a major Western democracy. She won three successive General Elections and served as British Prime Minister for more than eleven years (1979-90), a record unmatched in the twentieth century.” Source www.margaretthatcher.org

region as every bit as British as her Finchley constituency. She stood down as an MP in 1992 and accepted a peerage, but this formidable woman had always been regarded with a mixture of fear and awe because of her domineering manner. In 1980, soon after becoming Prime Minister, she described herself in a nutshell saying: “I love argument. I love debate. I don’t expect anyone just to sit there and agree with me – that’s not their job.” The then Mrs Thatcher became patron of dementia research charity Alzheimer’s Research UK in 2001 and several years later her daughter, Carol, revealed that her mother had been diagnosed with dementia in 2008. Rebecca Wood, the charity’s Chief Executive, said: “Thanks to Lady Thatcher, we have made inroads with our research to defeat dementia. “The answers will come too late for her, but they will come, and this will be another important part of our collective memory of her life and work.”
A WARNING has been issued about phishing because people are receiving emails supposedly sent by the AEAT (Tax Administration) under the guise of a “tax return message”. In fact, it is a scam, attempting to gain your personal information, so whatever you do, don’t open these messages, but report them to the authorities.
The biggest buzz of all! According to Spanish Press reports a derelict house in La Gomera has been cordoned off because there is an enormous wasps’ nest inside. The authorities were alerted by neighbours to the seven-metre long nest, which contains millions of wasps normally found in gardens. The nest is unique because of its size, and it is thought that the wasps came to the island from Morocco.
Huge haul of cocaine seized PORTUGESE police arrested four people and seized 24 kilos of cocaine on a cruise ship which had departed from Santa Cruz this week. The drugs were seized while the ship was docked in the port of Funchal, Madeira. They were found in the linings of suitcases and backpacks.
Romanian family arrested FIVE members of a Romanian family - four men and a woman - have been arrested in Tenerife for allegedly exploiting fellowRomanians. They were said to have lured them to the Island on the promise of contracts, only to send them out on the streets as beggars and sex slaves. DEATH PARTIES FOR MAGGIE THERE were “celebrations” throughout the UK to acknowledge the passing of Margaret Thatcher, a woman whom people said had “ruined millions of lives”. Impromptu, boozefilled street parties were held on Tuesday, the day after her death. In Brixton, South London, some 500 vehement critics of the “Iron Lady” held placards reading “Rejoice - Thatcher is dead”. They drank alcohol and danced to hiphop and reggae songs from the 1980s. Other posters, bearing the Socialist Worker newspaper’s masthead, simply proclaimed: “Rejoice! Rejoice!” The London suburb, which has a high immigrant population, was
the scene of two intense periods of rioting in the Eighties, when Thatcher was in power. Judith Orr, Socialist Worker editor, said: “The Brixton riots were a result of racism and class discrimination that Thatcher presided over. “She is still seen by millions of workingclass people as someone who ruined lives.” Police said there was “low level” disorder at the Brixton event, but no arrests were made and no one was injured. A similar party, involving around 300 people, took place in Glasgow, while in Easton, Bristol, seven police officers were injured, one seriously, when they tried to break up a party of around 200 people cel-
ebrating her death. Trouble flared after midnight when a rowdy 200-strong crowd refused police requests to disperse. Dozens of officers donned riot gear and used shields and batons as they were pelted with bottles, cans and rubbish. Wheelie bins were set on fire by the mob, and a police car was damaged by the flying missiles. Some of the injured police needed hospital
treatment and one male officer was detained with a neck injury. Facebook pages were linking to a left-wing site, where a party to mark her death had been proposed since 2004, urging people to turn up from 6pm tomorrow (Saturday) in Trafalgar Square, where the most violent poll tax riots took place in 1990. People were urged: “Bring your champagne, fireworks, party clothes
- and yourselves!” Class War founder Ian Bone said: “Thousands of anti-Thatcher protesters and anarchists will be there, including people from groups that she, historically, had confrontations with.” He believes the main London party will be held then, rather than at the funeral, because of the planned mass police presence. And they got off to an early start in Trafalgar Square on Tuesday, where champagne bottles were passed around as people celebrated. In Liverpool, where Thatcher was deeply unpopular among many residents because of her role in the docks’ closure, and response to the Hillsborough disaster, plans were already
being made for a mass celebration. There were several street parties in Leeds, where one group handed out “Thatcher’s dead cake”, In Derry and Belfast, there were republican celebrations. In one incident in Derry a petrol bomb was thrown at a passing police patrol during a street party. In the Falls Road area of west Belfast, car horns were sounded and champagne bottles cracked open as hundreds gathered to wave flags and chant. A campaign was even launched to make Ding Dong! The Witch is Dead reach No 1 in the music charts, and yesterday (Thursday) it was No5 in the downloads.

www.canarianweekly.com SHE was either she one of the greatest British Prime Ministers of all, or the worst the country has ever seen That’s the nation’s view on Margaret Thatcher, the only British female premier yet, who ruled with a fist of iron, and a will of steel. Soon after her death on Monday, her spokesman Lord Bell told the BBC: “She had an extraordinary aura and charisma, and she transformed people’s lives in this country and around the world. “She was one of the greatest prime ministers this country has ever seen.” Lib Dem MP Tom Brake tweeted: “My condolences to the Thatcher family. Mrs Thatcher made me & many of my generation Libs. But some of the battles she fought had to be won. Sky correspondent Paul Reynolds said: “The Argentine invasion of the
Good or bad … here is what they say about the Iron Lady Falklands roused Margaret Thatcher’s basic instincts to defend what she saw as fundamental British interests.” Labour’s Glenda Jackson could scarcely hide her fury in the Commons on Wednesday, saying: “Under Thatcher, greed and selfishness were seen as virtues. Sharp elbows, sharp knees – those were the way forward!” London Mayor Boris Johnson tweeted: “Her memory will live long after the world has forgotten the grey suits of today’s politics.” Nick Clegg, Deputy PM and Lib-Dem leader, said: “Margaret Thatcher was one of the defining figures in modern British politics.
“Whatever side of the political debate you stand on, no one can deny that, as Prime Minister, she left a unique and lasting imprint on the country she served.” Lady Thatcher’s daughter, Carol, said she had been diagnosed with dementia in 2008, but seven years earlier, she had been made patron of Alzheimer’s Research UK. Rebecca Wood, chief executive of the dementia research charity, paid tribute to her, saying: “Her death will resonate across the world but, in particular, with the 820,000 people living with dementia in the UK. “Thanks to Lady Thatcher, we have
made inroads with our research to defeat dementia. The answers will come too late for her, but they will come, and this will be another important part of our collective memory of her life and work.” Nigel Farage, UK Independence Party leader, called Lady Thatcher a “great inspiration”, adding: “Whether you loved her or hated her, nobody could deny that she was a great patriot, who believed passionately in this country and her people. A towering figure in recent British and political history has passed from the stage.
January 1986: Unemployment peaks at 3.1m.
Faux-pas of the week As the news of Baroness Thatcher’s death broke, journalists, newscasters, and social media across the world rushed to report it — but perhaps some should have taken more time to double check their facts. It would appear that in hurried attempts across the globe some didn’t get it quite right. A Taiwanese television news station has now apologised for airing footage of Queen Elizabeth II while reporting the death of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher. CTi Cable flashed a headline saying “Margaret Thatcher Dies
of Stroke” and showed two clips of the Queen shaking hands with the public. The station apologised after viewers criticised it for failing to distinguish between the women. News producers for Thailand’s armyowned Channel 5 apologised for showing actress Meryl Streep’s picture in a segment. For nearly two minutes, it displayed Baroness Thatcher’s biography alongside a picture of Streep in character for The Iron Lady. The production team wrote on Facebook later: “We will improve and develop our work more carefully and are deeply sorry.”

CHARITY fundraiser Bernie Bucket, who has raised fortunes in Tenerife alone for Cancer Research UK, has been honoured with a prestigious award in her native Wirral. And Bernie, aka Mrs Bernie Singleton, has
sent a heartfelt “thankyou” to everyone involved in her stirring work, both here and in the UK. Bernie, who collected a whopping 5,763.28 euros during her annual appeal-cum-show at Showtime, Karting Las Americas, last month, was one of five winners at this year’s Wirral Awards. They were presented
by the Mayor, Cllr Gerry Ellis, at Wallasey Town Hall. She was selected for the accolade “for raising awareness of breast cancer and exceptional fund-raising efforts for cancer research”. A delighted Bernie said: “Thank you so much to all the amazing people who have supported my fund-raising. This would not have
been given to me without their much-appreciated help.” The Mayor added: “On behalf of the people of Wirral, I was delighted to thank them for their efforts over many years. “The achievement identifies outstanding achievement from the last 12 months, or distinguished service over a period of 20 years or more.”
Bomberos runners are in step with Help for Heroes A NUMBER of Adeje volunteer fire-fighters (Bomberos) took part in Sunday’s Las Galletas Half-Marathon. The aim each year is to raise as much money for charity as possible and this time, unusually, a British charity, Help for Heroes, was selected. It was chosen in recognition of the outstanding support given by the British community as a whole to these voluntary fire-fighters, who performed heroically themselves during the torrid summer blazes which raged in Tenerife.
Sponsor forms were given out to bars around southern Tenerife and the money came rolling in.
Two former serving Royal Marines, Rick Sweeney and Barry Holroyde, co-ordinated the distribution and collection of sponsorship donations. Later on Sunday, The Palms sports bar held a fund-raising function to add to the sponsorship money. A raffle was held and a number of local acts gave up their time to raise money for this worthy cause. At time of going to press, around 900 euros had been raised, with a
number of sponsorship forms yet to be collected. Special thanks to Mat originally from Dorking in Surrey, now a volunteer Bomberos, for taking part in the run and linking up with H4H to raise much-needed funds for injured service personnel. And good luck to him when he joins the British Army later this year. A word of advice, though: next time you go for a run Mat, take Vaseline!

