Big facelift for Arona roads
Arona Mayor Jose Julian Mena (centre) keeps an eye on proceedings
ARONA Council’s Construction and Infrastructure Department is tackling an overhaul of the municipality’s streets and pavements, which will land the Town Hall with a bill of more than seven million euros.
It is Arona’s largest project of this kind in recent years and will, eventually, restore 44 streets, roads and pathways in the towns and neighbourhoods.
Continued from front
The scheme is the first phase of the #AronaAvanza plan, which is being promoted by Arona Mayor José Julián Mena, and covers the improvement of the municipality’s entire infrastructure. This construction work involves an investment of 1.3m euros in the towns of Guaza, Costa del Silencio, El Fraile, Los Cristianos, Chayofa, Buzanada, Arona town, La Sabinita, Cabo Blanco, Valle San Lorenzo, La Camella and Tunisia. It will add to work that has already been carried out as part of an asphalting plan, in which 15 roads have been
restored at a cost of 528,863 euros. By the end of the project’s second phase, around 60 roads and footpaths will have been resurfaced, and Mayor Mena said: “Without a doubt, the state of the roads and streets of Arona is one of our main problems. “That is why we decided it was fundamental to promote a plan to resurface the roads in the municipality completely, to improve the life and safety of its residents.” He added: “It was a priority, and we are fulfilling our commitments.”
Paedo jailed for seven years Kids denounce Santa Cruz Provincial Court found the man guilty after hearing of the overwhelming evidence found in his home: some 80,000 child pornographic files, compiled from 2009 until the moment of his arrest last year. There was other evidence proving that the man, identified only as M.A.M., had distributed at least 550 of these videos and photographs to other users, via exchange programmes such as Emule or uTorrent. The National Police child pornography unit had knowledge of several files, circulating the web, with high paedophile content.
And investigators identified an address in the South of Tenerife which pertained to the defendant, who had previously been convicted for similar crimes. During the court case, he admitted to downloading pornography “occasionally”, for his own use. And when he was arrested, he said he was depressed because of relationship issues, which is why he also drank alcohol. He confessed that he had been abused as a child, which, he said, might have explained his behaviour. The man added that he was willing to receive psychological treatment.
‘cruel’ parents
A TEENAGE sister and brother, aged 15 and 14 respectively, have denounced their adoptive parents to Local Police in La Laguna for mistreatment. The 15-year-old girl told officers that she even tried to commit suicide by swallowing soap last December. She said the pair of them had both suffered abuse for
about nine years, and that they were forced to tell the police because they could no longer put up with it. It began, said the girl, the day after they arrived from the Ukraine, when they were beaten for taking an orange without permission. It continued with insults and punishments, which changed over the years. Initially, though, they were locked in a dirty, dark room, naked with just water and no food, or even access to the bathroom. As a little girl, she recalled
that if she urinated a little on the floor, her adoptive father would grab her by her neck and rub her face in the urine. Because of the severity of the allegations, the man and woman were told that the children were being sent to an Immediate Care Centre as a precautionary measure. In addition, the parents were charged with coercion, illegal detention, mistreatment and harassment, within the field of domestic violence.

NATIONWIDE taxes on sugary drinks, and an “environmental” levy, will be applied if Spain believes it is incapable of meeting its national-debt target this year. But Catalunya has already jumped the gun! Extra duty on soft drinks there have been imposed via a law passed unilaterally by the north-eastern region’s own Parliament. It does not affect the rest of Spain, even though the idea has been discussed by the Government for months. Spain has been ordered by Brussels to cut its deficit to 3.1% of its GDP, which means that if the Gross Domestic Product rises, the debt goes down. But if it falls, the debt becomes larger and the government must introduce these taxes. Its four-year plan will involve clawing back some half-abillion euros overall: 300m euros in “green” tax, and 200m from a soft-drink levy. But the Government is at pains to point out that this will be introduced as a contingency measure only, rather than being applied automatically, as was the idea for this year originally. The debt-reduction plan presented to Brussels, which covers the 2017-2020 period, also refers to tackling tax

Sugar solution to ‘debt’ target is a bitter pill “They are the best results on record, and that encourages us to continue working hard.” fraud. Part of this could mean that companies and the self-employed might, eventually, have to present their IVA (IGIG) declarations two-monthly rather than quarterly, to enable the taxman to keep a closer check on their accounts. Also, payments in cash will no longer be able to exceed 1,000 euros, instead of the current 2,500 sum. The measures, if necessary, are expected to be approved over the course of 2017, and should generate an estimated surplus of 1.8bn euros.
Mariano Rajoy Ministers expect the GDP to grow from 1.9% in 2016 to 2% this year and 2.1% in 2018, remaining as such until 2020 inclusive. Each year’s 0.1% increase means an additional 1bn euros in gross domestic product for the country as a whole, based upon the 2016 overall sum of 21.53bn euros. The government has spoken of “increasing sustainable investment”, which, for this year (and next, at least), will have to include 3.5bn euros” to ‘buy back’ motorways run by loss-making toll companies.
In fact, firms responsible for maintaining eight tollfunded motorways are actually in receivership. The government expects to spend 0.8% less on pensions, with overall expenditure on retirement funds dropping from the 25.4% of the GDP in 2013 to 25% in 2020 and 23.5% in 2030. This is based largely on certain forecasts, including the pension reform and retirement age gradually rising from the current age of 67 for the majority of workers. Pension reforms have saved
the government 1bn euros over the last year, and will save a further 1.15bn this year and 1.2bn in 2018. Overall, a total of just over 4.8bn will be saved through taxes and 4.54bn in employment, social security and State expenditure. The public accounts overcame the first hurdle in their passage through Parliament, and, said Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy: “This gives stability and conveys confidence. If we do things well, economic growth and job creation will continue in Spain.” He described the figures as “wonderful”, adding: “They are the best results on record, and that encourages us to continue working hard.” And Rajoy, without absolute belief, reiterated his offer to engage in dialogue with all the political groups. “We are talking with everyone, but there are some parties that haven’t even wanted to sit down with us,” he said. “They haven’t wanted to participate, which is their right.” However, Spain’s President insisted he will try to push through the public accounts with the largest number of votes. He stressed: “Things are going well and must get even better. The key is to approve the Budget with the broadest possible consensus.”
Long arm of the Law reaches out
LOCAL Police in Arona are collaborating with the Guardia Civil to increase the presence of the Law in Costa del Silencio, Las Galletas and El Fraile. It’s a move to combat the increase in robberies and muggings, denounced by residents in these areas. Arona Council says that since last December,
there have been seven joint police patrols, along with the special operation carried out by the National Police Prevention Unit (UPP) in the streets, commercial areas and squares and parks. And Arona Police Councillor Carolina Reverón has highlighted how well the collaboration between the different security forces is working, as well as the Local Police involvement to ensure security in the municipality.
Easter jobs’ boost WITH April encompassing the Easter period, it was a particularly good month for the Spanish employment sector. The number of people filing jobless claims went down by 129,281, the biggest drop for a single month in the entire historical series. The previous record was registered in June 2013.
The total number of people without a job now stands at 3.57 million, according to the Labour Ministry. Meanwhile, the employed figure grew by 212,216, as measured by the Social Security department. This brings to 18.12m, the total number of contributors to the national welfare system. The Easter holidays always mean increased hiring, in tourist destinations particularly, and especially when they
occur during Holy Week. Employment grew in all areas, particularly in the hospitality sector, where 96,069 new jobs were added. The unemployment rate in Spain is around 18.7%, down from the high of 27% in 2013, when the country was in the grip of a crippling economic crisis. But despite a recovery and good growth forecasts, Spain still has the secondhighest jobless rate in the EU after Greece.

