Nine-year voyage of message in a bottle! IT was just another empty wine bottle washed up by the tide, as far as Noelle McTernan was concerned.
Noelle, who regularly tidies up the small, stony inlet just down from the Aguamarina Hotel on Golf del Sur with her husband, Ray, picked it up. But as she prepared to throw the green bottle on the ever-growing pile of rubbish they had collected over the past few months, she thought she saw a stick inside the bottle. On closer inspection, she realised it was actually a rolled-up piece of paper, tied up with ribbon in a bow. Noelle then got the surprise of her life when she opened it up and discovered a genuine “message in a bottle”. It was from nine-yearold Lara Hetzel, from Bermuda - all of 2,600 miles away - who had written the message NINE years ago at the local yacht club,
where her parents were members. Noelle, who manages the Las Adelfis II hotel and holiday complex on Golf del Sur with

husband Ray, thought it was probably a practical joke - until she realised that an official document, signed by a maritime instructor,
was attached. Steve Soltysik, first mate on a 46ft powerboat, dropped the bottle overboard in the Atlantic between Bermuda and the
Azores as part of an environmental project to understand the ocean currents. He left his email address for whoever found the bottle to contact him, and yesterday (Thursday) Noelle received his reply, complete with pictures of the schoolgirls writing their messages. In the meantime, Noelle had contacted her son, Sean, who works in Canada, to put an appeal out for Lara on Facebook. Within days, he had a response through the power of social media from someone who knew her, and on Tuesday, her son posted Lara’s reply. Unfortunately Lara, now 18 and preparing to go to an American university in Connecticut, simply cannot recall the letter. But she does remember being shown around a boat at the yacht club, from which the bottle project was being organised. “It’s incredible to think that something I wrote nine years ago has managed to remain intact and has made it all the way to Spain,” she writes. And as for her brother Daniel, who was “very annoying” at that time, she says: “I get along a lot better with him than I did when I wrote the letter.” Lara goes on to say that her turtle, named
Shell, “made a dramatic escape soon after the letter”, and by then she already had a pet dog (pictured with her). She adds: “I’m still amazed that this has turned up so many years later, and it’s equally impressive that it was found by people who were willing to make the effort to figure out its origin.” As for Noelle and Ray, they are still slightly bemused by the sequence of events. Noelle said: “We go down to what we call the ‘beach’ most mornings for a walk with our dog, Toby, who likes to swim, and I normally pick up any papers or litter that has been washed in during the night. “On this particular morning (4th June), I found a green wine bottle tightly corked and knew it has been in the water for quite some time. To my great delight and excitement, I could see it was a letter tied with a ribbon, and I couldn’t wait to get home to open it and see what was inside. “When I read the letter from Lara, written on 28th May 2004 I couldn’t believe it, but Steve’s accompanying letter explained all. “We were disappointed not to receive a reply from him until yesterday. But he has now rounded up the story nicely, a month after our adventure began.”

Police hook ‘illegal’ angler
THE Guardia Civil has seized 20 kilos of fish in the Los Silos area from a 59-old-fisherman who was said to have caught them illegally in a special area. Fishing is not allowed there every day and the fisherman, who had no licence, was using a spear on a non-permitted day.
Robin Hood’s Ryanair coup
RYANAIR will be flying from Yorkshire’s Robin Hood airport to Tenerife this winter. The weekly service will begin in October. There will also be the reintroduction of a weekly flight to Bournemouth. Paul Knight, Bournemouth Airport’s Managing Director, said: “Ryanair has always performed strongly at Bournemouth, so we are delighted that they are extending their summer schedule into winter. “These extra flights will not only benefit our local passengers but will attract extra traffic from our wider catchment area as we look to increase passenger numbers and serve the South Coast market better in the winter season.”
The 2m idle young breed
THE percentage of Spanish youths aged 15-29 who neither work nor study continues to grow, and remains among the highest rates of all developed countries. This year, the figure reached 24.4% (almost two million people), according to the 2013 Education at a Glance report, presented by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The findings point to a 69% increase in the percentage of young Spaniards with at least a professional training certificate or university degree who neither study nor work. This statistic contrasts sharply with the stereotype of a young, rebellious nini (a Spanish youth who neither works nor studies) who has opted to leave school early, thus limiting his/her chances of employment.
The desperate discounters
El Medano flying the flag THE municipality of Granadilla de Abona opens for the summer season with over 80% occupancy and new facilities in the form of a new-look tourist office in the seaside resort of El Medano.
The facilities are now much more central and closer to the residents and visitors on the coast. The new office was opened by Granadilla
Mayor, Jaime Gonzalez Cejas and Vice President and Minister of Tourism of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Carlos Alonso, the Councillor for Tourism, Nuria Delgado Hernandez, the CEO of Tourism Tenerife, Miguel Angel Santos, the Minister of Environment island, Ana Lupe Mora , the president of Ashotel, Jorge Marichal, local government representatives and the CITSUR also associations of businessmen and traders, among others. The Mayor explained that the new office, “aims to improve the provision of this service
to the citizens and tourists in general, and also occurs in response to sector demand the restoration of the area and residents. After the reform and the refurbishment of the premises, the office is better located, thus enriching the service from the point of view of tourism.” Carlos Alonso congratulated the municipality on this resource, as this enhances the network of tourist offices in Tenerife, highlighting that El Medano is in the top ten in the island receiving around 20,000 requests for information. Jorge Marichal said
that the forecast for this summer period is “optimistic” with many English, Russian, and also Germans visiting. He added that, specifically, in El Medano, occupation right now is 80%, and the figure will increase as the summer develops, so that “it’s good news for tourism, for merchants and for our economy, “he said. During the event two blue quality flags were hoisted for the beaches of La Jaquita and El Medano. The beaches cope with between 3,000 and 5,000 people a day in high season.
Fishing for gold again FOR the third year running, World Championship fishing will be staged from the San Miguel Marina on Thursday for three days, featuring a qualifying round of the Torneo Bertram event, involving 25 boats.
DISCOUNTS of up to 50% are being seen in some Spanish shops as retailers stage sales in an attempt to kick-start the economy. The average resident will spend a total of 50 euros in the sales, according to analysts. But the Federation of Independent Consumers (FUCI) puts this at 72 euros, which is a 20% increase on last year’s 60 euros-a-head spenders. Retailers have experienced 35 consecutive months of consistent declining sales.

IS scorchio a word, do we think? The term is in the urban dictionary and was originally used to describe Spanish weather in the Fast Show’s Channel 9 sketch. It was always “scorchio” (accompanied by the appropriate symbol of a sun). Anyway, it describes the weather currently heading our way. According to the Spanish Met Office AEMET, the month of June was the coolest on record. But it now looks like we’re going to pay for it, with temperatures rising on the mainland to between 38-40 degrees celsius in the shade. Spain as a whole is predicted to be hotter than normal throughout July, and rainfall is meant to be normal. So that means we won’t see any rain for a few months. But if my memory serves me correctly, over the past decade it has always rained for one day in Tenerife during August. Interestingly, AEMET began keeping temperature records way back in 1971.
Here in Tenerife in the coming week, the mercury is set to rise from the weekend. This may trigger again a “yellow” weather warning, with activities taking place in the mountainous forest areas being prohibited. Temperatures here are expected to be around 35º from Tuesday, but you’ll feel the increase from the weekend as the weather front from the Sahara begins to reach us. The heatwave is anticipated to be with us for a while, so a little common sense is needed in relation to your daily routine and general well-being. You may experience a loss of appetite, so drink plenty of water, remain in shady areas, keep sun blinds down during the day, open windows at night, wear light clothing, do not leave children, pets or the elderly waiting in a car. And don’t forget that your pets need to stay in the cool - and keep them hydrated! Slip, slop, slap - as they say. Until next week

TRUNK CALL: San Miguel Mayor Valentín González Evora (dark suit) keeps up with Swedish tradition by cutting a log from a birch tree, watched by IKEA’s Tony Tavira (white shirt) on right and Juan José Cabello on left. And standing on the podium behind the Mayor is Belén Martin Padrón, the company’s Marketing Manager in the Spanish Islands & the Caribbean
S H O P P E R S can’t get enough of IKEA’s new customer service centre in Las Chafiras, which opened last Friday.
The Pick up Point store, complete with assorted samples of the Swedish company’s goods on offer, has been inundated with customers. Catalogues flew out in next to no time and by Monday, there wasn’t one left as the crowds continued to grow. Disciples of IKEA here in the South have long protested at the journey they were forced to make up North, and questioned why the company did not open up in the South. Their wish has now been granted and, said one young assistant: “That’s why we are all smiling so much. We never expected such a rush of people and we are all delighted. “Yes, we are out of catalogues for the time being, but you can browse on-line in the store at our numerous touch-screen kiosks.” Canarian Weekly were invited to the official opening which took place last Friday with San Miguel Mayor Valentín González present,
accompanied by colleagues from the Ayuntamiento. Also in attendance were IKEA’s Tony Tavira, General Manager for the Canarian & Balearic Islands and the Caribbean, plus Juan José Cabello Manager of the company’s store in Santa Cruz store. It is a Swedish tradition that when an establishment is opened officially, it is considered good luck to cut a birch tree trunk rather than a ribbon! And Mayor González agreed to participate in this unusual tradition, together with the leading IKEA officials in the
Canaries. The dignitaries were then invited to a typical Swedish breakfast. By this time, a queue had formed outside the store, all hoping to get a good look inside. And by the end of the day, more than 2,000 people had given IKEA the best possible Las Chafiras baptism! The company has since thanked the Mayor and San Miguel town hall for their genuine interest in the project, and their wholehearted support. The first step to introducing the company in the South began a few months ago, with online purchases available through the website www.islas.IKEA.es And now there is a physical Pick up Point, just along from the Las Chafiras ferreteria on the San Miguel side of the main roundabout and visible from
the motorway. A Pick up Point is not a traditional IKEA store with direct sales. Instead, it is a centre where goods purchased through the website or at the same Pick up Point store are delivered. It has been designed for buying through in-house, touch-screen kiosks, but also has specialised sales people so that customers are able to make any purchase with their help. All goods displayed in the store - around 25% of IKEA’s stock in the North - are samples only and cannot be bought there and then. But purchases made before 10pm will be ready for collection the next afternoon. And the store opens 12 hours a day, from 10am10pm, which gives customers a big window in which to browse around the bright, spacious store.

the sector. Why an EHIC is essential THE British Embassy is urging Tenerife Expats to remind their visitors this summer to make sure they’ve got a European Health Insurance Card with them.
It’s an absolute must, and an Embassy spokesman says: “It should be tem No1 on their checklist. “It’s also known as an EHIC, and this simple piece of plastic entitles the holder to all medically-necessary treatment during a temporary stay in Tenerife and Spain. It’s easy to get - check out www.ehic.org.uk - and it costs nothing.
Page 8
“Although most people’s trips are trouble-free, things can go wrong. An EHIC will provide peace of mind in case people need to see a doctor. “It will help to ensure they don’t take home a big hospital bill should
they need medical care.” Comprehensive travel insurance is the second vital item on a visitor’s packing list. It covers all the extras not provided by an EHIC, such as repatriation in the case of medical emergency. If a visiting friend or
family member is taken into hospital, an EHIC is enough to cover someone until he or she is well enough to travel home. Should people taking out travel insurance have a pre-existing medical condition, then you must remind them to declare it. If they don’t, the insurer may well invalidate the policy. “You won’t fool them, but they may make a fool of you,” adds the Embassy spokesman. Every year, Consular staff in Tenerife and mainland Spain are asked to assist hundreds of Britons who have failed to take out travel insurance. Either that, or they have invalidated their policies and are left facing huge bills when attending a private clinic or hospital. However, visitors should be aware that they do not have to provide travel insurance as payment for medically-necessary treatment in a public or state healthcare facility. They should insist that their EHIC is accepted. Anyone asked to sign a form or disclaimer in a state hospital should check that they are not forfeiting the right to be treated under an EHIC. If an EHIC is refused. or people have other concerns about using an EHIC while over here, they should call the Department of Health team at the British Consulate, on 902 109 356. A visitor who needs to see a doctor and doesn’t have an EHIC with him/her can also get a Provisional R e p l a c e m e n t Certificate from the Overseas Healthcare Team in Newcastle, on +44 191 218 1999. To apply for an EHIC, go to www.ehic.org. uk - and visit www. healthcareinspain.eu for more information on EHIC entitlements.
Charmaine taking good Consulate care of us all
CHARMAINE ARBOUIN has been appointed as British Consul for the Consulates covering the Canary Islands and Andalucia.