THE Clinica Dental Buzanada began operating in the area in October 2005, and such was the demand that it relocated to its present surgery a few years later.
Keep your teeth gleaming bright
There are several good reasons why you should frequent a dentist there because it has several good points worth noting. It is in a good position, it’s simple to find, the parking is easy and, of most importance, Manfred Firsching, the German owner and main dentist, is fluent in English. That means you will have no problem telling him or one of his multi-lingual team exactly what you would like done to your teeth. They can advise on all dental treatments including implants, orthodontics, teeth-whitening and dentures. The team provide general dentistry, orthodontics - specialising in children - plus the more complicated wisdom surgery and implants.
Manfred says the main reason many people visit the dentist is because they don’t want to lose their teeth. And, obviously, they need them to eat! “We’re a very good
quality family dentist,” he adds. “We operate the same standards as in Germany, which are among the highest in Europe.” His main aim, apart from sending his pa-
tients home happy, is to offer them stability, so they are treated by the same dentist year after year - and that is why he is both proprietor and dentist. His biggest challenge, and the most obvious one, is to persuade people to see their dentist regularly, even when there is nothing wrong with their teeth. “Regular visits help avoid damage,” he says. Over the years, he has
built a solid patient base by word of mouth, with patients recommending friends and family to visit him, and this is borne out by the fact that 95% of his customers are resident He is also concerned that youngsters have their teeth checked over from an early age. “We need to look after their teeth so they can avoid them being disadvantaged in the future,” says Manfred.
Clinica Dental Buzanada is open Monday-Friday from 9.30am-8pm. And if you are coming from the motorway, the premises are situated just before the Buzanada roundabout on the left-hand side. Your first check-up is free if you wish to discuss dental treatment with Manfred or one of his staff. See the Clinica Dental Buzanada advert on page 23.
Adeje striding ahead THE Department of Environment for the municipality of Adeje, headed by Esther Rivero Vargas has announced new trilingual signage for four walking routes within the area. The signs will be in Spanish, English and German. The routes are La Quinta-Aserradero Ifonche; La QuintaBoca del Paso-Adeje; Adeje-Boca del PasoIfonche and el Camino de la Virgen. Councillor Vargas said: “The new signage is an important step in the conservation and preservation of the environment and natural heritage that exists in Adeje. "The roads that run through local geography present unique features that have become of great interest to both
Page 8
residents and tourists who visit us.” The Adeje council has worked with locals who know the area well to develop the walks. Councillor Vargas added; that more routes will follow, but that these have been chosen initially because of their incredible beauty and immense popularity.
She concluded: “It sounds simple and basic, but I don’t think anyone should underestimate the mindset that is now promoting the rural and “green” tourism” niche market in the municipality, and indeed the information that needs to be provided for it.”

Adeje timeshare crackdown THE municipality of Adeje have this week introduced new laws within the area to govern the activity of timeshare. The new rules and regulations seek to protect visitors and residents alike from the harassment at times endured from vendors of this type of tourism product. Councillor, José María Álvarez Acosta said: “In a five-star destination like ours we have a duty to do everything possible to make our visitors feel comfortable and calm. "Do not forget that we are talking about our main economic engine and we are in a time of crisis. In this regard, the local council saw the need to regulate this type of activity in the streets that has become a nuisance and harassment to our tourists.”
From now on, any company that wants to operate in this field must apply for a licence and pay the corresponding fees, before initiating any activity. In addition there are a whole host
of other criteria which must be adhered to, otherwise, severe penalties will be enforced. · Applying for a licence (which is renewable) and pay relevant local taxes
· The business has to be registered in the normal way any in addition, turismo and companies will have to pay a bond per seller. · The number of people carrying out such work
on the streets will be reduced · They will only be able to work between the hours of 10am – 8pm · They will only be permitted to work in certain areas
· Those areas where they will not be permitted to work include – beaches, walkways, loading areas, transport stations like, bus and taxi ranks where people congregate. · Individuals carrying out this type of activity will have to wear a uniform · Plus, they will have to be in possession of an official permit · They are not permitted to sell directly and the holiday product they offer has to be within the area of Adeje. The Ayuntamiento states that aside from monetary fines of up to 3,000 euros for breaking the law, sanctions could include suspension of licences – even perhaps permanent bans. It emphasises that the main aim of the new regulations are to crack down on the techniques used to obtain clients, which are seen by many as aggressive with deceptive publicity.
Steve Jones gets top Foreign Office job STEVE Jones, British Consul for the Canary Islands and Malaga, is to take up a new role as Global Contact Centre Manager for the Foreign Office’s flagship Contact Centre programme. After two terms as Consul for the Canaries
Page 10
and four years as Consul in Malaga, Mr Jones has been appointed to manage the expansion of the highly successful Malaga Contact Centre – which will soon handle consular enquires from across the whole of Europe and Africa -
and the creation of three more centres in Hong Kong, Dubai and Ottawa. Once all four centres are established, Mr Jones will oversee the day-today performance of the global contact centre operation.
Dave Thomas, Consular Regional Director for Southern Europe, said: “We will be sad to lose Steve as Consul, particularly after only five months in the Canaries. “However is in that time he has increased the number of customer-facing staff from eight to nine, including the Honorary Consul in Lanzarote, extended opening hours at the Consulate in Tenerife, and setup a new process for seeking customer feedback in Gran Canaria that we will now be extending across southern Europe. “He has also successfully managed the development of the Malaga Consulate and Contact Centre over the last two years, increasing the number of staff delivering consular services from seven to 25, and recruiting and launching Honorary Consuls in Almeria and Jerez. “The Vice Consuls and their teams in the Canaries and Malaga will
continue to deliver exactly the same high quality of consular assistance. The new Consul will take over the responsibility
for strategic issues and consular policy. Steve will remain in post until May before the handover to his replacement.”
Suspected child kidnapper held POLICE have arrested a 62-year-old man in London in connection with an attempted abduction of a three-yearold girl in Lanzarote 15 months ago. It signalled the end of a manhunt by British police throughout the Canaries, including Tenerife, and relief for the child’s parents, from Milton Keynes, Bucks. The arrest came hours after the release of pictures of a man accused of trying to kidnap the girl, in a shopping centre in Costa Teguise, on 30th January last year. The girl’s father spotted a man holding her hand and leading her into an alleyway. He shouted out and ran up to his daughter, pulling
her away from the man, thought to be a British holiday-maker, who then left the scene. Photos of the man were taken by the girl’s family, who saw him on a beach a short time later acting suspiciously. The father confronted the suspect but he left before police arrived. Detective Constable John Swallow, of Thames Valley Police, said: “The investigation is ongoing and I want to thank the public for their continued help. “The incident was reported to Thames Valley Police after initially being reported to police in Lanzarote, and we had been making enquiries since then to try to establish the man’s identity.”

New horsemeat fears in Europe A FRESH horsemeat scandal erupted this week after Dutch authorities recalled 50,000 tons of meat, sold as beef across Europe. Some 370 companies in Europe, and a further 130 in the Netherlands, are affected because they bought beef from two Dutch trading wholesalers, who are believed to have added horsemeat. Firms have been told: “Take it off the market as a precautionary measure, and verify all products.” Britain’s Foods Standards Agency said a small number of UK businesses may be affected. The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) has decided to recall the “beef” meat immediately because its exact source cannot be established. As a result, it said: “Its safety cannot be guaranteed.” The NVWA statement said there was no immediate suggestion of any danger to human health. “The buyers have probably already processed the meat and sold it on,” it said. “They, in turn, are obliged to inform their own customers.”
Page 12
The Dutch Authority does not know where the meat has ended up, but it may have been used in frozen products. Dutch wholesalers involved are Wiljo Import and Export BV and Vleesgroothandel Willy Selten BV. Officials began a largescale investigation into the country’s meat industry in February following revelations across Europe that horsemeat was being sold as beef. Inspectors examining Willy Selten’s records found that the origin of the meat it supplied was unclear. This made it impossible for them to confirm whether slaughterhouses had been acting according to procedure.“ "It might contain
traces of horsemeat, but we don’t know for certain if this is the case,” said an NVWA spokeswoman. Tests have been carried on products for contamination, and the Authority has warned its foreign counterparts about the recall via a European rapid-alert system. Robert Nisbet, Sky’s Europe correspondent, said: “One of these factories that processes meat was raided on 15th February. “Prosecutors at the time believed that the management inside was shredding up horsemeat, then adding it to beef and selling it on as 100% beef. “What the authorities are saying is that they don’t believe there is
horsemeat in all of this 50,000 tons, but they cannot be sure. Therefore, they want to take it off the shelves and subject it to more tests. “If you remember, the previous horsemeat scandal detected from Findus products, made from Comigel in Luxembourg, was traced back
to horsemeat from two Romanian abattoirs. “That horsemeat was then sent to another processor in the Netherlands. So this would suggest that the Netherlands is an area people are looking at very closely now in terms of oversight in this massively-sprawling indus-
try that runs across Europe. Could it be there that many of the problems have originated since this horsemeat scandal blew-up back in January?” A preliminary probe by the Romanian Government suggested that paperwork from the two accused abattoirs was in order, and that livestock entering the facilities were documented accurately. It also indicated that the meat which emerged from the slaughterhouses was properly labelled, so therefore, the substitution happened elsewhere in the food production chain. The Europe-wide horsemeat scandal has seen many products withdrawn from supermarket shelves - damaging confidence in the continent’s vast and complex food industry.
Food for thought as M&S sales fall again MARKS and Spencer has reported a 3.8% drop in like-for-like clothing sales for the first quarter of 2013, although sales of food went up 4%. It was the company’s seventh consecutive quarterly fall in underlying general merchandise sales, yet the outcome was slightly ahead of expectations. M&S, still a leading high-street firm and the subject of takeover speculation, said sales of its non-food products - clothing, footwear and homewares - at all stores open for more than a year - dropped in the 13 weeks to 30th March. But as a result of the boost by food, total group sales in the period rose by 3.1%. The 129-year-old re-
tailer, which serves 21 million customers a week from over 700 domestic stores, had to rely on its strong food division again to support overall growth. Chief executive Marc Bolland is under pressure to recover M&S’s clothing performance after a poor 2012, culminated in a disappointing Christmas. And he has warned that a new general-merchandise management team, led by John Dixon, the former head of food, will be unable to make a major impact on sales until M&S launches its autumn/winter collections in July. James McGregor, director of retail consultants Retail Remedy, said: “The fourth quarter wasn’t as bad as some had expected.
“General merchandise is clearly still struggling, but these numbers will buy Marc Bolland a few more months. Judgement Day for him will come later this year.” An optimistic Mr Bolland said: “We are working hard on improving our performance in general merchandise and, despite difficult trading conditions, we made progress in our operational execution. “In January, we said we expected the pressure on consumers’ disposable incomes to continue throughout 2013. “As a result, we were cautious about the outlook for the year ahead, and this view remains unchanged.” The M&S share price was up more than 3% in early Thursday trading.

