Slip, Slap, Slop

OUR Canary Island of Tenerife is enjoying a heatwave at the moment which looks set to continue into next week.

It’s brilliant news for those of you here spending time during the school holidays. August, as you would expect, is our hottest month and normally, at this time of year, the average temperature is 23°C for the whole Island, with temperatures

ranging from 19°C to 26°C depending where you are. The average sea temperature is a pleasant 23°C which, when combined with 10 hours of sunshine each day, makes the perfect conditions for swimming. But in the coming days, however, temperatures are set to soar into the high Thirties; so you’ll need to slip, slap, slop: Slip on a shirt, Slop on the 30+ sunscreen, Slap on a hat. We all enjoy the hot climate, but we also

9th August - 15th August 2013

need to take care, keeping hydrated and not going outdoors when the sun is at its fiercest. Also, do pay particular attention to the young, elderly and animals during the hot spell. The Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has now issued a weather warning throughout the whole of the Canary Islands because of the unusually high temperatures. Today (Friday), we will also experience rough seas in the south-

east and north-west of Tenerife, La Gomera and the south-east and west of Gran Canaria, and waves will be in excess of two metres high. The warning for high temperatures today will initially affect Gran Canaria, where the thermometer may reach 35ºC maximum, but then the heatwave moves to all the islands. Thermometers in some parts of the archipelago are set to reach 38 degrees. As you would imagine,

we’re on a FIRE BAN so, unfortunately, you’re not permitted to go into the forest areas and BBQ because of the risk of forest fire. Thanks to the fantastic summer weather in Tenerife, this season is filled with loads of fiestas and events. Ironically, the planned pilgrimage to Candelaria (see page 6) which begins tomorrow (Saturday) is also in doubt - last year it was postponed because of high temperatures. Local Government,

Red Cross, Civil Defence, Police and others will meet later today to discuss what action, if any, needs to be taken. The Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria attracts thousands of visitors to Candelaria each year. The large church overlooks a rocky beach and is close to nine huge statues of Guanche warriors. And finally, whatever you’re doing, treat the sun with respect and above all, enjoy!

Turtles released

News In Brief German hiker rescued

A 48-YEAR-OLD German woman was rescued by the emergency services on Monday night after suffering a fall while hiking in Teide National Park. The accident occurred at about 11:15 on the Pico Viejo to Los Roques de García path. The GES helicopter took the woman to the heliport at Adeje Fire Station and she was then transferred to Hospiten Sur, in Playa de Las Americas.

Capital cars on holiday

IT’S definitely the summer holidays because of number of cars trudging into Santa Cruz yesterday (Thursday) morning had dropped considerably below 20,000 for the first time in weeks. Just 18,811 vehicles were registered entering the capital.

Rail crash survivors

OF the 178 injured passengers who were helped by emergency services following the Galicia rail crash on 24th July, 41 are still in hospital, with seven still in a critical condition. The last remaining child in intensive care has been moved to a ward and, since last weekend, 13 patients have been given the all-clear to leave hospital. Only one of the 79 fatalities died in the aftermath of the accident, four days after being admitted to hospital in Santiago de Compostela.

Colombians nabbed again

NATIONAL Police have detained a pair of Colombians at Tenerife South Airport on suspicion of drug-trafficking. The two, identified as GHCV, aged 42, and 33-year-old AMOM, were found to be carrying 153 grams of white powder thought to be cocaine, and precision scales. It is understood that the couple are already known to police for similar offences.

ON Thursday an early morning beach clean and turtle release took place on the beach of Los Enojados between Las Galletas and El Fraile in the municipality of Arona. Volunteers collected 120 kilos of rubbísh and La Fundación Neotrópico returned four turtles back to their natural habitat.

WAGE CUTS DAMAGING SAY UNIONS CALLS from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the EU to trim salaries in Spain by 10% have been rejected out of hand by the unions.

The aim is to “stimulate employment”, but union chiefs believe it would only stifle consumer spending even further. Fernando Lezcano, PR manager for the Labourers’ Commission (CCOO) says policies since the start of the financial crisis have been aimed at “national devaluation”. This, he says, includes poorer working conditions and pay, which have proven “ineffective” in helping the country to recover. Lezcano adds: “Not only that but they have actually ended up prolonging it, and cutting salaries further would create even more problems for people on a wage they can barely survive on. “This idea is totally unacceptable because it is not going to get Spain out of recession and because of the additional

suffering it would cause people. “Economic policies aimed at combating the recession have so far been counter-productive, and the CCOO wants to see these geared towards stimulating consumer spending and economic activity, which has to start with salaries and pensions that allow this.” An angry Toni Ferrer, Secretary of Union Action for the General Workers’ Union (UGT), feels the idea of a 10% salary reduction, in exchange for companies pledging to “dramatically increase” the number of employees taken on is “ridiculous”. He adds: “It would condemn Spain to poverty. The neo-liberal policies that have been put in place over the last few years have failed spectacularly. “Dictated to by Europe, the Spanish Government has put in place a labour reform to make it easier and cheaper for firms to axe jobs and worsen conditions and pay for existing employees. “And there are now 600,000 more people on the dole than there were before it came into effect.

“Once inflation has been taken into account, salaries have fallen by 6.3% since 2010 and this has made no difference to the unemployment figures – other than to make them worse by leading to a fall in consumer spending and investment, and aggravating hardship for families in Spain.” The Government continues to defend its labour reform, saying that the drop in jobless figures since June demonstrates that it is working. But research shows that over 91% of new jobs are temporary and part-time only, and have been generated by the summer tourism season, which means they will probably disappear again in September or October. The Spanish Commission for Economy and Occupation (CEOE) has agreed to maintain its wage pact with unions – salary increases of 0.5% in 2012, 0.6% this year and, if the Gross National Product (GNP) does not increase by at least 1% in 2014, to keep salary rises to 0.6% or, where the GNP goes up by between 1-2%, for wage increases not to go beyond 1% next year.

Under Spanish labour law, any proposals concerning salaries have to go through negotiation procedures with the CCOO, UGT and CEOE before they can become binding, Spain currently has one of the lowest minimum wages in the EU, at 645 euros a month gross for a 40-hour working week. Sources from the European Commission say its Economic Vice-President, Finnish MEP Olli Rehn, was stating a personal opinion when he announced that Spain should reduce wages by 10% in exchange for companies promising to “dramatically increase” job offers. But add the EC sources: “His view coincided with that of the International Monetary Fund (FMI) and largely with that of the Commission.” Both bodies also said Social Security contributions made by companies on behalf of their workers needed to fall in order to encourage job creation. But they cited a figure of just 1.7%, which would create little difference in these costs to business-owners and the self-employed.

Smell leads to AN arrest

The editor says...

Email: editor@canarianweekly.com

FIESTA DAY WE’RE slap-bang in the middle of the summer holiday period, with many companies closing for the remainder of August.

National Police agents assigned to the South District Police Station of Santa Cruz de Tenerife have arrested a 32 year-old on suspicion of a crime against public health, growing marijuana on the roof of his house.

The police intercepted the detainee whilst he was walking down a street in Santa Cruz with a large branch of marijuana in his hand. When intercepted by Police, they were able to recover the branch (which he had thrown down) and proceeded

to draw up a report for possession of narcotic substance on the streets. The young man, didn’t have his documents on him and told police that he lived nearby and had his ID card at home, so the Police accompanied him to

obtain his identification. Once in the stairwell of the building, there was a strong odor of marijuana coming from the roof, there they found a plantation composed of fourteen pots containing marijuana plants of various sizes.

Thursday (15th August), sees the annual fiesta day, bank holiday, where many businesses will close for the day (except those in tourist areas) in honour of the Asunción de la Virgen. You will also find some businesses closed on Friday, as a link day, which will then give workers a four-day weekend. The day is a major Catholic Feast Day, celebrated in Catholic countries across the world. Churches observe the day, also referred to as a Holy Day of Obligation. In many Catholic countries, the feast is also marked as The Assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven, informally known as The Assumption - the bodily taking up of the Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her earthly life. The earliest known literary reference to the Assumption dates back to Greek times with the work De Obitu S. Dominae. In the Catholic faith, however, it has always derived the knowledge of the mystery from Apostolic Tradition.

According to some theorists, the origin of the actual feast day itself remains uncertain - the day was probably the anniversary of the dedication of a church, rather than the actual anniversary of death. In the Catholic Church, Mary is given the title “Blessed” in recognition of her assumption to Heaven, and her capacity to intercede on behalf of those who pray to her. Catholic teachings make clear that Mary is not considered divine, and prayers to her are not answered by her but by God. The Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, has a more central role in Roman Catholic teachings and beliefs than in any other major Christian group. Not only do Roman Catholics have more theological doctrines and teachings that relate to Mary, but they have more festivals, prayers, devotional, and venerative practices than any other group. Anyway, enough of the religious education, Thursday is a fiesta day - enjoy!

Valle San Lorenzo Fiesta - THE infant Carnival Queen was chosen on Wednesday evening in Valle San Lorenzo - Sheila Rodríguez Alonso (left). The Gala was hosted by Maribel Risco in the church plaza and attended by Arona Ayuntamiento representative, María Candelaria Padrón (centre). Festivities continue until this weekend. The Cabildo of Tenerife expect to complete next month the work currently taking place in Chirche, in the municipality of Guía de Isora, protecting it against adverse weather conditions. Economic Vice President of the Cabildo, Carlos Alonso, and Is-

land Councillor, Jesus Morales, recently visited the area to monitor the progress of the works, accompanied by the mayor of the town, Pedro Martin, and several other councillors. Last March local roads were affected by rain, affecting accessibility and

the supply of public services. Jesús Morales noted that the state of deterioration in the existing infrastructure “necessitated the urgency of this work in order to restore as soon as possible safe conditions prior, to meteorological event.”

Carlos Alonso explained that the works carried out by the council, have a budget of EUR 240,885 consisting mainly of the construction of a wall with natural stone to protect the local route and the replacement of any damages to the road and utility supplies.”

Candelaria Pilgrimage The Cabildo has held a meeting this week to organise and plan the route of pilgrimage on the Camino Viejo de Candelaria which will take place tomorrow (Saturday).

The meeting was chaired by the Minister of Island Environment, Ana Lupe Mora, and was attended by representatives from the different municipalities participating this year: Candelaria, El Rosario, Santa Cruz, La Laguna and Tacoronte. Mora, stressed the importance of working together, noting that “today, more than

ever, it is necessary to coordinate efforts and to involve society in these endeavours of both environmental and cultural interest.” The Pilgrimage Route of the Camino Viejo de Candelaria start from different points, to the Basilica Our Lady of Candelaria. This activity, which has been

organised since 2004, attempts to link the desire of many people to make pilgrimages to Candelaria on dates close to the celebrations of the patron, using certain paths and roads with heritage value both historical and symbolic, taking in large areas of

great scenic and environmental beauty. The pilgrimage departs from various areas including; Tacoronte, Llano del Moro (El Rosario), La Laguna, y Santa Cruz, to converge on the Camino Viejo, Los Baldíos, Llano del Moro, Machado, Barranco Hondo, e Igueste, and finally Candelaria. The route avoids forest ares, thus the increased risk of fire; if you cast your minds back to last year the event was postponed due to high temperatures. Jobless figures tumbling SPAIN’S jobless total fell in July for the fifth month running. The 64,866 drop is first time the country has experienced such a good run since 2007. The unemployed number now stands at 4,698,814, which is more than double the figure

for July 2012 (27,814 people) and double the average decline in unemployment in historical stats for July (33,008). Engracia Hidalgo, Secretary of State for Employment, stressed that this latest data showed “good behav-

Matadors get stuck into Peru REDUNDANT bullfighters in Spain are heading for Peru in search of work.