She has more than 20 years’ experience of managing people and resources in the public and not-for-profit sectors, and has a degree in Hispanic Studies from the University of Hull. A set of new EU limits have been introduced that lower the amount mobile phone providers can charge for making or receiving calls abroad, or accessing the internet. The new lower price caps for mobile roaming took effect
from Monday 1st July. From this date the European Union’s Roaming Regulation will lower the price caps for data downloads by 36%, making it much cheaper to use maps, watch videos, check emails and update social networks while travelling across the EU. Data roaming will now be up to 91% cheaper in 2013 compared to 2007. During this period the volume of the data roaming
market has grown 630%. These two trends mean both consumers and mobile operators have significant new opportunities thanks to EU efforts. The EU has achieved retail price reductions across calls, SMS and data of over 80% since 2007. Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes said: “The EU has to be relevant to people’s lives. The latest price cuts put more money in your pocket for summer,
and are a critical step towards getting rid of these premiums once and for all. This is good for both consumers and companies, because it takes fear out of the market, and it grows the market. Operators are free to offer cheaper rates, and some have already begun to remove roaming premiums altogether for voice and SMS, or offer a roamingfree area region across one section of Europe or another.

ALL of us dislike looking older but, unfortunately, it tends to creep up on us all! So how would you like to hold back ageing, or even turn back time?
Galvanic spas have been around for years, but the size of the equipment needed meant that it was reserved for use in spas and beauty parlours, and was, inevitably expensive. Sophia Loren is known for having weekly galvanic spa treatments all her life, so that’s not a bad recommendation! New technology now
means that the power of these galvanic spas can be harnessed in a small, hand-held device, which you can buy for home use. It is completely painless, and uses small electrical currents to push negatively and positively-charged gels deep into the skin to cellular level. Three treatments a week for 10 minutes each time (all in the comfort of your own home) leads to a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, a plumping of the skin to more youthful levels and a generally fresher and younger appearance. The results are visible after just one ses-
sion, but optimum improvement is reached in about 3-4 months. As you can see from the photos, the improvement is gradual. It’s still you, but younger! And, of course, the beauty of it (excuse the pun) is that once you have the machine, you can maintain this improvement indefinitely. Most people will know Gill Peers and me from our furniture business, but we are very excited about our new, additional venture. And so willing am I to prove that it works, that I have treated half of my face only, so that the improvement can be measured. I draw the line at printing a picture of myself
here, but if you bump into me, have a look, and you will be amazed at the difference in just three months! We are holding a free demo at the Extreme Gym in Las Chafiras on Saturday, 13th July at 4pm, where we will also be demonstrating the more powerful Galvanic Body spa, that can rapidly and dramatically reduce “batwings” and cellulite, which can be so hard to get rid of, however hard you diet or work out. For more information, give Agefix a ring on 649 498 320, look on www. facebook.com/agefix, or come along to the Extreme Gym on the 13th for a free, no-obligation demo.

DJ Steve Lawler is live at El Faro On Saturday 20th July, two young promoters working together for the first time, with the same purpose: “TO CREATE AND SHARE A HIGH QUALITY HOUSE PARTY!”
Lo Squalo Events and Onemore London are proud to present global superstar DJ Steve Lawler live at El Faro, with Antonio de Angelis (children of tomorrow, gynoid audio), Outart, Cristian Sirica (H.Q.H.P.), and El Faro resident Jacobo Padilla. Steve Lawler needs no introduction, but he certainly warrants
Page 12
one. You would be hard pushed to find a more in-form, in-demand, exceptionally talented
artist, regarded as highly by his industry peers as he is by his huge global base of
musically educated fans. A child of the acid house generation, Steve has been busy with the beats long before genres were but a twinkle in clubland’s eye. An electronic artist who defies generic boundaries, ever since his days organising the infamous motorway raves back in the early 90’s underneath the M42 motor way, in the UK! As an Artist his releases & re-mixes have been signed by some of the worlds most established Recording labels, R&S Records, Systematic, Drumcode, Harthouse, Cocoon, MBF, OVUM, Sci+Tec, Tsuba, Souvenir, Rekids, Boxer Sport, Be As One, Monique, Kostbar, Soma, Skint and of course his own recording label VIVa MUSiC. Steve’s label VIVa MUSC (founded in 2006), has quickly earnt him a reputation for breaking new talent and has featured tracks by such artists as Reboot, Simon Baker, Jamie Jones, Davide Squillace, Luca Bacchetti, Bushwacka, Livio & Roby, Dragosh, Leon, Plasmik, Ripperton, ilario Alicante, John Selway, Peace
Division, Bearweasel, Tiefschwarz and of course Lawler himself amongst many others, and receives heavy patronage by many House & Techno luminaries. As for A&R, just ask artists like Simon Baker, Leon, Bearweasel and Livio & Roby and they’ll tell you all about the support, encouragement and opportunities Lawler has given them. VIVa MUSiC works as a culmination of everything that’s gone before; from the putting on the aforementioned illegal raves, to his residency at super club Cream back in the mid 90’s. He’s remixed high profile artists such as Jamelia, Dido and Justin Timberlake and worked with many of the worlds renowned dance imprints. As well as recording a track for the blockbuster horror movie by Ian Softly ‘The Skeleton Key’. He’s released some of the industry’s most collectable mix series such as the ‘Dark Drums’, ‘Lights Out’ and, most recently, the ‘VIVa’ series. Now on its 3rd release, the ‘VIVa’ series has revealed Steve’s widescreen vision better than any mix before with down tempo and deep house
playing a big part in the beat blend. Steve held a triumphant residency for nine years at the Balearic club Space in Ibiza (a club he returned back to in 2008). Bernie Nolan dies at 52 BERNIE NOLAN, one of the famous Irish family of singers, and an actress, has died at the age of 52 after a long battle with cancer.
The former lead vocalist of The Nolans was told in 2010 that she was clear of breast cancer. But last year she discovered it had spread to her brain, lungs, liver and bones. A family spokeswoman said yesterday (Thursday): “Bernie passed away peacefully this morning with all of her family around her. “The entire family are devastated to have lost beloved Bernie, a wonderful wife, adoring mother and loving sister; she is irreplaceable. Bernie shot to stardom with her singing sisters, and the group are best known for their 1979 hit I’m In The Mood For Dancing, which sold millions of records around the world. The Nolans also
enjoyed success with songs such as Don’t Make Waves, Attention To Me and Gotta Pull Myself Together. They became huge in Japan, where they are said to have sold more records than The Beatles. They also supported Frank Sinatra on the European leg of his

world tour. Bernie was born in Ireland and grew up performing with her singing parents and eight siblings in pubs and clubs at night as a family troupe. She once said: “It got to the stage where they didn’t talk about whether the new baby was going to be a boy
or a girl, but whether it could sing.” Bernie quit The Nolans in 1994 to focus on her solo career, but the group reunited in 2009, and enjoyed a sellout UK reunion tour. But it led to a dispute with two of the sisters, Denise and Anne, who had been excluded.
Siblings Coleen, Bernie, Maureen and Linda said that the record company made the decision. Bernie, who gave birth to her daughter, Erin, in 1999, also enjoyed an acting career, with credits included Diane Murray in Channel 4 soap Brookside, and
Sheelagh Murphy in ITV police drama The Bill. She took part in Channel 4 series The Games and ITV’s Popstar to Operastar, and on the Saturday morning children’s show On The Waterfront in 1988. On stage, Nolan performed in Blood Brothers, Flashdance The Musical and the UK tour of Chicago The Musical in 2012 - and a touring production of Calendar Girls. Bernie, who married drummer Steve Doneathy in 1996 and whose first daughter Kate was born still-born in 1997, was the third Nolan sister to have cancer. In an interview last year, she told Hello! magazine she felt “a weight has been lifted” after she went public about her illness. She added: “There’s no point dwelling on it - I’ve got to fight it, be positive and get on with it. I say a positive mantra to myself every day.’

