Complex flooded with work

Continued from Front

It’s all part of the Council’s #AronaAvanza programme, and the Jesús Domínguez Grillo complex, built in 1984, will be given a comprehensive renovation, assisted by its Department of Sports and Recreation, to wipe out its current problems. These include having to close the swimming-pool steps, and the flooded tennis courts when it rains. There is also constant dampness in certain areas. The Council has already drawn up a master plan for the centre, which specifies its main needs. The work, included in the special programme, with a budget of 2.5m euros, will be carried out in several phases to avoid closing the facilities completely. Among the actions planned are demolishing the

swimming pool structure and dressing rooms, repairs to the sanitation of the basement floor, replacing the present roof, complete reformation of changing rooms, construction of new tennis courts and gym, better access for disabled people, and renovating the main sports court. This complex, tucked away near the main Los Cristianos roundabout, is used by thousands of private

individuals and many clubs, and as a training base by national and international municipal teams. But, says the Council: “It has remained small for a population of 90,000 inhabitants throughout the municipality, and more than 21,000 In Los Cristianos itself.” The main damage affects the pools (the 50m one and the learners’ pool at the far end of the complex); the

Drivers facing tests, to safeguard cyclists SPAIN’S General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has announced tougher measures to protect cyclists, following three serious accidents in the past fortnight involving drunk drivers, who killed three riders and left 11 others injured.

The organisation responsible for road-safety in Spain unveiled a plan on Tuesday that will see increased roadside controls for alcohol and drugs on Saturday and Sunday mornings, when large numbers of cyclists are out and about. Spain’s Interior Ministry says there will be an additional 130,000 alcoholand-drug checks on drivers at these times, and that tougher sanctions will be applied to wrong-doers. These include driving bans for anybody found to be over the limit for a second time in two years. And once the bans have

tennis courts, which suffer floods; the covered parquet floor, as well as the cement of the outdoor sports court, which is hardly the most suitable material for sports such as roller-skating. In addition, modernisation works will take place around the pools, such as changing the paving of the area and the showers. Arona Mayor José Julián Mena said: “We are addressing the complete remodelling of Jesus Domínguez Grillo. “It is something absolutely necessary because it is one of our most in-demand facilities, and we intend the centre to enter the 21st century.” Meanwhile, there are also plans afoot for the Council’s Department of Sports and Recreation to resurface eight multi-sports courts throughout the municipality. The courts, spread throughout various towns, including those at Montaña Frías, Túnez, La Camella, La Florida, Cabo Blanco, Buzanada and Las Rosas, will provide much-improved

facilities for residents. The total Arona Council project is part of the muchheralded programme promoted by Mayor José Julián Mena. It involves an overall investment of more than seven million euros this year, and also covers the improvements to roads and pavements. The resurfacing is excellent news for residents in the areas named, as many of the courts are in a sub-standard condition, because of the materials used when they were constructed. They are the same as the asphalt used in pavements, which is hardly ideal for sports. Mayor Mena said: “This project is the continuity of many actions we are carrying out, and will continue to do so in the coming months for the improvement of all facilities to practice sports, both exterior and covered.” The surfaces will be replaced with a synthetic resin, which guarantees adequate slip for sports, and has a maximum budget of 126,000 euros.

Property boost for youngsters

THE Government is set to give thousands of euros to young people in Spain, and the Canaries, to help them get on the property ladder. Requirements for the grants include being under 35 and having a monthly income of less than 1,600 euros. The funding measure

aims to boost property purchases in the country, after the scrapping of fiscal aid in 2013. There are growing fears that the housing market could, eventually, implode again if young adults are not given the chance to own their first home.

been served, the drivers must have psychological and physical assessments before being allowed back on the roads. In the last seven years, the number of accidents involving cars and bikes has doubled. And, said Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido: “The DGT and the Ministry are concerned about cyclists. “More than 400 cyclists have died on Spain’s roads in the last decade. In the last seven years, the number of accidents involving cars and bikes has doubled on both urban and non-urban roads.” Academics and experts on road-safety say Spain’s infrastructure has failed to

keep up with the growing numbers of cyclists out and about. They also believe that awareness campaigns are required, both for drivers and bike-users. A recent survey suggests that more than one-third of cyclists do not know the rules of the road. The DGT will also be monitoring Spain’s roads, with a special emphasis on cyclists. This will be done using helicopters and unmarked cars, and, at the same time, the authority will run awareness campaigns, as well as putting together more detailed figures on accidents involving cyclists.

THE captain of a large cargo ship from Singapore was found clinging to a lifebuoy off the coast of southern Spain, in a “very serious state”.

Passers-by in the Andalucian port of Tarifa, Costa de la Luz, told officers on Monday that they had spotted a man in visibly-poor condition, drifting at sea in high winds and strong waves, according to a police statement. He was rescued by police, who said he was wearing only a white shirt and was “gripping a rigid lifebuoy fitted with a beacon”. Emergency services

rushed him to hospital. They added: “He showed signs of extreme hypothermia, bloated lips, face and eyes, and swollen eyelids, due to exposure to the sun and salty water, which indicated that he had been adrift for several hours. He was also bruised.” Police later discovered that the mystery man was captain of the “Morning Ninni”, which had been sailing close to the Spanish territory of Ceuta, in northern Morocco, across the Gibraltar strait. The ship, a vehicletransport vessel according to specialised sites, had alerted Spanish rescue services that a man “may have fallen overboard”, that morning, said police.

Spain seeks a full euro-zone facelift THE Spanish Government, keen to see a complete overhaul of the euro zone, has offered Brussels various proposals towards this ambition in a seven-page document. It is calling for an anti-crisis budget, a common unemployment insurance system and euro-bonds, together with the completion of the banking union, which would include “risks” being pooled. Mariano Rajoy’s government is seeking to build on new French President Emmanuel Macron’s own wishlist of reforms to the EU economic system. And Spain is, allegedly, now asking for “a

real, economic government”. The document is an “unfinished project” says a source, and full fiscal union is still pending. And to achieve that, Madrid wants to set out criteria that member states will have to meet, regarding fiscal issues and foreign trade. Europe’s recent recession “revealed critical errors in the design of the euro”, said the Spanish Government, which rules one of the countries that has suffered most from the economic crisis. And, it argued, Europe came up with solutions “for short-term needs” instead of compiling a well-structured plan. Rajoy’s government also requests greater “democratic control” over institutions such as the Eurogroup, a

Blue-Flags abounding SPAIN has been awarded 684 Blue Flags this year, including the 14 given to Tenerife, which means it boasts the most high-quality beaches in the world.

This annual award is presented by the European Environmental Education Foundation (ADEAC) to coastal areas which have significant, environmental initiatives in place, quality bathing water and good facilities. It was Spain’s 30th consecutive year on top, despite having six fewer flags awarded than last year. And of the total, 579 have gone to beaches, 100 to marinas and five to tourist ships. The Comunidad Valencia

received the most awards, with 129, followed by Galicia (113), Cataluña (95) and Andalucia (90). As for Tenerife, Arona has kept a tight hold on the two flags it regained last year, at Las Vistas and Los Cristianos. And Santiago del Teide’s Playa La Arena notched up its 13th consecutive flag, which represents one every year since the conception of the awards. Other Tenerife-bound Blue Flags go to El Médano, in Granadilla; Fañabé and El Duque, in Adeje; Playa y Calas de la Jaquita in Guía de Isora; El Socorro, in Los Realejos; San Telmo, in Puerto de la Cruz; La Arena-Mesa del Mar, in Tacoronte; La Laguna’s Piscinas de Bajamar, and the ports of Los Gigantes and the Real Club Náutico de Tenerife, in Santa Cruz.

gathering of EU finance ministers which makes key decisions without being accountable to anybody. Madrid and Paris have these same beliefs, but Germany and several other countries are not convinced. Berlin is in a privileged situation: full employment, growth, balanced accounts, negative yield on its bonds and a huge trade surplus that violates European regulations. And, says German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in response to Macron’s demands: “I don’t see the need to change policies.” On the contrary, Spain wants deep reforms that will lead to more than just a shared currency: in this future scenario, memberstates will share an anti-cri-

sis budget, unemployment insurance, a treasury, eurobonds and a true banking union. Madrid wants a joint fiscal policy for the euro, and even a redefinition of the Stability Pact, which is the mechanism controlling the public accounts, to prevent cases in which adjustments make recessions even worse. “The shortcomings in the euro’s architecture explain the differential impact of the last crisis,” complains Spain in its document. “The euro does not just need firefighters; it also needs architects.” The European Commission will release its own, longawaited report on the future of the euro at the end of this month. Yet Macron’s victory has

been a wake-up call: France clearly wants to redefine the Paris-Berlin axis, and make headway on economic and security issues. Even so, little will happen until after Germany holds its own September election, although the Spanish document insists: “We cannot transfer responsibility for decisions that are very important to citizens, without the democratic legitimacy to do so.” It then goes on to warn that “the European project can only endure if its citizens see that it provides sustainable and inclusive prosperity levels”. That is not happening right now because the current eurozone has opened up a yawning gap between the north and south of Europe.

Rajoy wants beneficial Brexit to suit everyone

SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has shared his thoughts with Frenchman Michel Barnier, the European Commission’s chief negotiator for the UK’s withdrawal from the EU.

The meeting took place following the extraordinary European Council on 29th April, at which the guidelines were approved for negotiations with the UK and ahead of the approval by the General Affairs Council to authorisation the start of negotiations. Formal talks are expected to begin following the 8th June British General Election. And, in preparation, Barnier is visiting Member States to explain the negotiation process, and to listen to their viewpoints. Rajoy and Barnier agreed on the importance of the 27 Member States and EU institutions maintaining unity during Brexit, because only in this way will it be possible to conclude the negotiations to the benefit of the EU as a

whole. Spain’s President reiterated his support for the chief negotiator, and said he backed the EC’s approach. The two men also addressed some of the most important issues in the negotiations, such as the rights of the EU citizens in the UK, and the liquidation of the UK’s

“financial obligations” to the European Union. Rajoy insisted on the importance of reaching an agreement as soon as possible on the rights of citizens. It is a leading priority for Spain in the negotiations, which should be as farreaching and beneficial as possible.