They are being driven away by a combination of the economic crisis and ethical protests. The number of bullfights in Spain last year totalled 1,997 nearly half of those recorded since the recession began in 2008. Vicente Royuela, an economist from the University of Barcelona who studies bullfighting, said the figure had already dropped 15% this year. And even before the hard times, just 10% of bullfighters in Spain had more than 20 fights a year - and half of them quit after six years, said Royuela. Star bullfighters can command up to 150,000 euros (£131,000) an appearance, but with 765 registered fighters in Spain, many are struggling to get enough work. And if there is no work

in the ring, there aren’t many jobs around for redundant matadors! Also, the growing number of objections to the sport means there are fewer events. Bullfighting has been outlawed in Catalonia since 2010, and matador

Francisco Torres Jerez said: “For a bullfighter in Spain, the situation is at a second level. “The number of festivals is decreasing, and this is harming our industry.” Nuno Casquinha secured just one

bullfight in the first four months of last year and spent his time raising bulls on the family farm and training. ”Things were so bad, with no bullfighting in Europe, that I decided to take whatever I could,” he said.

His fortunes have improved since he moved to Peru, where bullfights are thriving and he now has 40 fights lined up. “I’m going to leave here a winner, a well-known figure in bullfighting,” he said proudly. “I’ll

make a mark and I won’t return to Europe as a failure,.” He will not be the only one because nearly 60 European matadors are now fighting there -three times more than before the recession started.

Gary is a real Hollywood star! GARY HOLLYWOOD is hardly a household name on TV, yet mention Mrs Brown’s Boys and millions will recognise him instantly.

The Scot, who spent an enjoyable day at Siam Park with friends and family during a recent holiday in Tenerife, plays gay hairdresser Dino Doyle in the Baftawinning BBC show. He is the boyfriend of Mrs Brown’s eldest son Rory - and they make a riotous TV couple. The 33-year-old, who appeared in Taggart as a 12-year-old and Scotland’s top soap, Take the High Road, two years later, is now famous. Seriously famous! Gary first appeared in Mrs Brown’s stage show in 2001, but his agent wasn’t convinced. “She said I should be concentrating on film roles and not touring theatres with Mrs Brown,” he recalled. “Needless to say, not long after she uttered those words, that particular lady was no

longer my agent.” She was not the only critic who failed to understand the huge popularity of the foul-mouthed Irish matriarch (played by series writer Mrs Brown herself/himself, Brendan O’Carroll). Gary added: “It’s hard to believe now, given the global success of the show, but along the way we’ve been continually panned by critics who hate poor old Agnes.” Not so the 11 million viewers, who tune in regularly to the madcap Irish series, and it is no coincidence that the show has collected four major TV awards on top of last year’s Bafta. Plans are afoot for a

film about Mrs Brown’s Boys, and they have been touring extensively this year. Gary still can’t quite get over the adulation, and why longestablished stars want to be photographed alongside him at the various showbiz functions he attends these days. And by the way, however much he minces around on TV, he definitely does not go for men! In fact, the nice-guy Scot has been happily married to Sharon for 10 years and they have two boys, Jack and Charlie. But don’t tell Rory Brown.

WITH the holiday season back in full swing, we thought it would be a good time to review Bianco Bistro, in Los Cristianos.

It is situated in the Pasarella shopping centre, and you will find it at the back of the centre next to El Mirador. The Bistro is the family-friendly sister restaurant of the famous Bianco restaurant. It is also a part of the popular Venture Restaurants Group, which includes Imperial Tai Pan, Empire, Thai Bothanico, Restaurant 88 and Bianco. That means you can get the majority of those famous Bianco speciality pastas and pizzas (all available in smaller child-friendly sizes), a dedicated children’s menu and Bianco Bistro’s very own section of specials. All are available at very reasonable prices, and all dished with that great attentive and friendly service for which all Venture Restaurants are known. As most of you are already familiar with the Bianco dishes, we opted for the Bianco Bistro section of the menu. This is made up of

Stromboli (Meat Feast or Chicken & Bacon), Pizza Rolls (Fillet Steak or Tuna Melt), Gourmet Italian Cheeseburger and Chicken Burgers. The Strombolis are a spin on a Calzone pizza with the delicious toppings inside the folded-over base, Meat Feast is packed with fillet steak, pepperoni, mortadella ham, onions and oregano. The Chicken & Bacon contains chunks of chicken breast and crispy bacon - both absolutely delicious. The Pizza Rolls are also fantastic, and you can choose from tender fillet steak with garlic, tomato and herbs, or tuna and melted cheese. Both are served with coleslaw all wrapped up in soft pizza-base roll. To complete the menu,

there are two burgers available, both homemade. The Beef Burger is made with 100% lean beef, topped with mozzarella, tomato and basil. The chicken burger is topped with coleslaw, and both are served on home-made buns. We had decided to share the burger and chicken burger, but it was a struggle to get me to surrender the other half of my burger as I can honestly say it’s one of the best I have ever had! All the portions are very big, and all come with chips and salad for ONLY 8.95 euros, so that’s a full meal in a great restaurant with fantastic service for less than nine euros. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, who laughed and joked

with the kids. They all genuinely looked to be enjoying their work, which made all the difference to our evening. We also decided to take advantage of their amazing offer on their delicious cocktails. At Bianco Bistro every Friday, from 4-7pm, you get two for only seven euros. Additionally, they also have live music from 8pm every Friday, which was a nice surprise. So if you want a great value-for-money meal, check out Bianco Bistro in Los Cristianos. I would recommend it without hesitation for families, couples and get-togethers. You will not be disappointed, and we will certainly be going back! For reservations, call 922 788 872.

Calls by mobile cost a fortune MOBILE phone users in Spain are charged more per minute than most other people in the European Union.

In fact, the average 13.3 cents is the fourth-highest tariff in the EU. The European Commission (EC) says prices between the 28 member States vary by as much as 774% from 14.7 cents per minute in The Netherlands to 1.9 cents in Lithuania. Neelie Kroes, the Commission’s Vice-President, says there is no relation between price, quality of service or level of buying power in customers. After The Netherlands, Luxembourg and Belgium are the most expensive countries in the EU to make a telephone call, at an average of 14.6 and 13.8 cents respectively. Based upon mobile-tomobile calls, prices per minute range from 12.7 cents in France and 9.7 cents in the UK to 8.8 cents in Germany and 6.9 cents in Italy. International calls on a mobile are cheaper in Spain, at an average of 65 cents per minute, than in Belgium, where custom-

ers spend 97 cents, or Germany at 75 cents. But mobile calls abroad from Britain cost an astonishing 1.19 euros per minute. France, Italy and Hungary charge just 35 cents per minute for an overseas call from a mobile phone. Ms Kroes says telecommunications customers are “not benefiting from the common European market” the way they should do, with uniform prices, and adds: “It is essential for the EU to develop this in order to ensure a truly connected continent.”. She says there is little difference in the cost of basic goods between the 28 member States, with a litre of milk averaging between 6999 cents in any of the countries. And despite the vast disparities in calling costs from country to country, the price of buying an iPad varies by around 11% per cent within the EU. Ms Kroes plans to put forward her findings and a package aimed at consolidating a single telecommunications market at a Commission meeting next month.

Runaway French girl is laughing at the law HOW’S this for cheek? A French au pair, on the run from UK police, continues to update her Facebook profile and still offers her services as a nanny.

Emeline Essertel is wanted by South Wales detectives after failing to appear in court in March to face charges relating to fraud, a debit card theft and possessing CS gas. A debit card was stolen from the family home in which she was living during the latter part of January. The 24-year-old had been bailed to an address in London, but fled back to France. Officers launched an appeal for information last month and, since then, Emeline’s Facebook profile has been updated several times. In addition to uploading photographs of a rugby final in Dublin between two French sides, images of a two-week break in

Amsterdam and a night out with friends have also been posted. An advert on a recruitment website, which she last logged into on 16th April, said: “It will be eight months since I returned to France to complete my nursing degree and I would (like to) go back to see other countries to learn new cultures and be able to speak English (as soon as) possible. “I want to assure you (of) my experience with children. During my studies, I was able to do

internships in various hospitals, primary schools and retirement homes.” She appeared at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on 31st January charged with one count of theft, one count of fraud by false representation and one count of possession of a weapon. Proceedings were adjourned, with Emeline released on bail until 20th March. A few weeks later, posts started to appear on her Facebook page detailing her trips to

Dublin and Amsterdam. South Wales Police are said to be pursuing all lines of inquiry “in south Wales, London and France”. A spokesman added: “Essertel had been working as an au pair in Llantwit Major, in the Vale of Glamorgan. “We are appealing for information as to her whereabouts and ask anyone who can assist us with our inquiries to get in touch,” he added. The Frenchwoman is 5ft 6in with short, straight brown hair and brown eyes.

Kidnapper’s home demolished ONE of the three women kidnapped by Ariel Castro watched the home in which they had been held for more than a decade being demolished this week.

And Michelle Knight told a crowd of onlookers outside the East Cleveland house that she hoped it would act as a symbol of hope. She was held against her will and repeatedly raped by the 53-yearold, and, together with Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus, they were kept behind locked doors and chained by their ankles. It took about 20 minutes to tear down the property as part of a

Page 12

plea deal which spared Castro a possible death sentence and allowed him to be jailed for life, plus 1,000 years, instead. Miss Knight, who last week made a powerful and moving statement to the court sentencing

Castro, said she did not want to be defined by the horrors that had gone on at the house. She said: “Nobody was there for me when I was missing, and I want the people out there to know, including the

mothers, that they can have strength, they can have hope, and their child will come back.” Incredibly, prosecutors said Castro cried when he signed over the house deeds and mentioned his “many

happy memories” there with the women. As the house crumbled, Cuyahoga County prosecutor Tim McGinty told the crowd: “This was one evil guy.” In court last week, Miss Knight told Castro:

“You took 11 years of my life away and I have got it back. I spent 11 years in hell. “Now your hell is just beginning. I will overcome all that has happened, but you will face hell for eternity.” The three women, aged 20, 16 and 14 when they were snatched, escaped from the house on 6th May when Miss Berry and her six-yearold daughter managed to break free after removing part of the front door and calling to a neighbour for help. The demolition and clearing of the site will be completed swiftly, and the building materials will be shredded to prevent rubble being sold online as socalled “murderabilia”, although no one was killed at the home.

Police pounce on murder suspect A 39-YEAR-OLD man from Merseyside, suspecting of killing a fatherof-two in Spain, was arrested by armed police on Tuesday night.

Darren O’Flaherty had just finished celebrating his birthday at a Chinese restaurant and was held at gunpoint just after settling his bill at Fu’s restaurant in Caernarfon, North Wales. O’Flaherty, formerly from Kirkby, was the prime suspect in the Costa del Sol killing of Irishman John O’Neill, who was shot dead in a bar in Benalmadena in 2010. He was also wanted by the Spanish authorities over two attempted murders - and by Yorkshire police after a lorry driver was kidnapped at knifepoint in 2006. A delighted Dave Allen, head of the Fugitives Unit at the Serious Organised Crime Agency, said: “Darren O’Flaherty was out cel-

ebrating with his friends - but law enforcement had planned a birthday surprise.” Mr O’Neill, 40, was on a dream family holiday with his partner and their two young children. They were in the resort, near Torremolinos

when, during a night out in a popular bar, Mr O’Neill stepped in after two strangers began rowing over a queue for the toilet. One of the pair was thrown out by bar staff, but he returned a short time later with a gun and shot Mr O’Neill in

front of friends. At that time, O’Flaherty was also wanted by police in Yorkshire after a lorry driver was held at knifepoint while his £400,000 cargo of electronics was stolen in 2006. O’Flaherty was jailed at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on

Wednesday after admitting driving while disqualified in 2008. Police spotted him driving a Porsche Cayenne near his Kirkby home. District judge Miriam Shelvey told him: “You were banned by a court and you chose to ignore

that ban and have been outstanding on a warrant for several years.” O’Flaherty was sentenced to three months for the driving offences and a further two months for failing to answer bail. A Merseyside Police spokesman said: “O’Flaherty was the subject of SOCA’s Operation Captura publicity campaign, seeking wanted fugitives in Spain. “Spanish authorities want to speak to him about the shooting of a man in Torremolinos in July, 2010, and two attempted murder charges. “He is also the subject of a European arrest warrant for a kidnap offence committed against an HGV driver in North Yorkshire in October 2006. “O’Flaherty appeared before magistrates for a minor driving offence committed on Merseyside. “Other court proceedings regarding the more serious offences will now follow in Yorkshire.”