Madeleine search is back on... BRITISH police are launching a new probe into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann six years ago in Portugal.
And her parents, Kate and Gerry, “warmly welcome” the new inquiry after years of agonising about their loss. .Madeleine was three when she vanished from her bedroom in the Praia da Luz restort as Kate and Gerry dined with friends nearby. An international hunt for her failed to utrn up any concrete evidence, although there were lots of “sightings” of her, which all proved fruitless. A Met Police review has identified 38 “persons of interest” who detectives want to speak to in relation to the suspected abduction in 2007, which is almost twice as many as previously thought. Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood, heading the inquiry, de-
scribes it as “a critical moment” in the hunt for Madeleine. “We have been in a unique position over the last two years in drawing together three strands: Portuguese, UK and private investigators’ material,” he said. “From the vast quantity of material analysed, we have identified 38 persons of interest and 12 who are UK nationals, and it is from that position that we are able to move from review to investigation.” He added encouragingly: “There is no clear, definitive proof that Madeleine McCann is dead.” The Met will apply to issue formal requests to Portugal for evidence to be gathered, and to allow a team of British officers to be present dur-
ing the process. The working relationship between UK and Portuguese police is now said to be “positive
and focused” and, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, both countries are working on the assumption that Made-
leine may still be alive. “On that basis, I genuinely believe there is a possibility she is still alive,” said DCI Red-
wood. “And so I would like to ask the public to continue to look for her.” The local police investigation was called off a year after Madeleine’s abduction, yielding few clues. The Met launched its review of the case in 2011 and, earlier this year, the Home Office said it was prepared to fund any continuing investigation. TheMet has made 16 visits to Portugal, and officers have met and shared their findings with key members of both the Policia Judiciaria and the judicial authorities. A spokesman for the McCanns said: “Kate and Gerry warmly welcome the shift in the Met’s emphasis, from review to investigation. “It is clearly a big step forward in establishing what happened and, hopefully, towards bringing whoever is responsible for Madeleine’s abduction to justice.”
International survey reveals travellers’ dream airport A CINEMA is the most-wanted airport facility, a global survey of more than 10,000 travellers has revealed.
SKYSCANNER asked people what they would most like to see in an airport, with options ranging from a gym to a beach. Worried that their travel plans may prevent them catching the latest blockbusters, a huge 49% of flyers chose a cinema as their dream airport wish, our survey revealed. ‘Sleep pods’ were the second most popular ‘dream airport’ facility, with over a third of respondents voting for a place to lay their heads and catch up on the Zs when flying from A to B, or C. Despite the rise of e-books, the traditional
Page 14
paperback is clearly still a popular choice among air travellers, as 32% of respondents said they’d love an airport library, making it the third most wanted airport facility. An inairport library would let holidaymakers immerse themselves in a novel by the pool, then simply return it after landing back home. A huge 31% of flyers voted for a green outdoor area in their dream airport. A park would no doubt offer a welcome change of environment, especially for those waiting for
connecting flights. Nearly one in three voted for a vanity area offering salon and spa treatments, so they could pamper themselves with last minute massages, manicures and haircuts. Some of the more unlikely facilities to feature at a dream airport include a gym, with 15% of flyers longing for a last chance at toning their ‘holiday body’ and a karaoke area, with 5% of travellers wishing to kill time and a song. Top 10 most wanted features: 1. Cinema – 49% 2. Sleep pod – 36% 3. Library – 32% 4. Park – 31% 5. Vanity area – 30% 6. Kids play area – 21% 7. Pool – 20% 8. Gym – 15% 9. Man-made beach – 12% 10. Foreign visitors may find it really unhealthy in UK
FOREIGNERS using the socalled health tourism ticket will be in for nasty shock when the NHS puts its hand out for payment. Overseas visitors face being charged around £200-a-year for using the NHS in an attempt to put off those seeking free treatment. Ministers will outline plans to introduce the charge for foreign workers and students who come to the UK for more than half a year. The Department of Health says it will ensure that migrants contribute towards healthcare costs without add-
ing to the NHS red tape. A public consultation will be launched about the move, which would form part of a raft of changes to immigration laws. Foreigners could be given a temporary NHS number, which would flag up to the system that they should pay for treatment. Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt told Sky News: “Hard-working British families pay their taxes for the NHS, and we think that people coming from overseas should make some contribution as well. “At the moment, we don’t track properly who should be paying and who shouldn’t, and it results in costing British taxpayers a lot of money.”
Mr Hunt rejected claims that the £200levy was too low, suggesting it could raise £100m, which would pay for 1,000 GPs. He added: “We have been clear that we are a national health service - not an international health service - and I am determined to wipe out abuse in the system. “The NHS is a national treasure, and we need to work with the entire health system to develop plans and make sure it is sustainable for years to come.” Mr Hunt will also outline plans to end free access to GPs for shortterm visitors, and he will pledge to cut the bill for treating tourists, which currently stands at £200m. Yet he has already
made clear foreign patients would not be refused treatment in an emergency and, in those cases, efforts to recoup the money would be made later. The changes are part of a Government-wide push to cut down on abuse of British services, but doctors fear they will become a “form of immigration control”. Clare Gerada, chair of the Council of the Royal College of General Practitioners, said: “I don’t think we should be turning the GP surgery into a border agency.” She also warned that immigrants with highlyinfectious conditions could end up “wandering around for fear of being charged”, or going to more expensive emergency units, which
could cost more. And she accused the Government of failing to “find the facts” about the actual cost of NHS use by immigrants and launching a “rushed consultation”. Earlier this year, Prime Minister David Cameron said immigrants could not expect “something for nothing” in the UK. But Shadow Health Minister Liz Kendall said: “In its three years in power, the Government has a poor record on announcing policies that sound good, but prove to be completely unworkable. “We will have many questions to ask about the details when they are published, but the key tests for their proposals are: can they be
properly enforced and will they save more money than they cost to put in place?” Shadow Public Health Minister Diane Abbott suggested in Twitter post that the Government was being xenophobic. “What price xenophobia? Stigmatising foreigners accessing NHS creates a public health risk,” she wrote. “Stigmatising foreigners accessing NHS will undermine years of work to encourage atrisk groups to access HIV testing.” Downing Street said Mr Cameron “emphatically rejects” her claims, his official spokesman insisting: “This is about fairness,” and pointed out the exemption on public health grounds.
Egypt’s financial meltdown EGYPT’S political crisis has stoked renewed fears for the country’s faltering economy because investors and tourists are, literally, running for cover. British tour operators have up to 25,000 UK citizens in Egypt right now, and at least 1,000 are staying in the volatile Luxor and Cairo areas, according to travel association Abta. Sky News was told by Abta that companies have made arrangements to get those customers out of the country, with Thomson the latest to effectively evacuate guests as the coup to oust President
Page 16
Mohamed Morsi unfolded. Abta said the vast majority of UK tourists were in the Red Sea resorts, such as Sharm el Sheikh, which were excluded from the latest Foreign Office guidance advising against travel to most areas of Egypt. Major gripes behind the protests against Morsi concerned the rising unemployment and prices Holiday-makers booked to travel to the capital and other potential flashpoints can receive full refunds from operators or re-book. While Egypt’s instability has led to holiday
prices being pegged back, the country simply cannot afford the tourism industry to take a greater hit from political turmoil because of the perilous state of its economy. Tourism, which makes up more than 10% of Egypt’s entire economic output, had already been hurt by the threat from terrorism in the wake of the 1997 Luxor massacre, and subsequent2005 bombings in Sharm el Sheikh. But Abta spoke of “resilient” UK tourist numbers in Egypt, since 2011, and especially in the sea resorts.
But the fundamental problem in a country of 80 million people has been Egypt’s inability to improve the prospects of ordinary citizens. After all, its GDP growth was measured at an annual rate of more than 5% in the first quarter of the year. But in reality, the proceeds are not reaching the workforce. Half the working population are now said to be gripped by poverty, earning less than £1.30 a day. The economic machine, weakening at the time of President Hosni Mubarak’s downfall in 2011, has
deteriorated further under Morsi, who was forced to borrow to make up for rising costs and risk-averse, international private investors. Research by Barclays shows unemployment at 13.2% after the first quarter of the year from 8.9% at the beginning of 2011. Inflation was running at 8% in April, while investment was down 10% in the first three months, with Egypt’s external debt rising almost 30% to £30bn over one year. Negotiations on an International Monetary Fund loan stalled,
and the protracted discussions meant Morsi was forced to take money instead from countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar to help pay for subsidies on food, fuel and higher debt bills. The cost of servicing its debts means Egypt’s cash reserves are bleeding - more than halving from £22bn before Mubarak’s demise to £10.5bn in May. The IMF has urged Egypt to raise taxes and cut spending but they are measures an angry population, never mind a new government, just cannot afford.

Shorter school hols wont please pupils BRITAIN’S State schools will be allowed to set their own term times, under plans which could end to pupils’ traditional six-week summer break.
The new Deregulation Bill, if passed, would mean local councils could no longer be able to tell their schools when terms should start and end. It would also pave the way for individual schools to introduce longer terms and shorten the length of school holidays. The proposal came just weeks after Education Secretary Michael Gove suggested the current school year was out of date and that children should have
shorter holidays. Under the present system, state school pupils usually get two weeks off at Christmas and Easter, six weeks in the summer, plus three week-long half-term breaks. And school days usually run from around 9am
to 3-3.30pm. If the proposals are passed, the changes affecting local authority-run schools would take effect from September 2015. Mr Gove says shorter school days and term times harm British pupils, although Academies and free schools
- which are semi-independent schools not under council control - are already free to set their own term dates. All state schools will still be required to open for at least 190 days of the year, says the Department for Education (DfE).
But the proposal is expected to face opposition from some teaching unions, who argue that teachers and pupils already spend long hours in the classroom. A DfE spokesman said: “Heads and teachers know their parents and pupils best, and not local authorities. So it is right that all schools are free to set their own term dates, in the interests of parents and pupils.” Brian Lightman, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), said: “Deregulation shouldn’t be a major issue as a large proportion of schools already have the ability to set their own term dates. “Most schools choose to follow the local authority calendar because they know it’s
better for parents with children in different schools, and teachers who want their holidays to coincide with those of their own children.” He added: “The problem will come if no one is responsible for creating a co-ordinated calendar for an area and it turns into a free-for-all. “Somebody needs to take the lead locally on deciding term dates, and it makes sense for this to be the local authority, even if schools aren’t required by law to follow it.” Mr Gove, in a speech in April, called for longer school days and term times, claiming pupils were at a “significant handicap” compared with youngsters in East Asian nations, who benefit from extra tuition and support from teachers.
Female acrobat’s tragic cirque fall
A FRENCH Cirque du Soleil acrobat died after falling 50ft from a safety wire during a show in Las Vegas.
Sarah Guyard-Guillot, a 31-year-old Paris-born mother of two, was pronounced dead in hospital late on Saturday night. Witnesses said the fatal accident happened near the end of the MGM Grand show. Spectator Dan Mosqueda said she was being hoisted up the side of the stage when she appeared to slip free
of her safety wire and plummeted to an open pit below the stage. “Initially, a lot of people in the audience thought it was part of the show,” he said. “But you could hear screaming, then groaning, and we could hear a female artist crying from the stage.” The show continued momentarily, then stopped, and minutes later the crowd was dispersed. Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte issued a statement paying tribute to the acrobat, who had been with the com-

We are all completely devastated with this news. “We are reminded with great humility and respect how extraordinary our artists are, each and every night.” The accident happened while top Cirque executives, including president Daniel Lamarre, were in Las Vegas to celebrate the premiere of a new show, Michael Jackson One, at the Mandalay Bay resort.

Kids’ Dream Holidays come true A GROUP of special needs and disadvantaged children and their carers assembled at the South Airport bound for England last Friday.
They were heading for the Haven Holiday Centre in Burnham on Sea, Somerset, with a week of activities and fun ahead of them, courtesy of Tenerife Sur Lions Club’s annual “Dream Holidays” project. This week, the kids visited the local RNLI lifeboat and hovercraft stations and also enjoyed
trips to Longleat Safari and Adventure Park, plus the Cheddar Gorge Caves. The Secret World Wildlife Rescue centre, at
Highbridge, Somerset, where they had a handson encounter with some of the many wild animals being cared for there, also enthralled
them. Their busy, action-filled week included a ride on the West Somerset steam train, together with shopping trips, picnics, a fun fair

And a special thankyou goes to the staff at Rumours Bar in Los Cristianos, who raised a staggering 1,560 euros through their various fund-raising initiatives. A week earlier, at Tenerife Sur Lions’ annual President’s Night, Norman Goodall MBE agreed to maintain his position at the head of the organisation. The Gala Dinner took place at Hotel Paradise Park, Los Cristianos, and Guest of Honour was Canaries’ British Vice Consul Helen Keating, and her husband, Antonio. Norman (above right), accompanied by his wife, Edna, made Presidential Apppreciation awards to various club members and, in his ad-
dress, he referred to the Holiday scheme, saying: “We have majored on our “Dream Holidays” and will continue to do so.” He added: “Our charitable work has been called on in so many ways, and we are working closely with the three local Town Hall Social Services departments, who refer people in need to us for assistance in improving their daily lives. “When hard times arrive, it is often the younger members of the community who forego their aspirations and dreams. “With this in mind, we are looking at ways of creating a Tenerife Sur Lions Scholarship to enable a particularly bright student to undertake a university degree course, who, without financial support, could not realise his/her potential or dream.”

Adventures and recent winners of Trip Advisor’s 2013 Certificate of Excellence. They were fantastic hosts and, along with Sally from Tenerife Angels, let us use their horses for pony rides and horse-and-cart rides, which generated 165 euros. Midge helped an overwhelmed Suzy q with keeping everyone fed, and Bob, from Tenerife Angels, manned the bar
and provided a load of mouth-watering mojito. In all, we raised 570 euros, so Katie’s needs are covered for the next few months, when our shops are traditionally quiet. It was lovely to see children interacting with animals rather than tablets and mp3 players, and we think they, too, enjoyed the experience. We plan to repeat the event because of popular demand, so watch this space. Katie now has sponsorship of 110 euros per month, so we are well on the way to financing her independently. If you would like to be a sponsor, call Sue on 629 399 102 for more information. And please visit her. She doesn’t
walk well because of her laminitus and needs mental stimulation. The stables are open from 10am-2pm, and from 4-8 daily except Mondays, and you will be made welcome. Don’t forget to bring a carrot or two. Puppies for adoption We inherited four cute pups this week, all males of small-to-medium size. The adoption fee for a male dog is 110 euros, which includes all vaccinations, chip and sterilisation when the dog is old enough. We don’t expect these to be in need of a home for long, so call Sue on 629 388 102 as soon as possible if you would like one. Happy shopping Come and browse in our charity shops at Los Cristianos, Calle Reveron, near the