Schoolkids run a Co-op society THE first Los Cristianos School Cooperative Fair offered visitors a wide variety of items from which to choose, including hand-made crafts created from recycled materials.
Also on display were bookmarks, portfolios, pictures, notebooks, candles, locks, brooches, speakers made from plastic cups - and even vegetables from their organic gardens. A total of 20 stands were set up in front of Los Cristianos Cultural Centre, with 423 participating students from schools in Arona, San Miguel, Granadilla, Guía de Isora and Santiago del Teide, accompanied by 90 teachers. The students were selling their hand-made products, at symbolic prices, for a good cause because a
percentage of the profits will be donated to nonprofit organisations. The remainder will go towards recreational activities for the participating students and their schools. The fair was intended to enable students to learn the art of entrepreneurship, from a positive point of view, “without fear of failure”, as underlined by the organisers, whose object was to instil values such
as responsibility, solidarity, friendship, teamwork, and, above all, creativity. The Cabildo, Arona Town Hall and La Laguna University have all collaborated to boost the exercise. “Teach to Learn”, is the name of the project, being run by various municipalities on the island, which shows school-children how a business is created, how to get financing, how to run
the administrative procedures and how to advertise. After visiting various stands, Arona Mayor José Julián Mena highlighted “the collective work between the students, the ability they have demonstrated with their handmade products and, above all, the solidarity they have shown by donating the funds to charities”. Leopoldo Benjumea, the Cabildo’s Minister of Employment, emphasised: “Planting an entrepreneurship seed in primary school and high-school students means that, in 15 years, there will be a group of young people with business initiative, eager to generate projects.” Finally, Julio Brito, manager of the General Foundation of La Laguna University, said: “I am delighted to be able to collaborate with this type of social initiative, and shareworking methods.”

Beached! Skyfall at Los Cristianos PA R A C H U T I S T S poured down on the sand as a majestic cruise-liner nestled in the bay of Las Vistas beach in Los Cristianos.
But something was not quite right as a lone skydiver veered out over the water and splashed into the sea between the MS Deutschland ship, and the rock-and-concrete-slab breakwater. A lifeguard mounted his surf board and paddled, face down, to intercept and help the parachutist. It was all very James Bond for a quiet Sunday afternoon, but the 11 sky divers were neither shaken nor stirred, and their wayward colleague was more embarrassed than endangered. It was all part of a change of plan for a group of adrenaline junkies, whose gig on the island of El Hierro had been cancelled. Tim Aldridge, with 200 jumps under his belt, was chilling on the promenade with a cold beer after the excitement, still sporting his T-shirt for the 22nd
international concentration of parachutists on the smallest of the Canary Islands. “There were 26 of us in our group this year,” he said. “We dropped the Gran Canaria party off on our way here from El Hierro in our
Marijuana plants grown on terrace
sponsored military plane. “The low cloud in El Hierro meant only low jumps of around 3,000-4,000ft, rather than the usual 13,00015,000ft, so we opted for a scaled-down version in Tenerife. “It was pre-arranged with
the local authorities, and we had the back of the beach as our set target. We did a 3,000ft ‘Pop and Drop’, which means a quick deployment of the parachute, rather than drifting down freely for the first part.” He added: “Our guys are all experienced, but one made a slight misjudgement and had an early bath.” The Canary Islands are extremely popular for adventure sports, particularly parachuting and hang-gliding. And, as well as El Hierro, there is a big festival in Los Realejos, in the north of Tenerife, and brightly col-
oured chutes floating serenely down can often be seen against the normallyblue Canarian skies. The equipment is amazingly compact, as the team demonstrated, folding and shrinking their kit into backpacks little bigger than some people’s packed-lunch holders. It all made for a spectacular show for enthralled onlookers. The cruise ship was not an official extra, but it showed impeccable timing for its brief call. The MS Deutschland, a 10deck, 520-passenger ship, was on a round cruise from Hamburg and back to Bremerhaven with calls at Portsmouth. Lisbon, Agadir, La Palma, El Hierro, Lanzarote, Funchal. Porto, and Saint Marie. The passengers had just a few hours to enjoy the charms of Los Cristianos. But, after their actiontaster, they couldn’t wait to pop ashore in the mini-pod shuttles. If you want to view the spectacular descent, check out Tim Aldrige’s Go Pro helmet-cam footage on the Canarian Weekly Facebook page.
Chayofita walkway gets the green light
THE National Police Prevention Unit found 34 marijuana plants growing on an apartment terrace in Avenue Chitchat, Los Cristianos.
Police identified the owner as a 35-year-old Italian man, following a complaint a few days earlier by several neighbours, through their Community officials, that there was a large number of the plants in plain sight on the man’s terrace, which emitted a strong smell. He was issued a warning only, because police could not prove he was involved in drug-trafficking. But the Italian was told that “the illicit consumption or possession of toxic drugs, narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances, even if they were not intended to be sold, in public places”, was considered a serious offence. An administrative file, which has been opened against him, could lead to him being fined.
ARONA Council has completed plans for the new pedestrian walkway project, which will cross Avenida Chayofita in Los Cristianos. It will replace the current
structures, which have deteriorated and do not comply with accessibility and safety regulations. José Julián Mena, the Arona Mayor, says the project will be put to tender in the coming weeks, with a 747,000euro budget and a fourmonth construction period.
The new footbridge will link both sides of the Avenida Chayofita dual carriageway, up to the Jesús Domínguez sports complex. Mena said: “It is fundamental for Arona to have a decent overpass, in good condition, which is also accessible to disabled people.”

Police training pays dividends
Thieves call the tune at phone warehouse THIEVES broke into a Malaga warehouse and helped themselves to quality mobile phones, worth around 800,000 euros in total. Police said an estimated 18,000 phones were loaded on to a lorry, which sped out of the industrial estate where they were housed. And the gang, while going about their business in the warehouse, destroyed CCTV cameras, and took
their time to steal the most valuable mobile-phone brands, such as Apple and Samsung, etc. The robbery occurred in the wake of Malaga Council’s approval of plans to spend more than 280,000 euros to position 29 CCTV cameras in the main industrial estates. A further 46 cameras will then be added, in an effort to prevent exactly this type of robbery.
People flood San Isidro to honour their patron saint
ARONA Local Police have detected more than 150 fake and falsified car documents, and many identity thefts, in the past three years. Since their training began
in 2013, they have also recovered vehicles, which were stolen in several European countries. Officers have had forensicdocument training to detect these types of crime, which is seen as essential in a municipality with residents from over 100 different countries.
It’s a complicated procedure because the documentation is different for individual countries’ vehicles and drivers. But Arona cops have been trained specifically to identify fake passports, visas, driving licences, ID cards and vehicle documentation.
Airport’s bomb alert was a drunken hoax TENERIFE’S South Airport, one of the busiest in Spain, received a bomb threat on Tuesday from a telephone caller, who said an explosive device had that been planted inside the building. Airport officials activated security procedures as a precaution, even though they suspected it to be a hoax because of the caller’s babbling manner. Security forces began an immediate investigation to uncover the man’s identity, and police officers soon discovered and arrested a drunkard. According to sources, the man, while under the influence of alcohol, thought it was a great idea.

SAN Isidro residents, by tradition, took to the streets to pay homage to their patron saint, San Isidro Labrador, on the first weekend in May. They assembled in front of the hermitage, one of the oldest temples in the South, dating back to the late 17th century, depositing their offerings, to the town’s muchrevered saint. This year’s 40th anniversary festivities took place in the sunshine, with more animals than usual, especially cattle and goats, enjoying the pleasant, not-too-hot
temperature. They were joined by folk groups, who provided the traditional rhythm that the colourful Canarian Romerias (Pilgrimages) bring. The adult and children queens, along with the rest of the candidates, led the lively group of participants who, in the midst of a fun atmosphere, covered the planned route to the hermitage. Once the pilgrimage was over, the image of San Isidro Labrador was taken back to the church, where it will remain until next Monday (15th May), which is the patron saint’s day. A procession is scheduled for the previous night, accompanied by a firework display.