Mafia chief held - after 19 years! A SICILIAN Mafia boss, said to have been connected with Tenerife, has been captured in London after 19 years on the run.

Spain sees heaviest baby yet, and she’s got a British mum A BRITISH mum-of-three has given birth to the biggest-ever baby born naturally in Spain.

The baby girl called Maria Lorena Marin weighed 13½lb - about twice the size of an average baby. And 40-year-old Maxime Marin did not even need an epidural - a painkiller delivered into the spine during childbirth - at the Hospital Marina Salud, in Denia, Alicante. Maxime said she was in “perfect health” following the straightforward delivery. The baby was born after 41 weeks and Maxime said she expected it to be “big, but not that big” as her three other children

Page 14

each weighed nearly 10lbs at birth. As for the five-hour labour, that was “simple”, while the baby’s Colombian father, Jaime Marin, said everything went well. Dr Javier Rius, head of gynaecology at the hospital, said he had never known a baby born naturally to weigh so much in all his 40 years of practice. Earlier this year, a Californian woman gave birth to a child weighing even more than Maria. Jayden Sigler was 13lb 14oz when he was delivered by Caesarean section. And George King became one of the heaviest babies born naturally in England when he came into the world earlier this year weighing 15½lb.

Domenico Rancadore, 64, described by Italian media as the most influential Mafia man in Palermo, was arrested on Wednesday evening at the Uxbridge home he shared with his wife. Scotland Yard said he had been living under the name of Marc Skinner and the arrest came 19 months after the Italians first lodged a European Arrest Warrant, in January 2012. Rancadore, a former PE teacher in Sicily, went on the run in 1994, shortly after the capture of Cosa Nostra’s boss of bosses, Salvatore ‘Toto’ Riina, and just two years after the murders of anti-Mafia judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino. A number of supergrasses, including Mafiosi Gaetano Lima and Salvatore Barbagallo, subsequently named Rancadore as a “dangerous” Cosa Nostra figure with links to London and Tenerife. Yet he was described by an Uxbridge woman who lived in the same road as “one of the best neighbours you could ever have”. Rancadore, reputedly head of the Mafia in the municipality of Trabia, was sentenced to seven

years in his absence for links to the crime organisation. His wife is believed to be the daughter of a former Italian consul to London, and their two children, aged in their 30s, are both thought to have been born in the UK. The Italians said he had an outstanding jail sentence of seven years for participation in Mafia association between 17th December 1987 and 13th April 1995 in Palermo, Italy. “We are putting another fugitive Mafia boss behind bars,” said Angelino Alfano, the Italian Interior Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, who expressed “deep gratitude” to the British and Italian police investigators for Rancadore’s arrest.

“Applause and thanks to all the law enforcement agencies for having brought to justice one of the most dangerous fugitives still in circulation,” said Deputy Interior Minister Philip Bubbico. “It was a brilliant operation, accomplished thanks to the hard work of the police and judiciary, and the international co-operation given by Interpol. “Today has allowed us to take another important step in the battle against the Mafia and organised crime.” Informants revealed a few weeks ago that Rancadore was allegedly managing his Mafia affairs from London, where he was supporting his lifestyle using an Italian public pension, according to reports.

The Italians had been frustrated that the Metropolitan Police had earlier refused to move on the alleged mobster, according to reports last year. He was accused of extortion and other crimes in his native Italy, they said. Joan Hills, 76, who lives in Manor Waye, Uxbridge said she knew Racadore as Marc Skinner and his family had lived in the road for several years. “I know him very well and he’s one of the best neighbours you could ever have,” she said. “They have been here for years. I’ve seen the children grow up with my children. I don’t know the ins and outs of this, but they are the nicest people that you could wish to meet.”

All-Inclusives The tourists arrived, but where are they?

The local press has in the past few days been full of news that tourism in the archipelago is improving. The data prepared by the Research Department of the Chamber of Commerce of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, claims in a statement that traditional airlines transported to the islands 1,183,174 foreign tourists in the second quarter of the year, representing an increase of 56.4 percent. But the low-cost airlines appear to have suffered a drop of 26.2 percent transporting a total of 1,011,015 visitors. In addition, spending appears to have increase by 7.5 percent. Another positive is the average stay of tourists in the islands, which was 2 percent higher than a year ago, and the number of overnight stays, which increased by 1.8 percent. The occupancy rate rose by 3.5 points from a year ago and standing in June at 66.4 percent occupancy, 8.3 points higher than the national average occupation. The Chamber of Commerce stressed the importance of continually striving to reduce airport charges in order to keep operational, the number of flights, and the evolution of the number of passengers transported by low-cost carriers. Vice President of the Chamber of commerce, Santiago Sese, said: “the Canary Islands air connectivity should be a strategic objective because it is essential to promote the arrival of more tourists and thus, maintaining employment and creating new jobs. He recalled that the tourism sector affects all economic sectors of the islands, from the trade itself to construction. Also, he believes that destination competitiveness will depend heavily on the investments made in the sector to improve its excellence. One line of develop-

The follow-up

ment is for greater impetus to be put on language training plans for all those professionals involved in tourism. According to the vice president of the Chamber of Commerce “knowledge of other languages, which is currently a major gap that detects when the business of hiring, improve the employability of the Canaries”. These figures are all well and good, but physically where are these tourists that are so say arriving in their droves? Last week we ran the first article about All Inclusive, here is a just a small selection of the comments I received. “The hotel next to me was always only 10% full, its now thriving as it has gone all inc, with other options available. all inc will bring many here for the first time as egypt seems a risky holiday atm. As we seen in the timeshare years,70% of tourists return to tenerife. many of the new to tenerife guests will return, many will choose not to be all inc.” “have been open here in las americas since

1982, and this summer, so far ,must be the worst ever. Retail trade globally is suffering, but what is hurting us, is that the 3 nearby hotels, bouganville playa, gran tenerfie and las dalias, seem to “keep in” their clients,it is like a ghost town during daylight hours. but ,we look at it from the other side too, we hear very disgruntled tourists moaning about being constantly hassled,in the streets, for, food, drink, massage services and most recently excursions,so it´s all a bit chicken and the egg really, So who is to blame? adeje council and costas have almost killed off any passing trade for us, due to the addition of a “cyclist” ramp along the paseo maritimo (geranium walk) and this “boom” of fully inclusive hotels and non-shopping tourists may be the final nail in the coffin.” “It seems the quality of the new breed of AI are not keeping up standards either, which

adds to the wrong impression of the island over all. Dined out in Callao last night and at least 30 diners while we were in, had wrist bands on. Staying at nearby hotel (recently changed to AI) they were not impressed with food or entertainment, however all went back to the hotel afterwards as they had already ‘paid’ for the drinks so might as well get the money worth from there. Bar around the corner, where we went for a quick drink afterwards, sold 4 half pints dorada all night (apart from us). Hopefully next time the diners will go B&B and will put all their spending money into the community.” “Being a small bar/cafeteria owner in playa de las americas Tenerife,it must be said that the all-inclusive is having a very bad reflection financially and Tenerife as a holiday destination island, but it is not just the small/medium size businesses which are hurting/suffering,but also the big business as well, starting with financial side, breweries as well as the food suppliers who supply the all -inclusive hotels & complexes, these people are being asked to supply the cheapest/ low grade products at such a low price that the profit margin is so small that they are just turning money over, you only have to read tripadvisor, holiday watchdog, facebook etc to find evidence that all-

inclusive is not a good deal, far from it,asking people to eat & drink low grade products is a recipe for disaster. Bars and restaurants have always been the place where discussions (good things as well as bad things)amongst tourists take place, some people staying in all-inclusive,say “never again will they do it”,as the food is so bad and that they ate outside of the all-inclusive,also they are saying drinks beer etc are watered down so much that they could drink non-stop all day and night without feeling a hangover effect the next day. To sum up,people were eating/drinking outside AI hotels/complexes in bars/restaurants, which became a strain on their finances after paying upfront for AI and alas leading to a bad and expensive experience, saying that they “would not return to tenerife” even doing self catering or other etc. As stated in your canarian weekly issue 815,shops,bars,restaur ants, excursions, tipping ,car rental, taxi drivers, all the way down to the public transport are being effected. Some people book there holidays on s/catering,h/board or f/board, at these hotels/ complexes,to find that check in on arrival, they are also offered allinclusive either on a daily or weekly rate,at a rate which bars/restaurants cannot compete against, but when AI hotels/complexes (not

all of them),offer an open bar to people not even staying there, then outside of the allinclusive, all other businesses are in real trouble big time.It apprears you only have to ask for an A/I licence and it is given, without regard to local businesses.” “just read your artical on the all inclusives i work at a restraunt here and it is killing a lot of restraunts and bars and a lot of people are losing there jobs i am one of many who is ready to protest and march the streets. CorreCT me if i am right or wrong but did you print an artical last year where it was stated that the mayor said 2013 only five star hotels can do all inclusive cos nothing has happened if you want my opinion and the same goes for a lot of people the answer to all this is that the hotels are not making any money from all inclusives but are leting the tour operators control them so why dont the hotels stand upto them and say no then the hotels can just give cheaper accomadation to the holiday makers with no free food and no free drinks this way the hotels can then make profit that way you will have the holiday makers going out and spending in the restraunts and bars and shops and public transport this will create more jobs for evryone the tour operators need to change there system for this to work”

World News TWO British teenagers have had acid thrown in their faces on the island of Zanzibar.

The girls, both 18 and voluntary teachers, were attacked by two men on a moped late at night as they walked through the streets of Stone Town, the historical centre of the capital. The acid splashed their faces, chests, backs and hands and they were flown to hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, for treatment. Happily,

they have now been discharged and their injuries are “not life-threatening”. They were attached to the volunteering organisation i-to-i and had been out there on a four-week trip. The teenagers, Katie Gee and Kirstie Trup,

thought to be from London, had been set to return home tomorrow (Saturday) from the island, which is a popular destination for volunteering gap-year travellers. Deputy Police Commissioner Mkadam Khamis said: “Police

have launched a manhunt, and we ask for public assistance in identifying the attackers. The motive for the attack has not been established.” The i-to-i organisation said in a statement: “We will await the report from the lo-

cal authorities in Zanzibar before any comment can be made. “The female clients had been volunteer teachers on Zanzibar and were in the final week of their trip. “The safety of our customers is of paramount importance to us, and

our own investigation will be launched as soon as it is possible to do so.” The girls’ parents have been informed and the teenagers are now expected to fly back on Thursday. The assault is the first against foreigners in the popular tourist destination. It occurred at the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan as people began to celebrate the Eid holiday. A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are aware of an incident and are providing consular assistance.”