Adeje Summer University’s new course-list for students There’s no rest for money-launderers THE Spanish Government is planning more crack-downs on money-laundering with a series of measures, including tougher sanctions against wrong-doers.

ANTONIO Martinón, Rector of the University of La Laguna (ULL), and Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, have presented Adeje’s Summer University programme. It also marks the 25th anniversary of the university’s presence in the borough, and 225 years since the foundation of the ULL. On offer this summer, from 17th-21st July, will be six courses and 14 workshops for students. Mayor Fraga said that over those 25 years, courses had changed and adapted to the needs of students, and that the 2017 course had been revamped. He also said, proudly, that Adeje’s Summer University had survived the economic crisis, which affected

many cultural and social programmes in the islands. Two years ago, the organisers adopted a new format, with shorter courses on three mornings in the week, complemented by afternoon and evening workshops. It enables them to double the offer, and sees the number of students attending courses during the week in question doubling from 200 to 400, according to ULL Vice-Rector Francisco García. The cost of attending these courses in July has also been modified; a course will cost students about 25 euros and a workshop 10 euros. Registration for courses is now open and all the relevant information is available on this link: https://www.ull.es/Private/folder/institucional/ull/wull/cursosdeextension/adeje.html Tourism, education, medicine, communi-

cation, creativity and sport will be the general themes addressed this summer, which are open to a different public, and not just third-level students. In fact, information about the summer courses was presented at the tourism trade fair Fitur, opening the possibility of visitors attending a course or workshop of interest to them during their stay on the island. The ULL’s Rector Martinón said this Summer University had consolidated and reinforced the concept of extending general learning to other zones. He added that the course was now recognised as a valuable educational tool throughout the islands. This year’s poster was designed by Fine Arts graduate Alba González, who wanted to display the importance of culture and learning, in parallel with recognition of the diversity of the person.

Drunken driver who gave the game away A BOOZY driver gave the police every assistance possible to nab him after driving into their garage, mistakenly, in the early hours of Sunday.

The 38-year-old drove into what he assumed was a public, car-parking lot in the northern Spanish city of Pamplona. Unfortunately for him, it just happened to be attached to the municipal police station. Officers there thought, initially, that the vehicle was occupied by an undercover colleague. But they soon realised the car was not one of theirs, and the driver attempted to explain his error. But he was in such a state that his passenger had to move the car. Needless to say, the wayward motorist is now facing charges of drunkdriving, driving without a licence, and refusing to take a breathalyser test.

It is also guaranteeing anonymity for whistle-blowers, and demanding that stores flag up individual purchases of more than 10,000 euros. The proposals are outlined in an Economy Ministry document, up for public consultation until 10th June, which aims to bring Spanish law into line with a European Union (EU) directive from May 2015. Spanish law already includes most of the measures outlined in the EU directive, but some articles require adapting, particularly those relating to legal authority to impose sanctions, “making them compatible with the maximum limits outlined in the European directive.” That means improving detection and making it easier for people to report money-laundering by offering greater confidentiality. The idea is not to make any “fundamental modifications” to the law on money-laundering and financing terrorism, but to toughen penalties. Regarding cash payments, the limit for non-residents in Spain will remain at 15,000 euros, but retailers will have to introduce antimoney-laundering measures on purchases of more than 10,000 euros. For residents, the limit is 2,500 euros. Apart from toughening sanctions, the Economy Ministry’s document looks at changing the structure of business groups to bring them in line with Europe.

Luxury hotel will make a big splash

COSTA Adeje should be boasting another luxury hotel by the end of the year, complete with 242 suites and a sevenstorey-high, glassbottom swimming pool, hanging over the side of the building’s façade. Hotel group Ashotel describes the 5-star GF Victoria, by the Fedola group, as “a tourist

accommodation of great luxury, that will stand out for its distinctive offers”. Victoria López, director of the hotel chain, along with members of its board of directors, and a team from Adeje Council, led by Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, converged on the site recently to check its progress. Victoria said: “The hotel is designed especially for families, with the support of children’s psychologists and child-marketing specialists. “There will be a nursery, houses with trees, zip-

Drug dealer caught as he puffed away!

A MAN aged 50 has been detained by National Police in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas for drug-trafficking. They were tipped-off by several neighbours, who phoned to alert them of the sale and consumption of drugs in the area.

Officers who went to the scene arrested an individual, who had nine wraps of cocaine, and large amounts of cash. After arresting him, police discovered he already had 22 previous convictions … and he was smoking a cannabis joint when they approached him. He is now awaiting trial in Las Palmas courts.

lines, rock-climbing and subterranean caves for lots of adventures.” She added: “The entire family, even the little ones, will get specific attention-focus on relaxation techniques, with the best spa and detox diets.” As for the suspended swimming pool, Victoria said: “Customers will feel as though they are swimming, suspended in the air and enjoying panoramic views of Playa de Las Americas and La Gomera.” She showed the visitors around and emphasised

how the hotel would add to Costa Adeje’s prestige. She said the hotel would offer a different kind of experience in which, she added: “Clients can discover new ways to enjoy their leisure time.” Even though there will be zones designed specifically with children in mind, the hotel has also made sure there are areas for youngsters of varying ages

and interests, from crèche options to tree houses, underground caves, and zipline adventures. There will also be an adultsonly section, offering extra peace and privacy, with a spa, nudist zone and more. Other hotels in the GF chain in Tenerife are the GF Gran Costa Adeje, GF Isabel, GF Fañabe and the GF Noelia, in Puerto de la Cruz.

Police boat raid fishes out cocaine by the ton

A FISHING boat from Venezuela, carrying about 2½ tons of cocaine, was intercepted by agents of the National Police Special Operations Group and Customs Surveillance officials. They detained the seven crew members, all Venezuelan nationals, off the west coast of the Canaries, and also seized a pistol. The operation was carried out jointly by the National Police and the Tax Agency, in collaboration with Portugal Police, the American DEA and the British NCA. An investigation in January took place in the knowledge that a Spanishbased, South American group, were planning to ship a large amount of cocaine to Spain. During the probe, coinci-

dences featured between operational information from several countries. And the National Police employed international collaboration to prevent the huge drug haul reaching European shores. Once the Venezuelan fishing vessel was located, National Police officers boarded it and found 80 bales of cocaine, weighing around 2,400kg. Once the ship’s flag was recorded, Venezuelan

authorities were asked to authorise the ship’s transfer to Las Palmas port. Despite the complexity of this type of operation, National Police officers have intercepted four vessels in the last couple of years, achieving great success and sending out a warning to drugtraffickers. A total of 7,925kg of cocaine and 80 people have already been detained.

HOW WILL BREXIT AFFECT YOU?

If you are a property owner in Spain, or you are thinking of buying a holiday home or property in Spain, read on to see how the UK leaving the European Union is likely to affect you. Will Brexit happen? Now that Teresa May has invoked article 50, let’s assume that on March 30th, 2019 Britain will leave the European Union. Opinion is divided as to whether it will be a hard Brexit, a soft Brexit, a red, white and blue Brexit (whatever that means), or whether Britain will crash out of the EU and revert to Word Trade Organisation rules. Given the current political uncertainty and trade implications, the honest answer is no one really knows what will happen as nothing concrete has been forthcoming from the government. Are you about to Purchase a Property in Spain? Barriers to purchasing: Many nonEuropeans buy property in Spain, there are no barriers to non-European property investment. In fact, hopefully somebody is reading this article who bought a property in Spain a very long time ago, and who remember paying in Pesetas, when the Euro was just a twinkle in the European Central Bank’s eye. So if you are purchasing we can’t think how you would be disadvantaged by this. Applying for a Spanish Mortgage: Non-EU members are currently considered to be higher risk and Spanish lenders offer less favourable mortgage terms to non-EU members. Whether the British will be considered to fall into a higher risk category is yet to be seen. Obtaining an NIE number (fiscal identity for foreigners in Spain): This is a relatively straightforward exercise and there are no discrepancies for non-

Europeans. Provided you have or are about to acquire a taxable interest in Spain, you can apply for a NIE certificate. Purchase Taxes: The relevant taxes applicable to the purchase itself will not be affected as they are all applicable to Spanish nationals, EU members and non-EU members alike. Exchange Rate: The most influential factor when purchasing a property in Spain since the referendum will be the exchange rate. How will British Residents in Spain be Affected? Visas, Blue Card, Job Opportunities: If we leave the EU the British may conceivably need to apply for a visa to remain and a Blue Card to work in Spain. Preference to EU citizens in terms of job opportunities may also be exercised, so much is likely to depend on the outcome of the negotiations for exit as to whether the British will find themselves at a disadvantage. Spanish Health Services: British residents and holiday makers may in the future need to obtain private health insurance. Spanish resources are still stretched after the devastating impact of the recession on the Spanish economy, so excluding British access to the Spanish public health system would to a certain extent alleviate the Spanish health system. Pensions: The British who have retired out to Spain will have already notice the difference in their pensions due to the weaker pound. Future developments as to the exchange rate will depend on a number of factors and predictions vary.

Whether and how the Spanish government decide to implement restrictions on British residents is impossible to predict at the moment. Would it make commercial sense for the Spanish economy? On the one hand, any restrictions are likely to mean a loss a significant degree British investment in Spain. On the other hand, certain restrictions would provide relief to overstretched Spanish resources. Thinking of Selling a Property in Spain? Exchange Rate: The exchange rate is now favourable for the British selling in Spain. Market value: The property market in Spain is beginning to show signs of recovery and prices are starting to increase. Taxes: Capital gains tax in Spain is the same for Spanish nationals, residents and non residents alike and there is no differentiation between EU and non-EU citizens. Are you about to inherit a Spanish interest? Spanish Inheritance Tax: Spain operates a two tier system for Spanish inheritance and gift tax. Until relatively recently non-residents were subject to a different tax regime from that of Spanish residents. However, as of 1 January 2015 the Spanish inheritance tax law for EU residents changed to allow all EU residents eligibility for the same rates as Spanish residents. In light of the recent referendum results, the current status of British beneficiaries of Spanish estates may change again.

