Caravans make our lives so miserable

‘We always dread weekends’ Continued from Front It’s not just the big swarm of campers arriving for the main holidays like Easter that upset the locals. They have come to dread every Friday night, when they start rolling in for three days. Long-term parkers in the streets of Avenida de Amsterdam and Calle la Caleta, as well as in the official 72-hour bays overlooking Callao Beach, bring a trail of problems, from rubbish and children, to dogs running wild, together with late-night noise. Several caravans in Avenida de Amsterdam this week were too big to fit in the bays, so they were parked longways. And, in the official area by the beach, residents have seen caravans drive around the block and then return to get a new 72-hour allowance. Those living in Parque Tropical 1, 2, and 3, and El Rincon, who have borne the brunt of these visitors for years, dread the summer weekends and holidays, when the numbers outside their properties swell to intolerable levels. One resident, who wishes to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals, told Canarian
Weekly: “We have been fighting this situation since 2003, and it gets worse by the year. There are caravans everywhere. People are sleeping in their cars and in tents, and we residents often have nowhere to park. “In addition, they are using our gardens and pavements as toilets, and our bins are full of their rubbish. I walked out of my garden the other day, and there was a great big pile of dog poo on the pavement outside the gate. “And, one day last week, there were nearly two accidents: one where a dog ran into the road, and another when a child did the same. Both times, the cars had to brake very quickly. “We also have young boyracers who drive around here in the evening. If any animal or child runs into the road when they are roaring past, there will be a serious accident.” The official tourism parking zone allows drivers to leave their vehicles there for a total of 72 hours. But this is often abused by drivers. There are 22 spaces in this permitted zone, and a nearby point to empty toilets, etc. But even when this zone
is only part-full, people choose to park in the streets instead. There are no signs in the main streets, warning about illegal parking. The addition of these signs, with warnings of fines or confiscation by grua pick-up trucks, has been suggested as a cheap and partial solution. But it has yet to be acted on. Spanish Law makes a distinction between parking and camping. Parking is if the vehicle is inside the marked limits, and inside activity doesn’t overflow outside, such as awnings, stabilising supports, etc. Residents have frequently witnessed tables and chairs outside vans. And when the official parking spaces near the beach were added several years ago, a set of rules was produced, but these rules are seldom enforced. A group of residents had an amicable meeting on 6th April with Arona Security Councillor Raquel Garcia, who said the Council would monitor the situation over Easter and do something about the problem. The resident told Canarian Weekly: “We haven´t seen a
policeman since, and some of these vans have been here for six months now, without moving. “We have suggested that the Council could build a bigger, legal parking zone on waste land. Charges would cover the costs, and would give illegal parkers no excuse for using our streets.” These are the rules created by the Council a couple of years ago: 1. Motor-homes can park in the 22 spaces provided for a maximum 72 hours 2. It is not allowed to have any camping items, such as awnings, tables, chairs, drying of washing, etc, outside the vans 3. It is forbidden to have the engine running at any time, and electric generators are not allowed 4. Hinged windows may only be opened without exceeding the scope of the mirrors to avoid accidents 5. No external thermal protection to be placed on any of the windows; only on the interior 6. The emission of any type of fluid, pollutant or not, unless it is a characteristic of the combustion engine through the exhaust pipe, is
forbidden. The anonymous resident added: “They are breaking every single rule, every day they are here, and Arona Council and the local police are ignoring the situation. “No one seems to want to help, but why can’t Arona give these people some land, create facilities, showers, toilets, toilet-waste disposal, bin rooms and play areas for children to keep them off the road? “If these caravans were parked outside the Cultural Centre or anywhere else in Los Cristianos, they would be moved on. And if I parked outside the white lines, I would be fined. So please tell me what the difference is. “Home-owners around here are paying a lot of rates (Catastral). But why should we pay anything at all when we have to live on a camping site and accept the mess that comes with it? “There must be something that can be done.” Canarian Weekly is awaiting a response from Arona Council, but, in the meantime, residents are bracing themselves for more weekends of problems on their doorsteps.
Spanish Royals will visit London during Election SPAIN’S King and Queen, Felipe and Letizia, will go ahead with their planned three-day visit to London, finishing on 8th June, the date British Prime Minister Theresa May has called for a snap General Election. Despite predictions that their trip would be postponed, The Queen will go ahead with plans to host
the royal couple’s state visit. And the Prime Minister’s official spokesman said Downing Street is sure the Spanish royal visit will continue, as scheduled. “The precise details will come in due course, but the visit itself goes ahead as planned,” he said. Unless the format is changed, it means that Mrs May, her senior Cabinet ministers, and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, will be expected to attend a colourful, ceremonial welcome for the royal couple on Horse
Guards Parade on 6th June. They will also be invited to attend a state banquet in honour of Spain’s royal couple at Buckingham Palace that evening. The Prime Minister and the opposition leader would normally be expected to hold bilateral meetings with the visiting head of state during the three-day visit, which ends on the day Britons go to the polls. The trip by the Spanish King and Queen should have taken place last year, but it was postponed because of political instability in their country.
THE King and Queen of Spain, Felipe and Letizia, are making their first official trip to the Canary Islands on Monday and Tuesday (24-25th April). They will visit Gran Canaria and Tenerife to learn more about projects linked to the archipelago’s social and economic development.

Thief caught red-handed A SAN Isidro resident was caught red-handed and arrested by the Guardia Civil in the middle of what transpired to be his second break-in at local companies. Officers later discovered that he had committed a robbery in other premises close to where they arrested him. They recovered various items stolen in his first raid, including a wine refrigerator and a large, industrial gascooker. They have since been returned to their owner, and the thief will be dealt with in the Granadilla Courts.

Robber’s bloody evidence trail! POLICE in Telde, Gran Canaria, have arrested a 44-year-old man for committing three robberies in commercial premises in just two hours. The National Police say the man, who has an extensive criminal record, cut a leg during the first robbery. Then, without noticing, he left a trail of blood at the other robberies. A bystander told officers he had seen a man breaking into business premises. He was reported to have fled across the GC-1 motorway, heading south, leaving his blood at the entrance door. Minutes later, another report was received from a restaurant staff member, who said the security
alarm had gone off. Police found a glass door broken there, and also a vending machine for drinks which had been broken into. Then, just 500m away, another security alarm went off, and, at this business, a door was broken and the inside ransacked. Thanks to descriptions by witnesses, officers found and arrested the intruder swiftly. He was hiding behind the wall of a nearby petrol station and had various cuts on one leg, which were bleeding. He had also put socks on his hands to avoid leaving fingerprints. But he obviously wasn’t smart enough to outwit police, or the public!

Man warned that he would kill his pregnant partner A FATHER who physically assaulted his pregnant partner, and made threats to “kill” her, was arrested by police on their second visit to the Santa Cruz home. The woman has three children, aged one, nine and an 11-year-old daughter, who telephoned 112 and reported the abuse to police. But when they arrived at the 31-year-old woman’s residence, she played down the incident. But they notified the girl’s
father, who soon collected her. Then, a short while later, police received a call from the victim, who said she had been assaulted by her partner. The officers returned to her home and confirmed that the woman had been hit in the face and stomach by her partner. She also insisted that he’d also threatened to kill her. The 41-year-old was arrested and will appear before the courts. The victim, along with her children, was treated at the local health care centre, where she was also advised of the resources available to her.
They were apprehended late last month in Santa Cruz, after the Spanish man had taken advantage of a careless delivery driver, who left his van door open. It cleared the way for the Spanish man to help himself to four new laptops, worth 1,055 euros. Police recovered the laptops and also found the thief and his two accomplices, aged 32 and 26, who had sold them on. They have since been returned to their rightful owner. The investigation was carried out by National Police, attached to the Judicial Police Unit, and the matter is now being handled by the courts.
Mum and her baby rescued A WOMAN, who fell down a 10m hole with her 19-month-old baby while walking their dogs in a Gran Canaria park in Maspalomas, were both rescued by firefighters. Emergency services were called by neighbours, who heard a baby crying, and the 40-year-old mum’s calls for help, after they had disappeared in an opendrain siphon. The firemen rescued them from a dark, 10-metre-deep tunnel, which must have terrified the pair. They took them to San Roque Hospital, where nurses confirmed that mum and her toddler were safe and sound, with no injuries.

Paedo paid nude kids with credits
A JUDGE in Zaragoza is to investigate a denuncia filed in Tenerife against a paedophile living in Zaragoza, who is alleged to have obtained nude photos of young girls via Instagram, by offering to add credits to their mobile phones. The denuncia was placed in June 2014 by the mother of a 15-year-old who lives in La Orotava. The Supreme Court has agreed that the
Zaragoza judge will take charge of this case because the paedophile lives there, along with other minors who have also sent him nude
photos in exchange for 10euro credits put on their mobile phones. The case is still under investigation in Zaragoza.
What’s wrong with girls’ crochet class, and boys’ football? MADRID’S Education Department has sent inspectors to the state-subsidised Roman Catholic Juan Pablo II school, in Spain’s dormitory town of Alcorcón, to investigate complaints of sexual discrimination, relating to the centre’s extra-curricular activities. For instance, there is a crochet class exclusively for girls, while a boys-only visit to Real Madrid’s Bernabéu football stadium coincided with female pupils visiting a soup kitchen, according to radio station Cadena SER. The school, part of the Educatio Servanda chain of institutions, is one of 18 governmentsubsidised private schools in the region keeping girls and boys apart. If inspectors have uncovered dis-
crimination in the school’s extra-curricular activity programme, Madrid’s regional government could impose penalties, said spokesperson Ángel Garrido. School Director Carlos Martínez was fined in December by the regional government for sending out a letter containing homophobic references. Specifically, he compared recent legislation guaranteeing the rights of the capital’s LGBT community with “fanatical terrorism”. The school’s website now runs a support campaign for the Director, which includes anti-transgender messages similar to those plastered on the side of a bus. The bus is used by ultra-conservative Catholic group Hazte Oír (Make Yourself Heard),
which was ordered off the streets by Madrid City Hall at the end of February. Madrid’s education policy clearly states that subsidised schools must inform the department of extracurricular, termtime activities, so that it can ensure they meet requirements. They should, for example, be voluntary and not-for-profit. Madrid Education Department officials, who were not informed of the Juan Pablo II activities, will draw up a report following the inspection. The Department has said that instructions were given to government- subsidised schools, summarising all the rules concerning extra-curricular activities at the start of the year.

