Miracle of kidnapped girls after being held for amazing 10 years

FORMER school bus driver Ariel Castro has been charged with kidnapping and raping three women, who were missing for an astonishing 10 years.

Castro appeared in Cleveland’s Municipal Court on yesterday (Thursday), but his two older brothers, arrested with him on Monday, were released. None of the women gave police any indication that they were involved, and prosecutors brought no charges against the brothers, citing a lack of evidence. But Castro was charged with four counts of kidnapping, covering the captives and the daughter born to one of them, and three counts of rape against all three women. He buried his head in his shirt as a lawyer described the “horrifying ordeal” endured by Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, Michelle Knight and Ms Berry’s six-year-old daughter during their captivity. The unemployed 52-year-old did not enter a plea and briefly filled out some paperwork, with his hands cuffed as the court set bail at two million dollars per case, which effectively ensured he would remain behind bars. The astonishing case has captured global attention, and quite right-

ly so, especially as the women, undetected for a decade, were held captive in a house in their own neighbourhood. Prosecutor Brian Murphy told the court that Castro had made a “premeditated, deliberate and depraved” decision to snatch three women from the street on separate occasions. The prosecutor added: “He kidnapped the women to be used in whatever self-serving, self-gratifying way he saw fit. “While in captivity, they withstood repeated beatings. They were bound, restrained, and they were sexually assaulted – basically, never free to leave this residence.” He described Castro’s home as “a prison” to the women and young girl, before adding: “Today, the situation’s turned, Your Honour, “Mr Castro stands before you a captive ... the women are free to resume their lives that were interrupted.” Kathleen DeMetz, Castro’s public defender, said she expected her client to be placed on suicide watch, in a cell on his own, when he returned to the county jail. Police revealed his three alleged victims had been let out of the house only twice in 10 years. City councilman Brian Cummins, briefed on the case, said the women were subjected to prolonged sexual and psychological abuse, and suffered miscarriages never finding a chance to

10th May - 16th May 2013

escape until this week. He admitted that many details were still unclear, including the number of pregnancies and the conditions under which the miscarriages occurred. Mr Cummins also said the women had been kept in the basement for some time, without having access to the rest of the house. “We know that the victims have confirmed miscarriages, but with who, how many and what conditions, we don’t know,” he added. “It sounds pretty gruesome.” Police officials left many questions unanswered, but Deputy Police Chief Ed Tomba said the women could remember being outside only twice during their entire time in captivity. “We were told they left the house and went into the garage in disguise,” he said. “The trio were not kept in the same

room, but knew they were not alone - Ariel kept everyone at a distance.” But the big mystery was, he said, how the women were kept in the house so long. “As far as the circumstances inside the home and the control he may have had over those girls … I think that’s going to take us a long time to figure that out," he added. He also said a paternity test on Castro would be carried out to establish who fathered Amanda Berry’s child, who is now six. Ahead of Castro's court appearance, a picture has been emerging of the life the women endured during their time in captivity. Ms Berry, now 27, was reportedly forced to give birth to her daughter in an inflatable children’s paddling pool. Ms Knight, the oldest

Ariel Castro in Cleveland Municipal Court yesterday (Thursday)

captive, alleged that Castro ordered her to help with the birth, threatening to kill her if the baby did not survive. According to a police report, obtained by local TV station WKYCTV, Ms Knight said she gave Jocelyn mouth-tomouth, successfully reviving her moments after she was born. Mr Tomba refused to comment on reports that the women had become pregnant on several occasions, but lost the babies after their captor beat them. Ariel Castro allegedly “celebrated” the anniversary of each woman’s abduction by serving them cake and dinner, according to reports. A cousin of one victim told the New York Times: “He would celebrate their abduction day as their new birthday.” Police also released recordings of the moment stunned medics arrived at the scene after the women escaped. Mr Tomba refused to discuss details of evidence discovered in the home, although earlier, City Police Chief Michael McGrath said the women were “bound, and there were chains and ropes in the hall”. Police have recovered more than 200 pieces of evidence from the house, and they have been searching a second property as part of their investigation. Ms Berry, Ms DeJesus, and Ms Knight were aged 16, 14 and 20 respectively when they went missing

around a decade ago. All three were rescued when a screaming Ms Berry alerted a neighbour, who helped them escape by smashing through the bottom of the front door, Amanda called a 911 police dispatcher and said: “Help me. I’m Amanda Berry. I’ve been kidnapped, and I've been missing for 10 years and I’m here, I’m free now.” It was the most incredible end to one of the most incredible stories ever. Ms Berry and Ms DeJesus have been welcomed back at their homes with balloons and banners, and crowds cheered as they were reunited with their families. Sandra Ruiz, an aunt of Ms DeJesus, said: “There are not enough words to express the joy we feel at the return of our family member, Gina.” Ms Berry’s sister, Beth Serrano, thanked the public for their “support and courage over the years”. Ms Knight was understood yesterday (Thursday) to be in a good condition at a local hospital and has yet to appear in public. Following criticism of police handling of the case, Mr McGrath said he was “absolutely” sure officers did everything they could to find the women. He disputed claims from neighbours that officials had been called to the property previously when suspicions were raised.

Jobless woe for Canaries

THE number of jobless people in the Canary Islands rose by more than 4,100 last month, It was an increase of 1.42% against the previous month and meant that, apart from Valencia, the Canaries was the only region where the dole queues got longer. Of more concern, however, is the number of people who have exceeded their unemployment benefits limit and are living on hand-outs from charities and other sources. The figures for these unfortunates rose dramatically in March by more than 4,300 to 130,314. That is more than 44% of the total number of jobless people.

BRITISH Ex-pats living in Spain or Tenerife will have to apply to Northern Ireland in future when they renew their passports.

This will come as a blow to those who save money by getting friends or family to collect their new passports in the UK and bring them over. It cost them just £72.50 now, which is less than half the £147.86 (including postage) they will be charged from Monday (13th May) to renew a passport in Belfast. As the Identity & Passport Service (IPS) points out, however, the charge for overseas passport applications is much dearer because it is based on the cost of

providing the service. But because the number of applications from abroad is much smaller than it should be, all British passports will now be issued under one roof – in Belfast. Once the balance is evened up worldwide, IPS hopes to bring the fees for overseas and UK passports more into line, most probably in 2014. This means that if you live here and need to renew your passport legitimately; your application must be sent directly to Belfast’s Identity & Passport Service from Monday, instead of the regional passport processing hub in Madrid. All necessary information about the revised process, including a new IPS overseas application form, can be found at www.gov.uk/ overseas-passports.

Andy Hamilton, head of the regional passport processing centre in Madrid, says: “In real terms, all this means is that British nationals living in Spain now need to send their applications to a different address.” In Tenerife terms, however, it will cost the short-cut Brits twice as much because they will now have to use the Belfast service - unless they take a chance and carry on as normal. Mr Hamilton added: “Current passport processing times remain the same. If you are renewing your passport, you should allow at least four weeks from the date the fee is taken and all the correct documentation has been received.” “If you are applying for the first time, or you are replacing a lost or stolen passport, you

should allow at least six weeks.” The only other change is that the current passport helpline callcharges are being removed. Instead of paying for a premium rate phone line, customers will now have to pay for the cost of a call to the UK only. British nationals who do not have internet access, or who want advice, can call the IPS Customer Service Centre on +44 (0) 300 222 0000. People in Tenerife who need to travel urgently but whose normal passport is unavailable, should contact the British Consulate in Tenerife (922 286 863) or email info.consulate@ fco.gov.uk The Consulate may be able to issue an Emergency Travel Document to help you travel.

Exposaldo opens its doors

This year also the admission price is only three euros and that can be redeemed against purchases within the fair. Carlos Alonso stressed the importance of the event both for merchants who have a chance to sell their goods to customers who have the opportunity to get good products at very affordable prices. “This year our aim is to beat the previous par-

ticipation record to exceed 140 stalls, 25 percent of them new.” “Exposaldo Tenerife occupies more than 15,000 square meters in

the exhibition center, making it the biggest commercial offer in the Canaries” said Efrain Medina. Visitors can purchase

products such as textiles, accessories, footwear, electrical appliances, toys, decoration, furniture, cars for sale, and even homes.

This week

THE port of Los Cristianos will host the first international festival – ‘Boleros desde el puerto.’ tomorrow, (Saturday 11TH May). It's a cultural initiative that will promote Tenerife Ports. The

location selected is the esplanade used as the pre-boarding area for inter-island traffic, located very close to the harbour entrance and overlooking the beach of Los Cristianos.

This area has capacity for two thousand people, the stage will be installed, approximately eighty square meters, which will lead to an intimate, warm feel ideal for contextualising the Cuban themes

chosen. The event will be broadcast live on Spanish TV. The two hour programme will consist of classical pieces plus new trends of the genre. Definitely an event not to be missed.

New airport director

THE president of the Cabildo, Ricardo Melchior, met the new director of Tenerife South Airport, Santiago Saenz Yus, on Tuesday.

Santiago Saenz Yus took up his position at the beginning of April. President Melchior congratulated him on his new position; Tenerife South is one of the largest and most profitable airports in Spain. Yus Saenz began his career in AENA in 2002, as Associate Director at the Directorate General. Between 2004 and 2006 he held senior positions in the Planning and Management Control and in 2006 took

over the Department of Business Plans Airport Development Directorate. He has been Chief of Staff to the Director of Malaga Airport, 2007 to 2011. Since June 2011 he was Director at Almeria airport. Interestingly, also present at the meet-

ing was Mario Otero, the Director General of Spanish Airports and Air Navigation (AENA) in the Canary Islands. At the beginning of April the Tenerife Cabildo requested that Mario Otero be dismissed due to a number of disagreements over many months, however,

culminating in the “unspeakable treatment of the Cabildo during the welcome of the first flight of British Airways, connecting Tenerife to London five days a week. It appears from this meeting that Otero still has his job despite the Cabildo’s request.

In our continual quest to keep the Canarian Weekly fresh and current for you, this week we’ve made a few tweaks to the paper’s layout, which we hope you will like.

One of the changes is that we will be dedicating additional pages to sport; our aim is to give you a more rounded view of what’s happening globally in the sporting world. Also, in the coming weeks we will be introducing a number of contributors putting pen to paper about subjects which they feel passionate about. This week in the news it’s been a week of shocks – first with the three women being found in Ohio and then Sir Alex leaving Manchester Utd! A news story is a

moving feast, otherwise it wouldn’t be news. Last week we reported that there was outrage at Aberdeen Airport over the cancellation of Thomson summer flights to Tenerife. I have since been contacted by the Tenerife Cabildo who inform me that according to Turismo de Tenerife’s Promotions Director Pia Louw, “It is still running, Thomson had some problems due to flight changes but in the end the operations from Thomsonfly are unchanged. Thomsonfly has a capacity of up to 5000 passengers for Summer 2013.” My suggestion would be for Thomson to issue a press release stating this, as the British Press haven’t got the message yet. So to make it clear you can still fly from Aberdeen to Tenerife with Thomson – there is no change. Woo hoo! Until next week…

Tenerife Pearl’s charity gems! T E N ER I F E Pearl has put its weight behind the Spanish Red Cross to raise funds to support the “Back to School” solidarity campaign.

