Airport chief launches 32m-euro facelift plan Continued from Front “There is no danger of airport saturation, and there will be no risk from the point of view of airport capacity in the coming years,” said AENA’s South Airport Director Santiago Yus, following Alonso’s accusation of the company’s failure to renovate the terminal.

Alonso described the behaviour of Spanish airports’ management group AENA as “distressing”, blaming it for “lack of foresight” in the face of growing airport traffic expected in the coming years.

He also accusing AENA of “not moving” to renovate the South’s Reina Sofia airport, which will have been in place for 40 years in 2018.

But Yus stressed: “Investment planning is not done to bridge bottlenecks for a

Last year 10,472,404 passengers passed through the South Airport, which was its highest total ever, and almost 15% more than in 2015.

The busiest days of the week are Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and, on any of those days, especially during the winter season, more than 37,000 people can pass through the terminal.

They account for 250 operations (take-offs and landings), with an average of 150 passengers per plane.

The difference between weekdays, with more and less activity, has shortened in recent years. Historic peaks, on days like Friday, are becoming less pronounced, and there is greater stability today.

And Airport Director Yus says an investment plan is already under way, which will allow a “significant development” of the airport in the next five years.

Terminal 2 (T-2), which covers an area of 11,000sq/m, was built in its day to avoid a bottleneck effect during the check-in process (with 30 counters). It will now become a boarding lounge with six gates, which will increase the airport capacity by two million people, to 12 million. That was the capacity approved in the 2002 Master Plan.

A Gold Medal for IES Adeje School

IES Adeje secondary school has been awarded the town’s Gold Medal by the local Council, following a unanimous vote by councillors.

Prior to this, the Council had awarded this distinction just four times: in 2007 to the borough’s firefighters, and in 2011 to its School of Folklore, the Patron Band and the “Hermandad del Santísimo”.

guarantee “of social cohesion and equality of opportunities”.

Félix Pérez Hernández, IES Adeje director, accepted the medal on the school’s behalf, thanking the Council and, in particular, the Mayor “for this distinction”.

He added: “We recognise this award as underlining the importance of second-level education. IES Adeje represents all of the education communities in Adeje, and, in some way, we wish to share this award with them.

FOUR men suspected of carrying a corpse in their boat in Marbella had actually caught a large tuna, possibly illegally.

Police received a call from a concerned member of the public, who reported a dead body aboard.

However, it emerged that the quartet had merely caught a 111kg bluefin tuna, later found by police in the cold room of a local restaurant.

A MAN aged 62 injured himself badly on Tuesday morning after falling off a donkey on a forest trail in Chanajiga, Los Realejos.

He injured his ribs, and firefighters had to carry him from the trail to the ambulance, which transferred him to Hospiten Bellevue Emergency unit for further treatment.

Over the years, the school has evolved into a fulltime, recognised secondary school, offering state-recognised exams such as the Bachillerato and professional training courses.

As a result, it was awarded the official IES (Institute of Secondary Education) Adeje title.

In 1999, in fact, it was the first public education centre in Adeje to offer students the opportunity to sit the Bachillerato (A-level equivalent).

Green-fingered drugs man held THE Guardia Civil arrested a 51-yearold man in Icod de los Vinos, who ran a business for growing and selling marijuana.

Officers investigated the man for weeks prior to the arrest, because they had been led to believe he had an indoor marijuana plantation.

The arrest occurred last Friday, when they obtained a warrant to search his rental property, and found two plantation areas, a laboratory and a packaging area.

The man grew, dried and packaged the drug, and then, periodically, travelled down South

to Guargacho to sell it.

During the house search, officers seized 1,062 euros in cash; 158 marijuana plants of different sizes; 619gms of marijuana buds, dried and ready for consumption; a laptop, tablet, camera and a pen drive.

They also found chemicals, such as growth hormones and specific fertilisers.

Unlucky Rajoy casts vote against Budget!

THINGS just aren’t going Mariano Rajoy’s way at the moment, and his latest blunder comes on top of a High Court judgement, ordering him to appear in person at a notorious trial to give evidence.

He has now, inadvertently, voted against his own State budget, although his Parliamentary faux pas will not stop the proposals from going ahead. An amendment to the 2017 budget was put forward by regional party Nueva Canarias, and which the reigning PP government had already agreed to enable the year’s financial plan to come into effect.

But the only dissenting voice in Parliament was Rajoy, who immediately turned bright red when he realised he had pressed the wrong buzzer, hitting the No button in error. Needless to say, he received an ironic round of applause.

SOME 30 sunbathers, including infants, fled in terror last Thursday afternoon from the Abades beach, after suffering the effects of tear gas.

It was being used by the Guardia Civil during a training exercise in a nearby area, and, fortunately, no one was seriously injured. But there were watering eyes, irritated throats and, say locals, scenes of panic because no one had any idea about what was happening.

Those affected said that although the first wave of gas was accompanied by smoke, there was nothing to alert them of the second wave.

“The worst thing was that no one knew what was going on, except us locals,” he said.

“That’s because it is not the first time we’ve had problems with the nearby area, which is reserved for military use. People were really scared, especially those with babies, and anything could have happened.”

Arico Town Hall confirmed that the Guardia Civil had been on a training exercise, and that Arico Council had been given permission to stage the exercise.

Although the Local Police and Guardia Civil received various complaints during the day, no one was affected.

Drug dealers held in Adeje TWO Adeje men have men have been arrested by the Guardia Civil and Local Police for drug-dealing.

The men, aged 23 and 26, were living illegally in a house in the borough, but when the Guardia questioned them, they became nervous and said they were moving on. They claimed they had been scammed over the rental costs.

But their eagerness to leave alerted the officers, who searched the men and their bags.

On one, they found 19 pieces of hashish, weighing 475gms, together with four bags containing a white powder, which later tested positive as cocaine. And there was more hashish and a small bag of ecstasy on his companion.

They are currently being held, awaiting trial at Arona Courts.

Motorway madness!

ALL eyes were on two men, who took part in the recent Villa de Adeje Rally and broke road-safety laws drastically - on a motorway, no less!

The Guardia Civil are now conducting a probe, sparked by a video published on social media, of one driver in his vehicle, pushing a broken-down rally car steered by the other man, along the TF-1.

The incident took place on 12th May, and the men under investigation, one a rally driver and the other his team mechanic, had travelled from Galicia to compete in the rally.

It is one of the most important motor events held in South Tenerife, the individual scores contributing towards the Spanish Championship Rally.

The two people involved are aged 32 and 40, from Lugo and La Coruña respectively, and they committed the reckless stunt because the rally car had broken down.

To continue racing, they had to get it to where mechanical assistance was available. In fact, though, they abandoned the competition, voluntarily, in the end.

Brutal park rape AN Estonian woman was brutally raped and assaulted in the early hours of last Saturday in Fañabe’s Avenida Jardines del Duque, a large park between hotels and residential buildings.

The attack was so severe that the 30-year-old was found unconscious. She had received several blows to different parts of her body, but mainly to her face and one eye.

She was transferred by ambulance to hospital, where a forensic doctor examined her, and sent her for surgery. The woman was said to be stable the following night.

was sealed off while the National Police forensic unit conducted a walk-through inspection, photographing

the crime scene and collecting various items of evidence.

The National Judicial Police

and the Woman and Family unit have taken charge of the investigation. So far, though, there are no suspects.

Arona rainbow’s such a statement ON Monday for the first time ever, LGBT’s community symbol, the rainbow flag, was raised on Las Vistas beach.

It signalled lift-off for the ARN Culture & Business Pride 2017, Arona municipality’s Gay Pride celebrations, which are recognised internationally and feted between June and July.

Arona Mayor José Julián Mena was accompanied by former Iceland leader Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, her country’s first female prime minister, and the only

person, openly-homosexual worldwide, to hold a similar position.

She was one of the main speakers at one of the conferences, and will receive an Alan Turing award tomorrow (Saturday).

It is a highly-treasured, annual prize, given by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) to “an individual selected for contributions of a technical nature made to the computing community”.

Mena said: “Arona aims to celebrate a Gay Pride week that’s different from other locations.

“It focuses on a cultural and quality component that

recognises and values the important contributions from the gay community to society as a whole, through outstanding personalities in business, national and international politics, scientific research, journalism and culture.

Highlight of the week, from midday until 9pm, will almost certainly be Sunday’s closing music festival, which is free and heterosexual.