How companies can maximise potential ADEJE Council, via its Economic Development and Employment Department, is staging a series of one-off training units to help local companies achieve their full potential. The courses will be run under the Impyme Adeje umbrella, which helps the borough’s commercial network. The courses, lasting one to two hours, are designed to help in the presentation of the small businesses and their products, and also to improve client loyalty. Councillor Manuel Luis Méndez Martín, in charge of the project, said: “We believe that these kind of classes, adaptable in content and
THE Troya Beach Tourism Information Office has been awarded the “Q for Quality” certificate for the ninth consecutive year.
The qualification is judged by the ICTE, the Spanish institute for quality tourism. Ermitas Moreira García, Adeje Council’s Tourism Councillor, said: “We have received this certificate following a vigorous audit carried out by AENOR, the company charged to control quality management systems, which recognised the excellent management and service this tourism office gives to all those who visit it.” There are three tourism information offices in the
duration, are of interest to the small-and-medium business sector locally, and will have a positive effect to help improve our commercial outlets. “A small business can not only improve its sales, but also its image and relationship with its customers.” The four units on offer to the sector, this month and next, will deal with corporative image and package (25th May, 7pm), merchandising (1st June, 7pm), windowdressing (8th June, 10am) and shop interiors (15th June, 10am). Anyone wishing to take part in the courses must register in advance, and more information is available on www.adeje.es/adejeimpulsa. All courses will take place in Costa Adeje’s Tourism Development Centre (CDTCA).
Troya Beach offering Quality service again borough: one in the centre of Adeje town, at the top of the Calle Grande, which opened four years ago; another by Fañabe beach, which has been helping members of the public for 14 years, and the third one is the Troya beach office, in place there for 19 years. The latter has been granted this certificate year after year. And, said Councillor García: “The other two offices offer the same information.” Apart from offering visitors information about Adeje borough, and other
parts of Tenerife, the offices also operate a complaints and suggestions service for any tourists wishing to offer opinions about any aspects of their stay here. The Troya office deals with the greatest number of visits - over 81,000 last year, the majority of them British, followed by Germans, Spanish, French and others. The most frequent requests were for maps and street directions, followed by information on public transport, leisure, visits to Teide, cultural events,
rambles, beaches - and the weather! Councillor García said the attention offered by the information offices easily met the basic requirements laid down by the ICTE, and the accolade received by Troya has been awarded to just five offices overall in the Canary Islands. All offices are subject to annual audits, rating personnel, information technology and access to those with mobility challenges, etc. The availability of pamphlets/ information on events and leisure centres is also important.
Last year, the Fañabe office welcomed almost 30,000 clients, with similar requests: maps and directions, public transport, information about Teide, leisure pursuits, rambling and cultural events. As in Troya the majority of those seeking information were British, followed by Germans and Spanish. In the Adeje town office, the requests followed a similar pattern, but staff there also welcomed a majority of German visitors, followed by British, French, Spanish, Nordic, Italians and Russians.

Suspicions arose after the infant’s intensive scan at Alicante General Hospital, where staff found numerous injuries in different stages of healing. The judge said the pair took advantage of the victim’s age, and his “inability to resist or defend himself”, to cause numerous traumas. The couple, from Torrellano, near Alicante Airport, have also been banned from seeing or communicating with their child for 7½ years, and have been ordered to pay 2,670 euros in compensation.

Eurovision 2017
Karma could settle it
By Robin Elliot IT’S that time of year again! Yes, tomorrow night (Saturday), millions of us will be drinking ourselves into oblivion while seated in front of the telly, commenting on over three hours of mostlyawful songs from countries around Europe and beyond. And we’ll all be asking ourselves: “Why did Graham Norton end up with the commentary gig?” Love it or hate it, we all have our views, and we do want to know who will win the Eurovision Song Contest 2017! I know we can rule out Lucie Jones’ UK entry, but wouldn’t it be great if it did win? After all, it’s 20 years since Katrina & Her Waves were Shining Their Light across Europe and giving us a winning song! Maybe it’s just coincidence, but I see Katrina has released a Greatest Hits album in time for Eurovision! Right, enough of this nostalgia …we are off to the International Exhibition Centre in Kyiv this year, following the Ukraine’s 2016 triumph, with Jamala’s historical, political tribute to her great grandmother. This year, for the first time, the contest will be hosted by an all-male trio: three comedians/TV presenters with names I can’t possibly pronounce. Also, it is only the second time since 1956 that Eurovision will not feature a female presenter! France, Germany, UK, Italy and Spain qualify automatically, regardless of their positions last year, because they always throw plenty of money into the contest. Ukraine also gain a place in the final as host nation and current champions. Here are the 2017 frontrunners: Italy: Francesco Gabbani (pictured top) is favourite to win with his catchy Occidentali’s Karma. This song features guitars, violins and a dancing Gorilla! Italy has taken home the crown twice, but can they score a hat-trick? Bulgaria: 17-year-old Kristian Kostov, a runner-up on X Factor Bulgaria, has been proving quite popular with the pop ballad Beautiful Mess. Sweden: The Swedes have won twice in the last five years, and five times in all. And, thanks to ABBA, they can claim the most successful Eurovision act of all time. Sweden is represented by Robin Bengtsson, who came third in Swedish Idol 2008, and his I Can’t Go On
song originally featured the F-word in the chorus, but he has since cleaned it up! Belgium: Blanche, who competed on the country’s version of The Voice last year, sounds as though she is doing a bad Adele impression! She’s a scary-looking teenager with a strange, electronic song called City Lights. Portugal: They’ve not got through to the Grand Final since 2010, but this might change with Salvador Sobral’s Amar Pelos Dois (which means for the both of us). This soppy ballad was written by his sister, Luisa. Portugal are the longestrunning contestants never to have won the competition, having placed highest back in 1966 when they came sixth. Australia: Isaiah, another 17-year-old, won The X Factor Australia last year, but Don’t Come Easy is nowhere as near as good as Dami Im’s 2016 entry. Armenia: Artsvik was a contestant on The Voice Russia, and the song Fly With Me is actually very good and could be a hit. Ukraine: The Ukranians have decided to rock it up this year with a track called Time from O.Torvald. It’s a pretty awful track and the band perform with countdown clocks that seem to be embedded in their skin. But this could be quite useful to countdown to the end of the song, or time for your toilet break. Germany: Levina’s a singer/ songwriter, currently studying at the London College of
Music. Her Eurovision entry sounds a bit like it was made in the Nineties, but it’s not bad! Spain: Manel Navarro is this year’s controversial entry. The Spanish claim that the contest was rigged to get Manel to represent his country, because he actually came third in the popular vote but first in the judges’ vote. And one of those judges just happened to be one of his mates! The Spanish song is a strange one, with a chorus that keeps repeating Do It For Your Lover. Spain have taken the Eurovision title twice since their first contest, in 1961. France: The French offering has also caused some controversy because Eurovision bosses discovered that the track had been performed prior to the September 2016 submission deadline, which apparently is a big No-No. Alma first shot to fame in France with a song dedicated to her dead, childhood friend. Her Eurovision song is called Requiem. UK: This year, former X Factor finalist Lucie Jones (pictured bottom) will represent the UK with a big, theatrical ballad called Never Give Up On You. The song definitely suits Lucie’s voice. But, sadly, it’s not a Eurovision winner. Anyway, do you remember Lucie from X Factor? She was voted off the show after losing to Jedward in a singoff! Not a great moment in one’s career, but the girl can sing and act. She has played Cosette in the West End production of Les Miserables, has appeared in the musical version of American Psycho, has played Molly in a Chinese tour of Ghost The Musical and played the lead role in the Legally Blonde UK tour, as well as touring in Rent. Lucie also appeared in an episode of Midsomer Murders. Good luck to all the acts taking part in Eurovision tomorrow… and may the best song win!

Columbus ship anchor is ‘found’ in Caribbean
AN anchor, believed to be from one of the ships in the Christopher Columbus fleet, has been unearthed, alongside centuriesold Mallorcan pottery, in the Caribbean. It is estimated to weigh between 1,200-1,500lbs, which indicates it was a “bower” anchor from a 300ton vessel, that was the typical size of a ship in his era. Broken pottery, an olive jar and pot from Mallorca were also found, which date the wreck from between 1492
and the early 1500s. The discoveries will be revealed in the next episode of the Discovery Channel’s Cooper’s Treasure docuseries. Historical, shipwreck-discovery specialist Darrell Miklos, who led the Caribbean expedition, is adamant that the anchor was, indeed, attached to a Columbus ship. “This is just the beginning of an amazing story,” he said, excitedly. Miklos used a space treasure map, created by NASA Astronaut Gordon Cooper, his late friend, to find a series of Caribbean shipwreck sites.
The new discovery, off the Turks and Caicos islands, is believed to be linked to Vicente Yanez Pinzon, a Sevillan sailor who was part of the Columbus expeditions. Pinzon was captain of the Nina on Columbus’ first voyage in 1492. And in 1499 and 1500, he discovered Brazil and the Amazon River. But in July of that last year, his fleet was caught in a hurricane while anchored near the Turks and Caicos islands. It completely wrecked two of his ships, and, it is believed, the anchor is from one of them.

