The Real Hustle TWO men were arrested at Tenerife South’s Reina Sofia Airport on Tuesday carrying counterfeit notes totalling 56,000 euros.
The suspects, one aged 36 and referred to by the initials IS, and the other, 40-year-old CWTF, were detained initially by National Police in the airport’s police station. The story is of an unbelievable, real-life hustle. The fraudsters were attempting to lure wealthy businessmen into a scam involving the purchase of fake euros, which would turn into legal tender once treated with a miracle liquid chemical. The hustlers would carry out a demonstration at a pre-arranged meeting, explaining the benefits of the miracle liquid to the potential victims, turning fake notes into the real thing. But little did the intended victims know they were being duped, because the notes had, somehow, been switched! It seems far-
fetched, but National Police have confirmed the events to us. The scam would mean the duo pocketing large
sums of legal cash, in return for the sale of the equipment to make counterfeit notes! On Tuesday, a local
Russians boost tourism figures Tenerife in May recorded a total of 372,878 tourists, representing an increase of 5.5 percent over the same month last year.
Tourism statistics, prepared by the Cabildo and analysed by the Department of Tenerife Tourism Research, find that the increase in customers occured both in hotels (+2.2%) but especially in non-hotel establishments with an increase of 12.5 percent. Economic Vice President and Minister of Tourism, Carlos
Alonso, explained that this is the second increase in tourists that has occurred. “These positive figures are the result of increased foreign tourism, which grew by 8.2 percent, and the containment of the decline of domestic tourism, which has fallen just 0.9 percent in the month, the smallest decline recorded so far this year.” Alonso also emphasised that the instability in Turkey, a destination competitor, is not at this time a reason for the increase in tourists due to the timing of the activity. But, once again the Russian market was
21st June - 27th June 2013
the fastest growing, increasing by a whopping 54.2 per cent over the same period. However, big gains have been seen in other markets, including the Netherlands, (+15.8 per cent), Britain, (+14.2 per cent) and France, (+9 per cent). The bad news is that the number of Italian visitors has fallen by a whopping 29 per cent, while those from Demark fell by more than 19 per cent. As usual the South received the majority of the visitors with 297,443 visitors in May, an increase of 6.3 per cent, while in the north things also improved with numbers up 4.8 per cent.
businessman was set to meet two individuals, of African continent origin, at Reina Sofia Airport, with a view to purchasing the equipment. Their scam might have gone to plan had the businessman not got jittery and informed the police. Once identified, the police detained the two men and searched
their luggage, which contained seven packages with items linked to counterfeit production, including: plates, ink, foil, forged notes and chemical products. A National Police spokesman told Canarian Weekly: “We believe that the men arrested may be part of a wider, gang-style operation and, therefore, the information is very
sensitive.” But Canarian Weekly can confirm that the two men detained were of African continent origin, and that they arrived at Reina Sofia Airport from another European country, which was not mainland Spain. It is thought that this is not the first time they had held business meetings of this nature.

Spanish bosses among highest paid in Europe Spanish CEOs earn an average of 788 euros per hour while the top earners rake in a figure closer to 950 euros every 60 minutes. Despite the current crisis, Spain’s top execs are amongst the highest pain in Europe, second only to European counterpart – Italy. At the bottom of the scale some of Spain’s lowest wage earners take home just 3.85 euros an hour.
The huge wage gap has been highlighted in a report by the Federation of European Employers. As a result it has sparked a debate about capping executive pay levels. In Italy CEOs can earn a whopping 1,144 euros per hour, according to the report. Spain is second with UK chiefs following with an average salary of 592 euros per hour while French CEOs take 47
euros less earning 545 euros per hour. In March this year, Swiss voters ruled to cap executive wages
with a 68% majority. The move means that company shareholders will now decide on executive pay levels.
Messi court date
AS we go to print the story is coming through that a Spanish judge has summoned Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi to appear in court on Tuesday 17th September over tax fraud allegations. The 25-year-old Argentine, who has four times been named World Player of the Year, and his father are accused of defrauding the Spanish authorities of more than 4m euros (£3.4m).

Wedding plans beached
COUPLES still cannot marry on beaches in the south of Gran Canaria, even though a proposal has been welcomed and even encouraged by most of the hospitality companies there, including hotels, tour operators and local businesses. The ‘Directorate General of Coasts’ or ‘Costas’ is still refusing permission, despite a request from San Bartolomé city over two months ago. Four beaches belonging to that municipality are set to be converted to cater for weddings but not until authorisation from the Costas, which can okay this type of event.
Airline’s Canaries expansion
JET2.COM, the British low-cost airline, is increasing its presence in the Canary Islands by establishing an aircraft base at Lanzarote Airport. The company will base a Boeing 737-800 aircraft there from November in preparation for the 2013-2014 winter season, when Jet2.com plans to increase the number of flights between the airport and the United Kingdom. And travellers to Tenerife this winter can look forward to increased flight frequencies from Leeds, Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle, East Midlands, and Blackpool, beginning 17th September
La Gomera’s fire-fighter
LA GOMERA will have a hydroplane based there permanently this summer to help tackle possible forest fires, such as those which affected the island last year. Despite this news, however, the La Gomera Council chairman also wanted a helicopter, which is “more suitable to the topography of the island”.

DURING 2012 the most popular baby names in the Canary Islands were Hugo for boys and Valeria for girls, according to the latest data from the National Institute for Statistics (INE). The latest data reveals that 218 boys were named Hugo last year, closely followed by Diego, (208) and Pablo, (192). As for the girls, Valeria proved most popular with 216 proud parents choosing the name for their little girl. Valeria was followed, in popularity, by Daniela, a name ousted from the top spot in 2011. Across Spain however, things were rather different with Daniel and Lucia topping the popularity stakes. Among the lesser
popular names were 479 called Guillém, and 401 each named Judith and Luna. Since last year, there are now 6,234 more Daniels in Spain and 6,363 more Lucías, and the name already found to be the most prolific among females in the country – María – was chosen by parents of 5,823 girls. Throughout Spain Hugo was the name given to 5,984 baby boys, Alejandro to another 5,744 and Pablo to 5,658, whilst 5,375 baby girls were named Paula and 4,748 called Daniela. Other names high in popularity for newborn boys were Álvaro, Ádrian, David, Diego, Mario, Javier and Marcos, followed by between 2,000 and
3,000 named Sergio, Nicolás, Iker, Lucas, Iván, Carlos, Miguel, Jorge, Martín, Marc, Álex, Mateo, Gonzalo, and Izan. Thousands of little girls born last year were named Sara, Carla, Martina, Sofía, Julia, Alba, Valeria, Claudia, Irene, Marta, Laura, Noa, Carmen, Adriana, Ainhoa, Elena, Ana, Aitana, Emma and Alejandra. The least-common names for baby boys born in 2012 were Mikel, Jon, Gael, Yeray, Omar, Adriá, César, Yago and Francisco Javier. And the most infrequently-seen girls’ names given to babies born last year were Irati, Ona, Arlet, Chloe, Lidia, Ane, Jana, Iris, Nadia, Diana, Malak, Salma and Nahia.
Last year, a total of 453,637 babies were born in Spain, a fall of 3.9 per cent on 2011 and the fourth year running in which the birth-rate has dropped. The INE believes this is related to the recession, with unemployment or lack of job security meaning women do not want to risk becoming mothers, as well as fewer women in Spain of childbearing age, and lower fertility levels of those who are. As in previous years, the reason the birthrate has not fallen even more is because of foreign mothers having children, particularly those from Arab countries and from Latin America although also, in smaller numbers, European women.

Observatory - open day -

The editor says... Email: editor@canarianweekly.com
Longest day THE longest day of the year, or the Summer solstice as it is known, occurs today (Friday, 21st June). The Teide Observatory, Izaña, which lies at the apex of three municipalities – Fasnia, Güímar and La Orotava, is opening its doors to the public today (Friday) and tomorrow, 22nd June, from 10am until 3pm.
The guided tours are totally free and will be
organised in order of arrival (you need to take a ticket on arrival). The famous observatory is 2,390 metres above sea level, and the site covers 50 hectares. If you’re going to visit prepare as if you’re going to Teide, dress in comfortable clothed appropriate for all weathers and take some refreshments, there are no facilities there. Astrophysics began in the Canaries in the early 1960s. The
first telescope for studying zodiacal light, light dispersed by interplanetary material, entered service in Tenerife during 1964. Its geographical location (between the eastern and western solar observatories), together with the clarity and excellent quality of the sky, mean that the Observatorio del Teide is ideally suited for studying the sun. For this reason it is home to Europe’s finest solar telescopes.
The Observatorio del Teide Residence, which has been in operation since January 1990, is a suite of facilities (including day and night-time dormitories, a kitchen and dining room, reception, living and games rooms, garages, a transformer station, power generator and solar panel park), which is available for use by scientific and technical staff linked to the Observatory. Orca Ocean mourns LAST weekend Loro Parque announced that sadly baby Orca Whale, Vicky, who was just ten months, had died.
An autopsy will take place to determine the cause of death. Loro Parque said, “It’s with enormous regret we inform you of the sad demise of Vicky, who with so much emotion and affection, the team of Orca Ocean cared for in her 10 months of life. Vicky stood out as a playful, agile and intel-
ligent youngster, and an animal that won the hearts of the entire team of Orca Ocean and of the visitors that knew her during this time.” The Orca Ocean team, who daily care for the animals and control all their movements, had noticed changes in her behaviour. For this

reason they’d consulted experts, including the chief veterinarian of Sea World, who flew especially from the United States to perform a check on Vicky, she eventually died leaving the family of orcas with six members. Vicky was born on August 3, 2012 at Loro Parque, located in Puerto de la Cruz. Her mother is Kohana, a female aged 10 born in the Sea World park in San Antonio, United States, she gave birth to her second calf after about two hours
of labour, constantly observed and assisted by the team of veterinarians, biologists and managers of the park. This was the second birth of an orca at the Orca Ocean facility, which opened in 2006. Immediately after being born, she was rejected by her mother Kohana and had to be hand-raised. She was the second calf that Kohana had rejected, following the birth of Adan in 2010. As a result this has raised issues over the breeding of Orca’s in captivity.
It’s when the sun is at its most northerly point, and this is why it is acknowledged as “the longest day”. When the summer solstice takes place in the UK, the tilt of the Earth on its axis means that we’re at our closest point to the sun. This results in the longest day - and the shortest night of the year. Depending on the calendar, the summer solstice occurs some time between 20th and 22nd of June in the northern hemisphere, and between December 20th and 23rd in the southern hemisphere. The word “solstice” derives from the Latin “sol” (sun) and “sistere”
(to stand still). This summer solstice gives us that much-needed excuse to get out and enjoy the longest summer evening of the year. Here in Tenerife today, we will see 13hrs, 57mins and 2secs of daylight, and then each day it will lessen. Many midsummer festivities are held throughout Europe, and thousands flock to Stonehenge, in Wiltshire, on the morning of the solstice to celebrate the day. And that’s the reason the Glastonbury festival is held when it is. Of course, these pagan traditions were coopted by the Catholic church. In many places, the summer solstice also coincides, or comes close to, the feast day of St John. It is marked here on Monday, the 24th, but celebrated mainly on the eve as it’s the Canarian version of Bonfire Night!