It features Soft Cell’s Marc Almond; Right Said Fred; The Weather Girls; Morcheeba; Alicia Ramos y Brutiful; Labaq; Coreón Dú and Juana La Cubana.

Meanwhile, in Madrid, which is hosting this year’s international LGBTQ World Pride event, as well as the Euro Pride show, traffic lights, depicting women and same-sex couples, are being installed, as are pedestrian crossings with stripes painted in the colours of the rainbow flag.

Officials want the lights to become a new symbol for the city, and an acknowledgement of its diversity.

A breast-milk bank for Canary mums?

Rubbish? We’ll sort it all out in our borough

ADEJE Council, viewed as a pioneer in the Canaries, has taken part in a series of working days under the “Urban Waste” umbrella.

A GROUP of mothers have taken to Change.org to collect signatures for a breast-milk bank to be opened in the Canaries.

Studies have shown the benefits of breast milk for infants because it can alleviate the deficiencies of premature babies, or babies facing a chronic disease, and those allergic to protein in cows’ milk.

There are no breast-milk banks in the Canaries yet, but 12 banks have been registered so far this year across Spain. That is why this mums’ group have launched a petition to ask the Ministry of Health to implement one of these banks, whether it be integrated into the blood bank or in one of the hospitals.

The petition has already collected more than 2,400 signatures, but many more are needed for this to become a reality.

It is a European project, aimed at reducing the creation of waste, and improving its treatment at local level.

“We are marking World Environment Day under the slogan, ‘I’m with nature’, and we acknowledge the work of Adeje residents in improving rates of recycling in recent years,” said Carmen Rosa González Cabrera, the Councillor with responsibility.

“With the increased number of tourists coming here, and generating more rubbish, Adeje has actually upped levels of waste separation and recycling, thanks to the efforts of residents.”

During the borough’s contribution to the workshops, participants learnt about the measures undertaken at municipal level to

encourage the three “Rs”, Reduction, Re-use, Recycling, as well as how hotels are also adopting ecological practices.

The geo-location of the borough’s ‘ecological islands’ (recycling points with the blue, green and yellow containers for different kinds of waste) has also helped because they can be found easily with the Adeje Council App, users being able to locate the collection point nearest to them.

Other measures recently introduced to improve the environment include the waste-collection com-

pany’s new, reduced-noise vehicles.

The volume of material deposited in the ecological points rose, and, in 2016, 636 tonnes of plastic, 2,998 tonnes of glass, plus 1,663 tonnes of paper/cardboard, were collected And while, overall, more rubbish has been generated this year so far, compared with the same period last year, recycling rates have also increased.

There are 225 ecological islands in Adeje, adding up to almost 700 containers, as well as the containers for organic waste.

Theatre of

dreams ADEJE Theatre, in the borough’s Cultural Centre, will host its 10th annual event for Special Needs individuals tonight (Friday), and entry is free.

Arcoíris from Candelaria, Rosas del Guanche (Arona), Los Olivos (Afromje), Asociación Orobal (Los Cristianos) and the people from the Pisada Project (Los Olivos) are providing the entertainment, performances beginning at 6pm.

Carmen Lucía Rodríguez del Toro, Councillor for Equality Politics, said: “This is an event unique to Adeje in the Canaries. It is something that people now look forward to every year, and the theatre is full for each performance.”

She added: “It allows us use the theatre as a learning and growth tool, as well as valuing the creative side of the members of each centre, who have been preparing their shows enthusiastically, down to the last detail.”

She also believes the high attendance each year is also a motivation for the performers, allowing individuals with diverse, functional challenges to develop, in line with their artistic leanings.

And she praised the people behind the performers, “who decide which work to adapt and who to cast in each show, working in the direction and production of the staging as well”.

In Adeje, 119 persons with special needs use the Los Olivos centre daily, with a further 65 making use of the facilities.

The centre works to help individuals in the fields of education, work, social and independent development, to promote autonomy and help people take an active part in the economic, political, cultural and social life of their community.

Work-training and jobplacement is also offered, and it is all part of promoting the rights and liberties of those with special needs, and working towards a guarantee of a better quality of life for them and their families.

Drug-debt horror of old body in a barrel

A GRUESOME, drug-debt crime near Madrid, which similarities to a cult TV show, has been labelled “Operation Breaking Bad” by police.

The body of the victim, who has not been named, was dissolved in a barrel of chemicals to hide the evidence.

He was reported missing by his family in Parla (Madrid) in September 2015. And police discovered he had been summoned to a house in Illescas, in the province of Toledo, the same day. He had been lured into the garage under false pretences,

then shot three times.

Initially, the killer buried him in the garden after hiding him for several days in a freezer. Then, several months later, he dug up the body and put it in a barrel filled with ammonia, acid and caustic soda.

Earlier this year, investigators uncovered information about the victim, who was said to have owed money to drug-dealers.

Now, after finding his clothing, an axe and one of his bones still buried in the garden, Parla police have arrested three men in connection with the high-profile crime.

Nothing else remains of the dead man’s body in what said to be the first case of its kind in Spain.

What’s in a name?

FROM the end of this month, a Spanish child will be able to use his or her mother’s surname before the father’s, whether or not both parents agree.

The custom in Spain has always been that women do not change their surnames when they marry, and that children automatically have two surnames: their dad’s, followed by their mum’s.

But since the Millennium, Spanish law has allowed

babies to be registered with their mother’s surnames first, if both parents agree.

If there were no agreement, preference was always given to the father’s surname being first.

This has proved awkward for single mothers, especially when the father does not want to have contact with the child; or with all-female couples, where the father is a donor and has agreed not to interfere with the child’s upbringing.

From 30th June, however, the father’s surname will not, automatically, become the child’s first surname,

and the parent or parents will have to confirm the order of names in writing.

Although, in most cases, the mother and father agreed when children were given their mum’s surname first, occasional disputes meant a greater workload for notaries and registrars.

This led to delays and a backlog, forcing parents to queue for long hours to get into the registry, or wait weeks for appointments.

But the preference will no longer be for the dad’s name first from the end of June, in a bid “to promote equality between sexes”.

Spain’s jobs’ joy NEW job openings in Spain grew last month by an average of 223,192 contributors, which is reminiscent of the speed associated with the good times, before the recession.

It was the best set of figures for May since these statistics began in 2001, according to the Ministry of Labour, and the big push has left the Social Security system with 683,575 more

contributors in the last year.

That’s an annual rise of 3.87%, and last month’s figures demonstrate the big span of temporary jobs in the Spanish sector.

Meanwhile, jobless claims fell by 111,908 for a total of 3.46 million, which was the lowest figure since June 2009.

For the last few months, the labour market has been creating jobs at a better rate than in 2015, which was considered the best year since the economic recovery.

The hospitality industry has been doing particularly

well in recent years, and last month was no exception, with 65,409 new Social Security contributors. This sector was followed by administrative workers (24,349 new affiliations) and retail (15,793).

As for hirings, over two million contracts were signed in May, up nearly 16% from the same period last year.

This figure demonstrates the great weight of temporary jobs in the Spanish job market, since only 8.2% of those contracts were openended.

AN Arona resident has been arrested by the Guardia Civil on a charge of robbery with force at a Costa del Silencio hotel.

The 45-year-old, and an accomplice, broke into a hotel room via a balcony, and stole jewellery worth 600 euros, as well as a computer, valued at 100 euros. The couple were captured on the hotel’s security cameras.

Wife-beater dad arrested

LOCAL Police in La Laguna have arrested a 63-year-old man on Sunday afternoon for alleged domestic violence, after being tipped off by his daughter.

Her dad pulled up to the family home in Los Andenes, alongside his wife, whom, it was said, he had been beating continually in the vehicle.

The daughter alerted the cops, who arrested him after she told them the abuse had being going on for years, and that she could no longer handle it.

The husband, along with the Police report, was handed over to La Laguna Courts.

Unwelcome American ‘pests’

WHEN a pest-controller was called to a Tenerife house in Tacoronte, in the north-east, he discovered it had, somehow, been invaded by a species of termite from Louisiana, America.

The insect does not originate from the Canary Islands, and is considered one of the most destructive types of termites, according to Anticimex pest control.

But the controller told the residents: “No need to be alarmed, because it has been detected in a very localised area.”

Termite specialist David Mora said: “Chances are that this species of termites arrived on the island by ship.