Applications for Spanish inheritance tax rebates: Applications for a rebate on overpaid tax since the new law was implemented in Spain may now be rejected. Conclusion There is so much uncertainty at the moment that it is difficult to predict the future. If we do leave the EU, the effect on British expats and property owners in Spain will depend, in the instances explained above, and on the results of the Brexit negotiations. But overall Sebastian & St James believe that there is no reason to panic at this moment. Cool heads should prevail, no country wants to inadvertently damage its economy, Spanish tourism etc. We have seen a lot of scare stories that cannot be backed up by hard facts as no decisions have been made either by the British Government or the European Union. Accolade for Loro Parque AMERICAN Humane, America’s first national humane organisation, and the world’s largest certifier of animal welfare and well-being, announced that Loro Parque has achieved certification from the global American Humane Conservation programme.

Loro Parque, the 33-acre zoo in Puerto de la Cruz, passed a rigorous third-party audit to become the first institution in Europe to earn the programme’s prestigious Humane Certified seal of approval. The American Humane Conservation programme is the first-ever, and is devoted, solely, to helping verify the humane treatment of animals living in zoos, aquariums, and conservation centres across the globe. The programme enforces rigorous, evidence-based standards of comprehensive animal welfare, developed by an independent Scientific Advisory Committee comprised of world-renowned leaders in the fields of animal science, animal behaviour, animal ethics, and conservation. “American Humane is excited to recognise Loro Parque as the very first Humane Certified institution in Europe,” said American Humane President and CEO Dr. Robin Ganzert. “The certification of Loro Parque by the American Humane Conservation programme

demonstrates their commitment to meeting the highest standards of humane, verifiable, and transparent animal care.” Wolfgang Kiessling, President of Loro Parque, said: “Our work at Loro Parque is defined by love and commitment to the animals and their natural environment, something to which we have dedicated more than 45 years. “This recognition is especially important to the entire team at Loro Parque, as it acknowledges, independently, the wellbeing of all our animals, more than 10,000 of which are currently in our care, and to whom we dedicate all our care and affection on a daily basis. “In these times, when the bio-diversity in the wild continues to suffer and diminish in numbers

because of all the negative impact affecting nature, we, as a modern zoo, recognise the importance of providing the best care for the animals, and, above all, endangered species. “We participate in reproduction programmes to maintain the genetic fund, and in conservation programmes of the bio-diversity, includ-

ing protection of the natural habitats.” The American Humane Conservation programme’s extensive criteria exhaustively verify the many dimensions of animal welfare and well-being. The areas of evaluation include: excellent health and housing; positive social interactions within groups of animals, as well as between

animals and handlers; safe and stimulating environments, with concern for factors such as appropriate lighting, sound levels, air quality and thermoregulation, and evidence of thorough preparation and protocols, established to prevent and manage medical or operational emergencies.

Cubs roar into Loro Parque

LORO Parque has embraced two African lion cubs, in time for the zoo celebrating the opening of its new enclosure for these spectacular animals, called Lion’s Kingdom. The cubs are sisters, and are less than a year old. They are around one metre long, 60cm high, and weigh 30-40kg. Both come from the Parc des Félins French zoo, in Nesles, and will remain in quarantine until the enclosure opens. Their main diet is based on two daily kilos each of beef, rabbit, and chicken, which is one of their favourite dishes.

Cadet Youths set for another camp

11 CW

NEWS IN BRIEF Five hurt in three-car smash

THREE vehicles have been involved in a horrendous collision at the entrance to Garachico, past the tunnel on the TF-42 road. Five people were injured and some, who were trapped inside their vehicles, had to be cut free by firefighters. They were treated on the spot, and were then taken to hospital for further medical aid.

Coastal areas dangerous TENERIFE Cadet Youth Camp was such a success over the Easter holidays that the organisers are staging another one this summer, from the 5th-12th August.

The first Youth Camp, held during Holy Week at La Guancha, in the North, was attended by young people aged 15-21, who were given first-hand, military experience. A group of Armed Forces volunteer reservists, and veterans from the General Tactical Patrol Ruiz de Oña, are in charge of organising this initiative, which will be

repeated in August. And they are hoping it becomes a tradition. Of the youngsters taking part, Lieutenant Félix Ríos said: “Some want to join the Guardia Civil, and others the Marines or the Police”. There are also other boys who were simply seeking adventure, although, after this experience, said Lt. Ríos: “They now want to join the Army.” The camp’s day-to-day routine was full of intense activities, starting at 7.30am. After breakfast, they went straight to training: sports and mountain marches, plus classes for first-aid or Morse-code. All this combined with the daily kitchen, cleaning or security duties, and there

were also visits to the EMU, the Guardia Civil Reserve and Security Group, and Unipol (the Local Police Intervention Unit). Lt. Ríos added: “We also received visits from the Canine Training Unit Tenerife K-9 in the camp, and carried out amphibious operations at Abades beach. There was also a trip to the manoeuvring field in El Porís.” Jorge is one of the cadets who participated in the camp’s first edition. His father is a Guardia Civil officer, and he wants to follow in his footsteps: “It was an impressive experience,” said Jorge. “Despite only lasting a few days it lasted, it was very intense and allowed many of the group’s virtues to emerge.”

Aerosmith flying over SANTA Cruz City Council, and the CajaCanarias Foundation, signed an agreement on Monday to jointly promote an Aerosmith concert in the capital on 8th July. Alfonso Cabello, Deputy Mayor and Economic Promotion Councillor, said: “This is a unique opportunity to position Santa Cruz internationally, given this popular American band’s following of their European tour.” He added: “With this agreement, the City Council becomes a sponsor of the event, organised by the CajaCanarias Foundation. “It takes place at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium, from 10pm, and tickets are still available. “Undoubtedly, this concert will provide great economic

benefits for the city, so to return to the international concert circuit is crucial for Santa Cruz. “And for this reason, we must make an effort to make it visible and attract the European public.” Alfredo Luaces, CajaCanarias Foundation’s Director-General, who was at the agreement-signing, said: “With this show, we intend to return to the Canary Is-

lands, to the circuit of the great concerts at an international level.” Luaces said he valued, especially, “the beneficial economic impact of hosting the final concert of this last European tour of Aerosmith in different sectors of the island”. Aerosmith concert tickets can be bought through www.entrees.es with prices ranging from 69-150 euros.

WEATHER agency Aemet has issued a warning for the Canary Islands as the calima conditions continue. The islands of Tenerife, La Palma, El Hierro and Gran Canaria all have warnings, because of potentially-high winds and rough seas, making coastal areas dangerous. The authorities remind people to be careful near these areas, and advise them not to swim in the sea unless it is safe to do so.

Spain’s Eurovision flop

PORTUGAL’S Salvador Sobral, singing Amar Pelos Dois (Love For Both), won the Eurovision Song Contest in Kiev comfortably on Saturday night. But Spain had nothing to celebrate because a jittery Manel Navarra finished last, his shaky performance earning just five points. But Britain’s Lucie Jones scored a respectable 111, despite fears of a Brexit backlash, to finish 15th.

Child saved from drowning

A BOY of five, who was pulled unconscious from a Las Americas swimming pool after nearly drowning on Sunday afternoon, was saved in the nick of time. The Emergency services were called because the child, critically ill at the poolside, was receiving CPR by lifeguards. Paramedics, who continued the resuscitation, brought him round. They stabilised him before transferring him to the Green Hospital, where his condition was “serious, but stable”.

Adeje’s free street music

El MESTURAO will host Adeje’s second Festival de Parrandas (festival groups) in Calle Grande tomorrow (Saturday) from 9pm. And taking part are the La Peseta group from Santa Cruz, bringing their particular Canarian touch to the evening. To celebrate the festival, various bars and restaurants along the town’s main street will make sure their clients have excellent seats to enjoy this free, open-air show, which was hugely appreciated last year during the first festival of its kind. Creative Development Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera said: “We are contributing to the evolution of new traditions and offering free, live music to the public for all to enjoy.”

Los Abrigos intact again

WHAT appears to have been farcical, never-ending roadworks through Los Abrigos, should be finished this week after being abandoned for a lengthy period. Granadilla Council said the job resumed in December after a stoppage of over a year, and workmen were, this week, applying the finishing touches. More than a year ago, Granadilla Works Councillor Juan Rodríguez Bello said the upgrading project was financed jointly by the local Council and the Cabildo, blaming the latter for the huge, unexplained, delay.

Yellow-bellies poured paint on poor donkey

S C U M B A GS who tipped yellow paint all over the back of a harmless donkey, then wrecked its enclosure. The ghastly group’s deed took place in La Pereda de Llanes, in Spain’s Asturias region. They poured several litres of plastic paint over four-yearold Marina, before wrecking the enclosure and allowing the mare and her two offspring, Guía and Guadalupe, to wander free.

The donkeys’ horrified owner, alerted by neighbours, searched the area and eventually found them. “He has a great heart and it is terrible to see him so shattered, because he cannot understand who would want to do that to his little donkeys,” said one neighbour. Luis Bernardo, a vet with animal charity Mundo Vivo, was fuming. “This goes beyond hooliganism,” he said. “Exposure to this plastic paint is harmful to the animal, because it can be toxic,

in addition to forming a skin and clogging the pores.” He was able to remove about 70% of the paint with a peeling machine. But because it was stuck in some areas of the donkey’s coat, and as the operation was painful for the animal, he continued the cleaning-up process the following day. The appalling incident was reported to Guardia Civil officers, who are investigating. Owner Raul and vet Luis are appealing for the public’s help to try to find the culprits.

The height of cheek...!

Ryan Sean Davy by his hideaway cave on Mount Everest

A CLIMBER, found hiding in a cave on Mount Everest, was attempting to dodge the £8,500 fee charged to scale the world’s highest peak.