Spanish Under-21 European victory On behalf of Spain, Mariano Rajoy thanked its Under-21 football team for winning the European Championship. The Prime Minister, wanted to personally
thank the Under-21 European champions for their victory on Tuesday in Israel and wish them the best of luck for the future. He told them that, “although you are already champions, you still have many years of sport ahead of you” and the key, as always, is “to
persevere, work hard, never give up, take things seriously and try to do everything as best you possibly can”. Our football teams “have given this country many glorious years” and been the reason for much joy. “We are very proud”, he added.
For that reason and on behalf of Spain, Mariano Rajoy thanked the players, the technical team, the members of the Federation and its Chairman for “everything you have done” because it has been the “product of hard work, effort and dedication”.
Cops’ loo-roll wipe-out! P OL I C E M EN throughout Spain and, presumably, the Canaries, have been ordered to report for duty with their own loo rolls - because of a shortage! The Interior Ministry set aside 250,000 euros
for toilet rolls this year, and that budget nearly doubled the 2012 figure. The Force insists it still cannot afford the cost, yet Spain’s National Police bought around 1.2 million rolls in 2011 - a figure more than halved in 2012.
The contract for supplying this basic necessity stipulates that a basic, doublesheet type rather than the “premium” brand used previously will be provided by a supply company. But the Force says the
estimated 260 euros per 1,000 rolls calculated by the company will not cover their needs. Spain uses more toilet paper than anywhere else in the EU, an annual average of 14 kilos per person being employed.

on the 7th October. He was staying at the Torre del Conde Hotel in the Island’s capital, San Sebastian. It is believed he may have then gone to explore the walking trails of the Garajonay National Park. Richard had been due to fly home to the UK on the19th October but staff at the hotel raised
the alarm on the 14th October when they had not seen him for a few days. Guardia Civil recovered the body which was in an advanced state of decomposition. However due to the mountainous terrain the rescue helicopter from Tenerife had to be used to assist in the operation.

Bin bonfire
An off-duty National Police Officer arrested a 40-year-old man, C.J.A.F, on suspicion of causing several fires in bins. The man was arrested on 12th June, at about six in the morning, after burning several containers on the streets of Santa Cruz. The officer, who was returning home after completing his shift, saw the detainee throwing a burning

paper into a container that set alight. He identified himself as police; the arsonist fled but was arrested after jumping a fence into a residential complex. At that time, the police officer requested the assistance of other national police patrols and fire service. The damage caused by the various fires amounted to tens of thousands of euros.

Safety defects such as brakes, lights and tyres being below standard, or emissions being too high were the main reasons for failure. A total of 5.93 million cases of serious safety faults were found during ITV testing, and 900,000 were remedied afterwards so the vehicles would go on to pass the examination. The actual percentage of cars which failed was 18.5, or just under a fifth. That equates to nearly one in five cars failing. Although the number of failures was 0.8 per cent lower in 2012 than in 2011, the amount of dangerous defects found was 4.5 per cent higher. Inspectors say the most common problem was lights and indicators, accounting for 23.8 per cent, followed by tyres, wheels, the wheel axis or suspension – 21.4 per cent, or 3.2 per cent higher than in 2011 – and brakes, being 15.7 per cent of serious faults found. Nearly 12.3 million cars had minor faults which prevented them from passing the test, relating to lights and indicators (35.9 per cent), engines and transmission (18.9 per cent), the general condition of the car externally, bodywork, and chassis (16.5 per cent) and brakes (12.7 per cent). The rise in the number
of technical problems with cars found is thought to be partly due to the ongoing financial crisis, whereby vehicle-owners cannot afford basic repairs or services, and partly due to the new digital ITICI scheme run by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) in conjunction with regional governments so that the traffic authorities can tell in an instant whether or not vehicles have a valid ITV. Information generated from the car itself
while it is on the hoist at the ITV station is automatically picked up by the attached computer and sent in real time to the DGT, a new system in place to cut down on the proliferation of fake ITV stickers and pass sheets being sold on the black market. According to the DGT, if just 20 per cent of cars which were not put through their ITV and should have been, had in fact been tested, a total of 7,100 road traffic accidents, 7,000 injuries and 110
deaths could have been avoided. Cars up to four years old do not normally need an ITV unless they are ex-hire cars, and the first ITV notice will be sent by ordinary post to the registered owner. At four years old and over, they are tested every two years, and at 10 years old and over they are tested annually. Vehicles must show a current ITV sticker in their windscreens which show the month and year when the next one is due.

Spain tops the Benefit fraud charts abroad
With an estimated 800,000 Britons living in Spain, it’s the number one country in the world for Britons committing ‘benefit fraud abroad’.
Weather Outlook
More allegations are made about people living in Spain whilst continuing to receive UK benefits than in any other country where British expatriates live. So investigators from the Department of Work & Pension have issued a fresh appeal to British expats to report anyone they suspect of fraudulently claiming UK benefits whilst living in Spain, It will help stop taxpayers’ money being wasted on benefit thieves when it could be spent on valuable public services such as hospitals and schools. Married couple Peter
and Marilyn Flanders from Exmouth, Devon, lied to benefit officials about having no income or property in order to claim a variety of means-tested UK benefits including housing and council tax benefit. It later transpired that the couple owned a villa in Spain that, if declared, would have made them ineligible for the benefits. In total they had fraudulently claimed over £30,000 of UK taxpayers’ money. They were given confiscation orders and ordered to repay the money they had stolen or face imprisonment. David Freud, Minister for Welfare Reform, said: “Taxpayers’ money should be going to the people who need it most, not lining the pockets of criminals. The vast majority of British people overseas are law abiding. But those who are fraudu-
lently claiming benefits while living abroad are committing a crime. We are determined to put a stop to it.” Investigators say the three most common types of benefit fraud in Spain involve people who · are on means-tested benefits going abroad but failing to declare their absence · have undeclared property abroad · are working while claiming sickness benefits. In Spain, claims for Income Support or Pension Credit are the most frequently investigated for fraud. Benefit fraudsters are thieves, so if you suspect someone of committing benefit fraud in Spain, call the free and confidential fraud hotline on 900 554 440, or fill in the online form available at www.dwp. gov.uk/benefit-thievesspain.

Among the first customers of the service are, naturally, Siam Park, plus Costa Adeje’s H10 Gran Tinerfe and Iberostar Bouganville hotels, as well as several restaurants in a nearby mall. Canary Gas hopes to reach 15 gigawatts per hour of distribution this year throughout the Archipelago. The distribution company emphasises that this type of energy
supply is its clear commitment to improving environmental and energy costs, as well as lowering environmental costs, both during extraction, processing and transport. And keeping the price down for consumers. . The project’s first stage will be fuelled by propane, to be replaced by natural gas once plans for implementation in the Archipelago have been completed.

Shock death of Sopranos star JAMES GANDOLFINI, best known for his role as New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano in the TV series The Sopranos, died suddenly on Wednesday.
The 51-yearold American was suspected of having a heart attack while on holiday in Rome. He was set to appear at a Sicily film festival at the weekend. David Chase, who created Sopranos, believed Gandolfini to be one of the greatest actors of all time. “He was a genius,” he said. “Anyone who saw him even in the smallest of his performances knows that. A great deal of genius resided in those
sad eyes.” Gandolfini married former model Deborah Lin in 2008, and their daughter was born last year. He also has a son from a previous relationship. Fans have flocked to
the diner featured in the final scene of The Sopranos to pay their respects. Television network HBO, which was behind the hit series, said in a statement: “We’re all in shock and feeling
immeasurable sadness at the loss of a beloved member of our family. “He was a special man, a great talent, but, more importantly a gentle and loving person who treated everyone - no matter the title or
position - with equal respect.” Since The Sopranos ended in 2007, Gandolfini has appeared in a number of big-screen roles, including thriller Zero Dark Thirty and the
comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. Gandolfini also shared a Broadway stage in 2009 with Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis and Marcia Gay Harden in a celebrated production of God Of Carnage, in which he earned a Tony Award nomination for best actor. He was also in On The Waterfront with David Morse. He had been working on a new HBO series entitled Criminal Justice. His managers said in a statement: “It is with immense sorrow that we report our client, James Gandolfini, passed away while on holiday in Rome. “Our hearts are shattered and we will miss him deeply. He and his family were part of our family for many years, and we are all grieving.”
Top fashion tax-dodgers! DOLCE and Gabbana, leading fashion icons since the Eighties, have been convicted of taxdodging to the tune of millions. Designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, whose fashion house has dressed the likes of Madonna, Beyonce and Naomi Campbell, were found guilty of failing to declare 200 million euros (£171m) to authorities. The trial took place at Italy’s High Court in Milan, where they were accused of transferring control of their brands to a shell company in Luxembourg in 2004 and 2005. Italian authorities said setting up this firm, called Gado, was part
of a bid to defraud the state. The couple were each given a 20-month suspended prison sentence, and ordered to pay 500,000 euros (£428,000) to tax authorities. Defence lawyers plan to launch an appeal for the pair, who denied the charges all along. Prosecutor Laura Pedio said in her closing speech at the trial there was “rock-solid proof that the duo had committed sophisticated tax fraud”. But the designers were acquitted of misrepresenting income of 416 million euros (£356m) each. Two years ago, a judge threw out a tax evasion and fraud case against the pair. But the High Court later ruled
that they could be prosecuted for tax evasion, though not for fraud. Gabbana tweeted in April: “All that I care about is making clothes, that’s all. Let them do and say whatever they want. “To be accused of something that’s not true is not a pretty thing, but the heart of the matter is, who cares? We’ll all end up in the ground in the end.” Three other defendants, including two managers, were also convicted in the scheme and each given 16-month suspended sentences. Dolce & Gabbana, founded in 1985, has 250 shops in 40 countries around the world.

