Spanish PM must testify in person at scandal trial

PRIME MINISTER Mariano Rajoy has been ordered by the Spanish High Court to appear in person on 26th July as a witness in the so-called Gßrtel trial. The case is based on a far-reaching, kickbacks-for-contracts scandal, which has plagued Rajoy’s Popular Party (PP) for years. Continued on Page 3

Judges order Rajoy to attend trial personally Continued from Front The Spanish leader’s party had requested that he appear via video conference. But Rajoy, who had argued that security would not be tight enough in the court, will be appearing as a private citizen, rather than in his official role. Two of the three judges, who favoured the ruling, found the reasons cited by the PP for Rajoy to appear, via video conference, were not “consistent”. They “did not understand” why the party had argued that his appearance at the court, in the Madrid neighbourhood of San Fernando de Henares, would

TENERIFE Cabildo, inspired by Tour de France stars such as current champion Chris Froome and former champ Alberto Contador, is to sink more than seven million euros into making the island’s roads safer for cyclists.

This simple means of transport has increased in popularity during the last few years as an alternative to using private vehicles and public transport, and also as a sport. Amateur and professional cyclists use the access roads to El Teide as training routes, and, right now, Froome, Contador and their respective teams are preparing in the Parador de las Cañadas del Teide area for this year’s Tour de France, the most spectacular race of the entire cycling programme. With this in mind, the Cabildo has designed a

require a large deployment of public resources, especially as it is just 18km from La Moncloa. And though they never doubted Rajoy’s busy agenda as Prime Minister, the judges decided it was “not a hindrance for his appearance”. They also dismissed his claims that security would not be sufficiently high at the courtroom, arguing: “The security at the High Court in San Fernando has greater guarantees than those offered at other company headquarters and institutions in the Madrid region.” They pointed out,

specifically, that he had taken part in events, meetings and rallies involving the public during his election campaigning. Rajoy has, in fact, been criticised in the past for giving press conferences, such as this one, via videolink. The court did say, however, that it would respect Rajoy’s position as Prime Minister and would adopt “all measures that are necessary to preserve his institutional image”. His appearance will be the first time in Spanish history that a prime minister has appeared as a witness in a court case.

The Gürtel scandal has been a thorn in the PP’s side for years. The case involves a corrupt business network, which operated across six Spanish regions between 1999 and 2005. It was run by Francisco Correa, whose surname translates as belt, or Gürtel in German. The businessman was said to have cultivated relationships with PP officials, offering them gifts in exchange for government contracts in public works and eventorganisation. And, at the height of his power, Correa was known as Don Vito, after The Godfather character. With nearly 200 official

suspects, the trial has been broken up into sections to facilitate the investigation. The main trial began on 4th October last year at the Spanish High Court, with 37 people in the dock. In February this year, Correa, and two other leading figures in the case, were each sentenced to 13 years in prison by the Valencia region’s High Court. One of the investigation’s consequences involves the possibility of illegal partyfinancing by the PP. Secret accounts kept by former treasurer Luis Bárcenas suggest the existence of a “slush fund” within the conservative group.

Tour-inspired Cabildo’s 7m-euro cycling project

project which, officials anticipate, will run to an expected investment of 7.4m euros. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, said: “The project’s objective is a commitment that arises from listening and talking with cycling groups.” He added: “We want to

improve the quality and safety for cyclists, not only by building new infrastructure, but, above all, by adapting and improving existing roads.” These plans have been demanded by the cycling community at various meetings with the Cabildo in recent years to define this project.

“This is a growing community, increasing in popularity, and with new types of users,” said Alonso, who recalled Tenerife’s Strategic Investment Plan (MEDI). It is a huge venture, launched by the Cabildo to promote the economic and social development of

the island. And it includes a specific section for the improvement of cycling routes, with a strategic plan and a financial allocation of financial resources. “We have the 7,429,500 euros until 2021,” said a proud Alonso. These actions are all links in the same chain, and some are already taking shape. A week ago, the Cabildo approved the draft project for a bicycle lane on the San Andrés highway, connecting Santa Cruz to Las Teresitas. It is an important step in the programmed tasks, and the Cabildo is working closely with the Trafico (DGT) and the Cycling Federation to learn about which aspects can be improved, to enable cyclists to travel in safer conditions.

A mighty surge to boost women with disabilities TENERIFE Cabildo was in Adeje last week to co-launch the Magarza Sur project, which is an initiative to empower and enhance the personal development and social-inclusion potential of women with disabilities.

The project is driven by the Co-ordiCanarias organisation, which assists people with physical challenges, alongside Sinpromi, a Tenerife group established to protect the rights of those with special needs, plus the Adeje and Arafo Councils, and Hey!Participa. Cabildo Equality Councillor Estefanía Castro says similar projects in La Laguna and Santa Cruz have been successful, and adds: “Now, we’re bringing these activities to the South to meet an existing need for women with ‘functional diversity’ outside the municipal zones.” In particular, because, in

THE blame for British Airways’ IT crash, which caused untold travel chaos last weekend the world over, has been placed firmly on the head of the company’s Chief Executive, Álex Cruz.

Over 1,000 flights were grounded, and the 50-yearold Spaniard, who has 10 years’ experience in the industry, has been described as “controversial” and “beleaguered” by the Daily Mail. The newspaper says there are calls for the resignation of a man who outsourced hundreds of jobs to India in 2016. But Cruz, from Bilbao, has denied that this move caused the IT crash, which affected thousands of travellers over the weekend, and refuses to step down. The tabloid also says that he “tried to gag staff from commenting on the meltdown”. Yet Cruz admitted to Sky News that the cancellations and delays had affected 75,000 people, and he also said the problem was trig-

many cases, “disabled women are considered invisible”, she insists. Carmen Lucía Rodríguez, Adeje’s Equality Politics Councillor, spoke of the double discrimination suffered by women who have special needs. “The challenge and the obligation for public bodies is to do all they can to ensure a society that is

“Now, we’re bringing these activities to the South to meet an existing need”

equal and just for all,” she said. Natacha Afonso, Arafo’s Social Services Councillor, invited other boroughs to get involved, while Sinpromi’s Dulce Torres

said that now was the time “to break down stereotypes and prejudices”. Equality of opportunities is most important for women with special needs because they have been proven to

suffer more and increased discrimination, in terms of education and employment opportunities. And they are more susceptible to violence and abuse. The objective of the project is not simply to highlight the reality of women in this situation, but also to reduce discrimination and assist in personal development and self-esteem.

BA trauma? It’s all down to the firm’s Spanish boss

gered by a “power surge” at a local data centre. “I can confirm that all the parties involved around this particular event have not been involved in any type of outsourcing in any foreign country,” he told Sky News. Following astonishing scenes of airport pandemonium last weekend, the

company said that Gatwick was back to normal on Monday. At Heathrow, Britain’s largest airport, long-haul connections were also operating normally again. But short-haul flights within Europe from there were continuing to accumulate problems on Tuesday. Cruz has also faced criticism

that British aviation’s prime jewel should not have been put in the hands of a Spaniard. Iberia and BA merged in 2011 to create the holding company International Airlines Group (IAG), the sixth-largest airline group in the world by revenue. And IAG also owns Vueling and Aer Lingus.

Cruz took over BA in April 2016 after a successful career at Vueling, which he had headed since 2009. Before that, he worked at ClickAir, and as an industry analyst. But his handling of the weekend meltdown has not just been criticised by the British tabloids. A Financial Times editorial deemed his explanations to be “completely inadequate”. It also said that he should be ruthless with the subordinates involved in the chaos. But, as Chief Executive Officer, the FT added that he was, ultimately, responsible. Either way, BA is facing compensation claims from the huge number of stranded travellers, at Heathrow, Gatwick and several airports overseas, running into billions of pounds. A stringent EU regulation concerning compensation applies to all EU flights, so all BA trips within the European Union conform to the rule.

Madrid facelift planned - from offices in London BRITISH architect Richard Rogers and his team, from their London offices, have been awarded the huge task of transforming the Madrid skyline. His firm, Rogers Stirk Harbour+Partners, which operates from the 14th floor of London’s Leadenhall building, popularly known as The Cheesegrater, has won the Distrito Castellana Norte mega-project, and is debating how, exactly, the facelift can work. After several false starts, dating back more than a decade, the Spanish capital’s new look is back on track, with Rogers and Co aiming to renovate a huge swathe of the northern edge of the city, around Chamartín railway station. The plan is to establish a new business district, capable of attracting foreign investment, and, at the same time, create a neighbourhood that captures the spirit of the capital.