The company, which specialises in pearl jewellery, has signed a four-month agreement with the Santa Cruz branch to help finance some 100 deprived minors throughout the Island. They are based in the municipalities of Adeje, Arona, Puerto

de la Cruz, Candelaria, Santiago del Teide, Guía de Isora and Santa Cruz. The initiative is based on the sale of a “fundraising bracelet” made by Tenerife Pearl in its eight shops, based in Armeñime, Candelaria and Puerto de la Cruz, and Gran Canaria’s Playa del Inglés, Meloneras, Arguineguín and Mogán. The bracelets will also be sold through the company’s online shops: www. tenerifepearl.com and www.perlacanaria.com. For each 9,95-euro bracelet sold, Tenerife Pearl will donate one euro to the Red Cross, which will spend the total amount received on various school materials. These include such items as pencils, notebooks, pens and even sports shoes, to

help ease the plight of families struggling to kit their infants out for the new school term in September. It adds up to basic aid in areas where households have been forced to cuts costs, simply to survive until another payday at the end of each month. And this is where the Spanish Red Cross comes in, bolstering one of the measures taken by the charity group to strengthen the “Back to School” appeal. It was actually launched last year to cater for 300,000 people throughout the country, who are considered extremely vulnerable And the Tenerife initiative comes in addition to the two million people cared for annually by the Red Cross.

Make a Spanish Will to protect your assets here THE Spanish notarial system provides more security for those who make a valid Will.

This is because there is a Central Wills Registry, where each notarial Will is registered by the notary. The original Will is always kept on the Protocol (archive) of the notary, where you sign the Will. The information at the Central Wills Registry will be the date and place where you made the Will; your full name

Inheritance news, By De Cotta Law and date of birth, and the names of your parents will assist with identifying you. A valid English Will must be witnessed by two people, who are physically present when you sign. These witnesses should not stand to benefit from your Will, or be family members. However, although Wills can be registered in England, there is no obligation to do so, and most Wills are kept at home or with the local

solicitor in England, who prepared them for you. Leaving Spanish assets in a Will It is always advisable to execute a valid Spanish Will before a notary if you own Spanish assets. This is important because property does not generally pass to your surviving spouse automatically in Spain. In the UK, you can generally notify the Land Registry, or the banks. etc, to transfer property into your sole

name And in some cases, where the estate is not of a high value, no other formalities are required. If these are required, an application can be made for Letters of administration on intestacy. This is very different in Spain as the property passes independently to your appointed heirs, and there is a procedure required to prove who should benefit. Spanish law applies the law of your nationality to your estate. Therefore, if you die leaving Spanish assets and have not made a valid Will in either country, your heirs need to prove firstly, the law that should be applied on intestacy. and secondly, that they are entitled to inherit. This applies to your spouse, even though

you may be joint-owners of the assets. For some time, we have been advising British nationals in Spain that it is wise to state the law you wish to be applied to your estate. While it would be difficult to overturn the application of your national law to your estate, in Wills made with this clause, there will be added certainty in 2014. This is when the European legislation changes to state that you can elect the law to be applied to your succession, and that this will be binding. The important thing to remember is that prevention is not only better than cure in this situation - it is also less costly than cure. De Cotta Law Open Day De Cotta Law, the firm of English lawyers and Spanish abogados with offices in the Canary

Islands and mainland Spain, is holding an Open Day in Tenerife on Monday, 20th May, from 9.30am-5pm. All legal consultations throughout the day will be completely FREE, so to book your private consultation, please call our office on 922 719 520, or email tenerife@ decottalaw.net Visit De Cotta Law’s offices, opposite The Scotch Corner bar, in San Eugenio, Playa de Las Americas, Adeje, and take advantage of a free, private, legal consultation. For their eyes only! A SECRET message for children has been cleverly built into a new child-abuse awareness poster.

The Anar Foundation Spanish charity has used a special printing technique which means that those looking at it from different angles see a different image. So, for any person over 1.35m, the poster shows the image of a young boy and a message that reads: “Sometimes, child abuse is only visible to the child suffering it.” But a child, or anyone under 1.35m, will clearly be able to see the poster boy with bruises and the message: “If somebody hurts you, phone us

and we’ll help you,” alongside the European child helpline number. The poster tells abused children where to seek help, even if the youngster is accompanied by his or her abuser. The Anar Foundation was concerned that if the poster contained a phone number seen by abuser and child, the adult might try to

10th May - 16th May 2013

dissuade the youngster from seeking help. Grey Spain, the advertisement agency behind the poster, said: “It is a message exclusively for them, hidden from adults’ eyes “It uses a lenticular to combine two images, and we have calculated an area visible only to children under 10 - and a warning for adults.”

Gizmo’s ‘tail’ of the unexpected

NIKKI ATTREE, the digital artist and photographer, who has supported Tenerife’s animal rescue centres for years, has come up with a novel idea – in more ways than one!

She has enlisted the aid of husband Richard and pet dog Gizmo to produce what she describes as a “wooftastic tail”. It’s a book entitled Nobody’s Poodle, about a loveable ex-pat pooch uprooted from his home in cold, damp, muddy England to start a new life in Tenerife. And it’s actually “penned” by Gizmo, himself a rescue dog, who writes, from a canine point of view, of course, about settling down in a new country and coping with the cultural differences. He has also had to learn the language! As he explains: “Although woof-speak is universal, mas o menos, there are still some differences which need to be understood. ”otherwise, a dog can have muchos problemas with his furry Latin amigos.” The ex-pat/travel genre has been popularised by some successful books, but until now the take on it by a man’s

Page 8

best friend has been little explored. Nikki says: “We’re familiar with Driving over Lemons, but there hasn’t been a Bouncing over Bones. “Most of Tenerife’s ex-pat Brits know and love Joe Cawley’s More Ketchup than Salsa, but we’ve all been waiting for More Saliva than Salsa.” But Nobody’s Poodle is much more than an expat diary, though. It’s a gripping story, with a plot that is the mutt’s nuts, so to speak. Gizmo, the intrepid hero is probably more street Doodle than swanky Poodle, but he’s very much his own dog. He’s all about standing up for the underdog, and it gets him into a fair few scrapes on the mean streets of Costa del Scorchio. He’s also something of a canine philosopher, and along the way, readers will learn a lot about their universe. For instance, not many people know that dogs invented the idea of sharing information via a network (their “SmellNet” predates our internet by several millennia), along with on-line messaging (“SmellMail”), social networking (“SmellBook”), and wi-fi (“Wiffy”). Dogs realised a long time ago that time was more like a small, round thing rather than a long, thin thing. More like a dog chas-

ing its own tail, rather than an endless piece of string, or an infinitelylong ladder - or whatever else humans think it’s like. Gizmo explains that dogs are like Zen Buddhist monks. They live in a present-tense universe, they’re dogged, and they’re stoic, accepting whatever life throws at them. That’s just as well considering some of the smelly stuff that gets thrown his way and just misses the fan. The book, full of twists and turns with a cast of wonderful woofers, and some beautiful illustrations, will make you laugh and it will make you cry. It’s a book for doglovers of all ages, an insight into the canine universe, and a celebration of their Zen-like stoicism in the face of human stupidity, indifference, and cruelty. It was was inspired by Nikki’s educational and promotional work with Tenerife’s animal-rescue shelters. She hopes to donate some of the profits to help them, so make sure that you order your copy - and tell all your friends about the book. It is available from Amazon as a paperback/ Kindle e-book priced six euros and four euros respectively. To sniff out more information, visit the website www.NobodysPoodle.com

Teacher strike ACCORDING to data compiled by the Ministry of Education, Universities and Sustainability of the Canary Islands 70.43 percent of non-university students missed school in the Canary Islands yesterday due to a teacher’s strike. This figure represents 102,950 students throughout the archipelago. By province, in Las Palmas the figure was 72.3 percent, while in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, it was less at 68 per-

cent. However, only 15.4 percent did not turn up for work, which means that only 3,246 teachers supported the strike day. The education system operated as normal with parents receiving letters stating that there would be a higher child/teacher ration than normal. The strike was the education community expressing its opposition to the measures that central government want to impose in education.

Barceló Viajes have new base Barceló Viajes tour operators are making Tenerife South their operational hub, located at Tenerife Sur airport.

Page 10

The Barceló Group already have a significant presence in the Islands through the hotel business and now Barceló Viajes will expand their operation here to Reina Sofia Airport. Connectivity will strengthen through

connection with 10 mainland airports. Barceló Viajes unveiled its strategic plan for business development in Tenerife at a press conference this week. At the press conference Tenerfie Tourism

Minister, Carlos Alonso thanked the company for its commitment to the island that certainly “will boost economic growth and job generation which is what we need right now.” In this sense, the Deputy Minister of Tourism of the Canary Islands, Ricardo Fernandez de la Puente stressed that increased air connectivity is needed at a time when national tourism needs help to recover. Johan Tyren, Director of International Development Expansion emphasised the fact that “it is a key destination for Barceló Trips Canaries as we believe it has great potential in the domestic market and we are very grateful for the institutional support we have received. Barceló Group already have a significant presence in the Islands through the hotel business and now Barceló Viajes tour operator are active in the airline business. A strong commitment that we believe will benefit in terms of increased flow of travellers but also in stimulating economic activity and job creation linked to tourism.” Barceló Viajes will base their airline at the airport Tenerife Sur. From now on, one of the two planes of the airline, recently acquired by Barceló Viajes, will have their headquarters here.

Cruise capital YESTERDAY (Thursday) Santa Cruz welcomed two large cruise ships, “Queen Victoria” and “Costa neoRomantica”, which together brought to the island almost five thousand visitors, 3,365 of them cruise passengers and 1,598 crew members. The “Independence of the Seas” will call at Tenerife tomorrow (Saturday), bringing an additional 3,800 cruise passengers and 1,200 crew.

Tunnel – what a joke! Last week we informed you about the opening of the new tunnel in Santa Cruz; allowing cars to go underneath and pedestrians on top. Now, just days later the Canary Islands’ Government have announced that there is no money available to finish the project. The massive project was planned to extend the pedestrianised area beyond the Plaza de España to nearer the dock area with landscaping and street furniture enhancing what is probably the most prestigious area of the city and the

first thing cruise passengers see after disembarking. This is now in doubt. A spokesman from the Regional Ministry of Works blamed the lack of funding on the two years of central government cuts, saying that money is now only available for essential works and repairs within the islands. So it seems, despite spending millions on taking traffic underground, the area will remain an eyesore for the foreseeable future. Just like the island ringroad.

New Pensions Bill will affect the non-workers THE British Government’s State Pensions’ Reform Bill was unveiled during the Queen’s Speech on Wednesday, spelling out good and bad news for couples.

