The Premier League By Adi Benson THERE is never any respite in the Barclays Premier League and, after a busy festive programme and FA Cup upsets, the teams are ready to roll again! Hull v Chelsea (Saturday, 12.45pm) Hull fans will be more than happy to have started the New Year in 10th place and six points off the relegation battle. The question is, though, has Tom Huddlestone done a Samson and lost his effectiveness by getting his hair cut? Chelsea have been grinding out results and they are not the prettiest to watch at the moment - more lisa Riley than Rachel Riley. but third place in the league does not lie, and they have stopped conceding goals. Mourinho was at his prickly best over the festive period and this is helping his team grab points. Prediction: away win Spurs v Crystal Palace (Saturday, 3pm) Tim Sherwood is now the official Head Coach at Spurs, and they have been very entertaining so far. I get the impression that he picks his team by closing his eyes and sticking in a pin in the team sheet. They will be confident after beating Man utd last time out, and they sit in sixth position, just two points off the top four. Crystal Palace, who have picked up a few points recently and are just three points from 15th, will believe they can get something from this. Prediction: draw Southampton v West Brom (Saturday, 3pm) Saints have got their season back on track. They start 2014 in the top half of the table and, more importantly, with Jay Rodriguez scoring goals for fun. They will now look to
push on and will fancy their chances against West brom. The baggies are still without a manager, but it looks as though they are about to name Thomas Schaaf as Steve Clarke’s successor. This could be a gamble because Schaaf has never coached outside bremen. but can the prospect of a new manager inspire? Prediction: home win Fulham v Sunderland (Saturday, 3pm) This game could go either way; it could be the most exciting game of the afternoon, or the most boring! There is so much at stake for these teams and fulham can put some distance between themselves and the teams behind them.
Prediction: home win Everton v Norwich (Saturday, 3pm) This is a game of contrasts because when you look at both teams, they are similar in squad size and quality. but everton are a point off fourth place, while Norwich are just three points off the relegation zone. I believe this comes down to Premier league experience. everton are old hands and know what it takes to get results, plus new manager Roberto Martinez added players with knowledge of this
league. Norwich have not really put together any sort of a run yet in the league, yet are capable of beating most teams on their day. but I’m not sure Saturdays are their days! Prediction: home win Cardiff v West Ham (Saturday, 3pm) There are so many Cardiff jokes around at the minute, thanks to their unpredictable owner, Vincent Tan. but they are fortunate to be playing West Ham, who are one big joke. They have conceded 11 goals since Sunday and, should they lose this one, will be well and truly adrift in the relegation zone. Cardiff have newmanager syndrome, with ole Gunnar Solskjær coming in
and already signing new players, whereas West Ham have big Sam bemoaning his lot. Realistically, regardless of what the board say, surely it is the end of big Sam if they lose this one. Prediction: home win Man utd v Swansea (Saturday, 5.30pm) Sometimes, cup competitions throw up fixtures like this, Swansea last weekend knocked Man utd out of the fA Cup, and now face them in the league. Cup games are different from league games, and you can bet David Moyes will be looking for a reaction from his players, especially after yet another defeat in midweek. Swansea are a decent team and made life difficult for united last time out. They will go with a similar gameplan and hope it works twice in a week! Prediction: draw Newcastle v Man City (Sunday, 2.05pm) So you are a Newcastle defender looking at this fixture - could be time for a tweak of the hamstring! I certainly wouldn’t fancy facing Man City in the attacking form they’re in. That said, Newcastle have been one of the in-form teams recently and could take a little comfort from City not
always travelling well. but they will have to be at their very best because Manuel Pellegrini must sit and rub his hands when it comes to picking a City team. Prediction: away win Stoke v Liverpool (Sunday, 4.10pm) Stoke, who haven’t been playing well, still find themselves in 12th place, and they will be relishing the arrival of liverpool to the brittania Stadium. liverpool have maybe been a little too reliant on luis Suarez to score their goals, and he hasn’t been at his best, highlighted in the recent games against Man City and Chelsea. Stoke are difficult to break down and liverpool will have
to work hard to get a result. Prediction: away win Aston villa v Arsenal (Monday, 8pm) Villa have had an upand-down first half of the season, but they are six points clear of the relegation zone, which is better than last year. Arsenal still lead the league, but by a point only, and will want to keep their noses in front. I suspect that by the time they kick off, Man City and Chelsea will be above them. The problem they face is goals. Giroud is a doubt, bendtner and Walcott are both out injured and Podolski is just coming back from injury. but they will still win. Prediction: away win

Magical win over Murcia
By Roscoe
Real Murcia 1 Cd Tenerife 2
THIS weekend marks the halfway point of the season - and there is one word which sums up the Spanish Second division: Ridiculous!
I’ve never seen a campaign like it. Just 15 points separates top from bottom. Girona who are second-bottom, have scored more goals than leaders Deportivo la Coruña. fourth-bottom Mirandes have conceded fewer than second place Sporting Gijon. Tenerife have hosted three of the top five. Deportivo, eibar and las Palmas. They won the lot without conceding a goal and notching seven. but bottom half Sabadell and fourthbottom Mirandes gave the lads a spanking. What was it Jimmy Greaves said? And the madness con-
tinued last Saturday when Tenerife returned with just their second away win of the season. The local media in Murcia called it a robbery. I prefer smashand-grab. Yes, Tenerife were under the cosh for most of the match, but they battled hard and Roberto didn’t have a huge number of saves to

make. The festive break seems to have freshened up Chechu and luismi, who both enjoyed rare starts. The defence was magnificent, and best summed-up by leftback Raul Camara. He literally ran through a brick wall and was battered, bruised and exhausted when he finally

trudged off, 12 minutes from the end. Time and again he had tracked back, thrown himself in the way of the ball and once, he even whacked his head against an opponent’s fist. Well, that’s what the ref said as he refused to give a foul or a red card. Tenerife were ahead early. A lovely Ayoze turn in the box caught two defenders ballwatching. He squared the ball to Aridane on the penalty spot, and he coolly slid the ball past Casto. It was hard for Murcia to take after their bright start. Not that Tenerife cared - and credit to the hosts, who didn’t let their heads drop. They plugged away and it was no surprise when they equalised 20 minutes later. Murcia stalwart kike Garcia was a second ahead of the defence as he pounced on a loose ball to poke in his 11th of the season. both sides kept up a frantic pace and just before the break, Tenerife were given a stonewall penalty when Mauro Dos Santos had a moment of madness. His clumsy challenge
on Ayoze gave the ref no option but to point to the spot. And luismi loro doesn’t miss from 12 yards! The half-time break gave the coaches a chance to tweak the formations and, normally, the teams tighten up. This didn’t happen. Murcia plugged away and Tenerife looked for the counter. It was nervy and, at times, desperate, but Tenerife saw it through to the end. Murcia looked crestfallen and, with this league so tight, these dropped points may hurt them in June. It’s not the first time I have seen them this year and they will be fine. It’s funny how some teams who have looked average against Tenerife have resembled world-beaters on other days. leaders Deportivo were made to look ordinary when in Santa Cruz, and yet they are looking down on everyone despite winning just one out of their last five. A few weeks ago I said “watch Mallorca” and they are set to fly. They rode their luck in las Palmas last week, but
it was still a decent 2-2 draw, with former Tenerife fave Alfaro starting to find his feet. He notched for the second straight week, and the Islanders have a good run of matches coming up. As do Tenerife, well after this Sunday’s home match with Sporting Gijon. The visitors are second and have been quietly going about their business. They are one of the league’s big fish and are desperate to get back into la liga. Sunday’s defeat by Real Zaragoza was their first since Halloween and their success is built on their strong attack. only Numancia have kept them out, and Tenerife will have to keep a close eye on Stefan Scepovic. The well-travelled Serbian has had a brilliant few months, helping himself to 15 goals already. He is partnered in more ways than one by countryman Dejan lekic. The former osasuna striker is the creator in the large and large partnership. They have been dynamite for Sporting, and their east european scout is on course for a superb bonus. but Sporting are far from a one-man team and a lot of top-flight sides are looking at Alex barrera. He has added some goals to his guile and, once he gets his fitness levels up, he will be a real player. Tenerife have a clean bill of health, and one player hoping to start is former Sporting midfielder Ricardo. He joined them in la liga days after Tenerife’s top-flight relegation, but had a forgettable two seasons. “It was tough for me.” he said. “I was never really fully fit and couldn’t get a proper run in the team. “The relegation year was tough, but it will be nice to see a few of the faces again.” The match kicks off at 5pm.

CAROL’S GREAT dRIvE FOR CANCER vICTIMS
WHEN Carol S a l i s b u r y Chappell heard testimonies from three men and a woman that they had considered killing themselves, her blood ran cold.
It happened at a meeting she called last october for cancer sufferers, their families, friends and anyone else concerned at los Cristianos Cultural Centre. The Cabildo had withdrawn funding to transport cancer patients to and from Candelaria Hospital, and the four people were forced to drive themselves up North, then drive back home after treatment. Carol, who held the meeting on behalf of the european Citizens Group, for whom she will be elected President at the end of the month, was stunned. “I had been asked by a friend and her daughter, who both have cancer, if I could drive them to the hospital,” she said. “It was no problem - even though their appointments were on different days - and eventually I contacted sev-
eral friends for help and we devised a transport rota for the two women. “but the more I heard about sufferers having to make their own way to the hospital, the more heartbreaking it was, so I called the meeting to highlight their problems.” A story in Canarian Weekly promoted the event, which attracted no fewer than 90 people. “When one man stood up and said that he felt so sick while driving home that he just wanted to end it all by crashing the car, I was horrified,” said Carol. Then, three others stood up individually and said they all felt the same way. fortunately, they agreed that they couldn’t do it because it would have endangered the lives of other drivers. “but to hear them get so close to even consider it made me determined to do something to ease their plight - and the plights of many others here in the South.” When she began spreading the word, with support from the Cancer Association of Spain (AeCC), she discovered plenty of sympathisers and formed the kM Solidario group, which is allied to AeCC.
Now, Archiauto, at las Chafiras, has loaned her a nine-seater mini-bus for six months,. “The bus began taking people to Candelaria Hospital this week, and I am so grateful to the company,” she said. “but even before then, I was fund-raising to get our own 24-seater bus, and I intend to open the first cancer charity shop in Tenerife. “I have already found an empty shop, which needs refurbishing, and I just need to get funding for the rent and overheads, and then I’ll put a plea out for good second-hand items to fill it. And we’ll also need volunteers to run the place.” She added: “The reaction from some people has been amazing, and I’ve already had donations from everywhere. one chap in a bar promised me 500 euros – and the next night he was back with the money. “The Paloma beach golf society in los Cristianos raised a fantastic 2,000 euros for us, and I have had other donations from caring people. “one lady I met told me she owned the luxurious Hotel Spa Villalba in Vilafor and said I was
welcome to use it for functions. “We held a cocktail benefit night in November, and attracted 60 people, which was fantastic. Hopefully, we will be able to hold more fund-raisers there in the near future.” Carol, a former business studies lecturer in the south of england, came to Tenerife 16 years ago and lives in Adeje.
“What I find so upsetting is that the Cabildo would drop the free transport for these poor people,” she said. “It’s not as though we’re a Third World country. “but I am receiving so much support – and I’ll need it because I have to collect 34,000 euros to purchase the bus, and then the running costs on top. “We all have the greatest respect for Cande-
laria Hospital and its staff and I’m hoping to contact Cabildo President Carlos Alonso to see if I can persuade him to consider reinstating the free transport scheme.” If you want to make a donation, or feel you can help Carol in any way, please contact her on 922 781 783 or 639 069 862, or email her at carolhospital transport@ yahoo.co.uk
HoTelS’ CHIef bACkS THe All-INCluSIVeS! J O R G E MARICHAL, President of the Hotel Association of Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro (Ashotel), is delighted with the winter figures.
So much so that he has pledged his support for the All-Inclusive sector. Hotel occupancy in South Tenerife for 2013 was similar to previous years, with like-for-like figures higher in recent
months compared with 2012 and 2011. Virtually all hotels have been filled in Santiago del Teide, Granadilla, Adeje and Arona, while Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz saw marked increases. Marichal said: “The mode of an All-Inclusive hotel represents 16% of the reserves in the local three and four-star market. “This has been beneficial, and a complementary offering in the sector. What we did not see in 2013 year were complaints that the all-in-
clusive hurts restoration and the market. What you need to do is provide a good product.” The Ashotel President also expects the number of visitors from the mainland - which has been falling steadily since 2009 - to improve this year. Ashotel expects the summer to be similar to 2013, and Marichal feels it is important to maintain hotel standards. “What we have to do is keep our prices competitive and improve quality,” he said. “And from my point of view, that is being done.”