It will give all our supporters and friends a chance to bring a little ray of sunshine to the many dogs at the shelter. Firstly, you will be given a dog of your choice for a few hours, and you can take it for a leisurely stroll down to the sea, or for a gentle walk around the refuge grounds. You will then learn how to give the dog a good groom, or maybe join it for a swim in the recently-built doggie swimming pool. Or maybe even try your hand at the dogs’ agility fun course. So many of the dogs have spent several years at the refuge, so what better way to brighten their day than pampering them? Maybe one or two will be lucky enough to
find a new home! More details of the event will follow shortly and meanwhile, we have so many puppies at the refuge who need rehoming, so perhaps you’d like to come along and have a look for that special little friend. And we always need toys, collars, leads, towels, blankets and sheets for the inmates, so if you would like to donate any spare items, then please ring 922 778 630 or contact us at teneriffa@ aktiontier.org Marion Gonzalez runs the refuge and can be contacted or faxed on that number. Iberia, the internet high-flyers IBERIA, Spain’s largest airline, is to introduce Wi-Fi access to passengers on long-haul flights.
The Airbus A330 and A340 will include internet access at five euros for 5MB, which is one of the more expensive, in-flight Wi-Fi services. But the facility is still hard to find among airlines generalyl and is a huge step forward in for Iberia in Europe. Other modern services from Iberia in the near future include a new social network site, a personalised “app” for Smartphones, a brand-new user-friendly website with a much cleaner layout, and easy connections to Facebook and LinkedIn. This system, called “social seating” by the airline, even allows travellers to choose passengers to sit next to using their Facebook or LinkedIn profiles, following in the footsteps of Dutch airline KLM. The website also features an “inspirational search engine”, which allows users to describe their interests when travelling - such as relaxation, shopping, beach holidays, culture and history, countryside, adventure or sports. They will also be given suggestions for possible destinations, which can be filtered by price and include a downloadable travel guide. Iberia’s Wi-Fi service will be gradually rolled out over a two-year period, although the first aircraft with the facility will take off in the next few weeks.
Grunt if you just don’t like cabbies IF you’ve ever experienced it, you will know that driving in Paris or Rome is an absolute nightmare at the best of times. But it seems that taking a taxi instead is not a lot better - and cabbies in those two iconic capitals have been rated the rudest by British holiday-makers, in answer to a poll conducted by airporttransfers.co.uk. Taxi drivers in Ibiza capital San Antonio are hardly the politest either, according to the survey. Oh, and avoid those in Dubai and in Majorca’s Magaluf. But cab drivers in our own Playa de Las Americas are among
Page 20
others who more than make up for them with their natural charm and helpfulness. The survey, based on responses from 2,162 UK holiday-makers who had taken an overseas holiday in the last 12 months, revealed that the friendliest taxi drivers are in Pefkos, on the Greek island of Rhodes, and in the Turkish resort of Marmaris. And as well as Las Americas, other polite cabbies can be found in New York City and in Palma Nova, Majorca. When asked what they thought made a taxi driver “friendly”, 86% agreed it was a “talkative one, while 42% also said a friendly taxi driver was someone who would happily
dispense his or her advice and knowledge of the local area. A cabbie, maintained 51% of those questioned, was an “unhelpful” one who simply couldn’t be bothered to respond to questions. Chris Clarkson, managing director of Airporttransfers.co.uk, said: “Taxi-rides around the world can be totally different experiences, depending on the time and the place. “You could stumble upon the most helpful taxi driver in the world, who gives you a guided tour of the area you’re in on the way to your end destination. “Or you could have someone who just grunts in response to anything you say.”
Premier Inns are shrinking THE Premier Inn chain is planning to open a revolutionary, mini-version of its hotels in British cities, controlled by an online app.
Rooms, mostly with windows, will be smaller than the area of three table tennis tables. And says owners Whitbread, they will be known as “hubs”. The initial launch will take place in London next summer, followed by another in Edinburgh. Whitbread promise the new rooms - just 11sqm - will offer “good value for money and appeal
to customers who value price, location and design over space”. Prices are expected to be up to 30% cheaper than the current cost of a Premier Inn room in central London. Features of the new concept room included a desk twhich folds into a pocket-sprung bed, an en-suite bathroom with power shower, free wifi and a 40in smart-screen TV. An app can control orders for meals and even the temperature of the room The hub will be the UK’s first hotel with its own app, letting customers control their entire experience there. It will enable
customers to book and check-in online, as well as pre-select room temperature and light settings. Meals or drinks can also be ordered via the app. Guests can choose which TV or radio channel they want playing in their room when they arrive, and stream content from their phone or tablet direct to their TV. Patrick Dempsey, managing director of Whitbread Hotels and Restaurants, said: “Hub will work in tandem with Premier Inn, appealing to more price-sensitive customers seeking quality accommodation in the heart of a city.”

Bitterly divided by politics and religion for centuries, this is the infamous story of how Scotland and England came together in 1707 to form Great Britain. Over time the Union matured into one of the longest in European history, but it very nearly ended in divorce. Exploiting the Union's unpopularity, the exiled Stuarts staged several comebacks, selling themselves as a credible and liberal alternative to the Hanoverian regime. Neil Oliver reveals just how close they came to succeeding.
Eddie Izzard, Michael Palin and Harry Potter director Mike Newell are among those paying tribute to a true comic genius, a man who blasted his way through six decades of British comedy with his unique brand of surreal, classless humour.

German Grand Prix BBC1, 18.00 Suzi Perry introduces the best of the action and reaction from the Nürburgring, the ninth stop of the 19-race calendar. Fernando Alonso won last year’s German Grand Prix at Hockenheim with a controlled and measured drive from pole position. The assured Spaniard came under pressure from both Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button but never faltered as he recorded his 30th career victory. Roared on by his country folk, Vettel initially took the chequered flag in second place but was ultimately relegated to fifth for illegally passing Button. The Briton was therefore promoted to second with Kimi Raikkonen completing the podium in third. Lewis Hamilton won the last Grand Prix held at the Nürburgring in 2011. The Brit made a fine start to take the lead but still had to conjure up several daring overtaking manoeuvres to secure a memorable win. Commentary on this year’s race comes from Ben Edwards and David Coulthard.
Men's Final. Sue Barker introduces live coverage of the eagerly-awaited men's final from the All England Club. 128 men took to the hallowed Wimbledon grass with hopes of becoming 2013 men's singles champion, but that dream is still alive for just two players. Twelve months ago Andy Murray became the first Britain for 76 years to make the Wimbledon men's final, but it was the great Roger Federer who ultimately went on to secure his record-equalling seventh title at SW19, seeing off Murray in four sets. Whose turn will it be this year?

Roared on by his country folk, Vettel initially took the chequered flag in second place but was ultimately relegated to fifth for illegally passing Button. The Briton was therefore promoted to second, with Kimi Raikkonen completing the podium in third. Lewis Hamilton won the last Grand Prix held at the Nürburgring in 2011. Monty Don visits some of the most famous and interesting gardens in France. In this episode, he tells the stories behind France's important historic gardens. These include elaborate walled gardens designed to please the mistress - and then the wife - of a king, magnificent displays of flowers and fountains that involved thousands of soldiers moving tracts of land and incited violent jealousy in another monarch, and a modern-day chateau garden that came close to bankrupting its owner. Monty sees how throughout history the French have used gardens as a public expression of money, power and passion.

Five years on from Trump's controversial planning victory, one golf course has been built, the hotel and property build is on hold while the accounts show investment of around ÂŁ25 million and, according to the Trump Organisation, 200 jobs have been created rather than the thousands promised. With the land estimated now to be worth around ten times what it was thanks to the outline planning consents, Panorama reporter John Sweeney asks if the Scottish government knew enough about the self-proclaimed billionaire before saying yes and challenges Donald Trump to reveal what is behind the Trump brand.

The Arctic and Antarctic are the greatest and least known wildernesses of all magical ice worlds inhabited by the most bizarre and hardy creatures on Earth. At the North Pole, the sun returns after six months of darkness. To the south, the tree line marks the start of the taiga forest, which contains one third of all trees on earth. At the other end of the planet, in the Southern Ocean, penguins struggle to escape a sea lion and teams of orcas use giant waves to wash seals from ice floes. Below the ice, woodlice the size of dinner plates and terrifying sea spiders can be found whilst above, David retraces the routes of early explorers.

Imagine... Rod Stewart: Can’t Stop Me Now BBC1, 22.35 In Imagine...Rod Stewart: Can’t Stop Me Now, Alan Yentob visits legendary rocker Rod Stewart at his LA home as he releases his first album of new material in almost 20 years - an album which, instantly shot to the top of the charts In a series of conversations, ‘Rod the Mod’ looks back to the 1960s, where he started out with groundbreaking acts like Steampacket and Jeff Beck, going on to front Faces from 1969. In an unmissable sequence, Imagine captures Rod with his soulmate and mischievous partner in crime, Ronnie Wood. The band’s offstage antics and wildly energetic shows became legendary, as did Rod’s love affairs with a string of models, actresses and Bond girls. In tandem, his solo career - songs like Maggie May, You Wear it Well, and Sailing - propelled him to global superstardom. Whether pouting and gorgeous in silk harem pants and eyeliner, or kicking a football around on Top Of The Pops, Rod quickly became British rock music’s most popular Jack the Lad. The 1980s were a critical disaster, but his constant reinvention has given him a career lasting half a century. From Beatnik to Mod, from Folkie to Disco Artist, from Glam Rocker to, most recently, Crooner of American standards, it has been a remarkable musical journey and one that deserves reappraisal. Featuring rare archive footage and interviews with friends, family and musicians, Imagine presents a hugely entertaining romp through the most exciting decades in pop music history

BBC2, 21.00 On the 25th anniversary of one of the world’s worst offshore oil disasters, this documentary chronicles the tragic events that occurred on the Piper Alpha rig on the 6th of July 1988. It was a cataclysm that killed 167 men and left only 61 survivors, each of whom had to fight for their lives to escape the huge, labyrinthine structure and the flames that were consuming it. The film will also look at life on-board Piper Alpha before the explosion and also hears from survivors on how their life changed after the explosion. This 90-minute documentary will detail the experiences of the men who found themselves in the midst of an inferno that destroyed a rig which was, at one time, the world’s single largest oil producer. There will be testimonies from those who survived, many of whom have never spoken publicly about the events before. The programme will also feature newly released recordings of the coastguards and emergency services as they reacted to the disaster. Some drama reconstructions will show how the disaster unfolded and the horror the men of Piper Alpha had to endure.

W C choice Australia with Simon Reeve BBC2, 19:00
Simon travels from Darwin in Australia's Northern Territory, or Top End, across to the remote Cape York Peninsula, and on to the Great Barrier Reef. Simon sets off from Kakadu, the largest national park in the world, where the wildlife is under threat from the march of millions of poisonous cane toads. He joins a team of toad-busters catching the amphibian invaders - originally introduced to the country to kill pests. In Robertson barracks Simon meets Australia's best - and only - tank regiment. They will soon host 6,000 American Marines - evidence of Australia's strategic importance in the Asia Pacific region. Simon also heads out on patrol with Norforce, a unique military unit who use ancient aboriginal knowledge to help them survive in the bush. On the Cape York peninsula Simon joins scientists catching deadly box jellyfish, whose venom could prove to have great medicinal value. And on the Great Barrier Reef he dives in search of the starfish destroying coral.

Series following the work of probate researchers trying to find the heirs of people who have died without leaving a will, leaving thousands of pounds unclaimed. Motorcycle enthusiast Ian Milner died in 2010 and it's up to the heir hunters to try and find living relatives. Their search takes them to Bradford and they are in a race against competing firms. The team also looks at the estate of Ruth Sedgbeer who came from a family of Scottish sheep farmers that were part of a pioneering Victorian experiment aimed at turning Exmoor into farmland. Plus, could you be an heir to an unclaimed estate worth thousands or even millions of pounds?
Scotland’s Hebrides are Europe’s final frontier against the wild and unpredictable Atlantic Ocean. Three years in the making, including two years of filming, the series – which is produced by Maramedia, in conjunction with Otter Films for BBC Scotland - paints a dramatic and intimate picture of Scottish wildlife across the seasons. As narrator Ewan McGregor says: ”On the edge of the Atlantic lies a world of rock and water, wind-scoured and rugged, yet full of grace and beauty. Exposed to a restless ocean and Europe’s wildest weather, the animals of these islands face challenge after challenge…” In this first episode autumn arrives with a vengeance. Young swallows, otters and grey seals face up to the biggest storms and highest tides of the year as they move towards independence. Tens of thousands of geese and swans arrive for the winter only to find predatory white-tailed eagles hungry and ready to hunt them. And on the Isle of Rum, a mighty stag faces the ultimate challenge in a battle to decide the true Monarch of the Glen
Married To The Job ITV1, 20.30 Landmark Films’ cameras follow Hertfordshire’s most senior female police detectives at home and at work “I have a few images in my head now which I will take with me to my grave. You never forget the face...I’m tough but I’m not that tough.” Detective Inspector Jo Walker, Child Protection, Hertfordshire Police This unique new six-part factual series shows how senior women detectives balance running investigations into serious and sometimes disturbing crimes with often complex personal and family lives. Filmed over a year unprecedented access to officers from the Hertfordshire force at home and at work, Married To The Job introduces us to Detective Chief Inspector Julie Wheatley and Detective Inspectors Jo Walker, Kay Lancaster and Lynda Coates. Between them, the four detectives have more than 75 years of police experience and are a rare breed - only one in five senior officers is a woman. From prisoners who abscond to ruthless conmen who prey on the elderly, and from prolific burglars to cases of child abuse, this series vividly depicts how the detectives face some of the most challenging criminals in Hertfordshire. The detectives are seen at home with their families, and talk openly about the pressures of juggling their personal lives with absorbing investigations, and the emotional impact of dealing with victims of crime. The cameras follow DI Kay Lancaster as she adapts to single life - she has separated from her policeman husband and is trying to keep family life on track for her young sons. Meanwhile, at work she’s fighting a spate of crimes by gangs who victimise and bully the elderly, with sometimes tragic consequences. Kay says she keeps her ‘working kit’ of fluorescent jacket and wellies under her desk, just in case: “I always wear high heels [in the office] because otherwise people think I’m a munchkin. But I have been known to have to stand in a field most of the night digging up a shallow grave and you don’t want to do that in high heels.”