Newport’s ‘growing’ drug problem PROUD Newport has won the prestigious Wales In Bloom competition seven times. Yet some residents believe the council should be spending less time on the plants and more time trying to grow local business. And that is why, perhaps, officials in the cathedral city are keeping an eye out for a mischievous gardener,

who has been putting cannabis plants into council pots. At least 30 of the illegal plants were photographed in the flower displays close to the city’s castle and high street. However, by the time council gardeners were told about them, they had disappeared. Steve Reynolds, who owns a shop in the indoor market, said he

smelled the plants before he saw them. ”Walking into work, I would see the council there with their vans, watering the plants every morning,” he said. “So whoever planted them also had the advantage of the council tending them.” Another shopkeeper, Dean Beddis, took photos of the plants before they disappeared.

He told Sky News: “It was the fact that they were in the Newport Council official plant pots with the Newport logo on. “Where they were and what they were planted in was the funny aspect of it. It made us smile.” The rogue plants have now disappeared, and a Newport City Council spokesman told Sky News it had been un-

able to find evidence of the plants. “The photographs appear to show mature plants added to a council planter,” he said, “Although this could be a hoax, it is a serious issue and we have informed the police and are checking CCTV cameras for additional evidence.” Some residents have suggested the

cannabis plants may have been a stunt to embarrass council officials. Gwent Police told Sky News: “Now that the plants have apparently disappeared, it’s difficult to determine whether they were, in fact, illegal cannabis plant and, if so, whether they had been deliberately planted for cultivation.”

Former airline chief takes on Lidl and Co SIR Stelios HajiIoannou, who founded low-cost airline easyJet, is planning a lowcost food retail business to undercut budget supermarkets Aldi and Lidl.

The Greek-born entrepreneur will start in Croydon, Surrey, hoping to cash in on the cheapest end of the grocery market. His new company, easyFoodstore ,which will focus on a limited range of tinned and packet foods, already has a website, e a s y Fo o d s t o r e . c o m and it promises to be “coming soon”. Sir Stelios, still a major eastJwt shareholder, said: “I have a feeling that there is a gap in

the food retail market - a niche below some of the current budget operators such as Aldi and Lidl. “Concentrating on affordable, basic ‘nobrand-name’ packet and tinned foods at bargain prices, easyFoodstore

underlines the need for additional reliable day-to-day provision of basic foodstuffs.” Sir Stelios said that the business could be expanded next year by taking advantage of weak property prices to take over freehold retail

sites. Current retail figures suggest the UK grocery market has the strongest sales at the top and bottom ends Waitrose doing well on one side and Aldi and Lidl on the other. Sir Stelios, a popular entrepreneur, said the

venture was still at an very early stage. His pilot store will open on the ground floor of a nine-storey building in Croydon, which will also accommodate his easyHotel, easyOffice and easyGym businesses. He remains a forth-

right, major shareholder in EasyJet, recently objecting to management plans to buy a fleet of new Airbus aircraft. And he threatens to take directors to court if the move destroys shareholder value.

On guard! Titan’s new home ONE of our special dogs has found a home at long last - and he is in his element!

Titan, an 18-month-old Rottweiler who seemed destined to a life at the refuge because of his breed and nature has been adopted by the Ministry of Defence in Santa Cruz. After several exhaustive tests concerning his health and condition, all of which he passed, he has started a new life at the military base, training to be a guard dog. The trainers are really happy with him and he is settling in really well to his new working life. Hopefully, other large breeds of dogs from the refuge will join him. The Spanish Military are also aware of the dire situation

regarding abandoned dogs here in Tenerife, so their decision to use abandoned dogs instead of buying specially-bred ones is also a step in the right direction. They have their own vets and the dogs receive exceptional care and training, as well as a new meaning to their lives, and we are all delighted for Titan. On another happy note, our first Pamper a Pooch Day, held on Sunday, was a huge success. The dogs had a great time walking down to the beach, followed by a cool-down in the refuge’s paddling pool, built especially for them. Then it was time for some serious pampering as the dogs enjoyed a few well-deserved treats. And two lucky dogs even found new homes so, all in all, it

EasyJet cabin crews fly high in style stakes Passengers of easyJet, the UK’s largest airline, will be greeted onboard by cabin crew in stylish new attire designed by designer Jeff Banks and his team of corporate wear specialists.

A choice of six new pieces has been added for the airline’s over 4000 cabin crew to choose from in addition to the current uniform worn onboard easyJet’s 1300+ daily flights serving over 30 countries after a comprehensive design, trial and production period of six months. It is the first time since 2007 that easyJet has updated its cabin crew uniform. With over 3,000 female cabin crew and almost 1,500 males ranging be-

tween the ages of 18 and 68 years of age, the new easyJet uniform has been put together with style and comfort in mind. The end result is an easy to wear collection of sharp tailoring and flattering styles which will suit all

shapes, sizes and ages of easyJet cabin crew. EasyJet teamed-up with design consultant Jeff Banks at corporate wear specialists ICW Incorporatewear for the new look, outlining the importance of creating a uniform which would

Who packs the trousers? Less than half of all men (44%) usually pack their own holiday suitcases, with a shocking 6% admitting they have NEVER packed their own bag, our latest survey has revealed. We found that even when it comes to business trips, a massive 27% of men say their partner still packs their bag for them. While over a third (35%) say it is because their partners know they will forget things otherwise, one in ten admits it’s because they are too lazy to pack for themselves and a further 10% say it is because they ask them to. However, it appears that women may not be packing for their partners completely altruistically; while a third of the women who pack for their partners say it’s because they believe they are better at it, almost a fifth said they like doing it. One in ten admit it’s because they like to control what

Page 20

their partner wears and 13% said they want to smuggle their own belongings into their partner’s case. The survey also revealed they have good reason to want to steal some of their partner’s luggage space with 56% of women surveyed admitting they pack more than their partner and just 12% stating their partner packs more than them. When sharing a suitcase, 45% of women said they get more space than their

partners, compared to just 6% of men. This extra luggage may be one of the reasons why women start packing much sooner than men; 35% of women start packing a few days or more in advance of their trip compared to 20% of men, while a whopping 44% of men are lastminute packers, packing their bags the night before or just a few hours before the holiday (compared to 30% of women).

reflect the vibrance and spirit of the easyJet brand and the famous easyJet orange in a contemporary twist on classic styles to look smart and professional. Over 100 cabin crew from across easyJet’s network were then cho-

sen for a series of ‘wearer trial’ tests in which they judged the new uniform on categories of design style and comfort, wash and wear performance, easyJet branding and customer reaction. The crew then gave their feedback on the new uniform, commenting on its look, feel, style, durability and whether fit for purpose after each wear onboard, shaping the decision-making process throughout. The successful trial resulted in the addition of two dresses complimented by a new longer scarf, leather belt and leather handbag for ladies and a stylish new look waistcoat and tie for gents which have been voted a huge success by easyJet’s cabin crew and passengers alike. Angela Mullen, easyJet’s Cabin Crew Service & Standards Manager said: “We are absolutely

thrilled with the new easyJet cabin crew uniform. Our crew are the face of the airline and it’s essential that they look and feel professional, presentable and confident in their uniforms every time they wear them. The new additions are stylish yet practical enabling them to go about their duties comfortably and I’m sure they’ll be worn with pride. Jeff Banks and the team at ICW Incorporatewear have done a great job!” Jeff Banks, ICW’s Consultant Designer said: “Incorporatewear and I are absolutely delighted to have had the opportunity to work on developing easyJet’s new uniform. It looks absolutely fantastic and is a credit to the easyJet brand and reflects the importance the company gives to the appearance, well-being and comfort of its cabin crew.”

Dubrovnik islands worth a visit After a decade of attempts, Croatia has joined the EU, with the country’s president describing the event as Croatia’s “return to the European Family”.

It is expected that the move will pave the way for Croatia to continue its drive to increase tourism. As the Union’s 28th member, the country’s relaxing of its entry process is set to make things easier for British visitors taking cheap flights to Split, Hajduk and Dubrovnik. Any boost to tourism will only add to the increase in visitor numbers seen over recent years. One of the country’s main flight hubs, Zagreb Airport, for example, saw a rise of 8.8 per cent in people passing through in the months leading to March. Also, in

2012, well over 330,000 Britons visited the country, representing a massive 24 per cent increase on the previous year’s figure. To celebrate the announcement, London has embraced the ‘Welcome Croatia’ event. President Josipović spoke to the festival’s official website about his country’s popularity rise, saying: “I can state with pleasure that this year we have had one of the most successful tourist seasons with a significant increase in

the number of British tourists. “I am positive that this [Welcome Croatia] festival will be an additional motivation for the British to explore this ‘small country for a great holiday’ and to accept Croatia as their future favourite tourist destination.” Jet2.com, have provided further boosts for Croatia’s economy by offering cheap flights to Split and Dubrovnik, and passengers will now also benefit from improved medical cover with the EHIC card.

“He knows he’s a man on the run and he clearly has no intention of doing anything about it. Nigel runs – where’s he going to run to? He needs to be brought back and serve his time.” - Maureen Burnell, wife of fugitive Nigel Burnell This new documentary features a manhunt attempting to track down three wanted criminals so they can be brought to justice. Presenters Mark Williams-Thomas and Natasha Kaplinsky show how their undercover team trace and with the help of the police, apprehend fugitives who are running from the law. On The Run includes high-octane scenes as the team and police units close in on the three wanted men. One is a sex offender, one a violent fugitive, another is a burglar and car thief. They have gone to ground after fleeing outstanding arrest warrants, jumping bail or breaking their licence conditions. Using a variety of undercover stings and subterfuge, this programme shows in vivid detail how these criminals are traced and how police go about catching them. It also brings into sharp focus the

difficulty in arresting a wanted British criminal in Portugal - even though he is the subject of an international arrest warrant. The three criminals being hunted are: Rico Persechino, who didn’t stick to his curfew after being convicted for burglary. Together with two associates he stole cars and is traced to the centre of a leafy Surrey town by Mark and the team. Nigel Burnell, a sex offender from South Wales who went on the run to Portugal, breaching a court order. A member of the undercover team tracks him down to a bar in the Algarve. Lukasz Sawicki, who failed to appear in court for a charge of sexual assault and is wanted in Poland for threats to kill after being convicted in his absence. Mark and the team call in a financial investigator in a bid to track him down and eventually find him in South London. The manhunt begins on the trail of Rico Persechino, who is tracked down via Facebook, where he has set up an account in the Mafia-style name of ‘Rico Don Percy’, which shows he is still in contact with his associates. The

team uses a false name - Lucy Cooper - to befriend him and gain access to his friends and pictures. Mark , a former police detective, says: “Through the Facebook account, I made the decisive breakthrough. I cultivated a contact close to Persechino. This person knows some of his movements since he went on the run.” Detective Inspector John Turner of the Met Police explains how they tried to trace Persechino after he went on the run: “We knocked on doors of his friends, family and associates. Officers would be dispatched to addresses which he frequented, where his family lived. We were trying to shake the tree if you like, to see if his family friends or people he had fallen out with would contact police and tell us where he was.” After a tip-off, Persechino is followed to Epsom town centre, leading to tense moments as Mark and the team prepare for a takedown with police. The team then travels to the Algarve on the trail of Nigel Burnell, and finds him in a karaoke bar where he reveals to an undercover reporter that he works in a strip club occasionally,

‘doing the music’. Mark asks the Portuguese police to arrest him as Burnell is the subject of an international arrest warrant. But the Portuguese police say they are unaware of the warrant and cannot arrest him. Mark describes how frustrating he finds the situation: “This is a man who has been on the run for a long time, he’s out there unable to be caught because of an administrative issue. The worst case scenario of course is that he goes on his toes and he goes missing again.” His wife Maureen tells Natasha she thought he was the perfect husband - until he was arrested for a sex offence: “He was the type of guy that everybody loved. We had lots of friends. Everybody loved him. Everybody called him Taff. Everybody loved him. Totally disgusted that I could have been conned by a man like that and it’s left me with a wall that I build and I don’t let anybody over that wall. It’s not a nice feeling and he’s not a nice person.” Having given the police a fortnight to arrest Burnell, Mark returns to the Algarve after hearing he is still at large, in an attempt to confront him.