Big headache for the health-centre thieves
A 39-STRONG group, arrested in Gran Canaria for falsifying documents and fraud concerning public-health centres, included 30 people with criminal records. In addition, eight of the group have since been charged with selling drugs on the black market. These drugs were withdrawn from pharmacies in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, and Santa Cruz, Tenerife, following the theft of health centres’ prescriptions and stamps. In all, the National Police have uncovered 2,200 fake prescriptions dated throughout 2015 and 2016. The investigation, called “Operation Taco”, began when officers seized a large number of pre-
scriptions for psychotropic drugs from a man who produced a Canary Health Service Card photocopy, which, clearly, didn’t belong to him. As a result, police learned about the theft of a large number of prescription books and medical stamps, whose holders did not recognise the signatures or calligraphy embodied in medical documents. This led to the huge number of counterfeit prescriptions, most of them in the Canaries, and some in the province of Granada, as well as identifying 53 people involved. Finally, police in Las Palmas arrested the 39 people, aged between 22-60, for documentation forgery and fraud.

Rajoy’s aiming for 20 million in work
Drug was 80 times stronger than pot TWO Brits were arrested in Spain after Guardia Civil officers intercepted deadly, synthetic drugs, hidden in sacks of coffee and worth 3.5m euros on the street, at Alicante-Elche airport. The drugs had been flown in from Hong Kong and the two English residents of El Campello, near Alicante, aged 36 and 37, were held. The Guardia, which described the drug as “80 times more powerful than
cannabis”, said a total of 12.2 kilos of the substance had been discovered. It is consumed by dissolving it in water before spraying onto a cigarette. The operation began in mid-March, when officers got hold of packages bound for a bar frequented by the English community in El Campello. Spanish authorities put the bar under surveillance, which led to the arrest of a 36-year-old suspect, collecting mail for the gang importing the drug, according to sources. The second suspect was arrested two days later at Alicante-Elche Airport as he tried to leave Spain.
Hotel thief nabbed
A WOMEN has been detained by the Guardia Civil for stealing 800 euros from a safe, a Nintendo games console, a camera, and various documents in a Los Gigantes hotel.
Staff reported the theft, and officers soon found the culprit, a regular customer there. They recovered all the stolen items except the Nintendo. She has been handed over to Arona Courts, and Guardia officers are now looking for the woman’s boyfriend because they believe he might have been involved in the incident.
MARIANO Rajoy has one major aim during his term as Spanish Prime Minister: “to have 20 million people in work by the end of this legislature”, and, he says, Spain is heading in the right direction. Rajoy was outlining his plans at the opening of the new Social Security integrated headquarters in Segovia, north-western Spain. “Today is a good day for the Social Security system,” he said, and went on to describe the latest unemployment figures and National Insurance data as “very good”. He added: “It was the best March ever in terms of employment … over 162,000 more people paying National Insurance into the Social Security system; over 600,000 when compared with March last year, and the reduction in unemployment is also very significant, with over 10% in the last year.”
Rajoy believes that permanent employment is the one figure which “encourages us to persevere”, and the number of permanent contracts has risen by 18%, with full-time employment contracts up by more than 20%. The new, integrated headquarters of the Social Security system in Segovia is, said Rajoy, “a commitment to the future of one of the most highlyvalued institutions in Spain”. He added: “This institution represents both intergenerational solidarity (the National Insurance paid by workers guarantee current pensions) and inter-regional solidarity (the single-pot model guarantees the payment of pensions throughout the country). “Spain has modern Social Security, with a system capable of paying over 9.5 million pensions, and managing over 40 different social benefits.” But Rajoy said the recession led to the loss of 70bn euros from tax revenue. “By the end of 2017, the public authorities will again be receiving the
same revenue as 10 years ago,” he stressed. In spite of that revenue decline during the crisis, added the President of the Government: “Spending on pensions rose by 40bn euros. And Spain is able to maintain that spending while, at the same time, continuing to reduce the public deficit.” Rajoy outlined the years of economic crisis, saying: “Three jobs were lost for each new pension paid out from the system, but that situation has now been reversed. For each new pension paid out from the system, six jobs are being created.” The key to maintaining the pension system is to sure there are more people in work, he said. “And, as things stand today, I am optimistic.” The Prime Minister also referred to the General State Budget, “drawn up with a view to maintaining the recovery”, which has been approved by the Council of Ministers. “Six out of every 10 euros will be dedicated to social spending,” he pledged.

La Pasión brings out true passion within the Adeje thousands THOUSANDS of spectators, flocking from all parts of the island and beyond, packed into Adeje on Good Friday to witness “La Pasión”, the borough’s magnificent presentation of the last days and crucifixion of Jesus.
More than 300 amateur actors, recruited locally, were involved in the production, which took place, as usual, along the town’s Calle Grande. The spectacle was broadcast regionally on TV Canaria and nationally on 13 TV and on the local station, Radio Sur, as well as online on Adeje Council’s webpage. One local, Church of England priest summed it up perfectly, saying: “It’s the first time I have seen the event, and it really is magnificent, as well as moving. It was so believable that you couldn’t take your eyes away from what was unfolding.” Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga congratulated all those who took part, as well as the team behind the performance, without whom it would not have been possible. Rodríguez Fraga said: “What is important is that even though this has huge tourist interest, and we are delighted to share the event with all who attend, it has evolved from our culture, from our way of life here, involving the whole town. “The level of participation among the people of Adeje is immense. Not all of them were born here, and many are from other parts of Spain and far beyond. But it all helps build us as a community.” He added: “The entire
performance tells a timeless story, and it shows human beings moved by friendship, love, cruelty, treason and abandonment… elements which are part of human history, with cultural and traditional ramifications.” La Pasión has been held in Adeje for 23 years, from humble beginnings. It began as a local community initiative - a small, theatrical presentation outside the Santa Úrsula church. It has grown and grown over the years and incorporated

different stages, enriched by local historical additions, costumes and music. On Friday, it started at the Plaza Cruz del Llano with the Last Supper and ended with the crucifixion in the Plaza de España. The part of Jesus and Mary were played by José Antonio López and Ana Oneida Borges Medina, both from Adeje, along with hundreds of local, amateur actors. Rehearsals took over a month, and the performance was directed
by Laura Marrero. Culture Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera added: “We also have to acknowledge the participation of groups, including la Librea de Valle Guerra, the Adeje School of Music and Dance, and Ballet Beanky, as well as the professional actors who offered their services for the performance, such as Baltasar Isla, Nacho Almenar and Juancho Aguiar.” The staging of this event has become a regional reference point at Easter, marking Adeje out as a borough of cultural values. The Council congratulates all those who work to make this such an important event, as well as those involved in parallel events, such as the Cooking at Lent establishments, all striving to ensure that Adeje really is a special place to visit and live in. José Antonio López, who has now played the part of Jesus Christ for 12 years in Adeje, told the Council’s English Time programme before this year’s parade: “It is an event the
people of Adeje have immense pride in, whether they are actually taking part directly or not. “And it allows us to demonstrate our ability to generate culture, beauty and respect for traditions; something which does garner admiration and recognition for the town. “Apart from the times I have portrayed Jesus, I have also been involved in other years, playing various parts. In fact, there have only been three years that I haven’t taken part, when I was studying abroad.” He added: “Every year there are different nuances. We have a very creative and innovative director, who always brings new elements into the performance that enhance the event, while respecting what is the essence of Adeje’s ‘La Pasión’. “Personally, I feel as though it is the first time every year, with a sense of expectation … an eagerness to see how we will perform, and how we are going to experience this year’s event.”