It must also provide a gateway to the mountains, which are just 50km away. Rogers’ partner Simon Smithson, who knows the capital well, having lived there for a decade while working on the T-4 extension to Barajas airport, said: “The first thing is to reclaim the area, which is a huge hole in the city that needs repairing. “It’s a lost area and one that affects connectivity in the north of the capital dramatically. Then there is the question of using Chamartín

for AVE high-speed trains. “Atocha train station is overstretched and there is no room for more trains. At the same time, Spain is emerging from a difficult Period, so this is an important project to tell the world that Madrid is back.” Rogers added: “The area around Chamartín has the potential to be the heart of the city. Cities have skeletons, a heart, a brain and hands. This project will reflect the latest transport trends. “But Chamartín needs to be sorted out, and the city

Radio Sur … for the Adeje people RADIO Sur Adeje, 107.9fm, run by the local council, has been meeting its public service commitment this month, with three outside broadcasts from different parts of the borough. The first was during the Adeje Rally, where the Viva la Vida programme was broadcast from Siam Mall. During the programme, the radio station shared the stage with a number of national and regional broadcasters covering the event. Last week the show was also on the road, with a special programme, broadcast live from Los Olivos Secondary School, which is marking its

25th anniversary. The school was also awarded Adeje Council’s gold medal this week for services to education in the borough. On Monday, the radio station broadcast a live edition from the Baile de Magos (street party) on the eve of Canaries Day, from the Plaza de España. Radio Sur Adeje 107.9fm has been broadcasting continuously since its inception in 1997, and is today recognised as an

information reference point for the South of Tenerife. Countless numbers of people have passed through the studio doors, many of whom are now working at regional and national level. More recently, the station has improved its online presence, earning listeners from all over the world. And, for almost five years, it has also produced the English language programme English Time (Thursdays 1-2pm).

needs to show that it aspires to be a major European capital.” Smithson said: “Our biggest challenge, to keep a business district alive outside office hours, is the most interesting part of the project. “We don’t want to start ghettos, and it is important to create mixed-use areas. It isn’t just about proportions between different uses, but also about the dynamics you create. Cities are chemical equations. “There is something particular about Madrid: it’s a mixture of work and pleasure, which gives character to its streets. And quality of life has to be a factor. “We would like to create a business district that says something about living in Madrid. For an international company looking for a place to locate, it must offer what other capitals offer, and then something of its own.” The partners have ideas of building six large skyscrapers, but, says Smithson: “It’s not a done deal. Tall buildings will be important, but the most important thing is

to create a vibrant business district with mixed use.” His business partner added: “Neighbourhoods in the north of the city, created over the last two decades, have been successful in providing housing for young families. They work well at that level, but they don’t work as cities. “We have to create a business district that says something about Madrid. We have to create spaces that invite people to live in them, in the way that Madrid people do so well.” Finally, Smithson said: “As for the wonders of the city, the Pardo (protected parkland to the north-west) is on the doorstep. You’ve got wild boar just 5km from the centre of Madrid! “There is a nature reserve which, at the moment, is difficult to access, but it would be wonderful to open it up. “Our vision is a green network that starts in the new national park in the mountains, is directed towards the city, and brings it almost into the centre.”

Brit goes free after beating up partner

LOCAL Police in Arona arrested a 51-year-old British man, said to have used domestic violence in La Camella, although his partner refused to take action. The incident took place at around 10pm on Monday, when neighbours told the emergency services they could hear a woman screaming for help. The suspect, who had a wounded foot and smelled strongly of alcohol, opened the apartment door to

police. The victim was in the bedroom, along with the couple’s young daughter. Her mum’s lip was bleeding and she had, evidently, been punched in the face, as well as having cuts and bruises on both arms. She said the man had beaten her and pulled her hair. During the attack, several objects fell to the kitchen floor, one of them causing a cut on the man’s foot. The woman was taken to the Guardia Civil police station in Las Americas to denounce the suspect, but she would not press charges.

Government debts spell more trouble

Debt warning: EU Economy Minister Luis de Guindos (left) and Finance Commissioner Pierre Moscovici

THE Spanish Government, which features in the EU’s corrective programme of the Stability and Growth Pact, has been given a stern warning about its high debts by the European Commission. It has been told that austerity will not end with the conclusion of the Excessive Deficit Procedure (EDP), which is a package of measures for member states whose public accounts are out of control. In a recent report on the Government’s latest Stability Plan, Brussels said that even though Spain was scheduled to emerge from the EDP in 2018, it would still have to meet debtreduction criteria for three more years. The problem is that there are several countries in Europe dealing with high

A BALE of hashish, weighing 30kg, washed up on Las Vistas beach in Los Cristianos on Tuesday morning. A group of bathers spotted the package on the shore and immediately notified the Local Police, who retrieved it. It was handed over to the Guardia Civil, which is investigating the origin. The bale was covered in small sea snails, which suggested it had been in the sea for a while. Meanwhile, officers will search the area in case more drugs appear.

debt-levels, and, politically, it would be difficult to apply corrective measures to all of them. Other EU member states also have debt-to-GDP ratios of around 100%. But the Spanish Government believes economic recovery will bring the public deficit down below 3% of GDP by next year, which would enable Spain to drop out of the EDP. As was the recent case with Portugal, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s administration would then have free rein to design its own policies and go back to doing things, such as lowering taxes immediately before a general election. But in its overview of Spain’s Stability Plan, submitted by Madrid earlier this year, the Commission warns that European oversight of Spain’s expenditure will not end with its departure from the EDP. Brussels’ analysis concludes that because Spain’s

projected debt-to-GDP ratio for 2018 is 98.5%, which exceeds the established target of 60%, the country would still be subject to arrangements to meet desired debt levels for three years following departure from the EDP. The Spanish Government believes economic recovery will bring public deficit down below 3% of GDP by next year. European treaties stipulate that member states with debt in excess of 60% of GDP must shave 5% off the excess every year. And since Spain is 40 points above target, it would have to reduce it by two GDP points every year … a demanding goal that would require a strict, sustained containment of public spending. Other EU member states also have debt-to-GDP ratios of around 100%, which makes it difficult to place so many countries under a specific, corrective programme.

Captured... couple who sold daughters for sex A BRITISH couple, who “sold” their under-age daughters to a friend so he could have sex with them, have been hiding out in a tiny shed for months to avoid justice. The man and woman, aged 54 and 59, used to live in Mallorca, but fled the island

after their sentencing last year for pimping out their children. The offences dated back to 2009. After spending months hunting the couple, Guardia Civil officers found them living in a shed, on the edge of a farm, in the Malaga district of Cártama.

The fugitives, arrested under a European Arrest Warrant following their conviction for the sexual abuse of minors, have been identified by the police as TLD, aged 54, and BSD, 59. They have since appeared before a court and have been remanded in prison.

Building your pension pot

You can see the amount of choices you have to take money from your pension pot. But to have those choices you will need to have first built up a pension pot. You might find yourself in one or more of the following circumstances, each of which could be the potential solution to increasing the size of the pension pot you have:

• You’re close to paying off your mortgage so may soon have further scope to consider an increase in pension contributions. • Your children are leaving home, easing some of your monthly financial commitments. • You have old pension plans that you may wish to take advice on, as to whether or not they may be better served within a new plan. • You’ve received some inheritance that you could consider the merits of investing into your current pension pot.

Do you know you get tax relief on payments you make to a pension pot? For a basic-rate taxpayer, this means it would only cost £80 to get £100 paid into your pot. The pension changes have had a positive impact on people’s feelings towards retirement and do give them more choices to help achieve the retirement they want. How you take advantage of the changes is up to you. But speaking to us can help you find out more about the changes or if your current circumstances mean you might be able to build up your pension pot.

Roaming Government charges crackdown on scrapped

reluctant floorclause firms

SPAIN’S leading cellphone company, Movistar, is playing catch-up with close rivals Vodafone by scrapping roaming charges from 15th June.

THE Spanish Government has installed a Monitoring Committee to oversee the public’s out-of-court mechanism for thousands of “floor clause” (clausula suelo) claims. This special body will oversee and evaluate compliance by credit institutions, such as banks, and urgent measures will be introduced to protect consumers on a matter approved in January by Spain’s Supreme Court. This new legislation implements the Royal DecreeLaw, approved on 20th January, which facilitated a channel by which consumers affected could, simply and swiftly, recover the illegal sums charged by credit institutions. And all free of charge! Íñigo Méndez de Vigo, Minister for Education, Culture and Sport, and

Government Spokesperson, said the new law had been ratified by the Lower House of Parliament, with broad support from the parliamentary groups. The Royal Decree, approved last Friday (26th May), covers the obligations, to which credit institutions must adhere. They are obliged to report on the applications made, on those that have resulted in an agreement and on those that haven’t. In addition, they must also report on any alternative

It means customers can make and receive calls for the same cost from anywhere in the European Union, along with Iceland, Norway and Lichtenstein. The move will affect prepaid customers, and those using cellphones as part of the “Fusión” fixed line, data and entertainment packages, offered by its Telefónica owner. Movistar’s announcement coincides with new roaming regulations set by the European Commission,

compensation measures, other than cash returns, they have offered consumers, and on the system implemented to guarantee prior notification to consumers. The Committee will be in charge of gathering and evaluating the information, which will be transferred to the Bank of Spain. And it will publish a halfyearly report, assessing the degree of compliance by banks and other lenders with the out-of-court claim mechanism.

Why air-steward’s song is on top of the world!

Motor thieves spread their ‘talents’ all over THE Guardia Civil, in conjunction with National and Local Police, who smashed a gang on the mainland involved in stealing motor vehicles, also arrested 25 suspects. The probe began when officers realised that various quad bikes and motor-bikes had been stolen, along with several burglaries taking place at a number of isolated

houses. The forces concluded that the thefts were being carried out by members of a family, living in various locations. It meant that nine simultaneous raids had to be made in Malaga Province and Seville, which netted a huge sum of loot. The officers’ collection, following the raids, included 28 vehicles, more than 100,000 euros in cash, a revolver with ammunition, four airguns, around one kilo of marijuana and 200gms of hashish, precision scales,

which, while not fully ending charges for using a cellphone within another EU member state, will reduce them considerably. Spain’s other major operators must also apply the new rules. But Vodafone, anticipating the change in law, has already ended roaming charges for its cellphone customers, both for calls and data - and not just within the EU! It also includes the US, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Turkey, Albania and Lichtenstein. The British-owned operator has already completed its roaming policy by ending charges for pre-paying customers on its Vodafone Yu, Vodafone Internacional Voz, Vodafone Internacional Smartphone and Vodafone Fácil services.

numerous gardening and agricultural tools, high-end watches and motor-cycling equipment, which came from at least 30 robberies. Some of those arrested were known to be expert mechanics, and it is understood that many of the stolen vehicles were stripped down and their parts sold as spares. Between them, the suspects were charged with belonging to a criminal organisation, armed robbery, possession of illegal weapons, theft of vehicles, document fraud and receiving stolen goods.