They are also joined by 2010 finalist Christine Hamilton; all three know exactly what standards to expect. With their last chances to impress their way to the next round, emotions in the kitchen are running high and the pressure proves too much for some contestants. The celebrity guest judges deliver some frank and cutting responses to some dishes, but others fare much better in the firing line. Only the best can go through to the final eight and become a step closer to winning the title of Celebrity MasterChef 2013. For those who don't make the grade, the journey ends here.

Natural World Sri Lanka: Elephant Island BBC2 18:00

Wildlife cameraman Martyn Colbeck travels to Sri Lanka, to meet the tropical island's elephants. A sub species of the Asian elephant, these elephants have their own unique characteristics. Martyn has planned his arrival to coincide with the start of the monsoon, hoping it will be the best time to find and follow a new born calf. By drawing on local knowledge, Martyn begins to unravel the complex social world of Sri Lanka's elephants - he witnesses a fight over a calf, a battle between two bulls in musk and, at an elephant sanctuary, befriends an orphaned elephant who sadly lost a leg to a snare and is facing an uncertain future.

Amy Adams and Matthew Goode star in this transatlantic romcom from Shopgirl and Red Riding director Anand Tucker. Anna is living a contented life in Boston, or she would be, if only her heart surgeon boyfriend - currently working in Dublin would pop that all-important question. Deciding that she's waited long enough, and encouraged by her Irish father, who reminds her of the tradition of women proposing to their beloved on the 29th of February, she hops on a plane to Ireland. However, the Emerald Isle's weather defeats even her steely determination and forces the flight to land on the other side of the country from the capital. Now she has limited time to get to Dublin, a long way to go and a pub-owner-cum-taxi driver, Declan, who, though handsome, is a little too testy for her liking.

BBC1, 20.30 Last year, one in six of us were victims of crime, but new BBC One series Fightback Britain shows how the great British public are refusing to take this lying down and are helping the police fight back against the criminals. Presenters Julia Bradbury and Adrian Simpson show how people throughout Britain are making life tough for the bad guys by capturing evidence for the police using the latest cameras, computer software, amateur detective work and sometimes even putting their own lives in danger. In the first episode of this four-part series we meet the lorry drivers who bravely step in to try and avert disaster when a 30-tonne lorry hurtles down a motorway in the wrong direction, and a gang of weapon-wielding motorbike thieves gets more than it bargained for when a group of shop owners bands together to stop the theft of £50,000-worth of motorcycles. We meet a man whose computer software enabled his stolen laptop to email him pictures of the people it ultimately wound up with as they sat unawares in bed, before being arrested by the police! And Julia and Adrian test the latest anti-theft software for your smart phone. With almost half of all robberies in Britain now involving a mobile phone, it could help you get your own back on the phone snatchers. And finally we meet a woman who is so tired of getting her knickers stolen from her washing line she sets a trap using night vision cameras to catch the thief in act and hang him out to dry, only to be thwarted initially by her husband falling asleep on the job!

Food Facts and Fiction: Tonight - Where Does Our Food Come From? ITV1, 20:00

First in a four-part Tonight special which examines where our food comes from, what it contains, and the impact it has on the nation's health. In the wake of the horsemeat scandal earlier this year, Jonathan Maitland asks how much we really know about the food we eat, and questions whether our attitude to food has changed. Food manufacturers do not have to provide country of origin labelling for the meat in their ready meals and other processed foods, but in a survey of 2,000 people conducted for this programme, 65 per cent said they wanted to know where those meat products did come from. Jonathan Maitland goes into the food processing business himself and creates a traditional British lamb hotpot - which is not all that it seems.

Anita Rani travels to Mumbai to investigate the obesity epidemic engulfing India's growing middle class. She meets some of India's overweight teenagers who can't stop bingeing on western fast foods, including 13-year-old Kaleb who weighs more than 15 stone. Regulation of the fast food industry is much looser than in Western countries and wealthy Indians are susceptible to the lure of advertising and the promise of a western lifestyle. And now that the international fast-food chains and their Indian imitators are opening up branches beyond the big cities in India, the obesity problem is set to explode into a national pandemic.

India’s Super sized kids BBC2, 21.00

Anita Rani explores the unexpected crisis of obesity that’s unfolding in India. As the country’s economy grows and a new middle class emerges, the national waistline is swelling too. And those at greatest risk are India’s children. Indian kids are from relatively privileged families are experiencing a lifestyle revolution and getting a taste for western-style fast food. In an hour-long documentary for This World. Anita travels to Mumbai and Pune to meet some of India’s fattest teenagers, some weighing more than 15 stone, including 13-year-old Kaleb whom Anita accompanies as he undergoes gastric band surgery. Shocked by their daily diet of fatty meals, Anita meets the author of India’s first study of junk food. He explains the cruel irony that prosperity is in fact killing many Indians: their bodies simply haven’t developed to cope with high-calorie foods, leaving them susceptible to obesity, diabetes and strokes. What’s more, Indians are genetically more disposed to obesity and to the diabetes that all too often accompanies it.

International football: England v Scotland ITV1, 19.30

Adrian Chiles introduces live coverage of England v Scotland from Wembley Stadium as international football’s oldest rivals meet for the first time in 14 years. Kicking off at 8pm, the friendly is the latest England match held at Wembley as part of the FA’s 150th anniversary celebrations. It also marks England’s last friendly before World Cup qualifiers resume with a game against Moldova at the stadium on September 6. Last time the teams met in November 1999, Scotland won 1-0 at Wembley with a goal from Don Hutchison, but that wasn’t enough to stop England qualifying for the Euro 2000 finals. Previous memorable encounters include a 2-0 victory for England during Euro ‘96 in which Gazza scored a famous solo goal and Scotland’s 2-1 win in 1977, after which the Wembley goalposts were torn down by fans.

The celebrity cooking competition continues as four new celebrities are introduced for the third heat. Trying to impress judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace are Boyzone star Shane Lynch, actor Brian Capron, comedian Shappi Khorsandi and TV presenter Miranda Krestovnikoff. First is the Mystery Box Test. Requiring skill and flair, the celebrities must design their own dish from a range of mystery ingredients. The second challenge is the Palate Test. John demonstrates to the viewers at home a simple tomato tart with herb salad. Without seeing the demo, the celebrities have just a few minutes to taste this dish, then write down exactly what is in it. Then they must recreate John's dish in 50 minutes without a recipe. Finally, the four hopefuls leave the MasterChef kitchen for the first time as they are thrown straight into the pressured world of mass catering. With hungry students to feed at Goldsmiths College, the celebrities have to be on top of their game if they want to succeed.

Paul O’Grady’s working Britain BBC1, 21.00 The working class worked. It’s right there on the tin. From the dark days of the industrial revolution to the hairnets and rubber gloves of the factory line, it was the workers that made Britain great. But what happened to those teeming communities of hardworking men and women, proud of who they were and what they did? Does anyone even call themselves working class anymore? Fiercely proud of his own working-class identity, Paul O’Grady is on a mission to find out what has happened to his tribe. In episode one, Paul O’Grady goes on a very personal journey through the history of the British working class. From the terraced streets of his childhood in Birkenhead all the way to the Clyde in Glasgow, he finds out about the factories and mines that were at the heart of working-class life, and what happened when they disappeared. Along the way Paul meets the people of Britain who are keeping the culture and values of the working class alive. He also tries his hand at some honest graft to find out if any of that fierce sense of community and pride has survived the huge changes the working class has faced.

Shane Lynch and Brian Capron are paired up and head to Angler, which specialises in seafood. Under the watchful eye of head chef Tony Fleming, Shane and Brian are thrown in at the deep end, as they struggle to cope with a busy service. Miranda and Shappi are sent to Criterion at Piccadilly Circus where the cracks soon begin to appear as they fight to keep on top of customer orders. Then, it is back to MasterChef headquarters as the celebrities have to work as a team to create one main course and one dessert in one hour. In a final test of culinary creativity, the contestants are asked to prepare one dish of their own design in one hour.

MUSICAL YOUTH WHAT’S NEW IT is always nice to see the youth of today performing, and the final of Saturday’s talent competition at Ye Olde Ocean, in Fañabe, showcased just how talented the young members of our community are.

The competition was given the tongue-incheek name Strictly X Idol, but the performances were a far cry from anything tonguein-cheek. The event was staged by Live Arico (PAWS) and helped raise 250 euros via the heat and the final itself. It was hosted by Gordon Slayney and judging the final were Suzi Q, Michael J Grant, one of the Island’s finest male soul singers, Shane Haigh-Souza, mastermind behind the fabulous Mister Sister Show, and Julie Miller, resident compere at Ye Olde Ocean. The talent and experience on the judging panel did not excuse the fact that they had the hardest job. It is harder than anyone thinks to judge a competition like this, especially as the majority of entrants were

youngsters, who always show bucket-loads of enthusiasm. It was youth that shone through in the end, and on Saturday night I caught up with the winner, 15-year-old Connor Graham, and runner-up, Kofi Lee Hopkins-Taylor who, despite being just 13, has a surprisingly versatile voice. They are good friends and both come from good stock, too, because their fathers are singers on the circuit here, so the boys have had good schooling when it comes to stage craft. Connor has a natural, raw talent for music in general and plays a multitude of instruments, including guitar, drums and piano/keyboard, and he is self-taught. This ability, along

with good vocal genes passed down from , secured him the win. Connor sang Green Days Time Of Your Life, Ed Sheeran’s A Team and Breakfast at Tiffany’s by Deep Blue Something. Kofi’s three songs were For The First Time by The Script, Iris by The Goo Goo Dolls and Passenger’s recent hit Let Her Go. These two young men would like to pursue careers in entertainment - and for Connor, things are already happening in the UK. His band, The Trip, have just released a promo EP and are currently working at local venues in the North East with hopes of spreading their wings in search of bigger things. Kofi, on the other hand, has expressed

an interest in musical theatre, which is not beyond the realms of possibility, especially as his vocal coach is Dominic James. lead male in The Sound Of Musicals at Showtime, With a mentor like Dominic, anything is possible. Everyone involved in the day thoroughly enjoyed themselves, none more so than these two lads, who walked away with some lovely prizes, too, including a cash prize each of 100 euros and 50 euros respectively and both received tickets to Siam Park, The Sound Of Musicals and an evening at Vivo for the Bitter & Twisted Show. There is a lot of young talent on this Island and this sort of event should happen more often.

THE entertainment circuit here is always on the move. Changes are made all the , artistes move around venues, resident comperes move to different places and cabaret artistes swap nights in order to fine-tune their diaries to maximise their earning potential. One such change has just happened, with Dion now as resident compere at The Brahms & Liszt, on Parque de la Paz. Dion has worked on the cabaret circuit for almost 20 years and has always been the most popular rock ’n’ roll singer on the scene,. But now it’s all change and he can be seen and heard five nights a week

at The Brahms & Liszt. On Tuesdays, Dion is still available for his Rock ’n’ Roll Party Show and, as a dedicated family man, his night off is Friday. But for the remaining days of the week, why not pay him a visit down on Parque de la Paz. It’s a lovely family-run bar and, with brothers Ben and Noel at the helm every night, you will receive a warm welcome. There’s a friendly atmosphere and you can enjoy a bit of banter from Dion and witness some amazing singers on their cabaret programme. Good luck Dion, enjoy your new role.