Chase Edwards, aged 30, of Lower Gorenl, was jailed for seven years and four months at Wolverhampton Crown Court for a string of offences, including theft, robbery and driving while disqualified and without insurance He pleaded guilty to all charges, including the theft of the vehicle and its apple-laden trailer, in Dudley, West Midlands.
21st June - 27th June 2013
Mr Timmins described leaving his office to investigate last March after hearing the door of his truck slam. He saw the thief in the driver’s seat and grabbed on to the roof rail while trying to smash the window and grab the keys from the ignition. After being dragged a few hundred metres along the road, he realised it was too dangerous to hang on any
longer as the pick-up accelerated away. “I let go and everything seemed to happen in slow-motion, although it was only seconds,” he said. “I bounced off a car coming in the opposite direction, which had stopped on seeing what was happening, and the trailer went over my leg.” Mr Timmins is still unable to walk and is undergoing physiotherapy.

UK blowing hot and wet!
BRITAIN’S run of wet summers could last for 10 years or more, according to senior meteorologists. The UK could be in the middle of a 10-20year cycle of rainyday blues, caused by a major warming of the North Atlantic Ocean, which pushes the jet stream south. When that happens, as it did last summer and is doing the same now, wet weather from the Atlantic is blown in over the country. The channel of winds which move from west to east is usually much further north of Britain, and, said Stephen Belcher, head of the Met Office Hadley Centre: “Predicting when this cycle will end is hard. “There have been similar patterns before - in the 1950s and the 1880s - and we are getting hints that we are coming towards the end of this current cycle. “However, it might continue for the next five to 10 years. There is a higher probability of wet summers
continuing, but it’s very early days in trying to understand why this is happening.” The findings came during an emergency meeting of scientists, chaired by the Met Office, to discuss the recent weather patterns in Britain. Six out of the last seven UK summers, excluding 2010, have seen aboveaverage rainfall. University of Reading researchers said the North Atlantic Ocean has alternated slowly between warmer and cooler conditions over the last 100 years - and cycles are understood to operate for a decade or more. Meanwhile, the UK basked in the hottest temperatures of the year so far on Wednesday - up to 90 degrees in parts - and then suffered heavy rain yesterday (Thursday), especially in Southwest England and South-west Wales The warm blast followed what the Met Office called the coldest spring since 1962, with a mean temperature across March, April and May of 6C (43F), which was 1.7C below the long-term average.
M&S announce new distribution centre Marks & Spencer (M&S) and DP World London Gateway jointlyannounced that M&S will build a major new distribution centre at the new deepsea container port and logistics park.
It opens later this year on the Thames, 25 miles from central London, in South Essex. Locating M&S’ new distribution centre at Britain’s new global shipping gateway means M&S will move millions of products directly from ships to the company’s new distribution centre at the adjacent London Gateway Logistics Park. The new London Gateway port’s south east location gives M&S closer access to key UK cities, which means goods will not travel as far to reach consumers. This model will be both cost effective for M&S and remove millions of road miles from UK roads along with thousands of tonnes of CO2.
As part of the £200million investment into DP World’s London Gateway, M&S will create approximately 700 jobs; there will also be hundreds of additional workers employed in the construction phase. The announcement, which marks a major milestone in the development of the 1,500acre site, was welcomed by Prime Minister David Cameron, who visited London Gateway this morning and discussed global trade with an audience of 200 business leaders. Marc Bolland, Chief Executive of Marks & Spencer, said: “London
Gateway will become our third large distribution centre in the UK as we transform our logistics operations into a modern and agile supply chain, fit for the future of M&S. As we become an international, multi-channel retailer, London Gateway will help us become more efficient by cutting costs and locating our supply chain closer to our stores and our international markets. It will also help us deliver against our Plan A objectives by removing road miles and emissions from our network.” His Excellency Sultan
Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chairman DP World, said: “I’m delighted to be able to welcome the Prime Minister and Marc Bolland to London Gateway. It’s a fantastic day for the UK, as British consumers will soon be getting more efficient, and more reliable, global supply chain infrastructure. This is a great place and a great time to be talking about global trade.” Simon Moore, CEO, DP World London Gateway said: “Marks & Spencer will have a world-class distribution centre connected to a world-class deep-sea port providing more reliability and efficiency for its business. By bringing ships carrying millions of products closer to the point of consumption we will help M&S to shorten its supply chain. The M&S team is truly leading the way here and we look forward to the next phase of the planning process.” Subject to planning, Marks & Spencer will begin construction of the new facility in 2014. London Gateway port is set to open in Q4 this year.
Revellers put expensive gadgets at risk As the festival and summer events season gets underway, research from Post Office has revealed that festival-goers will pack their rucksacks with an average £524 worth of gadgets.
It is estimated over 16 million people will attend one of the UK’s festivals and concerts taking gadgets worth a collective total of £8.3billion. Those heading to festivals and summer events also expect to spend an average £214 per person on tickets, accommodation and food (up 14 per cent from 2011 - £187). Of those attending, two-thirds (66 per cent)
Page 14
plan to take a digital camera, 10 per cent less than 2011, suggesting people are relying on their smartphones to capture those memorable moments. Over half (57 per cent) are planning to take a smartphone and more than one in five (23 per cent) will be packing an iPad, laptop or tablet device. The research also reveals 26 per cent of people attending an outdoor event this summer have previously lost, or had items stolen at events. A risktaking 37 per cent have stashed their valuables in the glove box of a car, potentially leaving valuables exposed to theft. Post Office Head of Home Insurance, Paul Havenhand, said: “Many people now think the latest mod-cons are
as essential as packing a tent, wellies and sleeping-bag; however, with the average haul valued at over £500, revellers need to ensure they stay alert and
safeguard any gadgets. “It is easy to forget about looking after your belongings while having a good time. Yet in the same way that a homeowner would not
leave their front door open, those having fun at festivals this summer should be vigilant about the security of their possessions and make sure any valuable
items are protected against loss, damage or theft. Some festival goers may also want to consider property marking valuables with a postcode, to make them less desirable to opportunistic thieves, or in the event they are stolen they can be tracked and returned. Some image conscious festival attendees can’t be without their styling tools; five per cent plan to take along a cordless hairdryer or hair-straighteners. And it’s not just women (eight per cent) who are concerned with keeping up appearances; two per cent of men admit they won’t be leaving home without their hair-styling kits. Post Office Home Insurance policies includes personal possessions cover of up to £1,500 as standard.

Licence-dodgers
“Appa r e n t ly my dog, which is a corgi, is related to the Queen’s dog so I didn’t think I needed a TV Licence,” is one of the many outrageous, real-life excuses given to TV Licensing by people caught watching TV without a Licence over the past year. With over 400,000 people caught watching TV without a valid licence last year, it’s perhaps not surprising a few of the excuses would test the laws of probability. Excuses ranged from the bizarre, “I could not pay as I only have two pairs of pants and they were both in the wash,” to the questionable, “I could not pay for my TV Licence because the Olympic torch was coming down my road and I could not get to the shop as the road was too busy.” One evader claimed he had not bought a TV Licence as he had “received a lethal injection,” whilst another didn’t want to buy a TV Licence for the full year because “knowing my luck I will be dead in
six months and not get value for money”. Stephen Farmer, TV Licensing spokesperson, said: Some of the excuses are simply hilarious whilst others show a great deal of imagination and creativity, but being caught without a valid TV Licence is a criminal offence and no laughing matter. "Joking and wacky excuses apart, it’s breaking the law to watch live television without a licence so anybody doing this risks prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000. Evasion remains at low levels of around five per cent, and the overwhelm-
ing majority of people are correctly licensed. We understand some people may struggle to pay in one go, so we offer a wide range of payment options to help spread the cost and suit people’s needs. These can all be set up quickly and easily online at www.tvlicensing.co.uk or by phone. In a first for TV Licensing, three ‘excuses’ have been turned in to short animation films by the BAFTA winning animation partnership Will Anderson and Ainslie Henderson from whiterobot. co.uk. Co-Writer and director of the short films, Will
Anderson, said: Our style of animation really lends itself to TV Licensing’s excuses. Using bold, vibrant animation we are able to develop the nature of the excuses, and abstract them with our sense of humour. The excuses were naturally funny, so it was all about how we could bring them to life. All of our work is particularly conversational, so it’s a good match. Animator and co-writer, Ainslie Henderson, added: As soon as we saw the list of excuses people had given TV Licensing I could see and hear
Malkie and the Crows saying them. They were exactly the sort of thing he would say if he was caught without a TV Licence, so for us, it was a great fit. The top three Excuses (“Stolen” “Lethal Injection” and “Lost Weight”) have been animated by White Robot and can be found on YouTube at: www.youtube.co.uk/tvlicensing TV LICENSING – TOP EXCUSES OF THE YEAR 1. Baby deaths: Guilty may now be named THE faceless people accused of covering-up failures by an NHS watchdog to investigate baby deaths correctly could now be exposed!
The Care Quality Commission was accused of destroying an internal report into maternity units, which were part of University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust. An independent investigation, on Wednesday, found that the CQC failed to carry out a proper inspection of the
Page 16
Morecambe Bay Trust, where up to 16 babies died. David Behan, CQC chief executive, said legal advice was being reviewed to see if the names of those responsible for deleting
a critical review of the initial inspection could be “put into the public domain”. He added: “Ever since I commissioned this independent review, it has been our intention to place the report into
the public domain. “We received legal advice that we could not name individuals, and to do so would be to break the law. We are now seeking a review of that original advice.” A spokeswoman said the review was being carried out now, but she couldn’t provide details of how long it might take, or when names might be made public. Concerns were first raised in 2008, yet two years later the Trust, which serves 365,000 people in south Cumbria and north Lancashire, was given a clean bill of health by the CQC. Wednesday’s report suggested that
CQC bosses, so concerned about protecting the watchdog’s reputation, ordered an internal review to be deleted because it showed their original inspection was flawed. One of the senior managers at the CQC at the time refused to comment when contacted by Sky News. Jill Finney, Deputy Chief Executive at the CQC between 2009 and March 2013, put the phone down when asked if she would discuss the scandal. She is now Chief Commercial Officer at internet firm Nominet UK. Joshua Titcombe was just nine days old when
died in 2008 in Furness General Hospital after staff failed to spot and treat an infection. It was one of the hospitals overseen by Morecambe Bay NHS Trust and his father, James, described news of the cover-up as “shocking”. Mr Titcombe added: “It embodies everything that is wrong with the culture in the NHS. It’s something that has been rotten about the system. “We need it to change. Patient safety should be the No1 priority, and organisations that work within regulation need to be aligned with that principle.”