It all depends on their circumstances. The good news is that a basic, weekly pension of £144 will come into force in 2016. But the bad news will affect certain spouses because they will not be paid a pension when their partners die. There is some good news on this front, however, because existing pensioners in Tenerife and other parts of the globe will not be affected by the reform, whatever their position. The present rules

enable those who have never paid National Insurance to claim a weekly state pension

of £66, based on their spouses’ contributions. But this payment will cease in 2016, saving the

Government hundreds of millions of pounds in payments to those spouses, especially the

ones living abroad. The Government says 200,000 overseas residents claim a married person’s allowance at a total cost of £410m a year - and more than half of these claimants have never been to the UK. The Government believes this is unfair on those who have made National Insurance contributions - and the new rules will also affect some spouses in Britain. Pensions Minister Steve Webb said that fewer UK-based pensioners would be affected because people who live and work there generally build up state pension entitlement themselves. He added: “Most people would think, ‘You pay National Insurance, you get a pension’. “But folk who have never been here - but happen to be married to

someone who has - are getting pensions.” Mr Webb said the reform would stop new claims of this kind, but stressed that existing pensioners would be unaffected. “We are getting more women married to British men who are claiming a pension based on his record,” he pointed out. The new rule seems to be aimed at those pensioners who, having lost their wives, then pop over to, say, Thailand or the Philippines to collect a new one! Yes, it does happen it’s a thriving “business” in the Far East - and, until now, those women have been able to cash in when the old boys die. So those widowers looking for a new bride will have to get a move on. They’ve got just two years left before the pension rights run out.

Honeymooner killed by shark A BRIDE GROOM has been attacked and killed by a shark while surfing near a beach on a French island.

The 36-year-old French honeymooner was just off the popular beach of Brisants de Saint-Gilles, on the west coast of Reunion, when a shark charged at him twice. A nearby swimmer raised the alarm when he saw blood on the water, prompting lifeguards to rescue the victim. Tragically, the man had lost a lot of blood and was in cardiac and respiratory arrest. He was carried back to the beach, but lifeguards were unable to revive him. The shark had bitten the surfer on the arm and on the thigh. It was the third such death in the past

Page 12

two years off the French island. His new wife, who was on the beach when the attack happened, has been treated for shock. According to French newspapers, the couple are from Morteau, in eastern France. Two attacks, one fatal and one causing serious injury, happened just days apart last summer. It prompted surfers on the island to call for the closure of a local marine nature reserve, which they blame for an increase in shark attacks since 2011. People have also been deployed near beaches, on boats and

in the water, to keep an eye on swimmers and surfers and, hopefully, spot sharks before they attack. Reunion, in the middle of the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar and south of Mauritius, is considered to be an attractive tourist destination because of its natural environment. The beach where this latest attack occurred is now open again, but swimming and other water activities have been banned until further notice. Last year, 78 shark attacks were reported around the world, eight of which were fatal.

www.canarianweekly.com EasyJet and its partners Airbus and Nicarnica are planning the final stage of testing for the AVOID technology. Last week easyJet flew back a tonne of volcanic ash from Iceland collected by the Institute of Earth Sciences in Reykjavik.

The ash, dried to create the consistency of fine talc, will be used in a unique experiment which is planned for this summer. The next phase of testing will involve two Airbus test planes, one of which has the ability to disperse the ash into the atmosphere, thereby creating an artificial ash cloud for a second Airbus test aircraft with the AVOID technology fitted to detect and avoid at over 30,000ft. The experiment, which is expected to be conducted in August, will take place when the Seviri and Calypso satellites are aligned to be able to image

Easyjet tests ash cloud technology

the ash cloud from space thereby helping to prove the accuracy and effectiveness of the AVOID technology. Ian Davies, easyJet’s Engineering Director, commented: “The threat from Icelandic volcanoes continues and so finalising the approval of the AVOID technology is as crucial now as ever to ensure we never again see the scenes of spring 2010 when all flying ceased for several days. “Transporting a tonne of volcanic ash from Iceland is an important step in the final journey of testing the technology and moving towards commercial certification.” Dr Fred Prata, inventor of the AVOID technology, said: “This is the perfect science experiment. We will know exactly how much

10th May - 16th May 2013

ash we have placed in the atmosphere, and also its concentration and composition. AVOID will then measure it and demonstrate the technology.” Manfred Birnfeld,

Senior flight Test Engineer for Airbus, said: “We are all working towards reducing the impact of volcanic ash clouds, and the technology being developed in AVOID

could prove valuable in identifying airspace free of ash contamination and provide data for pilots and airlines on the precise localisation of ash clouds. “This is why Airbus is supporting the development of AVOID and we hope this system will contribute towards three dimensional, dynamic mapping tools to allow the airlines to take necessary decisions for a safe flight under the full knowledge of current location of ash clouds.” The AVOID system can be likened to a weather radar for ash. Created by Dr Fred Prata, Chief Technology Officer at Nicarnica Aviation, the system comprises of infrared technology (developed by the US military) fitted to aircraft to supply images to pilots and

an airline’s operations control centre. The images will enable pilots to see an ash cloud, up to 100 km ahead of the aircraft and at altitudes between 5,000ft and 50,000ft, thus allowing them to make small adjustments to the plane’s flight path to avoid any ash cloud. The concept is very similar to weather radars which are standard on commercial airliners today. On the ground, information from aircraft with AVOID technology would be used to build an accurate image of the volcanic ash cloud using real time data. This could open up large areas of airspace that would otherwise be closed during a volcanic eruption, which would benefit passengers by minimising disruption.

Couple missing from cruise ship

A SEARCH was launched yesterday (Thursday) for two passengers, who disappeared overnight off Australia’s eastern coast.

The 30-year-old man and 26-year-old woman were reported missing when the Carnival Cruise ship Spirit docked in Sydney. The first indication came when they failed to claim their luggage. Police, who examined the onboard video, believe the couple went overboard about 93 miles off Foster, New South Wales. Detective Supt Mark Hutchings, of the New South Wales Police Marine Area Command, said: “We believe they were up on mid-deck, which is halfway up the side of the ship and is quite a way to fall.”

The couple, travelling with family and friends on a 10-day Pacific Island cruise, were sharing a cabin. Despite the 135-mile distance from Foster to Sydney,

Ex-cop jailed for selling info A FORMER police sergeant was jailed for 10 months at the Old Bailey yesterday (Thursday) for attempting to sell information to national newspapers.

James Bowes contacted the now-defunct News of the World and said police child-protection officers had gone to the Brighton home of Katie Price’s former husband, Peter Andre. This followed a report that the couple’s daughter, Princess Tiaamii, then aged two, had been injured in 2010. The police team found she had no untoward injuries, and the matter

Page 14

was dropped, the court was told. But Bowes, who worked in Brighton for Sussex Police, emailed the newspaper trying to cash in on the information. However, the story was printed with details from another source and Bowes received nothing. The 30-year-old, from Steyning, West Sussex, pleaded guilty last month to misconduct in public office. The court also heard that he earned £500 for supplying the Sun newspaper with information about a child who was bitten by a fox. Bowes was charged by officers from Operation Elveden, the Met Police probe into police corruption.

police remained optimistic last night as we went to press. “It’s game on and we are going to be pulling out all stops to try to find these people,” said

Det Supt Hutchings. This is the latest incident in a series of high-profile cases involving the cruise line. In February, an

engine-room fire left the Carnival Triumph adrift in the Gulf of Mexico. Disgusted passengers reported overflowing toilets and human

waste running down the walls in some parts of the ship. And on a March cruise, the Carnival Dream lost power, and some toilets stopped working.

Tragedy of a wife who ate deadly mushrooms A WOMAN died after picking one of the world’s most poisonous mushrooms in her garden - and eating it! Christina Hale died from multiple organ failure five days after using “death caps” while cooking an evening meal for her and her husband The death cap is so poisonous that eating just half of one can be fatal, and there is no antidote. Mrs Hale had gathered the deadly fungi at the couple’s Somerset home in Bridgwater and used them to make mushroom soup last November. Her husband, Jocelyn Lynch, survived because he ate a smaller amount than his wife. Mr Lynch said at the Taunton inquest: “We

had picked mushrooms for soup before. She hadn’t done it on her own before. Normally it was added to a can of Campbell’s condensed soup.” They began feeling ill the following morning

and were forced to spend the night in separate bathrooms, suffering vomiting and diarrhoea. They rang an out-ofhours doctor in the morning, complaining of having “eaten some

dodgy mushrooms”. That evening, Mrs Hale was rushed to Musgrove Park Hospital by ambulance, where her heart stopped at least four times and her kidney and liver failed. She died in intensive care the following day, but the coroner was satisfied the delay in receiving treatment had not reduced her chance of recovering. Michael Rose, from West Somerset Coroner’s Court, said: “Half a mushroom has been known to kill people. “The assault that had been made from the toxins into the body of Christina was too great to survive.” He recorded a verdict of death by misadventure.

£54 ice creams take some licking FOUR British tourists sparked an official investigation after complaining about being ripped off for four ice creams in Italy.

Roger and Steve Bannister were with their wives, Wendy and Joyce, in Rome when they stopped to buy four cones at an icecream parlour. They were astonished to discover they had been charged 64 euros (£54) and complained to a passing councillor, who had overheard them discussing the price. He, in turn, passed on their complaint to consumer group Codacons, whose president, Carlo Rienzi said: “This is a scandal which not only affects the tourist industry but the image of the city. “We have lodged an official complaint, asking for an immediate

investigation. We would advise other tourists or Italians who feel they have been ripped off to contact us.’” Rome, aware that British tourists are usually too embarrassed to complain, is renowned for its rip-off taxi drivers, bars and cafes. But tourist chiefs were suitably embarrassed about this particular rip-off after it had been highlighted by the local media. Roger and his party had stopped at the Antica Roma ice-cream parlour and bar in the city centre and ordered four cornets. Mr Bannister, a company executive from Dudley, in the West Midlands, said: “They didn’t even say thank-you when we paid. I’m not surprised. How can they

10th May - 16th May 2013

get away with charging £54 for four ice-cream cones? “The cones had three flavours and a couple of wafers, but if we wanted whipped cream, that was another three euros

each on top. The party were on the final day of their week-long holiday to Rome when the incident happened. Mr Bannister added: “How can they get away with charging that

much? It’s left a really bad taste to what was up until then a lovely holiday.” Councillor Costantini said: “They were justifiably outraged at what they had been asked to

pay. It’s scandalous and should not be allowed to happen. “This is not the first time tourists have been caught out like this and, sadly, it won’t be the last. There needs to be a clamp-down on places that charge extortionate prices to unsuspecting tourists.” But a member of staff at the Antica Roma said: “The prices are clearly on display. They got what they asked for - four ice creams. “It’s not even our cheapest cone - our most expensive is 25 euros, but they could have picked a smaller one for two or three euros. “They got 16 eurosworth of ice cream each - almost a kilo. What more did they want?” She added: “We get this all the time - we had a similar incident last week with a group of Spanish tourists, but the prices are there in black and white. “If they don’t want the ice cream, they can go somewhere else.”

Poverty-stricken Britain just can't afford to get food ONE in five British households is borrowing money from somewhere to pay for food, such is the state of the nation’s poverty.

Walking back to healthiness DESPITE a recent survey which revealed that walking is every bit as good for your health as jogging, just 25% of adults walk for no more than an hour each week.

