Medical claims could affect All-Inclusive holiday hotels
28th April - 4th May 2017
HOTELS in Spain, including some in the Canaries, could finish their attractive, All-Inclusive holidays, for Brits only, because there are too many “fraudulent sickness claims, says a company of Madrid-based lawyers. Continued on Page 3

Would-be cheats warned Continued from Front Rogers & Co lawyer David Diez Ramos told Travel Weekly: “Sooner or later, Spanish hotels will increase the price, or stop selling AllInclusive deals to Britons.” Mr Ramos said his law firm received “zero” claims from other nationalities, and that all the sickness claims came from Britons, some of whom have, allegedly, been encouraged to tell lies about the standard of holiday-hotels’ food, which affects their health. But Britain’s Foreign Office has already updated its travel advice to Spain on its website, advising would-be cheats to tread carefully. “There have been reports of an increase in holiday-
Egyptian who gave terrorists a helping hand to Spain
POLICE have arrested an Egyptian on the Costa Blanca, suspected of being a terrorist sympathiser and said to be helping jihadist fighters return to Spain from the Middle East. The 46-year-old was also said to have spread Islamic State “hate” propaganda, by taking advantage of his “privileged position” within the Islamic community in the Alicante province. National Police said he was organising the return of IS terrorists wanting to leave Syria and Iraq. His main task, said officers, was to arrange for their return from the Middle-East conflict by supplying travel documents, cash and safe houses. Spain’s Ministry of Interior has continually stressed that the return of jihadist fighters to Europe is one of the main threats to national security. Since June 2015, when Spain’s security was raised to Level Four, just below the top, security forces have arrested 159 IS suspects.
makers being encouraged to submit a claim for personal injury if they have experienced gastric illness during their stay,” it says. “You should only consider pursuing a complaint or claim if you have genuinely suffered from injury or illness.” And the FO warns: “If you make a false or fraudulent claim, you may face legal proceedings in the UK or Spain.” But Mr Ramos, and his law firm, which acts on behalf of the insurance industry, believes hotels may increase the price of these traditional, low-cost holidays, which are loved by Brit families especially, because they can save so
much money. He believes the hotels could even drop the All Inclusive holiday packages completely after suggestions that they have been “held hostage” by UK tourists. Mr Ramos adds: “Those British citizens who are persuaded to claim are paying less than £1,000 for a two-week, All-Inclusive holiday. “Yet they are each receiving £2,000 to £3,000 for a claim, and you can add £5,000 in lawyers’ fees, which could see hoteliers move from this sort of holiday.” But Mr Ramos hasn’t quite got his facts sorted out. AllInclusive deals generally include lengthy contracts
with tour operators, who would not hesitate to move on to other hotel chains if their current hotels backed out … even if they were able to! Also, all the big holiday hotels must surely have the correct, commercial insurance to cover losses, even though their annual premium, and the excess, would almost certainly increase if the sickness claims pursued. The lawyer says: “Ten claims of this kind each month would hit hoteliers’ profits. They have to transfer the risk to the consumer, or hotels might be forced to break away from the AllInclusive scene.” Mr Ramos said one Benidorm hotel had
already stopped selling AllInclusive holidays to Brits because of the increase in these fake, gastric-illness claims. And it is understood that some hotels in the Canaries are already taking All-Inclusive holidays off the market for Brits, and offering half-board instead. The issue first arose last summer, after reports of an increase in certain companies targeting the British in Spanish resorts. Their representatives could be seen, hovering outside, ready to pounce on unsuspecting tourists and encouraging them to fake sickness, and then claiming off their respective hotels.
Police raid on street vendors POLICE in Arona, who carried out a three-day operation against street-vending, seized more than 80kg of merchandise being sold on the Los Cristianos and Las Americas promenades. They filed 15 complaints, yet none of the sellers was on the island illegally, and no counterfeit merchandise was found, according to a statement from Arona Town Hall. Police Commissioner Carolina Reverón said: “The Local Police noticed an increase in street vendors along the sea-front promenades, which gives a poor image to the municipality. “It is also unfair to those who do comply with the
regulations by paying their taxes, which contribute to the maintenance of public
services.” This operation will be repeated, to guarantee that certain
laws, established in 2006 by Arona Council, are being upheld.

Corruption and confusion reigns in Rajoy’s PP party THE Spanish Government’s ruling Popular Party (PP) is again being tainted to the core by corruption, with amazement and confusion leading the responses to the latest scandal to hit the conservative group in Madrid: Operation Lezo. This new “graft” probe, which involves arrests and questionings, is the result of an investigation into alleged fraud, money-laundering and misappropriation of public funds, carried out by politicians and businessmen involved in the public company Canal de Isabel II. It has already led to the arrest of former regional premier Ignacio González, while his predecessor, Esperanza Aguirre, has resigned as spokesperson for the PP at Madrid City Council, where the party holds 21 seats. It does not help PP matters
that Rajoy has been ordered to testify at a corruption trial, although he has not been accused of wrongdoing. Numerous companies are suspected of bribing members of his party, in exchange for contracts, with 37 defendants facing charges
of fixing tenders worth over 350m euros. True to form, though, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy continues to say nothing about the matter, electing instead to focus on his international agenda. He was seen on Monday
There’s no escaping it
HUNDREDS of people gathered in front of the ruling PP (Popular Party) Madrid headquarters on Tuesday evening in protest at political corruption, in the wake of new revelations of alleged graft by former regional government officials. Marchers banged on pots and yelled: “The PP is not a party, it’s a gang.” And raised signs bearing messages such as, “Your envelope, my cut,” alluding to under-thetable cash bribes said to be paid out by businessmen in exchange for government contracts. The protest began at 8pm and was organised through social media, bypassing the administrative channels used for filing demonstration requests. As such, it was not authorised by the government, which warned ahead of the event that protesters could face fines under Spain’s Citizen Security Law, popularly referred to as the Gag Law, because of its crackdown on public protest. Sanctions for attending unauthorised demonstrations,
as long as no more than 20 people show up, are, typically, around 600 euros. But the new legislation opens the door for tougher fines, depending on how the event plays out. Refusing to break up an unauthorised gathering in a place of public transit when ordered to do so by relevant authorities could entail fines of up to 30,000 euros. The same day, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy made his first statement in connection with the string of new scandals affecting his party. They have already led to the arrest of former Madrid Premier Ignacio González, and have booted party veteran Esperanza Aguirre
out of politics altogether, after more than three decades. But Rajoy said: “You do the crime, you do the time, as we are witnessing.” He was speaking at an informal meeting with journalists inside the Spanish ambassador’s residence in Montevideo, Uruguay, where the Prime Minister is on a Latin American tour that first took him to Brazil. But that was as far as the Spanish leader, renowned for his ability to avoid thorny questions about domestic issues, would go. His main message was that it would be “a serious mistake” to generalise and suspect the entire political class of corruption.
in Brazil, where he made a public appearance next to President Michel Temer, but he accepted no questions. That’s because he knew what was in store: a bombardment of queries regarding this latest investigation into kickbacks-forcontracts back home. For now, at least, Rajoy’s response to the number of scandals affecting his party - Gürtel, Púnica, Lezo and more - is to travel abroad, keep quiet about Spain’s domestic troubles, and deliver speeches about the importance of his country maintaining economic growth and job creation. After Brazil and Uruguay, Rajoy visits Brussels and China, his chief concern being to appear that it’s “business as usual” at international level. But all is not well back home. Rajoy and Javier Arenas are the only two remaining members of the PP leadership from pre-2008 days, when the Gürtel graft scandal hit the headlines. And while no statements are forthcoming from them, the younger party leaders have already expressed “indignation and shame” at the state of affairs. Young Deputy Secretaries at national party headquarters have made a private pact to keep their anger under wraps. But they are aware that, since their appointment two years ago in a bid to rejuvenate the party’s image, they have been sent
out to press conferences, TV studios and public debates to defend the PP’s socalled honesty and internal regeneration. And that’s in the light of some leading party members continuing to line their pockets through shady deals. These people include Ignacio González and Rodrigo Rato, the former International Monetary Fund managing director, who was found guilty of misappropriation of funds through his use of complimentary credit cards, handed out by struggling banks. The mood among these younger leaders is one of disillusionment, weariness and confusion, and, above all, impotence. “What more can we do?” is the reply, when asked if there is a plan set up to deal with this new wave of corruption. “We will forge ahead, and keep working and focusing on the real problems of Spaniards.” The PP, which heads a minority government following two inconclusive elections in Spain and a 10-month stalemate, now has fingers-crossed that the scandal will blow over, that unemployment figures will continue to drop, that tourists will keep coming in droves this summer, and that opposition parties will run into trouble of their own. And that, particularly, means the Socialists (PSOE), with their upcoming primaries to elect a new leader.