Stones off-key for dogs THE refuge had a busy weekend, appearing at Arona’s En Colores event in Las Galletas, and at the Adeje Dog Show.
Rendezvous was so special
A GREAT big thankyou from the Arona, Las Galletas, Silencio Lions Club members to everyone who attended their entertainment special on Sunday. It was held on Golf del Sur at the Rendezvous Bistro, Winter Gardens, and extra thanks go to the entertainers and staff at the venue, for working extremely hard to make the event so enjoyable.
Page 18
The Lions would also like to thank the family and friends of a much-loved friend and colleague of the venue, who allowed the event to go ahead following her sad death on Saturday. The next Arona Lions’ event will be on Sunday, 7th July, at the usual CC Chapparal venue in Costa del Silencio, between 2-6pm, with acts to be confirmed.
Staff were raising awareness and promoting the refuge’s many dogs, who are all in need of new homes. The Accion stand was visited by several members of the public interested in animal welfare here in Tenerife. Some dogs love to collect large or small stones while out for their walks - and then present them proudly at their master’s feet. But since stones are hard and have no give, they can cause serious damage to a dog’s teeth, says Ursula Bauer, AktionTier’s Berlinbased vet. Firstly, the teeth are badly worn by the dogs biting on stones frequently. And, in the worst case, stones can actually break teeth, which can then lead
Accion del Sol news
to inflammation and infections. So this activity must be discouraged immediately, and substituted with purpose-made toys as an alternative solution for the sake of the poor dogs’ teeth! On another safety note, please remember the welfare of your cats and dogs now that summer is finally on its way. *Do NOT leave pets in vehicles in the heat *Make sure pets have adequate water to drink *Provide adequate ventilation for pets at
all times *Avoid exercising pets in the heat of the day *Provide necessary shade from the sun when it’s at its hottest Dogs should never be left in cars by themselves, even when the day is warm, as opposed to hot, because it can quickly heat up inside a vehicle. Leaving the car windows open and a bowl of water is not enough. That’s because a dog can cool down through its tongue and paw pads only. It cannot cool down quickly enough to cope with the
rising heat. If you would like to adopt a puppy or a fully-grown dog, come along to the Granadillabased refuge, by the windmills off the TF-1, which is open MondayFriday (3-6pm), or call 922 778 630 for more information. Accion is always looking for people who would like to walk some of the many dogs at the refuge. If you have a little bit of spare time and would like to volunteer, please ring or just call in. You would certainly make a few dogs very happy. Please call Accion del Sol on 922 778 630 for more information.

Who’ll go nuts over Peanut? REMEMBER the three “blind puppies”? They had non-functional tear ducts at only a few weeks old, and their eyes were completely dried out. It was causing them great pain and loss of sight and yes, we could have put them to sleep. Instead, we had a fund-raiser and paid an animal ophthalmologist to assess them. A lengthy, expensive and intensive treatment plan was drawn up and, thankfully, a foster family were able to commit themselves to such a high level of care. This week, we can tell you that everything was worthwhile. The damage has been repaired, the tear ducts are working again, and the prognosis is good. We thank foster parents Lynn and Johnny for all their hard work. It can’t have been easy, but they have fallen in love with Lucy (formally Stevie Wonder), the worst affected of the three, and have decided to keep her. Peanut (pictured) and his sister Ellie are now available for
adoption. Peanut is fully vaccinated, chipped and sterilised, for which we ask an adoption fee of 110 euros. Call us for more information on 629 388 102. EasyJet’s inaugural flight to Santiago de Compostela city
EASYJET has celebrated the launch of its first flight from London Gatwick to Santiago de Compostela, the capital city of the Galicia region in western Spain. The thrice weekly, year round flights are expected to be very popular with British holidaymakers looking for a city full of breathtaking historical monuments steeped in tradition and spiritual heritage. Visitors can enjoy the spectacular Santiago de Compostela Cathedral along with the destination’s unique blend of cultural influences at the heart of its cuisine and numerous other visitor attractions. The city is set against the beautiful backdrop of the Galician mountains and unspoilt greenery boasting over a million square metres of public parks and green areas and with the beach under an hour away by car, Santiago de Compostela really does have something for everyone. Paul Simmons, easyJet’s UK Director said:
“We’re delighted to be launching our inaugural flight from London Gatwick to Santiago de Compostela. Spain remains a firm favourite for British holidaymakers so with over 8.5 million seats available this year alone we’re sure that it will be a strong addition to our existing services from London Gatwick.” In November 2012, easyJet announced a strategic partnership with Spanish hotel institution, the Paradores de Turismo de España – the first collaboration of its kind for the hotel group, offering flight inclusive short breaks and holidays via the easyJet Holidays website. Located across mainland Spain (and the Canary Islands,) the Paradores offer a unique and authentic take on tourism with no two Paradores the same. The Parador Santiago di Compostela is often considered the most prestigious in the group’s portfolio and flights direct to the city will enable quick and convenient access direct from London Gatwick.
Holidays are healthy! There is no doubt that holidays provide happiness, offering a chance to either have as much fun as possible or relax all week.
Now, a new study suggests that holidays are also beneficial to people’s health, giving them the chance to recover from the stress of
everyday life and work. These findings were confirmed when a work and organisation psychologist from Finland’s University of Tampere recently studied how much impact a holiday has on a person’s health and happiness. It was found that those who spend money on concerts or family holidays were happier than those who bought material items. The psychologist, Dr.
Jessica de Bloom, concludes that experiences do not wear out over time, and material objects do not compare. The study found that another factor in holidaymakers’ happiness was being able to make their own choices about what activities to undertake during the holiday. Those who had the freedom to choose activities to suit their needs were happier than those
who were goaded into things. Cities like Barcelona and Amsterdam have no shortage of attractions, but being able to choose where to go is crucial. It was also found that taking short breaks as opposed to longer ones is more beneficial to health. Frequent breaks are said to be crucial to health as they give people a chance to relax on a regular basis. Source jet2.com
ABTA launch animal tourism guidance
ABTA has launched the industry’s first-ever Global Welfare Guidance for Animals in Tourism.
The guidelines have been produced by ABTA, working in partnership with the Born Free Foundation, and have been further developed through a consultation process with industry experts, ABTA Members, scientists, zoologist organisations, associations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) from around the world. They aim
Page 20
to tackle bad practice and improve animal welfare standards throughout all relevant sectors of the tourism industry. The Global Welfare Guidance for Animals in Tourism consolidate an abundance of existing guidance and set a benchmark for minimum requirements in animal welfare for the tourism and animal attractions industries globally. Their aim is to encourage these businesses to achieve good standards in animal protection and welfare and ensure customers have positive experiences when visit-
ing animal attractions. ABTA expects them to be of particular use for Members offering animal attractions in countries where requirements for animal welfare are not well documented and developed. The guidelines will initially be used by a group of ABTA tour operator Members: TUI Travel, Thomas Cook, Virgin Holidays and Cosmos. These tour operators have committed to using the guidelines to assess their supply chains and to ensure that the attractions that they offer meet the minimum requirements. ABTA will also send the guide-
lines to destination governments and tourist boards. Nikki White, Head of Destinations and Sustainability, ABTA said: “Animal attractions and experiences are a common part of holidays and are generally very popular with holidaymakers. Yet research and experience demonstrate that consumers want to be assured of good welfare standards in animal attractions. "There are currently no international animal welfare standards so our Members asked for our help in developing a set of guidelines
that could help them assess which attractions to work with.” “Many animal attractions already adhere to very high standards but standards can vary hugely from country to country. While we recognise that change will not happen overnight, we believe the guidelines are an exciting and innovative first step towards improving animal welfare standards and experiences for holidaymakers.” Will Travers OBE, CEO of the Born Free Foundation, said: “Concerned members of the public contact us in their thousands, dis-
tressed about what they often witness while on holiday. Now we have ABTA’s Global Welfare Guidance for Animals in Tourism and the weight of the UK travel industry to promote best practice, encourage higher standards in animal care and help phase-out some of the worst forms of animal exploitation quickly and effectively. I hope they will be adopted internationally.” As well as the global guidelines for animal welfare, ABTA has developed specific guidance for common types of attraction and situations.