This was made clear in a YouGov survey for the Ramblers - a walking charity - which polled 2,000 adults across Britain about walking habits. It also found that another 43% reported walking for less than two hours a week. Government guidelines suggest people should do 150 minutes of “moderate” physical activity each week. The survey asked people about the total amount of walking they did, including trips to school, work or the shops. The Ramblers, currently promoting a “Get Walking Week” which finishes tomorrow (Saturday), said research already showed that two-thirds of adults in the UK do too little exercise. And the current survey backed that up. The West Midlands was revealed as the worst region for weekly walking, with 34% of adults walking for no more than an hour a week. The East Midlands came out top, with 59% of people doing enough to satisfy recommended, physical-activity guidelines. Despite the low levels of walking reported,

Page 16

93% of all those surveyed agreed that walking was a good form of exercise. The Ramblers charity, which promotes walking for health and pleasure, wants to get people to go on walks of five miles or less, and offers free walks led by guides. Benedict Southworth, chief executive of the Ramblers, said: “We want people all over Britain to join the walking revolution and take their first steps towards a healthier and happier lifestyle. “Walking is one of the most accessible and achievable ways to truly conquer this inactivity pandemic in Britain, and we need to get started now.” Anna Soubry, the Government’s Public Health Minister, who supports the initiative, said walking was “one of the best ways to keep healthy”. The British Heart Foundation (BHF) advises that moderateintensity aerobic activity is the most effective type of activity for maintaining a healthy heart. Aerobic activity is a repetitive, rhythmic exercise involving large muscle groups such as legs, shoulders and arms. Moderate intensity activities should make people feel warmer, breathe harder and make their heart beat faster than usual. But, they should still be able to have a conversation. The BHF also advises 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week.

In all, five million families are approaching financial “breaking point”, according to research carried out by consumer group Which? They say their monthly incomes would not stretch to cover all the food costs last month, and some were forced to use credit cards, overdrafts loans - or even their savings. Around 2,000 people across the UK took part in the survey, which was carried out last month. Which? said that it equates to five million families if the findings were projected across the UK. The findings provide an indication of the numbers of people who are struggling, despite official figures showing last week that personal insolvencies have fallen to their lowest level in five years. Those who could not cover their food bills from income alone came mainly from low-income

households earning less than £21,000 a year. And those aged 30-49 felt the squeeze most. Some 82% of these people said that they were worried about food prices, while 57% were finding it “difficult to cope” living on their current income. People in this group were also more likely to be worried about their level of debt, and 74% of them described economy as “poor”. Which? executive director Richard Lloyd

said: “Our tracker shows that many households are stretched to their financial breaking point, with rising food prices one of the top worries for squeezed consumers. “It’s simply shocking that so many people need to savings or credit to pay for essentials like food.” The study also found that only 25% of people said they were living comfortably on their incomes, while 36% felt squeezed. Two-thirds

were worried about the effects of low interest rates on their savings - despìte insolvency experts crediting low interest rates with helping people’s borrowing costs and keeping personal insolvencies down. And 31% of those surveyed cut back spending on essentials last month, mainly those women aged 3049. Some 68% described the state of the economy as poor, with just 9% saying it was good.

Who’ll buy island of dreams? FOR SALE: flourishing, 800-acre tourist island with bird colonies, a post office and three jetties – and all for just £2.5m! Tanera Mor, 1.5 miles off north-west Scotland, is the only inhabited island in the Summer Isles archipelago. The family-run island is being sold by Lizzie and Richard Williams, who took it on from her family, the Wilders. They bought it in 1996 after raising the financing by selling their Wiltshire dairy farm. Now, though, Lizzie feels it is right to pass it on to another family. “After many happy years of calling Tanera home, it is time for someone else to have the privilege of

looking after this amazing place,” she added. Talks with the local community over a buy-out ended when Coigach Community Development Company decided not to splash out, so it has now been put on the open market. Estate agent CKD Galbraith is now han-

dling the sale, describing Tanera Mor as a “flourishing tourist enterprise and superb family residence”, with a guide price of £2.5m. It has nine residential properties, a cafe, post office and three jetties. John Bound, of CKD Galbraith, said: “The chance to own your own Scottish island is

extremely rare. “And with Tanera Mor’s thriving tourist enterprise, coupled with being a truly spectacular place to live, we expect to receive a lot of interest on the open market. “With ongoing support and commitment from the local Coigach community, it offers a truly fantastic prospect for interested parties, who will very much have the island’s heritage and sustainability at heart, as well as a fantastic lifestyle.” The island inspired the book Island Farm by Frank Fraser Darling, who lived on Tanera Mor in the late 1930s and studied the habitat of its bird colonies.

Fair play is the Másmóvil key to customer surge MÁSMÓVIL, the ever-popular mobile phone operator, has recently seen an increase in new clients, and it is not surprising.

Besides the obvious reasons for people to switch, such as cheaper rates and customer service in their own language, be it English, German, Scandinavian, Russian or Spanish, people have moved to MÁSMÓVIL after becoming dissatisfied with their current operators, many of whom do not “speak your language”! According to the Accenture Global Consumer’s annual survey, one in every four consumers changed mobile phone operator in 2012, with two out of every three saying they would

have continued with the same operator, had its customer-service department resolved their problem and shown greater interest in doing so. More than one-third of complaints made to the Federation of Consumers’ Associations, were because of a lack of truthfulness in the offers they had received from their providers, as well as threats for cancelling contracts, and money taken for calls not made. With MÁSMÓVIL, you are free to leave whenever you want because the company does not believe in permanence clauses or penalty fees. It advocates transparency and wants all its customers to know what rates and services best suit their needs, so they don’t overpay. In addition, you may log on to your personal

10th May - 16th May 2013

Internet account at any time for an overview of costs, balance and dialled numbers. According to Netquest, MÁSMÓVIL has a significant level of satisfaction, with over 90% of its customers willing to recommend the provider to friends and family. No wonder MÁSMÓVIL has been awarded the Ruban D’Honneur Status in the Customer Focus Category of the European Business Awards. What’s more, independent experts have elected MÁSMÓVIL as the least-expensive operator in Spain, with estimated savings of up to 50%, compared with other operators. Over 115.000 satisfied clients can’t be wrong. Phone toll-free number 1473 or visit www.masmovil.es for the name of your nearest agent.

Puppies find Germany homes OUR next fundraising event at the refuge will take place on Sunday, 2nd June, with all sorts of fun and games for the family. As usual, the refuge animals will have their share of fun, and there will be our popular dogagility competition,

BBQ, horse-riding, music, games, and swimming for the children - so don’t forget their swimwear! If anyone would like to help out by donating prizes or, maybe, having a stall and donating a percentage of takings for the dogs, or perhaps a few entertainers willing to offer their services, then call Marion on 922 778 630 for more information.

Accion del Sol news As usual, all proceeds will go towards the upkeep and care of the Accion dogs. Two Guaza puppies, along with two other dogs from the refuge, were flown to Germany last week to start their new lives, but there are still lots of other puppies all in need of loving homes. This week

we have Reny, a female cross aged nine months, who would love a home with a garden to play in, or someone who has the time to take her for lots of walks. We also have a Sharpei dog available, and both animals, despite a bad start to life, are very loving and would make excellent pets. A few of our

new supporters have volunteered to walk the refuge dogs on a regular basis, and if you would like to help out in this or any other way, just go to the refuge, which is open from Monday-Friday, between 3-6pm, or call 922 778 630 for more information. The refuge is situated at the Granadilla Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to the ecological

park ITER, by the windmills. Marion, in charge of affairs there, spends a lot of her time trying to find loving homes for the many dogs under her control. We desperately need towels, blankets and tinned dog food for the puppies and sick dogs, and if you would like to help this worthwhile cause, all donations will be gratefully received.

Make sure they’re chipped Live Arico news

WE have recently returned a couple of lost dogs who were not chipped to their owners. Posters were put all over and eventually achieved their aim. But how much easier it would have been had the dog been chipped. Worse still, dogs can wind up in refuges unclaimed if their owners do know where to look. Micro-chipping, and rabies vaccinations are legal requirements, yet far too many people ignore this. Adopt a dog This week’s featured dog is Chocco, a 14-week-old pup, who will be medium-sized when fully grown. He is fully vaccinated and chipped, and is very playful. A 110-euro adoption fee will be payable at Hospivet Sur, to cover the cost of the vaccinations, his sterilisation in July, and the changing of the microchip details into your name. From this week, our

Page 18

adoption fees have been standardised, and are 110 euros for a male dog and 140 euros for a female, to include vaccinations, chip, and sterilisation. It’s the only way ahead. Call Sue on 629 388 102 for more information about our dogs for adoption. Pool and darts events We are staging our first Pool and Darts knockout competition on Sunday, 26th May, at the Terrace Bar, Amarilla Golf. Registrations will take place from 12 noon, or you can pre-register by calling Sharon Edens on 671 783 117. So polish off your cue, sharpen your darts

and come down for an afternoon of fun. It’s just five euros an entry for each event, with the winners and runner-ups receiving cash prizes. Bargains galore Come and browse in our charity shops at Los Cristianos, Calle Reveron, near the children’s playpark, open between 10am4pm daily. Alternatively, have a look at Siobhan’s shop in San Eugenio, near Amandas Bar and opposite Hotel La Nina. Both shops are closed Sundays. You will be surprised at the high-quality goods available at knockdown prices.

Domestic trippers bolster Britain's caravan industry BRITAIN’S caravan and camping industry cashing in as more and more hard-up Brits take domestic holidays to keep costs down.

There was a 14% increase in the number of advanced bookings in January, compared with the same time last year, according to the Camping and Caravanning Club. Unsurprisingly, this sector is now contributing nearly £6m to the UK economy. Those in the industry say that it is important for them to attract the right candidates with the appropriate skills to manage the expansion. And, with unemployed youngsters crying out for jobs, more and more of them are being urged

to study tourism park management. A spokesperson for the National Caravan Council (NCC) said: “The caravan and camping sector has seen a rise in the number of people holidaying in the UK. “This is creating opportunities to allow its employers to capitalise on growth. Staycations, popularised by cashstrapped Brits holidaying at home, have driven growth, as well as the growing ‘glamping’ (comfort camping) trend.” The NCC figures show that 1.5 million people take tourism caravan or motorhome holidays regularly. There are 510,000 touring caravans, 305,000 caravan holiday homes and 142,000 motorhomes in the UK, which adds up to big business.

Liquid ban? No end in sight yet!

The UK press have been raising our hopes saying that the ban on air-passengers taking liquids on planes could be lifted; indeed that date being bandied about was the end of April 2013.

The complete veto on carrying liquids in your hand-luggage came into effect back in August 2006 after a terrorist plot to down transatlantic aircraft. Canarian Weekly this week spoke with ABTA, the UK’s leading travel association, their spokesman told Canarian Weekly, “There were scanners planned to be installed at every airport in Britain and

across the EU by the end of April 2013. There has been talk for a while of the EU lifting restrictions, however as of today it’s not happened and the ban remains fully in place. Even if the EU lifted restrictions in the future the British Government may keep the ban in place.” The ban has now been in place for nearly 7 years, but travellers still forget to decant their

expensive toiletries. According to Stansted Airport its security staff confiscates enough liquids to fill 20 household waste bins per day. Passengers have surrendered bottles containing anything from Marmite to expensive vintage champagne; it was previously estimated that the value of liquids confiscated at UK airports totals £10 million a day.

The series focuses on the lives of a group of people who are either in long-term unemployment, have never worked, or are growing up without any expectation of working. With access over nine months in Scunthorpe, Skint follows a father and stepfather of nine, who used to work at the steelworks, and his friends and neighbours, many of whom live on an estate in one of the most deprived areas of the town. At its height the steelworks employed 27,000 people. It now employs a sixth of that number.

