PLANS for a new golf course in Guia de Isora are still in their infancy, but Mayor Pedro Martin has investors lined up already.

“The tourism facilities available here in the municipality will be reinforced once the construction of a new course is complete,” said the Mayor this week. He would not be drawn on the location, and admitted the plans

course at Ritz Carlton’s Abama. The Dave Thomasdesigned Abama course is widely regarded as a great challenge, rambling over 6,271 metres of ever-changing terrain. And it features 22 lakes, linked by Continued on page 3.

Guia in gear for golf? Continued from front. impressive waterfalls, white-sand bunkers, and 25,000 palm trees. With any new project there are sceptics, and one of the issues with a gleaming green course is water. During last year’s atrocious forest fires here on the Island, affected residents in Vilaflor complained about water shortages because it was “being sent down the hill to feed the golf courses”. But Mayor Martin is keen to point out the new golf course would not deplete existing water resources, and that any additional requirements would be made available from desalinated sea water. Does this mean that the new course will have its very own desalination plant, and is dependent on this infrastructure development? Guia de Isora’s objec-

tive is that a new golf course in the municipality would complement the existing tourist offers and, thus, increase the number of visitors. As to whether accommodation would be part of the new golf venue, he said: “There are a very limited number of hotels that fit the General Management Plan (PGO) and we have only three or four more

areas where they could develop luxury accommodation.” The rumour circulating for many years is that a hotel and golf course would be built on the same road as the existing Abama course: hotel on the sea side, golf course to the right. However, that was dependent on infrastructure elements such as completion of the new

ring road, and the building of an independent desalination plant. Why the issue has arisen again for discussion is not clear, but one can only assume that it’s because the Island is continually improving and promoting itself as a quality, five-star destination with accommodation, flights and activities to boot. Golf is an activity that matches the demographic of Tenerife visitors. The average age of our tourists is 47 and each year, 1.6 million Brits alone flood to the tiny rock in the Atlantic. Over half the visitors enjoy at least one activity while here - and in February alone, 379,726 visitors descended on Tenerife. Unfortunately, a new golf course is not a quick fix to the tourist offer, because the Guia de Isora complex will take at least 3-4 years to build.

Tenerife duo find their voice THE third week of The Voice saw Tenerife’s own Shelley Atkinson and Maxine Jack, as duo Diva, harmonising well on Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion’s duet Tell Him. Singers Shelley from Newcastle and Scot Maxine Jack, who

now also lives in the North East, are best remembered for their time in Tenerife by both winning the Tenerife Entertainment Award for Best Female Singer, Shelley in 2006 and Maxine in 2007. The pair appeared on BBC’s The Voice last weekend and are now part of Team Tom, after selecting Sir Tom Jones as their mentor over the other coaches. After the blind auditions have finished you will be able to see Diva in the next round in the ‘singing battles’, as they aim to progress further in the competition.

BREAKTHROUGH FOR MARATHON BOMBING? INVESTIGATORS handling Monday’s Boston Marathon bombings believe they have made a breakthrough into the massacre, which left three people dead. and more than 170 injured. They have an image of a potential suspect taken from security footage before Monday’s deadly assault. The picture is believed to have come from CCTV video taken before the twin attacks, in what could be the biggest breakthrough in the case. It apparently shows a man carrying and, possibly, dropping a black bag at the second bomb scene on Boylston Street, outside the Forum restaurant, and then walking away. The surveillance video is believed to have been taken at the Lord and Taylor department store, between the sites of the two blasts, which were seconds and about 100

metres apart on the same road. The news came as police said yesterday (Thursday) that no one had been arrested, despite reports in the US media that a suspect was in custody. Those who died were eight-year-old Martin Richard, who was watching with his family at the finish line; restaurant manager Krystle Campbell, 29,

19th April - 25th April 2013

and Chinese graduate student Lu Lingzi, who was studying at Boston University. American President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle attended an inter-faith service at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross yesterday in Boston. The Associated Press earlier claimed a lawenforcement official had said a detained person was set to appear at

the local federal court. Other media outlets also reported an arrest. But the FBI, together with the US attorney’s office in Boston and the police, disputed that. The Boston Police Department recorded on Twitter: “Despite reports to the contrary, there has not been an arrest in the Marathon attack.” The FBI also said there had been “no arrests

made”, and urged the media to be cautious. Boston City Council president Stephen Murphy, who was 50 yards from one of the explosions, told Sky News the investigation could take a long time. “There were tens of thousands of people out there on Boylston Street, and so much movement, and so much going on - and so much to look at. “And

everybody’s emailing, texting tips, to law enforcement. People are poring over that.” A sequence of photographs taken by a local businessman Ben Thorndike show a man in burned clothes fleeing from the scene immediately after the twin blast. “I was struck by this individual,” he told ABC News. “Everyone else in the photo is on the ground, bent over, holding their ears, appearing to be in shock, immobile. But this one individual is exactly the opposite.” The explosive devices, made from pressure cookers hidden inside duffel bags packed with nails, shards of metal and ball-bearings, were placed on the ground near the Marathon finishing line. Scores of victims are still being treated in hospital, many with serious injuries, and 17 people, one as young as five, were still in a critical condition as we went to press last night.

Stabbing leads to arrest

SANTA CRUZ police have arrested a 49-yearold man accused of stabbing a member of his family, as well as stealing several items from a local sports centre. Following the arrest, police searched his house and found many items thought to be stolen. He was remanded in custody awaiting a court appearance.

An even biggest buzz!

IN last week’s Canarian Weekly, we carried the story of a derelict house in La Gomera, which had been cordoned off because there was an enormous wasps’ nest inside. The authorities were alerted by neighbours to the seven-metre-long nest, which contains millions of wasps. The nest is unique because of its size, and it is thought that the wasps came to the island from Morocco. It is now believed to be the largest nest of wasps in the world, surpassing the previous record set in Waimaukau, New Zealand, back in April 1963 by one measuring 3.7m long.

Pescanova in hot water

ONE of the largest fishing groups in the world, Pescanova, filed for insolvency on Monday with debts of at least 1.5 billion euros. The Vigo-based company, in Spain’s northwestern Galicia region, employs about 1,000 people locally and 10,000 across the world, who catch, process and package fish on factory ships. One Spaniard punned on Twitter that the company had been doomed from the day it chose its name: “Pesca no va”, or in English, “Fishing isn’t working out.”

THIS week we have reached the monumental milestone of our 800th edition, which is a mighty fine achievement.

The Canarian Weekly was established way back in 1997; a momentous year for many reasons, including a landslide General Election victory for the Labour Party under Tony Blair, and the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. On a lighter note, it was the same year that the children’s TV programme Teletubbies first aired, and the same year that a new-style of 50p coin was introduced in Britain. The Canarian Weekly or the ‘Canarian’ as we affectionately term it here in the office, is produced every week for both residents and tourists alike. Our circulation is independently audited

and covers the majority of the south of the island. We have over 300 delivery points and print thousands of copies every week. I appreciate at times, especially during the winter months, that copies of the Canarian become difficult to obtain because of the influx of swallows, and the popularity of the television guide. That’s why the Canarian is available in other formats. The stories are added to our website www.canarianweekly. com and it’s available to read electronically on the issuu platform www. issuu.com/canarianweekly - where you can actually turn the electronic page. Plus, we add more immediate news on to our social media - Facebook and Twitter - so why not follow us? www.facebook.com/canarianweekly or @canarianweekly. Until next week…

English Time is a time for everyone IN its first six months on air English Time, which is broadcast twice weekly on Radio Sur Adeje, 107.9fm, from 1 to 1.30, has established itself as an informative and welcome part of the ex-pat day.

The Adeje mayor said he was “very happy with the way the programme has developed and its success, particularly as we have noticed that it’s not just foreign residents who are listening, but a lot of Spanish residents are also tuning into English Time and using the programme to help improve their English”. According to presenter Clio O’Flynn, an Irish woman resident in the Adeje village of Callao Salvaje, it has been a fascinating, challenging and rewarding first six months. “The programme has already established some excellent regular contributors, as well as inputs from journalists based here, Spanish, British and Irish, freelance and staff from national and local publications such as Island Connections Canarian Weekly and Diario de Avisos, and I am always delighted to welcome the local talent onto the programme”. The British and Irish Consuls Steve Jones and Ward Woods, as well as Embassy staff have also appeared on the programme, as has the Irish Ambassador to Spain Mr Justin Harman, on the eve of Ireland’s accession to the presidency of the EU. Tenerife’s Cabildo president Ricardo Melchior was also one of the many welcome guests. However the programme is very focused on news and views from Adeje and South Tenerife, and members of the Adeje council are regular contributors, in English, to the programme, as are mem-

bers of other neighbouring councils and the Tenerife Cabildo. The programme, in line with the policy of Radio Sur Adeje, sees itself very much as a public service provider, and in recent weeks devoted time to bringing listeners information on making tax returns, the new legislation covering the declaration of overseas assets, local and insular assistance during strikes or weather disruptions as well as clarifying issues such as driving licence renewal and most recently confusion over a by law regarding laundry and barbecues on balconies. English Time is continuing to grow and develop and there is also now a blog, Adeje English Time (http:// englishtimeadeje. com/) and a facebook page where people can interact with the programme in English. The programme is also beginning a series that will focus on new businesses in Adeje, particulary those that are linked to the development of tourism and involve ex-pats. The programme also depends greatly upon the advice and help of the Adeje council team and the Radio Sur Adeje personnel. “I have been made feel extremely welcome and helped in every possible way during these first six months by the team”, said Clio O’Flynn.

If you would like to contact English Time please ‘like’ the Facebook page, visit the blog, or listen to the

programme on Mondays and Thursdays, on Radio Sur Adeje, 107.9fm and get in touch.