Polar landscapes in autumn are transformed as the big freeze returns. Most animals leave on epic journeys, some now battle to breed, and for the hardy few it's a time of opportunity. In the Arctic, polar bears gather in large numbers on the coast to wait for the return of the ice. Tempers soon fray and violent contests break out. Off the coast, 2,000 beluga whales head for a special estuary, a gigantic 'whale spa', whilst inland the tundra undergoes a dramatic transformation and musk ox males and young caribou engage in very different mating rituals. Down in Antarctica, adelie penguin chicks huddle together in creches and two chicks take their first swim. It seems penguins are not born with a love of water though - and with good reason, as a leopard seal explodes from the sea in a hunting manoeuvre that has never before been captured on film.

Three of Britain's leading chefs come face-to-face with one of the most pressing issues of our times: food poverty. Recent research estimates that nearly five million people in the UK are struggling to feed themselves properly and eat nutritiously. Great British Budget Menu goes straight to the heart of the problem as James Martin, Angela Hartnett and Richard Corrigan live with three households where people are finding it hard to make ends meet. Food prices have risen by 25% in the last five years, hitting household budgets hard. The chefs discover how tough it is for a pensioner to put food on the table and the difficulties working parents face cooking tasty, nutritious food for themselves and their children when supermarket offers on cheap convenience foods look tempting on their limited resources. Richard Corrigan visits a family of six in Mansfield who, on average, have just £1.66 per day to feed each member of the family.

Brady and Hindley: Possession ITV1, 21.00
This landmark documentary on the fiftieth anniversary of the first of the Moors murders raises new questions about a case which remains open and whose impact continues to be felt. Produced by Wild Pictures (makers of recent, acclaimed ITV factual series Her Majesty’s Prison: Aylesbury) the film features first hand accounts from key figures and photographs taken by the killers to offer a fresh insight into the horrific crimes committed by Myra Hindley and Ian Brady. They were sentenced to life in prison in 1966 for the murders of Lesley Ann Downey, 10, John Kilbride, 12, and Edward Evans, 17. In the mid-eighties they admitted that they had also killed Keith Bennett, 12, and Pauline Reade, 16. The film includes a recording of Myra Hindley describing the killing that led to her capture, the trial of the century and reflecting on her crimes. The recording, made for Myra Hindley biographer Duncan Staff, a consultant and contributor for the film, provides an insight into the calculated nature of the killings. She revealed to Staff how all the Moors murderers’ burial sites were ‘marked’ using photographs, with Hindley and/or Brady posing by the graves. In the film we hear from a child who was taken to Saddleworth moor by Brady and Hindley but came back alive. Speaking for the first time on television, Carol Waterhouse, a neighbour of Hindley’s, describes how she and her brother were taken for a picnic there and tricked into posing in the area where Keith Bennett is believed to be buried. “They seemed very nice. Friendly, not like other adults,” says Carol. The film raises new questions about these grave-marking images. Experts tell the documentary they believe a set of photographs taken by Hindley and Brady - and handed to Staff - might be grave markers on a separate site away from Saddleworth Moor. Britain’s leading forensic archaeologist, Professor John Hunter, is seen searching the site with body dogs.

Masters of their craft THE ability to entertain is a gift, and one which will provide the artiste with endless satisfaction.
The buzz one gets from applause and appreciation after a stage show is second to nothing. It can also be the most soul-destroying! An entertainer can have 100 people come and say they enjoyed the show. And yet, if one person gives a negative comment, it can easily burst the bubble. There is an age-old mantra in show business: “You will please some of the people some of the time, but never all of the people all of the time.” Having said that, on a circuit like Tenerife, with the right formula and the right delivery, it IS possible to please all of the people all of the time. There are a few “stand out” acts here who manage to do just that. Here are three artistes across different fields of entertainment who I believe to be masters of their craft.
COMEDY
BILLY PORTER has been making people laugh for a fair few decades, and has been treading the boards over the last few years here in Tenerife.
Billy is a much-sought-after comedian and has been working the same venues for some time. He is the original crowd-puller and is extremely well known, so it is hardly a surprise that these places want to keep him on. His style is unique and, with no other comedians of the same genre, he is able to command a strong following. I have seen Billy work many times in different venues and his show is never the same. He has a plethora of comedic material to draw upon, and he ad libs whenever the opportunity arises. He is always on stage for over an hour, the laughter is non-stop - and I have never seen him have a bad night. Billy is also a good singer and sometimes, not always, uses this, as well as stand-up comedy, in his show. Outrageous and hilarious, he is without doubt a master of his craft and a must-see for anyone who enjoys a good laugh.
VOCALIST
ROBBIE DOMINIC is, quite simply, an awesome singer. He has worked in Tenerife for almost two decades and has stuck to the genre of Eighties music.
Robbie has a polished show that delivers all the hits from a popular time in the history of music. His formula comprises medleys of songs and shortened versions segued together, which keeps the pace going from the word go. This is just one ingredient Robbie has found that keeps his audiences’ attention and, more often than not, on their feet dancing. He has attained great respect from his fellow entertainers on this circuit and is often referred to as “Sir Bob“. With immense stage presence and vocal power, it is a rare occurrence for Robbie to have a bad night. He has exactly the right formula of music and is unique on this circuit within the genre of music he chooses to deliver. In the past, Robbie has worked in bands and duos and, vocally, he is able to sing anything from Sinatra to ACDC. His Eighties gold show is brilliant and definitely worth booking. Hats off to Sir Bob, a master of his craft.
TRIBUTE
GED BOLTON has been performing as Rod Stewart for a long time, both here and in the UK. As a tribute artiste, you are immediately compared with the star you are performing as. And there is no doubt, when Ged walks in to a venue, just who he’s going to be taking off! His looks caricature those of Rod Stewart perfectly, so he’s already won half the battle before even singing a note. In fact, the likeness is so uncanny that he is often stopped by people at airports and such-like places and asked for a photograph. And even when they realise it’s not “the real one“,” they want a pic anyway. Ged can sing all of Rod’s famous hits, and he is always happy to oblige audience requests. Also, his stage attire is always immaculate, and he actually sounds like Rod Stewart - and, just like the Ronseal ad, he does exactly what is says on the tin. If you go to watch a tribute show, you are obviously interested in the artiste to start with. I’ve heard many comments from Rod Stewart fans who have seen Ged’s show and the most common is that he’s the best tribute they’ve ever seen. And that’s what makes Ged Bolton a master of his craft.
SPOTTED LAST Monday, I went to Tramps in the early hours so I could meet the mighty Scott Paige, one of the resident DJs. Olly, the manager, showed me to the area behind the DJ booth and initiated the introduction before being called away to greet a VIP. Scott had the dance floor packed and was dropping some brilliant tunes. Then Gareth Gates turned up, joined Scott in the booth and mixed a few tunes himself, albeit with a little assistance from the master.. He did okay, but there really is only one DJ in this pic. Stick to singing Gareth. The next big event to look forward to in Tramps is Westwood. Details of which are on the right.

Three quick Brits use 9bn litres ways to speed of water every day up a computer By Alex Ashton SPEEDING up a computer can help you become enormously more productive, and much happier as well.
Saving a few seconds in website page-load times, or in opening programmes, multiplied by the 100 or more pages you load, can save you tens or hundreds of hours a year. Even better, speeding up your home PC doesn’t need to take too much of your time. The following three tricks apply to any modern Windows-based computer: Remove any unnecessary programmes There are an infinite number of great programmes for Windows and you may have tried a whole bunch of them. The question is, do you still use them? I find many computers filled with freeware programmes, each one with a registration reminder or taskbar applet running in the background and using up a little bit of me of your computer’s CPU and memory (RAM). If you aren’t using these programmes, you shouldn’t let them use your computer’s resources. Simply go to the Add and Remove Programs wizard in the Control Panel and remove any programmes you aren’t using any more. Don’t worry; in most cases you can reinstall the programme later if you decide you need it again. A lot of these programmes may even of come bundled with something you actually need, so remember to read the set-ups
carefully to avoid them throwing in unwanted add-ons. Example: When you download Adobe Reader for viewing PDFs, they also try to trick you into installing Mcafee, which can bog down your system if you already have an antivirus. Check your start-up Even after removal of unnecessary programmes, you probably still have a bunch of them running in the background while you work. Each of these programmes starts when your computer boots, or you log-in to your desktop! They all use up part of your computer’s performance, which slows down your computer. Example: The windows assistant. Remember that paperclip in Microsoft Word that would give advice? Well, let’s face it, most of us know how to use a word processor. To improve your speed, you should consider using a start-up programme optimiser. These programmes look in several places Windows uses to find start-up programmes, such as your Start-up folder and the Windows Registry “Login” key (folder). A great free utility for this “CCleaner” can be found at the address below, which is just as good as the paid ones

available. http://www.piriform. com/ccleaner/download Speed up your computer: close programmes Perhaps the simplest way to speed up your computer, besides performing regular computer maintenance as suggested above, is to close down programmes when you’ve finished using them. For heavyweight programmes such as Microsoft Office or your Web browser, this is especially true. Keeping a few small programmes such as your Instant Messaging client open isn’t too bad (skype - ms messenger), but keeping a few large programmes open can slow down your computer significantly, especially if you have a small amount of computer memory (1 gig or less). Example: The Mozilla Firefox browser, while good and stable, has lots of memory leaks. So over time, as you increase the number of tabs or pages open, the PC will become slower. Studies have also found that people aren’t very good at multi-tasking, so using only one major application at a time may even make it more productive alongside. Know your initials RAM = random access memory, also know as memory PDF = portable document format, which is a type of file that allows documents to be sent uneditible GIG = gigabyte, the measurement of memory CPU = central processing unit, also known as the core chip
At Home with Water, a report commissioned by the Energy Saving Trust Foundation in partnership with DEFRA, Procter and Gamble, Thames Water, Consumer Council for Water and SaveWaterSaveMoney, presents the findings from a study of 86,000 British households – and sheds new light on how Brits use water. Showers are the biggest consumers of water in the home, using a quarter of the total – three per cent more than lavatories (22 per cent). At Home with Water found an average shower lasts seven-and-ahalf minutes – and cutting a MINUTE off that time would save British households £215 million on energy bills each year. Each day Britain “showers away” over TWO BILLION litres of water. At Home with Water pulls back the curtain on the showering habits of Brits, finding: On average, Britons shower 4.4 times a week, and take 1.3 baths. An average shower lasts seven-and-a half minutes – with one in eight taking more than ten minutes. Those in larger households with more people take fewer showers each week, but stay in longer when the opportunity arises. While a quarter of respondents have efficient eco-showerheads installed, a similar proportion have high-flow power showers. Away from the bath-
room, At Home with Water found that just over a fifth (22 per cent) of household water is used in the kitchen, with washing machines, dishwashers, kettles and taps all taking their share. More than nine in ten people (95 per cent) boil the kettle every day, with 40 per cent doing this five times a day or more. However, three quarters of households still boil more water than they need – with overfilling costing Brits £68 million a year. Despite the increasing use of new technology in UK homes, dishwashers are still second-best to handwashing in many cases. The average British household washes dishes by hand ten times a week, but only uses the dishwasher three times a week. Energy Saving Trust states that larger households could actually make greater energy and water savings by using an efficient, modern dishwasher rather than washing by hand. Andrew Tucker, water strategy manager at Energy Saving Trust, said: “When people think of energy use they think of heating and lighting, running electrical appliances or filling the car with petrol. It’s all too easy to turn on the tap and not think about the consequences. “But there is an environmental and energy cost attached to water which many people do not consider. On average, hot water use contributes £228 to the average annual combined energy bill.
“It’s clear that we are all using more water-consuming appliances regularly, especially showers, but that doesn’t mean we’re powerless to control our water use. “By reducing the amount of water – especially hot water – that we use, we can cut down on the energy demands of our lifestyles, which have changed radically over the last 50 years. Following three simple steps from the Energy Saving Trust will help reduce the energy and water bills of consumers – and stop their money spiralling down the plughole.” Energy Saving Trust is urging Britons to follow three simple tips to save water and energy, without impacting on their lifestyle. An average UK household could save £22 on their energy bills each year, with metered households saving an additional £13 on their water bills by: Showering smarter – installing an eco-shower head to a mixer or power shower – Water Energy Calculator results suggest could that 49 per cent of households may be eligible to do this; Turning it down – washing clothes at 30C – saving 40 per cent on a wash at 50-60C; Budgeting your brews – boil only the water you need when you fill the kettle – overfilling costs Brits £68 million a year. If everyone in the UK followed these three tips, the country could save around £600 million annually on its energy bills.