Worlds Weird Weather! THE whacky and worrying worldwide weather has even affected Tenerife.
As Hell froze over (a town in Michigan) and Niagara falls became a solid lump of ice, we were treated to bucketloads of huge hailstones the size of marbles at around 4am yesterday (Thursday). They fell all the way down to coastal areas during a blast of thunder and lightning, turning some areas whiter than white. Predictably, snow fell heavily on Teide overnight, but sightseers were unable to see the magnificent views because the ice-bound access roads were closed for safety reasons. And while britain was being battered by high winds and floods, more than half the uS population was under a “wind chill” warning. A blast of freezing Arctic air has swept south and east across the country, bringing the coldest temperatures for decades. The whirlpool of dense air known as the “polar vortex” has caused a number of deaths, closed schools and businesses, cancelled thousands of flights and left denselypopulated cities facing colder temperatures than Siberia. Around 187 million people could eventually feel the effects of the freezing temperatures, and Americans have been warned that their skin could freeze within minutes if they go outside. but the record-breaking temperature didn’t deter visitors from somehow getting to Niagara falls to take pictures of the spectacular scene overlook-
dorset Shoreline
ing the falls in ontario. The “unprecedented” amounts of ice in the upper Niagara River, caused by the freezing conditions, led to a so-called ice jam and, in turn, flooding on Grand Island and Cayuga Island in Niagara falls. According to records, only once previously, in 1848, has freezing weather caused the
thousands of cubic feet of water per second flowing over the Niagara falls to run dry, and that was also caused by ice jamming and damming upriver. Areas as far south as brownsville, Texas and central florida were facing record low temperatures as the barometer fell by as much as 22C below the average.
It was even colder in some areas than Siberia, which was -33C. Indianapolis Mayor Greg ballard said: “The cold is the real killer here,” and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has declared a state of emergency. The weather has caused chaos for uS business and industry, threatening to disrupt oil drilling and frack-
ing. It has even hit livestock and grain shipments across the farm belt, even in the Deep South. More than 4,000 flights were cancelled and almost as many again delayed earlier in the week. And several airlines could not allow their ground crews to remain outdoors for more than 15 minutes at a time.
There were also hundreds of flight cancellations by airlines across the mid-west and north-east as supplies of fuel and de-icer froze. The weather has been blamed for a number of deaths across Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and ohio. Meanwhile, british Prime Minister David Cameron suspects the devastating flooding across the country is the result of climate change. He was asked on Wednesday about the extreme weather over the New Year, which saw 60mph winds, torrential rain and tidal waves that left eight people dead and hundreds of homes under water. but his comments at Prime Minister’s Questions will have infuriated some Tory backbenchers, who do not accept global warming is affecting britain’s weather. on top of that, Government budget cuts - including axing 1,500 environment Agency jobs - may affect its ability to deal with emergencies such as the flooding misery. Concerns came as britain was battered by another storm this week, leading to further flooding in towns and villages in southwest england. The environment Agency has 110 flood warnings in place across the country, including in Dorset, oxfordshire, south Wiltshire, Hampshire and along the River Thames, from Hampton Court upwards, and 195 flood alerts. The Scottish environment Protection Agency (SePA) has 14 flood warnings and six flood alerts in place.

fANTASY fooTbAll leAGue WELL that was some festive period of football. Games came quick and fast, and we have even got the FA Cup 3rd round out of the way.
but what of the oasis fm fantasy league? There was a lot of chopping and changing in the table but at the top, three or four teams are keeping themselves out front. I suspect teams dropped points with their managers not paying much attention, what with all the social-
ising to be done at this time of the year. So still out in front we have Steve Schofield and his Tenerife Hotspurs. However, Steve takes this very seriously and
he will have been checking in on his team daily, swopping injured players around and using transfers. He is a handy 87 points clear and may take some beating, but
we can all take heart from the fact that he is a Man utd fan! The interesting one is the team of the week award, which goes to laura Mann and her
blacktower finance team scoring 81 points, with Theo Walcott providing 22 of those points before his injury. The thing is, laura is Steve Schofield’s partner, so is there a little bit of assistance being provided here?
Anyway we are back to Premier league action this weekend, so I need to tinker with my team and work out whom to pick when all my players appear to be injured, or I could just reach for the big Sam book of excuses.

Relations between The Rock and Madrid reached their lowest ebb since General franco’s rule, from 1939 until his death in 1975. Vessels flying the Spanish flag intruded into Gibraltar’s sea limit 446 times last year - almost double the previous year’s tally. Yet all the aggravation could probably have been avoided had the king of Spain’s wishes been granted in the eighties. back then, in July 1983, king Juan Carlos reportedly told britain that Spain “did not really want” Gibraltar back as it would lead to claims from Morocco for Spanish territories in North Africa. Details of the meeting, held in Madrid, were released last week by the National Archives in kew as part of a parcel of secret uk Government papers, declassified under the 30-year rule. And they are likely to cause some discomfort after a year that saw the Spanish Government reiterate calls for talks over sovereignty. back then, king Juan Carlos urged “confidential talks” over Gibraltar be conducted between Spanish and british ministries to ensure Spain’s path into what was then the european economic Community was not impeded over the issue. The king, who celebrated his 76th birthday on Sunday, was said to have admitted privately in a meeting with Sir Richard Parsons, the then british ambassador to Madrid, that it was “not in Spain’s interest to recover Gibraltar in the near future”. If it did so, he added: “king Hassan would immediately reactivate the Moroccan claim to Ceuta and Melilla.” It’s not surprising that king Juan Carlos was ea-
ger to avoid the SpanishMorocco subject. even today Spain’s stance on Gibraltar is seen as hypocritical, when you consider the similarity to their claims of land in Africa. Details of the meeting were released last week by the National Archives in kew as part of the secret government papers declassified under the 30-year rule. And they are likely to cause some discomfort after a year in which Spain’s Government reiterated calls for talks over sovereignty. The recent incursions by Spain have aggravated an already-fraught relationship, and the seemingly maritime game of cat-and-mouse has heightened fears of a serious accident. Some Gibraltar officials have called for the Royal Navy to increase its armed patrols, while others have labelled the Spaniards “trigger happy”. “Such incursions are a misguided attempt to maintain and assert Spanish claims that the waters are Spanish,” said a spokesman from the foreign and Commonwealth office (fCo). “However, we have always been confident of uk sovereignty over british Gibraltarian Territorial Waters. “Although unlawful Spanish incursions are a violation of sovereignty, they are not an armed attack and are not a threat to uk sovereignty.
“They do not weaken or undermine the legal basis for british sovereignty, and nor do they change the fact of uk and Gibraltar jurisdiction.” In November, one of the worst months for incursions, with 54 incidents, the Spanish Ambassador to london, federico Trillo, was summoned to the foreign office and warned “in no uncertain terms that the british Government would not stand for such “unlawful incursions”. It was the third time since Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy took power, in December 2012, that the ambassador had been summoned. under the previous administration of Socialist Prime Minister Jose luis Zapatero, there were 23 incursions in 2011 and 67 the previous year. earlier last year, foreign Secretary William Hague said: “These actions and threats are wholly unacceptable.” He added that Spain’s incursions were stepped up in response to Gibraltar’s creation of an artificial reef, which, it maintains, is necessary to encourage fish stocks. but Spanish officials maintain it impinges on their fishing rights. David lidington, Minister for europe, has told british ministers that the uk has made repeated diplomatic protests over incursions in recent months. Mr lidington said
Spain had increased unlawful incursions by its state vessels into uk territorial waters from about five per month to about 40 per month. He added: “We stand ready to do whatever is required to protect Gibraltar’s sovereignty, economy and security.
“We believe that it is in the interests of Spain, Gibraltar and britain to avoid incidents such as this, which damage the prospects for establishing dialogue and co-operation.” The worst month for incursions was August, when Spanish ships illegally entered Gibraltar’s waters 68 times. The incursions coincided with a period of severe delays at the Spanish-Gibraltar border which, london and Gibraltar said, was orchestrated by Spain, to
punish The Rock for the artificial reef “Not a single incursion into Gibraltar’s territorial waters goes unchallenged,” said a foreign office spokesman. “The Royal Navy challenges every vessel that makes an unlawful maritime incursion, and we make formal diplomatic protests to the Spanish Government about all unlawful incursions. “our challenges and protests make clear that such incursions are an unacceptable violation of british sovereignty.”

TREASuRES OF THE CANARIES THERE is bundles of dosh in the Canaries, according to a Treasury report released this week.
In fact, the richest 20% of taxpayers in the Canary Islands accounted for 32% of all reported 2012 income in Spain. And of those Canarians at the bottom end of the scale - the “extremely poor” - 20% ac-
counted for just 7.6% of total declared earnings. but, says the report, as the rich in Spain get richer, the poor get poorer … and the middle-class have all but disappeared. on a national level, the top 20% of earners accounted for 44% of incomes. Yet the gap between the top earners and the lowest earners has widened drastically, with a notable rise in the numbers living be-
low the poverty line. Since 2007, the start of the recession, a further 179,000 people have dropped below the poverty threshold in the Canaries, bringing the total to 637,000 - an increase of almost 40%. Navarra, Cataluña and Madrid had the greatest increase in inequality, and the study highlights that in these areas, there are more people in the top-income bracket. Conversely, the gap
remained stable or reduced in Castilla y león, extremadura and Galicia, where the number of high net-worth individuals is among the lowest. Perhaps the biggest eye-opener is that the number of millionaires in Spain increased by 13% between mid-2012 and the first half of 2013. According to a report by Credit Suisse’s report on world wealth, Spain now has 402,000 millionaires.