New Gatwick to Tenerife South routes Operation Kilo THIS weekend Tenerife Food Bank has organised Operation Kilo on Friday 19th and th Saturday 20 April in six Mercadona supermarkets on the island of Tenerife. Food Bank explained that the objective of the initiative is to address the needs of the most disadvantaged and socially excluded in society. As an example of this concern, Mercadona

and Bancoteide have signed an annual agreement by which the supermarket chain will donated 10 tons of food for this cause. In each designated Mercadona supermarket there will be a ‘ Food Bank Table ‘ where volunteers will be collecting the food you donate. Subsequently, the Food Bank will be responsible in Tenerife for distributing it among

organisations with which it collaborates. There are six centers participating in this joint operation, here in the south they include: Mercadona, Las Chafiras, San Miguel de Abona, and Mercadona, Gran Sur Shopping Centre (Fanabe) Adeje. The collection schedule will be the same for all stores, which coincides with the opening hours (09.15 to 21.15 hours).

NORWEGIAN Air Shuttle, a Norway-based low-cost air carrier, is launching 12 new routes this month, centred on UK’s Gatwick airport.

The new routes are in an attempt to take on existing low-cost operators with substantial UK operations such as Ryanair, easyJet and Thomson. Founded in 1993, Norwegian is now considered to be the second largest airline in Scandinavia. The Nordic carrier intends to take advantage of the British summer holiday trade by operating routes

to southern Europe and the Adriatic. Three of its aircraft will be permanently based at Gatwick with the intention of guaranteeing regular services with quick turnaround times. The destinations that the Norwegian Air Shuttle will serve from Gatwick include the three main Canary Islands, Tenerife (Tenerife South), Lanzarote and Gran Canaria; Mallorca in the Balearics; the Spanish Cities of Malaga, Alicante and Barcelona; Faro on Portugal’s Algarve; the cities of Dubrovnik and Split in Croatia; Italy’s capital, Rome; Nice on the French Riviera; and Tromso in Norway’s far north. Norwegian Air’s com-

mitment to Gatwick has grown steadily in recent years, from 198 flights in 2009 to 320 flights by this coming summer with the inclusion of the new routes. Norwegian’s CEO, Bjorn Kjos, was reported in the Daily Mail, saying, ‘We are very happy with the relationship we have had with Gatwick since we moved all our London routes to the airport. By establishing a base in London, Norwegian will be positioned to meet future competition on short-haul routes within Europe.’ Their website also boasts wi-fi available on some flights and low cost fares. Throwaway food for thought...

A bone-disease drug is taken off the market A DRUG used to treat the crippling bone degeneration disease osteoporosis has been withdrawn from the Spanish market.

Spanish health authorities fear that one of the ingredients may be associated with bonetumour formation. The Spanish Medication and Health Products Agency (AEMPS) says nasal sprays containing Calcitonin have been removed from

shelves, and information about similar drugs prescribed for injecting is being updated.. Clinical trials have revealed that there may be a link between Calcitonin and a higher risk of cancerous tumours. The AEMPS has ordered doctors to cease prescribing, and for pharmacies to stop dispensing any medication containing the ingredient for now. Anyone taking Calcitonin preparations as injections are advised to do using the minimum effective dose - and for very short periods only.

CANARIES TO FACE CALIMA THERE is enough food thrown away in Spanish households to fill the country’s food banks 80 times over.

And some 50% of all foodstuffs produced in the EU ends up being binned, whether or not it has gone off. These shocking statistics come from the Spanish Federation of Food Banks, which also reveals that altogether, eight million tonnes of food - nearly one tonne per two people - are thrown away in

Page 10

Spain every year. The Federation is calling for changes to reduce this devastating waste in a country where millions are unable to feed themselves or their families. That’s because of the horrendous job losses suffered in recent years, and they are forced to rely on hand-outs from the Red Cross, Cáritas, or soup kitchens. The Federation also says “use-by” and “sell-by” simply aren’t realistic, and that better explanations should be given, since many people throw food away fearing it has gone off.

In fact, it is usually perfectly safe to eat, with no reduction to the flavour or nutritional content. Use-by dates were recently removed from yoghurts on the basis that they did not expire, while pasta, rice and other foodstuffs never really go off, according to nutrition experts. The Federation says supermarkets should be encouraged to put aside a certain amount of their food every week - not just their surplus - to ensure food banks are full of healthy, nutritious produce.

Federation officials point out that food is not just about filling the stomach, but about intellectual development, physical health and strengthening defences against illness. But as most food in food banks is nonperishable, it means people who rely on these as the only way of surviving do not get any fruit, vegetables or other vitamin-rich produce. That means, tragically, that they are likely to suffer from ill-health, particularly in the long run.

AEMET, The Canary Islands’ Metrological Office has issued a warning that islanders will be subjected to a Calima this weekend.

A Calima is a mass of fine dust and sand, usually accompanied by scorching temperatures; on this occasion it will be carried on a strong easterly wind

from the Western Sahara. The whole of the Canaries will be affected, some islands worse than others as temperatures rise to 34 C, with Saturday being the worst day with the mercury rising to 37 C in Tenerife. Saturday sees a weather warning of an orange alert in place due to the heat. Air quality will also be poor due to the sand, however, conditions are set to improve on Monday.

The big freeze FAREWELL chills UK sales BARONESS

THATCHER

LAST month’s appalling weather in Britain led to 0.7% fall in overall retail sales.

It was the coldest March since 1962 and put shoppers off from hunting down spring ranges, resulting in sales being 0.5% lower on the year, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Despite the early Easter holiday, nonfood sales tumbled by 4%, a figure partly offset by the biggest rise since March 2009 in non-store retailing, which includes online shopping. Online sales accounted for 10.4% of all spending, compared with 8.8% a year earlier. That suggested that consumers preferred to stay indoors in the warm, and carried out essential food shopping only. But while the British Retail Consortium

Page 12

BRITAIN saluted a renowned but divisive Prime Minister as Margaret Thatcher was laid to rest on Wednesday.

found 3.7% annual growth in the value of retail sales, the ONS measured it at just 0.1%. And Debenhams blamed the January snow for a 5.4% dip in profits in its first half. Britain’s secondbiggest department store group forecast a better second half of the year after making a pretax profit of £120.3m in the 26 weeks to 2nd March. Chief executive Michael Sharp said: “We expect to make further progress in the second half, despite consumer

sentiment remaining weak, and challenging market conditions.” Many retailers have found trading tough as consumers, whose spending generates about two-thirds of gross domestic product (GDP), continue to face a squeeze on incomes, with record household energy prices and other higher costs. Last year’s soggy summer, followed by the bitterly-cold winter, also curtailed sales, though most economists are tipping the UK to avoid a triple-dip recession.

The former Tory leader, now a baroness, was given a ceremonial funeral at St Paul’s Cathedral, with a 2,300-plus congregation featuring political allies, past and present, and enemies, as well as some household celebrities. The biggest “celeb” of all was, of course, The Queen, whose presence effectively raised the occasion to a state event. She was joined by dignitaries from around the world, and all Lady Thatcher’s successors. It was the first time the monarch had attended the funeral service of a former prime minister since Sir Winston Churchill’s state ceremony in 1965. The UK’s first and only female prime minister was given full military honours, her coffin brought to St Paul’s on a gun carriage drawn, by six black horses. Security across the capital was tight, but there were far smaller crowds than expected. Despite talk of major protests and disruptions to the event, no arrests were made in London during the morning, although many onlookers were furious that taxpayers were paying most of the estimated £10m funeral bill. Inside the famous church, tributes were paid to the once- formidable, 87-year-old former premier. They were led by the former politician’s children, twins Mark and Carol, and her two grandchildren, Michael and Amanda. Sitting a few rows behind them, among current politicians, was Chancellor George Osborne, who had tears running down his face at one stage. Also in attendance were more than 30

members of the Iron Lady’s cabinets, including Lord Heseltine and Lord Howe, who played a key role in her downfall. Alongside them were dignitaries from around 170 countries, including two heads of state and 11 serving prime ministers. Curiously, no one came from the White House, although former US vice-president Dick Cheney and exsecretary of state Henry Kissinger attended in a private capacity. More than 50 guests were associated with the Falklands, especially Simon Weston, the conflict’s best-known veteran. Characters from the entertainment world included Sir Terry Wogan, Jeremy Clarkson, Katherine Jenkins, Joan Collins and Lord LloydWebber. The main service was conducted with more pomp and ceremony than any funeral seen in London since the death of the Queen Mother in 2002. Lady Thatcher had planned it to the last detail some years ago and, at her express wish, her granddaughter Amanda read the first lesson. David Cameron read from the Gospel while the Bishop of London gave an address which deliberately steered clear of mentioning her political legacy. He said: “The storm of conflicting opinions centres on the Mrs Thatcher, who became a symbolic figure - even an ‘ism’. “Today, the remains of the real Margaret Hilda Thatcher are here at her

funeral service. Lying here, she is one of us, subject to the common destiny of all human beings.” He continued: “Parliament held a frank debate last week - but here and today is neither the time nor the place.” Music by British composers was played at the beginning and end of the service, and the hymns reflected aspects of Lady Thatcher’s life. They included He Who Would Valiant Be, Love Divine All Loves Excelling to mark the influence of her Methodist upbringing, and I Vow To Thee My Country because of her love for the nation. At the end, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, gave the blessing before the coffin was removed by bearers from units linked to the Falklands War. The waiting crowd gave three cheers as it emerged, after which the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh joined Lady Thatcher’s family on the Cathedral steps. The ceremony followed a sombre procession through central London, which was on lockdown with 4,000 police officers on duty in case of any unrest. Many among those lining the streets appeared to be Thatcher supporters, although others booed or performed a silent protest as the coffin passed. The honours had started at dawn with the lowering of flags over government buildings all around the country, where they remained until dusk.

ing the script. Disney is injecting new life into the lucrative series after buying Lucasfilm last year for £2.7bn. Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, who starred in the original films, are set to reprise their iconic roles as Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Prince Leia. The actors, and creator George Lucas, have spoken cautiously about their involvement, although Disney has yet to give official confirmation. The spin-off films, lined up for 2016 and 2018, will feature some of the lesser characters or explore the back story of the major ones. Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote The Empire Strikes Back, is involved with the scripts.

Chinese tragedy A BRITISH toddler died on Monday evening when a folding screen fell on him in a restaurant in China,

The three-year-old boy, who has not been named, was hit on the head at the Kervan Turkish restaurant in Shanghai. He had been playing near a wooden screen used to separate diners and the restaurant

owner’s wife told the China Daily: “The boy tumbled down. “He tried to get up by pulling the screen, but it fell and hit him. It happened about four metres from us.” A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We can confirm the death of a British national on 15th April. “The British Consulate General is in contact with the family and providing consular assistance.”