A WARBLING air-steward, trying to persuade passengers to buy Ryanair scratch cards by belting out his own version of the Spanish hit song Despacito, has gone viral. Javier Otero has probably become the best-known cabin-crew member in Spain after wowing passengers on a flight from Gran Canaria to Seville with his rendition of the catchy, Luis Fonsi song. The 29-year-old from Cadiz, who has been working for the budget airline since early 2016, said he was stunned by the reaction he got after changing the lyrics from “Despacito” to “Dos Euritos” (two euros), which is the price of the ticket. “Ryanair gives us the freedom to sell the products using our own sales strategy,” said Javier. “And we try to make it so that even if the passengers don’t buy, at least they are entertained.” He added: “During one flight, I came up with my version and sang it for my boss, who loved it. But I had no intention of actually singing it over the intercom.” However, on his next flight,

the captain, and his cabincrew boss, pressed him to make his singing debut, in the belief that it would go down well with the passengers, who were mainly Andalusian. The passengers, via the online clip, can be seen thoroughly enjoying the performance, with some jumping up to dance. “Everyone congratulated me as they left the plane,” said Javier, who, after uploading the video to his Facebook page, soon discovered that it had been watched nearly four million times. But he won’t reveal whether the song has boosted the scratch-card sales during the flight.

Giant muggers terrify tourists TWO African men, described as “giants” by terrified British tourists, have been arrested in Magaluf, Mallorca. They are suspected of committing a string of violent muggings using a technique police call the “bear hug”, which involves squeezing their targets so hard they are “nearly asphyxiated”. At least three cases have been reported, but local media suggest that more will emerge. The trio are from Senegal and Nigeria, and the biggest, described as 6ft 6in tall with “arms like Hercules”, remains at large. The gang have already spent several months behind bars after carrying out 26 similarly-violent attacks in Magaluf last summer, but

they were released from prison some weeks ago. Last week, three British holiday-makers reported that they were assaulted by African “giants” which led to the new arrests. All three attacks were identical, the thieves striking as booze-soaked revellers returned to their hotels in the early hours, after a night drinking on the Punta Ballena party strip.

Lad is rescued after sea-dare

A BOY of 12, who jumped into the sea as part of a bet he made with his friends, found himself in trouble, until a Local Police officer came to his rescue. The incident happened in an area known as “El Penitente”, in Puerto de la Cruz, and, fortunately, the officer spotted the

boy, went straight in after him, and stayed with the youngster. They were both pulled out by a local fisherman, who, after witnessing the drama, immediately got in his boat and rushed out. Happily, the boy, although in shock, was still in perfect health.

After sneaking up on their victim from behind, one of the assailants holds him in a tight, bear-hug, so that he is unable to breathe, while a second attacks with punches from the front. The third man is responsible for grabbing wallets, watches, mobile phones, and any other valuables. Police say they have arrested two men, both of “imposing stature”, but at

least one other suspect is still at large. They believe other boozy Brits have been targeted by the same method, and three other similar cases are being investigated. A police spokesman said: “Everything happens so quickly, and the assailants are so burly that the tourist cannot offer any resistance.” Investigations are continuing.

Youngster sparks warehouse blaze A TEENAGER has been arrested by the Guardia Civil, charged with starting a huge fire in an Almerian warehouse in the fishing town of Adra. The 15-year-old is believed to have torched a Chinese bazaar on an industrial estate, destroying the building. It took firefighters several hours, and a great deal of manpower, to extinguish the blaze, after customers and workers had been moved to safety. Two trapped youngsters were freed as firemen searched the premises before tackling the flames. The alleged arsonist is said to have poured lighterfuel from disposable cans found in the warehouse on a mattress, before setting it alight. The blaze soon spread out of control, causing damage estimated at 500,000 euros. Fortunately, there were no injuries, although one woman required urgent medical attention after a panic attack. The teenager, who has been reported to the juvenile prosecutor, faces serious charges of arson and property damage.

Chancer grabbed posh handbag from car seat A SEASONED criminal, with an extensive police record, was arrested in Santa Cruz for stealing a designer handbag, containing goods worth around 2,500 euros, from a car. The 36-year-old man, who noticed that the owner had left the bag on her convertible’s passenger seat while she got out to throw rubbish in the bins, simply helped himself. It contained a designer purse and personal documents, jewellery, a

high-end mobile phone, a watch, two pairs of glasses and nearly 300 euros in cash. Luckily for the owner, Santa Cruz National Police

were patrolling the area, in Calle Clemencia Hardisson, when they noticed a man running down the street clutching a handbag. The officers chased him, but he ditched the bag in a bin and ran off in another direction. The cops soon caught him, however, some 200m down the road, and retrieved it. Once their statement was processed, along with the thief, the incident was placed at the disposal of local magistrates.

Trunk call by pupils to Canarian schools PUPILS from the 4th Year at Luis Álvarez Cruz Primary School, in Las Galletas, launched a fascinating initiative on Monday which will target schools throughout the Canaries.

It has the backing of Arona Council, and the children plan to raise awareness about the importance of preserving the natural environment, using a trunk that will be empty to start with. It will circulate schools for a year, and will fill up, bit by bit, with contributions from each establishment, either in the form of stories, small murals, photographs, poetry or recycled material. Teacher Carmen Rosa Torres devised the plan after visiting Arico’s waste

disposal plant with the Las Galletas kids earlier this year. She noticed how the mountains of accumulated rubbish affected the pupils, aged nine and 10. “They were amazed, and, seeing the look on their faces, I started thinking about what we could do to encourage recycling and generate greater environmental awareness,” said Ms Torres. The trunk left the Las Galletas primary school on Monday, and its first destination was the municipality of Ingenio, in Gran Canaria. It will contain just two stories about the environment and two murals, but everything that goes in the trunk is duplicated because each school will keep a copy of the contribution made by the previous centre. Hopefully, when it returns to Las Galletas in 2018, it will be

packed with contributions from every school visited. “We want to exchange knowledge, experience and advice, and we aim to raise awareness and educate children about the threats on the planet,” said the teacher. “These include the ozone deteriorating, seas and oceans being destroyed or polluted, and the waste of water and energy.” The Las Galletas centre has already been in contact with the Breña Baja primary school in La Palma, along with other schools in Tenerife, mainly in the South, who are all keen to play their part in the project. Ms Torres added: “There will be time to think about what we will do when the trunk returns to the school. The idea is to do something nice, like write a book, or have a gathering of pupils.”

NEWS IN BRIEF ‘Drowned’ woman saved

A FEMALE pensioner was resuscitated at El Medano last Saturday morning after fears that she had drowned. Lifeguards alerted emergency services that they had rescued a 72-year-old woman in cardiac arrest, and that they were performing CPR on the beach. Paramedics, who confirmed she was still in cardiac arrest on arrival, gave her advanced CPR, which revived her. After her condition was stabilised, the woman was transferred to Candelaria Hospital in a critical condition.

Car victim knocked over

A WOMAN was badly injured after being knocked down by a car in Parque de La Reina in the early hours of last Sunday. Paramedics were called to the scene and stabilised the 44-year-old, who suffered trauma to her head and face. She then received further treatment at Hospiten Sur.

Cultural centre catch-up

AFTER three serious inspection days in February, during which four inspectors examined every aspect of Wingate School, it has been recognised internationally by the Schools Inspection Service (BSO) as a British education establishment abroad, fulfilling all the necessary requirements. An elated Colin Macrae, head of the Cabo Blanco school, said: “This is a fantastic achievement, since only 5% of the British schools abroad apply for the BSO recognition, and many do not qualify. “In addition, we have again been accredited by the National Association of British Schools in Spain (Nabss).” The survey highlighted the education quality, from kindergarten through to

six-year-olds, noting: “The academic level of students is up to, and often above, that of students in England.” In fact, the results obtained during Wingate’s 2016 IGCSEs and A-level exams were “particularly good”. And the school praised five students who received a certificate of recognition from the Cambridge International Board of Examinations: three for having achieved the highest mark in Spain in English and in business studies, and two for achieving the highest score in the world for the Spanish exam. The final report emphasised that its teaching and evaluations were good, and sometimes outstanding. It also said the education and results obtained by the students were good in all departments throughout;

that teachers were well trained to support students, with English as a second language, and that the students’ welfare, health and safety at the centre were good. The report added that students insisted that bullying was not a problem at the school. But if it did occur, the staff took care of it quickly. Wingate School was founded in 1982 by Margaret Green and her husband, Christopher, who was the owner and director until his death, in October 2014. He actually became its first headmaster two years after the opening. The school was launched with a single class of just seven students, but it has gone on to attract a total of 420 students, featuring more than 20 nationalities.

WORK on the second phase of Playa San Juan’s new Cultural Centre, left partiallybuilt in the recession, should be restarting next week. It will take around eight months, and the building, which will now have new rooms in the basement, will be connected to the town square. The overall budget is 1,494,975 euros, of which the Cabildo is contributing 1,345,477. Guía de Isora Council will be responsible for the remaining 150,000 euros.

Home blaze kills family

A FAMILY of four, including two children aged three and five, have died in Bilbao after a devastating house fire. Nine people have also been hospitalised, with two in a critical condition, while 12 were treated at the scene for minor burns or smoke inhalation. The three-storey, residential building, in the Zorroza area of the Basque city, was completely gutted, and the danger of collapse complicated removal of the bodies. It was extinguished two hours later, but there were difficulties identifying the victims because they weren’t all registered with the Spanish authorities.

Hen party’s plane ban for ‘offensive’ T-shirts A SOCIAL worker, set to be married in August, said her hen party was “ruined” because her group of 18 friends were forced off a flight to Magaluf over their novelty T-shirts. Leicester bride-tobe Emma Green, 35, and her companions were all wearing tops carrying the slogan “b*tches on tour”. But airline Jet2.com staff deemed them offensive and told the women to leave the plane, which cost them an extra £2,000 for alternative flights. Police were even called to the East Midlands airport scene to resolve the dispute, but Miss Green said: “We are all professionals and

we were not making trouble. We just wanted to go on holiday to Magaluf, but, after this experience, part of me does not want to get married now.” The women, aged between 35 and 60, were initially told to cover up their shirts as they went through security and on to their flight bound for Palma, Majorca. Then, on the plane, staff took exception to the shirts again and eventually told them to leave the flight. Emma, said at their Magaluf hotel: “It has completely ruined the whole experience. We have lost a day already, and everybody is really tired from flying in from different airports. Some didn’t land until 2am. “‘Nobody even spoke to me about the T-shirts. The first I knew about it was when were being kicked off the flight.”