This chip mayo isn’t that weedy M AYO N N A I S E , flavoured with cannabis, will soon be on the menu throughout a chip-shop chain in Holland. But there is no chance that diners at Manneken Pis will be flying high because the sauce is being made without the active ingredient tetrahydrocannabinol, better known as THC. “It’s just about the taste,” says Albert van Beek, who owns the business. “We specialise in sauces and we always want to diversify. “I had the idea because I smell the cannabis coming from the coffee shop opposite my chip
shop in Amsterdam every day.” Regular mayo is much more popular with chip lovers in the Netherlandss and Belgium than ketchup or vinegar, and special menus will state clearly that the mayonnaise definitely does not contain euphoric THC. Mr van Beek’s creation comes less than six months after a law drawn up to prevent tourists smoking cannabis in Amsterdam’s coffee shops was scrapped. The city’s mayor rejected the legislation, after the Dutch Government ruled that it would be up to local authorities to adopt the law.
Teenager has Twittered herself out of police job TEARFUL teenager Paris Brown, appointed Britain’s first youth crime commissioner, has quit before even starting the £15,000, one-year job! The 17-year-old this week withdrew after a Twitter list of offensive comments she posted before the appointment was uncovered. She was made to apologise after using homophobic, racist and violent language in tweets posted before she took the job, which led to a string of complaints. When police said they were investigating the possibility of an offence being committed, she promptly stepped down from the one-year post. “I have made the decision to decline the offer of the position of Kent Youth Police and Crime Commissioner,” she said.
”As I made clear over the weekend, I accept that I have made comments on social networking sites which have offended many people. I am really sorry for any offence caused.” Miss Brown, who made a tearful statement amid a media storm over her comments, added: “I strongly reiterate that I am not racist or homophobic. I have fallen into the trap of
behaving with bravado on social networking sites. And the youngster, who said the furore it had caused in the media would hamper her ability to carry out the job properly, added: “I hope this may stand as a learning experience for many other young people.” Ann Barnes, Kent Police and Crime Commissioner, said:
“It is a very, very sad day. Paris is an extraordinary young person with exceptional skills and a proven track record with working with young people. She has turned down the position of a lifetime. She added: “I was not recruiting an angel - I was not recruiting a police officer. I was recruiting a young person, warts and all. It is personally sad for Paris and her family.” One of Miss Brown’s controversial tweets said she was pleased her brother had thumped someone. In another, she wrote: “Im (sic) either really fun, friendly and inclusive when Im drunk or Im an antisocial, racist, sexist, embarrassing a*******. often its the latter.” Other posts referred to gay people as “fags”, and also endorsed binge drinking. But as she stressed, they were written some time before she was offered the prestigious post.
Airbag scare for millions of drivers POSSIBLE problems with passenger airbags have led to the recall of at least three million cars, including 152,000 in the UK. A transport ministry official in Japan said four car manufacturers Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Mazda had submitted reports about the problems, and the recall would reach a combined total of 3.39 million. Toyota’s spokesman said his company would be recalling a total of 1.73 million vehicles, manufactured between November 2000 and March 2004 in Japan and abroad, because of a defect in passengerside airbags. The company’s UK spokesman told Sky News the recall would affect some 76,000 cars in the UK, while the figure across Europe totalled 490,000.
Page 14
Toyota’s affected vehicles are all between nine and 13 years old, sold from November 2000 until March 2004, and include Corollas, Yaris, Avensis, Avensis Verso, Picnic, Camry and Lexus SC430. The Corolla and Avensis recall involves cars manufactured in Britain using at-risk
Japanese components. The UK spokesman added that there had been five problems recorded worldwide none in the UK - and no accidents or injuries had occurred in Toyota vehicles. Honda is recalling 1.135 million vehicles worldwide as a precaution, and a
spokesman told Sky News that the UK recall would cover 15,400 Civics, CR-Vs and FRVs. Nissan says it is recalling 480,000 vehicles globally, with 59,058 requiring modifications in the UK. No injuries had been reported. The company’s British cars affected were built
between 2000-2004 and the models include the X-Trail, Patrol, Almera, Almera Tino, Terrano II and the Navara. A UK spokesman said: “Nissan is conducting a voluntary, safety-recall campaign to address the issue identified, and replace the frontpassenger airbag inflator. We will begin
notifying customers within 30 days.” Mazda UK has confirmed that the recall will affect some 1,900 of their cars in Britain. The recalled airbags were made by Japan’s Takata Corporation and are also believed to affect some non-Japanese manufacturers, admitted company spokesman Akiko Watanabe. As a result, additional recalls are also expected to be made. Some airbags were said to have been constructed with excess gas canister charges, although a Honda representative said the problem stemmed from two human errors during production by the supplier. Spokeswoman Akemi Ando said a worker supposedly forgot to turn on the switch for a system which weeded out defective products, leaving parts stored improperly and exposing them to humidity.

Maybe this time? Yes, she did win! By Maggie Lennard
YES, we set our SatNav for Amarilla Golf and Heat Five of Tenerife Loves Karaoke 2013, arriving at the Premier Bar to a warm welcome from boss Carole. The contestant list had a couple of spaces which were quickly filled (and again, more turned up expecting to take part without registering; let this be a lesson to you), and we were off. Judges for the evening were Carole (Premier Bar manager and former UK circuit singer), Richard (Premier Bar regular, whose wife Jo does a mean Björk), Jamie Drew, from Oasis Fm and the Star Bar, and Ian Lennard (BangOnTrax owner and professional musician for over 40 years). First up was Daz, who was actually there to support his daughter, but who gave a great rendition of the Stereophonics’ Just Looking. One of three contestants originating from Heidelberg came next. Theresa treated the room to a solid interpretation of KT Tunstall’s Black Horse and the Cherry Tree. Each venue has so far provided its own regulars, and Barry was one of the Premier Bar’s contingents. Barry chose Garth Brooks’ (original) version of If Tomorrow Never Comes, and put plenty of emotion into it (which is no less than the song deserves). Singing fourth was Bristol-based student Kristen, who launched into Eva Cassidy’s version of the classic What a Wonderful World. You could have heard a pin drop; this girl’s voice was crystalclear, pure, and simply

amazing. If I had been up against her, I would probably have thrown in the towel there and then! Somebody had to follow, and that job fell to Boysey (apologies if his name is spelled incorrectly, but I did ask!) who sang The Green Green Grass of Home. Laura was sixth to compete, and made an admirable job of Curtis Stigers’ I Wonder Why, despite a hefty dose of the lurgy. We then took a short break to recharge batteries, refill drinks (and disinfect the microphone!), and the second half began with local boy Bobby, who sang Dance with My Father by Luther Vandross. It was evident he had done this kind of thing before as he sang smoothly and with feeling (both of which score points in this competition). Cassie, a TLK regular (and Daz’s daughter) went next and chose a Plan B song. She Said was delivered well, including the rap section (the first time we’ve had rapping this year), but did the judges take to it? That remained to be seen. Benny, from Germany, was next and he chose Rufus Wainwright’s ver-
sion of the Leonard Cohen-penned Hallelujah, which was a single release for X Factor UK 2008 winner Alexandra Burke. The notes were all fine, but the performance lacked a little something (emotion, maybe, but then how would I cope singing in German?). Next came what can only be described as two breaths of fresh air in Al and Mel. The competition is fierce (after all, there is a prize of 1,000 euros up for grabs), so it was refreshing to see a couple of entrants not taking it too seriously. Al sang the Bassey version of As Long as He Needs Me from the musical Oliver! and was every inch Nancy (note to future entrants: unbuttoning your top and showing the judges an impressive cleavage
may score extra points, but only if you stay in tune). Mel opted for the Ike and Tina Turner singalong Proud Mary. Having consumed a few alcoholic “refreshments,” Mel missed her cue, but the enthralled audience put her right, and by the first chorus we were all “rollin’ on the river.” Mel then launched into full Tina mode and with head shakes, wiggles and almost a headlong dive across the stage. It was one of those performances that could only be described as “interesting”. It should be said that both Al and Mel were grieving the very recent loss of a good friend, and their involvement seemed to be cathartic for them. Taking nothing away from their grief, they also entertained
impressively. In bringing the night back to its original purpose, the penultimate contestant was Peter, runner-up in the 2011 final and a finalist again last year. An operatic singer by choice, he was cajoled by Theresa into singing the Robbie Williams hit Angels. It was obvious he has a quality voice, but was the song choice a mistake, given that Nessun Dorma was in the system? Apparently not; the song was interpreted beautifully. Last to go was Kim, who had competed in Heat Four at Springers (narrowly missing the sing-off). Kim chose the Journey song Don’t Stop Believin’ which has become popular in its original version (thanks in no small part to the cast of Glee for reviving it, albeit not so well). Kim’s performance was sound, and she rounded off the qualifying stage rather nicely. Scores were in, ranked, and for the first time, our top three for the sing-off became the top four; even down to thousandths of a point, there was no separating those who tied in third. Our final four were Bobby, Cassie, Kristen and Peter. The judges drew the performance order and Bobby was up with the Bee Gees I Started a Joke. It was a good performance, but I had the feeling by this time that Bobby had relinquished all hope of a place in the grand final (which was a shame). Cassie opted to sing acapella, and kept her cool with Alicia Keys’ If I Ain’t Got You. It was well received, but still a risky option. Peter went third and reverted to the operatic route, selecting the newly-popular Bring Him Home from Les Misérables (thank you, Hugh Jackman). It was a great performance,
well delivered, but the last note was a touch sharp and, despite a tiny slide down at the very last moment, it was already out there. Kristen finished the sing-off with an unfamiliar (to her) version of Maybe This Time from the musical Cabaret. She gave her all, and it was probably evident to everyone in the Premier Bar that the last line “Maybe this time, I’ll win…” was more than apt. Goosebumps all round. In what was probably the most varied and entertaining heat so far, Cassie finished fourth, Peter third, Bobby second, and history and sociology A-Level student Kristen walked away with the winner’s trophy. It is getting hard to predict what will happen in the final on 1st June at Showtime, Karting Las Americas. But one thing you can be sure of is that it’s going to be simply amazing, and dominated by females on terms of participants. In five heats, we have had just one male winner (but Craig Seeney is a force to be reckoned with). Finally, My thanks to Carole for showing me around the system; much appreciated, as they are all different. Forthcoming heats 18th April: The Brewer’s Droop, Las Americas 27th April: Clouseau’s, Palm Mar 2nd May: Kandi Lounge, Puerto Colon 9th May: Terrace Bar, Amarilla Golf 16th May: Dreamers Bar, Los Cristianos 23rd May: Leonardo’s, Las Americas You can enter any of these heats by registering at the venue, by calling 902 232 102 in office hours, by email to info@oasisfm.com (no later than 4pm on the day of the heat), or by private message at the TLK Facebook page.