Brit coach driver is dead and four are badly hurt A BRITISH coach driver died and at least four passengers were seriously injured following a crash in the French Alps on Tuesday.

No more Black magic from a wonder horse AUSTRALIAN super-horse Black Caviar is being retired after winning a record 25 consecutive races.

The legendary, sevenyear-old mare is widely regarded as the world’s best sprinter. She has thrilled all race-goers Down Under, and last year she even starred at Royal Ascot, winning the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. Now, though, her owners and trainer have decided her racing career should end, to the disappointment of Black Caviar’s worldwide admirers.

Trainer Peter Moody said on Wednesday: “I’ve had a long chat with the owners in the last couple of days and this afternoon, we decided 25 was a great number. “Collectively, we have decided the mare’s in great shape and that it is the right time to call it a day.” He added: “She brought interest to our sport that hasn’t been there for decades - Black Caviars don’t come along every day.” The horse, nicknamed the Wonder from Down Under, became a huge celebrity in her home

country, boasting her own range of merchandise, She even had a Facebook page and fan club. Whenever she raced, tickets sold out, while punters waved Black Caviar flags and dressed in her jockey’s colours of salmon with black spots. She won her final race in Sydney last weekend and will now begin a lucrative breeding career, with her foals potentially worth millions of pounds. Last week, her halfbrother sold at auction for £3.3m, which was a whopping £1.3m above estimates.

The mare will parade at Melbourne’s famous Caulfield racetrack tomorrow (Saturday) to bid farewell to the public. Trainer Moody said: “We thought long and hard about racing on for another season. We thought about Royal Ascot, we thought about Brisbane and we thought about Adelaide. But we believe she has done everything we’ve asked her to do. She couldn’t possibly have done any more.” Peter Werrett, Black Caviar’s main owner, said simply: “She’s told Peter, and Peter’s told us.”

It also left 24 other passengers needing hospital treatment after the coach, ferrying staff back to Britain following the end of the ski season, veered off the road near Alpe d’Huez and burst into flames. The remaining 22 passengers and second driver were unharmed, with many escaping the burning wreckage by jumping from windows. It was suggested by a local police spokesman that the vehicle may have had problems with its brakes. The UK travel organisation Abta said the Britons had been working for a Brighton-based ski company in that area and other resorts in the French Alps. The police spokesman added: “The driver seems

to have lost control on a steep bend in the road and his vehicle crashed into rocks. Some passengers escaped by jumping out the windows.” A Skibound spokesman said: ”Twenty-nine passengers were taken to hospitals in the area, four of whom are being treated for more serious injuries. “The other 22 passengers have escaped injury and are now with police and counsellors in a local hotel.” He added: “Our thoughts are with those who have been involved in the accident and their relatives. “The names of any injured parties will not be released until all next of kin have been notified.” .A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are aware of the tragic incident involving British nationals in the Isere region of southern France. “We are in touch with the local authorities and are providing consular assistance.” The route, which has formed part of the Tour de France cycle race in the past, is infamous for its treacherous hairpin bends.

Yellow peril won’t affect cars IT beggars belief! Council workers in Swindon have painted double yellow lines either side of an alleyway just 1.4m wide. It is hardly wide enough for two people to walk down side by side, never mind a car being parked there. The alley, near the town centre, was painted last week when other roads in the area were also having double yel-

Page 14

lows put down. Local resident Liz Adams said: “Only Swindon could do such things. I’m not sure how one is supposed to park along here in a car. It’s just wide enough for me to stand here. “I think it’s just really, really funny. It’s absurd. It’ll be a shame if the council rectify it, but I think they will now.” It seems that the workmen laying down

the lines were following their instructions to the letter and did not feel drivers would not try to park there. Local businessman Ray Mudhar told the Swindon Advertiser: “It’s one of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen. When me and my mate saw it, we just laughed our heads off. It’s a waste of time, waste of money and waste of material. “The only thing you

could get down there would be a bike - and noone is going to leave a bike parked up there.” A Swindon Borough Council spokesman said: “Local residents have asked us to deal with illegal parking in alleyways. “But it seems that our contractors forgot just how big cars actually are when they painted this one. We will be taking it up with them.”

Minimum wage increases are a boost for youngsters BRITISH workers will receive an increase in their wages from October following the minimum hourly rate being upped by the Government. The national minimum wage for adults will go up by 12p an hour, while youngsters aged 1820 will get a 5p rise to £5.03, and those aged 16-17 will pocket an extra 4p for an hourly rate of £3.72. Ministers rejected a recommendation from the Low Pay Commission that the rate for apprentices should be frozen, announcing a 3p increase for them to £2.68 an hour. Business Secretary Vince Cable said: “The independent Low Pay Commission plays a crucial role in advising the Government when set-

ting the national minimum wage every year. “It balances wages of low-paid workers against employment prospects if the rate was set too high. “We are accepting its recommendations for the adult and youth rate increases, which I am confident strikes this balance. “However, there is worrying evidence that a significant number of

employers are not paying apprentices the relevant minimum wage rate.” He added: “Apprenticeships are at the heart of our goal to support a stronger economy, and so it is important to continue to make them attractive to young people. “We are working on a series of tough new measures to ensure we tackle non-compli-

ance issues across the board.” Tim Thomas, of manufacturers’ organisation EEF, said it meant “a delicate balance between the need for an element of pay progression and the limitations employers face in accommodating pay rises”. He added: “The modest increase in the apprenticeship rate is unlikely to affect appren-

ticeship recruitment negatively. “Of much greater importance is the raising of apprenticeships standards, better information and advice to students, and ensuring that apprenticeships are truly employer-led and employer-driven.” Frances O’Grady, the TUC general secretary, said: “Boosting the incomes of the low paid goes straight into the

economy, and wage-led growth must be part of the recovery. “So we would have liked to have seen minimum wage rates go up further - even if the Government has rightly rejected calls for a freeze. “But we are pleased that ministers have increased the apprenticeship rate. This sends a positive signal about the importance of apprentices. “We will continue to press ministers for more action to ensure the minimum wage is properly enforced - particularly for apprentices where there is considerable evidence that many miss out.” “He added forcibly: “It is time to get tough with wage-cheat employers who break this law. We will continue to urge the many employers who can afford it to implement a full living wage for their staff.”

Backache? Here’s an injection of hope AN injection of bone marrow into the spine offers hope to millions left in daily agony through backache. And the breakthrough could also boost the economy by saving more than £12billion a year lost by workers taking days off sick. Four out of five people in Britain will suffer debilitating back pain at some point in heir lives, and an estimated three million every year consult their doctors. Possible treatments include painkillers, muscle relaxants, steroid injections, physiotherapy, surgery or simple bed rest. But most are designed to control symptoms only. Now, however, an experimental study has suggested that bonemarrow grafts into the spine could the answer. Dr Donald Meyer, of the Columbia Interventional Pain Centre in

Page 16

Missouri, said: “Our results are encouraging. “Currently, when conservative treatment fails, therapeutic options are limited for individuals with back pain through disc degeneration. “Many resort to disc surgery or spinal fusion - with mediocre results. Our goal is to help develop a safe, natural method to boost the body’s own capacity to heal disc pain.” Arthritis Research UK said the study looked promising. “Low back pain, associated with intervertebral disc degeneration, is a painful and debilitating disorder costing the UK economy over £12billion a year,” said a spokeswoman. “Although many types of surgery are available for selected patients, current treatments for lower back pain remain inadequate, with patients continuing to suf-

fer pain and immobilisation. “The study shows that this type of novel treatment, using bonemarrow grafts may be effective in certain patients.” The US researchers found that the type of bio-cellular grafts used increasingly by surgeons to repair damaged tissue may be useful for treating lower back pain. Some patients, though not all, reported complete relief, members at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Pain Medicine were told. The procedure involved injecting a concentrated form of bonemarrow liquid into lumbar discs. These are small cushions of tissue between the bones in the spine that work like shock absorbers. They are prone to wear and tear, and can slip out of place, pressing on nerves.

Huge scandal of the UK’s neglected kids Paper mill goes up in flames AROUND 100 firefighters were involved in a twoday blaze at a Birmingham paper mill this week. It started just after 10pm on Wednesday night at the Smurfit Kappa plant, which covers seven acres of bales in the Nechells area. More than 15 fire crews were involved, and some 10,000 tons of recycled cardboard bales were said to be affected. People living nearby, close to the M6 motorway, were urged to stay indoors, keeping windows and doors shut, although the material burning

is thought to be nontoxic. A spokesman for the West Midlands Fire Service tweeted: “Fire is contained to storage area, high winds are hampering fire fighting, however crews and other agencies are working extremely hard to bring blaze under control.” West Midlands Police said there had been no reported injuries. But they advised people to avoid the area if possible because the emergency services were at the scene continuously. A police helicopter checked overnight for signs of the fire spreading to other parts of the industrial estate in which the plant is sited.

ONE of the largest children’s charities in the UK has warned that more than 500,000 kids are being abused at home.

Yet their local authorities are unable to protect them, according to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC). The hidden extent of child abuse and neglect revealed in a new survey carried out by the NSPCC is “a national scandal”. Just one in nine abused youngsters is protected by the authorities, while the rest of them slip through the net. The charity agrees that protection services are improving, but it stresses that they will only ever reach a fraction of the abused children.

The scale of the problem is a major discovery in the UK’s first national childabuse tracker How Safe Are Our Children, launched by the charity. Lisa Harker, NSPCC head of strategy and one of the report’s authors, said: “As a nation, we spend more than £6 billion every year on services for children and families. “We need to know if our efforts to prevent abuse and protect children are working. “Child-protection ser-

vices are working in overdrive, and our report shows the UK is making progress in some areas. But the hidden extent of child abuse and neglect revealed in this report is a national scandal. “Since Baby Peter, social workers and other professionals are working harder and harder to reduce the harm caused by abuse and neglect. “They are taking more referrals, making more assessments, providing more services and putting more children

in care. “When we discover abuse, we must do everything we can to protect children from further harm and help them recover. “But it’s vital to prevent abuse from happening to so many children in the first place. “We need to shift policy across the UK towards early intervention - and set a new course that can stop cruelty blighting so many children’s lives.” The report reveals that for every child subject to a protection plan, or on child protection registers, another eight have suffered recent maltreatment. The NSPCC estimates that 520,000 children were maltreated by a parent or guardian in the UK in 2011, but only 58,000 became the subject of childprotection plans in that year.