THE Arona Sports Board has started the year’s sporting programme following the festive holiday. And from this year, there are physical education programmes for children aged 4-6, as
well as for older kids. These include basketball, athletics, lucha, football and volleyball, along with dancing and choreographic games. The activities are intended to be a first experience in the field of
physical activity and sport for youngsters, where the content is tailored to the needs of exercise as well as developing basic skills and abilities. for those aged 9-11, there is a broader range of sports includ-
ing table tennis, skating and hockey. All the activities offered by the Arona Sports board take place outside of school hours, and classes are held in the sports centres around the borough.

An amendment to the current system, which came into effect on 1st January, was passed by the department responsible for regulating the tax. The system is voluntary, and applies to people or businesses whose turnover does not exceed two million euros a year. Interested parties can apply to join the scheme at the local Hacienda,
but have just one month in which to subscribe. What the amendment means in basic terms is that the payment of the IGIC tax on business transactions can be deferred to a deadline of 31st December in the year following the relevant transactions. but Alberto Genova, Director General for Taxes in the Canary Government does not expect a “flood” of applications, despite extending the application deadline. He believes that necessary changes to accounting procedures of those eligible may deter some smaller businesses from applying, while the system may not be particularly attractive to larger businesses.

Dear editor,
Resolutions?
I read with interest the emails about the disgraceful mess that exists adjacent to the Costamar holiday community in los Cristianos. I agree with all that has been said, and I would point out that there is no water supply on the site, so the amount of washing of their cooking and eating utensils and themselves must be very minimal. Their dirty water and toilet residue go within walking and carrying distance of the site. The site is an eyesore and is seriously affecting the value of property in the area, particularly on the Costamar site. As mentioned, they pay no rent or rates, befoul the area and have the benefit of living in one of the nicest parts of los Cristianos and Tenerife - all for free. It should also be mentioned that this site is a serious health hazard, particularly in such a hot climate as ours. They are also taking income away from legitimate campsites, as can be seen from the complete lack of caravans on the tourist areas of the site situated between Guaza and Silencio. The solution is simple: the council should get the police to clear the site, hire a mobile crane, a lorry and deposit big rocks around the access points, as is done in the uk. They should then erect a steel barrier at the entrance to the site, complete with a heightrestriction horizontal bar to prevent access for vans and caravans.
Who needs them?
Don Riggs
SO how was your Christmas and New Year? Are you sticking to those resolutions?
I find the whole concept outdated. If you want to change something, just do it. Why wait until the start of a new year. That said, plenty of people are giving it a go. I’ve a few friends who are trying to stop smoking.
Well, cigarettes anyway. Instead of just stopping, they have moved on to the e-cig. I’m sure it’s better for them, but it’s still smoking, isn’t it? It’s like somebody who says he’s giving up drinking beer, but now he’s on wine and soda. It’s still alcohol! And if you are sinking two bottles a day what’s the point? Personally I’m taking

this junction to try a few new things. I’ve the “joy” of my 40th birthday on the horizon (as if my pals will let me forget that) and it seems a good time to see what is out there. I’m not talking anything like a Challenge Roscoe, where every week I
do something like water-skiing or flowerarranging. Just the simple things in life which are meant to bring the most pleasure. If you can work out what they are, I will see you on the ride. If you can’t then maybe you are not seeing the big life picture
Dear editor, MAY Helping Hands in Tenerife take this opportunity to wish all supporters a very HAPPY NeW YeAR! 2013 was a very eventful year and we certainly grew at a rate of knots in terms of public awareness and monies raised. That includes the fact that we acquired the extremely worthwhile support of two major travel companies - TuI & Thomas Cook. each has a constant flow of charity fundraisers, and the two companies have kindly chosen Helping Hands in Tenerife as the recipient of these events; massive thanks to both! In addition, we also received substantial donations from Amarilla Golf Club, Wingate School, oasis fm Darts league, Ritmania escuela De baile, Yves Moerenhout and elaine Whillock. People do care, and all involved should be very proud of themselves. Together, we have certainly made a difference. As an example, many of the children we support received presents at their Christmas Party, held at the Premier bar on Amarilla Golf, and they were extremely happy on receipt of these. That the Premier bar staff sacrificed their time, provided party food and separately raised donations for these less-fortunate children was very heart-warming. on-the-ground volunteers are hard to get when it comes to helping out, but I have met some wonderful people along the way who have given their time and support. Marion Yates deserves a special mention. Her support has been immense and the charity has certainly benefitted as a result of her continued hard work. 2014 will be an exciting year ... I can feel it! The main project is to purchase a 20-seat mini-bus for the Children’s Centre Guardyl and, in order to fund this, I am currently planning fund-raising events. There’s a lot of work ahead, of course, but we will enjoy our time at the forthcoming events and, collectively, we will do it - so watch this space! You can keep up to date with us on the facebook Page “Helping Hands in Tenerife”. Please come and join! best wishes, take care and keep in touch! Liz Montague, President, Helping Hands in Tenerife

Sara’s name was picked out from all the hundreds of entrants on Chrismas eve. She scooped the main prize, which was four tickets, plus hotel accommodation and flights to see one Direction when they appear at a Madrid concert in July, booked
through Tenerife Sunshine. She also won 600 euros for spending money, a Spa Day, a kindle, a digital camera, an annual pass to Siam Park, a car DVD head rest and a his-and-her perfume set. In all, the prize package was worth over 3,000 euros, and Sara said when DJ Maggie lennard called her up live on air: “I can’t believe it. It’s just so amazing. It’s brilliant. “My sister is a massive one Direction fan and she will be well jealous! All the other prizes are
great as well, I’m just in shock.” but Sara will be taking her sister to the concert, together with their parents Steve and Melinda, who are the entertainment duo Gee Whizz. big thanks go out to the main sponsor, Gourmetland restaurants in the Vulcano centre, and all our other sponsors: Menny fix, Pit Team, Homes & Away, Rendezvous Restaurant, Venli, eze Group, CbAS, Cards and Candles, Z uniformes, Robot, la Tabaiba Restaurant and Wady Properties.
Whooping cough dries up THE Canary Islands’ whooping cough epidemic, which peaked in 2012, weakened significantly last year. but despite this encouraging news, there was a measles outbreak in south Tenerife during 2013. It was attributed to a group of eight british tourists, who arrived on the Island during the infectious stage of the disease. Ten cases were treated by the Health Service. Previously, there were 46 cases of measles in Tenerife in 2011, and 14 in Gran Canaria five years earlier.

In Santa Cruz alone, around 150,000 revellers took to the streets to welcome the kings and to cheer the procession through the capital’s streets. The reception, at the Heliodoro Rodriguez
lopez stadium, raised 21,000 euros, which will be divided among several charities. A dramatisation of Alice In Wonderland took place on the pitch before the arrival of Melchior, balthazar and
Gaspar, accompanied by an Armed forces helicopter, which performed several fly-bys. Santa Cruz Mayor José Manuel bermúdez was accompanied by fiestas’ representative fernando balles-
teros, who oversaw the kings collecting some final “wish” letters from children before making their way to the streets of Santa Cruz. Amid an almost Carnaval-like atmosphere, the kings were led by
several vehicles from the Tenerife fire Services (complete with sirens blaring) and some Post office motors, along the streets to the Nativity scene in the Candelaria Plaza. The procession ended,
online stores strike gold but a report suggests that those british highstreet retailers still not convinced about the power of the web were left struggling for customers. Accountancy company bDo said non-store December sales leapt 31.1%, peaking to 55.7% in the week leading up to Christmas. Yet high-street sales dropped by 2.2% last month in what was termed an “underwhelming” Christmas for many retailers. This online phenomenon was supported by research carried out by independent retail consultant Richard Hyman. He told the financial Times that online purchases accounted for almost 20% of total retail sales - up 5% on 2012 - with non-food online sales accounting for around one-third of all Christmas sales. The figures showed the sales surge hoped