Legless Randy still a real wag! RANDY was brought into the refuge nearly two months ago in an awful state, having had his back leg badly broken in a car accident.
Accion del Sol news A specialist vet, together with Accion del Sol’s own vet tried to repair his leg with metal pins. It was a difficult operation but they wanted to save it. Unfortunately, because of the severity of the injury, the leg wouldn’t
heal and, eventually, the decision was made to amputate the leg. When he woke up after the operation, he moved his tail instantly and jumped out of his bed, as though telling the staff: “It’s okay for me, and I am happy to see
you guys again.” We are looking to finding a special foster home for Randy while he recovers, and if you believe you may be able to help him, please call 922 778 630 for more information. The Guaza pups, rescued from the mountain by Arona’s contracted dogcatchers, are doing well at the refuge, but we still need donations of puppy milk and tinned food. Our next “Fun Walk” is on 28th April, again meeting near the Conquistador Hotel on the seafront at the later time of 6.30pm. Please call Marion on the above number to request a dog from the refuge to walk, or join in with your own dog. Call 922 778 630 for more information, or if you would like to help out at the refuge in any way. Towels and blankets are always needed for the dogs, if you have any to spare. They would be very much appreciated by our inmates. The refuge is situated the Granadilla Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to the ecological park ITER, by the windmills. It is open to the public Monday–Friday, from 3-6pm,and if you are interested in adopting a dog or maybe just taking a dog or two for a leisurely walk, then do drop in.

Super Heroes raising funds Live Arico (PAWS) news
MANY heads were turned on Sunday as three of our committee members dressed up as Super Heroes to run the Las Galletas 10.8km race. Batman, Robin and Catwoman, otherwise known as Michaela, Sue and Kerry, finished in 80, 90 and 89 minutes respectively and, along with serious runners Tony Bailey and Keith Freeland, will have raised around 1,000 euros when all pledges are in. There was a great atmosphere, as always, but no one runs in fancy dress - well, until now, that is. Blind puppies update The puppies were again seen by the ophthalmologist last week, and she was happy that their situation had improved. The small one, Stevie Wonder, remains blind and is unlikely to regain her sight because her eyes are too badly damaged. But the other two, Ellie and Peanut, have some limited sight. Their sight is not the real issue, but
their pain of having eyes with no tears. We thank their foster parents, Johnny and Lynn, for painstakingly administering drops and artificial tears over the past weeks. The pups have another appointment at the end of this month. They have cost us almost 300 euros to date, so the benefit on Golf del Sur last week really was worthwhile. Many thanks again to all for their generosity and concern. Charity shops going strong Come and see what bargains we have in our charity shops. We have one in Los Cristianos, calle Reveron, near the harbour playpark, and the other in San Eugenio, opposite La Nina Hotel, by Amandas Bar. Both open daily from 10-4, closing at 2pm Saturdays and all day Sunday. Important phone numbers General Enquiries: Sue Havenhand 629 388 102; Siobhan Ferguson 630 857 626

Showtime for Oasis By Geoff Huxtable
WELL, what a night that was! Yes, the Oasis Fm Darts League Presentation at Showtime, which included some fine cuisine, great entertainment, a record attendance, a real Jager bomb - and a raffle that turned into an auction! And to top it off, we saw the highest
number of trophies ever awarded by the league, all washed down with a few scoops. Only a few, honestly. With Roscoe, Chris and Harry ably hosting and scoring, the proceedings were kicked off by Sarah, from Trap Door, who took to the stage to play Anna, of Bar Amistad, in the Ladies Memorial Trophy final. Anna, who looks to be a good darter, was too strong for a gallant Sarah, claiming the title with a 2-0 victory.
It was time for the Division 2 final, which saw a new name go on the cup as Jamie, of Bar 180 C, beat La Caña’s Dave 2-1. Taking a break from darts action, during which we were fed and watered handsomely, an appreciative audience enjoyed entertainment from Kevin Isaacs and his comedy Elvis show. Even Kevin must have been taken aback by the antics of two Phoenix Flames’ girls - and a young man by the name of Beck, from Bar 180!

sis Fm dart champs After drying our eyes, it was time for the last two finals. Hoping to defend his title, Nathan (Ourplace) faced Daniel (Palms Sports Bar), and what a match it was. Many would have had Daniel as favourite, but Nathan put in a superb performance to retain his trophy. The Premier League final featured Mick (Bar 180 A) and Tom, from league champions Xtreme Sports Bar. The two teams are fierce rivals, which
reflected in the determination of both players as they traded high scores and checkouts. At 2-2 it was a really difficult call, and you could have heard a pin drop in the 200-plus crowd as Tom fired in two fantastic legs to win the Memorial Trophy for the first time. Finally, a steady procession of winners and runners-up made their way on to the stage to collect gongs and cups. Some of
them even managed to walk in a straight line! The evening was rounded off by a raffle, which this year raised funds for local charity Helping Hands. Amazingly, the raffle turned into an auction for the main prize, a large. flat-screen TV. A young lady from Ourplace Playgirls outbid everyone and boosted the coffers to the extent that over 1,000 euros was raised on the night. It was a brilliant end to a brilliant evening.
A big thank-you to the staff at Showtime and to everyone who contributed to the event in one way or another. Let’s do it all again next season! One-off comedy drama written by Caroline Aherne and Jeff Pope. The Whittington Mall is closed but the guards on the night shift have big plans to skive off and watch the boxing on TV. They get into an electrical shop with a skeleton key but the plan goes horribly wrong when their boss Kenneth rumbles them. While they have been cheering Amir Khan on the widescreen, the mall has been robbed, and with everything recorded on the security cameras, there is only one thing to be done. Duckers, Jimmy and Ray must rewind the tapes and re-stage the robbery, making themselves out to be heroes. Can they get away with it when a police officer comes to take a look?

The Masters - Highlights. Hazel Irvine presents highlights of the second round of the 77th Masters from the world famous Augusta National course, Georgia. In 2012 there was an all-American affair at the head of the leaderboard after the second round, with veteran Fred Couples and countryman Jason Dufner setting the pace on five under. Englishman Lee Westwood had held the lead after the opening day at Augusta; however, he found himself among a five-strong chasing pack just a shot off the lead after round two.

Claudia Winkleman hosts a series in which some of the country's best home sewers are tested on their sewing and dressmaking skills in order to be crowned best amateur sewer by judges May Martin of the Women's Institute and Savile Row's Patrick Grant. In this edition, the six remaining contestants face three more challenges, including following a pattern for a pair of men's trousers. Tackling a fly fastening leaves most of the sewers baffled, but the second challenge - to add patch pockets to a high street skirt - produces some imaginative results. Finally the sewers create a made-to-measure silk blouse for their model. The slippery fabric is too much for two competitors, and they are eliminated from the programme

W C C H O IC E Get Him to the Greek Channel 4, 21:30 Russell Brand and Jonah Hill star in Nicholas Stoller's boisterous comedy. Aaron Green works for a record company run by the increasingly unhinged Sergio and is a huge fan of the British rock star Aldous Snow. Sergio and Green hatch a plan for Snow to play, in just three days' time, Los Angeles's revered outdoor venue the Greek Theatre. Getting Snow from London to LA, via New York and Vegas, should be a doddle. But he's just fallen off the wagon, and the sleazy rocker's appetite for drink, drugs and attractive women complicates the journey so much that it's not clear whether Green will survive the rock star's hedonism. In addition to Combs' superbly energetic turn, Rose Byrne shines as Jackie Q, a role that satirises the record industry's fondness for marketing its female artists as sexual commodities. Also starring Elisabeth Moss, Colm Meaney and a host of real-life music icons. Director: Nicholas Stoller Starring: Jonah Hill, Russell Brand, Rose Byrne, Tyler McKinney, Zoe Salmon,

China. Suzi Perry, with guests David Coulthard and Eddie Jordan, presents all the action from the Chinese Grand Prix, where Nico Rosberg will be hoping to repeat his history-making victory from 2012. Rosberg claimed both his first pole position and a debut win in Shanghai last year, giving Mercedes their first Grand Prix victory since 1955. Rosberg's lights-to-flag victory was a resounding one, winning by a margin of over 20 seconds; the battle for second place, however, was anything but. The victorious German's now-teammate Lewis Hamilton ended third after just losing out in a titanic battle with fellow McLaren driver Jenson Button. Hamilton left China with the Championship lead in 2012 and, with new employers Mercedes' impressive recent history in Shanghai, will be hoping for big things this time round.

In this episode, Chris travels across the world, from Iceland to Brazil, to Bangladesh and the Maldives. His aim - to reveal the secrets of our watery habitats, fresh and salty. The extra ingredients, carried in water and necessary for life, are oxygen and sediment. But it's how the animals manage these resources that determines whether a habitat can actually support much live. In the Brazilian Pantanal, Chris witnesses a riot of life, in a land where everything seems to be a giant: the snakes, the big cats, the otters, the fish- even the lilies! The reason? Well, it comes down to a very unassuming mollusc, the apple snail. In the Sunderbans swamp of Bangladesh, Chris shows us how crabs create an environment fit for mangroves, deer and tigers. In the Maldives, he meets the hero of the coral reef - the sponge.