“But it would be advisable to conduct a survey to identify the areas affected and treat them, to eradicate this species from the island.”

Macaws flourish at Loro Parque!

LORO Parque continues to obtain magnificent results with its breeding programmes, and, on this occasion, Loro Parque Fundación (LPF), as the only zoological centre in Europe, has managed to reproduce the Lear’s macaw (Anodorhynchus leari). This is an endangered species that lives in the north of Brazil, and is currently exhibited in the Park.

Since 2006, when the Brazilian government first sent a pair of Lear’s macaws to Loro Parque for reproduction, LPF has seen 30 individuals hatched in Tenerife, nine of which have already been returned to Brazil.

The acclimatisation of the parrots has been fundamental, in order to achieve such successful breeding.

The imitation of their natural habitat, the good climate and the food from the Licuri palm tree, on which they feed in Brazil, have been the keys for such good results.

Lear’s macaws have suffered because of illegal trading and the capture of their young, and, when grown up, farmers chase after them to protect their corn. Their habitat is increasingly degraded by the use of land for cattle, and also by the indiscriminate collection of the leaves and

fruits of the Licuri palm.

The scientific director of LPF, Rafael Zamora, explains the process of adaptation, and the creation of a habitat most similar to its natural environment: “When the first pair was going to arrive, we took a photo of the cliff where they lived in the area of Brazil, so that our team of craft workers could recreate an imitation as close as possible to these rocks. We have managed to recreate their natural habitat here at Loro Parque.”

Loro Parque Foundation has managed the recovery of the species, and changed the category of protection from “critically endangered” to “threatened animal”,

a very important step in conservation.

Up to this date, nearly 500,000 euros have been invested in the protection of Lear’s free-ranging macaw, contributing to the definition of priority actions, previously studying its geographic movements and food resources, and sensitisation of local populations on the importance of maintaining the Licuri palm.

The objective remains to situate the Lear’s macaw as an unmanaged species, reducing its threats and recovering the wild population, in addition to protecting this palm tree, essential for the long-term recovery of the species.

A BOY of seven suffered a head injury on Monday afternoon in Santa Cruz after being knocked down by a car.

Paramedics assessed the minor, who was transferred to the University Hospital for further medical care.

Couple’s number is up!

THE Canarian Police have denounced a couple for leaving their children, aged two and five, in a vehicle, while they played bingo at a Santa Cruz hall.

The officers, who found the youngsters in good health, filed the complaint with Santa Cruz Courts, accusing the parents of abandoning their children. They also asked Children Protection Services to carry out a family-unit valuation.

THE city of Torrelodones, in the Madrid region, has complained to the Guardia Civil about the theft of a fake “giant poop”, which was part of a local scoopthe-poop campaign.

The huge, inflatable dropping went missing after the air was taken out, and the item packed back into its case.

It sounds funny, but city officials won’t be laughing because it will set them back 2,400 euros to replace the pile.

That’s the price demanded by a contractor, who says

he can find a replacement for the imitation dog mess, which stands three metres tall.

The display was part of a local awareness campaign to get residents to scoop up the poop left by their dogs.

With pet ownership on the rise, other Spanish municipalities have come up with creative ways to stress the need not to leave dogs’ mess on the streets.

One town mailed back the droppings to the animals’ owners, while others are trying to create a database that will allow them to match the poop with the dog through DNA testing.

Drug-and-cash chief’s cushy life ends in jail THE head of an organised crime group, who smuggled drugs and cash between Ibiza and Wales, has been jailed following an investigation by the National Crime Agency (NCA).

Nicholas Strange, 34, lived on the Balearic island and sourced cocaine sold by his 61-year-old father Neil, and associate Martyn Pagett, 31, from a travellers’ site in South Wales.

Nicholas was sentenced to 10 years in prison at Cardiff Crown Court, after admitting two counts of supplying class A drugs, and one of laundering the cash made by the group.

Neil Strange is already serving 8½ years for helping him to smuggle the cash back to Ibiza.

His son was arrested in May 2016 by the Guardia Civil, acting on NCA intelligence, and repatriated to the UK.

NCA officer John Lewis said Strange had “kept his hands clean while his dad did the dirty work”.

Pagett, from Blaina, South Wales, is serving an eightyear sentence for handling sales of the cocaine to crime groups across the UK. Officers from the NCA had discovered Strange’s role after arresting his father and Pagett in Bristol in 2014, an operation in which they recovered £125,000 in cash.

They also found 8kg of high-purity cocaine, with a potential street value of £960,000 in Pagett’s portacabin, at the Cwm Crachen travellers’ site, where he was employed as site warden.

A further £9,000 in cash was recovered at an address linked to Neil in Theale, near Reading.

The NCA then began the two-year search, which culminated in the arrest of Nicholas by the Guardia Civil, and his remand at

HMP Cardiff last June.

His group had been supplying, among others, Ashley Burgham, 28-yearold head of a Gwent-based, organised crime group.

Burgham and 10 of his group were imprisoned for a combined total of 54 years in December 2015.

The Stranges and Pagett were also supplying Glaswegian Anthony Moran, then 33, and now serving an eight-year prison sentence. He was stopped by British transport police, acting on NCA intelligence, on a train to Scotland, shortly after a meeting with Pagett.

The Scot had with him 1kg of cocaine worth £35,000 wholesale, and up to £120,000 when cut and sold. One of guilty pleas by Nicholas Strange related to the supply of cocaine to Moran.

The total sentences amounted to 34 years for the group of four - the Stranges, Pagett and Moran - following the successful

NCA investigation.

Mr Lewis, lead officer for the NCA, said: “Nicholas Strange was a crook, who stayed in sunny Ibiza and kept his hands clean while his dad did the dirty work.

“Taking out his operation led to the imprisonment of several serious and organised criminals, and the disruption of their networks. It also denied the criminal economy a lot of cash.”

He added: “We were determined to track Strange down, and, thanks to our intelligence capabilities and close ties with the Guardia Civil, Nicholas has faced the full weight of justice.”

Simon Manley, British Ambassador to Spain, added: “This is excellent news, and it stems from the great relationship between the security forces of Spain and the UK. “I am confident this cooperation will remain, and even increase, in the future.”

OFFICIALS in Madrid have been asked to ban men from spreading their legs on the city’s train network … a practice known as “manspreading”.

A campaign has been launched by a group of women, called Mujeres en Lucha (Women in Struggle), to prevent male commuters taking up so much room on public transport.

They want Madrid City Hall to put up posters to that effect, giving the manspreaders a nudge, so to speak.

Politicians in the left-wing CUP party sparked the campaign in April, and Mujeres en Lucha’s began its online petition, called #MadridSinManspreading It criticises the “attitude” of men, who sit with their legs wide open and “occupy the space of others”.

The petition adds: “It is not something that occurs sporadically, because, if you look, you will realise that it is a common practice.

“It is not difficult to see women with their legs closed and very uncomfortable, because there is a man next to her who is invading her space.

Manspreading was taken up at party political level in April, when the CUP party called for a campaign to combat the practice.

“It was branded an ‘exhibition of machismo and a micro-aggression that can make the person suffering it uncomfortable’, according to online newspaper iNews.

The problem has, in recent years, made headlines in other countries. In 2014, men taking the New York subway were also asked to sit more considerately.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority there unveiled public-service advertisements, aimed at men hogging unfair space on packed trains.

Holiday without your pet is not a real holiday

MAYBE you are thinking about visiting your country this summer, taking your cat or dog away with you. If this is the case, you should check if your pet’s passport is due, and if your insurance extends abroad.

In some cases, cover for travel abroad could be an add-on to your existing policy, so you’d have to apply for it separately.

When you travel in Europe, the requirements will not vary much from one country to another.

In both the European Union and most other countries, the Pet Travel Scheme is unified.

This document is valid for dogs, cats and ferrets, and contains the animal’s whole health history and all its identifying data, and also those that refer to the owner.

The passport must be processed through a veterinarian. It must be taken into account that, in a generalised way, travel is not allowed with animals under three months.

If you are one of those who likes the option of travelling by car, whether near or far, here are some tips to make the journey more than comfortable for your most-loyal friend: 1. Keep your pet safe

and secure in a wellventilated carrier.

There are a variety of wire mesh, hard plastic and soft-sided carriers available.

Whatever you choose, make sure it is large enough for your pet to stand, sit, lie down and turn around in. It would be good to get your pet used to the carrier in the comfort of your home before your trip.