Ferry collision leads to a huge diesel slick
THE Canarian Government swiftly introduced an emergency plan to minimise pollution after a huge ferry, on its way to Tenerife, ploughed into a wall of the Nelson Mandela Quay in Las Palmas, the capital of Gran Canaria. At least 18 passengers were injured last Friday at around 8.30pm. Five needed hospital treatment, when the Volcรกn de Tamasite, operated by Naviera Armas, slammed into the quayside after hitting a breakwater. Officials said there were five fuel pipes inside the pier into which the ship collided, releasing 25,000 litres of diesel into the sea. Other sources, however, say the total could have been more than double that amount. A crisis meeting of the Canarian Government was held as authorities began the mopping-up operation of the slick, reported to be

Flat-mate stabbed
THE Guardia Civil arrested a 22-yearold Nigerian woman said to have stabbed her flatmate in the chest, in their shared El Fraile apartment.
500m wide and 3km long at one point. But by Sunday, authorities said it had been reduced by about 80%. The boat is believed to have crashed after the voltage dropped for just two minutes, according to the operating company. This caused a loss of power to its engines after leaving the
port. It was carrying some 140 passengers and hit a breakwater as it manoeuvred while exiting the port, heading for Tenerife. But Naviera Armas insists the outage would not have been a problem had the ferry been sailing on the open sea, where there would have been no obstacles.
Video footage showed that the ship was adrift, at the mercy of the sea. And, as well as the 140 passengers, there were 30 crew-members and dozens of vehicles on board as it hit a concrete wall at the port entrance. The Las Palmas desalination plant was closed until further notice.
But officers had no idea why the incident took place and are looking into it. The victim, who was seriously injured, managed to call the Emergency Services for help, and is currently in intensive care in Candelaria Hospital. The Nigerian was arrested by the Guardia Civil and detained at Las Americas Police Station, before appearing before Arona Courts on Tuesday morning. A magistrate released her, provisionally, until the ensuing court hearing.

Floating stable housed 7,000 cattle for hours in Santa Cruz
Phew, what a pong! THOUSANDS of people living along the Santa Cruz coast, in neighbourhoods such as Valleseco and María Jiménez, and especially in the popular area of Avenida de Anaga, were outraged on Monday. And no wonder! The most horrendous smell, wafting across to the mainland,
came from the Polaris 2 ship, which transports more than 7,000 cattle at a time and was anchored off Tenerife’s capital. What made matters worse was that the boat arrived early and remained there until midnight, its nauseating stench pervading the atmosphere for hour after hour. Alberto, a Valleseco resident, said: “The bad smell hit me like a hammer when I left the house. My first reaction was to look at the soles of my shoes.”
He added: “It’s outrageous. The bars are pulling their hair out because no one can bear sitting on their terraces.” The effects on businesses were confirmed by Manuel, manager of a nearby restaurant, who said: “As soon as I reached the premises, I start looking for where the horrible smell was coming from. “The day has been ruined because customers, understandably, cannot stand the smell.” Julio, another local resident,
said: “I am amazed that the stench is coming from a ship … and nor do I want to imagine what the sailors are going through. “When I left my house and noticed a bad smell in the car, I thought it was a blockage in the sewers, since it was very strong and quite unpleasant.” Remarkably, it is not the first time the stench from this floating stable has invaded the Canary Islands’ coast. The boat docked in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
Curiously, the boat was called Al Mahmoud 2 in 2012. The following year it had been renamed Polaris 2 and was transporting about 8,000 cattle from Brazil to Tunisia. Then, in 2014, it was carrying 4,000 animals from Cartagena to Palestine. In fact, the Canaries is a common refuelling point for vessels, and this ship, in particular, is commonly known as “The Smelly Ship”. It won’t be too difficult to sniff out where in the islands it has docked next time!
The Volcano is no threat now
A FOUR-DAY hunt by police officers for the man known as The Volcano, finally ended last Saturday with his arrest on a bus, and, eventually, imprisonment.
He was accused of torching two caravans and a shack in El Puertito, Armeñime, assaulting his former partner there, as well as resisting and threatening officers. Local Police were warned by the Guardia Civil that The Volcano, aka Jose FGG, whom they considered dangerous, had boarded the 473 bus, so they flagged it down at the next stop and arrested him.
He appeared before an Arona magistrate on Tues-
day, and was promptly sent to Tenerife II penitentiary.
The fire started at around 3.30pm last Wednesday. It
mainly affected the caravan in which the victim lived, before spreading to the other caravan and the shack by the time firefighters arrived. The Volcano, a well-know criminal with an extensive police record, had been arrested for a similar incident in an abandoned hotel in Callao Salvaje the previous day. But after appearing before magistrates, he was released and headed straight to his ex-partner’s residence. Acquaintances describe him as an extremely violent individual, especially with his ex-partners, which is why he was jailed immediately, awaiting trial.

Missing pensioner found
A PENSIONER aged 73, Eugenio Martínez Rodríguez, reported missing last week from his home in El Puertito de Güímar, has been found, safe and well after crashing into a barranco. Eugenio runs regularly in the area, but last Tuesday he left his usual route and lost his way, badly. Volunteers from Los Reale-
jos, Candelaria, Arafo, Santa Cruz, El Rosario, Güimar and El Sauzal, as well as dogs from La Laguna, gathered for a search party, such was their concern, and were delighted to find him alive. He had suffered bruises and hypothermia, and was disoriented. But he was lifted from the barranco by helicopter and flown to Güímar football pitch, from where an ambulance took him to the Nuestra Señora de Candelaria university hospital.
Would-be killer used a knife and baseball bat A MAN aged 47, with a criminal record, was arrested last week in Santa Cruz, accused of attempting to stab and beat another man to death. The incident happened around 7.15am when a fight broke out between them. It ended with one being stabbed various times. His main wound
needed 20 stitches, and the suspect also beat him with a baseball bat. National Police, who assisted the 37-yearold victim, called for an ambulance, which took him to the University Hospital for medical care. During that time the accused was found and arrested. The knife and baseball bat were also recovered. He was referred to local magistrates and was ordered to prison immediately.
Not to be sniffed at!
THIS careless motorist, who collided with a Santa Cruz tram on Tuesday morning at the junction of Salamanca Street and Avenue Islas Canarias, suffered a minor nose injury only.

Spain way behind China car-builders CHINA built 24 million cars last year, which surpassed Spain’s manufacturing output by an astonishing tenfold.
The east-Asian giant, which has topped the list of world car-builders, was followed by Japan, which built 7.9m, Germany (5.7m), US (3.9m) and South Korea (3.9m). Spain came seventh on the list of top producers, with 2.4 million, while the UK closed
out the top-10 by hanging on to its 2015 position with 1.7 million cars. It was an impressive figure for the UK, despite Brexit, and amid fears that manufacturers based in Britain might move operations to Europe.
Car registrations now streets ahead THE number of vehicle registrations in the South of Tenerife has more than doubled in the last five years.
This has been put down to the economy’s improvement in general, and, above all, excellent tourism figures. These have continued to grow in the last few years, generating an increase in the car-rental industry and helping the sale of vehicles double. Five years ago, in the midst of the recession, vehicle registrations reached just 4,920 units between the nine southern municipalities (Arona, Adeje, Grana-
dilla, Guía de Isora, San Miguel, Santiago del Teide, Arico, Fasnia and Vilaflor). But that total soared to 10,314 units in 2016, which means more than 28 cars were registered each day. And the current trend indicates that the manufacturers’
good run in the South will continue throughout this year. So far, in the first quarter, which is not usually the most buoyant, the 2,000 registration mark was exceeded by almost 100 than in the same 2016 period.