THERE has been a few changes down at Leonardo’s over the last fortnight. One of the two resident duos, ReLoaded, is being reformed because Shiel Campbell has left Leonardo’s to join The Vagabonds band at The Bulls Head. The management and all the staff would like to wish Shiel all the best for the future. This has left a position available for a singer to join the team and become part of a successful duo. It has been deemed by the powers that be that I will be singing with Scott Henderson on Sundays and Aaron Cormack will be joining him on Tuesdays. I am thrilled about it because it is something I have wanted to do for a while, so I am looking forward to working in the new line-up over the forthcoming months. Cormack & McRae are still on the bill five nights a week and are consistently producing some fabulous music to a packed terrace. This week has seen a range of people visit the bar, but a special mention has to go to four girls who are dance students from Leicester and have been dubbed “The Leonettes”. The girls were more than happy to dance to their own choreographed routines during the late session, creating lots of interest and keeping everyone entertained. The And they will be strutting their stuff again this Sunday before returning to the UK.

It’s all change! Spain’s holiday-home market is blossoming

By Sue McDonald I HOPE you are all enjoying the summer heat as much as we are!

As you probably know, we are working from home until September, and I must say it is going well. We have had quite a few calls about re-upholstery work and curtains, but and we have been able to organise our appointments around the daytime TV schedule! Actually, closing the shop for a couple of months has been a great exercise. We have sorted out cupboards, out-ofdate material samples

and old paperwork. We have also updated our phone books and our client database, and caught up with lots of admin work. It’s amazing how much rubbish you can generate with a good sort-out! As far as the shop is concerned, we don’t want to think about going back to work yet. We are actually working, but from home! But on a serious note, we are going to have a colour change in the shop from September, so we want to sell off our demo sofa bed. In the photo you can see the sofa bed, which has an excellent mechanism and a full-sprung mattress and is in a lovely purple colour. It would be a bold colour choice for someone, but to make life easier, we’d like to sell off the complete demo set, which comprises the

sofa bed, the four-piece toning picture, and the white TV unit. The normal price for the complete set would be 1,900 euros, but we are offering a 25% discount for clearance, so 1,425 euros. None of it has been used, except for Gilly taking the odd nap in the afternoon! Anyone interested in this clearance deal should give us a ring on our usual number, (0034) 922 789729. Our new colour scheme for the shop in September will be aqua, which is a greeny-blue, because we had such a fabulous result when we re-upholstered a sofa for a client in Royal Palm. And after all, it’s good to have a change! So we will carry on working hard, and hope you are also enjoying your summer!

By Richard Way SPAIN’S economy is on its knees, but the appeal of its Costas as a tourist destination and a place to own - and rent out - a holiday home appears to be as strong as ever. The number of foreign visitors to the country during May rose 7.4% compared with the same month last year, according to Spain’s Tourist Office. And from January to May, there was a 4% year-on-year hike in the number of foreigners arriving there. The UK’s love affair with Spain continues with force. No other nationality visited the country in such numbers as the British did during the first five months of the year, with the Balearic and Canary Islands favoured most. Of interest is the fact

that the overall number of package holidays to Spain dropped by 6.4% in May to represent 28.8% of the total visitor market. This could, feasibly, indicate a rise in tourists opting to rent holiday homes privately. It is an option which can be a more affordable type of holiday if lowcost flights are available and the cost of rental is split between a group of friends. One leading rentals website observed that based on inquiries in 2013, people are booking more last-minute breaks, with 87% more inquiries being made just one month prior to departure, compared with six months prior. Meanwhile, Overseas Guides Company inquiries about Spain increased by 46% year-

on-year for May, showing increasing interest in owning property there. The Overseas Guides Company, (OGC) official guides provider for Rightmove Overseas - was launched in 2005. Since then, the company has gone from strength to strength and become a foremost media portal. As well as a resource centre offering free information over the phone (0207 898 0549), OGC produces indepth, unbiased buying guides and regular newsletters for overseas property-buyers. To ensure information is current and first-hand, OGC has a growing team of expat writers, who offer first-hand information and an indepth understanding of what life is like in their country of residence.

Alice’s garden YOU can see the last in the series of Love your Garden with Alan Titchmarsh and his team as they transform a Cumbrian Garden this Tuesday at 8pm. The garden belongs to the inspirational Pyne’s family who lost their daughter, Alice, to cancer in January. Alice bravely fought Hodgkins Lymphoma for over five years. She’d become world famous due to the bucket list of things she wanted to do or achieve in her final years and, whilst the family continue her charitable causes in her memory, their garden has become neglected. After getting over the shock of finding Alan Titchmarsh on their doorstep, Vicky and

Page 38

Simon Pyne show him how the garden has suffered over the last few years, when they have had to spend so much time travelling to and from hospital visits. This awkwardly shaped plot slopes down to a stream, and has areas of very damp shade as well as bright and sunny corners. Taking his inspiration from the majestic beauty of the Lake District, Alan’s plan is to build them a garden that brings the best of the Cumbrian landscape to their back door. Alan’s main idea is to create a rock garden. Though they’ve fallen out of fashion he thinks they are ripe for revival, so tasks hard landscaping expert David Domoney with

realising his vision. Five tonnes of rock later, and its ready for Alan to plant with nearly 600 Alpines and rock plants. Elsewhere, whilst Frances Tophill plants an area with Alice’s favourite colours, Katie Rushworth is designing a space that will be a refuge for Alice’s 14 year old sister Milly, who has also faced her own health problems over the years. The unseasonably hot weather makes building the garden a struggle. The plants need constant watering and the turf has to be laid before it is too late. Will the team finish the garden on time and will it give the Pynes the dream garden they so richly deserve?

Health and Beauty

By Carl from Robot

WITH the summer season well upon us, it’s really hotting up here in Tenerife and many of us are taking a dip in swimming pools or the sea.

This is obviously fine for cooling down, but what is it doing to your hair? Chlorinated pools will wreak havoc with your locks if you’re not protecting them from the chemicals which are introduced to clean the water. Chlorine, a form of bleach, is used to sterilise the water we swim in, but it can also damage the hair - sometimes really badly. Applying a barrier of

Page 40

In the swim!

conditioner over your hair before you swim will cut down on the damage greatly. Simply apply to dry hair and you are covered - it’s as easy as that. After leaving the pool, rinse your hair well at the poolside shower, or wash it immediately at home. Never allow pool water to dry into your hair because the suns rays accelerate the power of the chlorine, “bleaching” the hair and fading the colour. This causes damage, leaving your hair porous and prone to breakage. And if you have blonde hair, it can turn a shade of khaki if you swim regularly. Wash and condition your hair after every swim because, even if it’s a quick dip, the effect is the same. And if

you’ve been swimming in the sea, then do the same with the conditioner. Once out of the water, rinse under the beach shower or take a bottle of water with you. It seems extravagant, but it is cheaper than trying to salvage the damage. Sea water is so salty that it also dries the hair and, with the mixture of the sun’s rays, it can really take it out of your hair. Make sure you keep up with your regular cuts to keep those ends tidy, and DON’T forget to apply your masques at home to replenish the lost moisture. Remember, if you take things out, you must put them back. So, one word of advice: MOISTURISE!

Fill up at breakfast … shift that weight DIETERS have long been told they should breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dine like a pauper.

Scientists have now confirmed the principle, and they have even quantified the difference it can make to your weight loss. Women were fed most of their calories either at breakfast or dinner, and the two groups were then monitored by researchers over a 12week period. The researchers, from Israel’s Tel Aviv University, also found there were other health benefits. The breakfast group saw their levels of ghrelin, an appetite hormone, decrease dramatically. And they believe it is not only the food we eat, but when we eat it, which can have a huge impact on our health. So the time of day we eat impacts the way our bodies process food, says Professor Daniela Jakubowicz, of Tel Aviv University in Israel. At the end of the study, those on the breakfast plan lost an average of 19.1lbs. But the people eating most of their calories at the end of the day lost just 7.9lbs. The body’s metabolism is governed by the circadian rhythm - the biological process followed by the body over a 24 hour cycle. The breakfast group lost an average of 3.3 inches from their waist-

lines, compared with 1.5ins for those eating a big dinner. These results, published in the journal Obesity, indicate that proper meal timing can make an important contribution towards managing obesity and promoting an overall healthy lifestyle. To find out the impact of meal timing on weight-loss and health, Prof Jakubowicz and her fellow researchers conducted a study in which 93 obese women were randomly assigned to one of two groups. Each consumed a moderate-carbohydrate, moderate-fat diet totalling 1,400 calories daily over three months. The first group consumed 700 calories at breakfast, 500 at lunch, and 200 at dinner. The second group ate a 200-calorie breakfast, 500-calorie lunch, and 700-calorie dinner. The The first group consumed 700 calories at breakfast, 500 at lunch, and 200 at dinner. The second group ate a 200 calorie breakfast, 500 calorie lunch, and 700 calorie dinner. The 700-calorie breakfast and dinner included the same foods.

By the end of the study, participants in the “big breakfast” group had each lost an average of 17.8lbs, and three inches off their waist, compared with a 7.3lbs and 1.4 inches for participants in the “big dinner” group. According to Professor Jakubowicz, those in the “big breakfast” group were found to have significantly lower levels of a hunger-regulating hormone - an indication that they were more satiated and had less desire for snacking later in the day, than their counterparts in the other group. The big breakfasters also showed a more significant decrease in insulin, glucose, and triglyceride levels than those in the rival group. More importantly, they did not experience the high spikes in blood glucose levels which, typically, occur after a meal. in blood sugar, the levels are considered even more harmful than sustained high bloodglucose levels, leading to high blood pressure and a greater strain on the heart. The findings suggest that people should adopt a well-thoughtout meal schedule, in addition to proper nutrition and exercise, to optimise weight loss and general health. Prof Jakubowicz said: “Eating the right foods at the wrong times can not only slow down weight loss but can also be harmful. “Our study found those in the big dinner group actually increased fat levels in their body, despite their weight loss.” She suggests that people could improve their health significantly by cutting out late-night snacking. “Mindless eating in front of the computer or television, especially in the late hours, is a huge contributor to the obesity epidemic,” she added. “It increases not only poundage, but the risk of cardiovascular disease - making that midnight sugar rush more costly than it appears.”

Relief from that pressure By Val Sainsbury TREATING tiny, benign tumours in the adrenal glands may prevent huge numbers of high bloodpressure cases.

A research team at the University of Cambridge and Addenbrooke’s Hospital believe that up to 10% of cases may be caused by the growths. Their study, published in Nature Genetics, said young patients could be freed from a lifetime of medication.

And their findings have received a positive reaction from the British Heart Foundation, which said it was an “exciting development”. High blood pressure can have fatal consequences because it in-

creases the risk of heart attacks and stroke. Most cases are caused by lifestyle choices, such as smoking and diet. Researchers had already found that large growths in the adrenal glands, which sit on the

kidneys and produce hormones, could raise blood pressure. Yet an operation to remove any tumours can reduce blood pressure. Now, though, the Cambridge researchers have found that much smaller growths, in a differ-

ent part of the glands, are producing the same effect. Both increase the amount of aldosterone (a steroid hormone) made in an adrenal gland. Release of this hormone regulates the kidneys to retain more salt in the body and, thus, increasing blood pressure. Around 5% of high blood-pressure cases are down to the large growths, but the researchers argue that the discovery of the small tumours means far more people have preventable blood pressure. Prof Morris Brown told the BBC: “We think it could be twice that amount. My guess is around 10%, so it could

be as many as one million people in the UK.” Living with high blood pressure for too long causes changes in the heart and arteries, which mean that operations later in life may not be able to reverse the condition. “We can’t go looking for the 50-60-year-olds because, we’ve missed the boat,” said Prof Brown. “We should go looking for the 30-year-olds.” Professor Jeremy Pearson, from the British Heart Foundation, said: “It is an exciting development, as this group of patients can be completely cured of high blood pressure once they have been identified - so the quicker they are diagnosed, the better.”