South African Ryan Sean Davy was uncovered by Nepalese officials after he had scaled more than 20,000 feet. He was ordered off the mountain and will be fined £17,000. So much for fee-dodging! In a Facebook post, Davy said he was “ashamed” and feared jail after admitting his Everest expedition “has taken a very

bad turn”. Foreigners have to pay the Nepal Government £8,500 - a major earner for the impoverished country - for permission to climb the 29,030ft peak. Gyanendra Shresth, a government liaison officer at the mountain’s southerly base camp, said: “I saw him alone near the camp, so I approached him and he ran away. “I followed him with my friend and found him hiding in a cave nearby. He had set up camp in an isolated place to avoid government officials.” It is highly unusual for a foreign climber to attempt to scale Everest alone. Most do so with the help of at

least one sherpa guide, and a large support team at base camp. Mr Davy could be banned from Nepal for five years, or face a 10year ban on climbing in the country. In an accompanying Facebook post, Mr Davy, who identifies himself as a “director and producer”, said he had reached a height of 23,000ft (7,010 metres) in six hours. He told officials that he didn’t have enough money to buy a flight from the Everest region to Kathmandu to collect his passport. Instead, he said, he would walk, and then catch a bus, for a journey that would take at least four days.

Ringing the changes, so don’t get caught! TENERIFE Brits, who use cheap calls to phone home, will lose their low-cost dial number on 24th July, unless it is provided by their usual landline supplier. Here in Tenerife, this is usually Adeje-based Direct Telecom’s 1051 service, via a manual or automatic prefix. The company has been emailing clients, including other European expats living here, to advise them of the forthcoming change. And, as DT chief Mike Broeckaert said: “No one actually knows what will happen on 24th July, except that the prefix will stop working. “There could be a warning message, or maybe not. And if the phone appears to work with the 1051 prefix, people could be making calls at Movistar rates in the belief that they still have the lowcost connection.” It means that callers will have to transfer their line rental to a supplier offering a low-cost calls service, if they want to retain it when they’re calling overseas’ numbers. Those who already use Direct Telecom’s low-cost calls service, for example, and who want to transfer their line rental to the company, should email info@direct-telecom.es.

POLICE in the Fuenlabrada suburb of Madrid have referred a case to the Public Prosecutor after security staff at a shopping mall were alleged to have harassed certain people there. They were said to have pestered members of the public who were homosexual, gypsies, sub-Saharan Africans or Moroccans. An investigation by the authorities into these incidents at the Plaza de la Estación mall began after two, young, gay men were thrown out of the retail area by a guard on 4th April, after they were seen holding hands and kissing each other. A gay-rights collective, known as LGTBI, alleged that he threatened to throw them out if they kissed again. The shopping mall management claimed the incident was entirely the fault of the security firm employed at the centre, and not as a result of their orders. According to the couple’s version of events, they kissed several times, as they window-shopped in the mall while holding hands.

13 CW

Couple are ejected from shopping mall because they’re gay Moments later, a security guard approached them and said that some things were not permitted within the building, and “certain rules” had to be observed. The couple then confirmed that he threatened to throw them out if they kissed again. They took no notice, according to their version of events, and continued on their way, followed closely by the guard. Sources from LGTBI claim that the security guard displayed a “bullying attitude” toward the men during the incident. One of them turned around and demanded that the guard explain his behaviour. He says he was then grabbed by the guard, who said: “I’m going to throw you out!” He then escorted the gay couple to the exit. When police officers interviewed the security guard, he admitted that the incident had taken place. And, to their surprise, the guard

said the internal protocols of his company obliged him to take such an approach. He claimed that the firm had a number of codes or procedures for dealing with certain “collectives” in the mall. In the case of gay people, “code pink” is activated. There were, he said, other codes for Gypsies, Africans, Romanians, Arabs and South Americans. The case is now with the Public Prosecutor, who will investigate whether hate crimes or discrimination offences were committed during the incident. The shopping mall’s management condemned the incident, saying they neither “promoted nor consented to” this kind of behaviour. They were also considering whether to terminate the contract with the Ariete Seguridad security company. But an Ariete manager said the incident was sparked by a husband and wife, with two

children, who complained about the homosexual couple’s behaviour in the mall. After the security guard asked the pair to stop kissing each other, he claimed, they began to shout at the guard and insult him. He then threw them out for this alleged aggression. The company claims that this version is backed up by security-camera recordings. But gay-rights campaigners are planning to hold a demonstration next week in front of the Plaza de la Estación shopping mall. A total of 240 homophobic incidents were recorded in the Madrid region last year, according to the Madrid Observatory against Homophobia. Of these, there were 316 victims identified, but just 59 police reports filed. The majority of the victims were gay men (71%), followed by lesbians and transsexuals (13% each).

The sheer horror of Britain’s most evil man, who has died

GOOD RIDDANCE! MOORS murderer Ian Brady, the longest - serving prisoner in England and Wales, died at around 6pm on Monday at the age of 79. And those aware of his heinous crimes in the Sixties will surely have cheered, at long last.

The monster was convicted in 1966 of killing children, alongside perverted girlfriend Myra Hindley. She was dubbed the “most hated woman in Britain”, and died of cancer 14 years ago. Brady, declared criminally insane in 1985, was moved to the high-security Ashworth Hospital in Merseyside. He had been on hunger strike since 1999, and was kept alive by being force-fed a liquid nutrition mix. The full, gruesome horror of their crimes emerged at Chester Assizes during Brady’s murder trial. The judge, an all-male jury and even hardened police officers, sat in tears as they listened to the final, terrifying moments of 10-year-old Lesley Ann Downey. The sickening, 16-minute recording, which captured her pleading for her life as she was tortured, shocked the nation. Lesley Ann was attacked and strangled at the couple’s home in Hyde, near Manchester, which has since been knocked down. John Stalker, former Deputy Chief Constable of Greater Manchester, who was then a detective sergeant, later said: “Nothing in criminal behaviour before or since has penetrated my heart with quite the same, paralysing intensity.” Lesley Ann was heard whimpering for her mother and father, saying: “I want to see my mummy … honest to God. I will swear on the Bible … I have got to go because I am going

out with my Mama.” She was heard urging Brady to spare her, saying “let me go” and “don’t undress me” as she was attacked. Hindley told her to “shut-up”, while photos were taken by Brady, who wanted to record his victim’s last moments. The murder took place on Boxing Day in 1964, and Christmas music, including the Little Drummer Boy song was heard playing in the background, during part of the recording. Mr Stalker said: “The song brings back terrible memories of having to listen to a tape of Hindley and her accomplice, torturing a terrified little girl, with that music playing in the background. “When the full tape was played at the police station before the trial, I saw senior detectives and legendary crime reporters - hard men who had been through the war and seen terrible things - dissolve into tears.” Lesley Ann could be heard on the tape shouting, “Can I tell you summat? I must tell you summat. Take your hands off me for

a minute, please … please, mum, please. I cannot tell you. I cannot breathe … please God … why? What are you going to do with me?” Brady: “I want to take some photographs, that is all.” “The longer it takes you to do this, the longer it takes you to get home. If you don’t keep that hand down, I will slit your neck.” Lesley Ann had been lured from a fairground to their home, where she was undressed, gagged and strangled. The following morning, Brady and Hindley buried her naked, her clothes at her feet, in a shallow grave on Saddleworth Moor. They were jailed for life for the killings of Lesley Ann, John Kilbride, 12, and Edward Evans, 17. He later admitted they also murdered Pauline Reade, 16, and 12-year-old Keith Bennett, and was given three life sentences. Terry West, brother of Lesley Ann, said of Brady’s death: “I poured myself a glass of wine when I found out. We’ve been waiting for this day for such a long time.”

treated A fun-filled time Kittens just like rubbish

LAST Sunday, the sun shone down on our fun-raising event, and the dogs and our many supporters had a fantastic time. We would like to say a big thank-you to all the people who supported the event, and to the hard-working staff at the refuge who made it all possible.

A great day was enjoyed by all, the finale being a foam party for the children. Many youngsters have been involved in our educational programme, and they participated in our event with displays of dancing and other sport activities. Assistance required Please contact us if you can assist in any way on 922 778630. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can

call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the right-hand side. E-mail the refuge at teneriffa@ aktiontier.org or, for further details, visit our Facebook page: action tier Accion del Sol

THIS week, yet again, members of the public have found kittens in communal bins and contacted us for help. Three, two-week-old kittens were rescued on one occasion, and are now being bottle fed in foster care. On another occasion, the kittens were not so lucky and were dead by the time we arrived. These are not isolated incidents. We are contacted, weekly, about kittens disposed of in, and by, bins, and it’s very common here for people to dispose of unwanted kittens in this way. It is incredibly cruel, and often results in long, slow, painful deaths for them. A simple solution is to have pet cats neutered, but, sadly, despite this being a fairly cheap and easy operation, many owners do not have it done. If you have a cat who is not neutered, please contact us to discuss options and prices. Not only does it stop unwanted litters, it is healthier for both female and male cats, and can extend, considerably, their

life expectancies. Kittens We currently have more than 50 kittens in foster care. We can’t take more until we find homes for at least some of the ones we currently have. If you are looking for a kitten (or, as we recommend, two), then contact us to receive pictures and information of the latest availability. All black kittens have their injections, microchips and neutering paid for by us, and, if two kittens of any colour are adopted together, we pay for the kitten injections, microchip and neutering of the second kitten. There are no adoption fees, and all kittens go on a week’s trial so you can be sure you have made the right decision. We do not allow breeding of any cats adopted from us, so there is a contract of care to sign to say that the adopter agrees to the kitten being neutered and vaccinated when old enough. Contact us via our website www.cats-welfare-tenerife. com or ring or WhatsApp Maria on 646629129, seven days a week.