Butterfly Dome By David Hudgell The Royal Horticultural Society and the Eden Project are to create the UK’s largest butterfly rainforest experience at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show (9 – 14 July).
The RHS Butterfly Dome with Eden is a recreation of Eden’s worldfamous Rainforest Biome in a 25m diameter, 9m high dome. Visitors will be plunged into the heart of a steamy jungle on an elevated walkway surrounded by tropical palms, trees, climbers and orchids. While exploring this rich, diverse habitat, people will be able to spot the magnificent shapes and colours of Collect and sow seed from foxgloves Take cuttings from pinks (Dianthus) Prune philadelphus after flowering, removing stems carrying old flowers. Cut out very weak stems and some of the oldest wood Feed dahlias with a liquid fertiliser and ensure plants are well watered. Remove rose suckers excavate the soil so you can cut them back as far as possible Spray roses regularly to prevent pests and diseases getting hold Prune the long sideshoots on wisteria, cutting them all back to a length of about 20cm Lift, divide and replant healthy portions of flag iris rhizomes into freshly prepared soil. Reduce their leaves by half to prevent wind rock Water sweet peas and give a liquid feed. Pick flowers or deadhead regularly Water beans and pick them regularly Transplant brassica seedlings from the seedbed to their final positions, spacing them about 30-45cm apart. Brussels sprouts need about 75cm Plant out leek seedlings
3,000 tropical butterflies - the largest exhibited collection in the UK including some unusual varieties such as the Blue Morpho and Owl butterflies. There will be the chance to see the butterflies sipping from nectar plants and feeding stations throughout the garden. Visitors will also have the opportunity to witness young butterflies emerge from their chrysalises in a viewing cage. Mandy Almond, RHS
Hampton Show Manager, said: “Bringing the UK’s largest butterfly rainforest experience to RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show is an extremely exciting and challenging project, which will create a truly tropical spectacle for visitors at this year’s Show. The Dome will give visitors the chance to see the life-cycle of this remarkable insect and marvel at the astounding variety of shapes and colours they display.”
Paul Stone, Eden’s Landscape Manager and designer of the Dome, said: “The Dome will bring Eden to the biggest flower show in the world, offering visitors the opportunity to walk through a forest canopy, surrounded by butterflies. The garden champions important messages about plants and people, biodiversity and sustainable environments. Both Eden and the RHS are passionate about raising awareness of these issues”.
Gardening jobs from their seedbed once they are pencil thick, planting them 15cm apart in rows, with about 30cm between rows Place collars of card or carpet underlay around the stem base of newly transplanted brassicas to keep cabbage root fly away Pick off malformed or withered apples and any showing signs of pest or disease attack Keep fruit bushes covered with netting, then weave a cane through the bottom edge and peg it down to stop birds crawling underneath

Make the final pickings of rhubarb and cut any flower spikes that form right down to their base Lift early potatoes and shallots as they mature Sow swedes and cover with fleece to prevent seedlings being attacked by flea beetle Sow seeds of vegetables, including beetroot, cabbage, endive, kohl rabi, lettuce, radish, rocket, spinach and turnips Take cuttings of zonal and regal pelargoniums, and pot up rooted cuttings taken earlier Train the main stem of cucumber plants up a wire to the roof of your
greenhouse. Pinch out sideshoots two leaves after a flower or fruit Water plants in pots and grow bags with tepid water, if possible. Compost your kitchen and garden waste Push canes in around tall plants like gladioli and lilies and tie them to the stems for support Place eye protectors on the tops of all garden canes Water hanging baskets and containers daily, ensuring they never dry out Apply weedkillers to paths and drives Give houseplants a weekly liquid feed
The Eden Project will also be bringing its popular Freaky Nature family activities including viewing the fascinating microscopic world of bugs and beasties, getting up close and learning about the insect world. There will also be a butterfly-making workshop, where children can make butterflies which will be used as part of a display at Eden. The RHS Butterfly Dome with Eden will be created to celebrate the June launch of the Eden Project’s new Rainforest Aerial Walkway and the introduction of nearly 20 species of tropical butterfly into the Rainforest Biome this summer. The exhibit will form part of a Butterflies and Bees Area at the Show where visitors can learn about native plants and insects as well as tropical ones. The Native Butterfly Garden, by Butterfly Jungles, will create the ideal habitat to encourage butterflies into UK gardens. The
garden will be fluttering with Peacocks, Red Admirals, Small Tortoiseshells and Commas feeding from flowering shrubs, wildflowers and garden plants. Complementing this will be a garden for bees. The Bee Garden is a haven for pollinators, bursting with ideas to tempt honey and solitary bees with nectar and pollenrich plants. Both of these exciting gardens showcase many of the plants and flowers from the RHS Perfect for Pollinators list*. Mandy continued: “As well as creating amazing sights and experiences for visitors, the Butterflies and Bees Area is all about sharing ideas and ways to support British pollinators. As so many of us are concerned about our bees and butterflies we’re sure The Native Butterfly Garden and The Bee Garden will be popular with visitors and will encourage growing plants and flowers from the RHS Perfect for Pollinators list.”
Pest Control An insect known as the African Citrus Psyllid (Trioza Erytreae) is increasingly affecting citrus trees here in the Canary Islands.
The insect was discovered 11 years ago and has since spread across the islands. It leads to a reduction in the volumes and quality of the fruit produced. This pest was initially spotted in Valle Guerra, Tenerife, in 2002, and ever since, it has progressively spread to the islands of La Gomera, La Palma and Gran Canaria. Biologist Purificación Benito, Gran Canaria, has 794 hectares devoted to citrus production, he saw the appearance of the African Psyllid in 2010 in the northern and central areas of the island. The number of plantations affected in Gran Canaria has increased; while in 2012, only 32 cases were confirmed, during the first five
months of 2013 this number has already quadrupled, reaching 120. This year the pest has spread to every municipality in the island, with the exception of one, despite the fact that the insect prefers cooler temperatures and high humidity. These insects have the appearance of aphids and feed off citrus tree leaves, where some small bumps appear. They are also able to transmit a bacterium from ill to healthy trees which can kill the tree by preventing sap circulation. The pest originated in sub-Saharan Africa and the manner in which it arrived to the archipelago is unknown, although some speculate that it did via a non-inspected fruit batch introduced in the islands. To fight the insect, phytosanitary products are used, which plantation owners must regularly alternate to prevent the insect from growing resistant, explained the biologist.

Go with the flow
By Carl from Robot
I AM asked by clients on a number of occasions in the salon to cut a certain style for them that simply cannot be done.
It’s not because I won’t do it but because I can’t. So many factors come into play when working to create a look and it’s not just a question of picking up scissors and away we go. We have to check the condition of the hair, the texture and the growth pattern. If not, the look you after will just not work. Here’s an example: if you’re asking for a blunt fringe to your haircut and your hairline at the front swings to one side, then this isn’t a look for you. I can cut it into the hair but, trust me, it
won’t work. This is also the case for neck lines. If you want feathery and whispy, yet your hairline grows upwards, then forget it because it’s not going to happen. Your hair doesn’t grow from your head in an upward direction. It actually leaves the root in many ways, which causes problems if you want a specific cut. As stylists, we check this on your consultation (please tell me you get one before your appointment starts) to analyse that what you are asking for can be achieved. It’s not that we might not care to give you the look that you want, but simply because it might not be possible. Very rarely does the hair grow the same on both sides of the head. Check it out in the mirror and the chances are you’ll see that one side grows forward and the other back.
We cannot change this because we have to go with the flow, cutting your hair as it grows and how it falls, Yes, you can force it into place, but my style of hairdressing doesn’t allow for this. You will find that styling your hair will be so much easier if you follow its growth, never trying to make it do what it won’t do - or doesn’t want to do. Following this rule will ensure that your hair looks good when you return to the salon for your next appointment, and not just for a few days after you’ve left it.
Extra virgin olive oil is not that hot
THOSE healthconscious people who cook with extra virgin olive oil could be wasting their money.
That’s because, despite being the gourmet staple favoured by celebrity chefs, it loses most of its benefits when heated. Olive oil has more antioxidants than other oils, and it also contains bioactive components - called phenolic compounds – which are thought to help ward off cancer and other diseases. But according to researchers from Portugal’s University of Por-
Page 40
to, oils degrade in quality as soon as they are heated. In the Food Research International journal, they said their research showed that any kind of heating reduced the power of the phenolic compounds in the oil. “Virgin olive oil consumption, as final seasoning or within cooked foods, is increasing worldwide, mainly because of its recognised nutritional benefits,” said the report. “However, different cooking practices, from common frying, to boiling and microwave cooking, undoubtedly modify the olive oil chemical profile.”
It added: “Even after being cooked, olive oil will still be at least as healthy as vegetable oil, so it is not worth replacing one with the other. “But it could be ‘economically advantageous’ to use standard olive oil, rather than pay more for the extra virgin variety.” And there are other ways to get the most out of olive oil when cooking, said the researchers. One is to keep heating to a minimum, and another is to keep adding a splash of olive oil during the cooking process. That will stop it getting so hot that it loses its healthy properties. The report said: “Olive oil performance, under prolonged thermal processing, is usually equal or superior to other refined vegetable oils. “However, as most of its bioactive components, including phenolic compounds, are gradually lost, it is economically advantageous to use lower olive oil grades and frequent replenishment under prolonged thermal processing. “After a short heating period, most olive oil advantages, in comparison with other vegetable oils, are lost.”