Relief for tragic Linda Sue AN 11-year-old dog called Linda Sue had lived almost all her life alone, in an empty property with a garden near Santa Cruz.

Her only human contact was with a kind neighbour, who fed her daily for 10 years. But the poor dog had a mammary tumour, which had grown over the past year to enormous proportions until it hung like a rugby ball from her lower abdomen.

The Sano y Asalvo association were alerted, but had two problems: how to finance an urgent operation, and where to put her afterwards. As we had 1,104 euros in the pot from the sponsored half-marathon, we agreed to help with the former, while Alice and Mark, from Poochies Pet Hotel, offered a place to recuperate. With everything in place, Sano y Asalvo rescued her from the empty property and she was taken to Hospivet Sur in Las Chafiras.

Live Arico news

We all agreed that she was the saddest-looking dog we had ever seen - nobody’s dog for almost all her solitary life. Her initial blood tests, paid for by Sano y Asalvo, were actually not too bad, and heartworm negative, which was a huge bonus. However, subsequent X-rays revealed a deeper problem: secondary tumours in the lungs, and a worry that she would not survive the operation to

remove the mammary tumour. We arranged a second opinion, just to be 100% sure. All vets agreed that Linda Sue had only 3-6 months to live. Although the news was devastating, all of us felt that to improve the quality of her last months, the tumour should be removed. Had she died on the operating table then, nothing ventured, nothing gained, and at least something had been done for her.

So last week, the operation was carried out at Hospivet Sur, and the horrendous 850gm tumour was cut away. She came round and, since then, has continued to improve. Lylyam and Nazaret, from Sano y Asalvo, have fallen in love with her and are going to take her back to Santa Cruz to care for her, so Poochies Pet Hotel wasn’t needed in the end, although we are grateful for the offer. As you will see from the before and after photos, already she looks like a different

dog and the 214 euros we paid for her surgery was worth every cent, just to make her last few months as pleasant as can be. She deserves that after a lifetime of neglect. Some things are priceless, and we at Live Arico PAWS feel privileged to have been able to help. Sano y Asalvo are using a photo of the removed tumour as part of a campaign to highlight the importance of sterilisation as a means of reducing the risk of mammary tumours in female dogs.

Helping hand for Sebastian the lifeguard THE plight of the Arona lifeguards - in dispute with the local council for several months - has been in the public eye recently.

MORE than 200 dogs have been brought into the refuge by Protection Civil since 1st January, so it’s very important that we continually try to re home as many animals as possible. In the last week, we’ve been fortunate to rehome two gorgeous pets with English families in just one day. Our first happy dog is the newly-named Rico. His new owners, Trevor and Rosie Bull, joined us on our first Fun Dog Walk and fell in love with him . They visited the refuge and walked Rico a few times before finally taking him home last week. Trevor and Rose have already been in touch to say that he is really happy and settling into his new life. We look forward to

It was suggested to Steve Sands, of Live Arico PAWS, that maybe they could donate some dog food to the Lifeguards’ dog, Sebastian, and the LAP committee agreed. Steve made contact with Verónica Rodríguez Rodríguez,

the lifeguards’ spokesperson, who also owns Sebastian. Because of the lifeguards’ financial hardship, she had fallen behind with Sebastian’s annual injections. Live Arico PAWS made plans to get Veronica

and Sebastian to visit Dr Gilbert at the, Centro Veterinario, Suarez Cuchi, Las Americas, and paid for the required injections to get Sebastian up to date. So at least one lifeguard is flourishing again!

Everything’s Rosie for Rico seeing them again next Sunday (28th April) on our next walk. We are again meeting by the Hotel Conquistador in the car park by the seafront at 6pm. If you would like to join us and walk one of the many dogs at the refuge, please call Marion on 922 778 630 to reserve a dog, or you are welcome to bring your own pet. Our other lucky dog, a puppy, was adopted by Kerry Jane Derose, and we are sure they will be very happy together. It has been another busy week with Accion del Sol’s Educational Programme, and Marion, who runs the refuge, would like to say a special thank-you to the CEIP Parque del la Reina school. It donated a large amount of puppy food for the Guaza Mountain puppies and another large litter of 10 puppies, which were also brought

in last week. Marion has been working around the clock to ensure all the puppies are being catered for to the usual high standards at the refuge.

Call 922 778 630 for more information, or if you would like to help out at the refuge in any way. Towels and blankets are always needed for the dogs, so

if you have any to spare, they would be much appreciated by our inmates. The refuge is situated the Granadilla Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to the ecological park

ITER, by the windmills. It is open to the public Monday-Friday, from 3-6pm and, if you are interested in adopting a dog or maybe just taking a dog or two for a leisurely walk, then do drop in.

Fun Golfers’ Karol service is first class

ANOTHER good day was enjoyed at Los Palos on Sunday by the Charity Fun Golfers, with newcomer De Bel Karol taking the honours. He won the Gents’

Nearest the Pin and went on to secure the competition with partner Peter Cook. In second place came John McCabe and Tony Capaldi, with Sean Bi-

ble and Jim Wilson behind them. Sadly, yet again, the ladies failed to find the 8th green, while the booby prize was a shared item between Frank Moss, Dar-

ren Kemp, John Bentley and Jenny Messham. The next competition is on 12th May, and anyone wishing to play should contact Clive on 922 797 640.

JUDGES PUTTING ON A BRAVE FACE! By Maggie Lennard

WE hit the halfway point in the TLK 2013 heats at The Pub in Torviscas, which is a small (some would say ‘intimate’) venue, frequented mostly by residents.

An apparently oversubscribed contestant list was whittled down to 11 as we realised some participants had registered both at the venue and with Oasis Fm. Boss man Tony Burgess was fired up for the evening, and welcomed us all warmly. And, despite football’s Champions League quarter-finals being shown on the televisions, the real knockouts were to come on the stage. Our judges for the evening were hard to recognise, given that they were wearing X Factor judge masks. They turned out to

Page 20

be resident compère Jimmy the Fish (Gary Barlow), Pub regular David (Louis Walsh), musician and singer Ian Lennard (Tulisa - I KNOW!), and, of course, Jamie Drew (Simon Cowell). First up was Lisa, who opted for her favourite Madonna track Hanky Panky and provided a great opener for the night ahead. Rachael was cajoled into entering by her colleagues from Thomson Holidays, and made a superb job of Dizzee Rascal’s Holiday. The fast-paced rap proved no obstacle to her, and how she completed it without collapsing was beyond me. Thomson Holiday Adviser Terry went on third. I had a sneaking suspicion he would be a force to be reckoned with, as he had been very particular about the version and the key of the song he chose: the Tom Jones’ standard I (who have nothing).

Tenerife Loves Karaoke

I was not wrong because Terry performed a powerhouse version of the 1970 hit. Staff member Kim was to follow Terry (birthday girl, and other barmaid Charlene declined to compete, possibly because of a constant supply of knockbacks being sent her way!). Kim chose Alanis Morissette’s Ironic and delivered a solid performance of a demanding song. Laura was next to go, and when given the microphone to introduce herself, opted to announce that she has entered every heat so far this year;. That was no mean feat, particularly as she had been poorly the previous week. Laura stuck with familiarity, delivering Daniel Merriweather’s Red as consistently as ever. Iraq-born Shané was next to go, and she impressed greatly with Amy Winehouse’s

version of Valerie. It was an accurate copy of the original, and stood her in good stead for a place in the sing-off. Francesca performed in seventh spot, and chose a difficult song in Aretha Franklin’s Respect. It was well received, but maybe a lower key would have stopped the transition from falsetto to head voice occurring more frequently than the song requires. I was pre-warned about our eighth entry. James had entered TLK before, and made the sing-off at the Harbour Club in a previous edition of the competition. I was not, however, prepared for an outstanding rendition of Star Trekkin’ which was a novelty No1 for The Firm in 1987. It was a combination of brilliance and utter madness! First-time entrant Kate followed James, and opted for a Taylor Swift song (surprisingly the first time we have heard a Swift composition this year). Love Story was performed well, and with emotion, despite Kate’s obvious nerves. Our penultimate contestant was Kath, who chose the epic My Heart Will Go On by

Céline Dion. Although touted by some of her friends as a joke entry, Kath gave her all, right to the last “Ooo-oooooo-oo-o”. Bringing the qualifying round to a close was Zoe, who sang KT Tunstall’s Black Horse and the Cherry Tree, which we had also heard at the Premier Bar the week before. It is a song that definitely grabs attention, and was executed very well. A quick “Happy Birthday” to Charlene later (and another knockback, unless I am mistaken), and we had our final three; Terry, James and Shané. Each one chose a sing-off song, and the audience drew lots to ascertain the order they would perform in. James went first and chose the Kings of Leon’s Sex on Fire. It was far removed from his qualifying song, but he proved he wasn’t a one-trick pony. Shané went second, and chose Adele’s Someone Like You, which didn’t come as a huge surprise. Her voice is well-suited to this kind of song and vocal range, and it was fabulous, to say the least. That left just Terry to go, and he (after much deliberation) chose to sing Blue and Stevie Wonder’s remake

of Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours). It was simply sublime. No further comment needed. That was that; the results soon followed. James was in third, Shané second, and Terry became just the second male finalist this year. Heat six winner Terry Saunders is, as already mentioned, a Thomson holiday adviser. So if you’re reading this while staying at La Siesta or the Conquistador, do take the time to congratulate him, and don’t forget to tick the “excellent” box on your questionnaire! Our next heat is on Saturday, 27th April at Clouseau’s, in Palm Mar, so if performing on a “school night” has stopped you entering, you now have no excuse! After that, we’re at the following venues: 2nd May: Kandi Lounge, Puerto Colon 9th May: Terrace Bar, Amarilla Golf 16th May: Dreamers Bar, los Cristianos 23rd May: Leonardo’s, Playa de las Americas You can enter any of these heats by registering at the venue, by calling 902 232 102 in office hours, by email to info@oasisfm.com (no later than 4pm on the day of the heat), or by private message at the TLK Facebook page.