Raw garlic can combat cancer EATING raw garlic twice a week could almost halve the risk of lung cancer.

A study carried out in China found adults regularly consuming raw garlic as part of their diet were 44% less likely to suffer the disease. Even when researchers allowed for whether people smoked - the biggest single cause of lung cancer - they found garlic still seemed to reduce the dangers by around 30%. Around 40,000 people a year are diagnosed with lung cancer in England and Wales alone. Smoking is thought to cause at least 80% of cases and fewer than one in 10 sufferers is still alive five years after being diagnosed. Previous studies have suggested garlic can protect the lungs against various conditions, as well as ward off other malignancies such as bowel cancer. One study, conducted at the University of South Australia, suggested the popular herb could slash the risk of bowel tumours by nearly one-third. In the latest investigation, scientists at Jiangsu Provincial Centre for Disease Control and Prevention compared

1,424 lung cancer patients with 4,500 healthy adults. They were all quizzed on their dietary and lifestyle habits, including how often they consumed garlic and whether they smoked.

9th August - 15th August 2013

The results, published online in the journal Cancer Prevention Research, showed that those who ate raw garlic at least twice a week were significantly less likely to get lung cancer. And that conclusion came about whether or not they smoked, or were exposed to hightemperature cookingoil fumes, thought to be another trigger for the disease. It is not clear whether cooked garlic would have the same effect. But previous research suggests the key ingredient seems to be a chemical called allicin, released when the clove is crushed or chopped. It is thought to dampen down inflammation in the body and act as

an anti-oxidant, reducing damage from socalled free radicals to the body’s cells. Other studies have found it may help ward

off the common cold, hospital superbugs and even malaria. When it came to the crunch, though, the researchers didn’t seem

to be that positive bout their findings, saying only: “Garlic may potentially serve as a preventive agent for lung cancer.”

EasyJet takes the biscuit now Family run bakers ‘Shortbread House of Edinburgh’ are taking their shortbread to new heights after winning a contract to sell the traditional biscuit onboard easyJet flights.

EasyJet is now stocking Shortbread House of Edinburgh on all flights across Europe, Russia and the Middle East – offering thousands of holidaymakers a taste of traditional Scottish fare each day. Shortbread House of Edinburgh is led by husband and wife team Anthony and Fiona Laing - who still create the majority of their shortbread entirely by hand, using the traditional method used by Scottish housewives through the centuries. The bakery is currently producing 6,000 bars of shortbread every week for easyJet which are served up on flights across 34 countries. Anthony Laing, whose family have been baking biscuits for four generations, said: “This is a really exciting time for Shortbread House of Edinburgh and we’re thrilled to work with easyJet to promote traditional, handmade shortbread. “We started supplying easyJet in July and it’s been all hands on deck

Page 42

to ensure the first few weeks ran smoothly. We sold over three thousand packs in the first week and I feel very proud when I think about our shortbread flying the flag for Scotland across Europe and beyond.” Alongside easyJet, Shortbread House of Edinburgh also supply to a number of major hotels such as Gleneagles and The Dorches-

ter. They are hoping the millions of passengers who fly with easyJet each month will help attract new outlets for the bakery. Anthony added: “Working with easyJet is a fantastic way to showcase our product across the world. Exports count for around 25% of our business at present, but this introduces us to new markets and we’ve already had interest from potential new

clients who tried our shortbread onboard.” Shortbread House of Edinburgh were approached by aviation retailers Gate Solutions in February on behalf of easyJet and within five months the shortbread was available onboard. Shortbread House of Edinburgh has created special packaging for Scotland’s largest airline, featuring kilted Scotsmen tossing the Caber. Sharon Huetson, Inflight Manager for easyJet, said: “Shortbread House of Edinburgh are a welcome addition to easyJet’s inflight food offering providing customers with a tasty, quality product at a great price. As Scotland’s largest airline we were keen to showcase an iconic, local product and handmade shortbread has proved extremely popular with passengers across the network. “We are working hard to dispel the myths about inflight food by carefully selecting quality products from the markets we serve. In addition to traditional Scottish shortbread we also have Wookey Hole cheddar crackers, Bonne Maman Financiers and Russian Standard vodka.” Shortbread House of Edinburgh shortbread is available to buy now onboard easyJet flights for £1.50 via the inflight Boutique and Bistro:

The Cave, Los Abrigos

ONE of the things I love about living on this rock in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean is that for such a small place, there is an abundance of quality restaurants to suit every taste.

This week, I visited La Cueva (The Cave) in Los Abrigos. It had been described to me as one of Tenerife’s “hidden gems” and, from the small amount of information I was given, I was intrigued to find out more. Now the problem with “hidden gems” is that they are normally diffi-

9th August - 15th August 2013

cult to find but, luckily, this was not the case. If you make your way from Las Chafiras down into Los Abrigos, you take the first right and you’ll find a small gravel car park. Just around the corner is La Cueva, and this is the reason why it is deemed to be “hidden”. On the pavement there’s the menu board, below the sign outside a small doorway – an understated entrance to what lies just down the staircase! As we made our way into the restaurant, we were greeted by our waiters for the evening, and a stunning view of the Atlantic Ocean through the huge windows. We were invited to take a seat downstairs for a pre-meal drink, which is something you all must do on your visit. You are taken down the staircase in to the genuine cave, which is beautifully lit by both low-lamp and candle-light, and you can see and hear the waves of the Atlantic lapping against the rocks below. “A bit of a Shirley Valentine scene,” was how my companion described it – very stressrelieving and something unique to Tenerife. After much deliberation and having changed our minds several times, we made our selections from the menu, assisted by our waiter, who showed a great knowledge of all the dishes, with recommendations of how they should be cooked. Once our selections had been made we were shown to our table, next to the window overlooking the sea in the exquisitely-decorated restaurant. For our starters, my companion opted for Mussels marinere – steamed shoreline mussels in a white wine and garlic cream sauce, with rustic bread for dipping.

I chose the home-made soup of the day, which was carrot and coriander, a thick creamy soup which was also accompanied by rustic bread. What I found particular pleasing was that the waiting staff were very attentive without being a nuisance. And once the starters had been cleared, we were asked how soon we wanted our main courses, which is not something that happens in all restaurants. This gives you a chance to dine without feeling the pressure to hurry up – which, in turn, makes it a more relaxing, dining experience. Before the main courses arrived we chose a wine to accompany our meal. We selected from the new range the award winning Garmendia Reserva Burgos, which has intense aromas of cherry, vanilla, coconut and licorice. La Cueva boasts a range of wines which have been specifically chosen by the owners to complement the restaurant’s food. Many of the wines are internationally acclaimed and not available in local supermarkets, yet are priced very reasonably. They also have an organic wine, Finca Las Caraballas, which is made with organic grapes; it won no less than six awarads last year. For the main course my companion chose seared duck breast, pan-seared Barbary duck, accompanied by a Scotch whisky-andblackcurrant juice, served pink (as recommended). I went for the lamb cutlets, which were served encased in a mixed herb crust with biritz potato and bordelaise sauce – and all meals are served with a selection of fresh vegetables. Both meals were well received and the gener-

ous portions left us both feeling happily stuffed! During the evening, we got talking to two couples on the next table, who live on Golf del Sur and regularly take the short walk down the coastal path to the restaurant. It is one of their favourites and they were taking advantage of the new table d'hote, which they thought was excellent value. Before the end of our evening, we managed to spend some time with Rossa, one of the owners and also the chef. He told us that, along with his business partner Martin and his “better half” Anna, they had taken the restaurant on over two years ago with the intention of providing a variety of highquality dishes and putting their own personal stamp on them. A huge amount of time had been spent testing and researching local suppliers to ensure that all ingredients were of the highest quality. A specific aim was to provide vegetarians with a selection of dishes different from the norm. One of my personal gripes is frozen vegetables, and it is refreshing to see a restaurant which deals with fresh ingredients only. Rossa’s enthusiasm and passion for what he does, accompanied by waiting staff with an impressive knowledge of the dishes and wines available – all housed in a beautiful restaurant – makes La Cueva in Los Abrigos a must for lovers of fine dining. La Cueva are introducing a new summer timetable opening at 6pm but for group earlier bookings can be accommodated, just call. In addition there are special menus if you have a celebration or you are a large party. For reservations, call 922 170 039 or 661 178 043.

Simply breath-taking! By Jav BLINK and you’ll miss it! There aren’t too many sports cars for which this phrase applies.

But it’s certainly true of the new Audi RS7 Sportback which, unbelievably, can keep pace with a Ferrari F40 from 0-62mph, and it can also give the Audi R8 V10 a good run for its money. As for the Mercedes SLS AMG, forget it because, honestly, it stands no chance against this magnificent beast. Top speed for the RS7 is a tasty 155mph, but choose the spec - at a price - and the RS7 will peak at an astonishing 189mph.

Under the bonnet is that same mouth-watering 4.0-litre twinturboV8 engine found in the RS6. That means a sub-

stantial 560bhp going though an eight-speed automatic gearbox (with gear change paddles behind the steering wheel).

It’s enough to get the RS7 from 0-60 in just 3.9 seconds and on to 155mph. Emissions are 229g/km, while average fuel economy is 28.8mpg. That’s helped by the RS7’s cylinder-on-demand technology, which shuts down four of the eight pots when not under load. Dig deeper into your pocket for a Dynamic Plus pack and you get a host of performance add-ons, including carbon ceramic brakes and access to that 189mph limit, and all for just an extra £10,725! Comfort has never been the focal point of the RS range, but this model is better than past models, and there’s still room for improvement. Unsurprisingly as you’d expect of a car

this fast, the sheer pace takes some getting used to. However, what really takes your breath away isn’t the acceleration from a standing start. It’s the RS7’s mid-range performance when overtaking, or building up speed to join a motorway. It never seemingly runs out of breath. Just one flick of your foot is enough to have it hitting a rate that would shame most supercars. In addition, the RS7’s level of “grunt”, even at low revs, underlines a flexibility of which those same supercars could only dream. A large part of that flexibility is down to the superb, eight-speed automatic gearbox that’s well matched to the V8 engine’s plentiful power. It reacts fast enough to gear changes through

the steering wheel paddles to ensure you are not hungering for a fashionable twin-clutch semi-automatic. And it’s a lot more refined. Better still, press on a little harder and, allied to phenomenal grip, the RS7 encourages you to use every ounce of its performance. Overall, the RS7 is an extremely desirable car, and it’s hard to describe how its incredible speed actually affects your senses. With a starting price of £84,000, it is £15,000 cheaper than the BMW M6 Grand Coupe, and £25,000 cheaper than the Porsche Panamera. It should be in the showrooms by the end of the year and, if you really want to see it going through its paces, take my advice: don’t blink!

Luxury buggy for our luxurious golf courses? WOW, what a machine! But you can’t actually envisage this eyecatching car purring around our green and pleasant golf courses, can you? In fact, it’s a Vision Golf Car concept, constructed by car-makers Mercedes, who maintain it’s the ultimate golf buggy. They displayed it recently at The Open in Muirfield, East Lothian, to admiring glances. And no wonder! It has an electric motor running off lithium-

ion batteries which can be charged either by solar panels on the roof or from a wall socket. There’s also storage room for two sets of golf clubs and, because the Vision Golf Car uses a centre console-mounted joystick rather than a steering wheel, either occupant can take control. Drivers can connect their iPods using a docking station, although a USB socket and Bluetooth are also included. Luxuries include a

head-up display and air-con, along with a system to communicate with other golf buggies on the course - and with the clubhouse. Drivers can also access a map of the course, view an up-to-date weather report or check their scorecard.” There’s even a “fore’ button, which enables the occupants to warn other drivers if they hit a slightly wayward drive. Fabulous looker, but I’m not so sure it will catch on, though.