A familiar name was also etched on to the women's trophy - Serena Williams equalled sister Venus's record of five Wimbledon titles, beating Agnieszka Radwanska in three sets.

We see it shine in the sky above us, but beyond our sight something dramatic is happening - the Sun is going into overdrive. It's more active now that it's been for a decade, sending eruptions of super-heated plasma and vast waves of radiation towards our planet. With the potential to disrupt our lives in dramatic ways. Using the latest satellite images, and the expertise of Britain's leading solar scientists, Kate Humble and Helen Czerski reveal the inner workings of our very own star, and the influence its mysterious cycles of activity have on our planet. They discover why the light reaching us from the Sun can be up to a million years old: they meet the teams who protect us by keeping a round-the-clock vigil on the Sun; and investigate why some scientists think longer term changes in the Sun's behaviour may have powerful effects on our climate.

Secrets from the Workhouse
12:15.................... Bargain Hunt
ITV1, 21.00
13:30 ......... BBC London News
In Victorian society the workhouse represented the underbelly of society, where anyone who was poor, homeless, unemployed or ill was sent to live. With no benefits system in place, destitute people were either left to starve on the streets or forced to submit themselves to the harsh conditions of the workhouse where they worked ten hours a day doing menial tasks such as breaking rocks up or picking apart ropes. Now, in this brand-new two part series, presenter Fern Britton, actress Kiera Chaplin, actor Brian Cox, actress Felicity Kendal and author Barbara Taylor Bradford go back to the sites of the workhouses where their ancestors lived to find out what happened to them. In the first episode, Fern Britton is shocked to discover one of her ancestors was dissected for medical research because his family couldn’t afford a funeral for him. Brian Cox learns that his great grandfather was branded a malingerer by the workhouse when they refused to believe he was really ill. Barbara Taylor Bradford discovers her grandmother was forced into the workhouse to give birth to two illegitimate children. And Kiera Chaplin discovers her grandfather, Charlie, was sent to a school for poor children when his mother was taken away from him and put in a mental asylum.

Love Your Garden (8 x 60 mins) will see the writer, broadcaster and TV personality travel the country to give surprise transformations to the outdoor spaces of some of Britain’s most deserving people. In each episode, Alan surprises garden owners who have an inspiring story to tell and whose outdoor space is in desperate need of a transformation. While the owner is whisked away, Alan designs the new-look garden – taking inspiration from the best gardens in the area and asking for help from local people and the owner’s friends in completing the project. Also on hand are Alan’s three co-presenters and garden experts - David Domoney, Katie Rushworth and Frances Tophill - who pass on to viewers the tips and techniques behind their own contributions to the new garden. Garden designer and consultant David Dodd leads the team of contactors who renew the outdoor space. Along with Alan they will transform the dreary outdoor space before welcoming the surprised owners back to what will have become their dream garden. Whether you’re a first time gardener or green-fingered horticulturalist, Love Your Garden is full of tips and surprises to inform and inspire everyone on how to redesign their own outdoor space.

Alan Titchmarsh returns with achoice new series of the hit gardening show. He comes to the rescue of a fellow gardener and his family in Hurst Green as they bravely cope with a life-threatening illness. Diagnosed two years ago with motor neurone disease, Malcolm Dean is confined to a wheelchair and unable to go outside and do the gardening he used to love. He, his wife Trish and nine-year-old son George have recently moved into a specially adapted bungalow a few doors down from their old home. But the sloping garden makes it virtually impossible for Malcolm to get much beyond the end of the ramp which his friends and family bought and installed. Alan turns up to surprise the family and to see for himself how unsuitable the current garden is for their needs. He then sends them away whilst his crack team of landscapers and horticulturalists arrive on site, hoping to build a garden that exceeds the family's expectations.

The film features Gavin, a 34 year old dad of two who spent many of his school years frustrated and angry as he could barely read or write, and ended up dropping out of his studies. Having experienced some difficult times, where he struggled to keep his life on track, Gavin shares his experience of finding Dyslexia Action and the difference that the charity has made to him and to his family's future.
Dates Channel 4, 22:00
Stephen is expecting Mia to turn up for a naughty afternoon in a London hotel. But after a long wait, Stephen starts to wonder if he's been stood up. He finds himself on a surprising and unexpected journey towards self-discovery, aided by a straight-talking stranger. Dates airs as part of Channel 4's Mating Season which explores the complexities and nuances of forming relationships in 2013, with a collection of documentaries and dramas that take a look at modern day relationships.
Why Am I Still Single? Channel 4, 22.35
One single man and one single woman turn detective on each other’s love lives in an attempt to answer that all important question, Why Am I Still Single? By uncovering the behavioural patterns and emotional make-up of a total stranger they will get a fresh perspective and the greatest insight into the reasons behind their own dating disasters and wrong turns when it comes to finding love. In a brand new First Cut documentary, two strangers will meet each other’s friends, families and ex-partners, be given access to social networking accounts and even sleep in each other’s beds. Naomi and Lex are both in their 30’s and everyone around them seems to be getting married or having children. They both thought they would at least be settled in long-term relationships by now but like for the majority of singletons in the UK, looking for love is more difficult than it seems. Before they’ve even met, Naomi and Lex are going to uncover the most intimate details of each other’s lives. They will interrogate exes on the real reason for their split, delve into each other’s childhoods and even read their old teenage love letters. Both of them will attempt to discover how each other’s behaviours and attitudes are sabotaging their search for love. By scrutinising a stranger’s relationship history, they’ll come to reflect on their own reasons for still being single in their 30’s. And when Naomi and Lex do finally meet up, each will reveal why they think the other person is single and what they have to do to remedy it. A few weeks later we return to see if confronting the truth about their relationship failures and following each other’s instructions has helped them to make a change. Directed by Juliet Riddell, Why Am I Still Single? will reveal the consequences of a stranger digging around in your past. Can someone you have never met before see things about you that you just can’t see about yourself? And can two complete strangers help each other to find love and happiness? First Cut demonstrates Channel 4’s on-going commitment to new and diverse talent strand presenting original and bold documentary films. For the first time since launching in 2007, First Cut films have increased to 60 minutes and are airing in a later slot to allow greater freedom for filmmakers to produce more ambitious work and showcase their storytelling skills.

Matt finish so glossy! THE summer is all but upon us, and entertainment venues are making their annual adjustments to programmes in readiness for the madness to begin.
This week, I have spent time with some amazing DJs from the Veronicas and Starco
areas of downtown Las Americas. After receiving an intriguing email from Olly, the manager of Tramps, saying: “If you wanna see something amazing, come down this Friday and see my new resident DJ, Matt Howes.” I couldn’t resist. Actually, I’m not good with surprises, so I googled the name and my eyes widened when I found him billed as “the
UK’s only one-armed DJ”. This, I had to see. When music is in your blood and you have passion in your soul, there is not much that will stand in your way when it comes to achieving your goals. Matt is a shining example, and it was a pleasure to be invited into the DJ booth to watch him work. In the face of adversity he has improvised, adapted
and overcome what you’d think would end a DJ’s career. Matt lost his right arm after an accident, but his ability to mix and operate as a club DJ is a long way from lost. Using his mouth, chin and nose to operate faders and buttons, he produces some incredible sounds, and he mixes beats within the house genre that are up there with the best DJs at world-class level. Matt has already achieved a high status in the DJ world, and he has worked on Radio 1 Xtra in the UK at the weekends, through the early hours of the morning. He is now one of the team of resident DJs at Tramps nightclub and will be performing throughout the summer in the main arena. Matt, an amazing talent and infinitely inspirational, has created
Veronicas strip is Sugar-coated The Veronicas strip has, for years, been a hub for the younger party-people, and music plays a big factor in where most of them congregate. There is an abundance of bars and clubs along this small stretch, which is well-known around the world as the place to go to party till dawn. I was immediately drawn to Sugar Reef, which was packed, inside and out. The

musical memories I will never forget - and he is also the reason I will be spending more time in Tramps this summer. People tend to be at-
tracted to bars for many different reasons and these reasons change depending on the location and age range of their target audience.
WHATS NEW...
TWO years ago, while working, I was approached by Lisa Bridge, who was on holiday with her family. Lisa expressed an interest in moving to Tenerife to start a new life as a singer. She had been performing in the UK for over a decade and asked for a little advice. I always say the same thing about singers on this circuit. Most bars offer karaoke as well as cabaret shows, and it is much more difficult for singers to get work here if all they do is sing, without much chat and personality. Lisa offered to do 15 minutes and I was sold on the voice immediately - and then
came the links. She engaged the audience so well, chatting to them like they were in her living room. She was so natural on the microphone, and this is the secret ingredient to being successful as an entertainer. The ability to endear oneself to an audience is a natural talent, and Lisa Bridge has that in abundance. I’m sure she will do very well here. I would like to wish Lisa, her husband Anthony and son Charlie all the best for the future - and a huge welcome to Tenerife. Lisa can be contacted for bookings on 672939346.
play any commercial music and pretty much sticks to deep, tech and progressive house. This is obviously working for Sugar Reef because it was the busiest bar along there. The bar staff are also top-class. Chay, the barman from Essex with his flaring, plus Becky, from Lincoln, and Jayne from Great Barr near Birmingham, work so well together that it is no surprise this bar is successful.
Throughout the summer the king of clubs will be presenting some amazing events featuring celebrity DJ’s and TV personalities in the main arena. The mighty Judge Jules will be kicking off the summer run in style on 26th June working with the resident DJs Scott Page and Matt Howes. These events always create a huge buzz around town with tourists and workers and tickets sell fast. So be quick and get booked. Follow the links or call the number on the poster to the right. Judge Jules began his career back in 1987 and has since gained global recognition. A keen Arsenal fan, Jules also has his own clothing range and is a very well respected contributor to music magazines. He is one of the UK’s most respected dance music DJs with his music on 43 compilation albums released between 1990 to 2010 with his own albums Proven Worldwide & Bring The Noise achieving success in the dance music industry. Without doubt he is a heavyweight of his craft and this will be a brilliant start to the summers big events for 2013 at The King Of Clubs, Tramps.