Eight people escape from blaze building A MAN and woman were rescued by fire-fighters from a blaze in a Tacoronte apartment block, in the north-east of Tenerife, on Sunday afternoon. The fire affected eight people in all, but, once the couple were saved, the stairwell was then ventilated and another six managed to escape. Paramedics took a 60-yearold man to the Canarian University Hospital with burns on various parts of his body. Another ambulance, along with
help from the medical centre staff, assisted the other injured people: two women, aged 32 and 56, and three men, aged 20, 52 and 39. They were all suffering from smoke inhalation, although no one needed further medical treatment. The authorities are still investigating the fire’s origin, but all the residents in the building have now returned to their homes, apart from residents in the property which caught fire, because the damage was too severe.
Another violent Fañabe robbery NATIONAL Police are investigating a violent robbery, which took place in Fañabe on Monday morning and was the third in that area recently. Thieves broke into a property in the absence of its owner, helping themselves to jewellery and a video console. Minutes later, the 67-yearold householder returned and noticed that the door lock was broken. When he pushed the door open, one of the
thieves punched him in the face and the pensioner fell to the ground, unconscious. The gang fled and the victim was unable to give police more than scant details about their appearance, or what they were wearing, partly because he had suffered facial injuries. Forensic police searched the property for evidence that might help them identify the robbers, but the case is still open.

Geoff Cotton, RIP (10-11-1951 to 03-05-2017)
IN loving memory of Geoff, who died on Wednesday, 3rd May, and leaves two daughters, Charlotte & Abby, stepson Josh and wife Maxine, together with five beautiful grandchildren and No.6 due in July. He moved to Tenerife with Maxine and Josh after they married in 2003, and felt he had found his Utopia. Geoff was an avid Man Utd & NFL fan, but had also been a talented rugby player with a promising future, playing for Salford until an injury put a stop to it. He died peacefully in Hospiten Sur after a short illness, and the family thank all the team in ICU enormously for never giving up on him. The support and love from so many people has been overwhelming, and there is a memorial next Saturday (20th May), from 1.30pm, at the Soul Lodge in Pueblo Canario, with his favourite Northern Soul music. And all are welcome.
Smart youngsters are life-saver for podenco A GROUP of quickthinking La Laguna youngsters saved a podenco from killing itself on Tuesday afternoon, after realising it was going to jump from a second-floor apartment window. They spotted the hunting animal as they strolled along Heraclio Sánchez street, in the heart of the university municipality, and were
able to catch it in a blanket. Local Police at the
scene traced its owner, who had rescued the dog recently from Teide National Park, where he found it abandoned and starving. The police ecological division went a step further and located the dog’s original owner. Now, officers want to know just why the dog had been dumped, and was extremely malnourished.

Hair-raising hairballs THERE'S nothing quite like the feeling of stepping out of your warm bed onto a cold, squishy, slimey hairball! Perhaps we should feel flattered that our feline companion has left a special gift for us, but, frankly, most of us would rather bond with our cats in another way! Causes When cats groom dead, loose hair, it passes through the digestive tract and comes out in the stool. A carnivore's gut is designed to handle its own fur, as well as that of any prey. However, generations of
breeding have created cats with longer coats, and when too much hair collects in the stomach, it irritates the lining and whoops - there's a hairball. While an occasional hairball is no cause for alarm, if your cat is vomiting hairballs more than twice a month, start with a trip to your vet to ensure that there are no underlying health issues. Assuming there aren't, then what next? Prevention Combing is often all it takes to resolve the problem. A fine-toothed flea comb is
best, but longer hair may require a wide-toothed one. Many cats will try to selfmedicate by eating grass. The coarse plant fibres will cause the cat to vomit, and, hopefully, include the irritating hair. Treatment This falls into two categories; adding fibre to the diet, or giving a lubricant. The latter can be given plain, as in good old Vaseline, or a commercial product. Petroleum jelly's molecules are too large to be absorbed by the intestines, so it passes through the cat and is perfectly safe. Hairball “treats” contain mineral oil rather than petroleum jelly. They work on the same principle, but have a slightly more laxative effect - don't overdo them! Diet There are a lot of hairballcontrol cat foods and treats. The idea is that the higher fibre content will help the hair to pass through the gastro-intestinal tract, and into the litter tray where it belongs. Kittens! Kittens are available for viewing at Vet Express behind Gran Sur, and Don
Perro in Las Chafiras. Many people don’t want black kittens, so, to encourage adoption, we arrange, free of charge, the vaccination, microchip and neutering of black kittens. If two kittens are adopted together, of any colour, we will arrange the vaccination, microchip and neutering of one kitten. Contact us via our website www.cats-welfare-tenerife. com or ring or WhatsApp Maria on 646629129, seven
days a week. Our shop Items in good condition can be dropped into the shop on San Blas in Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 106pm, Saturdays 10-4pm. Macron’s victorious, so what next for the euro? By Carol schleisman at currencies direct
THE second half of April saw the pound fall from a multimonth best of 1.1990 against the euro, but it hit a succession of new highs against dollar currencies like those of the US, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
GBP/EUR was trading in the region of 1.16 euros this time last month, but it is currently holding at 1.18. The euro, meanwhile, strengthened after the first round of the French Presidential elections, with EUR/GBP fluctuating between highs of £0.85, and lows of £0.83. The euro’s performance against the US dollar has been more impressive, with a dramatic drop-off in demand for the North American currency, causing EUR/USD to rocket from $1.05 to $1.10. Politics remained the driving force behind currency-market movement as May began. The pound was still elevated, following UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s decision to bring forward the General
Election to 8th June. The currency climbed to some of its best levels since the UK voted to exit the European Union. However, GBP/EUR gains were limited, as the euro responded positively to the outcome of the first round of the French Presidential election, which saw centrist Emmanuel Macron and farright Marine Le Pen progress to the second round. The euro continued edging gradually higher as polls gave Macron a decisive lead over his rival. After the 2016 shocks of Brexit and the US election, there had been some concerns that Le
Amateur theatre’s trio of May shows ADEJE Cultural Centre is hosting a series of amateur dramatic presentations on consecutive Friday evenings, beginning tonight (12th May).
The Creative Development/Culture Department has announced details of the V Amateur Theatre Showcase, to be staged on 12, 19 and 26th May. All plays and performances will be in Spanish. Tickets are five euros and the shows begin at 8.30pm. Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera said: “Theatre is part of our cultural and history in Adeje, and five years ago we started this project with the hope and conviction
that it should be in our annual calendar of activities. “And, indeed, over the years we have consolidated the event, which we see as adding to the value of what we can offer the community.” The programme begins tonight with the Asociación Sol y Sombra performing “Picnic”, a comedy by Fernando Arrabal (no age restrictions). Next Friday (19th May), the Asociación Cultural Cedarpre, from Guía de Isora, stages ‘Venezia’ (for over-12s). The final play is on 26th May, when Descúbrete Teatro presents “Sainete”, a series of short performances (no age restrictions).
Pen might snatch an unexpected victory and up the odds of a ‘Frexit’ (French exit from the EU) in the process. Yet polls proved accurate this time, and Macron took the Presidency with a convincing 66% of the vote. And, as the outcome was expected, the euro didn’t strengthen too much, although it did manage to achieve its best levels against the US dollar since last November. There’s now only a month to go until the UK General Election, so any forecasts relating to the outcome of the vote will be the catalyst for a GBP/EUR exchange-
rate movement. If it appears that the Conservatives will increase their majority, the pound will strengthen on hopes that PM May’s Brexit negotiating power will improve. However, GBP/EUR could drop if there are any signs that Labour support is gathering momentum (or that a coalition could be formed in order to keep the Conservatives out). The biggest causes of euro movement over the next couple of weeks include the French parliamentary elections and Eurozone inflation figures. If the rate of inflation in the currency bloc falls, it could
deter the European Central Bank (ECB) from increasing interest rates in the nearfuture, leaving the Euro under pressure. Good sex, drugs and guns were available FAKE drugs for sale on the internet were guaranteed, supposedly, to help men with sexual problems, according to the description.
They were available in packs of 10, costing 50 euros, and were described
as being helpful for erectile dysfunction, to make sex more pleasurable, or even to stop premature ejaculation. A National Police probe revealed that a Barcelonabased Georgian couple, who owned the website, were selling the so-called drug across Spain, via post or courier. But when officers raided
the couple’s property, they found much more than they had bargained for … and not just hundreds of pills! They also discovered the means of producing them, a number of false Lithuanian passports, 27 illegally-owned firearms of various types, 17 airguns and several, incomplete firearms, as well as telescopic sights.
Police catch a brutal trio, close to murder THREE men have been charged with attempted murder in Puerto de la Cruz, after handing out a brutal beating to a 49-yearold Italian man who nearly died. The incident, which took place in an abandoned building on Avenida de la Familia Bethencourt y Molina, occurred on 12th March, although it came to light on Monday only. The motive for the attack was simple: the victim had
previously been involved in an argument with the girlfriend of one of the suspects. Thanks to help from the public, National Police officers intervened quickly, saving the Italian’s life and,
not long after, arresting the three individuals, aged 44, 21 and 19, respectively. The 44-year-old has a extensive criminal record and the 21-year-old has some recorded offences, but the youngest has no criminal background. The police report stated that they used a large knife and a brick or a bottle, causing serious injury to their victim, who was rushed to the Canarian University Hospital.