And please be sure to always secure the crate so it won’t slide or shift in the event of a quick stop.

2. Your pet’s travelfeeding schedule should start with a light meal, 3-4 hours prior to departure.

Don’t feed your pet in a moving vehicle, even if it is a long drive.

3. Never leave your animal alone in a parked vehicle. On a hot day, even with the windows open, a parked automobile can become a furnace in no time, and heatstroke can develop. In cold weather, a car can act as a refrigerator, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death.

4. What’s in your pet’s travelling kit?

In addition to travel papers, food, bowl, leash, a waste scoop, plastic bags, grooming supplies, medication and a pet first-aid kit, pack a favorite toy or pillow to give your pet a sense of familiarity.

5. Make sure your pet has a microchip for identification, and wears a collar with a tag imprinted with

your home address, as well as a temporary travel tag with your mobile and destination phone numbers, and any other relevant contact information.

6. Don’t allow your pet to ride with his head outside the window.

He could be injured by flying objects. And please keep him in the back seat in his crate, or with a harness attached to a seat buckle.

7. Opt for bottled or tap water stored in plastic bottles. Drinking water from an area he’s not used to could result in a tummy upset for your pet.

Santander’s Popular move

SPAIN’S Santander bank, seeking to offload more than 400 branches, has purchased struggling Banco Popular for a symbolic one euro.

A statement released by the European Union’s Single Resolution Board (SRB), says the deal will prevent the collapse of Popular.

The decision follows a week in which Popular shares plummeted. And, says the European Central Bank, it was “failing, or likely to fail”.

The takeover has been endorsed by the European Commission. Trading in Popular shares has been suspended, and shareholders will lose their total in-

vestment. Elke König, who chairs the SRB, said in a statement: “The decision safeguards the depositors, and critical functions of Banco Popular.

“This shows that the tools given to resolution authorities after the crisis are effective to protect taxpayers’ money from bailing out banks.”

Until now, Banco Popular’s listed value had been around 1.3bn euros. But that total has been wiped out following the sale, which affects around 300,000 investors.

It is the SRB’s first such decision since it became an independent agency in January 2015, aiming to “avoid bail-outs and worstcase scenarios”.

British car pair are hit by attempted murder charge TWO Spanishbased British men, accused of driving their car into pedestrians in Puerto Banus, Marbella, and attempted murder while high on drugs, have appeared in court.

Liam Anthony O’Neill and Marcus Eric Stewart, both 27, were involved in an incident which saw the driver and 10 people injured, two seriously, after the car mounted a pavement and drove towards pedestrians.

The men, who tested positive for alcohol, cocaine and cannabis, appeared in Marbella Court, where they denied being under the influence of drugs, or being involved in a fight.

They are accused of attempted murder and fleeing the scene in their car before colliding with a number of other vehicles.

They are also facing charges of endangering road-safety and causing injury. The pair, who

have lived in Spain for four years, were driving a right-hand-drive, Englishregistered, black Audi A7.

It remains unclear who was driving the car, which was written off, but O’Neill has since been released on a 25,000-euro bail, while Stewart, thought to have been driving, remains behind bars.

The incident happened outside Ocean Club, in Puerto Banus, on the Costa del Sol resort’s Golden Mile, where guests had been enjoying an annual champagne party.

After the crash, the men attempted to flee, allegedly, hitting several cars in the process. There were initial fears that the incident was terrorismrelated, but police soon ruled this out.

Footage has emerged of Stewart being marched along by an armed police officer, while another shows him lying on the road near the crash scene having been told to “shut up” after protesting: “I didn’t do anything.”

Both have UK records, and one is a Marbella resident.

All Hands on board

THE Helping Hands charity has “borrowed” Iceland’s stores in Las Chafiras and San Eugenio tomorrow (Saturday), to collect food for El Fraile’s homeless families.

Volunteers will be at both stores, with the permission

of Overseas Supermarkets, which owns the company, and will be hoping for a bumper response.

“We are asking for donations of non-perishable food to help these unfortunate people,” said Liz Montague, who runs Helping Hands.

The project is part of scheme to provide a 24-hour refuge for the disadvantaged in El Fraile.

There May be trouble ahead...

GBP volatility expected

THE pound’s run of losses against the major currencies persisted for the last couple of weeks of May. By the beginning of June, Sterling had fallen to a 2½-month low against the euro and multi-week lows against a number of the other majors.

Over the past two weeks, GBP/EUR has fallen from 1.1618 euros to a low of 1.1399.

EUR/GBP, on the other hand, advanced from £0.8662 to £0.8772 in the same period.

What’s been happening? A seemingly unending stream of UK election polls were the driving force behind GBP/ EUR movement for much of May. At the beginning of the month, it looked as though the Conservatives would

win the election by a landslide, with Theresa May commanding a 20-point lead over Labour’s Jeremy Corbyn.

However, May’s controversial manifesto and embarrassing U-turn on the so-called “Dementia tax” saw the Conservative lead slashed to four points in some polls, and just one point in another by 5th June.

As it had been forecast that an increased majority for the Conservatives would improve the government’s

hand during Brexit negotiations, the prospect of the election having a different result entirely, left the pound struggling.

Two, horrific, terror incidents (one in Manchester and another in London) also kept demand for the pound limited. The euro, meanwhile, remained comparatively firm following Emmanuel Macron’s election victory in France.

Polls suggesting that Macron is heading for a slam-dunk victory in

the June parliamentary elections were also europositive. However, EUR exchange-rate gains were a little tempered by rumours about the Greek debt situation, and speculation that the European Central Bank (ECB) has no plans to taper quantitative easing in the near future.

The pound is likely to experience notable volatility over the next couple of weeks, if there is a change in the status quo following the UK general election. If

May manages to score the greater majority she hopes for, the pound could climb in the immediate aftermath of the result being announced.

However, if the Conservatives lose seats, if Labour emerges victorious, or if the UK is left with a hung parliament, we could see the GBP/ EUR exchange rate tumble to fresh, multi-month lows.

Other news to watch out for includes the French legislative elections (which run from 11th-18th June), and any news relating to Greece’s appeal for debt-relief measures at the upcoming meeting of Eurozone finance ministers.

The Battles see three acts sing off for one place in the semi-final, although there are no steals on The Voice Kids – and no second chances for the coaches.

Elsewhere, PC Andrew Powell (Mark Stanley) is pressured by PC Dawn Morris (Aisling Loftus) and their fellow officers to back up their account of the night before - despite it going against everything he stands for. During confession, Father Michael urges Andrew to tell the truth, even though he risks ostracism and, worse, his job. Finding himself increasingly isolated Andrew must decide if truth is more important than loyalty - as he makes a decision that will affect his future, his family and his faith.

Amazing Animal Births

Monday 12th June, ITV1, 20.00

In this new six-part series, zoologist Lucy Cooke will be witnessing the miracle of life as she sees first-hand the incredible bond between a mother and her offspring that extraordinary moment when a little baby comes into a huge world.

From alligators, alpacas and gorillas, to guinea pigs, tapirs and lions, Lucy will be there as these animal babies embark on their amazing new adventures.

In episode one, Lucy is at a birth with more drama than she bargained for, and also witnesses the moment a rare baby rhino enters the world.

She starts her journey at the time of year when nature welcomes in millions of babies: spring, and her adventure begins high up in the hills of the Yorkshire Dales, where baby lambs are leaping into life.

Lucy says: “If there is one animal that is part of my family history, it’s the sheep, because my granddad and his father were both shepherds, and they must have delivered hundreds of lambs. So the perfect place for me to start my animal birth adventure is to find out if lambing is in my blood.”

Here, Lucy meets ups with shepherdess Amanda Owen, who runs the highest hill farm in the Yorkshire Dales, along with her husband Clive. They have over a thousand sheep that lamb on some of the toughest terrain in Britain.

Lots of Amanda’s flock are a hardy breed called Swaledales, and with thick coats, the female ewes make excellent mothers and are known for being able to rear lambs well, even in the harsh conditions of the Dales.

Amanda explains to Lucy how, with so many sheep, they can spot the pregnant ones: “When we put the tups out with the ewes, we put a colour on his brisket, so when he mates with them he leaves a colour on the ewe.”

Some of the last of Amanda’s pregnant mums are up on the highest part of the farm, and when Clive starts to think one of the mums is acting suspiciously, he moves her nearer to the farm.