Emma, set to marry fiance Aaron Bateman on 26th August, added: “The police looked bewildered by it all - I think they knew it was ridiculous. We are all professional women, mainly in our late thirties and forties. I work with mentalhealth patients and I am not a troublemaker. And we have a couple of lawyers with us. “We did not deserve to be treated like we were and would have covered up on the plane if we were all asked to do so. But the word b*tch is a pretty mild curse as far as they go, and I hardly think the T-shirts were that offensive in the first place.” A Jet2.com spokesman said the passengers were told they were not permitted to fly while wearing the offensive shirts. He added: “The group

were asked to either wear different attire or cover up the offensive language, and were reminded of this on numerous occasions, by us and the airport police while in the

departures area. “Once in the cabin, and in the presence of families and young children, several members of the group decided to ignore these repeated warnings, at

which point our crew took the decision to remove them from the flight.” The airline said it was left with “no choice” but to remove the women.

Our special cow should be saved A PETITION to safeguard an unregistered cow from being killed by Catalan authorities has amassed nearly 200,000 signatures. The four-year-old bovine, Margarita, gifted to a farmer in the town of Tortosa as a calf, has occupied the same field ever since. And she has become genuinely popular with locals, who feed her with grass. But regional agricultural officials say she has never been registered, has no veterinary records and must be

slaughtered under EU directives. The heartless deadline is set for today (Friday), and the owner of the land is facing a 3,000-euro fine for failing to obtain the required documentation. But Animal Rights group Hogar Provegan, behind the online campaign, has also organised new

accommodation for Margarita at a local animal sanctuary. The group’s officials say: “There is a law in the European Economic Community that seeks to ensure that all unidentified cattle are killed. “But Margarita has never, and will never, be used as livestock. She’s not to be exploited, but she’s a pet.”

Battered security guard highlights lack of police

A PRIVATE security guard, working at last Saturday’s La Camella fiesta, lost several teeth after being punched in the face when trying to break up a fight in the main town square.

Local Police couldn’t help because they were busy at the time, arresting a man who had broken a woman’s nose and injured her face. As is common most nights in the municipality, there were just three Local Police officers on duty to cover the entire Arona municipality, which has 90,000

habitants. That’s because they refuse to work overtime, and Arona Council had to hire private security to cover the La Camella event. Local Police officials are still waiting for

Arona Council to fulfill the promises it has made. Meanwhile, they cannot fathom why the public’s safety is maintained at local fiestas by hiring private security to mask the shortfall of officers.

‘Blindfold’ Bertha is Rubik sensation

A SPANISH woman has broken the European record for completing a Rubik cube in the fastest time … wearing a blindfold! The puzzle, which had millions the world over scratching their heads throughout the Eighties, took Berta García Parrain just 20.38 seconds to solve during the recent Rubik Cube Open Championships in El Escorial, near Madrid. She beat more than 90 other competitors from all over the world, with participants from Hungary, the US, Peru, Poland, Greece, China and Romania competing in 15 categories. The top three competitors were all Spanish: Manuel Prieto solved the cube in 10.29sec; Alberto Pérez de Rada was second in 11.61sec and Rafael Rodríguez just behind him in 11.74sec. But Berta’s achievement really was spectacular because she finished the Rubik puzzle in 20.38sec without even looking at it. She already held the national blindfold record of completing a Rubik cube in 21.44sec, and has now beaten her own time, as well as setting the European record. On top of that, Berta’s time is also the third-fastest blindfold effort ever recorded. The oldest competitor was Jesús Masanet, aged 56, and six-year-old Alejandro Fernández was the youngest.

Help Bank’s basic touch of feminism

ADEJE Council’s municipal “Help” bank has received many feminine hygiene products, following a campaign to encourage people to donate products to women suffering economic hardship. The initiative, led by the Equality Politics Department, was overseen

by Councillor Carmen Lucía Rodríguez del Toro, who said: “For too many people, these products are not considered to be part of a person’s ‘basic needs’. “But we recognise that they are in Adeje, and that all women, from about 13 to the age of 55, will need to use these products once a month. “This constitutes an important, economic cost for a family, in particular a family in economic difficulties, and there continues to be too

many inequalities regarding women. These products are not cheap, and, for many, it’s a real problem.” She added: “So now these products will be available at our Help Bank because we know they form part of every woman’s basic needs.” Also attending the press event to announce the end of the campaign were Health Protection Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo and Isabel Fernández González, Social Welfare Councillor.

Representatives from those who helped collect the items came from Wingate School, Diamond Resorts International, the San Sebastián co-operative, Solidarios Canarios, Asgote, the Callao Salvaje Pharmacy, Sercaigua Canarias, the local libraries’ network and Adeje’s cultural centres, plus Costa Adeje Tourism Development Centre (CDTCA), and the Centro de Atención a la Diversidad Funcional Los Olivos.

Systematic corruption hurts our basic rights TRANSPARENCY International, Europe’s international corruption watchdog, has laid into Spain because of its “systemic corruption”. The watchdog said in a statement: “Few aspects of public life in the country have remained “exempt” from corruption. Spain has seen one of the fastest declines on the organisation’s annual Corruption Perceptions Index, slipping seven points since 2012 and now scoring worse than most Western European democracies with 58. “Corruption in Spain distorts policy-making and hurts people’s basic rights for the benefit of a few,” said José

Ugaz, Transparency International Chairman. “Just looking at recent scandals, like the Pujol case in Catalonia, the linkages between the ruling People’s Party and the construction group OHL, the Gürtel case, the Bankia fraud and Rodrigo Rato, gives a sense of the scale of the problem. “This does not need to remain this way. Spain has the democratic maturity, the institutions and a vibrant population and can reverse this trend and stand up to corruption, including grand corruption,” said Ugaz. The body has called on the Spanish Government to act im-

mediately, saying that its first move should be to reverse the appointment of the anticorruption prosecutor, who has been called into question because of his links to the Partido Popular. Ugaz added: “The institutional and legal infrastructure for preventing corruption and punishing corrupt acts needs to be improved in dialogue between the government, political forces and civil society. “It is urgent that the judiciary operates in a professional manner, free of political intervention, so we can start seeing timely and effective sanctions for those responsible for corruption.”

Gem thefts at Goya Awards

THE Spanish Film Academy has reported the theft of jewellery worth 30,000 euros during last Saturday’s Goya Awards ceremony in Madrid. While the industry was busy celebrating its equivalent of the Hollywood Oscars inside a local hotel, thieves broke into one of the rooms and made off with the loot. The robbery took place inside the Hotel Marriott Auditorium, near Madrid’s Barajas airport. And, say police sources, the gang found, in the room, items on

loan from Suárez, a prestigious jewellery store. Their haul amounted to four pairs of cufflinks, a ring and a pair of earrings, with a market value of 30,000 euros. The costly gems were

kept in the wardrobe department, and there were no special security measures to safeguard them. The owners, who realised the jewels were missing at around 10am on Monday, reported their disappearance later that day at the local police precinct. A second theft was reported by a cameraman covering the ceremony for state broadcaster TVE. He is missing several zooms and memory cards, which he put down briefly during the evening.

Police hunting down the Balearic boozers GUARDIA Civil commander Jose Domingo has revealed that around 3,400 drivers in the Balearic Islands - Ibiza, Formentera, Mallorca and Menorca - tested positive for alcohol last year, and a further 700 people failed drug tests. The figures were announced as Mallorca prepares for a record

number of hire cars on the roads this summer, with around 100,000 vehicles expected. Domingo said: “During 2016, we did more than 130,000 alcohol tests. That is a lot, and we have detected a lot of repeat offending … people we have stopped up to four times for drinkdriving.” He added: “One of the big problems is driving under the effects of drugs, but we are increasing our random

checks massively.” There are around one million cars and 150,000 cyclists on the Balearics’ roads, and, said Domingo: “One of the big problems we have seen, mostly, is people speaking on mobiles, or sending messages on WhatsApp. “It is so dangerous because distraction causes 40% of accidents, and we see many drivers using their mobiles to check Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.”

Witnesses trap burglar

GUARDIA Civil officers arrested a 31-year-old man of no fixed abode, believed to have committed robberies in Costa del Silencio.

Local witnesses told the Guardia that he had scaled a two-metre-high wall to reach the properties there. He also gained access

to another home, taking valuables worth 800 euros. The witnesses, who said they saw the thief enter the property, trapped him inside until the officers arrived and arrested him immediately. They retrieved various items from him, including a laptop, two mobile phones and two watches. He was referred to the Arona Courts, along with a Guardia Civil report.

Any room on top? ARIANA GRANDE will be joined by a host of stars for a tribute concert in aid of the victims of last week’s bombterror attack in Manchester Arena. Anyone who had tickets to that show is entitled

to free tickets to the One Love gig, at cricket’s Old Trafford ground, which caters for 50,000 people more than double that of the Arena. The new concert features Justin Bieber, Coldplay, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Usher, Take That and Niall Horan, along with US teen-idol Ariana, last week’s star attraction, who

is anxious to raise funds for the bereaved and those injured by the suicide bomber. It will also be broadcast on BBC Radio and Capital Radio networks, as well as being available to watch live on BBC One, between 6-9pm on Sunday. The show will also be streamed with a digital partner worldwide.

THE driver of a nineseater van, caught carrying 27 Romanian passengers in Santaella, Cordoba, has run out of luck with the Guardia Civil. An official statement says the vehicle “failed to respect” a stop sign and was pulled over by a traffic patrol. As officers approached the

Ford Transit, they were horrified to see that 14 people were occupying two rows of seats, each designed to carry three adults. And when they opened the back of the van, they discovered 10 others, some of whom were standing. With those in the front seats and three children, the final passenger count was 27. The driver and owner of the vehicle have both been charged with road-safety offences.