In the food and beverage services sector, 2,938 contracts were signed, increasing 14.86% over 2012. MAGIC OF THE THREE KINGS This never-ending Series! Car sales driven up in Canaries
By Jav BMW’S 3 Series, which has been around since 1975, has always been a super car to drive, and the latest model continues the trend.
It is really well equipped and more spacious than it has been in the past. And, partly thanks to an excellent range of petrol and diesel engines it a refined and comfortable way to travel as well. It is available as a saloon, estate (called Touring) or 3 Series GT, which mixes the practicality of the Touring with the sportiness of the saloon. The car comes in eight specifications, including the ever-popular M Sport model, and it can be bought with fourwheel drive in the uk now. That means buyers who would usually be looking at Audi’s quattro models have more choice when they come to buy a new car. A system called Drive Performance Control offers three different modes to choose from
- ecoPro, Comfort and Sport - and it’s not hard to tell what each one does. ecoPro is set for economy, while Comfort and Sport speak for themselves. Variable ratio Sport steering and Adaptive Drive dampening are also available as optional extras. A wide range of four and six-cylinder engines are available, with the 320d 181bhp 2.0-litre diesel returning 64.1mpg without sacrificing performance. best performance in the standard car is the 335i’s 3.0-litre turbo
petrol, which reaches 0-60mph in 5.5secs, but it’s quite juicy, returning just 35.8mpg. The 3 Series is not a revolutionary design and, in profile, looks much like the larger 5 Series. It has a sleek headlight arrangement and a large kidney grille, which means it’s unmistakably a bMW. The information display inside is useful, and there aren’t too many buttons to get confused with. A high-resolution screen sits on top of the dash, while colour displays are also set into the simple, four-dial instrument pod. Adaptive brake lights are also standard on the 3 Series, as well as automatic lights and wipers, and rear parking sensors. You can also buy lane-change assist, blind-spot warning
and auto high beams as optional extras on the lower-spec models. The interior of the old 3 Series was a bit small, but this new one is a big improvement thanks to a 50mm longer wheelbase and plenty more room inside the car as a result. There is enough leg and headroom for all passengers, which means the car now rivals the Audi A4 much more closely in this area. A big glovebox, deep door bins and plenty of upholders mean the interior is also sorted for storage spaces. Whether you want low running costs, big performance, or a mixture of both, there’s a classy, executive-style 3 Series to suit everyone, with prices ranging from around £23,550 to £43,690 (28,228-52,605 euros)
THE number of new cars registered in the Canaries last year rose by 14.8%, in contrast to just 3.3% for the whole of Spain. This increase was the biggest of all autonomous regions according to the figures released by the associations of manufacturers (Anfac), dealerships (faconauto) and other sellers (Ganvam). last month alone, a total of 60,513 cars and SuVs were registered in Spain, representing a hike of 18.2% against the same month last year, and bringing the annual total to 722,703
units. Promotional campaigns such as PIVe, in which as much as 4,000 euros can be discounted on the price of a new vehicle when offset against scrapping cars over 10 years old, have been hailed as the main reason for the huge number of new car sales last year. but despite the apparently encouraging figures, faconauto President Jaume Roura said 2013 could not be considered a good year for the industry because targets were set nationally at one million units.
keep the battery charged By Emma Swain NO one likes to spend money unnecessarily on his or her car. But to most people, a car is an important part of their life.
Naturally, they find it difficult to live without one or, at the very least, it’s a great inconvenience if it is off the road for repairs. Regular checks, some of which you can do yourself, may mean that the car will function better and last longer. one of the most im-
portant parts of a car, apart from the engine and gearbox, is the battery. for this to function, it should be charged. Car batteries are all built from the lead-acid design, which was invented in 1859 by a french physicist. This design is actually the oldest rechargeable battery design in existence and it has changed very little over the years. However, the one thing it does do is supply a high amount of current in one go. The battery’s ability to produce a substantial surge makes it useful in meeting the electrical requirements of an automobile’s starter motor. A car battery is rechargeable and it powers all the essential electrical support sys-
tems of the car. Without charge, a car will not start. Most car batteries are of the lead-acid type and deliver roughly a 13.1 volt output. This voltage is a composite voltage delivered by six lead-acid cells, connected in series. The operation of these batteries involves electro-chemical reaction between lead oxide and
lead plates, immersed in diluted sulphuric acid. Charging induces chemical reactions, which store the electrical energy in chemical form. Then the chemical energy is converted back to electrical energy when the battery output is used by the car. Normally, a battery is charged by the car’s
alternator. However, if there are certain problems with the alternator, or if the car has not been in use for some time, the battery may get totally discharged and require external charging. Here in Tenerife, you normally get no notice that the battery is failing - unlike the uk, where starting will be sluggish.
over here, for example you may go shopping, leave the car parked, go back - and nothing! This is quite common and, of course, most frustrating. The solution then is to ask someone for a jumpstart, or call your Grua, who will often jumpstart the car or take you to the garage of your choice. either way, it is important that you go to a garage to have the battery tested. It’s a simple, straightforward test completed in minutes. If the battery does not give the appropriate reading, then a new battery is in order. If you are out and about, you can purchase a battery from a petrol station. but make sure you buy the correct one for your vehicle.
as usual - in the capital, at least - with a hail of sweets for the assembled masses. Meanwhile thousands of people gathered on Adeje’s Calle Grande as the Three kings arrived in a helicopter! Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez fraga used his “magic key”, which opens all doors of homes in the town, so the kings could deliver their presents. Rodríguez fraga
told Their Majesties: “Thanks once again for coming to this meeting to remind us that our wildest dreams are possible. “This is a town where you are determined to establish a peaceful coexistence, where we all fit in. “There are people here from many sources, and we are working with each other to build a big heart that beats in unison on respect, toler-
ance and peace.” During the welcome ceremony, the crowd were entertained by the dazzling cheerleaders from Tenerife Tigers, plus music and dance from several cartoon characters. The traditional parade went along the Plaza Grande and this year there was a big surprise! Artificial snow was scattered from a special car, much to the delight of all the little ones.
ReDuCe PoWeR AND SAVe MoNeY THE cost of electricity has risen again for the Canary Islands’ 1.27 million users.
The average bi-monthly bill, now standing at 80 euros, goes up to 81.84 euros this year. And the way to combat rising costs, according to francisca luengo, Minister for employment, Industry and Commerce, is to reduce consumption, or even switch contracts for a lower power-supply level.
The reduction would be a direct result of the lower standing charge levied for the supply of electricity to a home. electricity bills comprise the standing
Spain’s falling population... charge for the supply, which does not vary, month-on-month, and the amount of electricity used, which obviously does. luengo suggests reducing the standard charge, and has spoken with main supplier endesa, which has agreed to co-operate. but she stresses that consumers will also have to make a con-
scious effort, particularly over the number and power of appliances in operation at the same time. Some 68% of the Canary Islands’ consumers are already on the so-called “last Resort” rate, and a reduction in the power supply would seem to be the next logical step in the battle to reduce costs.
THE National Statistics Institute (INE) latest study into the Census shows a 0.3% drop in Spain’s population in the year to 1st January 2013.
The population of the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife fell by 0.27%. but the Canary Islands showed an
overall increase of 335 people (0.02%) thanks to a rise in the province of las Palmas de Gran Canaria. In fact, the Canaries were the only region in the whole country to register more people. Regarding the western Canary Islands, la Gomera experienced the biggest percentage drop at 5.36% (1,197 inhabitants, as opposed to Tenerife’s drop of
1,098, which equated to just 0.12%). At a municipal level, the highest fall came in Puerto de la Cruz with a staggering 11% reduction (3,636) in the population. Those areas where there was growth were Arona (now exceeding 80,000 inhabitants), Adeje, Granadilla and la orotava, all of which now boast 40,000-plus populations.

LOS CRISTIANOS harbour welcomed the first of what is hoped to be many super cruise liners last week.
one of the most exclusive liners, The World is so big that it had to drop anchor on the “other” side of the breakwater. Some 300 passengers - all said to be millionaires - were then able to use a “tug taxi” to get to inside the harbour, where many enjoyed the shops, cafes and restaurants. others, however, went straight from the liner to catamarans and excursion boats. The ship was docked for 30 hours before heading for Gran Canaria. There will be numerous other ships in the harbour this winter and there is no doubt these incredible luxury liners will become a regular part of the horizon.

And it certainly lived up to its name. There were wall-to-wall parents, grandparents and children, who flocked to church and had one heck of a messy time, making Christmassy things. A wide variety of Christmas crafts were available to make, and all the generations had the excuse to behave like kids. There was a live puppet show, a story and then a Muppets’ rendition of Queen’s masterpiece Bethlehemian Rhapsody. All this was topped off with snacks, and the promise that there would be another Messy Church on Saturday, 25th January from 5-7pm in the church, situated in the basement of Coral Mar. The church held its traditional open-air Carol Service entitled A
Gift in Season in Coral Mar Square. Members also performed a carol service at Wyngate School, and another one on a car park near to where some homeless people, cared for by the church, take shelter. finally, there was a new outdoor caroland-song performance at the Winter Gardens on Golf del Sur. There were two special Christmas songs sung by liz Cairns. Pastor bill hosted all the services and made a special announcement at the last one. from next Sunday (19th Jan), Tenerife family Church will have a weekly evening service at 6.pm in the function room next to the Rendezvous Restaurant in the Winter Gardens complex. everyone, from holiday-makers and residents alike, is welcome to join in. If you have any queries about the service or the Messy Church, please contact Pastor bill Jeffrey on 609 565 528.
APART from having an awesome evening, our Christmas Party on the Top Square, Golf del Sur, raised 1,020 euros.
entertainment, hosted by Suzy q, was provided by live Arico vice-president kerry Railton, Colin Stevens, Caroline from the emerald lounge, Alfie b, and Micky Glamz. It was like New Year’s eve with not a seat to be had. As always, the business owners and staff did their bit, and Riverdance #2 was a blast, with Caroline and Stella holding key positions as the everenthusiastic Suzy q did her best, with newcomer Michael flatulence (Colin Stevens) providing fancy footwork, leather pants and a spectacular blonde wig
for the occasion. Then it was time for the Superheroes! In full costume, Dave Slippers, Howard owen and the one and only Sean Wren stole the show. Jackie, from Ashro Autos, and Wendy, from Cats Welfare, sold a mountain of raffle tickets in their retro gear, and many prizes were donated by Digs 4 Dogs, Claires Grooming, Revs Motors, Debbie Gilbey, Ashro Autos and Mrs Jean blake; as well as some 40 bottles of wine collected by Slippers bar over the past months. Can we better it at easter? It won’t be easy but we will do it - we always do. Many thanks to all who supported the event. don’t forget the oldies Sadly, over the past few days we have taken in several dogs aged 10 or more, which is a crying shame. one wonders wheth-
er a Christmas puppy has taken the place of a senior member of the family, simply cast aside with the wrapping paper. A 12-year-old Yorkie came to us via San Miguel police, who is now adopted; a 10-yearold blind schitzu was abandoned in Granadilla to fend for himself, and an 11-year-old poodle cross found by one of our customers and her dogs in a deep ditch, infested with parasites, maggots and fur so matted she could barely walk. The latter two are being fostered, but efforts to locate their “owners” are proving fruitless. Please consider taking care of an old dog. Imagine how the above three must have felt, in family homes their whole lives only to find themselves alone and unloved. Abandoning any dog is unforgivable, but at this age it is a heartbreak-
ing crime. We normally charge an adoption fee of 110-140 euros for younger, healthy dogs. but we can be far more flexible with the over10s and can even offer ongoing vet care. Please contact us if you can help and would like to explore the possibility further. about her new challenge and says: “I’ve always had an interest in interior design and furniture, and I’m also a people person. “In one way or another, I have always been in sales, so working with the constantly-changing stock and meeting different people of all nationalities on a daily basis won’t be like work at all.” Julie is ably assisted by Dave, who has worked with Gary for a number of years, and he will be there with his wealth of experience to give a
guiding hand. And her boyfriend, Nigel, will be also there to help whenever he is on the Island. Julie promises to maintain and increase the vast selection of fabulous, used furniture and household goods. And she intends to continue with the reasonable prices Rotations has always offered. “Rotations has an amazing reputation, which has been built by past owners over the last 17 years, and this alone offers a great challenge,” she says.
“but I will endeavour to make it even better. We have decided to create a new logo for the shop to reflect the modern-day approach and the stock. “We have been working hard on organising and displaying the furniture we have, and we’re busy sourcing new stock on a daily basis. “Rotations has the largest selection of second-hand furniture and household goods in the south of Tenerife, with over 300 metres of display area and an amazing range of sofas, dining
tables plus beds (new and second-hand).” She adds: “In fact, everything you can think of to enhance your home can be found at Rotations. “We will continue to specialise in house and apartment clearances and we’re aiming to give a quick response to your call and offer you a fair price for any of your furniture and household goods. “If you’ve never paid a visit to Rotations, or if you are a regular customer, please come to
the shop to say hello to me, Dave and Nigel. “And do have a wander round as you never know what you might find. We have massive discounts and offers on at the moment because we have to find more room for the new stock arriving daily.” The shop now has longer opening hours: Monday to Saturday from 9.30am to 6.30pm. You can find Rotations easily, under the Vina del Mar complex, close to the Hotel Gran Tenerife, and directly behind the Accapulco and Copacabana complexes. There is lots of free parking if you are coming by car, so just call the shop and you will be given directions. Rotations has retained the same 922 790 822 landline number but has a new mobile number, 649 523 679, which you are welcome to call out of hours. look out for news of the company’s open day, when clients old and new will be welcomed with a celebratory glass of wine, lots of bargains and a huge clearance sale. Julie, Nigel and Dave look forward to seeing you, and they also wish Gary a happy retirement.