Jo Cox: Death Of An MP

On 16 June 2016 the murder of Jo Cox - in the heat of EU referendum campaigning - shocked the nation. Jo Cox: Death Of An MP tells the story of this horrific attack and events surrounding it through the testimony of those closest to it, including Jo Cox’s family, eye witnesses and those who knew the murderer, Thomas Mair.

With unique access to West Yorkshire Police’s murder investigation we draw together for the first time all the CCTV, archive footage and other evidence that was gathered by the investigating officers.

The result is a forensic exploration of a ‘terrorist’ murder, in which we ask what led a man with no history of violence to brutally murder a female MP whom he had never met?

Jo Cox’s political convictions and the issues she fought so passionately for were at odds with Mair’s viewpoint, which some think motivated him to murder. Who Jo Cox was and what she stood for is explored in the film through archive footage and intimate interviews with family and friends.

Thomas Mair’s activities in the days leading up to the attack are retraced through interviews with detectives working the case. Along with the testimony of those who knew Mair, they portray a complex and contradictory character, a man who volunteers to help people of all races yet harbours a secret obsession with Nazism and the extreme right-wing.

Set against the backdrop of the EU referendum as the political temperature rises across the country, Jo Cox: Death Of An MP is a detailed account of that tragic day and sheds a unique light on the mystery of why Thomas Mair abandoned his quiet life to commit an act of terrorism.

The Passengers Who Took On The Trainline Wednesday 14th June, BBC2, 21.00

Jacques Peretti follows a group of commuters as they try to do the seemingly impossible - run a more efficient, customer-friendly train service - by persuading the Department for Transport that they can do a better job than one of Britain’s biggest train operators.

Britain has over 100,000 miles of train track, and many passengers endure ticket price hikes, overcrowding and consistent delays. One of the worsthit areas has been the southeast, covered by Southern and Southeastern, who scored the lowest of all rail franchises in a passenger satisfaction survey conducted by National Rail last year.

In 2016, against this backdrop and with the contract for Southeastern trains due to expire in just six months, a group of dissatisfied but determined passengers came together to try to take a railway franchise into their own hands. Jacques Peretti follows the group as they set about their revolutionary plan. Is their dream far-fetched, or will the Department for Transport, looking for fresh ideas, see this new passenger-run company as a viable option for the franchise?

It was the box office smash of the 90s, not least for its iconic strip, and 20 years later, The Full Monty is back… with a twist.

This is The Real Full Monty, where eight male celebrities will be baring all for a new ITV documentary, not only marking the film’s 20th anniversary, but to raise awareness of men’s cancers.

Along with host Alexander Armstrong, seven celebrity strippers will have only six days in total to learn and rehearse their unique take on the famous routine – performed to You Can Leave Your Hat On - under the watchful eye of choreographer and co-presenter Ashley Banjo, before ultimately performing it in front of an audience of thousands at The London Palladium.

Britain’s Greatest Invention Thursday 15th June, BBC2, 20.30

From antibiotics to the television, steam engines to the mobile phone, what is Britain’s Greatest Invention?

In a one-off special for BBC Two, the Science Museum will open the doors to the biggest invention time capsule in the world - their secret vaults - and ask the nation to vote for the British Invention which has most defined and shaped the modern world.

Hosted by Ant Anstead and Hannah Fry, seven celebrities will raid the archives and champion one object each, exploring the science and history behind the inventions that have defined modern Britain.

Discovering items big and small, epic and seemingly humble, Britain’s Greatest Invention will be a celebration of our inventing past, asking the public to vote on which item they feel has most shaped our lives today: antibiotics, concrete, the fridge, the jet engine, the mobile phone, the steam engine or the television, with the winner being announced live on BBC Two.

He joins the RSPB team who are tagging swifts to find out where they are feeding, and he heads to the arts centre where the biggest swift colony in the city can be found to see how sensitive building benefits the birds. He also meets the locals doing their bit to help Belfast become ‘swift city’.

Joe then heads to the farm where you’re as likely to find physalis, mustard flowers and Asian radish as you are spuds, carrots and caulis.

Meanwhile, Ellie takes a canoe trip down the beautiful River Bann. It is a great place for wading birds, is steeped in history and is said to be the river St Patrick took before arriving at the island where he built a monastery.

Ellie also visits Church Island and sees the sites associated with St Patrick, and she hears that it was also the poet Seamus Heaney’s favourite place in the world.

Jonny Brownlee is aiming to get his world title challenge back on track after a dramatic race in Japan last time out, where he ended up having to carry his bike after a crash in the cycling phase.

Jonny is joined by brother and Olympic champion Alistair, who makes his first World Series appearance of the season. The pair will certainly not lack for support as Leeds is their hometown but their rivals include fivetime world champion Javier Gomez, along with current world champion and series leader Mario Mola.

Leading the charge for the British women’s team is former world champion Non Stanford but she faces stiff opposition in a high-quality field, not least in the form of reigning world champion Flora Duffy, who showed she had shaken off early-season injury problems with victory in the most recent race in Yokohama.

Coping with posttraumatic stress

“I CAN’T do anything with my hair” is what I often hear in the salon from new clients, who are fighting curls or struggling with overlylong hair. But there’s always a solution.

I’ve yet to see a customer who has hair that’s impossible to deal with; the trick is finding the right cut that suits his or her particular hair-type.

There’s no point trying to force hair into a shape in which it’s just not going to go, or sending someone out with a gorgeous new style, knowing that they won’t remember how to create this at

home. You have to work with what you do have, and not get upset about what you don’t.

If you can explain to your stylist what you want, and the time limits you have to create your style at home, then they should be able to work around your ideas and what is practical.

Don’t run into your salon clutching a photo, or an image you love, without first thinking of what you are giving the stylist to work with. Sometimes, clients hate to hear the “no” word; being told that they can’t have

what they want, or that their idea of what they wanted isn’t going to suit, or isn’t physically possible.

Hair is a substance that we, as stylists, work with - year in, year out. We know what it can and can’t do, so, when your stylist is steering you towards another idea, it’s for a reason.

It’s not that we only want to do what we like, it’s that we don’t like you leaving with what you wanted, and then hating it with a passion.

Stylists work very hard to keep clients happy, and have spent years training to do so. This is why it is so important to find one you can gel with. Your hair leaves the salon with our name on it, so make sure that, as you’re wearing it, you do us, as stylists, proud.

In a Barbie world

People are allowed to wear what they like, when they like.

Fashion designers get it wrong sometimes, and so do the stores; that’s why we have sales.

But there are times when, on the streets, people get fashion so wrong it should be a crime, when their idea of what’s cool is, to many, borderline offensive.

Praise to the heavens that ladies are finally stopping the “ bare -your-buttstyle” shorts that do nothing for anyone.

This phase of exposing as much as you can is provoked by what we see on TV and in magazines, but rarely does it suit a girl walking down the street.

There’s too much falseness around in ladies’ fashion at the moment. I remember when eyebrows were made of hair, and not drawn on with a freezer marker; when makeup was used to enhance, and not to create a “drag-queen” effect that totally covered any natural features.

Everything has gone to an extreme, which can only mean that

“the natural look” must be on its way back in. Many now dress for the body they would like, not what they actually have. To me, a woman looks so much better when she’s more covered up, rather than with everything “on show”.

I’m not a prude by any means, but ask any man what he likes to see, and I’m sure he’s not in love with some Barbie-esque style, overly-made-up girl or woman who’s got far too much on show.

Think about it girls; dress to suit yourself, not how the media wants you to be.

Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a build-up of stress/ anxiety over time, involving more than one experience, or is a repressed traumatic experience. This means that the feelings and emotions have been “stuck” or “fixated” on that experience/s, often without conscious awareness of that experience/s.

Over time, the actual experience/s become lost in day-to-day living and may you feel “OK”, but then, suddenly, for no apparent reason, you experience acute anxiety and panic attacks.

You avoid certain situations without even realising, and, when an episode of anxiety is triggered, it can lead to nausea, vomiting, shaking, dizziness, fear of crowds, fainting, acute stomach pain, migraine and hallucinations.

Other symptoms may include uncontrollable crying, repeated behaviours such as repeatedly checking the same things, being fanatical about the way certain things “should be”, not being able to focus on any one thing for a long period (or focusing only on one thing obsessively), and many more besides.