Surbiton car thief is pinched in Marbella A MAN, who is alleged to have stolen two luxury cars from a Surbiton dealership in Surrey, has been held in Marbella on a European Arrest Warrant. The 33-year-old, from Chertsey, also in Surrey, was arrested in England after the crime was committed in January 2012. But after being released on bail, he fled the country before the case was brought to court. By now, he will have been extradited back to the UK.
Drowned man found floating
ZAC Adeje Centro has joined forces with the local Council’s Department of Economic Development to design a series of activities, linked to Spanish Mother’s Day next Sunday (7th May). And among the prizes is a cruise for two. A photo-call set-up has been installed in two Adeje locations: Plaza César Manrique today (Friday), and Parque Piedra Redonda next Sunday (5th May). From 11am to 2pm, people can record a message for their mums and enter a draw. Also, purchases made in participating stores will automatically enter you into the raffle for the cruise, as well as for various other prizes. The campaign is designed to galvanise local commerce
by encouraging shopping locally under the theme “Mi Madre Es La Mejor” (Best Mother Ever). Manuel Luis Méndez Martín, Adeje’s Economic Development Councillor, says: “Shopping in Adeje
has added value because it brings consumers and local businesses closer. “It’s easier and quicker, and, of course, anything that helps the local economy is also a boost for job creation.” ZAC Adeje Centro has
on-going campaigns to promote local companies, while offering prizes and promotions to customers. Méndez Martín adds: “ZAC Adeje Centro is working well. Last month, we held a meeting with over 100 local businesses from the zone to outline details of the campaign. “ZAC is meeting all its objectives, and our hope is that the local commercial network understands that without its participation, the campaign doesn’t make any sense.” The councillor also spoke of the importance of attracting customers to the zone and winning their loyalty; not just Adeje residents but those from outside the borough as well, to the benefit of all. This initiative is part of an overall, year-long plan to galvanise local businesses. It was designed by the Department of Local Economic Development, in partnership with ZAC.

NEWS IN BRIEF Truck thief was drunk
A DRUNKEN woman, who stole a delivery truck on Sunday in Morro Jable, Fuerteventura, was arrested by the Guardia Civil. The lorry, owned by the Naviera Armas company, was parked when the woman, who already has a criminal record, made off with it at around 8.30am. The 45-year-old took advantage of the careless driver, who left his keys in the ignition, and damaged various vehicles while manoeuvring her way out of Pájara Port. She was finally halted by Local Police and charged with vehicle theft, reckless driving while inebriated, and damaging other vehicles.
Cycle-safety man killed
A BRITISH holiday-maker was knocked off his bicycle and killed by a 48-year-old Spaniard on Tuesday in the Mallorcan resort of Puerto Alcudia. He has been named as London cycle-safety campaigner Bryan Stout, 85, who was a supporter of Stop Killing Cyclists and a member of the London Cycling Campaign.
Biker badly hurt
A BIKER was airlifted to Candelaria hospital on Sunday afternoon after colliding with a car on the TF-47 in Guía de Isora and sustaining severe injuries. Emergence services, alerted at 4.30pm, sent an ambulance and a medical helicopter, which was able to land on a road near the accident. Paramedics stabilised the 41-year-old motorbike rider, who was then airlifted to Candelaria Hospital for further medical treatment.
Dead dolphins found YOUNGSTERS from Fañabe’s primary school 6th class recently completed a month-long course in radio, organised by Adeje Council. They learnt about how this medium of communication works, how to understand the messages transmitted and how to create, write and record messages for radio. The schoolkids also had a practical day, visiting the Radio Sur 107.9Fm studios in Adeje Cultural Centre and the Press Centre. The initiative was run jointly by the Departments of Communication and Education, under Councillors Ze-
benzui Chinea Linares and Adolfo Alonso Ferrera, who both agreed on the “need to improve the community skills of the students at this stage in their education, and before they enter secondary school”. They added that the students were learning about the importance of constructing and designing a message for communication. The course was run in two sections; theoretic and practical, with the students, on the final day, preparing a series of radio announcements and publicity spots, and recording them in the radio station. The importance of reading as a tool in improving word
use and adaptation was also emphasised during the course. The youngsters also examined how news stories and adverts for radio were constructed. The 26 schoolkids who took part in the course, and teachers from the Fañabe school, were extremely pleased with the results of what was, in essence, a pilot project, with everyone seeing the benefits of their experience. The councillors said: “With this course, the Council is continuing to allow students to experience work practices, and also allowing them to see the workings of the local administration.”
TWO common dolphins were found dead off the coast of La Oliva and Tuineje by the Fuerteventura Cabildo’s Environmental Officers, in collaboration with Maritime Rescue. The first dolphin body, a five-year-old male specimen, was found floating near the Bajo Negro beach, in Corralejo, La Oliva. The other body, also an adult male, was found by a man in his kayak, near Agando beach in Tuineje. The bodies were taken to La Oliva Biological Station, where a necropsy was performed to determine the cause of their deaths.
How was cow beached?
A COW and a dolphin have been found washed up on the beaches of Fuengirola, after Malaga had been lashed by strong winds. With eight-metre-high waves battering the coast, it wasn’t difficult to guess how the dolphin became stranded. But where on earth did the cow come from, because there are no cattle farms in the southern region of Malaga? Unfortunately, authorities were unable to save the dolphin despite attempts to keep it hydrated, while it was suggested that the cow had been dead for several days.

Puerto Colón’s Regatta treat for Bank Holiday
Car-fall killer
A WOMAN aged 30 died on Wednesday after her car plunged 30 metres, from Camino El Morito on to the Los Roques beach in Fasnia. The car was virtually crushed, with the driver trapped inside, and firefighters had to cut it open. But paramedics could only confirm the woman’s death. An emergency rescue helicopter was also dispatched to the scene to ensure, from the air, that there were no other victims.

Royal couple make a real day out of it SPAIN’S foremost royals, King Felipe and Queen Letizia, put their hearts into visiting Tenerife on Tuesday, during their second official visit to the Canary Islands. And they saw plenty to keep them interested, and busy! They also received a card from schoolchildren with an important, educational note they had written inside. Employment, economic sectors, Canarian sports and the audio-visual world were some of the areas visited by the popular couple, alongside Dolors Montserrat, the Cabildo’s Minister of Health.
They began their day out with a visit to the Cabildo’s Santa Cruz headquarters at 11am. And more than 300 people - children, adults, locals and tourists - crowded the doors of the Insular Palace to welcome Felipe and Letizia. La Pureza primary schoolchildren were the first to meet the King and Queen. And youngsters Elena and Paco presented Queen Letizia with a bouquet of flowers and a card, made by all the pupils. Cleverly, in the card, the kids wrote a note asking for more opportunities in education for children and young people. The pupils admitted to being somewhat nervous about the royal visit, but it was plain to see that they were also delighted to meet them.
Spanish kids on breadline A REPORT by the United Nations Children’s Fund places Spain third in the list of child-poverty countries, behind only Romania and Greece. An estimated 40% of children live below the poverty line in Spain as a result of the 2008 economic crisis, and the years of austerity which followed. The Spanish Government cut child spending in 2010 by 15%, which had a negative impact on education quality. And it is believed that Spain’s elderly received better care than children did during the crisis.
How on earth was I nabbed? A MASKED bank robber virtually mugged himself after insisting on counting the 500 euros he demanded at the cash desk. Following the knifepoint robbery, carried out by José Luis García Morato in the La Caixa bank, in Puerto Serrano, Cadiz, he was recognised, despite his mask. But instead of fleeing, he began to count his haul at the cash desk to make sure it was all there! He also told the cashier he needed the money to pay his drugdealer, following a party the night before … and his voice was also recognised. Garcia Maroato was arrested minutes later by Guardia Civil, who soon realised there was an arrest warrant out for him for other offences.

Stolen yacht was spotted Our grand winner! - sailing down motorway
A YACHT-OWNER, whose 45,000-euro boat had been stolen, learned that it had been towed along a motorway, two provinces away, the following day. He reported the overnight theft, from the Marina Greenwich port in the Alicante province of Altea. And the next day, an employee from his
company, in whose name the yacht was registered, told police he had seen it on the back of a lorry. It was spotted on a motorway on the coast of the province of Castellón, over 200km north of its rightful location. Traffic police in Oropesa, who were informed, took less than one hour to track down the lorry, complete with yacht on board. They discovered that its identification plates, engine serial number and
boat ID number had all been changed and were fake. And the lorry drivers were in possession of a forged invoice “proving” they had purchased it! A lorry search by the traffic cops also uncovered various tools used to alter the yacht specification. Two men were arrested and handed over to a court in Castellón city, and the boat was returned to its owner … less than 24 hours after it had been pinched!
LAST week, Canarian Weekly reached a massive milestone with its 1,000th issue, spanning 20 years. We have been running a competition, via Facebook, for the last couple of months, offering one lucky reader a 1,000-euro prize. And Gemma Bentley, originally from South Shields, was that lucky person.
Gemma, who has been on the island for 17 years and works at Deli on the Hill, Puerto Santiago, popped in the office this week to pick up her winnings. She told Canarian Weekly: “I’ve never won anything before! I’m saving the money as I don’t want to waste it.” But she did say that it could well burn a hole in her pocket, the longer she has it! Congratulations, Gemma!