John and Grace Middleton struggle to cope when baby Mary falls dangerously ill with scarlet fever. In a desperate attempt to save her, John steals some animal medicine from the Big House estate farm - but at what cost? A surprising relationship unfolds between Agnes and Bairstow. He and Edmund Allingham plot to use this for their own ends. It’s an important date for the village; today is the Rondo, an annual wheelbarrow race, run around the perimeter of the cricket pitch. Many of the village’s men are away fighting so this year, for the first time in history, the race will be run by the local boys. Bert decides that winning this race is a matter of life or death; if he wins, his soldier brother Joe will be kept safe. Unbeknownst to the village, the date of the Rondo coincides with the first day of the Battle of the Somme. There’s a rumour that a big offensive is about to be launched in France and that the local Pals’ battalion is to take part. Bert has received a field service postcard from Joe, with a coded sign that means Joe will be ‘going over the top’...

Sunday 21st April, BBC1 Jonathan Edwards presents live coverage of the 33rd annual London Marathon as world-class runners and 36,000 fundraisers compete in one of the world’s most famous races. The elite men’s race has attracted all three marathon medallists from last summer’s Olympics and six of the 10 fastest runners of all time. In addition, Britain’s double Olympic champion Mo Farah will get his first taste of an elite marathon when he runs the first half of the course as a fact-finding mission ahead of his full marathon debut next year. Farah will be up against the likes of marathon world record holder Patrick Makau, Olympic champion Stephen Kiprotich, world champion and Olympic silver medallist Abel Kirui, and reigning London champion Wilson Kipsang. In the women’s race, Ethiopia’s Tiki Gelana defends the title she won last year but faces tough opposition from the likes of Kenyan world champion Edna Kiplagat and compatriot Priscah Jeptoo, who won silver at the London Olympics. Great Britain’s four-time London 2012 Paralympic gold medallist David Weir and compatriot Shelly Woods will defend their wheelchair titles. The day for the majority of runners though will be about setting personal bests or simply completing the 26.2 mile course. We will hear from some of those who are running for the many charities who benefit from one of the great events in the British sporting calendar. Colin Jackson, Denise Lewis, Phil Jones, Sonali Shah and Katherine Merry will be reporting from across the course, with race commentary by Steve Cram, Brendan Foster, Paul Dickenson, six-time London Marathon wheelchair race winner Baroness Tanni Grey Thompson and marathon world record holder Paula Radcliffe.

The Ice Cream Girls ITV1, 21.00

In 1995 Serena Gorringe and Poppy Carlisle were accused of killing teacher Marcus Halnsley. Today Serena is forced to confront the memories she has long since buried, as Poppy is released from a seventeen-year prison sentence for the crime she still insists she didn’t commit. Poppy Carlisle and Serena Gorringe were briefly friends in the summer of 1995. But one night that summer, a horrific tragedy would strike and change their lives forever. Today Serena returns to her hometown for the first time in seventeen years, stirring up memories of the secret she has concealed from her husband and daughter. Serena is haunted by the memory of a teenage love-affair with her teacher, Mr. Halnsley – an affair that ended with his brutal murder. Poppy returns to the same hometown after seventeen years in prison. Poppy was found guilty of murder - a crime she still insists she did not commit. And now she’s out, she knows the only way to get her life back is to find Serena and force her to admit the truth about what happened that night. International best selling novel The Ice Cream Girls has been adapted for ITV by Left Bank Pictures. The story follows two vulnerable teenage girls who, in the summer of 1995, are accused of murdering their schoolteacher. For seventeen years, the two girls go their separate ways, Poppy having been charged with the murder. Now in 2013, they are forced to confront each other and their dark, shared history. While the drama plays out in the present, the events of that fateful summer unfold in flashback sequences. Had it not been for Serena’s teacher, Marcus (Martin Compston), these two girls from very different backgrounds might never have met. As a lawyer’s daughter, Serena appears to be from the right side of the tracks; pretty and popular with a bright future. Poppy, on the other hand, has never had the opportunities Serena takes for granted and struggles through life with a stepfather who doesn’t want her around. Fast-forward to modern day. Happily married mother Serena is now back in the same seaside town for the first time as she cares for her dying mother Rachel (Donna Kroll). Poppy is living in quite different circumstances. Having served seventeen years for a crime she still insists she didn’t commit, she has only one thing on her mind… the truth. And if she didn’t kill Marcus, then who did?

Together with director Wael Dabbous, Hartley highlights the inspiring work of the Restart Centre in Gilgil, which is providing a safe shelter for children at risk. The Restart Centre is run on a shoestring budget raised from private donations. Conditions are basic, but crucially, it represents safety for the 70 children who live there. Many of them ended up living rough as result of the bloody chaos that engulfed Kenya following disputed elections five years ago.

Paul Hollywood shows breads you can make from start to finish in under an hour. No kneading, no proving - just mix, shape and bake. He shows how these simple breads can be at the heart of every meal. His classic wholemeal soda bread topped with a cheesy Irish rarebit is the perfect snack at any time of day and his dark and dense, full flavoured stout bread with smoked salmon pate is as impressive as it is quick. Paul shows how easy it is to enjoy the magic of homemade crumpets bubbling on the griddle and how a simple scone recipe can transform a humble stew into hearty, fragrant beef cobbler that will have your hungry hoards beating a path to the table.

The Karate Kid Channel 4, 19:30

Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith star in this family martial arts adventure, a remake of the 1984 hit starring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita. The film is produced by the young co lead's parents, with the action moving from America to China, and the karate consequently replaced by kung fu. After the death of his father, Dre Parker's mother Sherry takes up a job offer in Beijing, where the 11-year-old is enrolled in a local school. Sadly, it's not long before the lad falls foul of the inevitable bullies. But he's saved from a beating by the kindly caretaker Mr Han, who uses his considerable prowess to turn Dre's attackers' moves against them, to humiliating effect. Following this incident, the quiet martial arts master reluctantly agrees to teach the American child how to look after himself, starting a journey that is set to culminate in Dre's participation in a major kung fu tournament - and his chance to turn the tables on his former assai ants.

Victoria had no problem producing children, but rearing them proved more problematical. She and Bertie - the future Edward VII - whom she thought to be psychologically incapable of the job of king, shared a fractious bond, and the emotional strains the family faced trying to reconcile the competing demands of public duty and a private life also took a toll. The Wright Way is a new BBC One sitcom from one of Britain’s most renowned comedy writers, Ben Elton (Blackadder, The Young Ones). The show stars David Haig as exasperated everyman, Gerald Wright. Gerald runs the Baselricky Council Health & Safety Department with a team of misfits who, despite their best efforts, seem to cause as much chaos as humanly possible in their mission to make Britain safer. In episode one, Gerald’s day gets off to a bad start. Living with his daughter, Susan, and her new partner, Victoria, is taking its toll on Gerald. Victoria turns out to be a bathroom hogger and Gerald is therefore forced to make use of the facilities at work, which have the push-button taps that he hates. During a staff meeting that identifies a rogue speed bump on the streets of Baselricky, Gerald’s colleague, Malika, announces her upcoming birthday by inviting gifts from the team with hints as subtle as a sledgehammer. Back home, Susan tries to encourage her dad to move on by getting back on the dating scene, while Victoria works on some new material to forge ahead with her DJ career. Encouraged by Susan, Gerald goes about getting Malika a birthday present, but an unfortunate mix up results in his intended romantic gesture landing him in very hot water. Gerald is played by David Haig, Susan by Joanne Matthews, Victoria by Beattie Edmondson and Malika by Mina Anwar

The Bikers take a culinary journey through time as they celebrate the history of British food. This time they focus on British sheep, which have provided us with milk, meat and wool for thousands of years. In the Best of British kitchen they rustle up a classic hogget and barley stew and tender lamb chops with kidneys, they help cook and eat a mouth-watering dish brought from North Africa, mechoui lamb, and reveal the history of the hardy seaweed-eating sheep found on the island of North Ronaldsay.

The Great British Sewing Bee BBC2, 20:00

Claudia Winkleman hosts a series in which some of the country's best home sewers are tested on their sewing and dressmaking skills in order to be crowned best amateur sewer by judges May Martin of the Women's Institute and Savile Row's Patrick Grant. In the final programme, the three contenders follow a complicated pattern for a man's shirt. The judges look for perfect top stitching with no pleats or puckers and one of the contestants is driven to tears. In the second challenge, they show off their stitching skills by decorating an evening bag, and the final task sees them create a made-to-measure evening dress in a luxury fabric for their new models.

The series continues with a powerful cautionary episode about events that shock people into reflecting on the way they live their lives. Thirty-nine-yearold Neil was driving a friend's sports car when he was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle. After remaining trapped in the wreckage for over an hour, he's flown by HEMS, the helicopter emergency medics, to King's A&E. The main concern is potential paralysis from injury to his neck and back. Meanwhile in Minors, two patients have come in as the result of daredevil antics. Thomassine, who's 21, is a fledgling skateboarder who was encouraged by her best friend Andre to do a risky stunt in the park after dark and she's badly hurt her ankle. Another patient, 34-year-old Matias, tried to get onto a train after the doors had closed. With his hands trapped, he was dragged along the platform until he managed to pull himself free.

Just be positive, even if it is a fib By Sue McDonald JUST for once, wouldn’t it be lovely to hear from someone in authority that things actually aren’t that bad, that everything is improving, and it will all be OK in the end.