A Time To Live
Weds 17th May, BBC2, 21.00 A Time To Live, from award-winning film-maker Sue Bourne, is a film about living, not dying. We hear from a variety of people who have managed to find positives in their terminal prognoses and have made the most of the time they have left. What would you do if you were told you had a terminal illness and might only have months to live? The 12 people in this thoughtprovoking and uplifting film range from their 20s to their late 60s. They speak eloquently and inspiringly about what they’ve discovered really matters in life. They smile and laugh, making the most of the precious time they have left. Thirty-year-old Fi says she would rather have a good life than a long one. Sixty-nine-year-old Kevin says he and his wife have had some of the best times of their life since his diagnosis. Lisa, who is 49, says she intends to spend her remaining time laughing and having fun. She feels like she’s been given a ‘heads up’ so that she can actually do things rather than just talk about them. Cindy says she is possibly happier now than she has ever been. And when Annabel discovered she may only have a couple of years to live, she left her husband and family. She says that cancer and a terminal diagnosis gave her the confidence to finally grasp the life she wanted.
Hosted by Graham Norton and broadcast live on BBC One, the qualifying acts from the semi-finals plus performers from Ukraine, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom, perform in the grand final of the 62nd Eurovision Song Contest from Kyiv. Ken Bruce broadcasts live for BBC Radio 2. Lucie Jones represents the UK with her beautiful song Never Give Up On You, which was co-written by 2009 winner Emmelie de Forest. The 2017 Eurovision Song Contest hosts are Oleksandr Skichko, Volodymyr Ostapchuk, and Timur Miroshnychenko. Graham Norton guides viewers throughout the night from his commentary box. Following the artists’ parade and an introduction from the hosts, the show will begin as 26 acts take to the stage in a bid for Eurovision glory. In the Grand Final, juries and viewers from all 42 participating countries can vote again, after the 26 finalists have performed. Once the voting window has closed, the presenters will call upon spokespersons in all 42 countries and ask them to reveal their jury points live on air. Next, viewers’ points from all 42 countries will be added up, and revealed from the lowest to the highest, culminating into a climax that will eventually reveal the winner of the 62nd Eurovision Song Contest. The winner will perform once again, and take home the iconic glass microphone trophy.

A successfully-fought referendum recently gave him sweeping new powers, potentially extending his Presidency until 2029. In the second and final episode of this Arabian adventure, explorer Alice Morrison is in the vast Sahara, three and a half million square miles of desert, on an epic camel trek over the dunes on her journey to Timbuktu. Alice heads West to the desert towns Tamegroute and Guelmim. Guelmim was home to Africa’s largest camel market centuries ago, supplying the merchants for their caravans across the desert. There’s still a bustling livestock market, but Alice finds only a small posse of camels. The salesmen tell her now they’re mainly sold for food. The days of majestic camel caravans are over. Border controls mean Alice must fly the last leg into Timbuktu itself on a UN flight. This ancient city was turned into one of the most dangerous places in the world after an incursion by Islamic extremists in 2012. It lasted a year, and now UN soldiers keep a fragile peace in the city, having pushed the insurgents just a few miles back into the desert. When Alice finally reaches the City of Gold, Alice relives its glorious past with a visit to its world famous mosques, the last surviving treasures of a bygone era. In the oldest of them, the Djinguereber mosque, she hears the tale of Mansa Musa, Mali’s greatest king and the richest man in history.
Kathleen (Jessie Wallace), Alfie (Shane Ritchie) and Tommy (Henry Proctor) arrive in Redwater, where celebrations are in full flow for a lively annual fundraiser, that pitches them into the heart of the community. Despite promising Alfie that she will keep a low profile Kathleen can’t rest, and is already on the hunt for her son. Andrew (Peter Campion), son of Roisin (Maria Doyle Kennedy) and Padraig (Stephen Hogan) and wife of local Garda Bernie (Susan Ateh) seems the perfect fit. Could she have found him so soon? Alfie urges caution and not to get her hopes up. But this is Kat Slater, not known for caution, and the inhabitants’ tongues start wagging and conspiracy theories form, as they wonder if The Moons really are visiting just for a holiday… As the celebrations spill into the local pub, Kathleen finds an ally in Lance (Ian McElhinney). He’s been in Redwater forever, and seems to know everyone and everything. Life and soul of the party Kathleen is in danger of exposing her identity and her secret. As Kathleen relentlessly pursues her quest for confirmation that Andrew is her long-lost son, she ruffles feathers with Andrew’s mother Roisin at their family farm, further fuelling the rumour mill - until Agnes intercepts and sends Kathleen politely on her way. Alfie once again has to play peacekeeper, pulling Kathleen into line and making peace with the locals, allowing the dust to settle. Distracted by her quest, Kat fails to notice that Alfie is hiding his failing health from her.

Stress
Back from the dark side By Carl pattison from Robot
WE all love a hair change; if it’s not the cut, then it may be the colour. Everyone loves to alter their image now and then, something which can be brought on by life events, or seasonal moods. As we age, certain things can pull us down or lift us up, and those pick-me-ups can shave off the years - or pile them on. So, what do you ladies avoid, and what do you look for, when you reach a certain age? The golden rule is NEVER go too dark, especially darker than your natural colour or present shade.
Doing so instantly draws colour from your face, as we lose this as we age. It can be counteracted by applying more makeup, but this isn’t always the best road to go down. Overly-long hair can add so many years, as can cropping it too short. We, at Robot, love to see mature
women still being able to carry off modern haircuts and colours. No one wants to look her age, yet there’s a fine line between a youthful look and trying too hard. Keep colours on the lighter side, which doesn’t mean that everyone has to be blonde, and don’t look as though you visited the barbers, either. No matter what your age, be it eighteen or eighty, we should all want to look the best version of ourselves, and this is when your trusted stylist should come in. We are not here to bully you, but to give advice as to the best cut, colour and style, so that you can still receive compliments about how you look, and for all the right reasons.
Face furniture By Carl Pattison IT’S that time of year when, if you haven’t already got them, you’d better start looking; sunglasses are not only part of your fashion wardrobe, but essential eye protection. Choosing the right style and frame is the key to getting it right, and getting it wrong is easier said than done. It’s all down to your face-shape and size, as well as personal choice and what’s fashionable at the moment. Sunglasses, if you choose them correctly, will last you for years, so it’s essential that you get it right. You don’t have to to spend
a fortune, but I don’t recommend that you opt for a cheaper variety, either. Your eyes are precious, and they need extra care, so choose a highquality UV protection to ensure ultimate sun shielding. Head for a store with a large selection, and try on as many styles as possible. Don’t be pushed into a purchase by a sales assistant; you will be wearing them for
years, so take your time. Think of your wardrobe colour scheme - the shades of your main clothing and accessories, as well as your shoes, bags, jewellery etc. Don’t opt for a vibrant colour that looks good, but won’t complement your clothes. Metallic shades are best, as are blacks, browns and whites; these will be the easiest to tie in with the rest of your image. Stay away from anything too flamboyant, as this will date rapidly; go for classics, and you will have face furniture that will last for years.