Queen honours Helen for 35 years of helping Brits HELEN Diaz de Arcaya Keating, Tenerife’s British Vice Consul, received her honorary MBE medal at a Santa Cruz ceremony on Tuesday in the Real Casino de Tenerife.
British Ambassador Simon Manley (pictured with Helen) presented the award in recognition of her 35-plus years giving help to British citizens on the island. “I am delighted to present this award to Helen as recognition of her many years of hard work, often out of hours and in the most distressing of circumstances, that have brought help
to many hundreds of Britons,” said the Ambassador. “Throughout these 35 years, she has shown
exemplary leadership and has maintained a fantastic level of energy, enthusiasm and compassion.”
Ms Keating, a Spanish national, began her Tenerife Consulate career as an administrative officer in the early Eighties. She worked her way up, not only to become Vice Consul but also Deputy Head of the post. “I am incredibly proud to receive this honour,” said Ms Keating. “This is a fabulous day for me, and indeed, I have the honour of working with wonderful people.” The Consulate, in the Plaza Weyler, Santa Cruz, covers the consular district of Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. More than 2.2 million UK visitors travelled to Tenerife in 2016, and around 15,000 British citizens are registered as living on the island.

Spanish slugs can cause havoc to gardens in UK
GARDENS in Britain could be devastated this summer by hoards of amorous Spanish slugs, because they cross-breed with the common variety to create “superslugs”, which are highly fertile. The pests, known officially as the Arion vulgaris, breed twice as fast as their British counterparts anyway. They grow up to six inches long and are immune to regular,
UK control methods. Tests have proved that they are even capable of eating up to 20 slugpellets without being harmed. The scary slugs are said to have arrived on salad leaves delivered to Britain in 2010, only to be killed off by cold weather. But experts, who say they are capable of wiping out a garden in no time, fear they are mating with native species to create “superslugs”, which are twice as greedy and can survive both hot and cold climates. The University of Aberdeen’s Dr Leslie Noble said any Anglo-Span-
ish hybrids are “highly fertile”, capable of breeding native species out of existence. “When they hybridise, the British native slugs get swamped by the invasive genes,” he added. “It’s like adding a large amount of white paint to a black pot. It starts to go grey and, eventually, if you add enough, it goes white.” Dr Noble suggests that the best way to get rid of the Spanish slugs, and their “superslug” offspring, is to leave out a few saucers of beer because it attracts them … and they probably drown in it.
Robbers not street-wise!
GUARDIA Civil officers caught a couple of thieves in the act as they carried TVs and other items, worth 2,000 euros, across the street from a nearby property they had just raided. The men, aged 21 and 27, who live in the area, were pinched after a resident reported the break-in. The goods were returned to the owner promptly.

Cats Welfare News THERE are many different colours and patterns of cats’ coats, and it can be difficult to choose when adopting. But why does this happen, even within the same litter? A female may mate with many different males when in season. Because each egg is fertilised separately, each kitten can, theoretically, have a different father. Male kittens obtain both colour genes from their mother, so the males of a litter will always be either the same colour as their mother, or a different shade of their mother’s fur. If the mother is multicoloured, then just one
Did you know...? of her shades may be passed on to her son. Female kittens, however, have a colour gene from each parent, so the female kittens in a litter will always be a combination of their mum and dad’s colours, although shades may vary. It is only the immediate parents that affect coat
colour, so there is no chance of two tabbies producing a ginger cat for example, and dominant colours cannot skip generations either, so a black cat must have had at least a partially-black mum or dad. In addition, two longhaired parents cannot have a short-haired kitten, whereas a kitten’s pattern can be inherited from either parent. Nothing of this really matters though, as they are all gorgeous! Kittens available for adoption We have fluffy kittens of all different colours available

By Carol schleisman at currencies direct
WHILE the week beginning 17th April was expected to be a fairly quiet one in terms of currency news, markets actually opened with a bang after the Easter break. Surprising political developments saw GBP/EUR rocket from 1.1799 euros to 1.1990 euros, its best levels for nearly ten months. Meanwhile, the euro was kept under pressure, ahead of the first round of voting in the French Presidential election, leaving the EUR/ GBP exchange rate to slide from £0.8628 to a low of £0.8339. However, with the French election resulting in the outcome economists hoped for, the pound dropped by over 1% against the euro, with the common currency surging across the board. Without doubt, UK PM The-

GBP/EUR down from 2017 highs
resa May’s unscheduled announcement on Tuesday, 18th April was the news grabbing the most headlines last week. The PM shook the currency market when she declared her intention to call for a June 8th general election. The general belief that the election will see the Conservative party increase its majority (an outcome which could improve May’s negotiating power during Brexit discussions), was the driving force behind the
pound’s gains. But the euro fought back in the wake of the first round of the French Presidential election. Centrist Emmanuel Macron and far-right Marine Le Pen secured the largest proportion of votes. As Macron is expected to trump Le Pen in the second round, the odds of France remaining part of the EU were seen to increase, and demand for the euro surged. Both the pound and euro are more likely to be driven by
political news than economic news over the next few weeks, with polls relating to the UK general election and French Presidential election having the potential to create volatility for both currencies. If it looks like the Conservatives will secure a greater majority in June, the pound may return to its recent highs. However, if French polls continue favouring a Macron victory, the prospect of economic
and political stability in the Eurozone’s second-largest economy would limit GBP/ EUR gains. Conversely, any sign that Le Pen is pulling ahead would be euronegative. In terms of economic news, the most influential developments on the horizon include the European Central Bank (ECB) interest-rate decision, and UK GDP data for Q1. Hints of a rate cut from the ECB could send the euro lower, while the pound could suffer if UK growth slowed considerably in the first quarter of 2017. Jam-packed Barcelona is cutting back tourists IF you’re planning to visit Barcelona any time soon, be aware that millions of other people have the same idea. And many of you will not be welcomed with open arms.
Some 32 million visitors, who flooded the historic city last year, outnumbered its 1.6m residents by far. Authorities in many large cities across the world would be drooling at the prospect of being overwhelmed by tourists. But Barcelona has seen the number of visitors more than triple since it hosted the 1992 Olympics, and Mayor Ana Colau, in a bid to curb tourism, has set out a new policy. It follows her ban to stop
any new hotels opening, and, in fact, her Strategic Plan For Tourism 2020, presented in February, lays out a number of measurements aimed at deterring the masses. Charges for day-trippers will be ramped up, parking rates will increase, and there are plans to limit the number of Segways and electric scooters in the city’s more touristic parts. Holiday apartments will also be hammered with the highest property-tax rates, and the city will refuse to provide licences for new tourist accommodation. Not surprisingly, many locals, tired of being outnumbered by cruisepassengers and daytrippers, have given the Mayor’s new measures a huge thumbs-up! Janet Sanz, a Deputy Mayor in charge of urban
planning, and Colau’s close aide, said: “We have to stop this free-flow that operates without any control in the city.” Yet some people, especially those in the commercial sector, are unhappy with the new action plan. Hotel and retail groups have issued a joint statement, criticising what they consider to be the latest move by the Mayor to “demonise” tourism. The industry says tourism
accounts for 14% of Barcelona’s GDP and employs over 100,000 people. Nuria Paricio, director of Barcelona Oberta, which is an association of more than 6,700 shops and businesses, believes tourism is being turned into “a scourge”. She added: “This plan is not going to stop the illegal apartments that are appearing like mushrooms in Airbnb and other platforms, and which are
responsible for pushing up the prices of rentals in apartments.” Colau’s government has initiated legal battles against online platforms, which allow home-owners to rent out their properties without paying occupancy taxes. It also has pledged to increase the number of inspectors combing the city for unlicenced apartments from 20 to 110 in 2018. A 2015 study, conducted by Barcelona City Hall, found that 5.3% of respondents felt that tourism was the biggest problem facing the city, ahead of poverty at 5.1%. And two years earlier, a study by MasterCard found that Barcelona was Europe’s third-mostvisited city, after London and Paris.