Symptoms are experienced at individual and varying levels. Anxiety/ panic is very stressful and confusing to experience, and can shat-

ter confidence and completely change lives, not only for the person experiencing the panic, but also for the people surrounding that person.

Many people reach out to doctors for medication, which can certainly alleviate and reduce symptoms, and help you to remain able to function on a dayto-day basis. However, it does not cure the problem.

The good news is that it can be dealt with, particularly with the right therapist and support. There are many good therapists of many different fields who can assist with anxiety/panic, and it is something you should research to find out what you believe would suit you best.

I am a hypnotherapist/ psychotherapist, and I use gentle relaxation leading into focusing techniques/hypnosis, to help you relax enough to access the traumatic experience or build-up of stresses, in a safe environment.

This allows your mind to process clearly how these experience/s have affected you mentally, physically and emotionally. I will then guide you using psychotherapeutic techniques to resolve the trauma/stress, and release the feelings that have been holding you in that panic/anxiety state.

We will then work on how to move forward without these thoughts, feelings and emotions. This type of therapy works on a very deep level and with the root cause/ memory/experience. It

allows the release of physical symptoms, as well as emotional and psychological, which is the advantage that hypnotherapy has over some other therapeutic techniques.

However, a lot of people come to me believing that either it cannot be changed, or that it will be changed immediately. Neither is normally a correct assumption. These stifling feelings and physical symptoms, whether they have been experienced once or many times, have been built up over time. They don’t generally appear overnight, therefore, they do not disappear overnight.

However, with the right supportive environment, and using the correct skills, it is certainly something that you can be free from.

So you can go out and continue to live the life that you want to live, in the way that you want to live it.

Stealth drug is still a mystery to hospitals BURUNDANGA is the popular name for scopolamine, a drug used in medicine to treat nausea and motion sickness, among other conditions.

But its sideeffects include drowsiness, a loss of inhibition and memory lapses.

And, despite arguments to the contrary, this really is a drug that can be slipped into a woman’s drink sometimes, to pave the way for her to be sexually abused.

There have also been instances of elderly people taking it, unwittingly, during the day, and robbed of their savings.

Spain’s emergency rooms are, increasingly, becoming familiar with this type of case, and the drug associated with it is burundanga.

A rapist arrested in Madrid in 2012, who had been passing himself off as a doctor, gave his victims scopolamine, which is cheap, and easy to purchase online.

It can be slipped into someone’s food or drink while the victim is not looking … and it can even be blown into their faces, with the same effect.

Those targeted will not remember a thing

afterwards, and it is known as “chemical submission”.

It is a well-known practice in Colombia and other Latin American countries, where they use burundanga in robberies and kidnappings.

But, in Spain, its existence is hardly acknowledged by authorities, mostly because the drug is eliminated by the victim’s body rapidly, leaving little or no trace behind.

Thus, doctors are treating scopolamine intoxications far more frequently than official data would suggest, considering that few cases ever make it to court.

One highly-placed official with the judicial

police said: “There has been the odd case in the past, but in Spain, its incidence rate is practically zero.”

Yet the day-to-day experience at hospital emergency rooms tells a different story. “We get two to three cases a month, and that’s in this hospital alone,” said Andrés Santiago, head of legal medicine at Hospital Clínico San Carlos.

“Just imagine if all 35 hospitals in the Madrid region, and all the ones in the rest of Spain, were sensitive to the situation and acted correctly to identify cases.”

The problem is that if medics are unaware of the issue, they will not identify cases correctly. Yet experts estimate that 20-30% of sexual assaults may be caused by chemical submission.

Barcelona’s Hospital Clínic confirms the figure, Dr Manel Santiñà saying: “The problem lies in certifying it. You reach the conclusion based more on the victims’ stories than on what you can prove scientifically, which, unfortunately, is little.”

Andrés Santiago added: “But time is proving us right; with suspicion indicators and well-trained personnel in emergency

rooms, it is possible for cases to emerge.

“The key lies in creating awareness among health personnel, judges and prosecutors.

The goal is for people to go to the hospital, or to report cases if they feel suspicious symptoms.

“In two to three years, this is going to be a generalised thing, and the problem will be be known and accepted.”

But the current lack of official data makes it difficult to raise awareness. Typically, cases emerge in specialised publications, and a study of 306 sexual assaults in Madrid, between 2010 and 2012, found that one-third might have been cases of chemical submission.

But only the most extreme of these cases make headlines. Two youths, who died at a Getafe party in 2011, had definitely taken burundanga, while the victims are sometimes under-age.

A paedophile from Ciudad Lineal, arrested in 2014, had lured his young victims with sweets laced with lorazepam, a drug which has sedative effects.

This week has seen the opening of a trial against two Granada men, charged with sexually-assaulting a

woman in 2013 after slipping scopolamine in her drink.

The 40-year-old victim, a married mother of three, went out for a business dinner and returned home the next day in an obvious state of confusion, “as though she were returning from an orgy”, said her husband.

She said she’d bought two drinks at a nightclub, and that the suspects bought her the last one. All three later had sexual relations.

The men say she consented to it, and the blood, urine and hair samples did not turn up any substances. But the prosecutor believes the woman’s story is credible, and compatible with a case of chemical submission.

There have been recorded cases of chemical submission since 2003, when Hospital Clínico San Carlos and Santiago de Compostela University conducted parallel studies on scopolamine, following a string of robberies.

The Clínico, a national reference for the treatment of sexual assault, introduced a special protocol in 2008 to help medical workers identify cases of scopolamine intoxication.

In February 2015, Ma-

drid hospitals adopted a similar working document, while San Carlos Hospital has just published a Guide for the Detection of Chemical Submission for its emergency-room personnel.

The guide underscores medical experts’ concern at how this reality is being underestimated, and opens with the following statement: “Spain, together with neighbouring countries, is experiencing a rise in the number of intoxications aimed at sexually assaulting or robbing [the victim].

“Governments, administrations, institutions, scientific societies and professionals are becoming aware of the need to assess the situation, and they propose early-detection action.”

The document adds that “it is a relatively frequent situation, but one which is difficult to diagnose”.

Suspected cases rarely end up in police complaints, backed by evidence, because scopolamine disappears from the bloodstream in 2-6 hours. It remains present in urine for around 12 hours, although it is possible to be detected up to a week later.

It means that victims often face scepticism by the people around them. And in rape cases, there is the added problem of no genital abrasion because the drug inhibits resistance.

As for elderly people, their symptoms of disorientation and memory-loss are often attributed to senility or a stroke.

Chemical submission is also underplayed in Spanish legislation.

Contrary to United Nations’ recommendations, and, in contrast with some European countries, Spain’s penal code does not consider the use of scopolamine an aggravating circumstance, and it is included in the category of sexual abuse without violence or intimidation.

Volunteering in Tanzania

By Louise Byrne AT the beginning of this year, like many people, I sat down to plan my annual holiday. Could I afford a cruise, or maybe even the special offer of a five-star, all-inclusive in Marrakech?

It then occurred to me that the 1,000 euros available to spend should be used to make a difference, and I have always wanted to volunteer and help people less fortunate. I passionately believe that we need to help each another through kindness and love, in order for the world to become a better place.

So, when I learned about the non-profit organisation EPIC (Everyday People Initiating Change), I knew, immediately, that this was a project of which I wanted to be a part.

It was set up, 10 years ago,

by Tennille Amor and Alexi Panos, to organise the drilling of clean-water wells in Tanzania, Africa. Once the water wells are bored, the next step is to continue the development of the communities, by providing hygiene and sanitation education.

A few years ago, the girls set up a fellowship programme in which people like me could become involved.

As Westerners, we take for granted something as simple as being able to pour

a glass of water from the tap, or take a shower at our leisure.

These are things that the people of Tanzania cannot even dream of. We are incredibly fortunate to have access to organic foods and clean water; in some Tanzanian villages, the locals have to walk seven miles to collect a single bucket of DIRTY water.

The average family is lucky if they can obtain four gallons a day, while Europeans average 50 gallons per person!

I will be staying with a local family, eating local food, and

will be fully submerged into village life, such as taking cold, bucket showers. The other volunteers and I will be taught the importance of the work being done, and we’ll walk miles to collect water from a local source.

We’ll carry buckets of water on our heads, to understand what women and children have to do, every single day.

We will visit the villages where EPIC has already provided clean-water wells, and help with the hygiene and sanitation education programmes.