TO: Editor I AM a permanent resident of Tenerife currently living in Chayofa for almost five years. I retired from work in Scotland and moved here, as many do for the sunny climate and relaxed lifestyle. When we discovered our new home in Chayofa, we thought we had found the perfect retirement home. However, we did not realise that Chayofa has not been adopted by the Ayuntamiento, and that the consequences impact life in the village adversely. I have named some of them, but the Mayor, Jose Julian Mena, should know that both my husband and I voted for him and his party in the last election, in which he was elected. We voted for him as he specifically quoted in his advertising leaflets that he could “sort out the problems in Chayofa”. We are disappointed that, so far, we have not seen any improvements. 1. Condition of road into Chayofa from the Mojon roundabout This road is the main entry into Chayofa and the hospital, with heavy traffic including ambulances and buses. The tarmac surface has been in a terrible condition

K9 Animal News Bloom is almost two years old, and has been at the refuge since he was only three months old, after being found wandering the streets. He says: “I was scared and hungry until some nice people befriended me and took me to the refuge. I cannot remember why I was left on the streets; it was a horrible time, and I have shut it out of my mind. “I was very glad to

Subject: Chayofa

for a long time, but I understand now that plans are in place to see this repaired. 2. Condition of underpass from roundabout Entry and exit around Chayofa is via the underpass from the main Arona road. This bridge area has been badly defaced with graffiti for a long time. As it is the main entry and exit, it gives a bad opinion of the area immediately. Can we please have this bridge painted? Why not ask the management of Jungle Park to invest and employ a street painter to paint an animal mural on the bridge? Chayofa residents have to live with hundreds of taxis which drive along this road every day, taking holiday-makers to and from Jungle Park. I believe it is time Jungle Park paid Chayofa residents for this daily inconvenience. While talking to Jungle Park, you might also ask them to repaint the Eagle statue, which sits at the Mojon roundabout, because it has also been covered with graffiti for almost two years. 3. No left turn into Chayofa at tennis club from the south This has been an ongoing issue for many years. Apparently,

From: anonymous

funds are available for a roundabout, and the land has now been purchased to enable road changes to allow traffic to turn left at this junction. Why, then, are we still waiting? And when might we expect this work to begin? I suggest that some money could be saved by simply widening the road, and having a central lane in which to wait, safely, to turn left. Tenerife has many junctions with this feature, particularly in Las Chafiras, which seems to work well. Another option is simply to remove the “no left turn” signs and allow us to turn. It is illogical that 150 metres further on the same road, motorists are allowed to turn left at the children’s nursery. 4. The basura point at entry into Chayofa Upon entry into Chayofa from the tennis club (assuming you are arriving from La Camella), you are faced with the village’s recycling bins. This area is, constantly, in a dirty and hazardous condition. Recycling is left on the ground by the bins regularly and, when bins are emptied, the contents are often scattered across the area. A purpose-built, enclosed area should be provided to contain

the recycling bins, and to hide this eyesore from holiday-makers and residents as they enter Chayofa. If a wall could be built around the bins, it could also be painted with a friendly, welcoming sign saying “Welcome to Chayofa - please keep our village tidy”. Almost every village and town in Tenerife has a welcoming sign such as this. 5. Dogs When will Arona Ayuntamiento enforce the laws on owning dogs? Chayofa often appears and smells like one, large, dog toilet. Owners, persistently, do not collect their dogs’ faeces. With little rain to clean the streets, and high temperatures, this is not only unpleasant but also against established health and safety practice. Training and control of bad dog owners is necessary. It is Arona Ayuntamiento’s duty to make the laws known more generally by placing notices in the local papers, and by erecting signs and disposal bins around the village. Large fines for those people who allow their dogs to mess the streets and open areas would soon improve the situation. The salary for a dogpatroller would be

more than covered by the collection of fines. Interestingly, the Ayuntamiento of Granadilla de Abona has provided its residents of Los Abrigos, free of charge, with black plastic bags for the collection of dog poo. Bundles of the bags have been taped to lamp posts, and litter bins have been placed in strategic areas. What a good idea! 6. Chayofa’s lack of recreational areas Chayofa does not have any children’s public play-areas, no schools, no public sports areas, no communal area for sitting and no public exercise machines. No town square in which to hold festivals; no community hall and no church in which to hold marriages or funerals. We have no BBQ area or street cleaners and very little street lighting and pavements with no street waste bins anywhere (except the Basura). 7. Fibre optic communications. Mr Mena has recently said he considers the installation of fibre-optic cables a priority. With regard to Chayofa, only the main road, Calle Fatiguingly, and the communities directly from this road, have this option. Many other communities

I always come back when called, though. “I’m also very good when I am walking on the lead, as I know it's important to my people. So, please, do you have a place in your home and heart for me? Perhaps Mr Mena could persuade Movistar to install fibre optic from the entrance to Chayofa. and include the many communities that exist from the Tennis Club to Chayofa Alto. 8. Why is Chayofa neglected? It is not a small village; it has more residents than many other villages. We are a village of mostly Tenerife residents, who pay highly for the services that other villages take for granted but we do not receive. Where is the tax income paid by the residents of Chayofa being spent? Many of our Chayofa residents are very caring and proud people, who appreciate living in a clean and beautiful area. Presidents of the individual communities and their residents mostly do a good job of looking after their own areas - we have to! Imagine what could be achieved if all the leaders of all the Chayofa communities could get together to sort out our problems. Perhaps Sr. Mena could facilitate this? Give us some answers, please Mr Mayor. Better still, let’s see some action. 2pm? Four ways to prepare for Brexit

at blevins Franks

WITH Article 50 triggered, Britain is on track to leave the EU within two years. The June UK general election is unlikely to change this, as the two key parties have committed to honouring the referendum result. While we still have no certainty about how Brexit will affect expatriates in Spain, there are steps you can take today to future-proof your financial planning. 1. Consider securing your residency The two-year countdown is underway for current residency and freedom-ofmovement rules. While we can expect a fresh reciprocal agreement between Spain and the UK to protect expatriates in each country, the new rules may be less favourable than today. So, if you are still a UK resident, but want to live permanently in Spain, take steps now to secure your position. Once resident here, you secure the same tax

treatment as other Spanish residents. Non-residents, however, may face higher taxes after Brexit. When it comes to income tax, for example, Spain charges more for non-EU and nonEEA residents. Also, non-EU or EEA residents may not qualify for the generally-lower rates offered by the regional autonomous communities for wealth, succession and gift taxes. Regardless of residency, UK-source income remains taxable according to the UK/Spain double-tax treaty, which is unrelated to the EU, and therefore unaffected by Brexit. 2. Review your pensions The UK’s new 25% ‘overseas transfer charge’ could

indicate things to come, post-Brexit. Currently, expatriates in Spain avoid this tax if transferring UK pensions to eligible pension schemes in the European Economic Area (EEA), including Gibraltar. But many speculate that the UK government could use Brexit as an opportunity to recoup revenue from UK nationals abroad, with further ‘exit taxes’ on pension transfers. They could also change the rules to make it harder to take advantage of today’s high transfer values for ‘defined benefit’ (final salary) pensions. Consider acting now, before Brexit closes the current window of opportunity. However, ensure you take

specialist, regulated advice to avoid pension scams, and establish the right solution for you. 3. Diversify, diversify, diversify When it comes to investing, many expatriates favour British assets, like UK bonds or FTSE shares. This approach can overlook opportunities available elsewhere, and generate overexposure to UK assets. While markets have proved quite resilient to Brexit so far, we cannot predict how the UK economy will continue to react. In uncertain times like this, it is more important than ever to have a welldiversified portfolio. You should minimise risk by spreading investments across countries, currencies, regions, asset types and market sectors. By limiting your exposure in any one area, you are better placed to ride out market+pi turbulence – Brexit-related, or otherwise. 4. Look for currency flexibility With the fortunes of the pound and euro so tied up with Brexit developments, it is a good idea to reconsider the best currency mix for you. Living in Spain, ideally you should receive some income in euros to limit your

dependency on exchange rates. One solution is to use structures that allow you to hold investments in multiple currencies. In any case, you should regularly review your affairs to ensure your assets and investments remain suitably diversified and taxefficient for your unique situation. Not only can your circumstances change over time, uncertain times like this can also unlock opportunities. The ticking of the Brexit clock offers one more compelling reason to finetune your financial planning. As an expatriate, it is essential to understand the cross-border implications and be fully prepared, so you can continue enjoying your life in the Canary Islands, whatever Brexit brings. The tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices which are subject to change. Alcalá goes bananas!

THE third annual Banana Festival, organised by CIT del Sur, began in Alcalá on Monday, with the collaboration of Guía de Isora’s Tourism Department. It attracted many tourists to the area from Adeje and Arona, who enjoyed different products made with bananas from the Gabaceras brand. The event’s main objective is to give greater value to the agricultural sector, and, in particular, to the banana tree, trying to merge the two main industries of Tenerife, Tourism and Agriculture. It welcomed Edwin Toledo, a carver of fruits and vegetables, who showed people how to decorate and work with the various fruits

and vegetables. Following the success of the day, CIT Sur is now working on the next events to complete the Festival. Yesterday (Thursday), members were in San Miguel at the Casa El Capitán Museum, where the photographic exhibition

“Our wealth the Canarian Banana”, was inaugurated. On Sunday, the Farmer’s Market in Fasnia provides a tasting, and a performance by musical group Guatimac. And the Festival closes next

Saturday (27th May) in the tourist area of Troya, where there will be a Sculpture Competition, complete with bananas, folk groups and tastings, plus crafts and food stalls.

Grantchester

Sunday 21st May, ITV1, 21.00

Having left his Grantchester life behind to do some soul searching, vicar Sidney Chambers finds himself heading toward a Romani travellers’ camp in Lincolnshire. Having tracked down the culprit, Sidney tells himself he is there to retrieve Mrs Maguire’s life savings from the man who stole them but it soon becomes apparent, Sidney is just running from his old life and has no idea what he is going to do. Seduced by the intoxicating, welcoming community he finds himself in Sidney begins to wonder if he’ll ever return home. But murder is never far from Sidney’s door and when one of the community is killed, Sidney the ‘outsider’ is suspect number one. Cathy reaches the end of her tether and tells Geordie he has to leave the house. Devastated, Geordie heads to the vicarage but it surprised to find Sidney gone and a nervous Leonard spinning a cover story about Sidney going on a seaside holiday. Geordie immediately knows it’s a lie and presses Leonard into telling the truth.