They received a ÂŁ100,000 government grant to help Margate's high street, which has suffered terribly in recent years with one in four shops closing down. However, it's not all doom and gloom. The ÂŁ17 million Turner Gallery has been a roaring success, attracting up to 10,000 visitors a week. Mary believes there might be an opportunity to capitalise on this existing footfall, if only visitors could be encouraged up the high street. Despite some local resistance, she comes up with the idea of an inland pier, bringing the traditional attractions of a pleasure pier into the heart of the high street.

Desserts. Cookery series in which some of the country's best amateur bakers test their skills. All the challenges are devised by cookery writer and baker Mary Berry and master baker Paul Hollywood, who are also on hand to judge and taste the contestants' efforts. The bakers face three challenges, all designed for a sweet tooth. Starting off with a tempting array of decadently rich tortes, the bakers then face the technical challenge. This time it is a mainstay of French baking, the creme caramel, and for some there is more wobble than expected. Proceedings are rounded off with a mammoth six-hour challenge to produce a mighty showstopping layered meringue. But who will claim the accolade of Star Baker and who will hang up their apron for the last time? Presented by Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins.

With Cathy Clarke. Presenter Tim Wonnacott visits one of the most poignant museums in Britain - the Foundling Museum. This fascinating centre in London is on the site of a now-demolished hospital which cared for abandoned babies and children. Many of those left on its doorstep had with them tokens from their mothers, forced to give up their children due to poverty or the stigma of illegitimacy. Three of the UK's most renowned chefs are going back to catering college. Tom Kitchin, Theo Randall and Michel Roux Jr are each looking for a young student to take under their wing. Michelin-starred chef Tom Kitchin continues his search. In his last day at Perth College in Scotland where he himself trained, Tom puts his five chosen students through their paces as he decides who will continue under his tutelage. Tom's own mentor was world famous chef Pierre Koffmann who taught him that a protege not only needs skill but the ability to take on board what the mentor is trying to teach. With this in mind Tom asks the hopeful students to cook their favourite dish before suggesting how he would improve them. Showing that flavour and seasoning can make the difference between good and outstanding food and why too many ingredients can over complicate a dish, Tom gives the young chefs food for thought.

They are told he has moved out - but is it the truth? And the Sheriffs revisit a garage which sold a customer's car but didn't give him the money. America and Its Guns. The Sandy Hook massacre is now recognised as the most notorious and shocking mass shooting in the USA. Twenty children were killed in cold blood alongside their teachers, in a place that should have meant care and safety, not death and fear. Three months on, and despite grieving parents and presidential promises, it is unlikely that much will be done to change the gun laws. ITV News Washington correspondent Robert Moore travels across the States, examining the attachment between Americans and their firearms. He talks to gun owners about why they have guns - and why they would never give them up. He meets families who have suffered the consequences of a society where ownership of these weapons is so ingrained, and in an extraordinary interview, he meets a father whose son accidentally shot his little sister.

By Jamie Drew OVER the last six or seven years, the way in which artistes promote themselves has changed dramatically.

This is significant, with the monstrous rise in popularity of the big online social networks, Twitter and Facebook. The latter seems to have taken take the lead but, of late, Twitter is rising. Although it has always been seen as a tool used by celebrities and mainstream artistes to get their own views out there and promote their work, more and more performers are now opening Twitter accounts. They are using both social networks for the purposes of work, as well as social networking. To someone who has never even used email - and, believe it or not, some people haven’t - it can be rather daunting. For performing ar-

tistes on a circuit like ours in Tenerife, it is so important to get up to speed with computers, and the way they connect with the virtual world online. I was talking with Steve, one of the partners at Dreamers bar in Los Cristianos on Monday about this subject, and

Moni Tivony, the #Jewmaican A FEW weeks ago, in The Dubliner bar, I bumped into Karen Holcombe, VIP manager at Papagayo Beach, who introduced me to Moni Tivony. He was up singing with Paul and the two Dans and wow, has this guy got some pipes! I wasn’t surprised to hear that he had auditioned for BBC’s The Voice, and his episode was set to be televised. So over the last few weeks, I have been waiting to see if any chairs would turn for him. All contestants on The Voice are under strict instructions not to give away any information about the recorded shows and, as much as I tried, he wouldn’t tell me what to expect. Moni, who has been nicknamed the “Jewmaican” by his pals, has been around the UK scene for a long time and is no stranger to TV

talent shows. In 2008, you may recall seeing a show called The One And Only. It featured singers copying their favourite artist. In Moni’s case, this was Lionel Ritchie, and he made it through to the final stages. His episode of The Voice aired on Saturday and he sang Bob Marley’s No Woman No Cry. It didn’t take long before Will I Am was muttering “Dope” to himself. All four judges turned for him, and rightly so. Tenerife wishes Moni all the best on the show and for the future. you can follow him on Twitter. @MoniTivony.

he confirmed that the first place he goes to if he needs an entertainer is Facebook. There are pages which can be subscribed to, like “Tenerife Entertainers Available Tonight”, which have almost 1,000 users. That is Steve’s first port of call and, 99% of I DECIDED to visit Los Cristianos on Monday night, intending to get around to at least five bars, I managed just two because the entertainment held my attention and, before I realised, it was after midnight. First was Dreamers to see compere Angie Minty. She’s been on the Island for around five years and has worked at Dreamers now for two. Angie is so qualified to entertain audiences over here. She has been coming to Tenerife since she was a little girl with her family, and I remember her 13 years ago in The Blaydon Races, singing on karaoke with her sister Michelle, who is also a Tenerife entertainer now. Angie has a lovely manner with her guests and has a huge repertoire of songs, taking requests from audiences early doors as she builds them up for Showtime

the time, he will find just what he’s after within minutes. Imagine how long it would take to go through a contacts book, make the calls until you would find somebody who is free. Not to mention the cost of the calls! It costs next to noth-

ing to be online for the short time it takes to send a private message (PM) to the artiste, who has already stated he/ she is available. “Can you do 11pm at my place tonight” … “Yes” … “Brilliant, see you there.” Job done, work gained! Those who haven’t yet got to grips with this need to, and quickly. That PM could have been your gig, which might have become a regular spot in that venue. If that were the case, just a few clicks and a few minutes online could, potentially, have been worth over 3,000 euros a year. So if you are an entertainer and you’re not in the loop, you will be passed over. Having said all that, these networks also enable the wannabes to talk a good show online, publishing posters and flyers for shows which will only ever go out once, if at all. The power of “word of mouth” is prominent

on this circuit. If you’ve had a bad show and you are not really a pro entertainer, word will soon get around, and you’ll find that your No.1 tribute show or variety act will be finished before it has even started. Just imagine how embarrassing it must be to have a show you have spent so much time preparing and publicising online, and never see the fruits of your efforts. Last year’s Tenerife Entertainment Awards produced exactly that. A show was nominated which wasn’t even working on the circuit. Why? Because nominations and votes were gained through Facebook from people who, probably, just like the individual as a person and have never even seen him/her on stage. But that is another subject I will touch on later in the year and nearer to the 2013 TEAs. Good luck to all performing artistes this year, and happy networking.

Out and about in downtown Los Cris

at 11pm. I arrived at around 9.30pm and, already, she had a good-size crowd in the bar, all fully engaged with her singing and personality. She is so natural on stage that it’s as though it were her house and we were all invited to the party. I felt comfortable straight away. The act on was none other than George King, an amazing comic who prides himself on never swearing and never being blue, yet delivering innuendo so often copied but never bettered. He is a regular act on cruise ships and often sails the seas on some of the biggest liners in the world, entertaining all nationalities. If you have seen

George, you will know all about “flavoured gardening gloves”. If you haven’t and you enjoy a good laugh, then go to Dreamers, in the centre of Los Cris, to find out what it’s all about. George is on every Monday at 11pm. Find Russ, their friendly PR, who will usher you in and even organise a free shot for you. Next stop was The Thistle & Dragon, just around the corner. Matt Brooks was already in full voice by the time I arrived, and the only seat free was a bar stool at the back. I quickly occupied it as the Mister Sister show, an award-winning, slick, class act, was about to start. Within 15 minutes,

there must have been at least five costume changes, and they were almost seamless, as if there were two of them. In fact, there are two people involved in this show: Shane, the performing artiste and Fabio, who makes all the Fabio-lous costumes and assists Shane in the multiple, quick changes. Mister Sister is definitely a must-see variety show with originality, plenty of laughs, audience participation and even a brilliant fireeating routine. If you would like to watch it at the Thistle & Dragon, you really do need to be in there early - or otherwise, you will be sitting on that bar stool.

B&Q’S EXCLUSIVE CHELSEA LILY FOR CENTENARY GARDEN To celebrate the launch of The B&Q Sentebale Forget-Me-Not Garden at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, B&Q is unveiling the arrival of a brand new species of Lily to the UK, as part of its Chelsea Collection. The collection of flowers and plants from B&Q aim to help customers re-create Chelsea at home and the limited edition exclusive Chelsea Lily will be the first of its kind in the UK. The new species is whiter than other Lilies and has been developed to grow bigger flower heads and will retail at £10. Available from the 13th May in B&Q stores across the UK, excluding N.Ireland, the flower makes up one of six plants that are either featured or inspired by the garden and available to customers. As well as being able to create a piece of Chelsea at home, customers will also be contributing to Prince Harry’s charity, Sentebale, which was set up by the Prince in 2006 in memory of his mother and the Prince Seeiso of Lesotho’s mother, Queen Mamohato

Bereng Seeiso. B&Q has partnered with the charity for the 100th RHS Chelsea Flower Show to help raise awareness of the charity and 20 per cent of each sale will go to the charity, whose aim is to help needy and vulnerable children in Lesotho, many of whom are victims of extreme

poverty and Lesotho’s HIV/AIDs epidemic. . The Chelsea Collection has been created to illustrate the inspiration behind the garden and charity, and is also made up of: Forget Me Not Tri Pack, £5- A mixture of Silvia pink, white and blue Forget Me Nots. As the

focal plant of the charity, Sentebale means ‘forget me not’ in Lesotho, these flowers are key to the garden. Chelsea Garden Collection, £25A selection of Achilleas Salvias, Iris and Forget me not’s, Specifically selected plants from the garden that will thrive in

gardens across the UK. Diana Princess of Wales Rose, £10 – Named after Prince Harry’s mother and the inspiration behind the charity, the traditional rose is cream. Princes Rose, £12- A traditional pink rose which was chosen to highlight the Royal con-

nection to the garden. Two Princes Standard Rose, £25- The double standard rose is created from two different coloured and variety of roses, which is grafted into one. This rose is inspired by the charity’s two founding princes, Prince Harry and the Prince of Lesotho.