Technology is just plain and simple!
A WARM welcome to readers who, I hope, will benefit, be entertained by and also share our approach to IT (Information Technology).
It really isn’t a dry subject, and it deeply affects all of our lives (a topic which will also receive our attention from time to time). Right here, and always in plain English, you will read really useful tips, learn how to fix, know about advances and changes in technology which will influence what - and when you should buy! As physicist Albert Einstein once said: “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” Any questions, opinions or requests for information are most certainly welcome, and they can be delivered to alex@canarianweekly. com First, a little about me: Information Technology has been part of a life since I was a child. I envy those who had a “eureka moment” and knew in an instant what they wanted to do and where they were going, because I never did. My logical awareness and some radio skills led me, inexorably, to a university education in Communication Design. Strangely, I still found myself drawn towards “the nuts and bolts” of computers rather than theory. Having an engineer and a businessman for a father, perhaps, played its role. In my formative years day-to-day life was a background noise of

conversation and hotlycontested opinion, usually centred on the prevailing technical, commercial and sociopolitical events of the week. The downside is that you end up with an intense interest in almost everything in our astounding environment: far too many things and not enough time to study them with the depth they deserve. The upside is that you develop a love for deep conversations and discussions with fellow human beings, who never fail to surprise and entertain me with the depth and diversity of their knowledge. Helping and explaining something to somebody who doesn’t know, and, more importantly, listening to people explaining things you didn’t know, is always a profoundly fascinating experience. I still remember the shock of being told for the first time that if you shaved the fur of a tiger, it would still be striped. In fact, it’s the skin that is striped. Awesome!

Why didn’t they tell me that at school? Given my background, I hope readers will accept my diverse, sometimes judgemental and often provocative writing style. Responses, both positive and negative, will always be welcome, however loosely related to the matter in hand. I confess to receiving one “free gift” in life: an uncanny ability (which still surprises me) to understand and resolve complex technology issues. My free gift has propelled me through a whirlpool of civilian and military organisations in several countries, with a variety of interesting cultures, technologies and equipment. Most of my time is currently spent with INTECH in Tenerife, where my appropriatelynamed and gifted business partner, Jesus, and I continue our pursuit of computing alchemy, and helping people understand as well as solve, their IT and Security problems effectively. Our business also keeps its technicians accredited continually, via exams with the likes of Microsoft, Cisco and Ubiquiti, so we can take full advantage of our Microsoft partner programmes and Authorised reseller status.
The Which? Awards, launched in 2007, were co-hosted by TV presenter Natasha Kaplinsky and Which? Chief Executive Peter VicarySmith. The Awards publicly recognise and celebrate the very best businesses in the UK that consistently get it right for consumers. Aldi has been named Best Supermarket for its impressive range of Best Buys, quality food and good pricing. Three companies are celebrating receiving a Which? Award for the first time. NFU Mutual was crowned Best Financial Services Provider for its excellent performance and great customer feedback and technology company LG claimed the prize for the Best Audio-Visual Brand. There were two new
categories in this year’s Which? Awards 2013, one recognising excellence in customer care and another in computing. Samsung claimed victory in the Best Computing Brand category for its breadth of high performing models across the whole range. Amazon, which is also a first time winner, won Best Customer Care for its great customer feedback and demonstrating excellent service. Feedback from Which? members saw the Hampstead & Highgate Heating & Plumbing Company, based in Enfield, claim Which? Local Business of the Year. Which? chief executive, Peter VicarySmith, said: “In these tough economic times it’s fantastic that there are companies who still go the extra mile for their customers to provide good quality service and value for money products. Being recognised by Which? is not just a mark of excellence, it can boost business.
Research shows approval from Which? can influence people’s purchasing decisions and a third of people who’ve seen one of our endorsements say it might even make them increase how much they are prepared to spend.” The Winners Best Car Manufacturer: Skoda Best Home Appliance Brand: Bosch Best Retailer: John Lewis Best Computing Brand: Samsung Best Audio-Visual Brand: LG Best Financial Services Provider: NFU Mutual Best Telecom Services Provider: Tesco Mobile Best Supermarket: Aldi Best Photography Brand: Panasonic Best Customer Care: Amazon Which? Waitrose TV will be able to watch videos filmed in the garden and presented by TV gardener, Matt James, which will inspire them to recreate the look in their own backyards. A series of 12 short ‘how to videos’ will launch fortnightly from July till October this year. The launch of the new gardening TV channel and Waitrose garden comes in the same week as Waitrose launches its first television advert to feature Alan Titchmarsh. The advert focuses on the great British seasonal favourite; strawberries and tells the story of the sweeter strawberry. The filming shows the process of carefully selecting varieties to ensure that customers enjoy sweet strawberries week in, week out. Rupert Thomas, Marketing Director at Waitrose says: “We’ve always known that our customers enjoy gardening. Horticulture is a key area for growth within our business and we have expanded the range of plants and gardening tools in our shops and online. “Alan’s authority and knowledge really comes to the fore through
this new channel, which will provide trustworthy advice to seasoned gardeners and horticultural novices alike. Alan Titchmarsh says, ‘I’m really excited to be involved in the launch of Waitrose Gardening TV
and the new Waitrose garden. It’s a great opportunity for me to share my gardening knowledge with Waitrose customers. It’s a unique idea for a supermarket to launch its own garden and it really gives me
the freedom to show how a garden changes throughout the year with the seasons.’ The Waitrose Garden TV launched on June 19th to coincide with the new strawberry advert and can be accessed through Waitrose.com

Age-defy your hair By Carl from Robot
THERE’S nothing worse as we get older than to see the things we used to like about ourselves start to look a little frayed at the edges.
We all use creams and lotions to try to correct what we don’t like in the mirror, and some go even further! Well, while you’re looking after the rest of yourself, don’t forget to look after your hair. Yes, your hair gives your age away, too! If you’re looking at your hairstyle and feel it seems a little dated, then think what others might be saying. As we age, our hair gets thinner and loses its once-smooth texture. Hair colour gets replaced with white hairs and this, instantly,
Page 40
gives our age away. Try to stay away from styles which are too long - like past your shoulders if you’re over 50. Wear your hair in a style that “MOVES”. That means not backcombing it too much or lacquering it to death because this is soooo ageing. Keep clear of colours which are too dark, even if it were once natural. Also, darker shades draw all the colour out of your face as we age and never look natural. As for the condition, I cannot stress enough that keeping those frizzy white hairs tamed is a must. As you lose your hair colour, you also lose the condition. If your hair is coloured and you regularly blow-dry it, then you are fighting all these elements which will dry out your locks. I tell my clients: “REPLACE”, because if you are taking things
out of your hair, then you have to put something back. Moisturise your hair as you would your face give it the care it needs to fight the ageing process and you will see the results. Don’t neglect it and give up as you see those white hairs creeping in. Instead, invest in a colour to blend or cover up those early signs. And try not to leave it too late to apply colour because, if you have too many white hairs, the sudden appearance of colour can look a little artificial. Last, but no means least, trust your stylists. Let them advise you on what’s best for your style - and the overall condition of your hair. If you can’t decide yourself, then book a consultation with your salon to see what advice they give before you jump in with a new cut or colour.
Breast cancer breakthrough! A SURVEY of some breastcancer victims has shown that a “short-cut” could be introduced to lessen their suffering.
Cardiff specialists, who led the UK arm of a trial covering nearly 5,000 women throughout Europe, found that less-invasive methods can be as effective for some patients as going under the knife. Consultant breast surgeon Prof Robert Mansel believes it will mean fewer women requiring extra surgery because radiotherapy could be used instead to remove lymph nodes. To his delight, the trial found that radiotherapy was equivalent to surgical removal of lymph nodes in the armpit. Prof Mansel, from the University Hospital Llandough, and professor of surgery at Cardiff
University’s School of Medicine (Institute of Cancer and Genetics), was chief investigator for the UK study. “This is a very important trial because it is going to change the way we practise,” he said. “What normally happens nowadays is that we check the lymph nodes under the arm when we do the first operation for breast cancer. “And if there is spread to those lymph nodes, all the remaining lymph nodes are removed, conventionally by surgery at the moment. It is a big operation. “What the trial shows is that you don’t need to remove those lymph nodes, because you can actually treat the area under the arm by radiotherapy instead.” The professor added significantly: “This is the first trial to show this conclusively. Nearly 5,000 patients have been studied, and the rate of any problem
coming back in the arm is actually tiny. “It is in the order of 1% - and it is no different from doing surgery!” He is sure that adopting a radiotherapy approach, rather than secondary surgery, would lead to swifter recovery with fewer side-effects for patients. And it would prove a big saving in NHS funding. “It has great potential for savings in the NHS, which is unusual, because we will do less surgery,” he said. “It means saving on expensive operating theatre time - and the patient is having radiotherapy anyway to the breast area.” Alison Essaye, from Tondu, Bridgend, had surgery for breast cancer four years ago, followed by radiotherapy, which left her overjoyed. “I think it’s fantastic what they’ve done with the research and the study,” she said. “If you had to go through a second lot of surgery, it would be even more painful. “They have got good results for the future, for women and men and we mustn’t forget the men.” The trial started in 2007, and 85 patients from the Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan took part, alongside some patients from Manchester. Chris Morris, a research nurse with the National Institute for Social Care and Health Research, said the study’s findings could “improve future patients’ experience.”