Choosing a garage

Blonde ambition

By Emma

By Carl pattison from Robot

THERE’S nothing that brightens your hair more than a colour, and there’s nothing brighter than blonde. It lifts you up, and can change your look completely - for the better. Choosing the right shade can be difficult, but that’s why you have a stylist. They will guide you through the shade chart, advising you throughout the process. From a few, scattered

from Motorworld

foils to a whole head of hi-lites, Ombre blonde or the new “babylites” that look so natural, being blonde has never been so diverse. For those of you with paler skins, look out for ashy/baby-blonde tones. If you’re darker skinned, opt for more bronzy/honey shades. There’s a shade for everyone, and for

every skin tone, too. It’s up to you when it comes to upkeep; a few, scattered hilites will last months without retouching. If you go for a full colour or a large amount of hi-lites, then expect regular salon visits. If it’s a new look you’re after, and you’re wanting to complement that tan, then upping your shade a few notches will really work at this time of year. Consult us at Robot Hair Salon to find your ideal shade, with our free consultation service.

Not short on style By Carl Patisson THE heat’s here, temperatures are on the up, and summer fashion has hit the highstreets. Look no further for this season’s hottest and coolest look - shorts! Forget those which have all on show; this time around, shorts are classy and chic, and definitely leave all to the imagination. Shiny silks and floaty cottons will keep you cool and right on trend, if you choose the right shape for you. Don’t wear them too short - or too long,

31 CW

either; mid-thigh is this season’s length. Team up your shorts with vests and smart tees for your daytime

look, and dress them up with cropped jackets and this summer’s hot mulestyle shoes. Black is a favourite summer colour this year, great for teaming up with primary and pastel shades. Opting for printed shorts means keeping it simpler with the rest of your clothes. Don’t clash patterns; that’s a real fashion “no-no”. Remember to keep them stylish, not revealing, and you will have this summer’s hottest look all wrapped up.

WHEN deciding on who should repair your car, there are so many things to consider. For most people, the costs are the primary concern, with little regard being given to the facilities offered, experience, legalities etc. And, sometimes, these are not considered as being important at all. Garages in Tenerife come in all shapes and sizes, from main dealers to little “back street” garages - and all those in between. We are going to point out the differences, so that when you do need to use/select a garage, you make the right, informed decision. All garage premises are different, ranging from the up-market, high-end variety, (think BMW, Mercedes, Porsche etc.), down to the dingy (although perfectly practical), old-fashioned workshops. Which one should you choose, and why? Is a Garage legal? The first and most important thing to consider in Spain is whether the garage is legal. If it is, it will display, prominantly, a plaque with a

distinctive number, which is assigned by Industria. This is given once the premises and its owners/staff have adhered to very strict regulations, set out for this type of business. The older-style licences were identifiable by two letters, followed by number eg TF (identifiying that the garage is in Tenerife) 1234. This number is individual to that particular business premises, and types of work they are legally able to carry out. The old-style plaques showed various symbols that would identify what work the garage was authorised to do. For example, a spanner denoted mechanical work, and a hammer and paint gun denoted chapa pintura, or body repairs - as one would know it in English. The new-style plaques are similar, but have a slightly-different format, the numbers being, for example, 06 denoting the year, then A452 followed by eight numbers. Both are equally legal. It is important to note that any work carried out for an ITV retest that requires a invoice, HAS to be carried out by an Industriaregistered garage. If it

isn’t, the ITV station will not accept the repairs. In addition to this plaque, the premises must also have a licence for the removal of contaminated waste. This is clearly distinguishable by the logo which is an open, green box, with an arrow pointing in the top. This licence is not exclusive to a garage, and you may have seen similar plaques elsewhere in doctors’ surgeries, hospitals and large restaurants, to name a few. If a garage does not display a plaque, then it is prbably illegal with regards to the rules of Industria, the body concerned with this type of activity. That does not mean that the mechanics and their work is not, or will not be, to an acceptable standard, but it is important to bear this in mind, and choose carefully. Pricing and signs Again, the garage is obliged, by law, to display their hourly rate, the opening hours and various signs regarding safety of their staff and customers. For the latter, the “do not pass” sign and “no smoking” are those most-commonly seen. The garage’s insurance does not cover people not involved in the business, ie customers entering the workplace, because, in the case of an accident or injury, the insurance company would not be liable, so the garage must ensure that such signs are displayed. If a customer ignores them, it is not the garage’s responsibility in the event of an accident. If the sign says do not pass, stay out!

By Val Sainsbury YOUR body reacts to the way you treat it (including what you eat), and pain, cravings and changes in mood and energy all reflect the fluctuations of our health. But another unique way your body can communicate is through your hands, which can signal distress in a number of different ways, as a warning of underlying diseases or deficiencies. Pain in certain fingers might reflect nerve damage, while a black or blue colour in your hand might indicate problems with circulation. Numbness Type-2 diabetics are constantly exposed to high levels of blood sugar, which can damage nerve fibres, altering their sense of touch. It does this by interfering with nerve signals and damaging blood vessels, making it harder to get nutrients and oxygen to nerves. This is called peripheral neuropathy. These symptoms in your hands, as well as your feet, are early signs of Type2 diabetes. Other signs include: Cuts and sores that aren’t healing Dizziness Changes in digestion Urination abnormalities Altered sexual function Weight loss Blurred vision Fatigue Increased hunger Blotchy Red Palms (Palmar Erythema) This is a sign of a liver condition called cirrhosis, and non-alcoholic fatty liver. In cirrhosis, the inflamed liver sends extra hormones

19th May - 25th May 2017

A helping hand to check our health around the body, dilating blood vessels in the hands and feet which can cause redness. Cirrhosis is a condition where real tissue is replaced by scar tissue because of drinking too much alcohol, viral hepatitis, or nonalcoholic, fatty-liver disease. The scar tissue makes it difficult for blood to get through, and can cause severe trouble. If you have these blotchy red palms, you might also bruise and bleed easily, your eyes and skin might turn yellow, or you might also be overweight. Wrist and finger discomfort Pain in your wrist and fingers is a sign of carpal-tunnel syndrome. This sensation might go from a tingle, to the feeling of an electric shock, and, from time to time, the pain will ride up your arm. This syndrome is often developed by repetitive use or pressure on your median nerve, which passes through your forearm and wrist. Repetitive use of this nerve, or a pinch because of a wrist fracture, might lead to this condition. Black or blue finger tips This is a sign of Buerger’s Disease, a disease which comes from inflamed and swelled blood vessels. Tobacco use is frequently associated with disease, but

researchers aren’t sure why. Pain occurs when you use your hands, and the same symptoms may appear on your feet. You may also have painful sores on your fingers and toes. Hands tremour If your hands are shaking or numb, this could be a sign that you’re vitamin deficient, anxious, or tired. Your body is giving you a clear sign to fix your habits. Vitamins you might need are Vitamin E, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B6, and Vitamin B12.

Other signs of vitamin deficiency include fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, pale or yellow skin, irregular heartbeats, weight loss, or muscle weakness. Overly-white fingernails You might have an iron deficiency if the skin under your fingernails is consistently white, or, if you press on your nail, turning it white, it stays that colour when you let go. This means that your blood doesn’t have enough iron to make haemoglobin. You need this protein to carry oxygen to your tissues and muscles. People with this deficiency rarely realise they have it, so looking at your fingernails is a good way of knowing. Other symptoms of iron deficiencies are fatigue, pale skin, dizziness, cold hands and feet, and headaches. Complete lack of hand

movement. This is sometimes caused by a Brachial Plexus injury, usually developed from contact sports which damage the nerves of the shoulder, arm, and hand. They are injured by frequently stretching and compressing the nerve, which eventually tears away from your spinal cord. At times, tumours can also be the cause of this injury. This condition can cause a slight numbness, while the more-severe version doesn’t allow you to move your hand at all, and, usually, comes with severe pain. Conclusion Your hands might be able to tell your future, but not in the way fortune tellers use them. Looking for discolouration, numbness, or complete loss of control can tell you about your nervous system, your blood, and your liver.

Tasty lemonade! WITH the temperature on the rise here in Tenerife, we need to keep well hydrated. For a healthy change from fizzy drinks, try making this delicious lemonade. Drinking plenty of water: Increases your energy Decreases your level of fatigue Flushes out your toxins Aids your digestion and promotes regularity Promotes weight loss Supports your immune system Balances your body fluids Aids your kidney function Creates a glowing skin. But drinking plain water can be boring. Making

vitamin waters and lemonades by adding fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices to your water not only tastes good, but also adds extra vitamins, minerals and healing benefits. In this lemonade, the lime and lemon can help alkalise your body, aid your digestion and add extra Vitamin C for immune support. The ginger has antiinflammatory, antibiotic, antifungal and antiviral properties, promoting the recovery of practically any inflammation and ailment. Open-plan living areas

at Muebles Chic

THIS week, I have been reminded by clients about how easy it is to get lost when trying to get their openplan living spaces just right, and creating the right balance between the different areas. A typical apartment, here in the south of Tenerife, usually comprises an openplan living space with kitchenette and American-style breakfast bar, followed by the lounge area. Obviously, not every property is the same, regardless of the sizes and shapes of these spaces. If you have an open-plan living space, or you are planning on opening up an area to create one, by following these basic rules I hope to help you stay on the right track when making the perfect living area. Firstly, keep to the same colour scheme throughout the entire space; your choices should always complement each other. If not, things can get very complicated early on in the project! An easy way to start is to choose matching colours for the kitchen units, dining table and entertainment-unit, for example. Having these in keeping with each other makes the rest of the design a lot easier. When arranging the layout of the room, I would consider what

you want to see from each area, and to find out where everything should be placed. When designing for clients, I normally divide the room into three sections: kitchen, dining and living. The living area usually takes up half the space. Each area should be measured, to decide what pieces of furniture will be needed, and what will fit in the living space, for example:

entertainment unit, coffee table, sofa, occasional chair and side table. The perfect way to separate the environments is with area rugs; carefullyplaced ceiling lights, and lights in general, can also make a real difference. Apartment packs are also a great option to make everything fall into place, quickly and smoothly. Here at Muebles Chic, we can offer a variety of

complete packages to suit various budgets, all of which can be treated with the personal touch that each, individual property needs. In some cases, entire renewals aren’t always necessary - just a few changes in the right places. If you would like to see what options we can offer, either pop in and see us at Muebles Chic, call 922736448 or email muebles. chic25mail.com