The Volcano erupts, sparking a manhunt A CRIMINAL, known as The Volcano, is being hunted by the Guardia Civil and Local Police for his alleged involvement in torching two caravans and wooden shack in El Puertito, Armeñime. It is the home of his former partner, whom he assaulted
before starting the blaze, then fled the area. The fire started at around 3.30pm on Wednesday. It mainly affected the caravan in which the victim lived, before spreading to the other caravan and the shack by the time firefighters arrived. Local Police, along with the Guardia Civil, promptly began an intensive manhunt in the Playa Paraiso area. But as we went to press, the 31-year-old suspect,
identified as JFGG, had still not been located. The Volcano, a well-known criminal with an extensive police record, was arrested on Tuesday for a similar incident in an abandoned hotel in Callao Salvaje. But after appearing before magistrates on Wednesday, he was released and headed straight to his ex-partner’s residence, where he assaulted her physically. He was then believed to have torched her caravan home.
Chinese forced women to work ‘as prostitutes’ SPANISH authorities have arrested a gang of 25 Chinese people, believed to have forced women to work as prostitutes. Police have freed 22
women in Barcelona, who were brought to Spain, allegedly, with false identity documents. A judge provisionally jailed 11 of the 25 gang members, releasing the
A BOY of seven spent the last day of his Easter holiday in Gran Canaria’s Materno Infantil Hospital after crashing through a glass door and suffering serious injuries, especially to his throat and left leg. The accident happened in a bungalow at Mogán, where he was staying with his family. Paramedics assessed his injures and promptly sent for an emergency helicopter to airlift him to hospital. Firemen closed off the roads to an Amadores roundabout, which was used as a helipad. And, on arrival, the youngster was taken to the theatre immediately.
Hiker’s helicopter rescue
A HIKER in La Laguna, who clung to a bush for dear life after a tumble near cliffs in Batán, was rescued by helicopter and carried to the safety of Punta del Hidalgo. His minor injuries were treated by paramedics, and he refused the offer of a hospital check-up.

others on provisional charges. The Chinese, from Fujian, are said to have operated prostitution and drug rackets from apartments in and around Barcelona.
Rajoy must testify in corruption trial SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has been ordered to testify in a corruption trial, but he has not been accused of any wrong-doing.
A large-scale investigation has taken place into alleged corrupt practices by numerous companies, suspected of bribing members of Rajoy’s PP party, in exchange for contracts. Thirty-seven defendants are charged with fixing public
tenders worth over 350m euros, including two former PP treasurers. It is believed that he holds valuable information that will help the case. The PP party said although it respects the court’s decision, it cannot agree with it.
TWO men have been arrested by police for fishing off the Santa Cruz coast in an unregistered boat, and with an illegal net.
Officers seized 8.4kg of smelt fish (gueldes), a protected species whose fishing is limited, along with the 50-metre fishing net. The men were also sanctioned for not having a fishing permit. The fish were delivered to the Department of Fishing for inspection.
Tots with brain disease
THREE children from Los Realejos, aged around two years, were admitted to hospital last week with symptoms of viral encephalitis (inflammation of the brain).
One child was discharged earlier this week, and the other two remain in hospital, with a good prognosis. The Canary Islands’ Ministry of Health specified that the cases were unrelated, because it had not been possible to determine a common link. One of the minors attends a Los Realejos nursery, and the staff have been informed of the hygiene procedures they should follow to prevent the virus spreading throughout the facilities.

Putin opponent runs out of luck
VASILI Popov, an opposition, political-party leader in Russia, who had been granted asylum in Finland, was arrested more than a week ago in Puerto de la Cruz … by chance!
There was no news to suggest he was in Tenerife, and his arrest occurred on 11th April during a routine control check. It was part of an operation against Romanian gangs, and, when his documentation was checked, it was flagged with an international claim for fraud in Russia. However, Popov’s wife told the Finnish press there wasn’t an open case against her husband, who is not politically active right now, and that he was on holiday here. Popov, politically opposed to Vladimir Putin, fled Russia in 2015 to Finland, where he was given
asylum last February. Initially, the La Orotava courts took charge of his case. But the National Courts have since taken it over since it is the relevant Spanish court for extraditions. And, if the process is the same as on other occasions, Popov will now be in Madrid. The Finland Government has taken an interest, says the media there, presumably to stop Popov’s extradition. His political party suffered
a serious setback in the last Russian elections, in which Putin’s party again secured a landslide victory. However, it is common knowledge that there is political repression in Russia, and it is suspected that political opponents have been murdered, on government orders. The death of public figures opposed to Putin has caused worldwide scandals, such as Boris Berezovski, found dead in his Berkshire home of Ascot in 2013.
Cyber-hackers rumbled after huge Europol hunt
A MAJOR Europol investigation into cyber-hacking has led to five arrests, three in Spain and two in the UK. The group were said to be developing and selling sophisticated tools to provide “invisibility” to all types of malicious malware. And potentially, it is believed, they were able to have infected thousands of computers around the world. Yet the tools would not have appeared suspicious to anti-virus programmes. That’s because activation of the remote-control Trojans, key-loggers and back doors would have allowed them to control
their victims’ computers. Europol was responsible for co-ordinating the complex probe between the Spanish National Police’s Technological Research Unit, the UK National Cybercrime Unit TITAN and the threat-investigation service of anti-virus firm Trend Micro. The tools were promoted on hacking forums in exchange for payments, usually in Bitcoins (digital “currency, which allows users to conduct transactions online). And fees were based on the number of infections actually achieved. According to investigators, the activity began in the middle of 2013, producing substantial, financial rewards to those responsible.

WhatsApp used for child-porn pictures
SPANISH Police have smashed a major, international network, distributing child pornography via messaging service WhatsApp to share the indecent images. The pioneering operation, leading to 90 arrests, was carried
out by the Technological Research Unit of the force, alongside Europol and Interpol. During the investigation, nearly 100 message chains and chat groups were discovered, created and used by people from 18 countries across Europe, Central America and South America, all with an exclusively-paedophile theme.
The Spanish Home Office says this was the first international action against child porn in the European Union, and was coordinated with the Action Group Against Cybercrime in The Hague. A total of 17 arrests were made in Spain, while others were made in European countries, as well as in Central and South America.
Brakes applied to car-theft trio
UNIPOL, the Local Police special branch, have arrested two women and a man, all with criminal records, for stealing valuables from cars parked at the Mirador, a popular Las Teresitas look-out point. Officers, who learned of numerous tourists’ rental cars being broken into there, were also given descriptions of the suspects. They set up a surveillance and succeeded in arresting the trio - the women, aged 40 and 33, and the 54-year-old man - with various stolen items, including: a credit card, cash from different countries, a mobile phone, a camera lens, and a wallet. The man also tried to hide the pair of scissors he was carrying.

Cats Welfare News
Live Arico News
A stressed cat is a sad cat Are you to blame? WHEN your cat is lounging in sunlight without a care in the world, it may be hard to believe he could sometimes be stressed. You might not recognise the condition when you see it, so here are some tips. How to tell If you ever have to search under beds or in the wardrobe for him, you may be seeing signs of stress. Other cats meow insistently, or avoid the litter tray and mess around the house. Even over-grooming can be a sign. Incidents that seem minor to you, like the loud monster known as the vacuum cleaner, a dirty litter tray or a barking dog can all stress your cat. How to help Provide him with a safe place; a box he can curl up in and a high spot, where he can survey everything that happens. When your cat is in his safe space, leave him alone unless he invites interaction. Reducing sensory stimuli can help. For instance, a large water bowl that does not touch his whiskers when he drinks can help. Some cats find the scent of lavender calming. If your cat doesn’t respond to any
of these simple changes around the home, or if he starts to show physical responses such as aggressive behaviour or stress-induced anorexia, medication can be prescribed by a vet. Avoid punishing your cat for any behaviours he shows. Instead, seek to alleviate his stress by calming his environment, and following
the tips shown here. Cat of the week: Nimaatra (she looks like an Egyptian Queen) has been found on the street, but she’s friendly and has an old flea collar, so she’s been someone’s pet. She’s now spayed, and is leukaemia and feline-aids negative. She’ll be vaccinated and given a microchip, and, as usual, all cats go on trial so you can be sure you have made the right decision. By Paul Montague at blevins Franks
IN January 2016, financial institutions in over 50 countries around the world began collecting information on their clients and their accounts.
21st April - 27th April 2017
Are you ready for exchange of information?
This data will be passed onto the clients’ countries of residence in 2017. Crossborder taxation can get complex for expatriates. It is important to make sure you are correctly declaring your income, and paying tax in the right country. This exchange of information will be repeated every year, with a further 47 countries starting to collect data in 2017, ready to exchange it in 2018. It is carried out under the Common Reporting Standard (CRS), developed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The loss of financial privacy affects us all. If we live in
one country and have assets in another, our information will be shared between countries. Our local tax authority will automatically receive information on the financial assets we own overseas, without asking for it. If you live in the Canary Isles and have, for example, investments in the Isle of Man, bank accounts in Switzerland or pension funds in the UK, the Spanish tax authorities will receive information on these assets. Information to be exchanged The information being shared includes personal data such as your name and address, country of tax residence and tax identification number. You have probably received requests from banks and financial institutions to confirm these details. The information to be reported about your accounts includes the
investment income you earned over the year (interest, dividends, income from certain insurance contracts, annuities etc.), account balances and gross proceeds from the sale of financial assets. The financial institutions that need to report include banks, custodians, certain investment entities such as investment funds, certain insurance companies, trusts and foundations. The 54 “early adopter” jurisdictions will make the first exchange by September 2017, in relation to 2016 data. This list includes Spain, the UK, most EU countries, the Channel Islands, Isle of Man and Gibraltar and UK offshore territories. The countries starting the following year include Switzerland, Monaco, Singapore, Hong Kong, Panama, Australia and Canada. What does this mean for you? When local tax offices
receive this information they will be able to verify whether the taxpayer has accurately reported their income on their tax returns and Modelo 720 declarations. Cross-border taxation is complex. If you spend time in more than one country it may be hard to determine where you should be paying tax. If you live in Canary Isles but have assets and receive income abroad, you need to know where you should be declaring them and where tax is due. You have to follow tax-residency rules and double-taxation treaties. Tax residents of Spain are liable to Spanish tax on their worldwide income, gains and wealth. This includes most income which is also taxed elsewhere. Some British expatriates believe that if income is taxable in the UK, like rental income, pensions and ISAs, they do not have to declare it in Spain. This is incorrect;
even if they are declared and taxed in the UK, you still need to declare them in Spain. Exchange of information does not mean that we do not have the right to structure our assets in the most tax-efficient way, but we have to ensure we only use arrangements which are compliant in Spain. There are structures which can be very effective, but take specialist advice to make sure you get it right. Tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices, which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; an individual is advised to seek personalised advice. Keep up to date on the financial issues that may affect you on the Blevins Franks news page at www. blevinsfranks.com
Taxman ready to reap record sum SPAIN’S tax authorities expect to claw back a record 200.9bn euros this year, which is 7.9% more than in 2016, and most of the increase will come from company profit taxes. According to Treasury Minister Cristóbal Montoro, a further 12.6% in commercial tax will be collected, which converts to a rise of just under 24.4bn euros. But this is still a long way off the amount collected in 2007, when companies paid 44.8bn in tax on their profits. However, the overall figure brings the Spanish Government to a tax-
income sum similar to that collected just before the financial crisis began in 2007, when it earned 200.7bn euros. These sums are net of taxpayer refunds in their annual declaration. In the
coming months, rebates corresponding with last year’s tax paid are expected to be in region of 12bn euros. Montoro admits the country has been through a “deep economic
crisis”, with five years of consecutive reductions in the GDP and 3.5 million jobs destroyed. This forced tax income down, but the Treasury Minister says that because the country’s economy is starting to recover, he has decided to increase taxes on firms. This will hit the majority of Spain’s companies fairly hard, given that over 70% are small or mediumsized firms, typically oneman bands or family-run affairs. Montoro has also mentioned that wages need to increase now that deflation has also been reversed. He believes staff should not now be paid salaries “consistent with those of a country on the edge of recession”. Inflation is at 1.5%, yet
Montoro has given his own civil servants a paltry 1% pay rise this year. Most of this year’s cash earned by the Government will be in income tax: just over 78bn, or 7.7% more than in 2016, and somewhat higher than 2007’s 72.6bn. Another 67.5bn euros will come from IVA (Value Added Tax in the UK), which is 7.3% more, and 20.7% higher than the 2007 sum collected, because top-rate IVA went up from 16% to 21% between 2010 and 2012, and the 7% middle band up to 10%, both in two stages. Montoro says this year’s budget is not aimed at cutting taxes. In fact, the income-tax drop over the past two years meant 9.3bn euros fewer for the government.