Brain-tumour horror! By Val Sainsbury CAMPAIGNERS have warned that treatment for brain tumours is “seriously lagging behind” applications for other cancers.
Brain Tumour Research says the condition receives less than 1% of national funding for cancer research. Officials warn 75% of those who die from the condition are under 75, and that brain tumours are one of the few conditions becoming much more prevalent. Cancer Research UK stressed that research into brain tumours was a “key priority”, to enable more patients to survive the cancer. Right now, brain tumours are the leading cause of cancer deaths in young people.
While almost threequarters of braintumour deaths occur in the under-75s, the comparable figure for cancer as a whole is 47%. Some 58% of people diagnosed with brain cancer die within a year, compared with 5% for breast cancer, 35% for leukaemia and 7% for prostate cancer. And brain cancer is
also the leading cause of cancer deaths in children. Brain Tumour Research says that from 2002-12, total spending by the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) was £4,515m. But of that sum, just £35m went to fund brain tumour research. The charity wants the British Government,
large cancer charities and the public to band together to increase the investment into brain tumour research significantly. Sue Farrington-Smith, director of Brain Tumour Research, said: “Our research shows that in the past 10 years, there have been huge strides forward in the
treatments and, therefore, survival rates for some cancers such as breast cancer and leukaemia. “But at the same time, treatments for brain tumours have lagged seriously behind and, at current research spend levels, it could take another 100 years to catch up. “There isn’t enough awareness about brain tumours, in contrast with, say, breast cancer or leukaemias. The GPs aren’t necessarily aware and do not put people forward.” She said secondary brain cancers had now become more common, because of improvements in the management of other cancers, which enabled people to survive their primary tumours. But Ms FarringtonSmith added: “Every day, I hear from people whose lives are being devastated by this disease; whose treatment is falling short; who are living without hope for a cure. “Action needs to
be taken now by the Government, the larger cancer charities and the general public because we can’t afford to wait a year, let alone 10.” Dr Julie Sharp, of Cancer Research UK, said: “There’s an urgent need for more research into brain tumours, and we’re determined to improve the outlook for patients and their loved ones. “Our researchers developed the drug temozolomide, used worldwide to treat the most common type of brain tumour. “Last year we spent more than £4m on braintumour research, as well as £129m on research that underpins all types of cancer. “But we need to ensure that more people survive, which is why brain-tumour research is one of our key priorities, and why we continue to work closely with braintumour charities and researchers to share resources and expertise to boost research efforts.”
Deadly aspect of pain-killing drug THE drug diclofenac, which is taken for pain relief and to combat inflammation in certain conditions, is prescribed to six million patients a year in Britain.
It is also available over the counter at pharmacies, but doctors have been told to stop prescribing the pills to those with a heart condition or circulation problems. Smokers and people with high blood pressure, raised cholesterol levels or diabetes should take the drug only after “careful consideration” with their GP, warn health officials. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said patients who have previously had a heart attack or stroke should no longer use the tablets. An MHRA spokesman said its advice had been
updated after a European review, which found an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Yet diclofenac was the most-commonly prescribed, non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory (NSAID) drug in Britain last year. It is used to relieve pain and to combat inflammation in arthritis, back pain, gout, headache - and the aches and fever associated with flu. In March, a study published in The Lancet journal showed patients taking high doses raised by one-third their risk of suffering a killer heart attack or stroke, or of dying from heart disease. The study also showed that NSAIDs led to a 2-4 times increased risk of complications such as bleeding ulcers. NSAIDs, which include ibuprofen, are among the most commonly-used drugs in the UK, with at least 17
5th July - 11th July 2013
million prescriptions a year. The research found that for every 1,000 people with a moderate risk of heart disease given one year of treatment with high-dose diclofenac (150mg daily) or ibuprofen (2,400mg daily), about three would experience an avoidable heart attack, of which one would be fatal. Dr Sarah Branch, deputy director of the MHRA’s vigilance and risk management of medicines division, said: “For many patients, diclofenac will continue to provide safe and effective pain relief. But it is no longer suitable for certain at-risk groups. “Those with underlying heart conditions currently taking diclofenac should speak to their GP or pharmacist at their next routine visit to consider an alternative pain-relief treatment.”

Recipe of the week IT is no coincidence that Ricardo Marques, chef at the 108 - Wine & Coffee Bar in Calle Juan 23, Los Cristianos, loves healthy food. That is exactly what it specialises in, and owner Dina Celina is delighted with the creativity which flows from the kitchen. Ricardo, from Portugal, who thrives on raw vegetarian food (his favourite), has “invented” his own special lasagne, especially for the bar - and he is extremely proud of the dish. As a visual artist, he tries to express creativity and emotions when he cooks, and he firmly believes that cooking is a form of expression which can stimulate people’s senses. Dina says: “We like to say that we’ve got a creative kitchen, and we like to experiment with fresh, healthy food in a different way from many other restaurants on the Island. “The menu is limited, but we’ve got something for everyone, and we also are more than happy to customise the dishes for you.” The 101 Lasagne (Mountain and sea layers served with rosemary potatoes, rocket and roasted hazelnut pesto) Cooking time 55 minutes (serves 2) Ingredients 20 king prawns, peeled, deveined and sliced in half 8 slices of jamon serrano 2 garlic cloves finely
Page 42
chopped 1 leek sliced in julienne 1 medium red pepper 4 medium oyster mushrooms sliced in julienne 30g finely-chopped parsley 50ml white wine 200ml coconut milk 1 tsp orange zest 1 lemon 250g small potatoes, washed and sliced in quarters 2 fresh rosemary sticks 150g rocket Roasted hazelnut pesto 150g hazelnuts 100g fresh basil, finelychopped 20g fresh mint, finelychopped 2 cloves garlic 30ml olive oil 20ml unfiltered apple cider vinegar 50g parmesan cheese ½tsp cumin seeds Enough extra virgin olive oil to fry potatoes Salt and pepper to taste Method Start by organising and arranging the ingredients Roast red pepper over open flame until skin gets slight burned, then take it aside and let it cool down. In a thick pan over a medium heat with extra virgin olive oil, cook
the garlic until golden, add the mushrooms, leek, white wine and the juice of half-lemon, and let it simmer over a low heat for 5 mins. It’s time to start the rosemary potatoes. In a deep pan, with enough extra virgin olive oil, deep-fry the potatoes until golden and crispy (10-15 mins), then take them aside, drain the oil and toss the potatoes with the rosemary, salt, pepper and the other half of lemon juice. Now back to the veggies which were simmering. Add the king prawns, coconut milk and lemon zest, season to your taste and let simmer for another 5 mins. Time to turn your attention to the hazel nut pesto. Roast the nuts and cumin seeds, and let them cool. Then, with a decentsize mortar and pestle, blend the hazelnuts with the garlic, herbs and cumin seeds, add the oil and cheese until you get a good mix. And now we create the mountain and sea layers. Decorate the plate to your taste, and place layers of jamon, vegetables and prawns on top of one another until the last jamon is on top. Mix the potatoes with the pesto and rocket and make a little mound to go beside the lasagne - and you can add a few slices of cold strawberries for a fresh taste. Bon appétit!
Sainsbury’s
supports the spud growers Sainsbury’s has relaxed the product specification of Scottish potatoes to support farmers through one of the toughest seasons.
The run of wet weather this season has left many Scottish farmers with crops of smaller potatoes with increased blemishes and scarring. Varieties including Osprey, Maris Piper, Desiree and King Edward have all had smaller sized potatoes than normal years – however Sainsbury’s and Albert Bartlett have worked together to utilise the crop and include these in bags of spuds on the retailer’s shelves. Without compromising on taste, Sainsbury’s has also permitted the inclusion of ‘growth cracked’ potatoes in the basics range to help farmers utilise as much of the crop as possible and avoid
reliance on imported produce. Julien Roberts, Sainsbury’s potato buyer said: “Our farmers across the UK have had a really challenging season due to the weather, that’s why we’ve committed to make use of all potatoes and other veg that meets regulations and stands up on taste.” “Customers might have noticed their spuds are smaller than usual, so despite a bit of extra cooking prep to serve up two baked potatoes rather than one they will taste just as good.” Sainsbury’s has been working with Albert Bartlett since August last year to plan the potential effects that a wet season could have on the crop, this planning has meant British produce is available and customer demand can be met. Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead said: “Potatoes are a key Scottish crop and Scotland has a world wide-reputation for
the production of high quality seed potatoes. Our farmers have had a difficult time due to the wet summer and bad winter which has impacted on their harvests last year. This is a welcome move by Sainsbury’s and will provide reassurance to farmers and producers – consumers can also be assured that they will still receive top quality Scottish potatoes.” John Heginbottom, Sales and Marketing director for Albert Bartlett continues: “Sainsbury’s has strongly supported their Scottish potato growers following one of the worst potato harvests and wettest summers on record. Sainsbury’s worked closely with us and our growers allowing ‘misshapen’ and smaller potatoes to be packed for their customers. This prompt and collaborative action helped to avoid the need for importing potatoes and utilised as much of the Scottish grown crop as possible.”

Too many mouths One in five parents in the UK is struggling to feed their children, new research has revealed.
The research shows more than twenty per cent of parents have skipped meals, gone without food to feed their children or relied on family members or friends for food in the last twelve months. The research, carried out by Tesco, the Foodbanks charity the Trussell Trust and food redistribution charity FareShare comes as the three organisations prepare to hold the biggest ever food collection in the UK this weekend. 70% of families suffering from food poverty with children in primary school education rely in some part on food supplied by schools, either through free school meals or food given out by breakfast or after school clubs. The upcoming school summer
holidays could now see a large number of children going hungry. More than a quarter of parents suffering from some form of food poverty said they were unable to provide food for all the meals their children need during the school holidays. The research also shows the problem of food poverty is unlikely to improve in the near future, with only a third of people currently suffering from food poverty expecting their situation to improve in the next twelve months. Rebecca Shelley, Group Corporate Affairs Director at Tesco said: “This research reveals that since our last national food collection in December, the problem of food poverty in the UK has increased and shows no signs of improving. It’s hitting families hard, especially when resources like free school meals, breakfast clubs and after school clubs are not available. “Because we have stores in so many com-
munities across the UK, we are working with the help of our customers, thousands of our colleagues and volunteers from the Trussell Trust and FareShare to help provide emergency food to people who are struggling.” The National Food Collection will take place in every Tesco store in the country and will help provide much needed food for the Trussell Trust foodbank network and the 900 UK charities supported by FareShare. Tesco held its first national collection in December last year, raising the equivalent of 2.4 million meals for people in need. Like December, the retailer will be topping up total donations by a further 30%. Lindsay Boswell, CEO of FareShare said: “FareShare supports more than 900 frontline charities across the country by providing them with good quality, nutritious food. These charities offer not only a meal, but invaluable support to some of the poorest peo-
ple in our society. Alarmingly, more than a third of these are organisations like breakfast and after school clubs that help feed vulnerable children. “This collection comes at a crucial time. We fed more people than ever before last year but the demand for our services is rapidly increasing, as more people turn to charities for food than at any other time in FareShare’s history. Thanks to the generous support of Tesco and their customers, we’ll be able to provide them with even more at a time of urgent need.” Chris Mould, Chairman of the Trussell Trust said: “That one in five parents in this country are struggling to afford food for their families and thousands more people are turning to foodbanks for emergency food is a stark reminder of how tough things have become for many ordinary people. Trussell Trust foodbanks have recently seen the biggest ever increase in numbers turning to us for help - almost 350,000 people received three days emergency
food in 2012-13, 170 per cent more than the previous year. “We’re meeting parents who’ve gone hungry for days in order to feed their children, and school holidays are always especially difficult with many budgets stretched to breaking point. Our foodbanks across the UK are working tirelessly to meet the growing demand and the Tesco collection will provide vital supplies to help stop families going hungry this summer.” The research: 18% of people in the UK have suffered from some form of food poverty, including skipping meals, parents going without food to feed their children or relying on family or friends to provide food. The figure rises to 21% for households with children; The problem of food poverty is higher in 18-24 year olds with 44% of this age group saying they had experienced some form of food poverty in the last six months. School holidays are a particularly difficult time for families, with more than a quarter of parents saying they can’t provide
food for all the meals their children need. More than four in five parents in food poverty worry that they will struggle to provide nutritious food for their children in the near future and more than 50% of these parents have gone without food to feed their family, with a quarter of doing so on a weekly basis or more often. The National Food Collection: Every Tesco store in the UK will be taking part in the collection. For the first time, Tesco Express stores will be joining the collection and customers who prefer to shop for their groceries online will also be able to donate. Tesco will also be rolling out permanent collection points in some of its stores, so that customers can donate food year round. Like last December’s collection, Tesco will be topping up total donations by a further 30%, Tesco colleagues, volunteers from FareShare and the Trussell Trust and members of the Tesco Retired Staff Association will be helping customers donate food on the 5 and 6 July.
A TB risk from meat? The UK Food Standards Agency is highlighting its meat inspection process following reports in the media about TB risks from meat.
The Agency’s meat hygiene inspectors check all meat before it enters the food chain to make sure it is fit for people to eat. Where inspection reveals any lesions caused by TB in more than one organ or region of a carcass, it is declared unfit for human consumption and destroyed. When a TB lesion has been found in the lymph nodes of only one organ or part of the carcass, that organ or part of the carcass and the associated lymph nodes are removed and destroyed. The remaining meat is considered safe to enter the food chain. The FSA is confident that
5th July - 11th July 2013
the inspection systems in place are robust, otherwise we would not allow this meat into the food chain. According to the European Food Safety Authority, the risk of anyone catching bovine TB through eating meat is ‘negligible’. When people do contract bovine TB, it is usually through drinking unpasteurised milk or through prolonged
contact with an infected animal. This view is supported by the Advisory Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Food (ACMSF), the independent panel of experts that advises the Agency in this area, following its own risk assessment in 2010. In addition, there is no documented case where a person has caught TB through eating meat.