Swedes are first to say farewell to home nest SWEDEN’S youngsters leave the family home younger than those in any other European country, with Spain ranking near the bottom of the table. Eurostat, the European Union’s statistics office, has worked out that the Swedes’ average age for leaving the parental household is 26.1 years. Meanwhile, Spain’s average age is 31.1 years, in line with Malta, with Slovakia (30.9), Italy (30.1) and Greece (29.4). And there is also a gender difference. Women across the EU, on average, leave the parental home two

years before men do. While cultural factors lie behind the statistics, such as the stronger role of the family in southern European countries, economic issues must also be taken into account. The correlation with unemployment figures confirms this: Greece, Spain and Italy top the list for youth unemployment in the EU, with numbers that double or even triple those of their northern partners. And that dissuades youngsters from venturing away from the family home. According to figures from the Emancipation Observatory at Spain’s Youth Council, a youngster needs to earn at least 1,809 euros a month to become independent

without incurring risks. That is where Spain’s labour market throws up insurmountable barriers: three out of every four Spaniards, between the ages of 15-24, work on temporary contracts, which stops the majority from reaching that salary level. The Youth Council also points to other obstacles in the way of independence,

such as high property prices, as well as a lack of employment benefits and grants. Also, social housing is scant in Spain, with one of the lowest levels of supply in Europe. All these factors, warn sociologists, are having a negative effect on Spanish youth, such as an extended adolescence and the

difficulty that youngsters can face by having to assume responsibilities, after so many years of relying on their parents. What’s more, Spain, along with Italy, is the EU country where couples wait the longest before having a child - over the age of 30, while the average number of births is among the lowest in the EU. This has a knock-on effect when it comes to paying pensions, given Spain’s ageing population. After Japan, the Spanish have the highest life expectancy in the world. This combination of factors has created a situation unheard of for decades: 2015 was the first year that deaths exceeded births in Spain since the Civil War, from 1936-1939.

Hope for holiday-let contracts By mariano zunino siri

Registered lawyer at the tenerife bar association

THE Supreme Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC) has declared void four provisions of the Decree 113/2015, which regulates Holiday Rental Agreements.

Among these provisions are articles that prohibit the use of accommodation services with tourist purposes, such as holiday rentals in tourist-area complexes, or those where there is a mixture of tourist and

residential apartments. The TSJC partially-activated the appeals of the claims, enacted by the Spanish Federation of Housing for Tourist Uses, and the National Committee for Markets and Competition. The judgement nullified many articles of the Canarian Decree 113/2015 for subordinating the delivery of documentation, for the beginning of the activity to the registration in a Registry. The TSJC said: “The aspiration of uses of property, according to areas that try to promote the different laws in tourist matters, is nothing more than that; an aspiration, and is far from being a reality.” But when you consider the inconsistencies that “city hotels must be located in cities, or rural tourism in the countryside”, then, according to the court, the Canary Islands Tourism Law does not

authorise the regulation to establish a form of tourist accommodation that can be performed outside tourist areas only, in residential areas. Excluding the offer of holiday homes in tourist areas, or mixed areas where tourist uses are predominantly located because they “lack legal coverage” within the Tourism Law, the Regulation

clearly contravenes the freedom of business, and the provision of services, limiting the tourist offer without justification. “The only plausible explanation for this cut-off is that it was made to favour the offer of traditional tourist accommodation products, mostly implemented in these tourist areas, and, thereby, violating free competition in

the provision of services”, said the Canarian Supreme Court of Justice. It also considers that the “Statement Responsible”, granted by the owner, enables him to start the activity from the day of its presentation at the Tourist Registry of the Autonomous Community, without waiting 15 days, as stated in the Decree. However, the judgement did not nullify the whole Decree, but only part of it. These are articles 3.2, 12.1 and 13.3m concerning the subordination of the delivery of documentation, for the beginning of the activity to the registration, and Subsection 3 of Section IV of Annex 2. The TSJC is still pending a ruling in relation to another four claims presented. But the Spanish Federation of Housing for Tourist Uses and the National Committee for Markets and Competition consider it to be a success.

Unfinished hotel leaves holiday-makers furious SCORES of British holiday-makers were fuming after discovering that their luxurious Mallorcan hotel hadn’t been completed in time. The AluaSoul Mallorca hotel, in Cala d’Or, should have opened on 1st May. But workmen fell behind schedule, forcing a big scramble among holiday companies to find alternative accommodation for incoming tourists. Some holiday-makers claim they knew nothing about the deal until they actually arrived on the island. Others, packed and ready to fly, said they hadn’t been contacted by holiday companies, which include Thomson. One customer wrote on Facebook: “This is disgusting. We leave for the airport in the morning at 5am. “No one at all has contacted me with regards to this

holiday. It is ridiculous, and I hope you will be offering compensation for all the upset.” Another angry customer received a call on the eve of her departure. “I got my call at 5pm last night

and I was due to fly out at 3pm the next day,” she said. “It’s appalling! They offered us a place in a lesser-rated family hotel. We said No, and so they said the only option was to cancel.”

Others described scenes of holiday-makers being left in tears. “I arrived on 2nd May, to be transferred to a family hotel after contacting Thomson’s and the hotel, who both assured me it would be open on

1st May,” said one angry holiday-maker. “Disgraceful customer-care, numerous people in tears today; you ought to be ashamed of yourselves.” Thomson Holidays told its customers: “We would like to apologise for the disruption caused, due to an unforeseen delay to the opening of the AluaSoul Mallorca. “Any affected customers will be contacted directly by our Programme Change team as soon as possible.” The company added that it would be contacting holiday-makers in order of departure date, and that those who send a private message would receive a reply within two hours at the latest. The four-star, adult-only hotel promised “five pools, a trio of restaurants and a spa, along with a beachfront location”. Its current room-rate is listed at 253 euros per person, per night, for halfboard.

Ladies’ Football

Tears of joy and despair WHAT a contrast between Tenerife’s two female football teams on a Sunday of raw emotions, as their season began drawing to a close.

Granadilla Egatesa Tenerife beat Levante 3-0 in their final home match of the season. And their El Medano fans said goodbye to sisters Noelia and Natalia Ramos, who are moving to Madrid to continue their studies and will play for Atletico Madrid. Meanwhile, in the city of Albacete, La Laguna’s Tacuense had to win and rely on other results to save them from relegation. But despite a gallant effort they went down 2-1. Granadilla have been lacking a bit of form of late, but they turned on the style to brush aside a Levante team

who included former home favourite Maria Jose Ayoze, cousin of Newcastle’s ex-Tenerife forward. Ayano Dozano opened the scoring after 22 minutes with a wellworked goal. Virgy was sharp when a rightwing cross caught the keeper on the hop. And she took advantage of her hesitation to double the lead as the second half began. The third goal came in injury-time and was a cracker. Luana launched the ball from halfway down the pitch for a cheeky chip that curled into the top corner. There’s one more game, at Santa Teresa this weekend, to wrap the regular season up, and sixth place is already guaranteed. But there’s glory to be chased in Madrid on 28-29th May as the top eight teams compete for the Copa del Reina (Queen’s Cup). Meanwhile, Tacuense, who have had a tough

season, enjoyed brief hope at Albacete as they took the lead at the start of the second half, Raquel pouncing on the keeper’s spilled save. But the home team broke their hearts by levelling and then scoring a winner with barely five minutes to go. Hopefully, Tacuense will return to the Premier League in the near future with renewed determination.

Santa Cruz lights up for Binter NightRun THE second annual Binter NightRun, through the Santa Cruz streets, takes place tomorrow (Saturday), as 2,500 athletes compete over distances of 5,000m and 10,000m. Santa Cruz Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez heralded the event on Tuesday, alongside Sports Councillor Verónica Meseguer, Binter Communication Director Noelia Curbelo, and Daniel González, Director of DG Eventos. Bermúdez said the Binter NightRun, which starts at 9pm, is “an event for Santa Cruz, because last year’s race left participants with a good feeling”. He added: “We were impressed by the impeccable organisation, and this year, expectations are rising and we expect everything to run as smoothly as it did in 2016.” Meseguer highlighted the event’s party spirit, saying: “The NightRun is adapted so that anyone can take part, whether in the most popular test of only 5,000m or the superior 10,000m. “We are convinced that Santa Cruz will have a very special night, and that participants and the public will have a great time with other activities and at the Ni 1 Pelo de Tonto concert, which

has been planned for them.” Curbelo said this year was extremely important “because Binter is 15 years old as a Canarian company, and the Binter NightRun helps us enhance our positive image. “We had a great welcome in Santa Cruz last year, and the fact that there are an additional 900 people registered this time means we are facing a long, fruitful alliance.” Finally, González added: “Despite the success of last year, our biggest challenge is this year. We want people to leave happy and experience a real party atmosphere on Saturday night in Santa Cruz. “There is a lot of work from all municipal areas and, this time, we are promoting the city because the race is being broadcast on Canal Plus Sport and Teledeporte TV channels. During the event,

competitors will cross the main streets of the city centre, starting and finishing at Avda Francisco La Roche. More than half the registered runners, 54%, are competing over 5,000m, while the remaining 46% (1,128), will take on the 10,000m, running two laps of a circuit designed by the organisers. As for the athletes, this year’s race has 900 more than last year, which is a 57% increase. The organisers limited it to 2,500 runners to assure the event’s quality, and to control its growth. In total, there 62% men and 38% women. More than 300 of the athletes do not live in Tenerife, and participants are arriving from several nations besides Spain, including those from Germany, Austria, Brazil, Italy, Jordan, Poland, the UK, Russia and Zambia.