Bradley and Kayla. Series in which young drivers take to the road in the family car, unaware that their parents are watching every manoeuvre through state-of-theart cameras placed in the cars. Jack-the-lad Bradley's fantasy life of going to casinos and lying to girls that he's a professional footballer don't quite match the reality of an 18-year-old going to college. Living his life in the fast lane continues behind the wheel, much to the annoyance of his dad Chris. Kayla's classic role as a daddy's girl means she can get away with murder - which is almost what happens when she holds a house party. But it's her skills behind the wheel that her driving instructor dad really has trouble with.

ENDEAVOUR ITV1, 20.00
When a young Secretarial student, MARGARET BELL, dies suddenly at home, ENDEAVOUR senses there is more to the case than the preliminary medical verdict of ‘heart attack’. Now working out of Cowley Police station, ENDEAVOUR has unofficially assumed the role of ‘bagman’ to DI FRED THURSDAY. However, newly arrived Superintendent BRIGHT has other ideas, and when a respectable GP is found shot dead in a public lavatory, ENDEAVOUR’s outlandish theories soon see him relegated to General Duties. Humiliated and humbled, Endeavour has to investigate from the sidelines. Through a puzzling haze of deceit and misdirection, involving an Oxford physicist who worked on the atomic bomb, and the fate of a vulnerable single mother, Endeavour is forced to question Thursday’s orders and risk his career to avert a family tragedy. Shaun Evans (The Take, The Last Weekend, Silk), who won over critics and viewers alike with his portrayal of young Morse, has returned to film four new films written by Lewis creator and Morse writer Russell Lewis. Acclaimed stage and screen actor Roger Allam (The Jury, Parade’s End, The Thick of It) returns as Endeavour’s senior partner, Detective Inspector Fred Thursday. Stage actor Sean Rigby takes on the role of a young PC Strange - the character who appeared in the original Morse series, played by James Grout. James Bradshaw will return as Dr Max Debryn and John Thaw’s daughter Abigail will make further guest appearances as Dorothea Frazil. Supporting cast include Anton Lesser (The Hour, Garrow’s Law, The Scapegoat) as Chief Supt Reginald Bright and Jack Laskey (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows) as DS Peter Jakes.

Mick is in his 40s and has spent years going in and out of jail; unless he gets housing once he’s released, he will commit crime to get back inside prison. His classic wholemeal soda bread topped with a cheesy Irish rarebit is the perfect snack at any time of day and his dark and dense, full flavoured stout bread with smoked salmon pate is as impressive as it is quick. Paul shows how easy it is to enjoy the magic of homemade crumpets bubbling on the griddle and how a simple scone recipe can transform a humble stew into hearty, fragrant beef cobbler that will have your hungry hoards beating a path to the table.

Royal Paintbox ITV1, 22.35 “We walk away and shuffle off our mortal coil, but these things live on. That’s what is so riveting, I think, about looking at other members of my family in the past. It’s this feeling that you know there they were, you can sense them sitting doing the painting and everything else and then that stays behind. It’s still you; it’s a part of you that stays there when the rest has gone.”- HRH The Prince of Wales “When I first came across Queen Victoria’s painting kit, as a filmmaker and watercolour painter myself, I was amazed to find out that 150 years ago she was an artist. Her great-great-great grandson, HRH The Prince of Wales also enjoys painting as a pastime, and for the first time on film he agreed to tell me the extraordinary story of the tradition of creating art in his family through the ages. In my search, I discovered dozens of talented artists, revealing an amazing treasure trove of creativity by Royal hands.” - Margy Kinmonth, Director In Royal Paintbox, the Prince of Wales reveals an extraordinary treasure trove of work by his forebears, many of whom were accomplished amateur artists, and traces his family’s love of painting through the generations. This story is brought to the screen for the first time by award-winning film-maker Margy Kinmonth, who produced and directed Looking For Lowry in the Perspectives strand for ITV. Set against the spectacular landscapes of the royal estates and with contributions from Countess Mountbatten of Burma; professional working artist Sarah Armstrong-Jones, daughter of Princess Margaret, speaking in her first ever interview on film.

Scott and Bailey ITV1, 21.00 Scott and Bailey investigate a murder that has all the hallmarks of a domestic. And as Rachel’s (Suranne Jones) infidelity nearly catches her out, Janet (Lesley Sharp) asks Dorothy (Judith Barker) to move in with her. Married life gets no easier for Rachel (Suranne Jones), and as she tries to forget her regrettable one-night stand, the ‘talentless plank’ rings her on her mobile, asking for Suzie. Which would be fine if it weren’t for Sean (Sean Maguire) taking the call. Unsuspecting at first, Sean soon becomes troubled by who the caller might have been. Piqued by Ade’s (Tony Pitts) blossoming love life, Janet (Lesley Sharp) forces an argument that sees him moving in with his girlfriend permanently. And knowing that she doesn’t want to sell the house, Janet asks Dorothy (Judith Barker) if she would buy Ade out and move in with her. It seems like the perfect solution. But does Janet really want to be living with her mother at her age? Gill’s son Sammy has announced his engagement to girlfriend Orla. And whilst Gill thinks Orla is wonderful, her own experience of marriage and the fact that Sammy is only 19 does make her a little uneasy. The story of the week sees married man Eddie brutally murdered at home while his wife is away for the weekend. With all the hallmarks of a domestic, and son Daniel (Josh Bolt) in the frame, the case seems quite straightforward. But Eddie had a whole other life going on that made him vulnerable to exploitation.
Dominic Littlewood comes to the aid of ordinary people who are having a consumer nightmare. Plus, Rani Price hits the streets with some valuable advice about mobile phone contracts and an industry insider reveals some surprising secrets about how supermarkets make us spend, spend, spend.

Filmed in front of a live audience and hosted by Paul O’Grady, the show is inspired by the UK’s unwavering connection with animals. They protect us in war zones, keep our borders safe and allow the disabled to live independently. Some give us national glory in sporting events while others are the showbiz scene-stealers that make us laugh and cry in movies, on TV and on-line. From the brave and heroic to the funny and downright adorable, we are a nation of animal lovers and our animal charities, volunteers and welfare protection agencies are influential at local, national and even international level - and these too will be honoured on the night. The annual event will reward animals in categories that cover military service and bravery as well as conservation and therapy - with the majority of nominees suggested by the public and ultimately chosen as winners by a 30-strong jury made up of animal experts, charities and celebrities. The Internet Star Award will be chosen by the public via a vote on www.itv. com/britishanimalhonours. The ceremony will also feature some very special one off performances. Audiences will be treated to a choreographic set piece from theatrical spectacular War Horse, a dancing dog troupe led by Kennel Club trainer Gina Pink, and a showcase from the South Wales Police Dog section, demonstrating their elite training in skill and agility.

the circuit here, no matter for how long, and you leave the Island thinking you’ve had enough, then you should be aware of the somewhat mystic pull of this place. Leaving Tenerife and all the friends you

PRESENT
ANDY P worked in Tenerife for almost 12 years before returning to the UK four years ago. He has been toying with the idea of coming back for a while and, finally, last week he made the flight and was back. The first thing he said once he was met by friends at the airport was: “I’m home.” Andy was best known for his work as compere in bars like First & Last in Fanabe, and Murphy’s Law in Torviscas. But he will be remembered mainly for his time in the Full Monty on the Patch, working alongside Biba, a rap artiste from Senegal. Andy says: “It’ll take a couple of weeks to get back into the swing of things, but I’m really excited about starting again here in Tenerife.” He is available for work as cover compere or resident, and bars could do a lot worse than hiring this guy. He has a long track record here in The Reef, so you know he’s a “stayer”. His strengths lie in his extensive song repertoire and his ability to adlib in a most comedic way. Good Luck Andy P.
kindle what was once their passion, and existing artistes are collaborating and reinventing themselves in order to move with the changing times. This week, I would like to feature each of those dynamics.
FUTURE The Island always starts to receive the Newbys after Easter, and I’d say that seven out of 10 new artistes arriving are quite simply deluded about their ability to entertain.
As mentioned earlier, some artistes who have been here for a while are challenging themselves and getting together to form duos, trios and even live bands. Two guys who fall into this category are Luke Carey and Olly “Showbiz” Cusack. Luke is a singer from Hull and you may remember seeing him perform last summer with The Gleeks, a show that pays tribute to the popularity of hit TV show Glee. Olly returned from the UK recently and this new collaboration was formed. They are currently snapping up gigs everywhere and go out as Phenomenon. Luke is the main vocalist with Olly on guitar and vocals. These guys have some real chemistry on stage together. Coupling an exquisite talent from Olly on the guitar and personality-plus from both, their show, involving live music, is a winner all round. Their musical choice is perfect for Tenerife audiences and, I’m happy to say, I’ll be working with them every week on Monday nights at The Star Bar. Olly almost lost his sight after a vicious street attack two years ago and has had to undergo operations and visits to ophthalmic specialists in the UK and Tenerife. He was unable to work for quite a while and has asked me to pass on his sincere thanks to everyone who helped and supported him through what was a very difficult and emotional time. Both he and Luke are looking forward to entertaining some of you in the near future. And their mantra is: “Prepare To Be Phenomenised.”

time of year and, although we’ve just experienced the worst Easter for visitors that I can remember, new artistes are arriving in search of work and a dream lifestyle, old artistes are returning to re-
Generally, they like to talk you through how good their show is. Yawn! The opposite of this is new arrival Adam Maggs, known as Maggsy. He arrived in March with no idea of the mechanics of this circuit. His attitude towards work and how he promotes himself is very professional. He has already proved himself on many levels and he’s a good singer with the guts to have a go at anything if it’s requested. His style is definitely one that suits the karaoke bars here and he would be an ideal choice for anyone after a resident compere. His talent does not end there, because he has some great ideas on how to implement technology into his evening’s entertainment programme, utilising YouTube and funny videos from the net to hold people’s attention, as well as games and quizzes and, of course, karaoke. And there’s more. I bumped into him on Wednesday evening at The Brewers Droop, where he can be seen compering on Saturday nights. He had a crowd of people around him as he demonstrated his skills as a close-up magician. Not only can he sing and present but he can make a playing card, which somebody has randomly selected, signed and then returned to the pack and shuffled, appear seconds later in a sealed envelope inside his wallet in his back pocket. Amazeballs! Snap him up quickly because this guy is going to be a diamond of a compere for the first lucky venue quick enough to secure his services.