The Truth About Stress Thursday 4th May, BBC1, 21.00
Stress has been called ‘the health epidemic of the 21st century’ by the World Health Organisation. Experts believe it can contribute to lifethreatening diseases such as diabetes, dementia and types of cancer - and the pressures of 24/7 modern-day life are often held to blame. In this programme Fiona Phillips explores some of the very latest scientific research behind stress, and demonstrates a number of techniques designed to decrease common stress factors. But is stress inherently bad for us? Fiona investigates the notion that stress in small doses can actually be good for us - if we can simply change the way we perceive it. She also speaks about her own experiences with stress and describes her mechanisms for coping with it. Alongside a team of experts, and a number of willing volunteers, Fiona puts herself into a number of highstress situations to truly understand the meaning of stress and its power - if we could use it to our advantage.

Larry [Josh O’Connor] is excited; his latest novel is being published in England today. However, everyone seems far too busy to notice. Even Louisa [Keeley Hawes] is more concerned with baking for the market. Gutted that the family haven’t even read his novel, Larry is further disappointed when his attempts to show it off at a local bar go unnoticed. Leslie’s [Callum Woodhouse] interest is piqued when he overhears Margo [Daisy Waterstone] and Pavlos [Nikos Orestis Chaniotakis] discussing how kumquat liquor is made. Seeing this as a potential business venture, he ropes Larry into his scheme who becomes more attentive when he learns how quickly it can be made. Margo, however, is unhappy that they are stealing the monk’s recipe. Hugh [Daniel Lapaine] informs Louisa that he has told Vasilia [Errika Bigiou] it is over between them and begs Louisa to come to supper. Will Louisa agree? Theo [Yorgos Karamihos] is the only person to have read and loved Larry’s novel but Louisa cuts Larry to the quick by suggesting he could make more money writing greeting card sentiments. If he fails as a writer maybe Hugh could give him a job at his olive press. Feeling unusually sorry for Larry, Leslie urges Louisa to be kinder to his brother and tells her how her disinterest in his novel is upsetting him. When Louisa discovers that Gerry [Milo Parker] spent the night with Roger searching for a female otter she realises she has got the balance wrong between allowing her children freedom and supervising them. Her first apology is to Larry, claiming she will help with his writing career and demands everyone read his novel – except Gerry as it’s too rude. Following Gerry’s recent antics and feral look Louisa insists he needs teaching. Banning him from leaving the garden she makes Lugaretzia [Anna Savva] his keeper. In an attempt to get his otters to mate, Gerry plays them the guitar, but it seems doubtful this will prove successful. In order to make things up to Larry, Louisa decides to arrange a reading evening. But will the event be all she and Larry hope for?

British Jews, German Passports Tuesday 2nd May, BBC 1, 22.45
After the Brexit vote, thousands of Britons applied for dual nationality. But for the British Jewish community, many of whom are the descendants of those who fled Nazi Germany, the referendum result has created a unique dilemma. This film follows three British Jews as they decide whether to activate a clause in the German Constitution that permits descendants of German refugees to reclaim German citizenship. Whilst seeking German nationality offers up the possibility of retaining benefits associated with being a citizen of an EU country, for Britain’s Jews Germany has more commonly been associated with the traumas of the Holocaust. Each of the contributors featured in this programme must therefore confront their own family history. Doing this involves delving into archives and tackling difficult questions. Baroness Julia Neuberger grapples with questions of identity, while Robert and Hilary return to their ancestral homes in Germany for the first time. Hilary discovers where her family originally came from and investigates whether a legend she was told as a child might actually be true. Robert has always wanted to know what actually happened to his grandparents and his cousin Karla. He unearths their final journey and is able to say a prayer at the place where they were deported to their deaths in 1942. As the journey concludes, each has to come to terms with whether they can cope with reclaiming German citizenship. All are influenced by how contemporary Germans deal with the past, but not all can overcome their family’s tragedies.

Our Friend Victoria Tuesday 2nd May, BBC1, 21.30
In this episode, Maxine Peake guides us through a selection of classic comedy and some forgotten moments that perfectly capture Victoria’s views of the diet and health industry. In her stand-up Vic reveals her generous rectangular shape, reveals why she sets off the alarms in Topshop and why diet plans aren’t for her. There are standout clips - the dinnerladies bemoaning the size of their buttocks; an unforgettable aerobics class with fatties with attitude in Fattitude; Marjorie & Joan’s top tips for a perfect tan; and a bonkers but sublime sketch called The Shoe Shop. Julie Walters and Celia Imrie are on hand to ponder the transformation of Acorn Antiques into a health spa, while Duncan Preston reveals the pain he endured when faced with a wrinkly gusset. Harriet Thorpe and Kate Robbins recall their lighthearted chats about yo-yo dieting and Zumba classes with their old friend Vic. While Michael Ball, Thelma Barlow and Andrew Dunn discuss the importance of egg and chips in the creative process. It was an honour for Maxine to present this programme. Victoria was her comedy hero. When she was young, she would watch As Seen On TV over and over again. Years later when she got the call to audition for a part in dinnerladies, she was gobsmacked. Not only would she be in the same room as her hero, she might even get to work with her. Maxine got the part of Twinkle, which was a dream come true, so she is thrilled to be able to look back at this celebration of the finest work of her friend, Victoria.

White, angular and perched atop zigzagged stilts like the local fishermen’s houses, it pays homage to the European settlers that arrived from Ireland and Devon to fish cod. A cod-fishing moratorium was put in place in the 1990s, and the island’s population subsequently shrank as families moved away in search of other work. Giles and Monica meet founder Zita Cobb. Her family has lovingly folded its rich heritage into a unique retreat for guests from all over the world. Giles is initiated as an honorary Newfoundlander by the inn’s housekeepers, who rope him into a community boat race. Monica spends time with local guide Norm, who reveals how to grow the perfect potato. Monica and Giles both help to put on a traditional Fogo Inn ‘wedding scoff’. Above all, they tell the poignant story of the fight to revive the island.

Sitting down, an unhealthy way to live...
The price on your head
By Carl pattison from Robot
“I DID it to save a few euros” is one, “I thought I could do it myself” is another, along with “my friend said she could do it”. These are all but a few of the excuses we hear in the salon, as to why someone has messed up their hair. Yet, paying the cost of correcting your hair in the hands of a nonprofessional can add up to a small fortune. Often, it’s salon work that’s gone wrong, or home colours and cuts that have ended up in tears. As many of my clients agree, “you get what you pay for”, so why
is it that some can’t resist saving a little money, and risk a cheaper service, only to be devastated with the results? Last week, a new product company offered me a special deal of 1½ litres of shampoo for just over three euros! I wouldn’t wash my car in it, let alone clients’ hair. Cheap anything, be it food, clothing or hairdressing, comes at a price; the quality isn’t, and can’t be, the same. You are what you eat, wear and
put on your head; it’s the same principle. Corners have to be cut, and so does the professionalism. You can’t be offered cheap, yet expect the best; it just isn’t feasible. I’ve heard of salons using supermarket colours that they keep hidden, using these cheaper alternatives to save a few euros, without, of course, informing the client. It costs “X” to produce a salon colour, yet seeing bargain hairdressing just doesn’t add up. There has to be a profit, but at what cost to your hair? So, the next time you’re in the salon, ask about what’s being used and the ingredients/brand etc. This will ensure that you are getting what you pay for, and not a product that’s going to cause years of harm to your hair and your wallet.
Fashion has no size By Carl Pattison WE are very accustomed to seeing images of wafer-thin, bikini models with perfect bodies, and over-the-top, photoshopped pictures that have no relevance to today’s woman. Imagine if your day out at the beach started with “what the heck do I wear?” Larger women want to look just as good as any other lady, but, for some, finding that bikini/swimsuit is all that more difficult. Choosing one, if you can find one, is a major decision between what do you show, and what do you cover up? A two-piece
can be too revealing, yet a one-piece can look too mature and mumsy, and it can cover up the areas you want to tan. It’s all about personal choice, and how confident you are as a larger woman. You shouldn’t feel selfconscious, but, let’s face it, it’s the nearest you’ll get to being “naked” in public. Depending on the
style, opt for blockcoloured items or simple patterns. Don’t do loud and gaudy, as this will emphasise your shape. Keep things chic but stylish, and don’t add bulk by choosing embellished swimwear or the “shoestring-type” cuts. These will pile on the pounds, and make you look larger than you are. Beach wraps are great for making things more discreet, and will give you that added confidence as you’re arriving at/ leaving the beach. It’s all about finding the shape and cut that’s going to flatter you the most.