A NEW mobile phone application, which will offer assistance to anyone involved in a traffic accident, has been created by a team of developers in Tenerife. The app has been praised for its simplicity and ease of use, and its specific design for accident victims. It is ready to be rolled out on a national level soon.
Developer Javier García González says that the app provides basic information about where the nearest health centres and hospitals are (if needed). It will also supply information specifically related to legal issues which can arise when an accident happens. unsurprisingly, it has the backing of a
legal firm. The app allows the user to submit an accident form, and Mr González says that once received, a local representative will contact the user to let him or her know how to proceed. The process will be initiated on the same day as the accident, if it is a working day, and the accident happens
in office hours, or on the next working day if the accident occurs on a bank holiday or weekend. The app, called Accilex, is available to download free from the iTunes App Store (in Spanish only as yet), and an Android version will be available soon. https://itunes.apple. com/gb/app/accilex/ id662751636?mt=8

SOME filming for the third series of the erotic Fifty Shades novel will be shot in Tenerife next month.
Stars Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, who play Christian Grey and Anastatcia Steele, will be filming “crucial” beach scenes. filming will also take place in Madrid, where Alessandro Proto the businessman who in-
spired author e.l. James to create the Christian Grey character - is rumoured to be making a cameo appearance. All three films are being shot concurrently, but we won’t be able to see the Tenerife scenes until the release of the final movie Fifty Shades Freed. The first of the trilogy, Fifty Shades of Grey, is set for release the day before Valentine’s Day next year.
It is known affectionately as The Courtyard by the british community. although some stick to The Ribs. but whatever the label, the food is spectacular. The spacious premises do, indeed, feature a courtyard with a tree in the middle, as well as a beautiful restaurant inside. This is a veritable oasis tucked away down a tiny side street of Valle San lorenzo behind the catholic church. If you’re coming from the los Cristianos direction, turn right just past Dorta, the kitchen company, and follow your nose until you come across it, on the right, complete with car park. las Mozas has been there for 13 years, so if you’ve lived here for a while, you will surely have been there at least once. If not, you don’t realise what you’re missing! Some friends, happy to sit at home most nights, venture out for a meal two or three times a year. And guess where they go? Always! And always ribs! And no wonder! It was a lovely evening so we chose to sit outside in the covered courtyard area (where they allow smoking), complete with real
hanging plants and a whole host of long trestle-like tables, ideal for large groups. on colder evenings, less-hardy folk slip inside to the cosy restaurant. With a bottle of Dorada and glass of Canarian red wine in hand, we perused the multilingual menu, which is definitely a meat-lover’s delight. To be fair, if you’re vegetarian, it’s not the place for you, although they will cater for you if necessary Hot bread, “Mojo” sauce, both green and spicy red, together with the not-to-be-missed home-made Ali oli (garlic mayonnaise) were brought to the table. To begin, we shared a reasonably-priced dish of garlic prawns, which were fresh and simply delectable, accompanied by a huge mixed salad. las Mozas is famed for its ribs, but we felt
like breaking with tradition. So for the main event I chose beefsteak; two large pieces of thin steak graced my plate. In fact, so big were they that there was no room to add the salad, or the melt-in-your-mouth Canarian Potatoes. The meat was succulent and tasty, which tells you exactly why people return time after time. My work col-
league chose the T-bone steak, which was bigger than the plate itself. but he made good progress tucking into it until the sheer size defeated him. In fact, we simply had no room left for dessert but enjoyed two cups of their tasty coffee instead. All in all we had a superb evening. It is spotlessly clean, you get
attentive, excellent service and the main reason you go there is for the food, which was spot-on. To reserve a table, call 922 765 597, the restaurant now opens for lunch and goes straight through to the evening for dinner. It’s not that long since they closed for a siesta and reopened in the evening, which suggests that business, as it should be
there, is booming! las Mozas is open six days a week and is closed on Mondays. There is ample carparking and they are now taking bookings for Christmas parties, for which they have a set menu. for more information check out their website www.eralasmozas.com - or find them on facebook.

Wine and cheese tour for cruisers TENERIFE Cabildo is offering a new excursion this year specifically for cruise ship tourists visiting Santa Cruz.
Holiday-makers will be encouraged to experience the Museum of Nature and Man, which is exhibiting a large collection of Guanche mummies, among other historic finds. It is designed to bet-
ter educate tourists on Tenerife’s history. And for this year the Cabildo is also using the chance to showcase local produce. The tour will encompass a large section on the history of Canarian
food and beverages. The history of the Island’s wine-making, the story of local cheeses production and education on how local delicacies were brought to life. There will be sampling of a wide selection of cheeses and wines,
which will be served in the Museum’s cozy, palm-treed courtyard. The objective of this initiative is to promote culture and tourism, along with a different genre, which this year is gastronomy. last month, the tour
received over 1,000 visitors from different nationalities. If it proves to be a success, it is hoped that other food produce and, maybe, a selection of local tipples, will also be included in what could turn into a mini tourist food fayre!

Where on earth can a new planet be found? A NEW planet discovered by scientists has already been “twinned” with Earth in another solar system - 200 light years away.
The planet, koI-314c, is 60% larger than earth and, evidently, much hotter, even though it is believed to weight the same. Scientists reckon its surface temperatures are about 104C, which definitely would not support most life forms on earth. They suspect it has a thick, gaseous atmosphere, making the planet only 30% denser than water. but despite the similar weight, lead astronomer Dr David kipping, from America’s HarvardSmithsonian Centre for Astrophysics, said: “It is certainly not earth-like. “And it proves that there is no clear dividing line between rocky

worlds like earth and fluffier planets like water worlds or gas giants.” The discovery came about by accident as scientists searched for moons using the pow-
erful kepler space telescope. Doctor kipping added: “When we noticed that this planet showed transit timing variations, the signature was clearly down to the oth-
er planet in the system and not a moon. “At first, we were disappointed it wasn’t a moon, but then we soon realised it was an extraordinary measurement.”
A 77-YEAR OLd man died on Monday afternoon while fishing in Las Bajas, Santiago del Teide, after falling into the sea. The incident happened around 2pm and the emergency Coordinator and Safety (CeCoeS) 1-1-2 Centre received an emergency call around 20 minutes later.
A rescue helicopter was scrambled, and the national police also attended. The fisherman, was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to hospital. The first sea-angler’s death of the new year continued a grim trend - more than a dozen people lost their lives off the Tenerife coast in 2013.
Search continues for the missing triathlete AS we go to press, there is still no sign of victor Teni, who went missing on New Year’s day.
The 40-year-old, an accomplished triathlete, has not been in contact since last Wednesday, and his vehicle was found in the mountaineers’ refuge edmundo Herrero in the llano de ucanca region. The Guardia Civil have
been joined by hundreds of volunteers in a desperate search. At the time of his disappearance, authorities were unsure whether he planned to climb Mount Teide or Mount Guajara, and they were looking in both locations. bad weather, high winds and low temperatures have hampered the search, and the storm and snowfall yesterday (Thursday) have further hampered the rescue.
The search and rescue helicopter was grounded yesterday morning, and temperatures of -6C caused the search to be suspended later in the day. Teni competes regularly on the Ironman circuit. His family are clinging to the hope that a man who once competed in the feared Hawaii triathlon has been able to survive 10 days in the harsh, cold conditions.

Doctors and academics say levels must be reduced by up to 30% to halt a wave of disease and death. They discovered that even zero-fat yoghurts can contain five teaspoons of sugar, while a can of Heinz tomato soup has four. The equivalent of 11 teaspoons can be found in a small Starbucks caramel frappuccino with whipped cream. A Mars bar has eight. “Sugar is the new tobacco,” said Simon Capewell, professor of clinical epidemiology at the university of liverpool. “everywhere, sugary drinks and junk foods are now pressed on unsuspecting parents and children by a cynical industry focused on profit not health. “The obesity epidemic is generating a huge burden of disease and death. “obesity and diabetes already cost the uk over £5bn a year - and without regulation, these costs will exceed £50bn by 2050.” Professor Capewell is part of a new uS-uk campaign group, Action on Sugar, which says that asking firms to make voluntary changes has failed. The typical briton consumes 12 teaspoons of sugar a day, and some adults consume as many as 46. The maximum intake recommended by the World Health organisation is 10, although this guideline is likely to be halved. The uN agency says there is “overwhelming evidence coming out about sugar-sweetened beverages and other sugar consumption” being linked to obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. A study by Action on

deadly sugar now ‘the new tobacco’
Sugar found surprisingly high levels of sugar in many foods, including savoury products and healthy options. The Pret a Manger Very berry latte with milk has 26.9gm of sugar - the equivalent of seven teaspoons. Yeo Valley family farm 0% fat Vanilla Yogurt has five. even Glaceau Vitamin Water, which is owned by Coca-Cola, has the equivalent of four teaspoons of sugar in a 500ml bottle. The campaigning Action of Sugar said food firms should be able to reduce the amount of sugar they add to products by 20-30% within three to five years, taking 100 calories a day out of the typical diet. This would be enough to halt or even reverse rising levels of obesity and associated illhealth, it claimed. Graham MacGregor, a professor at the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine in london and Action on Sugar chairman, said: “We must now tackle the obesity epidemic both in the uk and worldwide. “We must start a coherent and structured plan to reduce the amount of calories people consume by slowly taking out added sugar from foods and soft drinks. “This is a simple plan which gives a level playing field to the food industry, and must be adopted by the Department of Health to reduce the completely unnecessary and very
large amounts of sugar the food and soft-drink industry is adding to our foods.” Dr Aseem, the group’s science director, said: “Added sugar has no nutritional value whatsoever, and causes no feeling of satiety. “Aside from being a major cause of obesity, there is increasing evidence that added sugar increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and fatty liver. “We must particularly protect children from this public health hazard, and the food industry needs to immediately reduce the amount of sugar they are adding, particularly to children’s foods. “And they must stop targeting children with massive advertising for high-calorie snacks and soft drinks.” but sugar manufacturers rejected the claims of the health experts, saying they were not supported by the con-
sensus of scientific evidence. The Sugar Nutrition uk organisation said the World Health organisation (WHo) published a review last year which found that any link between diabetes and body weight was through over-consumption of calories and was not specific to sugar. It added: “There have also been numerous studies, which have in-
vestigated potential links between sugar and diabetes, with experts from the british Dietetic Association, european food Safety Authority, and Institute of Medicine being very clear that diabetes is not caused by eating sugar. “Respected expert committees have reviewed the evidence over many years and all have concluded that the balance of available evidence does not implicate sugar in any of the so-called lifestyle diseases.” And barbara Gallani, of the food and Drink federation, an industry group, also denied sugar was responsible for obesity. She said the industry already provided clear information on sugar levels to consumers, using figures and colourcoded labels. ‘Sugars, and any other
nutrient for that matter, consumed as part of a varied and balanced diet are not a cause of obesity, to which there is no simple or single solution,” she added. but Professor Shrinath Reddy, a cardiologist at the Harvard School of Public Health and member of the WHo panel of experts, disputed this conclusion. “There is overwhelming evidence coming out about sugar-sweetened beverages and other sugar consumption links to obesity, diabetes and even cardiovascular disease,” he said. Yoni freedhoff, assistant professor of medicine at the university of ottawa, said sugar needed to become an occasional treat again rather than a regular crutch. He also maintained that added sugar had found its way into virtually everything we eat.