Rotations are second to none!
Brits on bikes again! R O TAT I O N S , the second-hand shop underneath the Viña Del Mar Hotel, near San Eugenio, is the largest store of its kind in Tenerife, proudly displaying its wares in a huge 300 squaremetre area. The company, which sells quality furniture and just about every conceivable item for the home, has been established for over 12 years in its current location. That also makes it the Island’s oldest-established second-hand shop. The shop has been a regular advertiser with the Canarian Weekly for many years, and current owner Gary Ord recently found a copy of the Canarian Weekly, issue 443 from March 2006, with a fullpage Rotations supplement. Gary, who has been at Rotations for three years and has owned it for the past two, says proudly: “The business is going from strength to strength. “We have a good customer relationship, and liaison with several local businesses, which
contribute to our success.” The lay-out of the shop and standard of furniture and items for sale are very much improved, and Rotations is run on a daily basis by Gary and Dave, who both originate from West Yorkshire. They are Rugby League fans of Bradford Bulls & Castleford Tigers respectively, and the banter between these Yorkshiremen keep their customers entertained handsomely. Rotations is fully stocked with quality items you would need for your home or rental property. In fact, you can fit out your property completely with good, value-for-money, second-hand items there. The company also buys and sells all household, bar and cafe items, at fair, competitive prices, and it specialises in full clearances. Other services offered are removals and deliveries, upholstery cleaning, and maintenance services (decorating, electrical and plumbing). Free, no-obligation quotes are available. Rotations are also proud to sponsor Canarian Weekly’s “Free Ads” page (see page 50).

AFTER last year’s summer of sport, and an increased number of cycling heroes for the nation, Britain’s love of cycling is on a high. As if to prove the point, new research from Mintel reveals that in the last year alone, the number of bike-riders in the UK has risen from just 34% of the population in January 2012 to four in 10 (41%) in November 2012. Today, an impressive 50% of British men are taking to their bikes, while London (53%) is the cycling capital of the nation. And as the number of cyclists continues to rise, Mintel’s research shows that 6% of British consumers (amounting to 3.1 million Brits) are taking to two wheels “most days”. While 8% go cycling two or three days a week, the same number cycle on a weekly basis. Indeed, in terms of weekly participation, the figure rises to more than 22% of consumers - adding up to over 11 million bike loving Brits. In terms of increased participation, most of the growth in cycling has occurred among those who cycle 2-3 days a week - increasing from 6% in January 2012 to 8% in the November. Michael Oliver, Senior Leisure Analyst at Mintel, says: “Interest in cycling continues to grow, with a combination of factors contributing to consumers seeing cycling in a different light. “Undoubtedly, there is considerable momentum behind bikes at the moment, driven by high-profile sporting
successes in the Tour de France and Olympics, rising fuel prices and higher public transport costs. “As an environmentally-friendly type of outdoor exercise, cycling is very much in trend.” The market for bicycles, valued at £705 million last year, was up from £650 million in 2011. But while bike sales have risen, the market has not performed as well as might have been expected by some in the industry, because of adverse weather in the second half of the year. Despite slower-thanexpected growth, value increase in the market reflects a continued shift towards the more premium-priced road bikes, as well as a recovery in sales through the Cycle to Work scheme. But while recent growth has been somewhat staid, the wheels are in motion for a boom in sales because Mintel forecasts that the market will grow a spectacular 23% in the next five years, to reach £869 million by 2017. “While there is a lot of positive sentiment surrounding cycling at the moment, there has yet to be a significant jump in sales of new bicycles,” says Mintel’s Michael. “There are several factors contributing to slower-than-expected growth. There’s a weakness of economy and consumer confidence, plus poor weather in the second half of 2012. “Also, anecdotal evidence suggests that a lot of people taking up cycling in 2012 were recommissioning old cycles they already owned and not buying new.” While the cycling bug grips the nation, previous Mintel research has found that 49% of Brits agree that it is too dan-
gerous to ride a bicycle on the road, those living in London being the most likely to agree with this statement (58%). A further 41% of Brits say that dedicated lanes or routes would encourage them to cycle more often (peaking at 46% in London), “The tide appears to have turned in central and local government in terms of their attitudes towards the provision of cycling facilities,” says Michael. “This could result in making cycling a lot safer, particularly in towns and cities. “If this happens, the evidence from several trial schemes around the country shows that there will be strong growth in cycling usage, and this can only be good for sales of new bicycles in the long term. “The recent announcement by London Mayor Boris Johnson of a 10-year, £913-million plan to make cycling in the capital safer - including an east-west “Crossrail for cyclists”, backroad “quietways” and a “grid” of central London cycling routes - is a bold statement of intent and has been positively received by cycling bodies and London cyclists.” Leisure riding is the most popular type of cycling, with two-thirds of cyclists going out at the weekends, either alone or in a group. General-purpose riding, such as going to the shops or visiting friends, is also extremely prevalent with 40% cycling for this reason. Meanwhile, 25% of cyclists use a bicycle to commute and 13% use a bicycle to go to their place of education. Offroad riding is a comparatively minor branch of the sport at 13%.
While different types of buyers look for different qualities in a bicycle, the biggest differences are evident between genders. Men are notably more likely than women to attach importance to the specification and equipment on a bicycle (36% v 27%) and the brand (24% v 18%) is also important to them. In contrast, women are much more concerned than men about a bicycle being an affordable price (80% v 74%), its styling, colour or décor (29% v 19%) and the quality of aftersales service (17% v 12%). Michael adds: “Overall, perhaps the most surprising aspect is the lack of importance attached to brand, with price, specification and styling, colour or décor being seen as more important than whether a bicycle is a brand that the potential buyer is familiar with. “To a certain extent, this reflects the lack of investment in branding by the major suppliers and indicates that there is the potential for a supplier to really make itself the brand that stands out, perhaps through capitalising on its association with one of the big British cycling stars of the moment. “It also provides encouragement for new brands because it demonstrates that a well-priced, wellspecified, well-designed bicycle will always sell, regardless of whether or not people have heard of the brand.” However, it’s not all about Brits going wheely mad for cycling. While a 33% of them who have ridden in the past would consider doing so again, 18% of former cyclists are resigned to a bike-free future.

WASABI By David Hudgell PEOPLE often ask me what should I grow. The first answer would be to grow things that you like, either those you enjoy looking at – trees, shrubs and flowers etc, or, edibles that you like to eat. There’s no need to grow fields and fields of potatoes, but perhaps try and grow something which is rare, expensive in the shops or is better tasting when freshly cut. One such vegetable which I think would be good to grow, but a little difficult here is Wasabi. Wasabi has become a watchword on menus on the past 18 months. It’s a member of the Brassicaceae family along with cabbages, mustard and horseradish but is native to Japan. Ironically, it’s sometimes called Japanese horseradish. Its root is
used as a condiment and has an extremely strong flavour. It’s a hotness more akin to that of a hot mustard than that of a chilli pepper. Wasabi is generally sold either as a root which is very finely grated before use, as dried powder in large quantities, or as
a ready-to-use paste in tubes similar to travel toothpaste tubes. Once the plant’s root is grated for use it loses its flavour in 15 minutes. Wasabi is difficult to cultivate, and that makes it quite expensive. Due to its high cost, a common substitute is a mixture of horseradish, mustard, starch and green food coloring. Outside of Japan, it is rare to find real wasabi plants. Wasabi Plant So growing your own is the perfect way to ensure you get an authentic Japanese experience. As well as the potent
Gardening jobs: The week ahead SPRING flowering plants such as primroses and pansies should still be looked after by removing any deadheads or fading flowerheads to encourage further flowers. Fill gaps in flower beds with primulas and polyanthus Prune forsythia and flowering currants as soon as flowers have faded Plant out groups of gladioli in borders Sow sweet peas directly outside at the base of obelisks or supports Sow seeds of dwarf and climbing beans in deep pots or cardboard toilet roll tubes filled with compost. Plant new asparagus beds Continue planting potatoes, shallots and onion sets
Feed spring cabbage with a high-nitrogen fertiliser Remove forcing jars from rhubarb plants and let them grow uncovered Sow seeds of the following crops outside carrots, beetroot, broad beans, salad onions, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, spinach, leeks, lettuce, rocket, coriander, mixed salad or stir fry leaves, radish, turnip, peas and mangetout, lettuce and Swiss chard Spread a compost mulch around border plants to suppress weeds Clean out bird baths and top up with fresh water Check tree ties are not too tight or cutting into bark, and loosen if necessary Cut back any overgrown ivy
stem, the beautiful lily pad shaped leaves have a gentler wasabi tang and are fantastic wrapped around raw or smoked salmon with pickled ginger and a slick of cream cheese; exotic hors d’oeuvres your friends will never have tried before! Wasabi prefers overcast, damp, cooler weather, not ideal for Tenerife but try it and see how you get on. Plant in a damp, shady spot and keep well watered. You can harvest the leaves after a year but the stems take a little longer so you may be as well to purchase a more established plant.
AS THE WEATHER GETS WARMER A WIDE RANGE OF HARDY ANNUALS CAN BE SOWN INTO THEIR FLOWERING POSITIONS AND THESE INCLUDE CORNFLOWER, COSMEA AND ECHIUM. Cornflower A re-selected and improved variety with good double flowers in various shades of blue, most with attractive frosted white edges. Long stems make it an ideal flower for cutting. Height 75cm (30”). Cornflower is a ‘cottage garden’ favourite if you sow now you’ll see flowers as early as June. Or, sow during August-September to flower June-July the following year. Ideal for beds and borders and pots. The beauty of cornflowers is that they’re drought resistant, preferring full sun or partial shade