By Val Sainsbury FOR those of you who believe that keeping active can undo the bad effects of sitting for too long, think again! Even if you exercise regularly, being immobile can still be bad for your heart. “Based on existing evidence, we found that US adults are sedentary for about 6-8 hours a day,” said Deborah Rohm Young, Chair of The American Heart Association (AHA) panel. And the problem only gets worse with age. “Adults 60 years and older spend between 8.5 to 9.6 hours a day in sedentary time,” she added. “Regardless of how much physical activity someone gets, prolonged sitting could negatively impact the health of your heart and blood vessels.” And heart specialist, Dr. Barbara George, director of the Centre for Cardiovascular Lifestyle Medicine at Winthrop -University Hospital in Mineola, N.Y. agreed, saying: “Don’t be a sitting duck for cardiovascular disease; move more and sit less.” A sedentary lifestyle may also be associated with an increased risk of diabetes, impaired insulin sensitivity (linked to diabetes) and a higher risk of death from any cause.
According to the AHA, people should try to get at least 30 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise a day, to reach the recommended 150 minutes of moderate exercise, or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise, a week. This is necessary to lower one’s risk of heart disease and other causes of mortality, and is healthier than trying to cram their weekly exercise into one or two days. And it’s not yet clear if people should replace prolonged inactivity with simple movement, or moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. The AHA said: “There’s a lot of research that we need to do. This statement is important because it starts the ball rolling, and suggests sedentary behaviour may play an important role in heart health and more. But it’s too early to make conclusive recommendations, other than to encourage people to sit less and move more.” Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum is a cardiologist at Lenox Hill Hospital
in New York City. She agreed that, based on the evidence, sitting is more than just a ‘lack of moving’. “The real risk simply comes down to the amount we sit, without there being a true antidote [such as exercise],” she said. “Society has evolved to encourage sitting. “Our lives have become focused on activities requiring us to be still, whether it be commuting or transportation, our computers, or the television in our leisure time. “Sociologically, instead of being active to be productive or to have enjoyment, our productivity and fun often requires minimal exertion.” Dr. George offered some tips to help minimise sitting, and the health dangers it may cause: Take a 1-3 break every half-hour during the day to stand, or walk around. Stand or exercise while watching TV, or working on the computer. Give up your seat on public transport. “Walk and talk” rather than “sit and speak” while talking on the phone. If you sit at your job all day long, set an alarm on your mobile (on low) to remind yourself to stand up at least every two hours, for more than a minute at a time. Stretch, bend or take a short walk. Gradually reduce daily sitting time by 15-20 minutes a day, aiming for 2-3 fewer sedentary hours over a 12-hour day.

Go bananas for a good night's sleep ALTHOUGH we may not all realise its importance, sleep is as essential to our bodies as food or water.
Whenever we fall behind with our work, it seems natural to skip a few hours of sleep in order to catch up. But if we keep doing this, our bodies respond, and they are just as moody as we are. To avoid the nasty effects of sleep deprivation, try this banana and cinnamon tea, which can serve as a natural cure for restlessness, without any of the side effects of sleeping pills. Instead of replacing one health issue with another using medication, try a simple tea recipe to help you fall asleep. There are many reasons why we should always strive to protect a healthy sleeping routine, some of which include improved learning and memory, a good metabolism, a bright mood and even our safety during the day. Banana and cinnamon tea helps ensure restful sleep at night, by aiding your body as it cleanses the accumulated stress from throughout the day. Stress relief and bananas Bananas are a super-healthy snack that can deliver a great nutritional punch for your body. When it comes to achieving better sleep during the night, the potassium and magnesium in bananas can really offer a helping hand. Both these minerals serve as muscle relaxants, and let your body get ready to doze off. They also help your body fight off the excess of cortisol accumulated throughout a stressful day. In addition, bananas have
been linked to a host of potential health benefits. These include lowering blood pressure and decreasing the risk of developing asthma and certain types of cancer, as well as keeping the heart healthy. Bananas have also been shown to improve memory and even boost mood. At the end of the day, snacking
on a banana in the evening is a win-win situation. The soothing flavour of cinnamon Cinnamon is one of the healthiest spices available. A study published in The Journal of Nutrition showed that cinnamon could lower blood sugar in people with diabetes, help prevent Alzheimer's disease and
counteract the negative effects of fattening meals. In addition, cinnamon may be used to treat muscle spasms and infections, as well as to keep away the common cold. For those having trouble sleeping at night, cinnamon will act as a warming tonic. It will help your body relax and alleviate your stress. At the same time, it will take care of your body's digestion and help you achieve a restful, uninterrupted sleep. Tea combo works better than sleeping pills Sleeping pills might be a quick fix for your insomnia problem, but they're also very risky for your health. In addition, it doesn't take long to develop a tolerance and be forced to increase your dose, so why exchange one health issue for another? Banana and cinnamon tea could work to the same
effect, but without wreaking havoc in your body. Preparing banana and cinnamon tea is very simple, and takes no more than 10 minutes. All you need is a banana, a small pan of water, a sprinkle of cinnamon and, if you like, some stevia for sweetening. To begin, cut off the ends of the banana and place it in the pan. Then boil the pot of water with the banana for about 10 minutes. Finally, sprinkle the cinnamon and enjoy! Because conventional, processed sugar might spike your blood-sugar levels right before bed and lead to a restless night, stevia is a much-preferred alternative. About one hour before going to sleep, drink the cup of tea and allow your body to relax. You'll notice the difference in the morning, when you'll wake up in a fantastic mood!
Keep healthy: 'ave an avocado AVOCADOS are one of the favourites of the produce section in the shops. They’re the go-to ingredient for guacamole dips at parties, and turn up in everything from salads and wraps, to smoothies and even brownies. So what, exactly, makes this pear-shaped berry (yes, that’s right!) such a super food? Nutrient all-star Avocados offer nearly 20 vitamins and minerals in every serving, including potassium (which helps control blood pressure), lutein (which is good for your eyes), and folate (which is crucial for cell repair and during pregnancy). They are a good source of B vitamins, which help
you fight off disease and infection. They also give you vitamins C and E, plus natural plant chemicals that may help prevent cancer. Avocados are low in sugar, and they contain fibre, which helps you feel full longer. In one study, people who added a fresh avocado half to their lunch were less interested in eating during the next three hours. They are high in monounsaturated fat, which helps to lower bad cholesterol. How to prepare avocados Store avocados at room temperature, keeping in mind that they can take 4-5 days to ripen. To speed up the ripening process, put them in a paper bag, along with an apple or banana.
When the outside skins are black or dark purple, and yield to gentle pressure, they’re ready to eat or refrigerate. Wash them before cutting so that dirt and bacteria aren’t transferred from the knife onto the pulp. While guacamole is arguably the most popular way to eat avocado, you can also puree and toss with pasta, substitute for butter or oil in your favorite baked-good recipes, or spread or slice onto sandwiches. Avocado seeds Did you know that the seed makes the flesh pale in comparison? It contains 70% of the antioxidants, amino acids and other healing plant compounds in each avocado.
Here’s how to eat the seeds: First, allow your avocado pit or seed to dry out for approximately a week, once it has been removed from the fruit. Then, remove the fine layer around the seed which separates it from the flesh of the avocado. Use a cheese grater, coffee grinder, or food processor, and grate the seed. You can either sprinkle the grated avocado seed on salads, rice, and vegetable dishes, or use it in smoothies. Allergic to latex? If you have a latex allergy, talk to your doctor before adding avocado to your diet. People with a serious allergy to latex may also experience symptoms after eating avocado.