MG 3 finds the right formula
IT’S brandspanking new, and the MG3 supermini will not be available until September at the earliest.
But plenty of eyes were popping when it was showcased during the British Formula One Grand Prix at Silverstone. Racing fans arriving for the major British motoring event of the year were able to view the new MG3 - built at the firm’s Longbridge plant in Birmingham - in all its glory in the Woodlands camping area, just 250m from the F1 course. In fact, they were spoiled for choice because three different examples of the Birmingham company’s latest star enjoyed
basking there: Lady Grey with Shards graphics, Smokey Blue with Hope&Glory graphics, and White of the Tiles with Mod Oct graphics. Guy Jones, MG’s sales and marketing director, said the new MG Motorbuilt vehicle was already gathering orders, “We have only just started to roll out the MG3 in the UK and
already the reaction has been fantastic,” he said. “We’ve already had people putting their names down to secure one of the first cars. “It’s distinctive, cheeky and will be a real fun car, and the vast range of styling choices means the fun starts even when you’re ordering one. “But at the same time, it’s a very practical car and will offer one of the
very best interior space packages in class.” The MG 3 is set to cost less than £10,000 and will be offered with “hundreds” of different styling and customisation options. Initially, three trim levels and 10 exterior colours - with names such as “Hello Yellow” will be offered. The top two trim levels will come as standard,
with equipment that includes Bluetooth connectivity, air-con and DAB digital radio. Hill-start assist will be optional. MG’s new hatchback will also launch with the “MG 3 Collection” offer. It allows buyers to personalise the car’s bodywork with various patterns, decals and stripes, including large RAF roundels. The European version of the MG 3 was first seen at the Shanghai Motor Show in April, complete with a more distinctive exterior and plusher interior than the car of the same name on sale in China. It has been designed and engineered in the UK, and final assembly is taking place in the UK, with knocked-down kits being shipped to Longbridge from China. The MG 3 is an important part of the brand’s rebirth in the
UK. Sales of the MG 6 haven’t impressed, but a style-led supermini pitched into a growing segment should lift sales volumes. The customisation packages will give owners “hundreds and hundreds” of different ways to spec their cars, according to a source. They will include myriad options for the exterior styling, interior trim and wheel designs. The company are pitching the MG 3 against the likes of the Mini and Vauxhall Adam. But with prices set to start at less than £10,000, it could be marketed as offering the style of those rivals with the space of a car from the class above. The MG 3, Ford Fiestasized and five-door only, will be offered with a 104bhp 1.5-litre petrol engine, mated to a fivespeed manual as its sole, initial, powertrain choice.
Green, mean machine is fastest of all
A Lightweight car, driven by a former Government minister, has shattered the 39-year-old land speed record for an electric car. The Lola B12 69/EV, built by green-orientated Drayson Racing technologies and driven by Lord (Paul) Drayson, - Minister of Science in the last Labour government – reached a top speed of 204.185mph
(an average of two runs) to better the record by 29.2mph. Lord Drayson, who runs the Kidlington, Oxfordshire-based company and is also a racing driver, took the wheel of the 850bhp, quad-motor-powered prototype and flew down Yorkshire’s RAF Elvington Airfield. The previous record was set in 1974 by Battery Box Electric in

America, and a delighted Lord Drayson said “It is not the outright speed that is most impressive about this record, but the engineering challenge of accelerating a 1,000kg vehicle on a short runway over a measured mile.” His incredible machine, converted from a Lola LMP1 Le Mans racer, had to weigh less than 1,000kg to be classed as lightweight. And it did!
It is driven by a 20-kilowatt battery, which gives it a massive 850 horsepower, and Lord Drayson said afterwards: “What it shows to people, I hope, is just what the future potential of electric cars is. Obviously, this is a very special racing car. “But by setting this world record here in Britain, we say two things: It is a pointer to the future because
the technology we developed for this car will filter down to the cars we use every day. “And secondly, it’s a message about how, here in the UK, we’re a world leader with this technology. We’ve led motorsport engineering, and now we’re also leading with electric motorsport engineering.” His Drayson firm have an impressive
portfolio of work and competitions. As well as land speed records and Le Mans, they will also compete in the FIA’s Formula-E Championship, which begins in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, next year. The company, established in 2007, were founded on Lord Drayson’s three decades of experience in science, business, politics and motorsport.

Tenerife Pool Tables for their support. Also, thanks to Shai from Direct Telecom, all the staff at Palms Bar and everyone who made the night so special. The celebrations went on deep into the night. With another season in the can, thoughts turn to the new season, which begins on Tuesday, 13th August. If you have a team or a venue, or maybe you would like to join a side, then call 686 903 552. Registrations are being taken throughout July.

No Pas O Nada for Sheena!
SIMPLY translated, the headline means “no worries”. And that’s how it turned out for Second Division Los Abrigos team Pas O Nadas. Captain Sheena, in fine form, led her side to a 6-2 win over the Playgirls and hit her first maximum to boot. Amistad 2 had a real tussle with Sundowners, which ended allsquare after the Valle side took the trebles. And The Rebels pinched the last rubber
to tie their match with Bar 180 D. La Caña Lancers enjoyed a long journey and a 5-3 victory at Barracuda Hunters, but Picassos’ trip to Emerald Shamrocks saw them slip to a 6-2 defeat. Leaders Tenerife Sun matched that result and maintained their lead at the top with a win over Phoenix Flights. Rood hit the top of Division 1 in some style last week, but they didn’t have it all their own way in

their latest fixture. Indeed, they almost lost at Bar 180 C. The trebles leg saving their blushes somewhat! Chipeque have already entertained Emerald Lounge twice, and the visitors have won twice by the same 5-3 scoreline. Deja vu! Summerlands made light work of Bar 180 B, dispatching them 7-1, while Naughty Nautas claimed their second victory of the season by beating Amistad 1. After a real hammering
which made them way too strong for Vikings Ensecan, who scored just one point. The feat was mirrored by Phoenix Bar as they enjoyed a fine night of darts banter and plenty of ale with Ourplace Playboys. La Caña Pirates’ Ricky hit his first maximum, at home to Ourplace Naturals. But the visitors didn’t seem too bothered with that and went away with a handy six points. Mick and Steve

at Rood last week, Gaffers B got back to winning ways with a fine 6-2 success over Trap Door. Big Premier League winners again this week were Palms Sports Bar. They chalked up another whitewash, this time at Scruffy Macs. In fact, they have only lost two legs in their last two matches! This week’s visitors, Bar 180 A, will have their work cut out. In second place, The Pub had Pablo and Scott hitting 180s,

swapped maximums for Bar 180 A and Target Army respectively, in a tight match on the Golf. My sources tell me that almost every leg had both players on a double at the same time. As we know, it’s doubles for dough, and Bar 180 came out richer on the night. Elsewhere, Gaffers A, who seem to be struggling, came up against a Target Titans team who are no mugs. Their 6-2 win puts them firmly in mid-table.

Tour de France suffers flats Flat tyres suffered in the Tour de France may have been an act of sabotage, with tacks placed on the road by spectators. Two of Team Sky’s cyclists suffered punctures during stage five of the Tour de France; Geraint Thomas and Richie Porte were two of a handful of riders to suffer during the 228.5km (142 mile) run from Cagnes-sur-Mer, a stage won by Mark Cavendish on the seafront in Marseille. Neither rider lost time, although the stop for a change of tyre and another standing start caused further pain for Thomas, who has been riding on
a cracked pelvis since a crash on the opening stage. “Richie (Porte) and G (Thomas) both experienced flat tyres, and we think they might have been down to people placing tacks on the road,” Team Sky sports director Nicolas Portal said. “That’s a bit of a worry, but thankfully nobody was hurt.” Chris Froome avoided both the tacks and two major crashes near the finish to remain in seventh place overall - just three seconds off the leader, former Team Sky man Simon Gerrans, who is now riding for Orica GreenEdge.

World Waterski championships
to take Puerto Colon by storm
Making a big splash
A WHOLE range of activities are taking place in Arona’s municipal swimming pool at Los Cristianos this month. Several short courses for residents are available in the newly-covered 25m pool, which sits at the end of the Olympic-sized 50m one. If they prove popular, the scheme could be extended until September.
Hamilton’s day goes flat
LEWIS HAMILITON was left cursing his luck during Sunday’s F1 Grand Prix at Silverstone when, after looking well set ahead of the pack, a burst tyre put paid to his chances, even though he finished fourth after dropping back to last. His Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg fought off Red Bull’s Mark Webber to win a dramatic British Grand Prix, which was overshadowed by a series of tyre failures. Needless to say, an official inquest is being carried out with tyre manufacturers Pirelli to sort out what could be dangerous problem.
O’Driscoll shock for Lions
WARREN GATLAND, the British and Irish Lions coach, dropped a huge bombshell on Wednesday before their deciding Rugby Union Test against Australia in Sydney tomorrow (Saturday). Not only has he dumped veteran Irish centre Brian O’Driscoll out the team but has dropped him from the entire squad, just when some thought he would be captaining the side in place of injured Sam Warburton. An unrepentant Gatland said: “When I go back to the UK and say, ‘Did I make the decision because I believed it was right, or did I make it because it was the right political decision?’, I can put my hand on my heart and say I think it is the right rugby decision.” The Lions won the first Test narrowly, and lost out by just one point last Saturday as the Aussies levelled the series.
Murray’s great escape
ANDY MURRAY completed a brilliant Wednesday recovery from two sets down against Fernando Verdasco to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals today (Friday). The 26-year-old Scot looked hopelessly out of sorts on the Centre Court as Verdasco took him apart with powerful serving and heavy hitting to win the first two sets comfortably. But Murray fought back with a 6-1 success in the third, then clawed his way right into to the quarter-final by holding his nerve against the Spaniard in the next set. And that iron nerve and composure saw him clinch the tie 3-2 to earn a place in the last four against 6ft 8in Jerzy Janowicz, who, according to his quarter-final victim and fellow Pole Lukasz Kubot, is “serving bombs”.

TENERIFE will host the 18th World Waterski Championships in Puerto Colon from 5th-15th September.
The event will feature more than 350 competitors and over 50 racing boats from Australia, US, New Zealand, Britain, Belgium, Austria, Holland, France, Germany, Venezuela, Italy and, of course, Spain. American Todd Haig and Australian Wayne Mawer, who won the world title in 2009 and 2011 respectively, are definitely taking part, as well as several other top-flight performers. There are six race categories according to the age and sex of the skiers, and powerboat engines, and the rectangular 5km circuit is based just the other side of the sea wall in Puerto Colon. The course has four turns, the first being at the 2.5km mark after competitors leave Puerto Colon heading towards Los Cristianos. There is a second triangular course of equal distance, with a long straight until the turn buoy at 2.7km. Puerto Colon Yacht Club will act as a hub for the press, organiser’s meetings and drug testing, and the port will become a hive of activity, with all its facilities being fully utilised. Naturally, there will be
additional security for the moored boats, and the area adjacent to the existing boatyard will be transformed for the judges, VIP marquees and food court. The first of four race days kick off on Saturday, 7th September, with a rest day between the other three races The final race takes place a week later on
14th September, and the championship draws to a close with the prizegiving at noon the following day. GF Hoteles are the official World Championship hotel chain, providing accommodation for the teams. Water skiing was invented in 1922 by Ralph Samuelson, who used a pair of boards as skis
and a clothes line as a towrope on Lake Pepin, in Lake City, Minnesota. Samuelson experimented with various different positions on the skis for several days until 2nd 1922 he discovered that leaning backwards in the water with ski tips poking out of the water at the tip was the optimal method.