My first trip to Tanzania will start on the 17th September,

so, before then, I want to raise 3,000 euros. I have donated 500 euros, and, of course, will pay for my own flights and expenses. My colleague and very good friend, Craig Phillips, and Steve Coster, who runs Bootcamp Tenerife, are organising a “Hell Day”, to help raise money to support the project.

On 16th June, starting at 4am on Puerto Colon beach, the Bootcampers will take part in a sponsored five hours of pure Hell; running, burpees, bunny-jumps, resistance-ropes, sand-bags, sea-training, press-ups,

weights and much, much more.

So, if you know anyone at Bootcamp Tenerife, and would like to sponsor them per hour of completed Hell, you would be helping these beautiful families gain access to clean, running water.

OUR climate here allows us to spend so much time outside, there is no reason not to apply the same amount of design detail to your outside area, as you do to the inside.

In the UK, you would get a limited amount of use out of anything you buy for the garden, but here we are fortunate enough to be able to utilise our outside space as just another room, and use it pretty much all year round.

Before planning your garden or terrace area, consider what you are going to use the space for. Is it for relaxing, entertaining or for the kids to play?

Measure your space so that you know what will fit, and that there is enough space to move around.

If you need to move the furniture inside on a regular basis (when you go back to the UK if it is a holiday home, for example), that will influence the shape and weight of any furniture you buy.

You might be better going for aluminiumframed furniture which is lighter, chairs that will stack or fold, and an umbrella base that is filled with water to provide the necessary weight, and can be emptied when not in use.

Consider durability as well. Wooden furniture will look traditional and natural, but will need re-varnishing or sealing at least every year because of our harsh

sun. Metal furniture may rust because of that bracing sea air.

A great solution is rattan, or rattan-effect resin on an aluminium frame. It’s easy to clean, and is resistant to most weathers. However, like most things, you get what you pay for. Our unrelenting sun will eat through a cheap set of furniture; it’s false economy if you end up buying twice, so purchase the best quality you can afford.

If you are short of space, consider going for a chair that can also be reclined for that after-lunch nap.

A parasol will provide shade. The size and weight of it will depend whether it will remain fixed, or needs to be moved around to cope with direct sun. You can use it to introduce a colour theme into your outside area.

If you have a pergola or overhang on your terrace, consider fitting some curtains in waterresistant, washable material. Cream is a classic look that won’t make the area look too small, and can provide shade and privacy when needed. When not in use, they can be tied back to dress the area with a fabulous tie-back. This is a look that is not reserved for the biggest villas, and can be incorporated into the smallest terrace.

Cushions for chairs should also be upholstered in water-andfade-resistant material, and, preferably, be removable and washable. Choose a bright, tropical colour to complement your scheme, and tone with your umbrella.

If you often entertain but don’t have enough

seats, consider some big cushions as additional seating that can be stacked up, or used as foot-stools when not needed.

Use accessories just as you would indoors.

Plants in coloured pots will break up straight lines and enclosed spaces, and fairy lights and candles will create an ambience that you will be able to enjoy, long after the sun has gone down.

If you are unsure as to how to get the best out of your outside area, consider using an interior, or, rather, an exterior designer!

Many will include their design advice and ideas in the cost of the furniture.

THE main role of a propertymanagement company is to manage properties for private landlords.

Responsibilities range from sourcing tenants and collecting rent, to full responsibility and management.

Some landlords and property owners also require a key-holding service, or arrange for their property to be checked on a weekly basis if the property is empty. Checking your property on weekly basis means any maintenance issues can be resolved along the way.

The agent will normally charge landlords fees for providing this service, ranging from 7-12%

Most tenants are focused solely on choosing the right property; it is equally important to choose the right agent, and a small amount of preparation and research can go far in preventing a negative experience.

Often, the internet and local papers can be an excellent place to start.

Some Spanish agents will typically charge one month’s rent as a finder’s fee, and some people acting alone have sometimes asked for two months' fees up front. Normally, tenants may pay a contract fee of £200.

Benefits for tenants There are several advantages of using an agent when looking for a property. A good

agent will have expert, local knowledge of the areas they serve.

This is invaluable in saving you time and effort in finding the right home within the pressures of a strict time-frame, and getting used to a new island.

Agents also provide a buffer between you

and your landlord, should issues or problems arise during the duration of the tenancy.

Especially with language possibly being a barrier, this is equally as important for a tenant.

They should also be responsible for showing you the property and guiding

you through the appliances, providing you with copies of any utility bills and providing you with a rental contract.

A good agent will also keep in contact with you throughout your tenancy, and deal with any problems or maintenance issues as they arise.

Ingame Yami Golf

Pearly Grey golf day hits the heights again PEARLY Grey hosted its eighth annual Ingane Yami Golf Tournament on Saturday, at the fabulous Golf Costa Adeje course.

It was held there, in perfect sunshine, for the fifth time and was organised by the Pearly Grey Ocean Club staff. And, as ever, it produced an excellent day’s golf, and some great fundraising.

The company again teamed up with its media partners, Oasis Fm and Canarian Weekly, to help promote the event and ensure we had a superb turn-out of 98 players.

We have the support of the local golfing community each year, and Mike Setch, who provide us with players from their golf societies.

Pearly Grey and Ingane Yami would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to all the players, who again helped make this event one of the best on Tenerife’s golfing calendar.

But, as ever, it would not be possible without our sponsors, many of whom have been with us since our first tournament, back in 2010. And each year, they return to support us.

We also welcomed 10 new

sponsors this year, and we hope you will join us again next year. Thanks to all your support, we have raised around 21,000 euros, which, with a favourable exchange-rate, means R303,000 South African Rand.

Rojas is simply super!

TENERIFE pro boxer Adasat Rojas has won the Mediterranean SuperMiddleweight title in Toledo on a technical knock-out.

Adasat, from the Santa Cruz town of Santa Clara, used all his power to beat Romanian opponent Catalin Paraschiveanu, who couldn’t carry on in the eighth round after being battered.

Tomorrow (Saturday), there’s more fight action at the Los Cristianos sports hall, by the municipal, outdoor swimming pool.

This time it’s K1 Muay Thai kick-boxing, with 12 bouts on the bill, and featuring British fighters Danny Hamner and Mike Egan. There is also a ladies’ fight. It all starts at 7pm, and tickets, from 12 euros in advance, can be obtained from several local gyms, or they’re 15 euros on the night.

Athletics

Arona Combined Events feature golden standard MANY countries, many ages, and many performances to admire. Two days of scorching competition, at the Antonio Dominguez stadium, Las Americas, saw personal and national records broken.

It was extremely inspiring for the young, rising stars of Arona Athletics Club, who competed for their own rewards in-between the main events.

In the heptathlon, the senior female winner was Marisa Vaz, from Portugal, whose points total broke the national record.

Elizabeth Morland, from County Wexford, Ireland, pushed her all the way in second, and Sussex GB international Jo Rowland, from Crawley, took third spot.

In the Junior version, Maria Vicente Garcia set a Spanish junior record on her way to victory, followed

by Emma Garcia Palencia and Eloina Peña, also competing for Spain.

There were two junior categories for the men’s decathlon, won by Spain’s Jorge Davila Lopez and Austrian Leon Okafor.

Taavi Tsernjavski, of Estonia, claimed the senior decathlon title, followed Ruben Gado of France, and third-placed Spaniard Pablo Trescoli Garcia.

Looking behind the stats

and hard work, the smiles and frustration were never far apart, and the challenges were not just physical.

The high jump really is a technical discipline, the athletes measuring out their run-ups and marking their final launch steps with small strips of tape. Then came a mental rewind of the approach before they actually attacked the bar.

The green vest of Ireland suited 19-year-old Elizabeth Morland. She was as cool as a cucumber, matching her more-experienced rivals as the bar edged its way higher with each round.

Despite seeing the others off to finish first, she had a couple of goes above the top mark, to no avail.

“The winning 1.76 metres matched my previous personal best, set indoors, so I wanted to push it a bit more outside,” said Elizabeth. “If I had cleared

1.79m, it would have been my best yet.”

Bristol’s David Hall was going well, with good returns in the long-jump and discus, but the polevault was his nemesis.

In the warm-ups, he couldn’t get his run-up right and kept running through without making a vault. Once the serious competition started, he soared over the bar in the first round before the return of his problem, which saw him eliminated.

The Arona event lures back many athletes, year after year, and is now well-established on the international calendar.