Friday 21st April, BBC1, 21.30
The show follows the lives of a collection of characters connected to the hospital in some way, all played by one man: Tom Binns.
Hospitals are mainly about the medical staff and the patients, but what about the other inhabitants? Porters, hospital-radio DJs, chaplains, hospital managers - you could call them ‘non-essential’ but they would all strongly disagree. Hospital People follows how the big decisions affect the little people. The key characters are Brimlington hospital’s inept DJ Ivan Brackenbury, its ambitious manger, Susan Mitchell, Hospital Porter and spirit medium Ian D Montfort and over-enthusiastic hospital chaplain Father Kenny Mercer. This mockumentary follows the lives of porters, hospital radio DJs, chaplains and managers. The series asks who exactly are all these people, and should any of them be remotely near a hospital? It’s the moment that hospital manager Susan Mitchell has been waiting for - she has won the bid for Brimlington to host the Annual Regional Hospital Awards. She has bagged a star host for the evening, Jeremy Lace, a veteran of long-running fictional hospital drama Good Medicine. Hospital chaplain Father Kenny and resident radio DJ Ivan vie for the Patients Choice Awards, while Ian is forced to face conventional medicine head on.

Springwatch In Japan: Cherry Blossom Time Friday 21st April, BBC2, 20.30
The Sakura (cherry blossom) spring is one of the world’s most stunning ‘natural’ wonders, as blankets of iconic pale pink flowers fleetingly transform Japan’s towns, cities and countryside. This Easter, presenters Chris Packham, Michaela Strachan and James Wong will join hundreds of thousands of other travellers visiting Japan to indulge in ‘Hanami’ - the national tradition of flower watching. As each follows their own Sakura stories, the trio will learn that the arrival of the blossom is not just a spectacle of nature - it has become one of Japan’s most important cultural moments, influencing the economy, tourism, and family tradition. The presenters will look back to the Sakura’s ancient origins and how the arrival of the blossom represented the fleeting beauty of nature and also human life. For Chris Packham, the Sakura will be a chance to explore the wildlife that lives in harmony with the blossom. The Japanese white-eye has been perfectly designed to enjoy the cherry blossom, and can be seen everywhere at this time of year. Chris goes in search of this tiny bird to explain just why it can live in such harmony with the Sakura. And, with Hanami parties in full swing, he’ll encounter the elusive nocturnal creatures living in the city suburbs. These are the raccoon dogs, or Tanuki, who come out to feed on the party scraps. For ethnobotanist James Wong the trip is a chance to look at the amazing phenomenon of the trees themselves. Here, he learns that the most popular Sakura is unable to fertilise future generations of trees - so all the blossom orchards are man-made. Travelling to Mount Yoshino, where 30,000 trees delight the annual visitors, James joins the group of dedicated Sakura gardeners who ensure the survival of the spectacle by planting new trees every year. And in Kyoto he meets one of the revered ‘Sakura’ doctors who dedicate their lives to keeping the trees healthy. Michaela Strachan’s journey starts in Tokyo, where she meets the blossom bees. Pesticides are banned in the city, so the bees have access to clean nectar sources - particularly the Sakura. With Hanami at the heart of the season, Michaela and Chris join revelers in one of Kyoto’s large parks to discover how different generations celebrate the Sakura, including the Japanese students celebrating the season in their own way. This BBC Two one-hour ‘as-live’ special will celebrate this spring blossom time, from the frenetic energy and consumerism of the city, to moments of tranquility and serene beauty in the spiritual mountains of Yoshino, as James Wong visits the ‘Pink Mountain’ - reputedly the best place in the world to see cherry blossom.

The majority will be aiming just to get round, some will also have personal best times to aim for, but the one sight everyone will want to see will be the finish in the Mall. The heartbeat of the London Marathon are the many thousands running for personal, sometimes heart-breaking reasons, with fundraising and raised awareness for those very causes their main aim. Over the morning and afternoon we will highlight some of those special people who all have amazing stories to tell. In the elite men’s race, Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele, who won last year’s Berlin Marathon in the second-quickest time ever, could be the one to beat - but he will face a tough field which includes Kenya’s Stanley Biwott, who finished second in 2016 and 2014. In the women’s race, Great Britain’s five-time Olympian Jo Pavey will have qualification for this year’s World Championships in her sights as part of a strong field. Olympic gold medallist and 2016 winner Jemima Sumgong of Kenya will aim to defend her title against high-quality runners, including Ethiopia’s World Champion Mare Dibaba. Six-time Paralympic gold medallist David Weir, who has said he will retire after the men’s elite wheelchair race, is going for a record seventh win after losing out last year in a sprint finish to German Marcel Hug, who is aiming for back-to-back titles. In the women’s wheelchair race, Tatyana McFadden of the USA seeks a record fifth-straight London crown. Joining Gabby along the way will be reporters Ore Oduba, Colin Jackson, Steve Brown and Jazmin Sawyers, while commentary comes from Steve Cram, Brendan Foster, Andrew Cotter, six-time London Marathon wheelchair race winner Baroness Tanni Grey Thompson and Paula Radcliffe, who set the women’s marathon world record 13 years ago in London.

Little Boy Blue
Monday 24th April, ITV1, 21.00
Based on a true story that shocked a nation, this powerful four-part factual drama, from BAFTA winning writer and executive producer Jeff Pope (Appropriate Adult, The Widower), centres on the devastating impact on a city of an innocent child’s murder amid a wave of gang violence. Little Boy Blue focuses on the murder of 11-year-old Rhys Jones in Croxteth, Liverpool, in 2007. It explores Melanie’s and Steve’s ordeal, and tells the story of how Rhys’s murderer and associates were eventually brought to justice. Melanie and Steve Jones support the making of this drama, which is based on careful research. Stephen Graham (Taboo, This is England) takes the role of Detective Superintendent Dave Kelly who led the investigation into Rhys’s murder on behalf of Merseyside Police, while Sinead Keenan (Being Human) and Brian F. O’Byrne (Million Dollar Baby, Prime Suspect) play Melanie and Steve Jones. Filmed on location in Liverpool and the North West, Little Boy Blue is produced by Kwadjo Dajan (Cilla, Mrs Biggs, Appropriate Adult) and directed by Paul Whittington (The Moorside, Cilla, The Widower, Mrs Biggs).

Anthony Joshua: The Road To Klitschko
Tues 25th April, BBC1, 22.45
Anthony Joshua versus Wladimir Klitschko, in front of 90,000 fans at Wembley Stadium on April 29, will be the biggest live event in the history of British boxing. For the past two years, the BBC has followed Anthony Joshua with unprecedented access to his dressing room, hotels, at home and in training before and after fights, starting with his clash against fellow Brit Dillian Whyte almost two years ago. The result of that access is Anthony Joshua: The Road To Klitschko; a remarkably intimate portrayal of a young fighter and his rise to the very pinnacle of boxing’s most prestigious division.