Window dressing for sunny days DR E S S I NG the windows is very important in any home as part of the interior- design scheme, but hot climates present a different kind of problem from the UK. Firstly, instead of keeping the cold out with thermal curtains, you need to think about limiting the amount of sun that can enter your property, for various reasons. Too much sun will leave your rooms hot, and fade the soft furnishings, including sofas and bedspreads. In addition, sun can affect your ability to watch TV, or be uncomfortable if it is direct, at the height of the afternoon. When the sun is at its hottest during the afternoon, you don’t want to close the curtains and sit in the dark, so you need to look for a solution that will solve all these problems. A nice solution, especially on balconies and terraces, are outside sun shades, which are attached to the wall and can be operated manually or with a remote control. Sometimes, the community dictates the fabric one is allowed to use for the sun shades. They can be a very nice decoration for your outside space, and help you keep the house cool, as well as protecting the furniture from fading, reducing the glare and protecting you from UV rays.
An alternative solution is to use slatted window dressings which can be opened or closed, and also give you the opportunity to change the angle of the slats to control the light. This is a more modern and versatile solution. Vertical blinds, for example, have slats that can be opened or closed, based on need. They can be made in sunblock material, so can completely block the light, or allow light in at certain angles. They can also be moved to either side, to allow entrance and exit through patio doors, for example. This option enables you to control the light coming into your room, and angle the slats so that the room is
still light, but without direct sunshine. This will allow you to watch TV, or protect and shade certain parts of your room as the sun moves around. There is a wide range of colours and textures available in both types of blind. If your house is overlooked by neighbours, or by people walking past, you can angle the slats so that your room benefits from natural light, but people cannot see inside. Japanese panels are a very chic option to dress your window, with wide slats of fabric that glide on separate rails. You can choose the height, width and number of panels and the materials. They glide smoothly, and offer a
functional and elegant way of shading your room. The slight disadvantage of this type of window dressing is that they really need to fit the windows perfectly, and it is unlikely that you will find readymade versions that will be exactly the right size. However, made-toorder blinds are not as expensive as you might think, so it’s definitely worth getting an estimate. All items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo on 922 789729, who will come to your home to measure and fit. Estimates are free and without obligation, and measuring and fitting is included in the price.

Plenty of homes will suit everyone’s needs
By Sonya Hinley from Tenerife Island rentals
THERE are some excellent opportunities available in Tenerife for purchasing a good-priced property. Whether it’s for a second home, an investment or as a rental property offering a good return, there are those to suit all budgets. Looking for a property as an investment may seem like a simple thing to do, but you have to bear in mind that what you like as a holiday apartment, may not always give the best return. The main tourist areas of Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas and Costa Adeje are popular resorts for holiday-makers. However, residents on the island like to consider areas outside the popular resorts, such as Valle San Lorenzo, Buzanada,
Las Chafiras and Chayofa, to name a few. Most long-term residents are quite happy to consider a 15-minute drive from the main resorts. It is important to remember that although the rental prices for these properties are slightly lower, the price of the property will be considerably lower than those in tourist areas. Tenerife is becoming a multinational island, with people from all walks of life. Many residents here love the Canarian properties which can be found when moving outside the towns, and the friendly atmosphere amongst the local people. Many families relocating to the island need to be close to schools and local amenities, which are available in abundance in popular areas. Tenerife properties offer a great investment, whether it be a studio, house or Canarian finca with its own orchard. People searching for a relaxed lifestyle in the Canarian countryside look
for fincas, where they can enjoy the benefits of peace and tranquility, without the hustle and bustle of the busier resorts. Two-bedroom properties are very popular, and the benefit of a second bedroom can bring in a healthy return on your investment. For any investor, the return is always important, as well as buying in an upcoming area. An example of this is Parque de la Reina, which, over the past few years, has grown immensely, making this a popular area with a primary school, park and the imminent construction of a secondary school. With a regular bus service, Los Cristianos is just a short journey away. Ground-floor properties, and those with outside space, make fantastic investment opportunities. With all-yearround sunshine, potential renters like to take full advantage of outdoor living, without having to leave their home. Many long-term residents
complain of lack of storage, so purchasing a property with a garage or internal storage room is a bonus for anyone renting the property. The majority of people moving to the island are downsizing and bringing personal belongings with them, so having the option of extra storage gives them the possibility of transporting their little piece of home with them. The question of furniture always arises with owners and tenants alike. Most properties here are sold furnished, and, although the majority of properties rented are furnished, some tenants have their own furniture. So, even if the property in which you decide to invest does not have furniture, or perhaps it has seen better days, this shouldn’t deter you from investing. Removing personal belongings and unnecessary clutter are imperative when renting out your investment property. Tenants needs as much space
as possible, so, on the odd occasion you do want to leave personal belongings in a property, then it may be advisable to lock these away in one cupboard. Even the most-responsible tenant can have an accident, so anything that is important to you should be removed from the property. Everybody lives different lifestyles: some people prefer crisp, clean lines with no clutter and immaculate surroundings, whilst others can be, well, a little messy. Every property that is rented has to be presented in a clean and tidy manner, and returned to the owner in the same condition. While most of us living in our own homes may put up with uncompleted work: for example, a wobbly toilet seat or unfinished plastering, tenants are not as forgiving. Any small jobs need to be carried out before you rent out your property; this will save you time and money in the future.

Steve Bull strikes again Gaffers v Palms 2 PALMS travelled to Gaffers, bottom of the Arona Foods Summer Pool League, only to be confronted by a hungry Wolves pack and former pro footballer Steve Bull MBE. The ex-Wolves star was capped 13 times by England, and still holds the record as the club’s top goal-scorer. He made 474 appearances and scored an incredible 306 goals in his 13 years there. Neil had asked the legend to play for Gaffers … but surely, he couldn’t be a pool shark as well? Neil saved Steve until the eighth frame, when Gaffers were already winning 6-1. Up steps Bull to face Dave from Palms 2. Was Dave gonna teach the striker a lesson? Nooo! Steve put in a winning strike for Gaffers to make it 7-1. The Team game, also won by Gaffers 55-27, included a 17 break from the Gaffer, so all 10 points went to the bottom side. Treehouse v Exiles Treehouse were again quickly out the blocks, racing into a 4-0 lead and securing the five points. Exiles were no match in the singles, but they managed to nick a frame to make the final score 7-1 after just one hour. The team game was a different story, though,
and was cagey throughout. Treehouse couldn’t really get going and the chances seemed to fall for Exiles, who made no mistake, running out easy 55-24 winners. Terrace v Hammers Hammers made the pilgrimage to the holy land of Amarilla Golf, where Adi and his faithful disciples were waiting to take on mid-table, title-contenders Hammers. The Terrace boys were in need of a win as they are in the bottom half of the division. But Hammers had different ideas, opening a 2-0 lead. And, by the end of the first set, they led 3-1.
Terrace Chris steadied the ship by winning the fifth game, and the comeback was on. Or was it? Sadly, no, and Hammers ran out 6-2 winners. Terrace Chris won both his
singles, which was pretty good considering he’d come straight off a flight and gone directly to the match. Well done Chris. The team game was dominated by the Hammers,
and a huge break of 24 points was achieved by Grandad. He then went in-off, and, but for that, the current high break of 27, held by Gaffers Neil, would probably have been beaten. Unlucky Grandad! The final team score was 5517 to the Hammers, so full points achieved. Bluebell v Palms 1 Palms picked up full points at Bluebell, with a decent 18 points coming from Palms’ Wayne. They ran out 6-2 winners in the singles and 55-7 winners in the team game. Bluebell are yet to pick up a point in the league, but they are giving it their best shot against the strong opposition found in our league. Phoenix v Dreamers Unbeaten, in-form Dreamers travelled to the Phoenix bar in search of another 10 points, having thumped Gaffers a couple of weeks ago. They were full of confidence, and immediately showed their class by winning the singles 6-2. The team game told a different story, though. Neither team achieved a high break, and the scoring was close. But Phoenix out-scored them in every round and ran out 55-43 winners for a 5-5 share of the points.
Arona Derby
Buzanada lift Cup LEAGUE form counted for nothing as Buzanada won the Copa Heliodoro Cup on Wednesday night after a penalty shoot-out.
Ibarra are flying high in third place in the same Tercera division as the victors, but Buzanada hungered for a win from their third final appearance in four years. The Arona derby was transported to Santa Cruz, and the match pulled in 1,500 people in the vast Heliodoro stadium, home of CD Tenerife. Ibarra shuffled
their pack at half-time with a double substitution and Balduino, with fresh legs, had two good chances. But he found Buzanada keeper Gabri at his best. Samuel had the clearest chance for Buzanada, but Edwin in the Ibarra goal denied him. Even the penalties struggled to separate the two sides. The teams hit a perfect five each, before carrying on until Borjita got the winner after an Ibarra miss by Aaron Darias, to win the prized trophy for Buzanada.