And that, surely, would lead to more people spending their money and being more positive – and then it will, in fact, get better. So just for once, fib to us! From a business point of view, we have definitely seen an upturn in business over the last couple of months, and have several buyers just waiting to complete their property purchases before place their orders for furniture. There are also fewer “for sale” signs on view, which presumably means that a lot of property is moving,

even if it is at a much lower price. I’m not for a minute suggesting that things are getting back to what was “normal” a few years ago, and they probably never will. But if people are buying, that has to be a positive thing for the whole Island. That means that estate agents, banks, notaries, furniture shops (preferably mine!), kitchen-fitters, builders, etc, are all earning. And that they, in turn, are probably likely to spend money in shops, restaurants and bars. So the knock-on effect is good for all of us. At the moment, it is very much a buyers’ market, so if you have money, you can pick up property at a very reasonable price. Having said that, it is clear that buyers don’t have an unlimited budget nowadays, and most of our current work is dealing with upgrading pre-owned properties. A typical example is to buy new mattresses, perhaps new curtains and bedspreads, and some more modern pictures.

Sometimes a new sofa bed is needed, and on other occasions we can reupholster the existing one to bring it up to date. Generally speaking, for under 2,000 euros, we can do a revamp and make a property look much cleaner and more modern. It’s amazing what modern pictures and cushions can achieve, and often, if the budget can’t be stretched, throws can cover a multitude of sins! Equally, we can work a budget in stages, so that if the property is rented out, the income can pay for the revamp as and when. We can measure for new curtains, for example, have them made up and then install them once the funds are available. Like I said in one of my previous articles, you can work with what you’ve already got! So let’s all be positive. After all, we all live (full or part-time) on this lovely Island, and the weather has been amazing for months (although I hear a calima is on the way) …

Hard-pressed home-owners are target for quick-sale firms

FEARS that homeowners desperate for cash are being duped into selling houses cheaply and quickly - are being investigated by the Office of Fair Trading.

The OFT, which believes companies are trading on their cash plight by offering “quick house sales”, have already contacted 50 unidentified firms for details on their business models. And the watchdog is urging consumers to contact the OFT with information on their experiences. More than 157,900 UK households had fallen behind on their mortgage payments at the end of 2012. Firms in the housing sector offer to buy a property themselves,

Page 38

or find someone else to snap it up, often for less than the full market value. The OFT said that these type of companies may offer a “valuable service” for people who need fast access to cash. But it is concerned that stressed and vulnerable home owners, looking for a way out of financial difficulties, could be misled into selling for much less than their home is worth. There have also been suggestions that some customers have been told at the final stage of the “quick sale” process that the price they were getting had been considerably reduced. Other practices the watchdog is looking for include firms hiding their fees behind initial valuations which appear to offer a good price, and severe penalties

for breach of contract. The number of these quick sale operators has grown as the tough economic climate continues. The OFT will publish its findings on the “quick house sale” sector in July. The new regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority, welcomed the investigation and said it would work with the OFT to tackle any concerns. Peter Bolton King, global residential director of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, said that people considering a selling their homes quickly should take a step back and consider other options. He said they should get an estimate of what their property could sell for on the open market, even priced for a quick sale. Mr Bolton King added: “Naturally, people feel under financial pressure. They think, ‘I can sort out my problems in one fell swoop’. “But you should take a breath, take a step back and make sure you totally understand what it will mean.”

By David Hudgell FORGET how many kinds of sweet flowers grow in an English country garden - according to a new study, the value of property grows as well. To celebrate Homebase’s show-garden at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Homebase has revealed the true value of UK gardens with the nation claiming to invest £20billion in their backyards this year alone. According to the survey carried out by Homebase, the average garden has had £1,790 worth of investment that’s £80billion worth of petunias, ponds and parasols sitting on porches up and down the country. The need for investment is clear with two fifths of Britons refusing to choose or consider a home unless it has a sufficient garden. In fact, about 14% homeowners claim their garden has added more value to their

Garden

Money grows on trees, flowers and plants

home than they had ever invested. With so much value outdoors, it’s no wonder that Britons are concerned about the value of the garden’s contents. Loss of a lawnmower is the nation’s biggest garden concern (30%). One in 10 also fret about theft or damage of plants many even fear sheds (19%) or barbecues (15%) being stolen or damaged. For homeowners using flower power to sell their house, one kind really rose to the occasion: the quintessentially British rose bush was regarded the most attractive. However, it was humble grass that provided the biggest draw for UK househunters, outstripping all other plants, trees and flowers as the item that people look for in the gardens of prospective homes. Adam Frost, designer of the Homebase showgarden at Chelsea Flower Show, said: “The point of Chelsea Flower Show is to inspire people and to get us to engage with our gardens, in the same way that London Fashion Week influences high street fashion trends. “You don’t have to be in your 60s and a brilliant gardener to create something with real curb appeal. First time buyers just need to take the principles they apply to doing up the bathroom or

kitchen and use them to play and experiment with their garden to create a family space that acts as a corridor to nature.” Damian Gray, spokesperson for estate agents Knight Frank said: “Village-style houses have always been popular; however, the pretty house with a decent south facing garden is always in great demand. With countless property and gardening programmes on television instructing homeowners how to make the most of their garden, we are seeing a real interest in creating a garden that complements a house. Whether it’s a cottage or a country house, what’s the garden like? is a question high on the list from buyers.” Perhaps most surprising are Britons’ motivations for wanting a garden: one in 12 uses it to camp in, 15% use it for exercise and almost half sit and watch the birds and animals from the comfort of a garden chair. From bird-watching to the birds and bees, 10% use their garden for romantic moments and one in 20 has even

claimed to make love in the backyard! However, despite Britain’s unruly weather, the most popular garden pastime is sunbathing with 51% doing so. Frost added: “Every UK garden is different just like every UK home and its owners. However, with people staying in and entertaining at home more the garden offers a great opportunity to create an additional outdoor room that, with a bit of planning, can be used whatever the weather.” Matthew Compton, Head of Trading for Garden and Seasonal, Homebase, added: “It’s set to be an exciting year for budding and avid gardeners alike. With this year marking the centenary of the Chelsea Flower Show, we are sure this prestigious event will deliver ideas and inspiration in spades. “We hope that The Homebase Garden ‘Sowing the seeds of Change’ will provide just that but also show how simple touches can be easily implemented and add so much value to the garden - and the home.”

HOW TO INCREASE THE APPEAL AND VALUE OF YOUR GARDEN Making the garden an extension of your home is easier with a range of comfortable outdoor furniture. Adding in beanbags can bring colour and are an affordable way to bring a new look. Make the summer evenings last even longer with the use of outdoor lighting. Hanging lanterns are also great for adding a little romantic touch to your surroundings. Get real kerb appeal with a hanging basket. They are quick and cost effective way to brighten up an outdoor space. Utilise your space with interspersing vegetables with plants. You don’t need to have a dedicated patch to grow your own. Some like rhubarb can work in border areas, or patios and walls can have pots and planters. Use garden ornaments to create the perfect finishing touch, some quirky or interesting ones can create an interesting focal point with unusual pots for your plants.

Dos and don’ts!

By Carl from Robot

IF there’s anything you should and shouldn’t be doing with your hair, my list of dos and don’ts should keep you on the right track. I give out information about hair all day - often when I‘m not in the salon - because you can never know enough about your hair. There are always new tips to try, so here goes: DO treat your hair as you would your best friend, with respect.

Page 40

And always make sure it gets the best possible treatment, like using the best shampoos and conditioners you can affordDON’T cheat on your products by using any old stuff on your hair. Remember, you get back what you put in. DO, after washing your hair, gently squeeze it with a towel to remove excess moisture. DON’T rub and tear at the hair as this will lead to breakage and split ends. DO detangle the hair with a wide tooth comb and/or your fingers because this will leave the hair smoother and cause less damage.

DON’T rip your hair by combing through with a fine comb or plastic brush. This WILL cause more damage than applying a colour! DO allow your hair to dry naturally, or with a hairdryer, BEFORE you start to style your hair because it doesn’t take shape around a brush until 90% dry. DON’T over-use heated appliances. I’ve seen more damage with these than any colouring method. DO keep up to your colour regularly as there’s nothing worse than roots showing. DON’T overlap your colours! This is fatal for hair, especially here in Tenerife. DO, especially at this time of year, apply a hair masque once a week if your hair is longer, or has colour. Try to leave it in for as long a period as possible. DON’T skimp on this hair-saving treatment. If you’re taking things out of your hair, you need to put something back. And finally, DO listen to the advice of your stylist during your salon visit. Take note of what he or she recommends, and the advice being given. DON’T walk away from the salon thinking that we have done our bit. That’s it! Now it’s YOUR turn to carry on the care at home. Otherwise, we are wasting our time - and you’re wasting your money!

Additional exercise is just as helpful as a good massage A SOOTHING massage is the best way to ease those post-workout aches and pains. or so it’s said.

Now, though, new research suggests that doing a bit more exercise can be just as effective. “It’s a common belief that massage is better, but it isn’t,” insisted Lars Andersen, lead author of the new study, published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. “In fact, massage and exercise have the same benefits.” Earlier research has shown that massage can offer some relief from workout soreness. To understand how well light exercise compares, Professor Andersen, from the National Research Centre

for the Working Environment in Copenhagen, asked 20 women to do a shoulder exercise while hooked up to a resistance machine. The women shrugged their shoulders while the machine applied resistance, which engaged the trapezius muscle between the neck and shoulders. Two days later, the women returned to the lab with aching trapezius muscles. On average, they rated their aches five on a 10-point scale, which was up from 0.8 before they had done the shoulder workout. The women then received a 10-minute massage on one shoulder and did a 10-minute “recovery” exercise on the other shoulder. Some women received the massage first, while others performed the exercise first. The recovery exercise involved shoulder

shrugs like the initial exercise; but this time the women gripped an elastic tube, held down by their foot to provide resistance. Professor Andersen found that, compared with a shoulder that wasn’t getting any attention, both massage and exercise each helped diminish muscle soreness. The effect peaked 10 minutes after each treatment, with women reporting a pain reduction of 0.8 points after the warm-up exercise and 0.7 points after the massage. “It’s a moderate change,” Professor Andersen told Reuters, adding that athletes would notice a difference in having their soreness reduced by this amount. “By reducing soreness, athletes could be able to perform better, but we didn’t measure this,” he said. “If you are sore, your movements are very stiff, and it’s difficult to perform.” It’s not clear how massage or exercise helps relieve soreness, but it is thought that both help to clear out metabolic by-products, such as lactic acid, associated with tissue damage and exercise. Professor Andersen recommends that people try light exercise to ease their pain, but I’m sure us girls would much rather lie back and enjoy a good massage!