By Val Sainsbury RED warning logos will appear on food considered “bad” for health under a new traffic-light labelling scheme.
The colour will signal products which are high in fat, saturated fat, sugar and salt as part of an anti-obesity drive designed to encourage healthy eating. Amber and green will indicate foods deemed “medium” or “good” in terms of health value, according to the Department of Health and Food Standards Agency (FSA) policy. The voluntary scheme was unveiled by the Government on Wednesday and has already received backing from those supermarkets and manufacturers which had previously opposed

it. Nestle, Mars, PepsiCo, Premier Foods and McCain have signed up, along with major retailers such as Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Marks & Spencer, the Co-operative and Waitrose which, together, account for 60% of UK food sales. Other companies are now under pressure to back the controversial regime, which has been welcomed by some health and consumer groups as a major breakthrough in the war against obesity. Almost two in three adults and one in three children are overweight. Public Health Minister Anna Soubry believes it is time for a standard, traffic-light system to replace the current, confusing mix of nutrition labels “We all have a responsibility to tackle the challenge of obesity, including the food indus-
try,” she said. The labels will also carry figures to identify the level of fat, salt and sugar in terms of grams, and as a percentage of the so-called “reference intake” - the recommended daily maximum for adults. While the system identifies processed food, red warnings will also appear on items such as salmon, cheese, fullfat milk and some meat,
because they are high in fat, even though they contain important nutrients. The system will aim to reduce the annual £5.1billion spent by the NHS on obesity-related illnesses such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Simon Gillespie, chief executive of the British Heart Foundation, called it a “first-class scheme” which will
make it easier for shoppers to make more informed choices. Richard Lloyd, of Which? added: “With levels of obesity and diet-related disease on the increase, it’s vitally important that people know what is in their food.” Sainsbury’s boss Justin King said the industry had a “once-in-a-lifetime” chance to take a consistent approach. But Tam Fry, of the Child Growth Foundation, said the Government should have made the labelling compulsory. He added: “The problem we have is that 40% of food will not be covered by the new label, and that will create confusion. “Also, we have a situation where foods which are important for health, such as oily fish, cheese or milk, will get a red label, which is inter-
nationally understood as a warning to steer clear. “I would have preferred a series of shades of red to make the scheme reflect this.” There is also concern that figures on the new labels, which are being phased in now, give nutritional information in the context of an adult’s daily diet. As a result, the information beyond the colour is not much use for children. Professor Mitch Blair, of the Royal College of Paediatrics, called for a more drastic approach. “We need to look at reducing the consumption of unhealthy foods by measures such as taxation of sugary drinks, responsible advertising that doesn’t target children and ensuring healthy foods are readily available and affordable,’ he said.
One-jab joy for diabetics? DIABETICS could be treated with just one annual injection of insulin in the future. British scientists are hoping to develop stem cells that could release insulin for that period by coating them in a special, bio-degradable matrix. The new technique could make it possible, because recent research involves engineering blood stem cells into insulin-secreting cells. Experts at London’s Imperial College, led by Professor Nagy Habib,
21st June - 27th June 2013
and scientists at Hammersmith Hospital, are now planning human trials of the new treatment after successful laboratory studies. Dr Paul Mintz, a leading stem-cell researcher at Imperial College and a member of the team pioneering the research, said: “This is a fantastic breakthrough which, we hope, will end the burden of daily jabs for diabetics.” He added: “The beauty of this treatment is that we manipulate the patient’s own stem cells,
avoiding the complication of giving them something foreign, which their body will reject.” In diabetes, the pancreas fails to make any insulin which, crucially, controls blood sugar levels or doesn’t make enough! However, in laboratory studies, researchers have been able to get 35% of engineered cells to make insulin. The scientists are now planning to nurture and grow these cells, so that they have a colony of 100% insulin-making cells which can be injected into a patient’s body. Diabetes costs the NHS hundreds of millions a year, and Dr Ian Gallen, a leading consultant who treats many patients with the disease, said: “This is an amazing discovery. A once-a-year jab for diabetes would have a huge impact. “If we could keep patients stable, knowing their insulin levels wouldn’t fluctuate, it would represent an enormous saving of time and money for the NHS.” Right now, there are more than four million people in the UK with diabetes, which represents a great burden to the NHS.

flexibility in bringing our offer to new audiences as well as building on our reputation for quality. The arrival of little Waitrose at John Lewis Watford is the latest example of how we aim to respond to our customers’ needs, ensuring they not only have access to our ranges and services, but can shop as conveniently as possible whether they are doing a top up shop or just picking up a quick snack. "There are still many parts of the country where customers cannot access the Waitrose brand easily, and convenience is integral to unlocking much of that opportunity." To officially open the little Waitrose at John Lewis Watford, a ribbon was cut by representatives from the three local organisations the shop is supporting as part of its charitable giving scheme, Community Matters; Herts Inclusive Theatre, The Cure Parkinson’s Trust and Herts Mind Network.

Study reveals unhealthy lifestyles of TV soaps The UK’s favourite soap stars are portraying irresponsible lifestyles, with high levels of unhealthy eating and alcohol consumption, and a total lack of exercise. That is the conclusion of a new study by The Co-operative Food, which reveals the full extent of the characters’ unhealthy lifestyles displayed during primetime TV. Working with Liverpool John Moores University Business School, more than 830 scenes of the UK’s four most popular soaps - Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks - were analysed over a two-week period to provide an in-depth character examination. The results revealed unhealthy eating habits, potentially dangerous amounts of alcohol drinking and alarmingly low levels of physical activity. In total, viewers were exposed to almost 10 times as many examples of characters drinking or referring to alcohol, compared to healthy drinks. Of all the drinks consumed by characters, 57% were either alcoholic or sugary, compared to just 6% which were considered healthy, while copious amounts of tea and coffee were also drunk. According to findings, 72% of the food consumed, or referred to, was unhealthy - three times the amount of healthy food, and the level of exercise undertaken by characters across the four soaps was virtually non-existent, with only five references or examples of exercise across the entire two-week period. Yorkshire’s favourite village, Emmerdale, was the unhealthiest in the whole of soapland, with 79% of all food-related scenes featuring unhealthy eating, and more than half (53%) of all the drinks consumed, or made reference to, being alcoholic. Emmerdale had the most examples of adults drinking alcohol in front of children. In two sep-
arate episodes, larger than life old-age pensioner, Sandy Thomas drinks whisky in his den in front of impressionable teenager, Sean Spencer. Despite having previously suffered a heart attack, Emmerdale’s long-serving, Eric Pollard is the overall unhealthiest soap star, with the highest amount of unhealthy eating and unhealthy drinking of all soap characters. Eric is either drinking or referring to alcohol in 62% of scenes he’s in, either drinking during the daytime in the Woolpack, or at home, with a glass of red wine by his side while cooking dinner. Residents of Albert Square were the second worst-offending soap stars, with 87% of all food eaten, or referred to, being unhealthy. Smoking levels were the highest, too, with smoking featured in 5% of all scenes, due to the nicotine habits of soap stalwart, Dot Branning, and her wayward stepson, Max Branning. And, despite the amount of unhealthy food consumed, there were no examples of characters undertaking any form of exercise. In the leafy suburbs of Hollyoaks set in Chester, the lifestyles of the young and trendy were also surprisingly unhealthy - 64% of all food consumed, or referred to, was unhealthy, and 54% of all drinks were alcoholic. Across scenes set in the evening, the amount of alcoholic drinks consumed or referred to, increased to a staggering 91%. During the two-week period, young mum, Theresa McQueen, was the only character to undertake any exercise, with just one trip to the gym. On the cobbles of Weatherfield, Coronation Street provides a healthier picture when it comes to mealtimes, with 41% of all food consumed, or referred to, being healthy, making Corrie the healthiest soap. Loveable Fiz Stape has the healthiest diet in soapland,
21st June - 27th June 2013
even commenting that the skin on a jacket potato was the “best bit”. Dev Alahan’s children, Aadi and Aisha, went swimming once during the two-week period, which is more exercise than anyone else on the street. However, this activity is tempered somewhat by the kids eating a bag of chips each in their dad’s shop afterwards. The study is intended to raise awareness of the importance of a healthy, balanced diet and coincides with the launch of a new range of healthier products from The Co-operative, designed to make it easier for customers to make healthier and informed choices. Janet Taylor, Diet and Health Manager, The Co-operative Food, said: “I’m a selfconfessed soap addict, but this study clearly highlights the irresponsible approach taken to diet and health by the scriptwriters. Fruit bowls may feature in a couple of shots, but only one character is shown eating fruit during the entire two-week study - Minute Mart co-owner, Denise Fox, in EastEnders, is seen eating a tangerine while lying on the floor drunk. “As a retailer committed to helping people make healthier choices for themselves and their families, we’re hoping that by uncovering the unrealistic and potentially dangerous lifestyles portrayed in the soaps, people will recog-
nise that their favourite characters could run the risk of heart disease and obesity if they adopted these lifestyles in real life. We’re calling on the programme makers to present a more balanced picture.” Doireann Maddock, Senior Cardiac Nurse at the British Heart Foun-
dation, said: “Show producers are cooking up a hotpot full of trouble for our best-loved soap stars by putting them at an increased risk of an on-screen heart attack or stroke. “Walford, Coronation Street and Emmerdale would be much healthier places if their famous residents were served up a more balanced diet, got active and drank only the recommended amount of alcohol when the cameras are rolling. “If Eric Pollard wants to reduce his risk of that second heart attack, he needs to spend less time in the Woolpack and more time enjoying brisk walks around the Yorkshire Dales and a diet packed with fruit and veg.” Dr Aric Sigman, a psychologist involved in health education, said: “While we hate to ad-
mit it, we are influenced by what we see on TV, yet the effects are subliminal and we’re not aware of it. Children and young people are influenced even more than we are by the role modelling and ‘normal’ behaviours and habits they see on TV. “There is now well established medical research indicating that child obesity and alcohol consumption are influenced by what children see portrayed within their screen entertainment. For all of us, years of exposure to fictional TV lifestyles normalises and creates baselines for everyday health behaviours, both for better, and in this instance, for worse. Given the generally poor state of the nation’s health, it could be argued it’s a case of you are what you watch.”