Cats Welfare News

We'll beat the charity cheats WE have just had a week of highs and lows. Lows have been the number of sick and injured cats we have taken in. There seems to be an epidemic of little, orphan kittens at the moment, many of them with cat flu and injuries. We try our best to never turn kittens away, but it's incredibly difficult with the limited resources we have. Another low has been the amount of thefts from our charity shop on San Blas in Golf del Sur, which is our main source of income. Not only have clothes and shoes been stolen, but also a day's takings from behind the counter. It's incredibly distressing for all our volunteers, who work tirelessly to raise funds. A till has been donated to us, and we have CCTV on order, which should help. Highs have been the amount of kittens we have managed to rehome. Last year's figure was 349 cats and kittens, and we are well on track to

beating that this year. We have so many supporters of our work, and we are grateful to each and every one. If you would like to help us, our bank and PayPal details are on our website http://www.cats -welfare tenerife.com/donation Cat of the week Nimaatra (she looks like an Egyptian Queen) was found on the streets, several months ago, wearing a flea collar, so she’s been someone’s pet, but no one has come forward to claim her. We have now had her in foster care for a number of weeks, so we are looking for a home for her. She’s been spayed, is leukaemia and feline-aids negative, has a microchip and is vaccinated. Can anyone give her a chance? Message us to ask questions or to meet her. Kittens If you're looking for a kitten (or, as we recommend, two), then contact us for latest availability. All black kittens have their kitten injections,

microchip and neutering paid for by us, as does the second kitten if you adopt two of any colour. There are no adoption fees, and all kittens go on a week's trial. We do not allow breeding of any cats adopted from us, so there is a contract of care to sign to say that the adopter agrees that the kitten will be neutered and vaccinated when old enough. Contact us via our website www.cats-welfare-tenerife. com or ring or WhatsApp Maria on 646629129, seven days a week. Our shop Items in good condition can be dropped into the shop on San Blas in Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 106pm, Saturdays 10-4pm. If you don’t have transport, or have large, bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 636590557, and he will arrange collection from you.

Meet Samantha SAMANTHA is a loving and gentle girl who, six months ago, was abandoned overnight at the refuge by her previous family. She says: “They didn’t explain why they left me, and I worry that it's because I did something wrong.

“My people at K9 say that's very unlikely, as I am such a friendly, clever and wellbehaved girl. Everyone is very good to me here, but I do find being in the refuge very difficult at times. “I am quite a sensitive soul, and don’t like being amongst so many other dogs. It can be noisy at times, and a little stressful for dogs like me. That’s why I so want to find my loving, safe-and-secure, forever home soon. “I share my kennel here with my friend Ghost, and we get on very well. It’s not that I don’t like other dogs, I just get a little frightened around so many of them. My walkers at the refuge say I am a joy to walk with. “I think this is because I am very good on the lead, and off. I also love to learn new

things, and to run around and have fun. I always come back when called, though, because I know that is what a good dog does. “Please, do you have a place in your home and heart for me? In return, I promise to be the best dog ever. I’m only around two years old, so we would have years of good times together.” If you would like to meet Samantha, please get in touch with us in any of the ways mentioned below. UK inheritance-tax reforms By Paul Montague at blevins Franks

THE tax year in the UK, which started on 6th April, introduced a new Residential Nil Rate Band for inheritance tax.

Changes to the domicile regime were also meant to come into effect then, but these have now been put on hold until after Thursday’s General Election (8th June). Liability for UK inheritance tax is based on domicile and not residence. If you are a UK domicile, or are deemed domiciled under HM Revenue & Customs rules, your worldwide estate above £325,000 is liable to tax at 40%. Assets in the UK are liable, regardless of domicile. You can live in the Canary Isles for many years and remain a UK domicile. It is, however, possible to adopt a domicile of choice in Spain or elsewhere if you cut ties to the UK. The rules are complex, so

you need specialist advice. Residential Nil Rate Band (RNRB) A new “family-home” allowance is added to the standard £325,000 nil rate band since April. It applies to residential property you have lived in and are leaving to children and grandchildren. It starts at £100,000 for the 2017/18 tax year, increasing by £25,000 each year until it is £175,000 in 2020/21. From 2021 it should rise in line with inflation. As with the regular Nil Rate Band, you can transfer the allowance to a spouse or civil partner. This makes a total, potential threshold for a couple of £1m by 2020. This is a welcome reform for UK nationals, wherever they live. But be aware of the limitations. It applies only to property, and only when it is inherited by direct descendants: children (including adopted and stepchildren) and grandchildren. This means it will not apply to many trusts, and discretionary trusts, for example, are excluded. But some trusts do qualify, if the property is deemed to pass directly to the beneficiaries. You need to have lived in the property at some stage, and if you own two or more,

just one receives the new allowance. A limit is imposed. Where an estate (your whole estate and not just property) is worth over £2m, the residential Nil Rate Band is slowly tapered, until estates valued at over £2.2m (in 2020) do not receive this extra allowance. Domicile regime The UK’s Summer Budget of 2015 had included various changes to the non-domicile regime, which would have resulted in more people paying inheritance tax. They should have come into effect on 6th April this year, but on 25th April, the Government put these on hold until after the General Election.

The reform would have meant that those with a UK domicile of origin, returning to live in the UK for over a year, would be deemed to be UK domiciled, making them liable for UK inheritance tax on worldwide assets. Other changes, meant to apply from April 2017, would have reduced the deemed domicile period from 17 to 15 out of 20 years, and made “enveloped” UK residential property liable to inheritance tax. We now have to wait to see what happens after the elections, though we would expect these reforms to go ahead at some point. Cross-border, estateplanning is complex, with many pitfalls. Seek specialist

advice to clarify how the new rules affect you, and how to establish the most effective estate plan for your family. You also need to take Spanish succession tax into account, and the interaction between the two regimes. Tax rates, scope and reliefs may change, and any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices, which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised, so an individual is advised to seek personalised advice. *Keep up to date on the financial issues that may affect you on the Blevins Franks news page, at www. blevinsfranks.com

The General Election 2017 Special will once again be a full results service, beginning when the polls close going through to the following evening. This snap election will be the tenth time David Dimbleby leads out the results team. He presented his first election results programme in 1979. He will be joined by Mishal Husain, Emily Maitlis and Jeremy Vine. They will report, analyse and tally results as they come in along with experts and interviews with all the major political players. Huw Edwards will take over in the morning as lead presenter guiding the audience through the day’s main events, including the formation of a new government. He will also present the evening bulletin. Andrew Neil will take over from Mishal Husain. The 2017 election team will be joined in the studio by many well-known BBC experts including Political Editor, Laura Kuenssberg and Economics Editor, Kamal Ahmed. It will also have an array of correspondents in key constituency locations to bring the news and results from around the country - including from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland - to our audience all through the night.

“I said to him, ‘Please don’t kill me John,’ And then I asked, ‘Where’s Sandra?’ And he said, ‘She’s dead. Don’t look.’” – Lady Veronica Lucan Lord Lucan’s wife speaks on camera for the first time in 30 years and reveals intimate details of her marriage to the infamous aristocrat, in a brand new ITV documentary. The wife of the Earl, whose disappearance in 1974 remains one of the most enduring and iconic mysteries in the public consciousness, offers a vivid account of what happened before his flight and her theory about what became of him. The film, Lord Lucan: My Husband, The Truth which is produced by Brook Lapping, includes previously unseen family archive footage, showing Lucan with his family and friends, living the high life across Europe. It includes the earliest known moving footage of Lord Lucan. Despite the couple’s outwardly lavish lifestyle, Lady Lucan says their relationship was strained. She says: “He talked to me more before our marriage than he ever did afterwards. He said, ‘That’s the point of being married, you don’t have to talk to the person.’” Lady Lucan is interviewed in her mews house, close to the former family home where she describes how their nanny, Sandra Rivett, was brutally murdered in the basement by the Earl, having mistaken her for Lady Lucan. She goes into detail about how Lucan’s gambling had led to heavy debts in the lead-up to the attack, their custody battle for their three children which the Earl lost, and his subsequent disappearance days later. Lady Lucan also offers her own suggestion of what became of her husband, with no trace of him ever confirmed despite myth and speculation building up in the aftermath, and in the decades that followed, as claimed sightings of him were made and multiple theories about what happened to him were put forward. Since Lucan’s disappearance, his wife has remained largely silent, but now she talks openly about their troubled and tempestuous marriage. Her vivid recollections and the archive footage offer a unique and previously unseen insight into one of the most notorious figures of the twentieth century.

The Secret Life Of The Hospital Bed Monday 5th June, BBC1, 09.15

There are over 150,000 hospital beds currently in use across the NHS, and they witness some of the most important moments of our lives. The Secret Life of The Hospital Bed returns for a second series to once again give viewers an intimate and heartwarming portrayal of life, death, and everything in-between inside Britain’s hospitals. In Barnsley Hospital’s A&E department 42 yearold Michelle has been rushed in by ambulance having suffered her second stroke. A&E Bed 12 is ready to look after her and doctors must react quickly to limit the damage that can be caused to her brain. Over in Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital Day Surgery Unit, Bed 41 is waiting to be joined by 25 year-old children’s entertainer Sophie. She’s come in with mum Katie to have reconstructive surgery on her fingertip after being attacked by a dog. Sophie is hoping that surgeons will be able to save as much of her finger as possible. In Leeds Children’s Hospital Paediatric Bed 3 is waiting for its next patient. Fourteen yearold Anna (pictured) is having a frame removed, which doctors hope will have straightened the bone in her leg. She has a very rare genetic disorder called Acrodysostosis, which causes abnormalities in her bones. She’s a keen dancer and hoping the procedure has worked so that she can get back to being a normal active teenager. Back in Barnsley Hospital’s busy A&E department Resus Bed 2 is prepped and on standby for its next critical patient. Seventy-six year-old widow Molly has been admitted with suspected sepsis - a potentially deadly condition. By her side is her son Andrew, who is also her primary carer.