NEW YEAR NEW HAIR
NEW YEAR NEW YOu!
By Carl from Robot
By Ruth Benson
AS you start the new year thinking of how you are going to change your life, do consider changing one thing that’s on show every day … your hair!
IT’S January again and a time to try to succeed at keeping resolutions.
every week, I give you tips and advice to help you look after your hair and style it. That’s because, to me, hair is the one thing that will let you down, or make you stand out from the crowd. There’s no rules to me which hairdresser you should use or which salon is the best for you....this is a matter of choice of finding a stylist that you gel with and that has your hair at heart. None of us is perfect and we all have our flaws. but listening to your stylist and his/her advice is one sure way of seeing good results in the salon, and also at home. I can give advice, but it’s up to my clients whether they take it. I have my opinions, but, at the end of the day, it’s your hair. And having your hair done shouldn’t be a chore. There’s nothing I like better than a challenge: a new style or a total colour change. Maintaining your hair needn’t be hard work – it’s a matter of finding a style or colour that works for you.
As stylists, we are here to help you, but it’s entirely up to you whether or not you want to work with us. I cannot force anyone to have something done to her hair that she doesn’t want. My job is to guide the client. There’s nothing worse than leaving a salon with what the stylist wanted to create. After all, it’s a doublesided job of what you want and what we can do. So take a look at your
hair and decide if this is the year you have a makeover. Talk with your stylists and seek their advice about how they believe they can enhance your hair. Whatever you decide, don’t get in a hair “rut” and stay with the same look because it can be so ageing. finally, if you can’t decide on what to have done, visit your salon for a consultation. This is when we will discuss your ideas - and ours as well - to create a new image for you.
We have all made some kind of resolution, be it to lose weight, eat healthier, stop smoking or drink less, This year, I say that if New Year’s resolutions are for you, then good for you. but for those who don’t want to make them, or will try and probably give up, then this article is for you. Read on to find out what fashion will flatter your figure most. from pear shapes to inverted triangles, rectangles to apples, discover what will suit and what won’t. Hourglass: your wardrobe essential is a pencil skirt, flatteringly worn with a fitted shirt or top tucked in; examples of hourglass include kelly brook and Scarlett Johansson.
Rectangle (or athletic, as it’s also known): the shoulders and hips are the same width, with a defined waist and small bust. Skinny jeans will show off those defined legs, and the boyish look must be avoided. feminine styles such as prints and ruffles give a 3D effect of volume and texture. Think keira knightley. Pear-shaped: these tend to be bottom heavy - bums and hips bigger than bust and shoulders. Prom-style dresses will balance the figure and hide the lower half, defining a flattering A-line shape, like Jennifer lopez and beyonce. Dark trou-
sers or jeans with a boot cut will elongate the legs and shrink wide hips. Inverted triangle: this is an upside-down pear. Strong shoulders and bust with narrow hips, small bottom and slim legs. Wrap-tops or dresses will draw attention towards cleavage rather than the shoulders. Renee Zellweger and Demi Moore are good examples. Apples: these tend to
have rounder shapes with similar size waist, hips and bust. A single-breasted jacket is slimming, and Jessica Simpson is a fine example of the apple figure. Stick to one colour as it will make the body look longer and will highlight your best bits. Petite (usually under 5ft 3ins): mini-dresses and one-shoulder tops and dresses will emphasise your neckline, and short dresses make the legs look longer. Recognisable petites include Nicole Richie and eva longoria. A little-known fact is that pale denim makes the legs look longer. Tall (around 5ft 10ins, with long legs and bodies): long tops and tunics will emphasise the lengthy body, with skinny jeans showing off those long legs. Think livTyler and
Charlize Theron. but whether you are tall or short, an apple or a pear, there is a style to suit you, so embrace yourself and have a Happy New You.

Keep it in the family
unemployment figures falling By Margaret Tully THAT’S Christmas and the New Year over for another 12 months, and it is often a time for family either in reality or in our thoughts.
Iberia increases Tenerife flights IBERIA will increase its number of flights in and out of Tenerife this summer.
The airline will be scheduling 19% more
flights as part of a new, daily frequency between Madrid and here. This includes a daily scheduled morning flight, which will leave Madrid at 11.30am and return from Tenerife
North airport at 2pm. Iberia will also have extra mid-afternoon flights from Madrid on Tuesdays, fridays and Saturdays. The airline is also upping its frequency to and from Gran Canar-
ia and, in July, it will have nearly 100 weekly flights to the Islands from the mainland. Meanwhile, in August, Iberia will supply three extra return flights to Tenerife South airport.
THE number of jobless people in the Canaries was 274,053 at the end of december, representing a 10,862 drop over the whole year.
This equates to a 3.81% reduction in the 12-month period. The unemployed total fell by 3.29% (9,325 people) in December alone, but these figures released by the Ministry of employment include
those who were employed on short-term, seasonal contracts for the festive period. The decrease was echoed on a national level, where an overall drop of 147,385 (3%) was recorded. And 2013 was the first year to see a fall in unemployment since 2006. by gender, the figures for the Canaries are relatively balanced: 136,526 are men and the remaining 137 527 are women. of these, 19,025 are under 25.

This made me think of plants and their families. Quite often, when reading about them, I am surprised to find out that totally different plants, on the face of it, are in the same family. Then I thought of how siblings can have the same facial features but not the same personality, and vice-versa. I guess plant families are no different. When choosing new plants for your garden space, it is a good idea to know from which family the ones you already have belong. If they are growing successfully, then another plant from the same family will, hopefully, do just as well. I am sure you will have or will have seen growing, in and around the Canaries, the Hibiscus plant. The hibiscus rosasinensis, also known as the rose mallow, is a popular choice. This has a beautiful red trumpet or fluted flower, and very large. I have a red variety of Hibiscus and a yellow one in my own garden. In fact, there are lots of hybrids as they are really easy to create. If you want to test your soil pH levels, which can be useful to
the true marshmallow, was used as a laxative, and its roots were boiled to treat coughs. The confection marshmallow derives from this plant, but today’s “marshmallow” sweets do not contain any of the herb, yet they are still delicious. At this time of year, look out for the Indian mallow as it is the perfect time to take seeds, I found some the other day and have sown them. I am sure they will do well in my garden because the Hibiscus I have seem happy. You might have heard of Hibiscus tea. Well, this is made from the buds of the Hibiscus sabdariffa, known as Roselle. It looks nothing like the big-flowered Hibiscus plants we know because it is smaller and has a cherry-like bud. Yet it has lots of health-giving nutrients, including vitamin C. It is really easy to take cuttings from your existing Hibiscus plants if you feel you want more, and especially if your existing plants need cutting back.
know before planting new plants, then the hibiscus rojsa-sinensis flower can be a useful guide. Take a small of amount of your soil and put with a small amount of water and a petal of the flower. Shake it up and, if the solution goes pink or magenta, it is an acid soil. If it goes green, it is neutral. This particular variety also absorbs harmful uV rays, and has been used in skin preparations. However, you must be sure it is this variety as there are now loads of cultivars. As I have said, the other name given to this plant is the rose mallow, which is a clue to which family it belongs - the malvaceae family. In this family, there are the Abutilon palmeri and the Abutilon indicum, both known as Indian Mallow - a yellow-flowered variety of the Marsh Mallow, which has white flowers. This plant has grown wild In the Canaries for years and years, and there are still some around today. Althaea officianalis,
And here’s how: *Select some pieces of the removed growth *Slice the bottom of a soft wood tip (keep about 7in) and remove all the lower leaves and any flower buds (all the energy is needed to make roots) *Push into a pot of compost, down between the side of the pot and the earth *Do the same with a few cuttings and then water well and let drain out of bottom of pot *Place pot in a zip-lock plastic bag and seal. *Put in a light but not direct sunlit place and wait. If the bag gets too steamed up open a little and then close again. You will know when the cuttings have taken when you see new growth or a few roots poking out of the bottom of the pot. Take out of bag at this stage. Transfer each cutting into its own pot, and put back to a bright position to grow on further. once your cuttings are strong, can plant them outside and wait, in anticipation, for the colourful end product.

By Sue Mcdonald MANY people who own property here have bought them as an investment, either to bring in a financial return, or to fund their future retirement home. In either case, it is obviously important to get the best possible return from your asset. Nowadays, the rental market, whether for holidays or for long term, is really competitive, and how you present your property can make all the difference. If you are competing against other properties on the same complex, you need to make yours stand out against the others. This is particularly true if you are marketing through the internet, where any photographs will play a vital part. Sometimes, you need to stand back and take a good, hard look at your property. Does it look a bit tired and run down? (I know the feeling after Christmas). for a small investment, could you make it look more appealing? It is surprising what a difference you can make with a few hundred euros that will create a completely different impression. Sometimes more is required, such as a new sofa bed or curtains. but quite often, a facelift of introducing spectacular colours and a more modern style will do the trick.

In the lounge for example, a few cushions in an accent colour, with the same colour used in a modern abstract picture can update a room. The eye immediately makes a harmonious connection between the items, giving the room a fresh look and more coordinated. In the bedroom, new bedspreads and/or cushions, plus the same trick with a picture, may be all that is needed. If more budget is available, suncurtain is now available in some fabulous shades, adding colour to the room and performing an important role in keeping the sleeping area dark and cool. Another cheap option to revitalise a “tired” property is a quick coat of paint, and also to use an accent colour on one wall. However, you should be aware that bold colours such as red or dark
tones will make a room seem smaller, whereas whites and paler colours will make it look bigger. Mirrors can also be used to open up whole spaces, even if they are in a place where you can’t look at yourself directly. Sales bring bargains and queues!
THE sales season has started in Tenerife, and the early indications are that it will be a bumper time for consumers. It’s also a vital few weeks for the high street as sales over Christmas in Spain have been described as slow. That’s not a big surprise, with the economy still struggling to recover, but experts agree there will be bargains for shoppers. even big chains have started the sales with some lines at 70% off, and this has drawn out the bargainhunters. on Tuesday, the first official day of the sales, Santa Cruz was mobbed with shoppers. And queues at some stores were being
estimated at 90 minutes to the check-out. Some 20% of all sales are on accessories like handbags or jewellery, while shoes are also popular this year. According to a study by the federation of Independent usersConsumers (fuCI), Canary shoppers will spend an average of 72
euros in winter sales. This is considerably less than the average on the mainland and in the big cities like Madrid and barcelona. Some experts are also predicting sales prices to fall further as shops try desperately to claw in cash before the end of the sales season on 6th March.