Horizon: ADHD And Me With Rory Bremner Tuesday 25th April, BBC2, 21.00
Comedian and Impressionist Rory Bremner is on a personal mission to uncover the science of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), a condition which he has suspected he has. In this film he learns about the science of ADHD, goes for a diagnosis, and tries the drug methylphenidate (also known as Ritalin) for the first time - just before walking on stage. Around three percent of the adult population suffer from ADHD, and five percent of children - yet many people remain sceptical of its existence, blaming it on naughty children or bad parenting. This film looks for the solid scientific evidence that ADHD does exist as a distinct disorder in the brain and the implications for those people suffering from it. In Rory’s case, he believes that the random associations it throws up feed his comedy. But for people with more severe ADHD, the consequences can be extremely serious. Incredibly, almost 30 percent of adult prisoners have ADHD; we meet someone who has consistently been in trouble with the law (Amy Sweet), whose potential career as an England hockey player was blighted by her impulsive behaviour. The programme also traces the biological origins of ADHD, and discovers that far from it being a modern disorder, doctors were describing its symptoms in 1775. From today’s research, we see the clear differences in the brains of people with ADHD, and discover how the genes involved are being identified by research on flies, which have been genetically modified to be hyperactive or inattentive. Rory comes to see that it’s a complicated condition, which is different in almost everyone who has it, due to the interaction of the many genes involved with the environment. Rory tries out treatments for ADHD, taking methylphenidate (notorious under the brand name Ritalin) for the first time, as well as trying out an experimental form of brain training. Finally he finds out why ADHD exists at all: while it may be bad for the individual, some scientists believe it may have helped society by providing risk-takers who, like mine-sweepers, identify dangers and map out boundaries, to the benefit of the rest of us.

The semi-finals of football’s oldest cup competition sees Premier League title favourites Chelsea take on London rivals Tottenham at Wembley. Antonio Conte’s Chelsea are aiming to do the league and cup double in the Italian’s first season in charge, and for a fifth FA Cup triumph in the last 10 years. Tottenham will be looking for revenge for a 5-1 semi-final defeat to Chelsea in 2012, as they bid to reach their first FA Cup final since 1991 when they went on to lift the trophy.

As a six-time champion, Steve is uniquely placed to explain the addictive nature of snooker’s greatest championship. Held over 17 days with three sessions a day and no rest days, it is nearly as long as the Tour de France, longer than an Olympic Games and any of the other big sporting events. Along the way Steve meets up with Dennis Taylor (who beat him in the famous black ball final, watched by a staggering 18 million people at one am in the morning); king of the Crucible Stephen Hendy, the seven-times winner; and always-thebridesmaid Jimmy White, who missed out in a record six finals.

The Durrells
Sunday 23rd April, ITV1, 20.00
Keeley Hawes reprises her role as Louisa Durrell as she and the rest of the cast of the The Durrells return for series two of the popular ITV series. The 6 x 60’ hour series is produced by Sid Gentle Films Ltd. In the new series Larry (Josh O’Connor) continues to pursue his passion for writing despite a new romance getting in the way; Leslie (Callum Woodhouse) decides to explore his entrepreneurial spirit; Margo (Daisy Waterstone) remains boy crazy and makes a play for someone thoroughly unsuitable; and Gerry (Milo Parker), who prefers animals to people, is delighted when he discovers an otter is living close to home. Daniel Lapaine joins the cast as Hugh Jarvis - an English gentleman who sets his sight on Louisa. But after her failed attempt at marrying Sven, will Louisa be ready for a new man in her life?

White, angular and perched atop zig-zagged stilts like the local fishermen’s houses, it pays homage to the European settlers that arrived from Ireland and Devon to fish cod - most islanders still have Irish or West Country accents. For years cod was the primary source of income, but overfishing saw stocks plummet, and a cod-fishing moratorium was put in place in the 1990s. The island’s population subsequently shrank, as families moved away in search of other work. Delving beyond the lobby, Giles and Monica meet founder Zita Cobb, the little girl who grew up to be a multi-millionaire and realise her dream to build a hotel that would revive her island home and its folklore. Her family has lovingly folded its rich heritage into a unique retreat for guests (and celebrities) from all over the world.

Driving licences in Spain
As easy as 123 By Carl pattison from Robot
WE have all seen the colour ads on the TV and in the press showing us that we can flip from one colour to the next at home, with no problems whatsoever. If only this were true, then clients wouldn’t need us to create colours or correct accidents. This is why we always state that colouring is an art, not something that can be erased easily with a shop-bought colour. Many of you love to
swap hair colours on a regular basis, flipping from this season’s favourites, back to your own - then back again. We, as stylists, not only need to advise you about the effects on your hair colour now, but also the effects and possible harm in the future. As of now, there’s no magical “haircolour eraser”, and any removing of colour, unless done properly, can cause great harm to the hair. As you can see, our client spent years colouring her hair poppy red. It looked good, but, when the need for a change came around, this wasn’t going to be achieved at home.
Her hair was stripped of the red, then a toner was applied to give it that soughtafter “steely” blonde. The condition was still intact after three hours of work, and she left, completely satisfied. There is no way that this sort of work can be carried out at home. Your stylist has trained for years, and knows exactly the method needed to create this stunning look, without harming the hair. Listen to your stylist’s colour advice before you take the plunge; we only have your best hair interests at heart.
Rufflemania!
By Carl Pattison IT’S as though we haven’t seen enough of the Eighties’ retrofashions when up pops another rework of a favourite of many, back in the days of New Romantics and Princess Diana… RUFFLES. Forget what you may remember from before, and take a new look at all that is frilled. This look, back in the early eighties, was such a craze that it went on for a fair few years. Everything from blouses to T-shirts, and even
trousers and skirts, went all ruffly and floaty. This season sees a revamp of this, in a more sophisticated, but toned-down, way. Off-the-shoulder, as predicted here a few months ago, takes on this fashion in the best way. Be careful not to overdo this on your top half, if you tend to be heavier in this area. Instead, add the ruffles to your bottom half to balance your frame. Skirt-wise, slimmer girls can add the frills around their
waists. For your take on this, opt for a crisp, white shirt with a pair of jeans; nothing looks more stylish. Keep your ruffles large and deep. Don’t go for smaller, because this can look too “country”. You want to look feminine, but edgy. Last, but not least, keep your look clean by using block colours on your ruffles, never patterns. At the moment, the stores are full with this look, so you have no excuses not to find your “frilled fashion”.

FOR those of us living permanently in Spain, we know the importance of having the correct paperwork, and for it all to be in order. Why then do so many foreigners, not just those from the UK, forget, or feel the need to “hang on to” their driving licences from their country of origin? Many do, but it’s not actually a choice you can make, because, if you are legally resident in Spain and hold a Certificado de Registro de Cuidadanos, you are obliged by Spanish Law to exchange your licence for a Spanish European one. And why not? The process is relatively straightforward and involves, primarily, getting your licence verified as being legitimate, confirming that the holder has not been disqualified. And, of course, there is the points situation, and any medical restrictions which may be in place. These include the use of glasses, or restricted hours of driving (for instance, night driving not permitted). Sometimes, people do not adhere to this because they are scared of the medical they might have to undertake. There is
no need to be because the medical is pretty straight-forward, and is carried out in a special centre known as Centro de Reconocimiento Medico. During the test, you are asked about any medication you might be taking, or whether you are shortsighted. There is also a hearing test, and you spend a few minutes on a simulator, similar to a playstation, where you are controlling the “car” on screen with two handles, driving along a road. You will no doubt “hit” the road and think, “Oh, that’s me failed.” But it’s not about keeping within the lines so much, as to how quickly you rectify the error with your reactions. The tester will also take your photograph, which will be included in the certificate you receive, and which has to be presented to Trafico in Santa Cruz at the time of the exchange, and not at the start of the process! The certificates last for just three months, so it is not advisable to do this test until you have been advised that Trafico has received the verification. You cannot obtain a certificate of entitlement yourself
and present that at Trafico to speed up process which is sometimes lengthy. That’s because Trafico MUST receive the verification directly from the Driver Licensing Department in the country of origin. The initial presentation at Trafico is of photo copies of your documents. No photograph or medical is needed at this point. But once verification is received, you will be advised and have three months in which to complete the process. I suggest that, once received, you proceed as quickly as possible because people often forget how quickly the three months can pass. If you leave it any longer, you will be fined if stopped by the police. At the time of the actual exchange, you will have to surrender your original driver’s licence and will receive a temporary Spanish version, valid for driving in Spain only, because the original will be sent to you directly through the normal postal system. It is, therefore, vitally important that when completing the exchange, you provide the correct and full postal address. If you cannot receive post for whatever reason, you can ask for the licence to be sent to your place of work, or to the Trafico Office, for collection. But be aware that if you intend to travel outside of Spain during the temporary-licence period, you would have to get an International Licence. For example, if you were visiting the UK and hiring a car, the latter would be required. If you need any further information, or assistance in exchanging your licence, please contact emma@motor worldtenerife.com.