The Fifteen Billion Pound Railway BBC2, 18:00

This documentary series follows a team of more than 10,000 engineers and construction workers as they race to build a brand new railway under London - Crossrail - London’s new Underground. Costing fifteen billion pounds, it’s the biggest engineering project in Europe and a huge challenge to pull off. As they burrow the 42km of tunnels, engineers must battle to make sure that listed buildings don’t crack, London Underground trains keep running, roads don’t shut and the City stays in business. Crucially, they must drive one of their gigantic 1,000-tonne tunnel-boring machines through a tiny gap in the congested underbelly of Tottenham Court Road station without the passengers on the tube platforms below knowing they are there.

When is a taxi not a taxi? By Emma

from Motorworld

WE all know, and can identify, a legal taxi because it displays the sign on its roof and a licence-plate number, issued by the relevant Town Hall, on the side. This can be identified, for example, as LM 249, and, to obtain this licence, the taxi and its drivers must adhere to the laws applicable to Servico Publico - a plaque normally displayed on the rear of the vehicle, in white, as SP. When you take a journey in a legal taxi, you should be safe in the knowledge that,

if something unforeseen happens, such as an accident or injury to you or fellow passengers, the cab has the appropriate and correct insurance and licences, so you would be covered by insurance. The use of illegal taxis has been well-documented over the years, and numerous people have fallen foul of the law. A recent mainland event has highlighted this use of illegal taxis. A legal taxi had been booked and was, subsequently, cancelled two days before. The taxi driver became suspicious and decided to do some surveillance of his own. He calculated the appropriate time of arrival of his “fare” and waited. The cabbie saw the family arrive, in a minibus with a fake transport company, owned by a private individual. He reported this to the Guardia Civil, which found that neither the company, nor the driver, had the

appropriate paperwork and that the vehicle was not a licensed taxi. The insurance wasn’t correct, either, because it did not cover “hire and reward” - the carriage of fare-paying passengers. Also, the driver did not have a work contract for driving, or a rental contract for the property he was, allegedly, renting to the family. In accordance with the law, the vehicle was impounded until the legal owner provided the Ministry of Transport with the correct papers. Clearly, in this case, it is highly unlikely that the owner will be able to do so, because he and the driver were working and providing services on the black market without any relevant paperwork. This particular case resulted in a 4,001-euro fine, which proved to be a costly exercise, and not a happy start to a holiday for the family, either.

There are many “illegal taxis” operating on the mainland and, certainly, here on the island. Some are blatant, and seem to feel that they are above the law. Then there are others, who are more discreet and just receive money for petrol for such a journey. However, in the eyes of the Spanish Law, this still constitutes an illegal taxi journey. Legal taxis must undergo more stringent inspections than normal cars, and the drivers are monitored, licensed and approved to ensure consist service. But this all comes at a price, and taxi owners/ drivers must pay a substantial premium to carry passengers. After all is said and done, this is their livelihood, and, therefore, they are not treated in any way different from other companies/ employees in other sectors. The collaboration between

the police and taxi drivers, and the public, means that many more illegal taxis are being caught. With the implementation of new laws, the police now have the power to immobilise the vehicles and impound them until the owners can supply the correct paperwork, and satisfy officers that the passengers are being carried lawfully. While hiring an “illegal taxi” may seem a good deal, and is often cheaper, remember that you have no recourse, or any way of making a complaint, if there is a problem. With a legal taxi, as with all other legal businesses, you have the right to ask for an “Hoja de reclamaciones” to lodge any complaint you might have. Also, you are safe in the knowledge that should an accident, a serious injury or even a death occur, the insurance is correct and will pay out. Beware!

Don’t follow the hair crowd! By Carl pattison from Robot

I’VE just spent a week away from the salon, and I couldn’t help but notice one thing… every female had the same hair! If they didn’t have a loose-top bun, then they had a barber-style hair cut. What’s happening out there that results in most ladies and young girls having the same style? They’re like robots copying one another, without so much as a single hairidea of their own. When I’m out and about, I do this embarrassing thing of telling complete strangers that they have gorgeous hair. It’s so easy to put down someone’s cut or colour, so, when someone’s hair looks good, I can’t help but tell them. It

goes down well, but I’m doing it because I see more bad hair than good. What happened to individuality? Where did creativity go? Go back a few years, and hair was a neverending circle of inspirational ideas and forever-changing cuts and colours. I know we don’t all wake up everyday and spend hours doing our hair, but a quick 10 minutes is all it needs

to create something presentable. This all starts in the salon with a good cut and complementing colour. Your hair should look great with little effort; if it doesn’t, it’s the wrong style for you. So bring back individuality, have your own hair fashion and stop following the crowds. Hair IS fashion; don’t wear the same as everyone else - create your own hair statement.

Fearless fashionistas By Carl Pattison WHEN did it become fashionable to stop being interested in fashion? Who tells you when to stop making a statement with your clothes? At what age isn’t it right to show your fashion sense, and stop experimenting with your look? The answer is: NEVER. I can’t ever imagine not being interested in clothes, even though I was supposed to have given up, years ago. Your clothing tells people what you want

them to know about you, before you even speak. What you wear tells the world how you are feeling, and what sort of person you are. Like it or not, you only have one

chance to make a first impression, and that impression will last forever. Brits love eccentric. We love seeing overthe-top and glamour, yet, as we age, this part of us tends to fade. Why? It doesn’t need to, and shouldn’t be looked down on. So, no matter what, put on your best and dress to impress. Fashion isn’t about just covering your body; it’s about expressing the real you, no matter what your age.

Dr Rachel Thompson, head of research interpretation at the World Cancer Research Fund, said: “To help prevent breast cancer, one of the most important steps women can take is to not drink alcohol, or reduce the amount of alcohol they do drink. “Maintaining a healthy weight and getting enough exercise are also important.” But Carolyn Rogers, of the charity Breast Cancer Care, added: “The lifestyles people lead is only one part of the bigger picture. While the connection between drinking alcohol and an increased risk of developing breast cancer cannot be ignored, reducing the amount you drink has no guarantees. The greatest risks for developing breast cancer are being a woman and getting older.”

Food Review: Brunelli’s, Puerto de la Cruz

800 degrees... the hottest steak cooked in Tenerife

JUST a stone’s throw from the world-renowned Loro Parque, you will find Brunelli’s Steakhouse, which can almost be likened to Dr Who’s Tardis! You enter, through an unassuming front door, into a world of modern and contemporary warmth. It is clad out in wood, and the walls are adorned with fine artwork. There is also an open kitchen, which captivates every diner. The decor wouldn’t be out of place in the heart of London or Madrid, except for the panoramic window at the back of the restaurant, with its breathtaking, uninterrupted views of the Atlantic - a sight you could never see in the middle of a city! The ethos of Brunelli’s is that if it can’t be done perfectly, then it’s not done at all, which means that the attention to detail and quality is second to none. When you enter the restaurant, after passing through an exquisite bar, there is a glass-fronted meat chamber, which has a temperature-andhumidity-controlled atmosphere. It enables the chefs to have complete control of how the meat is matured. At Brunelli’s, it’s not just about the cooking of meat. The owners pride themselves in sourcing the meat across the globe, from the US to Uruguay, maturing it in perfect conditions, and then refining special techniques for cooking to bring you the best steak you will ever taste! On arrival, we were greeted warmly by the waiting staff and seated at our table. And a quick review of the menu let us choose our starters. To help us decide on the mains, one of the chefs arrived to show all the cuts

of beef available, explaining each one, and where it was sourced, and offering his recommendations. This is a really nice touch because you can see what is on offer, rather than just picking from a menu. You really are spoilt for choice, from Chateaubriand to Porterhouse and Rib Eye Angus to Sirloin, all prepared to your taste. And alongside the beautiful Beef, there are also dishes such as Lobster, leg of Lamb, Veal and fresh catch of the day, all using the highest-quality ingredients. There was a small group of us dining, so I was able to sample three of the starters, which were the Ensalada Brunelli’s, homemade Chorizo, and Chicken and Ginger croquettes. The presentation of all three dishes was superb, especially the salad, which was full of colours. There was a lovely mix of papaya, avocado, mixed leaves, quail’s eggs, and different dressings, which all married together to give a fresh, but rich, flavour. The Chorizo, made at Brunelli’s, was soft and rich, the flavour smokey and slightly spicy. It just melted in the mouth and was accompanied by sweet red onions, which enhanced the flavour perfectly. The final starter was chicken and ginger croquettes, served with a home-made mayonnaise. They had a beautiful, crispy exterior, followed by a soft, smooth interior. And then you get that little pinch of ginger, that gives them an almost-Asian flavour, which is a lovely twist on tradition. A small tour of the kitchen showed us the beating heart of this restaurant, which has a name and a presence: The Southbend,

the only one in the Canaries Islands, and a thing of wonder … an 800-degree, rapid-induction oven that produces absolute magic. Not many chefs are trained to the standard required to use the Southbend because it takes mastery to get dishes absolutely perfect at this heat. And the Head Chef in Brunell’s is, indeed, a master. The Southbend seals the meat at such a high temperature that it caramelises the natural sugars in the meat, creating a golden charred exterior but leaving the meat perfectly red and juicy inside. We chose two different cuts of meat to share, the first being a Tomahawk, which is a very flavourful cut with the bone left in. The second was a Black Angus, sourced from the US. We ordered both to be served rare, with a hot stone on the side for those on the table who wanted the meat seared slightly more. The meat is served with French fries and a selection of vegetables. My normal cooking preference is medium-towell-done, but I believe Brunelli’s may have converted me, The Black Angus was to die for. It was cooked perfectly