Hourglass puzzle solution Put the eggs on to boil and start both hourglasses running. When the 4-min one runs out, turn it over so it starts counting 4-min again. When the 7-min one runs out, turn it over so it starts counting again. When the 4-min one runs out for the 2nd time, turn the 7-min hourglass over - it will have only been running exactly 1-min, making 9-mins.

Adeje soccer show is tops ADEJE’S longrunning Soccer Tournament, takes place next weekend (17-18th August) at the Municipal Football Field in El Galeon.

The mayor of Adeje, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga and the Councillor for Sports, Adolfo Alonso Ferrera, announced that the 20th edition of the Soccer Tournament Villa de Adeje, will bring together six groups in the youth category. The front runners are CD Tenerife and Las Palmas. The mayor stressed: “It’s a tournament that we did not want to give up despite economic difficulties, therefore, we have redirected this sporting event to a more austere and sober venue but which continues to promote the grassroots sport.” He continued “Keeping alive this tournament is possible through the ef-

forts of the Department of Sports”. The first group is made up of UD Las Palmas, Puerto Cruz CD and CD Ofra. The second group consists of the UD Tenerife, Tenerife Selection and CD Sobadillo. Finally, the mayor of Adeje, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga stated:

“The most important thing is that the commitment of Adeje with sport is undeniable, it is not a luxury, sport is a social contribution to coexistence and improving the quality of life of citizens and we must continue to incorporate the values of sport in everyday life.”

Cast-iron Bolt to show his mettle! Back in the old routine

ENGLAND and Scotland resume hostilities at Wembley on Wednesday after a gap of 14 years. The friendly international, which kicks off at 8pm, is the latest England warm-up before their World Cup qualifier, against Moldova on 6th September. Scotland, who entertain Belgium in their own World Cup qualifier the same evening, won

Page 52

1-0 when they last met - in a 2000 European Championship qualifier, It will be England’s first match since their impressive 2-2 draw against Brazil in Rio de Janeiro in June. Scotland manager Gordon Strachan wants regular fixtures against England to return, and cash raised going to grass-roots football on both sides of the border..

As he announced his squad, the influential Scot said: “Players would love it. I think fans would like it - and grass-roots football would benefit from it.” Asked if the respective football associations could agree to a more regular meeting, the former Leeds midfield maestro added: “A lot of people would like it to be more regular, that’s for sure.”

IT doesn’t say much for the athletics scene right now when the World Championships begin tomorrow (Saturday) in Moscow. That’s because the Russians have no fewer than 44 athletes under suspension for doping. And with two of the greatest sprinters ever, Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell, testing positive recently, the sport really does need to put its house in order. Fortunately, Usain Bolt, the fastest man ever, and the biggest star the sport has ever known, will be flying the flag high and proudly.

It seems that he alone, with his wondrous feats over 100m and 200m, can restore some respectability to the sport. Actually, it’s not just up to him because Britain’s Mo Farah, himself an international hero, will be vying to rival his double Olympic gold medals in the 5,000m and 10,000m. He is the defending 5,000m champion, missing out on gold in the longer event last time and having to settle for silver. But Mo has reinvented himself in the last two years, adding a

devastating finishing burst to his repertoire which should be good enough to see him home again. But the onus is undoubtedly on Bolt. With five of his fellowJamaicans suspended for drug-taking, the tall, striking sprinter stressed last month: “I know I’m clean.” He added this week: “I spoke up because I’ve been doing this since I was 15. I’ve broken every record in every one of my events for over 10 years. “All I can do is keep working hard and running fast to help the sport.”

An even-stevens evening! IT has been said before in this column, and I have to say it again: the 2013/14 Oasis Fm Darts League is turning in to the most competitive campaign to date. Of the 18 matches played last Friday, no fewer than eight finished with a 4-4 scoreline. Star player of the even-stevens evening was Target Army’s Steven (that’s spooky), who hit two more maximums during (guess what?), a draw with Ourplace Naturals. Also on the 180 trail was The Pub’s Sam,

with his first of the season in a 6-2 defeat of Gaffers A. Match of the day in this section had to be at the Phoenix bar as they welcomed league leaders Palms Sports Bar to Los Abrigos. Palms came out of the blocks quickly and went into a 3-0 lead. Then, rather like Phoenix’s great escape last week, the match turned on its head and the hosts took a 4-3 lead! A close trebles leg saw Mitch miss three darts at double 16, and Graham hit double 10 to square the match. Great stuff!

That gave Bar 180 A the chance to narrow the gap at the top a little. They gleefully accepted the challenge and bashed Target Titans 7-1. Hat’s off to Justyn, who hit the highest checkout for the year with a stunning 158. The Pirates came through with a 5-3 win at Scruffy Macs, while the Playboys shared the spoils with the Vikings. Rood still lead the way at the top of a very tight Division 1. They cruised to victory over Amistad 1, although Trap Door narrowed

the gap a little as they thumped Marilyns 7-1. Beck and Cloughie were in top form for Bar 180 B, and they needed to be! Their trebles leg win just saved them from defeat at the hands of Gaffers B. Bar 180 C also took the last rubber to square the local derby match with Emerald Lounge. Naughty Nautas took three singles legs from Barracuda Bytes. Sadly, the proverbial wheels then fell off as they crashed 5-3, while Chipeque remain in the hunt after a useful 6-2 win at Summerlands.

The reverse local derby in Division 2 saw Bar 180 D make it three draws out of four matches for the San Blas venue. At 4-2 down it looked unlikely. But they dug deep and squeaked a last-gasp leg at Emerald Shamrocks to avoid any bragging rights for the TopSquare outfit. More local derby drama came at la Caña as visiting Pas O Nadas lost the trebles and joined the even-stevens party night! Still one more draw to mention and that came at Barracuda Hunters

as Paul (pod) Mason won all three of his games to help Phoenix Flights to a handy fourpoint haul. Title favourites Tenerife Sun took their eighth win in 10 matches, at home to Picassos, while Amistad 2 made light work of Ourplace Playgirls. In a break from league action, tonight’s main event is the trebles knockout competition. Some 87 players, across the four sections, will battle it out for a place on stage in September’s Finals Night. Good luck to all.

Sport In Brief Wigan up for Wembley again

WIGAN striker Grant Holt maintains his team will not take Sunday’s Community Shield appearance against Manchester United lightly. The Latics will feature in the season’s traditional curtain-raiser for the first time, courtesy of their shock FA Cup Final win against Manchester City. “We’ve got Europe, the League Cup and the FA Cup, and every game we’re in, we’ll try to win,” said the former Norwich captain. Ben Watson scored the only goal as Wigan defeated Manchester City to win the FA Cup for the first time in the club’s history in May, only to suffer relegation a few days later.

Aussies on the rampage

SKIPPER Michael Clarke, batting hero of the last Ashes Test, believes Australia can redeem themselves by drawing the series after failing to regain the Ashes. Lucky England, outplayed for the most part, drew a rain-affected third Test at Old Trafford to take an unassailable 2-0 lead and retain the urn. Buoyant Clarke, who scored 187 runs in the first innings to set England a huge task, is certain his team can continue where they left off when the fourth Test gets underway at Durham today, (Friday). Australia must win, and take the final Test at The Oval on 21st August to draw the series. “If we can level the series, we will take a lot of confidence back to Australia,” said Clarke.

Tweddle’s final twiddle

BETH TWEDDLE, Britain’s most decorated gymnast, has retired following her bronzemedal success a year ago at London 2012. The 28-year-old has not competed since claiming her first Olympic podium finish last summer. Her display on the uneven bars was the highlight of a career in which she won three world titles and six European golds. “It’s been a hard decision,” said Beth. “Gymnastics has been, and always will be, a massive part of my life.” Despite continuing to train, she took a break from competitive gymnastics after the London Games, subsequently missing events such as April’s European Artistic Gymnastics Championships. “ I’ve had a lot of projects on and, recently, I’ve had a bit more time to get back into the gym and decide whether I could put 100% into it,” she said. “I know now, deep down, that I can’t commit to the hours and training to remain at the very top. “I don’t think my achievements will ever really sink in but, when I do look back, I can be very proud of what I’ve done and how I’ve done it.” She then revealed that a Beth Tweddle Academy will be opened in a school on the London Olympic site, which will provide gymnastics training for children aged 2-14.

Adeje to host the fourth Bodyboard Canarian Circuit

The mayor of Adeje, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, the Councillor for Sports, Adolfo Alonso Ferrera and the President of the Canarian Surf Federation, Angel Lobo, announced that the Fourth Canarian Bodyboard Circuit, will be held in La Caleta this month. The mayor stressed that “The sea is witnessing many sporting, social and cultural events, the sports council are supporting a number of initiatives in emerging sports in our town.” Angel Lobo stated that “the wave of the cove is a mecca for all, it’s created in Argentina and

South Africa and is travelling back to break in Adeje, therefore the level of the wave has itself is one of the best in Europe “. Throughout the competition, which will bring together 120 partici-

pants from the Canary Islands and the rest of Spain, it’s expected to conduct a local championship where beginners will also have a chance the amount of prizes amounting to 3,000 euros. The sports coun-

cilor added, “Today is an important day because we are witnessing the continuation of a project that is organised jointly by Sports and Youth and shows teamwork and synergy, key elements within this council.”

Knights big hold on Hammers continues THE new pool season started the same way the last campaign ended, with Phoenix Knights beating Tenerife Hammers A. While the curtainraising Charity Shield doesn’t have the same prestige as winning the league, it did lay down another marker ahead of the new Direct Telecom Pool League season. Cup-winners Knights were never behind on Tuesday, and Hammers A didn’t ever seem likely to turn the match around. They were hamstrung by an off-form Jambo losing all three matches, while all the Knights lads chipped in with wins. Wez completed his hat-trick in frame nine to give Hammers hope

at 5-4, only for Harry to beat Fritzel. Penguin then accounted for Knights’ new-boy Les to take it to the final frame. Normally, Jambo would be a strong favourite to take the spoils, but he was never comfortable against Knights captain Bubbles, who held his nerve to sink the winning black in fine style. The 7-5 scoreline was fair, and the Phoenix mob will take some stopping this season. The fixtures are out for the new season and, amazingly, the campaign gets underway on Tuesday with Knights and Hammers A squaring up in an immediate rematch! Will it be repeat or revenge?

Last season’s runnersup, Gaffers A, start at home to Peacocks, who look stronger this year, while Phoenix Potters travel to Dreamers A. Plate-winners Palms A unleash some new signings as they host Bar La Cana A. Newlook Toscales A will be confident of starting with a win at Tenerife Hammers C, and there looks little to choose between Inn The Pink A and Terrace A. The top-flight’s new boys cross swords in Silencio as Exiles A look make an early statement at home to Treehouse A. There are 22 teams in Division Two this season and plenty of guesswork as to who will be the early pacesetters. Inn The Pink B finished well last season and they start at Tenerife Pool Tables, who are based at the Queen Vic. Terrace B are back in the second tier and they will hope to prove a point at home to Picasso’s B, while Exiles

B should go well at Bar La Cana B. This year we welcome a raft of new sides - and our first allgirls team! The ladies from Cosy Corner B start on Monday night at Gaffers B!