What is it? How does it affect us? How can we recognise it? What can we do about it? Stress is related to the freeze, flight or fight mode of human functioning. Obviously, everyday stress does not generally constitute activation of a full response, but the process is controlled in the same way. Stress puts us into a constant state of uncertainty, one in which we are always on “high alert”. The body is ready to jump into fight, flight or freeze mode at any time. As you can imagine, that is pretty draining on the body and mind. After time, there will be other physiological, as well as emotional side-effects such as anxiety attacks, insomnia, depression, highs and lows, loss of appetite, digestive problems, high/low blood pressure and heart problems - I could go on all day! So how do we know when we are being affected by stress, if the symptoms are so wideranging? Good question! Self-awareness is the key. The more you know about your body, the more you can recognise what is going on. Once you have recognised that you are feeling “stressed”, you can make a decision to do something about it. The most-effective methods of learning self-awareness are breathing and focusing techniques. These techniques can
be practised whilst doing everyday tasks, so they don’t take extra time out of your day. In addition, the effect of mastering a simple breathing/focusing technique can have quite profound results on your levels of stress, and your physical and emotional well-being. You may be surprised at how hard it is at first, but, once you begin to train and discipline your mind just that tiny little bit, you will notice that you feel calmer and not so “stressed”. Your mind will be clearer, you will be aware of yourself and even your memory will improve, resulting in clarity of thinking, and better decision making. Don’t believe me? Give it a go for a week or so. You can email me your findings and questions to info@charlotte-effective-therapies.com In a fortnight’s time, I will print the answers to any questions and share any informative experiences which may help others. It will be anonymous, of course, so come on, hit me! Here is a breathing/
focusing technique. It can be done anywhere; on the bus, whilst walking, in the shower, on a toilet break etc. Breathe in for the count of four seconds, hold the breath for seven seconds, and then release the breath over eight seconds. Repeat this process the amount of times as is comfortable for you. If you need to cut down the time because it feels uncomfortable, then reduce all sections by one second. Be aware of thoughts distracting you. When you realise that they have taken away your focus, bring your focus back to the counting. If you lose count, begin again. You can start off with one cycle, and when you become more familiar with it, do two or three, or however many you want. Experiment and see how easy, or not, it is to be aware! Enjoy! By Val Sainsbury WHEN you’re running out of steam and need a boost, you may think that reaching for an energy drink will sort you out.
12th May - 18th May 2017
Energy drinks harm the heart
They are all the rage these days, and estimates suggest that between 2008 and 2012, the market exploded by a staggering 60%. Nowadays, there are more than 500 energy drinks available for purchase. This particular industry has done a great
job of making their offerings seem like the “cool” beverage of choice. And, to make matters worse, they can even market their products as “supplements” rather than “beverages,” which can exempt them from needing to provide a nutrition facts label.
Some people may even incorrectly believe that these drinks are just as safe as coffee, or that they are a better option than regular soda. Even product manufacturers purport the myth that their beverages are no different than a cup of coffee. But the truth is that energy drinks are emphatically not the same as coffee or cola. A new study has emphasised this by showing that drinking just 32 ounces of energy drinks a day can cause potentiallyharmful changes to heart function and blood pressure. These changes go well beyond what caffeine can do alone. According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), doses of caffeine equivalent to 400 milligrams, or about 5 cups of coffee, are safe for human consumption. But energy drinks are notorious for containing other “proprietary energy blends,” which are often comprised of ingredients that are of a questionable nature. Little is known about the safety of these ingredients. Plus, downing several energy drinks a day, as many people do, can easily put someone well over their daily caffeine limit. Sources say that this alone can increase your risk of headaches and changes to blood pressure - never mind the issue of what
other “goodies” are put into energy drinks. Some of these drinks may have even led to fatalities. To measure the safety of these ingredients, researchers compared the physical changes observed in a group of 18 healthy men and women after they consumed a commercial energy drink. They also recorded the physical changes that were produced after the group consumed a beverage loaded with the same amount of caffeine, but none of the other ingredients featured in the energy drink. The energy drink used in the study contained 320 milligrams of caffeine, four ounces of sugar, an array of B vitamins, and a “proprietary energy blend” which consisted of taurine and other ingredients that are practically standard for these drinks. An electrocardiogram (ECG) was used to monitor the electrical activity of the participants’ hearts, during the 24-hour
period following the beverage consumption. An ECG change known as QTc prolongation, sometimes associated with life-threatening irregularities in the heartbeat, was seen after drinking the energy drink, but not after the caffeine beverage. Several drugs have actually been pulled from the marketplace for causing similar irregularities in heart function. The participants’ blood pressure increased by up to 5 points after consuming the energy drink, while consumption of the caffeine-only beverage yielded a modest blood-pressure increase of just one point. These changes are not necessarily harmful for healthy individuals, but they could prove hazardous for people with certain heart conditions. And, alarmingly, more than half of the cases of people who got sick from energy drinks, between 2010 and 2013, were children.

Food Review: Reef Fish and Chip Shop, Golf Del Sur
33 CW
By Gordon Slayney
Fish-and-chip heaven! WHEN I was asked if I would like to review a new fish-andchip shop on the island, I sort of imagined what I would be getting. How wrong I was! When we arrived at The Reef, on Golf del Sur, I was suprised to see that the establishment was split into two. On one side is a traditional fish-andchip shop, which was what I was expecting, but on the other side is a lavishly-furbished restaurant, with eating areas, inside and out.
It was a “traditional meets exquisite” experience. I took my friend Ronnie with me; he is from the North West of England, renowned for having some of the best-ever “chippies”, so I valued his input. Having been shown to our table by our waitress, Pri, we looked at the menu. To our delight, not
Ted’s Grill Formerly Fernando’s, with same succulent Flame-Grilled Peri-Peri Chicken on the menu. However, we have now introduced the Ted’s Tower 100% Beef Burger, or you can build your own. Also, try our amazing Giant BBQ Honey-Glazed Ribs, Sunday lunches, Breakfasts, Homemade Italian Pasta including Veggie Dishes, or why not grill your own steak to your liking at your table? only were there all the normal items you would find in a chip shop, but there was also a range of starters and main meals. For starters, Ron had the salmon with cream cheese, all on a bellini pancake bread, which looked to-diefor. I opted for the deep-fried, cheese-
and-potato bombitas, which were really tasty, and worked together very well. I had already decided to sample the traditional fish and chips and mushy peas, until I spotted steamed, allsteak, suet pudding with rich, onion gravy and chips, on the main menu!
I squealed with delight, literally, as I haven’t tasted these since moving to the island, seven years ago. I just had to order one, while Ron opted for a meal from the extensive “specials” board; homemade stew, with a sideserving of Canarian potaoes, cooked in butter and served with fresh, crusty bread. The food was delicious. While we were there, the chip-shop side of things was really busy with orders being phoned in, and customers calling for their favourite takeaways. The chip-shop menu is what you would expect, with a lot more besides, offering the delights you would expect back home, including pies, fritters, jumbo battered sausages, saveloys, peas, beans and curry sauce. And, of course, North
Atlantic cod and, haddock, served in a beer-batter, using a secret recipe which the owners often get asked about, but they obviously don’t let on how it’s made! Pri, Tracey, Mark and Lauren are all part of this familyrun business. The Reef opened its doors last December, and they have been busy ever since, with the restaurant being a favourite with residents and holidaymakers alike. They also operate a delivery service to Los Abrigos, Golf del Sur, Amarilla Golf and Las Chafiras, with a minimum order of 10 euros. The restaurant is open Tuesday-Sunday, 5pm10pm, but the chip shop stays open until midnight. The contact number for orders and deliveries is 922 691599, and they have a Facebook page “The Reef Fish and Chip Shop”. Testimonials can be found on their Trip Advisor page. I was really disappointed that I didn’t try the traditional fish and chips that were being served - they looked amazing. Me being me, and not to be outdone, I ordered a take-away battered sausage to try later on that evening, and, oh my word, that batter! What’s the recipe?!