FREE JuSTICE? ALL IS NOT LOST!
I WROTE recently about the legal taxes and fees that citizens must pay for Justice.
Now, have some more information - and it looks as though all is not lost. In September 2013 the National Court (Audiencia Nacional) started a Constitutional Issue before the Constitutional Court so the latter could determine whether the tax/fee/ bond payable to have access to Justice was in breach of Spanish Constitution. Remember that we are not taking about illegal law or null-andvoid law. The matter refers to the law in order to determine whether it is “according to Constitution” or not. Remember, too, that the Constitutional Court (not to be confused with the Supreme Court) is a Court which sits on special cases in which Constitution rules are involved. The Constitution is the highest law of the legal pyramid and any law, besides being approved following the formalities of Government-Parliament, must be in accordance with Constitution. The Spanish Judicial Power Council reported last June that since the law (which essentially removed free cases to be heard in court) came into effect in November 2012, the num-
19 CW
ber of claims has been considerably reduced. The number in Administrative Courts was reduced by 14.9%. Administrative Courts expected 56,000 cases at that time. but by the end of the period, they had received just 48,164. In National Court, the cases decreased by 36.3%. The legislative Power is in charge to decide a financial system to access to Justice. It could be a free Justice system or a mixed one (partially free and partially paid with fee/tax/ bond). It looks as though the legislative Power has opted for a mixed system. but in this case, there are articles of Spanish Constitution which must be taken into account. These include article 14, article 9.2 and article 31.1. The National Court
is now considering whether the tax/fee/ bond of access to Justice could be in breach of the said Constitution articles: They read like this: Spanish Constitution article 14: Spaniards are equal before the law, without any discrimination for reasons of birth, race, sex, religion, opinion or any other personal or social condition or circumstance. Spanish Constitution article 9.2: It is the responsibility of the public powers to promote conditions so that liberty and equality of the individual and the groups he/she joins will be real and effective; to remove those obstacles which impede or make difficult their full implementation, and to facilitate participation of all citizens in the political, economic, cul-
tural, and social life. Spanish Constitution article 31.1: everyone shall contribute to the sustenance of public expenditures according to their economic capacity through a just tax system, based on the principles of equality and progressive taxation, which in no case shall be of a confiscatory scope. In addition, the Constitutional Court has agreed to study the unconstitutional claims by the Canary Islands, Aragon, Catalonia and Andalusia Autonomous Governments against the law. And in addition to National Court, there are some other Courts which have also presented a Constitutional Issue. The Spanish law Society has asked the Constitutional Court to speed up the proceedings still pending,
and want the Spanish Government to follow the example of french government, which has eliminated the tax/fee/ bond of access to Justice with effect from this month. In Spain, the Government has collected the sum of 101 million euros for such bonds, up to 30th September 2013. This figure is three times lower than the one expected. following the example of the case of National Court, I have presented on behalf of one of my clients (Mr uncal basso) a Constitutional Issue before the Canary High Court of Justice. Mr uncial, who expressly asked me to include his name in this article, was unfairly forced to pay 2,600 euros for a further liquidation of Transfer Tax. He appealed before
the economic-Administrative Court, which ruled that the liquidation made by the Canary Revenue office was right (contradicting previous decisions made by the same economic-Administrative Court). The economic-Administrative Court is a body which belongs to the Ministry of economy and, consequently, part of the executive Power. The decisions of executive Power are subject to reviews by the Judicial Power. If the latter asks for payment of tax/fee/bond and the case is closed if not paid, this could mean that my client would be defenceless. The Canary High Court of Justice in this case asked to Mr uncial to cover the legal bond or the file would be dismissed. According to our petition, the mentioned Court should send the file to the Constitutional Court to reconsider the constitutionality of the tax/fee/bond. I hope the Constitutional Court can change this situation, not only for my client, but for all people unfairly deprived of access to Justice. HAPPY New year everyone. January means one thing: the television channels go on overdrive with holiday shows!
but over the years, holiday shows are not how they used to be. In the years of bI, (before internet) and satellite telly, we all had three channels. bbC 1 & 2 and ITV. The beeb had The Holiday Programme and the other side had Wish You Were Here. The presenters would go to various destinations, which, before the introduction of budget airlines (they are now as dead as the Dodo), cost a fortune. We were told how to get there, how much for half and full-board and the sights to see. It was escapism television for 30 minutes on a Monday. but it seems that times have changed. I don’t know anyone who books a holiday through a travel agent any more - spending an hour on a plastic seat being fed coffee until you’re high from a middle-aged travel consultant with a beehive and a tower of travel brochures on the desk. We all do this from the comfort of our own home now, thankfully. So the

Not-so-Golden Girls
TV-makers travel from london to blackpool to find anyone willing to talk about their holiday nightmares. I mean no disrespect to the people of blackpool, but, watching these shows, you’d be forgiven for thinking there was nowhere else in the uk. It seems that nobody has a good holiday any more. ITV have their own nightmare show, giving us recorded footage of 10ft waves hitting a cruise liner, building works right outside their hotel room and timeshare problems. With this show, at least it takes you around the world. but the one show I have to pick at is on every morning at the minute on bbC 1 called Rip Off Britain: Holidays, hosted by the new Golden Girls, Angela Rippon and Gloria Hunniford. They present this from many well-known coastline bars and restaurants in Tenerife. I have to say that it fills me with excitement, recognising these places, but that’s where the fun ends. They are in Tenerife, reporting on the horrible times people from “up north” have had on the Island. I’m officially not going to go into detail, but it’s the usual, wrong size room, taking ill, taxi scams – basically, the type of problems you’d encounter anywhere in the uk, never mind abroad. So I’m watching for 45
minutes as these two ladies belittle the Island I’ve fallen in love with. The only nightmare I see on this, are the clothes worn by Angela and Gloria. I can only guess they shop in a second-hand clown outfitters as their gear comprises of bright pink and red with balloons and flowers as patterns! okay, everything and everyone on the Island is not perfect, but this bbC show seriously makes Tenerife look like a hell hole. If I owned any of the bars where they record this rubbish, I’d never have them back. So what do we do? Is the Island ever going to live down this made up media tag of “Tenegrief”? If I have my way, yes. I’m asked all the time about my years in Tenerife. That’s by those
unless you happen to be from the london suburbs – How much are you loving Manchester united’s demise? David Moyes has not suddenly become a bad manager, but he is certainly getting my vote for manager of the year. The players are the same, the opposition doesn’t seem to be any stronger (well my beloved liverpool aside) but all it’s all gone wrong. It comes to something when you are getting stick from West Ham fans. At some stage united will click and they still have lots to play for. Today though I’m just going to smile and say WelCoMe To ouR WoRlD!
who have been on holiday and those who have never been. I’ve never made it a secret that I would move back in a heartbeat. but because of personal circumstances, I can’t at this moment in my life. for all those so-called “nightmare scenarios” the bbC seem to rejoice in getting the uk public, I have my own ideas to make people listen. Health care? fantastic. When my son was born, we couldn’t have asked for better treatment. No difference in the state care, as long as you have the correct documentation. All people have to do before leaving for holiday is 10 minutes’ homework on Google. Taxis? obviously there will be a few cowboys, as in every city in the world. but in my experience, clean, courte-
ous and good value for money. Money exchange? Ask around and get the best deal. Simple things for an enjoyable time. but here is where my personal experience comes, which makes the TV-makers’ grumbles null and void. They can have a programme which gives the trials and tribulations of three people per show. I can speak for thousands. for years, I was resident host in Churchills bar, los Cristianos, and in that time I never heard one complaint of a holiday nightmare. In saying that, we had our usual half-beer couple all night who sat there without a smile on their faces. but all establishments go through this, so that’s a nightmare for any host.
We’ve all been there. You wake up in the morning and decide what you are having for tea. You tell your butler, sorry fiance, and spend the rest of the day tasting it in your head. You get through the working day, survive the hassle of getting home, wash and sit at the table ready to devour your feast. And then the gammon steak is plonked in front of you and your stomach turns as it resembles a 3D baby scan! Not impressed.
but I can genuinely put my hand on heart and say that never in my whole time in Churchills did we come across anyone with a bad report. As a matter of fact the owners, louise and Dave, bless them, had to stay for hours waiting for those to drink up. Me, I was paid until midnight only, so I took myself home. but like every other place in Tenerife, it’s those owners, entertainers, staff in shops and pouring your coffee that help you enjoy the holiday that’s been paid for. And this is what should be reported on. Channel five in the uk have a great show about the locals on Gibraltar, and it’s time the ex pats who work day and night on Tenerife to help out, were given the respect. Could it happen? There’s no reason why it couldn’t. Instead of big brother, Life On The Rock would be so much more entertaining. How many times have you watched benidorm and recognised three or four characters? It would be entertainment gold. So it’s time the balance was addressed, and these shows gave time to the 99.9% of holiday-makers who fly to Tenerife year after year. Instead of Angela Rippon and Gloria Hunniford hosting a so-called travel show, they should be first in line for one of the many make-over shows!

Nothing Blurry about Thicke’s achievement YOu would have got a massive price with the bookmakers last January on a “journeyman” singer having the year’s biggestselling record in the uK.
Robin Thicke had released four albums since his debut a decade earlier and, despite some critical acclaim, he was more famous for his duets and writing. That changed when he roped in old pals Pharrell Williams and T.I to produce Blurred Lines. Aided by a sexy video featuring barelyclothed models, he had the smash of the year. The song raced to No.1, selling 300,000 units in a matter of days. It would lead the way for some strong-selling singles in what was another fine year for the music business. If album sales are falling, the singles market remains healthy. Sales of singles in 2013 came close to matching the all-time record of 186.6 million, set 12 months ago. last year saw 182.2 million unit sales, and every song in the official Top 10 biggest Selling Singles of 2013 sold over 700,000 copies. In fact, the stats get better for 2013 as every song that made the end-of-year top 20 sold over half-a-million copies. Along with Thicke, international artistes lead the way. french duo Daft Punk at No.2 and Sweden’s Tom bergling
Best selling songs of 2013 1 BLURRED LINES
aka Avicci at No.3 and No-27 were next. Passenger was the highest charting of the 15 british male artists to make the 2013 list with Let Her Go at No.4, while bastille had a brilliant debut year. They were the highestcharting british group with Pompeii (No.11), while ellie Goulding was the highest-charting british female artiste of 2013 with Burn at No-15. Pharrell Williams made a case for artiste of the
year. He had two million-selling records with Get Lucky and Blurred Lines, while his song Happy was the last No.1 of 2013. Macklemore and Ryan lewis broke out big time. Their anthem Thrift Shop was a global smash and they backed it up with the even better Can’t Hold Us. Rihanna and britney Spears both had two big hits, while there are hat-tips for Miley Cyrus, katy Perry, Jessie J, Will.i.am and Calvin Harris. lana del Rey, lumineers and Imagine Dragons made a real statement, while there was one of the great chart battles of recent years. oneRepublic‘s Counting Stars went head-to-head with The Vamps’ Can We Dance in September and it went right down to the wire. oneRepublic eventually took the top spot by just 1,150 copies.