19.2 million Brits scared of DIY NEW research from B&Q unveils that DIY is being avoided by over 19 million UK adults because they are concerned they cannot deliver a quality finish. However, despite a lack in confidence, 45 per cent of Brits still repainted some rooms, plus did all the little DIY jobs which have been waiting. In the UK, last bankholiday weekend saw 43 per cent of DIY happy Scots and South Easterners painting, whilst getting to grips with the garden was

top of the list for those in the North East, Wales, South East and East Anglia. In general, a quarter of Brits plan on doing more DIY this year. It seems the state of the nation’s ‘unloved rooms’ can lead to quarrels. More than 15million arguments between couples are sparked off by unfinished jobs or because of an unloved room in the home. state of their homes and unloved rooms. 31 per cent of females vs 24 per cent of males unashamedly admit to this. But, the good news is, the older we get, the less likely we are to argue about home improvements. 77 per cent of couples polled aged over-55 are prepared to let things go, compared to 69 per cent aged between 3544. Couples in the East Midlands will have the least disagreements about their ‘unloved rooms’, closely

followed by the North West (23%) and then Scotland (25%). Kirstie Allsopp TV presenter and B&Q Ambassador says: “My tips for a harmonious DIY include making sure your ‘man drawer’ is up to date, stocked with bulbs and fuses, screwdrivers and screws, Sellotape and scissors, all the handy things we always look for and can never find! Pick your moments, agree on a project and make sure you complete the project

as a couple. The purpose of decorating is to enhance a relationship, as well as the home.” As well as expert advice from the You Can Do It Crew, B&Q has trained to date 64,000 people through its in store workshops, at its You Can Do It Centres. Rockeries on fringe of the big-time again

YOUR garden wasn’t worth a second glance without a rockery in the Seventies, such was its popularity then.

But by the end of the century, this particular feature had become naff, with stones and dainty alpines replaced by decking, olive trees and bamboo. But times have changed. Gardens have become smaller and pockets less deep, which is adding up to a revival of the rock garden. Next month’s Chelsea Fringe festival will have a rockery display as the centrepiece of one of its gardens. And just to stress the point, membership of the Alpine Garden Society, which is a genuine haven for rockeryplant aficianados, is on

the up. Rockeries have even been endorsed by Gardeners’ World, with Monty Don creating a miniature alpine garden on last week’s show. John Fitzpatrick, editor of The Alpine Gardener, the journal of the Alpine Garden Society, said the decreasing size of the average garden

had led to a renewed interest in low-growing plants, such as thrift, saxifrages, sedums and dwarf narcissi. “More people live in flats nowadays and have only limited outside space,” he said. “So people are going for smaller plants, and Alpines fit the bill for that.”

Mr Fitzpatrick added that crevice gardens, an updated version of the rockery in which rocks are placed on their ends and packed together tightly, with flowers placed in the tiny gaps, mimicking an alpine slope, are becoming increasingly popular in public gardens.

Even the Royal Horticultural Society’s Wisley home, and Ragley Hall in Warwickshire, are indulging in them. Another reason for the rock garden’s return is the declining interest in Mediterranean plants, such as olive trees and oleander. That’s because the hotter summers predicted through climate change have, instead, been cold and wet. Mr Fitzpatrick said alpine plants, although originating in dry, windy mountainsides, can thrive in a wet climate as long as they are on free-draining soil. He added that the Alpine Garden Society membership stands at around 7,000 - and rising! Rock gardens have not featured at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show since the Seventies,

having fallen out of fashion at the world’s largest horticultural event long before they faded from most domestic homes. But at the Chelsea Fringe, the grassroots, independent alternative to the Chelsea Flower Show, there are signs of a comeback. The Chelsea Fringe rock garden has been created by Ian Drummond, of Indoor Garden Design, and will be on show at the Goldsmiths’ Centre in central London from 21st May until 5th July. There will also be a mini rock garden design competition for children, using mirrored trays, which is yet another Seventies’ craze. The Chelsea Fringe runs from 18th May to 9th June across London, and at various UK venues.

Jacaranda’s jolly purple haze! ONE of the more popular trees that flourish in low-frost and frost-free climates is the Blue Jacaranda. And it positively loves the Tenerife climate, as you can see from the pictures. The Jacaranda, or Jacaranda mimosifolia, is a highly-decorative tree, featuring delicate, fern-like foliage and big panicles of brightpurple, long-lasting flowers, which can hang in bright bunches. It blooms on branches with minimal growth before the new spring foliage buds out, so the trees look as though they are straight out of a fairytale in the springtime. The Jacaranda is semideciduous. It thins but doesn’t usually shed all its leaves in winter - unless the weather drops down to freezing repeatedly. It is native to Brazil and Bolivia and will handle frosty temperatures down to 20-25’F once established. But don’t

10th May - 16th May 2013

take any chances when it’s young because it will not survive much frost then. This attractive tree, which is grown in gardens all around the world, can reach 15-40ft tall and is ideal for this island because it likes lots of sun and doesn’t mind hot temperatures. It prefers a welldrained, sandy soil and doesn’t take to windy conditions. But it handles low rainfall and dry air, making it a good choice for a droughttolerant landscape. And if it’s really content with its location, it can form a truly spectacular sight. But the Jacaranda is not a great tree to grow if cars are likely park beneath, since the flowers drop heavily and are sticky. Large seed pods also form and will eventually drop, making more mess. So do grow the Jacaranda where its showy, purple flowers can be seen easily, and where falling debris will

not be a problem. It is probably one of the most stunning trees you can have in the garden when it is in flower, and its feathery leaves make it an asset to the landscape all year round. Apart from being popular in some American states, it can be seen in nearly every part of Europe and is regarded as a pest species in Australia and South Africa. The Jacaranda has another asset, aside from its beauty, because the wood of the plant may have medicinal value. Water, laced with extract from the wood, may help resist infections caused by agents such as Staphylococcus aureus. The wood is also relatively anti-microbial, showing resistance to bacteria like Bacillus cereus and the infamous E. coli. The Jacaranda is a staple in world cultures and is typically associated with the

Christmas holiday Down Under because of its tendency to bloom in the summer (in the southern hemisphere, December is summertime). Pretoria, the capital of South Africa, is also known as Jacaranda City because of the abundance of trees flowering in the spring there. So, if you fancy brightening up your garden, choose a location which has rich, fertile soil and good drainage, with full sun for most of the day. Dig a hole at least six inches wider than the root-ball of the tree. It will need to be deep enough to hold the entire root-ball without burying any of the trunk. Cut away or remove the wrap or container surrounding the rootball, being careful to avoid damaging the roots. Place the tree in the middle of the hole, and position it so that there is space on all sides for the roots to spread.

proper copper By Carl from Robot

Concern is growing for disabled US youngsters

HAIR is like fashion - it never stands still, and things come around again and again.

This season sees a return of copper, an old favourite colour of mine which suits most people, in one form or another. From copper-blonde to vibrant-orange, these colours are big this season. Okay, as with fashion, not all of you will want to go for this colour, but those who are brave enough to try something new will love this shade. It’s easier to make someone have red than orange as the latter tends to clash with make-up and wardrobe if you’re not careful. A lot of people tend to think of this shade as

Page 40

IN the past 10 years, the number of American children classed as disabled has shot up by 16%.

something outlandish, but just putting a hint into a basic brown can really make a difference. Just that hint of copper can warm up a shade, or you can go the whole way and try a fiery tone. There are so many ways to try this shade without going overboard. For example, try mixing in some pale

copper with a blonde hi-light. The effect is so natural and gives a more dimensional look to the colour. Copper shades can be pastel and subtle; they can have a reddy undertone or even full-on orange. They tend to suit clients with paler skin because the darker skin tones can look a little drawn with this shade If you have green or blue eyes, this colour can be ideal for you. But when going for it, remember that here in Tenerife, we have an “enemy” in our blazing sun when using hair colours, especially the more intense shades. These need extra protection, as I’m sure you will know from me going on about it before. Ask your stylist to show you the possibilities of adding a copper touch to your hair - just to try something different. You never know…

Curiously, researchers found that while figures for those with physical disabilities had gone down, mentally-disability cases soared. They also found that the greatest increase was among youngsters from higher-income families. A new study, carried out by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, says one possible reason for the trend is the rise in of autism cases diagnosed. Lead author Doctor Amy Houtrow, the university’s associate professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation and paediatrics, said: “Nearly six million kids had a disability in 2010, which was almost one million more than in 2001.” She said previous studies indicated that the prevalence of childhood disability was increasing. Doctor Houtrow and her colleagues now want to take a closer look at the conditions and socio-demographic factors associated with disabilities.

They analysed data from the National Health Interview Survey, conducted by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in 2001-2002, and survey data from 2009-2010. A total of 102,468 parents of children aged up to 17 participated in the surveys. Parents were asked whether their child had any limitations in play or activity, received special education services, needed help with personal care, had difficulty walking without equipment, had difficulty with memory, or had any other limitations. Scientists have attributed some of this rise to an increased diagnosis of autism, a condition that makes it difficult for a person to interact with their surroundings If the parents answered Yes to any of those questions, they were asked whether their child’s limitations were because of a vision or hearing problem; asthma or breathing problem; joint, bone or muscle problem; intellectual deficit or mental retardation; emotional or behaviour problems; epilepsy; learning disability; speech problems; attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder; birth defect; injury or other developmental problem. Researchers clas-

sified conditions into three groups: physical, neuro-developmental/ mental health, plus any others. While neuro-developmental and mental health-related disabilities increased, those down to physical conditions decreased. The trend was most notable among children under six years, whose rate of neurodevelopmental disabilities nearly doubled over the study period, from 19 cases to 36 cases per 1,000. Doctor Houtrow said: “The survey did not name autism, but we suspect that some of the increase in neurodevelopmental disabilities is through the rising incidence or recognition of autism spectrum disorders.” The figures also showed that children living in poverty experienced the highest rates of disability at both time periods, but not the highest growth. The doctor added: “We are worried that those living in poverty may be having problems with being diagnosed and getting services.” The findings were presented at this week’s annual meeting of the Paediatric Academic Societies in Washington DC.

Fat chance for tubby brigade tary service. All potential conscripts in Denmark are subjected to a battery of psychological and physical tests, including weight. Over 80% were within the normal range, and 5% were underweight. One in 10 was overweight and just over 1%, equating to 97 men, were obese. Normal weight is classified as a body mass index (BMI) of between 18.5 and 25; obesity is classified as a BMI of 30 or more. Almost half of those classified as obese at the age of 22 were diagnosed with diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, blood clots in the legs or lungs, or had died before reaching 55. They were eight times more likely to get diabetes than their normal-weight peers, and four times as likely to get a potentially-fatal blood clot. The study determined that youth provides no protection against the dangers of carrying excess weight They were also more than twice as likely to develop high blood pressure, have had a heart attack, or even died. Every unit increase in BMI corresponded to an increased heart-attack rate of 5%, high blood pressure and blood-clot rates of 10%, and an increased diabetes rate of 20%. In total, obese young men were three times as likely to get any of these serious conditions as their normal weight peers by middle age, conferring an absolute risk of almost 50% compared with only 20% among their normalweight peers. The findings, published in the BMJ, have prompted researchers to warn that the continuing rise in obesity may counteract the fall in deaths from heart disease. They said: “Obesityrelated morbidity and mortality will, in decades to come, place an unprecedented burden on healthcare systems worldwide.

They are also up to eight times more likely to suffer diabetes, potentially fatal blood clots or a heart attack. It is well known that obesity in adulthood poses a risk for diabetes and cardiovascular disease. But until a new study published in the BMJ confirmed it, the issue about whether obesity in early adulthood strengthened that risk was cloudy. Danish researchers tracked the health of 6,500 Danish men, aged 22, for 33 years. They were all born in 1955 and had registered with the Military Board for a fitness test to gauge their suitability for mili-

Food news TWO of the UK’s best-known foodies have taken on their biggest taste test to date after being appointed as the official taste buds of Heathrow.