Buy a good bed for restful sleep By Miruna Voicu at Deco Nuevo
WHO doesn’t love to fall into a comfortable bed at the end of a long day’s work, or a lengthy session by the pool, if you are on holiday? A good night’s sleep is obviously a necessity if you are working, but, if you don’t sleep well, you won’t enjoy your holiday much, either. Your choice of bed will come down to practicality and style, as well as budget. Space is often an issue in Tenerife, where rooms may be smaller than you are used to at home. If space is restricted, stay away from beds that have a frame and/or footboard attached, as this will take up valuable floor space. Curiously, most English beds are sold with a headboard attached, whereas Spanish beds are sold without a headboard, which is bought separately and fixed to the wall. This has a practical advantage when it comes to pulling the bed out to clean and mop. If you like to sit up in bed and read, go for an upholstered headboard, which can be made to order in a huge range of styles and colours, to match your interior-design scheme. As for the bed itself, it’s best to stay away from pure memory foam in warm climates, because you sink into the mattress and your body heat is retained. Better to go for a combination variety that has a sprung
core, and then a layer of memory foam, so you get the comfort, backed up with more support. If storage is an issue in your property, you could consider a bed that has storage underneath. Rather than drawers, which are more common in the UK, you can get bed bases here that you lift up with hydraulics (with all bedding still in place), to reveal a huge amount of space inside. This enclosed storage is clean and safe, and can be used for all sorts of household items, clothes, shoes or bedding. These beds come in a variety of finishes,
including faux leather in various colours (maybe to match that headboard). Because the mattress sits squarely on top of them, they don’t take up any extra room. If your bedroom is really small, go for one with rounded corners, and your shins will thank you for it! Bed sizes can be different in Spain, too. A normal double here is 135cm, or 4ft 6ins in old money. A 150cm (5ft) is also available, and a 180cm (6ft), which is the same width as two single beds pushed together. It is better to go by the sizes if you are buying sheets, rather than the generic
names of double or king size, as these can be confusing. If you aren’t sure what to go for, why not contact an interior designer who can come to your house and measure, and make sure you are getting what you want, and that it will fit perfectly in your home? Always work with someone who will take your old beds away, otherwise you’ll be left with a headache! All items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo on 922 789 729. Estimates are free and without obligation, and delivery and fitting are included. Please visit our website www. deconuevo.com

Size matters over here
By Sonya Hinley from Tenerife Island rentals
WHEN it comes to living in and renting an apartment, the majority of these properties are fully-furnished, which means you have the basics on arrival. Televisions and electrical equipment can all be purchased relatively cheaply in Tenerife, thanks to larger stores such as Worten, which makes it easier to find the home comforts. It might be worth noting that some properties are not rented with microwave, dishwasher, TV or DVD player. Bedding and towels can be quite a personal item,
and some people like to purchase, or use their own items brought over. Long-term rental properties are normally let out with very basic bedding items, such as, perhaps, a mattress protector and pillow. But remember that some bed sizes are different in Spain than in the UK, so it is always wise to check first before you fill your suitcase with Marks and Spencer’s bedding! Furniture is very much a personal choice, but the Tenerife heat means you will prefer a cool, tiled floor to warm carpets. And, often, choices available here will not be what you would expect in the UK. Also, outdoor furniture is more important here than in the UK, and the sun can fade items. And it is an excellent idea to invest in black-out blinds or curtains to protect your indoor furniture. With so many new shops and the internet at our fingertips, we have a wide range of choice now.
It really would be a good idea to weigh up the costs involved in bringing your own furniture and belongings to Tenerife. That’s because
it could prove more costeffective to purchase new items once here. Popular shops, in no particular order:

Homes getting dearer
THE cost of homes in Spain, new and used, increased 2% in April, compared with the same month last year.
But it’s a huge 39.9% decrease against 2007, when prices were at an all-time high, according to the Tinsa IMIE index. The growth registered in April was down to a 6.1% increase in capitals and large cities in the last year. The price of homes in the Balearic and Canary Islands showed a 4% increase, which isn’t surprising because these are the two areas in which prices have improved the most since April 2016.

Sports take centre stage MAY is an extremely sporting month in Adeje this year, with events in a variety of disciplines taking place every weekend, free and open to the public. Last week, in the Las Torres pavilion, the borough entertained the top European wheelchair basketball teams in the European Champions Cup, with Club Deportivo Ilunion de Madrid beating Italians Briantea Cantú in the final, watched by hundreds of fans. The same sports centre also hosted the Spanish National Badminton Championships the previous Monday. And for gymnasts, there was the Cabildo de Tenerife games, organised by Costa Adeje International School,
in collaboration with Adeje Council and Tenerife Gymnastic Federation. “It’s no coincidence that all of these sporting events are taking place in Adeje,” said Sports Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera. “An ideal way of encouraging young people to practise sports in Adeje is to show them, and invite them to watch national and international competitions here in the borough, to give them extra motivation.” He added: “It is also, in parallel, an excellent, additional attraction for our visitors and tourists.” Today (Friday) and
tomorrow, the roads will be taken over by the Adeje Rally, which forms part of the national rallying competition. It will be run throughout the borough, with the final presentations in the town’s Plaza de España tomorrow (Saturday). The following Saturday (20th May) features open-sea swimmers, competing in the annual sea swim, Travesía a Nado Costa Adeje. “With an increasing number of athletes from overseas taking part, this event is now considered one of the top swims in Tenerife,” said the Sports Councillor. And on the weekend of 27th-28th May, there will be a European Fitness Championship taking place in Siam Mall, with over 150 participants from many different countries taking part.
CD Marino
Marino’s home concern Union Puerto 3 CD Marino 0 IT wasn’t the best way to finish their away schedule, as Marino went down in Fuerteventura after conceding two goals inside the first 10 minutes. The defeat left Marino in eighth spot in their Tercera division group, but they are aiming to give their home fans
a better result this Sunday at noon, when Estrella CF are the last visitors of the season to their Las Americas stadium. Goals after the third and eighth minute left a mountain for Marino to climb. But although they stemmed the flow, their hosts hit a third goal just
inside the second half. It has been an upand-down season for Marino, with a playoff berth slipping from their grasp in the last few months. But they have been able to blood more of their talented youngsters, which augers well for next season.
Ladies’ Football
Don’t switch off
THERE´S still plenty to play for in Spain’s Ladies’ Primera football league with two regular games remaining.
Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife want to end with a flourish before their big playoff weekend finals in Madrid, while Tacuense are clinging to the faint hope of avoiding relegation. Tenerife lost 3-0 at
Atletico Madrid last weekend, and coach Toni Ayala will be looking for a positive reaction when they host Levante on Sunday at noon in El Medano. The team’s form has tailed off lately, and they will need to be at their best to repel fourth-placed Levante. Atletico picked them off with two goals from Sonia and a Manayo strike in between. Tenerife are sixth in the league, thanks to
a season of flowing football and plentiful goals. They have dried up in recent games, but the last match in front of their 600-plus home crowd should see them raise their game. Tacuense achieved a 0-0 home draw against Espanyol last week in La Laguna, which was a welcome point. But they need at least one win from their last two games to have a chance of keeping their top-flight status.