Cosmea Now is an ideal time to sow for bright attractive flowers from July onwards. They’re larger plants ideal for the back of a border. Excellent for the mixed border, and an economical choice to fill large areas. With fernlike foliage Cosmea is ideal for beds and borders. Drought resistant. Prefers full sun.
Echium A bright mixture of white, pink, rose, carmine, mauve blue and purple. Beautiful flowers like upturned bells, on bushy plants. Sow March-May outdoors for flowers J u n e - S e p t e m b e r, or sow AugustSeptember to flower May-July the following year. Average Growing Height: 21-30CM Ideal for beds and borders. THINK you have lost it now that you’re over 40? Well, here are some women who demonstrate quite the opposite. They state loud and clear that being 40 or more doesn’t mean you have to hide away in a corner and start digging out your rollers. To me, women of this age group seem to want to experiment a little more. It’s as though they now seem more confident in themselves and worry less about what others think. I’m a great believer that you should strive to look a little younger than your true years - not overdoing it and scaring small children, but trying not to get dragged into Little-Old-Lady-Land just yet. The examples I’ve used are all women over 40 yet, their hair helps them maintain a more youthful look. Yet there is nothing fussy about their hair. It has not taken them hours to do, but they all look fabulous. Putting too much work into styling your hair always looks dated. Backcombing and lac-

quer give a solid appearance, which just pile on the years. After a certain age, you should go for casual and simple - nothing really below the shoulders and always with colour to blend away those white hairs. It makes me feel a little sad that sometimes, a few of you out there just give up with your image in the belief that no one is interested, that no one is going to give your hair and image a second glance. Well, we at ROBOT do! As should your stylist! I can’t think of anything more that makes my day worthwhile
than taking a few years off someone with just a cut or colour. After your eyes, then teeth the third thing people notice about you is YOUR HAIR! Don’t let yourself down by skipping on that haircut or not touching-up your roots because your hair matters. And not just when you go out, either. Your hair should have only one “day off ” a week, so don’t let me see you with your “Tenerife ponytail”! Above all else, try to keep things simple. Don’t over-complicate things with the cut or styling, keep on top of your cuts, and never allow your colour to show too much of the roots. Unless, of course, you are planning an appearance on Jeremy Kyle!
Running has been linked with reduced risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, coronary heart disease and high cholesterol. It was originally believed that intense exercise provided greater benefit than walking. But this new AHA study suggests they are of equal value. So long as the energy used is equivalent to that exerted during a run, say scientists, the health benefits are the
same. However, walkers do need to travel the same distance in order to attain similar benefits, which means it will take them longer time to get the same health boost as runners. The six-year AHA study analysed 15,045 walkers and 33,060 runners. Over time, the runners’ risk of high blood pressure dropped 4.2%, compared with the walkers’ 7% decrease. Risk of high cholesterol fell 4.3% for runners and 7% for walkers. Runners’
risk of diabetes and heart disease dropped 12.1% and 4.5%, compared with walkers’ 12.3% and 9.3% respectively. Researchers say the results are equivalent, considering the different make-up of the two groups. But Doireann Maddock, from the British Heart Foundation, said: “Whether it’s walking, jogging or running, staying active will help control your weight, reduce blood pressure and cholesterol – and improve your mental health!”
Red meat so rash for hearts A CHEMICAL found in red meat has enlightened US scientists as to why eating too much steak, mince and bacon is bad for the heart. A study in the Nature Medicine journal showed that carnitine in red meat was broken down by bacteria in the gut. This kicked off a chain of events, which resulted in higher levels of cholesterol, and an increased risk of heart disease. Dieticians warned that there might be a risk to people taking carnitine supplements. There has been a wealth of studies suggesting that eating red meat regularly could
be damaging to health. The UK Government recommends eating no more than 70g of red or processed meat a day, which is the equivalent of two slices of bacon. Saturated fat and the way processed meat is preserved are thought to contribute to heart problems. However, this was not thought to be the whole story. “The cholesterol and saturated fat content of lean, red meat is not that high,” lead researcher Dr Stanley Hazen told the BBC. “There’s something else contributing to increases in cardiovascular risk.” Experiments on mice
and people showed that bacteria in the gut could eat carnitine, which was broken down into a gas and then converted in the liver to a chemical called TMAO. In the study, TMAO was strongly linked with the build-up of fatty deposits in blood vessels, which can lead to heart disease and death. Dr Hazen, from the Cleveland Clinic, said TMAO was often ignored, adding: “It may be a waste product, but it is significantly influencing cholesterol metabolism, and the net effect leads to an accumulation of cholesterol. “The findings support the idea that less red meat is better. I used to have red meat five days out of seven, but I have cut it way back to less than once every two weeks or so.” He said the findings raised the idea of using a probiotic yogurt to change the balance of bacteria in the gut. Reducing the number of bacteria that feed on carnitine would, in theory at least, reduce the health risks of red meat, he believes. Vegetarians naturally have fewer bacteria which are able to break down carnitine than meat-eaters.

Secret to long life? By Val Sainsbury IT has been touted as a cure-all for diabetes, dementia, heart disease, hearing loss and could even hold the key to long life. But researchers warn that the “miraculous” health benefits of red wine cannot be reaped if you are obese. Resveratrol, the active compound found in the skins of red grapes and cocoa, is an antioxidant produced by plants to help protect them from extreme environments. It also blocks the effects of ultra-violet sunlight, infections and temperature changes and could one day enable you to live up to 150 years of age! The research, published in the journal Diabetes, found that
although test-tube studies had suggested that resveratrol had an effect on obesity, diabetes, high blood-pressure and blood cholesterol, it had no effect on
24 obese, but otherwise healthy men. The study, carried out by Denmark’s Aarhus University Hospital, gave 12 men high-dose supplements of the
substance, and another 12 men a placebo for four weeks. Over this period, each participant’s insulin sensitivity, blood pressure, cholesterol, and resting energy expenditure were monitored. Researchers found that there was an insignificant decrease in in-
sulin sensitivity, and no change in blood pressure, cholesterol and resting energy expenditure. “The lack of effect disagrees with previous data obtained, and it raises doubts about the justification of resveratrol as a human nutritional supplement,”
said the scientists. The research contradicts previous data showing that the life of lab rodents - including old, fat, and even diabetic mice - could be extended by supplementing the diet with the chemical. It was presumed that the chemical could work in the same way for humans. Indeed, on one proponent of resveratrol, Harvard Medical School’s Dr David Sinclair has claimed that the chemical will eventually lead to the development of drugs which will enable humans to live until 150! Last month, he and his team showed that resveratrol possesses potent, anti-ageing effects because it stimulates the production of a substance called SIRT1. The serum blocks ageing and disease by speeding up a person’s cell energy production. “Things are looking promising,” said Dr Sinclair. “We’re finding that ageing isn’t the irreversible affliction we thought it was, but we won’t get much further without more research.”
YET ANOTHER WAY TO GET DIABETES A DROP in levels of the sleep hormone melatonin has been linked to an increased risk of onset diabetes in adults. Research in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that 370 women with
12th April - 18th April 2013
diabetes were compared with 370 women of the same race and age without the disease. Study researchers found participants with diabetes produced low levels of melatonin at night, compared with the control group
without diabetes. Melatonin is produced by the brain during sleep, when its levels are higher in blood, to help regulate the circadian rhythm or “body clock”. “It’s the first time an independent association has been established between nocturnal melatonin secretion and type two diabetes risk,” said Ciaran McMullan, from the Renal Division and Kidney Clinical Research in Boston. The research found that participants who produced a low level of melatonin at night were twice as likely to develop diabetes against those who produced a high level of the hormone. Melatonin secretion varied sharply between the participants, with some producing nearly five times as much as the lowest.

A Duchess launch for the Royal Princess ALAN BUCKELEW, President and chief of Princess Cruises, has gone right to the top for someone to name the latest addition to the company’s fleet. Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, will Christen the Royal Princess at a special ceremony in Southampton on Thursday, 13th June. It will be the highlight of week-long inaugural celebrations to welcome the vessel into service. The spectacular ceremony will uphold the great British ship-naming traditions, including the blessing, a performance by the Royal Marines Band and the pipers of the Irish Guards, together with contemporary highlights. Mr Buckelew said: “It is a great honour for Princess Cruises that Her Royal Highness has accepted our invitation to become Godmother to Royal Princess. “We are delighted that she will launch our new ship, and I can think of no better way to celebrate our company’s British heritage and our commitment to the country.” Royal Princess will arrive on Friday, 7th June at Southampton’s Ocean Terminal, where she will begin a series
of events for customers and travel agents, including a special naming gala on Wednesday, 12th June. The ship’s inaugural celebrations will conclude with her maiden voyage four days later. The 3,600-passenger Royal Princess is a newgeneration ship with many special features. Among them will be a greatly expanded atrium, the social hub of the ship; an over-water SeaWalk, a top-deck, glass-bottomed walkway extending 28 feet beyond the edge of the ship; plush, private poolside cabanas that appear to be floating on water; the new Princess Live! television studio; the largest pastry shop at sea and balconies on all outside staterooms. It also has a special Chef’s Table Lumiere - a private dining experience that surrounds diners in a curtain of light; The inaugural period of Royal Princess also includes two short preview cruises prior to and following the naming. After her maiden voyage, the ship will sail Grand Mediterranean cruises throughout the summer, followed by Eastern Caribbean cruises beginning in the autumn. More information and video previews of the ship are available at www.princess.com/royalprincess.
EASYJET TO INTRODUCE NEW SEATS EASYJET is introducing new, lightweight and more comfortable seats onboard all of its new aircraft. The first of 14 new aircraft with the new seats onboard was delivered this week. The look of the cabin has also been redesigned to create a more modern feel. The new seat cover is grey with orange accents and is complimented by a new carpet and specially designed easyJet orange aisle lighting. The SL3510 seat, ergonomically designed and manufactured by Recaro, optimises a combination of foams to provide the best comfort and support for the passenger. The backrest is
Page 44
at a 15 degree angle for a relaxed seating position and the slimmer backrest provides more space for passengers. As well as the customer benefits the new seat will also improve fuel efficiency and reduce C02 emissions due to the seat being lighter. Peter Duffy, Marketing Director for easyJet, commented: “easyJet has chosen the Recaro seat because we really believe that it will provide a more comfortable flight and that our passengers will notice the difference. “It has been ergonomically designed with the comfort of the passenger top of mind so the backrest angle is predefined for a relaxed sitting position and the seat is designed to provide more space for passengers. easyJet’s new seat selection also has
the passengers’ wallets in mind - the lighter weight brings fuel savings which in turn enables us to continue to maintain our low fares – even when fuel prices remain at historic highs.” Recaro, based in Germany, is a global supplier of premium aircraft seats. The new seats offer greater simplicity with over 100 fewer parts. The Recaro developers have focused on the seat’s ergonomic qualities. The netting in the aluminum frame conforms to the shape of the passenger’s spine. Because of the slim backrest, the seat also offers a maximum of space, meaning that passengers enjoy a very comfortable flight. Recaro Aircraft Seating has won several awards for this innovative and environmen-
tally sustainable seat development, including the industry’s Crystal Cabin Award in the “Industrial Design/Interior Concept” category. The new, lightweight seat is just one example of easyJet’s commitment to reducing CO2 emissions. The airline has always scrutinised all aspects of its flying to ensure it operates in the most efficient way. Due to easyJet’s simple, efficient operations an easyJet passenger’s carbon footprint is already 22% less than a passenger on a traditional airline flying on the same route and aircraft. Along with the new seat easyJet is also introducing lightweight trolleys onboard as well as aerodynamic improvements like sharklets, an enlarged wing tip which makes the wing more efficient.