Water difference it makes to your life! By Val Sainsbury WE all know that the human body is primarily made up of water, and that we need to consume a certain amount to survive.
The muscles and kidneys are composed of 73% water; blood 83%; lungs 90% and the brain 76%. We lose water via urine, breath and sweat, so replenishment is crucial. Signs you’re not drinking enough: Your urine is dark yellow This is often the first sign you’re not drinking enough water. Generally, urine should be a light, yellowamber colour. Your urine output is reduced Most people urinate between 6-7 times within a 24-hour period. When you don’t drink enough water, there is less fluid available to replace the fluids being excreted from the body. If you urinate less than six times a day, consider your water intake and increase if necessary. Constipation Dehydration is one of the most common causes of constipation, but this can often be resolved by increasing water intake. If you are not fully hydrated, your body will try to absorb water from wherever it can, including your colon. A sufficient amount of water in the large intestine is crucial for soft, easy-to-pass stools. Naturally, a lack of water will lead to harder stools that are difficult to pass. To prevent or treat constipation, ensure you are consuming adequate
amounts of water, in addition to increased fibre found in fruit and vegetables. Your skin is dry Most women rely on expensive moisturisers to keep their body soft and smooth. Dehydration can lead to irritated, inflamed, itching and sensitive skin. In severe cases, skin can flake and scale or become severely red with cracks which bleed. Hunger and losing weight The body is intrinsically smart, but it doesn’t know the difference between hunger and thirst. Reaching for a snack instead of a glass of water leads to excess caloric intake and weight gain. If you’re trying to lose or maintain your weight, make sure you are consuming adequate amounts of water. If you feel hungry, grab a
glass of water before going for a snack, and wait 1015 minutes to see if the hunger has passed or if it’s still present. If you are still feeling hungry, then it is true hunger, and time for you to eat. Thirst and dry mouth Believe it or not, feeling thirsty is a sign that you are already slightly dehydrated. A dry mouth often occurs with thirst, and signifies that the mucus membranes in the body need hydration. The only way to resolve thirst and a dry mouth is to drink water throughout the day. Headaches When you don’t drink enough water, your body will attempt to preserve and reabsorb water from all of your tissues to compensate for the lack of fluid intake. Subsequently,
your brain tissue loses some of its moisture and shrinks, pulling away from the skull. Pain receptors are triggered resulting in a headache. Simultaneously, when you don’t drink enough water, blood volume drops, reducing the amount of oxygen being carried to the brain. Blood vessels in the brain dilate in response, leading to swelling and inflammation, intensifying the headache. Fatigue Mild dehydration can cause fatigue, tiredness and low energy. When you’re dehydrated and the blood volume decreases, the heart has to work harder to push oxygen and nutrients through the body. Next time you start to feel tired, skip the coffee (which is dehydrating!) and drink a glass of water instead. Coffee, tea, soda and sports drinks are not substitutes for water. Joint pain Water acts as a lubricant to the joints, allowing two bones to slide over each other as the joint moves. When the body doesn’t receive enough water, the joint becomes nutrient deficient, leading to damage of the cartilage cells. If you suffer from joint pain, be mindful of your water intake and increase if necessary. You’re not sick... you’re thirsty! Many people believe that all liquids provide hydration, but not all fluids are hydrating! Some beverages, such as coffee, soft drinks and juice can actually dehydrate the body because of their caffeine and sugar content. Small changes make big differences to your health. Keep a glass of water or a bottle with you at all times.
Wine in Spain flowing again
SPAIN’S wine consumption last year increased for the first time in decades, from between 2.5% and 4%, to hit 9.8 million hectolitres (one hectolitre equals 100 litres). But the figures, provided by the Spanish Wine Market Observatory (OEMV), are still way below the country’s average production of around 42m hectolitres, which leaves Spain at the bottom of the rankings for wine consumption among producer counties. In the Seventies, the average annual wine consumption was above 40 litres per head. But this dropped off dramatically to just 21 litres per head in 2014. Rafael del Reym, OEMV director, said the rise could be down to Spain’s improving economic situation, together with a more mature and competitive industry. The wine sector in Spain now plans to launch a strategy, aimed at attracting younger generations of drinkers. The Vatican has the highest wine consumption in the world, according to the Wine Institute, at 53.83 litres per head per year. Croatia and Slovenia share second place (44 litres), followed by France (42.5), Portugal (41.7) and Italy (33). But the average figure in the UK is just 22 litres.

Rubber-stamped: No going back on the Floor Clause By mariano zunino siri
Registered lawyer at the tenerife bar association
IN my last column, on 7th April, I referred to the Non-Retroactivity of the floor clause, according to the Spanish Supreme Court’s judgement of 4th April 2017. The Court dismissed an appeal and stated that it would not review the abusive Floor Clause ruled before the judgement of the European Court recognising the total retro-activity of the nullity of the floor clauses. According to the European Court of Justice judgement, dated December 2016, those affected by the Floor Clauses could receive all of what was unduly collected, and not only from May 2013 onwards but from the date the credit was granted. In legal terms, when a resolution cannot be appealed and is known as final resolution (or final judgement), it is said that the judgement is “res judicata”. In my column, I suggested an idea to jump over the “res judicata” matter, which is the action of unjust or enrichment or “lack of cause enrichment” which pretends to restore the balance altered by displacement without justification. Searching for information to strengthen my idea, I found a judgement of the High Court of Pontevedra of
January 2017, rejecting the possibility to apply res judicata to a lawsuit presented by one claimant affected by a Floor Clause. The bank, following the judgement of the Supreme Court of 9th May 2013, had deleted the Floor Clause and paid the client the amounts charged irregularly, plus interests. But only from the aforementioned date (9th May 2013). The client, unhappy with this solution, asked for the full amount. That is, the monies charged irregularly from the date of the loan. The Court rejected the petition of the bank’s client and ruled in favour of the bank, applying the decision of the Supreme Court of 9th May 2013 (now rectified by the European Court). The claimant appealed the judgement. The
High Court suspended the proceeding of this appeal until the European Court decision about the retro-activity of the Floor Clause. The European Court finally decided that the Floor Clauses are null and void with full retroactivity (judgement of 21st December 2016). The Pontevedra High Court has now recognised the right of the plaintiff to recover all his monies, including those charged irregularly before May 2013; thus revoking the decision of the Court, which had limited the effects of the retro-ac-
tivity up to May 2013. At this stage, the bank had refunded just 256 euros. The High Court concluded that we are not in a case of res judicata because the declaration of nullity cannot be extended to all the cases (erga omnes), but in respect of some clauses used by the banks. If the bank considered that the clause was affected by the declaration of nullity and decided to give up its application, this attitude is right and legal. But it is NOT connected to the “res judicata” institute!

Home comforts
By LilI Meyrick at Muebles Chic
EACH year, hundreds of expats flood in from the UK to invest in a holiday home, here in Tenerife.
However, a second home in the sun couldn´t be more different from your typically-British home that one is used to, but the old saying still stands: “An Englishman’s home is his castle”, when it comes to making your place homely and comfortable. What I have noticed, over the years, is that second-home owners like to take the opportunity to have a little fun with their
décor, and go for the opposite to what they have at home. Adding bright, bold colours, for example, is something they would easily tire of if they were seeing them all year round. All this makes perfect sense, but my advice is to keep it simple! It is easy to go over the top with an accent on colours or a particular theme, and the décor can become too busy and overpowering. Keeping it simple (especially for small apartments) can be the key to achieving the look you’re searching for in a second home in the sun. Firstly, rather than decorating each room separately with different colour palettes and styles, my advice is to stay consistent throughout, allowing each space to flow into one another. This gives you a great starting point, and a blank canvas on which you can then add
as much or as little as you feel the need to, without finding yourself going too far. Other than the décor itself, there are a few, essential household items that I would also advise to take care with when buying. The first two are the obvious ones - the sofa and mattress! Without a
Cost of homes will increase this year
PROPERTY prices across Spain are set to rise by 2.5% this year, according to the BBVA bank’s experts. Their predictions point to conditions
still being favourable for moderate growth in the country. A record decrease in unemployment across the country last month should also give the market a boost on its road to recovery. Overall, the number of sales is expected
to increase by 7% to almost 500,000. The continuing low level of mortgage interest rates will also favour strong demand, and that should maintain upward pressure on the price of housing, per square metre.
good night’s sleep and a comfy sofa to lounge on, it doesn’t matter how good your place looks! Next in importance is how to dress your windows and patio doors. It’s worth seeking expert advice on these, whether they be curtains or blinds. Whatever you choose to use, don’t make your decision just from a decorative point of view. They can be essential to protect your home from the sun, especially when it’s not being used for any period of time. Remember, the sun is strong, and, even if you don’t get direct sunlight, it is amazing how quickly things can deteriorate without protection. Lastly, exterior furniture; however beauti-

Tenerife tourism’s blossoming again Tenmás cards for ‘a new way of life’
NEARLY 1.9 million passengers arrived in Tenerife during the first quarter of the year, which was a 4.7% growth against the same period last year. The figure indicates that the island received the most tourists in the Canaries in the first three months of 2017, followed by Gran Canaria (1.6m, +17%); Lanzarote (818,782,
+8,8 %) and Fuerteventura (675.597, +2,9 %). Tenerife Cabildo President Carlos Alonso appreciates the positive influx of international arrivals, despite the effect of Easter Week, which last year was in March and this year April. “We have managed to stay in positive figures in virtually all international markets, with more than 10.3m airline seats on offer to the Island, representing a 9% increase in airline tickets for Tenerife South
and 1% for Tenerife North, and a total of 228 routes, said Alonso. Arrivals in the first quarter showed that those from the UK were up by 8.2%, Germany (+0.6%), Nordic countries (+3.8%); France (+21.8%), the Netherlands (+15.7%), Italy (+11%), Switzerland (+14.5%), Belgium and Poland (+9.4%). The following countries registered fewer numbers: Ireland (-2%), Austria (-5.1%) and Czech Republic (-7.9%).
THE Titsa Bono bus card will be replaced by a multi-purpose Tenmás card from next January, to make things easier for travellers. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, explaining the reason for changing the popular Bono, said: “This is the first step towards a new payment system, which is intended to simplify the current system. It will become a new way of life. “It has been designed to work like a citizen card for payment, or access to different services managed by the Cabildo, such as museums, sports centres, libraries, etc.” The name Tenmás
(Tenmore), lists the advantages and better access conditions for travellers, enabling them to get all over the island with a single card, offering faster access to the bus or tram, and the facility to top-up the card online, as well as at the usual sale points. It can be registered in the owner’s name, which will give individuals access to discounts, allow them to check and top-up the balance, or recover it in case the card is lost. Volunteers will test the new system between May and September to assess and correct any issues before next year’s launch. The Tenmás version will cost the same as the Bono bus cards: 15 and 25 euros, plus any top-ups.