The competition was as fierce as ever, but the mutual respect and sportsmanship of the athletes set a great example to the local hopefuls.

And hard-working voluntary staff at the stadium made the entire event tick over smoothly.

Derby of all derbies IT was billed as the Derby of all Derbies as Phoenix travelled round the corner to Pas O Nadas A for this clash of titans. And it lived up to all expectations.

The draw paired Richard and Mitch, and, despite a 180 from the latter, Richard came out on top in a thriller. Andy the Hatter was in terrific form for the hosts with two maximums boosting their 6-2 success.

Emerald Lounge agreed to switch their game against the Pub … and were rewarded with an 8-0 defeat, although some games went to the narrowest of margins.

San Blas, with last year’s single finalists coming unstuck. Picasso’s Simon upped his game to beat Wayne, and Martin, from Bar 180 A, put one past Per to inspire a 6-2 win for the home team.

The Tavern faced a toughlooking trip to Playboys and took their first point of the season after winning the trebles. Kill Bill, not to be outdone, took out a 180.

Scruffy Macs, last year’s

champions, welcomed Spear Chuckers and, again, the unexpected occurred when Tom lost for the first time in over a season as Rob took the honours.

This rubbed off on his Spear Chuckers, who came away with a respectable point by also clinching the crucial trebles.

Legends were buzzing in Division 2, flying off with a 5-3 win over the Bs to maintain their status as league leaders.

Sandys travelled to Parque de la Reina and won 6-2 against Bar Leones to maintain their 100% winning start.

And in Silencio, Bar 180B took the last game, Les hitting double 7 just after midnight for a draw. But despite dropping the point, Marilyns A are still in the hunt for this year’s honours.

Three different Nauta teams, three different results. Naughty Nauta made it three wins out of three by posting a 5-3 scoreline at Our Place Breakaways.

The Nomads returned home from Clouseaus, in Palm Mar, with a well-deserved 4-4 draw.

However, most games had their twists and turns and could have gone either way.

Finally, the Nutty crew, on home soil, picked up just two points against in-form Pas O Nadas B. In both divisions, it has been reported, it is not only great darts that have featured. In addition, the banter between teams, the atmosphere, the hospitality, plus the food, are continuing to make Fridays the night to look forward to.

Our summer Dream team

DREAMERS emerged as first winners of the Arona Foods Summer Pool League after a thrilling conclusion to this first event.

The finale was so close that the top three places were decided on singles frames won. Dreamers won 47 frames, Hammers 44, while Palms 2 were third with 32.

The highest individual break was won by Gaffers’ Neil with 27, a superb effort, and Dreamers are this years champions, which a great effort by the team. They held first place throughout the entire campaign and were deserved champions.

Trophies and prize-money were given out on Tuesday and everyone enjoyed a fine night. We would like to thank all the players,

Hammers v Dreamers On this final night,

Hammers took all the points in the singles, coming back from 1-3 down to win 5-3. They were also 48-42 ahead in the team game, before Tommy stepped up and knocked in 13 to give Dreamers five points … and the title. Well done to them!

Bluebell v Palms 2 Palms 2 won the singles 5-3 and the team game 5529, taking all 10 points to achieve third place. It was an outstanding effort by

the 2nd Division side, so well played, guys!

Terrace v Treehouse Treehouse shared the singles 4-4 and won the team game 55-21 to collect 10 points, leaving them fourth overall with 60 points. They finished five points behind the top three, and last week’s loss against Hammers spoiled any chance they had of winning the league.

But they had been jointtop for seven weeks and were unlucky not to finish higher.

Gaffers v Phoenix The singles were shared 4-4, and Phoenix took the team game 55-38 to gain 10 points, leaving them eighth overall, while Gaffers’ scored five points and finished bottom of the table, in 10th place.

A home whimper, but we’re bang on course

TENERIFE fluffed their lines on the big stage, only to discover that their rivals had also experienced stagefright. And this was their guarantee of a precious spot in the promotion play-offs.

But they are there on merit because their resurgence, from a November relegation place to the brink of Spain’s top-tier football, has been fuelled with good, confident play, along with majestic away form.

But this really was a poor game.

Gimnastic were scrapping for points to avoid relegation, and their sound, defensive plan, coupled with some dreadful diving and rolling, made it such a frustrating match for the bumper, 19,347 crowd.

At least the yellow card enjoyed a nice evening out … because it was seldom in the referee’s pocket as he booked 10 players.

Pressure can play a big part at this stage of the season, and most of the home side had an off-day. But Vitolo stood out as a midfield beacon with his passion and determination, while Tayron looked the best option up front.

deeper behind the forwards, wasn’t threading passes through in his usual, defence-splitting way.

Aaron was also a bit blunt, yet he forced a good tipover by the opponents’ keeper from his freekick, which proved to be Tenerife’s best first-half offering.

tight and defend, were always looking for a snappy break, but Delgado wasted their best chance of the half with a wild blast, clear of goal.

Inaki had been drafted in at left-back for suspended Camille, but he was limping within 15 minutes and went off after half-an-hour.

That meant a quick juggle

But Uche needed watching, and Ruiz gave him too much space, Dani Hernandez tidying up after him.

The second half was marginally better because Gaku was getting more involved. A clumsy tackle on him was worth a penalty shout, but the ref wasn’t impressed, though.

And Gimnastic’s partypooper goal came too easily. Barreiro headed a ball on to Delgado, whose shot was parried by Dani. But the ball travelled only as far as Uche, who scored what was to be the winner.

It was the cue for Amath to appear, in place of Aaron, as Tenerife tried to restore some order. But Gimnastic were in no mood to give up their get-out-of-jail card.

Mossa and Madinda led charmed lives as they continued to topple over at the slightest touch. Gaku forced a good reflex save, and sub Amath also cursed the keeper for his alertness.

Suso, replacing Tayron for the last change, set up Gaku, and another foul in the box might have brought a spot-kick.

But it just wasn’t happening on the night, and even seven minutes of injury time didn’t help!

The other key games had kicked off at the same time, so a few frantic calculations were scribbled behind the scenes.

And, as the final whistle sounded on a somewhat dejected Tenerife side, the good news seeped through: they had made the playoffs, to overcome that immediate disappointment.

Tomorrow (Saturday), it’s Real Zaragoza v CD Tenerife, along with the rest of the final league games, to decide the match-ups for the play-off semi-finals.

Wednesday sees the sixthplaced team at home to the third side, with the second leg next Saturday.

Thursday is fifth v fourth, with the return on Sunday (18th June). All games kick-off at 8pm.

Queen’s Cup high-fliers Seve the legend is remembered Levante 1 Egatesa Granadilla 2 THE Tenerife team pushed their season’s achievements to even greater heights in Madrid as they marched into the Copa del Reina (Queen’s Cup) semi-finals.

Their victory over Levante teed-up a semi-final meeting against Atletico Madrid next Friday (16th June), also in Madrid.

Cindy put them on track in this quarter-final clash with a goal after 18 minutes. And goals were always going to figure because both sides have been free-scoring all season, and Levante had former Tenerife striker Maria Jose Perez in their side.

True to form, the cousin of Newcastle´s Ayoze scored against her former teammates on the half-hour to set up a tight second half.

Eva Llamas had a good chance just after the break, only to be denied by the Levante

keeper’s prompt action.

But Tenerife added some new blood by bringing on Mery, and the move paid off when she scored the winner after 82 minutes.

There was no way the Granadilla girls were going to surrender that advantage, and they celebrated wildly at the final whistle.

The other semi-final will feature Barcelona v Valencia, with the grand final rounding off the Madrid jamboree on Sunday, 18th June.

Tenerife have already started to strengthen the squad for next season, signing Andrea Marrero from La Laguna’s relegated Tacuense.

NOT quite the Ryder Cup, but Canaries v Great Britain will be full of pride, not just for the competition, but also in memory of Spanish legend Seve Ballesteros.

The match-up on Sunday (11th June), at the Buenavista del Norte course, in Isla Baja, is part of a series of commemorative events for the much-loved golfer, who lost his fight against cancer in 2011, at the age of 54.

The Buenavista del Norte course, which was designed

by Seve, opened in 2003, and this will be the second time it has staged the event.

Great Britain are sending an eight-man squad of professionals for the challenge, featuring Jordan Gibb, Andrew Marshall, Lee Mackie, Adam Sagar, Lee Cortefield III, Colton Davis, Steve Surrey and Michael McCarthy.