Be true to beetroot… and lower that blood pressure Barts and The London Medical School, said: “We were surprised by how little nitrate was needed to see such a large effect. “Our hope is that increasing one’s intake of vegetables with a high, dietary, nitrate content, such as green, leafy vegetables or beetroot, might be a lifestyle approach that one could easily employ to improve cardiovascular health.” Beetroot juice is found in most health food shops and usually costs around £2 a bottle. Around 16million people in Britain have high blood pressure, including one-third who don’t even know they have it, and it is a major

By Val Sainsbury DRINKING beetroot juice every day could help to lower blood pressure - because of its naturally-high levels of nitrate. New research suggests that an 8oz dose - about one cupful - may help high blood-pressure victims to cut their readings by around 7%. High concentrations of nitrate are also found in celery, cabbage and other leafy-green vegetables such as spinach and some lettuce. Eating high-nitrate foods triggers a series of chemical reactions in the blood, which can increase oxygen in areas of the body specifically lacking supply. The beetroot juice used in the study contained about 0.2g

of dietary nitrate levels found in a large bowl of lettuce, or two beetroots.

Amrita Ahluwalia, lead author of the study and a professor of vascular pharmacology at The

They drank 250ml of beetroot juice, or water containing a low amount of nitrate, and had their blood pressure monitored for 24 hours, says a report in the American Heart Association journal Hypertension. Compared with those drinking water, people having beetroot juice cut their systolic pressure by about 10 mm Hg. The effect was most pronounced three to six hours after drinking the juice, yet still present even 24 hours later. Previous research has shown that beetroot increases stamina, and can boost blood supply to vital areas of the brain.

Smaller waist equals good-health kidneys EXCESS weight around the tummy has been linked to an increased risk of kidney disease.

It was already known that being “appleshaped”, as opposed to “pear-shaped”, added to the risk of developing cardiovascular problems. And new research, in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, found signs of kidney problems in otherwise healthy apple-shaped people. Experts in Britain

risk factor for heart disease, strokes and kidney failure. Changes in lifestyle, such as cutting down salt and alcohol and taking more exercise, may control blood pressure, and there are a number of drug treatments available. A high blood-pressure reading is one that exceeds 140/90 mm Hg. The first figure, the systolic pressure, corresponds to the “surge” that occurs with each heart beat. The latest study recruited eight women and seven men with systolic pressure between 140 and 159 mm Hg who were not taking blood-pressure drugs.

agree, warning that people need to take more care of their kidney health. The research, by a team at Holland’s University Medical Centre in Groningen, looked at more than 300 people with either a healthy bodyweight, or who were overweight. They found that having a higher waist-tohip ratio - seen in those who were more appleshaped - was associated with lower kidney function, reduced kidney blood flow and higher blood pressure in the kidneys. Surprisingly, this was

also the case in those who were otherwise healthy. Arjan Kwakernaak, who led the study, said: “We found that appleshaped persons - even if totally healthy and with a normal blood pressure - have an elevated blood pressure in their kidneys. When they are also overweight or obese, this is even worse.” The findings suggest that these individuals may benefit from treatments that reduce kidney blood pressure, such as cutting salt levels and targeted drug treatments. A Kidney Research UK spokesman said: “We understand already that central -“apple” - obesity is associated with higher cardiovascular risk than peripheral - “pear” - obesity. And this demonstrates that the same is true for kidney disease.” He added: “This is further evidence that there is a link between obesity and the growing problem of kidney disease. “It means that more needs to be done to make people aware of the importance of protecting kidney function.”

Meson Era Las Mozas LAST Sunday I was privileged to be invited to the MESON ERA LAS MOZAS restaurant in Valle San Lorenzo to sample their typical Canarian cuisine.

It’s a little (well large actually) oasis tucked away in a tiny side street of Valle San Lorenzo.

Las Mozas has been there for 13 years so no doubt if you’ve lived here for a while you would’ve paid it a visit at least once, if not you don’t realise what you’re missing! We chose to sit outside in the covered courtyard area (where you can smoke) complete with real hanging plants and a whole host of long trestle like tables, ideal for large groups; there is also a cosy restaurant

where you can sit inside. With a bottle of Dorada and glass of Canarian white wine in hand we perused the multilingual menu, which is definitely a meat lover’s delight. I would say if you’re vegetarian it’s not the place for you. Hot bread, mojos both green and spicy red were brought to the table. To begin we shared a delicious and very reasonably priced dish

of garlic prawns, which were fresh and just delectable. Las Mozas is famous for its ribs but I thought I would break with tradition so for the main event I chose beef steak; two large pieces of thin steak graced my plate. So big infact there was no where to put the salad; or the melt in your mouth Canarian Potatoes. The meat was succulent and tasty, so you can see why people return time after time. My dining companion chose T-bone steak which was bigger than the plate itself, into which he made good progress but the sheer size defeated him. All in all we had a great evening, it’s spotlessly clean, you get attentive, good service and the main reason you go there is for the food, which was spot on.

To reserve a table telephone 922 765 597, the restaurant is open for lunch straight through to the evening for dinner. Closed on

Mondays. There is ample free car parking. More information is available from www. eralasmozas.com or find them on Facebook.

Flybe sees their ticket sales surge

British Airways signs Justin Rose BRITISH Airways has signed an exclusive threeyear partnership with, golfer Justin Rose, to become his Official Global Airline Partner. Justin will support the airline’s global marketing activity, including personal appearances, media and PR, internal engagements and supporting Flying Start – the airline’s charity partnership with Comic Relief. Justin’s Tour apparel will now feature the British Airways logo on his shirt collar, which started in the recent US Masters, where Rose finished down the leader board with winnings of 56,000 dollars (36,518.72 sterling) Justin said; “I’m delighted to be working with British Airways. Golf takes me all over the world, and as an athlete it’s really important to arrive feeling refreshed and ready to compete. The premium service provided by British Airways and its oneworld partners will be a great support with the busy season ahead and I’m proud to be an ambassador for my favourite airline. Abigail Comber, British Airways head

Page 44

of marketing, said: “We have a long standing history in supporting British sporting talent and I’m pleased that we are able to continue this through our partnership with Justin. We look forward to working with him.” Justin flew onto the golfing scene as a 17-year-old amateur during the 1998 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, and has since gone on to win four times on the PGA Tour including the 2012 WGC – Cadillac Championship, defeating reigning Masters Champion, Bubba Watson by a stroke. Justin also has five career titles on The European Tour, where he was leading money winner in 2007. Last year, Justin stood out in The Ryder Cup, where he teamed up with close friend Ian Poulter to win two foursomes matches and came from behind to beat Phil Mickelson in the singles, sinking long birdie putts on the final two holes to secure Europe’s fifth straight point on Sunday. Having competed in 34 career majors, Rose has posted top-five finishes in each of the four major championships at least once in his career. FLYBE, one of Europe’s largest regional airline’s has received an overwhelming amount of public support for its latest campaign to highlight the unfairness of Air Passenger Duty.

The airline received a surge in ticket sales on the back of its pledge to give passengers an equivalent ‘tax rebate’ across 116 routes effective for travel

between 27th October 2013 and 25th October 2014. It also received over 2,000 customer signatures in just three days for its petition to the Chancellor of the Exchequer calling upon him to introduce a fair deal for UK domestic aviation. In addition, Flybe saw a spike in social media engagement during this time, as customer messages poured in backing the campaign to raise public awareness of the punitive Air Passenger Duty departure tax. Key

media also supported the cause, with leading travel writer and journalist Simon Calder commenting how ‘Flybe is one of the biggest victims of Air Passenger Duty’. Niall Duffy, Head of PR and Public Affairs Flybe UK comments: “Once again we want to thank our customers for their support in helping us highlight the unfairness of Air Passenger Duty, both on behalf of our customers and the aviation industry as a whole. “This campaign was

slightly different, as it was not just simply us advertising our flights, but an attempt to once again raise the issue of the Air Passenger Duty and in particular the ‘double hit that Uk domestic passengers suffer. The economic development of any region is dependent upon the access and communications into and out of that region. As Europe’s largest airline, Flybe vows to continue to put pressure on the Government until it re-considers this punitive and unfair tax”

Queen Beatrice is a great draw as culture museum is reopened A MAMMOTH crowd of at least 10,000 gathered in Amsterdam to see Holland’s Queen Beatrix open the newlyrestored Rijksmuseum following a 10-year, £320m renovation. The colourful spectacle, which featured brass bands and a daytime fireworks display, gave people a rare chance to see their 74-year-old monarch before her forthcoming abdication. It was one of her fi-

nal official public appearances, and she was warmly applauded as she turned a golden key to open the renovated national museum of art and culture. It houses the largest collection of treasures from the Netherlands’ naval and cultural history. More than 75,000 tickets have reportedly, already been sold for the renowned attraction, which houses Rembrandt’s The Night Watch and other Dutch

masterpieces. The famous Rembrandt work, showing Amsterdam’s Civic Guard setting off on a march, is the only painting in the collection to have been returned to its original place. The huge painting is approached along a Gallery of Honour, featuring works such as Johannes Vermeer’s Woman Reading a Letter, and The Merry Drinker by Frans Hals. Many of the prize piec-

es in the collection of 8,000 works have been redisplayed in a broader context, with related paintings, furniture, silver and ceramics arranged in close proximity to each other as part of the museum’s new layout. The renovation, by Spanish architectural firm Cruz y Ortiz, sought to bring light into the courtyards at the centre of the 1885 brick structure, which resembles a fairytale castle.

By Jav FORD are determined to make their most of their revolutionary, fuel-conscious EcoBoost range of engines. That is why they will be using a new fourcylinder 1.5-litre petrol version in their new, updated Mondeo. The model will be previewed at China’s Shanghai Motor Show, the biennial auto affair alternating with the Beijing Show, which starts tomorrow (Saturday and runs th until 29 April.