A FIVE-STAR DACIA MAX By Jav THEY were once regarded as a little-known Romanian motor manufacturer, supplying Eastern Europeans in the main with their quirky little cars. Since their takeover by Renault, however, in 1999, Dacia have been making steady progress in the UK market and beyond as a subsidiary of the renowned French firm. They’re cheap, they’re cheerful (well, to a degree), and January 2012 saw the brand relaunched in Britain, having proved successful in many Eastern European countries including Russia. Twelve months on and their super SUV Duster
was delivered to the company’s UK audience at a rock-bottom, basic price of under £9,000. And though it has its critics, a slightly more upgraded Duster model is proving extremely popular - even with one of the leading rental companies in Tenerife! Now, Dacia have launched their new Logan MCV Estate, with prices starting from £6,995 (8,240 euros). And that makes it the cheapest estate car you can buy in the UK, at £4,000 less than an entry-level Skoda Fabia Estate. To be fair, it’s a tidylooking motor for that price and I can see plenty of drivers, whose pockets aren’t exactly lined, taking a good look, especially those with families. The Logan MCV (Maximum Capacity Vehicle) joins the Dacia line-up of Sandero, Sandero Stepway and Duster, and
becomes the Renault budget brand’s fourth model. The MCV, essentially a five-seater estate version of the Sandero, features a 573-litre boot with the seats up, which swells to 1,518 litres with the seats down and that makes it 253 and 318 litres bigger respectively than the Sandero hatchback – and more spacious than the Ford Focus Estate. As with the rest of the Dacia range, three trim levels are available - Access, Ambiance and Laureate -and two petrol and one diesel engine are on offer. The Logan MCV Access includes body-coloured bumpers, 15-inch steel wheels, ABS, traction control and four airbags and can be had only with the tried and tested 74bhp 1.2-litre petrol engine. For an extra £600, you can upgrade to the MCV Ambiance, which adds
a radio/CD player, USB input, Bluetooth, remote central locking and electric front windows. The top-spec Logan MCV Laureate, which starts at £8,995, is expected to be the biggest seller in the UK. It includes air-conditioning, electric door mirrors, cruise-control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, electric rear windows and front fog lights. Both the Ambiance and Laureate are available with the choice of the 89bhp 0.9-litre three-cylinder petrol and 89bhp 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel, in addition to the 1.2 petrol. Despite the small engines, however, Renault are anxious to point out that the heaviest Logan MCV weighs just 1,090kg. Options include a seven-inch touchscreen satnav (£250), rear parking sensors (£250) and leather upholstery (£600) on Laureate models. On Ambiance and Lauriate models, metallic paint costs £495 and 15inch alloys are £425. On the economy front, the Logan MCV ranges from a respectable 48.7mpg for the 1.2 to a healthy 74.3 for the diesel. The turbo petrol returns 56.5mpg. Orders for the Logan MCV are being taken by Dacia dealers now, with the first cars scheduled to arrive in July.
Just try going to work on an egg! SAY hello to the car of tomorrow, but don’t even begin to look for the front and back wheels because it hasn’t any! Okay, there are two at the rear at the moment, but that’s because it is in its early development stage and they are there to prevent Hyundai’s new concept tipping from side to side. The E4U is an eggshaped, open-topped, single-person transport similar to a Segway, and Hyundai have great hopes that it will eventually become a much-desired city car. Instead of a traditional two-wheel Segway design, however, the E4U uses a “rotating semi-spherical part” like the lower half of a
ball, which is constantly spinning. The machine is static when standing vertically, and moves at about walking speed when tilted forward. Hyundai’s idea is to have a vehicle which can move in multiple directions without turning. And they are trying desperately hard to succeed! Their incredible dream was unveiled at the recent Seoul Motor Show after just four months in the design shop. So you can imagine just much the project will advance in the next few months. Don’t laugh, because that could be you on your way to work in the next year or two.
Fisker about to suffer power failure CALIFORNIAN electric car-maker Fisker, who off-loaded several staff members last week, will probably have the plug pulled soon. Production of the company’s exciting £65,000 Karma model, which is made by Valmet in Finland, was suspended last July and sadly, Fisker is on the verge of bankruptcy. Sources say Fisker were set to start making capital repayments on a US Government loan at the end of this month. The company were offered up to £350m in government loans, but
payments were suspended last May after Fisker had drawn down around £131m. Yet they claimed to have delivered nearly 1,800 Kamas by the end of last year. Fisker spent much of last year looking for new sources of investment, but they have also been hit by a number of blows, some beyond their control. Some early production models had to be recalled and repaired, while A123 Systems, the company’s battery supplier, folded in 2012. Last October, around 300 Karmas were de-

stroyed when Hurricane Sandy flooded the dockside at Port Newark in New Jersey. And last month, 49-year-old founder Henrik Fisker resigned. It began life in 2007, founded by ex-Aston and BMW designer Fisker and Bernhard Koehler. The Karma saloon was first shown in 2009 but didn’t go on sale until autumn 2011. Work on the Fisker Atlantic sports-hatch version of the Karma, and on Project Nina (a 5-series-size car that was to have been built in the US), was also suspended last year.

Crazy criticism stuns Cervera after his January move from Guijuelo and offers the more complete package. He is a fine passer of the ball, likes a tackle and has a sweet left foot. But he will certainly not be match-sharp and doesn’t have a big physical presence. Which means …Yeray! Maybe Cervera will surprise us all and play Cristo Martin, or maybe drop Luismi Loro back? But since we have no clue, neither will Sporting B’s manager, which is no bad thing. Meanwhile Cervera has promoted another kid from the B team. Franco has spent the week training with the first team and, by all accounts, has impressed. The left-back is behind Llorente and the injured Jesus, but the fact that he has been stepped up is significant. Tenerife may have a few dead rubbers in a month’s time, and Franco may yet get the nod. Finally, well done to CD Marino, who refuse to roll over and die. Another home win on Sunday and another clean sheet. If only they had done this in January!
TENERIFE are potentially just four games away from clinching top spot in this league, and then just 180 minutes away from promotion. But it seems that is still not good enough for some people. In the same way that Nigel Adkins’ superb job of taking Southampton from mid-table League 1 to mid-table Premiership was not appreciated; nor Brian McDermott’s progress at Reading. It is hard to imagine what more Alvaro Cervera can do with this team and squad. He’s had Tenerife top of the table for all but two matches, blooded the youngsters and improved the players he has been asked to coach. Oh, sorry. No, he has not been sacked. But judging from some of the newspaper columnists and internet “fan” sites, he should be. I honestly don’t get it. Tenerife are a big fish in a small pond, but we are not Barcelona. We have a long and proud tradition, but we are not Real Madrid. I mean, even Rangers have lost games in the Scottish Division Three this season. Last Sunday, Tenerife returned from the mainland with a perfectlyacceptable point at Luanco. They didn’t play well, fell behind in the first half, but still came back with something. Aridane’s second-half equaliser was deserved, and they had chances to have won the game. Second-place Leganes lost, so it was a point gained. Yet still the writers stuck the knife in. Former Tenerife boss Jose Luis Oltra said

this week that he knew what Cervera was going through: “I am not surprised because I know the Island,” he said. “I know exactly what it is like. Cervera has had 32 games, and only twice he has not been top? That’s crazy! The leader (manager) must have support. From everyone. He has played a settled side and is getting the best out of the players as the results show. I lived in Tenerife and when the results were good, it was great. But when they were not? Alvaro needs to know that everyone is supporting him. Which I hope they are.” Fine words from a man who will be back in the Heliodoro dug-out some day soon. Back on the pitch, Tenerife are half-a-dozen points clear, but their head-to-head record with Leganes means, in reality, it’s a seven-point advantage.
And this weekend they host Sporting Gijon B, who should be there for the taking. Their season is as good as over and it should be another comfortable three points. The big question is, who replaces Inigo Ros in central midfield? Ros has been my player of the season and he was man of the match against Lucano, but a booking sees him suspended. There are three candidates and they all have a shout. There is an argument that Yeray is favourite. The likeable local lad has done okay this season, and he is starting to look like a decent prospect. But he is not the same sort of player as Ros. He likes to bound forward and often gets caught ball-watching. With Alberto even younger, Cervera may go for a bit more experience. Which means … David Medina. He has done little wrong this season and has been unlucky to
lose his shirt because of injury, and the form of the replacements. But Medina hasn’t played for a while and there is a feeling that the team Segunda B
have moved on. And while he gets his foot in, he’s not exactly a passer. Which means … Fran Ochoa. He started well