rare but it was beautifully soft and didn’t leave a speck of blood on the plate. All the juices and flavour were sealed into the meat and released into every bite. Both cuts of meat, so exquisite, simply melted in the mouth, and the simple flavour of deep-rich steak needed no accompaniment - just a nice sprinkle of rock salt, and let the meat do the talking! The Angus stood out, hands-down, as the best steak I have ever tried (and I have eaten in a lot of Argentine steakhouses in my time). We had steak knives on the table, but a butter knife would have done just fine! A bottle of Brunelli’s house red wine - Special Cuvee Gran Reserva - was served to accompany the main courses. It married very well with the steak, alongside deep-rich but also smokey flavours, that stood up well to the meat. So while we were trying to convince ourselves there was space for dessert, another piece of magic occurred: the huge, panoramic window, which spans nearly entire rear of the restaurant, retracts into the floor. It leaves the sounds of the Atlantic rushing in, and creates a beautiful outdoor

terrace … indoors! This window is a feat of engineering. At over 9m wide by nearly 3m tall, it disappears into the floor seamlessly, and unless you actually experienced it happening, you wouldn’t believe your eyes. The staff told us that, in order to install this window, a specialised crane was needed to lift it over five storeys high to reach the rear of the restaurant. To finish off our meal, we had a plate of mixed desserts to share. And, to be completely honest, however much we wanted to finish them, we just couldn’t! We had the Chocolate fondant, firm on the outside, soft and oozing in the centre, with a beautiful vanilla ice-cream that accompanied perfectly the slightlybitter, dark-decadent chocolate. Alongside this was Crujiente de Platano, a fried, local banana in a crispy light batter, which was full of flavour, just like little bites of Tenerife. Last, but by no means least, a Brunelli’s Special cheesecake with rum and raisins was served up. It is so rich and soft, unlike any cheesecake I have had. The texture was like Panna Cotta, and the flavour was rich in vanilla, with a hint of rum. For something that looked like a normal tarta de queso, it tasted out of this world. And, as a selfproclaimed chocoholic, I even surprised myself to find this was the star of the dessert plate. If you find yourself looking for the hottest steak on the Island, or even in search of some amazing cheesecake, then head up to Brunelli’s, and take a friend or five! I promise you will not be disappointed.

Will horsemeat be on the menu soon? HORSEMEAT is close to becoming part of the Spanish diet, according to a report, and one of the authors, Dr Noelia Aldai, says: “I don’t think we are far away from Spanish people accepting its consumption.”

The study found that horses bred in certain conditions might lead to higher levels of omega-3. And though horsemeat is seen as taboo in many countries, Italy, China and Iceland consider it a delicacy.

Dr Aldai added: “The advantage is to have an alternative protein source, extensivelyproduced, rich in omega-3 and with low GHG (Greenhouse Gas) emissions. “The idea is not to substitute beef, as it

would be impossible, but to provide a healthy alternative.” She agreed that in many countries, horses are considered as pets, but adds: “What is the difference between eating foal or a calf?”

Burgers by Burgos bring a beefy blast

Disappearing wheat problem is resolved TWO men have been arrested in Valladolid Province for the theft of 909 tonnes of wheat, valued at 241,000 euros. The grain company’s management complained about the loss to Guardia Civil officers, who, after investigating, discovered that the wheat had been removed over a period of days and sold for flour at a discounted

price of 101,295 euros. One of the companies which had transported the wheat was identified, and its staff, in turn, gave officers the name of the receiving company. From there, a further firm, acting as an intermediary in the sale, was discovered. This company purchased the wheat for 78,000 euros from a former owner of the silo, who had kept the keys to the property in which the wheat was stored.

While the two men have been charged with receiving stolen property, the person who had ar-

ranged for the theft has disappeared, and officers are attempting to track him down.

A SPANISH meat company in Northern Spain is alleged to have produced lowquality products which were labelled, incorrectly, as containing a higher proportion of beef than they actually had. The Burgos meatprocessing plant, supplying hamburgers and other products, maintained on its labels that the products contained a certain proportion of beef. In reality, they comprised more pork, bread, fats or soy. The company-manu-

factured, white-label products were distributed widely across Spain, and the fraud is understood to have started as far back as 2002. But the nature of the products, such as meat balls and hamburgers, meant that the deception could be uncovered only through analysis in a specialised laboratory. Significant differences between the prices for beef and the substituted materials provided important, economic benefits to the Burgos company. And since an official investigation by the Guardia Civil, which began in December 2015, 14 people have been charged in the scandal.

Fabric or leather? By LilI Meyrick at Muebles Chic

WHEN choosing upholstered furniture, the final decision should depend on what it is, and what use you will give it. Obviously, the bigger the piece of furniture, the bigger the decision. And, and of course, the bigger the price tag! For example, you’re not going to worry as much about what the occasional chair, sitting in the corner of your bedroom, is made from. That’s because it is merely there for decorative purposes, and because it’s not going to set you back as much as that leather, corner-sofa you’re dreaming of for the lounge! If you are looking around for the perfect sofa, it is not a choice you should make lightly. And finding what suits you and your home are things you need to take into consideration, like having young children or pets, which make your needs different from someone who hasn’t either. As technology is on the move constantly, so, too, is the variety of materials available, much of which just gets better and better, adapting to the modern-day demands. However, along with this variety, you will also come across cheaper versions, which doesn’t necessarily mean they’re bad. Just make sure you know what you’re buying, and that

something isn’t sold to you as something it’s not, so a little knowledge can come in handy. With fabrics, the obvious move is to check the thickness of the material. The higher the threadcount, the more dense it is, which will make it more durable. New microfibre fabrics, which can can be extremely durable, are recommended to those who have cats and dogs because they are easy to wipe down and aren’t easily scratched. Moving on to leather, there are many types, as well as the imitation variety available on the market. Here are the most common types you will find when it comes to furniture: Faux leather: This is a synthetic, man-made

product which, quite frankly, has improved massively over the years. If you want the leather-look without paying the leather price-tags, this can be a good choice. Bonded leather: It’s like a reconstructed leather and is made with leather fibres, mixed with bonding materials to form a harder end-product than 100% leather, which has a much softer feel. This bonded leather also makes it less easy to scratch. Split-grain leather: This is what you find under the top-grain leather of the hide. It has a suede-like texture before being processed, and also has a harder feel than topgrain leather. But it is still very durable. Top grain: This is the top layer of the hide,

buffed to remove any lumps and bumps, providing a uniform grain throughout. It is the most expensive leather, but has that luxurious, soft feel and really is long-lasting. With so many sofa models and materials available, make sure you choose something you can live with. Look beyond the trends and think hard about big patterns and bold colours. Comfort and durability should be priority. For a wide selection, and plenty more information, come in and see us at Muebles Chic. We not only have a great range in stock, but special-order options to get any size, shape and colour you need. Call 922 736 448, or email muebles.chic25@ gmail.com

When Plusvalia Tax is void By mariano zunino siri

Registered lawyer at the tenerife bar association

THE Constitutional Court has recently declared that the municipal Tax on the Increased Urban Land Value (also known as Plusvalia) is null when the property is sold and there is no revaluation (this means, sale price is not higher than purchase price).

It is important not to confuse this Town Hall tax with Capital Gains Tax, as the latter is not municipal. The Constitutional Court said: “In no case can the legislator establish a tax, taking into account acts or facts that are not exponents of a real or potential wealth. In other words, it is not legal to impose a tax when

there has been no economic gain. This means that the judgement will enforce the Legislative Power to reform the tax, which is a very important source of income to Town Halls. How the tax is liquidated We must take into account that this tax is based on tables regulated by the authority, which estimates

the increase in the land’s value, based upon objective rules. The Court is saying that this system is no longer legal because the Tax Law does not allow the taxpayer to prove there was no gain. It is actually the citizen who must prove that there has been depreciation. In this sense, the jurispru-

dence of the High Courts of Justice (as in the case of the Valencian Community), have already been acknowledging that the Deeds are sufficient evidence of depreciation. Those who have paid municipal capital gains in the last four years could ask for a tax refund, if the conditions are fulfilled. How to act In cases of losses, the first step to claiming the tax back is to submit a letter, requesting rectification and return of improper income to the Town Hall (stating, if applicable, the amount paid). At this time the administrative case is opened and the municipal authority must answer one way or another (probably refusing the return!). Then, once the administrative route is finished, the contentious-administrative route is opened, with more guarantees to be heard properly.

GB athletes head for Arona arena

OLYMPIC hopefuls from around the world will be converging on the Antonio Dominquez stadium in Playa de Las Americas tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday for the annual Arona Combined Events meeting - and admission is free. Rising stars of the heptathlon and decathlon, including six Great Britain athletes and one from Ireland, will be pushing themselves to the limit. The heptathlon comprises seven events: 100m hurdles, high-jump, shot-put, 200m, long jump, javelin and 800m. Decathlon competitors have an even more challenging

schedule of 10 events:100m, long-jump, shot-put, highjump, 400m, 110m hurdles, discus, pole-vault, javelin and 1500m. Here’s the low-down on the GB and Ireland contingent, although there could be late changes to the scheduled line-up. The meeting is classified as a ranking event, so competitors still need to hit qualifying marks for forthcoming championships … and they are always keen to take advantage of our climate. Heptathlete Jess Taylor has been a regular at Arona for the last few years. She grew up in York but now competes for Sale, Manchester, and is a qualified architect. Holly MacArthur, a 16-yearold from Edinburgh is making her mark on

Basketball

represents Wales. Dartford’s David Hall has been studying physiotherapy at Brunel University, even though combining studies with athletics is quite a balancing act. But Sam Talbot, from Caterham, Surrey, has not let that stop him from breaking the British youth record in his discipline recently. Joe Hobson, from Sheffield, is just 17, but he has received

an early call-up for GB’s Under-20 squad. Each day’s competition runs from 10am to 1pm, then 6pm to just after 8pm. The stadium is where Los Cristianos meets Las Americas, next to the Green Hospital, and is clearly visible by the football floodlights. Arona has its own thriving athletics club, and members will be running youth races in between the senior action.