Bluebell boys strike 10! Exiles v Bluebell BLUEBELL travelled to Exiles on Tuesday in search of their first points of the season, after failing to take any in their previous five matches. Captain Al, and Mick, opened with wins for Bluebell, but Exiles fired back by taking the next two. Bluebell then won the next three frames to go 5-2 ahead, and, finally, pick up a much-deserved five points. Exiles won the final frame. By Round 5 in the team game, all was equal. But the deadlock was broken when Mucker scored a superb 13, leaving Bluebell just five points away from all 10 points. The damage was done, and Bluebell ran out 55-39 winners to take all 10 points. Well done to them! Dreamers v Treehouse The teams were joint-top, so by the end of the night, maybe, there could be a clear front-runner. Treehouse, who were without captain Scott, were still capable of
taking points. But after eight frames, Dreamers had taken five points by winning 5-3. In the team game, Dreamers had a 10-point advantage at the end of round 5 and looked favourites for all 10 points. The next few rounds saw Treehouse claw back to leave the scores almost equal. But Treehouse Paul stepped up in round 9 and scored nine points, to take them over the line for five points. The spoils were shared, so, again, both teams remained locked on the same points at the top of the table. What a marathon! Gaffers v Hammers These old rivals faced off again, but Gaffers were missing singles champion and current high breakholder Neil, so they called on Wilson to make up the numbers. Hammers got off to an excellent start by taking the first three frames, but then, after attempting to get out of a tight snooker, Wes ran into the black, which went
clean into the end pocket, to leave Hammers 3-1 up. Bad luck struck again in the next frame when Barry suffered the same fate as Wes by losing on the black, so 3-2. But Hammers dug in and won all remaining frames to run out 6-2 winners. Boom! The team game was neck and neck and either team could have succeeded. But Hammers had the upper hand, winning 55-46 to take them to within five points of the joint leaders. Hammers have yet to play both Treehouse and Dreamers and Palms 2, so their final three games will be most exciting. Palms 2 v Phoenix Palms, taking full advantage of their +15 handicap, have so far given a good account of themselves, sitting jointsecond in the league. After going 3-0 down in the singles, they won the next four, and, going into the eighth frame, threatened to deny Phoenix a share of the points. But Phoenix’s Pod
dug deep and levelled the score at 4-4. The team game featured an impressive 14 from Palms’ Mick, which really did the damage, and they were 5544 winners, taking 10 points to stay joint-second and all to play for. Palms 1 v Terrace Terrace arrived at Palms with high hopes. Last week, they took all 10 points against Bluebell and, this week, they had the added bonus of Mark P’s return. Palms, who were without Wayne, called in Wayne from 2nd Division Picasso’s, which proved to be a positive decision. He won both his singles, beating Paul and Mark P, to help Palms to an impressive 6-2 win. Well done to them, and also worthy of a mention was Captain Baz, who dispatched Adi and Greer to win both his singles, so Palms took another five points to leave Terrace with nothing. The team game saw Palms 11 points clear at the end
of the second round, but an impressive 13 from Palms Wayne put them 50-24 ahead at the end of Round 3. The damage was done and Baz took them over the line for a 55-31 success. So Palms 1 took all 10 points, leaving the Terrace emptyhanded. So, Week 6 of nine has left the top of the table looking very interesting. Realistically, I think that any one of the top five teams can win, and I also think the wounded Gaffers will play a part in shaping the final results. They travel to Treehouse next week, and, with Captain Neil back, they will surely will be looking to lift themselves from the bottom of the table. Maybe a -25 handicap was a little harsh on the champions, and especially for the two weeks when they failed to take a point. But if they can win maximum points from their last three games, Gaffers could, mathematically, still steal it. Watch this space.
Basketball
Extra bounce for stars NO ONE wants the season to end when it has been the best of all, so Iberostar Tenerife are savouring the last lap of their record-breaking campaign … and even dreaming of greater things beyond. But there was a bit of a hangover feel to last Thursday’s 76-72 home defeat by Baskonia, of Vitoria. The euphoria of winning the inaugural European Champions League meant lots of public engagements, and they could be forgiven for not being at their sharpest. The first quarter caught them cold with a 16-25 reverse, and they never really recovered, despite
top-eight teams. There’s an even bigger carrot on the horizon later this year because, as European champions, they qualify to play Americas’ champions Guaros de Laram, of Venezuela, for the Intercontinental Cup. Following the huge success of hosting the Champions
captain Nico Richotti leading by example with 18 points. That was a game in hand, because of their Cup heroics, and quick on its tail came a home game on Sunday, with Tenerife back to their best in an 80-76 win over Bilbao. It was a close match, the second and last quarters
being drawn. But they did just enough in the other two. Aaron Doornekamp was his usual, consistent, self with 17 points, and San Miguel weighed in with 14. That left Tenerife lying sixth in the Liga Endesa, with two games remaining, and the play-off weekend at the end of the month, involving the
League, there is a strong possibility that their La Laguna stadium will stage another game on the world stage. And captain Nico Richotti will welcome a chance to get his hands on another trophy, if they can get the Champions League prize out of his grasp!

CD Tenerife
Hungry, defiant… and back! By Colin Kirby
HIGH Noon, and the lynch mob had consigned Tenerife players to Boot Hill after defeat at UCAM Murcia the previous week.
Main sharp-shooter Amath had been ruled out for a few weeks with an injury, and the vultures were circling the Heliodoro Stadium. But long-term fans had faith that, even with the odds stacked against them, they would kick back like a bucking bronco. This home success over Lugo showed again what great character and team spirit CD Tenerife have, and it boosted them back up to fourth with just five games left before the promotion play-offs. Lugo lurked a few places behind Tenerife and still had hopes of their own. Former Santa Cruz player Iriome always likes to take on his old team and was involved in their best moves early on. Tenerife had to be alert in defence, and fullbacks Camille and Raul Camara were in top form, particularly the latter, who demonstrated why he has been given a contract extension.

The 33-year-old defender didn’t put a foot wrong all game, giving the Lugo forward a torrid time throughout. Suso, another old warhorse, made some good openings on the right and Rachid played a mighty game in midfield. Choco Lozano had the main striking role, but he’s not an instinctive striker like the injured Amath, and doesn’t always react
quickly enough. The big revelation was Gaku Shibasaki, who played just off Choco and was buzzing all game with neat flicks and inspired passes. This was the day he won over his doubters. Just after the half-hour, Camille broke on the left, launched a tempting cross into the goal area, and Aitor Sanz dived between two markers to head the ball home.
But the lead could have been short-lived. Lugo pressed forward, and Dani Hernandez parried a free-kick to his right, then surpassed that with a follow-up flick away on his other side. Pure class! But with the second half just two minutes old, disaster struck. Campillo had a good shot at goal, Jorge went to clear, but his header wasn’t powerful
enough and the ball went inside the post to make it 1-1. Jorge also picked up a booking, to join Alberto on suspension for the next game. Lugo took this as a rallying call and came on strong. Dani produced another wonderful save, and, at the other end, Choco missed out with a soft effort. Tayron, who came on for Suso, slotted in well and Tenerife got back on top again. Miguel tried to rough-up Shibasaki, but he popped back with a smile and a testing shot for the keeper. Aaron was the last throw of the subs’ dice, on for Rachid. He slipped into his early-season form and started to roast Lugo down the left. Then, while cutting in, Aaron thundered the ball at the post, and Choco was there to grab the winner from the rebound with 10 minutes remaining. It was a resounding answer to the critics, and the only down side was the 12,829 crowd, which was 6,000 down on the previous home game. Tenerife have a bit of wriggle room again, but a point at least at playoff outsiders Huesca tomorrow (Saturday) will keep Tenerife firmly in the saddle.
UD Ibarra
Ibarra right in the mix
SOMETHING is stirring in the small town of El Fraile because their football team, UD Ibarra, have secured a promotion play-off spot in their Tercera Division group. It has been a quiet revolution, but there was nothing shy about their latest win over the Fuerteventura team, and they could easily have hit double figures once they got into their stride. A low-key start, with too many cautious back-passes by the home side, gave little indication of the goal glut to follow. But there was a feeling that they were simply toying with the visitors. Angel was breaking well on the right, but he wasn’t getting the passes his speed deserved, and strikers Balduino and Manzi were hungry for that telling ball to unleash them. It took a shock reversal to kick-start Ibarra. Cotillo’s
UD Ibarra 6 Cotillo 1
Couche raided down the left, rounded a defender and laid on an excellent pass for Hector to make it 1-0. Matias found plenty of room down the left, but he was denied a chance to equalise by a late offside call. Manzi, now tormenting the visitors’ defence, couldn’t believe he didn’t get a penalty when Alberto hacked him down in the box. Alberto really did lead a charmed life, handling the
ball in open play with no comeback. But Manzi was flying, and when Couche brought him down, this time he was awarded a spot-kick from which he scored, despite the keeper getting a touch to the ball. A few minutes later, Manzi was bearing down on goal again and keeper Agoney took his feet away. But somehow, the ref missed that one as well. Ibarra, camped in their opponents’ half now, were playing with confidence, and Balduino curled a screamer into the Cotillo net for a half-time lead. Agoney failed to return after the break because of an injury, and his replacement, Oliver, had the dubious pleasure of trying to defy the rampant home team.
Matias warmed his gloves up with a hard shot that he handled well, but he had no chance against a classy move as Christian fed Angel, who controlled the ball well to make it 3-1. It was one-way traffic now, and Alberto had another dig at Angel. The resulting free-kick was blocked, and Ivan’s casual clearance let in Manzi for a shot that just missed the top corner of the goal. Youngster Efran, who replaced Angel, was quick to show his skills with a cheeky ball, slipped through a defender’s legs for Manzi to score. And Efran himself wasn’t to be denied, and, when his header was saved, he latched on to the rebound and tucked the ball past a despairing keeper.
Ibarra used their big lead to bring on more subs, with a view to the long, drawnout, play-off road ahead. Cotillo even managed to get a couple of attacks themselves, but Ibarra were still keen to add to their tally. Manzi, in the thick of the action, must have been wearing an alluring aftershave because the Cotillo defence couldn’t leave him alone. Hugo fouled him in full flight but, incredibly, the ref made it a hat-trick of denied penalties. The final goal underlined the superiority of the home side. A long ball into the box was heading for the target, but Junior, fresh off the bench, was able to walk the ball over the goal-line. It was an easy win against a poor side, but Ibarra showed they have a hunger for goal that will serve them well in the weeks ahead.