Dreamers hold fast D R E A M E R S collected a further 10 points by beating Palms 1 in Week 7 of the Arona Foods Summer Pool League, while close rivals Treehouse could take just five against Gaffers.

Dreamers. It's all to play for! Palms 2, who are third with 45 points, can still surprise everyone and take the title. But they will need to collect maximum points and hope that other results go in their favour. Regardless of where they finish, though, Palms 2 are the only 2nd Division side in the league and have done themselves proud. Elsewhere, Exiles picked up all the points because, regrettably, Terrace were unable to put a team together, while Bluebell shared the points with Phoenix. The highest individual break is still held by Neil, with 27. With two weeks to go, will there be any change? Who knows? But Neil must be feeling extremely confident. The Trophies and cash prizes will be handed out at the AGM in a few weeks. And, with the table so tight at the top, the league could yet be decided on frames won.

So, for the first time this season, Dreamers have put some space between themselves and Treehouse. And, with two weeks to run, there will surely be another twist to the tale. Hammers who are joint second, beat Palms 2 and have Treehouse and Dreamers to play in their last two games, Dreamers have Bluebell and Hammers and Treehouse have Hammers and Terrace, so the Hammers, just five points behind Dreamers, could take the title if they beat Treehouse and

Return flights? Yes please! IT was only a few short weeks ago that we wrapped up another successful Oasis Fm Darts League campaign. But such is its popularity that we will be starting the 2017/18 seasona tonight (Friday)! Indeed, the league keeps going from strength to strength, and, with new teams joining us, it promises to get even better. Thirty-two teams, spread over two divisions, will kick-off at our new starttime of 8pm, at venues ranging from Los Abrigos, all the way up to Callao Salvaje. With new players of unknown abilities, it is a tough call to predict who will be chasing honours. But old-stagers such as Scruffy Macs, Pas O Nadas A , Phoenix Bar and Gaffers, will surely be in the Division 1 mix. Division 2, however, is anyone’s guess. Going on last season’s finishing places, Clouseaus could

be up there, and, maybe, one of the new teams … someone like the Buzzing Bs? We shall see. Of course, the chance of individual glory remains on the calendar, via the Picassos Pool Bar singles, doubles and trebles competitions, plus the everpopular Team Handicap Knockout, sponsored by Canarian Weekly. Dave Mac, our new Competitions’ Secretary, is also planning a Grand Prix-style, prize-money, knock-out event during the year, so watch out for more details later. Dave is joined on the committee by Treasurer Rob, the lovely Sheena and new-boy Martin, from Bar 180. Together with Chairman Chas, our new man at the helm, and solid support from sponsors Oasis Fm, we are sure everyone will enjoy another fantastic fiesta of enjoyment. So, let’s play darts!

Winning’s the best currency AS distractions go, the European Champions League was a pretty profitable one for Iberostar Tenerife. Not only did they win the trophy, but this week they were presented with a 500,000-euro by the organisers. League form dipped a little during the run-in to the European prize, but they tidied up the last two games with big victories to finish fifth. Last Thursday night, they stormed the citadel with their first-ever win on Barcelona´s court. It was a convincing 73-65 margin, with consistent scoring through all four quarters, despite being without injured Tim Abromaitis. An 13-18 reversal in the second quarter was as bad as it got, and the final two

sections of 15-21 and 20-17 sealed a magnificent night. Aaron Doornekamp burned brightly with 20 points, and Georgios Bogris gave sterling support with a dozen more. Then, on Sunday, there was another 5,000 full-house in La Laguna as they thrashed Manresa 84-51. The margin was all the more impressive because fringe players, given extended court time, responded in style. Ferran Bassas led the way with 14 points, Will Hanley scored 13, and Tariq Kirksay added further

12. Tenerife won all four quarters easily, crowned with a 18-8 finish. But it’s not the end of the season because the top eight teams now compete in a play-off championship. Unicaja are Tenerife’s first opponents, on Sunday in Malaga, with the return leg at home the following Friday. That will be followed, hopefully, by a two-legged semi and a final. There’s a big appetite for winning at the club, so they may well squeeze another trophy into their bulging cabinet.

CD Tenerife

Stumble on glory path By Colin Kirby

TENERIFE surrendered a twogoal lead and were stretched by injuries, yet they still returned from Huesca with a valuable point.

It means they are still on course for the promotion play-offs with just four games left. True, nerves are affecting all the teams at the top, but Tenerife’s belief is unwavering as new heroes emerge each week. There was another new formation up front, with Amath still sidelined through injury. January recruits, Tayron and Shibasaki, put in great displays. But the main man was Choco Lozano, showing a turn of speed and urgency which has hardly been his trademark all season. Just two minutes had elapsed when Tayron fed the ball to Choco, who powered down the right and scored a superb goal from an acute angle. Huesca were desperate to crash the play-off party and a blast of a shot brought the best out of diving

keeper Dani Hernandez. Alberto and Jorge were missing through suspension, but the changes worked well. Carlos Ruiz made some confident, clearing headers at the back, and Vitolo and Aitor Sanz were immense in midfield. Sastre, who committed a crude foul on Vitolo, was lucky to get away with just a booking. He didn’t feel so fortunate when Choco latched on to a deep pass, controlled the ball with a little nod and fired Tenerife to a 2-0 lead just before the half-hour.

UD Ibarra

Everything was going like a dream. Dani dealt easily with a high ball from a corner, Choco should have completed his hattrick but curled an easy shot wide, and Tenerife’s changing room must have been sweetness and light at half-time. But it all started going a bit pear-shaped in the second half. Full-back Camille went off injured within minutes, to be replaced by Inaki, who rarely gets a run-out. Huesca were forced to press forward to rescue their dwindling hopes, but

a header from a corner found Dani’s safe hands ready to receive. Choco was struggling after a knock and he departed, with Suso taking over on the hour. The shape and balance of the attack didn’t cope well with the loss of Choco, and Huesca could sense the tide turning. Raul, nearly cut in two by a vicious tackle, wasn’t quite the same for the remainder of the match, and Dani had to produce more heroics to keep the home side at bay. Gaku and Suso were creating some half-

chances, and it was good to see the former standing up to players much bigger than him. Spanish football is definitely toughening him up. Rauly pushed a Huesca player, stupidly, and the resulting Lazaro free-kick allowed Borja the chance to steal in and reduce the lead. There was some improvising going on in the Tenerife squad. Right-back Edu Oriol took over from Tayron, but he looked lost up front. And just when calm heads were needed, Tenerife let an attack disintegrate into an opportunity for Huesca, who switched play to the other end. Inaki went to challenge Lazaro and the striker appeared to dive. The penalty seemed harsh, but Samu placed it the other side of Dani to complete an unlikely comeback. Tomorrow (Saturday), Tenerife will need their suspended and injured players back as they host Levante at 6pm. The runaway leaders have clinched automatic promotion and may have lost a little hunger. But, either way, it’s a massive game for Tenerife.

CD Marino

Long road for Ibarra Marino’s easy wrap-up San Fernando 2 Ibarra 2

HOPES of a short-cut to Ibarra’s promotion campaign were scuppered by this result against Gran Canaria’s San Fernando, of Maspalomas. The El Fraile-based team finished fourth in their Tercera Division group. And, on Sunday, they host the first-round, first leg of a promotion play-off format that would puzzle Professor Stephen Hawking. The prize for winning at San Fernando would have been second spot, a first-round exemption, and a place in next season’s Copa del Rey (King’s Cup) against a higher league team. Ibarra, who gave it a good shot, went behind after 34 minutes, but they squared it almost immediately with a Manzi penalty. The hill got tougher to climb after a Cristian own-goal, and, despite a last-gasp, injury-time equaliser from Jorge, they had to settle for a draw. There are 18 regional

sections in the Tercera Division, and the top four from each are involved in the play-offs in home-and-away, knock-out rounds. First up for Ibarra are Santander’s Tropezon at 11am on Sunday, with the away leg a week later. It will take a huge effort by any team to negotiate all the hurdles for promotion to Segunda B, Spanish football’s third tier. But Ibarra are ready for the challenge!

THOUGHTS of what might have been, and next season’s hopes, were on the Marino minds as they closed their campaign with a comfortable 2-0 home victory over Estrella CF.

A poor start to the year saw the Blues slip out of the top-four, promotion play-off places, but they ended in upbeat mood with several younger players showing they are ready to push on next season. It was a slow starter, and Estrella hardly seemed bothered. Lolo made some headway for Marino, and Fran Delgado worked the right flank to create some teasing crosses that weren’t converted. Estrella seemed jittery and hesitant in defence, and it took the visitors 20 minutes to muster an attempt on goal. Even then,

CD Marino 2 Estrella CF 0 the finishing was woeful as Yerai dragged the ball wide with a clear target. Marino were spreading the ball around well, with not so many high balls this week, Amed ghosted through the Estrella defence and hit the post with a shot, and Adan was on hand to bury the rebound and grab the lead. Coly was denied the second goal when his crisp shot was pushed away by the keeper, via the bar. Saul Vera, who has been one of the big hits in the last part of the season, came on for Adan as the second half got underway, Vera, strong and always willing to trouble the keeper, makes chances out of nothing. Saavedra showed a clean pair of heels to the away defence and carved his way into the box, but there were no takers to

convert the final ball. Estrella found a bit of enthusiasm for a burst of activity, and Petar in the home goal, brought a rogue shot under control with ease. At the other end, Amed produced two good chances - one blasted wide and the other smothered by the keeper. Saul rattled the post with a powerful shot that left the Estrella keeper stranded, but he followed up with something special. A Lolo effort was blocked, and, when the ball came out to Saul, he picked out the top corner of the goal with precision. Aarsen, also among the young crop, was given a 10-minute run-out, and Saul was denied a second by a defender’s clearing header. So, a sixth-place finish for Marino … and lots to work to do during the summer break.