John Torode and Gregg Wallace were tasked with eating their way around the UK’s only hub airport in 80 plates and to set Heathrow a six-month challenge to improve the airport dining experience. The dynamic duo – famous for their straighttalking approach to all things culinary – were given access to all areas of the airport to sip, sample and savour dishes from Heathrow’s 73 restaurants and bars to better understand and improve the airport offering. Following their gastronomic tour, John and Gregg have tasked Heathrow’s food and beverage team with introducing healthier food choices across the terminals and creating a platform to champion British culinary talent. John and Gregg’s experiences are also being used to inform Heathrow’s first-ever food guide. Entitled Food on the Fly, the guide will provide passengers with an overview of the varied dining options available in the airport. Every year 26 million orders are placed at Heathrow’s restaurants and bars, which include fine dining options such as Caviar House and Prunier, Gordon Ramsay’s Plane Food, Oriel and rhubarb, as well as high street concepts redesigned specifically for travellers including YO! Sushi, Strada and Carluccio’s. Ben Crowley,

Head of Food and Beverage at Heathrow said: “Heathrow’s food and drink offering is designed specifically with travellers in mind – from people passing through several time zones in a very short space of time to those needing a meal in minutes.

“We’ve been recognised on a global level but for us this is not enough. We want to continue to innovate to be the best in our league for airport dining. We are hugely excited about responding to the challenge John and Gregg have set and at bring-

ing a new dimension to Heathrow food and beverage offering.” Gregg Wallace said: “Food is our first love and at the heart of everything we do; so we were delighted when we were invited to take part in this eating challenge – and to contrib-

ute to the guide. We were blown away by the range on offer to hungry passengers at Heathrow; catering for such a huge spectrum of passengers is truly a herculean task.” 10,000 copies of Food on the Fly – Heathrow’s first-ever food guide –

will be published and handed out to passengers to mark the summer getaway with a digital version available to download from www. heathrow.com from July. Added Crowley: “It’s often hard to show passengers – especially those in a hurry – the full extent of our offering so it’s very exciting to be able to work with John and Gregg to produce this really comprehensive guide. We not only hope it will help passengers better navigate our restaurants and bars but also make the meal they have before they fly one to savour.” Heathrow food facts per annum: Breakfast is the most popular dish of the day at Heathrow 5 million eggs 6.4 million croissants 4.5 million rashers of bacon 1.5 tonnes of caviar 25,000 kilos of salmon 240,000 oysters 400,000 lemons 800,000 glasses of Champagne 250,000 pieces of sushi 630,000 portions of steak

El Corral del pollo de Adeje

It’s simply mouth-watering! IF you are looking for somewhere to dine out, with a price that suits your purse, plus excellent food and staff to match, then El Corral del Pollo de Adeje is the new place to be!

The restaurant has been open since 1st August only but, the owners are already enjoying full houses most days - whether it be lunch or dinner. And that alone tells you just how fabulous the food is! It is owned by Tayo and Lindi, daughter of Pedro and Angeles, who opened the Oasis Restaurant the original “chicken Shack” - in the old village of Adeje 50 years ago. That had a fantastic reputation, which speaks highly of this new venture because Tayo was the chef there, and he has now transferred his kitchen expertise to this new restaurant, The whole family have a part in taking care of you. They are extremely friendly and attentive -and their sole desire is to make your visit such a success that you will want to return. We went along this week because various friends of the office had recommended it, and it was a great surprise - what a lovely night it turned out to be1 You can sit inside or outside on the terrace, but our choice was

decided as the latter was full, and anyway, inside is air-conditioned. We were shown to our table by Lindi, whom I had met on a previous occasion with her husband Tayo. They are a lovely, friendly couple, and we could see right from our arrival that they were going to make our night out a success. Lindi immediately took our drinks order and my colleague decided to try a typical Canarian white wine. I, of course, had still water as I was driving. There is no menu as it’s a variation of chicken dishes, either spicy or non-spicy. First to arrive was the fresh bread and homemade garlic butter, which was really tasty! Then came the salad a fresh combination of home-grown tomatoes,

10th May - 16th May 2013

onions and lettuce. I’m not a huge salad lover, but it was so fresh, with crispy lettuce, that I thoroughly enjoyed it. Finally, last to arrive was the crème de la crème - the famous “Adeje Chicken”, accompanied by a separate plate of chips. We had decided to try both types of the chicken and … well words failed me as the secret was in the coating, and that alone was delicious a family recipe with mouth watering tender chicken, cooked to perfection! We managed to have a chat with Lindi and Tayo during the evening. They told us they felt that, having worked in the family restaurant most of their lives, it was time for them to carry on the family tradition but to break out on their own. Already, with the terrific support they have experienced from customers in these early days, they can see it was the right decision. After our abundance of chicken, we decided we couldn’t resist a dessert. There are two menus: special ice-creams and home-made ones. I had to go for the white chocolate mousse, which was very light and absolutely delicious. My colleague tried the cranberry cheesecake, which was home-made

and again delicious. We finished with a coffee and a coffee liquor, home-made by Tayo and again, from a secret family recipe! I would recommend El Corral del Pollo to

anyone as it represents great value for money, with a friendly atmosphere. And, most importantly, everything we ate was delicious. It is located in the Avenida de Los Oceanos

No 9, in the new part of Adeje but not far from the original village. To get there, take the original turn-off from the motorway and go up to the second roundabout, opposite the cemetery. Turn left and straight over and then, on the first junction, look to the right and there it is! The parking is excellent, which is important, and there’s a bus stop right over the road where two buses pass by regularly - the 417 Los Cristianos to Guia de Isora route and the 473, which runs from Los Cristianos to Los Gigantes - and they are available up to 11.30pm. So, if you don’t fancy taking the car in order to enjoy the local wine, you can hop on a bus. To make sure of getting a table, give Tayo or Lindi a call on 922 775 841. The restaurant is open seven days a week, from 12 noon till 10.30pm.

By Jav SKODA’S new Octavia Estate, set for the showrooms next month, really is a cut above its predecessor.

Not only does it now look and feel like a car from the family class rated ahead of it, but it also offers more interior space than any rival. The 1.6-litre TDI isn’t the best engine for keen drivers, but the superb efficiency and strong refinement mean it’s a solid, family choice. Also, the generous standard equipment and low running costs will make it hard to beat for private and company buyers alike. Skoda have decided that bigger is definitely better, so this latest Oc-

tavia Estate is the most spacious yet, with more room for luggage than the Audi A6 Avant. And as the outgoing

model was Europe’s best-selling estate car last year, the pressure is on this model to deliver. That shouldn’t be a

problem! Thanks to its clever MQB platform, Octavia dimensions have grown. It’s now 90mm longer and 45mm

One Million special cheers for Scirocco VOLKSWAGEN are celebrating one million sales of their long- standing Scirocco coupe with a high-spec, special- edition model.

Throughout three generations of the car, and almost 10 years, that sales figure has actually been surpassed. And to acknowledge this incredible feat, VW are celebrating the occasion with a specialedition version of the coupe. The Scirocco Million comes with a “Deep Black” metallic-paint finish - and a pair of thick, decorative stripes down the centre of the bonnet makes it instantly recognisable. It also boasts painted wing-mirrors and 18inch Interlagos alloy wheels, and even bigger 19-inch rims are

available as options. The new model also shares the same aggressive bumpers and side-skirts as the RLine models. The interior has been given an equally-sporty makeover, featuring standard, black leather upholstery, finished with contrasting orange stitching, which also covers the gearknob and handbrake. Stainless-steel pedals and special, Million-

10th May - 16th May 2013

badged scuff plates complete the cosmetic upgrades. The “special” Million can be ordered with any of the five-strong engine line-up, including three petrol TSI engines and two diesel versions. All except the entrylevel petrol can also be ordered with the optional seven-speed DSG auto-gearbox. The first two generations of Scirocco were

sold between 1974 and 1992, accounting for nearly 800,000 of the total sales figure. The special edition is on sale in Germany for the equivalent of £23,020 for the 1.2-litre TSI. There is no news yet about its availability throughout Europe, including the UK and Spain, although a company spokesman said a decision was being considered.

wider than before, and the wheelbase has stretched by 108mm. Yet the sharp, new styling ensures that it looks just as compact as the model it replaces. Smart, optional details like the silver roof rails (£120) and slender LED running lights serve to boost its desirability as well. The boot loading lip is now lower and wider than before, to help make loading larger items easier. And, with the rear seats folded, boot capacity is now a massive 1,740 litres (160 litres more than the hatch). Leave them in place, and it has a capacity of 610 litres. New handles in the boot make it even easier to flip the seatbacks down, andthe front passenger seat folds flat, so you can carry flatpack furniture measuring almost three metres long. But the Octavia caters just as well for people as luggage, with masses of head and legroom, while build quality inside takes a big step forward. The swept-back dash is smart and uncluttered, and major contact points, such as the steering wheel and gear lever, have a robust, classy feel. There are four engines to choose from at launch, but the ultraefficient 1.6-litre TDI is

set to be the top seller. It comes with a precise five-speed manual box and emits just 99g/km of CO2. Skoda claim 70mpgplus fuel economy, while an even cleaner GreenLine version, set for the showrooms later this year, promises even more. The 1.6 TDI feels surprisingly brisk, thanks to its 250Nm of torque. Once you’re up to speed, cabin refinement is excellent as well. The engine can get a little noisy while accelerating, though, and the more responsive 2.0-litre diesel will cost just £900 more in SE trim. The ride is clearly set up for comfort, yet though the Octavia has grown, the narrow footprint and light, accurate controls make it so easy to place on the road. Body roll is minimal in corners, and there is plenty of grip from the front tyres. But for extra security in poor conditions, both diesel models are available with four-wheel drive. Perhaps the most impressive thing about the new Octavia Estate is that it’s £460 cheaper than the equivalent VW Golf hatch, and that’s quite a saving. So, whichever way you look at it, the new Octavia Estate is excellent value for money.

Sport

By Roscoe Sanse 0 CD Tenerife 3 CD Marino 3 Real Madrid C 3 CD TENERIFE have won Group 1 of Segunda B! It’s party time!

Only this doesn’t mean a row of beans and Tenerife still have to negotiate a play-off to get back into the second tier of Spanish football. For those who don’t know, it works like this: Tenerife will enter “the winners’ pot”, which contains the three other group winners and, at the moment, that would be Alaves, L’Hospitalet (Barcelona) & Jaen. An open draw will see two matches, and the winning sides after two legs will be promoted.

www.canarianweekly.com

Campeones! The losers will join the remaining second, third and fourth-place sides in a series of matches that will leave two more sides joining in the promotion party. The play-offs are not for a few weeks as there are still two more league matches to play. Last Sunday, Tenerife assured themselves of top spot with another fine away win. And, like the previous weekend’s victory, it was done with a number of squad players stepping up. Sergio, Carlos and David Medina slipped in effortlessly, while Nico caught the eye off the bench. It’s doubtful they will see much game time in the play-offs, but all should feature in this Sunday’s match. Alberto played at centre-half alongside Rigo and I would expect them to keep those jerseys for the next two matches. And then,

who knows? It’s funny to think that three weeks ago, the centreback pairing of Bruno and Tarantino was firmly established, and yet both could now struggle to make the bench! Last weekend, Aridane poked home another

couple of poacher’s goals while Ayoze got his first for the senior side with a stunning strike. There is so much to like about this kid. In many ways, he reminds me of Iriome when he first burst on the scene six years ago.