By Jav SUZUKI, Japan’s second-largest manufacturer of small cars, are planning an ambitious launch of five new models over the next three years.
The forward-thinking company will include a B-segment SUV to rival the Nissan Juke, and an efficient new city car. First off the assembly line next summer will be a replacement for the Splash and Alto, but featuring a boot which matches the current Swift. This car will be built at Suzuki’s factory in Thailand and will have a tweaked version of the current three-cylinder petrol engine to emit around 80g/km of C02. That will ensure it being a class leader in terms
Suzuki pledge a five-star packet
of efficiency. According to Suzuki’s sales and marketing manager Dale Wyatt, the new city car will have similar dimensions to the Splash. But pricewise, it will be priced to sit between the two current
models in the range. The Swift range will be updated this year with the introduction of a five-door version of the Swift Sport hot hatch to broaden its appeal, as well as the introduction of a 4x4 model.
Apparently, there will be two versions of the four-wheel drive Swift. The first will look exactly like the standard car. But the range-topper will be given a styling make-over, with a raised ride height and chunkier
tyres to make it a direct rival to the Fiat Panda 4x4. Next on the agenda, in early 2015, will another small SUV - a B-segment rival - with high hopes of putting pressure on the likes of the Renault Captur, Peugeot 2008 and Nissan Juke. This machine, to be built in Hungary, will be based on a shorter version of the chassis in the SX4 S-Cross, which is scheduled to hit the UK showrooms this October. It will be available with both two and four-wheel drive and is likely to use the same engines as its bigger brother. But it will feature a much more emotional design and wider personalisation options to make it more desirable, with a starting price of around £13,000. Following these two models, a production
version of the G70 concept is under consideration, there is a strong possibility that this car could use a twocylinder turbo petrol engine which could be supplied by Fiat. Early 2016 will see the launch of a small MPV which, apparently, has been designed for customers who like the dynamics of the Swift but need more boot and rear space for passengers, while the all-new Swift will also arrive later that year. Company sources say that these new models could push annual UK sales past the 40,000 units mark. But the go-ahead Japanese firm are determined to remain a profitable niche brand, with sustainable growth far more important to the company than major expansion.
Poetry in Motion as Golf hits 30m mark
VOLKSWAGON have now produced an astonishing 30 million Golfs over a 39year period.
And that, say the company, sets a production record for the “most successful European car ever”. The model achieving this remarkable milestone was the latest BlueMotion, which rolled off the produc-
tion line at their plant in Wolfsburg, Germany. And, claiming fuel economy of 88.3mpg and CO2 emissions of 88g/km, VW say it is the most efficient Golf ever produced. They began building the Golf in 1974, and the German firm have calculated that an average of over 2,000 people worldwide have purchased a new Golf every day for the past 39 years. The ceremony also
21st June - 27th June 2013
coincided with VW receiving this year’s Car of the Year award for the Mk7 Golf. Professor Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG, accepted the award at the event, saying: “The history of the Golf is also the history of automotive progress. “With technologies such as the safe frontwheel drive of the first Golf, the debut of the
TDI in the third Golf; ESC and the dualclutch gearbox of the fourth Golf, and the standard Automatic Post-Collision Braking System of the new generation, this car has continued to democratise progress.” He added: “An optimum of safety, comfort and driving fun are no longer a question of money, thanks to the Golf. And so our bestseller lives up to the Volkswagen name.”
BMW 4-series is so appealing HERE is the definitive production version of the BMW 4-series coupé, successor to the highly-regarded BMW 3-series coupé. The new two-door is set to go on sale in the UK in October, from £31,575 for the entry-level 420d SE, after making its grand public entrance at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, Three turbo-charged engine options will be offered initially, with three more forcedinduction units to follow.
In a move aimed at providing the 4-series with a broader appeal than its predecessor, there will also be a choice of either rear or four-wheel drive in selected models. Five trim levels - SE, Sport, Modern, Luxury and M Sport - will be offered. The 4-series, first previewed in concept form at the Detroit Motor Show in January, is based on the same platform as the 3-series saloon. It also has the lowest centre of gravity of any BMW on sale.

By Roscoe A GOOD-SIZE crowd enjoyed a fine evening’s pool at the Terrace Bar on Amarilla Golf on Tuesday as the curtain fell on a team competition of the Oasis Fm Pool League.
The Tenerife Pool Tables Cup final had everything and it was, arguably, the match of the season. Tenerife Hammers A, chasing the double after winning the league, raced into a 3-0 lead against Phoenix Knights, taking their chances and looking set for an early night. Captain Harry dispatched Fritzel to pull one back at the first junction. In this league the line-ups are decided every four frames and, with a 3-1 advantage, everyone expected Jambo to be next out for the Hammers. But he was pushed back to frame 8, which would prove a massive error by the Hammers skipper. Andy got the ball rolling for Phoenix by taking frame five, and when Bubbles beat Fritzel it was allsquare. Penguin then dispatched Dave to give the lead back to the Hammers, only for Harry to square it again with a three-ball, wonder clearance.

TPT KO Singles draw:
Again, we all expected Jambo to play the next frame. But he was saved until last and, as it turns out, the match was decided without him. Andy stunned Penguin in a marathon frame to give the
Knights the lead for the first time, and when Dave beat Wez, the big upset was fully on. Fritzel had been
struggling all night, while Bubbles was looking ice-cool. He appeared to be in complete control, and his fine, four-ball finish was a just way to take the frame and the cup.
The cheers from the Phoenix lads and their noisy support could be heard in Torviscas. It was a remarkable comeback. There was no such fairytale for Peacocks on the other table as Palms A took the Tenerife Pool Tables Plate. Stu did give Peacocks the lead as he beat Pete in the opening frame. However, that was as good as it got. Adi, Roscoe, JT and Graham all won the next frames to show Palms’ strength in depth. Craig did pull one back against Mark and, late on, he then beat Roscoe. But it was too

little, too late. Graham sunk the winning black against Dave S, while Pete and JT won the dead
rubbers to give the final a correct 9-3 scoreline. This Tuesday, it’s the annual singles tournament - our FA Cup if you like. The
venue winners will progress to finals night on 2nd July, while the runners-up still have a chance of glory. They will enter a oneframe shoot-out to determine the last two players to make up the final eight. There are always shocks, surprises - and the table of death! This year, it seems that Peacocks (Terrace Bar, Puerto Colon) is the juicy venue. High-rankers Ashley, Adi and Penguin will all
chalk it up, with Terry, Mark, Dave and Andy also live contenders. Gaffers sees Neil and Wez squaring off, Harry starts favourite in a tricky Phoenix bar draw, while Jambo doesn’t have it easy at Inn The Pink. There are four players from Palms at Exiles Bar, along with three from Gaffers, while it’s impossible to pick a favourite at Terrace Bar. All the action starts at 8pm!

bles Knockout competition at Woodys Bar. Indeed, Tom hit three maximums and a 125 finish on the way to a last-match showdown with Bar 180 pairing Richard and Justyn. A cracking match saw both pairs missing doubles to go through, but eventually the younger men stole the show and booked their place on Finals Night. prising results (eh Bubbles?). But all credit to the home side’s Grizzly and Pete pairing, who delightedly booked their place in the final. Up at Barracuda, the Division 1 section enjoyed a cracking night, and everyone commented on the fine hospitality on offer. And there were some darts played - apparently! One pairing who battled through, despite a last-minute substitution because of
illness, were Bar 180’s father and son players Arny and Carl. They will face a couple of familiar faces from last season in the shape of Lol and Neil, from Chipeque Pool Bar. Amigos Bar, in Los Abrigos, welcomed a fine turn-out of 12 pairs for the Division 2 event, which produced a rather tasty final. Gary and Paul, of Emerald Shamrocks, beat Ian and Wayne from Bar 180 in their first
match by two legs to one. That was the only leg they lost all night as they scorched their way to the final. There, they will meet stablemates Cammy and Wez, who went one better and qualified without losing a solitary leg. Also in Los Abrigos, Phoenix Bar hosted the all-girl event. And, trust me, these ladies know how to have a good night! As usual, the games were very competitive and played in fine spirit.

Sport In Brief England’s final test
ENGLAND strolled into the Champions Trophy final with a seven-wicket win on Wednesday after South Africa underlined their reputation as cricket’s “chokers”.
Alastair’s Cook men outplayed them after electing to bowl on an overcast day at the Oval, where England had lost to the West Indies in the 2004 final. South Africa were reduced to 80-8 by the 23rd over, but a record ninth-wicket partnership of 95 between David Miller and Rory Kleinveldt gave the total some gloss. But Jonathan Trott hit 82 not out and Joe Root made 48 during a 105-run stand to help England clinch victory in the 38th over. In Sunday’s final at Edgbaston, they will meet India or Sri Lanka, who contested the other semi-final yesterday (Thursday) in an allAsian clash in Cardiff.
Lions must roar again
BRITISH and Irish Lions’ Welsh wing George North has been passed fit for the first Rugby Union Test against Australia tomorrow (Saturday) in Brisbane after missing the last two matches with a hamstring problem.
The tourists lost their 2013 unbeaten record with a 14-12 loss in Canberra on Tuesday. It was the first time a Lions side had been beaten by a provincial side since 1997, and the first time in Australia since 1971. Meanwhile, Australia look poised to field three debutants in the opening Test, with wing Israel Folau, inside-centre Christian Lealiifano and flanker Ben Mowen getting the nod.
Froome’s big Tour relief
CHRIS FROOME, Britain’s great hope for the Tour de France, which starts next Saturday (29th June), believes the absence of defending champion Sir Bradley Wiggins’s from the greatest cycle race of all comes as a “relief”. As agreed by Team Sky, Froome covered the back of Wiggins throughout last year’s Tour and ushered him to victory, while claiming second spot himself. The deal was understood to be that a grateful Wiggins would perform the same task for Froome this year, and the 28-year-old was chosen to lead Team Sky’s 2013 challenge. Yet Wiggins, 33, insisted he wanted to defend his title, only to withdraw from the Tour because of illness and injury. Kenya-born Froome, told BBC Sport: “From within the team, it’s a loss for us that we don’t have his engine in the team time-trial, and doing that support role for me in the mountains. “But from the media angle, always playing on the leadership question, that’s certainly a relief.”