Sporting Treehouse roar on T R E E H OUS E , unbeaten so far, hosted Palms 1 on Tuesday and it was nip-and-tuck early on, with both teams playing good pool.
After the first frames it was 2-2, and Jay then got the better of Graeme, only for Wayne to level it up again. But Scott beat Barry to make it 4-3 and ensure the five points for Treehouse. Mark then beat Wayne to leave Palms empty-handed after the singles. The team game also went the way of Treehouse, who won in just seven visits, with breaks of 19, 15 and 9 from Scott. Although Jay failed to score any points, his safety play was crucial to the victory … so another 10 points for undefeated Treehouse. The Hammers entertained Exiles, with both teams evenly matched. Exiles bought five players, and the B team’s Geoff, who joined them, made an excellent contribution throughout the evening. Hammers got to four first, and the final frame was between Barry and Blair. Barry took the frame to stop Exiles from getting any points from the singles, so
5-3 to the Hammers. Again, Hammers threw away a 13-point lead late in the team game. Steady pointscoring from Exiles, plus a couple of excellent pots from Stash, saw them edge out the team game 55-49, with the teams
sharing the points. Phoenix Potters, who travelled to the Terrace Bar in search of their first points in the new Summer League, got off to a good start, when Gary beat Paul. They lost the next two frames, but Dave levelled
the match at 2-2. Gary lost the next, so 2-3, and would the bad luck continue? The Phoenix dug in, and wins from Pod and Geoff gave them a 4-3 advantage. Geoff told Elvis Dave: “It’s Now Or Never”. But, sadly, he was left “All Shook Up” after losing the last frame to Greer, who won both his singles. So honours even at 4-4, and five points each. The team game was really close, with no high breaks. But Phoenix edged out Terrace 55-43 to get off the mark with all 10 points. Well done to both teams for what looked like a great night of pool. Dreamers are off to a flying start in the Summer League, scoring maximum points so far. This week they hosted
Palms 2, who were sitting top of the league thanks to the handicap system. Dreamers went 3-1 up after the first four frames, but after a spirited fight by Palms 2, they were only 4-3 up going into the last frame. Yet Mark beat Mark and Dreamers ran out 5-3 winners to pick up five points. The team game saw Dreamers score consistently, including a whopping 23 from Tommy, and Palms 2 never got going. They had amassed just 23 points when Dreamers Mark knocked in the last ball to give them the win and another five points. Gaffers, still smarting from their unexpected mauling last week, courtesy of Dreamers, hosted Bluebell. Gaffers, currently bottom of the league because of the handicap system, desperately needed a win to start climbing the table. Bluebell were just as anxious to get going because they hadn’t taken any points from the first two weeks. Lightning doesn’t generally strike twice in the same place, and this proved the case. Gaffers won the singles 6-2, taking five points, and in the team game, they crossed the line 55-27 to collect all 10 points and leave Bluebell still stranded.

Pearly Grey’s charity golf tournament tees-off again THE eighth annual Ingane Yami Golf Tournament, organised and hosted by Pearly Grey Ocean Club, will be staged in Tenerife on Saturday, 3rd June. And, for the fifth consecutive year, it takes place at Costa Adeje Golf Course. This popular, fund-raising competition is organised by the staff of Pearly Grey, with the help of resident golfer Steve Moore.
The Club’s aim is to provide a memorable, enjoyable day for the golfers, and to raise funds for Ingane Yami Children’s Village. The event is firmly established on the Tenerife golfing calendar now, and the Club will again welcome players from Tenerife, the UK and South Africa. Information about the golf day will be available on Oasis Fm radio, and published in Canarian Weekly, during the weeks leading up to the tournament. Sponsorship packages are
available, and, for any information, email golf@pearlygrey.com or telephone 922 743 903. Ingane Yami is a non-profit organisation, aimed at providing a stable, family environment for orphaned children in KwaZulu Natal province, South Africa. Pearly Grey Ocean Club has been an active partner with the charity since 2009, and has so far raised more than 150,000 euros. In January, Pearly Grey’s management team travelled to South Africa to visit the
village, meeting the children and the volunteers working there. And, following Pearly Grey’s close association with the village, it was an emotional and rewarding experience for them to see, first-hand, how the money the Club has raised is being used. Showtime’s show-stopper! THE annual end-ofseason extravaganza, known as our darts league presentation night, took place last Friday, in front of a receptive crowd of around 200 darts league members. They fully enjoyed a superb evening in Las Americas, at the Showtime venue, which included the charitydarts finals, known as the Memorial Trophy. There was also wonderful entertainment by the Sound of Musicals cast, some scrumptious food and a few shandies … just a few, honestly! The night kicked off with the Ladies’ Final, with Kim, of Naughty Nautas, led to the stage by walk-on man Terry Ellens, and Palms Pool Bar’s Nora, who employed the services of a bagpiper to accompany her. That set the tone for the evening, which is really good fun, always, although it didn’t seem to help the two contestants, who played out a rather nervous match, won 2 legs to nil by Kim. During a break in the darts action, we were fed handsomely, and entertained brilliantly with a 45-minute taster of the resident Showtime act, The Sound Of Musicals, which included mesmerising dancing and singing from the multi-talented cast. So mesmerising, in fact, that one Phoenix Bar player
actually had his chin hitting the floor! If you haven’t seen this show, you really must. Top-class entertainment! Moving on to the Division 2 final, Bar 180’s Wayne took on Picassos’ Per and soon stamped his mark by firing in a 180 and taking a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five match. Per managed to pull a leg back, but Wayne was too strong, claiming the night’s second trophy. The much-anticipated Division 1 final between Scruffy Macs’ Tom, and Phoenix Bar’s Mitch was next up. And, with both players having won the event before, an exciting final was expected. With the bookies having both players at 4/5, it seemed to be anyone’s match. But Tom had gone the whole league campaign unbeaten, and he
used that form to dispatch Mitch with a comfortable 4-0 scoreline! On to the main event of the evening, and the presentation of more than 40 trophies to the teams and individuals who had been successful over the last 48 weeks, some of whom were by now, in what you might call, party mood! Congratulations to everyone. We rounded off a fantastic fiesta of darts and merriment with a raffle draw, which included more alcohol … and, shall we say, some interesting prizes for folks to take home. Proceeds from the raffle, combined with Memorial Trophy entry fees, always go to our chosen charity, which was again the muchappreciated Cancer Bus. Representatives of this very worthy cause attended the evening and gave a short speech, thanking everyone for their generosity. The total raised, which included some personal donations, beat last year’s total with an amazing 2,290 euros, for which we thank you all. It will make a big difference to someone’s life. That’s it for another season and darts league presentation night, and all that remains is to thank our sponsors, Oasis Fm, Canarian Weekly and Chris Elkington. You done us proud, again! Coming back down to earth, the League’s AGM for season 2017-18 is on Sunday, 30th April.

BUZANADA and UD Ibarra are making the Copa Heliodoro Final an all-Arona affair on Wednesday (26th April) at 8.30pm. The Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez stadium has staged the big final since 1949, and it’s a wonderful achievement for two teams from the Canarian group of
the Tercera Division to get to play on CD Tenerife´s pitch in the 23,000-capacity stadium. Tickets, just 10 euros for adults and three euros for under-12s, will be on sale on the night, or you can buy them from the two clubs involved. Both teams will be arranging supporters’ coaches, so, if you want to go, contact either club and cheer them on.
YOU are all invited to join the party as the Arona Tenerife Sur team celebrate promotion to Spain’s Superliga. Their final game of the season brings Covadonga, from Asturias, to the Los Cristianos sports hall, by the outdoor swimming pool, tomorrow (Saturday). It’s a 7pm start and entry is free. It was a proud day for coach Gabriel Navarro and his
team last weekend, playing at Chamberi Madrid. And, having lost just one of their play-off games, they turned on the style with a
3-2 set victory. The scores went 22-25, 25-18, 26-24, and ended with two easy 14-25, 14-26 set wins. It is a huge achievement for the team, who will now compete with Spain’s top sides next season. Women’s volleyball is back on the map for South Tenerife, so do try to catch Arona’s last game in the lower level and enjoy this fast, exciting sport.