He terrorised defences through his pace and also the unknown factor. Ayoze can do the same but, unlike Iriom, I hope injuries and confidence don’t set him back. Liverpool asked after Iriome and yet, here we are in 2013 and he

is playing third-tier football. This Sunday, it’s a welcome return to 5pm kick-offs as Alcala pitch up in Santa Cruz. I’ve missed the late-afternoon starts. Hopefully, the play-offs will be played at this time.

Collapse haunts Hammers TENERIFE Hammers C are not the first side to throw away a threeframe lead this season, and they probably won’t be the last.

The gap between success and failure in Division One is as thin as the chalk on a tip. Hammers C raced into a 3-0 lead in the Torviscas derby with Palms A (chasing third place), only to hit the proverbial wall. The frames were close, but Palms A showed their old league-winning mentality to grind out a 7-5 win, thanks in part to Pete’s stunning clearance against Tony. Even the return of Jester Bobby Baker couldn’t see the Hammers over the line. Their A team are another stride closer to the title following a routine 8-4 win against Bar La Cana, while Gaffers A were too strong for

Page 52

Terrace B. They came home 10-2, despite Juicy Jean taking another scalp. Gary was the latest “pup” to be put in his place by Jean! Terrace A are back in the top six after sneaking past Dreamers, with James beating Steve to steal a 7-5er. Potters have bragging rights over Knights after winning the Steak Bowl at the Phoenix Bar. Knights are mustard in the cup, but slipped to another 8-4 league loss, while it was honours even between Toscales A and Inn The Pink A. It’s game-on in Division Two because Next Door’s lead is now just a point after Exiles A took advantage of Next Door’s free week. The Silencians were delighted with a 9-3er at Ryans Bar. There are just four games to go and, arguably, they have the tougher runin. But after being top all season, will Next Door fold under the pressure?

Treehouse A are on a fine run, but they look to have left it too late to be crowned champions. They won twice this week, firstly at

Bluebell B then 10-2 at Shorty’s. Bar 13 caused an 8-4 upset at home against James Place, while Inn The Pink B beat Blue-

bell 7-5 to maintain their good form. Exiles B just got home against Hoppy’s Bar while Palms B beat TPT 7-5, but this

doesn’t tell the whole story. Hat-tip of the week goes to eightyear-old Harley, who beat Richie with some ease! Way to go kid!

www.canarianweekly.com Alcala are in trouble and need a miracle to stay up. The sides around them are already kicking up a fuss as they feel that Tenerife will play a weakened side. While that will be true, it’s not fair. As we’ve seen over the last few games, the squad players are more than capable. Rigo, for one, has taken his chance and for me, is now first choice. Ayoze has done the same. I wonder who else will grab the opportunity? There are play-off places up for grabs. I’m sure captain and goalie Sergio Aragoneses will have the fortnight off, and young Roberto will get some match practice. Not that Alcala should keep him very busy! The visitors have won once only on the road all season and have only collected seven points on their travels. In fact, they have Position

only scored in five away matches. I think I could be in goal and keep a clean-sheet this Sunday! There will be a party atmosphere as CDT will collect a modest trophy for winning the section, and there should be over 10,000 there. It will also serve as a good barometer for what the play-off will be like. Last season, Tenerife attracted over 13,000 for the playoff matches, but they haven’t looked close to that this season, despite having a better side and better results. There were barely 200 in Las Americas again as CD Marino played out an entertaining draw with Real Madrid C. They shared six goals and the excellent Sandro scored the pick as Marino kept their fine run going. Afterwards, chairman Jose Barrios called it Points

quits, citing the lack of support from fans and the community. For all his faults, he leaves the club in a better state - and delivered the club’s first promotion for a generation. He made mistakes, but it’s not as though anyone else was coming up with too many answers. Elsewhere, Barcelona can clinch the La Liga title this weekend in what has been the most boring title race in recent memory. At the bottom, Mallorca look doomed - and then, perm one from five. In the second division, Elche will be promoted this weekend if they win at home to Barca B and Alcorcon don’t beat Villarreal. Las Palmas are currently in the last play-off place, and they should help their cause with a win at struggling Huesca.

Underdogs Wigan would settle for Premier safety IN England, it’s FA Cup Final weekend! And for the first time ever, the match is live from Wembley Stadium on Oasis Fm! So who better to give the preview than the match presenter, Adi Benson? As a football fan, I always getting a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach as May comes around. It heralds the end of another season and brings almost a three-month gap in the football calendar. However, before I slip into a ‘lack of football’ depression, we do get one final hurrah, which is the FA Cup Final. As we all know, this is the oldest cup competition in the world and is probably the mostwatched event behind the World Cup. This year’s final is the 132nd time this trophy has been contested, and it sees Manchester City lining up against Wigan Athletic tomorrow (Saturday). For the last couple of years, the kick-off time has been 5:15pm and that continues this year, although a lot of the purists would prefer the traditional 3pm start. The FA have set this time to cater for a larger global TV audience. This is the 10th time Manchester City have appeared in the final, having won the trophy five times. Their most recent success was the 2011 final, and they have been runners-up four times.

This year’s competition started for them with a third-round tie against Watford back in January, which they came through 3-0. They then took on Stoke, Leeds, Barnsley and Chelsea, respectively, to book their place at Wembley. Wigan have never appeared in an FA Cup Final and, despite needing a replay to see off Bournemouth in the third round, they then came past Macclesfield, Huddersfield, Everton and Millwall to take their place alongside City at Wembley. As well as wanting to win the trophy, Wigan will also be looking to lay to rest a ghost for club-owner Dave Whelan, who suffered Cup Final heartbreak back in 1960 when he was playing for Blackburn against Wolves. He sustained a broken leg in the first half and Wolves went on to win the Cup 3-0. Tomorrow afternoon,

City fans will occupy the west end of the stadium, with the Wigan fans taking up their places at the east end. After a coin toss, as won by City, Wigan will play in their black change kit, while City will wear their familiar sky-blue kit. Andre Marriner will be the referee and, apparently, shed a few tears when this was confirmed! But which team will be crying tears of joy and which team will be crying tears of sorrow come full-time? Well, City are the favourites going into the game but, as we have seen time and time again, the underdogs can often come through. Wigan will be hoping to put a shine on a season which could see them relegated to the Championship. Would the fans swop Cup glory for Premier League safety? You can bet your mortgage they would! Either way, because of City’s league position and Champions League place assured for next season, Wigan will get the honour of playing in next season’s Europa League. So for all the excitement of the FA Cup, join us live on Oasis Fm from 4pm with full, uninterrupted commentary from Wembley Stadium at 5:15pm, right through to full-time, including extra-time and penalties if required.

BT Sport secures MotoGP TV rights

BT Sport has secured a TV deal for MotoGP from 2014 over five years, after a decade of coverage on the BBC. Last summer, BT secured the rights to broadcast 38 Premier League matches per season from 2013-14 to 2015-16, along with English Premiership Rugby and the women’s tennis tour. BT has acquired ESPN’s TV channel in the UK and Ireland, and in February it will show live games from the FA Cup, Scottish Premier League, Europa League and German Bundesliga.

Surrey cricket captain goes home for surgery

Surrey captain Graeme Smith is to return home to South Africa for ankle surgery, and the county says he will be out of action for “a few months”. That means the 32-year-old, who also captains South Africa, looks set to miss the Champions Trophy. “To have to head home so early in my time at Surrey is very frustrating,” said the opener, who began a three-year stint at The Oval this season. “I leave the team in a good place and hope to be back as soon as possible.”

Will it be no. 3? Can Luke Donald make it a hat-trick of wins in this year’s BMW PGA Championship The BMW PGA 2013 takes place at Wentworth from Thursday 23rd May until Sunday 26th May. The announcement comes as another boost to the European Tour’s flagship event, which

begins on 23 May at the Surrey course. Wentworth chief executive Julian Small says the 2013 tournament will benefit greatly from featuring all 12 of the winning European Ryder Cup team. Luke Donald, the winner for the last two years, leads the rest of the team that beat the USA in September. “This year we are the only professional golf tournament in the whole

of England,” Small told the BBC . “That gives us a focus. The field we have is akin to a major championship, in terms of the quality of players.” Small added: “We review after every tournament and say ‘what can we do better?’. It is about learning, developing and evolving. “This is the player’s championship. We have built long-term relationships with the players

here at Wentworth and it is a chance to have a great festival and championship.” Attendances at Wentworth have increased by 73% since 1995, with over 95,000 attending over the tournament’s four days in 2012. Sky Sports will show continuous live coverage in the UK of all four days of the flagship event of the European Tour, the BMW PGA Championship, from Thursday 23 May – Sunday 26 May.

Sir Alex stands down - and Moyes steps up to greatest challenge DAVID MOYES steps into the biggest pair of boots ever when he replaces manager Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford next season.

The much-respected Everton manager takes over at Manchester United on 1st July after signing a six-year contract. The 50-year-old, who described his appointment as a “great honour, paid tribute to his fellow Scotsman, saying: “I am delighted that Sir Alex saw fit to recommend me for the job. “I have great respect

for everything he has done - and for the football club. I know how hard it will be to follow the best manager ever, but the opportunity to manage Manchester United isn’t something that comes around very often.” Sir Alex, who is stepping down after

10th May - 16th May 2013

26 astonishing years at United’s helm, said the club had “unanimously agreed” on Moyes. And he described the achievements of Moyes at Everton as “magnificent”, adding: “David is a man of great integrity with a strong work ethic. “I’ve admired his work for a long time

and approached him as far back as 1998 to discuss the position of assistant manager here. “He was a young man then at the start of his career and has since gone on to do a magnificent job at Everton. “There is no question that he has all the qualities we expect

of a manager at this club.” The appointment of Moyes, said to be made from the same gritty mould as Sir Alex, was confirmed in a statement on Manchester United’s website. However, the club inadvertently made the announcement on their Facebook page, starting a flurry of activity on Twitter and other social media. Earlier, Everton confirmed Moyes would be leaving at the end of the season. A club statement said he had been an “outstanding manager” who had made a “massive contribution” to Everton. Moyes has managed Everton for more than a decade, joining in 2002 after a productive spell in charge at Preston North End. And despite his comparatively meagre budget at Goodison Park, Moyes has kept the team in the Premier League’s top eight since 2006. His final two games as

Everton manager will be against West Ham and Chelsea. The club will start an immediate search for a replacement, with Swansea’s successful Michael Laudrup and Wigan’s classy Roberto Martinez said to be front-runners. Sir Alex, 71, guided United to 13 Premier League titles and two European Champions League crowns during his time in charge. “The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about, and one that I have not taken lightly,· he said. “It is the right time. “It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape, and I believe I have done so.” The appointment of Sir Alex’s successor put an end to speculation that Real Madrid’s Jose Mourinho could be given the job. The fiery, former Chelsea boss, who was deemed “not suitable”, has also been linked strongly with a return to Stamford Bridge.