IT’S ALL ABOuT
THE vOICE The blind Auditions
Well worth the hangover AS another new year begins, so does the hangover. The social networks show that everyone had lots of festive fun.
The Island was buzzing - and still is - and although many artistes were affected by the annual flu outbreak, all went well and Tenerife proved yet again that it is “party central” at this time of year. Personally, I had the best New Year’s eve I’ve had as an entertainer in all the years
I have spent on the Island. I hosted a joint event between Mikeys bar and Taylors lounge on
el Mirador strip, in los Cristianos. An outside stage was set up between the two bars, a PA system was linked
into the two bars either side. It was a pleasure to work and completely different to any oth-
er New Year I have brought in on the Island. The format worked so well for both bars and the hundreds of people who attended - so much so that Taylors and Mikeys are planning to do this throughout the year. They plan to put on an extravaganza of entertainment, with both bars collaborating to recreate their huge success of New Year’s eve. After the bells at midnight, Sebastian Whittaker and Mr. D, two American soul singers, took to the stage with their new duo show,
Soul + Soul. They kept the crowd dancing for over an hour with some classic soul and Motown. The whole street was bouncing. It was just like a street party and everybody had the time of their life. This was happening all over Tenerife, and many bars were experiencing the same atmosphere. And judging by the photographs posted on facebook, this year seemed a lot busier than the last few years. long may it continue, and Happy New Year to everyone.

THe All-STAR RuMPoT THE Rumpot pub in San Eugenio plays host to a plethora of artistes offering a variety of entertainment, with tribute artistes, comedians and singers. It has built up a large following of regular customers over the years and is a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment scene of Tenerife. The programme has been put together by owner Steve Martin, who has worked on the island as an entertainer for many years and also acts as resident compere. Steve is an extremely talented man and very humble about his ability. He is known as “Taffy” in the bar and, as you may guess
from the nickname, he hails from Wales, a country not shy of producing some amazing singers. Taffy also plays guitar to a very high standard and performs his own show in the bar called The Beatles Story. He is certainly a compere without compare. The Rumpot is a family-run business and, with
his partner karen and son Stephen, along with their staff, they create a lovely atmosphere with some top-class entertainment. Award-winning comedian billy Porter, who packs the place every week, and has been in getting bums on seats consistently since his arrival in Tenerife. The
THe Mega Rock Café, situated within the Mega bowl building in fanabe ,has been growing in popularity over the last few months. It offers top-class entertainment, a fabulous menu from the Americanstyle diner and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Terry ellens is the resident DJ/compere from Wednesday to Saturday, offering karaoke and some tunes from Terry, who is also a bit of a crooner himself. later this month, on 25th January, Terry and Mega Rock will be holding a charity event in aid of Help for Heroes. There will be lots happening throughout the afternoon with many of the Island’s artistes giving their time and performing a small set. These events are always worth a visit, and all for a worthy cause. Tickets are five euros and all funds from ticket sales go to the charity. Get your tickets from Mega Rock Café and support this event at Mega Rock Café, fanabe.
Rumpot is also a place you can visit during the day and has a full wifi service for patrons, and more-than-reasonable bar prices. With Taffy and his team, you will exceed your expectations at The Rumpot. It is well worth a visit while you
are on holiday here and, as a resident of the area, I need say no more. Many of you will already be aware of the high standards produced in this top entertainment bar. You can find The Rumpot on facebook at https://www. facebook.com/rumpot
THE voice is back for a third series and the famous red chairs are to be filled with a new line-up of megastars as pop icon Kylie Minogue and Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson join Sir Tom Jones and will.i.am in the search for the uK’s next vocal sensation. This series welcomes new presenters emma Willis and Marvin Humes who will be with the acts throughout the blind Auditions,
consoling and congratulating. The ever-popular coaches’ group performance returns this year as kylie Minogue, Sir Tom Jones, Ricky Wilson and will.i.am perform an exciting arrangement of familiar songs… The auditions are about one thing and one thing only - The Voice. each Coach picks the artist that they want to work with based solely on what they can hear.
facing away from the stage, the coaches cannot see what the artists look like – if they like what they hear and they want to mentor the voice, they hit their famous red buttons and turn round to see the performer. With the chance to be personally mentored by one of the four superstars, the artists will be hoping that at least one Coach turns their chair for them. If more than one
coach turns round, the coaches must pitch for the artist – they’ll employ their years of experience, their legendary contacts and their unique talents to try to persuade the very best acts to join their team. each Coach must form a team of 12 artists. once each Coach has a full team, they will advise and mentor them through to the next stage of the competition - the battle Rounds.

In new bbC one series Hidden kingdoms we follow the story of a young male on the verge of independence. After avoiding rattlesnakes and tarantulas, he becomes separated from his home and family during a flash flood. Grasshopper mice are nocturnal by nature, and when he finds himself unexpectedly homeless and exposed during the desert day, he faces the unfamiliar dangers of this inhospitable place. The power and athleticism of the tiniest creatures escapes our notice until the Hidden kingdom cameras get close to the action. A ring-tailed lizard and a collared lizard accelerate so fast that they end up running on two legs - an adaptation that allows for greater speed. using miniature tracking cameras alongside them as they run reveals that the highly developed extensor muscles in their rear legs not only give them speed but the ability to leap many times their own body length.

It is the day of the grand reopening of Blow ‘n’ Go, the Solana’s hair and beauty salon, and Kenneth has hired a huge inflatable for the occasion. While helping to set it up, Liam bumps into the beautiful Bianca Dyke and immediately decides that he has fallen in love. Donald and Jacqueline receive some sad news - their friend Big Donna has died. They are consoled by the return of Martin Weedon who is at the Solana for a stag party, which gets rowdy enough to disturb all the other guests. The lads narrowly avoid getting chucked out, but only by handing over wads of cash to both Joyce and Mateo. Madge is determined to stir things up with the Dyke family, while Janice, Mick, Tonya and Clive all do their best to ignore her. Meanwhile, Tiger and Michael find Madge’s tanning pills and sell them on to the stag party boys, claiming that they are special party treats and just what is needed for a big night out in Benidorm.

The Voice returns for a third series, as pop icon Kylie Minogue and Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson join Sir Tom Jones and will.i.am in the search for the UK’s next vocal sensation. This series welcomes new presenters Emma Willis and Marvin Humes, who console and congratulate acts as they face the first of the blind auditions. This stage of the competition sees each coach pick the artists that they want to work with based solely on what they can hear. Facing away from the stage, the coaches cannot see what the artists look like. If they like what they hear and want to mentor the voice, they hit their famous red buttons and turn round to see the performer. With the chance to be personally mentored by one of the four superstars, the artists are hoping that at least one coach turns their chair for them. If more than one coach turns round, the coaches must try to persuade the acts to join their team. Kylie, Sir Tom, Ricky and will.i.am also perform an arrangement of familiar songs.

BBc News 22:15 ... Manchester City declared their intent to regain the title they won in 2011-12 by beating Newcastle 4-0 in their first match of the current campaign. However, Alan Pardew’s men have recovered from that disastrous start to climb the table, thanks largely to the goal-scoring form of France striker Loic Remy. But City boast plenty of firepower themselves, with Sergio Aguero, Alvaro Negredo and Edin Dzeko all proven finishers. Liverpool’s victory against Stoke in August was the first of three successive 1-0 wins for Brendan Rodgers’ side. However, the Reds know from experience that the Potters are tough nuts to crack on home turf - Liverpool have lost their last three Premier League games at the Stadium of Light. Mark and guests also look back at the goals from Saturday’s seven matches.

Britons consume millions of cups of tea each day, but how many know where the tea comes from? Perhaps surprisingly, most of the leaves in everyday teabags do not come from India or China but are bought at an auction in the coastal city of Mombasa in Kenya. From here, Simon follows the tea trail through the epic landscapes of Kenya and Uganda and meets some of the millions of people who pick, pack and transport tea.

Operation Grand Canyon With dan Snow BBC2, 21.00
Dan Snow and team continue down the Grand Canyon in antique wooden boats as they rediscover one of the Wild West’s great adventures of discovery. Tucked in the South West corner of America, no one had ever attempted to brave the Grand Canyon and its many dangerous rapids until 1869, when a band of Wild West pioneers took it on. Nine men, led by a onearmed civil war veteran, Major John Wesley Powell, entered one of the world’s deepest gorges. All ran close to starvation, while some attempted to escape the canyon and were never seen again. Through Powell’s expedition and his scientific survey of the river and the surrounding geology, what had been called ‘The Great unknown’ became part of the map of America. but, since 1869, no one has ever attempted to navigate all 280 miles of the Grand Canyon in the manner of the original expedition - until now.

Three-part nature documen- ch tary. Three charismatic animal families, capuchin monkeys, giant otters and coatis, strive to raise their families against a backdrop of extraordinary landscapes and huge extremes of weather - a beautiful yet dangerous world full of jaguars and caiman. An intimate journey to the heart of a spectacular country, this first chapter of the trilogy sees the babies taking their first steps during a brief pause between seasonal extremes.
First of a three-part series in which Paul O’Grady visits Zambia and South Africa on the trail of young animals which have been orphaned in the wild, either through the actions of poachers or through farming forcing them out of their natural habitats. Paul’s first stop is the seabird sanctuary of SANCCOB, on the southwestern tip of South Africa. Here a variety of birds, including penguins, are cared for. Penguins are now an endangered species in Africa, with numbers reduced by 75 per cent in recent years. At the Lilayi Elephant Nursery in Zambia, Paul is excited to meet a group of baby elephants whose parents have been killed by poachers. He soon falls head over heels for a six-monthold calf called Nkala. Finally at the Kruger National Park’s animal rehabilitation centre of Moholoholo, Paul learns how lion cubs which have been rejected by their mother are being looked after.

A Great Welsh Adventure with Griff Rhys Jones ITv1, 20.00
“I’m setting out on a personal odyssey, you see I was born in Wales but brought up in essex and now I’m coming back. I want to get to grips with a wonderful, magical, remarkable country – Wales.” Griff Rhys Jones Griff visits the Gower peninsula, an area made up of 30 miles of dramatic coastlines, 50 beaches and 70 square miles of farm and common land. Griff ’s challenge in this programme is to provide a meal for a famous Welsh rugby player using only locally sourced food. The Gower was once almost cut off from the mainland so has learnt to be self-sufficient and use locally sourced products. Griff explains: “They say Wales is like a continent in miniature – it’s got every conceivable form of landscape and the Gower is like a continent in microcosm because it’s got fantastic country lanes, it’s got moorland, hills, it’s got caves and cliffs and marshes.” The Gower Peninsula is located between llanelli and Swansea which were once the biggest industrial towns in the country.