CD Tenerife
Gorging on a feast By Colin Kirby
SPOILT rotten, that’s what we were. Third-placed Tenerife against secondplaced Girona was expected to be a good game … but it just wouldn’t stop giving! Six goals split evenly, penalties given, denied and skied, and thrills all the way to the end. This match had it all! The bumper 19,395 crowd were purring all the way to the pub. True, two home points were dropped, but Tenerife are still third with just eight games left in the runup to the promotion playoffs. Girona looked a good side, tight and well-drilled. And not so much a flashy team as a hard-working unit, with plenty of danger-men. Sandaza was a pest, testing Dani Hernandez early on and kept in check on another raid by Jorge, who stuck to him like glue. And Suso, relishing his starting role, used all his experience to try to shake off the Girona markers.
CD Tenerife 3 Girona 3
When the opening goal came after 37 minutes, it was a strange one. Sandaza looked to be shackled at the post by Jorge and Carlos Ruiz, but, somehow, he managed to squeeze the ball in-off Ruiz. That wasn’t in the script, and there was another blow to come. It should have been a routine save for Dani Hernandez from Alcala, but the keeper was late getting to the ball as it sneaked across the line. Tenerife’s Vitolo was
straight back on the attack, and Alcala took his legs, the ref awarding a penalty lifeline which was converted by Suso. So, the home side 2-1 down after a breathless end to the half, and it was clear this was going to be a classic. Choco Lozano came on for Vitolo for the restart and that helped Amath, who dropped deep to make his speedy runs into danger areas. How about some more penalty fun to crank up
the tension? Suso was the victim. He went down, the ref blew up and Aaron stepped up to the spot. He is known for creating something out of nothing, and on this occasion, he created nothing out of something, ballooning the ball high over the bar with a schoolboy error. There could have been another spot-kick a few minutes later. Amath had his ankles clipped, and, on another day, it may well have been given. But
perhaps the ref thought he had filled his quota. This season, anything has been possible; cue Alberto with a thunderbolt of a shot from way outside the goal. What a way to equalise for 2-2! The stadium was a cauldron of noise and colour by now, and on came Gaku Shibasaki. He’s looking better by the week as he gains playing time and confidence. Starting on the right wing before swapping to the left, he showed his pace and vision. An inside pass to Choco was laid into the path of Amath, who promptly smashed the ball into the back of the net. But Girona still had a bit left in the tank, and Alcaraz struck just three minutes later to level this humdinger of a match at 3-3. Few people in the huge crowd begrudged Girona, because they are good value for their inevitable, fast-track promotion. For Tenerife, there’s still work to do, and successive away games will be tough, starting with Sunday’s 11am kick-off at Numancia.
Ladies’ Football
It’s a four-goal party C E L E B R A T I ON was in the air at El Medano, as Granadilla buried Athletic Bilbao with a four-goal salvo to ensure a top-eight league finish … and entry to the Copa del Reina at the end of May. The teams will contest the Queen’s Cup over two days in Madrid. And, on current form, the Tenerife ladies will fancy their chances of springing a surprise. Bilbao, a big, physical team, offered stern resistance at first, concentrating on closing down Granadilla. But the hosts adapted and started to play a neat, passing game, which had Bilbao chasing shadows. Ayano Dozono spotted a good opening, and sprayed a long ball out to Ana Gonzalez, who went close with a shot. The breakthrough came after

14 minutes; Granadilla swarmed forward and Sara Tui was well-positioned at the near post to head the ball home. Five minutes later, Virgy Garcia took the ball wide and lobbed it over the Bilbao keeper to make it 2-0. Bilbao tried to fight back, but their finishing was poor. Nekane missed an easy chance, and strayed into an
offside position for her next attempt. A leg injury to Sara Tui disrupted the home flow, but she was soon back in action after some touchline treatment. Maria Estella should have done better after winning the ball from her opponent, but her run at goal fizzled out to leave it 2-0 at the break.
Bilbao’s Nekane continued to spurn chances after the restart. She got into a good position but failed to control the ball, which went out of play. In the home goal, Noelia Gil had few dangers to face, but she reacted well to deny a fierce shot, followed by a rebound that missed the target. It was time for Granadilla to impose themselves again. Virgy forced a free-kick and nearly caught the Bilbao keeper napping, while Ana Gonzalez showed off her play-making skills, picking up the ball on the left. She turned a defender and got the ball across to Ayano Dozono, who finished smartly to stretch the lead. And Bilbao were in danger of being swamped as Virgy added her second goal. She beat a defender and tucked the ball under the diving keeper, before
departing a few minutes later to grateful applause from the 700-strong crowd. Granadilla used the remainder of the game to give playing time to the subs, which enabled Bilbao to make a better showing. But they still didn’t have enough creativity to worry Granadilla. A deep, late cross found Nekane with a golden chance to get the visitors something from the game. But Noelia Gil was too smart for her and won the ball. There are still more league games to come before the Cup, and buoyant Granadilla will be looking to improve on their sixth place. Meanwhile, at the bottom of Spain’s Premier League, La Laguna’s Tacuense endured another mauling, this time 8-1 at Real Sociedad. Sadly, their first season at the top level is now hanging by a thread.

National Badminton Championships for seniors set for Adeje THE Spanish Senior Badminton Championships, to be hosted by Adeje from Saturday 29th April to Monday, 1st May is expected to attract over 200 athletes from 26 clubs. The age-range for seniors is 30-75 years, and there’s free entry to the Las Torres pavilion venue.
At a press conference to announce details of the event, the Adeje Sports Councillor Adolfo Alonso, announcing details alongside Canarian Badminton Federation President Pedro Alonso Hernández, said: “This is the first time the Canary Islands are hosting a championship at this level in the sport.” Ten of the sport’s top names have already confirmed their presence, and Cllr Alonso added: “Adeje’s
commitment to sport, and sportsmen and women, is a fundamental part of our annual scheduling.” He stressed that the local Council didn’t simply cater for local athletes, but also worked to introduce national and international tournaments and sporting individuals to the borough, to encourage those from Adeje in their chosen sports. Canarian Federation President Hernández thanked the Council for its support, saying that Adeje had been chosen, among other reasons, because of the high standard of installations, excellent hotel offers near to
the sports grounds, and the climate! Also present were Federation Secretary Angel Castillo, and a representative from the Tenerife Association of Parents of Children with Autism, (Apanate), which will benefit from a series of solidarity activities during the tournament, such as the sale of commemorative T-shirts. Future sports events in Adeje include the Asphalt Spanish Rally championship circuit, the final four in the European basketball wheelchair league and the European Championships in this discipline as well.
CD Marino
Marino at crossroads! CD Marino 1 CD Tenerife B 3
MARINO, starting with a change of ground and finishing with a change of keeper, were unable to reverse their recent form.
With athletes warming-up on the track at the main Las Americas stadium, a bigger-than-usual crowd of 300 gathered at the smaller Anexo stadium over the road. Both sides found plenty of room to express themselves on the artificial pitch, and Tenerife made good use of wingers Nadhib and Marwan, the latter having a hard-fought contest with his marker, Brad Mills, throughout. Nadhib found Torres, who wasted a good early chance, and Coly created an opening for Adan to pick up on the left. But his finish wasn’t enough to beat Angel Galvan in the away goal. Keeper Cicovic looked
strong for Marino, smothering a Brian Martin effort and providing a safe pair of hands for Saavedra’s defensive header. Marino took the lead with Lolo’s curling shot, but it seemed to fire Tenerife into action. Saavedra came to the rescue again with a well-timed tackle on Brian Martin, but captain Gopar made himself some space to fire a goal to level the scores.
Marino put the pressure on at the start of the second half, Adan and Lolo both going close. But it proved a blow for the home side when they lost Coly with an ankle injury. And, while facing a free-kick and still reorganising, Brian Martin stole in for the visitors’ second goal. The game was drifting away from Marino, who tried to rescue a draw at the end by pushing keeper Cicovic up for an attack. But the move backfired as Tenerife broke, and the retreating keeper fouled Cristian to stop a certain goal, but gained a certain red card. On came replacement Petar with only seconds left. He kept out a shot from Giovanni with his first touch, but big sub Denzell came powering through, avoiding the keeper’s dive (and the team’s possible second sending-off) to hit the third goal and clinch the points.

Hoop heroes can’t wait
AFTER a week off from league action, Iberostar Tenerife were caught cold at Unicaja Malaga on Wednesday night, losing 88-67. But they are still chomping at the bit for the Final Four of the European Champions League at their La Laguna stadium next weekend. In Malaga, an 18-18 firstquarter draw was as good as it got because the remaining scores, 26-16, 21-12 and 23-21, left them with a rare heavy defeat. Ferran Bassas led the resistance on 12 points, and Nico Richotti added 10, but it was a poor night for most of the players. Next Friday (28th April) features the two Euro
semi-finals: Banvit (Turkey) v Monaco at 5pm, then Tenerife’s exciting clash against Venice at 8pm. International media coverage will add to the full-house matches, and Prince Albert of Monaco, a keen basketball fan, is expected over to support his home side. The grand final takes place on Sunday (30th April) at 7.15 pm. Tenerife fear no one after a stunning series of group and quarter-final wins. Even though last weekend was a time to relax, other league games played meant that Tenerife were guaranteed a top-eight position at least. It means they will compete in the end-of-season playoff event in May. They might even have to invest in a new trophy cabinet!
Junior Basketball
Canarian battlers hammer big boys
THE Canary Islands’ junior team, ranked underdogs at the start of the tournament, were crowned champions of Spain in their category, after a stunning 79-57 victory against Andalusia in Cadiz. It was a resounding success for a team
who grew stronger and stronger in character, the deeper they went into the tournament. Coach Eduardo Trujillo said: “After beating Madrid, we realised we could do this. A key to our success was the boys’ fantastic willingness to work.”