Second bite was sour DRAMA to the very end … that was the story of Iberostar Tenerife’s season. Their play-off championship hopes looked over after an away defeat to Unicaja Malaga.

A gallant 73-67 home win earned them a tie-breaker game on Sunday in Malaga. But maybe competing on so many fronts this season finally caught up with them. They lost 71-61 to bring the curtain down on the best campaign in their history. The damage was done in the second quarter when they were punished 19-10, which was too big a deficit to claw back. Georgios Bogris, who topscored with 12 points,

the heptathlon scene at under-20 level. The last of the heptathlon trio, Elizabeth Morland, from Co Wexford, Ireland, also competes at under-20 level and has her sights set on next month’s World Junior Championships in Poland. Rivalry will be just as keen in the decathlon camp. Ben Gregory, who enjoys his domestic action with the Aylesbury Vale club, also

was backed up by Aaron Doornekamp and Tariq Kirksay, who each contributed 11 points. Txus Vidorreta, voted top coach in the Liga Endesa, is already planning for next season. And all Iberostar’s success was achieved on the back of long-term injuries to the squad, especially to captain Nico Richotti, who was sorely missed.

Europe’s best on display C H A R I O T- r a c i n g seems almost tame compared with wheelchair basketball. The full power, speed and skill grabbed the nation at the London Paralympics of 2012, and leagues are booming worldwide.

Adeje has been picked as the venue for the 2017 European Championships for men and women. And Great Britain, Spain, Germany, and Holland will be leading the charge in both male and female competitions. Tickets are now on sale for the matches between 21st-30th June in Adeje’s Pabellon Las Torres and

Pabellon Polideportivo Municipal sports halls. Costs range from three euros per game to 35 euros for a full tournament pass, obtainable from the sports halls or online at www.eurowb2017.com The organisers are also looking for volunteers to

help with the running of the event, and that website is again the contact point. Worcester University hosted the last bi-annual event in 2015, and the GB men made it a third straight title after beating Turkey 87-66 in the final. Men’s Group A features Spain, Holland, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, and France. Group B includes Great Britain, Turkey, Germany, Israel, Sweden, and Lithuania. Germany won the 2015 women’s competition from Holland with a 72-62 final win. The pair will be joined in a single group, this time with Spain, Great Britain, Turkey, and France. It all gets underway with the opening ceremony at Las Torres sports hall, at 5pm on 21st June.

Tower of London’s 170! TWO weeks into the new season, and we have a trophy winner already! With 170 left on his score in his singles match, Phoenix stalwart London fired in two treble 20s, then paused as he composed himself for the bull.

A tantalising hush fell around the bar before he launched his last dart straight into that red bit, earning himself a standing ovation from both Scruffy Macs and Phoenix players, which was nice to see.

The match, won on the trebles leg by Scruffy Macs,

Ladies’ Football

also included maximums from Del Boy and Tom.

Joe hit his first 180 for Gaffers as they put seven past Emerald Lounge, who had Tommy replying with his first. I’m told that Gaffers’ skipper Terry took fewer than 85 darts this week, which he celebrated by winning the FA Cup on Saturday! Pas O Nadas A had to go to the last rubber to squeak a victory at Tavern A, while the Playboys earned a narrow win at Picassos. The Pub, playing their first fixture, took all eight points at Waterfall, and a local derby at Palms Pool Bar saw Bar 180 A run out 6-2 victors. As suggested last week, Legends seem to be the

stand-out team in Division 2, despite a dropped point against Bar Leones at home. But hot on their heels are the all-girl team Lady Macs, who put in a fine performance to beat Nutty Nautas and now sit in second place. Third-placed Marilyns A claimed six points at Ourplace Playgirls, while Naughty Nautas took the trebles leg to sneak a 5-3 win over Red Devils. New outfit Buzzin Bs secured their first-ever win in the Oasis Fm Darts League by notching five points at Marilyns B. But the honours finished even at Bar 180 B with their draw against Ourplace Breakaways.

Girls Football

Girls inspire the ladies

Footie girls on top! AN all-girls’ football team have made history by beating the boys at their own game, triumphing in a Spanish boys’ league.

EGATESA Granadilla Tenerife, building a bright future for ladies’ football, took great pride in their B team completing a league and cup double this week.

It was the perfect tonic as the seniors prepared for the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey (Queen’s Cup). The B team travelled up to La Salud, in Santa Cruz, to play Union Guimar in the Copa Javier Felip final. The first half was tight and goal-less, but Tenerife went ahead on the hour, thanks to Benchara. A quick reply from Guimar levelled the score before Vanesa grabbed a winner to

earn double delight. Some B-team players are already knocking on the senior door, and this selfsufficient club, with a progression of local talent, should ensure the sport grows in Tenerife. Now it’s over to the Primera League ladies as they take on Levante at Atletico Madrid’s ground on Sunda, and another reunion with Maria Jose Perez, the Granadilla club’s former top-scorer. Madrid is hosting the final matches over three weeks, and victory for the Granadilla side this weekend will lead to a return trip next week to face Atletico Madrid or Rayo Vallecano. And, hopefully, the big final follows a week later.

The girls of AEM Lleida, all aged 14 or under, believed they had no genuine opposition from other female teams, so they signed up to compete against their male counterparts. Two seasons later, the Catalonia team got their hands on the winners’ trophy, top-scorer Andrea Gomez netting 38 times, and the girls losing just one of their 22 games. AEM took advantage of a Spanish soccer federation rule that allows clubs to field players of any sex, including mixed teams that combine boys and girls, for junior league competitions until the age of 14. But the girls had to overcome major hurdles during their campaign, including abuse from the sidelines. “It’s strange, but most of the macho comments and insults have come from the mothers of some of the boys

we play, said club director Jose Maria Salmeron. “It has really been more a problem for parents rather than their boys.” And club President Sergio Gonzalez added: “A few parents called us crazy when we registered the team. If this had gone very wrong, we would have been held responsible for humiliating the girls.” One opponent said: “It’s hard to lose against girls,

but they really are very good.” But Ana Maria Biela was reluctant to allow her daughter to compete in the boys’ league. “I delayed as long as possible because I was afraid that she would get hurt,” she admitted. Now, though, AEM Lleida are trying to raise 10,000 euros because of a lack of resources, which, say officials, is a “barrier” to developing talent.

CD Tenerife

Play-offs in sight! By Colin Kirby

TIMING is everything, and CD Tenerife, needing a big performance on Sunday morning after their rivals had made up ground the previous day, delivered it by the shovelful with this magnificent victory.

Alcorcon 1 CD Tenerife 3

need a little good fortune, and Alcorcon looked to have pulled a goal back through Alvaro, only for the ref to rule him offside. The TV replay told a different tale, which riled Alcorcon, who showed a bit of fight. A thundering shot looked goal-bound, but Tenerife´s Dani Hernandez jack-knifed his body in mid-air for an outstanding save, while another, low at the post just afterwards, seemed almost easy by comparison. The second half was in its infancy when a generous free-kick was curled over the Tenerife wall by Plano to reduce the deficit. Thoughts of a surrendered

Alcorcon had always been a jinx ground, but not now. The team may not even need any more points for the promotion play-offs, should the others falter. But they will be keen to seal it against Gimnastic on Sunday evening at home, to avoid any nerves at Zaragoza in their final, regular game. The attitude was perfect; crisp, attacking play from the off brought a swift reward after 10 minutes. Gaku Shibasaki controlled the ball before passing to Aaron on the left. He swung it in and Choco Lozano popped it in the net with his head. Patient build-ups were exposing the Alcorcon defence, and Choco squared a ball to Aaron, who shot too high. German, supporting from defence, then headed a free ball into the path of Choco, who couldn´t quite stretch far enough for a shot. Tayron, a valuable addition to the team, reads the game well, and he threaded a pass to Gaku, who scored his first goal outside of Japan. It was a nice way to mark his 25th birthday, and the way his team-mates mobbed him showed how popular he has become. But even the best teams

UD Ibarra

2-0 lead in the previous away game were soon banished when a corner was deflected to the edge of the goalmouth, from where Tayron restored the two-goal cushion. Yet there was no room for complacency. Alcorcon tried to catch Dani out, but he responded with a stunning, one-handed take as he back-pedalled in front of goal. It was a luxury to bring on fit-again Amath, CDT’s top scorer with three goals already in the bag. The Senegal striker went on a goal run from a quick release by Dani, but a little injury-rust left him just short of full pace. Most things tried by Tenerife came off, and even though Aaron has lost a little sparkle in recent weeks, he still has the beating of most defenders. But another wasted shot, hit too high, bore little resemblance to his normally-lethal finishing. The only other downer on a sky-high morning was a second booking and sending-off for defender Camille, although a video appeal will clearly show he didn’t get anywhere near to the theatrical Alejo. Bringing on Inaki for Gaku was a wise move, in case they do need the defender to cover for Camille´s suspension. Five minutes of injury-time was played out with no threat, and the 200-plus travelling Tenerife fans rejoiced at the final whistle. Coach Pep Marti urged caution after the game because there is still some work to do. But he must have been brimming with pride at his players’ performance.

Too little, too late! GOALS win games, especially two-legged, play-off ties, as Ibarra discovered when they travelled to Tropezon, in Santander, clinging on to a single goal from their home win. It gave Tropezon a realistic chance on their own patch and they made no mistake

Tropezon 3 Ibarra 1 (agg: 3-2)

with a 3-1 victory. All was well in the first half as Ibarra weathered the storm and went in level at 0-0. But pressure from the home side forced a tiesquaring goal from Cote after 64 minutes. And when Bastillo added another 10 minutes later, Ibarra’s dream of a promotion run to the Segunda B

began crumbling. In fact, it was snuffed out by a Fresno penalty with just five minutes of normal time remaining. The referee offered up a decent slice of injury-time, and Iray pulled one back in the 95th minute. But Tropezon played out the last few seconds to move on to the next stage.