Betting Barton banned JOEY Barton, the sometimes-reckless Burnley player, has been suspended from football, and any activity concerning the sport, for 18 months.
The 34-year-old midfielder, who had previously admitted an FA misconduct charge in relation to betting, was also fined £30,000 and warned about his future conduct. Burnley say the player plans to appeal the sentence. A statement released on the FA website read: “It was alleged that between 26th March 2006 and 13th May 2016, he placed 1,260 bets on the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of, or occurrence in, football matches or competitions, in breach of FA Rule E8. “Following the Independent Regulatory Commission hearing, the Burnley midfielder was also fined £30,000 and warned as to his future conduct. “Written Reasons will follow in due course.” Barton, who admits that the suspension may force him into early retirement from the game, provided a list of some of the “most pertinent” bets he had made on his website He listed 30 bets, including one on himself as the first
goalscorer in a match. But, responding in a lengthy statement on his personal website, Barton said he was “very disappointed at the harshness of the sanction”. He added: “The decision effectively forces me into an early retirement from playing football. I accept that I broke the rules governing professional footballers, but I do feel the penalty is heavier than it might have been for other less controversial players.” He added: “As for the scale of my football betting, since 2004, on a Betfair account

La Laguna graduate
WINNERS are springing up all across Tenerife sport. Latest to join the club are CRULL La Laguna Rugby Union team, who have clinched the Liga Territorial Canarias Championship.
The club, who play at the La Laguna University ground, just beyond Santa Cruz, have had a successful season, culminating in a 23-22 victory over Gran Canaria. The multi-national side now await the promotion-phase draw, which could lead them into Spain’s national league.
held in my own name, registered at my home address and verified by my own passport, with full transparency, I have placed over 15,000 bets across a whole range of sports. “Just over 1,200 were placed on football, and subject to the charges against me. The average bet was just over £150; many were for only a few pounds. “For the modern footballer, downtime and rest are important, and I spend much of my time away from training in front of a TV screen, channel-hopping
across a range of sports, and betting on the outcome of games. “I like watching sports and predicting the outcome. Set alongside what we are privileged to earn as footballers, my betting stakes are relatively small. “Betting for me is less about how much money I win or lose, and more about whether I can correctly predict the outcome of the game I’m watching. “I hate losing more than I like winning, and this mindset has helped prevent me from placing big bets,
for fear of losing big.” He added: “One thing I can state with absolute certainty is that I have never placed a bet against my own team when in a position to influence the game, and I am pleased that in all of the interviews with the FA, and at the hearing, my integrity on that point has never been in question. “I could not live with myself, nor face my team-mates or the fans of the clubs I played for, if they seriously thought I would bet on my team to lose a game whose outcome I could influence.”
Women’s Indoor Volleyball
Arona champions welcomed
AS a game it was a formality for already-promoted Arona Tenerife Sur. But as a celebration, their last home game, against Covadonga, was a chance to wallow in their hard-earned glory. Next season, they play on a national stage in the Superliga Feminina, after signing off with a 3-2 victory against the visitors from Asturias.
But Covadonga made sure their hosts had to play well to clinch the play-off championship. The sets went 25-22, 20-25, 25-22, and 23-25, before the tie-break settled the issue at 16-14 in Arona’s favour. Next season, the club will be involved in far more travelling, and, obviously, greater expense. But top-level volleyball will shine the spotlight on Arona and the Los Cristianos sports hall, and this should entice bigger crowds and, hopefully, more players taking up the sport.

CD Tenerife
Last-gasp let-down By Colin Kirby
REGRETS have no place in Tenerife’s master-plan, and surrendering the lead in the last minute of time added on was a mere hiccup. All their promotion rivals dropped points, which enabled Tenerife to remain in third place with just seven regular games remaining before the playoffs. Raul Camara was suspended, so a shuffle put Carlos Ruiz in central defence, with Jorge moving to rightback, where he looked uncomfortable. But it could have been a dream start as Suso put an excellent ball through to Choco Lozano, who beat the offside trap and the keeper, only to knock the ball a fraction wide. Aaron was in good form down the left flank, his speed and eye for an opening keeping Numancia on their toes as he forced a couple of fruitless corners. Numancia, still needing points to ensure their survival in the division,
Numencia 1 CD Tenerife 1
were keen to get their status settled and took control. A home corner flew over defenders and forwards in the box and went out of play, and a free-kick over the Tenerife wall sounded a further warning. Dani Hernandez on top
Ladies’ Football
of his game, thwarted the home side’s best efforts with a superb, full-length diving save, followed by an acrobatic stretch to deflect the ball away. Into the second half and the story was much the same. Aaron had the beating of his marker but
skewed his shot over the bar, while Camille’s timely intervention halted a home raid. Tenerife were giving away too many free-kicks by rushing into tackles, and a stupid push on an opponent by Carlos Ruiz was one of the more glaring examples. Tenerife had half a shout for a penalty, a ball across the box catching a Numancia defender. But it was more ball-to-hand rather than a deliberate handball. Gutierrez dribbled through the Tenerife defence, turned and fired, but, thankfully, the finish was far less impressive than the build-up. Lozano is a deceptive player, his relaxed style sometimes earning him criticism. But he was strong enough to shrug off a defender leaning on him as he headed Aaron’s inchperfect cross into the net for the lead. That didn’t save him from being replaced soon after by Omar, while Gaku Shibasaki had previously
taken to the pitch to replace Suso. The game was at 11am, which meant the Japanese player had many extra eyes on him as the game was shown back home. Aitor Sanz picked up a yellow card for a clumsy foul, taking him to another suspension, and Dani Hernandez added an edgeof-the-box save to his day’s tally. Tenerife appeared to be cruising to victory, but they switched off too soon. In the final minute of regular time, they had a two-onone break, but were too casual and failed to deliver a testing shot. Then Jorge made a rash challenge to concede a freekick. The ball was swung into the penalty area and Dani Calvo outjumped the Tenerife defence to plant the ball in the back of the net. Coach Pep Marti didn’t look best-pleased at the postmatch press conference, yet the overall picture is still rosy. However, success at UCAM Murcia tomorrow (Saturday) would still be much-appreciated.
CD Marino
Sunk, in a goal scramble
Oh no… oh brother! CD Marino 3 Union Sur Yaiza 3
F RU S T R A T I NG just about sums up a win-less weekend for Tenerife’s two teams in Spain’s Ladies Premier League. Just one goal between them, and that was in the wrong net! Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife were at Oiartzun, in San Sebastian. And, despite having plenty of the play, they went down 1-0 in bizarre circumstances. A ball into the box after 35 minutes caused confusion. Keeper Noelia flapped and missed, and, in the ensuing melee, Pisco put
the ball in her own net. There was no way back for Granadilla, and it went down as a rare defeat. But they are still sixth in the league. Back home in La Laguna, bottom-placed Tacuense had that sinking feeling again as they lost 2-0 against Rayo Vallecano. It has been a punishing season for the team, and they conceded goals in each half, from Mendi in the 19th minute, and Laurita after 55 minutes. This Sunday, Granadilla have one of their biggest home games, against the powerful Valencia team. Kick-off at El Medano is at noon.
NOT quite the Nevilles or the Charltons, but the Yaiza brothers Yunes will always stick in the memory of CD Marino after they ganged up for two injury-time goals to tie the match in Lanzarote.
Marino worked hard and Mendi opened the scoring after 27 minutes. And, with home player Pineiro getting a straight red just eight minutes later, the omens were good. Amed made it 2-0 as the second half got underway, and Marino must have thought the points were in the bag. But Yaiza reduced the arrears soon afterwards through Alex. But Marino were hungry for the win against a team just above them in the table, and Lolo opened the
two-goal gap again. And, with the seconds ticking away, Marino dared to think they had finished off their hosts. In an incident-filled game with a rash of bookings, the ref took the game beyond the 90 minutes and Yaiza hit back. Marino sub Borja fouled Miguel Yunes in the
box and brother Alex fired in the penalty in the 94th minute. A further minute stretched Marino´s nerves and Miguel Yunes popped up with a header just before the final whistle. This Sunday, sixth-placed CD Marino are at home to San Mateo at noon.