Motoring

Mondeo gets a big boost

The engine will also feature in the USmarket Fusion and the European Mondeo, which will go on sale in Britain towards the end of 2014. The Euro-spec car will also be offered with Ford’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine. Ford’s new 1.5-litre unit has been designed and built for global markets, but the launch of the engine in China is particularly apt because the tax rate there goes up for cars with engines larger than 1.5 litres. The unit is expected to provide similar horsepower and torque performance

to Ford’s current 1.6-litre EcoBoost in its lower state of tune (148bhp and 240Nm respectively), while delivering improved fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions. It is the company’s fifth EcoBoost engine in a range which was launched with a 3.5-litre V6 EcoBoost in 2009. Ford added the 2.0-litre EcoBoost in 2010; the 1.6-litre EcoBoost in 2011; and last year, they launched the three-cylinder 1.0-litre EcoBoost. Like all EcoBoost engines, this new 1.5-litre features a turbo-charger, direct fuel-injection

and variable valve-timing. New innovations for this particular engine include a computercontrolled clutch on the belt-driven water pump. Ford claim it will improve efficiency as it reduces warm-up time. They will build the 1.5-litre EcoBoost at their Romanian factory in Craiova, starting later this month, with other locations to be announced in the future. Across all EcoBoost engines, Ford now have the capacity to build 1.6 million unitsannually, which bodes well for a really healthy future.

MG wizards dream up an SUV stunner WOW! This is the first dynamic sketch of MG’s CS concept car, which is making its debut at this week’s Shanghai Motor Show.

And the way MG are talking, it is far more than just an idea because the company describe as “a stunning, urban SUV concept, designed to slot into the compact SUV sector. They acknowledge this is one of the “fastestgrowing areas of the worldwide automotive market, where style and sports utility dominate fashion trends.” What’s more, the CS will become “MG’s first production urban SUV,” confirming that the crossover, just about the same size as the Nissan Juke, will be taking to the road in the near future. MG have toyed with the idea of adding an SUV to their line-up for some time, having brought the Icon concept to last year’s Beijing Motor Show.

But while that car featured decidedly retro looks, the CS concept is much more contemporary. The angular headlights, gloss-black Apillars and aggressive bumpers are much more in keeping with the production version of the UK-designed MG3 supermini, which is also expected to debut in Shanghai. The CS concept, dreamed up by Anthony Williams-Kenny, MG’s Global Design Director, and his team, is intended to “expand the global reach of the MG brand”. When it makes production, the SUV is likely to use the forthcoming MG5’s platform, and its 1.5-litre turbo-charged petrol engine. That’s so they can maximise the car’s appeal by avoiding the extra tax levied on cars with larger engines in China. But whether the CS will make its appearance in the UK - or over here for that matter remains to be seen. It’s certainly a stunning looker, that’s for sure.

Now that’s what you call red hot! BUGATTI’S Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse has become the world’s fastest opentop car, clocking 254.04mph. That was the good news for Bugatti. The bad news came days earlier when it was stripped of its world’s fastest production car title days

earlier by the Hennessy Venom GT, which managed 265.7mph. The Veyron, driven by Chinese racing driver Anthony Liu, hit the max on a run at the Volkswagen Group’s private Ehra-Lessien test track, near the old East German border. The 8.0-litre, W16 engine in the Vitesse produces 1,184bhp and 1,500Nm of torque, and it also uses a specially-

19th April - 25th April 2013

developed roof spoiler and intricate windbreak to ensure the cabin remains calm, even at very high speeds. An understandably overjoyed Liu said: “This was a very exciting moment. The car, even at such high speeds, is incredibly comfortable and stable. “With an open top, you can really experience the sound of the engine. And yet, at even

higher speeds, I did not get compromised by the wind.” The iconic orange-andblack car used to set the record is appearing on the manufacturer’s stand at the Shanghai Show. And Bugatti are also using this opportunity to produce a limited run of eight “World Record Car” editions of the Grand Sport Vitesse, each car costing nearly £2m.

Tenerife after Marino help

THIS Sunday is the most important two hours of the season for Tenerife’s two senior clubs.

Last weekend, Noah's late equaliser at Caudal meant that CD Marino avoided relegation, while CDT were left a little frustrated. Since I was on holiday, Adi Benson wrote the match report. With the home straight now in sight, Tenerife still find themselves with work to do to clinch the League title, something they should have been assured of weeks ago. Save for the recent 5-2 win, they have not been firing on all cylinders for a while now and only the fact that the chasing teams seem happy to settle for the positions they currently occupy, still sees them top of the pile. So the scene was set for a good home per-

ousness among the fans. This continued during the game, and you can’t help but wonder if it made its way down on to the pitch and among the players. Fran Ochoa replaced the suspended Ros in midfield, alongside the impressive Alberto. There was still no place in the starting XI for Suso, despite his heroics during the last home match, Cevera again choosing to play

formance. The sun was shining, the mercury was rising and 9,412 fans were heading to the Heliodoro. There are just six games left to play, with three of them at home: win those and CD Tenerife finish on top and just two games from promotion. I expected to find an atmosphere buzzing with expectation but, as I made my way into the stadium, I sensed nerv-

Cristo Martin. Tenerife started brightly as expected from the home team. The passing was crisp, they moved the ball with confidence and closed down Sporting whenever they were in possession. But they seemed to be lacking a cutting edge. We know Moyano and Llorente like to get forward from full-back and support the wingers, but every time they got into decent positions down the flanks, there was no support in the middle. Alberto and Ochoa were sitting deep, Ayoze, the impressive youngster, was drifting out to the wings and Aridane was being his normal self, lumbering around and getting marked to easily. When they finally did get it right, in the 17th minute, they scored. Llorente played a great ball into the area. Aridane struck it well with his right foot but the keeper was able to parry. He then got a second bite of the cherry and made no mistake this time with his left foot his only genuine contribution to the game). It was that simple: time to kick on a grab a second goal, but they reverted to type, sat back and allowed Sporting B to get into the game.

The first half then passed without incident, until a couple of minutes before the break. Sporting won themselves a corner and the ball dropped right into the danger zone. The Tenerife defence were nowhere to be seen, allowing Guerrero to level for Sporting with a fine header. The response was immediate from Tenerife and they stepped up a gear, forcing Sporting B on to the back foot. An excellent move on the stroke of half-time saw first Ayoze hit the post, then Cristo hitting the other post before the keeper finally collected the ball. And that was the first half done. Cervera made a substitution at the start of the second half, removing the ineffective Ochoa and brining on Suso. From the start, he set about putting in his normal terrier-like performance and it wasn’t long before he pulled off his now-trademark run down the flank. He beat a player or two, drove to the deadball line and squared the ball across the front of goal. It went past the Sporting B defenders and goalkeeper and in at the back post came Ayoze. Just a touch was needed but, somehow, he

missed the ball completely as it seemed to pass under his foot and out it went for a throwin. This did nothing to settle the home fans’ nerves, and even when they found out that Leganes had drawn with Salamanca, it raised a murmur only. The visitors saw a bit more of the ball in the second half but never really threatened, and Yeray entered the fray in place of Chechu. It was Cervera’s way of saying: “Right Leganes have drawn, so a draw will do for us as well.” He gave Guillem a run-out in the place of Chechu, but he was sorely starved of service as Sporting B did well in breaking down any attacks Tenerife could muster. There was still time, though, for Ayoze to miss his second open goal of the afternoon. The ball was played through the Sporting defence, their keeper came to collect but slipped and it ran past him into the area. Ayoze reacted quickest and got to the ball first. The goal was at his mercy, but he was getting close attention from a defender (I’m being kind). He pulled back his foot … and managed to hit the outside of the post, putting the ball out for a goal-kick. His body language said it all! Sporting tried to push for a goal in the last few minutes, going for the old smash-and-grab routine we have seen many times before at the Heliodoro routine. But Tenerife stood firm and both teams settled for a point. TPT derail a title charge by Exiles TENERIFE Pool Tables produced one of the upsets of the season in Division Two on Tuesday. Nobody would have given Fat Nick’s side a prayer against titlechasing Exiles A, but they obviously didn’t read the script. TPT won the first frame, only for Exiles A to take the next two. That should have calmed their nerves, and they would have expected to kick on and win the match. However, TPT held in there - 2-2 became 3-2, then 4-2, 5-2 and, amazingly, 6-2 as the panic alarm went off for Exiles. They scrambled a couple back, but it was too big a task. Nick took the crucial 11th frame to give TPT

a famous win and jettison Exiles’ title dreams. Or had they? You see, leaders Next Door suffered a surprised defeat as well to give Exiles hope. Next Door have been top all season but they were never in it at home to James Place, who could yet get back in the promotion shake-up. James’ lads were 3-0 up and never looked like throwing it away. With father-and-son team Jim and James winning all six of their frames, the visitors coasted to an 8-4 success. This Tuesday’s barnstormer between Next Door and Exiles could decide the fate of both sides. Third-place Treehouse A had no problems beating Bluebell

It will be prayer-mat time on Sunday at 11am, Tenerife have

January. That said, they are still unbeaten at home, only Salamanca and, amazingly, CD Marino left Oviedo with a clean sheet. In many ways, the Tenerife match is more about them than us. Bar 13 had waited a long time to get back in the win column, and Hoppys were happy on Monday as they sneaked past Toscales B 7-5. In a fine match, Tel was the villain for Pink, sinking three blacks but winning one frame only. Ouch! Tenerife Hammers C ground out another win. They do like a long match, and they had too much stamina for Terrace B who should have got something before surrendering at 8-4. Meanwhile, on Amarilla Golf, The Peacocks got a point at Terrace A after Carl S 7-balled Adi to deny Terrace A a rare win!

Yet for me, this could be perfectly set up for CDT. They will defend deep and look for the counter-attack. Star player Inigo Ros is back for Tenerife, and I fully expect experienced old heads Suso and Luismi to start. I'd even go with David Medina in midfield. Tenerife have a six point lead which, is, in reality seven with their superior head-to-head record over Leganes,

who are here on Sunday to face CD Marino, who need a win to avoid relegation. And Marino are flying at home. They have won four of their last five in Las Americas and taken the scalps of Real Oviedo and Salamanca. They will be busting a gut to add to that on Sunday, and I urge all CD Tenerife fans to put their shirts on and cheer Marino home.
